IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS Destination Imagination 2017
This week DI Teams from both ISP and KSI will travel to the Regional Celebration of Creativity Tournament in Colombia. The tournament will take place at the Colegio Jorge Washington in Cartagena, Colombia from Friday, March 10th to Sunday, March 12th, 2017. Travel days will be Thursday, March 9th and Monday, March 13th. We look forward to the journey that our teams will soon embark upon in Colombia. Attending a tournament is one of the culminating experiences for a DI team. It is where the team can publicly present its team challenge solution to a group of appraisers. The teams have been working diligently to prepare their presentations through building their own props, designing backgrounds, costumes, writing and practicing their scripts . There are six new Central Challenges to choose from each year which incorporate STEM, the arts and service learning. During the tournament, teams will solve two types of challenges: Central Challenge and Instant Challenge. These challenges prompt teams to think on their feet to produce a solution in a period of just five to eight minutes. Follow this link for a preview of this year’s challenges. Let’s give all our ISP participants a big dolphin wave as they head off to display their creativity, team work and problem solving skills.

PARENT COFFEE BULLYING PREVENTION It is our pleasure to inform you that we will be hosting a Bullying Prevention Parent coffee on Wednesday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. in the ES conference room. The topic of discussion will be focused on identifying the warning signs of bullying, how we can prevent it and identify it appropriately. Read more here.
Save the Date – ES MAP Testing The testing window for MAP testing in elementary will be March 27-April 7. We recognize that this backs up to our spring break but it is extremely important that our students are present each day to ensure that they are able to complete all sessions of the assessment. Our second round of parent teacher conferences will be on Wednesday and Thursday, March 29 and 30. There is no school for students on these days. However, the conferences will be student -led so we ask families to bring your child with you to the conferences. More information will go out when the date is closer.
ES Musical: Madagascar, April 4-6 Please join us in watching and supporting our students and staff who are working hard on the ES Musical: Madagascar! The musical will run April 4-6 and show times will be announced soon. We hope to see you and your children there!
Lost and Found is Overflowing! Please encourage your children to check our lost and found for any items they may have misplaced. We have many sweaters, water bottles, lunch boxes, and much more. Everything that has not been claimed will be donated to one of our sister schools on March 31.

Middle School & High School ACROSS DIVISIONS - Project Based Learning
PROJECT BASED LEARNING AT ISP: Tiptoeing Into Creative Writing in FRENCH! Last week students from middle and high school took on the challenge of creating and sharing short stories in French. Students took on Project Based Learning challenges in French class as part of their "Tip toeing into creative writing" project aimed at making learners aware of the importance of adjectives in descriptive and narrative writing. Students used adjectives to describe the characters’ personality, physical traits, and the environment. In addition, students were able to identify key components of a story. For example, they realized that a good story is well-sequenced, it has a beginning, a middle and an end, conflict, and a central idea. This project based learning approach helps students go beyond formal knowledge or content in order to establish connections with important issues like global warming, values, protection of our oceans, and being principled.

THIMUN: Insights from A First-Timer I was skeptical. Although I wanted to believe that I would have tried my best without the possibility of winning an award, I struggled to picture a group of young men and women discussing global issues without a competitive incentive. “The conference is the prize,” they said, and I continued to doubt the extent to which 4,000 students could possibly agree with that statement. Now, in the wake of what is humorously known as PTD (post-THIMUN depression), the chair stands corrected. Read more here.
ISP Students Support Red Cross Mission in Las Tablas Before the Carnaval break, I was part of a group of six students that traveled to Las Tablas to help support some of the humanitarian work being undertaken by the Panamanian and American Red Cross. Read more here.

AASCA Tennis – Costa Rica The Lincoln School Costa Rica hosted the first ever AASCA Tennis tournament. 5 schools from around the region came together at the Costa Rica country club to compete in a Davis Cup style event. 11 tennis players from ISP traveled with Coach Fernando and Coach Andres to battle it out in both singles and doubles matches. The team was composed of 7 high school students and 4 middle school boys. The standard of play was very high. Our players rose to the occasion playing some very fine tennis in very challenging matches. For many of our players it was the first time they had played in this style of tournament and the learning process was positively enjoyed by all of them. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on representing ISP so well at this inaugural AASCA event.
AASCA Swimming next week here at ISP. All day Friday 17th and Saturday 18th March ISP hosted the first ever AASCA swimming meet and now in its third year ISP hosts again. This time there will be 9 AASCA schools competing in the largest AASCA swim meet ever. 150 swimmers will compete over 2 days of intense competition at the ISP pool.
