IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS Destination Imagination 2017

Let's congratulate the Destination Imagination teams and their team managers for their outstanding display of teamwork, creativity, innovation and problem solving skills throughout the 2017 DI COLOMBIA's Celebration of Creativity Tournament in Cartagena, Colombia on March 10th -12th. Attending a tournament is a time in which teams are able to celebrate their DI journey. It's a time to connect, build community, participate in hands on STEM activities, solve Instant Challenges, PIN trade, create sculptures, and display sportsmanship.

This year, 30 teams from Panama, Ecuador, and Colombia traveled to showcase their teams skills at the regional tournament. Out of those thirty, 7 teams were from Panama, ISP and KSI (KnightsBridge International). Many DI teams began their journey during the first week of September. However, for the past 3-4 months they have dedicated time to developing a team solution to one open ended project, the Central Challenge. This year's CCs chosen by our teams were Scientific (Happy Chickens and #secretimagination), Technical (DInosaurs), Fine Arts (DIDols, DCI and DInnovators) and Service Learning (Project Outreach) taken on by the HS team(DIviners). Our elementary teams had an extremely amazing experience and performance. Team DIdols out of 5 teams placed 2nd in the Fine Arts Challenge Vanished and 1st place in the sculpture contest. Meanwhile, Team Happy chickens were granted a special award as they impressed the appraisers during their Instant Challenge. They received the Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution and performance. As well they placed 2nd in the Scientific Challenge out of nine elementary teams. Both MS and HS teams brought home 1st and 2nd place awards. PIN TRADING is a highlight at any DI tournament and has become very popular. Each year, DI teams and affiliates develop a new pin design to represent a theme, region, challenge and/or team. This year's Panamanian pin sets were designed by the following DIers: Jake Mejia, Raquel Cardenas, Vinya Ivaturi, Naily Hackin and Laua Tello in collaboration with art teacher Mirtie Baugh. Everyone was excited about getting their hands on one of the DI Panama pins. Here is a video recap of the 3 day tournament. The Dolphin community will have a chance to see the teams perform soon at the next ISP Artsfest. In the meantime, we invite you follow the DI journey on Instagram @di_panama. LITERACY TO LIFE We would like to thank everyone who helped to make sure that our Literacy to Life Week went as smoothly as it did. Every single one of our students was able to meet our guest author, Kristy Dempsey, and also had the opportunity to listen to her speak about her journey to become the author that she is today. In addition to that, we were able to culminate the week with our annual Book Character Parade. We had all sorts of cute creatures walking about our halls last Friday! Lastly, we hosted our first annual Literacy Afternoon where parents were able to get a glimpse into what’s been happening in their child’s literacy classrooms. In most cases the parents were able to walk away with a strategy, game, or idea that they could do at home with their student(s) to reinforce the classroom learning. It was a SUPER busy week and we are more than grateful for all of the parent help and support that was shown from beginning to end – thank you!

GIN CONFRENCE GIVES HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

Did you miss the Global Issues Network Conference last week? No worries check out the conference summary prepared by the student organizers.

https://storify.com/GINStory/panagin Take a look at the closing ceremony video prepared by Austin Lopez https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TUcU6HimxY

Reflections from school leaders: “I would like to congratulate each of you for your service. But I would also encourage each of you to extend your service into the realm of change. We at ISP hope you enjoyed these three days. Our hope for the future is that you move your projects forward into bold solutions that, as EmerGINg leaders, you will champion with courage, conviction and confidence.” - Rajiv Bhat School Director

“I have been to 25…30….50 …. who knows how many student conferences. I have organized at least 10 similar events. This was the BEST CONFERENCE I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. Every move (even those that occurred during crisis times) was thoughtful, in keeping with the mission, student centered, and effective. Every student who was a part of the team had ownership of the final product. Every presenter and keynoter that I witnessed was worthwhile and real. Every background & planning decision from reusable water bottles to the choice of student MCs was authentic and consistent. The Christmas lights for dinner were a nice touch as well. ;) In a word, this conference was: “ on fleek” -James Mattiace HS Assistant Principle
