From the Director

It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to new and returning families to the 2014-2015 school year at the International School of Prague. We are well aware that there is an enormous amount of information for students and families to absorb at the beginning of the year, especially when you are new to a school. Publications such as the Parent Handbook contain key information about how our school functions and will help you and your children get the most out of ISP. Other important means of communication are the daily Parent Contact (which you will receive via email), our web site (www.isp.cz), and our community portal, Schoolnet (http://schoolnet.isp.cz) which can be accessed with the username, isp, and the password, falcons. In addition, there will be many opportunities to attend social gatherings or informative workshops throughout the year and we encourage parents to participate in the rich life of our school. We take great pride at ISP in providing a warm and welcoming environment for all ISP community members. We believe that providing students with a safe, supportive and nurturing school is essential for them to successfully learn and develop. We also take great pride in our highly experienced, dedicated faculty who are committed to engaging students in an authentic global education. Please take the time to read the ISP Mission Statement, which can be found in the parent handbook and on our website. The ISP Mission is more than just words on a page - it encapsulates our school’s purpose, vision and values. All ISP community members (teachers, students, parents, staff, board members and administrators) are expected to support and model our core values of compassion, integrity, respect and intercultural understanding. The ISP Mission is the standard to which we measure ourselves in all aspects of life at ISP. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s experience at ISP, or any other issue, I urge you to “go to the source” and speak with the person directly responsible. Whether it is your child’s teacher, the principal, another administrator or the director, we are all here to ensure that ISP continues to be the best school in the region and one of the most highly regarded international schools in the world.

New Parent Orientation All new ISP parents are requested to attend an orientation meeting on August 19 at 09:00, in the Theater. The purpose of this important meeting is to: — Meet the School Administrators —  Understand the areas of responsibility within the school —  Receive an overview of the year’s important projects, events and activitities —  Learn how you can take an active role in the life of the school —  Hear about the SCA (School Community Association) and its plans for the year.

Communication is key

Effective communication is vital in our international community. We regularly send information through: — Friday Folders (Elementary School) — Parent Contact (a daily email) — School Net (http://web.isp.cz) — ISP Website (www.isp.cz) — Teacher Websites — Facebook — SMS Emergency Contact System

The “Parent Contact” email is an important source of daily information for parents. If you find that you are not receiving this email after School starts, please send a message to klimova@ isp.cz as soon as possible.

Transportation Services

Please be aware that ISP does not provide daily transportation. Agreements reached with transportation companies are between parents and the company.

Child Care

is available in the Theater Foyer during the orientation meeting.

Identity Badges

All staff and parents are required to wear their ISP photo identity badges while on campus. You will need your badge to enter locked doors. Until you receive your badge and pin number, you are requested to wear a visitor’s badge, which can be obtained from the Reception desk. ISP security guards and staff will ask you to show your badge. To obtain your identity badge, see the receptionist.

Special Note Regarding Student Drop Off

For those parents who use the rear entrance of the school to drop of their children, please be considerate of our neighbors in the vicinity – please only park in designated parking spaces; under no circumstances should anyone drive onto the sidewalk or block driveways (even if only “dashing in for a minute”). Thank you for helping to maintain our good relations with the community.

The school provides ample holidays and time away from school. We trust that the school calendar will be respected and that extra holiday time (early departure, late return, extra trips during school) will not be planned.

Information Fair & Welcome Picnic Welcome to ISP!

Make sure to mark Saturday, August 30, on your calendar. That is the annual ISP Information Fair and Welcome Picnic which will be held from 11:00 to 14:00. The fair is an excellent opportunity for new and returning families to meet and make new friends. Everyone will have an opportunity to meet the new staff members on an informal basis. You will also have the opportunity to meet with many businesses and services here in Prague, including: medical centers, banks, activities for children, movers, technology, sport centers, hairdressers, restaurants, and many other appealing services. The fair begins at 11:00, the picnic at noon. The food service will sell barbecued food, salads, ice cream, and drinks.

Fun Fair for Kids

Bring the little children too - the Upper School Microfinance Club will be hosting their popular Fun Fair with many fantastic games, bouncy castle, face painting and a chance to win an adorable plush animal. We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

Important Dates:. WEDNESDAY, August 27 Hopes and Dreams Conferences TUESDAY, August 26 13:00 - 14:30 PK and KG Back to School Afternoon THURSDAY, September 4 at 18:00 Grade 3 – 5 Parent Evening THURSDAY, September 11 at 18:00 Grade 1 and Grade 2 Parent Evening THURSDAY, October 9 at 08:15 Parent Coffee Morning, ES Theatre

Dear Elementary Parents, As the beginning of the school year approaches we would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning families to ISP. We hope that you are all enjoying time with family and friends, having fun and relaxing. All teachers and staff are busy preparing a rich and challenging environment for our students, one in which your children will feel safe, happy and able to learn.

We know parents are integral to this process. We will keep you informed throughout the year and frequently ask for your input and perspectives. Please come to us with any questions or concerns that may arise!

Hopes and Dreams Conferences We will be inviting you early and often to actively participate in your child’s education. Our first invitation to you is to meet with your children’s teachers in “Hopes and Dreams Conferences” on August 27. All Elementary classes PK3 – grade 5 will be dismissed at 12 noon on this day. These special conferences are intended for parents to share with the classroom teacher their hopes and dreams for their child this year. Each conference will be scheduled for 10 minutes. In the first Friday Folder on August 22 you will receive your scheduled time and a short form to jot down notes of what you would like to share with the

teacher. Our goal in holding these conferences very early in the school year is to learn from you about your children. As the year progresses we will continue to communicate with you via newsletters, notes, email, class websites, meetings, and conferences. The Hopes and Dreams Conferences are only the first step in what we trust will be our on-going collaboration with you.

SCA Elementary School Parent Coffees Another way of participating in your child’s education at ISP is to attend the SCA Elementary School Parent Coffees. This year we have scheduled four morning coffees at 08:15. Once again we are in the process of identifying topics of interest that can focus our conversations and contribute to our shared understanding of the children in our care. Watch for the parent survey in the first Friday Folder. Our first Parent Coffee Morning will be on Thursday, October 9 at 08:15 in the ES Theater.

Children PK3 through grade 2 should be escorted to their classroom by parents. Students in grades 3 to 5 may come into the building by themselves. At dismissal time, an adult should pick up children in PK3 through grade 2 outside their classroom door that opens to the outside of the building. Students in grades 3 through 5 should be met in a prearranged location. You will be receiving a form in the first Friday Folder to let the school know what arrangements have been made concerning future meeting points. (Please see section on after-school supervision.) PK3 students will be on a special schedule until September 9, PK4 students until September 1. Children in Kindergarten will be dismissed at 12:00 until Thursday, August 28.

After School Supervision

Please remember that an adult should supervise Elementary School students at all times and in all places on campus after the 14:45 dismissal. Students may stay at school if they are participating in an after school activity or if working in the library. Once an activity ends, usually at 15:45, the students must go home. No Elementary student is allowed to stay at school unsupervised, whether in school or on the playground. Grade 3 through 5 students may work in the library until 17:00, but they must be in the library, not elsewhere in the building. We looking forward to collaborating with you in the coming school year! ALL Upper School students are required to possess an ISP-approved 13” Apple Macbook laptop computer as a necessary tool within our academic program. A Laptop Handbook and Digital Citizenship Agreement has been supplied to all families (and can be found on our internal website http://schoolnet.isp.cz). The full review and commitment to these agreements, by both parents and students, is an important prerequisite for participation in the 1-to-1 Laptop Program.

GRADE 9 STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BRING THEIR LAPTOPS TO SCHOOL UNTIL WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, WHEN THEY SHOULD BRING THEM TO SCHOOL FULLY CHARGED. On this day, Grade 9 students will attend a day-long special orientation program, which guides them through the set-up of these machines and the installation of the licensed software. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Peters, Upper School Digital Learning Facilitator.

ISP Learning Research and Development Welcome to Learning@ISP, where we believe that we are all life-long learners striving to collaboratively meet our Mission. Given this belief, we strategically research and develop student, faculty, staff, and parent learning.

Student Learning

ISP has an articulated, mission-driven PK-12 curriculum, rooted in inquiry where learners are involved in posing and investigating questions. Our learning program offers students the life-long understandings and skills that enable them to be successful at ISP, and in their future educational and professional pursuits. For more details, please visit our community portal (http://schoolnet.isp.cz/index.php/curriculum). Our curriculum research and development is based on the following premises: ● The curriculum development process is ongoing and forward looking. ● Student learning evidence drives curriculum evaluation. ● Transfer is the primary learning goal of the ISP curriculum.

● ISP uses backwards planning when developing units of study. In planning grade level or course level units we follow these steps: 1. Identify key understandings and skills we want learners to understand and be able to apply. 2. Determine how we will know to what extent students have learned these understandings and skills. 3. Design the learning plan (classroom activities and resources).

Professional learning:

Throughout the year, faculty and staff are involved in learning both here at ISP and off site. On site learning includes focus groups, professional learning days, retreat days for targeted groups, faculty meetings and internal sharing of expertise. In addition, we encourage and support attendance at targeted workshops and conferences at ISP, online, in Europe and around the world.

Parent learning:

Throughout the year, we invite you to participate in workshops, presentations and discussions about what, why, and

how we learn here at ISP. Please look for dates, times and details in the ISP Parent Contact. We offer the following opportunities for parent learning: • Parent Coffees: These presentations and discussions target sectional specific and age related issues in the Elementary, Middle, and Upper sections of our school. • Informational sessions regarding specific learning areas: This year we will be holding targeted workshops in the areas of Modern Language, Mathematics, Science, and PE/Health. • Edge in Education: In these thoughtprovoking sessions, organized in collaboration with the SCA, we engage in discussions around current and future trends in education. I look forward to delving deeper into Learning@ ISP with you this year.

Teresa Belisle (tbelisle@isp.cz) Director of Learning Research and Development

Activities and Athletics Greetings from the Activities office and welcome to the new school year at ISP. From the IT Department Welcome to our new and returning families!

IT Update and Information The Petr Mares 1 to 1 Laptop Programs

In the Upper School, will be entering its 6th year, and we look forward to welcoming our Grade 9 students to the program. Mr. Michael Peters will be coordinating and managing the program as our Upper School Digital Learning Facilitator. In the Middle School, the program is now entering its seventh year and managing the program is our Middle School Digital Learning Facilitator, Lyle Bobyk.

Mobile Technology in the Elementary School

In the Elementary School, the iPad program is expanding with a 1 to 1 iPad program in Grade 2. We will continue using our 3 iPad carts of 20 iPads per cart in Grades KG, 1 and 3. and continue facilitating our Laptop “Macbook

Air 11” program in Grade 3-5. These tools continue to be integrated in meaningful ways to enhance the curriculum and student learning. Blogs: We continue to work throughout the school with (http://edublogs. org). This medium is proving itself to be a wonderful way for all students and faculty to share their class work and their personal reflections. Elementary School faculty present their personal class websites on Edublogs. In the Middle School, students are working with Google Sites and Blogs as they develop their Portfolios. In the Upper School, students and faculty use blogs to convey their reflection on learning within their different curricular topics.

Surveys/Feedback

Every year, we survey our Middle School parents, students and faculty about the Petr Mares 1 to 1 Laptop. Again this year we received overwhelming positive feedback from all stakeholders. Although positive feedback certainly

makes us feel good, we do tend to focus on the constructive criticism. This year’s survey highlighted the need to continue providing and promoting discussions, resources, and strategies that will help us all find balance with between our online and offline lives.

Digital Citizenship

The IT and Library departments will continue to work closely with faculty, counselors and school Principals to educate students on Digital Citizenship. This Digital Citizenship program is integrated in the laptop orientation programs, homeroom classes, advisory and other special assemblies throughout the year. The IT & Library Department look forward to supporting you and your child this year; we wish you and your family a successful year at the International School of Prague.

Alumni Class Notes Class of 2005 Andrej Vukotic Class Correspondent

andrej.vukotic@gmail.com

Hello everyone, and many thanks to my classmates who took a moment to drop me line to include in our first “Class notes” section. If you don’t see yourself here and you’d like to include some news for the next Inspiration newsletter, please contact me at the email address above – your classmates, former ISP teachers, and other members of the ISP family are eager to hear from you.

Kelly McCarthy writes, “During college at Lindenwood University, I studied for one year (2007) at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, and spent six months with Second City in Chicago. I graduated in 2009 with a BFA in Acting then moved to NYC to attend the 2 year Professional acting conservatory at Circle in the Square on Broadway, from which I graduated in 2011.

I then started pounding the pavement under my stage name „McKenna Fox“, and within a year I was a proud member of Actors Equity and SAG-Aftra. I‘ve been working professionally as an actress, comedian and voice-over artist. I am very excited about the next chapter - I am starting this summer my

Masters in Public Relations (with a focus on Sports & Entertainment) at Iona College; I will be taking evening classes at Rockefeller Center while continuing to pursue my acting career during the day.”

Almaz Tchoroev writes, “Although I

studied Arabic for three years and even visited Syria (before the Civil War that has destroyed so many beautiful and historic cities), I unfortunately still haven‘t mastered the language.

Nevertheless, I completed my Bachelor‘s degree at the University of Manchester in Middle Eastern Studies and immediately began (and completed) my Master‘s Degree at the London School of Economics in International Relations (IR). I enjoyed LSE, but London is an expensive city! After my Master‘s was in the bag, I returned return to the Kyrgyz Republic where I started working for an Investment Bank; however, I quickly realised that it was not for me; I worked for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) for a year and then three years for USAID. Returning to Kyrgyzstan was an interesting experience, since living in such a young country one can truly experience history. I was at the main square during the 2010 Youth Revolution when 86 citizens where shot down by snipers. At OSCE, we were on the ground, analysing the situation and attempting to assist in any way possible. Now the Kyrgyz Republic is a parliamentary state, the only one in the region. I guess we’re back to being an „Island of Democracy“ in Central Asia. As the country developed I continued working at the development sector un-

til recently when I was offered a job at the BBC as a producer. So I’m now back in London (where it’s still very expensive!). Currently I produce and present daily radio and TV news, as well as extra shows such as the World Cup, where I was one of the pundits. We broadcast to the Kyrgyz Republic and it has been a great challenge. If anyone is in London give me a buzz...”

Ekaterina (Katya) Malysheva wri-

tes, “I went to the London College of Fashion to study Broadcasting /Journalism/Marketing. To be fair, I barely went to school but somehow finished it in the end. My first job was for Chris Blackwell‘s start up company (Audiotube) which digitalised music content & syndicated it across all sorts of platforms. In my third year I became General Manager & met all sorts of cool rock stars like Robert Plant & Axel Rose. At this point my friends started working on a documentary project in Egypt called „The Square“, about the Egyptian revolution. I became involved as a production coordinator, which was a dream come true.

„The Square - Al Midan“ was an ongoing project for 4 years, and I also worked on another documentary: „Pussy Riot - The Trial“. Both films were short listed for the Oscars, and „The Square“ was nominated. I got to go to tons of film festivals like Sundance, Toronto & Berlin and meet all sorts of inspiring people. When we went into

post production, and both films were sold, I went to Burning Man with the film crew. There I got the idea to make festival fashion as I saw a growing niche in the market (plus I‘ve always loved catsuits, any excuse to wear one). I recently started a company called EKAT www.ekatsuits.com which is doing pretty well and taking up all my time.”

Reya Shawky writes, “After gradua-

tion from ISP, I spent five years studying economics and American studies at Hanze University Groningen, finishing with a bachelor of business administration in 2010. I moved back to Prague to work for a short year with Honeywell Aerospace as a project manager for their import compliance department. After that, I thought I should be a student forever and decided to do a Masters degree in management in Zurich. I focused my thesis on conflict management and dispute resolution in large construction projects where I shed light on the reasons why construction projects always go downhill and how to resolve these accordingly. I graduated in March 2013 and was accepted for a PhD in Manchester and Copenhagen as well as a private real estate international institution in Prague. However, I started applying for jobs and I am now working in the real estate department at Google Switzerland where I am in charge of space planning, interior design and many other nice things. I have two chihuahuas in Prague that I feel very connected to and if I am not working, I spend most of my days dancing salsa until the sun comes up. Zurich is amazing and I plan to make it my home for the future.”

Michael Farsky writes, “Following

our graduation in Prague, I went to Concordia University in Montreal, completing a degree in Sociology and Film Studies (two fields that have not since touched my professional life at all). After four years in school, I made short attempts living in California and around Europe, following different job offers related either to music or the software industry (including a brief return to Prague while working for Radio Free Europe). I spent most of 2011 in a van around North American and Europe as

a tour manager for a busy band. Then I returned to Montreal to follow up on opportunities as a musician. Currently, my main project, a band called No Joy, keeps me very busy as we are regularly touring worldwide and it leaves me with a very irregular schedule.”

Nathalie Katschner writes, “After

finishing my BA in Marketing, I did a 9 month internship at Lowe World Wide in London which was very exciting. After that I did 1 year at the Financial Times in the marketing department for FT.com, which again was a great experience but not that exciting. I then decided to do something completely different and joined a start-up tech company doing cloud-computing and virtual desktops. It was a blast and I got to travel to India and San Francisco and live in Palo Alto for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately like most start-ups the business didn’t survive, but it was an amazing learning experience. I currently work at LEK Consulting and I am engaged.”

Selma Telalagic writes, “I moved to

Cambridge in 2005 to study economics. I got my BA and MPhil. I was close to going off into the banking world but then got an offer for a funded PhD, so decided to stay for that too. Cambridge was an amazing experience, I keep getting nostalgic and wanting to be a student again! The teaching is great, they have this small-group system where you have biweekly tutorials with 1 or 2 other students, so that‘s where most of the learning takes place. During my PhD the tables turned and I got to be the teacher in the tutorials, which was super rewarding. I taught four years of first-year undergraduates, some of whom I am still in touch with. I have also been part of the interviewing team at one of the colleges in Cambridge, which is very difficult, as the kids (who are 17) are really nervous, feel like their whole life will be determined by whether or not they get an offer from Cambridge; it‘s tough to have to make that decision and say no to some of them. I finished my PhD last summer and moved to Oxford, where I am a postdoc at the economics department. That involves mainly writing research papers but

14

also a bit of teaching, although I now have to teach big classes for the Masters program, which is kind of dull... My research is about the economics of families, which involves answering questions like ‚is it better for kids if child benefits are paid to the mother or father?‘ or ‚do women get more educated if we have mutual consent divorce or unilateral divorce?‘ My position at Oxford is for three years, and after that I don‘t know what I‘m going to do; options include an academic career or an international organisation, or maybe even starting a business; yes I really should know by now but I‘m not sure at all what I want to do. I would also like to move back to Sarajevo one day. I live in Oxford with my partner, he‘s also an economics postdoc, in fact we met at the PhD program at Cambridge.”

Nikolina Nikolić Chaari writes, “Hi everyone! I am living in Vienna for the last 5 years almost. After ISP I went to Brussels and completed a BA in European Studies/ Int.Affairs. I came to Vienna to do my Masters at the Diplomatic Academy and I stayed here; I love this city. I did several internships at the Int. Org. I worked for an Int. Atomic Energy Agency for just over a year on Proj. Management in the area of Tech. Cooperation for the Europe region. After that I was home for some time as I have a little baby girl. I am married to a Tunisian and we have a 2yr old baby girl called Mia. I started working again last summer and at the moment I am a consultant at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization working in a Partnership and Results Monitoring Branch. I’m fighting to get in the organization on a fixed term basis but it is very tough. In any case, I enjoy my job and cannot complain. I still come to Prague from time to time so I would be very interested to meet up for a reunion etc. If ever in Vienna do let me know, I would be more than happy to see you.” Stephanie Friend writes, “I’m in my last year of medical school at Columbia in New York City. After four years of medical school in the US, we have to do additional training in our chosen specialty so I’ll be doing a paediatric re-

sidency next year (@Claire, if that future clinic of yours needs a paediatrician, hit me up!). I took a circuitous route to get here. After ISP (and inspired by Mr. Green’s econ classes), I decided to become an economics major at Yale to look at innovative ways to solve economic disparities. Medicine was always in the back of my mind with my mom being a doctor (some of you might remember she was being treated for cancer our senior year but now she‘s doing great, remaining cancer free!), but just because medicine seemed like the obvious path to take I wanted to explore as many other things as possible. I worked in South Africa evaluating an educational NGO that broadcast lessons across the country, as a Spanish-English translator in a health clinic for the uninsured, with UNICEF doing fundraising and awareness work, and as a health care consultant based in Boston advising on product launches and pricing methods. I ultimately couldn’t deny my calling to medicine so I returned to school. I decided on paediatrics because I love working with children and the economist in me enjoys knowing providing quality care to children has

the largest dividends.” And finally, a few words about me, Andrej Vukotic! I pursued a career of professional basketball player for a couple years after ISP and made a career over the course of 5 years with 3 clubs. I decided to drop the sports career and concentrated on obtaining my bachelor‘s in business from the Anglo-American University in Prague, which I did in 2010. While in my last year at AAU I simultaneously worked 2 jobs; one as an intern in the Prague US Embassy Commercial Department, the other as a part-time Account Manager at a long-established PR/Marketing agency. I continued down the PR/Markting path as a full-time employee for another year once I obtained my bachelor‘s degree. The last 3 years I work as the Head of Programme Development for an online learning company (www.studyinteractive.org). We specialise in partnering with reputable university partners and other educational providers to transform on-campus postgraduate / undergraduate and professional curricula into effective and dynamic online learning systems, using

various media-rich content and live tutor support on an engaging online platform. My ongoing interests are basketball, martial arts, travelling, photography and finance. I recently married my long-term girlfriend and have a british short-haired cat – we make our home here in Prague.

They created an Instagram page (Mokama Official) and a profile on Etsy (Mokama). Mokama is the official name of their small jewelry line selling fashionable armcandy bracelets. Since Moni and Kao travel quiet a lot, they are able to collect their necessary supplies from all around the world. As a result, their designs are always unique. Class of 2013 Bo Hitzert, Julien Mikton Class Correspondents bohitzert24@gmail.com

From movie-making to travelling and a fair amount of hard work, the experiences of the Class of 2013 certainly run the gamut, and as we put our feelers out, waiting for responses to start pouring in, it’s exciting to hear about the trials and the tribulations that defined the group’s first twelve months away from ISP. Though some have made their way further from the city - to Kurdistan, or California, or the tips of South-East Asia - it seems fitting to begin in Prague, where it began; especially as people make their way back for the summer, to paddle on the Vltava or walk the Upper School and see how things have changed.

Dinh Khang Duong, who attended

ISP for two years, spent his first year away from school in Prague, where he studied at the New York University’s local chapter. His year was nothing if not productive, as he focused his business acumen on the start-up which he founded at the University, providing food and beverages to classmates. He will be leaving Prague for Illinois Tech come fall. Not far from him, Deni Chermoev completed his first year of University at Prague’s Anglo-American, where he balanced school with work at the Lobkowicz Palace and a week spent busily attending to the members of March’s

YPO conference. He is currently spending his summer working at a hotel in Turkey, where he plans to stay until he leaves for Rotterdam’s Erasmus School of Business in September. Ashkan Khamsehpour, who will also be leaving Prague for Rotterdam to study film at the SAE Institute, spent his gap year working. He had the opportunity to film a number of commercials for various companies in the city, as well as taking courses in Sound Engineering to prepare himself for his industry of choice. Like Deni, Ashkan spent a week in March working at the YPO conference hosted in Prague. There were also a number of 2013 graduates who, despite having left Prague, elected to stay close to the city. In the Netherlands, Bo Hitzert spent her gap year completing two online courses: one in marketing, and one in economics. She has also been working part time in a local store, as she prepares to attend Erasmus University to study International Business Administration in the coming months. Just north of her, in the coastal city of The Hague, Kristyna Dlouha successfully finished her first year of Hotel School. She will spend the first six months of her second year in Florence, where she will be interning at the Four Season’s

Michelin star restaurant, before returning to the Hague to continue with her degree. Sara Hadzic has completed her first year studying European law at Maastricht University, while just across the channel, Ema Exnerova has also been busy studying law, at Queen Mary University in London. Ema is currently spending her summer working for an American law firm in Prague. Also in the UK, Klara Ovcackova finished her first year at King’s College in a European Politics program. She loves the course, and has also been enjoying her time in London, volunteering weekly for the elderly and participating in a running club. Nam Son Trinh has been studying management at Royal Holloway University. His experience has been very positive, especially when it comes to meeting interesting people, and he is looking forward to continuing with his degree this September.

Tina Hui Zhou, who has finished her

first year at the University of Warwick, is now back in Prague enjoying some well-deserved free time. She spent the year as a member of the ultimate Frisbee club and competed on a National level, as well as becoming a publicity and communications executive.

ISP Newsletter  August 2014

Two members of last year’s graduating class will begin studying in the UK this fall: Marie Stehlik, who spent her gap year working as a hotel manager and eventually a company manager in the north of the Czech Republic, and will be attending the University of Nottingham in September, where she plans to study Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, and Till Stackmann, who was also on his gap year. Till spent the time interning, both for an artist in Prague, where he learned the ins and outs of sculpting and bronze casting, as well as SEAT, where he had the opportunity to design an alloy wheel of his own, which may even go into production. After attending an art school to work on his sketching skills, Till will begin studying product design at Sheffield Hallam University. In Switzerland, Nany Nguyen completed her first year at Les Roches hotel school. She studied hospitality, and as part of her course, spent the last six months on an internship in Abu Dhabi. Also in the Middle East, Rudan Balay has been incredibly active as a student of International Studies, with a focus on Middle East relations, at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, in Kurdistan. She is the president of an organization called Student Ambassadors for Peace, with whom she has organized exchange programs to Western countries for students of her University, as well as a tolerance walk around the city. She regularly volunteers for a refugee camp in Kurdistan, and can be seen below with classmates:

Also in Asia, though for different purposes, William Lobkowicz spent a month of his gap year travelling through Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, with fellow classmate Julien Mikton. Both will be leaving for the United States, where William plans to study History and Slavic Studies at Harvard University, and Julien plans to study Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Michigan. Already in the United States, Aydin Shahidi is studying Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Davis, and has been spending his free time as an active member of the school soccer team, as well as Engineers Without Borders. He will be working as a sales representative as well as an IT specialist for a car dealership this summer, with a number of opportunities lined up ahead within the IT capital.

Sukho Moon, studying at the University of California, Berkeley, has been trying to join local start-up business teams to get a first hand experience at start-up procedures. As a member of numerous in-school organizations, such as the Resident Hall Association and Internship Info-Providing Club, he has been enjoying his time in the United States, though he says he still misses ISP and most of all, Czech beer. On the country’s other coast, Nicole Lim Yen Ting, who is attending the College of Arts and Science at NYU to pursue a degree in Environmental Science and Economics, has been spending non-scholastic hours as a member of NYU’s largest green club, the Sustainability Task Force. She is also an avid runner, and has competed for the University’s track and cross country teams.

Ye Jin Choi, another student who has made New York her home, is enjoying her time at Julliard. In addition to participating in a piano quartet, she has had the opportunity to perform at the school, and will be attending a music camp in Korea over the summer to meet professors and other student musicians.

19

At Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, Tom Wilmots is planning to continue his double major program in Engineering and Economics after spending the summer working on statistical analysis and forecasting for CSOB in Prague. And in warmer climates, Alexia Bossan, who is studying medicine at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, has become incredibly involved in her community during off hours. She started a chapter of Coaching Corps, an organization that provides coaches and creates sports teams for undeserved neighborhoods, and volunteers in the Emergency Room at Florida Hospital, which she hopes has given her some preparation for interning in pediatric gastroenterology, reconstructive plastics and neurosurgery this summer. In Georgia, Lukas Borovicka has had a successful first year studying film at SCAD, in Savannah. One of the short films he worked on, called The Gift of The Magi, can be seen at the following link: https://vimeo.com/97236894. Outside of school, Lukas has continued to play volleyball, and has won three tournaments as a member of his school’s Intramural team. He also filmed and edited a promotional video for the Lobkowicz collections last winter, and hopes to intern as a writer for a Czech TV show in the next few months. Which brings us, last but not least, to

Emma Beer-Beauchamp, who is

back in Canada and enjoying her time at McGill. As a member of the German Student Association, she is looking forward to being in charge of their events and meeting people as she explores new parts of Montreal. Her studies in the coming year will focus on Canadian political economy, as well as intensive German courses, which she will be dedicating 6 hours a week to. We wish her, and all the other graduates of 2013, a wonderful summer and are looking forward to seeing where the next twelve months will take them! Bo Hitzert & Julien Mikton
