Whether your kids are just starting kindergarten or entering the final year of upper school, there are many good reasons for you, the parents, to get involved at your child’s school. It's a great way to show your kids that you take an interest in their education, and it sends a positive message that you consider school a worthwhile cause.
We need you! There are a number of events that take place at ISP on a daily basis. And the only way that we’re able to run this number of events is through Volunteers.
Volunteers – a Wonderful Gift to the Community! These people have realized that everything they do adds greatly to the education and experience of ISP students and families. They help with sporting events, drama productions, the Cabaret and Food Fair, or even ISP clothing sales. They serve as Room Parents in the Elementary School, and Representatives in the Middle and Upper Schools. In fact, they wrote the book you’re now holding.

There is a Volunteer position for everyone, whether it’s just acting as a Chaperone on a field trip, housing a visiting Student, or making a larger commitment as a member of the Board of the School Committee Association. Please consider volunteering at some level; whether your work is directly with you child’s class for a couple of hours, or with the larger school community throughout the year, your help makes ISP a better place for all our children.

INTRODUCTION This Handbook is a work in progress – it is as dynamic as the country in which we live.
The information that you’ll find in here is intended to be a starting point; while it may seem quite broad, we hope you will find it useful. If you find errors (and you will find them!), or if you have suggestions or comments, please let us know – better yet, join us by Volunteering to make it better next year!
While this Handbook is printed only once per year, the ISP and SCA websites are contantly being updated – any changes that you suggest are generally incorporated into those sites relatively quickly. The SCA website also has information that you won’t find in this Handbook, such as links to sites about Czech culture and customs, English-‐ language news and information sites, tourism, performance schedules/ticketing, traffic laws – anything and everything that expats need to know. YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF ISP Each year, every member of the ISP community is asked to support the Annual Fund by making a financial contribution that is meaningful to them. ISP is a non-‐profit institution – all income goes towards supporting the education of our students. It is supported not only by tuition, but by these donations from Parents, Alumni, Corporations, Faculty, and many others. When everyone gives to the best of their ability, the additional support (the amount beyond tuition alone) allows ISP to maintain its reputation of unsurpassed education in the Czech Republic -‐ and beyond. An ISP education today includes a student body of around 800 students from over 60 countries, over 115 Faculty members, another 90 Staff members, all situated in a custom built campus on 6.6 hectares (16.3 acres). That's a Student to Faculty & Staff ratio of about 4:1. Maintaining these attributes is not inexpensive, so it is only through the benevolence of our donors that ISP can continue to offer its unique form of education while keeping tuition costs competitive. We hope that you will respond with understanding, enthusiasm, and generosity (according to your ability) when asked to support ISP. Without your participation, ISP cannot continue to be the same School that attracted you to it in the first place. If you would like to learn more about the effect of philanthropy on ISP, please speak with any member of the Annual Fund committee, any Trustee, the Director, or the Advancement Office, or visit the school’s website.

ISP EVENTS
Cabaret
A high-‐level show put on by teachers, parents, alumni, and others, for the ISP adult community. To perform, keep an eye out for audition info or visit the Development Office. Takes place in October.
Halloween
Halloween is held as close to October 31st as possible. Witches, goblins and ghosts welcome! Come dressed in your favourite Halloween costume, go trick or treating and play traditional Halloween games!
International Food Fair
A very popular ISP tradition: culinary delights from all over the world, as prepared by ISP parents. A tasty event for the entire family.
Seasonal Arts and Crafts Fair
Held at the school near the beginning of December; the Fair showcases hand-‐ made and other items created in the Czech Republic. The Fair is an opportunity for shoppers to purchase these traditional gifts before the winter holiday, and is considered a high-‐point of the year.
Night at the Palace
The event of the year, and ISP’s offical fundraiser for Scholarships. This annual, high-‐profile event is held at one of the palaces at Prague Castle on May 7th, 2016. It starts at 19:00 and continues late into the night. The event, encompassing the entire Palace, includes a Silent Auction, features multiple musical acts, food stations, a Martini Bar, cigar rolling, Casino tables, and much more. Invitees include the ISP parent community of over 60 nationalities, faculty & staff, Alumni, representatives of companies that support the Scholarship Program, and Czech community leaders. Not to be missed!
Welcome Back Barbeque & Information Fair
A back-‐to-‐school event for the whole school. ISP hosts this annual event to bring students, parents and staff together with local businesses providing a range of goods and services available to our community. The event is held from 11:00 till 14:00 on Saturday, August 29, 2015. The picnic lasts from 12:00 p.m. to 14:00 p.m. Food service will be selling delicious food, salads, beverages and ice cream.

ISP GLOSSARY Adult Education
An SCA sub-‐committee that organizes classes for parents (language, cooking, crafts, etc). Found on the notice board near the Dining Hall.
Annual Fund Fundraising for the Annual Fund takes place every year. Donations to the Annual Fund confirm the community’s desire to go beyond the cost of tuition to purchase items and programs that will have an immediate impact on current and future students. It elevates ISP to the level of excellence that tuition alone cannot provide.
Bulletins Middle and Upper School On the ISP website, www.isp.cz. Lists academic schedules, activities, news, birthdays, etc.
CEESA The Central and East European Schools Association (www.ceesa.org). Oversees inter-‐school athletic and academic competitions for the Middle and Upper Schools.
Friday Folder Elementary students take this folder home on Friday; contains school notices and information from the teacher.
Let’s Go This SCA sub-‐committee organizes a variety of trips for parents throughout the year, including shopping, practical, and cultural expeditions.
Newcomers
A term for ISP families who are in their first year at the School.
Newcomers Coffees A series of meetings that take place at the start of the year; provides an opportunity to discuss interests, share information, and socialize with other parents.
Newcomers Committee An SCA sub-‐committee providing practical help with your transition to Prague and ISP.
Parent Contact e-‐mails Currently ISP’s method of communicating high-‐level happenings and information to parents. Please make sure that the school has your email address (send to blimova@isp.cz).

Parent Handbook The handbook provides you with the school procedures, policies, rules and expectations.
SCA The School Community Association. The mission of the SCA is to promote active partnerships among the students, parents, faculty and administration. It is lead by an elected Executive Board, and all parents are automatically members.
SCA Coffee Mornings A chance for the SCA board to provide updates on all SCA activities and events. The meetings take place the second Wednesday of each month at 8:15 in the theater.

Scholarship Program The goal of the Scholarship program is to make the ISP educational experience available to a diverse range of students. The Scholarship program at ISP is partially funded through donations to the School from parents, corporations, Alumni, and others. These Scholarships are based not only on financial need, but also merit; ISP Scholarships are available to Czech citizens and other residents of the Czech Republic. Currently, scholarships are only granted to students in the Upper School (Grades 9-‐12).
School Directory Contains contact details for faculty, staff, students and families. Highly confidential and must not be reproduced or used for any commercial pruposes whatsoever.
Sport Boosters This SCA sub-‐committee supports the Athletic Department by providing food at home tournaments and coordinating Sports Banquets throughout the year.
STROODLE Student and Faculty Learning Environment. Middle and Upper school students use this to find homework assigned by teachers. Teachers may post grades and comments so kids and parents (if you know your child’s password) can see how they are doing.

IDENTIFICATION BADGES • All Parents or drop off/pick up designees are required to wear a picture badge while on the ISP Campus. • Parents should see the Receptionist at the Main Entrance to request their badge. Please be prepared to have your picture taken and provide a form of ID for the badge. • If you fail to bring your badge to school, please see the receptionist at the main entrance for a visitor’s badge. Picture identification will be requested prior to receiving the visitor’s badge. • Your badge number works as an entry code from 7.50-‐16.00, if the gates are locked. Use the front pedestrian gate or the back ES gate. • If you lose your badge, you must pay 250Kč for a replacement. DINING HALL • Open from 7.30 – 16.00 • Full Service, open to students, faculty and parents. • Meet your friends for breakfast, coffee and tea, lunch or after school for a snack and drink. • Monthly menus available from the food counter. • Take-‐out meal service is available for busy parents. • The Dining Hall website is available through the school net. Log in with your child’s cafeteria ID number to view account balance and a complete record of your child’s cafeteria purchases.

LIBRARY • Open from 7.30 – 17.00 (closes at 16.00 on Fridays) • Elementary School Children are allowed to check out 1-‐ 4 items at one time, depending on their grade. • Middle School and Upper School are allowed to check out 5 items at one time. • Parents are allowed to check out up to 10 items. • Items may be kept for up to 3 weeks and renewed if necessary. • Computers are available to parents as long as students don’t need them. • Complete Library Usage Rules are outlined within the library. BULLETIN BOARDS • ISP MAIN RECEPTION – this board is for everyone’s use and is great for buying/selling items, or looking for services such as babysitters, cleaners, hairdressers and much more. • HALLWAY LEADING FROM THE RECEPTION TO THE CAFETERIA – these boards have information from the ISP Board of Trustees, and from the School Community Association (SCA), including information about upcoming school and social events. SCHOOL FACILITIES The play areas and tennis courts are available for use outside school hours. Enter through the main school entrance with your security badge or through the right-‐back entrance. A map of the school gates is available at the main reception. Before accessing the playground outside school hours, please read the Playground Rules on the ISP website – once you log into the School-‐Net, click on the Resources section, then Documents. SCHOOL DIRECTORY The directory is a comprehensive listing of all the staff and students at the school. The annual school directory is usually distributed around the autumn break. Class lists are available from teachers or room parents to use until the directory is distributed. PLEASE NOTE: THE CONTENT OF THE DIRECTORY IS HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL – IT MUST NEVER BE COPIED, AND MUST NEVER BE USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES OF ANY KIND.

ELEMENTARY AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
There is a full program of After School Activities (ASAs) available for grades 1-‐5. Most activities are free, and are run by teachers. Exceptions are offsite activities, e.g., swimming, ice skating, etc. ASAs usually take place within the first hour after ES dismissal on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are different activities offered each trimester – your child will take home a list to choose from beforehand. Typical activities in the past have included: 1. Sports/Games – e.g., gym, handball, floorball, tennis, swimming, floor hockey, soccer, tennis, rollerblading, cooperative games, etc. 2. Arts/Music/Drama – e.g., pop-‐up card making, cross stitch, handcrafting, recorders and bells, guitar, African drumming, dance/movement/drama, etc. 3. Academic/Life Skills – e.g., cooking, nature hikes, gardening, chess/board games, Kid Pix, etc. Children are allowed to do two or even three activities, subject to availability. There may be other classes available organized by parents. Look for information on the SCA section of the website (www.isp.cz), the bulletin board in the Cafeteria hallway, or “Parent Contact” emails for details. In the Elementary School it is also common – and very easy – to organize ‘playdates’ for your children to meet with other children outside school hours. The School Directory is very useful here! MIDDLE SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
There are a wide variety of after-‐school activities organized for Middle School students including intramural and interscholastic sports, band, choir, clubs and academic competitions. Usually you will be informed about Middle School activities through Parent Contact. The students also receive sign-‐up forms. Other activities may be offered by teachers during the school year to meet the different interests of students. These activities are promoted to students through Middle School Bulletins, during advisory blocks, through posters, etc. UPPER SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
A wide variety of activities is available to Upper School students. Some programs are based on clubs, organizations, or interest groups, and some students extend the day further by participating in sports programs. Organization meetings occur weekly, some monthly, and a few by semester.

ELEMENTARY ROOM PARENT SYSTEM Every class in the Elemtary School requires one – preferably two – volunteer “Room Parents.” These volunteers are the liaison between the teacher and other parents in the class. While it’s a year-‐long commitment, responsibilities are usually limited to organizing an initial coffee morning for all parents in the class; preparing and maintaining a class list; welcoming newcomers who arrive in the middle of the year; and coordinating parents’ involvement in any special class activities (all in conjunction with the teacher). The greater the involvement of parents in their child’s class, the better the experience for all children in the class. To volunteer to be a Room Parent, please speak to your child’s teacher as soon as possible (even if school has already started). It is a great way to get involved as a newcomer! MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES Middle and Upper School Representatives act as liaisons between teachers and other parents. Responsibilities involve organizing an initial coffee morning (to give parents a chance to socialize and learn what to expect in middle/high school), followed by other coffees throughout the year to discuss any topics of concern. Other responsibilities include organizing social events for the students and coordinating parents’ involvement.

You can request them to meet you at the Emergency Room if you think it is medically necessary. You can also check that your insurance is valid. Note that hospital treatment is not expensive compared to some other countries. Typical expense is 1000-‐2000Kc, though of course it could be more.

Treatment • •
Some ISP parents report that hospital staff did not want them to stay with their child during the child’s treatment. If you want to stay with your child, you may need to insist. When your treatment is finished, you need to pay at the Foreigners Department. If the Foreigners Department isn’t open, you will be asked to come back to Motol the following day. It is possible to pay by cash or credit card. There are several ATM/Bankomats at the hospital.

If your child is sick, he/she should stay at home; however, please do call the school secretary to let us know about the absence. WHEN SHOULD I KEEP MY CHILD HOME? Sometimes it is hard to tell if your child needs to go to school or stay home. Here are a few tips to help you make the best decision. Fever: A temperature over 37.6 C / 100 F, is considered a fever. Children must be fever-‐free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-‐reducing medication) before returning to school. Vomiting or Diarrhea: A child who vomits or has diarrhea must be isolated from other children for 24 hours. If your child vomits during the night should definitely stay home the following day. Consult your doctor if symptoms continue for more than 48 hours, or if the condition appears to be worsening. Colds or Flu: A runny nose by itself is not necessarily cause to keep your child home. However, if the runny nose is accompanied by a headache or nausea, or the child is too tired to concentrate, he/she should stay at home. The flu usually starts suddenly and may include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, diarrhea and vomiting. Strep Throat or Scarlet Fever: Both are highly contagious and need treatment with antibiotics. If your child is diagnosed with a strep infection, he/she must have been taking prescribed antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Crusting around eyes or very red, sore and itchy eyes can indicate pink eye, which is highly contagious. If your child is diagnosed with an eye infection, he/she must have been taking prescribed antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school. Rash: Any rash of unknown cause should be considered contagious. Please have your child examined by a doctor to determine the cause and communicability of the rash before sending him/her to school. A blistery rash, especially if accompanied by fever and a history of exposure, may be chicken pox. Keep your child home until you know for sure. If it is chicken pox, he/she will need to stay home until all areas are scabbed, usually 6-‐7 days.

Head Lice: Are a fact of life, and have nothing to do with hygiene. They are easily transferred from person to person, so for this reason, children with lice are not permitted in school until there are no live lice detected, and the nits are gone. Please do not let embarrassment prevent you from informing the school nurse if lice are discovered on your child; there is no reason to be embarrassed, and early detection may allow us to prevent a difficult infestation on other students.

AFTER HOURS EMERGENCY PROCEDURE When there is no nurse on duty at school (after working hours, during weekends) you can: • Contact an English speaking ambulance operator by dialling 112 (from a school phone dial 0+112). • Tell them the address (Nebušická 700) and let them know if the person is unresponsive (it is very important as they will then send a properly equipped ambulance). • If you do not have Czech insurance, the ambulance may cost Kč 2500, if the situation is not life-‐threatening. • It is good to inform security or reception that an ambulance has been called (220 384 111 or 220 384 400) • Signs explaining these “After Hours Emergency Procedures” are posted throughout the school. USEFUL HEALTH-‐RELATED INFORMATION Food allergies: Severe food allergies are becoming more common. Certain food allergies can be life-‐threatening, especially those to peanuts and shellfish. TICK SEASON
What is a Tick? A tick is a small, blood-‐sucking mite, which can attach to humans or other animals. They are brown in color and range in size from a sesame seed to an eraser on the end of a pencil. When? They are active from Spring to Autumn. Where? Ticks can be a common nuisance in parks, forests, bushes, and in shady and humid woodlands. They are present in urban and rural areas. How to protect yourself: • Application of insect repellents on any exposed skin as well as on socks and camping gear. • Dress sensibly when camping or hiking. Ticks travel upwards, so cover ankles, legs and arms. Tuck trousers into socks. • Check yourself regularly for ticks (especially after outdoor activities). Ticks may appear “bloated” if they are engorged with blood. • Vaccination against tick-‐borne encephalitis is available. It is strongly recommended for those spending time in high-‐risk areas. Your doctor will be able to advise you on any risks associated with immunization and will provide you with further information. The vaccination is a series of three injections that can provide up to three years of protection against the disease. Tick Removal: • Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible with a pair of blunt tweezers. • Folk remedies, such as smothering the tick with grease, are NOT recommended. • Dispose of the tick in the toilet, or place it in a sealed container if you would like to have it analyzed for Lyme Disease. • The tick testing form and more information is available at www.kliste.cz ( in Czech, English, and German). Medical Conditions due to Ticks: Lyme Disease is the most common tick-‐borne disease – and no vaccination can protect you. Lyme Disease affects the nervous system, joints, and skin. It is treated with antibiotics. Symptoms typically start 2-‐30 days (though usually 7-‐ 14 days) after the bite. If you know you have been bitten by a tick, note the

date and mark the bite area, and be aware of symptoms that may appear within the next 30 days. Symptoms include: •
•
A “bulls-‐eye” rash at the site of the bite characterized by a clearing of redness in the centre. Some rashes may be very faint with little or no swelling and may be easily missed. Flu-‐like illness and swelling of the lymph glands near the bite and/or rash. Symptoms may be severe and include joint pain, muscle pains, headache, neck stiffness, fever or fatigue.
Not all ticks are infected, but if you have concerns or are bitten, it is always best to consult your physician.

CZECH POSTAL SYSTEM Czech post offices offers basic postal services, as well as payments for your telephone bill or make a donation to charity. Most post offices in the Czech republic divide their counters – or windows – according to function. The signes for various services provided at each window are generally listed. If you wind up in the wrong line, don’t expect to get what you want. In larger post offices, such as the main P.O. in Prague (Jindřišská 14, Prague 1), there is an automated ticketing system, with information in English about the various services. Here is a little guide for better orientation. Need to send a letter or buy postage stamps? Go to the counter where “listovní služby” is listed. Note, when sending a registered letter (“doporučeně”), you should complete in advance the postal slip “podací lístek” with the name and address of the sender (“odesílatel”) and recipient (“adresát”). Keep the slip for possible claim. Postal and payment slips -‐ “podací lístek” and “poštovní poukázka/složenka” respectively – are available mostly on a separate display, or next to the counter window at the post office. Look at the information desk where there are also examples of how to fill in the forms. If you need to send more than 5 letters, look for the counter labelled “hromadné podání” Need to send a parcel? Look for the sign “balíky” and, again, fill out the postal slip in advance. Boxes for mailing “velké krabice” are available at the desk. If you receive an announcement for “výzva” in your mailbox, it means you have received a registered letter or package while you were not at home. At the post office, go to the counter labelled “výdej zásilek” and have your passport or ID card available for identification. Be advised, though, that they sometimes ask you to pay a fee to cover customs then and there -‐ especially if the contents of the package are valuable or new. People advise always sending packages from overseas to Prague residents by registered mail or they will very likely not arrive.This is especially the case if packages contain anything valuable. If you want to pay bills go to the counter where “výplata poukázek” is listed. You can pay all kinds of bills at the post office, and regardless of whether it’s a gas or phone bill, you will pay through a “poštovní poukázka/složenka”. Phone, electricity bills etc. will include a postal order, with all the details printed on it, so that all you need to do is to take the bill to the post office with the relevant amount and pay it at the counter. Paying this way means you don’t need to fill

in anything. Remember however, once it's filled in, the postal person will run the poukázka (postal order) through the printer and give you the receipt -‐ so don't rip it off yourself. CYCLING IN PRAGUE Czech law requires that all children under the age of 12 wear a helmet while bicycling. The police have been known to issue friendly warnings on this matter, particularly in Horoměřice
TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE CZECH REPUBLIC If you hold a non-‐EU passport, and you have a Czech 1st-‐year visa, consult your national embassy BEFORE you leave the Czech Republic. The 1st-‐year visas which have been standard issue in the Czech Republic, the “type D”, have NOT been recognized as valid visas in the Schengen zone. Simply put, your visa gives you permission to leave the Czech Republic, but it does not grant you entry into any other country. If you are stopped outside the Czech Republic and do not have a valid visa for the country where you are stopped, you may find yourself in trouble.

(The Capital City of Prague Transport Company), whose total annual transportation volume is more than one billion passengers. Prague is served by a system of underground, trams and buses. How does the city transport in Prague operate?
Overview of Prague Public Transport Network The Public Transport Network consists of an interlinked system of trams, Metro (i.e. the subway/underground), local buses, and regional buses. Fares in the system are based on ZONES: the central zone, which includes all trams and the Metro, is Zone P (Praha). Zone P also includes all buses numbered from 100-‐299. It essentially includes all the “city limits” of Prague – the area marked as “hlavní město” on roadside signs. At the edge of Zone P are two secondary zones called 0 (zero) and B (border). Outside this central area you can imagine a series of rings. Zone 1 would be first, followed by Zones 2-‐5 in order. A “full” fare (see below) includes ONLY Zones P, 0, and B. Once you leave the city limits, you must validate a ticket for Zone 1. Zones are one of the most complicated aspects of public transport for expats; we don’t have room to explain the details here. A map of the zones can be found at: http://www.dpp.cz/en/transport-‐around%20prague/transit-‐schematics/ Once on that webpage, click on the top left icon labeled “Pražská integrovaná doprava (tarifní pásma)” and you will get a map of the zone system which you can magnify (believe us, you will want to!) and study carefully. Should you live outside the Prague City limits (Horoměřice is outside, while Nebušice and Přední Kopanina are inside) we recommend you consult a neighbor for exact information on what type(s) of tickets you need to purchase.
Metro The Prague Metro network consists of 3 lines designated by letters and differentiated in colour: green colour ( Depo Hostivař -‐ Dejvická station) yellow colour (Černý most station -‐ Zličín station) red colour (Ladvi -‐ Háje station),

with transfers possible at Muzeum station (lines A and C), Mústek station (lines A and B), Florenc station (lines B and C). Metro operates daily from 5 a.m. to 24 a.m. (1:00 a.m. on Fri and Sat). The time interval between train departures is approximately 2 -‐ 3 minutes during the workday rush hours and 4 -‐ 10 minutes during off-‐peak hours. Trams Daytime operation is from 4:30 a.m. to 24:00 a.m. (1:00 a.m. on Fri and Sat). Nighttime operation is from 00:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. and is provided by tram numbers 51 to 59 in the interval of 30 minutes. The central transfer-‐station for nighttime lines is Lazarska stop. Tram schedules are located at individual stops. Buses The daytime and nighttime operation of buses is similar to tram operation. Nighttime service is provided by bus numbers 502 to 514 and 601 to 603. Bus schedules are located at individual stops. Some buses have stops on the request (zastavka na znameni) in addition to the regular ones. To request the stop press the red buttons located throughout the bus. The Funicular The Funicular onto Petřín Hill operates along the route Újezd -‐ Nebožízek -‐ Petřín. The Funicular operates daily from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (April -‐ September) and from 9 a.m. to 11:20 p.m. (October -‐ March) with traffic intervals from 10 to 15 minutes. The information offices (see above ) can provide you with printed schedules of trams, buses and metro trains for any given stop; they are also available online. Phone: 224 235 085 Prague City Transport Fares Travelling by city transport is only possible with a valid ticket or pass. Tickets must be stamped in the validation machine onboard buses and trams, and at the entrance to the Metro. An unstamped ticket is not valid. Tickets can be bought at selected Metro stations or in Dopravní podnik Information Centers, hotels, at news stands, travel bureaus, department stores, etc. Single tickets can also be bought from the vending machines located at Metro stations or near some stops of surface transport. Bus drivers sell single tickets (for a surcharge). You may also purchase a ticket by SMS (see below for details).

Single Tickets: Transfer ticket 24,-‐ Kč / The ticket is valid for 30 minutes after marking. During off-‐peak hours, i.e. 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on working days and all day Saturdays and Sundays ticket validity is lengthened to 90 minutes. Transfer ticket 32,-‐ Kč / The ticket is valid for 90 minutes after marking. Note: Ticket-‐based travel is based on time, not trips. In practical terms this means that if you have a quick errand, you may be able to get there and back on the same ticket. Tickets purchased by SMS: If your phone has a Czech SIM card, and you have not blocked Premium SMS services on your phone (these can be activated free of charge by calling the operator's help line), you may purchase a ticket you need by texting “DPT+ticket price” to 902 06. Please see below: “DPT24” – ticket valid for 30 minutes – price: 24CZK “DPT32” – ticket valid for 90 minutes – price: 32CZK “DPT110” – ticket valid for 24 hours – price: 110CZK “DPT310” – ticket valid for 72 hours – price: 310CZK Note: SMS tickets are valid only within the Prague City: in practical terms, this means all trams and metros, and certain buses. At bus stops, local buses are listed in blue; regional buses in black. For buses serving ISP, 161 and 254 are local buses. The 312 is a regional bus; SMS tickets are not valid on it. Single tickets are ideal for those who intend to use public transport in Prague only sporadically. If you, or your children, travel by city transport (metro, buses, trams) regularly or every day, you may need an OPENCARD.
OPENCARD What is an Opencard? Opencard is a „smart card“, designed for Prague residents and visitors. It is issued by Prague City Hall. The Opencard is similar to the ISP lunch card; it is loaded, and reloaded, with an amount of money. Who needs an Opencard? As stated above, all adults and children above 15 years of age, who frequently travel by city transport, need an Opencard. Children aged 6-‐15 need an Opencard to qualify for free travel. The Opencard needs to be loaded with a “Free-‐Travel” application (one-‐time fee of 120 CZK).

How to apply for an Opencard? Applying for the card requires completing the Application form and the Data Processing Agreement. Both the forms in the English language are available at the ISP Reception. To apply: take 2 copies of the Application Form, 2 copies of the Data Processing Agreement, 1 photo as required, plus your and your child’s passport – these are required to prove the applicant’s identity. Where to go to submit the Opencard application? The DPP recommends that English speakers submit their Opencard application at the DPP Information Center at the Muzeum stop (Mon-‐Sun 7.00-‐21.00) which is staffed with an English-‐speaking attendant. You may have the Opencard mailed to your home, or you may have it held for you to pick up. In either case, the DPP recommends that English speakers have the card loaded for the first time at the Muzeum DPP Information Center. The validity of tickets can be checked by the ticket inspectors of Dopravní podnik at any time during travel or stay in the Metro system. The ticket inspector is entitled to ask the passenger to produce his or her valid ticket, to confiscate invalid tickets, and to collect a penalty in case of travel without a valid ticket: 950 Kč – to be paid at the office of the Dopravní podnik 500 Kč -‐ if paid at once 200 Kč -‐ in the case of unpaid freight To prove their identity, inspectors produce yellow-‐and-‐red badges. They issue receipts for the penalty amounts. In case you possess a metro pass and you have merely forgotten to bring it with you, you will only be fined a small fee, however, you will be obliged to give your details to the inspector and to visit the Dopravní podnik office at a later date and in order to produce your pass for inspection. Remember that children under 6 are free – but should your child look older than he/she actually is, you will be required to prove his age. Etiquette Czechs tend to be fairly quiet on public transport. Shouting, or even talking loudly across several rows of seats, is regarded as discourteous. Regional buses (300 and above) must usually be boarded from the front door; if several passengers are waiting to board, they will queue. Certain seats on buses, trams, and the metro are marked with a green cross, then a number. Elderly and/or disabled people have first priority for these seats. Try to avoid sitting on them, but if you do, yield them to a boarding passenger who might require them. Should an older person board to find all seats taken (not merely green cross seats, but all seats), a Czech will instantly rise to offer his or her seat. Baby carriage area: the back of each tram and the middle of each bus has an open space which is intended for passengers with prams. Please yield this space to boarding passengers who have prams. If you are on an extremely crowded bus, tram, or metro car, Czechs standing nearest the door will frequently get off to allow others to exit. They then step

back on once the crowd has passed. Don’t be afraid to copy this behaviour, fearing that you will not be able to reboard – it is a more civilized system than holding your ground and forcing several passengers to push past you before the doors close and they are stuck until the next station. Should a Czech be standing next to a person with a pram, he or she will frequently reach down to help hoist the pram on or off a tram or bus. Do not panic if this happens to you, it is a common courtesy. If you don’t want help, you can say “ne, děkuju” for “no, thank you”.
CZECH RAIL SYSTEM Is an enjoyable way of seeing the republic. Almost every town has a railroad station (nádraží), and side trips are cheap. The fast trains (rychlík) stop at major cities; local trains (osobní vlak) are slow, stop everywhere and usually have only second-‐class carriages.

Summer and Winter Tires A separate set of winter tires is highly recommended; these can be purchased from many dealerships.
Headlights and Seatbelts Drivers are required to use headlights at all times all year round. Drivers and passengers are required to wear seatbelts. Police can stop and fine you for not wearing a seatbelt. There must be seatbelts in the front seat. Drinking and Driving There is a zero tolerance policy on drinking and driving in the Czech Republic. Police will use breathalysers and if alcohol is present can make fines in excess of 1000 Kč. It may also result in a minimum of one year’s driving suspension.
Traffic/Road Signs The same set of standardized road signs are used all over Europe. As such, their meaning tends to be easy to understand. Diamond signs indicate priority. Red triangles are warnings. Red circles are restrictions. Blue circles are requirements. Squares and rectangles give guidance. Child Seats Children under the age of 12 must sit in the back of the car. Child seats must be used in the back seat of the car for all children 36 kg or less and 150 cm and under.
Documentation While driving, you must carry your passport, driving license, and car registration certificate and you must have valid car insurance. There are penalties for failing to present these documents. While you might be tempted to leave these documents in your car, your personal identification (prukaz) should be on your person. If you car is towed away, you will need to present your prukaz before your car is released: difficult, if it is locked in the car!

Turning Right at Lights with a Pedestrian Crossing BEWARE: Care should be taken when turning right at traffic lights where there is an immediate pedestrian crossing on your exit road. Although you have a green light to turn right, the pedestrian lights are often green at the same time. Pedestrians therefore expect, and have, right of way. Take extra care. Pedestrian Crossing Although by law pedestrians have right of way, in practice many drivers do not oblige and give way. Take extra care when using Pedestrian Crossings. Parking If you park illegally you will be fined or your vehicle may be clamped or towed away. Fines usually range between 330 Kc and 1000 Kc. Blue and Yellow Parking Lines • Blue: Residential Parking Permit only (parking sticker) • Yellow: It is forbidden to park where there are yellow lines What to do in an Accident / Emergency Numbers All road accidents are attended to by the police, no matter how minor, to ensure insurance claims are legitimate. You should notify them immediately and try to have contact with someone who can translate Czech for you. In a case of an accident: • put the reflex vest on • use the warning triangle • be extremely cautious of other cars when exiting the car especially on the highway • if someone is injured call 155 immediately and provide first aid • you don’t have to call the police unless 1 -‐ someone has been injured; 2 -‐ total damage value exceeds 50 000Kč ; 3 -‐ it is not evident who is guilty; 4 -‐ there is a damage to third party • if police are not involved, fill in the accident protocol which should be included in the insurance booklet

LEARNING CZECH Czech language is one of the Slavic languages that are commonly spoken in Eastern Europe. Czech, the mother tongue in the Czech Republic, is also closely related to Slovak, Polish and Serbian. The language also has some contribution to the English language. Some of the words that have Czech origins are pram, robot and pistol. If you have decided to learn Czech, the first thing that other learners or (especially) natives may do is tell you how hard it is. It’s got 7 cases, unpronounceable consonant clusters, irregular plurals, unrecognisable vocabulary, the hard-‐to-‐pronounce letter ř, etc. However, there is no challenge in the Czech language that you cannot overcome! Study tool recommendations: A great book that helps a lot is “Czech, an essential grammar”, which you can get directly from the Amazon UK or Amazon US site. It goes into great detail about word formations and very clearly explains Czech grammar in a straightforward way. It includes full translations of all examples used and with lots of important vocabulary in each chapter. “Czech Phrasebook” -‐ anytime you wait anywhere always have this phrasebook in your pocket. The dictionary at the back is small enough to get through a whole letter of the alphabet in a 10 minute wait for the tram, while still being big enough to cover most of the essential words. Then of course you can also learn the huge amount of phrases from a wide range of categories squeezed into this tiny book. If you are near a computer when studying, there are plenty of websites that can help too! There is a very detailed dictionary at Slovnik.cz , or a Wordreference’s Czech Dictionary for looking up simple words. Czech has great literature and can be a very expressive and difficult language to master. But if your goal is to just speak it, then there is NOTHING holding you back from this.

Krystal is the coarsest grain and is generally used for decorating cookies, cakes and pastries. It is often served with coffee and tea in restaurants. Krupice is granulated sugar and appropriate for baking. *Moučka or moučkový cukr is a powdered combination of starch and sugar, not pure powdered sugar like confectioner’s or icing sugar. It does have a smooth texture, and can be mixed with a warm liquid such as water or lemon juice to make a glaze. True icing sugar is sometimes available under the English name in large supermarkets. “Hladká mouka” is an all-‐purpose flour (also seen as *hladká special 00 extra). Its medium protein and starch content make it acceptable for most purposes. It can be used for both bread and cakes. This flour is not self-‐rising. Flour (of the best quality) -‐ in addition to mouka 00 extra special, it is also found under the name “pšeničná mouka svĕtlá”. “Krupice” (semolina/durum flour) is ground from durum wheat, the hardest grown. Durum makes a strong, sturdy dough frequently used for pasta.

“Hrubá mouka” is a coarse flour ground from hard wheat. This flour is preferred for making bread because of its high protein and low starch content. It is also used to make dumplings. “Polohrubá mouka” is a semicoarse flour. “Mouka bezlepková” is a gluten flour/high gluten flour. It is derived from hard wheat with starch removed and protein concentrated. Gluten flour is for people who can not tolerate wheat flour. Most milk is sold in Tetra Brik aseptic boxes. They have a long shelf life and the expiration date is stamped on the top of the box. Once opened, keep refrigerated and treat as fresh milk. All milk is sold with varying fat (tuk) contents. Something to watch for (but not always the rule) is color coding. The color Red usually indicates a high fat content, Dark Blue is usually 2% low fat, and Light Blue indicates the lowest fat content of 0.8% -‐ 0.5% fat, depending on brand. Madeta brand of “čerstvé mléko,” available in paper cartons in the refrigerated dairy case, is particularly fresh tasting. “Plnotučné” is 3.5% whole fat milk. “Polotučné” is 1.5-‐2% low fat milk. “Nízkotučné” is a 0.5% -‐ 0.8% low fat milk. These percentages relate to liters, therefore, polotučné contains 15 grams of fat per liter, nízkotučné 5 -‐8 grams of fat per liter and so on. “Kysaná smetana” is sour cream. Kysané, kyselé or kefirové mléko is sour milk very similar to buttermilk. “Smetana” or “čerstvá smetana” is plain cream – check label for the amount of fat content (tuk).
Condensed milk is available in small bottles in the dairy case and in small cans on the shelf. Sweetened condensed milk (zahuštĕné slazené mléko) .

“Čerstvé máslo” is fresh butter and the best choices when a recipe calls for pure, all-‐ purpose butter. “Stolní máslo” is second quality butter. Before the revolution it was also less expensive, but is no longer significantly cheaper. “Tuk do těsta” is a mixture of shortening and butter, best for making a pastry dough.
You will also see “máslo s rotlinným tukem” which is a mixture of butter and vegetable shortening – “Zlatá Haná” under the Olma brand is very good. Rostlinný tuk is a vegetable shortening (similar to Crisco) and sold in 250 gram blocks in the dairy case, 220 grams is approximately 1 cup in measure.
There are various brand of margarines sold in blocks and are suitable for baking – HERA or PERLA are good ones to start with. There are many tub margarines on the market with various fat bases (vegetable, corn etc.) and also “light” spreads. They are yours to experiment with in taste and preference, however, RAMA is a good one to start with. Look for cakes of yeast in the dairy cooler or “Instantní droždí” in the baking aisle. Baking Powder (“kypřící prášek do pečiva”) – look for small packets in the baking aisle under the Vitana or Dr. Oetker brand. Each packet contains approximately 1 tablespoon of powder. This is usually not Double Acting Baking Powder, which you may be used to. There is special baking powder for ginger bread – kypřící prášek do perníku. Self-‐rising flour you can find in Robertson (Jugoslávských partizánů 738/38). Baking Soda (“soda bicarbona”) – look for a small clear plastic bottles in the baking aisle. Tesco sometimes has boxes of baking soda with the International Foods. Also available in small packets as “jedlá soda.” Corn Starch (“kukuřičný škrob”) – under the Dr. Oetker brand it is sold as Gustin Maizena. Potato Starch – jemný bramborový škrob Vanilla Extract – you can find it at some Droggeries. “Vanilka cukr” (vanilla flavoured sugar) is sold in packets in the baking aisle. Under the Dr. Oetker brand you can find small vials of vanilla essence (lemon also). Sometimes bottles of vanilla can be found with the International Foods at Tesco. Chocolate chips – Available under the ShopRite brand at Tesco. But be warned, some bags are not of good quality; check the expiration date. Before chocolate chips arrived in Prague, chocolate chip cookie lovers bought large bars of solid chocolate (dark, milk or white) and chopped them into chunks for a very tasty cookie! You also have a guarantee of better quality chocolate. Orion semisweet baking bars, “Orion na Varenie,” are inexpensive and quite tasty. BREAKFAST CEREALS AND GRAINS
A small variety of Kellogg brand sugar sweetened cereals are well stocked in most supermarkets. Tesco is now starting to bring in their own brand of cereals.
