A glimpse at manufacturing in Apulia The natural stone sector This short publication has been produced to enable the Apulia Region to present its natural stone sector to those working in the same field elsewhere in Italy and abroad. It plays a leading role in the region’s economy and with a 5088 strong workforce and a total of 399 quarries, the natural stone sector is undoubtedly a major asset and one that continues to expand, especially on international markets. In 2013, in fact, exports in Apulian natural stone totalled 42,793 million Euros, some 15% more than the previous year. Determined to encourage economic growth as well as protecting the environment, the Apulian government has fostered expansion in this sector by backing technological innovation in how the stone is quarried and worked. The policies introduced also incentivise the sector to strengthen its business relationships at home and abroad as well as with associated industries such as construction, architecture and design as a means to generating economic growth and new jobs throughout the region.

There is an age-old tradition of skilled quarrymen and stoneworkers in the Apulia’s natural stone sector, and meeting the needs of both the Italian and international markets has always been a priority. Thanks to ad hoc initiatives introduced by the regional government, the sector is being encouraged to take on more of the different stages of working the stone locally, with a view to training youngsters and increasing the region’s economic potential at the same time. Just as the regional government is encouraging innovation in all the productive sectors, so the natural stone sector – like all traditional areas of production – is increasing the number of new products available thanks to the injection of creativity and technology in the design aspects of this field. It means that Apulian natural stone is re-inventing itself and finding new ways to introduce the “made in Puglia” brand to the rest of the world.

Various types of stone are quarried here and their beauty and physico-chemical characteristics, suitable for all aspects of construction, have made them famous throughout the world. Countless architects from both Italy and abroad use Apulian stone in the construction of churches, monuments and any variety of buildings and it has travelled to the four corners of the world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; across Europe, the Middle East, China and the USA.

APULIA, Apulia is a region in which natural stone is abundant; a land where rocks push their way to the surface and create a truly unique landscape. Here, more than anywhere else, stone has always been a raw material used by man and over time. it has become a real asset to the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy. Today, Apulia is the second most important quarrying area in Italy, with four active production areas in Apricena, Trani, Fasano-Ostuni and Lecce.

STONE, The vital force of the Apulian natural stone sector and its immense manufacturing capacity has turned it into one of the leading forces in the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy. Remaining true to its age-old traditions, it has never-the-less been able to achieve levels of excellence at each phase of the production chain, thanks also to a readiness to respond to changes in the market and to adopt innovative technology both in the way the stone is quarried and worked.

Technological development has allowed the sector to integrate economic growth with environmental protection as well as expanding its relationship with the worlds of construction, architecture and design. By adapting to the new paradigms of eco-friendly construction and the consequent increase in demand for natural materials, Apuliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural stone sector has been more than able to meet the challenge and expand its presence on international markets. In 2013 alone, exports in this sector reached a total of 42.793 million Euros, 15% up on the previous year.

The regional government believes that in economic terms, union is strength, which is why it has encouraged the establishment of productive business clusters aimed at stimulating growth in the region’s economic and industrial sector. Every cluster takes care of the needs of the businesses it encompasses becoming a tool for growth and development, promoting research and the sharing of know-how as well as the rationalisation of the entire production chain.

APULIA’S NATURAL STONE

The Apulian Productive Business Cluster was established in 2010, since when it has been working to develop and promote the sector, and in particular, in fostering the innovation of the entire production chain and reducing the impact quarrying has on the environment. The development of continuing training systems and schools for workers at all levels in this sector – whether post diploma or post-degree – has been one of the Cluster’s main objectives.

The Cluster is also working to establish a permanent watch dog for the natural stone sector with a remit to stimulate growth, innovation and research. Amongst the tools that the Cluster is making available to the sector is the first digital data base on Apulia’s natural stone, which, translated into several languages, will undoubtedly prove useful to designers around the world and promote the sector at the same time.

Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, Apuliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quarries are active throughout the year.

Commonly known as “Apricena stone”, the stone quarried in this part of Apulia, is calcareous and dates to the Mesozoic era and includes varieties such as “il Biancone di Apricena, il Filettato, il Filetto Rosso, Classico, il Fiorito, il Moganato, l’Ondagata, il Serpeggiante, il Serpeggiante Classico, il Silvabella and il Visone”.

Quarrying The most important quarrying area in southern Italy, and the second nationally, the Apricena (Foggia) district produces 90% of the natural stone quarried in Apulia and 20% of that quarried in Italy. Two methods are used to cut stone in this district, from quarries concentrated around Apricena, Poggio Imperiale and San Giovanni. The first uses diamond-edged saws to produce large slabs used for standard purposes, whilst the second simultaneously cuts the stone horizontally and vertically to produce smaller, unsquared slabs known as “sfilati”. Apulia’s favourable climate, which means the quarries are never idle during the year, coupled with the region’s natural stone processing and state-of-the-art production industry means that the entire chain is constantly developing and expanding.

IN THE

APRICENA DISTRICT

Apricena’s Biancone stone, which is an ivory colour tinged with pink, is often used for exterior cladding and paving. Other stones typical of this district that are much more brightly coloured are used for interior cladding and embellishments.

APRICENA STONE Apricena stone, one of Apulia’s best known natural stones, although much appreciated for its versatility and strength, it is its beautiful appearance that has earned it worldwide recognition. The stone is characterized by subtle hints of many colours that range from beige to ivory to pale pink, as well as recurring veins and threads that give it a very marble-like appearance. Its unique physical characteristics make it suitable for building and cladding indoors and out.

All types of stone quarried in the Apricena district have always been used to decorate important buildings and monuments, churches and public places. It can be seen in the decorative elements of the royal palace in Caserta, the church dedicated to Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo and in many of the region’s public buildings. It has also been successfully used abroad; the “Serpeggiante” variety, for example, has proved very popular in the Middle East whilst the Fiorito Adriatico and Filetto Rosso are in great demand in Germany, the USA and Canada.

Apricena stone is much in demand, both in Italy and abroad.

This large district boasts quarries in the municipalities of Trani, Barletta, Corato, Minervino and Ruvo di Puglia. Over the course of time, deposits of carbonate rock, characterized by the multitude of colours, have built up in layers that alternate with layers of clay, making it possible to date it to the Cretaceous area.

Quarrying The stone is of superior quality, and is quarried in two different ways. One involves cutting parallel to the ground following the stratification or grain of the stone, whilst the other cuts vertically against the grain, which highlights the veining and the different colours. Natural stone from the Trani district is compact and very strong and is used mostly for decorative architectural elements, cladding and exterior paving.

The most common types of stone quarried in the area are known collectively as Trani stone but can be separately identified as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ambrato di Puglia, Avorio di Puglia, Biancone di Trani, Bronzetto di Trani, Cocciolato, Cremamore, Fiorito di Trani, Giallo Antico (Etrusco), Melange (Melograno), Morato (Moresco), Perlato Bisceglie, Perlato, Svevo and Serpeggiante Trani Kf. Two types of natural stone are quarried in the Minervino area; Trani stone and the appropriately named, much sought-after Minervino stone that is slightly paler in colour.

TRANI

DISTRICT

Trani stone is often seen in the historic town centres of southern Italy – in old buildings, monuments and churches – including the cathedrals of Trani, Barletta, Bitonto and Bari, and also in the monuments seen in many squares throughout Italy. It was also used in Apulia to build castles, and the famous Castel del Monte shows off its solidity and beauty to perfection.

TRANI

STONE

All varieties of Trani stone have been used for centuries to build and beautify the region’s buildings. Colourful and elegant as well as compact and strong, they continue to be used in both modern civil construction and in the architectural field. Columns, capitals, skirting, door jambs, mantles, windowsills, flagstones, flooring, steps, wharfs and cornices have all been made from Trani stone – shaped by man for a multitude of purposes.

The solidity and beauty of Trani stone make it perfect for the construion of castles and monumental buildings as well as their decorative embellishments.

Built in Trani stone, Castel del Monte is a UNESCO World Heritage site â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Andria (province of Barletta, Andria and Trani).

The district is characterized by the diversity of stone quarried and it fact it has two very different types of stone. The first, concentrated in the municipality of Fasano, commonly known as Fasano stone is a calcareous stone very similar in nature to Apricena stone.

Quarrying

IN THE

FASANOOSTUNI DISTRICT

The Fasano-Ostuni district stretches across the province of Brindisi and boasts four quarries situated along the roads that link Carovigno, Cisternino-Ceglie and Ostuni-Martina Franca.

The second, found in the Ostuni district appropriately, known as Ostuni stone, is similar to the calcaranite stone found in the Lecce district in terms of its softness and appearance. Both types of stone quarried in this area are usually cut with a revolving disc saw and are used for both interior and exterior construction and decorative elements.

FASANO AND

Fasano stone is a calcareous stone from the Cretaceous era characterised by distinctive red lines caused by the presence of iron oxides. Known also as “Filetto Rosso Jonico”, the stone is fine grained with pale colours that range from a yellowy tinged white to pink. Its physicochemical properties make this tone suitable for use in exterior and interior cladding as well as stone furniture like benches, planters, flagstones, signage and monumental structures as well as religious furnishings such as altars, pulpits, choirs, tabernacles and bas-reliefs.

Not dissimilar in appearance to Lecce stone, the colour of Ostuni stone is ivory-white and is characterized by the softness of its cut edge and onsiderable compactness. This makes it an appropriate material for use in the building of houses as well as objects crafted by artisans, in furniture and for objects of design. Ostuni, known as the “white city of Apulia” is full of buildings made of this stone, which highlight both its beauty and its versatility.

OSTUNI STONE

The quarries in this district are, in fact, very particular, a prime example being the so-called “a grotta” quarries, located between Cutrofiano and Adrea that look much like underground vaulted caverns that have been dug out of the ground. Two types of stone are quarried in the province of Lecce, both a pale yellow type of Miocene limestone, but with a difference in the grain. The one with a finer grain is known simply as Lecce stone, whilst the stone with a coarser grain is known as “carparo”.

Quarrying Quarries in the Lecce district are concentrated in the area to the east of the town of Maglie, between Cursi and Melpigano and also Gallipoli and Alezio. The type of stone quarried in this district and the structure of the actual quarries make it unique.

IN THE

LECCE DISTRICT

In comparison to the harder, more resistent Carparo stone, Lecce stone is particularly soft - it can actually be shaped by the naked hand! Its malleability means that it can be seen in the capitals, spires and rose windows of historic buildings and churches in Lecce and throughout the Salento as well as in the decorative elements and friezes that typify the characteristically flamboyant Baroque style found in this part of Apulia.

LECCE STONE AND Lecce stone and Carparo, the two calcarenites found in the Lecce district are characterized by their malleability and the ease with which they can be worked - qualities that make them ideal for use in construction and architecture as well as in the creation of objects of design and furnishings. The intensity of the clay-rich elements present mean that both types of stone are also very sensitive to air-borne pollutants and particles and therefore need to undergo specific treatments to preserve their colour and lustre.

Overall the Apulia Region Government has activated investments of over 3 billion euro in its own territories, which is triple the base funds accessed from the public sector, at 865 million euro. For the next program of ERDF funds the regional government will provide allocations to the productive system of more than 2.4 billion euro, representing 44.36% of the entire regional ERDF Programme budget.

INCENTIVES The strategic push towards synergies in the spheres of enterprise and production has created experimentation, innovation and transfers of knowledge and know-how. At the same time, the Regional Government has made available notable resources for the promotion and support of Apuliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s different economic sectors. The resources originate in large part from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and are directed towards firms of different sizes, present in the various productive sectors active in Apulia.

DEVELOPMENT

Regional programme contracts for large enterprises 292 million euro were awarded to manufacturing firms for the development of activities and projects that have reinforced the competitiveness, the draw of investment and the development of employment in the region.

Regional programme contractS for the tourism sector With allocations of 50 million euro, this program has favored further growth in sustained off-peak tourism.

AID for medium-sized companies and consortia of small-to-medium sized businesses (Integrated Incentives Packages) 201 million euro were allocated for activities in manufacturing, service industries, agro-food processing and commercialization, to create employment, social stability and economic dynamism.

AID for medium and consortia of small-TO-medium enterprises active in tourism SECTOR (Integrated Incentives Packages for the Tourism Sector) Applying a budget of 54 million euro, this intervention has further raised the standards of quality and classification in the Apulian tourism offer.

Aid packages for micro & small business (Title II) Total allocations of 107 million euro have strengthened the economic activities of small and very small businesses, particularly through improved access to credit.

Aid packages for small Businesses for touristic sector (Title II â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Tourism) This instrument provided 25 million euro in aid to small and medium enterprises active in the tourism and lodging sectors, in management of tourist port and beach services, and to small and medium businesses that undertook new tourism and hotel initiatives, including the restorationrenovation of architecturally significant and historical properties.

Aid packages for innovative small businessES in early development This program, applying a total of 15 million euro, has stimulated the birth of micro and small enterprises based on productive applications of recent research results in the industrial sectors strategic to Apuliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regional development (new materials, advanced logistics, advanced ICT manufacturing, energy conservation and environmental enhancement,

Call for proposals: Internationalization Aid packages for OPERATIVE innovative small businessES With a budget of 15 million euro, this initiative has supported the consolidation and growth of innovative micro and small enterprise active in the strategic industrial sectors identified by the Apulia Region Government (new materials, advanced logistics, advanced ICT manufacturing, energy conservation and environmental enhancement, public health, agro-food systems). The program supported investment projects proposed by businesses already in operation.

Integrated incentive packages for small businessES Over 49 million euro were allocated to the most dynamic of small Apulian businesses, for consolidation, innovative restructuring and expansion.

The current call represents the first regional incentive program for business internationalization. With a budget of 20 million euro, the objective is to increase the number of exporters operating in Apulia.

New enterprise initiatives (NIDI) This initiative of the Apulia Region Government is directed at women, youth, the unemployed, persons subject to layoff, contract staff and the self-employed, who wish to begin a new business. The program provides 54 million euro in forgivable loans and mortgage financing, with investment insurance of up to 80% or 100%.

Regional technological clusters for innovation With a budget of 30 million euro, this instrument strengthens activities in industrial research, experimental development and innovation in micro, small, medium and large business, in the thematic sectors identified under the SmartPuglia2020 Strategy: Sustainable manufacturing; Environmental and personal health; Inclusive, creative and digital communities.
