What is a Zumba class? Zumba is a multi-cultural dance and exercise class which originated in Columbia in the mid 1990’s by three men: Perez, Perlman and Aghion. The word “Zumba” comes from a Columbian word which means to move fast and have fun. In 2001 the trio brought the dance movement to the United States. Today nearly 14 million people take weekly classes in over 140,000 locations in more than 185 countries. What is Zumba class? This is a dance and aerobic class led by teachers who have choreographed hour long dance/fitness classes. The sessions can be held in: • • •

The music is very dynamic with a Latin salsa and meringue beat. The beat is both fast and slow which is energizing and uplifting. The dance moves are influenced by the aerobic exercise and hip-hop movement combined with rhythms and moves coming from diverse international cultural and tribal backgrounds. Find a location near your home or work and take into consideration rush hour traffic. Put your class schedule in your planner each week and go and have fun!
