Breaking the barriers of

INCONTINENCE •

4.8 million Australians of all ages experience urinary incontinence; – Up to 37% of Australian women; – Up to 13% of Australian men;

When a toilet is found the bladder will contract and the urethral sphincters will relax allowing urine to be passed;

Adults void between 4 to 6 times a day;

Bladder capacity is approximately 400 to 600mls;

One of the biggest health issues in Australia.

The bladder relaxes to allow filling;

The sphincters contract to prevent urine leakage;

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF URINARY INCONTINENCE

Sensation of bladder fullness is recognised and interpreted;

Bladder contracts to empty and the external urethral sphincter relaxes together with the pelvic floor muscles.

Nearly 4.8 million Australians, 15yrs+ experienced incontinence; –

80% women, the major contributing factors are pregnancy & menopause;

Despite common belief, over half of the women living in the community with incontinence are under 50 years of age (1.7 million).

The total financial cost of incontinence was estimated to be $42.9 billion;

Your customer spends around $9,014 per year: – Continence aids are probably the largest single item of personal expenditure, comprising 70% of total personal costs.

WHAT IS ‘URINARY INCONTINENCE’? •

Involuntary loss of urine – also known as bladder weakness;

Not a disease, but a symptom to another health issue (such as Diabetes);

Can often be treated and always be managed.

NORMAL URINE VOIDING •

When there is approximately 200mls of urine in the bladder the pain and stretch receptors are stimulated;

This sends a signal to the brain via the spinal cord and the first sensation of the need to void is felt;

The bladder will continue to fill to 400 to 600mls and the sensation to void becomes urgent;

Urinary incontinence is a wide spread issue. It is not just limited to ‘older people’ and should NOT be considered a normal part of ageing.

THE URINARY SYSTEM Kidneys • Filter water & waste materials from the blood to form urine. Ureters • Transport urine from kidneys to the bladder. Bladder • Can expand to store urine & contract to remove it. Urethra • Outlet tube from the bladder to outside the body.

BENEFITS OF NASAL / SINUS WASHING

Coughs and colds due to viral infections can cause swelling in the nasal and sinus tissues.

Using a preservative-free saline nasal spray or a sinus wash may help clear and temporarily relieve congestion from colds and sinusitis1 because they:

When a mild upper respiratory infection develops in the nose and sinuses, the first symptoms tend to be a snotty, runny nose with lots of watery mucus. This is due to the nose trying to wash out the virus and inflammatory chemicals produced in the body in response to the infection. The mucus then begins to dry up, becomes thicker and even yellow/green in colour. This is a normal subsequent reaction and means the body is fighting the infection. If the mucus is diluted, thinned and washed out of the nose, it can help wash away germs and irritants and may result in temporary relief from congestion.
