Certain segments of paintball are genuinely more interesting than others, playing wise and from a spectators view. Each game can be broken down into three sections, the start, middle and beloved end. How these sections are played out depends on which team walks out onto the field and what opportunities the layout presents to them. Usually we see an eager and well thought out start followed by a somewhat slower pace of play and a highly satisfying end game. With Bitburg not being usual this year, except for the great atmosphere, food and weather, we see a lot of teams vexed over how the field limited their play. A dreadful feeling and experience but certainly not useless, since it makes us all appreciate and realise what high standards we have for how paintball should normally be played. Holding nothing back, making moves and pushing the game to another level.

One

With age comes wisdom, patience and a better understanding of things. These are crucial to success in life and crucial to success in paintball. The nature of our game is aggressive, forward and fast. Aspects which make us categorise it as extreme, explosive and different. Yet as much as those characteristics define our sport, so do intelligence, communication and patience. We were reminded of that not too long ago in Germany. Where teams with a great deal of talent and expectations saw there potential shoved straight into the dirt, face first. What went wrong they asked was often accompanied by a finger pointing to whatever excuse they could think of. Excuses that might not have been wrong to point out but not right enough to withhold them from victory.

So what was the key to victory? What made teams rise above the rest? Well they say with great power comes great responsibility, but in this case it was great limitations require a great deal of vigilance. For a team to gain the upper hand in this battle of restriction they were to resort to patience. That and a long breath of air, continuos flow of speech and a cool head during every moment of the game. Whichever team held of their instinctive urges the longest and whichever team remained levelheaded throughout every situation saw the odds turn in their favour. The waiting game was never so exhausting and rewarding at the same time.

Surely there’s a lesson to be learned here, a well deserved slice of wisdom for us paintball enthusiasts to take home and consume, there must be, there ought to be. Saying there is none makes it all so pointless and blue yet the answer you seek is barely any more satisfying. It’s the lesson of becoming fully aware of what it takes to win. Whatever gets thrown at you, no matter what the situation is, whoever’s waiting for you on the other side. You are able to cope, you are able to handle it and eventually turn it into your own. It is the lesson of becoming versatile, adaptive and being prepared to do whatever it takes. Even if it means sitting and shooting at nothing for what feels like an eternity.
