BITBURG & LONDON E uropean Masters Ca mpaign Cup How hard can you close your eyes and recreate, rewind the tape and play it again, there, right in front of you. How well can you retell the story of not only London, but also Bitburg, the two past-midway-may Millennium events of two thousand and thirteen. See, the mind has a funny way of mixing facts and fiction. Memories are easily adjusted and spun in our favour, moments become larger and more intense, our ego takes over and logic is set aside. Luckily there were plenty of witnesses taking notes. Let them refresh your mental picture, adjust your wild adventure, correct your memory, rid you of your illusions and make you forever and always remember the multitude of their photographic stories unified into the truth.

A day, week, a month. Every single moment prior to a major paintball event is crucial to whoever believes himself to be a top contender. The level of confidence built up during that period derives from the right kind of preparation or blinding ignorance acquired in said time. Whether the outcome matches the height of your expectations is depended on how high you have let your mind set the bar. One can dream of great things, think of a room filled with trophies and practice a speech over and over, but this bubble is fragile and so very easily punctured. Striving for a mirage far far away can be demoralising and downright heartbreaking. Reach for the stars but don’t look surprised when your first shot doesn’t leave the atmosphere.

Nada
The resemblance when looking at the teams gathering for each event is uncanny. Besides those with trembling knees there are countless lining up for the herd of perpetual success. Each and every one prepared to show their potential, their worth. They are present to deliver their definition of a stellar performance. But from that herd only a few are howling, only a few are hungry enough, only a few emerge as wolves. Some tread lightly, others shake the ground as they approach and there are always those that seem to fly from the very start. They are the ones prepared, they are the ones that keep their focus, they are at their very best. Among this wolf pack the dice is rolled and with it the die is cast. As it swivels, turns and eventually rests in its place, most are brutally awoken from their dream. Out of luck or without a chance. First place leaves nothing to be desired and in order to take it one shouldn’t have been a sleep in the first place.

Nothing
In hindsight, no matter what the outcome, we are blessed with the opportunities presented to us. Whether your story of it is drenched in honesty or filled with bullshit. We get to experience paintball and all it’s eccentricities. We live a life only a few can imagine within a sport that even less are aware of. So always be humble and remember; we choose to play paintball and endure its many flaws. Nourish all that the sport has given you and never lose sight of what playing personally means to you. Consider it a virtue.
