WELCOME TO BLISSFUL ADVENTURES ACROSS EUROPE'S MOST MAGICAL SPOTS Is there any better way to experience the great outdoors than by bicycle or on foot? We don't think so. With the wind in your hair, and the freedom to stop and explore whenever the moment takes you, it's a wonderful way to get right to the heart of a place. And because you can travel at entirely your own pace (be it lively or lazy), our holidays can be as restful as they are adventurous. Who are BSpoke holidays for? Simple: anyone who's relatively healthy, fit and loves to pedal or potter. Families, couples, friends, solo travellers... we work for everyone. From gliding down rivers on a Bike & Boat holiday or cycling through the lavender meadows of Provence, to purring up the Tuscan hills on an e-bike safari or walking through Slovenia's dramatic valleys, we offer lots of different options across Europe - tailor-made to suit you.

H AND-PIC K ED ROUTES Each of our routes has been carefully crafted by someone who loves cycling and walking as much as you. We've been off the beaten track to find Europe's best bits. And if you’re unsure which holiday is best for you, we can talk you through every twist and turn.

BSpoke holidays are all about exploring entirely at your leisure. Because we take care of all the details (flights, hotels and transfers, suggested route maps and luggage transfers) you can travel easy, with nothing weighing you (or your bike) down. All you need to focus on are the wondrous views, the historic sights... and how to choose between one lovely restaurant and another.

The best thing about all that exercise? It’s a great excuse to enjoy amazing food every day whether it's paella in Spain, rosti in Switzerland, or grilled sardines in Istria. And of course there's the wine... As well as sampling the local tipples, we’ve found you the nicest places to stay, too. The hotels and guest houses we've chosen are unique for their character and friendly welcome.

Looking for the truly soft option? Our sister company, Cycling for Softies offers 'gourmet adventures on two wheels' through France, Italy and Spain. See the back cover for details.

BRAND NEW CYCLING TO URS

M ORE B I KE & B OAT HOL I D AYS

We’re excited to be offering two brand new e-bike safaris in beautiful Tuscany. You can experience all the joys of Italy's most beautiful countryside... with a power boost up the hills. Tours are fully guided, with the option to self guide if you prefer.

We're adding more amazing holidays to our portfolio every year. As well as brand new cycling tours in France, Italy, Switzerland, Croatia and Portugal, we've also added Spain to our list of destinations, with a gastronomic adventure across Catalonia.

After the huge success of our Bike & Boat tours last summer, where you live on a 'floating hotel' that travels with you while you cycle during the day, we've added two new tours: exploring the serene coast of Istria in Croatia; and floating down the glorious Danube in Austria.

PERFUMES OF PROVENCE

From vivid purple lavender fields to sunflowers, emerald rivers and red cliffs, Provence is rich with colour - no wonder Van Gogh felt so inspired here. Indulge your senses, and wash it down with a glass of dry rosé.

A colourful landscape strewn with lavender fields, sunflowers and grapevines, Provence enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate - perfect for crafting its speciality, dry rosé wine. This route takes you into the Luberon hills through lush green valleys and ancient villages. The light here is dazzling - no wonder so many artists have painted the region’s varying vistas. And the food is wonderful too.

8 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Avignon, Nîmes or Marseille. Transfer by minibus or taxi to our base hotel in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. DAY 2 Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. The day is then yours to explore Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a beautiful town of narrow streets, attractive old houses and historical buildings. Its enviable setting amongst lush green valleys full of wild flowers is part of what drew many writers and artists to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence - most notably, Van Gogh who painted some of his best work here. If you’d like to get on your bike today, we suggest venturing into the exquisite surrounding landscape to the village of Baux-de-Provence. From its wondrous stone fortress perched high on a rocky plateau, the views of the Alpilles are superb. Another hidden gem

located a few miles from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is Eygalières, a small village of lovely stone houses covered in flowers. The chapel ruins here are worth a look, as well as the local history museum. DAY 3 Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Fontaine-deVaucluse: 25 miles (40km). Today you’ll enjoy a beautiful scenic ride along quiet lanes, winding through sleepy villages. The route crosses the River Vaucluse at Cavaillon, an attractive town renowned for its delicious melons. We suggest visiting the fruit market, picking out a perfectly ripe sample and eating it there and then, before continuing through rich and fertile fields of fruit towards Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, home to the most powerful water spring in France. DAY 4 Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Start your day with a potter around this lovely village, heading to the source of its fame, a powerful spring situated at the foot of a steep cliff towering 230 metres high. With an annual flow of 630 million cubic metres, the spring is the fifth largest in the world, feeding the crystal-clear Sorgue river, which soon turns a startling emerald. Once you’ve seen this mysterious wonder that draws so many tourists to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, we suggest hopping on your bike and cycling to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Hugged by the river Sorgue on all sides, it’s known as the ‘island city’, carved up by canals running through ancient streets. Alternatively, if the emerald-green of

the River Sorgue is making you want to paddle rather than pedal, you could opt to book a canoe trip to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. DAY 5 Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to Roussillon: 23 miles (37km). Today you’ll journey into the heart of the Luberon, stopping off at Gordes, one of the region’s most beautiful villages, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse. Tall, white and grey stone houses (some home to film stars) rise up out of the rock on which the village is set. At its summit lies an ancient castle overlooking the hills of the Luberon. The Abbey of Senanque is a must-see here. Hidden in the green valley, it’s still home to Cistercian monks who make honey, lavender essence, and liqueurs. From Gordes the route continues through the lavender fields to Roussillon. DAY 6 Roussillon. Time to explore Roussillon, a charming village situated at the foot of the Monts de Vaucluse. One of the biggest ochre deposits in the world, Roussillon is famous for its magnificent red cliffs and ochre quarries, rich reds and yellows contrasting with lush green pine trees and the vivid blue Provençal sky. In the afternoon we suggest cycling to the nearby village of Bonnieux. You’ll know you’re getting close when you spot its prominent church tower. Built on a plateau above the valley, the views from this cluster of ancient houses are amazing. At the top of 86

This is truly the heart of fairy-tale France - illustrated perfectly by the high number of spectacular castles on route, carefully preserved over the years for all to enjoy. Visit these fabulous once-royal homes and ancient riverside towns, pedal peacefully along the Loire à Vélo cycle path amidst birdsong and the aroma of hollyhocks... and sample world famous wines as you weave your way through sun-baked vineyards.

8 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Tours, Poitiers or Rennes. Transfer by minibus, taxi or train to our base hotel in Chinon, where you'll be equipped with your bicycle. Chinon is a beautiful medieval town set on the banks of the majestic Vienne river. Steeped in history, it was once King Henry II’s preferred place of residence. You can still explore the impressive 12th century Plantagenet Fortress, which was also home to Richard the Lionheart. DAY 2 Chinon. Once you’re ready to explore, we suggest a round trip route to the Château du Rivau. This fairy-tale castle with beautiful gardens was designed by the proprietor and modern art collector Patricia Laigneau as an historical recreation of Middle

Ages gardens. They are full of contemporary art installations, including carvings and giant legs running through the trees. Another suggestion is a ride to the small village of Rigny-Ussé, which boasts another ancient dwelling - the magnificent Château d’Ussé as well as amazing views of the Loire Valley from its location on the edge of the Chinon forest. DAY 3 Chinon to Montsoreau: 13 miles (21km). Today you will follow the Loire à Vélo cycle route which meanders along the river to the charming old riverside town of Montsoreau, often referred to as the ‘most beautiful village in France’. Along the way we recommend stopping at Fontevraud Abbey: a prison in Napolean’s day, and now a historical site, music and exhibition venue. The beautifully restored abbey complex includes a Romanesque abbey church with royal tombs, a lovely Renaissance cloister and a fascinating Byzantine-Romanesque kitchen. Once you arrive in Montsoreau you'll have time to walk or cycle along the river front towards the 'Château de la Dame de Montsoreau', which rises majestically above the water - it's the only one of the Loire castles that has its 'feet in the water' of the river itself.

DAY 4 Montsoreau. Today we suggest a day trip to Saumur, a beautiful town with a typically imposing château overlooking the river. Explore its wondrous wine cellars, wander down medieval streets, and enjoy feeling spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to dine. Alternatively you could cycle to Château de Brézé, another fine example of a classic French castle in the heart of the wine land, complete with underground tunnels and still-in-use wine presses that take their harvest from the surrounding 30 hectares of vineyards. DAY 5 Montsoreau to Azay-le-Rideau: 23 miles (36km). Today the route takes you along the Loire to the River Indre, where you’ll come to a beautiful medieval village; home to Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, built on an island on the river. Well worth a look, you can learn all about the processes involved in the restoration of this historic monument, during which stone-cutters and carpenter-roofers combined their talents to give new life to this jewel of the Loire Valley. The village has lots of lovely cafés and restaurants to peruse too. DAY 6 Azay-le-Rideau. After a relaxing morning in Azay le Rideau, we suggest cycling to Château Villandry, a Renaissance castle with amazing gardens

ALSACE AND THE RHINE VALLEY

Follow the wine route along the French/German border, enjoying blissful cycling through the Rhine river valley and the Black Forest, all the way to vibrant Strasbourg.

A journey not just through France, but Switzerland and Germany too - this wine-drenched tour of the Alsace and Rhine Valley features stunning scenery all the way - from the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains to brightly coloured historic towns scattered along the famous Alsace wine route. And of course, fabulous cuisine and superb local wine will fuel you every pedal of the way.

8 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Basel. Transfer to our base hotel in Basel and explore this fantastic, colourful Swiss city set on the edge of the Rhine river. There's plenty going on here, with lots of museums, art exhibits and an endearing old town to explore. DAY 2 Basel to Müllheim: 26 miles (42km). After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. Your route then begins following the much-loved Rhine cycle path across the border to Germany. Imagine idyllic, flat riding with a lush green mountain backdrop. Your destination is the town of Müllheim, located between the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest. Surrounded by undulating hills covered in vines, this attractive town is ripe for wine-making - you're bound to taste some delightful tipples during your stopover.

CYCLING AND WALKING HOLIDAYS

DAY 3 Müllheim to Freiburg: 21 miles (34km). Today the route continues into the Black Forest, beside beautiful wooded slopes and through lush vineyards, past the spa town Bad Krozingen. This sun-filled dwelling is the perfect place to stop if you're after some true relaxation - the town's natural thermal springs have been attracting visitors for decades. From here, it's on to Freiburg. This cheerful university town is known as the jewel of the Black Forest, with its gabled town houses, cobblestone lanes and plazas full of lively cafés. Blessed with 2000 hours of sunshine a year, it's likely you'll find yourself catching a few rays as you rest your legs and enjoy an ice-cold glass of wine. DAY 4 Freiburg to Colmar: 34 miles (55km). After a re-invigorating stay in Freiburg, you will cross over the Rhine to Neuf-Brisach, a 17th century fortified town shaped like an eight-pointed star. It was commissioned by Louis XIV in 1697 to strengthen French defences and prevent the area from falling to the Habsburgs. Moving on from this unique little bit of history, you'll cycle to Colmar - one of the most beautiful towns on the French wine route, and known as the capital of the Alsace wine region. Wonderfully preserved, Colmar is a riot of colour, looking as if it has jumped out of a medieval book of fairy-tales. Cobblestone alleys weave through the town, half-timbered houses painted in bold chalk-

box colours line the streets and bridge-laced canals. History is rampant; museums, churches and medieval buildings are liberally scattered throughout the largely traffic-free town. As if that weren't enough to keep you happy, there are several Michelin-starred restaurants and rustic wine bars to entice you in and fill you with extraordinarily good food and drink. DAY 5 Colmar to Riquewihr: 23 miles (38km). Today’s route to the gorgeous village of Riquewihr takes you through yet more vine-coated hills, through some of the most famous wine-making villages of the Alsace region, such as Eguisheim and Kaysersberg. Riquewihr itself lies at the foot of the Vosges mountains, and has been described as the most enchanting town on the Route des Vins. A true chocolate box cluster of twisting medieval lanes, hidden courtyards and half-timbered houses, this colourful town is the perfect place to sample the Alsatian Grand Crus and enjoy fabulous local cuisine. DAY 6 Riquewihr to Obernai: 31 miles (50km). From Riquewihr the cycle path heads to Obernai (we suggest a visit to the 12th century Romanesque church at Rosheim along the way). Obernai’s cobbled market square is framed by ancient timbered buildings painted in vibrant colours in typical Alsatian style. Narrow

Südtirol’s incredible natural beauty engulfs you on this tour, as you weave through deep valleys and apple orchards down to the shores of Lake Garda, before finishing near the impossibly romantic city of Verona. Ancient castles, rustic villages and vineyards punctuate the journey, all with a spectacular mountain backdrop.

1 0 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Verona, Venice or Innsbruck. Transfer by minibus, taxi or train to our base hotel in Sankt Valentin auf der Haide. DAY 2 Sankt Valentin auf der Haide. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. The day is then yours to explore Sankt Valentin auf der Haide and the surrounding countryside. Our suggested route takes you around the spectacular Reschensee, a lake famous for the rather surprising steeple rising out of the water. At the far end of the lake you arrive at picture perfect Reschen; the essence of a Tyrolean village. From Reschen you can also ride 2km to the summit of the Reschenpass for spectacular mountain and lake views over a picnic lunch. DAY 3 Sankt Valentin auf der Haide to Rabland: 35 miles (56km). At first glance, today’s route appears to

be longer, but it’s virtually downhill all the way, so you can enjoy glorious freewheeling through vineyards and apple orchards with a majestic mountain backdrop. Highlights include the village of Burgeis; Glurns, a beautifully preserved medieval settlement with its original city walls still in tact; and Schlanders, the capital of the famous Vinschgau. DAY 4 Rabland to Kaltern: 27 miles (43km). Following the Adige valley downstream, it’s no surprise this region is the biggest apple producer in Europe (they harvest 5 billion a year), as the route weaves between one apple orchard after another, with lovely towns and beer-stops along the way. We suggest lunch in Meran, a tranquil lakeside town nestled in a basin between soaring mountains. As you wind your way from here towards Bozen, the landscape feels increasingly Mediterranean as you approach Kaltern, a sunny region awash with cypress, fig and olive trees. After a happy day on the bike, you’ll have plenty of time to sample Kaltern’s finest export: the wine. DAY 5 Kaltern to Trento: 32 miles (52km). Leaving Kaltern now, you’ll have another opportunity for a refreshing dip, this time in the beautiful Kalterer See. The wine route continues through Tramin, another pretty town where there’s plenty to see, do and drink (the Gewürztraminer grape variety originates from

here). We end the day in Trento, an attractive Italian city brimming with culture and history etched out in the form of Renaissance-style monuments, frescoed houses, churches and museums. DAY 6 Trento to Riva del Garda: 24 miles (38km). You’ll start today with a helping hand, as we transfer you from your hotel to Cadine, about 6km away and, importantly, 300m above Trento. From here you can enjoy a beautiful downhill ride past numerous lakes (stopping for a dip whenever you fancy) and down the Sarca valley, where the river flows shallow and fast, forming waterfalls as it tumbles on. We recommend lunch on Lake Toblino, where a striking castle on the water’s edge now functions as a restaurant with a mighty mountain view. DAY 7 Riva del Garda. Lake Garda is too beautiful to simply pass through, so today you have all the time in the world to enjoy its various delights. From here you can also explore the nearby villages of Torbole and Nago where you can wander through the tiny backstreets and around ancient churches. That is, of course, if you can tear yourself away from the sublime shores and flourishing vegetation of shimmering Lake Garda itself. With lovely little towns to potter around, al fresco dining with a lakeside view, and swimming in the glorious blue water, you might not want to leave at all.

If you love dramatic mountain backdrops, this tour is hard to beat - especially as the cycle route means you get to drink in the views without having to do the climbs (enjoy an amazing train journey up into the mountains). Cycle along riverside paths, along valley floors, and through lovely villages; experience the glamour of St. Moritz, and the serenity of Lake Como.

8 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Milan. Transfer by minibus, taxi or train to our base hotel in Tirano, just 2km from the Swiss border. Located at the crossroads between Valtellina and Valposchiavo, this is where the ‘Bernina Express’ terminates - a spectacular mountain railway which climbs over the Alps and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008. DAY 2 Tirano. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. Before heading off for the day you might like to have a quick look around Tirano, a small town with a big mountain backdrop. After wandering along its winding streets, perhaps stopping for a latté in one of the sunny piazzas, and admiring the view as you look down the narrow river Adda that cuts through the town, it’s time to get on your bike and cycle to Grosio.

CYCLING AND WALKING HOLIDAYS

The route takes you along the ‘Sentiero Valtellina’ cycle path which follows the river to your destination, an ancient medieval village dominated by two castles and inhabited since prehistoric times. While you’re here you’ll have time to visit the park and the Romanesque church of San Giorgio before pedalling back to Tirano. DAY 3 Tirano to St. Moritz: 15 miles (25km). Today starts with blissful ease: a train journey on the Bernina Express, ascending from Tirano high into the beautiful Swiss Alps as far as the Bernina Pass. Arguably the most scenic Swiss train ride of all, you’ll enjoy incredible panoramic mountain views all the way to the top. From here it’s time to get back on your bike for the wonderful downhill stretch to Pontresina, a tiny village dominated by a pentagonal Moorish tower and the Santa Maria Chapel, with frescos dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. The descent continues into St. Moritz, the best known tourist resort of the Engadine. A renowned ski resort in winter that has lured celebrities and royalty for over a hundred years, there’s plenty to see and do here in summer, too. With its shimmering aquamarine lake, emerald forests and dramatic mountains, the town really sparkles. And when it comes to shops, bars and retaurants, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

DAY 4 St. Moritz to Chiavenna: 30 miles (50km). This morning the route takes you along the plateau of the Upper Engadine, surrounded by mountains and forests. You’ll come across the sparkling emerald waters of the Silvaplana, Champfèr and Sils lakes on your way - there are lots of lovely picnic spots here. From here you’ll reach the Maloja Pass, not far from the source of the River Inn. Your legs will enjoy a brief rest as you take a private transfer bus down to Val Bregaglia, a beautiful valley that connects Graubünden with Italy. The cycle route from here takes you back into Italian territory, where the cycle route of Val Chiavenna begins. DAY 5 Chiavenna to Colico: 19 miles (30km). After staying in the small medieval town of Chiavenna for the night, the route now follows the course of the River Mera, to Lake Mezzola. From here you continue southwards along the ‘Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve’ until you come across the River Adda, which flows into Lake Como. Colico is your stop for the night, a small town on the northern edge of Lake Como, at the base of the Alps Orobie slopes. Explore the town, relax on the lakefront beach or visit the famous Cistercian Piona Abbey, just 2km away. With sublime views of the lake and the snow-capped peaks in the distance, it's no wonder monks still live here today, selling the goods they make on site to the public.

Starting in dreamy Lake Garda, this tour takes you through peaceful Italian countryside to Verona, one of the most romantic cities in the world, before going deep into the wineland of Soave for wine tasting in the balmy Mediterranean climes. Leaving the open countryside behind, the magic and the madness of Venice calls, via Vicenza and Padova.

7 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Verona. Transfer by taxi or train to our base hotel in Desenzano/Peschiera. DAY 2 Desenzano del Garda to Verona: 28 miles (45km). After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. You then have some time to explore Desenzano. This small town on the southern shore of Lake Garda is comprised of narrow streets that wind their way from the town’s castle at the top of the hill, down to the lake and harbour. Stopping for a latté in one of the shoreside cafes is a nice way to acclimatise to the laid back vibe of summer in Italy, before taking to the saddle and cycling to Verona. With the Adige running through it, this is one of the most beautiful cities in the Veneto region. Made ever more famous by Shakespeare, we suggest visiting Casa di Giulietta, or

CYCLING AND WALKING HOLIDAYS

‘Juliet’s House’, where you can see the balcony from which she was wooed (albeit in folklore) by Romeo. Also worth visiting is the Roman Arena and the Church of San Zeno. DAY 3 Verona to Soave: 22 miles (35km). Today starts with a lovely flat ride through beautiful vineyards and the countryside beyond Verona. Your cycle route will join the ‘Strada del Vino’ (wine road) that leads to Soave, a renowned wine region full of vineyards and interesting medieval sights. The town itself (which means ‘smooth’ or ‘sweet’ in Italian) has 24 watchtowers and a medieval castle with spectacular views of the countryside from the upper ramparts. While you’re here, you must of course sample a bottle of the town’s namesake. DAY 4 Soave to Vicenza: 28 miles (45km). After breakfast at your hotel, your cycle route starts out relatively flat, then heads through the Colli Berici, a region just south of Vicenza. In these limestone hills, wine-growing dates back to man’s earliest settlement in the area, where the climate is balmy enough not just for the endless vines, but for olive groves too. The dramatic terrain offers up some beautiful views of Vicenza. The old part of the city is characterised by the striking private palaces and public buildings designed

by Andrea Palladio, the famous 16th century architect. Once a humble stone cutter, he eventually transformed Vicenza into a city of bold architectural innovation. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is as impressive for its dynamic exhibitions, bars and restaurants as its wonderful buildings and heritage. DAY 5 Vicenza to Padova: 30 miles (50km). Leaving Vicenza behind, today you will cycle to Padova, with plenty to see along the way. First we encounter the beautiful Palladian Villa Rotonda, another of Andrea Palladio’s architectural masterpieces and one of the most recognisable buildings of the Renaissance. Setting off from here along the Bacchiglione river, you will continue along the route to the fascinating city of Padova. With the river running through it, the city is comprised of bridges that criss-cross over the Bacchiglione, and a dense network of arcaded streets that open onto the ‘Prato della Valle’, one of Europe’s largest piazzas. We recommend visiting Giotto’s Chapel to view its stunning interior frescoes. And for food? The choice is huge - from informal pizzerias to traditional Venetian trattorias, the Italian fayre is rich and varied here - but as a city with a diverse population, there are restaurants and cafés here to cater for all tastes.

CYCLING THE ISTRIAN PENINSULA

From Muscat to Malvazija, this dreamy tour takes you from forests and rivers to ancient villages and colourful harbour towns - with wine sampling all the way.

TH E FI SH I NG POR T OF R OV I NJ I S AL SO K NOW N AS ‘ I STR I AN V E NI C E ’ , SWAPPI NG GONDOL AS FOR I TS V E RY OW N B OAT: ‘ B ATANA’

Immersed in the blue of the Adriatic, Istria is an exquisite mix of green forests, historic hilltop towns, vineyards and olive groves framed by the crystal clear ocean. And then there’s the wonderful flow of Istrian wine. This tour takes you along the glorious wine route, tasting your way through the medieval towns of Grožnjan, Oprtalj, Motovun and the former Roman colony of Poreč, to the beautiful fishing town of Rovinj.

8 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Pula or Trieste. Transfer by minibus or taxi to the base hotel in Buje. DAY 2 Buje to Umag. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. The route starts with easy downhill riding to the coast on the northern most point of the Istrian peninsula. Here you’ll find Savudrija lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the Adriatic, built in 1818 - and there’s still a keeper living inside it. The trail continues south to the small coastal town of Umag, founded by a Roman nobleman who decided to make it his summer residence. The old town is a clutter of Venetian houses, renaissance and baroque buildings and churches, all hemmed in the preserved city walls. Wend your way through the vineyards and olive groves to various wine cellars where you can sample Muscat or Malvazija.

28

CYCLING AND WALKING HOLIDAYS

DAY 3 Buje to Brtonigla and Novigrad. Today you'll cycle through the picturesque village of Kršete towards Brtonigla, a small historical town with 15th century churches and monasteries to explore. From here the route winds through more vineyards and olive groves - this is where the very popular Teran wine originates. Next you reach the attractive city of Novigrad where we suggest visiting an olive oil maker and tasting some of the finest olive oils in the region. Moving on from Novigrad, the route goes through the villages of Dajla and Karigador towards Lovrečica on the coast. The wine road continues through colourful Škrinjari, Babiči and Buroli, before winding back towards your base hotel. DAY 4 Buje to Motovun: 22 miles (35km). Today you cycle towards Grožnjan, a typical Istrian medieval town perched high on top of a hill overlooking the river Mirna. The beautiful St.Vitus and Modesto’s baroque church built in 1770 is worth a look here. Art galleries and studios line the cobbled alleyways of the village, which is known as “the town of artists”. From Grožnjan you’ll ride on quiet Istrian village roads to Oprtalj, a beautifully preserved town of narrow streets, Venetian palaces and covered passageways. From Oprtalj, enjoy some lovely downhill riding with great views of the Mirna river towards Livade, the truffle centre of Istria.

Enjoy your chance to visit the speciality truffle shop before continuing to the beautiful village of Motovun, perched high above the Mirna River Valley. Arriving in Motovun you’ll have plenty of time to explore one of Istria’s most well known medieval towns and its surrounding forest before dining in your next hotel. DAY 5 Motovun to Poreč: 24 miles (39km). Today you’ll cycle from inland Istria to the coast. Following the road to Višnjan, you will pass by one of the five most famous observatories in the world, before continuing to the town, enjoying wonderful views along the coastline of Poreč. While in Višnjan, it’s worth visiting one of the town’s many wine cellars - Malvazija is the local wine here. From here you’ll continue on towards the villages of Tar and Nova Vas (where you can visit a famous cave) before reaching Poreč where you’ll stay for the night. DAY 6 Poreč to Vrsar. Today starts with a visit to the 6th century Euphrasius Basilica - the most valuable cultural monument in Poreč. You'll then cycle to the village of Bacva, the highest point of today’s cycle ideal for a lunch stop. The route then heads down the coast to the town of Vrsar. With a commanding view of the coast, it is no surprise that the town was once a defensive fortress. Parts of the 12th century fortification system have been preserved, and the fortress-castle itself is well worth a look. From here the route passes

Funtana fishing village, and the villages of Zelena and Plava Laguna, along the coast back to Poreč. DAY 7 Poreč to Rovinj: 19 miles (31km). Today you can either cycle or take a transfer to the small town of Kanfanar above the Lim Valley. Cycling from Kanfanar, the route is pleasingly flat, passing inland villages enroute to Bale. We suggest visiting the Bembo Palace, city square and museum. The route from Bale passes the prehistoric hilltown of Monkodonja which was inhabited around 1800-1200 BC, before continuing on to Rovinj. This colourful fishing port was originally an island, but the channel that once separated it from the mainland was filled in to form this picturesque coastal town. Wander its narrow streets and explore its many historic attractions, soaking up its authentic charm as you go. Enjoy your final night in Istria, dining on the freshest fish - best served with a deliciously cold glass of Malvazija wine.

For those who wish to make an excursion by bicycle, there are plenty of paths and quiet lanes that wind along both sides of the valley. A short climb from the lakeside is rewarded by a long, winding descent to Kochel, a town oozing with Bavarian charm. DAY 4 Kochel. The town of Kochel lies on the shores of one of Bavaria’s most pleasant bathing lakes: the Kochelsee. To the north extends a flat moorland plain, crisscrossed by cycle tracks. On the eastern edge of the plain lies Benediktbeuern Monastery, originally founded in the 8th century. The remarkable architecture and lavish decorations, with a strong Italian influence, provide an attractive focus for a day out cycling. To the south, the Alps rear up steeply, offering a huge variety of interesting day walks. BAVARIA’S ALLGÄUER ALPS

A hidden gem in the most beautiful part of Germany, Allgäu has it all: epic mountain vistas, nature reserves, forests, medieval towns and magical castles... and wonderful Bavarian beer gardens.

The wonderfully unspoilt region of Allgäu is situated in a remote south-western corner of Bavaria. With spectacular scenery, this hidden gem offers up a range of exhilarating cycle routes through truly majestic territory, from wooded slopes to glacier valleys. And as always in Bavaria, you can expect superb hospitality, a great sense of tradition, fabulous food and satisfyingly refreshing Steins in the numerous beer gardens.

DAY 4 Pfronten. A charming Bavarian town nestling in the verdant Vils Valley beneath the towering Aggenstein Mountain, Pfronten features traditional Bavarian houses, decorated with murals and colourful window-boxes, lining the main street. A cycle route along the Vils Valley leads to Füssen, a pretty medieval town crammed with historic buildings. On a nearby outcrop, stands the fairy-tale vision of Neuschwanstein, the renowned castle built by ‘Mad’ King Ludwig.

1 1 DAY CYCLE TOU R

DAY 5 Pfronten to Oberstdorf: 24 miles (38km). To the southwest of Pfronten, the Vils Valley narrows and meanders between wooded slopes. A trafficfree cycle route follows the valley before crossing the border into Austria and emerging near the gorgeous Tyrolean village of Schattwald. A winding descent then leads to Bad Hindelang, a prominent spa resort with traditional houses bedecked with summer blooms. From here, the glaciated Iller Valley stretches south to Oberstdorf.

DAY 1 Arrive at Munich. Transfer by minibus or taxi to our base hotel in Bad Bayersoien. DAY 2 Bad Bayersoien. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. The day is then yours to explore Bad Bayersoien, a picture-perfect Bavarian village set beside the Soiener See, a pretty bathing lake. With the dramatic backdrop of the Ammergauer Alps rearing up from the south, a maze of cycle routes traverse a picturesque nature reserve to the east. DAY 3 Bad Bayersoien to Pfronten: 32 miles (54km). Quiet lanes reserved for the local farmers lead west through lush Alpine meadows to the Lech Valley. En route, you’ll pass Wies Church, a Rococo masterpiece. To the south, the imposing splendour of the Allgäuer Alps becomes yet more breathtaking as sleepy country lanes take us to Pfronten.

DAY 6 Oberstdorf. A lively town full of unique Bavarian character, Oberstdorf is one of Germany’s premier ski resorts. In summer, lovers of the great outdoors enjoy the fantastic cycling and walking available around here. Cosy cafés serving delicious cakes, Gasthofs with shaded beer gardens, chic shops and interesting museums all compete for your

attention. Best of all, the thrilling cable car ride to the towering Nebelhorn Peak will simply take your breath away. DAY 7 Oberstdorf to Hittisau: 22 miles (35km). Today’s ride is an absolute gem - a narrow traffic-free lane carves through the mountains to the west of Oberstdorf to offer the ultimate enchanting ‘away from it all’ route through a nature reserve with spectacular views at every twist and turn. DAY 8 Hittisau. Hittisau nestles in a beautiful Austrian valley amid the Bregenzer Alps. Close to the Swiss border, the architecture resembles that of its near neighbour - chocolate box chalets clad with intricate wood tiles and vivid flower boxes. Although the village is home to just a few hundred residents, Hittisau boasts three Michelin-rated restaurants which are rustic venues with an emphasis on delicious local specialities. Explore the superb scenery of this peaceful corner of Austria along its numerous quiet lanes and tracks. DAY 9 Hittisau to Bad Oberstaufen: 22 miles (35km). Fortunately for us, the pure serenity of this area still remains a well-kept secret - its tranquillity and exceptional beauty is truly inspiring: a cycling paradise of lush valleys dotted with picturesque farmhouses and immaculate villages linked by peaceful lanes. THE GOLDEN PASS LINE

Following the majestic Golden Pass train route (which means you can take the train up the hills if you wish), you'll experience beautiful Alpine scenery, big mountain vistas, easy lakeside cycling and dazzling Swiss cities.

FR OM YOU R FI NAL STOP I N W E GGI S, YOU C AN E NJ OY A C AB L E C AR R I DE U P TO R I GI K ALTB AD, FOR M AGNI FI C E NT AL PI NE V I E W S

From the bright lights of effervescent Zürich, to the gorgeous lakeside town of Lucerne, this tour lets you explore some of Switzerland's most attractive cities - with wonderfully tranquil cycling in between. Wending your way through blissful Alpine pastures, via picturesque villages and serene lakes, you'll experience the best of quintessential Switzerland with jaw-dropping mountain views along the way.

1 0 DAY CYCLE TOU R DAY 1 Arrive at Zürich. Transfer by minibus, taxi or train to your first hotel in Zürich-Regensdorf, where you'll be equipped with your bicycle. We suggest you spend the afternoon exploring Zürich on foot. This vibrant, culturally rich city is one of Switzerland's most 'hip' places to live and work - both modern and historic, cool and charming. Alternatively, if you're keen to get straight into the saddle, there are lovely woods to cycle around close to your hotel. DAY 2 Châtel-St. Denis to Gruyères: 12 miles (19km). This morning you'll be transferred by minibus to the start of the tour in Châtel-St. Denis, located high above Lake Geneva - which means a glorious, easy descent to warm up your cycling legs. You'll then follow the old ‘Käsestrasse’ (cheese route) to Gruyères, a pretty medieval town famous not just for Gruyère cheese which has been made for centuries in the

34

CYCLING AND WALKING HOLIDAYS

surrounding Alpine pastures, but also its wonderfully light meringues, served with double cream. DAY 3 Gruyères to Saanen: 16-25 miles (25-40km). Leaving picturesque Gruyères behind, the route now winds through Simmental and Saanenland. These idyllic pastures are dominated by the milk and cheese trade, the sound of cowbells clinking all around. Following the river Saanen, the route gently ascends along quiet, narrow roads with iconic Alpine views increasing in magnificence as you gain height. Passing picturesque villages such as Montbovon and Château d’Oex, you'll arrive in Saanen by late afternoon. Explore the village, or hop on your bike to Gstaad, just a few minutes down the road. DAY 4 Saanen to Boltigen: 12-16 miles (19-25km). Today's journey starts with a relatively steep climb. If you'd prefer to avoid this, you can opt to take the train from Saanen up to the pass crossing of Saanenmöser. From here the route descends nearly all the way to Boltigen along National Cycling Route No. 9, through Zweisimmen, passing many historic farmhouses along the way. DAY 5 Boltigen to Iseltwald: 24-34 miles (38-55km). Cycling through the Simmen valley today, dark wood chalets dotted amongst the trees, the route is downhill all the way to Spiez on Lake Thun, a pretty little market town well worth a visit. You could also

opt for a trip by lake steamer to Interlaken to avoid the busier road sections along Lake Thun. Situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with the famous mountain trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau as a backdrop, Interlaken has become a popular destination for paragliding, white water rafting and jet boating (if the mood takes you!), plus many more adventures. From here you'll cycle along the shores of Lake Brienz to the small lakeside resort of Iseltwald. DAY 6 Iseltwald. Time to rest your cycling legs and enjoy a relaxing day on Lake Brienz, surrounded by rugged mountains covered in thick forest. Enjoy a lake cruise across serene turquoise waters, visit Interlaken or head to one of the beaches dotted around the lake for some sunbathing and lake swimming. DAY 7 Iseltwald to Lucerne: 29-43 miles (47-70km) After your rest-day, enjoy a longer ride today, starting along the southern shores of Lake Brienz, with a few climbs along the way. The route takes you through the historic woodcarving village of Brienz and on to Meiringen, famous for its Sherlock Holmes Museum and the Reichenbach Falls where the famous detective fell to his death. From Meiringen we recommend taking the train to the Brünigpass to avoid a steep climb, re-joining the cycle route for a lovely downhill stretch through Alpine pastures to Lake Lungern and Lake Sarnen, towards Lucerne.

This tour along the sparkling Portuguese coast follows the Ecovia do litoral (Eco-Way) that links Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border with Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres) in the west. Meandering across stunning nature-protected terrain, pottering around charming fishing villages and beautiful beaches, you'll enjoy getting to know a very diverse coastline - diving into the shining ocean whenever you desire.

There's lots to explore here as you wander the cobblestone streets: the ruins of a hilltop castle, an ancient Roman bridge, Gothic and Renaissance churches, historic gardens and shady plazas with lovely cafés and restaurants. And away from the bustle, yet conveniently close - the superb beach of Ilha de Tavira.

prestigious resorts, and the seafront at Quarteira. Vilamoura is one of the most luxurious resorts on the coastline. While it's not a traditional Algarve town (but rather a modern, purpose-built resort), it's a fabulous place to make the most of the sunshine, enjoy wonderful food at a wide variety of restaurants, potter the shops and bars, or simply amble around the marina marvelling at the luxury yachts bobbing about on the water.

8 DAY CYCLE TOUR

DAY 3 Tavira to Olhão: 19 miles (31km). Today’s ride continues west, passing through unspoilt coastal countryside and quaint fishing villages. Your destination is Olhão, still the hub of the fishing industry with a charming old town, renowned for its Moorish style architecture and North-African style. The waterfront is buzzing with activity - you can watch the fishermen hauling in what could be your dinner at one of the town's popular fish restaurants. This is a great place to sample the fruits of the sea at local prices, washed down with a glass of Vino Verde (the famous Portuguese young wine)!

DAY 5 Vilamoura to Praia da Rocha: 34 miles (55km). Waking up feeling refreshed amidst the luxury of Vilamoura, you'll enjoy a slightly longer ride today. The route takes you through the popular resort of Albufeira (tourists love it, so if you like a bit of bustle, you might enjoy a drinks break here), before heading slightly inland and through the traditional old town of Lagoa. From here it's on to Portimão and Praia da Rocha, via lots of enticing places to stop and sample grilled sardines and Pastel de Nata (traditional Portuguese custard tarts). After your efforts in the saddle you'll be rewarded with a fantastic beach to laze about on in Praia da Rocha, sandwiched between high sandstone cliffs and the sparkling crystal-clear ocean.

DAY 1 Arrive at Faro. Transfer by minibus or taxi to your hotel in Vila Real de Santo Antonio where you will be equipped with your bicycle. You'll have ample time to then acclimatise by pottering around Vila Real de Santo Antonio’s pleasant streets that radiate from the town square towards the lovely sandy beach. DAY 2 Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Tavira: 19 miles (31km). Your first day in the saddle starts near to the Spanish boarder and heads west towards Tavira, a charming old fishing town founded in Roman times. The route follows the beautiful coastline, with wonderful ocean views all the way. We suggest stopping at Cacela Velha, an unspoilt village of whitewashed buildings and an 18th century fort perched on a low cliff facing the estuary. The views

Another of the most attractive and historical towns in the Algarve, Lagos has a pretty centre, cobbled lanes and charming piazzas surrounded by 16th century walls. There are lots of cafés and shops along the promenade and often market stalls and artists displaying their work, so it’s worth getting here in time to explore. DAY 7 Praia da Luz to Cabo de São Vicente: 24 miles (39km) then taxi to Loulé. Your final cycling day takes you through some dramatic scenery towards the southernmost point of Europe, the spectacular Cabo de São Vicente. The nearby town of Sagres with its ancient fort is also well worth exploring. After your ride we transfer you by taxi to a quaint hotel set in a quiet square in the heart of the old market town of Loulé, near to Faro. Explore this wonderfully varied landscape, the perfectly preserved medieval villages, secluded sandy coves, orchards, olive trees, rice fields and vineyards. Along the way you'll meet local producers, and sample a tantalising array of food and drink from both the land and the sea. This area of Catalonia is a gastronomic delight - and comes with the option to add on a city stay in Girona or Barcelona.

7 DAY CYCLE TOUR DAY 1 Arrive at Girona or Barcelona. Transfer by minibus or taxi to your first hotel in the centre of Figueres, the birthplace of renowned surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Enjoy a glass of Cava during your welcome briefing before enjoying a traditional Catalan meal of locally sourced produce. DAY 2 Figueres. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. We then suggest a lovely circular route that takes you through several vineyards and olive groves on the way. Leaving Figueres, the route goes to Peralada, a beautiful medieval town in the heart of the wine area - and a lovely spot for your first wine tasting of the holiday. After this the route continues to Serra d’Altrera, with magnificent views over the plain and the Albera mountains along the way, before winding

back via Vilarnadal and Cabanes. For a bit of culture in the afternoon, we suggest a visit to Dalí's flamboyant theatre-museum, just metres from your hotel. Figueres also boasts some lovely shopping streets and a huge 18th century fortress. DAY 3 Figueres to Torroella de Montgri: 26 miles (42km). Leaving Figueres behind, today you will travel south through Alt Emporda to Baix Emporda, past the River Fluvia, before arriving at Torroella de Montgri. On your journey we suggest you stop off at the Greek and Roman ruins of 6th century Empuries - one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia. Situated right on the coast, just behind the beautiful beach of Sant Marti de Empuries, the site was only discovered in 1908, and is still being excavated. If you've worked up an appetite, we suggest a tapas lunch on the seafront at Bar Riba - and make sure you visit the 'Anxovies Soles' shop to pick up a jar of the famous anchovies produced in L’Escala. DAY 4 Torroella. Today’s circular route meanders through many pretty medieval villages with the opportunity to visit local producers on the way to learn about and sample their delights. These include the highly respected artisan olive oil producer Can Solivera. After a short tour and history of this pristine extra virgin olive oil, you can have a taste for yourself. Blending

buttery and tangy Arbequina with sweet Empeltre olives, the top quality olive oils produced here are used by some of the top restaurants in the world including El Cellar de Can Roca. If you would like a tour here, please let your guide know in advance. Back on your bike, the route back to Torroella takes you via Palau Sator and Fontclara (which means 'clear water') where you can stop at the ancient font for a cooling drink. DAY 5 Torroella de Montgri to Palamos: 23 miles (37km). Your route today passes through the rice fields of Arros de Moli de Pals, then weaves its way towards the perfectly preserved hilltop medieval town of Pals. The old quarter within the medieval walls, known as El Pedro, contains many historic buildings, including a beautiful gothic church at the centre. The real delight here is wandering around the myriad of uneven cobbled lanes which lead to the town's old castle. The views from the ancient wall to the sea are spectacular. Once you're ready to move on, we suggest cycling down to Palafrugell and calling in at the Museum de Confitura, where there are over a hundred varieties of jams and chutneys to peruse. From here you'll head out of Torrent, via a vineyard worthy of a visit called Mas Oller, which produces some excellent wines highly recommended in the Penin wine guide. 8 DAY BIKE & BOAT TO UR DAY 1 Arrive at Venice. Transfer by minibus or taxi to where you’ll board your boat and be equipped with your bicycle. DAY 2 Venice. This morning, you’re free to explore the magical city of Venice and its surrounding islands. Your tour leader is on hand to guide you should you wish, or you can simply lose yourself in the narrow streets and markets; perhaps hop on a gondola, or sip espresso as you wander around St Mark’s Square. DAY 3 Venice to Chioggia: 19 miles (30km). Today you embark on your Bike & Boat adventure, cruising gently out of Venice to the Lido, the first of two islands you’ll visit. Fashionable with the artists and aristocrats of the Belle Époque, the Lido di Venezia is home to the International Venice Film Festival. You’ll then island-hop over to Pellestrina, where you cycle towards a nature reserve, weaving through fishing villages. From here you’ll then hop back on board your barge and cruise over to Chioggia. DAY 4 Chioggia to Adria: 25 miles (40km). After a morning stroll through the bustling and colourful harbour and fish market, we suggest visiting Chioggia’s millennial clock tower - the oldest in the world - for wonderful views across the town. Back on the bike, you head south into the imposing delta of the Po and the wetlands, home to heron and flamingos. Finally you’ll reach Adria, an ancient Greek port. DAY 5 Adria to Zelo: 22 miles (35km) + 35km by bus. After a short cruise it’s time to get back in the

saddle, following the Po through farmland and little hamlets, until reaching Ferrara. This ancient city once attracted many influential architects and artists and the effects of this are still very much in evidence. At this point you’ll board a bus back to the barge in the sleepy village of Zelo on the Canal Bianco, a waterway running parallel to the Po. DAY 6 Zelo to Mantua: 31 miles (50km). Start the day with a brief ride to the village of Bergantino, where you can visit the Carousel and Street Entertainment Museum. You’ll then follow the river through Ostiglia (famous for its medieval fortress and floating mill), on to Governolo Lock. This is where the River Mincio flows into the Po, creating the largest inland basin in Italy. Cycling through magnificent scenery, you’ll reach Mantua in the afternoon. DAY 7 Mantua, round tour: 24 miles (40km). Boasting three beautiful lakes formed by the River Mincio, exquisite countryside and a vibrant town brimming with culture, Mantua is a little-visited gem. As well as the serene natural surroundings, there’s plenty to see and do - you can immerse yourself for the afternoon in the town’s operatic history, renaissance art and archaeological artefacts. DAY 8 We say “Arrivederci” before transferring you direct from Mantua to Verona by minibus or taxi.

8 DAY BIKE & BOAT TO UR DAY 1 Arrive at Munich. Transfer by minibus or taxi to Passau, where you’ll board your boat and be equipped with your bicycle. You’ll have time this afternoon to explore the charming ‘city of three rivers’ and sample its alluring Bavarian beer gardens, before re-boarding the boat in the early evening to begin our cruise through the beautiful Danube valley. DAY 2 Mauthausen to Grein: 22 miles (35km). Today you’ll cycle beside the gorgeous meadows that line the Danube. Points of interest along the way include the medieval village at Mauthausen, and the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen. There’s an alternative route through the beautiful back country of the ‘Strudengau’ which is slightly hilly but offers fantastic scenery. Grein, with its mighty castle, is your final destination today, before embarking on a blissful sunset cruise to Devin. DAY 3 Devin to Bratislava: 11-21 miles (18-34km). Leaving Devin’s castle ruins behind, today you follow the former ‘Iron Curtain’, crossing the former border and reaching the imposing Baroque Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens. From here you'll cycle through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ to Bratislava, the coronation city and former capital of Hungary. Explore the hidden alleyways of Bratislava on an optional city tour. DAY 4 Vienna. We’ve allowed a whole day to explore this amazing city. Take to the streets and explore, or opt for a city tour by bike or bus. The architecture here is incredible: the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephens Cathedral, the gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard and the State Opera House, the Burgtheater and town hall and, of course, the

colourful “Hundertwasserhaus”. Grab a bite in a classic Viennese café, or dine in style at one of the city’s many restaurants. DAY 5 Wachau/Krems to Melk: 23 miles (37km). Today’s cycling meanders through an enchanting land of dreamy towns, apricot trees, vineyards, castles, monasteries, via a forboding ruin looming above the small baroque town of Durnstein in the Wachau valley. We suggest wine-tasting in Weißenkirchen. DAY 6 Melk to Grein: 31 miles (50km). After breakfast there’s time to visit the gorgeous baroque monastery of the Benedictine brethren of Melk, before cycling into the wide valleys of the Nibelungergau, following the Danube into the city of Grein, home of Austria’s oldest city theatre. DAY 7 Obermühl to Engelhartszell: 17-26 miles (28-43km). Passing through many picturesque villages along the Danube, you’ll smell freshly grilled mackerel emanating from the riverside pubs. We suggest heading to the lookout high above the Danube Loop for a breathtaking panoramic view of the river valley. DAY 8 Sit back and relax on a final cruise back to Passau, where we say “Auf Wiedersehen” before transferring you to Munich by minibus or taxi.

DAY 2 Porto City to Pinhão by train: A relaxed start to your holiday, you’ve got time this morning to explore Porto City’s old town, its narrow streets and 12th century Sé Cathedral, with magnificent views of the Douro river. It’s then time to board the train to Pinhão, which takes you weaving through the vineyards from the mouth of the river to the narrow valley slopes of the wine region of the Douro. At Pinhão you’ll visit Quinta, an old wine farm - time for your first glass... DAY 3 Pinhão to Sabrosa: 8 miles (13km). Time to head deep into the wine country of Douro. This undulating route will test your legs on the hills - so a stop-off in the village of Provosende is a welcome rest - complete with amazing views over the hills and river. Once you’re ready to keep walking, you’ll cross the plateau, where the vineyard scenery, punctuated with charming little villages, is superb. Next, you’ll arrive in historic Sabrosa. DAY 4 Sabrosa to Alijó: 8 miles (13km). Today the route takes you across the vineyards and down the slopes to meet the river Pinhão, where an old bridge awaits. Olive trees and terraces of vines surround you as you head towards Favaios village, passing awardwinning vineyard Quinta da Pedra Alta (where, if you like, you can stop off for a wine tasting). Arriving in Favaios village, this is a great place for your next tipple, soaked up with something tasty from one of the village’s lovely old bakeries.

It can however deal with claims which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,500 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. Your request for arbitration must be received by ABTA within eighteen months of the date of return from holiday. For injury and illness claims, you can request the ABTA Mediation Procedure and we have the option to agree to mediation. Further information on the Code and ABTA’s assistance in resolving disputes can be found on . 4. Your Holiday Price a. We reserve the right to alter the prices of any of the holidays shown in our brochure. You will be advised of the current price of the holiday that you wish to book before your contract is confirmed. b. When you make your booking you must pay a deposit. The amount of deposit due will be confirmed at the time of booking. The balance of the price of your travel arrangements must be paid at least 10 weeks before your departure date. If the deposit and/or balance is not paid in time, we shall cancel your travel arrangements. If the balance is not paid in time we shall retain your deposit. 5. If You Change Your Booking If, after our confirmation invoice has been issued, you wish to change your travel arrangements in any way, for example your chosen departure date or accommodation, we will do our utmost to make these changes but it may not always be possible. Any request for changes to be made must be in writing from the person who made the booking . You will be asked to pay an administration charge of £25 per person and any further cost we incur in making this alteration. You should be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible. Note: Certain travel

arrangements (e.g. flights) may not be changeable after a reservation has been made and any alteration request could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements. 6. Travel Insurance It is an express condition of booking that you have adequate travel insurance and you must ensure that your insurance covers you for all the activities you undertake whilst on holiday. No liability will be accepted by BSpoke Tours for any clients travelling without adequate insurance. 7. If You Cancel Your Holiday You, or any member of your party, may cancel your travel arrangements at any time. Written notification from the person who made the booking must be received at our offices. Since we incur costs in cancelling your travel arrangements, you will have to pay cancellation charges as follows: Period before departure in which you notify us

Cancellation charge

More than 70 days Within 70 days Within 56 days Within 28 days

Deposit only 35% of holiday cost 80% of holiday cost 100% of holiday cost

Note: If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges. Note: Certain travel arrangements (e.g. flights) may not be able to be cancelled after a reservation has been made and any cancellation request could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements irrespective of when it is made. 8. If We Change or Cancel Your Holiday As we plan your holiday arrangements many months in advance we may occasionally have to make changes or cancel your booking and we reserve the right to do so at any time. Changes If we make a major change to your holiday, we will inform you as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of either accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value), or cancelling your holiday and receiving a full refund of all monies paid. In some cases we will also pay compensation (see below). These options don’t apply for minor changes. Examples of minor changes include alteration of your outward/return flights by less than 12 hours, changes to aircraft type, change of accommodation to another of the same or higher standard, changes of carriers and alterations to the tour itinerary. Please note that carriers such as airlines may be subject to change. Cancellation Very occasionally it may be necessary for us to cancel a specific departure or tour. We reserve the right to do this for any reason up to 10 weeks prior to the departure date. We will not cancel your travel arrangements less than 10 weeks before your departure date, except for reasons of force majeure or failure by you to pay the final balance. We may cancel your holiday before this date if, e.g., the minimum number of clients required for a particular travel arrangement is not reached. If your holiday is cancelled you can either have a refund of all monies paid or accept an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us, if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). Compensation If we cancel or make a major change we will pay compensation as detailed below except where the major change or cancellation arises due to reasons of force majeure. The compensation that we offer does not exclude you from claiming more if you are entitled to do so. Period before departure Amount you will receive from us in which we notify you More than 70 days More than 28 days More than 14 days Less than 14 days

nil £15 per person £25 per person £30 per person

Force Majeure We will not pay you compensation if we have to cancel or change your travel arrangements in any way because of unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control. These can include, for example, war, riot, industrial dispute, terrorist activity and its consequences, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions, epidemics and pandemics, unavoidable technical problems with transport. 9. If You Have A Complaint If you have a problem during your holiday, please inform the relevant supplier (e.g. your hotelier) or our representative immediately. If your complaint is not resolved locally, please follow this up within 28 days of your return home by writing to our Customer Services Department giving your booking reference and all other

relevant information. Please keep your letter concise and to the point. It is strongly recommended that you communicate any complaint to the supplier of the services without delay and complete a report form whilst in resort. If you fail to follow this simple procedure we will have been deprived of the opportunity to investigate and rectify your complaint whilst you were in resort and this may affect your rights under this contract. Please also see clause 3 above on ABTA. 10. Our Liability to You If the contract we have with you is not performed or is improperly performed by us or our suppliers we will pay you appropriate compensation if this has affected the enjoyment of your travel arrangements. However we will not be liable where any failure in the performance of the contract is due to: you; or a third party unconnected with the provision of the travel arrangements and where the failure is unforeseeable or unavoidable; or unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised; or an event which we or our suppliers, even with all due care, could not foresee or forestall. Our liability, except in cases involving death, injury or illness, shall be limited to a maximum of 2 times the cost of your travel arrangements. Our liability will also be limited in accordance with and/or in an identical manner to a. The contractual terms of the companies that provide the transportation for your travel arrangements. These terms are incorporated into this contract; and b. Any relevant international convention, for example the Montreal Convention in respect of travel by air, the Athens Convention in respect of travel by sea, the Berne Convention in respect of travel by rail and the Paris Convention in respect of the provision of accommodation, which limit the amount of compensation that you can claim for death, injury, delay to passengers and loss, damage and delay to luggage. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of compensation contained in these or any conventions. You can ask for copies of the transport companies’ contractual terms, or the international conventions, from our offices. Under EU law (Regulation 261/2004) you have rights in some circumstances to refunds and/or compensation from your airline in cases of denied boarding, cancellation or delay to flights. Full details of these rights will be publicised at EU airports and will also be available from airlines. However reimbursement in such cases will not automatically entitle you to a refund of your holiday cost from us. Your right to a refund and/or compensation from us is set out in clause 7. If any payments to you are due from us, any payment made to you by the airline will be deducted. NB this clause does not apply to any separate contracts that you may enter into for excursions or activities whilst on holiday. If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the service listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable). You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme. 11. Prompt Assistance in Resort If the contract we have with you is not performed or is improperly performed as a result of failures attributable to a third party unconnected with the provision of the services, or as a result of failures due to unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised, or an event which we or our suppliers, even with all due care, could not foresee or forestall, and you suffer an injury or other material loss, we will offer you such prompt assistance as is reasonable in the circumstances. 12. Passport, Visa and Immigration Requirements Your specific passport and visa requirements, and other immigration requirements are your responsibility and you should confirm these with the relevant Embassies and/ or Consulates. We do not accept any responsibility if you cannot travel because you have not complied with any passport, visa or immigration requirements. 13. Excursions Excursions or other tours that you may choose to book or pay for whilst you are on holiday are not part of your package holiday provided by us. For any excursion or other tour that you book, your contract will be with the operator of the excursion or tour and not with us. We are not responsible for the provision of the excursion or tour or for anything that happens during the course of its provision by the operator. 14. Protective Cycle Headwear The availability of protective cycle headwear can vary from destination to destination, and therefore we cannot guarantee availability. We strongly advise that those partaking in cycle activities bring their own protective headwear.
