More Brits Opting To Buy Top End Luxury Ski Holidays The wearing of ski helmets has been a controversial subject in recent years. More and more of us are wearing them, and in some countries laws have been brought in to require children to wear them. However, some skiers and boarders argue that enforcing the wearing of helmets infringes on their personal freedom and simply spoils their skiing experience; some even argue that wearing helmets encourages wearers to behave more recklessly than they would otherwise. There have been two new developments in the past month that will add to the debate, although, as is often the case, conclusions may be drawn either way. Firstly, a new study in North America has determined that, essentially, the increased wearing of helmets over the past decade has not reduced deaths on the slopes at all, but it has dramatically reduced the number of head injuries. The study summarised that if you hit your head hard and fast enough against a solid object to be killed (the commonest cause of head trauma death), it was unlikely a helmet would provide adequate protection to prevent it, but that in a slower impact it would provide sufficient cushioning. Just to stop us getting too worried about death on the slopes, the study also pointed out that more people die playing tennis or swimming each year in the US than on the ski slopes. The other news is that, rather as we got airbags after seat belts in cars, helmets are set to get ”smarter” from next winter onwards. A Swedish specialist has signed up with Burton to add a “multidirectional impact protection system”, or “MIPS”, to some Burton helmets available from this summer. The company say their system takes the current 40-year-old helmet designs into the 21st century. The risk of brain damage is reduced by mimicking the brain’s own protection system, using a “sliding low-friction layer between the head and the helmet liner.” This lessens the danger from angledimpact collisions, which they say are the most common. The technology was used in the vast majority of medal winners’ helmets at the 2010 Olympics. You can read the full story inside. Will this news end the great helmet debate? I doubt it!

People having to work harder for their holiday time... who are able to pay more to enhance the overall holiday experience are choosing to do so It seems the trend is set to continue and only expand in future years, but despite the upmarket move there remains an onus on value for that extra spend. “Although bookings for resorts like Lech and Zermatt have never been stronger – they’re largely ‘recession proof’ for us” says Ski Solutions’ Craig Burton, “… skiers and boarders still want to see good value. Some really top-end five-star hotels and luxury chalets are down because our clients feel they get better value elsewhere, even at this end of the market.”

Despite the ongoing reports of doom and gloom in the economy, one market sector is reported to be holding up well. Perhaps surprisingly, demand at the top end of the ski holiday market has never been stronger, with most operators in this sector expanding their programmes, while often cutting back in other areas. “Our tailor-made tour operating business is up 60% year-on-year with an average spend of £1350” says Craig Burton, Managing Director of specialist operator Ski Solutions (www. skisolutions.com). “These aren’t formulaic seven night packages” confirms Mr Burton. “They’re bespoke tailor-made trips using scheduled flights, private or rail transfers, and good four or five-star hotels. There are no crack-of-dawn charters.” However, at the end of last winter there were mixed signals. On the one hand one of the famous top-end chalet operators, Descent International, who had royalty on their client list, had gone under, while on the other hand, the UK’s biggest operator, Crystal, saw their ‘Crystal Finest’ (www.crystalfinest.co.uk) brand expanding. “Our customers welcome high standards of accommodation in the very best ski resorts and services we provide” said Ian Davis, Product Director of Crystal Finest. It seems that four factors are coming into play. Firstly, as many people have to work harder for their holiday time, many who are able to pay more to enhance the holiday

experience are choosing to do so. So a more luxurious package and flight experience, private transfers and quality service in resort are favoured to make sure the ski holiday really has a different feeling from the day-today travel chaos back home. Secondly, the socially acceptable side of the recession has moved on. Whereas initially after the financial crash it was seen as unacceptable to pay big bonuses and take lavish holidays, the return of big spending for those who still have plenty of disposable income is seen as more publicspirited – essentially helping to keep the economy moving. Then thirdly, there is the fact that all-inclusive holidays, which many luxury packages effectively are, do offer good value. A family of four could easily spend £2000 for a week in the Alps eating good lunches on the mountain and good dinners in resort, so by including a good breakfast, and other snacks and drinks during the day and evening, into the basic cost makes the all inclusive luxury packages a good investment. Finally, at the operator end, the luxury product is also coming down in price to some extent, to help make quality affordable to more people.

Avalanche Training Park Planned For Chamonix DAVID BLACK

ARVA parks offer anyone the chance to learn how to behave in an avalanche situation and help look for survivors. Together with La Chamoniarde, an association involved on a daily basis with mountain rescue, providing information, promoting safety and training, the park is located by the Marmottons ski lift, and is open to all free of charge. The park is equipped with the latest equipment; the “new generation” training park lets anyone of any ability hone their avalanche rescue

skills and, more generally, benefit from effective information to better understand the mountain environment. Everyone equipped with an ARVA, shovel and probe is given a unit at the start to set off up to three snow-covered markers, which they have to find. The aim is to simulate real-life conditions, and so the journey is timed to allow everyone to measure their performance. For yet more information, every Tuesday a ski patrol rescuer runs a workshop, and provides their expert advice.

Chris Schrahe Visits Denmark Ski writer Chris Schrahe (www.ski-weltweit. de) has ticked off the 33rd country in which he has skied – Denmark. Heavy snowfall in Northern Europe gave Schrahe, who has now skied at 393 separate ski areas, in countries including Lebanon, Mongolia, Belgium, Morocco, Georgia, Kosovo, China, and 25 others, the rare opportunity to ski in Denmark. “I went there because I heard on the news about the big snowstorms in Denmark, and that they’d had to get out 100-year-old snowploughs from museums in order to get through all the snow. Then I remembered that I had heard about a ski area near Roskilde, and found cheap flights to Copenhagen. Of course it was a little bit risky to book 2 weeks ahead, because the winter in Denmark is not very reliable” explained Schrahe. The ski area is only 37 minutes by train from the airport – the cost of which is included in

the Copenhagen Card, which also includes free admission to a lot of museums and attractions. “I liked the ski slopes at Roskilde a lot. It was friendly and the volunteer staff were full of enthusiasm. In fact after nearly 400 ski areas, I currently find skiing tiny places that only rarely operate more thrilling than doing the next mega resort” said Chris.

Scottish GOVERNMENT REVIVE PLANS FOR SIXTH Ski Area BEN CLATWORTHY

CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN This US resort has installed a new gondola, which was due to be completed for the start of the season, but delays left it closed until the beginning of January. Engineers at the resort near Mount Rainier found that its cable had stretched too much, and the cable had to be re-spliced. The $5.5m enclosed lift takes up to 600 passengers per hour, 762m to the resort’s summit. The resort is due to add more cabins to the lift for 2011–12. It is the first gondola to be installed at a ski resort in the Washington area.

The Scottish government’s Minister for Public Health and Sport, Shona Robison, has said that she will look again at plans to build

a ski area on Ben Wyvis, which were shelved nearly 30 years ago. In the 1970s a proposal to build a funicular railway and ski area on Ben Wyvis, located north of Inverness and one of the UK’s

highest peaks at 1046m, was examined in several studies that cost more than £250,000 at the time. At that point in time the Scottish ski industry was at its peak. However, the development

did not go ahead in part due to environmental concerns, and in part because of a lack of investment funds. The project has been revived by Lib Dem MSP Jamie Stone at a time when the Scottish Government has been highlighting the benefits to the rural economy of Scottish snowsports, and giving the goahead for major infrastructure projects, including wind farms and huge power lines in environmentally-sensitive areas. The mountain is owned by Scottish Natural Heritage, which objected to the original plans in the 1980s on environmental grounds. Public funding for the project seems unlikely in the current economic climate, but supporters are reported in local media to believe private funding might be found if the revised project got the green light.

LES 3 VALLÉES A new covered moving carpet has been installed in the French resort of Méribel-Mottaret. The new lift replaces an old draglift that used to serve the beginners slope out of the resort. Neighbouring Val Thorens installed two covered magic carpets last season in an effort to speed up the return time to the higher areas of the resort. It has also been announced that the ”St Martin Deux” chairlift will be replaced by a new six-seater lift for the 2012–13 season with the old lift being installed into one of St Martin’s hamlets.

Rocks Resort Expands

Gore-Tex Capes For Homeless Employees of the leading Canadian skiwear brand Arc’teryx have spent some of their December weekends in the Arc’teryx production site, in Burnaby near Vancouver, sewing Gore-Tex capes for homeless Vancouvians. The city of Vancouver gets roughly 1200mm of annual rainfall, and hundreds of homeless have to cope with Mother Nature unprotected. Trying to find a use for Gore-Tex fabric that would otherwise end in the landfill, Arc’teryx employees developed the “Bird Nest” initiative – sewing and distributing simple hooded raincapes to homeless people in Vancouver. By the end of 2010, 560 capes were sewn and distributed through several Salvation Army Shelters in Vancouver.

Val Cenis (www.valcenis.com) in France already has a number of promotional deals targeted at women skiers and boarders, but the area has now announced plans for a special week in March when still more will be available. Already every Monday throughout the season, women visiting Val Cenis with its 125km of runs are entitled to free ski and

board hire for the day, and free access to the beginner slopes and lifts. Then from 19–26 March the resort has plans for a series of free morning and afternoon sessions at the neighbouring village of Bessans, a Nordic snowsports mecca with a small downhill ski area. These include introductory sessions in cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, biathlon, Nordic walking, and snowshoeing at night.

New Lifts For 2014 The scale of development ahead of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, is becoming increasingly apparent with the world’s leading lift manufacturer, Doppelmayr (www.doppelmayr. com), revealing that it is in the process of completing 20 new lifts in time for 2014 Games. The biggest project is for a new world-record sized ”3S” or ”tri-cable ropeway” – a kind of ultrastable, high-capacity, high-speed lift, which combines the benefits of cable cars and gondolas – a famous example includes the Peak2Peak lift at Whistler Blackcomb. The large cabins travel along two track ropes like a cable car for maximum stability, and are pulled by a haul rope, but rather than stopping and starting like a conventional cable car, there are multiple cabins moving around continuously like a gondola. The new lift, Doppelmayr’s 100th installation for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), links the main Alpine sports venue at Krasnaya Polyana to the Laura ski area, where the Nordic competitions of the 2014 Olympics will be staged.

The lift will rise 1000 vertical metres from 600 to 1600m above sea level over its 5383m length – a new world record for this lift type, and for any type of continually moving cable lift. It will take only 11.25 minutes to make the 5km+ ascent in one of the 43 30-passenger cabins, which will together be able to transport 3000 people per hour. Work is due to commence this May with completion in 2013. The value of the order by Gazprom has not been disclosed, but the company remarked it decided on the lift because of “Doppelmayr’s high professional competence and the spectacular references for 3S installations.”

New Technology Set To Improve Helmets MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System), a company based in Sweden, has signed a licence to supply their technology to Burton Snowboards, for use in some of their helmet brands. MIPS’ patented technology mimics and reinforces the brain's own protection, thereby reducing the risk of brain damage, setting a new standard in helmet safety the company say. “Helmets on the market today are based on the same technology that was developed during the 70s. They provide adequate protection, but they don't protect against brain damage caused by an angled impact to the head. MIPS reduces the risk of brain damage by mimicking the brain's own protection system, using a unique sliding low-friction layer between the head and the helmet liner” says a MIPS company statement. MIPS will initially be integrated in the Burton RED Hi-Fi helmet 2012 model, a helmet that was used by six out of seven snowboard medal winners at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and will be available in shops worldwide from August 2011.

Lake Louise Ticket Deal Lake Louise in Alberta has announced a special deal on lodging incorporating lift tickets that will be valid for the rest of its long season (except the Easter holidays) right through to May. Europe and the Dolomites just got closer thanks to collaboration between Cortina Express and Eurolines. “The new bus service is an alternative to air travel, and embraces the philosophy of ‘slow travel’, enjoy the views from the comfort of your seat and arrive in the Ampezzo valley without the usual frenzy of travelling” said a statement from the famous Italian resort. Depart from London Friday morning and arrive in Cortina Saturday evening. The route takes you through cities like Amsterdam, Brussels, Liege, Luxembourg and Paris, and after a quick change of bus at Mestre, Venice, you are off to the heart of the Dolomites. The return to London departs Saturday with arrival on Sunday. A one-way ticket is €100, and saves the traveller the stress of airport check-in, and the long waiting times associated with air travel. An unusual distraction for skiers arriving at the top of the Sunburst Express Chairlift in Sun Peaks, ready to ski their first run of the day, is a strong whiff of cinnamon buns. Those who follow their noses to the Sunburst Lodge at the Canadian resort, are rewarded by one of the 250–300 cinnamon buns baked high on the mountain each morning. “The elevation at Sunburst (1849m) means the cinnamon buns baked up there are twice as big and extra fluffy, so it’s often a first stop for skiers and snowboarders when they head up the mountain in the morning” explains Bobbe Lyall, Food and Beverage Manager for the British Columbian resort.

Les Gets: New Bordercross Les Gets has a new boardercross course dedicated to the resort’s Olympic champion Déborah Anthonioz (Silver medallist at Vancouver Winter Games 2010). 400m Snowflake Created For New Ski Resort The entrance to a new indoor winter sports centre in Lithuania has been decorated with a huge snowflake formed from more than 400 mountain pine trees, with a diameter of almost 400m. The complex, due to open in April 2011, will boast both outdoor ski runs and one of the world’s five biggest indoor runs. The idea came to Andrius Stasiukynas, the General Director of the construction company Stamita employed in the building of the complex. “We decided that the downhill should be given some winter accent which would remain there even during the hottest summer” said Mr Stasiukynas. “Later, on its other side, facing Druskininkai, we will create the logo of the centre – a skier, using the same trees. We didn’t want to use any environment unfriendly materials” he added. Curious travellers now stop to see not only the rapidly emerging ski hall, but the impressive massive green snowflake as well.

Chalet companies across the Alps are braced for a boost in chalet girl applications for next season. It has been rumoured that the number of gap year staff will fall in the coming year due to higher university fees, but for those still in the market for a year out, or those ditching university altogether, the attraction of the Alps might just be what they need. The Managing Director of Ski St Martin (www. skistmartin.com) told InTheSnow “Every season there is a great demand for jobs as chalet girls, but it is often apparent that the kind of people who look for the work are not that dedicated to the job, and are more interested in the après-ski, not our clients. That just isn’t what we look for and often have to search harder for the very best.” The film is set in the upmarket resort of St Anton, however large parts of it were shot in GarmischPartenkirchen, Germany. As any winter sports fan knows, mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable and caused a great deal of problems. Director Phil Traill said “One thing out here is no-one can predict the weather, which is very frustrating” he sighs. ”Whenever we tried to plan the following day’s filming, the Germans and Austrians would always say, ’we are in the mountains,’ which is shorthand for saying, ’we haven’t a clue what the weather will be doing.’” Many of the cast had never skied or snowboarded before production started, including lead actress Felicity Jones, who had never even put a snowboard on. She underwent a 3-week, 8 hours a day crash course in an attempt to master the sport. Co-star, and supposed seasoned ”ski bum”, Tamsin Egerton had also never skied.

“Who needs the Alps?” is the question posed by Sweden’s largest and best known ski area, Åre (pronounced ”Oh-Rey”). Well, the answer is perhaps not, if you head to Scandinavia’s most popular snowsport destination. The ski area is large by any standards – with a vertical that is also impressive for a part of the European continent not famed for its high mountains; and there are more than 40 fast lifts to get you up it. Then there’s the long season with snow guaranteed from late November well into May, when daylight hours stretch late in to the evening. Add in a pleasant historic base village, with a great variety of accommodation from value apartments up to the stylish Copperhill Mountain Lodge (www.copperhill.se); an equally eclectic mix of shopping,

The nearest airport is Östersund (85 km / 53 miles) away, from which a bus service links to the resort in about an hour long transfer. Trondheim Værnes Airport (140km / 87 miles) is the second closest, and is served by a ski bus (the ‘Skybus’) service direct to Åre on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Transfers cost 220 SEK for adults and 165 SEK for children / students each way. The bus stops at nine different locations in the Åre area and takes around two hours. Norwegian airline (Norwegian.com) run low cost flights from Edinburgh and Gatwick. Alternatively the rail station in Åre receives several trains daily from Stockholm and other cities, including Trondheim, Gothenburg and Malmö. Overnight trains include restaurants, discotheque carriages and sleeping cars. Stockholm is 600km (375 miles) from the resort, Gothenburg 900km (587miles) and Malmö 1100km (687 miles). There are also good road links between these cities and Åre.

après-ski and restaurants; lots of things to do, great facilities and friendly English-speaking locals, and you do have a winning combination. Oh and with regards to that old

criticism of Scandinavia – it’s too expensive, particularly for alcoholic drink; really this is no longer the case. The Swedish Krona has devalued dramatically against major

currencies – by around a third over recent years. Alcohol prices are in line with those of the Alps, and meals and lift tickets generally cheaper. Åre – the ski area operated by the SkiStar group (www.skistar.com), which owns most of the region’s other top ski areas, including Norway’s Hemsedal – spreads for some distance along the valley road and actually incorporates “three villages in one resort”, the main one being the original village. Each village has its own ski area, although by far the largest is that above Åre village itself. This ski area is shared with the newer purpose-built and family-friendly offshoot of Årebjörnen. Tourism began in the area in the 1880s when the railway reached the town, and that’s still a great way to arrive from Stockholm. There’s an overnight train

where you can either dance all night in the disco car, or relax in the sleeper. The funicular railway that still accesses the slopes today was opened in 1909. From the top there are spectacular views across the huge frozen lake beside the resort. Architecturally the resort is a mix of old wooden buildings and modern additions. The resort centre, around the railway station square, is especially attractive. The second largest ski area is above Duved, which is virtually linked to Åre’s skiing (but not quite!). You need to take a bus from one base to the other. Duved installed Scandinavia’s first six-seater chair-lift with a plastic hood for weather protection some years ago, it cut the previous bottomto-top ascent time from 45

minutes to just over 5 minutes! Intermediates will particularly enjoy Åre’s fast easy cruising, and the feeling of travelling along the area. Beginners have a high proportion of terrain graded very easy or easy, and the ski school guarantees you’ll have mastered the basics after five lessons, or they offer a full refund. Expert skiers have plenty of off-piste opportunities with heli-skiing available. Of course you should always take a guide, but here the avalanche risk is lower than the norm. On-piste choices include the World Cup Downhill, and the famous Hummelbranten mogul (bumps)

run. Åre was also host to the Alpine World Championships in 2007, which says a lot for the downhill skiing. In common with most Scandinavian ski centres there is excellent crosscountry skiing, with 83km of trails. Off the slopes Åre is one of the top party spots in Sweden with après-ski, or “After Ski” as it’s called locally, kicking off at 3pm. Choose between a lively bar where you pile your ski boots up in the corner, grab a beer and listen to a live band, or something a bit more relaxed, may be a good old communal singsong (you remember the days before karaoke?). In either case live

performances are usually the order of the day, with bands playing pop, rock, jazz or blues at least six nights of the week in high season. The slopeside Tott Hotell is traditionally the liveliest place when the lifts close, with the Diplomat popular later on and right through the evening. Six nightclubs continue with, often, live acts right through to the small hours. If you can’t get enough of the snow then on Wednesday nights the toboggan run is floodlit for night sledging. There’s a good choice of dining in

the village with more than 50 places to eat, including establishments selling smoked reindeer, grilled char, or baked salmon stuffed with button mushrooms in a tarragon and mussel sauce. Local specialities are fish, reindeer and moose dishes, cooked on Swedish hot stones, but international cuisine such as burgers, pizza and TexMex are also widely available, often for less than the cost in the Alps. So when you plan your next trip, don’t always think about following the flock and flying south for the winter – flying northeast can be just as good, if not better.

Team Evolution Supports Young UK Racers

With the demise of the publiclyfunded British ski racing bodies, new organisations are being established by individuals dedicated

to keeping the British ski racing scene alive at an elite level. One such is the new Team Evolution ski academy (www.teamevolution. eu), owned and run by Paul Telling, a co-founder of the Ambition Race Team

recognised by Snowsport England. Describing itself as an ”Alpine performance training group”, Team Evolution provides its young athletes with a structured, professional program, which aims to achieve the highest standards of performance within ski racing. “Being part of Team Evolution is about achieving your individual goals as an athlete, within a safe, enjoyable and competitive environment, whilst still having the support to develop fully as a person” says Yannick Green, the Commercial Program Director. Athletes are not ”selected” as such to be on the team, but they have expressed the will from an early age to be a top-class Alpine racer. As there is no full-time national team set up they

are forced to “go private.” Funded privately by sponsors and parents of the athletes, the young athletes also receive grants from their local county councils because they are national team athletes. Flexible training support options vary from a minimum 10-week period, to supporting and mentoring those athletes on full-time programs over the course of several years. The consequence of this unique set-up is that over 80% of the athletes skiing with Team Evolution for the 2010–11 season are members of national team programs, and Team Evolution currently has two athletes who are shortlisted to go to the Junior Winter Olympics in Innsbruck 2012.

New SWISS Airlines App Swiss International Air Lines has a new iPhone app that gives customers access to services that include comparing fares, flight availability, booking flights and calling up the latest arrival and departure information and much more. The app also allows users to check-in and select their seat from 23 hours before departure, with mobile boarding passes then sent through the app. The boarding pass, once delivered, can then be called up by simply shaking the iPhone. Sochi Looks To Guarantee Snow For Olympics Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said that one of the big challenges for the coming Sochi Olympics, due to start in just over 3 years, is to guarantee snow cover. “We need to settle a variety of issues, including the issue of snow. For the second year the winter here is essentially snow-free in January. And although the Olympics are held at other time period, we need to make sure that we have no problems that Vancouver faced last year” he told a press conference at Rosa Khutor ski resort, one of the newly-built Olympic venues. President Medvedev said that it was also important that development looked beyond the Olympics themselves, to ensure the legacy of the Games is as a world-class winter sports recreation complex, which attracts guests from around the world. The 2014 Winter Olympics, the 22nd Games, will be staged 7–23 February 2014 in Sochi. Alpine skiing will take place at Rosa Khutor Alpine resort, and there’ll be a freestyle skiing and snowboard park for other on-snow downhill sports disciplines.

49 The call of fresh virgin snow is hard to ignore, so more and more people are discovering the joys of the backcountry wilderness. However, the risks are higher when off-piste, especially the risk of avalanche. In the event of an avalanche burial, the greatest chance of survival is to be located and uncovered by properly equipped and prepared companions. The essential three items required for safer backcountry skiing are a shovel, a probe and a transceiver. Before you venture out of bounds, get yourself enrolled on an avalanche awareness course (in the UK or abroad) and learn to use this equipment. There has been quite a lot of media coverage of skiing and snowboarding in the last few months, as UK Sport announced in December that it was cutting all funding to both of these sports for the next 4-year period. It’s disappointing and I think UK Sport has made a mistake, but there is no point in dwelling on it. The decision is made so time to move on. Quite a lot of people have asked me if I will retire, because as it stands I simply won’t have the funds to train or compete at the highest level. The answer is quite simply no; I’m more driven now than ever to bring back the gold medal in Sochi in 2014. I love snowboarding and it is my number one passion, I get up every day for it, and I spend many long hours in the gym just to be able to do it. I have no plans to retire. I competed in my first competitive race since the Olympics last weekend in Puy St Vincent, France. It was the French Cup, which is an International Ski Federation race, and although it is a lower level competition than the World Cup, as it’s the last race before the World Championships it attracts some of the best boardercross athletes in the world, including the Olympic gold medallist – Maelle Ricker, Olympic silver medallist – Déborah Anthonioz, and several other World Cup athletes. My hope of easing back into competition steadily was soon dashed!

Due to receiving no funding since the Olympics, and the injury to my left knee, I’ve done no on-snow training, so I even surprised myself by finishing on the podium in third place beating Déborah Anthonioz, and finishing right behind Maelle Ricker who finished in second. UK Sport said the reason I didn’t get any funding for the next 4 years is because I don’t have the potential to win a podium in Sochi. In the last 2 years I’ve already won several World

Indoor Ski Centre To Open 2014

Plans to build the UK’s largest indoor snow centre are back on track, with groundwork due to start in the next few months, Godfrey Spanner, Managing Director of the company behind the SnOasis project has told the BBC. The £350m SnOasis project is now 10 years in the making so far. Mr Spanner says groundwork

will begin in March, construction in September 2011, and completion by 2014. The SnOasis project, which will incorporate a 415m-long indoor ski slope, ice rink, facilities for 14 winter sports, hotels, shops and accommodation on a former quarry, finally got the go-ahead several years ago just before the economic crash. However, Mr Spanner says the subsequent delays have been down to satisfying ecological concerns centred on rare newts in the area. ”We're scheduled for the second quarter of 2014, but at this minute I'm working with the team to see if we couldn't get the snow dome itself operating before that time” Mr Spanner told the BBC. "One of the planning conditions is that we must start the snow dome first.”

SAFETY. When your kids are going into the park for the first time it is important that they temper some of their enthusiasm for “going big” & “getting gnarly” with knowledge of safety & protocol. Always read and obey the notice about the rules and safety tips, which should be clearly posted at the entrance to any self-respecting park. Always wear appropriate safety equipment, which may include body armour (padding), and at the very least a helmet should be considered mandatory anytime you or your kids enter the park.

GETTING AIR. Once the jumps have been inspected, with a run through the park to look at the size of the jump and the landing, you are ready to go! Watch a few people hit the jump first so that you can judge the correct speed needed, so that you don’t land on the flat or knuckle (too slow), or worse overshoot the landing (too fast). You want to land in the middle of the downslope.

NEXT STEPS. Once the kids have mastered straight airs, they can start to progress to 180s, 360s, and on up to rodeo 7s and switch double corked 10s! There are also many other features in the park once their skills progress, such as rails, boxes, wall rides, half-pipes, step-ups, gap jumps, etc. Above all, have fun & stay safe!

Once you have the correct speed, approach the jump in a low, flexed, balanced position. As you leave the lip extend the legs slightly to get a small pop, & to stay balanced in the air. Keep the hands forward in front of you to ensure that you do not get in the back seat. As you come to land, extend your landing gear down smoothly, and ride nonchalantly over to your mates to receive your high-fives!

What was less traditional, although beautifully blended into the village outline with a wooden chalet design, was Le Village de Lessy, which I’d

This was one of the most unusual accommodations I had ever stayed in. The quality of the four-star development is very high – as is the norm for La Compagnie de Gestion Hôtelière (CGH), the operator which also owns and runs many other high quality residences in French ski resorts – with a pleasant spa facility and wellequipped units. But what makes distinguishes this complex is that it is made up of about a dozen buildings that have been built, not horizontally, but almost on top of each other, up a very steep hill side which, I learned, had taken over a year to excavate before construction could begin. The result is that, overall, the complex rises some 20 storeys, and to get from top to bottom involves taking half-a-dozen quick escalator rides down as you descend three or four floors in one chalet, walk a few metres indoors to the next chalet, descend the next escalator and so on – a fairly surreal experience, but quite fast and well signposted. One big upside of the design is that almost all units have great balconies and far-reaching views across the ski area – they are also all just across the road from a lift down to the slopes, whilst also being in the heart of the resort, with lots of good shops and restaurants just outside – I can highly recommend the friendly and efficient Sport 2000, where we rented out our gear, which is conveniently located a little up the hill The easy access to the slopes was a boon, and the aforementioned lift took us straight to the heart of the area, where 90km of piste divide into

more than 40 runs served by nearly 30 modern lifts. This was just right for a week at our ”advanced intermediate” standard, offering a great variety of terrain both above and below the treeline. Freestylers have an excellent terrain park, freeriders their own zone, and those looking for something a little different can even try ski biking. If that’s not enough the regional Aravis pass gives you access to a total of 210km of ski runs.

The stadium hosts Europa Cup competition next month and World Cup in 2012 – a first for a French resort, as most biathlon World Cup events are staged in Eastern Europe, Asia and Scandinavia. Another enjoyable activity, and the one that made the trip feel most special and different from others, was a visit to one of the dozens of small local Reblochon cheese farms, where three generations of family showed us how they make hundreds of cheeses, morning and evening, 365 days each year, and spoilt us with large quantities of the gorgeous stuff. In the end I still don’t know if Le Grand Bornand means ”The Big Character” or ”The Big Heart”, or even “The Big Cheese”, but it was full of all of those things and I look forward to going back before very long.

Skiers Warned Of Tree Well Risks After losing one skier and one snowboarder in separate off-piste tree well accidents during the first 10 days of 2011, officials at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana are urging those wishing to take advantage of deep powder, to familiarise themselves with risks and safety techniques related to non-avalanche-related snow immersion death (NARSID). A 29-year-old snowboarder died on 8 January, less than a week after a 16-year-old skier died after becoming trapped in a tree well in the same area. “This has been a very sad and tragic 2 weeks for all of us at Whitefish Mountain Resort,” said President and CEO Daniel Graves. A tree well is an area of deep, unconsolidated snow that forms beneath the overhanging branches of evergreen trees as the surrounding snow pack deepens. When a skier or snowboarder falls into a tree well, the loose snow packs in around and on top of them, making it

very difficult to move and/or free oneself. Further struggle can worsen the predicament. According to the industry-created website TreeWellDeepSnowSafety.com, 90% of volunteers placed into tree wells in two experiments could not rescue themselves. For this reason, the only way to effectively prevent tree well, and other NARSID deaths, is to ski within sight of a ski buddy at all times, close enough to reach them in the amount of time a person can reasonably hold their breath.

Switzerland has a fantastic reputation within the winter sport industry; to what extent does the region Graubünden capture this? GB> Yes, of course. Switzerland is so popular for winter sports, and Graubünden not only captures this but also harnesses it too. It is Switzerland’s biggest region, and in total has 2200km of ski slopes available, as well as some of the best off-piste skiing in the country. What’s more the region is situated just 90 minutes from Zurich airport, which is a gateway to the world.

What activities would you recommend for people visiting the area? GB> As I’m sure you’ll have figured out there is ample skiing and snowboarding, but why not give snowshoeing a go one afternoon, or even just head out for a winter hike in the hills? If you are on holiday with children you can always take to the slopes again in the evening for some tobogganing, or if you are more sporty why not give cross-country skiing a go?

It is obviously a great ski region, but where are the best places to head to? GB> It really depends what you are looking for. There is plenty of glitz and glamour in the region. The resort of St. Moritz is a hotspot for the rich and famous, whilst Davos Klosters is Prince Charles’ favourite
