NEW DEST INAT IONS Snowbasin Utah Sometimes described as “one of North America’s best-kept secrets,” Snowbasin hosted the Winter Olympic downhill in 2002, yet few skiers really know the resort that is located in the same state as America’s biggest, Park City, as well as known international destination ski areas like Alta, Deer Valley and Snowbird. This winter, holidays to Snowbasin are being offered by tour operator Ski Safari. Located less than an hour north of Salt Lake City, Snowbasin offers a luxury resort experience with plush ski lodges complete with chandeliers and marble cladding. Opened in 1940, it is actually one of the oldest continually operating ski resorts in the USA. However, despite its history, its lift system is one of the most modern in North America. Snowbasin’s 1,214 hectares of terrain are suited to adventure-seekers, with long groomers, powder bowls, amazing treelines, forested gullies and some challenging chutes as well as the Olympic downhill which was one of half a dozen in North America to feature in the book

Powder: The Greatest Ski Runs on the Planet. Like many of the best-known ski areas in the USA used to be, there are no hotels at the base of Snowbasin itself, meaning the slopes remain uncrowded, especially during the week. Accommodation can be found in Ogden, 30 minutes from the resort, with plenty of free parking available at the base area. Powder Mountain is also 30 minutes away and Snowbird and Alta just over an hour’s drive, making Ogden a great base to explore this area. Ogden is a modern year-round city with colourful roots and art deco architecture. In its heyday, Ogden’s Historic 25th Street, which became popular with the coming of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, was home to brothels, bootleggers and countless bars and shops. Nowadays, due to the rise in commercial air travel, the street is a lot more sedate, but its vibrant past is still palpable. Skiers booking with Ski Safari can stay at the 4★ Hilton Garden Inn, close to Historic 25th Street, which is a centrally located, award-winning hotel within walking distance of The Junction, home to many local attractions. After a day on the slopes, guests can make the most of this area, with its indoor pool, lively bars, a wide selection of restaurants and a cinema and activity centre – all within 100m². A week’s stay at the Hilton Garden Inn on a B&B basis starts from £1,255pp based on a January 2019 departure and including return flights (Heathrow to Salt Lake City with one stopover), accommodation and SUV car hire.

Most skiers are happy just to get on the slopes again each winter. Almost all of us are there just to have fun, and we’ll fit into one broad category or another. The commonest are of course holidays for families or holidays to progress a certain level of ability (beginner, intermediate or perhaps off-piste or heliskiing). Then there is the ever-growing list of options for those who want a music festival in the mountains on their trip or gourmet catering.

Borders (untamedborders.com/ski-iraq) is again offering ski touring trips to Afghanistan and Iraq this winter.

The sense of achievement of hiking up under your own steam to be greeted by epic views reaching far across the mountains, and of course the reward of that adventurous ski back down. What an amazing opportunity for your children to be able to experience with you… Technological developments in the last few years have meant ski equipment is now much lighter and safer, allowing more scaled-down children’s products to be produced and therefore making it much easier to go into the backcountry with the whole family. Lange, Rossignol, Tecnica and other brands have developed scaled-down hike and ride boots for children. With walk modes built in, it is now much easier and less tiring for your children to hike up with you. Skis have become lighter in the last few years and junior skis are no exception. Suitable wider-bodied freeride skis for children are readily available, often built off of the concepts from their award-winning adults’ ski versions. Atomic, Black Crows, Blizzard and Line are just a few of the many brands that are building impressive junior freeride ski options. And if your children get truly bitten by the off-piste touring bug, which is definitely infectious, then ski touring bindings are also an option. Lighter-weight and lower DIN release touring bindings are now readily available. Markers “Tour” frame-style bindings and their new “Alpinist” are both great lightweight options and now at more affordable prices. Giving children the rare opportunity of freedom and a sense of adventure at a young age will plant the seed for the future – it empowers them to push their limits, seek out the unknown, create their own playground and eventually to adventure into their own hidden valleys.

LONDON FESTIVAL SEES 24% JUMP IN VISITORS The London Ski Festival , formerly the Ski Show, has reported a 24% jump in visitor numbers from last year. The Show, which has been running for 45 years and was rebranded a “Festival” this year, is the only one remaining in the UK, and visitors in October remarked on the “buzz” this autumn with a greater emphasis on events, food stands and entertainments and less on the traditional exhibition hall feel. The Festival was opened by Olympic bronze medallist Billy Morgan and Love Island 2018 contestant Laura Crane with new attractions including a vintage Ferris wheel, dog sledding, ChelSki Slope and Snow+Rock’s Climbing Wall. The dates have already been set for this year’s Festival, which will take place 24–27 October 2019

ASPEN LAUNCH DUMB & DUMBER SKI HOLIDAYS A Colorado-based travel company is offering a ski holiday package themed on the cult 1994 movie Dumb

and Dumber starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd and Harry. The “Lloyd and Harry Package” from the Denver-based Curtis Hotel is fairly luxurious and comes with a price tag to match: $10,000 (around £7,780). The package’s benefits include two nights in a deluxe room, two pairs of handmade skis, a $200 (around £155) spa credit and a luxury jet to Aspen, then SUV transportation to/from Aspen Mountain and two single-day lift tickets. Things get even more D&D with a three-hour moped rental included along with a 12-pack of bottled beers from Aspen Beer Co. to enjoy on the flight home. But the pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the inclusion of one powder blue and one orange tuxedo with matching top hats.
