Reviewing superb chalets and hotels around the world’s best ski resorts for this third edition of Powder Retreats, it struck me that while all offer an exceptionally high standard of accommodation and service, what I valued the most was the peace, and the escape from the realities of everyday life.

As we battle to master the ever-greater array of communication devices, or to understand the fee structures of airlines, the chance to just say “Enough!” and escape to a wonderful place in a beautiful mountain resort becomes ever stronger.

In some ways it’s a blessing that technology has made such an impact in the mountain, with the latest apps capable of bringing us live snow reports, locating friends on the mountain we didn’t know were holidaying at the same time as ourselves, or in the worst case scenario, pinpointing our geolocation and notifying mountain rescue.

Conversely, emerging from the airport baggage scrum to be collected by a smiling and efficient chauffeur, who then whisked you to a luxurious mountain retreat for a superb meal before retiring to a private suite, and just turning off all those electronic gizmos seems to become an evermore appealing prospect. So appealing, in fact, that once ensconced in that peaceful luxury it’s sometimes hard to motivate yourself in the morning to even get out and hit the slopes!

It has, of course, been a pleasure to review the superb hotels and chalets that fill the following pages, and good to know that despite what seems to be an endless tide of worldwide economic gloom, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts are still managing to create brand new and flawless alpine escapes to add to the established list of the world’s best.

Indeed, the growing choice continues to drive standards ever higher, making establishments more innovative in what they offer as they battle to stand out. You will find some imaginative ideas in the provision of luxury services within these pages.

Of course, a little pampering is always nice to make the experience extra special, and while the grand hotels offer spectacular spas covering hundreds, sometimes thousands of m2 of floor space, even the most intimate properties offer a Jacuzzi, usually with a wonderful view and a well-trained masseur.

Wherever you end up, I hope you enjoy your Powder Retreat.

FRANCE Skiing in France has it all – classic ski areas, modern ski in/out areas, high-altitude snowsure terrain, and more than two-thirds of the world’s biggest ski regions.

Add to the mix the famous French ambience, a love of good food, and the proximity to the UK – direct from London by rail, Eurotunnel and fast French motorways, or by air – and it’s no surprise that nearly half of all ski holidays by British visitors are in French resorts. About twice as many as to the country’s nearest rival, Austria.

It hasn’t always been this way, French skiing has only really come into its own over the past few decades, as the purposebuilt resorts of the 1960s and 70s matured, expanded and interlinked. But, in many ways, that later development has been to the advantage of French skiing, with resort planners enjoying a blank canvas on which to develop state-of-the art lift systems and ski runs. Today you can even ski over the border into Andorra, Switzerland or Italy from French ski slopes.

With notable exceptions, such as pioneering Chamonix, Megève, Val d’Isère, and more recently Courchevel, luxury accommodation was harder to find than in other skiing nations in the Alps until recently too. But the introduction of a 5 category a few years ago has changed all that, combined with a recognition that ever more people wanted to stay in chalets and hotels that lived up to the grandeur of the French Alps and their spectacular ski areas.

Although the new breed of luxury properties and 5 hotels remain concentrated in a handful of famous French resorts, other villages like Méribel, Morzine and Sainte Foy are increasingly home to luxury chalets too, often British-owned and run. Beautifully converting traditional old farm buildings is most popular, rather than the modern apartments for which French skiing is infamous, however, most still employ French staff, particularly for the catering!

C halet d e la C loche Val d ’ I s è re Valley F rance Chalet de la Cloche is situated in the heart of Les Brévières, one of seven villages that make up what is often considered to be one of the greatest ski areas in the world, Espace Killy. The region combines two of the best resorts in France, Val d’Isère and Tignes, and offers an amazingly diverse range of skiing. There is something for everyone with over 300km of marked pistes. Ski lessons or guiding can be prearranged with the top instructors in the Espace Killy area.

The Ski-Base team have created a wonderful chalet described by Harpers Bazaar as a “haven of sensual indulgence”. It is one of Condé Nast Traveller’s top-ten chalets in the Alps, and was shortlisted for the Design Et Al International Hotel and Property Awards 2011. Specifically designed and built to the most exacting standards, the attention to detail is obvious, even down to the elegant and contemporary interior where all the furniture has been designed and made uniquely for the chalet. All bedrooms have a balcony, a plasma T V, a luxury bathroom with Hermès amenities, and a super king bed with a memory foam mattress.

We love the always innovative cuisine of the in-house chef, Paul Bell.

After a tough day burning up the slopes many people like to relax in the spa, with its steam room, pool and outside hot tub, or massages and beauty treatments can be arranged. The evening doesn’t end there; guests are treated to a sumptuous dinner created by the in-house chef Paul Bell. As well as Paul’s wonderful food, also included are canapés, champagne, wine and after dinner drinks from the bar.

At the end of the day one can’t fail to relax and snuggle up in the incredible 1000 count Egyptian cotton sateen bed linen and the goose down duvets, to prepare for another day on the slopes.

Les Chalets de Philippe comprises a small cluster of eight wooden chalets on a southfacing plateau, with spectacular views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding area. It is located in a quiet corner of the hamlet of Lavancher, a short drive from the centre of Chamonix.

Unlike anything else to be found in the French Alps the former shepherd's huts and famer's alpine chalets have been rescued by passionate Frenchman, Philippe, who has dedicated himself to their preservation and renovation.

His efforts extend beyond the buildings themselves, with a collection of alpine antique furniture spread through the various chalets, which is perfectly mixed with contemporary features such as flat screen TVs and Wi-Fi access throughout. There are also paintings from local alpine artists and Hermès toiletries in the unique bathrooms.

Spa services provided include two hammam, nine hot tubs, sauna and massage treatments. A chauffeur is available and cuisine is prepared in your chalet to Michelinstarred standards. The chalets also have their own cinema for private screenings.

Philippe himself is also your host and never too busy to direct you to the best ski area in the Chamonix Valley for your needs.

We love the chef’s superb meals determined by what he buys that morning from the organic market.

SWITZERLAND This is where it all began, in the summer of 1864, when a clever hotelier challenged some visiting British "grand tourists" that if they spent the winter in Switzerland they’d find it brighter and sunnier than London and it wouldn't be as cold, despite being up at about 1829m, and on top of that they might even have fun in the snow. The bet was placed by the manager of the Kulm hotel, one of the very few people who spent the season up in the little hamlet of St Moritz, and the reward was a free stay all winter. Within a few decades, St Moritz was the leading winter sports destination in the Alps, and the first electric lights in Switzerland were illuminating the Kulm, today it is one of the most famous of the resort’s 5 hotels.

Most of Switzerland’s best-known resorts would emerge in the next 60 years, and indeed the country was the dominant ski destination in the world before the other Alpine nations really got started. Famous names like Gstaad, Mürren, Grindelwald, Villars, Davos and Klosters emerged as top ski destinations, and new resorts were created in stunning locations such as Wengen, with its views of the Eiger, and Jungfrau, now a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

This was all really before downhill skiing took off, but take off it did, driven by British pioneers such as the Downhill Only Ski Club, established in 1925, whose members made use of Switzerland’s mountain railway network to get a lift up in order to ski down.

Now, nearly 150 years on, Switzerland remains the country that most people name as their favourite ski destination. The combination of magnificent scenery, often spectacular skiing, atmospheric Alpine villages, and typically excellent food and service is very difficult to beat. It may also be Europe’s most expensive ski destination by some distance, but most of its devotees feel that it’s well worth it.

There’s an immediate wow factor at The Omnia Mountain Lodge, perched as it is on a cliff in the centre of Zermatt. Zermatt is a very special resort, with Europe’s highest lifts, one of the world’s biggest lift-served verticals, and the iconic backdrop of the Matterhorn making it hard to beat.

The resort is full of top-class accommodation too, so standing out is a challenge. The answer from the Matterhorn Focus team was to design the hotel like a work of art.

This “Design and Lifestyle Hotel Garni” was created by Heinz Julen, world famous for his eye-catching creations. With its distinct lines, the architectural style follows that of the mountain railways, creating a building that is elegant, without being obtrusive, blending perfectly into the mountain environment.

The hotel is not big, with just 30 spacious double, superior-double family rooms and suites, some with freestanding bath tubs specially created for the hotel, placed to provide a view of the Matterhorn, others looking on to the resort’s car-free, but often bustling streets.

Heinz Julen was responsible for the interior design and all the rooms are furnished with furniture and works of art created by him. Nearly all the rooms have a balcony with a view of either the Matterhorn or of Zermatt.

The village remains unspoilt, and is connected by lifts to neighbouring Adelboden, and together they offer a considerable 180km ski area.

There’s only one 5 hotel in the village and it’s something special, graded in the even higher 5 Superior category.

AUSTRIA Austria is the home of Alpine skiing. The sport began in 1905 in the village of Lilienfeld, not far from Vienna, when pioneer Mathias Zdarsky (1856–1940) organised the first slalom race on the slopes of the local Muckenkogel mountain.

Around the same time the Arlberg region, and the resorts of Lech and St Anton, was establishing itself as one of the pioneering downhill ski areas, thanks to the Arlberg Ski Club and Hannes Schneider’s world-famous Arlberg Ski School, which offered expertise in the new technique, thus superseding the Norwegian telemark model.

Soon after, some of the world’s best-known ski areas developed, including St Johann, Kitzbühel, Seefeld, Saalbach-Hinterglemm (the country’s second most popular tourism destination after Vienna), and Zell am See. Today, Austria has over 600 skiing areas, more than any other country. They are not the biggest or the highest in the Alps, but for many people they are the best, and before the rise of France in the 1980s, more Brits visited Austrian ski areas than those of any other country.

And many still do. Austria’s intimate ski areas are some of the easiest to reach – many within 90 minutes, often less, of Innsbruck or Salzburg airports. There are almost no soulless purpose-built resorts here, due to strict planning laws that mean almost all resorts are comprised of traditional wooden chalet-style buildings, with none of the concrete blocks that blight some of the best-known French, Italian and Swiss resorts.

Despite having lower peaks than its neighbours, Austria also has the most glacier skiing in the world, with ten resorts to choose from opening at various points between June and September, including year-round Hintertux.

The country also boasts Europe’s only true ski city, in the shape of beautiful Innsbruck. Three-times an Olympic centre, Innsbruck boasts its own area ski pass, which includes a ski bus from your hotel to one of eight ski areas; these include day trips to the Stubai glacier (with its extensive year-round skiing) and other big-name resorts.

ITALY Italy is home to more than 300 ski areas spreading from east to west along its northern border, down through Tuscany and the Apennines to ski centres around Rome, and even on Mount Etna in Sicily. In short, it is one of the biggest and most diverse skiing nations in Europe.

Italian skiing has a long history; classic resorts such as Cortina d’Ampezzo, Madonna di Campiglio, and Selva in Val Gardena were famous in the 1930s, after the first resort had been established at Claviere on the French border. The Italians

also pioneered purpose-built ski centres with the aid of large corporations such as Fiat. Famous centres such as Sestière were created long before the French had thought of them.

There is also a diverse choice of mountain scenery, from skiing beneath Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) or the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino) from Courmayeur or Cervinia in the west of the country, to the stunningly beautiful pink granite cliffs of the Dolomites in the east, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

Today, the country is home to some of the world’s largest ski areas, the most famous being the Dolomiti Superski, which for more than 30 years has connected a dozen neighbouring valleys, offering 1200km of piste and about 450 ski lifts all on one ticket. They include the Sella Ronda circuit, which connects about 500km of piste around a central mountain, probably the world’s second largest lift-linked ski area.

But do people visit Italy for the skiing and the scenery? Well perhaps, but Italians are also famous for their love of good things and their relaxed attitude to life. Italy’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for friendly people, where eating the best cuisine and providing the best service is second nature, and not something planned out by corporate management.

Gourmet cuisine prepared by expert chefs is the norm, too. Enjoy meals made with local valley Alpine cheese, fish and meats, along with the famed Surgiva mineral water.

NORTH AMERICA AND ASIA It’s not well known outside the country, but Japan has more ski areas than almost any other. It all began around 90 years ago at the resort of Nozawa, already famous for its hot springs.

Today Nozawa Onsen boasts the largest single ski resort in Japan, with first-class facilities and the longest slopes in the country, some over 10km long and all with a beautiful view over the ancient village and its snow-capped rice fields. Many other ski resorts nearby can also be reached on a day trip, including Hakuba, Myoko Kogen and giant Shiga Kogen.

But equally famous these days is Niseko, which has seen a huge growth in international tourism over the past decade, though retaining its unique Japanese character, it is the most English-language friendly resort in the country, with a high ex-pat Australian population, and a reputation for the second-deepest powder snow in the world.

Across the Pacific, North America is home to nearly a thousand ski areas spread across Canada and the USA in almost every state and province – from the giant destination resorts of the west to more intimate ski areas in the east.

No one company sums up US skiing better than Vail Resorts, which now owns seven of the country’s top resorts, with three in California and four in Colorado including the original, Vail. Home to the great Lynsey Vonn, Vail turns 50 this winter, while its luxurious neighbour Beaver Creek will host the 2015 World Alpine Skiing Championships, again.

North of the border, Canadian skiing is famous for its great open spaces, its spectacular views and its world-class resorts – exemplified by Vancouver hosting the last Winter Olympics.

But skiing is equally famous and if anything more popular on the eastern side of the country; individual resorts can receive more than two million guests annually, and classic centres like Le Massif (above the mighty St Lawrence River in Quebec) benefit from huge investment to create state-ofthe-art facilities on and off the slopes.
