INTERNATIONAL HOUSE
2015 ANNUAL REPORT
50 Years of Enabling Youth S
ince 1965 International House (IH) has been at the forefront of developing leaders that have a real impact on the every day lives of others. International and Australian residents become well rounded global citizens by living in an environment that exposes them to crosscultural relations, volunteering, leadership opportunities and stimulates them in their chosen career path. In 2015, the IH community celebrated the accomplishment of doing all of this for over 5500 current residents and alumni. Since it was established in 1965, as a Rotary International Golden Anniversary Project it has annually provided accommodation and a rich learning experience for 200 undergraduate residents and 40 postgraduate residents within its 11 unique pagoda styled towers. IH’s residents, alumni and friends continue to support the IH Vision of creating ‘A global community of connected, capable and compassionate young leaders.’ 2015 was a remarkable year as we celebrated both the past and the future as a community in our Golden Anniversary Year.

Foreword
W
elcome to the International House (IH) Annual Report for 2015. I am very pleased to share with you what an outstanding Golden Anniversary year that International House has had in 2015. We as a community should be proud that enabling the next generation of leaders and connecting our alumni continues to be a priority of the IH community. This is demonstrated by the incredible programs that were run, GPAs that were received and generosity displayed by donors in 2015 which celebrate and encourage excellence in our community. Thanks to your support we achieved many great things in 2015 including to progress major refurbishments to rooms and hallways dating back to 1965 in A, G, B and C Towers, painting the exterior of towers and progressing plans for the future. We look forward to continuing to create the best living and learning environment that we can for our residents to develop and grow with your support in 2016. Thank you to the Board of Management (BOM) the voluntary group that drive the strategic direction of the College and particular thanks goes to Dr John Morrison who stepped down as President at the Farewell Bara Khana for Past BOM President Dr John April AGM after joining the IH community in 2006. We know that he and his wonderful Morrison (2009-15) with IH Resident Leaders and Dr wife Jan will continue to stay engaged with this community. Carla Tromans.
International House Foundation Board Ltd Chair - Peta Irvine
2015
was nothing short of an extraordinary year for IH. The Foundation’s focus was on bringing back many IH alumni to the 50th Anniversary Celebrations and providing opportunities for them to connect and engage with the IH community. This was achieved through publishing the next edition of the IH history book ‘Fifty Years of Friendship’, hosting reunions around the globe and connecting online through e-Newsletters, social media and story telling via the website. The Foundation Board’s overarching goal was to continue to support the activities of IH, enhance alumni engagement and through targeted fundraising provide additional scholarships and leadership opportunities for current residents and alumni in our community. Thanks to your generosity of spirit, time and giving we have been able to achieve all of those things. A special thanks goes to the residents, Alumni, BOM, Foundation Board and the staff of IH who made our 50th year a success. We look forward to continuing to have an enriching experience with you in 2016.

Director’s Report IH Director Dr Carla Tromans Reflecting on an incredible year
T
he community at International House (IH) never ceases to amaze me. In 2015 I was once again proud to be the Director of the College. As a College our residents overall cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) was 5.2. For many this was achieved whilst holding leadership positions, participating in over nine sports and giving back to the cultural life of the community.
O
ur 50th Anniversary Year was an exceptional year to be the IH Director. This celebratory year included the completion of our second book “Fifty Years of Friendship”, a wonderful weekend of debating, rekindling memories from our mini Soirée, dancing at the IH Gala Ball and to reminiscing at the Brotherhood Brunch. Our festivities were concluded with our Peace and Understanding Lecture. We so appreciated the renewed alumni contact and engagement from so many during that year, all assisted by the support of our IH BOM Members, IH Foundation Directors, staff and our 2015 Residents. A very special thank you to Laura Stokes, Advancement Director for the college, who made all possible. 2016 will be a year for consolidation and enhancement of our existing programs and projects. I commend this Annual Report to you and hope you receive pleasure in reading its contents and I look forward to having you all as part of our IH Community.

Project managed by our Operations Manager Graham Morgan-Kleinman A, B, C and some of G tower have had rooms fully refurbished during the Christmas holidays. Our Deputy Director Yohan Nair continues to have a busy marketing schedule and visits schools and expos around the country to spread The IH Way.

0% of IH’s income comes from the fees paid by residents. However, the Board of Management and our incredible Accountant Jill Charlton do everything in their power to keep the level of fees affordable for residents. Just as IH exists because of the generosity of people in the past like Rotary International and Bert Martin, today we continue to rely on philanthropic support to sustain additional opportunities and initiatives like leadership programs, scholarships and room upgrades. In 2015 we continued to offer the Annual Appeal and the tax benefits that come with giving, but also, the altruistic enjoyment that comes from making a difference. Thank you to all of those who made a contribution, whether small or large to the Foundation, every dollar goes to its intended location and impacts the future generations of the College. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, residents, external friends and our Alumni, whose ongoing dedication, commitment and expertise have made 2015 a year not to be forgotten. I look forward to seeing you all in 2016.
Dr Carla Tromans IH Director
At IH we have put in place a strong strategic plan to refurbish our facilities, provide more scholarships and increase our focus on marketing and branding IH as an incredible option

key priority for IH in its 50th year was recording, showcasing and celebrating the community’s 50 years. This was achieved in a number of ways including publishing “Fifty Years of Friendship - A History of International House 19652015”, recording and showcasing IH Couples and IH Families and through hosting alumni events around the world. We also continued in our pursuit to recognise and celebrate members of our community who have given sustained and ongoing support to the community by inducting them as Fellows. This year we inducted four new Fellows the organisation Rotary International, Graeme Baguley (1971-77), Dr David Watson (1966-67) and Mrs Helen Whitehead (née Batten) (1976-81). “IH has always played an integral role in my life. It is where I figured out who I was and wanted to become and where I met some of my best friends for life. I was honoured and humbled to be welcomed into the IH Fellow community.” Graeme Baguley (1971-77) pictured right with his brother David Baguley (1966-68).

F
rom humble beginnings in 2012, IH’s Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp (IYLC) has grown to be one of our most celebrated leadership development opportunities. In 2015 the camp provided a record 33 Indigenous high school students (Mentees), who aspire to attend university, the opportunity to experience life in a cross-cultural community by living at IH for four days with IH residents (Mentors). The camp supports and enables the Mentees to build confidence and develop both personally and professionally. Since 2012, 88 Mentees and 80 International and Australian IH residents have participated in IYLC. 98% of Mentees who attended the camp in 2015 said that they were now eager to consider pursing tertiary education and 100% said they would love to come back to IYLC in 2016. IYLC happens thanks to the financial and in-kind support of many including IH, IH Foundation, IH Staff, IH Residents, Arrow Energy - Brighter Futures, IH Donors, Rotarians and the Compass Group. In 2016 as IYLC enters its fifth year we are excited to welcome the first IYLC Mentee Alumnus TaylaJade Graham (pictured above right) to join IH as a resident and Taylah Cartmel IH and IYLC Mentor Alumnus (2014-15) as the IYLC Coordinator in 2016.

IH and Alumni Awards
Peace & Understanding Lecture
IH’s Alumnus Steven Skala (1975) received the Colleges’ UQ Alumni Award on 10 October 2015 for “outstanding contribution to UQ and a residential college and continued to make a positive impact on the wider community, nationally and internationally”. This is the second year that IH has won this award and we were excited and honoured to be able to share Steven’s story. Steven has forged an impressive legacy in many sectors. He is currrently the Vice Chairman of Deutsche Bank AG (Australia and New Zealand) and he holds non-executive directorship positions in many influential private and public companies including Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Wilson Group Limited, BlueChilli Technology Pty Ltd and Member of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art (New York). He is passionate about supporting and influencing education, the arts, medical and policy research, entrepreneurs and business, he ensures that important voices are being heard at all levels. During his time at IH he is remembered as being a revered unspoken captain of the IH cricket team and the individual who drove robust conversations around the dinner table.
Thanks to the support of one of our resident leaders Michael Naess we were able to close our 50th Anniversary with one of our most extraordinary Peace & Understanding Lecturers to date, Eddie Jaku OAM. To a full house, Eddie left the audience silenced and lost for words by his extraordinary journey as one of the oldest surviving Holocaust victims. Despite his time spent in horrific circumstances at Auschwitz Concentration Camp, his message to the world is this: hating each other won’t solve any of the world’s issues. We have to work together as one to build a better, brighter, more tolerant world for the future. In the word’s of Martin Luther King Jr, “Hate can not drive out hate, only light can do that.” Hearing from Eddie was the most remarkable way to finish our 50th Anniversary and we were so honoured that our residents and friends could hear his incredible story.

Indigenous Success M
aking sure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people have access to the best education and opportunities for their future is not only a priority area for the International House Foundation Ltd but also for Alumni and Friends of the College who give generously year after year to programs and initiatives such as the Indigneous Scholarship and IYLC. In 2015 for the first time IH was able to support a post-graduate resident through the IH Indigenous Scholarship and in 2016 two residents will have access to the scholarship. Thank you to all those who continue to support such a worthwhile giving location and give amazing individuals like Pirpantji and Tayla-Jayde the chance to chase their dreams and experience IH life.

eing a recipient of the Indigenous Scholarship has been a highly valuable form of assistance that has provided more than greater financial security during a period that all in academia accept as being challenging. The Doctor of Medicine program at the University of Queensland is highly demanding and being so far from home is difficult.
I
am continually reminded of the blessing that membership to the welcoming and diverse community of International House has been. Being a Pitjantjatjara man whose Father’s family is from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjara (APY) Lands; and a Mother born in a quaint English village of Redruth in the south west of the UK, with a taste of red earth and desert skylines of the Musgrove Ranges. I am no stranger to diversity and as a result I have always had an active interest in cultural diversity.
I
am grateful that International House is enabling me to achieve in my medical studies by providing an environment that is filled with warmth and allowing me to focus on my program. Subsequently, I will be completing an end of year medical student placement with the Paediatric Ward of the Alice Springs Hospital and I am extremely excited at the prospect of working in a region very dear to my heart. I look forward to continuing to pursue my studies whilst living at IH in 2016.

IYLC SUCCESS Tayla-Jayde Graham
M
y first experience at IH was through attending IYLC in 2015. As soon as I arrived I felt welcomed and knew that this was where I wanted to live whilst I studied at the University of Queensland (UQ). IYLC was such an amazing week I made friends for life with the Mentees and Mentors and left feeling like a Housie. It made me determined to study harder in Grade 12 and it paid off when I was accepted to study a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sociology at UQ. Since starting as a Fresher IH has quickly become my second home. I can’t wait to immerse myself in College life, be a Mentor at IYLC in 2016. I look forward to sharing my journey from Mentee to Housie with other young people to inspire them to pursue their dreams and chase their passions. Thank you to all those for their support.

Tower Renovations
I
n our 50th year it became more and more apparent to the BOM that many of our 50 year old rooms built in 1965 needed attention. Thanks to the generous support of many who have given to the IH Priority Fund over the years the IH Foundation Ltd has been able to support IH to upgrade 42 rooms across B, C, and G Towers. The rooms which still had original bed frames and desks from the 1960’s have been fitted with new desks, beds, mattresses, chairs, paint, carpet
and curtains giving residents a fresh and vibrant space to study and live. None of this would have been possible without your support. It is IH and the BOM’s intention that over the coming years, through the support of our community we will be able to continue significant refurbishments on the 50 year old buildings. We look forward to having you walk this journey with us and the opportunity to show the refurbishments to you.

International House, Brisbane, Tuesday June 30, 2015
ongratulations, Anne. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to give a young person an opportunity to live and learn at International House (IH). By donating to IH you support our vision to provide students of diverse cultures and backgrounds with the opportunity to live at IH regardless of their financial means. The Financial Hardship Scholarship allows IH to support a deserving resident with part of full fee discounts to IH. During their time at IH they will have the opportunity to experience personal and professional leadership opportunities through IH Student Club Executive, Senior Resident roles, General Committee and The Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp (IYLC) Mentorship positions. Without support from people like you some young people would miss out on the chance to experience the IH Way of Life and a high quality tertiary education. Thank you.

From day onethrough to present day I have have felt supported, loved and welcomed. IH has been a fantastic experience or me because of the unique community that thrives within its walls. The people and cultural barriers here are in a league of their own. I have developed and grown as a leader, a learner and a human being at IH and would love for all people to have the experience I have had here.” Madeline Reynolds, (IH resident 2013-15. Capturing our Alumni stories
H now has over 5500 Alumni spread globally. 2015 was the perfect time to celebrate these individuals and reconnect with them. In 2015 IH began capturing these unique stories through new initiatives such as; 50 IH Champions, 52 Couples of IH, IH Families, Celebrating our Alumni list, the IH timeline and Presidents of IH Student Club. All of their special stories and accomplishments are now housed on our website for Alumni to remember and enjoy. We loved that in 2015 we heard story after story of mass Housie Reunions and weddings in cities around the world as the friendships formed at IH continue to be the most important in many of our communities lives.

60 Years of Rotary International Support
he concept of IH Brisbane was brought to the Rotary Club of Brisbane West in 1955 by Frank White. It was Rotarian Bert Martin who championed the College into existence over the next 10 years rallying community support, fundraising and building a case for support for a College that welcomes anyone regardless of their religious and/or cultural background to live and learn together. In 1965, IH opened its doors to 62 men and 50 years later the College continues to thrive and stay strongly connected to the Rotary community. It was an honour in 2015 to celebrate this unique partnership through numerous events including The Rotary Club of Toowong’s 50th Anniversary, Club visits and Club’s ongoing support to the Sir Clem Renouf Building Fund.
