HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY INTERNATIONAL HOUSE!
MY SEMESTER 1 EXPERIENCE It felt like yesterday that I have arrived at IH as a fresher and now today it is almost the end of Semester 1. But in reality, so much has happened between them. I still remember the great times I had during the O-week and some funny moments in it as well. For example, that time when I was carrying around all those random newspapers I found on the street during the Treasure Hunt in the city after being told that it was part of the activity. Then I saw Crispy and asked him whether I have to keep carrying those heavy newspapers around or throw them away. He told me to just keep carrying them around but later I found out he was just messing with me and I never actually needed those newspapers in the first place(Thanks Crispy…) Also I remember that night in Brotherhood when I was supposed to go through this very confusing obstacle course (it was pretty dark too) and being shouted at by Taylah as I keep messing up the obstacle course. She was like “Hey fresher, what are you doing?” and I was pretty scared that time to be honest as I thought she would make me repeat the whole obstacle course that time. But luckily, I found out my errors and make it through to next stage before she yelled at me again! Also, how can I forget about the games room in IH? Some would say that is where I spent most of my time in IH but I think that’s pretty arguable. Almost every night at 9.30pm in IH, I can hear this shop call “SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP OOOOOOOOOOO – PPPPPPEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNN!” all the way up from my 5th floor. I actually have no idea how the Shop Kings can shout that loud for so long to be honest. Do they practice doing it during the semester breaks or something? I like going to the shop when it is open to get the awesome garlic bread that they have(ask Harry how often I get garlic bread from them!). I usually only plan to spend about 10 minutes in the games room but in reality I ended up spending over an hour playing table tennis with people there…I found a new passion for table tennis in IH(really it is true). First, I thought I would just try that game as I have never really played it before but now I play it a lot. The best joy in playing it are those moments when I beat Jas, Venky ,Ani with a broken table tennis pad.
Playing chess for IH was one of the highlights of the semester for me. I am very happy that we reached the quarterfinals of the competition. One of my favorite games was that chess game against Emmanuel at their home ground. I was very delighted to get a draw (somehow) in that game after I thought there was no way out for me to avoid a loss. It was one of those games where the draw felt almost like a win!(although a win would have sent me over the moon!)
It was also great fun watching football (or soccer as some would say…) matches here in IH in F-common room. I think me and the other Man Utd supporters have developed some healthy rivalries with Alex who supports Liverpool, Lenny(the non-magician one), who supports Chelsea and Luvesh, who supports Arsenal. I hope your teams strengthen well during the summer break so we can continue to have good games between us. Also, Louis likes to come watch the games with us sometimes but I’m still not sure which team he actually supports (some says he just supports whichever teams that wins…) So what’s the plan next semester for me? Well, I’m excited to be part of the O week committee for O week 2.0! (check out its calendar in this Jen issue!)Also,I will be continuing to take photos and publish Jen regularly(did you notice I said regularly, not monthly this time?) and finish off the year with the Kanyana!
I am also keen to be involved in more sports and cultural events in Semester 2 as it would be my last semester as IH. I hope to try out for DanceFest for IH. I just hope Jakob and Ciara won’t kick me out of the crew for my terrible dancing skills(I’ll try my best though, but yeah bear in mind even the Fresher Dance was hard for me).
So the last issue of Jen for Semester 1 is here! I’m kind of sad there’s no Jen in July(actually I’m just JK, I’m keen for the break) I am very happy that I managed to somehow get 3 Jen issues out this semester which was actually my target goal for semester one when I got elected in this position. I would like to thank my J&K committee team as I would not be able to do this without them. Special shout out to Katie, who took so many amazing photos to capture the memorable events of IH and worked tirelessly getting quotes for Humans of IH(I’ll try to keep Humans of IH going for you in Semester 2). Also a special shout out to our amazing designer Gabby Mendoza who has spent a lot of time coming up with the great designs for Jen and put everything in layout to make it look pretty! I am looking forward to creating IH’s 50 th anniversary Kanyana with him at the end of this year! Good luck in your exams everyone! Or assignments for those lucky bunch who don’t have any final exams at all(Looking at you John and Alison!) See you next semester!

MAD HATTERS 2015
The 31st of May marked IH’s annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party event – an amazing afternoon of eating and entertainment all themed in Alice in Wonderland. Over 160 people converged on I-Plaza and G Lawn for the relaxing event which included the most delicious array of cupcakes, slices, biscuits sandwiches and brilliant drinks like bubble tea, hot tea and soda. Entertaining acts such as dancing, singing and musical performances and DJ were performed by some of our incredibly talented Housies and games such as giant chess, badminton and lawn bowls were down on I-Plaza. Mad Hatter’s once again had a shisha tent, photo booth and face painting as well as tonnes of blankets, cushions and bean bags for people to sit, relax and just take a breather from the stresses of uni life. The amazing afternoon was only possible thanks to the brilliant efforts of all the Housies who volunteered their time despite this end of the semester being so hectic with studies. Thanks so much for making Mad Hatter’s such a wonderful afternoon, it truly made me feel proud to be a Housie and to be part of such an amazing, caring community. A massive thanks much also go to all the convenor of the event: Sophie whose baking and food organisation skills are unparalleled, Van the master convenor of drinks, Katie who painted and made the most beautiful decorations imaginable, Inah for brilliantly organising, preparing (and performing!) the incredible entertainment of the day and Gabby whose poster and ticket design looked amazing! Thanks so much for being such a brilliant and fun team to work with, I am so grateful for all the work you all put into making the event a success! Next year I hope this event can be bigger and better than ever! Best of luck to the future convenors, this is an incredibly fun event to organise so I hope others can enjoy planning it as much as I did! Thanks to everyone who came and make Mad Hatters the amazing afternoon that it was!

CHORALFEST 2015
Choralfest was by far the biggest cultural highlight of this semester. The effort everyone put in to making us sound acca-amazing (I had to) was remarkable and it’s definitely an experience I would love to have again. The songs our Housie singers learnt over the semester were the infamous “Pompeii” by Bastille, Say Something by AGBW and Baba Yetu from Civilisation IV which was performed entirely in Swahili. I’m not going to go over how much fun everyone had because you can see all that in my previous post on the Housies page but I cannot stress enough how thankful both Ciara and I are for everyone’s efforts. Thanks to the beautiful supporters who came to watch on the night as well!

FOOD CORNER
We had a quick interview with Gary, the head of kitchen staff at IH to talk all about food here in the college. Daily life as an IH chef I start at 6:00am in the kitchen here at IH and usually finish at around 3pm in the afternoon. Egon (The one who yodels) usually is in charge of kitchen for the dinner but some days I stay back till after dinner. I cycle to IH everyday from my home. The kitchen makes orders for food on Mondays and Thursdays. There are around 15 staff altogether in the kitchen. Plans for next semester’s menu Doughnuts will be making a re-appearance in the kitchen again next semester! Fried rice for breakfast will also be coming every few weeks starting next semester. Expect to see more hearty food such as stews and dumplings as well! Winter food is coming! Suggestions from Housies We value your feedback about the kitchen. Feel free to put in reasonable suggestions to give your opinion on the food here at IH. We will be doing an end of semester food survey as well so keep and eye on them. In the mean time, keep posting your suggestions and feedback on our food convenor, Van’s online survey and our IH Kitchen Feedback page on Facebook as well.
- Gary Food Convenor's 5 tips for healthy eating during exams: (1) Stay hydrated. Drink more water!!! (2) Eat for energy. Meeting vitamin and mineral requirements will help you do your best. (3) Don’t skip breakfast. Try to get some protein, calcium, fibre and a piece of fruit there. (4) Smart snacking and simple recipes will boost your study. (5) Eat snacks and suppers out of your desk. It helps you relief mental and physical stress, just find someone to eat and talk together with you.
Pizza Toast (7 mins) Feel like pizza but don’t want to order? For 1 serving: ● 2 slices bread (from side kitchen :P) ● 1 tbsp of tomato sauce ● 1 small tomato, sliced ● basil leaves, thinly chopped ● ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese Place bread on the wire shelf and toast. Remove the toasted bread from oven and spread tomato sauce on both slices. Then top with sliced tomato and shredded cheese. Bake at 192oC for 4 minutes or until cheese is thoroughly melted.
Avocado Smoothie (6 mins) A great after work-out snack! For 1 serving: ● 1 avocado ● 1 banana ● 3 tbsp of condensed milk ● 50mL of skim milk ● 3-4 ice cubes Combine avocado and milk and blend them with a blender. Then add banana and ice cubes to thicken the mixture. #Add 1table spoon of honey for more flavor!
Chicken Curry In a Hurry Perfect supper for SWOTVAC For 2 servings (can share with someone else): ● 250gr chicken thigh, cut into 2.75cm pieces ● ½ onion, chopped ● 1 tsp of grated ginger ● 1½ or 2 tbsp of curry paste (I usually buy Madras curry) ● 1 small tomato, sliced ● 200mL of milk ● Corianders, chopped ● Some salt from side-kitchen Heat the pan in medium heat, fry the onion then add the chicken and tomato, stirring for 7 minutes or chicken turns into brown. Add the curry paste in, then grated ginger and stir in the milk. Cook for 6 more minutes, season and stir through chopped corianders. Enjoy with rice or bread! #Replace milk with coconut milk as it tastes much better! #Try adding butter when frying onion Keep calm, revise, carry on eating and have enough sleep. Good luck with your exams :D

SPORTS ROUND UP Touch Football: Male: The boys played a tough competition against some of Queensland’s best touch players; we scored a record 6 tries throughout the competition but unfortunately finished 7th. Female: The women of IH took to the field with aggression and passion, they scored one lonely try and finished 8th.
Hockey: This year the girls became one of the most successful field hockey teams in recent history after demolishing Cromwell in an overwhelming victory. They ended up taking 7 th place.
- Sports Lad
Water Polo: Male: The lads took to the pool in water polo led by their captain Jeremy. Leading from the front in impressive style, Jeremy took the boys to a very close draw (we actually won) against EMC. They finished the season strong by easily beating St Leos to finish 5th. Female: The girls started their water polo campaign strong with a hard fought draw against grace. They finished the competition in 8th place.
Cricket: Cricket is one of the most rewarding sports that can be played at IH. All the boys that got involved loved spending large amounts of time on the field. Special mentions go to Captain Jack, Kazuki (most home runs), Peter (leading wicket taker) and Leonard Yong Jin Park (Most Intimidating Walk Out). We finished 7 th
Volleyball: For the second year in a row the IH girls were crowned champions of ICC volleyball. The girls suffered through injury and fatigue to bring the trophy home and we all love them for it. Big shout out to the entire team and coaches for putting so much time and dedication into training and matches.
SOIRÉE
You probably have heard about it, tasted our yummy food at Sunday Supper, or helped paint some lanterns at Tabiat Selasa. But yet we can’t emphasise enough about the spirit of Soirée. Soirée epitomises the spirit of International House; it is run by our residents and showcases the diverse cultural backgrounds of our students. Every year, it is very heart-warming to see the whole IH community volunteer their time and come together to make Soirée a success. This year, you can be a part of it too!! We need all the help we can get, and every single Housie gets the chance to leave their mark on Soirée. You can get involved in the preparations, the cooking, the performances, and SO MUCH MORE (yes, even if you won’t be here next semester). We have already started making decorations, and rehearsals for Can-Can Girls & Haka Boys will be starting very soon! These are the awesome people who have stepped up to join our Soirée team for 2015: Food Convenors: Danial Lee and Van Bui Beverage Convenors: Kazuki Izumi, Ian Haryono and Mukum Limbu Entertainment Convenors: George Britchford and Shubhaam Yadav Stall Convenors: Hoshimi Okita and Peggy Ching Decorations Convenor: Meg Grealy They will be finalising ideas by the end of the semester; so if you have any suggestions, feel free to shoot them a message. Do contact us if you want to know more, and we look forward to seeing all Housies getting involved in this incredible event!!

“I like how at IH it's very different. There's a protective shield at IH and everyone within it is loved. People here are like papa oso*."
“My friend and I went treeclimbing one day. She was the climber and I was the belayer. we tied a rope to her belt loop in case she fell. It was pretty funny to see."
“I went to a school of 50 people. 6 people were in my grade. Big kids were the boss. It was actually pretty cool, because when you got older you had a pack of kids following you around"
EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE
Time flies as it has been almost a year since I came to Australia. My exchange experience has been beyond my expectation. The first semester was exciting and at the same time challenging. This is my first time living in an English speaking country, so not only was it hard to keep up with classes, it was troublesome in joining conversations as well. However, people in IH supported me when I needed help and the experience here has widened my vision. The culture here such as intense partying is much different from my country (You may not believe this because of so-called party boy). The IH ball, switch party and breaking my nose were unforgettable events here. I worked for a Japanese restaurant and traveled around Australia visiting some countries (New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia) during the summer break. Again these trips could not have been better without friends I made here in IH. This semester has been great with the new amazing people. Participating in college sports and hanging out with friends has given me great pleasure and joy. I am very happy that we have succeeded in introducing parts of Japanese culture through Japan night, a cross cultural night here in IH. There are some things I did for the first time (I can’t write details for some reason). The time I have to say goodbye to this country and friends is just around the corner despite my unwillingness to do so. I hate saying goodbye but I’d like to say thank you to everyone who’s made my life unforgettable.

EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE
I have learned a lot while being on exchange. Just to name a few- McFlurrys have syrup, birds are abundant, “freezing” is 60 °F or around 16 °C, and every person is very talented. I came to IH thinking it was just an accommodation for the next four months. However, the banging pots and pans on the morning of my arrival assured me that I did not sign up for a traditional dormitory. My study abroad experience has been very unique, but I owe that all to IH. IH fosters an inclusive and supportive environment. IH has provided me the opportunity to play many sports, exercise new talents, try bizarre foods, learn about different cultures, and make friendships that will last a lifetime. I will probably never encounter a community similar to IH. Each Housie contributes talent, making IH so special. IH has study buddies (Annay and Alyssa), computer geniuses (Debbie), water polo pro (Jeremy), and even the cutest couple (Inah and Daniel). It is inspiring to see the dedication that Housies have for IH. IH has been my family while abroad and I can’t wait to show fellow Housies my home in the future!
