DISCOVER THE EDGE OF THE ANCIENT DESERT

Photo: The ‘Ursus Major’ – or ‘Great Bear’ – rock formation can be found in a section of Kaokoland known as the ‘Garden Route of Namibia’ - Photo Credit: Jacques Marais

Monday, 4 September - this was finally our ‘big day’’. After months of planning and running around like headless chickens, Pete van Kets and I were finally at Serra Cafema, right up against the border between Namibia and Angola. It was here that our DUNLOP ‘Beyond The Desert Edge’ Expedition would kick off, setting us off on an adventure where we would travel from the Kunene River

- using fat-bikes and a pair of Isuzu KB 4x4 vehicles - all the way to Walvis Bay, a good 1200km of pedalling later. I’ve experienced plenty of adventures in my five or so decades, but this desert route gave me sleepless nights from time to time.

Photo: Gondwana Conservation Foundation Anti-Poaching Unit -- Photo Credit: GCF Photographer, Raquel de Castro Maia

The Gondwana team will be riding the Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, to raise funds to continue the fight against rhino poaching in South Africa. The 7-day race from 15 -21 October 2017 stretches a grueling 572km in distance with an overall ascent of 10,650 meters in and around the Garden Route near Mossel Bay, and they aim to raise R1 000 per kilometer or R572 000 for the Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF). The first stage of the race will be traversing through Gondwana Game Reserve and has been named #GondwanaGlory by the organizers.

Devon Naude and Tristan Sandwith from Table Mountain Bikers Club in Cape Town will be slogging it out for 7 days. Devon Naude manages a regional IT infrastructure company in Cape Town, he is a passionate outdoorsman and adventure seeker who has a soft spot for a challenging stage race. This will be his second Cape Pioneer Trek racing for the GCF, a cause close to his heart. Tristan Sandwith is a town planner by profession, but is much more than just a weekend warrior.

Peter Van Kets, myself and the rest of the BEYOND EXPEDITIONS Team – Peter and Graham Kirk - had a few hours in which to explore this magnificent landscape, with a late afternoon boat trip on the Cunene certainly counting as one of the highlights. Languorous crocodiles, some local Himba people farming along the river banks, giant herons hunting bream, and the rugged landscape of Angola made it a breathtaking experience. We were up bright and early on Monday morning and started pedalling. Your average old guy on a bike (that’s me) will take serious stick here, but I did notice that even our Chief Adventurer, Peter Van Kets, was taking some strain. In the Isuzu KBs with their Grand Trek tyres the going was way easier, with the Kirk brothers scouting ahead to get good video and drone footage. We caught up with them at a tiny Himba village – a smattering of low mud huts, really to spend time with some of these nearly-wild people of Africa. There was no end to the climbs and the red sand dunes on that first day. Fortunately the guide from Wilderness Safaris knew the area well, and the view over the Kunene into Angola made up for those calf cramps on the final ascent. Fortunately for PVK, it was downhill from here; I jumped into the Isuzu to let our videographer pedal with Pete for a while. As the riders bombed through a narrow valley, a herd of about 30-odd mountain zebra galloped alongside them for a while, and we also encountered several giraffe, gemsbok and multitudes of springbok along the way. At night, we camped in dry riverbeds and sat around hardwood fires listening to the surrounding thousand-mile silence. This deep in the desert, you sometimes don’t even hear an owl or a jackal as you lie in your tent and it is eerily silent, quiet enough to hear the occasional scorpion or beetle scuttling by in the darkness.

The harsh wilderness along the Skeleton Coast is certainly not child’s play, and at times a whole week could pass without you encountering another vehicle or human being. After an all-nighter navigating the highway from Cape Town to Windhoek, we tackled the monster 20-hr drive to Angola. Moer-and-gone backroads eventually brought us to Serra Cafema – one of Wilderness Safaris’ most remote and beautiful camps - and we could spend the day getting the bikes and vehicles ready for the wilderness route back south.

This was exactly our idea behind the ‘Beyond The Desert Edge’. It was not to be just another adventure or longwinded ego-crank, but would rather focus on what could be discovered here on the edge of this ancient desert. This Photo: Peter Van Kets navigating the edge of a massive is a place where horned adders lie in wait; where thousand granite outcrop, near the Cunene River Valley and Angolan border, year-old welwitchia plants slumber; where dewdrops from in northern Namibia - Photo Credit: Jacques Marais the rolling desert fog reflect an entire world; and where scorpions glow jade and aquamarine in the light of an ultra-violet torch. There are also endless landscapes and fragile eco-systems, where you or your vehicle can leave scars for decades, so one must tread lightly. And all the silence and space mean that you spend a lot of time looking inwards, to ponder where and how you fit into this timeless planet of ours. This is also partly why the support for ‘Beyond The Desert Edge’ – from sponsors such as Dunlop, Spar, Isuzu, Wilderness Safaris, Hi-Tec, Ciovita, Giant Bicycles, HoldFast, Spot-Africa and DripDrop – was so important to us. In the long run, their assistance meant we could give something back through raising funds for ‘Children in the Wilderness’, a charity organisation that helps to educate children in wilderness areas about nature. Spur/Red-E Reign Supreme on the #SwartbergShowdown to counter punch and put Team Spur/Red-E under pressure they could not force a split from the yellow jersey wearers. Despite crossing some typically technical Klein Karoo terrain, which shook off the other UCI men’s teams Spur/Red-E and NAD Pro started the final climb together. The sixth stage win of 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, for Team Spur/Red-E saw them cross the line 8 seconds ahead of NAD Pro MTB and extend their general classification lead to 1 minute and 43 seconds. The third placed team on the general classification, KMC Fruit to Go, crossed the finish line on the summit of the pass 6 minutes and 41 seconds behind the stage winners. The result sees Bram Rood and Gerben Mos slip to 17 minutes and 31 seconds down on the overall time sheets.

The Queen Stage of the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, saw the Team Spur/Red-E combination to Alan Hatherly and Matt Beers distance NAD Pro MTB in the final meters to claim a potentially decisive stage win. The sixth stage of the race, on Friday the 20th of October, featured a mammoth 2 700 metres of climbing and was won by the Team Ascendis Health duo of Robyn de Groot and Sabine Spitz in the UCI women’s competition. The Swartberg Pass is an iconic feature of the Cape Pioneer Trek and after its absence in 2016, Dryland Event Management took the decision to reinclude the grand old dame in the 2017 event. The 95 kilometre long stage might have ended on the Swarberg Pass, but the National Monument’s roads – which date back to 1886 – only accounted for 800 metres of the total elevation gain, making the stage exceptionally brutal. Once again the NAD Pro MTB team did their best to drive up the pace in the early phases of the race, but without a second equally strong general classification team

In the women’s race Team Ascendis Health made the going brutally tough for Team Spur/Valencia. By the 45 kilometre mark De Groot and Spitz had established a lead of 2 minutes and 45 seconds. It looked for all money as if Ariane Luthi and Amy-Beth McDougall would falter, allowing the pink jerseys to slip from their shoulders. After three stages of struggling to match her partner’s pace McDougall put in a race saving ride on stage 6. The Valencia rider was the dominant partner in the team on the stage and rescued Team Spur/Valencia’s Cape Pioneer Trek title hopes. Both the men’s and women’s races are far from decided however; the final stage, which takes in 1 150 metres of climbing in its 64 kilometre distance, dished up drama in last year’s edition of the Cape Pioneer Trek. The lose shale surfaces of Chandelier Game Farm provide for exhilarating mountain biking, but they can lead to serious mechanicals and spectacular implosions too. In 2016 both the Team Spur and Cape Brewing Co Elite squads lost their podium positions; after a side wall puncture for Julian Jessop, of Team Spur, and a complete draining of his energy reserves for Daniel Gathof saw both teams lose massive chunks of time. It remains all to race for then, with NAD Pro MTB and Team Ascendis Health afforded one final opportunity to topple Team Spur/Red-E and Team Spur/Valencia from the top of the men’s and women’s general classifications.

SA National Road Championships To Be Held In Oudtshoorn In 2018 The South African National Road Championships is the blue ribbon event for each cycling discipline and is held each year. At the recent Timbercity Cycle challenge in Oudtshoorn the Western Cape Cycling Association announced that the South African Road and Time Trial championships for 2018 will be taking place in Oudtshoorn from 6-11 February 2018. Finding an appropriate date for the event has been a challenge as the African Continental Championships is taking place in Rwanda from 13-20 February 2018. This also required the schedule for the championships to differ from the norm of the Elite men racing on the Sunday. The final schedule is still in progress with the possibility of the Elite men and Ladies racing on the Saturday, giving sufficient time to travel to Rwanda. Although the distances and routes have not been signed off by Cycling SA, the registration venue for the duration of the event will be in Voortrekker Road at the Recreational grounds in Oudtshoorn. The routes will be the first to be finalized, followed by the schedule of events, and only then the online entries will open for the event. As soon as each of the processes are finalized and signed off, it will be communicated via Cycling SA and Eden Cycling. The prestigious event crowns the National Champion in their chosen discipline, for their respective gender and age groups. All participants must have a Full Racing Licence issued by Cycling SA. The following categories of riders can participate in the 2018 SA Road Championships: From Elite categories, to under-23 and Junior,

right through to the Masters from 30 years to 70+, as well as Para-cycling. Each category has a chance to earn the title of SA National Champion.

Girona Gala 2017 Steps It Up! excess of €10 000 – enough to fund around 50 Qhubeka Bicycles! “It’s been a pleasure over the last two years to work with Qhubeka on such a close basis,” says Nathan. “It gives real purpose to my cycling and racing. We have such a strong community here in Girona that transcends team lines, and this is the perfect way to activate such a vibrant group around an amazing cause, that the whole peloton and industry are behind.” “I love the chance to be able to present Qhubeka to a wide audience and give fans a chance to really get involved in such a big way. We can’t wait for the 2018 event!” “I’ve always loved cycling and the fact that it crosses over so many social boundaries and constructs,” says Laura. “It is one of the few truly universal things, along with pancakes.” Photo: Girona Gala 2017 - Photo Credit: Ben Broomfield

Last year in October, the inaugural Girona Gala raised €8 000 for Qhubeka. This year, the event enjoyed even more support. While the final figures are not yet available, Girona Gala organisers Nathan Haas (who rides for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka) and Laura Fletcher (of Cassette Media) say that the funds raised are in

“Organising the gala is a wonderful chance to bring together pro road cyclists, fans, community and more to support cycling in a way that may be very different for them, but still holds the same universal joy, mobility, and laughter.” “It’s been brilliant this year to see how much the town and other businesses got behind the dinner as well, really taking over Girona. The next step? Getting a date in the diary for next year, so we can make it even better!”

Inaugural Breedenet Cape Duo Challenge - A Resounding Success The world’s first multi-discipline, multi-stage cycling event, the Cape Duo Challenge took place in the Western Cape over four days in October, with 100% of entrants saying they would like to return in 2018. An innovative concept which took stage race cycling to a new level by combing road racing and mountain biking disciplines, the event saw Team Breedenet of Charl-Pierre Esterhuyse and Robert Hobson take the overall lead to triumph on the final day at Rhebokskloof wine estate in Paarl. In the mixed event after six stages, Team Silverback of Yolande de Villiers and Marthinus Kruger took the win, while solo category honours went to Marius Nel. Riders had the best of the Boland’s beautiful spring weather, with clear skies and no heavy winds. “The only challenges riders had to overcome was to use their “roadie” leg muscles one day and mountain bike muscles the next,” said race director Ernst Viljoen. Day one of the race started on 5 October in the Slanghoek Valley at Slanghoek Wine Cellar and saw teams competing in a tag-relay race for both an on-andoff road leg. Cape Duo brand ambassador Letshego Zulu tackled the road stage leaving her Cape Duo Ride4Gugu teammate Maurice Mdolo to handle the mountain biking.

Diesel-Reynolds said the organising team and volunteers had executed their tasks brilliantly to ensure that participants had a wonderful experience. “We got all the basics right, from start times to the catering and water tables which is so important for any event. Special thanks to the three venues for preparing their grounds and facilities with such care.”

The tough Bainskloof pass was the scene for road riding on day two, and saw Team Giant of Chris Cronje and David Garrett not only take the King of the Mountain, but gain a seven-minute lead over Team Breedenet.

“The event brought massive awareness and support for Ground Level Projects and we will be making a further announcement about the financial support for this project from the race in due course.”

This meant the heat was on for Esterhuyse and Hobson to not only make up the gap but take the lead in day three, a mountain bike stage in Wellington at Schalk Burger & Sons Wine Estate, Wellington and Welvanpas. Day four dawned, another two-stage with both riders tackling road discipline followed by a single-track filled mountain bike ride with picturesque views over the mountains and wine farms of Paarl. “Both teams were under pressure and it was a close finish with Team Breedenet beating Team Giant by a margin of less than two minutes to be crowned overall winners with a winning time of 8:57:50,” Viljoen said. The final day also saw an unexpected twist in the solo category with Marius Nel beating Morne van Gruenen of EnduroHub by 0.3 seconds to be crowned Solo Champion of Champions. Yolande De Villiers, one of South Africa’s most experienced female mountain bikers, said the concept of the Cape Duo was “fantastic” and predicted the event would grow in numbers.

La Paris Bistro - New luxury eatery in the Franschhoek valley The La Paris Bistro, comprising a chic restaurant and deli, and an on-site bakery, is the newest luxury eatery in the Franschhoek valley conceptualized and developed by the owner Sebastian Rodenburg, and in-house interior architect Ashleigh Ratcliffe. La Paris Bistro is conveniently located in the Winelands, along the R301 between Franschhoek and Paarl. La Paris Estate dates back to 1699 and many of the original buildings have been meticulously restored to be incorporated into the modern estate. Their gabled facades and chalk white walls contrast the lush green gardens. Inspired by luxurious comfort and natural materials, the La Paris Bistro is an experience in modern sumptuous styling, featuring indoor palms and hanging ferns. The Bistro restaurant is set atop beautiful solid wood French Oak floors. The outdoor terrace under the estate’s towering oak trees and umbrellas, opens onto lush lawns and the estate’s expansive courtyard. BISTRO RESTAURANT Chef Nico Vorster brings years of experience in fine cuisine, at 5 star establishments and leads the kitchen of chefs. He describes his style as “elegant food, of daring flavours and familiar favorites.”

For bubbly drinkers, the bar offers an extraordinary range, from Louis Roederer Cristal to Laurent Perrier Brut and Jacquart Rose, from local Colmant Brut to French Veuve Clicquot. All are served in elegant tall-stem flutes. BISTRO DELI The Deli is a fresh produce and supply store, carrying local and imported products. The Bistro Bakery makes fresh breads for the Deli daily, and the fresh bread smell welcomes shoppers. There is also a comprehensive selection of fruits and vegetables, cheeses and meats, and biltong which can be bought in strips or sliced by Deli staff. The Deli has two walk-in wine cellars, one for red and one for white, collectively with over 70 wines, Champagnes, Dessert Wines and MCCs. Freshly-made authentic Deli Sandwiches are also available for take-away order in the Deli, along with coffee, juices, teas and cakes by the slice. BISTRO BAKERY In addition to supplying the Deli and the Bistro kitchen, The Bistro Bakery bakes delicious cakes, and offers an extensive range. From birthday cakes, to popular favorites like carrot and cheese cake, red velvet and chocolate gateau, cakes can be made to order and collected at the Deli. The Bakery moto “Life’s too short not to eat Cake” is stamped into every cake box, and after tasting the La Paris Bakery cakes, there’s little doubt about that.

Breakfast at the Bistro is served from 08:30 to 11:00, from a comprehensive menu of fruit bowls, egg dishes like full farm breakfast, omelettes and light options like the Franschhoek smoked salmon croissant with cream cheese and capers. A Farm to Table philosophy means that wholesome authentic fresh food is sourced locally and responsibly. This inspires a menu of healthy and sumptuous dishes, a real mix of light options like cured salmon, pickled cucumber, sesame slaw and rice bowls, to delicious mains like mango-ginger prawns with citrus couscous, seared beef salad with gorgonzola and peckham pears, or craft beer battered linefish and handcut chips. Lunch is available from 12:00, and guests can expect mains in the range of R80 to R130.

The Bakery claims their iced caramel sponge cake, with macadamia brittle and caramelized popcorn topping as an all-out favorite, and orders for this cake should be made days in advance. The Bakery also produces impressive wedding cakes, convenient as the La Paris Estate also hosts weddings. THE WINERY Weddings are hosted in three stunning venues: a 400 seater crystal chandeliered venue called The Lyceum, a 120 seater black and white marbled venue called The Winery complete, with historic wine tanks, and outdoor venues in the Rose Garden and the circular Arbour venue among tall tightly-clipped hedges.

The coffee menu is extensive, and includes mixed coffee drinks like caramel lattes, frappes, iced nougat coffee and a signature rose cappuccino. The La Paris Bistro truly welcomes families, and children are catered for with a special menu of meals, and with milkshakes and yummy deserts. There is also a childrens’ outdoor play area with jungle gym, slides and benches, close to where the estate horses Applejack and Freckles can be seen too. On colder days, the Bistro offers two couch corners with warming wood-burning fireplaces, rugs and coffee tables for an afternoon with coffee or early evening with red wine and platters; either cheese or charcuterie. BISTRO BAR The Bistro bar is a large 8 seater French Oak bartop, with stocked bar shelves that extend high above the bar. The bar has been stocked with wines and craft spirits that showcase local farms and distilleries. There are over 70 locally-sourced wines, craft beers on tap and the barman slings all the modern-favourite cocktails, and mixes with local craft spirits.

The Estate is a delight to explore and take in. From the white horses in their paddock, to the manicured gardens. The La Paris Bistro promises to spoil its guests, and its curated farm estate surroundings please the eye, and leave one feeling relaxed and calm. THE

WINES2WHALES

AN ACTION PACKED FNB W2W AWAITS “The FNB W2W has come a long way since the inaugural event in 2009. From humble beginnings, it’s become a bucket list event for many if not all mountain biking enthusiasts. DHL was with us from the start. Their expertise and professional approach to business has helped establish the FNB W2W as the Western Cape’s premier three day MTB Stage Race. We value their support and look forward to hosting the best FNB W2W yet.” “As official logistics partner to 100s of events across the globe, we know that great is in the detail. We are thrilled to provide our logistics expertise to the FNB W2W MTB Events as their official logistics partner,” says Megan Roper, Head of Marketing, DHL Sub-Saharan Africa. Our slogan at DHL Express is ‘Excellence, Simply Delivered’ and we aim to demonstrate this at every opportunity. Our partnership with the FNB W2W MTB Events provide a great platform for us to showcase our capabilities. We look forward to celebrating our 9th year with the riders and organizers at the FNB W2W MTB Events.” DHL’s contribution towards the success of the event includes (but is not limited to) the allocation of trucks, panel vans, drivers and fuel, for the transport of infrastructure, rider luggage, branding and race pack collection elements as well as collections and deliveries prior, during and post event. The Cape’s premier three-day mountain bike stage race, the FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike (MTB) Events, turns 9 in 2017! With stunning views, mind-blowing routes, good food, amazing company and spectacular sponsor prizes on the check list for 2017, riders are in for a treat! “BIG CATS” STILL INTRIGUED BY W2W A firm favorite of most of W2W’s riders, the Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) Boland Project has confirmed that two male leopards, Diego (Boland Male 27/BM27) and Bacardi (Boland Male 26/BM26) are still frequenting the W2W MTB routes. W2W has supported the CLT Boland Project since 2011 when the event organizers first donated five digital camera traps for research. “We are extremely grateful for the support received from the W2W over the past 7 years,” says Jeannie Hayward of the CLT Boland Project. “Although leopards are adept at traversing rough terrain and dense vegetation, they do like ‘the path of least resistance’. “Placing the camera traps on the MTB routes has proven to be extremely useful in our research. In 2016 three leopards were recorded frequenting the W2W MTB Routes: 1. Bacardi waphotographed both at Lourensford Wine Estate and Vergelegen Wine Estate. 2. Diego was photographed at Vergelegen and Paul Cluver. 3. Scott (Boland Male 12/BM12), an established, dominant male held a vast territory in the Kogelberg Biosphere.”

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH MTO Riders can ‘help make a difference’ by adopting a tree through MTO in support of the FNB W2W Crèche Educational Initiative. “MTO would like to give back to its community,” says Lawrence Polkinghorne, MTO Group CEO. “Riders can adopt a tree for R50 at race pack collection. This process will be ‘virtual’. The interface will show the ‘Knysna Plantation’ that will be divided into blocks. We’ll allocate a block to W2W. The rider can then choose a location within that block where he/she would like to plant the tree. A form will need to be completed. When saved a tree will be allocated to the rider and saved in the exact location selected.”

“The camera traps act like ‘permanent fieldworkers’, recording animal movement day and night, rain or shine,” continues Hayward. “The cameras give the Boland Project the opportunity to survey new locations within the study area, not only for leopard activity but also for the presence of other nocturnal and shy mammals like the Honey Badger, Cape Fox and Genet. Both Bacardi and Diego are still around and active in the W2W area. Hopefully once we’ve collected the latest data from the camera traps we will have new leopard pictures to share with the W2W riders.” WIN WITH SPECIALIZED One lucky rider (per event: Adventure, Ride and Race) will take home a magnificent 2018 Specialized Epic Comp Carbon mountain bike to the value of R59 000. “We pride ourselves on being involved with world class events that promote an active lifestyle, while supporting the local community and its trail builders,” says Johan Badenhorst, Marketing Manager of Specialized Bicycles Africa. “The events tick all the boxes.” “We’re excited to be giving away three “ bikes (one per event) in 2017. This year we chose the 2018 Specialized Epic Comp Carbon. Ideal for stage racing in South Africa, this model is a full carbon bike with updated geometry that features two bottle cages. It’s the perfect introduction to the world of XC riding and racing.” “The bike giveaway competition will take place on Instagram and is open to all entrants,” confirms Badenhorst. “Be sure to monitor our social media platforms. Specialized will have a spectacular display in the race village where riders can view our latest range. We look forward to catching up with all riders at the Adventure, Ride and Race.” DHL CELEBRATES 9 YEARS DHL celebrates its 9th year as the logistics partner of W2W in 2017. “We are proud to have DHL as our logistics partner for 9 years running,” says Michael Meyer, FNB W2W MTB Director.

PAGE 6

“We lost a large part of our Knysna plantation during the June fires,” continues Polkinghorne. “We would like to invest in new and exciting trails on our Garden Route plantations as part of the restoration program. The idea is to create some new single tracks that will take riders past the trees that they adopted. All proceeds raised will go towards the FNB W2W Crèche Educational Initiative. We are really happy to be able to give back to the W2W communities. At the same time we will be able to restore MTO’s Knysna Plantations, creating something special for the Knysna community and their visitors to enjoy.” FNB WINES2WHALES MTB EVENTS Starting in the Winelands of Somerset West, riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads and mountain passes, nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus! GENERAL

Hero On A Mission

To Change Lives Through Reading A few social activists have successfully cycled from Pretoria to Cape Town to promote reading in underprivileged communities. They cycled from the Union Buildings in Pretoria and arrived at the Parliament Buildings in Cape Town in early October - the aim to collect books for communities in need of libraries. Lindsay van der Byl created the Cycle 4 Change initiative in 2013 to promote and encourage a culture of reading in South Africa’s youth, and in adopting a healthy drug free lifestyle through cycling. Lindsay was driven by purpose to do the impossible in an aim to encourage young people to dream and believe. Fear and doubt played a major role in the delay of the implementation of this concept.

More than R650 000 raised for D4D On 14 and 15 October 2017, Distance For Difference (D4D) and Patch Helderberg Child Abuse Centre, presented the third bi-annual THE500, at NH The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. It turned out to be a memorable event. This was indeed the toughest THE500 to date. Twenty-three cyclists attempted to complete 500 km in 24 hours, having to climb more than 6,400 meters during the route that included visits to Stellenbosch and Kuilsriver during the day, and a number of off road laps through Lourensford Wine Estate, during the night. The very strong winds which prevailed throughout the entire event, made it especially challenging. To add to the drama, rain also started to fall during the second last 50 km lap. After careful consideration, the last lap was cancelled due to safety concerns. Only 12 of the 23 cyclists who started, managed to complete all 450km.

#Cycle4Change is primarily, a reading awareness campaign to promote the love of reading and books among the South African population, as well as on the African continent. In 2016 Lindsay set off on his first solo trip between Pretoria and Cape Town. He cycled an estimated of 1 550km from Union Buildings (Administration Capital) in Pretoria to Parliament (Legislative Capital) in Cape Town - both institutions being national key points in the Republic of South Africa. This year van der Byl was joined by other cyclists and conquered the challenge in nine days.

“We believe these books will empower and drive change in the impoverished beneficiary locations identified.

#Cycle4Change as an annual cycle aims to assist with the creation of a library or reading facility in every province of South Africa,” says Lindsay van der Byl, Founder of Cycle 4 Change. “Cycling between these two national landmarks for me is important because they connect us, which is what books can do too,” concludes Lindsay van der Byl.

New BMX Track Creates New Opportunity For Stellenbosch

Photo: Distance For Difference Support Crew

During the same 24 hours, in the cosiness of the hotel, 40 spinning bikes, their occupants, great music, wonderful support and spinning instructors at their best, provided for more drama and excitement. There was an awesome vibe, which managed to inspire the outside cyclists every time they came back to base for a quick rest and a bite to eat. Seven spinners defied the odds by completing a full 24 hours of spinning! Through this event, D4D managed to raise their biggest ever amount through a single event - at the time of print, more than R650,000 was raised. THE500 is quickly developing into a sought-after event on any spinner and cyclist’s bucket list. For more information contact Tacia Roux @ 082 415 5595 or visit www.d4dsa.co.za

Officers Deployed to Patrol Cycle Lane Between CBD & Table View

The City of Cape Town Transport and Urban Development Authority recently deployed 10 dedicated officers on motorcycles to patrol the cycle lane between the CBD and Table View as part of the Transport Enforcement Unit contingent to address safety hotspots along non-motorised transport routes. The City of Cape Town has embarked on an initiative – the first of its kind – to help safeguard the cycle lane that runs along the red MyCiTi bus lane between the CBD and the MyCiTi station in Table View. This cycle lane is very popular among cyclists, and the officers have been deployed to improve the general safety of cyclists – in particular those who prefer to cycle alone or have to use the lane after hours. “Stellenbosch is truly becoming the bicycle capital of South Africa”, said Mayor Gesie van Deventer at the launch of the new BMX (Bicycle Motocross) about the Idas Valley Sports Grounds. The new track was opened by Provincial Minister for Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais on 12 October 2017. During the past year, the greater Stellenbosch area has enjoyed growing prominence within the cycling community. At the start of this year it was announced that Stellenbosch will be hosting the first leg of the UCI Mountain Bike Championships in 2018 and the next 3 years thereafter. Stellenbosch is also the start/end point for the Cross Cape Cycle Routes, launched in May this year, encouraging tourists to explore the province by bike. During Transport Month the Stellenbosch Municipality partnered with Stellenbosch Cycle to highlight cycling as a solution on the campus and celebrated Bike to Work and School Week from 16 – 20 October 2017. The opening of the new BMX track will add yet another activity for bicycle enthusiasts. The Provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport contributed R 60 000 to the construction of the track. The construction was completed within three months. The track’s location makes it easier to maintain and also made it more cost effective to construct. It also allows for easy alterations to the track, should more or less jumps be required. Bicycle Motocross started in 1981 in the United States and gained international popularity. In 2008, it became an official Olympic Sport Code at the Beijing Games. The sport has enjoyed increasing popularity in South Africa as well, and this new track will allow for local enthusiasts to hone their skill. Mayor van Deventer said, “Our aim with this track is to encourage and stimulate the interest in BMX as a sport and provide especially our young residents with a new opportunity for sport development and excellence. We hope to see this sport code grow within our municipal area and deliver some world class participants.”

The officers are permanently deployed and work two shifts per day. They work in close collaboration with internal role-players like the Graffiti Unit, Antiland Invasion Unit, Displaced Peoples Unit, Metro Police, Social Development Department, and Traffic Service as well as external role-players like the South African Police Service and the Immigration Department. The cycle lane is patrolled on a daily basis from 05h30 until 21h30. Some of the officers are deployed in vehicles and others patrol the cycle lane on motorcycles. The officers use two-way radios and have direct access to the control room, camera response unit, and the vehicle operating centre. “Before the deployment of the officers, some members of the public complained about being targeted by opportunistic criminals along certain sections of the route, in particular in those areas which are deserted after hours,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron. To date the officers have arrested suspects for mugging, pick-pocketing and theft. They have also issued fines to motorists and motorcyclists caught using the red road (BRT lane) illegally. “The deployment of the officers along this popular cycle route will assist us in growing the number of commuter cyclists. In so doing, we are also improving the safety of cyclists and MyCiTi commuters,”said Councillor Herron.

LOUIS VISSER CLAIMS TIMBERCITY CYCLE TOUR TITLE Team Dimension Data Continental rider Louis Visser and Anriette Schoeman from Team Africa Silks won the men and women’s titles respectively at the 7th edition of the Timbercity Cycle Tour hosted by Eden Cycling on Sunday, 1 October 2017 in Oudtshoorn. In the men’s elite race Louis Visser beat Marchal Hendricks (Team Cycle4Diabetes) and David Garett (Team Giant) by one minute.

The women’s race was close with Anriette finishing only a second before Yolande de Villiers, with Fienie Barnard in third spot. The Timbercity Cycle Tour was Louis Visser’s first race since he returned from Lucca, Italy. Since the race was held in his hometown of Oudtshoorn, he was confident going into the race, as he knows the route quite well. “The race started pretty slow with the bunch staying together until we hit the 2nd climb of the day. Four of us rode away from the peloton and caught the 2-man breakaway. Three of us then attacked the group and stayed away until 10 km from the finish. I attacked and managed to stay away managing to pull out a gap of one minute and 25 seconds,” said Louis. “It was great to take the win in my home town and a privilege to share the podium space with the ladies winner Anriette Schoeman, an icon in women’s cycling in South-Africa,” he concluded. Louis’s next challenge was the Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, that took place from 15 - 21 October 2017 in the Southern Cape. He partnered with Marchal Hendricks from Team Cycle4Diabetes, who came second in the Timbercity Cycle Tour. The road race catered for every level of cyclist with a flat 30km, a slightly more challenging 57km to the Cango Caves, and a 104km stretch into Matjiesrivier at the foot of the Swartberg Mountain range.

COUNTDOWN TO CORONATION DOUBLE CENTURY The 25th Coronation Double Century team cycle event will take place on the traditional route on Saturday, 25 November 2017 when 250 teams of up to 12 riders each will cycle 202km around the Overberg towns of Swellendam, Montagu, Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale. The Coronation Double Century is a true test of endurance and skill. Pedalling in excess of 200km in the space of 10 hours is a demanding task, even for pro cyclists. Most individuals who exercise regularly can finish a 100km ride quite easily, but a 202km ride is a different story, both physically and mentally. Here are some tips to follow in the lead up to this challenging event: Don’t over-train - For both physical conditioning and mental preparation, you need to have put in the distances ahead of time, but don’t train excessively before the event as over-training can be counter-productive.

Cross train - Not all training has to happen on the bike and some cross training is good – particularly as this builds stamina and general cardiovascular fitness. So head to the gym for some weight training, or hit the road for a run. Stick to a routine - Familiarise yourself with a routine of exercise, rest and feeding – and stick to it. Don’t be tempted to try out new training methods or new foodstuffs just before race day – you won’t know how your body will react to it and you could end up in trouble. Stick to what you know and what’s worked for you in the past. Keep healthy - Keep yourself healthy and virus-free. If you are unwell before the race, check with your doctor if you can safely ride and trust that decision. If you are unable to control your heart rate rise, it is unlikely that you will be able to finish the race and trying to do so could result in a metabolic or heat-related injury. The Coronation Double Century is a Pedal Power Association event organised by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust on their behalf. For more information contact 087 820 7223

The Spur School MTB League covers 9 South African provinces and races take place from May to October each year.

The League has also since transcended South Africa to neighbouring Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho.

GARRETT & DE VILLIERS STORM TO 7WEEKSPOORT MTB

The 2017 Ladismith Cheese 7Weekspoort MTB Challenge was won by Durbanville’s David Garrett and Oudtshoorn’s Yolande de Villiers; in a race which saw the women’s champion finish just one minute and 55 seconds down on the men’s winner. The 2017 race also saw the introduction of a primary schools’ competition in the shortest 29 kilometre distance.

WILLIE SMIT, FIRST AFRICAN RIDER TO JOIN TEAM KATUSHA ALPECIN

Team KATUSHA ALPECIN announced that it has reached an agreement for the 2018 season with South African rider Willie Smit. In the elite World Championships road race in Bergen, Norway, the 24-year-old rider was the last rider to be caught after a break of more than 180 kilometers. Willie Smit is the current leader in the UCI Africa Tour. Earlier this year he won the gold medal in the African Continental Championships. Outeniqua Primary School, from George in the Southern Cape, accumulated the most points defeating cross-town rivals Glenwood House, thanks to age group victories by Alissa Coetzer and Christiaan Hatting. UCT HIT BACK TO TAKE

VARSITY MTB CHALLENGE CROWN

University of Cape Town produced an impressive showing on the final stage of the Varsity MTB Challenge at Nederberg Wine Estate in Paarl on 1 October 2017, to turn a small deficit into overall victory over arch-rivals Maties in the men’s race. Maties however remained firmly in control of the women’s race, with Frances du Toit, Nicky Giliomee and Marie Kempf retaining the title they had won in the inaugural event last year. The two-day mountain bike race, sponsored by First National Bank, saw the top varsities in the country compete in three-rider men’s and women’s teams for the honour of being crowned the top tertiary institution in South Africa. University Cycling started with Road and Track A news clip was sent to Into Cycling Newspaper by Mr David Putterill (UCT, former chairman of SA University Cycling Association), which was published in “Die Burger” on 12 May 1989, reflecting historical facts on the SA University Student Cycling of those years. In those days, the Universities had 2 events - a road cycling event and a track event. In 1988 the event was hosted by Maties, but due to the lack of funding these events faced the possibility of dying a slow death. In 1989 Sanlam came on board as a sponsor. The event took place in Bloemfontein from 7-8 July, which included 2 road races of 90km, a Team TimeTrial of 40km as well as a fund-raising event over the same distance, with teams of 8 riders that took part in this event. The purpose of Sanlam’s sponsorship was to secure two events, and thereby create awareness of university cycling. A track event also took place in Johannesburg in December 1989.

“ln my life I was focused on one dream: Photo Credit: Sean Rowe to become a WorldTour rider. I started the season with two medals in the South African Championships and a gold medal in the African Championship Road Race. I was very happy and I thought that it would open up an opportunity in professional cycling. But that didn’t happen. If professional cycling doesn’t ring at my doorbell, I had to ring it myself by travelling to Europe and showing my potential, but the dream has become real. KATUSHA ALPECIN phoned me and offered an opportunity. I don’t have any doubt. It is my dream. Now I cannot wait to start working for the team at the maximum level of cycling,” said Willie Smit. 2017 was the best season ever for Willie Smit. He has obtained 16 victories in the current season. While riding for RoadCover Cycling Team he took overall wins in the Mpumalanga Tour, the Clover Lowveld Tour and “Tour of Ethiopia”. For 3 months he raced in Spain for Club Ciclista Rías Baixas and won 6 races, including overall wins in Vuelta a Segovia and Vuelta Ciclista a León and earned 5 second places and 4 third places.

ACCOMMODATION

Orange Grove Farm is the idyllic place to relax and rejuvenate

An Awakening Beauty Nestled at the foothills of Babbedasberg which forms part of the Langeberg Mountains lies the Orange Grove Farm with the 200-year-old Manor House at its centre, creating a peaceful haven surrounded by vineyards, trees, rolling lawns and rose gardens. The beauty of the Langeberg mountains form a backdrop of stone cathedrals and rocky peaks, shaped by wind and rain over many centuries. This is a place where guests can discover the wonders of nature, the majestic rock formations, the crystal-clear waterfalls, and an abundance of fauna and flora, which provide a vast range of outdoor activities. The ambiance provides the guest the opportunity to do absolutely nothing, but inhale the beauty, and succumb to the peace, quietness and its tranquillity. History During the 1790’s the farm Orange Grove, was leased to a Messrs J.H Cloete and P.J du Plessis, and the Orange Grove Manor House, today the oldest house in the area, dates back to 1812. It was almost 50 years later that the nearby town of Robertson was founded. Wheat flour to the nearby farmers and transport riders was produced at the Old Mill house powered by the passing mountain stream. With the collapse of the ostrich feather trade, vines were introduced to the area, and a storeroom with underground wine tanks was built on Orange Grove to supply wine to KWV. Nomadic people shared this paradise as their legacy of empty caves and forgotten hand tools bear testimony to their hunting expeditions. It is the fresh mountain streams and abundant food which provided a haven for all. The Farm The farm is covered with aromatic fynbos, proteas and renosterveld, which in times gone by supported a perfect harmony of birds, fish, reptiles and mammals. This included black rhino, leopard and lion, which with quaggas roamed the open spaces along with numerous antelope, including tiny steenbok, springbok, grysbok, duiker and eland.

Nature Conservation There has been an on-going effort to remove aliens such as the Pine species, Eucalyptus, and Golden Wattle, from the watercourses and other sensitive areas on the farm. The arable farming footprint is only about 50 hectares and they are committed to biodiversity conservation and aim to leave the largest portion of the property in its natural state. Orange Grove Farm’s entire operation is based on sound environmental and conservation practices. This covers a wide spectrum, from the implementation of a conservation management plan, with ongoing monitoring of water quality and rainfall, to soil erosion and vegetation cover. They also ensure the environmentally friendly solid waste disposal of the human footprint. Sustainability At Orange Grove, it is all about creating a company that can show meaningful and lasting benefits for the natural environment, and the communities that surround their operations. They believe all businesses can take less and give more, and seek to do this through their daily actions, big and small, and consciously seek ways to leave a positive legacy for the earth.

Today the farm stretches over an area of 830 hectares with a further 2400 hectares of pristine mountain catchment area with abundant streams, waterfalls, rock pools and magnificent flora. The re-awakening of this beautiful farm is a continuous process. Orange Grove farm is rich in natural beauty. The property is largely covered in mountain fynbos and houses various Protea species. Along with the stunning veld the property also is home to the Breede or Burchells River Redfin, a fish endemic to this specific area. Romantic Setting When contemplating a romantic, elegant country setting and personalized service, Orange Grove Farm is the place to be. The Self-catering cottages are located far enough from each other in order to provide maximum privacy for guests. Access to each cottage is via its own private road.

Orange Grove Farm is a remarkable meeting place for the floras of the Karoo, Renosterveld and high mountain vegetation, with the various fynbos strata as their common denominator. Situated in the heart of Robertson’s valley of wine and roses, Orange Grove is less than two hours from Cape Town and is the ideal place to relax and rejuvenate.

The luxurious cottages are named after the areas where the owner mined diamonds, and each has a unique story to tell. They combine comfort and beauty, offering a setting in which to linger and relax. Each cottage is fully serviced daily by friendly staff, leaving the guest only to concentrate on unwinding and enjoying the magnificence of the surroundings. A private veranda and swimming pool to each cottage provides a relaxing vantage-point to take in spectacular mountain views, the overwhelming sound of silence, and the truly prolific birdlife.

Orange Grove looks forward in welcoming you as their guest to enjoy such luxury.

At night the crystal-clear sky, and no artificial lights, will spectacularly display the breath-taking canopy of the southern stars, simply leaving the guest breathless.

New Ultra Distance Triathlon Announced for South Africa

Two of South Africa’s most iconic towns are set to host the inaugural Race 2 Stanford half iron distance triathlon (1.9km swim – 90km bike - 21km run) on 18 November 2017. Established in the 1800’s, Hermanus, the famous tourist town and home of the whales and quaint, picturesque Stanford will show off their historic charm as they catapult this triathlon to rate high up as one of the most scenic triathlons in the world. The growth of triathlon in the South African community has led event organiser Paul Ingpen, who is no stranger to the triathlon community both locally & internationally to create this ultra distance triathlon which kicks off in the Hermanus Harbour. Athletes will have the rare opportunity to swim 1.9km in the Hermanus harbour before embarking on a challenging yet beautiful 90km loop from Hermanus to Stanford through the Hemel en Aarde Valley.

The 94km route of the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge gives riders a once-a-year chance to experience the streets of Johannesburg without any other vehicles on the roads. On Sunday, 19 November 2017 the Cycle Challenge will celebrate the 21th edition and will once again start and finish at Riversands Commercial Park in Fourways. With an altitude gain of 1488m over about 94.7km it’s not for the fainthearted with several short, sharp climbs near the end where professionals wil battle for King and Queen of the Mountain prizes. Beyond the physical challenge, cyclists can ride for a purpose by offering them an opportunity to use the race as a platform to raise funds for a cause or purpose close to their hearts. A special Blue Jersey is earned every year by the rider who manages to raise the most money for their purpose. The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge will once again be hosting a UCI 1.1 Women’s Race. The ranking afforded to the Cycle Challenge for the Women’s Race means that teams are invited to participate and gain valuable UCI points that count towards their world ranking, as well as their team’s world ranking. The Telkom 947 Kiddies Ride offers a wonderful adventure with closed off routes where children aged 2-10 with different skills levels get to experience an exciting day out where winning is not the main focus. Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge has also joined forces with Trek Bikes, to bring the ‘Trek Troopers’ to the riders to help the last few groups in the time frame required before reaching cut-off’s along the way, or at the finish. The routes constructed for this year’s Telkom 947 Mountain Bike Challenge on 11-12 November offer an upbeat nature adventure on a bicycle in the heart of Joburg. On Saturday, 11 November, there is also a 10km route with a great introduction to trails for beginners and a bit more of a challenge than the Telkom 947 Kiddies Ride for older or more eager kids.

The 21km run will see participants running three loops along the banks of the majestic Klein River, which boasts over 200 different bird species of which 30 are endemic to South Africa. South Africans are craving a local and affordable triathlon which has a holistic focus to include beauty and family as well as sport. The finish will be celebrated in Stanford’s old town square with a farm-style festival including beer, wine, cheese, food, art and live music, to create an amazing experience and weekend away for the whole family. Wine tasting boat cruises along the famous Klein River flowing through Stanford will allow visitors to engage with the beauty of the environment. Comments Race Organiser Paul Ingpen, “4 years in the making, together with a series of fortunate events has led all the pieces of the Race 2 Stanford to fit together to become a one a kind ocean half iron distance race.” “Cape Town lacks a quality half iron (ocean swim) distance triathlon course, and with the Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2018 being awarded to SA, the timing has worked out perfectly. The support from Wesgro, Stanford and Hermanus Tourism, Erdinger as well as the local community has enabled this dream to come to fruition on 18 November 2017.” For more information visit www.electricink.co.za/race-2-stanford

COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN FOR THE MUNGA The countdown has begun for 3rd edition of The Munga! Wednesday, 29 November 2017 will see almost 150 mad riders set off from the Sun International Hotel in Bloemfontein and brave the insane mid-summer heat of the Karoo!

The 2017 Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour will take place on Sunday, 3 December, starting and finishing at Stellenbosch High School.

From humble beginning almost three years ago when just 42 riders showed up on the start-line, the Munga has quickly begun one of the most compelling mountain bike races in South Africa. An unusual format sets it apart and makes it almost impossible to predict who will prevail or who will succumb!

“The 97km route climbs the New Helshoogte Pass shortly after the start, and once over the top, you’re rolling fast through spectacular scenery,” said David Bellairs, a director of event organisers, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

Last year saw female rider Jeannie Dreyer narrowly miss out on an overall win when she punctured just 80km from the end. Mike Woolnough, a veteran at 56 took third just two hours later and in the top ten were three development riders. No other race comes close to providing a format that is as authentic, compelling and unpredictable as the Munga is.

“It really is a great tour and whether you’re experienced or a novice rider, this is an excellent goal to fire up your training schedule for next year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour in March.”

The event is assisted by an unbelievable tracking system that allows fans and family alike to track their favorites rider 24 hours a day! “Outright race favorites…impossible to say! Too many factors affect a result in the Munga and time is the most important variable.”

“This year we are excited to host a handful of international riders. Hopefully they will get to savour the hospitality of the Karoo and the famous water-points. Keep pedaling,” says Alex Harris.
