The 122nd staging of the Helivac Paarl Boxing Day UCI Track Challenge on 26 December 2019 received the highest accolade in the sport when world cycling’s governing body announced last month that it is affording the event UCI status.

Paarl is undoubtedly the cradle of track cycling in South-Africa and quite a few local track cyclists annually make it into the final 25 Mile event. Boxing Day attracts more than 5000 spectators to the Faure Street Stadium.

It is the oldest event in all forms of cycling in the world still in existence, having not skipped a year since its inception in 1897.

With a host of South Africa’s best professionals, more than thirty quality track cyclists from all over Africa have already confirmed their participation in the 2019 Paarl Boxing Day meeting, which is presented in association with Alfa Bodyworks and the City of Drakenstein.

Paarl Boxing Day is revered worldwide in the sport of track cycling. There is a saying in Paarl that you might be the best track cyclist in the world, but it means nothing if you’re second best in Paarl.

“It means riders will now earn UCI points at the meeting, which enables their respective countries to qualify more riders to take part in the Olympic Games and World Championships. It’s crucially important because the Olympic Games are scheduled for next year,” said De Villiers. “The stature of the meeting has in my view justified its listing on the UCI calendar for quite some time,” said De Villiers. “It’s the oldest and one of the biggest track events in the world. It was staged for the first time in 1897 and hasn’t missed a single year. “Besides for the annual SA Track Championships, I think the last time South Africa hosted a UCI track event was back when Chris Willemse hosted a 3-Day in the Bellville Velodrome 16 years ago, so it’s going to be a very special occasion. Bringing cycling to the people is the motto of Paarl Boxing Day and we really want to do justice to the event’s reputation this year,” assured De Villiers. The meeting concludes with the famous 25-Mile and the winner of the final event is regarded as the winner of the day. In addition to a generous prize purse, the floating Minnaar Trophy, which dates to 1908, is also up for grabs. Cyclists with an international or domestic racing license are permitted to take part in the historic meeting.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the sport’s governing body globally and the Boxing Day organisation put forward a presentation earlier in the year for the event to be acknowledged and classified on the international track cycling calendar. UCI classification means the event will now attract a strong international field and significantly more international media exposure, according to event organiser Wynand de Villiers.

The Coronation Double Century, known in the cycling world as the CDC is one of the largest team time trials in the world – a favourite among fun riders. The camaraderie, scenery and the endurance challenge is what draws riders to the event each year. For most recreational cyclists the 202-kilometre loop from Swellendam is the longest and toughest journey on a bike every year. Anyone who’s ever been awarded the coveted Charles Milner Award will know the blood, sweat, tears, not to mention sheer guts, that are spent in pursuit of this renowned accolade that is given to teams when all 12 members cross the ﬁnish-line within 15 minutes of each other.

While the first team to get six riders across the line in each category will be crowned champions, the Charles Milner medal goes to each full team of 12 riders which finish inside the allocated 10 hours. It’s a tough one to call this year as most teams make the decision on the day, as the race plays out, whether to shed riders or push for the 12-rider finish. The Coronation Double Century began life as a non-competitive day in the saddle among long-time cycling friends. A Stellenbosch wine farmer, and fanatical cyclist Charles Milner, is traditionally considered the founding father of what has grown into one of the country’s most prestigious, challenging and scenic bike races.

The Burgos-BH team announced the hiring for the 2020 season of South African cyclist Willie Smit, runner of the WorldTour Katusha-Alpecin team this year. Willie Smit has become known to the general public during the dispute of the last Tour of Spain, when he managed to finish the race despite having suffered an important cut on one of his knees. However, this cyclist was already on the radar of the Burgos team: “We have been following him since 2017, when he came to compete in Spain as an amateur and added very worthy results to be taken into account. He won two classics, took stages in Galicia , Zamora and Segovia and the generals of Segovia and León. At that time we have already tried to sign him and since then we have always taken him into account, “says Julio Andrés Izquierdo, general manager of Burgos-BH.

Willie Smit, on the other hand, has also shown his satisfaction: “I feel very happy to run with Burgos-BH. For me, Spain is my second country. I love working with Spaniards and this calendar is the best for a runner. In addition, Burgos-BH has offered me a very exciting sports project. I know that I will have more freedom than in Katusha, but at the same time that is a responsibility that I needed at this point in my career. The triumph of Angel Madrazo in the Tour of Spain has set the bar very high for all the riders of the team, but we must start the 2020 season with the ambition to improve that level since the first race of the year,” the South African concluded. Burgos coach Julio Andrés Izquierdo adds: “Smit is going to adapt very well. He spends great seasons of the year in Spain, knows the language and is a runner who exceeds the average mountain well and is fast. In addition, he has quality to get into leaks, even from top level races, so I’m sure it will give us many joys.”

The panel has provided a report to the Executive Committee of Cycling South Africa and made recommendations for a process to be followed in order to address the matters raised, including the governance of the Federation. The Federation confirms that all the recommendations of the ad hoc investigation panel are being reviewed. A full disclosure of the findings and steps taken will be shared with the relevant institutions and authorities, including the Department of Sport and Recreation, SASCOC and the UCI. The Executive Committee of Cycling South Africa has accepted the resignation of the General Manager of Cycling South Africa, Mr Michael Bradley that took effect on 8 November 2019. Mike was part of the Federation for the last six and a half years and during that time made a number of contributions to the betterment of the sport. He leaves the Federation to pursue new initiatives.

ACTIVE BODIES AND PRIVATE CLIENT HOLDINGS WIN CDC On 23 November 2019, a searingly hot day in the Overberg town of Swellendam, the Active Bodies and Private Client Holdings teams blazed to victory in the 2019 Coronation Double Century. The men’s defending champions were once again in formidable form, leading at each time check; while the Private Client Holdings team, many of whom were making their debut in the race, likewise dominated the women’s race. The mixed category title was secured by the Johannesburg base UFO (Urban Fitness Outdoors) squad. For the earliest starters, there were overcast conditions to ensure a cooler ride through the initial kilometres. By the time Active Bodies set out though, rolling off the start line at the Swellendam Show Grounds, the mercury had already begun to climb. As defending champions, they were the final starters, a full 2 hours and 45 minutes after the first group, the Coronation Mechanics, had started at 5am sharp. There was drama for Active Bodies within the first 10 kilometres though; when they lost potentially their strongest rider, Matt Beers, to a puncture. They pressed on with 11 of their maximum 12 rider contingent, while Beers was left to chase on his own. Miraculously the man who usually represents NAD Pro MTB was able to catch up to the rest of his team by the time they reached Ashton, 120 kilometres into the race. Having returned to South Africa from a trial spell, as a stagiaire, with the UAE Emirates WorldTour team Beers is clearly in the best form of his career. He was not just a passenger for the remaining 80 kilometres though. Beers helped his team to a time of 4 hours, 23 minutes and 16 seconds; 8 and a half minutes faster than their 2018 effort. Behind Hendricks and his triple champions Alfa Body Works/Giant were second; for the second year in a row. They finished 6 minutes and 32 seconds behind Active Bodies, while The Hartlief Deli/Powerbar team were third. In the women’s race, rearranging of the starting order aided the top teams in their quest to set fast times and race each other without interference from slower open or mixed teams. “We hardly had any traffic” Stellenbosch Tri Squad/Specialized’s Kylie Hanekom praised. “We enjoyed a pretty much clean run which made a massive difference, in comparison to last year.”

Hanekom’s sentiments were echoed by Lara Tennent, the ride captain for Private Client Holdings. “Being able to get a clear run meant we could get into our pace lines and ride our own race,” she explained. “For most of the race we were actually first on the road, with just the head marshal’s car in front of us. It was amazing.” Private Client Holdings posted a stellar time of 5 hours, 47 minutes and 2 seconds on the 202-kilometre-long course. Their closest competitors were the Tiletoria Train who finished 9 minutes and 12 seconds back. The Stellenbosch Tri Squad/Specialized team was third, as they came up short in their title defence. Mixed category champions, UFO, were pushed all the way back to Swellendam by the second placed Bekker Steel Racing. With the teams spending differing amounts of time in the neutral and feed zones it was impossible for the team from Johannesburg to tell if they had won the race, despite leading on the road throughout.

RIDE JOBURG THRILLS WITH OVER 20 000 CYCLISTS AND SUPPORTERS The streets of Johannesburg were awash with enthusiastic cyclists who rode à bloc in Joburg’s iconic and most-loved cycling event. Attracting over 20, 000 cyclists on a 94,7km thrilling trail and 20 000 eager supporters. The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg is the worlds second-largest timed cycling race and features cyclists ranging from beginner to elite every year.

2,700 tackled a brand new, shorter route. The introduction of a shorter 40km route aims to encourage and promote an ever-growing culture of physical activity amongst cycling enthusiasts to match their fitness level. Cyclists included ex Springbok rugby player Breyton Paulse, John Smit former captain of the Springboks, Letshego Zulu, Bevan Cullinan and many more could be spotted through the crowds as they rode to chasing the acclaimed title in the race to beat their personal best. Amongst cyclists and charity organisations were popular South African media personalities Anele Mdoda and cycling star Daryl Impey who won a stage at the Tour dè France this year.

In its 23rd year the event returns to the sporting calendar with a twist to the traditional route and an inclusive cycling roadmap ensuring the participation of novice cyclists. Some 20,000 intrepid athletes braved the 95km challenge, while around

Elite male champion Marc Pritzen said, “To be honest it hasn’t sunk in yet but it’s definitely a race I’ve always wanted to win. My first ever bicycle race was the 947 kiddies race so it’s definitely a very special race for me.” “I have participated in 9 Ride Joburg events and today was a really hard day out on the bike. I’m really happy that I managed to time my sprint perfectly on this really difficult finish, special thanks to my teammates from Officeguru for the support today, I could not have done this without them.” Marc Pritzen joins NTT Continental Cycling Team - Marc Pritzen will join NTT Continental Cycling Team for 2020 having triumphed at the prestigious 947 Ride Joburg. NTT Continental Cycling Team is the continuation of the former Team Dimension Data Continental Team, which is one of the most successful U23 feeder team’s in world cycling. Marc has also been the number 1 rider in the Support SA talent Road Cycling series ranking in 2019.

2019 SAFETY CYCLE TOUR A team of cyclists and the Premier of the Western Cape, Alan Winde have completed the 2019 Safety Cycle Tour, riding from Saldanha Bay to Cape Agulhas, to spread the message of safety across the province and handing over 200 bicycles along the way.

The group of cyclists included members of cabinet, Western Cape Government officials, as well as cycling and mobility activists from organisations including Qhubeka, BEN bikes, Open Streets, Bicycle Cities, Bicycles and Beyond. During the four-day tour, bicycles were handed over to pupils from the Weskus Special School, Hopefield Highschool and to Neighbourhood Watch groups in the Breede Valley municipality. In Malmesbury, Qhubeka, a charity distributing bikes to communities and who took part in the cycle tour, handed over 105 bikes to learners at Ilingelethu High School. A simple bicycle has the ability to connect communities with educational and economic opportunities. Many of the school children who received bikes during this trip, will now be able to get to school quicker and more safely than before. Because the focus of the trip was on safety, children who received bikes also received helmets to keep them safe, and road safety tips to ensure safe cycling. “In Breede Valley, we handed over bikes sponsored by the Department of Community Safety which will help make Neighbourhood Watches mobile and more efficient. In Bredasdorp, I had the opportunity to meet some of the municipality’s Peace Officers on bikes.” “During the trip, I also focused on improved road safety- participating in road blocks and traffic blitzes, visiting the Worcester traffic department and assisting cyclists to be safer and more visible. As the Western Cape Government, we are focused on building a safer province, but safety is not just about crime. Safety is about our value system and taking responsibility for our safety and the safety of others by adhering to the rules, which include the traffic rules.” The group also visited the Jakes Gerwel Technical School in Bonnievale - a collaboration between the local community and the Western Cape Government. The community of Bonnievale stepped up and played a part to ensure that children in the area are able to access educational opportunities, and the world-class facility now ensures that the learners who attend, will develop necessary skills that will secure their futures, and address the skills needs of businesses in the area. “This trip gave us the opportunity to meet with community members, and see the work that municipalities are doing towards building safer communities. I hope that it has also inspired people to consider taking up cycling as a way to improve their mobility, connect them to opportunities and support systems, with the added benefit that they can also improve their health,” Premier Winde concluded.

The 17th Grootbrak Grabadoo will take place on Tuesday, 31 December 2019. Runners, walkers, families and even pets can participate in the most beautiful walk in the Garden Route, around the Great Brak River in a 4.8km route. Mountain bikers can choose from 4 exciting routes which includes some wonderful twists and turns in the forest – 15km, 36km, 53km, and 71km. Last year a record number of just over 1 300 participants took part. “Most of the participants are visitors to the Garden Route,” said Mimi Finestone of interface by goji, who started the event 17 years ago with a friend. First home was Gerhard Swanepoel of Pretoria and second Eben Kruger from Stellenbosch, who both finished the 4,8km in about 18 minutes. “We need this event, considering the amount of beer and food one consumes over the holidays,” said Kruger. Vodacom is again the premier partner for this year’s event. Some of the supporting partners include Thinus Nel Motors, De Dekke Spar, Mossel Bay Tourism & Coimbra Cycle house. Frontier Medix’s team will be in attendance throughout the race. “We will have a fully equipped medical tent at the start/finish on the sports grounds in the village, with stretchers, equipment and resus ready,” said Jacques Lourens. Mayflower Cricket Club and Caws 4 Paws will once again be the main beneficiary. Members of the Mayflower Cricket club also contribute their energy and time to the event. “The club regards itself as a critical enabler to further the game and to promote development of cricket at grassroots level. In addition, the club endeavours to promote social cohesion within the communities, ensuring a positive community spirit.” The MTB starts at 07:00, with the different distances starting at three-minute intervals, and the fun walk/run starts at 07:15. Entry forms will be available at Vodacom offices in the Garden Route, Klein Karoo and Port Elizabeth, while pre-entries can be done at Mossel Bay Tourism or Coimbra Cycle House in George. BELLVILLE VELODROME RETAINED FOR SPORTING & COMMUNITY USE This is the final approval necessary to effect transfer, which the City is legally obliged to undertake in this transaction. “The property is under-utilised and we are confident that the community at large will be excited by Council’s decision.” Both the City and the community will benefit from optimum use of the facility through securing a tenant based on a long-term agreement. This in turn will generate sustainable rental income over the lease period.”

Council’s decision reiterates the City of Cape Town's intention to structure a win-win situation for the broader community and the City. All sports clubs, schools and community groups that currently use the facilities at the Bellville Velodrome and Athletics Stadium are guaranteed reasonable and affordable access. Additionally, Bellville will benefit from the catalytic investment in the area. The overwhelming response during the public participation process that the Bellville Velodrome and Athletics Stadium be retained as a sporting venue for the community, still applies. This was also made clear in the original tender provisions. Through the finalisation of the Municipal Asset Transfer Regulations (MATR) requirements, the report before Council and subsequent approval simply gave effect to the 2009 Tender award. It affirms the City’s mandate, which is to ensure the facility is optimally used as a catalyst for economic growth and to the benefit of the community at large.

Key points: The City retains ownership of these facilities, which will remain public assets for the duration of the lease. The Velodrome and Athletic Stadium will be leased to and managed by the developer for an initial period of 30 years with two renewal options for an additional 15 years each. The tender submitted by Devmet Property Developments (Pty) Ltd (Devmet) and approved by the City contained the lease, upgrade and management of the Velodrome and Athletic Stadium. The purchase and development of vacant land surrounding the Velodrome and Athletic Stadium for retail, office, hotel, conference and residential development. Combining the existing facilities with commercially viable development will ensure a sustainable scenario and optimal utilisation of the capital asset. The City will use it as a catalyst for economic growth and for higher-intensity use. The Velodrome will be improved to include sporting opportunities, enhance its marketability with concerts, shows, trade fairs and exhibitions – the original intention with this development. In addition, a high-performance sports centre within the Athletics Stadium is proposed. The fee structure for the use of the facility and the events programme will be approved by the City in consultation with the sporting bodies. A City team under the leadership of the City’s Recreation and Parks Department will be established within 30 days of the resolution by Council. The Wines2Whales, world-class 3-day stage race in the Western Cape started with the Chardonnay on 25 October 2019 at Lourensford Estate in Somerset West, followed by the Pinotage mid-week event and finished with the Shiraz on 3 November 2019 within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus. Drama as dormakaba Win Wines2Whales Chardonnay A puncture, just 10 kilometres from the finish line in Onrus, turned the 2019 FNB Wines2Whales Chardonnay race on its head; on Sunday, 27 October - the final stage of the Chardonnay race. Seizing the opportunity provided by the overnight leaders’ misfortune, the dormakaba team, of Robyn de Groot and Amy McDougall, raced to stage and overall victory. Adelheid, who suffered the rear wheel puncture, and Candice Lill, finished 2 minutes and 37.8 seconds down on the stage to slip to second overall. The final margin of victory was 1 minutes and 3.5 seconds, meaning that Morath’s puncture had produced a 2 minute and 37.8 second swing in just 10 kilometres. “It’s never nice to win because of someone else’s misfortune,” a gracious De Groot began. “But it happens and we had to take the opportunity when it arose. We saw Adelheid stopping and then we knew we had to go flat out for the line.”

NAD Pro MTB Make it a Perfect 3 from 3 Wines2Whales Shiraz NAD Pro MTB wrapped up the 2019 FNB Wines2Whales Shiraz title in fine style, by winning their third successive stage, on Sunday, 3 November. Stage 3, which started in Oak Valley and finished at the seaside in Onrus, saw Matt Beers and Wessel Botha cross the line first; their stage-winning feat was matched by BMT Fairtree in the Exxaro Special Jersey. The Exxaro Special Jersey competition was won by Luyanda Thobigunya and Lorenzo le Roux. The BMT Fairtree pair claimed their third successive stage victory. Along with the prize money that Thobigunya and Le Roux won for their stage wins and general classification title, the pair also won education bursaries. In the Mixed category the Fairtree’s Jennie Stenerhag and Craig Gerber secured the title by 4 minutes. With the Shiraz champions crowned, the 2019 FNB Wines2Whales series of events came to its conclusion. WESTERN CAPE SCHOOL CYCLING The Western Cape Schools Cycling Association’s AGM was held on 30 October 2019 at Durbanville High School. The evening commenced with Guest speakers, Thando Mandla from South African Institute for Drug Free Sport, Ciska Du Plessis Austin (Cycling SA) and Meurant Botha (Spur Schools MTB League), each highlighting the importance of collaboration and partnerships within the sport of cycling, with specific reference to cycling on school level. During this event various topics, which included the chairperson’s feedback on the 2019 season, Spur Schools MTB League dates for 2020, and adding value to schools cycling were discussed, whereafter the election of the Western Cape Committee took place. Due to the large number of entries in the Western Cape (WC) Spur Schools MTB League in 2019, and the ongoing growth, it was decided that the Primary School and High School events are to be separated for the 2020 season. Dates for the 2020 Spur Schools MTB League Primary and High Schools have been confirmed. The Primary School venues, yet to be finalized, are presently scheduled to take place on 23 May, 1 August, 22 August and 12 September 2020. The League for the High Schools will commence on 25 April 2020 at Bloemendal, 16 May at Southy Vines, (Somerset West), 25 July at High School Montana, (Worcester) and on 15 August 2020 the Western Cape finals will be held at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

A new addition to the Schools League Finals this year was the SCSA awards. The governing body, Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA), acknowledged the top riders and officials at the event awarding Matteo Damilano (Reddam House Bedford View) and Zandri Strydom (Rob Ferreira HS) as men’s and ladies’ Junior Riders of the Year, while Deon Steyn received the Exceptional Service Award. In addition Provincial Awards were allocated based on the following criteria: Provincial structures in place, training of team managers and coaches, social media activations, schools database, skills training, inter-schools activities, and growth in terms of numbers. The category winners were: Limpopo - Administrator of the Year; Gauteng South - Upcoming Province of the Year with Western Province clinching the award as Province of the Year. WESTERN CAPE ROAD AND TT CHAMPS 2020 Cape Winelands Cycling will be hosting the Western Cape Road and Time Trial Championships from 11-12 January 2020 at Perdeberg Cellar on Vryguns road, taking riders through the Paarl and Wellington area.

The event will also double up as the Cape Winelands Road and TT Championships with local riders eligible for regional colours. The Time Trial will take place on the Saturday and the road races on the Sunday. The time trial circuit of 20km will follow an out-and-back route along Slent Road and applies to all categories, except for the Elite and U23 Men’s races that will cover a distance of 30km continuing over the other side of the 4-way stop. The start and finish-line will be at the same location. The Road race will take riders on a circular route of 72km. The Elite and U23 men will ride the route twice, while the Elite and U23 women, U19 boys and Vet men will ride shorter loops within the circular route. Cyclists in the Elite, U23 and Junior age categories are required to be in possession of a Full Racing Licence when competing for prize money in any cycling event sanctioned by Cycling SA or in the Provincial or National Championships within these respective age categories. Myriad Events will be performing the registration and timing functions for the event. Entries close on Thursday, 9 January 2020 at midnight.

WESTERN PROVINCE CYCLING ASSOCIATION AWARDS Western Province Cycling Association (WPCA) held their Awards Dinner on 1 November 2019 at the Cape Sun. Western Province Colours were awarded for both Road and Track Cycling for 2019, as well as Western Cape Colours for Road Cycling for the 2019 season. Malcolm Lange from Lange Sports, a guest speaker at the awards evening, hosted an informative Q & A session. Nicholas Dlamini, rider for NTT Pro Cycling, previously know as team Dimension Data joined Malcolm on the stage to ask a few questions. It was an honour to have both these cyclists on stage at the same time. Ciska Austin from Cycling SA addressed the award recipients with words of encouragement and support. One of the highlights of the evening was when John Moss received a standing ovation when he received his Western Province Colours for Track Cycling in the 70 - 74 age category. First, second and third place trophies were awarded to the top 3 riders in each category in the 2019 Western Province Road Cycling League where the categories ranged from U11 to Category 3. Sharief Peter, Chairman of Western Province Cycling Association presented Graham Ward, the Road Commissioner, with the Chairman’s Award for 2019.

JARROD MCGORIAN – MOUNTAIN CONQUEROR EXTRAORDINAIRE At Qhubeka, we are often amazed by our supporters’ passion and creativity, but Jarrod McGorian has truly inspired us with his courage and tenacity. Jarrod lives in Johannesburg, South Africa and has battled bladder cancer for just under 10 years. “To date, I have undergone 31 operations and a lot of chemotherapy to cure me of the disease,” he explains. “Unfortunately, I was recently told that the cancer has spread into my right ureter. Due to this, I now need to have a cystectomy and bladder reconstruction.” Jarrod decided that before he undergoes this operation, he wanted to attempt an “Everesting” for Qhubeka and two other charities. “This is a cycling challenge whereby you select a hill anywhere in the world. You then climb that same hill as many times as it takes to reach the total elevation of Mount Everest – 8 848m,” he says. Summiting the height of Mount Everest by riding a peak multiple times is similar in some ways to Jarrod’s journey fighting cancer. “Instead of repeated laps up and down a hill, it has been operation after operation, chemotherapy after chemotherapy. The challenge is a physical representation of the mental game I have been playing for 10 years,” he says. “I knew after reading about the Everesting challenge that I would attempt it.” Not only did he decide to take this epic challenge on, but he decided to do it to raise funds for three charities, one of which was Qhubeka. He and his loyal buddy Dan chose Northcliff hill in Johannesburg as their location.

VELOSOLUTIONS IZIMBALI SA’S FIRST BLACK FEMALE CYCLING TEAM Peschl Sports has joined forces with Velosolutions and the GO!Durban Cycle Academy to launch South Africa’s first black female cycling team, the Velosolutions Izimbali, which in Zulu means ‘flowers’, or ‘to blossom’. “We believe the name is very apt as our hope for these girls is that they will blossom into well-rounded, self-confident women, both on and off the bike,” says Shaun Peschl. The team is beneficial for the empowerment of individual athletes as well as for the growth of cycling on the African continent. It also has a knock-on effect in their local communities where the young women become role models for other girls to believe that they can achieve their dreams. Cycling is not seen as a ‘girl’s’ sport in typical township communities, but these ladies are defying stereotypes and changing perceptions of what is possible with hard work, determination and the right support team.

RAYNARD TISSINK SET TO TAKE ON THE 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 SA After 8 years of retirement from the sport of triathlon, South Africa’s most decorated professional Ironman athlete, Raynard Tissink, is making his come back to racing the sport he loves most. After more than 30 years in triathlon, Tissink has competed in 33 Ironman races, winning eight of them. Finishing in the top 10 at the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i on multiple occasions – rocking a 5th place finish in 2010. Isuzu South Africa have encouraged Tissink, who has been involved in triathlon for close to 30 years as an athlete and a coach, to compete in the Ironman 70.3 South Africa followed by the Ironman African Championship in 2020. Tissink will be looking to take on one more season of racing, this time as an age-grouper.

Being a former professional in the sport and the profound knowledge that Tissink has of the Ironman 70.3 South Africa course, it would take a brave man to bet against him podiuming in his age-group in one Ironman’s toughest Ironman 70.3 race circuits.

“When Isuzu first suggested that I race Ironman South Africa one more time, I was pretty hesitant. Whilst maintaining a reasonable level of fitness, I’ve enjoyed my retirement. I’ve been a golfer, surfer, mountain biker, trail runner, heart surgery patient, body builder, cross fitter, kite boarder and sometimes couch potato. However, my main focus has been coaching, and our athletes have helped encouraged me to race again.” After calling it a day on his professional racing career in 2011, Tissink and his wife harnessed his passion into investing in other athletes. Wife, Natalie Tissink (a former South African swimming champion), joined forces to start Team Tissink which is a successful endurance sport coaching club based in Nelson Mandela Bay. The sport of triathlon caught Tissink’s eye at 16 years old. He quickly mastered the art of the sport becoming an international sensation on both the short and long course distances. He had both the speed and stamina required to make him a household name in the triathlon scene. He took on his first Ironman race in 2000 (coming in 10th), back then it was held in Gordon’s Bay. He then went on to win Ironman Korea (2002; 2007), Ironman Canada (2003) and the Ironman South Africa (2005; 2010; 2011) in Nelson Mandela Bay. Tissink will be making his return as an age grouper, competing in the 45 – 49 category at the Ironman 70.3 South Africa taking place on Sunday, 26 January 2020,

GORDON CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTORY IN LIMPOPO Tzaneen - Crocodile Trophy winner Alan Gordon added the Limpopo Provincial Championship title to his list of achievement for the year when he was a convincing winner of the Insect Classic mountain bike event in Magoebaskloof recently. While the rest of the country was preparing to watch the Rugby World Cup showdown in Japan, Gordon was cruising home to a four-minute win over fellow Crocodile Trophy hero, Carel “CP” van Wyk. Just under a month ago Gordon and Van Wyk took on the gruelling Crocodile Trophy mountain bike race in Australia. Gordon followed in the pedal strokes of some well-known names by winning the eight-day race through the outback of Queensland while Van Wyk ended ninth overall. Their heroics Down Under raised question marks over whether they would have recovered sufficiently to be competitive in the mountainous terrain of the Magoebaskloof area for the Limpopo Provincial championships. There was no need to worry as the two dominated the action and filled the top two spots with Gordon notching up his fourth in the race in four years with a time of 2.57.39, while Van Wyk crossed the line in 3.01.45. Eight minutes further back Rory Button claimed the final step on the podium after edging out Bill Noel by just one second. Sydney Swart rounded out the top five in 3.19.46.

DE GROOT TAKES HONOURS IN 947 RIDE JOBURG MTB RIDE

The smiles of Robyn de Groot from Team dormakaba and Pieter du Toit lit up the grey skies of the north of Johannesburg after they took top honours in the 55km category at the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg MTB Ride held at Steyn City on 10 November 2019. De Groot powered away to claim a magnificent solo win under what she described as “near perfect conditions” at the new venue for the race. Sarah Hill was second, seven-and-a-half minutes behind De Groot, with Theresa Ralph finishing third some six minutes later. “I really enjoyed the trails,” said De Groot, who defended the title she won last year, coming home in two hours 10 minutes and two seconds.

In the women’s event Sarah Hill was in a class of her own as she claimed the women’s title with an impressive ride which saw her cross the line in 3.17.06, with Sanevey Scriven a distant second. In the shorter events, junior Armand Cronje claimed a tight victory over Oawie Grobbelaar with youth riders Tyrone Anders and Bjorn Nel both also finishing within eight seconds of the 45km winner. The women’s event was almost as tight with veteran Retha Beukes taking an eight-second victory over youth rider Amilia Goosen as sub-vet Jana De la Port ended up just a few seconds further back. The 20km saw Michael Scriven and Ali Thomson claiming the honours in the men’s and women’s races respectively while Johanno van Tonder and Lohane Ehlers came out tops in the 10km ride.

TRITANIUM WRAP-UP TriTanium, the first multidiscipline, multiday, multistage event globally, was held in KZN from the 1 - 3 November 2019. Through mud and rain, wind and sun, athletes showed what they were made of in what looks set to become one of the toughest races on the annual race calendar.

The hero event featured all 6 disciplines over 3 days: Day 1 Ride-Run (MTB & trail run), Day 2 Swim-Ride (dam swim & road ride) and Day 3 Swim-Run (sea swim & road run).

“I got away up the first drag with a good bunch of guys who rode really good lines through the single track,” said DeGroot, who said that this victory was the perfect end to what was a “short” year, but her “best season yet”.

But options were plentiful. Athletes could enter Day 1, 2 or 3 on a single day basis. Runners could enter just the two run stages, cyclists could enter the two cycling stages, and swimmers could enter the two swim stages. The event encouraged those who wanted to step out of their single discipline, multiday zone, to explore more than one discipline and those who are accustomed to three disciplines in one day to extend themselves over three days.

De Groot won bronze at the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships in Switzerland in September and believes she has been in the best form of her career having recovered from surgery to repair a vascular problem that restricted blood

flow in her left leg. The issue caused her pain and a loss of power in her left leg for two years, but having taken the brave and necessary decision to have the surgery in The Netherlands in January, she has had a new lease of life in her racing career. “It’s been a dream season, I’m riding pain free, things have gone so smoothly. This means everything to me. I haven’t had any of the symptoms again. I have my old personality back and am in such a good space.” While De Groot could take the time to celebrate her victory, Du Toit (Team Pyga Eurosteel) had to fend off Wessel Botha (Team NAD) in a two-man sprint to the line with Wicus Breytenbach in third.

GRAVEL GIRO Holla Trails in Ballito sees more and more gravel bikes on the mountain bike trails, but riding on gravel is not new. Before there was tar everywhere, cyclists all around the world used their bikes to get where they needed. There are a bunch of enthusiasts that own vintage bikes and are not afraid to get a bit of dust on them. On the 26th of October, a number of these enthusiasts gathered at Holla Trails in Ballito for the Gravel Giro. The route comprised of no hectic single track and Strava was forbidden, only riding in style with a big smile – especially after the water table in good old tradition; no energy drinks or gels but bread, salami and wine. Keep an eye on the facebook pages of @hollatrails or @classicsteelandvintagebicyclesdurban for the next time travel on the gravel.

Day 1 started and ended at Sugar Rush Park with new trails having been cut specifically for TriTanium by trail master Jasper van Vessem. Day 2 started at the tranquil Cable Ski Dam and ended, after a magnificent road ride, at Sugar Rush Park, and Day 3 started with a sea swim from Addington beach and ended after a scenic road run at the Beverly Hills Secret Garden in Umhlanga where spectators and athletes enjoyed well deserved refreshments and prizegiving. Challenging athletes to prove their mettle, TriTanium is named after the metal with the highest strength-to-density ratio – titanium. It’s strong, durable and resistant, just like the supreme athletes who battled it out to find out who is, indeed, TriTanium. By all accounts, athletes and spectators alike loved every minute and felt spoilt, celebrated and acknowledged. The toughness of TriTanium is counterbalanced with the personal attention given to each and every athlete so that, even though they are pushing their bodies and minds further than ever before, the rewards are worth the effort. “The TriTanium weekend was a celebration of endurance athletes and disciplines, but also the celebration of a lifestyle. What an incredible journey this has been and it’s just the beginning. The toughest of the tough athletes became a family this weekend.” Says Founder and Organsier Laura-Beth Eicker-Harris. WESTERN CAPE & WESTERN PROVINCE (XCO) & (XCM) AWARDS

On 8 November 2019 the Western Cape and Western Province Colour Award Ceremony for Cross-country Olympic (XCO) and Cross Country Marathon (XCM) Mountain bike (MTB) took place at Bloemendal Wine Estate hosted by Biosport. These awards showcased and rewarded the passion of mountain bikers from the nippers to the masters acknowledging their hard work, tremendous effort, and their outstanding performances throughout the year. The event was the perfect send off to the most explosive XCO and XCM season in recent times. Louise Ruwiel, Western Cape MTB Commissioner said: “Mountain biking is very well represented at the Western Province Cycling Association and at Western Cape Cycling. The sport continues to grow with many new MTB trails being built. It is encouraging to see the effort of organisations such as Schools Cycling South Africa bringing cycling and mountain biking to schools.” Louise continued saying that the Western Province MTB Commission works hard to have all the races sanctioned in the Western Cape across all the disciplines. Local sponsors such as the Western Province MTB Commission, SRAM, Tygerberg MTB Club as well as various loyal partners have contributed to a very successful 2019 season. The Western Province Mountain Bike Commission was also able to contribute an amount towards the expenses of 8 riders participating in the 2019 World Championships. Luke Moir placed fifth in the men’s junior race at the 2019 UCI MTB World Championships at Mont-Sainte-Anne in Canada, while Alan Hatherly won the first e-bike category at the UCI MTB World Championships in Québec, Canada. The 2019 MTB XCO series kicked off with 2 SA Cup Series races at Bloemendal on 5 February 2019. The event also doubled as the Western Cape XCO Series #1 with both races UCI sanctioned for Junior’s and Elites to enable them to earn valuable UCI points. Top international riders participated in both men’s and women’s events. The event was a great success with a record amount of entries.

Other Western Cape XCO Series events were also hosted at Rhebokskloof, Zevenwacht, and Diamant Estate which doubled up as the Western Cape Championships. David Grier from Miles for Smiles Foundation was the guest speaker at the event and shared a few crazy stories of his journey the past 12 years as inspiration to the riders to “Never Give up”. Some of David’s greatest achievements includes: The Great wall of China 4200km in 93 days, the coastline of South Africa 3300 km in 80 days, paddled from Africa to Madagascar 500km in 12 days an many more. His inspirational message to the riders was of hope and of making a difference in peoples lives through change, positivity, the right attitude, recognizing opportunity, and never giving up. SA XCO Women’s Champion Candice Lill, a true role model for cycling in South Africa joined the celebration and together with MC Shaun Peters handed over the Western Cape and Western Province Colours to the award winners. “We are looking forward to an exiting 2020 season with SA Championship race being allocated to the Western Cape. Well done to all the riders that did so well during the 2019 season in XCM and XCO, but also in Downhill and Enduro. Other achievements include: Henre de Villiers placed second in the Western Cape Downhill, Nick Etherton, a nipper won the SA Enduro Championships, while Luca Ruwiel claimed 2 championships, one for XCO and one for Enduro this year. We would like to encourage all the riders to participate in the downhill and endurance events for skills development.” “Tonight was not only the celebration of the top achievers and awards recipients. Tonight is a celebration of every single rider who trained with determination and performed to the best of their ability. We hope that you will continue to train hard, and be inspired by other riders’ achievement, but most of all - you ride because you love it! Louise Ruwiel concluded.

CELEBRATION OF SA CHAMPIONS On 19 November 2019 the cream of South African Cycling, celebrated South African road cycling talent at the annual Support SA Talent Road Cycling Series Awards, presented by Jaguar Land Rover Sandton. Phil Liggett, patron of the Support SA Talent Project, and Continental Pro Cyclist Myles Van Musschenbroek once again entertained over 150 guests at the annual Support SA Talent Road Cycling Series Awards function with special guest World Tour rider, Ryan Gibbons. Thirty six riders and five teams, were presented awards across seventeen categories at the prestigious event and, over R70 000 worth of prize money was awarded on the evening.

REWARDING QUATTRO ROAG SERIES' TOP ACHIEVERS

One of the highlights of the KZN mountain biking and trail running year took place recently when the Quattro ROAG Series powered by Momentum Awards Dinner handed out the biggest series prizes in the country for both sports. The big winners were runaway mountain bike series winners Tyronne White and Christie Hearder, and the respective men’s and women’s trail running series winners Nomore Mandivengerei and Sarah Gray. White and Hearder collected R25 000 each for their efforts after they both ended the series with the maximum of 600 points. Mandivengerei and Gray ended the year on 514 and 572 points respectively took home the trail running prizes. The Quattro ROAG Series powered by Momentum takes place in conjunction with ten of the KZN province’s top one-day mountain bike and trail running events that runs from February through to September. Riders earn points based on their race positions in a Grand Prix system with the best six results counting toward their final finishing positions.

A number of fundraising items were auctioned including Daryl Impey’s Green 2018 Criterium du Dauphine Jersey, Ryan Gibbons 2019 Dimension Data Jersey and an original water-colour artwork by South African artist Richie Ryall, depicting and signed by Daryl Impey, Nicholas Dlamini, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Phil Liggett. The Road Cycling Series which was started in 2018 by ProTouch Sports recognises local talent and, ranks over 500 athletes in the (Men’s and Women’s) Junior, U23 and Elite categories. This year, the Veteran A (30 - 39 years) and Veteran B (40 - 49 years) categories were also added, due to popular request from the racing veterans.

Last years’ Road Cycling Series winners’ – ProTouch handed over the local SA Club Racing title to Office Guru Racing U23 riders, with Marc Pritzen - the current U23 National Road Champion on the top step of the Overall Series Winner, Best Young Rider and Best Tour Rider Competitions. Office Guru also won the 2019 Best Overall Team. Office Guru’s Dylan Girdlestone finished in 2nd place in the Best One-day Classic Rider Competition to stalwart Nolan Hoffman (Team Enza/ Proud Beginners) and 2nd place in the Best Tour rider, to team mate Marc Pritzen.

The series rewards the top three men and women overall in both the trail running and mountain biking categories with the biggest series prizes handed out in South Africa. The series also rewards nearly 100 competitors in the various age groups from nippers to grand masters in the MTB series and U13 up to masters for trail runners. ROAG also sponsors R5000 cash prize to winning high and junior school for the development of mountain biking at the school. This will also be extending to the trail running component next year. The Quattro ROAG Series powered by Momentum is organised and administered by the Race Organisers Admin Group (ROAG) which is one of South Africa’s biggest entry and event administration systems for participation sports.

In the Ladies Category, Carla Oberholzer (Demacon – Max Wax Team) won the Overall Series Leader, for the second year in a row and alongside team mates Lynette Burger, Heidi Dalton, Kim Le Court, Azulde Britz and, Suzan Cronje won the Best Overall Ladies Team again. The Junior category was dominated by Christiaan Klopper from TEG Racing, seizing the Best Tour Rider and Overall Series Leader, with team mate Dian Fritz winning the Best One-Day Classic Rider position. In the Junior Ladies category, Absolute Motion’s Francis Janse Van Rensburg won the Overall Series Leader and Team Customised’s Courtney Smith winning the Best Young rider category. ProTouch won the Top African Team category, as the number one UCI-ranked Continental Road Cycling Team in Africa.
