LOCAL HEROES PERFORM FOR SA NATIONAL COLOURS

In the women’s race Western Cape cyclist Candice Lill raced to victory at the 2019 South African XCO Champs on a dry and chilly highveld afternoon at Thaba Trails in Johannesburg on 20 July 2019. All the excitement happened at the women's race when Candice Lill claimed her first elite national title beating her rival, Mariske Strauss by a comfortable 48 seconds with Cherie Redecker in third place. The last time Candice won the national champs was back in 2013 when she raced in the U23 category. Her cycling career reached new heights when she won the South African MTB XCO Cup Series #4 at Mankele

The Cederberg Circuit takes you on a 247km journey through winding historical mountain passes, past crystal clear rivers and unique nature reserves. This circular route starts and ends in the citrus haven of Citrusdal. The ride begins with a gentle cycle along the eastern bank of the Olifants River, which is flanked by orchards. Just 20km out, you pass by the oldest orange tree in the southern hemisphere (planted in 1777). A sharp right turn takes you into the heart of the Cederberg mountainscape, famous for its other-worldly rock formations and fynbos floral kingdom. Soon, you’ll reach the hiking and rock climbing mecca of the area, Algeria. From here, the route kicks up as you ascend the Uitkyk Pass, the summit of which provides spectacular views down the valley. Photo: Riders taking a break - Photo Credit: Retroyspective After the pass, you head down the next valley, past a few settlements and a wine farm - definitely worth a stop! After Kromrivier, there are some rock art paintings off to the right of Truijieskraal. From Mount Ceder olive farm to Op Die Berg on the banks of the Grootrivier, the route winds along the base of the Sneeuberg mountain range. The views across to Middelberg Peak, Meulenskop and the Elandkloof valley are something to behold. Take care down the fast-paced tarred road pass, which is a screamer all the way into Citrusdal and the finish point. Cyclists can make use of the bike-friendly accommodation along the Cape Cycle Route network.

Tiffany Keep, U23 National Road Champ claimed the victory over Danielle Strydom in the U23 women’s race and continued her winning streak after her recent win at the University Sports SA (USSA) Cycling Champs and the Knysna Cycle Tour. Zandri Strydom, a very technically gifted mountain-biker completely blew the field apart in the Junior women’s race, beating Emma van Coller by 6 minutes 18 seconds

The West Coast not only boasts with cycle routes, but also showed an increase in cycling event in the area. One being the Namaqua Daisy Challenge that took place on 10 - 11 August 2019 at Die Keldery in Vredendal. In addition to the 1-day races, the annual Namaqua Daisy Challenge offered a 2-day Extreme Challenge for mountain bikers and trail runners - consisting of a technical stage, a night ride, and lastly a gravel ride or run. The 55km technical stage kicked off with a ride through the outskirts of Vredendal, some single track, technical climbs and even a short rock garden where riders could experience the daisies in bloom as well as the beautiful views over the valley. This stage was followed after sunset with a 15km night ride. On Day 2 riders were challenged with a 95km gravel ride toward Doringbaai, along the sea to Strandfontein. From Strandfontein riders cycled next to the Sishen/Saldanha railway line where some riders had the pleasure of cycling alongside the longest train in the world, 3.78km long with 342 waggons, powered by 8 electric locomotives, carrying a payload of 41,400 tons of iron ore traveling at an average speed of 80km/h on its way to Saldanha. Riders travelled back via the Olifants River canal and farm roads towards Vredendal. The 2-day extreme event was well contested by locals as well as participants from as far as Cape Town. Freddie Visser was the men’s winner in the 2-day Extreme MTB event, with Karl Janse van Rensburg in second and Daniel Fritz completing the podium. Francis Visser won the women’s category with Cathy Carstens and Marzahn Theart second and third respectively. Many locals took part in the 1-day races on 11 August as well as in the fun-filled and colourful Colour Fun Run & Ride, which is always one of the highlights of the Namaqua Daisy Challenge. After all the weekend activities, participants and their families gathered at Die Keldery for some festivities and celebrations in true Namaqua style.

INTRODUCING THE 100 MILER SERIES ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA 100 Miler event organizers in South Africa have come together to present the first ever 100 Miler Series in South Africa. Races forming part of the series that kicks off in 2020 are: Ride the Karoo; Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo; Race to the Sun; Trans Elands; Around the Pot; Maloti 100 Miler; and Race to the Sea; The series will be based on a points system through SA Seeding, where a rider’s top four results will count towards his/her final series standing. Seven unique 100 miler events will showcase tough yet spectacular routes all over South Africa. Using some the best gravel and jeep track roads in South Africa this will be a series for all to enjoy. The series winner will walk away with massive bragging rights, get their name engraved on the coveted “100 Miler Series” trophy and take home a pay check from the R50 000 prize purse. The series kicks off on 22 February 2020 with Ride the Karoo. The event takes place close to Middelburg, in the Eastern Cape, on Fairview Guest Farm and treats riders to the beautiful expanses of the Karoo. After a hot start, the series moves to Prince Albert in the Western Cape, for the Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo on 25 April. It boasts a mixed route of gravel and tar but serves up spectacular views throughout, including highlights like the Swartberg and Meiringspoort Passes. The third event in the series takes riders to Hartbeespoort, on 25 May, for Race to the Sun. It challenges cyclists to ride through picturesque landscapes and rugged North West Province terrains to the finish at Sun City. On 6 June the fourth event in the series, the Trans Elands, will start near Jeffery’s Bay. From its origin near the surf capital of South Africa the route loops through the Eastern Cape’s Gamtoos and Elands River Valleys, where riders can expect some big climbs as well as technical descents. The series then moves to Swellendam, in the Western Cape on 18 July, for the Around the Pot. Rolling hills, through the wheat and canola fields of the Overberg, make for breath-taking views throughout the 100 mile route. The penultimate event, scheduled for the inaugural edition of the series will be the Maloti 100 Miler, on 26 September. Starting in the Eastern Cape mountain hamlet of Barkly East; riders can expect big climbs, including Naude’s Neck Pass on the course to the finish line in Maclear.

The final event of the 2020 series is also the newest addition to South Africa’s gravel racing calendar, the Race to the Sea. Starting in Franschhoek and finishing in Hermanus, it will take riders from the historic heart of the Winelands to the Atlantic Ocean in the best way possible, by bicycle. The 100 Miler Series features two categories in which winners will be awarded with prize money; Open Men and Open Women. However, the top riders in the Sub Vets, Vets, Masters and Grand masters categories will also earn their spot on the final series podium. Competitors should take note that not all events in the series are sanctioned by CSA. Some of the events in the series do also offer shorter route options and team entry options too, but only Solo entrants in the 100 miler race distances will qualify for series points. Each event will remain a unique stand alone event, true to its area and organising staff, but will ultimately form part of this brand new exciting series. SA’S JEAN SPIES NOW RANKED 2ND IN THE WORLD These results are a high after what has been a relatively low start to the season. Spies has had some bad luck, with his racing bicycle that got stolen, crashing and having surgery all within a few weeks of the other. It didn’t stop this determined young man, he managed to raise the funds for a new bicycle and headed off to the USA, Ireland and Italy to compete. The results he attained are the crucial factors that gave him these rankings. A third place in America in the 1km TT by 0.2 seconds behind the world record holder, Francois Pervis, proved that Spies was once again on the upwards trajectory. Spies is a privately funded athlete, traveling the world competing in the events that make up the UCI qualification criteria for the Olympic games in Tokyo next year August. As we understand these rankings will go towards qualifying South Africa for a space in the sprint events at the Olympics. As current African and National champion in all three disciplines, it is hoped that Spies will be the selected rider to fill this space, when the time comes. The latest UCI (Union Cycliste International) world rankings show Jean Spies to be ranked in 2nd in the world for the 1km time trial, (affectionately called the Kilo). Known as the race of truth, as it is the rider versus the clock for one kilometer. Spies admits he loves to hate it and hates to love it, but agrees it is one of his strongest events. Not only has his 1km TT improved in world rankings, but Spies is also now ranked 15th and 28th in the kierin and sprint respectively.

“Second in the world, wow!” Spies said shaking his head with a smile. “It has come as a nice surprise, especially considering how difficult the year has been.” Spies will be focusing on the World Cup season starting in November. “I am lucky to have enough points right now to qualify for the World Cups, which means, I can do a focused three-month training block in preparation for them,” explained Spies as he headed out for another tough gym session. His current Rankings: 2nd in the 1km Time Trial, 15th in the Kierin, and 28th in the Sprint.

EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS FOR SCHOOLS CYCLING IN SA The growth of the Spur MTB League over the past 10 years is one of the great success stories in South African cycling. The League has changed the cycling participation landscape to a youth heavy environment with thousands of youngsters participating in all provinces. This growth has necessitated the development of organisational structures as well and over the past years provincial schools structures in many provinces have developed as the driving force behind the League’s growth. In terms of scope, only the USA based NICA program can rival the League internationally. Schools cycling is formalised under South African Schools Cycling (SASC), a statutory body and an associate member of Cycling South Africa. A league such as this one requires a detailed ruleset to ensure free and fair competition and participation and it is here that affiliation to the national body is key. Further, a young rider's participation path leads him/her straight to Olympic participation via Cycling South Africa, emphasising the importance of this link. In turn, the League has been operated as a non-profit entity under the guidance of Amarider. Amarider’s role is that of facilitation and ensuring that the necessary resource reaches coordinators on the ground. Amarider’s experience in event and trail management has been key in driving product development and project sustainability, while at the same time ensuring that the League remains attractive to participants, sponsors and partners. The League has been instrumental in developing the governing structure by aiding the establishment of SASC and resourcing its development by funding the training of managers, coaches and commissaires. Over the past months an agreement was reached where SASC will have much more operational responsibilities within the League. Converting schools to become participants is not an easy endeavor and it is clear that participating schools and the interscholastic network is the best platform from which to drive new participation. The role of a committed sponsor cannot be ignored and here Spur Steak Ranches has to be commended for its role and vision in co-founding the program. To see the League evolve from scattered grass roots efforts into a program that is on track to achieve official school sport status is certainly something to be very proud of. With the brand’s commitment in 2018 to support the League for a further 10 years, Spur’s intentions with the program is firmly cemented. It is indeed this official schools sport status that is driving all parties involved to work together tirelessly to achieve a common goal that will certainly unlock the future growth of the sport. To this end SASC has been hard at work hosting several

national workshops to develop a roadmap outlining collaboration with the League and Amarider. SASC is also excited to announce the rebranding of the organisation to Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA), aligning the organisation with the national body (Cycling South Africa) and streamlining its operational title to Schools Cycling. This collaboration is placing the building blocks for the sport’s future development firmly in place and gears schools cycling to sustain the meteoric growth achieved since 2009. “With Schools Cycling SA and the League’s shared objectives to grow, develop, promote and establish cycling as an official Schools Sport across the country, SCSA is looking forward to this powerful collaboration. Schools Cycling SA will focus on adding more value to Schools with new programmes and more cycling offerings presented to Schools in 2020. SCSA wants to invite Schools across the country to contact our National office or respective Chairpersons in the different Provinces to become part of the magic of Schools Cycling and give even more children the opportunity to participate in this great Team Sport . Together we can secure Schools Cycling’s future creating healthier children and families,” Annelize Ziehl-Owens, SCSA President.

UPDATE ON FNB WINES2WHALES 2019 ROUTE DEVELOPMENTS A winning multi stage route formula is a combination of venues (start, overnight, finish), plus a minimum logistical hassle factor; distance from airport, main roads and alternative luxury accommodation, route distances, ascends, scenic and interesting sections and well stocked and sufficient water points. Should you change it? And if yes, how do you change a route as popular as the FNB Wines2Whales Route? “Mountain bikers are more adventurous than roadies, so they prefer to cycle new routes, few prefer the same over and over. Maybe it’s to do with their love of nature, being out in a mountain, appreciating the beauty and diversity of the South African landscape,” says Johan Kriegler, Founder of Wines2Whales. How do you change it? “If the venues are great, it stays your backbone beacons; you can’t change it drastically as it’s the best venue options aligned to the character and logistical requirements of the event. Secondly there are route givens - the long and steep Lourensford climb to sort out the online seeding bunches; walk over Gantouw, the only safe corridor to Grabouw, Kromco-PERI Playpark, the two culverts under the N2 allowing one loop on the southern side of the N2, Houwhoek Valley, Katpass, Steelbridge and the available network of single tracks. We also had to make route and structural changes due to the massive fires we had in January and February, which destroyed a number of wooden structures, especially in Paul Cluver,” Johan continues.

During August Cape Trails also improved the flow of Grabouw singles in the I to N sections. A lot of time and effort was spent to rebuild Witklippies 1 and 2, Boomslang and ultimately Pofadder (now in its 3rd edition and a carpentry and construction master piece of note). “Then we had to replace the first of the third section of Stage 2 with an added third in Lebanon. It’s been eight years since we last cycled the Lebanon trails, a great flowing and mostly downhill single track, swirling between the Elgin pines. The steep climb at the start of stage 2 has been eliminated, although a similar steep climb has been added 7km later (when your legs are more conditioned). At 10km, you’ll start sooner with the Oak Valley singles than before, shooting down Vissie’s Magic,” Johan adds. On stage 3 Cape Trails had to rebuild and re-route the Korteshoven single track along the Jakkels river towards Houwhoek, which was destroyed by the February fire. It took Cape Trails a month to build this new master piece; Rocky, higher up the koppie, more flowing and faster, adding another 20 metre bridge to cross a cliff.

“So I thought let’s replace the latter half of Stage 1, with the first section of Stage 2. Once in Grabouw, let’s only do A - N and then take a more straight line (with a new single track) down to Grabouw Country Club. From the Country Club let’s use the start section of Stage 2 to get to Oak Valley (to eventually also resolve the 10 year bottle neck at the Mara single) and add a new downhill Oak Valley singles to the finish,” Johan explains.

“We might add another single track in Karwyderskraal, but more scouting and landowner liaison have to be done. Last route news is that the finish is again at Onrus Caravan Park, offering a more scenic and flowing trail to the finish than the 2018 Hermanus finish, Johan says. Another 2019 route related feature is the admission of e-bikes in the Pinotage, the mid-week event. E-bikes have proved to be a popular and growing trend, offering a wider scope of mountain bikers the opportunity to experience the FNB Wines2Whales route and ‘gees’, on an easier mode of transport. “Come and join us on another interesting chapter of the FNB W2W Adventure,” Johan concludes.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE BIKE BOX

“Our BikeBox is ready to travel the world with you and your bike. After months of designing, testing, folding and more testing BikeBox has ticked all the boxes including full protection, durability, waterproof, affordability, lightweight, easy storage and is produced locally,” says Christine Collins, Inventor and founder of the BikeBox Company.

Christine Collins, of German origin moved to South Africa 15 years ago to join her husband John Collins. Christine has a Diploma in Geology, but soon after her studies re-orientated into the Sporting Event business. Together Christine and John founded the company, Magnetic South in Knysna which to date organises sporting events. Other than organising a number of Adventure based Events, Christine and John also participated in the Sport of Adventure Racing – especially John who is part of Team Painted Wolf, and who also competed in a number of World Championships. “Adventure Racing involves a number of Adventure Sports, one of them being mountain biking. As most races take place in remote areas in different places around the world, we travelled a lot with our bicycles. Anybody who travelled with a bike before would know that it is a schlep,” Christine explains. Challenges facing whilst travelling with bikes “Challenges that we needed to overcome during our travels included first and foremost the safety of our bikes. We tried the cheap and light option of a cardboard box which ended up getting wet and disintegrated to the detriment of our bikes. We travelled with expensive bike bags and hard-shell cases, but then we faced the challenge of weight allowances dictated by the airlines, and if not complying, massive excess baggage fees at check-in are levied. And then the next challenge is the box itself. Once arrived at the destination you might have hired a small vehicle or be picked up by friends or family with a normal size car. You will always be able to fit your disassembled bike into the car, but what about the box?” Christine continues. “Bike Boxes take a massive amount of space when stored – and let it be 2 boxes – you have to park your car outside. All these challenges made me think. I was intrigued and started designing a collapsible BikeBox,” Christine adds. This process was done after-hours, while Christine was organising events for Magnetic South, and it took her the better of a full year. In March 2018 Christine decided to quit her day job and gave the BikeBox project her full attention. The Ultimate Bike Box Christine spent hours testing on different bikes, sizes, models of components, including the registration of her design patent. She sent boxes around the world to friends and anybody who was willing to test her product. Christine kept designing and improving her designs and added the Bike Guards which is protective Inners that fold around the fragile components such as derailleur, crank, disc brakes, gear cluster and front shock. The result – two different sizes, Bike Boxes for mountain bikes, and Bike Boxes for road bikes. The BikeBox produced by the BikeBox Company was launched in March 2019 at the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the feedback received was overwhelmingly positive. A foldable “Box-in-the-Box” which offers convenient space for bicycle accessories during transport as well as wheels for ease of transport in the airport were added to the product. BikeBox - Our BikeBox is a strong, waterproof alternative for traveling with your bike over multiple journeys. The box weighs a mere 6kgs. It folds into itself and uses 80% less storage space than a hardcover box. Bike Guards - The BikeBox includes a set of Bike Guards. TEAM DORMAKABA CYCLISTS QUALIFY FOR WORLD CHAMPS

Team dormabaka cyclists Robyn de Groot and Samantha Sanders have been selected to represent South Africa at the UCI Cross Country Marathon (XCM) World Championships to take place in Switzerland at the end of September. The two will join Sarah Hill as the three-member elite South African women’s team competing at this prestigious event in Graechen, in the Valais canton in Switzerland. “We are incredibly proud of these two ladies on their selection and qualification for the World Champs. PLANNING FOR WILLOWBRIDGE MTB EXPO 2020 IS UNDERWAY

Willowbridge Shopping Centre located in Tyger Valley, hosted its first MTB Expo in association with Into Cycling Newspaper from 2 – 4 August 2019. The three-day dedicated cycling event showcased 49 exhibitors from within the industry including the latest mountain bikes, accessories, nutrition and bike trails.

Organisers and event partners were thrilled with the feedback and support from the community with over 50 000 visitors attending the event. The event catered for all ages and included a Pump Track hosted by Radtrax, the Willowbridge Slow Market, live music by The Boxer The Ring, Cherry Vinyl and Hugo Veldsman. The existing Willowbridge restaurant and retail offering as well as in-centre jungle gyms for children enhanced visitors experience by offering convenience and a vast selection of dining options. The event was shared across Willowbridge Shopping Centre and Into Cycling Newspaper social media platforms and included live giveaways and interviews hosted by Shaun Peters Media & Commentating. Giveaways included collaborations with brands such as Oakley and Trail’s End Bike Hotel. Tygerberg MTB members received complimentary parking on the day. Enthusiastic MTB riders Hugo Potgieter and Jaco Lategan have teamed up with many great organizations to raise money and awareness for Khula Development group and to take part in the Absa Cape Epic 2020. The team, known as TEAM BODYTEC have launched a campaign called MILES 4 MINORS which will be the vehicle to raise money for Khula development group to help kids at risk of dropping out of school. The name came from Jaco Lategan’s passion for kids and children’s education and the future of South Africa. He wanted to be actively involved in local kids and the initial thought was to cycle kilometres for kids, raising awareness and money. Khula development group is a non-profit organization integrating primary school children at risk of dropping out, back into the school system. The total number of learners is 846 across 22 Schools, and the aim is to secure sponsors for 846km’s @ R350 p / km’s to reach a target of R300,000. They have teamed up with BODYTEC Paarl and BODYTEC George where the team will get their much needed strength training through electro muscle stimulation (EMS) for the Absa Cape Epic 2020. FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE! - IT'S TIME FOR THE CAPE DUO CHALLENGE In a calendar filled with same-same events, the Cape Duo Challenge offers a unique opportunity to settle the roadies vs. mountain bikers arguments, once and for all. Bring both your road and your mountain bikes to Wellington from 4-6 October for the third edition of the Cape Duo, which challenges individuals or two-person teams to complete – together, not in a relay – roughly 207km over three days, on a variety of terrain. Friday’s 106km (1 300m ascent) takes the riders from the Bosman Family Vineyards race venue over Bainskloof for a loop around the gorgeous Slanghoek Valley before scaling Bains again, to return. The skinny wheels are then set aside as Saturday’s stage is a 49km mountain bikers’ delight through the famous Wild Boar Trails, with a heady mix of lung-busting climbs, sublime single track descents and just enough open road to keep watered and fed. With a shade over 1 200m of ascent, this is not the wildest the Boars could have found, yet it will remain a good test for hardened off-roaders and trembling roadies alike. The latter needn’t panic – both MTB routes have been designed as fun, yet fair physical tests, without being frightening.

Then the pièce de résistance, Sunday’s double-header: A 26.8km road time trial (there are not that many TTs on the amateur calendar) on the Lady Loch circuit that has hosted provincial and national championships runs straight into the final 25km MTB stage, on a different section of the Wild Boar network. TIMBERCITY CYCLE TOUR - A SEEDING EVENT FOR CYCLE TOUR 2020 The 9th Edition of the Timbercity Cycle Tour hosted by Eden Cycling Association will take place on Sunday, 29 September 2019 in Oudtshoorn. The Timbercity Cycle Tour will once again be a seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour taking place in 2020. This gives riders from surrounding areas also an opportunity to improve their seeding without traveling to the Metropoles to do so. For those riders not interested in seeding can come and enjoy the Klein Karoo hospitality and one of the most scenic routes in the country. The road race on Sunday will cater for every level of cyclist with a flat 30km, a slightly more challenging 57km to the Cango Caves and then the 104km that stretches into Matjiesrivier at the foot of the Swartberg Mountain range. It has a 1200m accent with a very fast last 42km. The 104km route is challenging, but worth the effort when greeted with the natural beauty of Oudtshoorn and surroundings. This is one of the reasons why Director of Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, David Bellairs takes part in this event and has confirmed he will be back in 2019. The Timbercity Cycle Tour will start and finish at Brian’s Grill and Family Restaurant in Baron van Reede street, also a secondary sponsor together with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the event.

TUV NORD HERITAGE TOUR BY CYCLOPATHS CC The second edition of the TUV Nord Heritage Tour by Cyclopaths CC will be taking place from the 21-24 September 2019 from the Paardeberg Winery on the Vryguns Road just outside Paarl. The Race Permanence will be the Perdeberg Cellars for the 1st, 2nd and 4th stage, while Killarney International Raceway in Milnerton will be the venue for the circuit races on the Monday afternoon/ evening. The event forms part of the WP Road Racing League 2019. The Overall General Classification will count for points in the WP Road Racing League for all Categories. The event is open to all Juniors, Elite, Veterans and Ladies as per the WP Racing Handbook. Cyclists in the u17 age category will not be allowed to participate as the distances are longer than what is recommended by UCI regulations. KOM, Points competition for Category 1, General Classification leaders jersey for all Categories, and daily stage prizes for all categories will be up for grabs. Beat the unbeatable! Imbuko Family Vintners will be hosting the “IMBUKO BIG FIVE MTB CHALLENGE” on Saturday 22 February 2020. Riders will endure a total ascent of 3 020m over 75km, making it the ultimate one-day event to test your strength and fitness only three weeks before the 2020 ABSA Cape Epic. ENJOY A WEEKEND BREAK AT THE LANGEBERG LINK MTB A good way to start the September holidays, or even a pleasant weekend break is to experience and ride the Langeberg Link MTB 3-Day stage event from 20-2122 September on the farm Oudewerf, 12km outside Swellendam and on the R60 towards Ashton. This is an excellent opportunity to bring the family and enjoy the hospitality of the farming community and explore the foothills of the majestic Langeberg range in the countryside near Swellendam on the Garden Route. The race is open to all mountain bike enthusiasts. Riders can choose between a long route, or a short route and the event also offers solo entries in all three days, or single days. The Langeberg Link MTB route has never before been cycled on by any race before 2017, and will once again take place mostly on private farm land, not open to the public – thus ensuring the uniqueness of the event. The track, where normal access is limited, is purposely designed that cyclists can enjoy the overwhelming beauty of fauna and flora in the area and experience some breath-taking views of waterfalls. Cycling Day 1 will see an all new ‘night race’. This will be a 2.4 kilometre lap route on the farm, starting at 19h00. Riders need to complete as many laps as possible within an hour and will have to enter and exit the barn on completion of each lap in order for timing to be done correctly. The cyclist with the most number of laps will be the winner of the ‘night race’. Although solar lamps at short intervals will be along the route to make it more visible, front and rear lights are compulsory. Day 2 is a 61km route, which consists of a combination of gravel travel, jeep track and single track. The reason for this action is to to give the legs a good warm-up and prepare riders for the final stage. Day 3 is a 21km technical route, and although shorter than the previous day, the scenery will be a handsome reward. The ‘challenging hill’ will be awaiting the riders. Besides a ‘king and queen of the mountain’ award, there will be a prize for the first person to cycle all the way to the top. If no rider succeeds, the prize will be awarded to the rider who manages to cycle furthest up that hill. To accommodate riders who regard themselves not fit enough to challenge the serious hill-work, yet would like to be part of this awesome experience, a less challenging ‘pink route’ on Days 2 and 3 will be made available which will be substantially shorter than the full route. Trail running Trail running adventurers can come and run either a 6km or 15km on Sunday, 22 September. The route will follow the start of day three, with a few shortcuts, whilst still giving runners a unique experience.

Services All water points will be well positioned and will be well-stocked along the route on all three days – manned by enthusiastic people from the local community. Timekeeping will be handled by the Great-Time team that captured the times and provided an excellent service in the past, which will enable riders to use their times for seeding for other races. Langeberg Link MTB is a Cycling SA sanctioned event and obtained the required Land/Nature Reserve access permits. The riders will be assisted by marshals and well signposted arrows on route, a Sweep vehicle and in addition a medical vehicle to provide medical support. Peak2Peak biokinetics will be providing a sports recovery massages at the event. Entry fees for the three-day event is R1400 per cyclist, and single stages sell at R500 per person per day, and for the kids under 10, R50 per day – provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult. ULTIMATE ONE DAY RIDING EXPERIENCE

This bi-annual fundraising event, which takes place at NH The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on 12 - 13 October 2019, promises to test your fitness and perseverance on a bike. THE500 offers four participating options: The Full Rider (10 x 50km laps), the Lap Rider (cycle one or more laps of 50km each), the 24-Hour Spinning Team and lastly the 24-Hour Solo Spinner. The outside event starts at NH The Lord Charles Hotel, with the route taking riders through Stellenbosch and Kuils River, and back to the hotel. The night laps are partly off-road at Lourensford Wine Estate. Cyclists will stretch themselves to the limit of their abilities to cycle 500km in 24 hours with short breaks every two hours. Concurrently running on the hour, there will be 24 spinning classes of 45 minutes each presented by Virgin Active’s energetic and encouraging instructors at the hotel. Corporates and social teams are invited to book a bike for only R950 and occupy it for 24 hours. Says Stéphan Pieterse, founder of D4D: “THE500 is a fundraising event and we encourage all participants and organisations to help us reach our R1 Million fundraising target for this year’s event. Ride the Karoo is the ultimate one day riding experience in the heart of the Karoo where riders can choose between a 100 miler (160km) or a 50 miler (80km) ride. The weekend is filled with authenticity, presenting Karoo braai, lamb potjie, fresh farm bread, condensedmilk coffee, koeksisters and craft beer. Ride The Karoo’s 100 miler (160km) heads out towards Compassberg on a combination of smooth jeeptracks and district roads. Riders will gradually be going up in elevation followed by a downhill that will most definitely put a huge grin on the face as riders make their way down to the quaint village of Nieu Bethesda. Here they will be greeted by the third and main water point on the day. Here riders will be treated by Aunty Evelyn to ice cold, locally made ginger beer and numerous bites to fuel them for the second half of the ride. As riders head out of Nieu Bethesda to complete the rest of their ride, they enter the Sneeuberg Nature Reserve where numerous wildlife like kudus, wildebeest, zebras and more can be seen. Ride The Karoo’s 50 miler (80km) ride also head out along the same route as the 100 milers, but take a short cut just past water point 1 at about 22km into their ride to join in on the second half of the long route, passing local farms and numerous wildlife scenes along the way. MAYOR BACKS MOTHER CITY’S FIRST MIDDLE DISTANCE TRIATHLON

The City of Cape Town will host its first middle distance triathlon on Sunday, 10 November 2019. CHALLENGECAPETOWN will comprise a 1.9km swim in Big Bay, a 90km cycle with three turning points along the coastal road that will end in the CBD, and a 21km run that will be completed over three laps in the Zonnebloem / District Six precinct. This is one of only a handful point-to-point events in the country, where the start and finish are in two different locations. In an historic moment, the finish stretch of the cycle leg will see athletes sprinting along the iconic Government Avenue in the Company’s Garden - the first cycle race to do so. Situated at the edge of the Company’s Garden and at the foot of Table Mountain, the Cape Town High School sports fields will be transformed into a spectator friendly finish line and race village on Race Day. The 7km run loop will become a hive of activity as spectators and supporters line the streets to watch all the race day action, while athletes will pass some of the City’s historical buildings and iconic landmarks. The City of Cape Town is consistently rated one of the world’s favourite tourism and sporting destinations, and the addition of an international triathlon will cement the City’s reputation as SA’s sports capital.
