The Coronation Double Century, known in the cycling world as the CDC is one of the largest team time trials in the world – a favourite among fun riders. The camaraderie, scenery and the endurance challenge is what draws riders to the event each year. For most recreational cyclists the 202-kilometre loop from Swellendam is the longest and toughest journey on a bike every year. Anyone who’s ever been awarded the coveted Charles Milner Award will know the blood, sweat, tears, not to mention sheer guts, that are spent in pursuit of this renowned accolade that is given to teams when all 12 members cross the finish-line within 15 minutes of each other.

While the first team to get six riders across the line in each category will be crowned champions, the Charles Milner medal goes to each full team of 12 riders which finish inside the allocated 10 hours. It’s a tough one to call this year as most teams make the decision on the day, as the race plays out, whether to shed riders or push for the 12-rider finish. The Coronation Double Century began life as a non-competitive day in the saddle among long-time cycling friends. A Stellenbosch wine farmer, and fanatical cyclist Charles Milner, is traditionally considered the founding father of what has grown into one of the country’s most prestigious, challenging and scenic bike races.

2020 FNB WINES2WHALES ROUTE CHANGE The FNB Wines2Whales Switchback is no simple route reverse. It is a dramatic reimagining of the trails which usually take riders from the winelands to the whales each year. The 2020 FNB Wines2Whales will switchback; leading riders from the whales, in Hermanus, to the wines of Lourensford Wine Estate, over three spectacular three-day stage races.

E-bikes have proved to be a popular and growing trend, offering a wider scope of mountain bikers the opportunity to experience the FNB Wines2Whales route on an easier mode of transport. With the added power of an electric motor helping them along, the E-Bikers will be able to take in the route like never before.

Nadia van Heerden, 28, of Hazyview, captured the world championship title in the female, 25 - 29 age-group at the 2019 Vega IRONMAN® World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on 12 October 2019. Nearly 2,500 athletes were registered to compete in the most iconic one-day endurance event in the world as the 2019 Vega IRONMAN World Championship celebrated its 41st year. IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Group company, celebrated its ever-growing `ohana – a Hawaiian word representing a specially bonded extended family – during the 2019 event as it hosted athletes from 74 countries, regions, and territories around the world. Van Heerden completed the 2019 Vega IRONMAN World Championship event in 09:39:20 (swim: 01:00:15; bike: 05:10:22; run: 03:22:40), beating out the top athletes in her age group. The 2019 field of triathletes tackled the ROKA 2.4-mile ocean swim course in Kailua Bay, followed by the Ventum 112-mile bike ride along the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway from Kailua-Kona to the turnaround in Hawaii, capped with a 26.2-mile HOKA ONE ONE run beginning on Ali’i Drive, where spectators packed the roads, up Palani Road to the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway, before making their way to the infamous The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. Athletes completed their journey to the roar of thousands of spectators as they crossed the historic Ali`i Drive finish line. The Vega IRONMAN World Championship is the ultimate and most iconic one-day test of body, mind and spirit, with approximately 95,000 athletes competing to qualify at more than 40 global IRONMAN events each year. Qualification is already underway for the 2020 IRONMAN World Championship. Van Heerden’s victory at the 2019 Vega IRONMAN World Championship earns her an automatic bid to the 2020 event, where she will have the chance to defend her title.

This year the race started at Paul Cluver with Stage 1 traversing the amazing trails of Paul Cluver and Oak Valley before finishing at Grabouw Country Club. Stage 2 circumnavigated the Eikenhof Dam, with the bike leg including the famous A-Z trails. On Sunday the participants made their way from the Country Club to the outskirts of Somerset West finishing at Idiom Wine Estate. The racing was fierce with Michael Lord taking the overall classification and Christoff van Heerden and Gary Thomas in 2nd and 3rd. In the ladies race Lucy Etherton took the honours with Bianca Silberbauer in 2nd and Robin Bolten in 3rd.Apart from the racing at the sharp end of the field, over 70 triathletes enjoyed the amazing trails and generous hospitality at the race village. “We look forward to next year’s event and entries open 1 February 2020.” For more information visit www.capecrosstri.com

OBERHOLZER GETS A HATRICK & KRUGER TAKES FIRST WIN AT TSOGO SUN AMASHOVA

As winning cyclists, Carla Oberholzer in the ladies and HB Kruger in the men’s elite race, sped down the ‘road of champions’ to victory at this year’s Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic on 20 October, race organisers celebrated several firsts for this year’s race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. While celebrations at the race finish were in full swing - along with live music, rugby world cup matches being screened and some of Durban’s best food and beverage vendors at the Suncoast hospitality area; the atmosphere along the route was just as festive as spectators kept an eye out for the elite men riders competing for the first time on the extended 160km distance. The competition was fierce with the men’s race going down to the wire with a neck-and-neck sprint to the finish between HB Kruger, Chris Jooste, Dylan Girdlestone and Myles Van Musschenbroek. About his victory, the very humble but elated 2019 elite men’s winner said, “The race started off quite hard with the additional 50km distance added on this year we all knew it was going to be quite a tough route, which suited me quite a lot. So I was happy that the route was a bit harder and a bit longer. I am just ecstatic to take the win as a lot of my break away compatriots were super strong so it could have gone anyone’s way. I was happy that I had some extra energy left in my legs to take the sprint and get the top podium spot,” Kruger said at the finish. The 106km ladies race also came down to a nail-biting sprint finish with 2018 champion Carla Oberholzer edging out Jo van de Winkel at a time of 2 hours 48 minutes. “After my two accidents earlier this year it’s been a bit of a hard work to get some sort of form back and luckily the legs were good so I’m very grateful. The ladies race was very positive. It is one of the best tactical races I’ve seen in a while,” Oberholzer explained in her post-victory interview.

As the competitive riders battled it out for a place in the top ten, the ‘spirit of shova’ came alive once more with the presence of hundreds of riders competing in the race to support a worthy cause. The more than 9 000 riders participating and thousands of spectators coming to KwaZulu-Natal for the Tsogo Sun Amashova event highlights sport’s ability to attract visitors to experience what the province has to offer. Although the 35km and 65km races went on uninterrupted by the participating cyclists, due to high heat temperatures on race day a decision was made by race organisers to stop the 106km race around midday.

Excitement is mounting! Thousands upon thousands of South Africans are eagerly enter the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2020, Cape Town’s annual festival on two wheels and the bucket list item that everyone wants to tick off, at least once! Next year, 8 March will be the day when Cape Town invites its residents and visitors to don their Lycra and/or crazy costumes and pedal through some of the most glorious scenery found anywhere in the world – or cheer on those who do. “There are a few things that set the Cape Town Cycle Tour apart,” says David Bellairs, a Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. “The route is incredible – where else can you ride 109km of breath-taking scenery, laughing and enjoying Instagrammable moments and the camaraderie of 34 999 like-minded individuals?

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is excited to announce that e-bikes will be welcomed for the first time this coming year, subject to specific conditions to entry. However, hosting a short course in addition to the traditional 109km route is proving extremely complex. The team at Cape Town Cycle Tour, together with key stakeholders including the City of Cape Town, has invested considerable time and effort in planning for two world-class events within the City and surrounds. Safety, experience and quality of the event cannot be compromised, and disruption and inconvenience to the residents of the City of Cape Town must be minimised. This process can’t be rushed and the decision has been taken to postpone the short route option until 2021 to allow for further planning and judicious preparation. “We know that there will be some disappointment around this decision – we’re disappointed too,” says Bellairs. “But as always, the safety of participants comes first. We hope to have good news next year regarding the short course for 2021. All stakesholders will continue working to make this possible.”

(CONTINUE FROM PAGE 1) In the 2018 edition of The Coronation Double Century the winners in both men’s and women’s categories kept all their riders together for most of the distance - which gave them a huge advantage over the rest of the field. The composite team of Active Bodies put a master class in long-distance team-trialling to convincingly defend their Coronation Double Century title in 2018. While most of the other contending teams lost many of their riders early on Active Bodies kept all 12 together for most of the route, losing only a few riders in the final 20kms for a truly convincing victory. The women’s category winners, STS/Specialized was ahead at every time check and, much like Active Bodies, kept all their riders together for most of the distance. Also in attendance in 2018 were three all-star invitational teams from Breitling, including the likes of Vincenzo Nibali, multiple mountain bike World Cup champion, Nino Schurter, multiple Ironman World Champion, Daniela Ryf and Jan Frodeno, current Ironman 70.3 World Champ among others. The Coronation Double Century takes place on Saturday, 23 November 2019 with teams lining up in Swellendam and racing via Suurbraak, the Tradouw Pass and Op de Tradouw, ascent towards Montagu and then passes Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale, while returning via the R317 to Swellendam.

GROWING EVENTS IN THE CAPE WINELANDS The competition calls for creative and exciting ideas which could stimulate the growth of the event and in turn increase positive socio-economic and environmental impacts within the host town. The Capacitation and Skills Programme stems from the Integrated Events Strategy for Cape Town and the Western Cape. It facilitates projects aimed at event organisers focusing on capacitation, research and impact assessments and include; an annual Events Incubation Conference, standardising event impact assessment methodologies, facilitating on-site/one-on-one learning opportunities between emerging and established event organisers and the Masterclass series. All of these projects address the so-called ‘softer end’ of hosting events but is integral in gaining a better understanding of the sector. Government’s efforts go beyond just financial support as it also looks at addressing challenges, celebrating successes and creating a conducive environment for the events sector to thrive. The fifth annual Events Incubation Conference will be taking place in Paarl on 14 November 2019 with the aim of empowering local event organisers to grow the sector in the Cape Winelands District and the Western Cape. Annually the Western Cape plays host to numerous events ranging from sport, leisure, business, culinary and lifestyle, amongst others. The positive impact these events bring to the Province have been recognised and the Integrated Events Strategy identifies key projects to grow the sector over the next 15 years. As part of this, the Western Cape Government looks to support prospective public events in the Province by inviting event organisers to submit proposals to stand in line to win R 50 000.00 towards hosting their event.

The Events Incubation Conference is an annual event bringing together event specialists from around the world to share and learn from each other on a oneon-one basis. Event organisers, sponsors, the public sector, service providers and suppliers are just some of the conference participants who have attended. By tapping into our very own event expertise in the Western Cape, we aim to capacitate emerging event organisers to improve the quality of events we offer as a destination. The inaugural conference was held in 2015 and attendee numbers have grown annually. The programme is also tailor-made to address some of the pressing event issues facing the industry at the time. Topics to be discussed include: Events & tourism, Opportunities for growing & leveraging the event sector, Events rejuvenation, and the annual Events Pitching Competition. PPA STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER RAISES AWARENESS IN KHAYELITSHA As part of the mandate to keep cyclists safe on the roads throughout South Africa, the Pedal Power Association (PPA) is hosting its seventh safe cycling awareness ride for the year, this time in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Saturday, 9 November at 10H00. The aim is to make drivers aware of the danger’s cyclists face daily by spreading the message that space saves lives. We will also hand out safe cycling stickers to motorists on route. The ride starts from the Thembelihle High School parking area and will follow a 13km route back to the start venue. “We are calling on local cyclists to please participate in the ride,” says CEO of the PPA Robert Vogel. It’s a tragic fact that hit-and-run incidents have become a common phenomenon in South Africa with few, if any, of the drivers being prosecuted, fined or jailed. As legal road users, cyclists have the right to use the roads,” explains Vogel. Since 2011, the organisation has invested millions in various safe cycling campaigns to secure safer roads and awareness for cyclists, and to advocate mutual tolerance and respect amongst road users. In 2014, the PPA initiated the “Stay Wider of the Rider” campaign after a Western Cape law was promulgated in 2013 making it compulsory for drivers to pass cyclists with a berth of at least 1m. It now needs your help in pushing for this to become a national law in South Africa.

WESGRO CELEBRATES TRANSPORT MONTH THROUGH AN E-BIKE ADVENTURE IN THE WC

October was Transport Month; a movement led by the Department of Transport in the Western Cape to raise awareness of the vital role transport plays towards the economy. It also intends to drive conversation with civic society and business in finding ways of providing a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system for the country. While transport month is quite a serious topic, there were many fun activities which revolve around transport, including cycling. To celebrate this, Wesgro along with Cape Cycle Routes - a Western Cape Government initiative - and Vivid Bike Tours recently hosted a group of media for three-day e-biking ride along the Cederberg Circuit.

Cederberg is one of the official routes within the Cape Cycle Routes Network. The accessibility of these routes are essential; however, even for an advanced rider, a 247km bike ride may not be a walk in the park. To encourage the general public to explore these routes, local tour operators have made an e-bike option available to anyone looking to ride this route regardless of their fitness level. What & where is Holla Trails? - Holla Trails is a mountain bike and trail run park situated 5km west of Ballito, near Compensation in Kwazulu-Natal. Why was Holla Trails started and when was it launched? - Holla Trails started in 2009, when Nic Jordan, a keen local mountain biker and farmer did regular rides with friends in and around the beautiful farms and areas of the North Coast, Ballito. As more people enjoyed the riding, so the local farmers felt they could only support the riding if some formal controls were put in place, mainly because of liability for farmers when riders traversed private land. Nic decided to start Holla Trails with the selling of permits, cutting and marking trails and importantly ensuring the farmers were indemnified. Ten years later, the result is what Holla Trails believes is the largest formal trail network in the country.

The bi-annual fundraising event, Distance for Difference (D4D) THE500 took place at NH The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West from 12 – 13 October 2019, testing riders fitness and perseverance on a bike. How does one sum up an event filled with so many highlights and very special moments? “The fourth edition, hosted at NH The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, was indeed a very special one.” “To say it was a grand, overwhelming, joyous, humorous, remarkable, awe-inspiring, humbling, challenging, and very very satisfying experience, would perhaps

just touch the outer edges of a complete description of the event,” said Stéphan Pieterse, Founder of DFD. At the 24-hr spinning challenge inside the hotel, members and employees from more than 20 groups and organisations had a lot of fun, occupying their spinning bikes for one or more of the 24 x 45 minute sessions. These were energetically lead by a number of wonderful instructors who constantly encouraged everyone to get out of their comfort zones, to smile more and to sweat more. At the same time there were six remarkable individuals attempting to spin for all 24 sessions! Five of them in fact did! Meanwhile, on the hilly tar roads between Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Kuilsrivier and on the dusty ones of Lourensford Estate, 19 cyclists attempted to cycle 500 km in 24 hours! It was warm. It was cold. It was dusty. It was windy - and it was extremely tiring! After 23 hours 55 minutes and 6,474 meters of elevation gain, a bunch of new friends who shared something very special, crossed the finish line together with the famous “Chariots of Fire” triggering more than just a few tears! Eleven of them managed to ride all 500 km! A “tunnel of love” was formed by all the spinners, family members and friends and the cyclists were welcomed back into the Grand Ballroom with more tears flowing. The MC, Colin Heckroodt, also deserves a medal! For 24 hours he was like an energiser bunny, encouraging the spinners and cyclists to keep going, informing the crowd of the reason behind it all, sharing the stories from the beneficiaries who benefit from the work of D4D.” “At the time of writing this, our fundraising total stood just shy of R600,000. Yes, still some way off the R1 Million target, but an amount that will have a noticeable impact on the lives of many vulnerable children,” Pieterse concluded.

Entries have opened for the popular Herald Cycle Tour 2020 – by far the most scenic race in the Eastern Cape and one of the top classic cycle events in South Africa. Whether it is the fast-paced coastal scenes during the Road Race from Pollok Beach in Port Elizabeth or the mountain trails of Addo during the Mountain Bike Challenge – the country’s top professional riders, as well as leisure riders of all ages, will be treated to the spectacular natural beauty of the province. The Herald Cycle Tour will take place over two weekends - with the Mountain Bike Challenge on 16 February 2020 at the Addo Polo Club and the Road Race on 23 February in Port Elizabeth. The Herald Cycle Tour is an annual event in the professional cyclists’ calendar and is known by the country’s top riders as a challenging platform to compete in – which is well-organised and fun. Professional cyclist and coach Nolan Hoffmann, who was placed first in the Men’s 106km Classic Road Race in this year’s race, said he ranks the Herald Cycle Tour as one of the top five races in South Africa. Tiffany Keep raced in Port Elizabeth for the first-time in 2019, when she won the Women’s 106km Classic Road Race of the Herald Cycle Tour. The races are open to not only professional cyclists, but leisure riders of all ages and an event the entire family can participate in. The Road Race in Port Elizabeth is open to riders over 12 years, while the Mountain Bike Challenge in Addo will include a 5km Kiddies Ride and 50m Toddlers Dash.

LEAD THE WAY IN LORRAINE CYCLE TOUR Brad Gouveris’s late decision to enter the Lorraine Cycle Tour paid dividends when he finished top of the podium in the 80km feature race in Port Elizabeth. The 21-year-old from PE, riding for Action Cycles, edged Warwick Renard in the sprint for the line to add a second title to his maiden triumph in 2017.Gouveris, who was followed home by Renard and Ceajay Bosman, said he only made a decision the previous afternoon to compete in the event.

The women’s event was won for the 19th time by race ambassador and defending champion Anriette Schoeman (Africa Silks-Bestmed), who shrugged off a cold to finish well ahead of her rivals. The 42-year-old Schoeman was able to continue her stranglehold on the women’s title. She crossed the line finishing ahead of Juanita MacKenzie and Lauren Coleman.

WHY ALL KIDS SHOULD BE RIDING BIKES From the first toddler push-bike to learning to ride on a tricycle, to the independence of cycling to a friend’s house - kids and bikes have long gone hand in hand. Regular cycling helps with the development of leg muscles, core strength and general fitness. It also allows children to practise their fine and gross motor skills, co-ordination and balance, all skills that will help them as they grow into young adults. Cycling also helps to improve children’s spatial awareness and navigational and observation skills. Whether they are dodging potholes, negotiating rough off-road terrain or finding their way to a friend’s house, they are learning and developing essential life skills along the way. But the benefits are more than merely physical. Studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise like riding stimulates neurons and improves the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the brain. This in turn increases energy levels and cognitive functioning, including social and creative skills. The benefits are immediate. Research conducted in Denmark recently studied almost 20 000 children between the ages of 5 and 19. It concluded that cycling to school increases concentration during school hours, with the heightened concentration still evident four hours after the cycle to school. Some have taken this correlation even further and the last few years have seen a number of studies around the benefits of cycling on children with ADHD. Research applying physical exercise as an alternative treatment for ADHD has consistently produced positive results. In 2012, Specialized Bikes and RTSG Neuroscience spent five days a week for a month measuring the effects of cycling in two groups of children with ADHD (or displaying ADHD-like symptoms). The researchers concluded after the study that cycling is highly beneficial for children with ADHD, improving attention, mood, processing of information, emotional intelligence and cognitive performance.

Even more impressive is that cycling to school isn’t a chore for kids – 87% of the subjects continued with the cycling programme once the study had ended. Cycling doesn’t need to be a skill kids learn and then tire of – it can become a daily way of life and lead to a better functioning body and mind, and a happier, healthier childhood. SPUR SCHOOLS MTB LEAGUE CONTINUES TO GROW

The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League (SSMTBL), now in its eleventh year, is growing from strength to strength reaching new record proportions during the 2019 season with 18 757 riders competing in 57 events across South Africa. According to founder and co-ordinator, Meurant Botha of Amarider, the league is achieving its goal of getting kids on bikes. “The support of national and provincial Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA) structures, regional co-ordinators, parents and teachers has been a key factor in the growth of the league and achieving our aim of getting kids to ride and race bikes. With the continuous involvement of Spur as founding sponsor, we have managed to grow the league from an initial 900 to nearly 19 000 riders,” says Botha.

Botha further ascribes the success of the SSMTBL to the ongoing development of new mountain biking tracks around the country in an effort to take the sport to the people with a strong focus on schools. Currently 60% of all SSMTBL events are being hosted on school grounds. “It is important to establish good quality tracks, especially in outlying areas where travelling long distances to compete remains a problem for many kids. This was also a consideration when we decided to relocate the finals to Wagpos High School just outside of Brits this year. With the finals done and dusted, Wagpos inherits a custom built track where their riders can train and improve their skills,” states Botha. The SSMTBL is in essence a grassroots cycling development program and will work closely with governing body Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA) - an associate member of Cycling South Africa - going forward to further grow the organisation and assist with initiatives geared to fully develop mountain biking as a school sport. “The fact that school teams are growing bears testimony to the fact that the sport is growing. Garsfontein for example started with three riders and now have a school team of more than 70 riders winning a national event. Considering that more than 80 schools were represented at the SSMTBL finals is a good indication that the league has the potential to explode.”

The 2019 SSMTBL finals also saw the introduction of an updated rule set to manage and govern the competition with the introduction of a consequence matrix to enable officials in making fair decisions in an environment that is highly charged with adrenaline, stress and emotion. In addition all competitors signed the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport “I Play Fair Say NO! to Doping” pledge at the event. According to SSMTBL ambassador, Alan Hatherly South Africa has one of the most solid and structured cross country schools leagues in the world that provides an unparalleled platform for kids to race on following a proper qualification process. “The sport is clearly healthy and growing, but what I find most inspirational is the fact that the kids are clearly enjoying the event, making friends and showing good sportsmanship. As an Ambassador to the league I got to do provincial rounds and assisted with skills training and it is great to see how kids developed this past year,” states Hatherly. DAVID HIGGS SUPPORTS YOUNG DIEPSLOOT CHEF It wasn’t long before Zitha joined him at his popular high-end restaurant Marble, where he now has a position as one of the leading chefs. Higgs continues to support Zitha’s interest in cycling, and courtesy of Dryland Event Management, gave Zitha the opportunity to join him at the Cape Pioneer Trek this year. “Methoa is one of the guys that have grown incredibly over the past few years, from a youngster that started at the bottom to one of the leading chefs in the kitchen. We both still have a great love for cycling, and for him to ride the Cape Pioneer was the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Higgs.

Award-winning chef David Higgs took on the journey of a lifetime recently. The Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek presented by Biogen is a seven-day stage race that takes riders from the Mossel Bay coastline into the heart of the Klein Karoo. While many riders used the event as an opportunity to earn valuable UCI points, Higgs took his place at the start line for a different reason. The chef has built up a strong reputation in South Africa for his impressive cooking skills, but something that has not been as widely publicized is his passion for cycling and heart for his local cycling community. Through a nutrition education initiative called Food Cycle, Higgs has developed a close relationship with riders from the Diepsloot Mountain Biking Academy. He uses Food Cycle as a platform to identify cyclists who, like him, have a passion for cooking. This is how he stumbled across the path of Methoa Zitha in 2016 - a young rider who showed tremendous talent in the kitchen.

UBHEJANE XTREME Shortly after midnight on a Saturday early in December 2015 a tough group of mountain bikers left Hillcrest outside Durban at the start of a 330km one-day odyssey ride to Hluhluwe game reserve in the north of KwaZulu-Natal. It turned into a gruelling ride, with pacing and teamwork essential to getting the group to the gate at Hluhluwe, where the fabled bronze rhino statue was the scene of a team photo that every one of those pioneers has a treasured place for. The rhino tells the story behind this ride. The uBhejane Xtreme was designed as a vehicle to raise money for two organisations that are right at the forefront of the fight against rhino poaching – Project Rhino and Helping Rhinos.

After what was one of the most memorable experiences of his life, Zitha commented: “Cycling and cooking help me to have a better life – my best life. I’ve become a different person and want to helped other people to see their future in the correct way. David Higgs is like a father to me, and what I’ve learnt alot from him and this has grown me.”

THE COWS - MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO CHILDREN WITH CANCER

The Cows were started in 2008 by a group of eight enthusiastic cyclists keen to make a difference and raise funds for the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa. Cordi van Niekerk was one of the founder members and joined Kerrin and Grant Bain in cycling the 947 Cycle Challenge in memory of their daughter, Jessica, who had recently died from cancer at just 20 months old. As CHOC had played a significant role in the Bain family’s life in the last few weeks of Jessica’s life, specifically with palliative care and emotional support, the decision was to make CHOC the beneficiary of their quest. They decided to don cow suits and succeeded in raising R230 000. In 2009, the herd gained momentum and grew to 140 energetic cows. Just two years later the herd numbered a staggering 350 cows all riding for a purpose. Armed with the ‘Love Living Life’ slogan and a healthy dose of enthusiasm, the herd has enjoyed much success and acclaim.

Mike Tippett, manager of The Sports Trust commented that the event was awesome and that the caliber of international cyclists and the three pro teams really raised the standard of this event, while development cyclists rose to the challenge.

Since the inaugural ride the event has grown to include a 250km ride from the Umvoti Toll Plaza called the Short Horn (the full ride is now called the Long Horn), a 100km ride (the Baby Horn) that starts in Empangeni, and the Orphan 31km ride from the Hluhluwe gate to the Hilltop Camp that marks the end of the ride. In 2018 the race expanded to include a new three day ride that covers the full 330km route in roughly equal, bite-sized chunks.

One of South Africa’s most decorated adventurers and philanthropists Sibusiso Vilane will return to the uBhejaneX MTB Challenge from 5 - 7 December 2019 and aims to raise as much money as possible to fight rhino poaching. With such a busy schedule Vilane has made sure that he has managed to keep a spot free for the event and is looking forward to the camaraderie of what a multi-day event can bring. Each rider pays a basic donation of R5000, which includes a generous hamper kit and the now-famous uBhejaneX jersey, after which each rider pushes hard for personal pledges and donations. GREAT TURNOUT AT 2019 JAVA MTB CHALLENGE

Amazing support was shown by the participants who took part in the seventh annual Java MTB Challenge. Since its inception seven years ago the race has managed to pay out more than R660 000 to beneficiaries, and in doing so give back to the local community.

LORMAR ENDURANCE MTB TOUR Five hundred visitors from all over South Africa and even Great Brittan visited Fairview farm in the heart of the Karoo to ride their mountain bikes over the course of three days and experiencing local hospitality at its best!

Beneficiaries include Robertson High School, Robertson Primary School, Robertson Preparatory School, Wakkerstroom-Wes Rural School, Jakes Gerwel Educational Trust, Herberg Children’s Home and Bonnievale Vryburgers. This year, development riders and runners, consisting of kids from disadvantaged areas in the community, were hosted at the event free of charge. Entrants grew to 1209 from last year’s 918 with the 6km family/kiddies fun ride and the 10km Trail Run Turning attracting the largest number of entrants. As per Java tradition, all participants were rewarded with medals and goodie-bags upon crossing the finish line, as well as standing a chance of winning awesome prizes in the Java lucky draw. 2019 saw two back-to-back mountain bike tours namely the FarmTrail Tour from 27-29 September and the SheepTrail Tour from 4-6 October. Both tours consisted of the same routes and activities. Day one started with purebred Arabian horses galloping past participants as an opening ceremony followed by a 21km night ride into the Karoo sunset. Riders were welcomed back to a Karoo braai and live entertainment. Day two consisted of 58km through neighbouring farms, one of which G.A. Watermeyer grew up in, a water point stop at an 1800 old farm house, Alphen and crossing through the beautiful poplar tree forest. There’s also a shorter version, the Lormar Mini that consisted of 28km. Participants were pleasantly surprised when issued with a returnable Java specific race number for 2019’s event. All pre-entered participants were seeded according to their SA Seeding Index and all results will be submitted to SA Seeding to be incorporated with their national seeding profile. Without the support of the sponsors the Java MTB Challenge would not be able to take place. SA MOUNTAIN BIKE SENSATION IKE KLAASSEN TALKS AUDI NINES

Participants were welcomed back to delicious Karan Beef prego steaks prepared to perfection. The afternoon consisted of a tractor cruise and nibbles of locally prepared boerewors and “skaapstertjies”. Evenings at Lormar consisted of a history talk about the area and a fun and interactive prize giving and brilliant live entertainment. Day three again headed through a couple of neighbouring farms including Leopardsvlei with its beautiful poplar forest singletrack over 56km. The Lormar Mini also passed through Leopardsvlei’s poplar forest but over a shorter 30km course. Water points at Lormar exceed expectations offering a wide variety of cooked potatoes to koeksisters and even ice-cold beers, while curry mince vetkoek was served for lunch. Participants that wanted to linger a little longer in the Karoo enjoyed another night on Fairview farm concluding an Ultimate Karoo Experience! The Lormar Endurance MTB Tour’s main goal is to create awareness of the spectacular Karoo, its people and to provide participants with true “platteland” hospitality! The Tour benefits the local community in many ways. Some interesting statistics: 2700 koeksisters were made, 1200 lamb chops, 1000 Karan Beef steaks,1500 farmhouse breakfast eggs and 1300 cups of moerkoffie & condensemilk were prepared . The tour provides more than 2000 man-hours of work for the local community.

Nearly 4,000 spectators thronged to the Ellweiler stone quarry near Birkenfeld, Germany in September to watch the exciting conclusion of The Audi Nines MTB 2019. The unique mountain bike event gathered a number of the world’s best mountain bikers from 11 nations to this unconventional location for a week of photo and video shoots on spectacular features, which concluded with an explosive finish well worthy of the event series’ 25th edition. Audi Nines is a mountain bike as well as a ski event. The mountain bike event is in summer, and the ski tournament is in winter. Ike Klaassen, 15-year-old South African Mountain Bike sensation, was one of the youngest riders to be invited to compete in the Audi Nines, and had quite an adventure in Germany. “It is a great event, with an insane sponsor who comes with a crazy budget in Audi, which is pretty sick for a MTB event. The jumps are crazy and the riders get insane luxury, so it’s probably like the best experience ever,” says Ike. “I got invited because the contest organiser Nico Zacek knew who I was. I think he was commentating at an event and saw me riding. Then Monster Energy sent through a rider’s shortlist, and I somehow luckily got picked,” he continues. “It was a freeriding event, so there were no races and no pressure. I was the youngest, but it was sick to be there either way. I didn’t really win anything, but I won some trophies and stuff. I won Man Of The Day one day which was pretty cool. At the event they didn’t hand out prize money, but they put us up in fancy houses, and we ate insane food for the whole week.” “The raddest thing was just riding with everyone in general. Then the backflip to dirt was pretty crazy. That jump was like 15 metres or something crazy and super high,” Ike concludes.

The inaugural GO!Durban100 MTB race took place on Sunday, 8th September, successfully attracting 400 riders to participate in the new initiative by GO!Durban and eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) to promote active mobility in Durban. “The GO!Durban100 is a flagship event showcasing the beauty of Durban’s hidden gems and allowing citizens to enjoy their surroundings by leading a healthy, active lifestyle,” says Thami Manyathi, Head of ETA.

The event included the signature 100km race starting at Giba Gorge MTB Park, and 50km (Inanda) and 20km (KwaDabeka) options for mountain bike enthusiasts of all skill levels. Riders experienced pristine single track, river crossings, and magnificent scenery through the Green Corridors trail network. Stuart Marais took the win in a sprint finish with Andrew Hill and Tyronne White. The women’s race was won by Hayley Smith. Due to environmental sustainability efforts, including an extensive clean-up project to collect 2 tonnes of litter and plastic along the route by trail workers and community members, the event was certified by Planet Protector as an Earth-friendly sports event. The race also integrated other key GO!Durban partners, such as the MOJA Cruise taxi incentive programme which offered a complimentary shuttle service for 100km riders from Blue Lagoon to the start at Giba Gorge; as well as the GO!Durban Cycle Academy - the youth development programme central to ETA’s active mobility initiatives. The GO!Durban100 has elevated the standard of mountain bike events in Durban and we look forward to a bigger and better race in 2020!” concludes Manyathi.
