As South Africa and the world get set for the opening leg of the 2018 UCI World Cup in Stellenbosch on 10 March 2018 the final touches have been put on a course that has been described as a world-class setting for world-class athletes, with the added bonus of South African flair. The 4.3km course on the slopes of the famous Coetzenburg mountain trails attached to the Stellenbosch University has been designed to challenge the world’s best athletes and allow fans an up-close-and-personal view of the action.

With names such as “Puff Adder”, “Varsity Drop Out”, “Wine Barrel” and “Howzit”, course designer, Nick Floros, and builder, Corrie Muller, have ensured the first cross country race of the season will give the competitors a very African welcome to the season. Alan Hatherly, the South African under-23 star who took silver in the UCI World Championships in Cairns in September, has ridden the course numerous times and is looking forward to taking his 2017 form into his first World Cup in his home country.

His fellow Swiss and Stellenbosch resident, Christoph Sauser, five-time winner of the Absa Cape Epic and former World Cup winner, praised the Floros-Mulder creation. Floros designed the course for the 2016 Rio Olympics, while Muller, a local dentist by profession, has a reputation as a top trail builder in the region.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2018 SA NATIONAL ROAD & TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Photo: SA National Road & Time Trial Championships 2017, Wellington - Photo Credit: Double ST

Western Cape Cycling will be hosting the 2018 SA National Road and Time Trial Championships in the heart of the Little Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, one of the ten most popular tourist venues in South Africa. Oudtshoorn is well-known for the Safari and Highate Ostrich Farms, Cango Caves, Cango Wildlife Ranch, Game farms, Meerkat Magic tours and many more activities.

The South African National Road Championships is the blue ribbon event for each cycling discipline and is held each year. The main attraction at the 2018 SA National Road and Time Trial Championships will be the Elite, U/23 and Junior men’s and woman’s races that will take place on Saturday, 10 February 2018.

The event will be organized by Eden Cycling, on behalf of Western Cape Cycling.

Cross country racing is extremely spectator friendly, with riders completing several laps in races that last from 90 minutes to almost two hours. This allows fans to stay in touch with every second of the action as the likes of fivetime World Champion Nino Schurter, the Swiss superstar who sees Stellenbosch as his second home, seeks to defend the World Cup title he won in 2017. Schurter dominated 2017, winning every one of the six legs of the World Cup, and topping his season off with the World Champs win in Cairns, Australia.

Deadline 12th each month

“It’s a World Cup track, and it lives up to that with brutal climbs and challenging technical descents,” said Hathlerly. “The course flow stays quite close to the centre hub, which will really allow the spectators to enjoy every moment of the action. It’s going to be even tougher in March with the summer heat and dusty conditions but I couldn’t be any more excited to get out there and race.”

The course will have 180m of climbing per lap with the technical sections; from the steep, switch-back climb of the Puff Adder from the second lap onwards, the tricky drop-out of the Varsity Dropout, the deep gully of the Wine Barrel, the Howzit, a twofoot drop-off on the apex of a descending corner, Khoi Spirit descent and the delicate skills needed for Pickup Sticks, showing off the talents of the world’s best riders. For South Africa’s top women rider, Mariske Strauss, the Stellenbosch World Cup will be a return to her old stomping grounds. “It’s going to be so special to race next to my old faculty at Coetzenburg, and bring the world of XCO racing to the local community,” said Strauss. “It is a top-class course for top-class athletes. We must give massive thanks to the Absa Cape Epic team and Stellenbosch University for making the South African riders dream come true. “The Wine barrel is amazing. It’s nice and steep and looks way more intense than it actually is but that’s what we need. It’s super impressive for the spectators to watch, and we as riders can still race it.” The venue and course at Coetzenberg offers spectators a variety of options when it comes to viewing the days racing, whether it is on the course, the grandstands on the finish line or with an ice cold frosty in the chill zone. The event is a perfect day out for the whole family, and children have a host of activities they can participate in a safe and secure environment.

Boost for SA Cycling at Tour Down Under South African cycling was riding high at the Down Under in Australia recently with great success for both Daryl Impey and Nicholas Dlamini. Two-time Olympian Daryl Impey was the overall winner of the Santos Tour Down after the final 90-kilometre stage which finished in Adelaide. Impey became the first South African in history to win the Australian WorldTour race. When you look back at the successes of Mitchelton-SCOTT over the past six seasons, Impey features as an invaluable teammate in many of them – across all terrains. A changing of the guard in the Australian outfit has opened up the door to more personal success for Impey in 2018, and the South African has grabbed it with two hands in his debut race for the season - The Tour Down Under victory the biggest of his career. The final day’s action saw the stage being held over 20 laps in the Adelaide centre. All 33-year-old Mitchelton-Scott rider had to do was finish in the peloton to secure the overall victory on a countback from Richie Porte (BMC Racing). ‟Coming into the race I didn’t expect to win it but sometimes the stars line up and everything goes well,” Impey told Associated Press after his biggest victory yet. Impey said the final stage had been ‘pretty hectic’ as a number of riders battled to improve their overall finishing positions. “I’ve been in this position before with Simon (Gerrans), trying to protect the jersey for him, but it’s definitely more nerve-wracking when you’ve got the jersey yourself,” he said. The Santos Tour Down was Impey’s first win on the World Tour.

He won the 2009 Tour of Turkey and the 2014 Tour of Alberta. He also won a stage of the Tour De France and wore the yellow jersey for two stages in 2013. For Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka going into the final stage was all about conserving the 3rd place overall of TomJelte Slagter and ensuring Nicholas Dlamini finished safely in the bunch to be crowned King of the Mountains. There was more joy when Nicholas Dlamini won the King of the Mountains competition in only his first season on the World Tour. Dlamini won the King of the Mountains competition with 48 points, 12 clear of seasoned Aussie rider Porte of the BMC Racing Team.

‘It has been a great week for the entire team, everyone did what they needed to. I’m delighted to win my first leaders jersey in my first World Tour race,” said Dlamini. Africa’s cycling Team, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka can be more than pleased with their efforts at the opening World Tour race of the season. The team also placed second in the team standings. Impey said the win, combined with Dlamini’s effort in taking the King of the Mountain title, was a boost for South African cycling.

Water Strategy for Cape Town Cycle Tour 2018 “We will also be asking all participants traveling to Cape Town to please support us in our efforts to conserve water during their stay in the Mother City. All participants will receive communications prior to the event to ensure that they fully understand the severity of the crisis and we will provide practical tips on how they can do their part,” says Bellairs. Eliminating the event’s reliance on municipal drinking water will be achieved through a variety of strategies and solutions including: The use of grey water, the use of de-salinated water, spring water brought in from outside the City of Cape Town, chemical toilets & hand sanitisers, and no shower facilities will be provided. As an event that has always prided itself on its proactive and responsible approach to environmental matters, we will do everything possible to ensure that our events’ water footprint has a negligible impact on our precious water resource – while still delivering a world-class event. Photo Credit: Cape Town Cycle Tour

Rumours that the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour has been postponed or cancelled as a result of the severe water shortages in the Western Cape, are unfounded and not true, says Cape Town Cycle Tour Director David Bellairs. “The Cape Town Cycle Tour Management Team has been working tirelessly over the last year, looking at ways to ensure this iconic event can take place. A comprehensive plan is in place with all our suppliers and service providers to ensure that we reduce our reliance and impact on the municipal water supply to as close to 0% as possible. We believe this is achievable and are making every effort to meet this goal.”

The entire net surplus of the Cycle Tour is distributed to the Rotary Club of Claremont and the Pedal Power Association. “The cost of the water strategy will mean that the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s contribution to charity will possibly be slightly less in 2018,” says Bellairs. “But we feel strongly that the event must go ahead, as many of these charities rely on this income for their projects, not to mention the significant positive economic impact the Cycle Tour has for the city and the province.” The Cape Town Cycle Tour #40take2 will be staged on 11 March 2018, with a new Start at the Grand Parade Precinct. For more information visit www.capetowncycletour.com

Top Riders Line-Up For Herald Continental Cycle Tour There will be yet another strong lineup of elite riders gunning for top honors in this year’s Herald Continental Cycle Tour. Nolan Hoffman, of Team BCX, will return to defend his 106km Classic title, while Port Elizabeth’s own, Anriette Schoeman, will look to retain both her 80km mountain bike and 106km road race titles. KwaZulu Natal’s Andrew Hill will be keen for another 80km victory on the Addo trails. Team Alfa Bodyworks/Giant manager Hannes van der Walt, previously manager of Team Giant said his team enjoy racing in Port Elizabeth and they always get good results there. “It is probably the most well organised race in the country,” he said. “We love coming to this race and being part of its history. It's one of the big races to win in South Africa!” Van der Walt said they had a great experience this year and were treated like real professionals. “The food and accommodation could not have been better. Staying at the Radisson Blu made logistics easy. It’s great to walk out of the hotel to the start and finish line.” Team Alfa Bodyworks/Giant are looking forward to the event, and maybe improving their third place finish [Rohan du Plooy in the 106km Classic] with a win.

Hoffman considers the Cycle Tour to be a home ground race because of all the support he gets from the PE crowd and he hopes to be in winning form to make it five victories in a row. The race organisers really looked after all the teams well by putting them up in the same hotel. It gives you a real feeling of a European event.

The Herald Continental Cycle Tour is close to her heart, says Schoeman, because she loves the Eastern Cape and Port Elizabeth. Being the biggest cycling event in the Eastern Cape, she said she is proud to be part of the race that boasts the beautiful and scenic roads in this part of the world, as well as the incredible hospitality and history of this iconic event.

“The hospitality and warmness of the people behind the scenes at last year’s event was world class. Everything about the pre-event lead-up, the hospitality at Zuurberg, and race day was world class and seamless. There aren’t many race organising committees who put that much effort into making the stay great,” Andrew Hill said.

“I did the MTB event for the first time last year and I absolutely loved it,” Splitting the MTB and road races over two weekends made it possible to be competitive in both events, and being in February makes it an ideal event to prepare for the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March”, Schoeman said.

The MTB races will take place on 18 February at the Addo Polo Club, the Corporate Team Challenge at Pollok Beach on 24 February and the 106km Classic on 25 February 2018 at Pollok Beach. For more information visit www.heraldcycletour.co.za

Attakwas Extreme 2018 - One For The Record Books PYGA Euro Steel’s Matthys Beukes broke the South African drought while Ariane Lüthi added a historic sixth Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme to her palmarès on a wet Saturday, 20 January 2018. The elite men’s podium was filled by Tim Bohme and Philip Buys, while Lüthi was joined on the women’s podium by Jennie Stenerhag and Sabine Spitz. The twelfth edition of the race, best known for producing extreme heat and challenging riding conditions, was by no means an easy one – though many of the riders would have welcomed the cooler than usual conditions. The race started under clear skies at Chandelier Game Farm, outside Oudtshoorn, but finished in unseasonal summer rains at Pine Creek Resort, in Groot Brak River. The cool conditions which prevailed in the early phases of the race, before the riders entered the Attakwaskloof Nature Reserve, allowed for fast paced racing in the elite men’s race. The PYGA Euro Steel duo were the main protagonists leading up to the King of the Mountain climb. Gert Heyns, DSV, helped Beukes and Buys with the paces making duties. Heyns was first over the summit of the Attakwas, but punctured soon thereafter in a tricky section which was to affect the women’s race too. Beukes forged ahead on his own, gradually extending his lead to three minutes and forty seconds at the 85 kilometre mark and a full nine minutes by the finish. Buys remained in second position until the 85km mark when the Team Bulls rider, Bohme, caught him. Buys completed the podium making it a first and third for PYGA Euro Steel. The women’s race started with a tactical battle of cat and mouse between the leading contenders. A mechanical forced Carmen Buchacher out of the lead group. Reaching the first feed zone at the forty six kilometre mark Ariane Lüthi lead a group which included Robyn de Groot, Sabine Spitz, Jennie Stenerhag, Candice Lill and Yolande de Villiers. Spitz then drove the pace on the Queen of the Mountain climb and one-by-one the bunch was whittled down until only Lüthi followed Spitz’s wheel and Stenerhag, though not able to stay in touching distance kept the leaders in sight.

Spitz claimed the Queen of the Mountain prize, but then had a double flat. Lüthi revealed upon being asked where the decisive move was made. With a gap established she relied on all her years of Attakwas Extreme experience to race to victory. “It was so lonely. I just time trialed all the way from water point three (at the 65 kilometre mark) to the finish”, she elaborated. The past two years have been the leanest in terms of victories in Lüthi’s career, which makes the 2018 Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme win all the sweeter. The 2018 Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme was certainly one for the record books. Not only was this the largest ever field of starters, but the rain which soaked the course made it the wettest Attakwas in the event’s twelve year history; and with Lüthi winning her sixth race and Beukes becoming the first South African winner since he last won the race in 2012 it live fondly in the memories of the victors in particular for many years to come.

TRANSCAPE MTB ENCOUNTER SET TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Now in its fourth year, the race is an ideal opportunity to generate funds for people in need. Race founder Lenore Collett says raising money for charity has become an integral part of the race and the organisers will continue those efforts. “This year we are focusing on raising funds for Africa Foundation, an organisation I have been involved with for 10 years and which is very close to my heart,” she said. The organisation’s main objective is to empower the communities that surround their reserves by building schools, installing enviro toilets and create bursary programmes for learners. Conservation is also a huge part of their focus. Collett said their aim was to raise R250 000 this year. Specific projects under Africa Foundation’s umbrella will be chosen once they know how much money will be available.

The Liberty TransCape MTB Encounter, a seven-day, 614km race will be part of a concerted drive to support Africa Foundation.

Africa Foundation chief executive Francois Peenz said it was extremely important for them to have the support of events such as the TransCape. Peenz said Africa Foundation is a non-profit organisation whose purpose is to uplift, up-skill and empower identified rural communities living near core conservation areas in Africa.

The event, supported by STANLIB and Volvo, begins in Knysna on 4 February and ends in Franschhoek on 10 February 2018.

He said the organisation produced a project menu for each region in which it operats based on the needs identified and prioritised by the communities.

XCO RACING COULD JUST BE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR! The Western Cape XCO events over the last few years, received a lot of positive feedback around the country, from riders, supporters, families and other cycling unions, for hosting some of the best XCO events. Last year a number of international professional riders took part in some of the events and added their praise. Very rewarding, is the notable growth in participants, ranging from all ages (nippers & sprogs, right up to masters). Undoubtedly the best platform for riders to develop their skills and enjoy a more testing discipline of mountain-biking, Western Cape XCO are excited to announce the following: The first event in the SRAM WC XCO Series, in association with TYGERBERG MTB CLUB, which includes the SA XCO Series Cup #1, will kick off at the Coetzenburg XCO Track in Stellenbosch, on 3 February 2018. To add to the excitement, the SA XCO Cup #1 forms part of the Junior World Tour, and Juniors have an opportunity to gain valuable UCI points for the 2018 season.” Western Cape XCO’s first event on 3 February 2018 promises to attract some big international names, as this will be the only official racing event on the Coetzeburg track, before the XCO World Cup to be held in Stellenbosch on 10 March 2018, and makes for great practice for these international superstars. “Entries are open for riders - we want to encourage all who have not raced in a XCO race before, to consider taking part. Yes, it is a racier side to MTB’ing, but there is fun to be had by all. Not everyone can be on the podium, but everyone can enjoy the same thrills, and take part in the action. Needless to say, the format of XCO racing has technical challenges, more so than your average weekend ride, and the climbing involved makes you dig very deep, so it will not be advised to enter

if you have just started the sport, but if you have been biking for a while, and want to try something different, XCO racing could just be what you’ve been looking for.” The hosting venues are all spectator friendly and encourages family and friends to join for the day - with a variety of food stalls, etc it becomes a lovely day with the family, away from the busy city. The Velodrome in Bellville was a buzz of activity during January 2018 when the wheels of seven German/European World and Olympic Track Cycling Champions rolled over its surface. The team chose the Velodrome track in preparation for their upcoming races this year - specifically the UCI Track World Championship taking place in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, from 28 February to 4 March 2018. The Western Cape weather, the track surface, as well as the International Track status proved to be a good choice for the team. The managers, coaches and team members shared their wealth of knowledge with many a South African track cyclist. During their practice sessions invaluable assistance was given to our Sprinters aiming to participate in the Commonwealth Games. The team also allowed our athletes to train and be guided by them in track cycling. The focussed German team had two training sessions per day, each session being two and a half hours. Between their cycle training they had to set time aside for gym, physio, stretching and enough sleep. After training they were left with only two days of sightseeing, taking them to Franschhoek, Camps Bay and Stellenbosch, which they thoroughly enjoyed. It was a great experience to see these athletes in action, to get to know them during the training sessions, to find out more about the individual team members, and their long list of accolades. Meet the Team members: Kristine Vogel, Miriam Welte, Maximillian Dornbach, Eric Engler, Joachim Eilers, Max Levy and Robert Fostemann. The 32-year-old Kristine Vogel has a long list of extraordinary achievePhoto: Jean Smit, Mitch Sparrow and ments to her name. She is UCI ranked Burton Witbooi with German coaches number 1 Elite Ladies Sprinter, as well as number 1 Ladies Team Sprinter. Kristine is a six-time crowned Junior World Champ, and 2 time European Junior Champ. She recalls receiving a Junior Champ World title at the Velodrome. In 2009 Kristine was seriously injured which left her in a coma for 2 days after a collision with a minibus, while riding near her home. She went from strength to strength picking herself up and was back on the bike in 2010. Between 2010 and 2017 she accumulated 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze European Champion Medals, 9 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze World Champion Medals, and she also boasts with 2 Gold and 1 Bronze Olympic Medals. In 2012 Kristina teamed up with Miriam Welte. The team took Gold at the World Champs followed by the first ever Gold Olympic Medal in a woman’s Team Sprint event. Kristine, a police officer back home has earned respect with her many accolades.

Joachim Eilers aged 27 is very familiar with the podium. He is ranked 4th in Keirin, 6th in the Kilo and 1st in the Team Sprint. He is the proud owner of 2 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze European Championship medals together with 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze World Championship medals. The 30-year Max Levy has earned the nickname, ‘Hot Pappa’ by his team mates. Max is the father of a 2 year and 4 year old daughter. He holds the UCI rank 31 for sprinting, and 1 for Team Sprint. In 2004 and 2005 Max received Junior World titles for the Kilo and Team Sprint with his team mate and friend Robert Forstemann. Max gave Storm King, one of the SA Junior track riders some valuable advice: “Go for it!”

Robert Fostemann is a 31-year old sprinter extraordinaire. Robert is the father of two sons, a 4 year old, and 5 month old baby. He says: “I never want to look back on my life one day and say…. I should have, why didn’t I?” Being away from home is not easy for Robert, but with ‘face time’ and technology, it makes it a little more bearable.

The enormity of all Robert achievements as a sprinter leaves one breathless. Robert holds over 50 International medals. His Junior World titles of 2004 sprinting did not come easy. At a young age Robert had a problem with his hip and could not participate in any sport. He only started road cycling at the Photo: SA Sprinters Jean Smit, age of 15. Robert lives, breathes Mitch Sparrow and Burton Witbooi and achieves success, as he stays focussed, believing success will come; although it is very hard work - it still remains unquestionably worth it. Ranked number 1 for his Team Sprint he acquired 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze European Championship medals plus 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze World Championship medals with 1 Bronze Olympic medal. Later this month Robert will be launching his latest hobby - making wooden tables from the wood of cycling tracks. Over and above being a Police Officer, Robert adores extreme challenges which includes skydiving. Robert Forstemann, Max Levy and Joachim Eilers are all consumed in their goal to achieve Gold for their Team Sprint at the World Championships this year. Germany is the leading Nation for the Elite Men’s Team Sprint for the 1km Time Trial, and holds second ranking Elite men’s Keirin titles. The German ladies Duo is the leading Nation Elite Ladies Team sprint, Elite ladies Keirin as well as the Elite ladies 500m Time Trial.

REALTY

Secure a ‘PLAN B’ in Europe & PROTECT YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE The opportunity to be able to put together a meaningful legacy that protects both you & your family’s future is something that many people want to explore. There are many options for consideration from traditional investments like the stock exchange or investment schemes, to more adventurous opportunities like flirting with Crypto currencies; and of course the tried and tested investment tool of tangible bricks and mortar. Each investment class has it’s own benefits, and depends on your appetite for risk and how quickly you want to maximize the final payout in terms of your financial plan. PROPERTY OWNERSHIP IN CYPRUS GIVES YOU ACCESS TO THE EU! In Cyprus, when you combine property ownership with securing permanent residency or a 2nd citizenship, then you’re really putting a meaningful plan B in place for yourself & your family. There are 2 property investment programmes available to immediately benefit you and your family: 1.

Securing Permanent Residency in 4 – 6 weeks

2.

Securing EU Citizenship in 3 months GETTING PERMANENT RESIDENCY

Cyprus’ permanent residency programme is the ONLY programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family all secure residency FOR LIFE in 4 – 6 weeks of making application. By buying a single property for minimum €300,000 the entire family gets permanent residency permits. This means that the main applicant, the spouse, ALL dependent children up to age 25 and both the parents AND the parents-in-law qualify for residency. The family does not need to live in Cyprus for the residency permits to remain valid; nor does the investor need to buy in a special designated area (SDA). A tangible benefit is that the property CAN be rented out to earn a Euro-based income. Your investment truly works for you! GETTING EU CITIZENSHIP If urgently securing an EU passport for you and your family is a priority, then Cyprus’ ‘Citizenship through Investment’ programme is your solution. This is THE ONLY programme where EUROPEAN citizenship is guaranteed to be granted in 3 months; and all dependent children up to age 28 qualify. The investor and his/her entire family have visa-free access to more than 169 countries in the world; and complete freedom of access to the whole of the EU – including the UK. All Cypriot passport holders can live, work, study and travel anywhere in Europe without any restrictions. Now that’s a serious Plan B that’s worth investing in!

INSPIRING STORY

FROM REFUGEE TO PRO CYCLIST

WP CYCLING ROAD LEAGUE PLANS AND OUTLOOK FOR 2018

An inspiring, heartfelt, and remarkable story of a young man from Africa determined to beat huge odds to become a pro continental cyclist, has come to a happy ending when Israel Cycling Academy signed Awet Gebremedhin, a refugee from Eritrea, for the next two seasons. Gebremedhin (25) will be the team’s first East African rider as the Israeli squad goes into its most crucial season ever and eyes its Grand Tour debut at the historic Giro d’Italia which starts in Jerusalem in May. “I still cannot believe it,” said the Eritrean climber. “I waited for this opportunity almost all my life and there were moments of darkness and despair when I almost lost any hope that this miracle could actually happen. But now, everything that I had to go through, it all seems worth it.” Team founder and Co owner Ron Baron has made it clear that this represents much more than just the signing of a talented young rider. “Here is a rider who deserves an opportunity to fulfill the dreams that seemed almost lost.” It has been a rocky thirteen-year journey to the professional ranks for Gebremedhin, who first began riding as an 11-year-old from a remote Eritrean chicken farm. He has endured an astonishing odyssey, overcoming family separation, hiding, years away from a bike, and even self-induced hunger. “I just kept hanging on and hanging on,” he said. “I guess I really wanted it.” He was born in Debarwa to a family of six brothers and three sisters. Gebremedhin started riding while he worked on his father’s farm as a child. “It was 15 kilometers to school when I moved from grammar school so [my dad] decided it was worth it to invest his very little money in buying me a used bike so I could get back quickly and work in the farm.” Photo: Awet Gebremedhin Photo Credit: Sergio Gallegos

He rode so fast that he crashed a lot. The word of the speedy young cyclist soon spread.

He started winning local races and in 2009 moved to the capital city of Asmara and joined his country’s biggest team, Zoba Debube. Developing his climbing skills, he accumulated victories, raced for the Eritrean National team, and competed in Italy for the first time in 2011. Two years later he returned to race in Italy with his team, but this time he decided he was not going back to Eritrea. He escaped to Sweden where he applied for asylum but because, his legal status with the Swedish government was unclear, he had to confine himself to a friend’s home for 18 long months, fearful that he would get arrested and sent back to Eritrea if he ventured out. “It was by far the worst time in my life,” he recalled. “I could not go out and forced myself to eat very little, actually starving. It was the only way to keep my body lean as I hardly moved. I knew that with no riding for a long period I was risking my future as a pro so I just had to starve many times.” What kept him sane was his work ethic. “I spent all my hiding time studying Swedish so I would have a better chance to get my papers.” Eventually, his struggle paid off and in November 2015 he was declared a legal refugee in Sweden.

The Western Province Cycling Association (WPCA) who is affiliated under Cycling South Africa (CSA) is proud to announce the 2018 WP Cycling Road League after a successful 2017 season, which saw exceptional racing in all categories. WPCA invites new cyclists and the 2017 league riders who are interested, to participate in the 2018 league season. The Western Province Schools Association have dedicated school’s events that run-in conjunction with some of the WP Cycling League races on routes that are deemed easier and safer for young cyclist. From these events, scholars are chosen to represent Western Province at various CSA Youth Festivals around the country. WP Cycling have also recently joined forces with WP MTB to establish a single online presence. Due to a recent decline in the number of road races, the WP Cycling league was initiated by the WPCA who represents 27 cycling clubs within the Cape Town area. The aim is to improve the standard of competitive cycling in the region and to prepare aspiring riders for international participation. The league has grown from 150 cyclists in 2015 to 650 cyclists in 2017 and still growing. Racing is organized by the Road Commission of Western Province with assistance from affiliated clubs, the Winelands Cycling Association and their affiliated clubs, as well as the West Coast Cycling Association and their affiliated clubs. All disciplines of road cycling are catered for. Racing takes the form of traditional road races over distances in excess of 100 kilometres, circuit races, criteriums and time trials. For 2018, racing will again be divided into 3 different categories where the same standard of cyclists competes against each other without taking age into account. Category 1 is for the top racing cyclists from the age of 17 and older, whilst Category 2 is a slight step down in standard from Category 1 and is aimed at talented cyclist also from the age of 17 and older. Category 3 is an inter club competition for bona fide members of clubs affiliated to CSA, novice racers and those who are still competitive but are unable to dedicate their time to train. WP Cycling encourages the Elite and Sub Veterans to ride in Category 1, Veterans in Category 2 and Masters in Category 3. WPCA is working hard towards the goal of having a dedicated Ladies Category, but they are encouraged to ride in Category 3 until a Ladies Category is realised. The Ladies will have their own competition, podium and prize fund.

A few months before finally settling his status, he dared to go out. “For three months, I collected empty beer bottles and sold them. Eventually I had enough to buy a bike, shoes, and a helmet, and I could go out training again. I would train for hours and hours to get back in shape.” Once able to travel again, the amateur team Marco Polo signed the determined rider, who finished 19th in his first race after more than two years, proving he could still deliver promising results. In 2017, he moved to Kuwait-Cartucho.es, a small continental team. After a tough adaptation process, he showed his potential, finishing 16th in the Vuelta Madrid, and in the Volta a Portugal he was a mere 34 seconds behind the winner on the queen stage, placing 37th overall in the demanding stage race. Gebremedhin suffered a blow when the team folded, however, leaving him without an income, but then came a break: his friends at Marco Polo were making the rounds and calling teams on his behalf. Enter Israel Cycling Academy. “Credit [Marco Polo] for saving his career,” said ICA general manager Ran Margaliot. “They said to me that I must take a close look at him and I am happy we did.” Unfortunately for Gebremedhin, there was no room in the Professional Continental squad. “He deserved a contract but we had already completed our roster,” said Margaliot who could only offer the Eritrean a spot on the team’s development squad. Gebremedhin accepted. The young refugee’s luck continued to improve. The sudden departure of Turkish time trial champion Ahmet Orken opened a spot in the Pro team. When Margaliot called Gebremedhin with the news, the Eritrean was almost moved to tears. “It was a dream come true. I could not believe it,” he said. For the team, it was a great moment as it had looked to sign an African rider for a long time. “We started our search 2 years ago,” said Margaliot. “The amount of talent in the African continent is just unbelievable.”

The points system will for Category 1 and 2 will be performance based, while in Category 3 points for club and team participation will be dominant. This year bonus points will also be awarded for clubs having females competing. Points are awarded for all finishers and accumulated over the season to determine the overall winner of each category at the end of the season. The first 5 events for the 2018 season have been applied for and WPCA awaits event permission from the events office. (See page 15 for events). For more information visit www.wpcycling.com

TRAINING PROGRAMME TO PREPARE FOR CYCLE TOUR 2018 Sub 3 racing snake - (serious cyclist with at least 6 weeks of base miles in the legs and on a periodised training programme. (Once a week). Long steady rides - Long steady rides are also called ‘endurance miles’ or LSD’s (long slow distance). “Choose undulating terrain and ride at a pace that you can hold a conversation,” says Austin, explaining that you should only have to compose yourself every few minutes by taking a deeper breath. Slowly build up the hours over the next 12 weeks toward race day. Slacker - Recommended to do a few times if at least to only test your backside ‘fitness’ and catch some rays. Newbie - Build up to a 3-4 hour ride at least once a month. Social rider - 3-4 hour rides once a week. Sub 3 racing snake - 3-4 hour rides twice a week. Make sure to reward yourself with an easier week every three to four weeks by doing up to 60% less than the normal training weeks. Fuel your body in training and in racing. There is no use building a V8 engine and fueling it with air. Photo Credit: Cape Town Cycle Tour

Whether you want to better your personal best or out sprint your buddies, here’s a 100km training programme by cycling Coach Barry Austin how to prepare for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2018. On Sunday 11 March 2018, some 35 000 cyclists of all ages, shapes and fitness levels will line up for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The Cycle Tour is affectionately known as ‘the world’s biggest fun ride,’ but make no mistake about it, physically it’s still a very genuine challenge and whether you have aspirations of joining the exclusive sub-three-hour club or just want to beat the guy in the Garfield suit, here are some top tips to get you through those 109-kilometres around the Cape Peninsula. Hill repeats - “Include a session with four to six hills between one kilometre and three kilometres long once a week into your training regime,” says cycling Coach Barry Austin, who mentored the likes of John-Lee Augustyn, Jacques Janse van Rensburg and Louis Meintjes to pro-stardom. “Ride at the maximum effort you can maintain up the hill without seeing the sun disappear under the mushroom cloud caused by your exploding legs,” he says. You know that effort level just before the wheezy breathing. Complete rest between each hill interval. Slacker - The person who still has last year’s Cycle Tour number sticker on his bike. (Do this sometime, somewhere before the race, just to check your bike is working. Newbie - First Cape Town Cycle Tour. (Once a week). Social rider - Looking to finish in a time of between four and five hours. (Once a week).

Pyramid Intervals - Austin says these are also known as: ‘I hate you, but love what you do for me’ intervals. Warm up for 30 minutes at a moderate pace. Ride flatout for 1 minute. Recover at an easy pace for 1 minute. Ride flat-out for 2 minutes. Recover at an easy pace for 2 minutes. Ride flat-out for 3 minutes. Recover at an easy pace for 3 minutes. Ride flat-out for 4 minutes. Recover at an easy pace for 4 minutes. Ride flat-out for 5 minutes. Recover at an easy pace for 5 minutes. Repeat back down from 4 to 1 and then recover at an easy pace for 15-30 minutes. Slacker - Avoid. Period. It hurts. Newbie - Avoid like the plague until you really feel up to it or feel you are progressing fast. Social Rider - You can take a stab at it if you feel the need to hate yourself a bit, but only if already well into a proper training regime. Sub 3 racing snake - Include once a week in the last few weeks before the big one. Essential skills - “Learn to ride in a group,” says Austin. “You can save between up to 30% energy by riding effectively in a group.” According to Austin, that equates to shaving some between 15 and 30 minutes off of your Cape Town Cycle Tour time. “Without becoming any fitter,” he says. He recommends focusing on the upper body and head of the rider in front of you, and to avoid staring at their back wheel. The best way to learn to do this is join local club rides or to enter smaller races in the lead up to the event. “Just remember, if you are going to hide in the bunch and not take turns pulling on the front, it’s not cool to sprint over the finish line. Besides – it’s the fun ride champs, right?”

RESULTS - EDEN ROAD AND TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The Eden Road and Time Trial Championships took place in Oudtshoorn on the weekend of 12-14 January 2018, a week before the Western Cape Road Champs. Many riders used this opportunity to test their fitness levels ahead of the South African Road Champs taking place in February 2018. Even riders outside the Eden District like Theuns van der Bank, Kelson Da Cruz, Liezel Jordaan and Louis Visser took part in the event. The routes used was partly on the SA Road Champs course and therefore good preparation for the upcoming event. The 102km race was won by Louis Visser with more than a minute to Marchal Hendricks taking the sprint with Theuns van der Bank in third. Theuns van der Bank also won the 27km Time Trial. The 52km was won by Errol Pretorius in a sprint finish with Benino Hans second and Kelson Da Cruz third. These 3 had more than 2 minutes on the 4th rider. Julian Bunge, a U/17 rider had to complete the last 15km on a flat back wheel in his 1st road race ever. Errol also won the 14km Time trial. Both the 15 and 30km distances were won by girls. The 15km was won by Mine Van der Waldt, Jana Van der Waldt second and Beyaunte Goliath third. The 30km was won by Suveena Arries, Chandre Schultz second and Jowaygen Goliath third. “Well done to all the riders competing and completing the races.”

GENERAL

Track Cycling In The Western Cape Track Cycling in the Western Cape have come a long way and has seen many riders going from strength to strength, competing at World Cups and World Championships over the years. From as young as 10 years old to older than 70 years, male and female, riders are competing in different competitions and events throughout the year. In 2017 the South African National Track Championships was held at the Bellville Veledrome where riders from all over the country came to compete for the ultimate prize of becoming the National Champion in various events. “Riding the Wall” as often referred to by track cyclists, is known for fast, action paced track racing. Track racing dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. The first World Championships were held in 1895. Track cyclists are powerful athletes, generally with far more muscle bulk than “road racers”. Velodromes can range from less than 200 metres (with very steep banking) to over 450 metres on outdoor, concrete tracks. However, Olympic standard velodromes need to be 250 metres in length, completely covered, and made of wood. Why Race On The Track? If you like racing on the road, you’ll like racing on the track. That’s probably the main reason to race on the track. But here are some other considerations as well: Strength & Skill Development: Track racing is used by many elite road racers to develop top-end speed, smooth pedaling at high cadences, and better bike handling skills. You Might Be Better At It: If your body wasn’t designed to go fast uphill, well, I’ve got good news for you. Velodrome designers have cleverly omitted hills altogether. You might just be better at track racing. If you don’t have great aerobic talent, it’s likely that you will do better on the track than on the road, particularly in the short events. Shorter Training Rides: Training for track racing can be less time-consuming because the races are shorter. Most races are 10km or less, and the longest races at your local Velodrome are probably 25km. If you never train for more than 60 or 90 minutes at a time, that’s OK as long as the training is intense. So it can work well with a tight work schedule. Spectating: Your friends and family aren’t very likely to come see you race on the road. But they can come out to the velodrome, and even kids can appreciate what’s going on – because they can see all the racing, all the time. You will get fitter and faster: Training on the track enables you to work on your top-end speed without having to keep stopping for junctions and traffic lights. Training full-on on the track definitely gives you that zip and speed and explosive power which you can use on the road.

Being able to ride really hard on the flat for a couple of minutes comes in pretty handy in a race. The following is a brief description of the races: Individual Sprint (Men/Women) -Traditionally held over three laps, this event captures the essence of track cycling. Kilometre Time Trial (Men) - Probably the most painful of track disciplines, the “kilo” is raced as a time trial over 1000 metres. 500m Time Trial (Women) - Held over half the distance of the men, the women’s 500m time trial requires explosiveness as well as good top speed. Keirin (Men/Women) - The keirin is a motorpaced event with 6-8 riders at any one time. Individual Pursuit (Men/women) - Held over 4000m for elite men and 3000m for elite women, this is considered an “endurance” track event. Team Pursuit (Men/Women) - Both men’s and women’s teams fielding four-rider teams and competing over 4000 metres. Points Race (Men/women) - A rider scores points in intermediate bonus sprints every 10th lap (5, 3, 2, 1) with double points usually awarded on the last lap. Scratch Race (Men/Women) - Probably the closest the track has to a road race, with riders competing to be the first across the line. The men’s competition takes place over 15km, while the women’s is 10km., Come to the first track event at the Bellville Velodrome on 13 February 2018 and see what it's all about.

Wireless ISP to Provide

Meet Qhubeka,

The wireless internet service provider BreedeNet has partnered with Dryland Event Management for 2018 and beyond to provide state of the art broadcast solutions to riders, the media and even fans of mountain biking at Dryland events. The service started at the 2018 Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme and BreedeNet will be providing race village WiFi for all Dryland Event Management races.

John and Paula Wehmiller from Pennsylvania sent this gorgeous photo of their puppy, who they’ve named Qhubeka to the Qhubeka Charity.

Connectivity To Riders And Media

Internet connectivity has become an increasingly important factor in our modern lives and with Dryland Event Management hosting races in areas where internet access is often limited the partnership between BreedeNet and Dryland is a particularly relevant one. BreedeNet’s technical experience of delivering internet access in remote rural areas allow mountain bikers and trail runners to upload their activities, post their photos and videos on social media and communicate with their loved ones at home from all Dryland events. In addition to providing event entrant WiFi BreedeNet have also committed to delivering high speed internet for the in-house and riding/running media, in order to ensure that each event is broadcast to the world in a manner which encapsulates the superb entrant experience Dryland offer. Mountain biking fans will also be excited to note Photo Credit: Oakpics.com that BreedeNet are working in conjunction with Bigshot Media to live stream the racing action from the 2018 Momentum Health Tankwa Trek. Bigshot Media, the television production company which broadcasts all of Dryland Event Management’s races are also excited about the potential the partnership with BreedeNet provides. Mark le Roux, of Bigshot Media, is particularly looking forward to the Momentum Health Tankwa Trek. “Bigshot Live will be covering the event as usual but we have decided to live stream Stage 3 on 11 February,” Le Roux said. BreedeNet will also be using the partnership with Dryland Event Management to launch their services in the Southern Cape and Klein Karoo. Customers in Oudtshoorn, and the surrounding Southern Cape and Klein Karoo regions can sign up for BreedeNet’s services.

The Golden Retriever

John explains that their previous, much-loved golden retriever, Tyler, died on Bastille Day during the Tour de France in 2016, after a battle with cancer. “My wife and I separately said to ourselves that when we were able to get our next dog, she would be named Qhubeka, in the spirit of ‘carrying on’ (which is what Qhubeka means in Nguni languages).” “We are honoured to have this beautiful pup named after us and the spirit of what we stand for, and our thanks go to John and Paula, who have been explaining the name and our charity to family and friends since Qhubeka’s arrival.” Qhubeka Cheer Bells In South Africa’s rural North West province, at the Marico Rural Development Project (MRDP), the sound of cowbells fills the air. Rather than a herd of cattle, however, the sound is coming from a workshop where creative local craftspeople are making the bells out of recycled metal. These Cheer Bells are designed for supporters at sports events. Cowbells were first used in sports by the Swiss to cheer on athletes at downhill skiing events. They have gone on to become an icon at the Winter Olympics and usage has spread into the sports of cycling and triathlons. The colourful Qhubeka versions put an African spin on the bells. Each bell is carefully handmade and hand-painted. The artisans making them are part of a Qhubeka work-to-earn programme. The bells are then distributed by Qhubeka, and hopefully make their way into the hands of sports supporters around the world.

GENERAL

Western Cape Road & TT Champs Showcase Their Talent Western Cape Road and Time Trial Championships 2018 took place from 20-21 January 2018 at Windmeul Cellars in Paarl with more than 300 national riders and two international riders participating in the event. The participating numbers clearly reflect that the event is gaining popularity and was especially well attended when hosted close to the City, an area from where most of the riders originate. The Western Cape has, without doubt, the largest number of cyclists in the country and cycling is in our blood; on the road or out on the trails. It is therefore important to showcase their talent via provincial races in preparation for the SA Road and Time Trial Championship taking place from 6-11 February 2018 in Oudtshoorn. This year the Western Cape athletes did not disappoint and provided top class racing at the event. On day 1, Stefan de Bod, U/23 rider for Team Dimension Data Continental was the winner of the men’s Time Trial, while Liezel Jordaan won the Women’s category. On day 2, two international riders Simon Andreassen and Leon Koller competed in the men’s road race with Andreassen (U/23) crossing the finish line first with Rohan du Plooy (Elite) in second, and Craig Boyes (Elite) in third. Rohan du Plooy, race favourite was crowned as the Elite Mens Western Cape Champ and continued his form after his excellent victory at the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour last year. Maroesjka Matthee was back in action winning the women’s road race after being out of racing for a year. Theuns van der Bank won the Vets category in the colours of Team Demacon-Aurecon after riding for Team Giant in the elite category for many years. The battle between Linwell Jansen and Matthew Fortuin in the Junior Male category ensured the usual excitement, with Linwell beating Matthew to the line. The Junior Women’s podium winners were Carla Steyn in first, followed by Mia de Villiers and Ashleigh Parsons in third. “Western Cape Cycling wish to thank all riders that participated in this year’s event and we hope to see more of the youth competing in the coming years.”

Team Demacon-Aurecon p/b PowerBar

The “Team” was created in 2010 with Aurecon as the teams’ principal sponsor. The initial 2 year agreement quickly turned into 7 years of sponsorship from 2010 to 2016. In 2017, Demacon joined the team as co-title sponsor as well as co-sponsors, PowerBar Supplements and Salice Eyewear.

“We also wish to thank everyone that helped to make this event such a success, especially the volunteers who put in great effort without reward. You have made a huge difference this year!”

Team Mad Macs Team Mad Macs has changed names frequently over the last few years, however the Stellenbosch/Somerset West based outfit is likely to remain ‘Team Mad Macs’ for years to come. Alex Heward founded the team several years ago, branching away from the Maties set-up, however, keeping the ethos of developing students and youngsters into professional cyclists. Alex and the team are still affiliated with the University of Stellenbosch (Maties), with some of the riders competing each year for the University. Alex also facilitates the High Performance Cycling program. “It has been a long tough road for us to get to where we are, however I feel things are really coming together well now. Both with sponsors and riders the mix is right and I feel that we are going to have a big year,” says Alex. The riders for Team Mad Macs 2018 include: Alex Heward, Jonathan van Gesselleen, Max Sullivan, Etnard Louw, Shaun Glover, Greg de Vink, Rocco King and Declan Sidey with Team Managers Errard Sullivan and Richard de Vink.

Each rider on the team manages their training, racing, team and sponsor obligations while having full-time jobs. The team competes in the Sub-veteran category as well as Cat 1 racing against the local elite, semi-PRO and in some events also against the fully professional teams. Since the teams’ inception, it has grown from strength to strength, both in terms of results and more importantly in terms of exposure for the sponsors. The riders for Team Demacon-Aurecon 2018 include: Charl van Wyk (Team Captain and Manager), Ignus Oosthuizen, Rudie Kellerman, Jack van Wyk, and Paul-Dean Rörich. The two new riders that will also wear the 2018 Team Demacon-Aurecon outfit are: Theuns van der Bank and Evan Carstens. Theuns is currently the South African Time Trial champion (30-34 category) as well as Western Cape Road and Time Trial champion. He has also achieved multiple SA and WP track titles as well as being selected for the SA Commonwealth track team (2006). Evan is arguably one of the fasted sprinters in Cape Town and is no stranger to the top step in both road and track races and has won numerous races as well as represent South Africa at track events across the globe.

“Since I joined the team, I have tried to help out wherever possible, whether it was sourcing sponsors or posting on social media. At the end of the day, we’re a bunch of mates pedalling our bikes together. I’ve always been willing to go to extreme lengths for my friends, both on and off the bike and I can’t wait for my 4th year with the team. It’s incredible to witness Alex’s compassion first hand, not many people realise what goes into running a cycling team, it requires a lot of sweat capital (no pun intended),” says Max Sullivan. With the recent signing of Declan Sidey, Team Mad Macs will definitely be looking to take some podiums on the dirt, not only the tarmac. Declan rode for the team in 2016, before making a move up country to focus on a professional mountain bike career, which saw him progress leaps and bounds, eventually winning the Diamond Rush Nissan Trail Seeker and finishing 3rd overall in the series. With the lack of a National MTB series, Declan will target the Trail Seeker series as well as some large stage races including the Old Mutual Jo’Berg2c and PE to Plett.

Team Demacon-Aurecon has always been predominantly a road cycling team, but some of the riders often race the bigger mountain bike events as well and have secured several top positions. The Team will compete in South African Road Championships, as well as local PPA and WP League races throughout the year where they hope to take on the best elite teams and races the Western Cape has to offer. They will also travel upcountry (if the budget allows) to race Amashova in Durban and the 94.7 in Johannesburg.

The rest of the team will also compete on the dirt here and there, at races such as the 100 Miler and alike. They will also be sending riders to some of the bigger races including the Knysna Oyster Festival, Amashova and 94.7, whilst racing as much as possible in the Western Cape. The team has had a good start to the year, already racking up some podium places at the Festival of Cycling in PE. The teams focus will however be on developing the younger riders, with emphasis on Greg de Vink and Rocco King. Greg will be doing a stint in Europe in pursuit of a professional career in cycling. This year the team has collaborated with Vuselela School Makeover, an NPO based in Paarl, the first quest of the year entails helping youngsters complete the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The team recently handed over some cycling kit, GU Energy and Squirtlube products. Follow Team Mad Macs or StelliesCycling on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

Despite it’s name, it’s not only rare and highly sought after wines that are up for offer at the 2018 Cape Wine Auction event, but exclusive invitations to some of the best sporting events for those fans with big cheque books and even bigger hearts. The action kicks off on Friday, 9 February 2018 at the Tokara Deli on the Tokara Wine and Olive Estate with the American Express Barrel Auction, followed by the main event - the Cape Wine Auction - sponsored by Nedbank Private Wealth taking place the following day on Saturday, February 10, at the Rustenberg Estate in Stellenbosch. Two of the amazing lots that include once-in-a-lifetime sporting opportunities include: For the ultimate Manchester United fan - VIP tickets to a select 2018/19 regular season match at historic Old Trafford in Manchester as well as a 2017/18 training top signed by Paul Pogba. The package comprises two VIP tickets, a three course meal at the stadium, a souvenir gift, Manchester United legend meet and greet and souvenir photo, mini tour of the stadium and megastore discount voucher. The lot also includes two business class return tickets from SA to the UK sponsored by South African Airways. The winning bidder and a partner will enjoy a first-hand experience of the world’s most iconic cycling race - the Tour de France courtesy of Nederburg, the exclusive premium wine partner of Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. The trip includes business class return flights, accommodation and meals, a meet and greet with some of the Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka cyclists, a tour the squad’s impressive bus, and a sleek, state-of-the art Cervelo S5 aero road bicycle, (as used by professional cyclist Mark Renshaw), which has an approximate value of R64 000.

In addition, as a tribute to Nederburg’s legacy for excellence in winemaking, the bidder will enjoy a rare six-bottle collection of Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, awarded the Arcadia trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2016 International Wine & Spirit Competition. Every cent of all monies raised goes to 27 carefully selected beneficiaries who make a profound impact on education and the lives of children in the Cape winelands. Last year’s auction raised a staggering R22.3 million and the organisers are determined to better that figure this year. For more information visit www.thecapewineauction.com/tickets/

THE PAIN CAVE IS THE BENKENSTEIN’S HAPPY PLACE!

Kevin “Benky” Benkenstein got married in December 2017 and had a honeymoon to plan, but couldn’t imagine himself and his bride, Mikayla lying on a beach sipping cocktails.

Instead he planned an 8 day bike-packing trip through Lesotho and the Drakensberg to show her the places he loved and some of the areas where she’s always wanted to go. Benky’s fully laden weapon of choice for the journey was a XL Santa Cruz Highball. In Mikayla’s words: “It was the best team-building camp ever!”. Not only did they have the best seats in the house, but the trip was the perfect opportunity to make sure they knew each other better than ever. And of course, they shared an experience that would stay with them forever.” #WeRide is not just a cool hashtag for the Benkensteins but a way of life. For them, it means sharing their passion for adventure and out-of-the-ordinary challenges. The Benkensteins’ 8 day trip covered a distance of 900km with a vertical accent of 18 000m, a vertical descent of 18 000m, and took the couple 50 hours to complete.

IMPRESSIVE LINE-UP FOR SA ROAD AND TT CHAMPS

Cyclists and organisers alike are gearing up with anticipation for one of the most exciting events on the South African cycling calendar. The 2018 SA National Road and Time Trial Championships set to take place in Oudtshoorn from 6-11 February 2018 boasts with an impressive line-up. This year the event will have an impressive drawcard with many international pro-cyclists on the starting list which include the likes of national cycling hero’s Daryl Impey, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Stefan de Bod and Nicholas Dlamini. The 2018 SA National Road Championships crowns the National Champion in each chosen discipline, for their respective genders and age groups. Each category from Junior, under-23 and Elite, all the way through to Masters categories between the ages of 30 and 70+ stand a chance to earn the coveted SA National Champion Jersey. Still fresh in our mind is Daryl Impey’s first win on the 2018 World Tour taking the winners jersey at the Tour Down Under. Impey, rider for Mitchelton-Scott, concluded his Australian season with third place at the Cadel Road Race. Some of his achievements include: winning the 2009 Tour of Turkey, the 2014 Tour of Alberta, and a stage win at the Tour De France where he wore the yellow jersey for two stages in 2013.

Impey will not only defend his National Time Trial title this year, but will give other South African top riders a run for their money when he lines up in the men’s Elite road race. In the week of the South African National Road Championships Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will be in Oudtshoorn defending their 2017 titles. South African National Elite Men’s Road Champion Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, will be defending his title alongside teammate and U/23 winner Stefan de Bod. Nicholas Dlamini, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Nic Dougall, Ryan Gibbons, Jaco Venter, Louis Visser and Kent Main will also represent Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka at the championships. The Team don’t get to race on home soil much during the course of the year which means the national championships are certainly a goal event for the South African riders. Africa’s Team riders competing for national honours, hoping to have the honour of wearing the national flag on their jersey for the duration of the 2018 season. The cream of riders racing in South Africa will also be well represented with the likes of Nolan Hoffman, Calvin Beneke, Tayler Day, Clint Hendricks, Jade Julius,

Greg de Vink, Eddie van Heerden to name a few. Eddie recently showed good form at the Sharjah Tour in the UAE, while representing Team South Africa. The question remains. Will Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio defend her Elite Women’s Time Trial title this year? The 2017 U/23 Women’s Time Trial and Elite Road Race champion Heidi Dalton will line up only in the Women’s Elite Road cycling event this year. Other women riders that already entered the event is: Liezel Jordaan, Carla Oberholzer, Yzette Oelofse, Catherine Colyn and Courtney Webb, to name just a few. The Elite men’s and women’s Time Trial championships takes place on Wednesday, 7 February and the Road Race Championships on Saturday, 10 February 2018. “It is an honour for us to be associated with and be involved in organising such a prestigious event. We look forward to a great Championship with competitive and positive racing.” “We wish every competitor all of the best with their last bit of preparation. Travel safely to Oudtshoorn, see you on the start-line”, says Corné Bence President: Western Cape Cycling Association. (When going into print entries for the event was still open. The riders mentioned in this article have already entered the event.)
