Australian outfit Mitchelton-SCOTT has named an in-form, eight-rider team to line-up for the Tour de France that will take place from 7-29 July 2018 that will include South African Daryl Impey.
It will be Daryl’s 6th Tour de France appearance. “Looking forward to another year with the boys for the big lap of France. I’m excited to go to Tour de France again with this crew,” says Daryl Impey.
Daryl Impey 2018 Tour Down Under champion, 2018 SA Road Champion and recent Criterium du Dauphine stage winner and winner of the green jersey, will add strength and experience to his team in the transitional stages at the Tour de France as one of the best all-round riders in the world.
Impey became the first ever South African cyclist to win the South African Time Trial title seven times, as well as his first South African Road Championship title earlier this year, having placed second in the road event on two previous occasions in 2014 and 2015.

Two-time Olympian Richard Murray raced to his first-ever Olympic distance WTS gold at the AJ Bell World Triathlon in Leeds, north of England recently. Murray has now become the first ever South African triathlete to win an Olympic distance World Triathlon Series event. Murray put down the hammer on the first lap of the 10km run to carve out what proved to be an unassailable lead despite the best efforts of race no.1 Mario Mola. Richard clocked a combined time (with the 1,500m swim and 40km cycle) of 1hr 45min 52sec. Occasional training partner Mario Mola of Spain was second and France’s Vincent Luis took the bronze. Richard Murray reflects on the highlight of his career to date: “My first ever Olympic distance World Triathlon Series win in Leeds is the biggest moment of my career. It’s been my main goal since I was 18. It took me 11 years to achieve, but I’ve now become the first ever South African triathlete to win an Olympic distance WTS event. After the heartache and hardships I went through the last couple of months, the victory in Yorkshire was that much sweeter.”
On the race itself though, things didn’t start off well. “During the swim, I actually thought I should retire from triathlon,” said a smiling Murray after the race. “I was way behind the pack in the swim, it was really tough. But on the bike, I pulled back and ended up with the second fastest bike split behind Kristian Blummenfelt from Norway. He kept biking very hard, and I just kept “quiet” and sat in a good spot,” said Murray. “On the run, the legs felt really great. The last time I was in London, I came second behind Mario at the WTS and now I have beaten him for the first time in an Olympic distance and I couldn’t be happier.”
editor@intocycling.co.za Deadline 12th each month
Murray switched coaching staff earlier this year and is now working closely with the Dutch national coaching set-up. “We changed things around the last few weeks as things weren’t going great,” he said.

“Now I just hope I can continue in his way and head towards my next big goal, the Tokyo Olympics, two years down the line,” Murray concluded.

DEVELOPING THE FUTURE OF SCHOOL CYCLING
Cycling SA has been without a president since February 2018, when William Newman resigned and Secretary General Gregory van Heerden adopted the role of caretaker until such time as a new President was elected.

The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League is about introducing more learners to bikes and encouraging South African schools to adopt mountain biking as an official sport by providing a level of regional and national structure for the sport at school level. With these simple aims the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League has built a strong cross-country racing format, with four events taking place in each province between May and September. The Spur Schools MTB League is also the country’s largest high school cycling programme and the main nursery for talent in the sport. Young mountain bikers are encouraged to saddle-up and come out in full force to represent their schools this season.

ALAN HATHERLY TAKES SA XCO CUP TITLE Alan Hatherly returned to a wet and miserable Cape Town on 1 June 2018 after a successful Europe block chasing UCI World Cup glory. He dived straight back into the local racing scene with a last-minute decision to race the SRAM Western Province XCO Series Championship at Bloemendal, outside Durbanville. Although the focus was race-specific training, Alan couldn’t help but style up the fun course and put on a show alongside good friend and training partner Matt Beers. After a two-way battle all race, Alan took a close sprint victory over Matt. A sodden Spur Schools Mountain Bike League event in Somerset West was Alan Hatherly of Team Spur's next outing. Despite truly inhospitable wet and freezing conditions the first round of the Western Cape Spur Schools League provided a record number of entrants lining up for the mudfest and racing was fast and furious throughout the age categories. The excitement and passion of riders, coaches, teachers and parents at the Spur League events is mind-blowing. Alan and Team Spur headed to Nelspruit for the final round of the South African XCO Cup Series recently. The fourth event at Mankele Bike Park took Elite riders through seven laps of a rocky and rooty course. With his next two UCI World Cup races in July just around the corner, Alan used the race as a simulation effort for pace. As each lap passed, Alan extended his gap over other riders to finish ahead of Stuart Marais and Wessel Botha, in second and third, respectively. With his win Alan claimed the overall SA XCO Cup Series title and goes into the South African National XCO Championships on 22 July 2018 as the country’s highest-ranked rider. It’s an incredible result, when considering that Alan broke both wrists in February 2018.
RECORD PARTICIPANTS AT FIRST WC SCHOOLS MTB LEAGUE OF THE SEASON The Spur Schools MTB League is on an upward trend and the 2018 season got off to a bumper start for the Western Cape with the first race of the season hosted at Southey Vines MTB Trail Park in Somerset West on 9 June 2018. Although is was a ‘muddy affair’, the event hit a record number of 750 entries with over 529 riders participating, clocking in 1536 laps for the day and covering 4564.8 kilometres in total. Michelle du Preez, Western Cape event coordinator says: “The incredible determination shown by the riders and their families through the cold and wet weather was amazing to see. It’s a testament to the growth and love of the sport in the region”. The top three participating high schools were: Paul Roos Gymnasium (1); Parel Vallei High School (2) and HTS Drostdy (3), while Van Riebeeckstrand Primary School (1); Durbanville Primary School (2) and Kenridge Primary School (3) took the top three positions for primary schools.
This year marks 10-years since the League’s inception. It’s developed from just 1 590 rider entries and 115 participating schools in 2009, to 12 722 entries and 496 schools in 2017. And 2018 will be no different; the League should see a 20-30 percent increase in rider entries when compared to last season. The Spur Schools MTB League is the country’s largest high school cycling programme and the main nursery for talent in the sport.
GREYT ESCAPE GRATEFUL TO COMMUNITY & SPONSORS FOR SUCCESSFUL EVENT Greyton, one of the Western Cape’s best loved mountain biking destinations, played host to the Greyt Escape three day mountain bike stage race from the 15-17 June 2018. The event in an around the magical town of Greyton in the Overberg presented an amazing experience for participants in the Riviersonderend Mountains and provided the perfect excuse for a long weekend. The Greyt Escape started off in wet and cold weather conditions on Friday, but did not discourage riders. Route director Andrew White, assisted by Warrick Kemp established challenging but rewarding routes for each stage of the event which featured iconic singletracks and fabled climbs. While the routes were undoubtedly tough the distances were kept below 65 kilometres on each stage with no more than 1 250 metres of climbing on any day. The riders’ feedback of the routes, the scenery and the quaint welcoming village of Greyton was overwhelmingly positive. “The race also owes a special debt of gratitude to all the landowners, sponsors and service providers. Without each of your hard work and sacrifices of time the Greyt Escape would not have been the enjoyable success it was. Thank you in particular to the communities of Greyton, Genadendal, Berea, Voorstekraal and Bosmanskloof for welcoming and supporting the event. Without the hospitality of the farmers and landowners there would be no race,” said Anneke Viljoen, Race Director of Freebody-Sports.

GET INVOLVED IN FUNDRAISING FOR QHUBEKA The talented winemaking team at Nederburg in Paarl has come out in full force to support the “ForQhubeka” fundraising drive, planned to raise awareness and funds during the 2018 Tour de France. Known as the world’s most iconic road cycling race, the 2018 Tour de France takes place from 7-29 July. Now in its 105th edition, the race is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3 351 kilometres. Nederburg is the premium wine partner of Africa’s pro-cycling squad, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. The winery is also home to Qhubeka’s bicycle assembly facility in the Western Cape. Together these entities help make a significant difference in the lives of South Africans through the distribution of bicycles within vulnerable communities. “It’s so encouraging to be working for a global brand like Nederburg that supports Qhubeka, a charity that advances socio-economic upliftment,” says Andrea Freeborough, Nederburg’s cellar-master. “The charity does so not as a hand-out, but rather a hand-up via the distribution of bicycles, to help community initiatives make a bigger impact in their respective areas of expertise, from tourism, the environment and waste management, to community safety, healthcare, education and so much more,” she explains. Anyone can participate in Qhubeka’s “ForQhubeka” fundraising events campaign. To make it accessible to all individuals, the organisation has come up with five unique fundraising categories, each offering a range of tools to support the chosen fundraising activity. The categories are: Party ForQhubeka, Climb ForQhubeka, Movie ForQhubeka, Play ForQhubeka and Sweat ForQhubeka. To get involved and register a fundraising ForQhubeka initiative, go to www.givengain.com/cc/forQhubeka. Robyn Bradshaw elaborates: “Watch this space, as there’s more to come as we prepare to support the formidable Team Dimension Data cycling team as they traverse the flats, hills and mountain stages of the 2018 Tour de France. It will demand the highest skill, the most extraordinary discipline and the unyielding will to succeed – the same tools our winemakers require to produce world-class wines of distinction. We know the riders have all those ingredients and more, and we call on you to join us in supporting this special team. It’s a massive opportunity and it deserves everyone’s backing.” For more information visit www.qhubeka.org
RAINMAKER ROLLERCOASTER 7-DAY POINT TO POINT GRAVEL STAGE RACE IS HERE The Rainmaker RollerCoaster, the world’s first seven-day point to point gravel stage race, will take place from 6-12 October 2018 in the Western Cape. The Rainmaker RollerCoaster is the latest offering from HotChillee, the cycling event group behind the renowned LONDON-PARIS and Cape Rouleur races. HotChillee has embraced the growing phenomenon of gravel riding over the past three years and have joined forces with digital disrupter Rainmaker Solutions, the title sponsor of the inaugural event.
“I was hooked on my first gravel ride three years ago,” said Sven Thiele, HotChillee Founder. “Putting the Rainmaker RollerCoaster together over that period has been a wonderful experience and seeing the level of buy in by locals, authorities, riders and sponsors indicates that gravel racing and riding will be the new wave of cycling.” “South Africa, and the Western Cape in particular, is ideally suited to gravel riding with its quiet, long and safe district roads that connect towns, villages and farms. There are challenging climbs and the terrain and scenery is some of the most beautiful in the world. It combines the best aspects of road and mountain bike riding, but at the same time imparts a unique cycling experience that we believe takes this wonderful sport to a new, exciting level.” The Rainmaker RollerCoaster begins with a sunset time trial in the Bontebok National Park, Swellendam and will finish in Plettenberg Bay on the iconic Garden Route. With a distance of 550km, the route follows gravel roads and trails of the farmlands in Swellendam, into the semi desert of the Little Karoo, along the lush Garden Route, through the Knysna forest and finishes at the breathtaking coast of Plettenberg Bay. Participants will stay overnight in tented race villages, with upgrade accommodation packages available. Sakkie Franken, Executive Mayor of the Overberg region: “It is an honour to host the Rainmaker RollerCoaster in the Overberg region. The wonderful scenery, local food and wine will further enhance the riders experience whether they are racing, riding or just exploring the gravel parcours.”
Photo: Christoph Sauser - Photo Credit: Photo Michal Cerveny
The Rainmaker RollerCoaster offers riders the chance to race 550km with 8000m of climbing from Swellendam to the coastal resort of Plettenberg Bay. Riders can take part in teams of two or can ride in small groups supported by the HotChillee Ride Captains. The event will be open to mountain bikes as well, but the parcours will suit the speed of a gravel bike. There will be jersey and age category awards.
songo.info will be a charity partner for their new seven-day gravel race, with founder Christoph Sauser riding for the charity. Swiss national, Christoph, is the world’s best-known marathon MTBer, having been a former World Champion, won five ABSA Cape Epics, and 14 UCI World Cup wins. Christoph has recently gotten into gravel riding and racing, and is excited to be taking part in the world’s first seven-day point to point gravel race.

CYCLOPLUS TOUR - "WE VISIT OUDTSHOORN FIETSE" On the 1st of April 1997 Essie Esterhuyse opened Oudtshoorn Fietse. During a recent visit from the CycloPlus team Oom Esterhuyse told them a little bit about how he landed up in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Born on a farm outside of the Eastern Cape farming community of Aberdeen, oom Essie spent much of his childhood in the Free State after his father bought a farm. His memories of those early years are drowned out by the area’s depressingly flat landscape ... “die land was te plat vir my!” After escaping the mielie fields of the Free State, Worcester would be his home for 25 years. Essie roars with laughter when describing how he inadvertently swapped his flat surroundings for the howling winds that blow through the Breede Valley. Unable to bare the torrents of air ripping through the valley he decided to ‘trek’ to Oudtshoorn where has lived happily for the past 21 years. Oom Essie's first love is road cycling, which is clearly evident with this awesome IBM Lotus Supercycling Team poster dating back to 2001. With the roads surrounding Oudtshoorn rather dangerous, Oom Essie has become an ardent mountain biker, riding 3 days a week together with his friends at 6am to keep in shape. ‘Hou bene Hou!’

“I stock CycloPlus because it’s priced right,” says Essie Esterhuyse. While tyres, bearings and cranksets are popular, Oudtshoorn Fietse’s best seller is the CycloPlus rear derailleur. CycloPlus is proud to supply quality parts to dealers like Essie Esterhuyse.
REASONS TO HOP ON A BIKE INSTEAD OF A CAR IN STELLENBOSCH Poynt Bikes is an innovative, sustainable and fun way to rent and ride bicycles in and around Stellenbosch. Their aim is to offer a cost-effective and pragmatic solution addressing the needs of the Stellenbosch community. There are so many great reasons to hop on a bike instead of a car – less traffic congestion, cleaner air, financial savings, no hassle of finding parking and getting active. With stations positioned around Stellenbosch and more being added, it’s easy and convenient to get a bike, get to your destination and drop the bike off. The system is entirely operated through a smartphone application, allowing users to rent, return and manage subscription packages virtually and seamlessly across all the bikes in circulation. Once on the app: unlock and manage your rentals, see all your history, operate and see GPS views and coordinates of exactly how many bikes are available at various stations. One can also pre-book a bike.
The approach Poynt Bikes is taking around bike sharing is to ultimately resolve the critical problem of parking in Stellenbosch. This is a convenient and viable way to get parking stations and parking lots outside of town where we aim to move the traffic out of Stellenbosch and essentially have more people in the town commuting using bikes as opposed to parking on campus. If all goes well, and everything goes as planned, Poynt Bikes will officially be launched at the beginning of July 2018 with an aim of at least 500 bikes being made available in Stellenbosch. The 3-day Reeds Ladies MTB Tour mountain bike event takes place from 31 August to 2 September 2018 at the Wederom Guest Farm located in the picturesque wine-producing valley of Robertson, only two hour’s drive from Cape Town and will be the start and finish-line for all the 3 stages. This 3-day Ladies MTB Tour is a perfect way to conclude Woman’s Month celebrations.
The 13th edition of the Stellenbosch MTB Challenge on 29 July 2018, takes a break from the annual 6 route format and focuses on fun and family with 2 route options launching from the new venue at the Spier Wine Estate!
On Friday, 31 August 2018 Stage 1 will cover a distance of 80km with a climb of 600m taking riders along the Breede river direction of Van Loveren Wine Estate where lunch will be served before returning to Wederom Wine Farm. During the second stage cyclists will endure the challenge in and around the Rooiberg area with lunch at Roam Rooiberg. On this stage riders will be covering a distance of 70km with a 1000m gradient. The final stage on Sunday, 2 September covers a shorter distance of 65km, with a 500m climb taking riders into a north easterly direction, before returning to Wederom Wine Farm for lunch at which time the Reeds Ladies MTB 2108 Tour will come to an end.
As one of the premier venues in South Africa, Spier Wine Estate needs no introduction and has loads on offer for riders and spectators alike with wonderful food, wine, and beautiful scenery to wow the senses. The two routes chosen for this year’s challenge compliments the venue and offering perfectly. To add to the fun, a new trail run will be hosted on Saturday, 28 July to create the perfect winelands outdoor weekend. Entries are open for the mountain bike event with a 22km and a 50km distance. As there are fewer distance options, entries will be limited to 2000 riders, to give outdoor enthusiasts the ultimate experience. The picturesque routes will cater for beginners and intermediate riders in keeping with this year’s theme of having fun outside with friends and family.
At all times two Ride Captains will accompany the single group of riders throughout the different routes over the 3-day cycling experience. EXPLORE TRAILS THROUGH THE FYNBOS IN THE DE HOOP VLEI MTB EXPERIENCE The inaugural De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience, which takes place from the 22nd to the 24th of September 2018, has revealed the routes for the three day mountain biking extravaganza. Freebody-Sports and the De Hoop Collection have worked tirelessly over the autumn months to bring together a mix of established, virgin and usually off-limits trails to create a compact, yet challenging and rewarding route. “We believe that we have put together a route which showcases the De Hoop and Rûens regions of the Overberg like never before,” said Race Director Anneke Viljoen. “The local land owners have been incredibly accommodating and have gone out of their way to help us create this amazing route. From our route guru, Neil Neethling, who ensured the route passed by all the most beautiful sights of the area; to Adam Albertyn, who has built a brand new section of singletrack on his farm especially for Stage 2 of the De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience – we could not have produced this route without the local farmers. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the World Wildlife Fund and Peter Krcmar, owner of the Fynbos Trust, for allowing the race to traverse their beautiful and ecologically sensitive land,” Viljoen concluded. The race will start with a 51km long opening stage, which sets the scene for the long weekend’s riding. The stage kicks off with opportunities for game viewing – which provides grazing for herds of cape mountain zebra, bontebok and eland – before heading north towards the limestone hill, with the highlight of the day, a technical singletrack descent dubbed “Pebble Dash”, leading riders into the farmlands and onto the trails alongside the Potberg River. The route crosses the stream a number of times, traversing fields of ripening wheat, barley and canola. After crossing the vlei riders face the day’s most significant challenge, the 3km long “Fynbos Climb”. From the summit of the climb it is largely downhill to the finish though, where a delicious lunch awaits at the De Hoop Collection. The second stage of the race departs from De Hoop Nature Reserve and the farms immediately surrounding it for the Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve. The sixty two kilometre stage, to and from this unique reserve, takes in trails never before used in a mountain bike race and a 4km stretch of virgin, downhill, singletrack which has been built specifically to link Haarwegskloof with the existing De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience trail network.
PAGE 8
The third and final stage of the event also takes in a new, unexplored, region to mountain bikers. Unlike the Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve though the Fynbos Trust land, to the north west of the De Hoop Vlei, is closed to the public outside of the event; so being able to ride there is a unique treat reserved for entrants to the race. Stage three is a 50km circumnavigation of the De Hoop Vlei, utilising some familiar trails in the first 20km before entering the Fynbos Trust property and ascending the daunting “Fynbos Licker”. When taking on this climb it is important to remember that the views back down towards the vlei are truly spectacular. The stage also takes in another highlight of the event, the day’s final water point at the historic Melkkamer manor house. Riders with a less competitive nature need not be dissuaded however, as the De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience route holds more charms when undertaken at a slower speed and with an eye to absorb the beauty of the route. Tankwa Trek Adds Additional Stage For 2019
36ONE MTB 2019 Moved From April To Mid-May
Dryland Event Management – the organisers of the Momentum Health Tankwa Trek, presented by Biogen, the only UCI S1 category stage race in South Africa – are proud to announce the addition of a 4th stage to the 2019 Tankwa Trek. The new stage will take place on the afternoon of Thursday, 7 February followed by Stages 2 through 4 on the 8-10 February 2019. “We’re really excited to add a new opening stage to the Momentum Health Tankwa Trek, presented by Biogen,” Henco Rademeyer of Dryland Event Management enthused. “Since the inception of the Tankwa Trek in 2013, there has been an explosion of trails around the race village at Kaleo Manor. But we’ve never really been able to use them in the race; which is a real shame as Ernst van Dyk and his team have done a superb job building the trails.” For 2019 the UCI have changed their rules regarding stage races slightly and to maintain the Tankwa Trek’s S1 status – which ensures international stars like Manuel Fumic, Henrique Avancini, Maxime Marotte, Helen Grobert, Alban Lakata, Kristian Hynek, Nicola Rohrbach, Daniel Geismayr and Urs Huber are motivated to take part – an extra stage had to be added.

Most importantly, the addition of the extra stage does not affect the event entry fee. The additional 32 kilometres of racing – and all that entails including full medical support, a typically well-stocked Dryland water point and media coverage is therefore essentially free. The compact nature of the new Stage 1 route and the success of the 2018 live broadcast also has the Tankwa Trek’s media partners Bigshot Media exceptionally excited. “We are looking at the possibility of live streaming the short punchy stage as it would be a great teaser to showcase the strength of the world’s most prestigious four day UCI MTB stage race,” said Mark le Roux, owner of Bigshot Media.

The 36ONE has been moved a month later in 2019, from April to mid-May and will take place from the 17-19 May next year to assist the riders who spend all of Saturday out on the roads of the Klein Karoo. This should ensure that the daytime temperatures are milder, though it does come at the cost of lower over-night temperatures – which are concerns which overshoes, First Ascent base-layers and wind-breakers can easily remedy. For riders taking on the full 361 kilometre distance in teams or solo the advantage of entering early, lies in the commitment the race demands to each riders’ training. Entering early ensures ample time to train physically, prepare mentally and develop nutritional strategies to ensure the challenge is a manageable, and even an enjoyable, one. While the main focus remains the solo riders taking on the complete route The 36ONE will also feature Relay and Half distance events next year. The Relay provides riders the chance to ride in squads of two to four riders and alternate the legs of the race they cycle. The most well-established format is for two riders to take on the challenge, with one cycling legs one and three, while the other races legs two and four. 2018 saw the late introduction of a gravel bike category in The Half and in 2019 the race organisers expect the category to grow. “The gravel bike category in The Half at The 36ONE provides one of the biggest tests of a rider’s grit and determination. Less than 10% of that section of the route is on tar and there are a few quite corrugated stretches of gravel road too. Throw in the Rooiberg Pass descent, without suspension, and you have a very challenging ride. Anyone who finishes The Half on a gravel bike is seriously tough,” said Henco Rademeyer, co-founder of Dryland Event Management. For more information visit www.the36one.co.za

ROBERT DU PREEZ RECOVERING AFTER ACCIDENT
On Sunday, 3 June 2018 during the Cyclosportif #3, presented by the Pedal Power Association (PPA), a cycling accident en route from Hermon towards Wellington (R44) occurred in which Robert Du Preez was injured when a vehicle crashed into a group of riders.
Robert remembered everything. He was focusing ahead and not behind when he was struck by a vehicle. On impact Robert was flung onto the bonnet, then slid off and landed in the yellow lane, sat up, only to discover his right leg was pointing in the wrong direction. Immediately after the accident his cycling group stopped to assist and Robert was taken to Paarl Provincial Hospital. He sustained an open fracture of the Tibia and Fibular bones of the right leg and aberrations to his right hip, knee, shoulder and lower back, as well as left knee, wrist and buttock. He waited 3 days before going into theatre to have an x-fix set into his leg. After the surgical procedure, Robert was transferred to Grootte Schuur Hospital where the final procedure was done on Sunday, 10 June. The x-fix was removed and a titanium nail fitted, opposed to a frame that would have delayed the total recovery period for 6-9 months. The doctors are confident that he will be able to bear weight on his leg within 2 weeks. “We are in contact with the family and we will keep you posted on his condition. We hope that he will recover soon. The PPA already contacted the chairman of Western Cape Cycling and will assist to ensure that the correct processes and procedures are followed. If anyone witnessed the accident, please feel free to contact us at the PPA office,” the PPA said in a statement on 4 June 2018. The PPA went out of their way to assist Robert. Mr Robert Vogel, Pedal Power Association CEO, visited Robert. “The priority now is for him to make a speedy recovery and from the PPA office, we wish him all the best on that Photo: Robert Du Preez - Photo Credit: Dan Edwards journey. Our staff have been in touch with Robert’s mother and his girlfriend, answering queries and providing information as best we can. Since Robert’s mom called me on Sunday morning, asking for an update on his condition, I have tried to get as much information about the accident as I could,” Mr Vogel said. “I called Mike Bradley of Cycling South Africa (CSA), to confirm if Robert’s membership entitled him to medical membership benefits as a CSA member. Mike confirmed that Robert was covered, as PPA events are on the CSA calendar and therefore sanctioned. Mike has been assisting in getting the claim submitted and we processed all documents as requested. CSA are also facilitating the claim with the Road Accident Fund, which Roadcover will follow up on Robert’s behalf,” Mr Vogel continued. “They all have been phenomenal, everybody came and helped,” Robert said. Presently Robert’s health is in good shape, his leg is healing rapidly, and since the last operation he is undergoing physio. After the doctors assessed the wound, Robert was discharged from the hospital on 15 June 2018. In the meantime, Robert’s friends are raising awareness on the BackaBuddy campaign to assist him with medical expenses and other related costs as he could not work during this period. Robert is employed by Playball, a franchise company in Rondebosch focusing on child development coaching basic ball skills, movement skills, and stability skills. He also works part-time for Breakaway Rides doing mountain biking coaching sessions around Cape Town, Tygerberg and the Winelands area. Tragically, Robert’s limited edition S-Works custom bike did not survive the accident. Revolution bikes will assist him once he has recovered from his accident with a new bike. “I will be on a new bike as soon as I am on a new leg”, Robert said. Robert’s desire is to return to cycling as soon as possible. A message to fellow cyclists from Robert: “Don’t be discouraged. Cycling is such a great sport. I wouldn’t want anyone to give up the sport because of an incident, neither would like to see anyone stop riding because of such an incident as mine.” It was confirmed that the driver of the vehicle reported the incident at the Wellington Police station just after 10h00 on the morning of the accident .The PPA will follow the police investigation closely and ensure that it runs its course without unnecessary delays.

SAFETY
SAFER ROADS IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY Aside from it being against the law in South Africa to cycle without a helmet, a head injury can have permanent side-effects . Another important safety rule is not to listen to music while you ride; if you can’t hear the cars around you, you can’t avoid potential accidents. Obey road rules like any other road user - As a cyclist, you’re expected to follow the same rules of the road as anyone else. Although you have the advantage of being able to cycle in the yellow line or on bike lanes, you still have to stop at stop streets and red lights, giving way when you are required to, and being considerate towards your fellow road users, including drivers and pedestrians. Be considerate at all times - Cyclists know that not all drivers are considerate of cyclists, but drivers are still in a position of power compared to a cyclist. Don’t hold on to cars to hitch a lift or keep your balance; and avoid hurling abuse or swearing at motorists for the same reason that road rage is a bad strategy when you’re in your car: things can escalate quickly. Keep yourself safe by keeping your cool. Photo Credit: Reblex Photography
Drivers and cyclists are on the same side. We all breathe the same air, live in the same neighbourhoods, use the same shops, our kids go to the same schools– and we all want safer roads. Speed is a major contributor to the death toll on our roads. Collisions, which exceed 45km/h, give cyclists a less than 50% chance of survival. Even if a cyclist is hit at slower speeds, they face suffering severe injuries. “Always look out for cyclists on the road,” says CEO Robert Vogel of the Pedal Power Association. “There is this belief that cyclists have less right to the road and should keep out of a motorist’s way. Both have equal rights on the road. We need mutual respect and tolerance among all road users,” says Vogel. “Remember that when you need to turn or change lanes, there could be a cyclist next to you. Make an extra effort to double check your blind spot and mirrors, before you turn or change lanes. Motorists also need to be aware of cyclists approaching from the front, when intending to cross the path of oncoming traffic. Drivers should not underestimate the speed of a cyclist,” Vogel explains.“If we all obey the rules and showed a bit of courtesy to other road users, we’d realise that our journey is not more important than the journey of any other person. We’d reduce speed, stop overtaking on white lines and skip red lights. Motorists hold the key to making roads safer for everyone.”

“Be sure to keep yourself safe on our roads and be the best cyclist you can possibly be; every time you head out, you’re an ambassador for all cyclists on the road. This is a great responsibility; don’t take it lightly. The same goes for motorists. You need to remember, you must give a cyclist a gap of at least 1 metre when passing. A driver is allowed to cross a solid line to give the cyclist the required gap, if it is safe for him or her to do so. If in doubt, don’t pass the cyclist and wait for an opportunity to pass safely. Space and time saves lives”, Vogel concludes. For more information visit www.pedalpower.org.za

What to do in the event of an accident If a driver does knock down a cyclist, the normal duties of a driver in an event of an accident as provided by Section 61 of the Act apply: The driver must immediately stop and report the accident to the SAPS; The driver needs to check for injuries and render assistance if he is capable to do so; The driver must provide his/her details to the authorities or witnesses; The driver must report the accident as soon as possible, if a person was killed or injured it has to be reported within 24 hours after the occurrence of the accident; A vehicle involved in a fatal accident may not be removed from the scene unless authorised by a traffic official; In the event that a motorist knocks down a cyclist and the State decides to pursue a criminal case, the State will have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the driver is in fact guilty in terms of the criminal law; and Should a motorist be found guilty of reckless, negligent or inconsiderate driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a harsh sentence awaits him/her. This may include imprisonment for culpable homicide. As much as we advocate for drivers to give cyclists ample space when passing, cyclists need to obey the rules of the road as well. Some of the most important things cyclists should do in order to stay safe on the road include: Make sure you are visible - When you are out cycling, be visible by wearing bright clothing with reflective strips, attach a white light to the handlebar and a red flashing light at the back of your bike. Try and ride in a group. The more of you there are, the more visible you will be. Wear a helmet - It’s essential to ride with a good quality helmet; this is without a doubt the most important safety precaution you can take.

CYCLING EVENTS
Helderberg
All Mountain Enduro The Helderberg All Mountain Enduro will take place on 5 August 2018 at Helderberg Farm in Somerset West. The event will not have category prizes, but shuttles running for the top three stages – so ride and time them for as many times as you can! Riders get timed only on certain sections, which make a very social event, especially at the refreshment station where they re-group. The atmosphere is relaxed with no rush anywhere, except when you gun it between check points!
Storms River Traverse
The Glacier Storms River Traverse is a family friendly stage race which takes place in the Tsitsikamma coastal forests of the Eastern Cape. Taking place from the 10th to the 12th of August 2018, the event has become famous over the years for wet trail conditions and a festive atmosphere off the bike. At 64km, 50km and 43km long the stages are relatively short and the routes make use of the extensive network of forest jeep tracks, so riders can ride twoabreast and chat throughout the stages.
Though some riders choose to race, the majority of the field are focused on having a great time, so stopping to take selfies at the spectacular cliff-top view points and over indulging at the amazingly well-stocked water points is the order of the day. Because of the short distances riders 16 and older are able to take part in the event, under Cycling South Africa legislation, while for the younger family members the Tsitsikamma Village Inn provides and activity programme to keep the children entertained. For young teenagers meanwhile there are a plethora of outdoor activities on offer in the Storms River Village, including zip lining and Segway tours. Based on the successful Mavic Trans Provence concept the idea is to bring riding and the results linked back to mountain biking and away from the current endurance-only formats. That said, it is not the idea to make the race highly technical as per downhill racing, but simply to focus the competition on the trails component of the sport. And yes, perhaps your skinny tire 29’er carbon hardtail is perhaps not the best choice of bike, although the course will certainly be rideable on it! “At the Dirtopia Enduro, you’ll still be climbing and even be timed on some of these sections. We will make most of the jeeptrack and roads ‘neutral’ or ‘liaison’ sections. You will still be required to ride these. The overall descent of the race will be more than the uphill.” Waterpoint with fruit, Red Bull, nuts, and jellies etc. will be placed at a strategic point to assist with rider support. The beauty of the format is that you can relax a bit at this station and catch your breath before tagging into the next Special Stage. For more information visit www.dirtopia.co.za
Langeberg Link MTB Langeberg Link MTB will take place over the Heritage long weekend from 22-24 September 2018 and will be based at Oudewerf Farm, Kliphoogte, east from the Swellendam N2/R60 intersection. Set in the most beautiful farming landscape, with cycling routes through canola fields, in, up, and through the Langeberg mountains overlooking the Overberg as far as the eye can see, with Bonnievale in the west, and Swellendam in the east. The Langeberg Link MTB route has never before been cycled on by any race before 2017, and will once again take place on the same route, situated mostly on private land, not open to the public – thus ensuring the uniqueness of the event. The track, where access is limited, is purposely designed that cyclists can enjoy the overwhelming beauty of fauna and flora in the area and experience some breathtaking views of waterfalls. The race is open to all mountain bike enthusiasts. Riders can choose between a long route, or a short route. The event also offers Solo and Team entries in all three days, or single days. A reason for having a 3-day MTB event in the area was to identify and establish an event that will benefit and involve the local community, whilst also ensuring the longevity and sustainability of such a mountain bike race. This year, the finish-line for all three days will be inside the large barn. This will enable riders to feel part of the hospitality of the local people, who will be on hand to provide refreshments to tired riders. Hybrid Track Winter Series This unique Hybrid Track Winter Series will take place at the Oudtshoorn Oval Track on 8 July and 22 July 2018 respectively. The Hybid Track format of racing will take your fitness to the next level and is a mixture of track cycling and MTB on a dirt oval track. In other words, you will be racing track cycling events on your MTB on a dirt oval track. This concept is safe, spectator friendly, and exiting. At the end of the series all riders that completed the series will receive a special finisher’s medal and the overall category winners will receive a special trophy. This unique way of racing was introduced to riders two years ago by Jakhals Events in collaboration with Eden Cycling. Eden does not have a cycling track, and therefore the idea of Hybrid Track Racing was born. Several track races are being raced for eg. Individual TT, Pursuits, Scratch Races, Points and the most exciting one for the spectators – The Devil. The Devil gets the hind really takes the riders out of their comfort zone and spectators to the point of their seats. Every lap is a sprint to the line and the last riders gets called off – eventually leaving two riders to sprint for the gold and silver. For more information contact Jakhals Events on 074 260 2871

MANAGING THE EFFECTS OF MULTI-STAGE EVENTS ON KIDNEY FUNCTION
During each ABSA Cape Epic, Mediclinic deploys a team of clinicians, ranging from doctors and nurses to emergency medical personnel, to assist any rider in difficulty.
“Understanding our riders and their health is of the utmost importance to us. We are happy that the participants understand that we are here to help and are engaging with us on their health needs,” Dr Jann Killops, Mediclinic race doctor, believes that the overall health of the riders is a priority for the medical team. Because of the nature of the Epic – eight stages along intense routes, often in high temperatures – the chance of renal damage by riders remains a concern for medical staff. When riders are retrieved from the course or present themselves to the race hospital with symptoms of dehydration, the team applies a well-oiled process to evaluate the rider and the risk to his/her organs. With the help of Pathcare, on-site during the race, Dr Killops’ team perform real time blood tests, which allows them to monitor the on-going hydration levels of the riders under observation. During an average epic race about 180 tests are performed to measure hydration of the riders. As part of the 2018 edition of the race, diligent care was placed on investigating riders’ health with daily tests for at-risk riders. Eight riders were removed from the race and referred to Dr Geoff Bihl, a Nephrologist at Mediclinic Vergelegen, for additional care. Most of these patients received treatment for a combination of severe dehydration (>7% body weight), rhabdomyolysis (the Photo: Simon Stiebjahn - Photo Credit: Nina Zimolong/Cape Epic/SPORTZPICS/ Absa Cape Epic breakdown of muscle), and this can lead to life threatening blood Any event in extreme conditions and prolonged time on the bike would fit the profile. Dr Bihl suggests electrolyte abnormalities i.e. potassium, acute kidney injury or simple adjustments like starting the riders who are likely to be on the bike for longer earlier in the day heat stroke. We would like to thank Dr Bihl and his team at Mediclinic Vergelegen for the care of riders leaving the Absa Cape Epic. While the Epic is one of the best known extreme events in cycling, these risks are not isolated to this race.
