GET IN SHAPE FOR SA'S PREMIER ENDURANCE ROAD CYCLING EVENT OF THE YEAR!

Photo: Coronation Double Century 2017 - Photo Credit Craig Kolesky

Coronation Fund Managers, the Pedal Power Association and the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust can’t wait to welcome 245 teams of up to 12 cyclists, support drivers, friends and families to the 2018 edition of the Coronation Double Century on Saturday, 24 November 2018. This iconic event, now in its 26th year will once again take place on the spectacular 202km route around the Overberg, starting and finishing in Swellendam. “We’re looking forward to hosting a wide range of cyclists again this year,” commented David Bellairs, a director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust (CTCTT).

“From the top pros and elites down to the weekend warriors. It’s the team spirit and the overall vibe that makes this event so special.” The Coronation Double Century is a true test of endurance and skill. Pedalling in excess of 200km in the space of 10 hours is a demanding task, even for pro cyclists. Most individuals who exercise regularly can finish a 100km ride quite easily, but a 202km ride is a different story, both physically and mentally. Here are some tips to follow in the lead up to this challenging event: Continue Reading Page 2

Stage 2 took riders into the Eastern half of De Hoop Nature Reserve where whale watching opportunities reign supreme. The De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience saved the truly unique for last and final stage of the race covered a section of private land otherwise inaccessible to the general public. Known as Vogel Rivier the north-western shoreline of the De Hoop Vlei offers spectacular views and unique riding on jeep tracks, being reclaimed by fynbos following years of abandonment. Riders had the opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery, pass surrounding farms where wheat and canola fields grow in the Overberg sun, while Merino sheep graze alongside blue cranes. As cyclists traversed through the nature reserve they viewed antelope, rare birds, diverse floral kingdoms and the different landscape of mountains, limestone hills, grassy plains and snow white sand dunes from the saddle of their bikes.

ISSUE #22

Anneke Viljoen, Race Director of Overberg MTB Events and the De Hoop Collection have worked tirelessly for months to bring together a mix of established, virgin and usually off-limits trails to create a compact, challenging and rewarding route for riders to enjoy – and yes, they did succeed in style. Route guru, Neil Neethling, ensured the route passed by all the most beautiful sights of the area. The opening stage of the De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience took riders in some of the best established trails around the reserve and explored one of the protected areas of international significance, the Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve.

The race village was set up at the De Hoop Collection with magnificent views of the De Hoop Vlei with restaurant, a swimming pool, and spa facilities. Riders had the option to stay in tented accommodation, or upgrade to De Hoop Collection’s many family self-catering cottages as well as luxury suites for those who wanted to be spoiled.

Riders did not only encounter the excitement and exhilaration of the ride, but also had the opportunity to stop at Koppie Alleen and spot the large number of whales and their calves during whale season. Surely many cyclists had close-up encounters with Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Eland, Baboons and Ostrich as they cycled through the rich fynbos plains or along the deserted coastline. There we plenty of outdoor activities in the truly “family friendly” reserve to keep the families entertained while mom or dad were cycling, which included the likes of an Eco Boat Cruise trip on the vlei, whale watching or taking a journey to the cliffs of Potberg Mountain to view the endangered Cape Vultures – the Western Cape’s last surviving colony of these amazing birds. There were even helicopter rides available to explore the beautiful landscape from the air with an added bonus to see the whales. This amazing experience was captured by the photographers of Oakpics.com who excelled in their profession capturing the most beautiful scenes, sharing their experience on camera. “We would like to thank William and Nini Stephens of De Hoop Collection, and their friendly staff for hosting an amazing weekend. The food was excellent, the vibe during the event was amazing, and the feedback from the cyclists was excellent. Anneke, you have most definitely made De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience a winner on the annual MTB Calendar; Well done!” – Into Cycling Newspaper.

SIM AND MUNNIK FAMILIES TAKE ON THE DR EVIL CLASSIC! Robert Sim and Oliver Munnik are no strangers to the sharp end of mountain bike stage races, but both men decided to rather take it easy during the 2018 BUCO Dr Evil Classic and ride with their wives. Annette Sim and Alana Munnik were among the 45 women in the 300 odd rider field, where enjoying the beautiful Garden Route scenery is without a doubt the primary aim. “I did this event last year and had a lot of fun” Robert Sim recounted after the 70 kilometre long opening stage. “Afterwards I thought to myself it would be a great event to do with my wife, so here we are! Today was great and I hope it’s the first of many,” the reigning Absa Cape Epic Grand Masters champion said. “I have to reiterate what Rob said,” Oliver Munnik began. “Except it’s my first BUCO Dr Evil Classic. We really enjoyed it. The route today wasn’t intimidating at all. Alana isn’t that confident on switchbacks and technical singletrack yet. But the route today really lends itself to people who are looking for a confidence inspiring ride,” he advised. “For our wives it’s great and for us it’s fantastic because we get to spend time with them,” Munnik smiled, knowing his wife was listening in. “Maybe next year I will be able to get our two kids to come join us too,” Sim concluded. The young local team of Aidan Connelly and Rogan Smart, racing in the colours of The Bike Shop/SCOTT/Strocam wrapped up the 2018 BUCO Dr Evil Classic in style. The pair dominated the event, winning all three stages overall and in the men’s team competition – and while the predominant spirit at the BUCO Dr Evil Classic is one of taking part to enjoy the scenery, there were a few riders keen to mix it up with Connelly and Smart. After two days of gravel roads and jeep tracks, were breath-taking scenery was the order of the day the final stage featured the region’s best singletracks. Starting at Cairnbrogie, where the coastal trails provided views over the Indian Ocean the

day took in the deep indigenous Harkerville Forests too as route director Leon Evans saved the best for last. For many of the BUCO Dr Evil Classic field the riding fun did not end in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday afternoon as a large number of the Dr Evil riders took on the BUCO Karoo to Coast - making use of the guaranteed B Batch start at the largest single day mountain bike event in South Africa.

CRAIG BOYES VICTORIOUS AT 2018 KAROO TO COAST however, as the accumulation of meters of elevation gained stacked up and the constant vibrations of racing across gravel roads at high speeds increased the rate at which fatigue set in. Not even race winner Boyes was immune from the effects of the gruelling race. He, Matthew Keyser (Sliverback Volvo) and fellow Specialized Stellenbosch compatriot Waylon Woolcock broke away from the rest of the field on the ‘Ou Wapad’ descent. The trio shared turns on the front, ensuring none of the pursuers could catch them. With 45 kilometres to go Woolcock attacked, distancing Boyes and Keyser by 20 seconds on a long and grinding climb. On the descent which followed the light-weight Woolcock could not maintain his advantage as the larger Boyes and Keyser used their momentum to good effect – closing the gap by the 40 kilometre mark.

The 2018 BUCO Karoo to Coast was won by Craig Boyes and Pauline Tunstead in remarkably different fashions, on Sunday, the 23 September 2018. Boyes held off his breakaway companions in a sprint for the line, while Tunstead slowly ground down the women’s field on the route’s long climbs of the Prince Alfred’s Pass, between Uniondale and Knysna. Held in near perfect conditions; which saw the first section of gravel road known as the, ‘Ou Wapad’, smoother than it has been for years and in presently mild temperatures the 2018 BUCO Karoo to Coast was one for the history books. 4 600 riders made the twentieth edition the largest ever field and only a light head wind provided a hint of natural difficulty. It was anything but an easy day on the bike

Fatigue and cramps then began to set in for Boyes, but he managed to hang on to the others. Rounding the final bend, Keyser carried too much speed and found himself up against the railings. Boyes, though, paced this final corner to perfection carrying enough speed to exit the corner with the necessary momentum to beat Keyser to the line. The young Silverback Volvo rider had to be content with second and the King of the Mountain prize, while Woolcock rolled across the line in third, ten seconds behind the victorious Boyes. In the women’s race Pauline Tunstead sealed a victory which had even the winner herself surprised. Knysna local, Nicky Giliomee had fought her way clear of the rest of the women’s field, to claim the Queen of the Mountain hotspot prize; but Tunstead reeled her in thereafter. On the Buffelsnek climb, with 38 kilometres left to race, Tunstead managed to distance Giliomee. The Journey by Junto rider simply did not have the legs to follow the relentless pace set by rider from Port Elizabeth in the closing kilometres. Joining Tunstead and Giliomee on the women’s podium was Nadia Visser.

ALAN HATHERLY CLAIMS GOLD AT U/23 UCI MTB CHAMPIONSHIPS

MARTIN CILLIERS

WINNER OF LANGEBERG LINK MTB

Alan Hatherly, rider for Team Spur and Commonwealth bronze medallist has claimed gold in the men’s U23 cross-country race on 7 September 2018. A UCI World Championship gold medal has been missing from South African XCO racers’ achievements since 2009 when the late Burry Stander won the men’s U23 UCI World Championships in Australia.

Photo: Alan Hatherly Photo Credit: UCI/Cerveny

Alan Hatherly, Cape Town-based rider raced in the cross-country discipline, and improved on his second place to Kiwi Sam Gaze at last year’s world championships in Australia. In the 2014 African Youth Games in Botswana Alan was the youngest member of Team SA and has blossomed and realised his rich potential. South Africa’s Julian Jessop finished in 41th position.

Mariske Strauss Team recorded a career-best The tables turned on Saturday, 8 September 2018 when Mariske Strauss, Silverback OMX Pro Team recorded a career-best 19th place at Cross-Country World Championship in Switzerland. With a strong performance from the start, the South African was able to show her strength on the World stage. Strauss’s best finish to date at World Championships came last year when she was 24th in Cairns, Australia. UCI MTB World Marathon Championships - Auronzo, Italy 15 September Matt Beers, rider for Team NAD Pro was the highest-placed South Africa in the gruelling 102km race which comprised 4 200m of ascent. Matt seeded 157th, and finished 35th in a field of 167 of the best mountain-bikers from around the world. Other South African rider results: Alan Hatherly (55), Julian Jessop (66), Nico Bell (79), Phillimon Sebona (91), Willem Le Roux (123) and Matthys Beukes (DNF). Robyn De Groot was the highest-placed SA woman contender after finishing 23rd, while Candice Lill placed 24th, Mariske Strauss 33rd and Yolande de Villiers 47th.

3-DAY REEDS LADIES MTB TOUR

Photo: Martin Cilliers

Martin Cilliers from Cape Town was ecstatic to be the overall winner of the Langeberg Link MTB, hosted on the Heritage Weekend from 22-24 September 2018 just outside Swellendam on the OudeWerf farm. The event showcased a true farm feeling of Overberg hospitality from the moment the race commenced at the barn. Now in its second year the event witnessed a significant increase in rider numbers taking on the Langeberg mountain terrain. The first day followed an undulating route through several working farms and the 'patchwork' of fields of several crops, some freshly harvested, others, soon to be provided the riders with magnificent scenery. The second day was more challenging and riders were 'introduced' to the real Langeberg mountain range. The challenge of the day also crowned a ‘king' and ‘queen' of the mountain. There was also a challenge to the rider who managed to cycle furthest up a particular hill, before being forced to carry his bike to the top. Interestingly, this goal was not achieved by one of the front riders, but by a very accomplished cyclist further down the field. The third day - it being a new route, was a combination of day one and day two with some extras.

The 3-day Reeds Ladies MTB Tour mountain bike event took place from 31 August to 2 September 2018 at Wederom Guest Farm located in the picturesque wine-producing valley of Robertson. The 3-day Ladies MTB Tour was the perfect way to conclude Woman’s Month celebrations. Each stage started and finished at Wederom Guest farm and after three days the ladies covered a distance of 215km along the Breede river, wine farms and endured the trails in and around Robertson and the Rooiberg area. The cyclists experienced limited single track during the 3-days. The ride captains, Bonita Malherbe and Philip Grobbelaar accompanied the group of 23 riders throughout the different routes over the 3-day cycling experience. A few cyclists from East London enjoyed the event so much, they promised to be back next year with more team mates from their cycling club.

The cyclists really appreciated the fact that they were allowed onto routes that would not otherwise be open to the public. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the farmers for letting us traverse their land.” Having completed three ABSA Cape Epic events, Martin came out on top, winning all three stages. Martin has over the years participated in almost every MTB throughout the country, excluding the Joburg2c and Sani2c. He came to participate in the Langeberg Link as he is always looking for a new challenge. Martin describes the Langeberg Link MTB as follows: “The event is an absolute must for every cyclist.” He added that the route had its challenges with some technical sections, yet, it was an awesome challenge, and should not to be missed. The fourth Annual 3-day Ladies MTB will take place from 30 August to 1 September 2019 and will cost R4,250.00 per rider, which will include; back-up vehicle support, a cycling shirt, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunch packs, 3 suppers, and 3 night accommodation at the Wederom Wine Farm Guest House will play host to the 2019 Ladies MTB event. Reeds and Racepace will once again be the official sponsors of this magnificent event bringing the cyclist closer to the various biospheres and the beauty of nature. PAGE 4

“I will be back next year with my friends to overcome that one technical section in which I was forced to carry my bike the last few metres to the top,” Martin concludes. The riders described the challenge as: “Awesome! Awesome! Awesome,” as they passed the marshals along the way. Another successful Langeberg Link MTB – done and dusted! Don’t miss out next year on this challenging MTB event set amidst a great farming community. This is cycling life at its best, being among farmers who share every moment of your challenge. Western and Southern Cape wraps up

a ‘successful’ regional leg of the Spur MTB Schools League Mountain biking buffs in the Southern and Western Cape have concluded the regional leg of the Spur Schools MTB League, and now it’s all systems go for the Inter-schools final in Magaliesburg in October. According to Western Cape race coordinator Michelle du Preez, riders pedalled-off from Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch and she described the event as a great end to a phenomenal, action-packed regional season. 645 riders participated in the event, with a total of 2 708 entries for the season. That’s a 21% increase in entries since last season. “We’ve seen immense growth in our province this year, which has been exciting to witness,” says Du Preez. She says riders clocked in a whopping 21 528,9 kilometres and a total of 6 242 laps throughout the season. The region’s schools heading to the inter-schools final in Magaliesburg are: Paul Roos Gymnasium, Parel Vallei High School, HTS Drostdy, Durbanville High School, and DF Malan. Meanwhile, in the Southern Cape, riders also enjoyed a bumper MTB day. Riders hopped onto their saddles at Knysna Montessori School and pedalled a total of 1 546 kilometres and covered 618 laps on the day. With a total of 7 645 kilometres and 2 865 laps for the season. There was a total of 855 entries this season, an increase of almost 65% from last season! “What an incredible track, especially since it had only a year to recover after the devastating Knysna fires. Montessori really used the opportunity to do quite a bit of re-designing, and the flow was so much better. Of course, all of this couldn’t be done without a bit of funding from the League,” says Southern Cape race coor-

dinator Juan Botes. The Southern Cape schools that are going through to the inter-schools final are: Outeniqua High School and Oakhill High School. The League, currently in its tenth year is South Africa’s largest high school cycling programme and the main nursery for talent in the sport.

The historic 10th edition of the ‘Race with Soul’ is fast approaching

The iconic Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek presented by Biogen from 14 - 20 October 2018 promises to live up to all rugged expectations in what looks to be one of the most memorable editions yet. With a true pioneering spirit, the team at Dryland has been hard at work blazing new and exciting single-track sections that will feature in most of the seven stages in store. One of the biggest draw cards will come right at the start with the return of the ever popular Mossel Bay Prologue.

The route will be a good preparation for the epic week ahead with exhilarating cliff-hugging trails and a 500m vertical ascent that mostly happens in the first four kilometres! There will also be a never-seen-before elevated single-track crossing over some sections of water at the Point. The route runs past the old Lighthouse, famous Mossel Bay Cave and onto an elevated track over rocks and breaking waves. With the 10th edition comes what is arguably the biggest change the event has seen. For those who find the 496km route slightly daunting, Dryland Event Management has introduced a four-day race that will give adventure-seekers a taste of what the main event is all about. The Cape Pioneer Trek Adventure will cover roughly 280km’s and includes the traditional ascent of Montagu Pass, crossing of the Klein Karoo and breathtaking Swartberg Pass summit. As top local and international athletes prepare for this iconic test of grit, event organiser Henco Rademeyer comments: “It has been a privilege to be involved with the Pioneer since inception. I vividly remember during 2007 and 2008 how we scouted the routes, visited the schools and set the plans in action to bring this event to the Southern Cape – little did we know that someday we would celebrate 10 successful years.”

Photo: Cape Pioneer Trek - Photo Credit: www.zcmc.co.za

“We knew right from the start that we wanted to include the communities in the areas where we host the race. After all, the race belongs to everyone whose land we cross during the seven days! We have also decided that in year 11 we will go back to our pioneering roots, and visit areas that have become icons in the mountain biking world like the Kammanassie Mountains and Swartberg mountain top finish.”

Kruger, McDougall Fedhealth MTB Challenge Champions HB Kruger and Amy McDougall took no prisoners in the Fedhealth MTB Challenge +- 60km/Marathon at Boschendal Farm Estate, The Retreat on 16 September 2018. With three events to choose from (a +-60km/Marathon; a +- 30km/Half Marathon and a 15km Fun Ride), the 4th annual Fedhealth MTB challenge catered for all levels of mountain bikers, delivering plenty of mountain biking challenges, heaps of family fun and a scenic day out of the city. Crossing the finish line HB Kruger was very happy to successfully defend his title on the day with Nicol Carstens in second, while Dylan Rebello finished third. As a local HB trains at Boschendal often and knows the routes well. He had a mechanical at round about the 10km mark when his chain fell off, he chased back and managed to catch Nicol Carstens and Dylan Rebello. They rode together for approximately 20km, and after Skyfall HB managed to open a gap. Making her Fedhealth MTB Challenge debut on the day, Amy McDougall secured victory in the women’s +-60km/Marathon. She recently moved from Johannesburg and have only heard good things about the event. “I went as hard as I could from the start, but had a bad crash at round about 40km. I was a bit shaken, but had so much fun,” she said. Defending champion, Jamie Penfold was the rider to beat in the men’s +-30km/ Half Marathon, crossing the finish line first with Johan van Zyl in second, while Leon Claassen finished third. Natia van Heerden was the rider to beat in the women’s +-30km/Half Marathon. Oliva Penfold came in second, while Caela Whall finished third. at Boschendal Farm Estate! We hope you enjoyed the trails, the scenery, and the atmosphere… and that you got to relax post-race in true Boschendal style. Apart from the fitness aspect, our aim with this event has always been to create an opportunity for families to enjoy quality time together whilst embracing a healthy lifestyle. I’m delighted to see so many youngsters join their parents – keep up the good work!” says Jeremy Yatt, Fedhealth Principal Officer. Once across the finish line, all mountain bikers were treated to a foot massage in the Falke Foot Zone. The Festival Village was a hub of excitement with riders enjoying a Flying Fish beer with a mouth-watering Spur Burger while listening to a live performance by Newton & Co.

Mountain Biking in the Marloth Nature Reserve Marloth Nature Reserve is named after the pioneer botanist who, together with a deputation of Swellendam residents, petitioned the Minister of Lands and Forestry in 1928 to set aside part of the mountain as a nature reserve. During 1981, the reserve was enlarged to include the rest of the State Forest and the Swellendam hiking trail was opened. The reserve’s vegetation is predominantly mountain fynbos, with patches of forest. There are several species of Protea and more than 25 species of erica, most of which flower in November. Marloth, like the rest of the Southern Cape, has hot summers and cold winters. The higher mountain peaks are occasionally dusted in snow during the cold winter months. The Marloth Mountain Bike trails cross over into plantation and municipal areas consisting mostly out of jeep track with small sections of single-track. Green Route: The Green Route covers a distance of 9km with a climb of 210 metres and can take from 30 minutes to 1h30 minutes to complete. The route is not very technical or difficult. Blue Route: The Blue Route covers a distance of 16km with a climb of 320 metres and can take from 1h30 minutes to 2h30 minutes to complete. The route is not very technical, nor difficult. Red Route: The Route covers a distance of 28km with a climb of 810 metres and can take from 2 hours to 3h30 minutes to complete. The red route is for skilled riders with some technical sections and single track. Expect lots of climbing per kilometre and speeds of between 8-15km/h.

The Routes follow an anticlockwise direction. All routes form a circle, and you will end up wherever you started. Mountain Bike permits are available at the Swellendam Tourism Info office in Berg Street, opposite the Drostdy. Only mountain bikers that have signed the Friends of Marloth Indemnity form and CapeNature permit, may enter Nature Reserve from the Marloth Main Office, situated near the Swellendam Golf Course. Locals need to obtain Friends of Marloth Membership, while non-Locals will need to acquire a Cape Nature day permit that will cost R40. Open Google Maps on your smart-phone and switch on your GPS and you should be able to navigate yourself. Enjoy some of the best views possible on a mountain bike! LOURENSFORD ESTATE

Lourensford Estate - Home to World-class Wine & Mountain Biking Mountain bikers have the priviledge of experiencing one of the world’s most beautiful wine estates during the FNB Wines2Whales. Nestled in the basin of the Helderberg Mountains, the 4000-hectare Lourensford Estate has many gravel trails and pristine single tracks with scenic climbs, flowing paths and thrilling descents among vineyards, forest, fynbos and fruit orchards. The spectacular setting in Somerset West is as ideal for making world class wine as it is for mountain biking, so it should come as no surprise that Cellarmaster Hannes Nel will be among the riders when the FNB W2W returns to Lourensford for the 10th year in late October 2018. “I am fortunate to work and live on Lourensford, so I do all of my riding and training here on the estate,” says Hannes, who competed in his first W2W in 2009. His mountain bike is a crucial tool in his award winning wine making. “The best way for me to monitor the vineyards is by bicycle. I am able to cover much more ground than I can in a vehicle, and I can cycle in between the rows to inspect the development of the grapes,” he explains. “Cycling also helps me to strategise and plan the outcome of each vineyard, and brings me much closer to the vines.” Lourensford General Manager Koos Jordaan says through the partnership with W2W, the estate has been able to give riders access to what he believes are some of the best and scenic trails in the Western Cape and the exclusive opportunity to experience Lourensford‘s majestic beauty.

Stage 1 of the FNB W2W will take riders on a journey through Lourensford along trails such as Schoemans, Witboom and Canary before moving on towards Oak Valley Estate in Elgin. Better, faster flow can be expected after recent reconstruct of specific sections and the addition of berms, as well as two new sections: JK’S Contour and Old Pines. More open roads between the single track, which starts 12km after the start, ensure sufficient passing zones.

“Ten years ago, the first W2W trails were built on Lourensford. This event is a showcase of natural, diverse beauty and has enlightened thousands of mountain bikers over the years,” says Koos. “Respect for our rich biodiversity and environmental sustainability is at the core of what we do, and we are proud of the Conservation Champion status bestowed on us by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Consequently we aim to curate, care for and capture the essence of nature and our beautiful terroir in the wines that we create.”

The elegant new flagship range, Chrysalis, is the culmination of years of dedication and passion to capture the essence of Lourensford’s unique terroir in a wine. Explaining the symbolism of the name for the flagship range, Hannes says: “Nothing demonstrates the evolution of these wines better than the remarkable metamorphosis of the tiny chrysalis. For me the bottle symbolizes the pupa with the beautiful butterfly developing inside. Pouring the wine into your glass releases the rare butterfly, completing the metamorphosis of grapes into a wine of intense complexity.” Wine bottle labels also provide an opportunity to celebrate Lourensford’s natural riches: both the River Garden Classique and River Garden Flower Collection ranges are inspired by the pristine Lourens River running through the estate and the award winning gardens planted and curated by the legendary Keith Kirsten;

the new Limited Release labels display subtle references to the Fish Eagle, Cape Mountain Leopard, Caracal, Owl and Duiker that make their home on Lourensford. Even the popular Dome Chardonnay and Dome Pinot Noir wines reference the highest peak of the majestic Helderberg mountain which overlooks the estate. Registered FNB W2W participants looking to get a Stage 1 preview and a sneak peek at the natural wonders of Lourensford are invited to two 25km Pre- rides on either Sunday, 30 September or Sunday, 14 October. The Preride registrations are at 8.30am at the Coffee Roastery Company and entry costs R100, which includes a bottle of River Garden Classique Shiraz 2016. It’s essential that FNB W2W participants pre-book at www.lourensford.co.za/event-directory/ Rider registration for FNB W2W happens from 2pm the day before each race on Thursday, 25 October (Chardonnay), Sunday, 28 October (Pinotage) and Thursday, 1 November (Shiraz) at the Lourensford Winery. “I am looking forward to this year’s race and being able to share the trails I love so much with my fellow riders. Having unveiled some spectacular new releases this year, including the flagship Chrysalis White Blend and Chrysalis Red Blend as well as The Dome Pinot Noir, I also hope everyone takes a few minutes to explore our delicious wines on offer at our winery and takes home a bottle or three for post race celebrations!” quipped Hannes.

ASHLEIGH MOOLMAN-PASIO TO JOIN TEAM CCC IN 2019 WaowDeals Pro Cycling or CCC, as the team will be called in 2019, has set the sports goals high, with the joining of Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (32), the currently number 4 rider on the world ranking, the team is aiming high in classics and stage races.

The South African is the first transfer that has been completed at the moment. “After four wonderful years with my current team, I now am ready for the next step. With the transition to CCC, I hope I can improve myself and above all, win more prizes. During this season, I have gathered numeral places of honor, but I also want to be on the highest podium step more often”, says Ashleigh, who rode seven major classics this season and finished in the top 10 each time. In the Flèche Wallone she was even second. “At CCC, I am surrounded in a professional organisation with good cyclists who make it possible to head further to the top of the world. The past has proven that everyone who starts riding in this team, becomes stronger. Dani Rowe for instance, she has her best season ever. A lot of young talents have broken through. In last week’s Lotto Belgium Tour, I have watched the team with a lot of interest and appreciation”. Team manager Eric van den Boom: “We see Ashleigh as an experienced, all round rider with added value for the team. She knows what to do on hills and mountains and time trialing is a discipline she masters as well. She rides on a high level and has kept that level the whole season.” “It would be great if she could take that last step to the top and that she can use all her qualities to grow into being the face of the team.”

The following riders, currently also in the WaowDeals formation, will remain active in the team next season: Inge van der Heijden, Jeanne Korevaar, Riejanne Markus, Pauliena Rooijakkers, Dani Rowe, Sabrina Stultiens and Marianne Vos.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR TEAM ALFA BODYWORKS-GIANT AT BESTMED-MAKRO CHAMPIONSHIP

Cape Town cyclist, Rohan du Plooy took victory in the Bestmed-Makro Championship as Team Alfa Bodyworks/Giant registered a clean sweep in the 106km road race in Port Elizabeth on 8 September 2018. He was followed home by Alfa Bodyworks/Giant teammates, Bernard Esterhuizen in second and Nicol Carstens in third. With rain and windy conditions making life difficult for the riders, The 23-year-old Du Plooy said the team had enjoyed previous experiences of races in Port Elizabeth and had been unfazed by the weather. “Races in Port Elizabeth are really well organised, with few traffic hassles, and we thrive in those sorts of situations,” he said. The new champion, who lives in Blaauwberg, said their intention was to put pressure on the other teams early on, which was done as Esterhuizen, followed by Jack van Wyk, broke away within the first two kilometres. “I felt our team read the race very well and they were kind enough to give me the victory at the finish. Equally, I would have given it to any of them because it was a really good team effort.” “It’s great to get this win under my belt,” said Du Plooy, who won the GP Perwez one-day road race in Belgium this year. Defending champion Anriette Schoeman took the women’s elite category for her 18th title in the 19-year history of the event. She finished in a time of 3:18:21.The Africa Silks-Bestmed rider was happy to rack up another win, but acknowledged that it “was a tough day at the office”. “I lost the leading men early on and I always knew it was going to be a hard day,” said the Port Elizabeth rider. “It’s a tough route to start off with and obviously the conditions made it 10 times worse.

“There was a serious headwind and some heavy rain, and I’m just happy to have finished in one piece.”The 41-year-old Schoeman said it was the sort of day for which one had to be mentally prepared. “You sort of just switch off your brain and prepare yourself to grind it out.” She also acknowledged the race organisers, who made sure the event went off smoothly despite the testing conditions.” “The route markers were really good and the marshals did a fine job in some treacherous weather.”

BYRON MUNTON WINS WP CYCLING LEAGUE RACE AT RAITHBY The event started in very wet conditions with the U11, U13, U15 followed by the youth, Category 3 and Women’s category. The weather cleared up as Category 1 rolled onto the line. It was a fast and cold start to the 6 lap circuit with attacks early from the start as some riders tried to break away. About 5km into the race a 2 man break formed and this was soon slimmed down to one lone rider from Team AlfaBodyworks/Giant. Attacks came from Team Mad Macs, Aurucon, and Absolute motion as the riders tried to bridge across to Byron Munton, who had by lap 4 built up a solid gap. On the final lap Ruan du Plooy managed to get away and bridge to his teammate in front, making it a first and second for Team AlfaBodyworks/Giant with Byron Munton taking the win. The remainder of positions were left to a reduced bunch sprint with Wynand Hofmeyr taking third, and Rocco King from Team Mad Macs taking fourth. The winner, Cape Town based rider, Byron Munton joined Team Alfa Bodyworks/ Giant after racing for French-based Martigues Sport Cycling in Europe earlier this year. Photo Credit: Double ST

The Wannabees Cycling Club hosted another successful WP Cycling Association league race that took take place on a 10km circuit around the Winery Road and Raithby area in Somerset West on 2 September 2018.

LIFESTYLE

#RolaLifestyle = commitment + true ambassadorship How do you know if you are involved or committed? “We can give you an analogy which involves a bacon and egg breakfast, in this instance the chicken is involved and the pig committed. Funny right?” So do you remember why you started cycling? We can easily forget what inspired us to start cycling more frequently. When you face a headwind or freezing rain a couple of hours into your ride, you could wonder why you are doing this to yourself. Still, we go out weekend after weekend and enjoy this addictive sport. For most of us, cycling is as normal as breathing. So get on your bike, we’re going for a coffee ride. Within the Rola Motor Group there are many who follow and live this lifestyle. Marius Claassen (CEO), Adriaan Vlok (Volkswagen Dealer Principle), Charl Lennox (IT Manager), Cornelius Hanekom (Rola Volkswagen service manager) and André Kramer (Rola Volkswagen new vehicle sales manager) are avid cyclists, just to name a few. The Rola Motor Group endorses a healthy lifestyle and has therefore partnered with likeminded achievers who encourage, live and promote this lifestyle. Rola Volkswagen has committed and partnered up with Ariane Lüthi as our Rola Volkswagen Lifestyle Ambassador. Ariane is a true professional in the discipline of mountain biking, and even though her Twitter Bio reads “5 x Absa Cape Epic Winner and 2 x Swiss XCM Champion”, there is much more to this accomplished cyclist and member of Team Spur. Rola Volkswagen is proud to be associated with her and would like to wish her good luck with the Wines2Whales. Liezel van der Westhuizen, well-known media personality and avid cyclist and athlete, is also a Rola Motor Group brand ambassador who promotes a healthy lifestyle and supports community involvement. Her recent tandem cycle trip to the Himalayas, with visually impaired cyclist, Cindy Jacobsz, truly inspired us and showcased one of Rola’s values namely ‘serve with integrity’.

Team dormakaba appoints performance director Professional South African mountain biking outfit, team dormakaba, has been strengthened by the appointment of renowned coach and sports scientist, Dr Mike Posthumus as its performance director. The team now consists of well-known cyclists Nico Pfitzenmaier, Samantha Sanders, and Amy McDougall, with Dr Posthumus adding a vital training and sport physiology component as dormakaba further boosts its investment in the sport. “As a professional coach and sports scientist, Mike brings with him a wealth of experience and insights into elements like training periodisation and other critical training principles that will be invaluable to our team. However, Mike is also a semi-pro mountain biker and will also represent us in the senior men’s category,” says Shaun Frayne, MD of dormakaba South Africa. Even though Dr Posthumus currently coaches some of the top riders in the country and a keen mountain biker, he is a family man who is married with two children. His appointment to team dormakaba highlights how cycling is more than just a pure physical pursuit but entails a great deal of preparation, psychology, and other elements. “Training for cycling event require dedicated training, with consideration for ensuring adequate recovery between training sessions. Mike will be offering this help to not only our pro riders, but to everyone following the dormakaba channels, or chatting to Mike at events. He is someone that any amateur cyclist can identify with as he has a demanding job, family responsibilities, and still tries to get around to training and competing in events.” In many respects, Dr Posthumus illustrates the cycling lifestyle that many ordinary men and women try to embrace. Even though he will compete under the team name, he is not targeting victories but will continue to demonstrate that any person with the right dedication can achieve great things if they put their mind to it. SOUTH AFRICA’S BIKE HOTEL

Trail’s End - Where your adventure starts! Time has flown. On 1st October South Africa’s first Bike Hotel will be two years old. Apart from re-enforcing the Elgin Grabouw Valley as one of South Africa’s premier mountain biking destinations, Trail’s End is also establishing Grabouw as a major outdoor centre – within an hour’s drive from Cape Town. With the Cape Canopy Tour 15 minutes away and the newly established Elgin Railway Market just down the line by steam engine, there is a new buzz of excitement in the valley. Trail’s End is situated right in the heart of some of South Africa’s most famous mountain bike trails: A2Z (Wine2Whales), Paul Cluver, and Oak Valley to name a few. It is also a favourite venue for top mountain bike companies such as Giant, Scott, Silverback, and Specialized. Growing in popularity is the sport of trail running and with so many beautiful trails on its doorstep, Trail’s End has become a favourite trail running destination. Landie Greyling and Meg Mackenzie are regular visitors. “Look out for future coaching clinics at Trail’s End on our website and social media”, says Chad Gordon, top trail runner and Trail’s End partner. Lucy, Meg and Chad back from the Trails

When asked what stands out as significant in these past two years,

Bike maintenance is important

“This is a wonderful way to benefit our community and to introduce cycling as a green means of transport.” The project is gaining its own momentum and youngsters are getting involved in trail building, participating in mountain bike events and learning about bike maintenance. “Keen beneficiaries Wally, Thumi and Ethan regularly join us for social rides and have already participated in their first mtb events. It’s rewarding to see their progress and to witness their enthusiasm for the sport. They often take young cyclists out on the trails to impart their newly gained knowledge on the ‘newbies’. They have truly empowered themselves.”

founding member Pieter Silberbauer says, “For me and partner Chad Gordon, what has been most rewarding has been the gradual unification of the Elgin Grabouw Valley through sport. This was one of our goals when we set out to establish Trail’s End”. Most recently they have established the Grabouw parkrun. This takes place every Saturday morning, starting at Trail’s End.

Energized after a fun group ride

Amazing trails right on our doorstep

People from all walks of life are able to participate for free and receive their times, as with all parkruns, on completion of their 5km run. “This has been a great community builder and has introduced many of the locals to the sport of running, to each other, and to the many parkrun tourists who travel the country to try out different parkruns. The Grabouw parkrun is highly rated!” says Chad. Another recent collaboration has been the partnership between Trail’s End, Bike Empowerment Network (BEN), Pedal Power Association (PPA), Qhubeka and Grabouw Beautiful. Trail’s End is a strong supporter of Grabouw Beautiful, a nonprofit company that is committed to transforming Grabouw from “the inside out”.

Trail’s End is becoming more and more of a family destination as the Elgin Grabouw Valley offering increases. It has also become a popular team building and conference destination being close to Cape Town but far enough away from traffic noise and other distractions to allow for total focus. A true breakaway. Mountain bike skills training is an important part of the Trail’s End offering. Weekends with Biking in the Bosch, Daisyway Coaching and Trail Angels are very popular - not to be missed by those wishing to improve on their Epic times or novices wishing to take on this amazing sport with confidence! “To this end, we are building a new flow trail off the existing pump track to enable on-site coaching and skills training” says Pieter.

Pieter explains: “BEN, PPA and Qhubeka were looking for a pilot project in Grabouw to assist those unable to afford bicycles in obtaining them through various financial or ‘sweat equity’ models. At the same time Grabouw Beautiful was in the process of setting up a Skills and Job Creation Centre in the midst of the Klein Begin community. “Trail’s End brought the two groups together and the first project began. That was a year ago. The fourth project is already underway and nearly 100 bicycles have been awarded to deserving youngsters from Klein Begin, Rooidakke and soon, to students from the Umyeso High School”.

Learning new skills

Bicycle beneficiaries have started river cleaning and recycling projects in order to ‘earn’ their bikes.

Climbing Wall and Pump Track always a winner with the kids

Make sure to book your next adventure at Trail’s End. Whether it’s a weekend away with your family, a skills training course, or a team-building conference with your company, you are sure to have a memorable time with the Trail’s End team. COURAGEOUS WOMAN DUO CONQUERS THE HIMALAYAS Liezel van der Westhuizen and Cindy Jacobsz are the first African, South African all female blind and sighted pair to tandem cycle from Manali to Khardung La India, 18 330 feet covering 550km. Not only was it a triumphant African first when media personality Liezel van der Westhuizen successfully piloted blind fellow cyclist Cindy Jacobs on a tandem bicycle over the famous Himalayas from Mandali to Khardung La in India last month, but the pair also had to battle the elements of wind, rain, sleet and sub-zero temperatures whilst being severely challenged by every imaginable technical problem. They covered the mean distance of 550km in 10 days at altitudes of up to 18 330 feet. Liezel describes it as that ‘once-in-alifetime’ event that cyclists around the world dream of. The expedition starts at Manali, which is known as the door to the heaven of the Himalayas, the route takes you cross five passes with a maximum altitude of 5602 meters reached at Khardung La (It’s one of the world’s highest roads in the world.)

Both being extremely passionate about philanthropy, the two had decided to use the event to raise funds for two medical charities namely Operation Smile South Africa and OneSight. The former is dedicated to providing free surgery to children and adults born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate, while the latter provides refractive error services and prescription spectacles to people without access to affordable vision care. “Cycling this distance on some of the highest roads in the world, is a daunting challenge, especially because the roads are non-existent at some places, and you have to be physically and mentally prepared to complete it,” said Van der Westhuizen. What further sets the event aside, is the fact that it allows for participation of visually impaired and other physically challenged athletes. The event was organized by Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundations with the aim to promote inclusion by enabling Persons with Disability and able bodied people to participate in Adventure Sports together. They stayed in tents along the way with limited access to water for showers and wore a proudly South African sports wool brand Core Merino that protected them against all the elements.

Some of the technical problems the women had to endure included Liezel’s ‘camelback’ (water backpack she carries for nutrition) breaking, her left-hand cycling glove being blown away and everything getting wet – all on day one. On the second day Cindy contracted a bad eye infection, followed by the tandem’s left crank breaking on day 3 which meant they had to walk a far distance before they had access to technical assistance. A crank from a spare bicycle was fitted to their tandem to aid them with their finish. On subsequent days Liezel battled a stomach bug, their bicycle brakes stopped working due to the altitude, and on the final day of cycling the screw on Liezel’s seat post that held Cindy’s handlebar to the tandem, broke off. They had to walk the final two kilometres to the top of Khardung La on the highest motorable road in the world.
