CAPE DUO ENJOYS A SECOND YEAR OF SUCCESS A multi-discipline, multi-stage cycling event, the Breedenet Cape Duo took place in the Western Cape over three days during October, with participants stating they are eager to return in 2019 to take up the challenge yet again.

INTO

This innovative concept, which took stage race cycling to a new level by combining road racing and mountain biking disciplines – saw Team Aluserve/Breedenet of David Garrett and AJ Davids take the overall lead to triumph in the men’s elite category on the final day at Rhebokskloof Wine Estate near Paarl. In the ladies elite event, Team Breedenet of Lehane Oosthuizen and Courteney Webb took the win after four stages, while the men’s master’s category honours went to Team Wolfpack 2’s Graham Coker and Alex Blake.

N E W S PA P E R

Cape Duo Founder, Peter Diesel-Reynolds said, “We at the Cape Duo are under no misconception of where we fit into the cycling calendar both time-wise and brand-wise. October is always a big cycling month on the annual calendar – for many obvious reasons. Yet, we are busy carving out a place in between some great events mostly because of the absolute uniqueness of the Duo and the fact that we have been able to present Cape Duo two years in a row without hassle and with a high standard of presentation.”

The 2018 three-day challenge saw cyclists riding in sweltering summer temperatures while enjoying the Boland nature in full bloom. “It’s so reassuring to have a 50% growth in the event this year moving up to to 78 starters and we look forward to breaking the hundred mark in 2019!” Diesel-Reynolds said. The final day also saw the introduction of the Cape Duo 1-day experience, which allowed participants to cycle the 45km road stage and the 32km mountain bike stage as a standalone event. Douglas Burger took top honours in an overall time of 03:06:15. 2018 Men’s elite champ, AJ Davids, commented, “Another successful event. This year was amazing and everything was perfect.”

“The Cape Duo is a great event mixing mountain and road bike which was a first for me. Extremely challenging, well organised and well supported. A unique event to test your skill across both disciplines. Being a team or solo event, it caters for all,” said John O’ Connor who cycled with teammate Andrew Payne as Team JOC Cycles. Peter Diesel-Reynolds shared a message, “To all who participated and those that took part in some way, what an amazing event.” “Events are one of those things that are only made up of the individual pieces and depending on the ‘gees’ [spirit] and contribution of all involved it will always be directly proportional to the outcome. I guess that’s just a fancy way of saying it was an awesome success because you were all amazing participants.”

Ground Level Projects, the sole beneficiary of the Breedenet Cape Duo received some much needed awareness and is looking forward to some increased support for the school readiness programme they are currently running for the little ones of the infamous Blikkiesdorp in Delft.

BEUKES & BUYS STORMED TO VICTORY AT CAPE PIONEER TREK! Beukes, who grew up in Oudtshoorn, is a familiar favourite at the iconic event. With high-priority races like the ABSA Cape Epic coming up, he explained, “I know these trails really well. We get to encounter some tough terrain out there that put our bikes and bodies to the test. This race is really good preparation for the major events on our international racing calendar.” The highly competitive Team Spur Specialized made it a heart-fought win for Buys and Beukes. After his 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek presented by Biogen victory, Alan Hatherly teamed up with Denmark’s Simon Andreassen with a strong drive to defend the coveted title. After a week of fighting tooth and nail, Hatherly, Andreassen, Beukes and Buys set off for the final 64km stage through Chandelier Game Reserve.

The ‘Race with Soul’ Champions were crowned in front of the Queen’s Hotel in Oudtshoorn on 20 October 2018. After six spectacular stages and 530 km’s in the saddle, Team Pyga Euro Steel’s Matthys Beukes and Philip Buys stormed to victory at the 10th edition of the Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek presented by Biogen. It was a first-time win as a team for South Africa’s mountain biking giants. Buys enthused, “It feels so good to be back to racing form! I haven’t done a serious stage race in ages, and was quickly reminded of how sore the legs get from competing at this level! I’ve never won this event before - it’s all been incredible.”

With the brutal Klein Karoo terrain to conquer, a puncture or mechanical could have ended the race for either team. Caution was to the wind however, as they threw down the gauntlet and engaged in a head-to-head battle with the hope of forcing a mistake from their competitors. It was Hatherly who actually crossed the finish line first, but with Beukes and Buys only seconds behind him, Pyga Euro Steel secured the victory overall. Taking the final spot on the podium was NAD MTB’s Matt Beers and Gawie Combrinck. The women’s field saw an international victory from the German-Dutch pair of Cemile Trommer and Karen Brouwer. With the pink jerseys on their back and overall lead, yet another stage win proved that Trommer and Brouwer have forged a newly-formed formidable duo. In second place was Team Garmin’s Yolandi du Toit and Catherine Williamson. Rounding out the ladies podium was Simone van Aardt and Sarita Louw from Team Faith. Champagne flowed at the finish line as close to 500 riders celebrated the culmination of a week’s hard riding and many happy miles soaking up the uniquely South African scenes and spirit of the Cape Pioneer.

NEW DATE & VENUE FOR MEDIHELP STELLENBOSCH CYCLE TOUR (CONTINUE FROM PAGE 1)

The Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour will take place on Sunday, 20 January 2019 and, while the start (and finish) venue has changed, the 102-kilometre route remains largely unchanged and will still feature some 1285-metres of total ascent. The proverbial sting, however, now lies in the tail… Cyclists leave the picturesque Val De Vie Estate via the R301 before turning onto Lustigan Road – as in the past – and on to Denneboom Road. There are a few rolling bumps to get the legs firing before the first real drag up Bo Dal Road. The first water point is bound to be a welcome sight just before Wellington, from where cyclists will turn left onto Champagne Street. This will take them West past the Windmill Winery toward the second water point at 40km. From here they will head South toward Stellenbosch on the characteristically rolling hills of the R44. It is only once the R44 is dealt with, that Helshoogte Pass, the biggest challenge of the day, beckons. From there it is a fast 30kms to the finish via the long descent into Pniel. A right turn at Boschendal will see cyclists head back on the R301 (Wemmershoek Road) and turn left into the finish at Val De Vie Estate. The route takes in the finest winelands and mountain scenery of the Boland – and offers every opportunity for a fast time and the opportunity to improve your seeding for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. “The Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour is an ideal event to increase awareness for Medihelp Medical Scheme and the service and products offered”, said Heyn van Rooyen, Principal Officer of Medihelp. “The Western Cape is one of the key growth areas for Medihelp and it is important to associate the Scheme with established events such as the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour. We look forward to seeing all the cyclists at Val de Vie Estate in January”, Van Rooyen said. However, some might ask why it is still called the ‘Stellenbosch’ Cycle Tour if it is now hosted outside of town.

Photo: Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour - Photo Credit: Sam Clark

Neethling has the answer. “The new bridge over the Berg River we recently completed links directly to the R45 Simondium Road and means we are 15 minutes away from Stellenbosch,” he said. The Yard at Val de Vie Estate will play host to the event. This state-of-the-art lifestyle centre will feature an Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool, Reuben’s & Co. Café by Reuben Riffel, 1000m² gym with CrossFit facilities as well as an ASG indoor cycling training centre and small bike shop. Entries for the 2019 race opened on Tuesday, 9 October. FAST RACING DISPLAYED AT 2018 WESTERN CAPE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Bellville Velodrome was the venue for the annual Western Cape Track Championships which was held from 6 - 7 October 2018 and proudly sponsored by Sanlam. Hot and warm conditions set the perfect “playground” for great and fast racing which was displayed throughout the championships. Riders from as young as 10 years old up till over 70 years registered for the event which in total saw close to 80 riders trying to raise the bar high as possible and it was obvious that racing was going too be fast. Day 1 saw riders competing in individual events for most of the day, and the highlight of the day was when the Masters Men, Mark Liter-Petersen, Chrispin Fourie and Morne Van Greunen took to the start-line for their Team Sprint, an event where 3 riders race around the track 3 times with one rider coming off after completing a lap. From the offset it was clear that these guys were on a mission and by the second lap they were on record pace and they stopped the clock in a new SA record time of 51,89s. A great performance by these young men. Day 2 had its highlights as well, especially in the Boys U17 category where the competition was fierce and dominated by Jonathan Bouwer who won all his events and was rewarded with the Best U17 rider of the champs.

Photo: Western Cape Track Championships - Photo Credit: Owen Lloyd

In the Junior men category Linwell Jansen and Matthew Fortuin went head to head in all their races and it was difficult to select the best junior of the champs, as both of them showed phenomenal courage and determination in all of their races. Both riders received the best junior award for their performances. In the other categories racing was also fast and furious and no one had it easy. With a couple of not too serious spills and crashes in between, riders gave it their all as they rode the wall in an effort to secure a spot on the podium. It was beautiful and also satisfactory to see the joy and fulfilment on their faces as they received their medals in their respective races. The last event of the champs saw the Elite men sprinters on the start line for their keirin event where riders start off by riding behind a scooter for 3 laps, once the scooter comes off the track the riders have 3 laps to hussle and give their all for that top spot on the podium, an event which is very thrilling to watch and always delivers some surprises. Jean Smit, the top favourite for the event had his work cut out as he was pushed all the way by Wade Theunissen who just managed to beat him to the line in a respectable time of 11,25s followed closely by Greame Ockhuis. An extraordinary win by Wade. With the South African National Track Championships taking place from 11-16 December 2018 at the Bellville Velodrome it will be great to see all these talented riders racing against other provinces which always brings out more great, exciting, thrilling and fast pace track cycling action.

TOP SOUTH AFRICAN MOUNTAIN BIKER MAX KNOX GUILTY OF A DOPING OFFENSE AND BANNED FOR FOUR YEARS TOP South African mountain biker Max Knox has been found guilty of a doping offense and banned for four years, the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) announced. He was charged for suspicious variations in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) that indicated doping. He could not satisfactorily explain to a panel of international experts appointed by SAIDS the reasons for the variation. Knox is a former South African Marathon MTB champion (2012 and 2016), a three-time overall winner of the National MTB Series (2012, 2015 and 2016) and represented South Africa several times at the world cross country and marathon championships. In terms of the ruling, he will be stripped of all his titles from June 16, 2015 and will have to return all prize money, prizes and medals gained since that date. Knox’s ABP was monitored from February 2013 to June 2017. Irregularities included an artificially increased haemoglobin concentration over a period of time and bone marrow stimulation followed by immediate bone marrow suppression. The ABP was reviewed in conjunction with the cyclist’s competition schedules, race results and intelligence supplied to SAIDS. Knox’s explanations and supporting documents were rejected by the international panel as not providing explanations for the ABP changes and irregularities. Mr. Knox lodged an appeal against the initial decision, but failed to file any documentation for his appeal within the prescribed filing period. Knox is one of three mountain bikers given doping bans in the past 18 months as a result of a year-long investigation and tip-offs from whistleblowers. SAIDS’s CEO, Khalid Galant, said that the convictions arose from the first phase of an investigation being undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Priority Crimes and Investigations (the Hawks). The investigation will “continue to look at athletes, medical doctors, coaches and trainers and whether they have a role in a doping supply network”. Earlier this year SAIDS announced that one of the three mountain bikers found guilty of doping offences in the investigation was Shan Wilson, who was banned for six years after being found guilty of doping on five counts. These included: the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolites or markers in a sample; trafficking or attempted trafficking in any prohibited substance or prohibited method; and complicity (being involved with others in acts that are breaches of the regulations). Wilson was initially tested in-competition on March 25, 2014. A female mountain biker was banned for two years after an adverse analytical finding for EPO (Erythropoietin) when she was tested on the 3rd of March this year.

“The investigation was triggered in significant part by whistleblowers and we are very grateful to their efforts to keep sport clean,” said Galant.“We do take tip-offs about any sporting discipline or individuals seriously and encourage people with good information to come forward. Any information remain strictly confidential and can be submitted via our website on an anonymous basis.”“We do take tip-offs about any sporting discipline or individuals seriously and encourage people with information on doping to come forward to us.” - Article by South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport For more information contact Khalid Galant on 0824660629 or khalid@saids.org.za

YZERFONTEIN CYCLE

2019 DE HOOP VLEI MTB EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE The Blue Ribbon Yzerfontein Cycle Experience returns to Yzerfontein on Saturday, 3 November 2018. As with the previous two years, the cycle event will be complemented by an array of local stalls and entertainers, bringing a festival-like atmosphere to the town of Yzerfontein. Feedback from the race last year was incredibly positive, with the competitors enjoying the flat, fast, non-technical route. The veteran cyclists enjoyed the fast 78km training ride, and the less experienced, and more relaxed bunch took advantage of the 52km route, both routes being unique in that they are not open to the public, and run through the beautiful West Coast National Park. Starting from the main beach parking area in Yzerfontein, the competitors will wind their way out of the town, onto the R315, and will turn off onto the Blombosch road which will take them into the West Coast National Park. The Park Manager, Pierre Nel, has generously approved a route which takes the cyclists on private jeep tracks through the splendid nature which the West Coast has to offer. On the return route there is a mixture of tar and jeep track which leads back to the finish line at the main beach, where competitors will receive a medal, a Coca Cola, and an exceptional Premier Goodie Bag.

The 2019 De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience is set to take place from the 27th to the 29th of September. Mountain bikers are encouraged to bring their families along for the adventure. The De Hoop Collection offers not only amazing food, luxury accommodation upgrades and activities throughout the weekend; but also provides the close encounter wildlife viewing for which the nature reserve has become famous. On the bike riders can gear up for days of 68, 62 and 50 kilometres in length with the terrain offering minimal meters of climbing – but the climbing there is, is not to be underestimated. The 2019 event will also see the launch of an exciting new one day race: The De Hoop XCM. Entrants to the De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience will have the option to ride the ultra-marathon one day event, on Saturday the 28th of September, or the 62 kilometre long standard Stage 2. With the stage event focusing on rider experience and encouraging participants to slow down, take photos and enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of the area – the introduction of the one day race allows the competitive at heart to race for a day. DU TOITSKLOOF WINES

Du Toitskloof Wines Launches New MTB Trail

On Friday the 21st of September 40 riders took on what will soon become known as one of the best new mountain bike trails in the Western Cape. After nearly 5 years in the making, the Du Toitskloof MTB Trail has already seen more than a thousand Cape Epic Riders in March, over 200 TransBreede Ultra Riders in January and for the 4th consecutive year teams of riders taking part in the Breedekloof Gravel & Grape.

“This is a dream-come-true,” says Johan, “...and we’re so grateful for all the farm owners who bought into this vision by opening up their land for us to develop, ride and enjoy.”

The official trail launch took experienced and intermediate riders through their 22km mountain bike trail that consist out of a series of single-tracks, technical climbs, little jumps, doubles and a very unique river crossing - a 132m long suspended bridge over the Tierstel river.

The Du Toitskloof MTB Trail consist of two routes, the shorter 14.5km Green Trail and the longer 22km Red Trail. Both routes are clearly marked to ensure that directions, escape routes and even potable water aren’t missed.

“Absolutely beautiful trail - we’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’d say the trail is intermediate to advanced, but definitely caters for beginners as well,” Joanna Dobinson from Biking in the Bosch. The riders came together for coffee at the newly opened Ou Meul Bakery at Du Toitskloof Wines after which a brief background and outline of the trail was given by Du Toitskloof Board Member, Johan De Wet and trail builder, Conrad Stoltz.

At the halfway mark riders stopped to enjoy a glass of cold Du Toitskloof bubbly before returning back to the winery for a shower, lunch and drinks.

In addition to the trail, Du Toitskloof also created shower and bike-wash facilities. The cost for a day pass is R30 and can be paid by scanning the SnapScan barcode on the Trail Info Board at the start of the route. For more information about the Breedekloof MTB Trails can be found at Breedekloof Tourism 023 349 1791

Cape Epic Prep: 2nd Transbreede Ultra in January 2019 MTB Trail The MTB enthusiasts at Du Toitskloof Wines along with Iqela Events kicked off 2018 with their first Transbreede Ultra as preparation for the Cape Epic in March 2018. Next year during the last weekend of January they plan on hosting this premium event again. The TransBreede Ultra is a one-day MTB event comprising of 120km (or 60km for Half Ultra) on trails in Rawsonville, Slanghoek Valley and Bainskloof. Du Toitskloof Wines is the official host as the start and finish venue, so no transfers are needed, enough parking can be expected with shower facilities and a restaurant to be enjoyed after the race. It is a tough course with high temperatures during summer, great single tracks, vineyard roads and mountainous areas with ascents of approximately 2100m. The inaugural event had 213 riders on the start line with 177 finishers. Alban Lakata took overall first place in the 120km with overall female winner, Jennie Stenerhag. “It was tough in a different way. There were many sandy areas and a lot of rocks. Harsh climbs and many single tracks.” “I’m glad I’ve seen the route ahead of the Epic and obviously happy with the result,” Jennie Stenerhag about the Transbreede Ultra. If you’re training for the Cape Epic in 2019 or just an avid MTB rider, lock down that last weekend in January and join Du Toitskloof Wines for this premium event in the new year. More information about the Transbreede Ultra can be found at www.iqela-events.co.za

HERITAGE & HISTORY OF THE CORONATION DOUBLE CENTURY The Coronation Double Century (more affectionately known in the cycling world as the CDC) began life as a non-competitive day in the saddle among long-time cycling chums. A Stellenbosch wine farmer, and fanatical cyclist Charles Milner, is traditionally considered the founding father of what has grown into one of the country’s most prestigious, challenging and scenic bike races. In the early 1990s, the cycling fraternity in Milner’s southern Cape farming circle believed there was a market for a double century on the cycling calendar because, at the time, the longest race was the 160-odd-km One Tonner. For a challenging day out, Milner and his mates would ride from his Klapmuts wine farm, Natte Valleij, via Franschhoek, Villiersdorp, Rawesonville, Bainskloof, Wellington and then back to Nattevallej – a distance of 200km. This was tough, but an ideal route for a proposed double century race, they imagined. The cycling farmers approached the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and convinced then-chairman, Lawrence Whittaker, vice-chairman, Frans Fouche, event coordinator, Jasmine Griffin, and executive committee member, David Bellairs, that a double century would be a welcome addition to the world of South African cycling. The circular route from Natte Valleij seemed a natural choice to suggest; after all, they’d all cycled that route themselves and it had proved itself to be just what a double century should be: an endurance challenge matched by the beauty of the landscapes it traverses. The inaugural DC took place in 1993, with 385 starters. Milner remembered it fondly: “It was blisteringly hot on the day of our first race and even though I could almost see the tar melt while we rode, there was a tremendous team spirit amongst the cyclists. This same spirit is what makes the Coronation Double Century what it is today – a race of camaraderie and team participation.” Over the years, the route has changed many times largely due to race numbers impacting on the ability to use particular routes. After the first few years – the race grew exponentially in popularity so race numbers jumped quickly – traffic authorities closed Bainskloof to riders, which forced organisers to adopt a new route. They then rode from Klapmuts to Aan de Doorns wine cellar outside Worcester and back. By the middle of the 90s, however, the starting point of Natte Valleij Farm was too small for the growing event: a new starting point had to be found. Organisers selected the Drakenstein Correctional Facility (formerly and better-known as the Victor Verster Prison), between Paarl and Franschhoek. By the late 90s the race had moved to Ceres and incorporated a very tough out-and-back circuit to the top of Bo Swaarmoed and Theronsberg Passes.

It wasn’t pretty, though, which resulted in dwindling numbers, so in the early 2000s the race was re-homed to a start and end point of Montagu. Picturesque, historic villages and towns like Ashton, Robertson, Bonnievale, Drew, Swellendam, Suurbraak and Barrydale – via the Tradouw Pass – were then included in the route. The scenic beauty of the new southern Cape route saw a leap in numbers and the starting venue was moved to minimise the amount of time that riders spend on the national road (the N2) near Swellendam. And so the race arrived at its current home: again to a start and end point of Swellendam where today it enjoys huge support from the local community. In the early days, the chief sponsor of the race was Pickfords before, in 2007, Coronation Fund Managers came on board as chief naming rights sponsor. This was the first year the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust took over the organisation of the event from the owners of the event, the Pedal Power Association, an arrangement that is still in place today. The Coronation Double Century takes place on Saturday, 24 November 2018. This unique time trial sees 270 teams of 6 to 12 riders starting in Swellendam and racing via Suurbraak, the Tradouw Pass and Op de Tradouw ascent towards Montagu. The route then passes Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale, returning via the R317 to Swellendam.

DATE AND ROUTE SET FOR WESTERN CAPE CHAMPS IN JANUARY 2019 The dates are set for the Western Cape Road and Time Trial Championships for 5-6 January 2019. Eden Cycling will host the event to take place in De Rust, near Oudtshoorn. The venue for the race will be located at the Tanta Maria Padstal near the Stompdrift dam with all the routes in the direction of Uniondale and back. The road race will take place on the Saturday morning and the individual Time Trial on the Sunday morning. This route has not been used for a road race in recent times and is undulating with 1800m accent for the 147km route which the elites will participated in. Online entries for the event will open in 1 November 2018 on www.cycleevents. co.za. Manual entries for the road race will be available at registration on Friday, 4 January 2018. No late entries for the Time Trial will be accepted. Entries will close on 31 December 2018. For more information visit www.edencycling.co.za

TOUR DE MAURICE 2018

The Tour de Maurice is a highly sought after tour, it used to hold a UCI status and has seen stage wins from the likes of Chris Froome, so when the prospect to race on the tropical island of Mauritius arose, the team management from Team Mad Macs p/b häzz coffee from Stellenbosch jumped at the opportunity.

Alex Heward, team owner, and Nick McFall, owner of Mad Macs Motorcycles, the title sponsor of the team, began planning the trip well in advance, making sure that the riders were well looked after leading up to and during the tour. The team would have loved to bolster a full squad, however to level the playing field, the organisers limited the team size to 5 riders. The 5 riders that represented Team Mad Macs were: Alex Heward, Max Sullivan, Charles McFall, Rocco King and Gregory de Vink, with Nick McFall, Rob Cragg and Kyle Basson accompanying the team as management. Etnard Louw travelled with the team to race with a local squad, alongside fellow Saffa, Alexander Parsons. The team arrived well in advance ahead of the first race day, which allowed everyone to settle in, get used to the climate and do some route reconnaissance. After some lounging on the beach and a couple of coffee rides, the team was ready to explore the Mauritian Island, albeit in race mode. The tour kicked off with a 3.6km

THE CAPE CLASSIC 2018 After the launch of the Cape Classic 380 in 2014, the event has attracted those looking for a multi-stage road event and has become particularly popular with local triathletes and those undergoing a training programme building up to the Coronation Double Century. This year the event is set to take place from 9 - 11 November 2018. This is a challenging, superbly organized fun 3-day cycling event based in Montagu in the Western Cape for amateur enthusiasts looking for a friendly event with an optional competitive angle. The event founder, Andrew Selby, is moving on to new pastures and has passed the event on to Craig Edwards of Cape Cycle Tours under whose “Captainship” the event will continue. The event will retain the founder’s ethos of being a relaxed and informal affair, but the event stalwarts, of which there are a number, bring their own competition and old rivalry into the race sections. However some changes are planned to the previous 3 day format.

prologue around the capital city, Port Louis, at night! The following 5 days consisted of 4 road stages and an individual time trial, spanning across some of the islands most beautiful areas and along some spectacular coastal roads. The racing was really tight, and the team battled it out for the general classification as well as the green points jersey competition. We walked away with third overall on GC, thanks to a flying Gregory de Vink, second and third in the points classification and a couple of stage podiums. More importantly, the team left the tour with some fantastic racing in their legs, great memories and an all-round good experience. Whether you go to the tour for a holiday or it’s your job, you’re bound to have a good time thanks to the white sandy beaches, blazing sunshine and friendly locals, who always go the extra mile to accommodate you. Without the support of the teams various partners and backers, none of the above would have become a reality. Special thanks to Mad Macs motorcycles for getting the team there, and to all those who have helped the team along the way. - Article by Max Sullivan

The 10th annual Spur Schools MTB League came to a roaring close at the Inter-Schools Final in Magaliesburg recently. The Team from the Western Cape came second in the Inter-Schhols Final, while Paul Roos Gimnasium was placed first in the overall men’s winner category.

In the Youth Men (A) category Aidan Penfold from Paul Roos Gimnasium came third, while Andrea Schofmann from Rhenish Girls High School placed third in the Youth Women (A) category. In the Youth Men (B) category Joshua Burger came third and in the Junior Men category, Jamie Penfold from Paul Roos Gimnasium scooped first place. “It was an absolute privileged to experience Schools Mountain biking magic as the best School riders in the country competed against each other . Alan Hatherly and Ariane Luthi from Team Spur & Schools League ambassadors shared some valuable advice and interacted with children through different activities. Really worthwhile for every School to work towards qualifying for Inter-Schools finals! Looking forward to another 10 years of Spur Schools MTB League success.”Annelize Ziehl-Owens, Chairperson Western Cape Schools Cycling. Feedback from some school riders: “ A great experience. Learnt a lot about racing and had an all around good time”- Justin Chesterton, Wynberg Boys High School. “Magaliesburg is definitely something that every spur MTB league rider should work towards. I learned so much and made so many new friends. I can’t wait till next year.”- Andrea Schofmann, Rhenish Girls High. “Thrilling experience and everyone was so friendly.” - Julia Marx-Springfield, Convent High School.

Community Cycling Goes Big in Piketberg The third annual Piketberg community cycle race got underway on 7 October 2018, and was hosted by BergRivier Municipality, in conjunction with Steynville Senior Secondary School and supported by The Sports Trust and Nedbank. The event was co-sanctioned by the Western Province Cycling Association and Cycling SA and required detailed logistics and support from the various local traffic officials, race officials, medical support and the race marshals who were from the Community Works Programme. The 103km race started at the Piketberg cricket grounds, with some of the Elite Development cyclists taking part together with Category 1 cyclists who came from Union Cycling International and other local Cape Town Clubs that drove down to compete in this race. The “Sprint Point Winner” winning the “Green Jersey” was Theuns Van Der Bank, from Demacon Aurecon Club, City Cycle in Cape Town, and overall “King of the Mountain” who won the “Red Spotted Jersey” was the UCI (Union Cycling International) cyclist from Ethiopia, Negasi Abreha. Vuyo Mavuyo, the elite development cyclist placed 4th in this King of the Mountain race, which was a great achievement considering the fast paced nature of this competition and the level of skill and endurance required in order to climb such a formidable pass such as Versveld Pass. Eduardo Engelbrecht who hails from Piketberg’s Steynville High School achieved 1st place, in the U/19 category for the 50km race, and Iman Phillips took 1st Place in the U/19 Junior Category for the girls. The very special metal cyclist trophies were made from recycled materials, and Jan Faro, from Piketberg designed and made these in honour of his son, Eduardo, as he is passionate about cycling. The Executive Mayor, Ray van Rooy, attended the prize giving ceremony and commented that these events are crucial to the community as it gives them an opportunity to participate in sport, and keep the youth off the streets. It also attracts tourism through the cyclists and visitors attending these events as well as supporting the local businesses.

Mike Tippett, manager of The Sports Trust Development cycling club, commented that the event was awesome, as the calibre of cyclists from the international teams, really raised the standard of this event, and the development cyclists rose to the challenge. “It is so inspiring to see the ever-growing numbers of development cyclists from The Sports Trust Development Cycling Programme competing in the distinctive new Nedbank Green shirts,” says Gerry Raftopoulos, Group Marketing Manager of the Nedbank Sport Affinity. The programme supplies bikes and supports the training and participation of over 200 learners per year at the participating schools. It is also involved with five community cycle races each year, hosted by the participating schools. Furthermore it supports an Elite Development Squad of approximately 15 cyclists who have been selected for provincial squads and are aiming at becoming national and professional cyclists.

Laerskool Blanco Crowned Mountain Biking Champions The annual Ladismith Cheese 7Weekspoort MTB Challenge witnessed over a thousand cyclists in the quaint town of Ladismith. For some the event was an opportunity to put their riding skills to the test on the challenging 85km route, while for others it was a chance to soak in the Seweweekspoort surroundings.

For many youngsters in the Southern and Western Cape region, however, the event was a competitive race that would allow them to claim mountain biking prestige for their school. This year Laerskool Blanco were crowned 2018 School’s Race Champions. With the strong incentive to win prize money that would be given to their school and the coveted floating trophy, the cycling stars overcame some stiff competition from Laerskool Robertson to collectively snatch up enough points and seal the overall victory. Standing out in particular was Laerskool Blanco’s Mianette Theron, Lincoln Zietsman and Anje van Niekerk who managed to set the fastest time their respective age categories. George Suid, Laerskool Outeniqua and Knysna Primary took the joint position of third overall. The strong group of Blanco riders was spearheaded by teacher and fellow mountain biker, Johan du Preez, who commented: “The camaraderie at Laerskool Blanco is at an all-time high because we feel like we’ve finally proved we’re the best marathon cycling school in the Western Cape. I love how this event helps us promote this sport.” “Mountain biking offers a unique opportunity to a wide spectrum of school children and gives them a sense of belonging. I’ve seen it boost so many of my learner’s confidence as they’ve discovered a new sense of adventure.”

The essentials of cycling physiology and coaching Science to Sport and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa’s Education Hub invite you to join them for a day of informative talks and interaction with cycling coaches and physiologists on 17 November 2018. The Cycling Masterclass will build on the content presented in the SSISA online Cycling Science course and is free to attend (lunch cost excluded) for those who have already completed the online course – The essentials of cycling physiology and coaching. If you have not completed the online course, you will have to register and pay for the online course before qualifying for the Cycling Masterclass. If you are unable to attend the course in person, the content will be recorded and added as a separate module and added to the course, which you will be able to view for the duration of your subscription. Dr Jeroen Swart will kick the day off with a presentation on laboratory-based performance testing. Jeroen presented this talk at the Science and Cycling Conference in July 2018, where it was very well received. The talk will discuss the validity, reliability and practical relevance of laboratory-based metrics.

In addition, data from a multiple Tour De France winner will be presented and discussed. The second presentation will be delivered by John Wakefield, who has been arguably South Africa’s most successful cycling coach over the last two years. John will present training load data from athletes who have won Cross-county (XCO) World Championships and compete in the UCI World Tour. Ben Capostagno will follow with the third presentation of the day, which will discuss how environmental conditions can be used to improve adaptations to endurance training. Altitude, heat and ‘training low’ can all be used to increase the response to training sessions. The final presentation of the day will be delivered by Dr Mike Posthumus. Mike will present, with the use of examples, how training load can be monitored in a practical setting. Appropriate load monitoring can not only improve performance, but also create a template upon which future training loads can be based. For more information visit www.ssisa.com

Van Loveren Java MTB Challenge The Java MTB not only catered for superfast athletes, but also for the youngsters. Kiddies from the age of 3 tackled the 6km easy, non-technical MTB route with their parents – which made it a family fun weekend in Robertson. The 20km route was ideal for beginners and consists mostly of jeep tracks with some single tracks, which was not very technical. The 45km route was more suitable for intermediate riders, while the adrenalin seekers took part in the 80km gruelling route, including many sections of the 2018 ABSA Cape Epic route as well as virgin territory and custom-built single tracks. On the day the MTB trails at Van Loveren Family Vineyards offered riders amazing views of the Breede River and the Robertson valley. Apart from thrilling MTB and trail running across scenic farmland and mountains, the Java MTB Challenge also offered enticing food stalls, live music, wine tasting, lucky draws, prizes and a great vibe!

Hundreds of mountain bikers, trail runners and their families made their way to the Van Loveren Family Vineyards in the picturesque Robertson Valley on 13 October 2018 for the Java MTB Challenge - named after Van Loveren’s much loved African Java Pinotage wine. Starting and ending at Van Loveren, the trails varied in technicality and offered riders of all fitness levels a good workout.

Liezel van der Westhuizen, Brand Ambassador for Rola Ford, one of the Java MTB Challenge sponsors participated in the event. “I love this race. Definitely one of my favourites. One of the highlights on my mountain biking calendar.” The Java MTB Challenge is a fundraising platform for local schools and charitable organisations and has raised over R500, 000.00 in cash for its local community to date. The Java MTB Challenge 2018 will be remembered as a fun-filled sporting day for the entire family – make a note in your calendar for 2019!

Dorsland MTB Challenge The quaint little village of Van Wyksdorp, situated on a gravel road on route R327 – 42km from Ladismith in the Klein Karoo, came alive with plenty of activity around the inaugural Dorsland MTB Challenge that took place on 13 October. Van Wyksdorp and its community welcomed riders to their charming village to unwind and enjoy a day of cycling, away from their busy lifestyles - untouched by the modern hustle and bustle of the city - where tranquillity abounds and time has almost stood still. Riders as far as Mpumalanga and Cape Town came to explore the scenic mountain bike route the area has to offer with registration, start and finish-line in Main Street at the Van Wyksdorp “Mall” which includes two general dealers, two liquor stores, and the Spekboom Restaurant. Most of the amazing routes were limited for riding only during the Dorsland MTB Challenge. The 3 distances on offered catered for riders with different fitness levels, and included a 15km (easy Jeeptrack and Gravel Road), a 30km (40% Gravel Road and 60% Jeeptrack), and a 65km (50% Gravel road and 50% Jeeptrack). The Spekboom Restaurant played host to the presentation with the category winners receiving a special trophy and all participants receiving a “Dorsland MTB Mug” as memorabilia of the great day at the Dorsland MTB Challenge. Riders will reminisce on their experience at the Dorsland MTB Challenge in Van Wyksdorp for a long time, breathing the atmosphere of a living village and longing for another stress free weekend in the Klein Karoo – riding their bike.

Timbercity Cycle Tour Nicol Carstens from Cape Town, rider for Team Alfa Bodyworks/Giant took victory in the Timbercity Cycle Tour road race hosted by Eden Cycling Association on 30 September 2018 in Oudtshoorn, after winning the Ladismith Cheese 7Weekspoort MTB Challenge. The Timbercity Cycle Tour started in perfect weather conditions in front of Brian’s Grill and Family Restaurant on Sunday morning. The elite riders had to conquer the 104km challenging route that stretches into Matjiesrivier at the foot of the Swartberg Mountain range to the Cango Caves, and back to Outdshoorn. The winner of the 2017 event, Louis Visser, rider for Team Dimension Data Continental arrived back in Cape Town from Europe and was eager to defend his title. Team Alfabodyworks/Giant had a strategic plan in place from the start and decided to position 2 riders in the break. Three of their riders found themselves in the early break with Louis Visser and David Garret and they had to keep a watchful eye on Louis, as he knows this area and climbs very well. They knew they had to get rid of Louis to stand a chance to win the race. Rainhardt Marais overtook Louis on a descent taking Rohan de Plooy with him and managed to get a gap of about 2 minutes over their competitors.

With the 16th edition, it was clear to see that the event has become an integral part of the Ladismith community. Besides providing an economic opportunity for the town, the event has also played a major role in promoting sport in the area. Dryland Event Management sponsored 150 entries to school children this year with the support of Rhodes Food Group who gave them all a cycling kit. For many riders, the Ladismith Cheese 7Weekspoort MTB Challenge came as an opportunity to put their cycling skills to the test. There were various routes for different fitness levels on offer, with the 85km route presenting the greatest challenge. Adding an element of excitement was the addition of new trails, which proved to be well-received by familiar participants. Yolande de Villiers took the victory in the women’s category, while Nicol Carsten’s won the men’s category. As no stranger to the event, de Villiers has stormed to title multiple times in her career and finished it seven times. As the day drew to a close, a proud Dryland Event Management director Henco Rademeyer gave a parting shot: “This is one of those ‘feel good’ events and the benefits go way beyond just a commercial one. There are so many people outside of Dryland that are positively impacted by this, and that’s what keeps us coming back.”

PAGE 14

Nicol Carstens and Louis rode together up until the Cango Caves where Nicol dropped Louis. He bridged the gap to his teammates and they rode together as team to the finish-line. Nicol took the win, with Rohan in second and Rainhardt in third over the finish-line. Defending champion Anriette Schoeman, riding for Team Africa Silks-Bestmed took the women’s elite category with Mellusca Toovey in second.

WIN WITH SPECIALIZED AT THE 2018 ORIGIN OF TRAILS MTB EXPERIENCE One lucky Origin Of Trails MTB Experience rider will take home an awesome Specialized Stumpjumper FSR ST to the value of R30 000 the weekend of Saturday, 24 and Sunday, 25 November 2018 compliments of the event’s bicycle partner. “The Origin of Trails MTB Experience is a great way of showcasing what Stellenbosch has to offer in terms of the trails and the beautiful landscapes,” says Kate Whitehead, Marketing Coordinator at Specialized Bicycles Africa. “As it is a 2-day event, riders and spectators are encouraged to stick around and take in all that Stellenbosch has to offer. The fact that the event encourages riders to enjoy the experience as opposed to racing, definitely levels the playing field and lifts the pressure, so the high stress levels can be replaced with high ‘stoke’ levels instead.” “This year we are especially excited to see how the inclusion of the Specialized Turbo E-bike category will be received by riders,” continues Whitehead. Photo: Origin Of Trails MTB Experience 2017 - Photo Credit: Tobias Ginsberg “With the rise of the category globally it was only a matter of time before races incorporated it locally. We look forward to seeing this category grow in the future. We are also excited to be running a competition where one rider will take home a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR ST to the value of R30 000. The competition will take place on Day 1. We will post a riddle to social media. If correctly solved, riders will know where to take a photograph on route during Day 1. These photographs need to be shared to Instagram. Don’t forget to tag @specializedza. The winner will be announced during prize giving after Day Two.” “Specialized values our junior mountain bikers and for that reason we will also have a fun Specialized Kids Zone in the Festival Village over both days,” confirms Whitehead. “There will be a mini track with bikes, helmets and obstacles. The junior mountain bikers are in for a treat.” An individual 2-day MTB Experience, the Origin Of Trails routes highlight the beauty and splendor of the City Of Oaks. Mountain bikers can look forward to the “once a year opportunity” to experience a vast network of world class trails and can choose between a: Fun Ride (1-day), Long Route (2-days) and Short Route (2-days). EXCITING NEWS: The 2018 Origin Of Trails MTB Experience, in association with Specialized Bicycles Africa, will boast a Turbo E-bike category. Please Note: This category will start in its own batch and will not feature prize money. CHARITY SUPPORT: The Origin Of Trails proudly supports Aitsa and the Stellenbosch Trail Building Fund. The Fund is committed to continuously developing the trails in Stellenbosch, further sealing the town’s reputation as a global mountain biking destination.
