KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!

Photo: 2018 Discovery Triathlon World Cup, Greenpoint Stadium, Cape Town - Photo Credit: Discovery Triathlon World Cup

Cape Town is South Africa’s most active city according to research Discovery released last year called Road to a Healthier South Africa 2018 in which six major cities across the country were measured for how active they are by steps tracked, gym workouts and outdoor activities completed. “For that reason, we are excited to be hosting the Discovery Get Active Weekend in Cape Town. Discovery also aims to make communities healthier and get everyone more active because heart disease, strokes, cancer, diabetes and chronic

On 10 March 2019 some 35 000 cyclists will line up for the biggest road cycling event on the South African calendar at the Grand Parade Precinct before setting off on the iconic route that includes highlights and challenges like Wynberg Hill, Smitswinkel, Misty Cliffs, Chapman’s Peak and Suikerbossie. Passing by two oceans, fynbos-sloped mountains and a modern cityscape, the 109km course is arguably the most beautiful of any mass-participation race route in the world. There is an energy on the route you won’t feel at many other events. For the pros, it’s a case of see and be seen, while newbies are carried on near-tangible waves of support by the thousands of enthusiastic spectators who line the route. The weekend warriors and serious amateurs churn up the kilometres, marshalling their bunches in an effort to chase the proverbial carrot of a personal best time. Or the hallowed sub-three.

The closer one gets to that, the smaller the increments in which improvements are measured. But those front bunches are the minority and for most, the day is much more about the camaraderie and the fun.

The three hundred exhibitors will welcome more than 70 000 visitors over the three days. Visitors can view all the latest bike stuff, buy those last-minute spares, be tempted into exotic holidays, check your blood pressure – the opportunities are endless.

The beauty of the event lies not only in the backdrop, but also the fact that it brings together all manner of cyclists from around the world. At elite level, it is the race every South African pro wants to win. Further down the ranks, it’s the benchmark event by which every serious amateur cyclist in the country measures themselves. A Cycle Tour PB is a much-cherished accomplishment and those in the realm of the three-hour mark wear the badge with pride.

The 29th annual Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo will be held from 7-9 March 2019 at the Cape Town Stadium for the third time, and is once again chock-a-block with exhibitors from within the cycling industry, and beyond. This is also the venue for the registration process each entrant must follow to collect their race number for the main event on 10 March 2019, before taking in South Africa’s biggest cycling exhibition.

lung disease are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide,” says Iona Maclean, Head of Sponsorships and Experiential Marketing at Discovery. “Getting regular exercise, stopping smoking and eating healthier makes a significant difference in bringing these stats down and managing these diseases. Road to a Healthier South Africa 2018 also shows that 50% of South Africans lead sedentary lifestyles, more than double that of the global average of 23%.

SPECIALIZED FOUNDATION LINKS WITH SPUR SCHOOLS LEAGUE FOR ABSA CAPE EPIC

Alan Hatherly goes from Spur Schools League success story to racing the Absa Cape Epic alongside Sam Gaze for The Specialized Foundation – Spur Schools’ League. Having spent four years in the Spur Schools League as a high school student the South African and 2018 Under 23 XCO World Champion is undoubtedly the series’ greatest success story to date. At the 2019 Absa Cape Epic Hatherly will take the next step in his career, racing alongside former U23 XCO World Champion, Sam Gaze. The pair are however not just racing for themselves, they are riding for good causes – in the form of The Specialized Foundation and the Spur Schools League. The Specialized Foundation was founded by Specialized’s Founder and CEO Mike Sinyard in 2014. The foundation uses cycling as a tool for children to achieve academic, health and social success.

Together with the Stanford Medical School and the cutting-edge work of RTSG Neuroscience Consultants, The Specialized Foundation are looking into the treatment options for ADHD and using cycling as a tool to mitigate its effects. Over the past few years, they have brought this concept to life by working with schools across the United States to create cycling programs through their Riding for Focus initiative.

In South Africa the Spur Schools League is a phenomenal success story. In 2018 over 5 000 individual students, from 500 primary and high schools across the country, took part in Schools League events. In total 20 000 race entries were received during the 60 event provincial series, which culminated with the Inter-School Final at Bekker High School in Magaliesburg. Hatherly was in attendance at the 2018 final; showing off his freshly acquired world champion’s rainbow stripes.

Though Hatherly no longer rides for Team Spur his association with the Spur Schools League continues. As an ambassador for the league Hatherly will continue to inspire the next generation South African of mountain biking talent. While Spur Steak Ranches have extended their support of the league, which they helped found in 2008, to at least 2027. Hatherly and Gaze’s Absa Cape Epic quest carries triple goals. The foremost of those is for the two young riders to gain valuable experience which will stand them good stead when they return for a tilt at the title in years to come. They do not line up entirely without pressure to perform however, Hatherly and Gaze will also be supporting the defending Absa Cape Epic champions Jaroslav Kulhavý and Howard Grotts in their bid to retain the yellow jerseys.

The final and perhaps most important goal to mountain bikers and fans of the sport is their association with The Specialized Foundation and the Spur Schools League. The invaluable work done by both programmes to facilitate and encourage children to take up cycling is impossible without the publicity which star athletes like Hatherly and Gaze generate. The Specialized Foundation will be raising funds for their Riding for Focus programmes throughout the 2019 Absa Cape Epic. While the presence of Hatherly, a league graduate, in the event will no doubt continue to inspire Spur Schools League competitors to pursue their cycling dreams. The Specialized Foundation team is exceptionally proud to have Hatherly and Gaze racing for their cause. “I founded The Specialized Foundation on the profound belief that cycling changes lives,” said Mike Sinyard, Founder and CEO of Specialized. “Imagine a day in the near future when doctors prescribe a bike ride as treatment for ADHD. This is bigger than Specialized. This is about how the cycling industry can come together to change the world for the better — and we’re inviting everyone to join us in making that happen.” For more information visit www.specializedfoundation.org

DARYL IMPEY WINS BACK-TO-BACK TOUR DOWN UNDER TITLES Daryl Impey has written himself into the history books for all the right reasons in a thrilling final climb to the summit of the iconic Willunga Hill on the final stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. Impey became the first male to win back-to-back Tour Down Under titles with a third-place finish on the final stage. Impey may relish this year’s victory more than that of 2018, for this was undoubtedly the toughest Santos Tour Down Under in recent memory with the six road stages testing the riders in tough conditions all week. More than that, Impey’s 2019 Santos general classification victory came with something his 2018 Ochre Jersey didn’t – a stage win, taken in a determined sprint to the finish line for 100% Stage 4 at Campbelltown. It also cements Mitchelton-SCOTT’s position as the most successful team in Santos Tour Down Under history. The South African champion said it was special to go back to back. “I never dreamed to come here and win twice in a row,” he said. “Every year we come here with strong ambitions. I knew the competition is always tough. I just believed in myself, and it was just fantastic to pull it off.” “Last year I was a lot more ecstatic because I felt like I made a big step. I feel like I am maturing more as a rider, and that’s so exciting.” “I want to dedicate the win to him (Mathew Hayman). He’s been a fantastic team mate, a lot of my victories have come with Maty. To let him go out this way, we were going to celebrate his career anyway tonight, but to win the race overall it’ll be a double celebration.”

PAIN RELIEVER TRAMADOL ADDS TO LIST OF BANNED SUBSTANCES In light of the risks associated with its use in competitive cycling, and in accordance with the UCI Management Committee decision of June 2018, the UCI Medical Regulations will ban in-competition use of tramadol. What is the purpose of the ban? The ban is based on a desire to reduce the risk of crashes, and that of drug dependency, among riders. Any rider taking part in an event registered on a national or international calendar may be chosen to provide a blood sample as a test for tramadol. Testing will take place in-competition, after races, across all disciplines and categories. This will be managed by the UCI’s Medical Director, with logistical and personnel support from the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF). Dried blood droplets will be tested for the presence of Tramadol, using a high-precision analysis technique. Positive or negative results will depend on the presence or absence of the substance in the blood (there is no threshold). From 1 March 2019, in-competition use of tramadol will be banned across all disciplines. This new regulation, which is being introduced for medical reasons, allows for penalties to be imposed if the rules are broken. Tramadol is a painkiller in the synthetic opioid category. It is frequently used by cyclists, as shown by the findings of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s monitoring programme since 2012. In particular in the 2017 survey: 4.4% of in-competition tests on cyclists showed the use of tramadol; and 68% of urine samples – taken from across 35 Olympic sports – containing tramadol were from cyclists. What are the side effects of Tramadol? The use of tramadol can have two types of side-effect: nausea, drowsiness and loss of concentration (increasing the risk of race crashes), and gradual dependence on the substance with a risk of developing an addiction. Tramadol is available on prescription but is also freely available on the internet, which increases the risk of uncontrolled self-medication.

The analysis will be carried out in a reference laboratory, with the results sent to the UCI Medical Director within a maximum of 4-5 days. Rider penalties: A first offence committed by a rider will be penalised with disqualification from the event, alongside all resulting consequences (loss of medals, points and prize money). In addition, a fine of CHF5,000 will be imposed if the rider is a member of a UCI-registered team. In all other cases, the fine will be CHF1,000. A second offence will result in disqualification from the event and a five-month suspension. If a further offence is committed, a nine-month suspension will be incurred. Team penalties: If two riders belonging to the same UCI registered team commit an offence within a period of 12 months, the team will be fined CHF10,000. If a further offence is committed within the same 12-month period, the team will be suspended for a period of between 1 and 12 months, to be determined by the UCI Disciplinary Commission. The new regulation will come into force on 1 March 2019

LOCAL HEROES SHINE AT ATTAKWAS EXTREME Rounding out the all South African podium was Gert Heyns (DSV Pro Cycling) who managed to snatch up second, and a young Nicol Carstens (Imbuko Giant) who finished in third. It was a ground-breaking win in Carstens’ still very young career, and an unexpected thrashing for many salted elite riders in the field. The women’s race proved to be a truly jaw dropping spectacle to witness. As predicted, some of South Africa’s brightest stars Candice Lill (Summit), Sam Sanders (Dormakaba), and Yolande de Villiers; and Sweden’s Jennie Stenerhag (Fairtree Silverback) broke away early into the route. It seemed that victory was out of reach for De Villiers as she dropped off the pace of the leading group by more than 40 seconds for a large portion of the race. It has to be said that her local knowledge contributed to her carefully calculated effort to regain contact with the leaders at the last waterpoint. The crowd watched in disbelief as the three women sprinted for the line, with De Villiers snatching victory from the claws of defeat by a hair’s breath. Pyga Euro Steel’s Matthys Beukes has been crowned Momentum Health Attakwas Extreme presented by Biogen Champion for the second consecutive time. In the elite women’s category, 46-year old Yolande de Villiers (Team Altes Landhaus powered by Madmacs Kawasaki) stormed to victory to become the oldest winner of the country’s 'toughest one day mountain bike race.'

“We have to congratulate our local riders that did extremely well. First Mattyhs Beukes for taking a well-deserved win and Gert Heyns (still seen as a local) taking the second spot, with local hero, Yolande de Villiers winning the elite women’s category.”

The event doubles as the opening race of the UCI Marathon Mountain Bike calendar, and is renowned for attracting some of the world’s top racing talent. Among the pretenders to Beukes’ thrown this year was ultra-endurance legend Karl Platt from Team Bulls and Pyga Euro Steel teammate Philip Buys. In a tightly fought tactical race, Beukes put the highly competitive field to the test with multiple attacks along the unforgiving 121km route. Early mechanical issues took both Buys and Platt out of contention for the title, leaving Heyns, Carstens, and Arno du Toit pushing to keep up with Beukes’ blistering pace. Many would presume that the toughest part of the race was over when riders reached the top of the infamous Attakwas “King of the Mountain” climb. The true test of grit had only just begun, however, with the undulating terrain over the final 60 km’s to the finish line. It was incredibly exciting to watch as Beukes broke away from the group at this point to establish and extend an overall lead to almost 5 minutes. “This is truly one of the toughest races on the calendar and a great test of physical and mental fitness early in the season. One of my goals was to beat Urs Huber’s record today, but going so hard from the start of the race meant that cramps set in later on. Happy to take the win though,” said an elated Beukes.

“The local riders from Eden did extremely well in the Mini Attakwas which was won by our Junior rider Tristan Nortje. In fourth place and first youth rider was Zandre Gerber followed by Julian Bunge in second and Jonathan van Jaarsveld in third. The women also performed well with Charlissa Schultz taking the first junior women’s position and third overall lady, while Alissa Coetzer and Marlie Blom took the first and second spots in the women’s youth category. Well done to all the riders that competed the event.” - Eden Cycling.

TREK2TEEBUS

THE BROAD KAROO LIKE YOU’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE TYREPLUS-TYGERVALLEY TREK2TEEBUS Search and discover “meaning [in] the broad Karoo, the bush, the dusty loam” during the TyrePlus-Tygervalley Trek2Teebus in April 2019. The three day stage race, dubbed a Karoo Adventure takes place from the 26th to the 28th of April between the “kopje-crest[s] that break the veldt around” Steynsburg. On the bike Trek2Teebus provides a total of 210 kilometres of racing across three 72, 55 and 80 kilometre long stages; and takes in 2100 meters of climbing in the process. The routes traverse the broad grassy planes, ascend the hillocks and trace the cordons of dense greenery which track the watercourses, all of which provide the region with its distinctive scenery. With gravel roads and jeep tracks making up the majority of the distance the riding is largely non-technical, though some rocky sections do provide thrills for those with the skills to take on the challenges at speed. Route highlights include the ascent over the infamous Bulhoek Pass and a descent below the Karoo’s red soils into the Orange-Fish Tunnel. The Bulhoek Pass may be just 4 kilometres in length, but it rises 500 meters in elevation over the short distance. Its summit will mark the King and Queen of the Mountain for the Trek2Teebus.

The race village for Trek2Teebus is located 12 kilometres west of the small Eastern Cape town of Steynsburg. Situated on the Harmonie Farm it provides the ideal location from which to explore the rural Karoo surroundings.

While for South African history aficionados the pass is made even more memorable as it leads riders across the farm on which Oom Paul Kruger was born.

It is an area well-off the usual tourist route and a great deal of the charm is provided by the honest country life – where visitors are greeted with the familiar hospitality of returning friends.

The best and most unique aspect of the event is left for last: a ride into the OrangeFish Tunnel. Each rider will have the chance to descend to the control room for the 82 kilometre long underground aqueduct – which transports 22 cubic metres of water per second from the Gariep Dam to the Great Fish River.

Off the bike Petrichor Adventures’ superb organisation and the world famous Karoo hospitality combine to perfection. Luxury tented accommodation options and the ability to book for a non-riding partner to accompany riders illustrates the race organisers’ commitment to making Trek2Teebus a pleasurable experience all round. As for the food… riders, and their accompanying friends and family members, can expect traditional hearty and home-made Karoo cuisine. Karoo lamb – as one would expect – is the cornerstone of the dinner menus.

Thanks to the Enduroplanet in Bloemfontein, the official bike shop of the TyrePlus-Tygervalley Trek2Teebus, riders will also be able to book their bikes in for full services during the event. That is not all however; entrants to the race will receive a 15% discount voucher – eligible from the date of entry to the 28th of April 2019 – to spend at the Enduroplanet bike shop in Bloemfontein or online.

Alternatively Enduroplant clients who spend R30 000 or more will receive a free solo entry to the 2019 Trek2Teebus, while those who spend R60 000 or more will receive a free team entry. This provides another added incentive to upgrade one’s bicycle now for the 2019 cycling season. Entries to the 2019 TyrePlus-Tygervalley Trek2Teebus are open and would-be entrants have the option to take part as solo riders or as part of a two person team. Additional options which can be selected during the online entry process include luxury camping, non-rider camping and meal tickets, meal tickets for children and the option to pitch an additional tent of one’s own for the younger members of the family. All these details and more can be found on the event’s website: www.petrichoradventures.co.za

DATES SET FOR 2019 FNB WINES2WHALES

Entries to the Western Cape’s largest mountain bike stage race, FNB Wines2Whales open on Valentines Day, 14 February 2019. The FNB Wines2Whales, set in the Western Cape with SA’s favourite trails has set its dates for 2019. These superb trails remain the biggest draw for new and returning riders and the 2019 events will again feature continued route refinement, as is the FNB Wines2Whales tradition. As is the famous W2W gees; the festive spirit which spreads through the field ensuring smiles, laughter and banter on the trails from Lourensford to Hermanus. Given the popularity of the race and limited entries, participants are encouraged to enter as soon as possible to avoid the disappointment of missing out. This is especially key for the 2019 race as the organising team at Grandstand Management have big plans to continue to improve the rider experience. “2018 was a baptism by heat, wind and protest action for us as the new owners of FNB Wines2Whales,” Michael Flinn, the Managing Director of Grandstand Management smiled. Hinting at what is to come Flinn continued: “Without tempting fate, we hope that having the natural disasters out of the way for a few years, we can really show off what Grandstand can bring to the W2W experience.” “Riders can expect us to continue to refine and evolve the events, with the riding and post-stage experiences our key focus. So stay tuned for updates throughout the year as we announce subtle improvements to the route and race village.” One of the key traditions of FNB Wines2Whales is the opening of entries on Valentine’s Day.

Riders who took part in any of the 2018 events will have 24 hours to beat the rush though, as entries open for them at 09:00 on Wednesday, 13 February. General entries open the following day, on the 14 February, also at 09:00. Do not miss the trills of riding from Lourensford Wine Estate – trekking up the historical Gantouw Pass, whooping through the Elgin Valley, relaxing at the spectacular Oak Valley Wine Estate and descending to the azure waters of the Indian Ocean – to Hermanus. Save the 2019 FNB Wines2Whales dates - Chardonnay 25-27 October, Pinotage 28-30 October, and Shiraz 1-3 November 2019.

SIX CAT 1 UCI RACES SCHEDULED FOR SA XCO CUP SERIES 2019 SA Cups #1 and #2 together with SA Cups #5 and #6 are back-to-back race events on the Saturday and Sunday. Hosting six Category 1 races is an extremely expensive exercise for Cycling SA and local organisers. The back-to-back model is set to reduce organisational costs for the events as well as reducing travel costs for riders. This programme has been used extensively in other countries with substantially positive results. SA Cups #2 and #6 will feature UCI Categories only, while the balance of the SA Cups will incorporate both UCI and non-UCI categories. This will result in six UCI events and four non-UCI events. For the purposes of the SA Cup Series, the best five of six results will count for overall positions in the UCI events for the series, while all four results will count in non-UCI events. Schedule for SA XCO Cup Series and WC XCO Series 2019 Photo: SA XCO Cup Series - Photo credit: Cycling SA

The Cycling SA and UCI calendars both reflect six SA MTB Cup Series races for XCO in 2019. All races are Category 1 races for Elites and Juniors, while the Junior races on 2 February and 15 June 2019 form part of the UCI Junior World Series. South Africa is the only National Federation internationally hosting six Category 1 events. The reasoning behind this is to ensure a maximum point haul for South Africa in the qualifying process for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and to ensure that our riders obtain favourable rankings, and therefore starting positions, in UCI World Cups and other international races.

SA XCO Cup Series #1 & #2 (UCI Cat 1) and Junior World Series together with WC #1 will be held on 2-3 February 2019 at Bloemendal, Durbanville. On 15-16 March WC #2 will follow (Venue to be confirmed) with WC #3 at Bloemendal 2 on 26-27 March. SA XCO Cup Series #3 will be hosted on 30 March at Happy Valley Conservancy, Bloemfontein. The Western Cape Champs and WC #4 is scheduled for 17-18 April at Reebokskloof, whereafter the SA XCO Cup Series #4 will take place on 4 May at Mankele MTB Park, Nelspruit. SA XCO Cup Series #5 and #6 (UCI Cat 1) and UCI Junior World Series will take place on 15-16 June at Cascades MTB Park, Pietermaritzburg.

ADDED VALUE FOR MOUNTAIN BIKERS AT GRABOUW 12HR - OMI DAM A new mountain bike event was recently added to the cycling calender in the Western Cape. The Grabouw 12hr - Omi Dam, latest addition to the MTB-Adventures stable will take place on 6 April 2019 with the race venue at the Grabouw Country Club situated next to the Eikenhof Dam. Grabouw 12hr - Omi Dam was a bain wave by Johan Kriegler, founder of other unique mountain bike events including the Wines2Whales, Houw Hoek MTB Tour, Greyton MTB Tour and other events. “I was contemplating this new event idea for a long time, as there are currently too many MTB events. MTB’ers in the Western Cape have got so many trail riding options that MTB events must now add an unique value to make it worthwhile; for the rider as well as the organiser,” said Johan. “We used to participate in the 24hr Grabouw MTB event at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club more than 20 years ago. It was one of my best MTB experiences with friends and family camping on the cricket grounds, with the route running through the race village. This allowed supporters and co-riders to chill next to the route, in the comfort of a chair or matrass, giving sound advice and motivation,” he continues. The beautiful Eikenhof Dam offers a scenic 10km Omi dam circular route with 100m of climbing, with the Grabouw Clubhouse and Race Village visible from most parts of the route. The race starts at 10h00 on Saturday morning and finishes at 22h00 the evening. The twelve hours will allow riders to register, pitch a tent, get on their bikes, doing laps (solo or teams of 2 or 4), chill in between, ride a bit with a light in the dark and then finish in time for a late braai and kuier and then have a good rest.

Grabouw 12hr - Omi Dam has the DNA of a 24hr event, but offers a better social and recovery component. The event offers two main categories: for scholars (only teams of 4) and adults (solo, teams of 2/4), plus additional categories for men, women or mixed. Online entries open on 1 February 2019. LANGEBERG LINK MTB

CYCLE THE 3-DAY LANGEBERG LINK MTB IN FARMING LANDSCAPES Entries are now open for the third edition of the 3-Day Langeberg Link MTB to be held on 20-21-22 September 2019. The event will be held near the Overberg town of Swellendam, taking place mostly on private land, not open to the public. The extreme beauty of the Swellendam area speaks for itself! Set in the most beautiful farming landscape, with cycling routes through canola fields, in, up, and through the Langeberg mountains overlooking the Overberg as far as the eye can see, with Bonnievale in the west, and Swellendam in the east, makes this an event, one not to be missed. Another reason for having a MTB event in the area was to identify and establish an event that will benefit and involve the local community, whilst also ensuring the longevity and sustainability of such a mountain bike race. The Langeberg Link MTB will once again be based at Oudewerf Farm, Kliphoogte 11.8km east from the Swellendam N2/R60 intersection with the start and finish-line for all three days inside the large barn. This will enable riders to feel part of the hospitality of the local people, who will be on hand to provide refreshments to tired riders. The Langeberg Link MTB route has never before been cycled on by any race before 2017, and will once again take place on the same route, situated mostly on private land, not open to the public – thus ensuring the uniqueness of the event. The track, where access is limited, is purposely designed that cyclists can enjoy the overwhelming beauty of fauna and flora in the area and experience some breathtaking views of waterfalls. The race is open to all mountain bike enthusiasts. Riders can choose between a long route, or a short route and the event also offers solo entries in all three days, or single days. Route Day 1: Night race - Day 1 will also see an all new ‘night race’. This will be a 4km lap route on the farm, starting at 19h00 where riders will be able to finish as many laps as possible within an hour. Riders will have to enter and exit the barn on completion of each lap in order for timing to be done correctly. Day 2: The second day is a fairly ‘relaxed’ ride and does include some ‘gravel travel’. The 52km, 900m ascent takes the riders mainly on undulating gravel roads, with some off-road sections alongside the ripening wheat. Day 3: The third day will take riders into the Langeberg Mountain and will be more challenging, The 28km, 520m ascent will test your legs along the side of the mountain and across more farm land with scenery that will reward your effort. Although day 3 will be somewhat shorter than day 2, it will be over terrain never before utilized by mountain bikers. Hill Challenge: The ‘challenging hill’ will be awaiting the riders on Day 3. Besides a ‘king and queen of the mountain’ award, there will be a prize for the first person to cycle to the top, otherwise the prize will have to go to the cyclist who manages to cycle furthest up that hill! Services All water points will be well positioned and will be well-stocked along the route on all three days - manned by enthusiastic people from the local community. Timekeeping will be handled by the Great-Time team that captured the times and provided an excellent service in the past, which will enable riders to use their times for seeding for other races. Langeberg Link MTB is a Cycling SA sanctioned event and obtained the required Land/Nature Reserve access permits. The riders will be assisted by marshals and well signposted arrows on route, a Sweep vehicle and in addition a medical vehicle to provide medical support. Cost Entry fees for the three-day event is R1400 per cyclist, and single stages sell at R500 per person per day, and for the kids under 10, R50 per day - provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult. It should be noted that accommodation is excluded from the entry fees and can be done via www.swellendam-info.co.za. This is an excellent opportunity to bring the family and enjoy the hospitality of the farming community and explore the foothills of the majestic Langeberg range in the countryside near Swellendam on the Garden Route. On-line entries can be done via www.entrytime.com For more information contact 074 457 6777 or visit www.langeberglinkmtb.com

WC ROAD & TT CHAMPS CROWNED IN DE RUST Eden Cycling hosted the Western Cape Road and Time Trial Championships on 5-6 January 2019 at the Tante Maria Padstal near De Rust with about 200 riders from Eden, Cape Winelands and Cape Metropole competing in their respective age categories to be crowned as Western Cape Champions. The road race on Saturday as well as the individual Time Trial on Sunday produced excellent results, in preparation for the South African Road and Time Trial Championships to be held in Gauteng from 7-10 February 2019.

In the women’s road race it was a battle between Liezel Jordaan and Catherine Colyn who came first and second respectively. Liezel also won the women’s time trial. In the Veteran Men 30 - 34, Theuns van der Bank successfully defended his Time Trial title, while South African Champion Fred van Zyl riding in the Veteran Men 70+ category, took the title in both disciplines.

The riders enjoyed the route that has not been used for a road race in recent times. The venue for the race was at the Tante Maria Padstal near the Stompdrift dam with all the routes in the direction of Uniondale and back. As part of the farm Doornkraal, Tante Maria Padstal with its modest old world character and rich history was the perfect venue for the event, making the riders feel at home – away from the busy city life. Most of the riders stayed in and around the town of De Rust, experiencing the unique Klein Karoo hospitality of the farming community. Gregory de Vink, rider for Team Mad Mac p/b häzz from Somerset West started the cycling season on a high note when he won the 147km Western Cape Road race in a sprint finish, earning the U23 Western Cape Champ U23 title, with Louis Visser in second and Byron Munton in third. The elite men’s title was won by Ivan Venter, followed by Chris Cronje in second and Craig Boyes in third. In the elite men’s time trial Chris Cronje took the victory with Ivan Venter in second place. Gregory lost out to Byron Munton by just over a minute in the 38km time trial with Louis Visser rounding off the U23 podium in third.

FRIEDRICH TWINS PASSIONATE ABOUT CYCLING Nicholas and Sophia Friedrich from Durbanville are twins aged 16 who started mountain biking at the age of nine. Nicholas started road cycling two and a half years ago and Sophia followed a year thereafter. Both Nicholas and Sophia are very passionate about cycling, and as grade 11 learners and boarders at Somerset College in Somerset West, they take their bicycles and indoor trainers to school every week. During the December holiday their father Ricco went to Dubai on a business trip and the family joined him for a few days. During their stay in Dubai, Nicholas had the opportunity to take part in a UCI Road Race, the 92km SpinneysDubai92 Cycle race where he came second in the U19 men’s category, 1 second behind the leader. “Cycling is a popular sport in Dubai which allows them to achieve things such as road closures for races which really adds up to the racing experience. The racing is also a lot flatter than here which also means the average speed shoots up.” Photo L - R: Kirstin Roelofse, Charlissa Schultz and Sophia Friedrich - Photo credit: Sonette Visser

“We averaged 45km/h for the race in Dubai which was awesome! The group was also a lot bigger and because the race had a UCI status, there were pros within the bunch and I learned a lot about how to race in a bigger bunch,” Nicholas said.

On 5-6 January 2019 Nicholas and Sophia took part in the Western Cape Road and Time Trial Championships in De Rust. Sophia came third in the 56km road race and the 19km time trial in the Junior / U19 women’s category, while Nicholas came 4th in the Junior/U19 men’s category, as well as the second junior men across the finish-line in the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour where he placed 25th overall. Although Nicholas has done a few mountain bike and track races his main focus is road cycling. His plans for this year includes getting a good result in the Cape Town Cycle Tour junior category, riding all the UCI races in South Africa, and participating in the South African National Junior and Youth Road Championships. Nicholas is also hoping to race overseas during the June and July holiday for more valuable racing experience. Sophia will take part in the Cape Town Cycling Tour Junior category and is focused on achieving a top 5 position at the South African National Junior and Youth Road Championships in the Junior / U19 women’s category during May 2019, which will take place in Kwa Zulu Natal.

TOUR OF GOOD HOPE BROADENS APPEAL WITH SOLO OPTION The Takealot Tour of Good Hope has broadened its appeal with the addition of a race for solo cyclists. The five-day road tour takes place in the Cape Winelands from 4 - 8 March 2019, and will offer a pro-elite tour, an amateur tour with a team focus, and the new solo race. All three events will include a general classification for individual riders. Fritz Pienaar, of race organisers ASG Events, said the solo option was added in response to a call from riders who did not feel the need to ride as part of a team. “There was a lot of interest from riders who have participated in the past as individuals to keep a solo section,” said Pienaar. “They were not so keen to ride in a team event and did not want to be forced to join one.” He felt it would add value to the event and tied in with an approach of being inclusive. Pienaar said the pro-elite race, which boasts UCI status for the first time, would be run under the governing body’s regulations while the rules for the amateur team event would Photo: Tour of Good Hope - Photo credit: Robert Ward / Tour of Good Hope remain unchanged. ENTRIES OPEN FOR 2019 CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR JUNIOR The annual Cape Town Cycle Tour Junior will be all kinds of fun when it returns on Sunday, 3 March 2019. There are three routes, all within the Cape Town Stadium Precinct, that will offer budding little bike riders the opportunity to experience cycling in a safe and controlled environment. The 1.3km is geared toward introducing youngsters between the ages of 0 and 6 years to the basics of cycling. Older kids between the ages of 6 and 12 years can attempt the longer 4km or 7km routes, which offer the more experienced young riders more of a challenge. Parents must accompany the 1.3km route entrants on foot, while the longer route cyclists can be accompanied by a parent on a bike. The “no helmet, no ride” rule applies to both parents and riders on the longer routes. In keeping with the vibe of Lifecycle Week, of which the Cape Town Cycle Tour Junior forms a part, the event will be about so much more than just time on the bike. The day will also feature loads of excitement and surprises – from spot prizes, shows and other great activities. Photo: Cape Town Cycle Tour Junior - Photo credit: Cape Town Cycle Tour

THE PPA SPORTIVE SERIES KICKS OFF THE CYCLING SEASON The first in the eight-event PPA Sportive Series kicked off at the Simonsvlei wine estate on 27 January 2019. With a 97km or 38km distance to chose from - the longer version provided riders with a decent challenge in 912m of climbing. Like all events in the series, this fun ride is aimed at all cyclists, from beginners to experienced riders, and offers the perfect platform for those wanting to keep fit riding road events throughout the year, improving their times and setting a new personal best. The series promises to be a great test for endurance and stamina for anyone brave enough to take on the challenge of the longer routes and, while completing all eight events will be a great source of personal achievement, each one is also a standalone event, so riders are not required to enter all in the Sportive Series.

Events in the Series: PPA Sportive #2: 17 Feb, Windmeul Winery (91km/38km); PPA Sportive #3: 31 March, Simonsvlei wine estate (97km/38km), PPA Sportive #4: 5 May, Windmeul Winery (91km/38km); PPA Sportive #5: 2 June, Perdeberg winery (109km/39km); PPA Sportive #6: 29 Sept, Simonsvlei wine estate (TBC); PPA Sportive #7: 13 Oct, Perdeberg winery (109km/39km); and PPA Sportive #8: 1 Dec, Simonsvlei wine estate (TBC). Special Finishers Trophy - “This year, we have decided to do away with medals and do something more innovative and challenging – each rider will get a beautiful 3D bicycle puzzle that they can assemble once they have completed all the events. The way it will work is that after each event, riders will receive a few pieces of the trophy … complete all eight events and they can assemble the little road bike on a stand.” “However, even if riders don’t manage to do all the events, they will still be able to buy the missing pieces at a very reasonable cost. We still want everyone to have that trophy to display at their home or office.” For more information visit www.pedalpower.org.za

Munton & Willeit win 2019 Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour Boyes’ attempt to go one better than his second place in 2018 was derailed by a breakaway led by Byron Munton. Twenty kilometres into the race, Munton upped the pace with his Giant Alfa Bodyworks teammate, Chris Cronje, Bronwin Adams, Charl van Wyk and Jacques Lloyd joined the move. By the time the five leaders reached the base of Helshoogte Pass their advantage over the chasing peloton was 2 minutes and 52 seconds. On the Pass Munton and Cronje kept increasing the tempo until Adams, van Wyk and eventually Lloyd could not hold their wheels. By the top of the climb their lead had been reduced by 30 seconds, but the race was theirs to lose.

Byron Munton (Giant Alfa Bodyworks) and Cherise Willeit raced to victory in the 2019 Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour, at Val de Vie Estate, in the Cape Winelands on Sunday, 20 January 2019. The elite men’s and women’s races unfolded in dramatically different fashions; with Munton going on an 80 kilometre break to earn a hard fought win, while Willeit showed all her experience sprinting from a fiercely competitive group. Held in near perfect conditions, the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour started and finished at Val de Vie Estate for the first time this year. Following the same route, which looped through Paarl, Stellenbosch and the villages of Kylemore and Pniel, the change of start/finish location meant that Helshoogte Pass came 65 kilometres into the race.

Despite the efforts behind them, Munton and Cronje’s lead remained unchallenged. Over the next 30 kilometres they held their pursuers at 2 minutes and 20 seconds. In the final 10 kilometres Cronje was beginning to fatigue; but Munton remained strong, taking increasingly long turns on the front. Coming into the finish Cronje acknowledged his teammate’s support by sitting up and cheering Munton over the line – the worthy champion of the 2019 Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour. The pair was followed across the line just under 2 minutes later by a group fiercely contesting third. De Vink held off Lloyd and HB Kruger in the sprint for the minor podium places. Kruger’s fifth meant that Giant Alfa Bodyworks dominated the dais, claiming three of the five podium positions. The elite women’s race the favourites shadowed each other throughout. Showing no ring-rust, returning to racing for the first time since 2017 and just six months after the birth of her second child, Willeit remained composed. Sprinting from within the group, where male compatriots were contesting age group category places, Willeit reigned supreme.

In the elite men’s race the pace was set in the opening kilometres by the Specialized team working for Craig Boyes.

Willeit was followed across the line by Linda Hitchings, junior Kelsey van Schoor, Lucy James and Maroesjka Matthee. Williet’s next goal for the 2019 season is the Cape Town Cycle Tour, which takes place on 10 March 2019.

South Africa tops medal table

at Track Champs in Pietermaritzburg

On the third and final day of the 2019 African Continental Track Cycling Championships that was held at the Sax Young track in Pietermaritzburg from 17-19 January 2019, Team South Africa topped the medal table. The elite men brought the curtain down on the championships with an aggressive points race when the newly crowned omnium champion Joshua van Wyk prevailed after lapping the bunch to win the gold medal. On day 2 of the Championships the national sprint champion Jean Spies successfully defended his African Sprint title and went unbeaten through all the rounds to add the sprint title to his time trial and Keirin titles, taking three gold medals. In the men’s Scratch race Carl Bonthuys was rewarded for his attacking racing when he managed to stay away and claim the gold medal. Newly crowned omnium champion, Joshua van Wyk claimed the gold medal in the Points race, which added to his joint medal with Steven van Heerden in the Madison, which meant that he won three gold medals. Charlene du Preez made a clean sweep in the sprint events, adding the sprint title to her time trial and Keirin titles. She secured three continental titles by the end of the championships. Maroesjka Matthee won a hard fought women’s Scratch race, managing to overcome the defending champion in a closely contested sprint.

In the junior boys category Tiano da Silva dominated the race scoring the most points to secure a gold and won his second gold in the junior scratch race. Newcomer to the junior ranks, Jonathan Bouwer beat South African teammate Mirsab Jordan in the junior sprint final after a hard fought battle. Matthew Fortuin and Bouwer both won gold medals in the Omnium and Keirin events respectively, while collectively the pair won the Madison to secure a total of two gold medals for the former and a total of three gold medals for the latter by the end of the competition. Andrea de Waal beat Nigerian Mary Samuel in the junior women’s sprint to make it a clean sweep for South Africa in all the sprint events, also displaying her dominance in the Scratch race, followed by teammates Mischa Strydom and Charlize Murphy. De Waal's incredible form saw her clinch a total of five medals, including the Time Trial, Keirin and the Madison in a pairing with Mischka Strydom. Strydom claimed gold in the junior women points race and the Omnium, bringing her gold medal tally to three. The Madisons were contested in sweltering heat with South Africa again grabbing the bulk of the medals. The respective African Champions now continue their preparation for participation at the 2019 UCI Track World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland at the end of February 2019.

Kross Racing Team

The three-time UCI Women’s category and two-time Virgin Active Mixed category Absa Cape Epic winner, Ariane Lüthi has joined Kross Racing for the 2019 season. Ariane Lüthi began her sporting adventure in triathlon, quickly becoming known to fans as a multi-talented competitor. However, it was always mountain biking that made her heart beat fastest and she decided to dedicate herself to this uneasy discipline. She has specialised in marathons. The 35-year-old’s greatest achievements include victory in the general classification of the Cape Epic stage race in 2012, 2013 (mix), 2014, 2015 and 2016 (women’s category). The competitor is the current Swiss XCM Champion, and she also reached for the title of national champion in the 2013 and 2016 seasons. Ariane Luthi has a proven track record of many victories in prestigious stage races, such as the Belgian Mountain Bike Challenge 2018, Cape Pioneer 2017 and Perskindol Swiss Epic 2014. In the 2018 season, she also won three races in the UCI Marathon Series. Lüthi took sixth place in last year’s world marathon championships held in Italy. In addition, at the last European championships in the mountain biking marathon at Spilimbergo, Italy, she won the bronze medal. “After racing in South African teams from the beginning of my career, the opportunity to join the Polish Kross Racing Team is a real honour for me and an exciting adventure. Especially since last year it won the general classification of the World Cup,” enthuses Ariane Lüthi. Ariane will be racing a number of stage races in the Western Cape including the Fairtree Simonsberg Contour, Tankwa Trek and Tour of Good Hope in the build-up to the 2019 Absa Cape Epic. At the untamed African mountain bike race she will partner, two-time Olympic Silver Medallist, 2010 XCO and 2003 XCM World Champion, Maja Włoszczowska; as the pair go in search of victory for Kross-Spur Racing. Along with Kross Racing the team will have the support of Spur Steak Ranches for the 2019 Absa Cape Epic. After three years representing Team Spur Lüthi will continue as an ambassador for the Spur School’s Mountain Bike League, despite the team dissolving at the end of 2018. Though Lüthi is Swiss she spends roughly six months of the year training and racing in South Africa, and has become a mainstay of the Stellenbosch mountain biking community. Lüthi’s international calendar will include key stage races and one-day marathons, including the European XCM Championships and the UCI XCM World Championships.

Designers of the new model incorporated design elements depicting a sense of “stylish adventure”, allowing owners to get up and go, no matter the terrain. This smaller SUV maintains high levels of finesse inside and out with its appearance being a perfect combination of athleticism and charisma. The sturdier nose leads into a dynamic profile, robust shoulders, and available 19-inch wheels (VX model), making for a commanding vehicle ready to tackle any road, any time. The implementation of the TNGA platform allows RAV4 to compete in a class of a bolder and tougher SUV, but in a package that is lower and wider. The longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks provide a stable, confident driving platform. For offroad prowess, the shorter front and rear overhangs will assist in RAV4’s ability to overcome rugged terrain. The unibody chassis is 57% more rigid than the previous version. RAV4 incorporates an optimally tuned updated suspension, providing ideal damping for handling, minimum interior cabin noise, and the ultimate in driving comfort. Rush Sports is proud to announce it will hold the exclusive distribution rights to Signal Bikes in South Africa effective from February 2019. Signal Bikes, which was unveiled to the public 21 January 2019 is named after Cape Town’s iconic Signal Hill and shares the city’s unique energy and outdoor lifestyle. Oli Munnik said, “Signal Bikes is the realisation of a dream that aims to create and develop an authentic brand that riders throughout South Africa - from laaities to ballies - aspire to be a part of. Tough enough for the Attakwas Having become accustomed to racing aboard high-end dual suspension mountain bikes, Oli ‘Pinner’ Munnik accepted a challenge to ride this year’s 112km Attakwas Extreme on the sub R20k alloy hardtail Signal Bike. “Of course the ride-experience through the rocky, sandy jeep tracks was not as silky smooth as it would have been on a R100k chariot.” “From the outset, the Signal Elite performed like a street fighter with nothing to lose. The joy. The relief. The satisfaction. It was a brilliant feeling and special moment knowing that the Signal Elite, a sub R20k alloy hardtail, had proved itself tough enough for the Attakwas. This is a finisher’s medal I’ll hang on to,” Oli said.

Every single Herbalife24 product is batch tested for prohibited substances by an independent third party. International football star Cristiano Ronaldo collaborated with Herbalife to create a new sports nutrition product designed to take hydration and performance to the next level. Look at some of the main benefits of new Herbalife24 product, CR7 Drive. Reveal the Science behind CR7 Drive - During exercise, you lose 0.5 - 2 litres of fluid per hour through sweat. This fluid loss is a combination of water and electrolytes (e.g. sodium, potassium and magnesium). As dehydration leads to poorer aerobic performance and increased perceived effort, replacement of fluid and electrolytes during exercise should be a priority. Research shows that carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions such as CR7 Drive enhance water uptake during exercise, which is why CR7 Drive is an ideal choice during workouts, especially while exercising in the heat. The two main factors that cause fatigue during a workout are depletion of the body’s carbohydrate reserves and dehydration due to loss of water and electrolytes in sweat. This impairs sports performance, especially during endurance events in hot weather and/or at high altitude. Studies show that carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks such as CR7 Drive play a role in maintaining performance during this kind of endurance exercise, and compared to plain water, can help to maintain the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. They can also help to sustain performance at the end of a long and hard training session or race. Over 75% of the kcals in a serving of CR7 Drive are from quick-absorbing carbohydrates which enter the bloodstream quickly in the form of glucose. Science has shown that consuming these glucose-providing carbs immediately after strenuous exercise can aid recovery of normal muscle function. The beneficial effect is obtained with the consumption of carbohydrates, from all sources, at a total intake of 4g per kg body weight, at doses, within the first 4 hours and no later than 6 hours, following strenuous exercise.

ADVENTURE SEEKERS SIGN UP FOR DOUBLE THE XTERRA CHALLENGE Adventure seekers Hayley Preen (Hout Bay) and Marc Price (Sandton) have opted for double the challenge of XTERRA by signing up for both the XTERRA Lite and XTERRA Full at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club on Saturday, 23 February 2019 and Sunday, 24 February 2019 respectively. The largest XTERRA in the world, the XTERRA Grabouw Lite features a 400m swim, a +-14km MTB and a +-6.5km Trail Run, while the XTERRA Grabouw Full boasts a 1.5km Swim, a +-25.6km MTB and a +-12.4km Trail Run. A second year Mechanical Engineering student at UCT, Preen started cycling competitively for UCT’s first team in 2018. “I love off-road triathlons, trail running and mountain biking,” says Preen. “XTERRA has always been such a fun event. I was very young when I first started taking part in XTERRA. I literally started with the XTERRA Kids Race. I have taken part in every XTERRA since 2013, either individually or as part of a team. In 2018 I made my debut in the XTERRA Full Race.” “I love the XTERRA weekend,” continues Preen. “I entered the XTERRA Lite with my mom and my dad. My mom will swim, while my dad and I still need to decide who will mountain bike and who will run. I entered the XTERRA Full in the individual category as I look forward to pushing my limits again. XTERRA Grabouw has a world class route. I love the mountain bike discipline, especially the rock garden. The trail run route is also very nice. My goal at the XTERRA Lite is to have fun with my family, while at the XTERRA Full I’d like to finish in a top 10 position.”

According to Price, he is passionate about off-road triathlon. “I started taking part in XTERRA when it was first introduced to South Africa in 2004,” says Price. “The XTERRA route is brutal, but I love it. I’m not a fan of deep, soft sand, but it comes with the territory. The venue is beautiful and well worth the drive. My goal is to podium in my age group category both in the XTERRA Lite on Saturday and the XTERRA Full on Sunday.” For more information visit www.stillwatersports.com
