AFRICAN ASSAULT ON THE ABSA CAPE EPIC

Photo L - R: Absa Cape Epic 2018 African Jersey winners: Julian Jessop & Matthys Beukes - Photo credit: Nick Muzik

The Absa African Special Jersey was created, along with the Burry Stander Memorial Trophy, to foster the growth of elite mountain biking on the continent and to honour the legacy of South Africa’s greatest mountain biker. Now in its seventh edition the category has grown to one of the most fiercely contested within the Absa Cape Epic. The 2019 Absa Cape Epic mountain bike stage race takes place from 17 - 24 March 2019. With three previous winners lining up on two teams and the highly motivated NAD Pro MTB team created almost solely to knock PYGA Euro Steel off their perch the 2019 race will be a humdinger.

In five of the previous six editions the African MTB Team, formerly racing as SCOTT Factory Racing and now as PYGA Euro Steel, have emerged victorious. Matthys Beukes has been ever-present in each of those victories. The George resident was partnered by Phillip Buys in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Gert Heyns rode to victory with Beukes in 2014 and Julian Jessop accompanied him to glory in 2018. Beukes is in fact undefeated in the competition; having not started the 2016 race when USN Purefit’s Darren Lill and Waylon Woolcock took home the title.

“History tells us that the African MTB squad knows exactly what it takes to pull on the red jersey at Val de Vie,” long-time rival Oliver Munnik confirmed. The nine-time Absa Cape Epic finisher, who will be riding his tenth race in 2019 for Signal Bikes, continued: “Consistency is often the key ingredient in triumphing at the Absa Cape Epic.” The five-time category winner Matthys Beukes is not letting his pre-race favourite tag add any pressure to his preparation however. “The Burry Stander Memorial Trophy has really helped to add some depth in South African mountain biking. It’s a good incentive for the guys to race and to get some exposure for the sponsors. Having said that it shouldn’t be the main focus – it’ll be better to aim high on the overall ranking and to just have this as a bonus, but as I said it’s a really good incentive,” the PYGA Euro Steel star explained. PYGA Euro Steel’s rivals Nico Bell and Matt Beers of NAD Pro MTB are encouraged by their 2018 showing, when they wore

DSV Pro Cycling’s pairing of Du Toit and Jessop sees two talented but slightly unheralded riders team up. Jessop is of course the defending Absa African Special Jersey champion while Du Toit raced in support of the African MTB Team in 2015, finishing fifteenth overall. In order to win the category DSV Pro Cycling will have, in all likelihood, to finish well inside the top ten general classification teams. Sixth is the average overall final finishing position of the Absa African Special Jersey winners over the years. In fact Beukes and Jessop’s twelfth is the only time the red jersey wearers have finished outside the top ten teams. Outsiders for the category include the Imbuko Giant, Mad Macs, Darkhorse Wheels and Signal Bikes. The Imbuko Giant squad is made up of Nicol Carstens and Marco Joubert. As Joubert explained they are eagerly anticipating the start of the 2019 race. “I love it; it has a little bit of everything” the two time Absa Cape Epic finisher said. “Nicol [Carstens] and I have different riding

KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!

Photo: 2018 Discovery Triathlon World Cup, Greenpoint Stadium, Cape Town - Photo Credit: Discovery Triathlon World Cup

Cape Town is South Africa’s most active city according to research Discovery released last year called Road to a Healthier South Africa 2018 in which six major cities across the country were measured for how active they are by steps tracked, gym workouts and outdoor activities completed. “For that reason, we are excited to be hosting the Discovery Get Active Weekend in Cape Town. Discovery also aims to make communities healthier and get everyone more active because heart disease, strokes, cancer, diabetes and chronic

lung disease are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide,” says Iona Maclean, Head of Sponsorships and Experiential Marketing at Discovery. “Getting regular exercise, stopping smoking and eating healthier makes a significant difference in bringing these stats down and managing these diseases. Road to a Healthier South Africa 2018 also shows that 50% of South Africans lead sedentary lifestyles, more than double that of the global average of 23%.

“I think this pairing will work well for the 2019 Absa Cape Epic. Especially as both of us really like to suffer and we are both mentally tough. We have done some big epic rides in preparation for this year’s event, drilling each other a bit so I think we have done the right preparation physically and mentally.” Andrew Hill will be taking part in his first Absa Cape Epic since 2014 and will partner Shaun-Nick Bester for Darkhorse Wheels. Mad Macs are represented by the talented young Matthew Keyser and the experienced Charles McFall. The final dark horse team is the Signal Bikes squad of Munnik and Jarrod van den Heever. The younger member of the team will be making his Absa Cape Epic debut alongside one of the most experienced Absa African Special Jersey campaigners. Not content with making his tenth Absa Cape Epic an easy one Munnik and Van Den Heever will be using the race as a testing ground for the newly launched Signal Bikes. While Van Den Heever and Munnik will be having fun, as well as racing as hard as possible, the rest of the Absa African Special Jersey teams have to focus more intently on the task at hand. Pieter du Toit and Phillimon Sebona will be racing their second Absa Cape Epic together in support of their team leaders, PYGA Euro Steel. Du Toit is a talented youngster, while Sebona is one of the sport’s greatest success stories. Rising through the ranks of the Exxaro Mountain Bike Academy, though two victories in the Exxaro Special Jersey competition, to the ranks of elite riders Sebona exemplifies the founding aim of the Absa African Special Jersey competition. By providing the platform for sponsors to gain exposure and therefor encouraging the sponsorship of local riders the race for the Burry Stander Memorial Trophy fosters the growth of African mountain biking.

The new pairing of Marco Joubert and Nicol Carstens, under the banner of Team Imbuko Giant, kicked off their stage racing season at the 2019 Tankwa Trek, the four days of racing was their first outing as a pair and would prove to be vital racing preparation ahead of the ABSA Cape Epic. Stage one got off to a less than ideal start, with Joubert going down within the first kilometre of racing as riders jostled for position heading into the first corner. The team limited their losses and regained focus, moving up to 5th on GC and first African team heading into the final stage. Joubert and Carstens were making their intentions very clear, they were there to race and did their best to distance their world-class rivals on numerous occasions throughout the race. Drama then struck on the fast and ferocious final stage, where Carstens experienced a nasty sidewall puncture. Two plugs, some calmness and composure, as well as a wheel change at the next tech zone allowed them to continue the chase, limiting time lost on the stage and ensuring that they finished 5th overall and as first African team.

The 2019 Tankwa Trek was the first race as a team, it was their first warning shot fired ahead of the ABSA Cape Epic. As part of a heavy training block and early season preparations, the team travelled to Port Elizabeth to partake in the Herald Cycle Tour MTB, where Joubert finished 2nd overall behind DSV’s Arno du Toit, with Carstens in 3rd and team manager, Max Sullivan, in 4th position. These races, including the Imbuko Wines Big 5 Challenge, all form part of the plan and preparation to win the African riders Red Jersey competition at the 2019 Cape Epic. SWEAT, DUST, TEARS, EXCITEMENT, NERVES & TRIUMPH AT IMBUKO BIG 5 MTB CHALLENGE

“The best single day race with the most amazing single tracks I’ve ever done”, “This thing is brutal, but I’m definitely doing it again!” were some of the comments as riders crossed the finish line. Other highlights of the day included a world-class, well-marked route where hardcore climbs are outlined with breath-taking views. Well placed and thoughtful waterpoints carried the riders through the challenges of up hills and heat and the ice-cold neck cloths handed out at the end made it all worth it! The venue, catering and commentating was on point with friendly accommodating staff on stand by for all needs. The Imbuko Big 5 MTB Challenge, an event not to be missed in years to come and as of now definitely the benchmark for ultimate endurance. “Thank you to all our sponsors who made this day possible: Imbuko Wines, Gravel Travel, Giant Bicycles, Nedbank, Endurade, DHL, Into Cycling, ADT Fedility, Squirt Cycling Products and Full Suss.”

The very first Imbuko Big 5 MTB Challenge took on 23 February 2019. Sweat, dust, tears, excitement, nerves and triumph to name but a few characteristics of one of the most challenging events on the MTB calendar! The day started off cool and fresh with a tinge of nervous excitement hanging in the air. The almost 300 riders (seriously unexpected numbers for a first event) lined up for what will be a vertical MTB challenge like no other. The clock stroke 7AM and the Imbuko Big 5 Challenge launched into the paddles for its maiden race. Three Centurian Vaude team riders, Daniel Geismayr (1st), Jochen Kass (2nd) and Vincent Dorn(3rd) took the top 3 spots with the 2 Imbuko Giant Pro riders in 4th and 5th position who completed the podium. Simon Andreassen, former Junior world-champ, had bad luck cutting his tyre halfway into the route, but still finished in a very well accomplished 11th position! Candice Lill dominated the lady’s division coming in way ahead of the rest and with an overall 13th position. She was followed by Katie Lennard in second and Hanlie Booyens in third.

EXCLUSIVE START LOCATION FOR WOMEN’S ELITE INVITATIONAL RACE Following a highly successful trial run in 2018, the 2019 edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour will once again feature a Women’s Elite Invitational start group. All elite and U23 women who have been seeded into the % start group for Sunday, 10 March, will have the option to start at Recreation Road in Fish Hoek. The start time for the Invitational will be at 06:00 – light permitting – and the distance is 78km. This will ensure a clear run all the way to the finish without traffic from any of the men’s groups.

Kim Le Court (Demacon MaxWax Racing) – who won the 2018 women’s race – was full of praise for the pioneering format following her win last year. “It was great for the women to have their own race - it made for positive racing and team tactics were crucial,” she said. “I think we showed that we deserved to have our own race,” she said. “This ensured a clear run all the way to the finish and it was epic.” As in 2018 the prize monies and title for the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour will be awarded to the winner of this start group. The U23 category title will also be awarded to a participant from this group. For the sake of clarity, should an U23 rider win the event, they will receive both the overall winners title as well as the U23 title. All other women’s age category awards will go to those participants in the traditional 109km Cape Town Cycle Tour. Lifecycle Week: The Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifecycle Week is a nine-day celebration of all things cycling, Cape Town embraces human power and celebrates the healthy lifestyle and freedom of movement the humble bicycle offers all its inhabitants and visitors.

MARISKE & JENNIE CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT TANKWA TREK Local fans were elated to see a set of South African hands on the Tankwa Trek trophy this year. On 10 February 2019 Silverback Fairtree, South Africa’s own Mariske Strauss and Swedish rider Jennie Stenerhag stormed to their second consecutive stage victory and the overall women’s title at the Tankwa Trek. The Silverback Fairtree team had a slow start on stage one with a third and a second place in stage two. The ladies managed to take over the lead after a gruelling stage win on stage three. The battle was extremely tight on the final day with a gap of one minute and twenty-five seconds putting Team Summit’s Annie Last and Candice Lill into second and Ghost Factory Racing’s Anne Terpstra and Barbara Benko into third. “This was the perfect way to lay down a marker for the rest of the season. It’s so good for me individually, and for women’s cycling in general, to have the opportunity to compete against such an elite field,” a clearly ecstatic Strauss said.

Silverback’s full suspension race bike, the SESTA SBC were Mariske and Jennie’s machine of choice, for reliability, seamless grip, control and comfort through all four torturous stages. SilverbackFairtree thoroughly enjoyed the event at Kaleo Guest Farm and looking forward to dominating more podiums at the 2019 ABSA Cape Epic. Adding a cherry to the top of an already highly successful event, Momentum and Biogen announced the extension of their contract for another three years. Tankwa Trek riders will head home with elation as they look forward to the 2020 instalment.

CRANKING THE CAPE No other mountain biking experience boasts seven days of luxury pedalling across the whole of the Western Cape. Jacques Marais was there to experience the agony and the ecstasy. The annual TransCapeMTB Stage Race - truly a ‘Bicycle Journey across the Cape’ - arguably rates as one of South Africa’s most scenic and exhilarating mountain-biking events. Riders from around the globe saddle up every year to crank from the Garden Route, across the Karoo, Hessequa and Overberg Regions, all the way to the Cape Winelands, on their quest for headspace and cycling satisfaction. Awesome food, exceptional accommodation, a diverse route and lekker people is what you can expect along the way - and really, what more could you ask for? Day 1 saw the riders setting off from Olympia Estate in George and pedalling 80km-odd to finish at Chandelier Game Reserve. Here the riders had a chance to chat to Sheila, the tame giraffe, before setting cruising the backroads to Rooiberg Lodge, continuing their love affair with the mountainous and arid Klein Karoo, before hammering into the Hessequa Region, with their third stop in the farming town of Riversdale. A festival atmosphere welcomed them after a harsh and hot day in the saddle, with Swellendam and the Overberg now firmly in their sights. Swashbuckling singletrack through the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy make this one of the premier stages of this race. The next destination was gorgeous Greyton, with a superb gravel dash to the stunning finish venue at ‘The Oaks Estate’, where many an ice cold beer were enjoyed on green lawns under majestic oak trees. Day 6 constituted a meandering ride alongside, and over the Sonderend River, following quiet farm roads winding through endless wheat fields, but with a few solid climbs thrown in for good measure. The final stage started from the historic Houw Hoek Inn on the edge of the Elgin Valley, where a world-famous trail network boasting quality, purpose-built singletrack tested the skills level of some of the Transcape MTB Heroes. A furiously fast tarmac section awaited them along the Franschhoek pass as they free-wheeled into the Holden Manz Wine Estate to claim their medals, a few well-deserved glasses of wine, and another gourmet meal for which this event has become so famous. MOUNTAIN BIKING AT MURATIE

WHERE NATURE, WINE AND STORIES MAKE A MEMORABLE RIDE Situated 8km out of Stellenbosch (on the R44 direction Paarl), and a mere 45-minute drive from Cape Town, Muratie Wine Estate is steeped in history and tradition. One of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, it was established in 1685, when German soldier Laurens Campher and his wife, Ansela, an emancipated slave, founded a winemaking tradition that would span over centuries. Their captivating story, and those of the many other legendary characters of Muratie, are immortalised in the estate’s wines named after them. It is a place where visitors can still experience wine farm life in its truest form, with rich heritage and warm hospitality creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. Along with our world famous handcrafted wines, Muratie’s mountain bike trails have been creating a lot of interest among the more avid mountain bikers. Muratie has become one of the jewels in the crown of the respected Simonsberg Conservancy mountain bike route. Various events have been making use of the tracks (like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, Cape Epic and Fairtree mountain bike events), which can lay claim to some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Muratie is perched on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, one of the Cape Winelands’ most recognisable natural landmarks. This majestic mountain rises nearly 1 400 metres above sea level and forms a boundary between the wine growing regions of Stellenbosch (to the southwest), Paarl (to the northeast), and Franschhoek (to the east). It is home to more than 60 bird species, more than 120 indigenous plants, including the rare Swartland Shale Renosterveld and other fynbos, a wide variety of trees and larger shrubs, and varied wildlife such as tortoises, lizards, vlei rats, striped mice, duikers, dassies and porcupines. As a member of the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy, Muratie is committed to preserving this sensitive mountain ecosystem through sustainable practices. “By teaming up with Dirtopia we have managed to offer mountain bike enthusiasts some of the most exciting, free-flowing singletracks to enjoy. The major part of this route is singletrack. There are some obvious switchbacks (one has to ascent over 600 metres during your ride). With this comes the necessary downhills, all very exhilarating and deserving of your full attention.” “While our tracks are sufficiently technical to provide a challenge for intermediate and experienced riders, the Simonsberg Trail system also features routes that are easy enough for beginners to try.”

There are various routes that you can take in order to tailor-make your distance. The standard ride is called The Doctor’s Ward round. This covers about 27km and will give you 800m of elevation. Once you are done with your ride you are welcome to have a great breakfast at Muratie’s Farm Kitchen restaurant where only the best coffee is served. If it is a hearty lunch or sweet indulgence you are after, you will also find much to savour here. To end the day’s effort, the tasting room is open seven days a week and you will be able to taste and buy some of Muratie’s fine hand-crafted wines. The terms of enjoying our mountain bike trails are standard. No helmet no ride, and permits are mandatory (day or year permits can be obtained in our tasting room). “Please respect our tracks and the properties that you are traversing. Stick to the designated routes and help us to protect our pristine environment by not littering.” The route opens at 07:00 – sign in at the cellar. Zapper mobile payment portal is available to facilitate payments.

CAPE TRAILS FIXING & REBUILDING W2W TRAILS A devastating fire that started on 24 January, 2019 on a farm along the Van der Stel’s Pass was exacerbated when a fire that was extinguished above Houw Hoek, flared up again. The fire has brought farmers, local companies and fire-fighting authorities together in what has been a five-day intensive battle to control the blaze. The fire, which has burned around 11,000 hectares, has been fueled by gale-force winds. No infrastructure has been lost with minimal damage to vineyards and orchards in the Elgin Valley. The fire mostly affected the Wines2Whales trails in the Paul Cluver Estate and to a lesser extent Houwhoek and Eikenhof farm. Due to the trail damage at Paul Cluver, the trails are closed until further notice, whilst the FNB Wines2Whales trail crew, Cape Trails are busy fixing and rebuilding trails and bridges.

Poffies entrance, slightly burnt, need to replace four poles and a barrel slates

“We built these magic structures mostly with wood, a natural product and then periodically nature claims it back. It’s an unfortunate reality but it also creates an opportunity to better the previous.” Johan Kriegler, founder of Wines2Whales. “Fortunately the largest bridges on Paul Cluver; Witklippies 1 & 2 and Pofadder survived the fire, with various degrees of damage. We are also looking at reducing the number of large bridges by building more spectacular contour trails against steep inclines; a skills niche of Cape Trails. We plan to re-open the Paul Cluver trails within 2 months,” Johan concludes. The eleventh edition of the FNB Wines2Whales will be one which mountain bikers will not want to miss. The 2019 Chardonnay, Pinotage and Shiraz events finish will return to the laidback beachfront village of Onrus. The dates will be 25 - 27 October FNB W2W Chardonnay, 29 - 31 October FNB W2W Pinotage and 1-3 November 2019 FNB W2W Shiraz. For more information visit www.wines2whales.com

Although Kransvoël was not affected by the fire, the time has arrived to replace Kransvoël and the Ark in the Cluver’s Amphitheatre, which was built with untreated wood seven years ago. This is a Cape Trails “padkamp” their BH sponsored bikes neatly parked whilst they are busy building a new contour along a steep incline to replace these two bridges.

Anyone for skydiving? The exit is gone – creating a dead 8m drop, this will require some high altitude wooden bridge building

Luckily Witklippies 2 survived with minimum damage – a couple of new poles and barrel slates with get it back to the original and creative state.

Damn - where are the downhillers and the rockhoppers? This will require some re-construction minds, energy, time, material and money.

KOLSVLEI TRAIL PARK PLAYS HOST TO KOLSVLEI MTB Challenge or chill, the Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge, presented by Boland SUPERSPAR, offers both and everything in-between on the 30th of March 2019. Located just outside the town of Piketberg, the Kolsvlei Trail Park plays host to the event which offers far more than its imposing name suggests – with a trail run, fun run, fun ride, relay and fewer lap options along with the flagship 4 lap 100KM MTB Challenge. The Kolsvlei Trail Park is nestled in the rolling hills of the Swartland; which in March lie fallow awaiting the winter rains and the planting of wheat. The region is the breadbasket of the province and boasts a tight-knit farming community; all of whom are eager to share their beautiful home town and platteland hospitality with visitors from afield. This hospitality echoes as the ethos of the event. Riders and runners are encouraged to bring the family along, to spectate or take part in one of the shorter distance events. The Boland SUPERSPAR, food stalls, a pop-up coffee shop, cash bar and complimentary tractor rides to spectator points will ensure those not participating share in the challenge experience of the riders too. In the main event riders will seek to complete 4 laps of the 25km long Kolsvlei Trail Park route. Each lap features 388m of climbing, bringing the total for those who complete the full distance to a shade over 1 550m of elevation gain. While the ultimate aim is to complete all 4 laps, riders will be rewarded with 50km and 75km medals if they complete 2 or 3 of the 4 laps too. Alternatively the Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge offers the opportunity of a 4 rider relay challenge. Each rider can thus dig deep and race a single 25km lap at full speed, rather than pacing their efforts to last the full 100km distance. While the serious mountain bike racing is underway the less competitive can take on a single lap fun ride too. For the trail runners a 10km route provides the opportunity for a trot through the farmlands. The course is perfect for competitive runners looking to challenge themselves to a fast run or less avid trail runners simply in search of a manageable route. Along with the trail run there is also a 5km fun run on offer.

PAGE 6

It makes use of farm roads so it is ideal for walkers, parents pushing strollers and the little ones on balance bikes. Competitive riders will be excited to note that Nexus 24 Segment Challenge for the King and Queen of the Mountain offers R4 000 in prize money at the Kolsvlei 100KM MTB Challenge. R1 000 cash prizes will be awarded to the men and women with the fastest times, on Strava, over the two Nexus 24 segments. These will be marked with Nexus 24 flags and highlighted in the race briefing. The segment challenge is open to all 100KM MTB Challenge and relay riders. COMMUNITY

STELLENBOSCH TRAIL FUND - EERSTE RIVER STEWARDSHIP These workers are jointly funded by the Stellenbosch Municipality and STF and ably managed by Unathi Msophi, a welcome addition to the STF team. Trail maintenance is made easier and more efficient by the use of their sponsored Land Rover to transport workers and equipment. In addition to all of this thorough and very necessary housekeeping, new signboards have been put up with a new map and colour scheme and these nifty boards were redone with the help of Dennis Moss Partnership.

The Stellenbosch Trail Fund (STF) is steward for the Eerste River which extend from the point at which it enters Stellenbosch south of Karindal, the “Hangbrug,” to where the Eerste and Plankenbrug Rivers converge, a distance of approximately 4,5km. Stewardship action is primarily geared toward restoring the health of the river and focuses on, clearing invasive alien plants (IAPs), and pollution control, clearing up of general waste, and promoting the establishment of endemic aquatic and riparian vegetation. The ongoing focus of river stewardship in partnership with Wildlands is the clearing of IAPs along the riparian zone of the river, chipping or removing biomass to landfill, pollution control, planting of indigenous shrubs and trees after rehabilitation and building and maintaining cycle paths and walkways along the river banks. All the river works are guided by an Environmental Management Plan drafted in the field, with virtually a treeby-tree inspection, identification and treatment application planned by the Stellenbosch Environmental Planner, Schalk van der Merwe, the Wildlands Project Manager, Lydia van Rooyen, and where applicable, other landowners such as the University of Stellenbosch’s Facility Management team, the Engineering Department of the Municipality, and private residents or interested and affected parties. The Trail-building Program The STF has been building and maintaining trails in and around Stellenbosch since 2011. The areas which the STF has been responsible for or contributed to building walking, hiking and mountain biking trails and tracks include Coetzenberg, Eden Forest in Paradyskloof, Botmaskop, Jonkershoek, G-Spot and on the Eerste River in the area known as Koloniesland. These trails have been very busy in 2018 and there have been a number of people instrumental in the continued care and maintenance of them. The continued efforts on G-Spot of Mark Gordon has kept their own world famous trail gem in tip-top shape. The formalizing of a single track line from the gap-jumps to the top jeep track and G-Spot has also been a great addition.

As far as general maintenance is concerned, Eden once again received a fair amount of attention with the Origin of Trails in mind, while further work will continue in 2019 in the run-up to the Absa Cape Epic. Mont Marie has also had a fair bit of attention with some damage being repaired. In conjunction with Corrie Muller and the Stellenbosch Municipality, STF now have the services of their very own Trail Team.

PAGE 8

With the radio support from ABC Security and on a daily basis, guides patrol the trails next to the river and jeep tracks. A new pump track in Die Boord has been introduced for kids thanks to the combined efforts of Coenraad Basson, Mark Gordon, Matt Daniel, Org Groenewald, the Conrad Stolz team, local residents, the Stellenbosch Municipality, and STF. A lightweight all-purpose running/outdoor short sleeve top is available for sale in STF online store. Plans for 2019 The maintenance and upgrading of all of the public and many of the privately owned hiking, running and biking trails in and around Greater Stellenbosch will continue. After the success of the UCI World Cup mountain bike event last year, they are looking forward to major international events in their area such as the Absa Cape Epic and the first South African leg of the MaXi-race, an international endurance trail running event. The popular annual STF trail running event - the Bartinney2Bartinney will be held on 11 May 2019.

Notable events and happenings One of their most notable events was the training of their mountain bike guides. It had become apparent to them over the years that increasing numbers of international and visiting riders were frequenting STF managed trails and that qualified mountain bike guides would greatly assist in helping these riders to safely navigate the trail network. The concept of the Trail Guide Academy is based on enabling members of their local community to train and qualify as mountain bike guides, with a view to running their own guiding businesses on STF trails and with STF support. A pilot project was started with three candidate trainees in January 2019, and Titan Racing Bikes took up the offer to partner with the STF in this endeavour along with Pay@, their sponsorship and support has been invaluable to the guides in these early days. Vuyo, Sora and Clint are settling in to their new enterprise with the continued support and mentoring of the STF. “Please support them - whether directly or by recommendation to others. Making our trails safe and economically accessible to the broader community is in the interests of all that use and enjoy them. These guides were also the happy beneficiaries of a joint STF-Qhubeka economic development initiative, which saw Qhubeka donate five of their bikes as founding equipment for a bike rental enterprise which is run from the Trail Centre by them under the guidance and mentorship of the STF.” STF held their annual fund raiser and auction at Tokara in November 2018 and thanks to their generous sponsors and supporters they were able to raise R291 000 for their 2019-projects. IMPEY CLINCHES THE DOUBLE, MOOLMAN PASIO SECURES WOMEN’S TITLE Defending Elites Men’s champion Daryl Impey’s current form saw his Time Trial and Road Race efforts rewarded with the national jerseys in both disciplines, while multiple National Champion Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio clinched the Elite Women’s road race title at the 2019 SA ROAD National Championships held in the City of Tshwane from 7-10 February 2019. Daryl Impey had just come off the historic back-to-back win at the Tour Down Under in Australia. His Time Trial win was his seventh consecutive victory having won eight in total since 2011 (2011, 2013-2019). The road race win marked his second consecutive victory. As the sole starter for Mitchelton-SCOTT, and the much talked about target for South African based team Dimension-Data, Impey knew he was in for a challenge and had his back against the wall in the final 30km before recovering in impressive style to win solo with Ryan Gibbons in second, followed by team rider, Stefan de Bod from Team Dimension Data. The Elite women’s Time Trial saw Liezel Jordaan collect her second consecutive national title beating Zanri Rossouw with Juanita Venter in third. On the fourth lap in the women’s elite race Juanita Venter broke away to deliver an aggressive performance which saw her maintain the lead for approximately 90km. On the final lap, Moolman-Pasio passed a devastated Venter, pushed her limits as she soloed towards the finish line to claim the victory in the elite women’s race with Venter in second place and Van de Winkel in third. This year’s title was Moolman-Pasio fifth, having notched up the victories from 2012-2015 in previous years. Marc Pritzen was crowned SA national U23 men’s road champion with Byron Munton in second and Jason Oosthuizen in third. Tiffany Keep won the title in the women’s U23 category and finished fourth overall.

The diverse Para-cycling categories saw a mix of international and national champions on the start line of their respective events to tackle the slightly different 10km route, which excluded the steep Edmond Street. Multiple National Champion and UCI World Champion Pieter du Preez added the national road race and time trial titles to his list of career accomplishments. Palesa Manaleng’s H3 handcycle race saw her finish in a time of 01:21:32, while she completed the TT in a time of 00:53:11. Lionel Scholtz beat Juan Odendaal by five minutes in the C3 class; while the roles were reversed in the TT where Odendaal claimed the title by just under a minute. C2 racer Phillo Verlaat placed a 10-minute time advantage between himself and second placed Oswald Kydd, while his victory margin in the TT was considerably tighter against Kydd. Andries van Aarde (C1) finished the road race and scored the double with the TT medal as well. The competitive T2 tricycle race saw Goldy Fuchs stay ahead of his challenger Gerhard Viljoen in both the Time Trial and Road Race events. Toni Mould delivered a brave performance in the Women’s T1 Time Trial, finishing the route in 00:53:35. In the C4 race, Reuben van Niekerk displayed his dominance when he won the 50km race against Attie Botha; while Botha claimed the TT title. Brandon Skews finished the C3 race ahead of Hennie Myburg and Christian Duvenage. The 60km H4 handcycle race saw Gysie van der Niet win his race against Barend Coetzee; this result was a carbon copy of the TT, where Van der Niet won by a margin of four minutes. Andries Scheepers finished the H5 class in 01:53:54, claiming the TT title as well. The ultra-competitive Masters’ categories brought about their own excitement as the non-elite age groups from 30 years to 70+ delivered some exhilarating racing. Sunday’s 122km road race for the 30-49 age categories saw Jack van Wyk claim gold against Adolph Krige in the Men 30-34 class; Egon Campbell squeezed a victory against Jaco Cronje in the 35-39 race, Jaco Ferreira won a tight race in the 40-44 class, while Nic White secured his victory in the 45-49 age category against David Labuschagne. The 96km distance awaited the 50-59 categories, with Graeme Cronje getting his wheel across the line by a whisker against Andrew Westaway. Gary Beneke held the edge in the 55-59 race when he won against Jose Antunes. Charles Nienaber (60-64) and Noel Ziady (65-69) delivered top performances to earn gold medals in their races. Saturday’s racing was just as intense when the Women’s 30-49 age groups took to the streets to race the 106km distance. Linda Jooste won the 30-34 even;Lizle Rosenstein narrowly clinched the title in the 35-39 event, as Michelle Andrew settled for a silver medal and Lauren Coleman for bronze; Desray Foyn delivered a victory in the 40-44 race against Marisa Van Der Linde; while Linda Fouche beat Natalie Madies in the 45-49 contest. The Women’s 60+ category saw a sprint for the line after 50km of racing when Erna Du Toit edged out Hester De Klerk in second and Bets Koegelenberg in third. Sandra Brookstone won the 60km event in the 55-59 class; and Fiddy Gey Van Pittius commanded the 50-54. Earlier in the day, the Grand Master Men 70+ categories completed the 60km course – Octogenarians Michael Smith and Arthur Duncan kept the racing close in the 80+ category with Smith emerging the victor. Maurice Connor beat Jan Van Den Berg in the 75-79 class; while Willie Bauscher clinched the 70-74 title against Rudolf Jonker.

START YOUR DAY WITH A HEALTHY BREAKFAST SHAKE

How often do you skip breakfast or grab a coffee and pastry on-the-go to stop the hunger pains mid-morning? Once a week? Twice? Everyday? ‘Breakfast’ literally means to ‘break the fast’ that occurs overnight. After approximately 12 hours without fuel, it’s easy to see why it’s called the most important meal of the day – providing the energy your body needs to get you going in the morning. 7 Steps to start your day with a nutritious breakfast Step 1: Fuel your body with essential nutrients - Kick-start your day with much needed nutrients! As well as providing energy (calories), a healthy breakfast can give you the nutritional boost your body needs, including fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Step 2: Take control of your weight - Skipping or eating a breakfast that lacks essential nutrients can make you more likely to reach for unhealthy, high-calorie foods later on.* In fact, research shows that individuals who consume a good quality breakfast tend to have a healthier daily food pattern than those who don’t. Step 3: Build and maintain muscle - Protein contributes to the maintenance and growth in muscle mass, and our body relies on the protein in our diet to help us do this. Step 4: Healthy skin - Beautiful skin starts with nourishment from within. Drinking water and enjoying a healthy breakfast will feed your skin with essential nutrients. Step 5: Boost your metabolism - Eating a healthy morning meal and smaller portions more often throughout the day will help to balance your energy and enable your body to perform at its best.

Step 6: Power your brain - Improved mental performance, concentration and mood – three more reasons to enjoy a morning meal! Without breakfast, you may struggle to focus and are more likely to be irritable and tired. Step 7: Energy lift - Breakfast literally means to ‘break the fast’ and helps to top up the energy stores that your body has used overnight to repair and renew. Vitamins and minerals also contribute to the reduction of fatigue. Introducing the F1 Sport Shake The Formula 1 Sport is developed by experts in sports nutrition and has been specially formulated to aid athletes - a shake mix containing milk protein. Nutritionally balanced with carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, F1 Sport establishes a solid foundation to your daily diet while being easy to consume. The F1 Sports Shake is available only in Vanilla Cream Flavour Carbohydrate and can be taken before or after your workout. Key benefits for the F1 Sport shake contains the following: 18g of protein when made according to directions, both casein and whey protein Kilojoule-controlled, 915 kJ per serving when mixed with 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk, unique protein-carbohydrate blend with fibre and essential vitamins and minerals, vitamins C, E and selenium.

7 reasons to get an EU passport Having dual citizenship is something that many South Africans want to acquire. The primary reason is to assure their and their family’s future offshore, by protecting against political risk and economical instability. An EU passport is the most sought after travel document because it gives that individual the unique opportunity to enjoy unlimited access to the whole of the EU & the UK – meaning you have the right to live, work and travel to all European countries. Cyprus, an ex-British colony, full EU member and not part of Greece, currently has the most attractive 2nd passport plan on offer: citizenship is granted in 6 month’s via Cyprus’ ‘Citizenship through Investment’ programme. The programme is an investment in real estate; and with Cyprus’ positive property growth, demand for long and short-term tenants, this offers a very attractive investment for the short, medium and long term.

Here are the 7 reasons why South Africans desire Cypriot citizenship: 1. Visa-free travel to more than 169 countries. 2. The programme includes all dependent children up to age 28. Your adult children will have the ultimate access-key to travel, live and work anywhere in the world’s largest economy: in Europe. 3. You are investing – not donating – your wealth! After 3 years you can sell the entire property investment as long as you retain a single property valued at min €500,000. 4. Citizenship is passed on by descent offering a real and valuable legacy to future generations. 5. You can rent the property out to earn an attractive Euro-based income. Some properties are zero-VAT rated and some come with a rental guarantee for long-term leases.

An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime.

6. No need to ever live / stay in Cyprus.

In Cyprus investing in the “Citizenship through Investment” programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your family for generations to come. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programme is still open?

7. No inheritance tax: on your death you can dispose of your assets to your loved ones without having to pay the Cypriot government any death duty This is very advantageous for legacy planning.

Cypriot Realty is a pioneer in actively and consistently promoting property opportunities primarily in Cyprus. They have successful been doing this from their Cape Town and Sandton offices since 2008.

Protect yourself, your family and your assets from unpredicted events by taking advantage of the opportunity to secure Cypriot citizenship before the programme closes: it is open for a very limited time. Think of getting dual citizenship as guaranteeing your family’s future.

As a result, the company is recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialist for promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring permanent residency/citizenship, property investment, immigration/ retirement and starting a European-based business.

GENERAL

TWO SPORTS TRUST DEVELOPMENT CYCLISTS GO PRO The commitment and dedication of two road cyclists from Khayelitsha has earned them places in the recently announced Kinetic Pro Cycling team of eight cyclists. They are Vuyo Mavuya and Vuyolwethu Nkomo from The Sports Trust Development Cycling Programme. Kinetic Pro Cycling provides the opportunity for aspiring young cyclists, mainly from historically disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa, to race professionally at the highest levels in South Africa and internationally. Nkomo, a matric learner at Matthew Goniwe Memorial High School in Khayelitsha, started cycling in 2014 and finished fourth in the U19 time trials at the SA National Road Championships in Oudtshoorn in 2018. He was recently awarded his Western Province cycling colours. Mavuya started cycling in 2016 when he was still a learner at the same school. He has since been focusing on his cycling and helping to manage the development cycling team at Matthew Goniwe. Mavuya is currently the captain of The Sports Trust cycling team. In his first race as a member of the Kinetic Pro Cycling team, Mavuya won King of the Mountain on the 9 February 2019 at the 102km WeBenefit 99er in Durbanville. He came in fourth overall at 2:29:09, just behind pro cyclist Clint Hendricks. “Cycling has given me the space to show my talent,” says Mavuya. “Being part of the elite development cycling, or the ‘DC’ squad, has been a major stepping stone towards realising the dream of one day riding professionally – of riding in the big stages with the big guys and showing them what I am made of.” “It’s all starting to happen now. I love this sport.” Nkomo says: “I was motivated to start cycling at my school in 2014 after watching cycling races on TV.” Now that I have been selected for the Kinetic Pro Cycling team, I tell myself that nothing can stop me. I love cycling and I am also doing well at school. I train hard every day and then I do my homework. When I finish school, I want to continue with my studies and professional cycling.”

They are going pro at precisely the right time. Cycling has grown rapidly as a sport worldwide and it is widely broadcast on TV, with the associated opportunities and sponsorships. There are incredible South African role models in the sport, such as Nick Dlamini, who has reached the highest level of road racing in the world. He, too, is from a disadvantaged community (Capricorn Park in Cape Town) and is a great inspiration to Mavuya and Nkomo. Dlamini regularly trains with them and shares valuable training tips and motivation. Their Kinetic Pro Cycling Team Manager and Coach is Glen Bonthuys, who also was the Team Manager of the South African endurance track team that raced in Rwanda in 2016, and Assistant Manager of the South African road team in the Tour de Rwanda in 2014. He has a long list of achievement highlights to his name. Their High-performance Advisor is Barry Austin, a former National Road Cycling Manager, who has coached and managed multiple national champions since 2003. His sights are set on helping young cyclists become leading players in the international cycling arena, and he has an extensive international athlete placement network in Europe. The goal is to focus on the national racing calendar this year and then register the Kinetic Pro Cycling team as a continental team to race at international level in 2020.

STINKY, SWEATY SPORTS KIT GIVE IT THE SPORTSPONG TREATMENT Sannitree is a diversified international company based in Cape Town offering its customers a wide variety of microbial based products including SportsPong Pre-Wash Soak specifically formulated to remove sweaty odours, and is 100% natural, organic and biodegradable. We all have problems with smelly sports kit, be it gym clothes, running kit, running shoes, cycling kit cycling shoes, wetsuits, ladies sports bras, boxing gloves, yoga and stretching mats, to name a few. Sannitree International began in South Africa in 1981 when Mike Mayne initiated the idea of providing economical sewage treatment in rural areas, farms and settlement camps. Together with Dr DG Celliers, one of the world’s most respected enzymologists, they began testing, analysing and marketing their very first microbial based product, Sannitree Bio-Enzymes. Mike was then joined by Gordon Bruce and Brian Goodman. Sometime back the team at Sannitree were approached by a keen mountain bike enthusiast who was looking for a way to remove the bad sweat malodour emanating from Spandex/Lycra garments - even after washing machine treatment. “Our mountain biker, Nick Stevenson began testing our product extensively with a huge success. The tests included both male and female participants in a variety of sports, all with success. Simultaneously we began researching Spandex/Lycra with a view to establishing why SportsPong worked so successfully.” Sannitree’s findings are as follows: “Originally Latex was used to give sports wear a tight fit. In 1958 Joseph Shivers of Dupont University in the USA invented Spandex (an acromyn of expand). The product is man-made mainly from polyurethane polymer. In many parts of the world the product carries the name Lycra (origin unknown). The advantages of this product over other materials is massive. In 1980 Madonna at the peak of her career started wearing Lycra as casual clothing and its popularity grew. Today Lycra is extensively used in the non- iron garments,” says Brian. SportsPong Pre-Wash Soak - An answer to you smelly sports kit The bacteria “micrococcus” found on human skin, dust, grass, and plants absorb the human sweat and transform the compounds into an even worse malodour than the original sweat - they love the lycra habitat. They do not need much moisture to survive. Introducing “micrococcus” to fabric softner is like taking them to a feast. After the garment is used the first odour bearing bacteria will survive the washing machine cycle, smelling sweetly of fabric softner. Only until the next use when friction and body heat takes place, the foul smell with interest will be back. The University of Ghent in Belgium have done exhaustive tests on the cause of the sweat malodour. They used 26 cyclists in a series of spinning sessions and analysed the bacteria types found in the participant’s sweat. They had very limited short term success with a maximum of 3 months before the smell returned . Some manufacturers advise not to use fabric softners as they can be detrimental to the material causing it to lose its shine and its expandability and increase the sweaty, stinky smell. The Ghent university’s conclusion to the problem was to use was something more organic that can supplant the bad bugs with good ones. The only way to remove “micrococcus” is to introduce bacteria and enzymes that will supplant the odour-causing bacteria, thus removing the source of the smell and that's where SportsPong fits in.

ROLA MOTOR GROUP IN PARTNERSHIP WITH QHUBEKA The Rola Motor Group does not only share a passion for cars, but also for cycling and lifestyle. As a leading motor group based in the Western Cape, Rola embraces mobility and endorses a healthy lifestyle. Advocating these values have become a community drive for the Rola group and therefore the decision to enter into a partnership with the Qhubeka community initiative in 2019, came quite naturally.

Rola Motor Group CEO, Marius Claassen will take on this gruelling race with team mate Jampie Vlok. They will race a distance of around 700km and will be climbing a total of 15 000m. All this through iconic fynbos valleys, ravines, indigenous forests, vineyards, majestic mountains and spectacular coastlines.

The aim is to provide bicycles to school communities, over a 3-year period in order to improve mobility. For every bicycle that Rola donates, Qhubeka will donate another. This will enable the Rola Motor Group to jointly give away 700 bicycles over a 3-year period. The Rola Motor Group is excited about the Absa Cape Epic 2019, for good reason! “As a proud partner of the Qhubeka initiative, we will be donating 80 bicycles over 8 days, coinciding with the Absa Cape Epic this year.” Rola’s first 50 bicycles will be delivered to the Greenberg Secondary School in Grabouw and a second delivery of 30 bicycles will be in conjunction with Grabouw Beautiful Organization. Qhubeka will thus also donate 80 bicycles, which means 160 bicycles will be made available to the communities in the Grabouw area. The 16th edition of the Absa Cape Epic is taking place from 17 to 24 March 2019. This 8-day event will take riders through the Western Cape and this year also through the scenic Helderberg basin, where many of Rola’s dealerships are situated.

Photo: Rola Volkswagen Lifestyle ambassador, Ariane Lüthi is geared for the cycling season with her bold VW Caddy from Rola Volkswagen.

The ladies category will be full of excitement for Rola Motor Group as Rola Volkswagen Brand Ambassador and Kross Racing Team rider, Ariane Lüthi will team up with 2 x Olympic silver medallist, Maja Wloszczowska for the Absa Cape Epic this year. Mariske Strauss from Team Silverback Fairtree will also be taking part in a battle for the 2019 Absa Cape Epic title, together with Swedish rider, Jennie Stenerhag. Mariske has a close affiliation with Volvo and Silverback, which shows her shared passion for motorcars, cycling and lifestyle.

Photo: Mariske Strauss received a surprise on Valentine’s Day! A brand new Volvo XC60. Here she is seen flanked by Marthinus Kruger, Sales Portfolio Manager Silverback (left) and Marius Claassen, CEO of Rola Motor Group (right). Rola Volvo Cars Somerset West had the honor to present her new wheels to her in the scenic Helderberg Mountains.

The Rola Motor Group is excited to support and watch close competitive cycling, promoting the healthy active lifestyle and most importantly synergising with Qhubeka by giving back to communities in aim to provide education through mobility. Bicycles change lives and passion moves us beyond ourselves, beyond our shortcomings, and beyond our failures. #RolaLifestyle Visit www.rolacars.co.za
