The Knysna Cycle Tour will take place in the scenic Garden Route town of Knysna over the weekend of 22 - 23 June 2019 and is one of the iconic sporting events of the Knysna Oyster Festival - now running for over 30 years. Andrew Finn, marketing director for the Knysna Cycle Tour, said that the 2019 event will provide an exciting weekend of cycling for the whole family. “The main events - the MTB Races, the Road Races and the SPUR Children’s fun ride - will be back to thrill and challenge the thousands of participants who flock to Knysna every year for the tour,” said Finn.

The 80km and 50km MTB events and the 104km Road Race are official premier seeding events of the 2020 Cape Town Cycle Tour. “This year we’ve relooked at our routes and made some exciting changes, particularly to the longer road race for elites and experienced roadies. This 104km route is much more scenic now with the inclusion of Buffalo Bay and a section of the historic Seven Passes road between Barrington and Karatara, which is a 2,1km stretch of gravel road.”

GRANT LOTTERING TO ATTEMPT MOST BRUTAL SOLO FUNDRAISING RIDE EVER IN SOUTH AFRICA

Photo: Grant Lottering Im’possible Tour 2018 - Photo Credit: Sebastien Rodriguez

Grant Lottering, accomplished ultra-endurance road cyclist and Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, is bringing his legendary Im’possible Tour to South Africa for the very first time. In May 2019, Lottering will attempt to ride 1 340km through the Cape, climbing 17 mountains – almost 16 000m – in a non-stop single ride. He aims to finish this unforgiving journey in under 96 hours, making it the most extreme solo fundraising ride ever undertaken in South Africa.

They reported that the injuries were serious and would require surgery. Willie was sedated most of the time due to pain, yet, during this time never lost his fighting spirit. During his hospitalization Willie celebrated his 76th birthday. After twenty-two days in hospital he was happy to hear that the surgery was successful. “My Dad has an extremely strong mind, if he has it set walking or even cycling again one day, he will pull through. They caught him walking down the hospital corridor with his broken back and neck during his first night in hospital. He is just so strong and could manage to push through all that pain and walk. Many doctors and nurses told me how strong my Dad is for his age and we are grateful for his strength and good health,” Liezle continues.

“He is an amazing father and huge inspiration. His courage, faith in God, strong-will, and nerves of steel are four traits that shined through during the 22 agonising days in hospital. I learned he has many loyal friends and supporters from his lifetime who cared, prayed and helped our family during this time.”

ISSUE #29

“We set out to have a fun day on our bikes which turned into a traumatic event. I have done many races and training rides with my Dad and would never have imagined that I would ever see him in such a bad state,” Liesle explains. Willie fell hard on his head, but suffered no further brain damage. His medical history involves a serious head injury from a previous cycling accident many years ago. Prof Robert Dunn, Dr Nicholas Kruger and the Spinal Injury team confirmed that Willie had compression fractures in his back and neck, but luckily his spinal cord was not damaged which ruled out paralysis.

On 1 April Willie was discharged from the hospital and returned to George where he is regaining his strength day by day.

Deadline 12th each month

Willie Marx, track cycling legend from George started his 20th Cape Town Cycle this year riding the race with his daughter Liesle Marx, when an accident occurred about 20km from the start. Two women collided and caused a bunch crash involving about nine riders. Liesle, who was just a few meters ahead of him, heard the crash, turned around and witnessed her father being in much pain and remained by his side whilst waiting for an ambulance. After the paramedics arrived, Willie was transported to Constantiaberg Mediclinic, and after CT scans, transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital.

Lottering’s vision with his Im’possible Tour is simple – to inspire, to challenge, and to be relevant – which is exactly what he has done in the five Im’possible Tours since his near-fatal cycling accident in July 2013 in Italy. In 2016, Lottering cycled 962km non-stop in only 46 hours, climbing 20 of the most merciless Alpine mountains in all of cycling folklore for his third Im’possible Tour.

“As a member of the cycling community and, if I had to give advice to anyone entering the CTCT, always enter smaller cycling events and ensure you are comfortable riding in bunches and can ride downhill with ease.”“The lady who caused the accident was very nervous and going extremely slow downhill in the middle of Constantia Drive. She looked terrified after the crash which involved about 9 people who were getting up from the high-speed collision. It was a rookie mistake and accidents happen,” Liesle concludes. Background: Willie, at the age of 16, was the youngest track cyclist in South Africa to achieve Springbok colours. He was headhunted for the Dutch Amstel Beer team at the age of 18 and was one of the first South Africans to receive an international contract. In the same year he came third in the World Championships in Holland and decided to stay and compete internationally. Three years after cycling the world on fire, he returned to South Africa to pursue a career in electronics.

At the age of 19 Corné Bence, currently President of Eden Cycling and Junior Springbok track cyclist was privileged to cycle with Willie as Madison partners and won several titles. “Back in those days in the Eastern Cape, the spectators came to track events just to see the likes of Willie Marx. Willie was a phenomenal cyclist. He was regarded as the Gentleman of SA Track Cycling, and was very popular amongst the cyclists,” Corné said. In 1990 at the age of 47 Willie was severely hurt while racing in Port Elizabeth on the track and underwent brain surgery, he was on a ventilator and in a coma for 7 days and had 3 emergency operations. After his accident Martin Nefdt, who rode with Willie for years said that Willie was the greatest cyclist he ever rode against, and that he was a great inspiration. After a year Willie was back on the bike. Willie won the South African national track championships no less than seven times, five times consecutively and represented South Africa nine times: Holland (1962), World Championships in Liege, Switzerland, Paris, and England (1964), Japan and Bocholt and West Germany (1967). Willie raced against the late Olympic Champion and Tour de France green jersey winner, Patrick Sercu from Belgium. In 1967, as a 26-year old he became the first South African to qualify for World Track Championships in Amsterdam finishing in 8th place. Willie competed in Australia in 1969 and cycled the SA Tandem Championships with Martin Neftd in 1967/7. At the age of 60, Willie competed in the Master World Track Championships in Manchester, England where he won bronze in the sprint final in 2003.

EXCITING ROUTE CHANGES TO KNYSNA CYCLE TOUR

(CONTINUE FROM PAGE 1)

With a total ascent of 1,351m and a maximum elevation of 239m, the 104km road race route will also be more challenging than ever. The route will take riders on a thrilling, scenic adventure through one of the most picturesque sections of the Garden Route, revealing stunning views of ocean and beach, mountains and pristine forest along the way. The 50km road race will follow the same route as previous years, from Knysna to Sedgefield and back along the N2. There are also some changes to the MTB events which consist of two premier races – the 80km race for elite riders and the 50km event for experienced MTB cyclists – and two family events - the 30km and 15km rides. This year, the 80km, 30km and 15km events have been reinvigorated with changes to the routes and new challenges. The route for the 15km race, which was introduced in 2017, will remain the same. This race is for children under 16 and their families.

“These races are set to become iconic, bucket-list events on the national cycling calendar.” Another first this year is the new venue for Registration on Friday 21 June from 10:00 – 21:00 at the Thesen Harbour Town Parking Garage. Thesen Harbour Town is the bustling commercial centre of the Thesen Islands residential development with two boutique hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and a kiddies play area as beautiful indigenous forest display which will be created by SANParks. The start for all the races will still be on Waterfront Drive next to the Knysna High School Sports Field. The third event of the Cycle Tour weekend is the Children’s Fun Race on Sunday, 23 June for kids aged 10 and under. This popular race will take place on the Knysna High School sports field.

The other main sporting events that will take place during the Knysna Oyster Festival are the Harbour 2 Heads Lagoon ChalSays Finn: “We are very excited about lenge on 23 June, the FNB Family Forest Hike 24 - 26 June, and the Houtkapper Trail Run and the Knysna Forest Marathon our new routes. PLANNING FOR TOUR OF GOOD HOPE 2020 UNDER WAY South Africa’s premier road-race classic in the Cape Winelands, won by national U23 champion Marc Pritzen, proved another huge success, finishing with its traditional climb up to the Taal Monument just outside Paarl. This year the Tour of Good Hope enjoyed UCI status for the first time and ASG chief executive Erick Oosthuizen said they were confident in receiving positive feedback from the international body. “The UCI status definitely adds to the credibility of the event, but there are budget factors to look at. To be honest, it will be sponsor-dependent.We are very keen on it for 2020, but we are crunching the numbers to make sure we can do it,” Erick said. Oosthuizen felt the variety of stages this year made it “a nice edition, but admits that the first day was probably a bit short.” “The one venue [at Boland Landbouskool] makes it easier for most people to get to, but it also limits us a bit in terms of routes. We will take this into consideration when designing the new route for 2020.” Oosthuizen acknowledged that they faced a few challenges in setting up this year’s event. “I think it’s important to note the problems as well, and the major issues were the roadworks. This caused some late changes to the routes, but we are already trying to mitigate that by planning way ahead for the 2020 tour.” Photo: Tour of Good Hope - Photo Credit Louis Visser

The 2019 edition of the Tour of Good Hope may only have ended in March, but race organisers ASG Events are already putting plans in place for next year’s event from 2-6 March 2020. Entries for next year’s event are open and the same categories will be offered as this year, with team and solo options for amateur riders.

While introducing a team competition this year, he added that the solo categories remained an integral part of the overall offering. “We do believe that there is room for a team category, but we realised that there is huge interest in the solo side of the race in the amateur competition, so we again hope to host all the categories for 2020,” Erick concluded.

TIMELY WINELANDS

CELEBRATION FOR WOOLCOCK AND ROUX

UWE KOETTER

#RIDETHEHUNT CHALLENGE

Young Stellenbosch rider Hennie Roux gave himself the perfect birthday present when he partnered Waylon Woolcock to victory in the Liberty Winelands Encounter that took place from 12-14 April in the Cape Winelands. Roux turned 20 and celebrated in style with his first major stage race success when the three-day mountain-bike event ended at the Nederburg Wine Estate in Paarl. The pair won their third straight stage when they finished the 50km route with an overall time of 5:52:44.The final-stage runners-up were Renz Rezelman and Thor Hansen, followed by Cobus Swanepoel and Neville Cragg. The latter team were second in the general classification, with Dawid du Bruin and Michael Dundulakis filling third spot overall. For Woolcock, it was a return to familiar territory as he regained the title he won with HB Kruger in 2017 when he was still competing as a professional rider. He has since retired from pro cycling, but has taken Roux under his wing and was able to guide his young protégé through the demands of stage racing. Roux said it had been a memorable experience in his fledgling mountain-bike career, which only started in earnest in November. Having started cycling only four years ago, Roux switched to road racing in 2017. In 2018 he went riding in Europe and realised that he was more suited to mountain biking.

For some, it’s getting onto the bike for the first time. For others, it’s by taking on that extra hill. The irony though, is that while we train to better ourselves, invariably, we do so on the same routes.

“My strength is that I can ride at my own effort for a long time and since I started concentrating on this discipline I have fallen in love with it. So this weekend was very important for my development,” Roux said.

The Uwe Koetter #RidetheHunt Challenge is designed to contest that. To shift the boundaries we have set for ourselves - in terms of trails and thoughts. It has been designed to get us out there, and just that little further than we would have gone if it were up to us. The incentive? A luxury tented accommodation team entry to the 2019 FNB Wines2Whales.

The women’s team title went to Sunette Beyers and Alta Kriegler, while Andrew Marsh and Anneke Viljoen were crowned the mixed champions.

The reward? Exploration. Discovery. Moments captured in new places. The challenge is a virtual one (so there is no race day as such, but cycling is required). The #RidetheHunt Challenge starts in May 2019 and runs until September 2019. Challenges are explained on the Uwe Koetter website (uwekoetter.com/cycling), and work on a points system. The winner will be announced early October 2019 for participation in the FNB Wines2Whales Pinotage edition.

By coming third in today’s solo men’s category, De Villiers Odendaal was able to take the overall title, while Amy McDougall won her third stage to claim the women’s title.

SPUR SCHOOLS MTB LEAGUE HOSTS INAUGURAL #SPURFEST The Spur Schools MTB League hosted its inaugural #SpurFest on the banks of the Gariep Dam at the Forever Gariep Resort in the Free State from 28-31 March 2019. Signal Bikes was there to support grassroots cycling in its purest form. Central to the ethos of the 3-day #SpurFest is a focus on a range of inclusive events that aim to build a rider’s skill, fitness and most importantly, promote a healthy dose of fun on two wheels. Events ranged from the more fitness oriented hill climb and 35km marathon, to skill-based events like the ‘slow race’ and ‘bike polo’, while the exhilarating, fun-focused lake jump was most certainly a firm favourtie among the young (and older) riders in attendance. The Signal Time Trial Challenge took the form of a 700m jeep track climb that started on the bank of the Gariep Dam and topped out 150m higher atop a small koppie. The route started out steep and rocky, leading to a flatter section that featured a 90dg right turn with soft sand, which was followed by another steepening of the gradient towards the final push for the line. Despite Oli Munnik doing his best to set the fastest time, it was Dehan Smith from Affies, who emerged as the fastest on the day stopping the clock in time of 1min27s, earning the youngster a winning margin of 2s. This Widowmaker Challenge was tackled with fierce determination as riders tried their best to overcome gravity’s pull. Riders were allowed multiple attempts and the encouragement from fellow riders and parents standing on the hillside was awesome! The format of the Widowmaker Challenge is simple: from a standing start inside the Signal Bikes ‘start-house’, riders are challenged to pedal as high as they can up a rough, rutted and sandy incline that gets steeper and steeper the higher you get.

“It was great to see so many School riders attending training camps, participating in the SA Cup - Bloemfontein and the Spur Fest-Gariep Dam during the holidays as part of their preparation for the upcoming Schools MTB season that is upon us,” Annelize Ziehl-Owens, Chairperson of Western Cape Schools Cycling. Young mountain bikers in the Western Cape will saddle-up for the 2019 season of the Spur Schools MTB League on 9 June 2019 at Southey Vines Cycle Park in Somerset West.

ULTIMATE 3-DAY STAGE RACE IN THE OVERBERG

The 3rd edition of the Langeberg Link MTB will be held on 20-21-22 September 2019 on the Oudewerf Farm, Kliphoogte near Swellendam - the perfect weekend to share your riding experience with the family or friends. Set in the most beautiful farming landscape, with cycling routes through canola fields, in, up, and through the Langeberg mountains overlooking the Overberg as far as the eye can see, with Bonnievale in the west, and Swellendam in the east, makes this an event, one not to be missed.

The Langeberg Link MTB route has never before been cycled on by any race before 2017, and will once again take place on the same route, situated mostly on private land, not open to the public – thus ensuring the uniqueness of the event. The route, where access is limited, is purposely designed that cyclists can enjoy the overwhelming beauty of fauna and flora in the area and experience some breathtaking views of waterfalls. The race is open to all mountain bike enthusiasts. Riders can choose between a long route, or a short route and the event also offers solo entries in all three days, or single days. The 3-day route include a night race, some gravel travel and a hill challenge. Day 1 will see an all new ‘night race’ with a 4km lap route on the farm, starting at 19h00 where riders will be able to finish as many laps as possible within an hour. Riders will have to enter and exit the barn on completion of each lap in order for timing to be done correctly. The second day is a fairly ‘relaxed’ ride and does include some ‘gravel travel’. The 52km, 900m ascent takes the riders mainly on undulating gravel roads, with some off-road sections alongside the ripening wheat. The third day will take riders into the Langeberg Mountain and will be more challenging, The 28km, 520m ascent will test your legs along the side of the mountain and across more farm land with scenery that will reward your effort.

PAGE 6

Although Day 3 will be somewhat shorter than Day 2, it will be over terrain never before utilized by mountain bikers. Hill Challenge: The ‘challenging hill’ will be awaiting the riders on Day 3. Besides a ‘king and queen of the mountain’ award, there will be a prize for the first person to cycle to the top, otherwise the prize will have to go to the cyclist who manages to cycle furthest up that hill! The cost for all 3 days will be R1 400 per cyclist, R500 per day for single days, while the cost for kids under 10 will be R50 per day. Clarens is situated in the Eastern Free State Highlands, on the northern-most point of Lesotho. It is known for the spectacular sandstone mountains and wonderful climate and is regarded as one of the most picturesque areas in the country. The Elite race will comprise teams of six riders and three support crew. Pro Continental Teams, National Teams and local regional/professional teams will be invited to participate in the tour. The interest in the tour has grown with over 24 teams expressing interest to participate. These teams span four continents, representing 14 countries. Teams will race for General Classification, Sprinters jersey, King of the Mountain jersey, Best Young Rider and Most Aggressive Rider, as well as Overall Team Classification.

Barzani Pro Cycling, winners of the Double90 last year were back to defend their title and merged with TEG Procycling team to better their chances of taking the title. Team TEG/ BARZANI only started with 10 members, instead of 12, as there were complaints that they had too many UCI Pro Continental riders. The three TEG riders that formed part of the team was Louis Visser, Jacon Oosthuizen and Brandon Downes. The team lost two strong riders in the first 60km and at the halfway mark they had 8 riders left, averaging a speed of 46 km/h. At Golden Gate only 6 riders was left. Fifteen kilometres before the finish-line Dusty Day suffered two punctures, but the team managed to win the title. Carla Oberholzer and Catherine Colyn, formed part of the Cape Cycle Tours team who set a new course record for mixed teams. With the help of the teams, the PPA managed to donate 20 Bike4All bicycles to the CCIA (Combined Churches in Action), an NPO based in Clarens. These bicycles will be used to teach the children how to ride and as a means of transport.

MAKE CYCLING SAFE AGAIN - GET NETSTAR CYCLESAFE FOR PEACE OF MIND!

“Netstar’s legendary tracking and recovery service is now available for your bicycle. Whether you simply need recovery in the event of a theft, or want comprehensive bicycle tracking, we’ve got an option for you.” The Netstar CycleSafe project follows the vehicle tracking model, with Netstar able to track stolen and/or hi-jacked cycles nationally with its impressive armed ground forces, a fleet of road vehicles and helicopters. The installed cycle tracking device, developed by two Netstar electronic engineers and a PhD CycleSense electronic engineer (with assistance of Stellenbosch Engineering Faculty) took 3 years to complete. The device weighs 80 grams with a 3 year battery life. “We stay ahead, identifying different installation locations for cycles, developing devices to match.” “Our aim is to protect cycling in South Africa. Besides tracking stolen cycles, culprits will be arrested. We know, at this stage that cycle thieves are mostly amateur individuals and or small groups, not related to a syndicate. Cycle theft syndicates are still limited currently, having the potential to escalate rapidly, if not stopped. Escalating cycle insurance premiums and Netstar cycle subscriptions will be reduced as participation grows.”

CYCLING’S CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

Recent announcements by some cycling events to reduce the racing age categories has not been on the advice or the recommendations of Cycling South Africa. The decisions are taken by the event organisers themselves, based on the economies of scale.

Many large events have discovered that costs associated with event administration and organisational aspects have skyrocketed and have thus had to look at the sustainability of their events in both the short term and long term. Cycling SA has suggested the use of alternate service providers, where costing is known to be cheaper. “Cycling SA is developing cost-effective solutions to reduce administration costs to events, and we are in the process of testing this new technology.” The new technology and processes are designed to keep entry fees static and to promote regular participation. The first phase of this process is Cycling SA’s mobile app and online entry system, which is available to all sanctioned events at a very low cost when compared to similar related systems. Age category racing is a very important element in our community, and it is how an event is structured that can play an important role in continuing this aspect of our cycling environment. “As a national federation, we need to continually explore cost-effective solutions to encourage events to continue to support our veteran and master’s riders, without deriding the competitive environment for providing solutions to events.”

Recently, much has been said about the Tsogo Sun Amashova’s decision to remove the age categories. This decision was one that was not taken lightly by the event organisation as they have looked at every aspect to keep the event as a premier event in South Africa and also as KwaZulu-Natal’s biggest event. Cycling SA and KZN Cycling’s only involvement and recommendations have been around the Elite Men’s race (160km) and the Elite Women’s race (106Km) which will provide our Elite women with a clear road to race.

COIMBRA CYCLE HOUSE CELEBRATES A NEW LOOK On Thursday, 28 February 2019 the George cycling community gathered at Coimbra Cycle House, in York Street, George to celebrate the relaunch of the store after a major facelift. The store first opened its doors in September 2001, and in the hands of owner Vickus Boshoff has grown steadily over the years. As an active and diverse cyclist, Vickus has built a strong community around the store and gained loyal customers by offering personal and friendly service, sound advice founded on experience, as well as a world-class workshop. The store space has been completely opened up to create a welcoming shopping environment for customers. In addition there is a Body Geometry fit room, equipped with Retul, the best fit tools in the business to make sure you are perfectly set up on your bike. Most importantly, the spacious workshop is perfectly laid out to give your bicycle the care it deserves. The launch was attended by over 120 customers and friends of the store including four times World Champion and five times Absa Cape Epic winner Christoph Sauser, as well as multiple Olympic medallist and two times World Champion Sabine Spitz, current and four-time South African marathon champion Robyn De Groot. A testament to the strong community that has developed around the store over the years. George lies nestled in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains, in the Garden Route: the green heartland of coastal tourism in the Western Cape. The region is renowned for the mountain biking on offer with the Witfontein and Saasveld forest trails on the doorstep, and the Garden Route Trail Park just a forty-minute drive away.

More recently the endless network of gravel roads in the area and the rise in popularity of gravel bikes has attracted several gravel events to the area and seen increased interest in gravel riding from locals and visitors alike. Coimbra Cycle House is perfectly positioned to assist tourists embarking on cycling adventures through the garden route, riders participating in the multi-day stage races that pass through the area, and the ever-growing community of cyclists living in and around George. If you are passing through the area pop in for a coffee and a chat with Vickus and his friendly team.

SOME LIFESTYLE ATTRACTIONS THAT CYPRUS OFFERS ARE: - No language barrier being English-speaking; - Voted the safest country in the world for a population < 5Million; and 5th overall; - Euro-accredited education gives your children an advantage when they enter the global job market; - Low cost but high standard of living; - Europe on your doorstep; - 1st world medical facilities & affordable healthcare with highly qualified doctors & specialists. Cyprus’ property prices are very affordable; but the choice of where to buy is very personal and the type of property depends on your lifestyle requirements, budget and long term plans. MTB EVENT

THE GREYT ESCAPE - BOUTIQUE-STYLE EVENT IN THE OVERBERG Greyton, one of the Western Cape’s best-loved mountain-biking meccas, sees the return of The Greyt Escape; a three-day mountain bike stage race from the 15th to the 17th of June 2019. The event showcases the incredible trails on offer in the Riviersonderend Moutains and provides the perfect excuse for a long weekend away in the picturesque country village. The quaint country village of Greyton with its old-style, warm hospitality brings to the discerning mountain biker terrain that challenges, rewards, and finally releases the rider to reminisce about an experience that won’t be forgotten. Race Director, Anneke Viljoen, says the 2019 event holds true to the promise of a boutique-style event as in previous years, where riders, together with their friends and families, can bask in the weekend’s entertainment. For the avid mountain-biker, there are some new and interesting single track additions to the existing route, and The Greyt Escape Trail Run is also back due to popular demand, this time round with two distances to choose from – 6km or 12km. Details can be found on www.thegreytescape.co.za/the-greyt-escape-trail-run/

Pines; through the Oak Glade up to the top dam and then right up to Point High. From here it is one-way down through the Nguni singles, Piet’s contour and then down the Casey. The Oaks welcome you with their fantastic hospitality with a feature water and spectator point where you can stop and tell Gert what you think of his trails. Replenish before you head off across the river to visit Kootjie and Isa at Oewerzicht. Kootjie is strong and not afraid of short, sharp kickers so keep something in the legs for the last section of trails from where you can look back at the foothills that you would have played in earlier that day. A flat finish with the Greyton mountains in front of you will give you time to focus on the beer waiting at the finish line! Well, almost flat. First up Real & Simple and down a very nicely tweaked, or deboned, Boneshaker, a sweet sweeping downhill to the village that should put a smile on your face. Enjoy every moment! Stage 3: 45km Short, sharp, and fun! This stage is an action-packed selection of the close-tohome Greyton trails. If you can climb, and know how to descend, there is still time to climb a position or two on the GC.

The Greyt Escape Route Stage 1: 62km The longest but arguably easiest stage gets you warmed up and into the swing of things right from the start. If you’re roadie, be sure to secure a proper lead on Stage 1 as things get more technical as the weekend progresses! The start spits you out onto fast-rolling farm roads with a gradual climb leading you onto a contour through farmlands with stunning vistas of the Riviersonderend mountains. Look carefully and you might even spot the infamous UFO climb! A fun stretch of undulating hills on farm roads takes you to WP1 from where you can now admire the awaiting UFO climb.

Maermanskloof (maybe called that because the thin guy has the advantage on this climb!) is the first climb of the day. From the saddle you can see your challenge across the valley. First head down the latest addition to Greyton’s network – Real and Simple, and the Old Potter’s trail. Some really special hand-crafted trails that will hopefully lure you back to Greyton for more! It's then across the valley through the Forest trails before you hit the Bakenskop switchback climb. Pause at the top, take a quick pic of the breathtaking views, then a forever downhill, before refuelling at the only water point of the day. Catch your breath as you head along the district road and cross the river before making your way to Bereaville and Genadendal for Davey’s Sprocket and Rocky Horror, and your last double treat of the weekend down Luislang and R.I.P. Some fun, twisty singles that take you home, fast.

The fame is as much for the elevation that you gain, including a view of the sea, as for the stunning Middelplaas single track that now stretches all the way from the dizzy heights to the river below. After the fun (and most of the work), the route opens up again for some tucking in before our last singles bring you into the back of Greyton and home. Stage 2: 64km The more punchy route follows the spine of the old Greyton Classic route but cuts a bit of the distance to give you a killer compact day of fun – perfect mountain-biking pleasure! After a fast flat start, you’ll turn towards the mountain and into a steep double climb through the Blue Hippo. The next two drops are all through lush fynbos past the dam and through the teepee village; a beautiful section tucked right into the mountains. The next section is after a quick flat connection that brings you to the Hemelsbreed and Oaks singles – this is the feature of the day but keep something in the tank for the return journey. Up Castle Hill (maybe one day we’ll build a sweet bypass!); down the Oaks

SOUTH AFRICAN AMPUTEE BREAKS UNCHARTED TERRITORY AT 36ONE MTB CHALLENGE

A South African amputee is about to break uncharted territory in the world of mountain biking. Stephen Drew, a 60-year old rider from Knysna, had his world turned upside-down in 2016 when he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. With an undying passion for cycling, Drew was back on a bicycle in a studio less than five weeks later – before having even received his prothesis. Today he has not only learned to ride again, but is about to pave a new path in the world of prosthetics.Fully aware of the challenge in store, Drew will attempt to become the first South African cyclist with an above-the-knee amputation to an attempt a long-distance mountain bike race. Of all the events he could have chosen, he narrowed his gaze on the 36ONE MTB Challenge – a 361km mountain bike challenge in the Klein Karoo with a 36.1 hour time limit. The popular event described as the ‘Ultimate Race’ captures the hearts of adventure-seekers and tests the endurance of every man and his machine. “As far as my research goes, there are no above-knee amputees doing mountain bike races in this country and certainly none that have attempted this kind of distance. We are breaking uncharted territory!” said Drew. While pulling off an achievement of this kind could certainly come with its glory, Drew is concerned with much bigger things. He explained, “This race is not about finishing and being a hero, it’s about exploring the world of cycling as an above knee amputee. I have just been fitted with a left and right power meter, because it’s believed that you can only get 10 to 15% power out of the prosthetic side. We’re using this race to evaluate that and believe that we can improve. Ultimately my objective is to get other amputees on their bike - not necessarily to race but to be able to have a better quality of life.”

As a familiar face on South Africa’s mountain biking scene, Drew has an army of supporters behind him. Henco Rademeyer, director of Dryland Event Management, has watched Drew conquer mountain bike races for years - long before his accident. Privileged to have followed his journey, Rademeyer commented: “Stephen is a rider of great resilience, one that embodies everything that 36ONE is all about. It’s an absolute honour to have him attempt something of this magnitude at one of our events. With his truly admirable sense of grit and determination, we believe that he can achieve everything he sets his mind to!”

EXPERIENCE THE 2019 MEIRINGSPOORT MTB CHALLENGE

Meiringspoort MTB Challenge started out as a relatively small race 3 years ago and grew to one of the most popular MTB events in the Eden region, taking place on 25 May 2019 at De Rust in the Klein Karoo. A big part of the success of this event lies in the beautiful and unique routes which can only be ridden during the event. Eighty percent of the routes is over privately owned farms and consist out of Jeep Track, Single Track and some Gravel Roads. The 3 distances on offer are: 19.5km, 31km and 61.5km and gives every rider, no matter his/hers level of fitness, the opportunity to race at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain. In addition to the awesome MTB Race a Trail Run was added to the event with 9,5km and 20km distances to choose from. These trails are hand built on private land with the most unique landscape you can wish for. At the race village there will be a festive atmosphere with entertainment for the whole family, a mini basaar and an extraordinary steak on the Friday evening!
