“We are thrilled that Swellendam Municipality have agreed to road closures in town, which allows us to provide a fitting end to the Chas Everitt Around The Pot - Overberg 100Miler - Presented by SEESA,” Rudolf Botha of Petrichor Adventures enthused. “The final five kilometres now take riders through town, showcasing some of the historic Cape Dutch architecture of Swellendam and providing an easier run into the finish at the Swellendam Showgrounds.”

YOUNG RIDERS SHOWCASE THEIR FITNESS AND SKILLS

Photo: SRAM Western Cape XCO Round #4 & Western Cape XCO Championship - Photo Credit: Ewald Sadie | www.esphotography.co.za

The last round of the 2019 SRAM Western Cape XCO Series also doubled-up as the Western Cape Championship and racing took place at the spectacular Diamant Estate in Paarl on Saturday, 18 May 2019. Cool, dry weather welcomed the riders to the 5,2km of superbly prepared track, with approximately 170m of climbing per lap. The Sprogs and Nippers’ shorter lap was by no means easier, and the racing was intense in all categories. A group of Namibian riders participated in some of the categories and did well enough to influence the results at the top end of these categories, notably in the Sprog Boys and Sub Junior Boys categories.

The story of the day was the Junior Men’s race and the incredible performances by Luke Moir, Daniel van der Walt and Jamie Penfold. Starting 2 minutes behind the Elite Men, these 3 riders caught and passed the front Elite riders on the 3rd lap! Their lap times were consistently and substantially quicker than those in the front of the Elites. The race was fast and furious, and a showcase of their fitness and skills. As a matter of interest, the fastest lap in all the women’s categories was that of Andrea Schofmann in the Youth Women category. The sport surely has a great future with these kind of performances from these young riders.

At the foot of the mountains the finish-line awaits. As one approaches it the vegetation becomes greener, lusher, better nourished by the rain clouds which bank up against the high peaks above Swellendam. In previous years the final few kilometres have failed to live up to the splendour of the rest of the route. Not so in 2019, thanks to Swellendam Municipality.

The rolling gravel roads cut through the emerald green wheat fields and canary yellow Canola blooms. At the 100 kilometre mark the race crosses the Breede River on the country’s only remaining hand-drawn ferry. Before embarking on the Malgas Ferry riders will be able to refuel, enjoying a 45 minute neutral zone, on delicious roosterbrood – hot from the fire.

The final 60 kilometres return to rolling hills; which the locals know as die Rûens, for the hills’ appearance like a series of backs stretching off towards the Langeberg Mountains.

KEY STAGES TO LOOK OUT FOR IN THIS YEAR’S TOUR DE FRANCE This is the race’s fourth visit to the summit since 2012, but this time the Tour will go even higher: “The stage also races up a part that we had built up there so that the (publicity) caravan could turn around,” says Tour director Christian Prudhomme. “That’s an extra kilometre at an average gradient of 9.5%.” July 19 - Stage 13: Pau - Pau time-trial: As the only individual time-trial on the 2019 edition, this 27km loop around Pau is the specialists’ only chance to make their mark, while the weaker riders against the clock could be tempted to put too much into it. “It’s on rolling terrain with a seven percent gradient hill, not as tough as the one last year, though,” says race planner Thierry Gouvenou. July 20 - Stage 14: Tarbes - Tourmalet: The Tourmalet is the mountain most visited by the Tour de France and first featured in 1910. This year’s ascent is on a comparatively short stage of 117km. The final ascent to the summit finish is 19km long at an average of 7.4 percent and was the scene of a classic struggle in the fog in 2010 where Andy Schleck just edged Alberto Contador. July 21 - Stage 15: Limoux - Foix Prat d’Albis: The final Pyrenean stage will offer a sense of drama given it runs though the ancient ruins of Cathar strongholds and fascinating geological formations and hills so steep that tourists to the region are often seen pushing their cars. The Prat d’Albis, 11.8km at an average gradient of 6.9 %, is a leap into the unknown.

Running from Saturday, 6 July to Sunday, 28 July 2019, the 106th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,460 kilometres. The route will feature 7 mountain stages that include five mountaintop finishes; La Planche des Belles Filles (stage 6), Col du Tourmalet (stage 14), Foix Prat d’Albis (stage 15), Tignes (stage 19) and Val Thorens (stage 20). There are also only 54 kilometres of time trialling that are split between one team time trial and one individual time trial. The stage 13 individual time trial in Pau could mark changes between the contenders for the overall classification. Steep climbs, gravel and thin air will test the best in the Tour de France. Take a look at seven potentially key stages that could decide the yellow jersey winner of the 106th edition. July 11 - Stage 6: La Planche des Belles Filles: On this first summit finish it looks likely some gaps will start to appear in the peloton.

July 25 - Stage 18: Embrun - Valloire: With summits sitting at over 2000 metres in altitude, the great Alpine classics of Vars, Izoard and Galibier speak for themselves. This is the first time the Tour has visited all three mountain passes since 2011. The finish line comes after a very technical descent. July 26 - Stage 19: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne - Tignes: The peloton passes over the summit of the Col de L’Iseran, whose summit sits at an impressive 2770m altitude, at the 85km mark with 13km of climbing before a descent into a steep valley. The peloton will then swing past the Tignes dam and start a 7.5km climb before a final, flat kilometre rounds out the stage in the thin mountain air. July 27 - Stage 20: Albertville - Val Thorens: This stage is as difficult for its descents as it is for the final climb to the summit, over a whopping 33.4km at an average gradient of 5.5 percent. This is the final showdown before a flight to Paris for the 21st stage. It featured once before on the Tour, on a stage won by the Colombian Nelson Rodriguez.

CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR CONFIRMS PLANS FOR A SHORT ROUTE OPTION Cape Town Cycle Tour and the City of Cape Town have confirmed that they are finalising plans to offer a short route for next year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour. “We are extremely excited to be working in partnership with the City on this innovation,” said David Bellairs, director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. “Cape Town was voted as the World’s Leading Festival and Event Destination in 2018 at the World Travel Awards and the Cape Town Cycle Tour has largely contributed towards that reputation. Year after year, we attract 35 000 riders, from elite racers to novices, fitness enthusiasts, locals and internationals to those that want to tick this iconic event off their bucket-list.” “At the same time we realise that the 109km route may be a bit daunting for novices or the not-so-fit. We want to be completely inclusive; we want to encourage the youth to come and have a fun, crazy costume ride with us and to get armchair athletes onto bicycles to also enjoy the camaraderie of this incredible event.” “A shorter course, in addition to the full traditional route is the perfect solution. We will release more details as we confirm them, but the thinking is that the short route will be held on the Saturday, followed by the 109km route on the Sunday,” Bellairs concluded. Interestingly, exactly four years and three months ago, 35 000 participants lined up to ride a vastly shortened version of the beloved Cape Town Cycle Tour in sol-

idarity and support for those affected by the tragic fires burning on the mountains around Cape Town in March 2015. The route then was a 47km circular route from the start to the end of the M3 and back the same way to the finish in Green Point.

STEEPLE CX CUP BRINGS CYCLOCROSS TO SA It would not be a cyclocross race without a beer or two with one’s fellow riders after the racing is over. Steeple CX Cup Cyclocross invokes images of soggy Belgian fields, a muddy Mathieu van der Poel grinding inexorably away from Wout van Aert while thousands of cheering, beer drinking fans shout their encouragements. It looks part festival part bike race. South African cyclists have been missing out for too long on Europe and North America’s favourite winter bike sport. To remedy that the Steeple CX Cup was born. Founded with an invitational race in 2018, followed by a two round series, the Steeple CX Cup boasts a seven event series in 2019. The first race took place on 19 May at Klein Constantia Wine Estate, followed by the second and third round during June at Rondebosch Boys High. Thereafter the venues alternate between one of Cape Town’s most storied wine farms and schools with races on 21 July, 4 August, 18 August and the Grand Finale, at Klein Constantia, on 1 September. Would-be-competitors can enter one or multiple events and need five results to be in contention for the overall series title. For those unfamiliar with cyclocross, or CX, Louis Daffarn, co-founder of the Steeple CX Cup, explained: “It is an inclusive sport. All bikes, skill levels and riders are welcome. We have racing and social categories along with a great festival-like atmosphere created by the sponsors, RedBull, SRAM, Camelthorn Beers and Sir Fruit juices. The Racing event, often combing both genders, encourages riders to take part on cyclocross bikes and race on the roughly 2.5 kilometre long course, completing as many laps as possible in 50 minutes,” Daffarn elaborated.

“Thereafter the Social event for those looking for a little less intensity and allowing novices to make their first CX attempt allows for riders to take part on cyclocross or mountain bikes over a shorter time frame.” With a shortage of boggy fields in the Mother City the Steeple CX Cup makes use of two dedicated cyclocross courses for the 2019 season. Both the Klein Constantia and Rondebosch Boys routes provide a mixture of terrains to be conquered; including grass, gravel and asphalt.

SPUR SCHOOLS MTB LEAGUE RECORDS HIGHEST NUMBER YET “We are extremely proud of the record amount of Western Cape Schools that entered for the first Spur Schools MTB League event and as more and more Schools start to recognise cycling as official School Sport the numbers will grow even more,” says Annelize Ziehl-Owens, Chairperson Western Cape School Cycling Association. “Western Cape Schools Cycling, an affiliated member of South Africa Schools Cycling and associate member of Cycling South Africa, hosted a Team Managers as well as a School Coaching course, before the start of the season and the future of Schools Cycling is looking bright. We are committed and passionate about Schools Cycling and will continue to add value and support Schools to establish the sport. We wish all the Western Cape Schools best of luck with the rest of the season,” Annelize concludes.” Western Cape #2 of the Spur Schools MTB League will take place on 3 August in Durbanville and Western Cape #3 on 24 August in Wocester. The Southern Cape #1 is scheduled to start the season on 3 August in Knysna, followed by Southern Cape #2 on 17 August in Plettenberg Bay, and 24 August in George. On 8 June 2019, young mountain bike enthusiasts from the Western Cape hopped onto their saddles for the first Spur Schools MTB League event of the season to represent their various primary and high schools. The event was hosted at Southey Vines MTB Trail Park in Somerset West, which hit a record number of 850 entries - the highest number of entries ever at an Spur Schools MTB League event. A highlight of the day for most kids, was having the current U/23 World Champion Alan Hatherly at the event, mingling with the children, giving autographs and taking selfies with the kids. He is a great inspiration to all the young riders. The top three participating high schools were: Paul Roos Gymnasium (1); Parel Vallei High School (2) and Durbanville High School (3), and the top three participating primary schools: Van Riebeeckstrand Primary School (1); Kenridge Primary School (2), Paarl Boys Primary school (3).

TAKE ON THE HILL CHALLENGE AT LANGEBERG LINK MTB

The 3rd edition of the Langeberg Link MTB will be held on 20-21-22 September 2019 on the Oudewerf Farm, Kliphoogte near Swellendam. The Langeberg Link MTB route has never before been cycled on by any race before 2017. The race is open to all mountain bike enthusiasts. Riders can choose between a long route, or a short route and the event also offers solo entries in all three days, or single days. The 3-day route includes a night race, some gravel travel and a hill challenge. Day 1 will see an all new ‘night race’ with a 4km lap route on the farm. Riders will have to enter and exit the barn on completion of each lap in order for timing to be done correctly. The second day is a fairly ‘relaxed’ ride and does include some ‘gravel travel’. The 52km, 900m ascent takes the riders mainly on undulating gravel roads, with some off-road sections alongside the ripening wheat. The third day will take riders into the Langeberg Mountain and will be more challenging, The 28km, 520m ascent will test your legs along the side of the mountain and across more farm land with scenery that will reward your effort. Although Day 3 will be somewhat shorter than Day 2, it will be over terrain never before utilized by mountain bikers. Hill Challenge: The ‘challenging hill’ will be awaiting the riders on Day 3. Besides a ‘king and queen of the mountain’ award, there will be a prize for the first person to cycle to the top, otherwise the prize will have to go to the cyclist who manages to cycle furthest up that hill! The cost for all 3 days will be R1 400 per cyclist, R500 per day for single days, while the cost for kids under 10 will be R50 per day. WOOLWORTHS FUELS

CITY APPLAUDS EFFORTS

Ahead of the 2019 FNB Wines2Whales events the organisers are working tirelessly to ensure every rider starts, rides and finishes with #SeriousGEES. To that end, as anyone who has ridden a stage race knows, good food is essential. The first thing entrants can get excited about already is the fact that one of South Africa’s favourite food retailers, Woolworths, has come on board as the official food partner until 2022.

Foundation phase learners at the Constantia Primary School will be pedalling their way to safety with the completion of a new play area and cycle track.

FNB WINES2WHALES WITH #SERIOUSGEES

Riders will be able to start their day with a caffeine kick, thanks to the Woolworths coffee cart where some delicious options will be available for purchase, before making their way to breakfast. Everything the eleven-time entrants have come to know and love will be served, but with the Woolworths difference.

TO INCREASE CHILD ROAD SAFETY

The City of Cape Town’s Road Safety Education team will soon take foundation phase learners through their paces at the Constantia Primary School. The school boasts a brand new kindergarten play area, with a tricycle track and other road safety elements. Built in 1910, the school is home to nearly 400 learners. The play area, upgraded through sponsorships and donations secured by the Sporting Chance Foundation, was officially opened recently. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith attended the ribbon-cutting event on behalf of his Transport colleague, Alderman Felicity Purchase. The Cape Town Traffic Service’s Road Safety Education team will visit the school regularly to teach learners about road safety. Key messages will include: How to cross the road safely, What to do in a vehicle when you are a passenger, Safe areas to play, Safe areas to cross-roads, and what to wear when cycling. “The upgrade to the play area allows the children to have fun, while learning some very important life and safety lessons to boot. I think the tricycle tracks could be useful tools for learning on school playgrounds across the city, but also just a general focus on road safety. The road safety education officers within our Traffic Service conduct outreaches all year round, so any additional initiatives to improve children’s understanding of road safety are welcomed,” said Alderman Smith. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, children under the age of 18 are twice as likely to be killed on South African roads, compared to elsewhere in the world. Statistics compiled by the Road Traffic Management Corporation, show that

The Woolworths luxuries will continue on the bike at the water points, where more fruit and a sweet treat or five awaits, as well as potatoes and perhaps a portion of banana bread. After the stages on days 1 and 2, Woolworths will provide both a delicious lunch and dinner spread in collaboration with a caterer who will be using inspiring, quality ingredients. Previous entrants might notice refinements rather than radical changes but the real evidence of the nutritious meals will be the on-bike energy that wholesome food delivers to athletes of all levels. One area where Woolworths are keen to see fundamental changes though, is in the number of riders from historically disadvantaged communities taking part in mountain bike races. They have therefore committed to sponsoring five development teams to take part in the Exxaro competition within the Shiraz race, with a view to encourage greater participation. In 2018, when the Exxaro category was launched, the BMT Fairtree team of Baphelele Mbobo and Luyanda Thobigunya rode away with the title. It is the hope of both FNB Wines2Whales and Woolworths that with continued support the competitiveness of all the Exxaro Jersey teams can reach, or even exceed, the level set by Mbobo and Thobigunya. Woolworths’ Events and Sponsorship manager, Reinette Geldenhuis, is no stranger to the FNB Wines2Whales. In 2018 she took part in all three events, claiming one of the inaugural Jeroboam awards. “Woolworths is delighted to be partnering with the FNB Wines2Whales. Our participation is a way for us to give back to the riders who support us during their training as well as the rest of the year, and as such we will be supplying a variety of exciting new products for them to sample.” “Our water points, which will be located throughout the route, will offer a great selection of snacks and treats to keep riders energy up, and as we are known for our delicious coffee, this will be available in the village, throughout the event. We hope that our involvement will help showcase the quality, convenient solutions we are known for, and that support an active lifestyle. We are sure this partnership will add to what is bound to be a wonderful racing event,” the 6-time finisher confided.

PAGE 6

children (0 – 19) accounted for 21,2% of all pedestrian fatalities in 2017 and 16,3% of passenger fatalities. “We have a poor track record with road safety in South Africa, and children are most vulnerable. Education is an important aspect, but as adults, we should also model the way for children. Our enforcement statistics suggest a less than healthy attitude towards the rules of the road and safety in general, which is of grave concern as these attitudes and behaviours are passed down to children who witness the behaviour of their parents, caregivers or adults in general. Food for thought, indeed,” added Alderman Smith. The Area South Road Safety Education Team visits schools on a weekly basis, where qualified Traffic Officers present lectures on road safety matters. In the 2018/19 financial year, the team has: visited 128 schools and trained about 33 600 learners; visited 54 educare centres and trained around 2 430 learners; hosted 5 880 learners for road safety education and training at the junior traffic training centre at Hillstar Driving Licence Testing Centre; provided training to 84 scholar patrol teams; and conducted 4 521 oversight visits of scholar patrols.

MTB EVENT

e g n e l l Cha AIL RUN

MTB & TR

Angel de Lange Shaun Peters

On the 10th and 11th of August, Die Keldery in Vredendal is hosting the annual Namaqua Daisy Challenge. This event promises to be loads of excitement and fun. In addition to the 1-day races, they have a new challenge this year - the 2-day extreme events. These are MTB and trail running races that consists of three stages over days.

Like previous years runners or cyclists can take part in the 1-day races on 11th August. The trail run races consists of 15km and 27km routes. If you prefer mountain biking, register for the 15km (new route), 27km or 45km MTB routes. This year there will also be an e-bike category at the Daisy Challenge. At the finish line F&K craft beer will be awaiting all finishers.

The MTB Xtreme Challenge consists of three stages - the technical stage, a night ride, and lastly a gravel ride. The 55km technical stage kicks off with a cycle through the outskirts of Vredendal. Some singletrack, technical climbs and even a short rock garden adds excitement to this stage. Riders should remember to keep some gas in the tank for upcoming stages and enjoy the daisies in bloom. Next up is the 15km night ride. This stage will start shortly after sunset. Front and rear lights are compulsory.

The Daisy Challenge will be hosting a fun-filled and colorful Colour Fun Run & Ride. This event is always the highlight of the Namaqua Daisy Challenge and is perfect for children, less experienced runners and cyclists, or anyone who wants to have lots of fun.

Cyclists finish the 2-day challenge with a 95km gravel ride. Gravel bikes are more than welcome for stage 3. Riders will ride along the sea past Doringbaai and Strandfontein. Riders will travel via the Olifants River canal and farm roads towards Vredendal and to Die Keldery Restaurant. The race ends with a nice flat sprint, where after riders can enjoy a well deserved cold one and exchange “war” stories with fellow cyclists. The Xtreme Trail Run Challenge starts off with a 27km trail run. During stage one runners will do a one way route with a remote drop-off and run back to Die Keldery venue. The first 6km will be uphill, but with fresh legs this won’t pose a big problem. From here it’s a bit downhill and then onto the famous Olifants river canal. The next stage is an easy 5km night run that will allow runners to make up some time. The challenge ends with a 15km vineyard road towards the finish line where runners can rest and enjoy something cold to drink. There will be a R5 000 prize for the Xtreme MTB men and women overall winners and a R2 500 prize for the Xtreme Trail Run men & women overall winners.

After all the races, participants and their families will gather at Die Keldery for some festivities and celebration. Angel de Lange will be the guest performer on the 11th of August at Die Keldery and will provide entertainment for the day. The MC for the Namaqua Daisy Challenge is the quirky Shaun Peters. There will be food and drinks stalls to enjoy at Die Keldery Restaurant. Entertainment for kids include a clown, face painting and a jumping castle. For the adults all Namaqua's products will be available to enjoy. A portion of the proceeds will go towards youth development in the area. Make sure you don’t miss out on the MTB and trail run event of the year - the Namaqua Daisy Challenge. What makes this event so special is the beautiful region it takes place in, the wildflowers that runners and cyclists will see on their routes and the hospitality of the people in this area that will make you feel right at home. ROAD

THE CALL OF THE WILD BOAR: CAPE DUO CHALLENGE DAY TWO Stage one of the Cape Duo Challenge will be a slightly distant road-racing memory as the teams line their mountain bikes up for day two’s thrilling off-road challenge in the rugged mountains behind Wellington. On paper, it seems relatively tame; only 49km long, and while 1 200m ascent makes for a good day out, the route planners could have made it far grippier for the non-climbers. What they have managed to do is create a wonderfully varied route, that takes in some of Wellington’s most epic trails. A treat of a start – 10km on open gravel roads – will let the legs warm up somewhat after the previous day’s double-Bainskloof excesses, before a sharp left turn gives a preview of what is to come; a steep 2km/100m opener up a loose, rocky forested grind that pops out onto a steep track to the day’s King of the Mountains spot. Now, the real fun starts. Cherry-picked mostly from Wild Boar’s Porcupine Route, but interlinked with a host of secret trails that will only be ridden on Cape Duo day, expect to be wowed around each corner with a mix of bush tunnels, manicured and bermed descents, fynbos views for miles and rugged singletrack. There is no one single monster climb on the route, rather a collection of lung-busters, with descents that will rejuvenate, to a degree. Riders can expect to finish broken, but grinning. The Bosman Family Vineyards will be waiting to pamper and preen, readying riders for day three’s off-road/on-road double-header.

YOUNGSTERS SHOWING THEIR POTENTIAL AT YOUTH CYCLING FESTIVAL Young cyclists from the Cape Winelands, Cape Metropole, Eden and West Coast took part in the 9th edition of the Youth Cycling Festival that took place between 17-19 June 2019 in Oudtshoorn. This year the event was a day shorter to accommodate riders traveling to KwaZulu-Natal for the Youth Road Championships that took place from 22 - 23 June 2019. “The competition was on a high level with no rider being able to dominate without a fight. The Cape Metropole was able to dominate the road and criterium races. Eden put up a fight and won the Team Time trial and MTB events and was able to secure the overall win for the tournament and secured the trophy for the 3rd consecutive year. Eden was also able to secure the winning team being the Eden U/11 team as well as the best Male and Female rider of the tournament.”

DOUBLE TITLES FOR RIDERS AT SA YOUTH CHAMPS

There is always new stars showing their potential - this year Louis Venter and Anya du Plessis showed very good form and was respectively crowned as the best male and female cyclist of the tournament.

KNYSNA CYCLE TOUR WINNERS

KwaZulu-Natal’s Frances Janse van Rensburg and Gauteng’s Tiano da Silva both doubled up when they won the U19 girls and boys road races on the second day of the SA Youth Road Cycling Championships in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, 23 June 2019. For both, Sunday’s wins were their second national titles of the weekend after they won their respective girls and boys U19 time trials on Saturday. Janse van Rensburg and Da Silva were not the only riders to collect two gold medals over the weekend. Kita and Kyla Uys both completed a perfect weekend for the family Uys as they added the U15 and U13 girls’ road race titles to the equivalent time trial victories on Saturday. Other riders to double with road race and time trial wins were Camaron Wilcox (WesternCape) in the boys U11, Adriaan Van Zyl (Western Cape) in the boys U15 and Chante Olivier in the girls U17.

Cyclists participating in this year’s Knysna Cycle Tour were faced with windy conditions and a downpour just after the start at the first major sporting event of this year’s Knysna Oyster Festival. The event kicked off with four MTB races – 80km, 50km, 30km and 15km on Saturday, 22 June 2019. The 80km event was won by Gert Heyns, his second consecutive win in two years, second was Marco Joubert, followed by Robert Hobson in third. First home in the Elite women’s race was defending champion Robyn de Groot in a fast 3:47:48, with Hayley Preen more than 15 minutes behind her, and Courtney Webb placed third, was almost 10 minutes behind Preen. “I am so excited and overwhelmed on being a U11 SA Road & Time Trial Champion! It’s a dream come true to bring a trophy home. I would just like to say thank you to my parents for all their support,” says U11 boys Champ, Camaron Wilcox. Other podium winners from the Western Cape include: Time Trial (TT) : Ferdi Botha placed third (U11 Boys), Morgan Jones won gold (U13 Boys), Mina Van Der Walt placed second (U13 Girls), Jessie Munton won silver (U15 Girls TT and Road Race), Mienke Boshoff placed third (U15 Girls TT and Road Race) Sofia Friedrich placed third (U19 Womens). Road Race: Kean Dalton placed third (U11 Boys), Louis Venter placed 3rd (U15 Boys), and Zandre Gerber placed third (U17 Boys).

PAGE 10

Thousands of cyclists turned up at the start-line of the Knysna Cycle Tour road races on Sunday, despite chilly, wet conditions. First time winner of the Elite men’s 116 km race, 28-year-old Clint Hendricks (ProTouch) said it was a cold start but not too early and the race was “pretty aggressive” with lots of great riders and pro cycling teams supporting it. The race featured a new route this year with a total ascent of 1,351m and a 2,1km section of gravel on the Seven Passes Road. Hendricks beat Nolan Hoffman (Team Enza) and Rainhardt Marais (Alpha Bodyworks) who was a split second behind Hoffman. The winner of the Elite women’s race, Tiffany Keep said that this was her first Knysna Cycle Tour event, but she will definitely be back for more. She beat Lucy James and Helen Gebreyesus.

6 reasons to own a property in Cyprus

Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity! Owning an offshore property to realise a Plan B is a dream than many South Africans would love to achieve. However the choice of where to invest can be intimidating; plus the financial, legal and tax implications coupled with language & cultural difficulties sometimes makes this a barrier to entry.

Europe remains being the preferred geographic location for the majority of South Africans as not only is Europe the world’s largest trading block, but the opportunities are enticing. Cyprus, an English-speaking ex-British colony and full EU member, is an extremely popular destination in Europe for South Africans to invest. Here are the 6 reasons why South Africans are buying property in Cyprus: 1. You can acquire permanent residency or EU 2nd citizenship by buying property without having to live in the country. 2. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. 3. Cyprus’ positive property growth and demand for long and short-term tenants offers a very attractive investment for the short, medium and long term.

5. Cyprus has been voted one of the safest countries in the world so your personal safety and property investment is assured.

4. Cyprus is a very popular tourist destination so owning an investment property will reap an attractive offshore income.

6. The discovery and imminent exploration of natural gas is already having a positive impact on foreign investment and infrastructural development. Billions of Euros are already pouring into the economy. In Cyprus investing in either the “Citizenship through Investment” or the “Fast Track permanent residency” programmes will reap financial rewards and lifelong benefits for the family. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this while both programmes are still open in Cyprus. Investing overseas is a huge financial and emotional commitment, but your offshore journey can be made easier when you get advice from professionals. Always check exactly what you are buying before signing any contracts; and take your time – there will always be a good deal to be had. Going across on an inspection trip to personally view the property opportunities and to do the groundwork could save you thousands in the long run! Cypriot Realty arranges personalized property inspection trips for you to come to Cyprus to look at the property options and to experience for yourself the lifestyle on offer. From arranging property viewings, meeting with taxation and legal specialists, to opening up your offshore bank account – we hold your hand every step of the way. Contact us for a confidential meeting to discuss how we can help you realise your and you family’s Plan B in Europe.

THEO ERLANGSEN

GREG MINNAAR SECOND PLACE

WINS IXS DOWNHILL CUP

AT UCI DH WORLD CUP IN AUSTRIA

Two times South African Downhill Mountain Biking Champion Theo Erlangsen went straight into a win at the IXS Downhill Cup in Winterberg, Germany recently.

Favourable weather throughout the week remained for finals day at Round 3 of the Mercedes-Benz UCI DH World Cup in Leogang, Austria. With slippery dust from start to finish, a winning run would need precision riding, while really pushing the envelope on one of the fastest courses of the season.

Erlangsen from Cape Town and Slovakian Spela Horvat from the BeFly World Team were the riders that coped with the dry course conditions the best and ended up on top of the podium in the elite men’s and women’s races respectively. Theo came in with a time of 1:36.646, while Tristan Botteram from Holland came in second. The win, Erlangsen’s first ever international victory, puts his European campaign off to a very good start. The Downhill Cup venue was packed, and everywhere there were scenes of exciting competition. The weather was warm, and several thousand spectators provided a breathtaking atmosphere. Erlangsen put his head down and emerged victorious, after putting in the hard yards training in South Africa. “My European trip is off to a cracking start,” said a very happy Erlangsen after the win. Photo: Theo Erlangsen Photo credit: Racement / Sebastian Gruber

“A big thank you to all the people who made it possible. It felt so good to be racing European tracks again.”

“The Elite Men’s race with big names, like Laurie Greenland, Bernard Kerr and Loris Vergier finding themselves on the wrong side of the grip limits. Loïc Bruni, the reigning world champion hit the track with energy and accuracy, sliding just the right amount and bouncing between turns. The French rider hurtled down the hill in 3m 16.132s.” Fastest qualifier Greg Minnaar, 21 times a World Cup winner, was the only man left to try and better Bruni’s time. From start to finish the result could have gone either way, with Minnnaar just a fraction of a second slower at each split and gaining speed as he progressed through his run. Bruni was literally on the edge of his seat in the finish arena – Minnaar had been strong at the end of the track in qualifying. He crossed the finish line in second place, 0.3s behind Bruni.

PPS PANORAMA - WINNERS VAN DER BANK AND JANSE VAN RENSBURG The PPS Panorama Tour, South Africa’s “Toughest Race on Tar” - a race for cyclists in teams of two, took place in Mpumalanga from 15-18 June 2019. This four-day favourite cycle race covered a total of 320km of tough terrain which included a 6400m of ascent via the legendary mountains of Mpumalanga including Kaapmuiden and Spitzkop and parts of the Long Tom Pass. In 2019 race organisers introduced the Elite / Professional Category - “a race within a race” at the PPS Panorama Tour. It was the same route; the same PPS Panorama rules applied with a separate start time. The new event also came with a R40 000 cash prize. For the Traditional Tour, stage prizes and a final prize of R30 000 for the Overall Men and Overall Women winners. In the Traditional Tour category in four all-out stages, the Overall Men’s winners were Theuns Van Der Bank and Christiaan Janse Van Rensburg (Hartlief Deli P/B Powerbar SV) followed by Egon Campbell and Marnus Potgieter, and Johann Naude and David Labuschagne in third. Overall Demacon’s Carla Oberholzer and Kimberley Le Court De Billot had a clean sweep throughout the PPS Panorama Tour, taking all four stage wins and the Open Women’s first prize with teammates Suzan Cronje and Lynette Burger second, while Stacey Paul and Gillian Fourie finished third.

CAPE TOWN CELEBRATES WORLD BICYCLE DAY As noted in a recent policy brief written by transport specialist Richard Gordge for Open Streets Cape Town: “Making trips by walking and cycling is good for physical and mental health, improving quality of life and the environment, and boosting productivity while reducing costs to the public purse. Increasing non-motorised travel is a core and vital component for Cape Town’s transport and urban development future.” ”I ride my bicycle to work in Pinelands every day and besides the challenges – reckless drivers and lack of safe cycling lanes – it sets my day on the right course, saves me money and allows me to experience Cape Town in a complete new way,” says Noluthando Mqadi.

World Bicycle Day was celebrated across the globe on Monday, 3 June and Cape Town’s bicycle advocates came together to reward cycle commuters. Set up opposite Hartleyvale Stadium on the Liesbeek Parkway cycle path into the Cape Town CBD, the team handed out gifts to people cycling into town, capturing stories of everyday commuter champions.

Cycling in Cape Town has grown over the years, yet the transition from recreational cycling to commuting cycling has been slow. The challenges are not uncommon to other cities of the global South and include resource allocation to better infrastructure, safety, and cultural norms that celebrate the status of private vehicles, amongst others. Nevertheless, there are committed advocates in Cape Town working to overcome those obstacles.

One of the surprise recipients of a reward was cycling enthusiast and Premier of the Western Cape, Alan Winde, who encouraged others to join in, get on bicycles and help reduce congestion on our roads.

“The bicycle is a tool that can change our cities. Unfortunately, in South Africa not everyone learns how to cycle and it is the first step in making a 2-wheel mobility revolution a reality. I have been teaching adults for a few years with my Learn2Cycle classes on a Saturday morning, and have already seen this simple skill changes lives,” says Lebogang Mokwena, Cape Town Bicycle Mayor.

The group of advocates included Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN Bikes), Cape Town Bicycle Mayor Lebogang Mokwena, Bicycle South, Bike4All, Khaltsha Cycles, LIFE Brand, Open Streets Cape Town, Pedal Power Association and Qhubeka. Through various programmes, they all promote the use of the bicycle in and around Cape Town, believing it can radically improve the city’s transport landscape, as an affordable and environmentally friendly means of transport.

And this World Bicycle Day activation on a chilly Monday morning in Cape Town is a statement of the commitment civil society has made to see our city contribute to the type of change that is required at a global scale to respond to our climate crisis.

The United Nations describes the bicycle as “a symbol of sustainable transportation that conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate.”

ROUTE OPTIONS FOR STELLENBOSCH MTB CHALLENGE As one of the premier venues in South Africa, Spier Wine Estate needs no introduction and has loads on offer for riders and spectators alike with wonderful food at Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery, wine, and beautiful scenery to wow the senses. The two routes chosen for this year’s challenge compliments the venue and offering perfectly. Excellent waterpoints are planned with food and drinks and even Bubbly and chocolate! As well as tech zones, to support riders that are having any mechanicals. The 22km is the perfect beginner’s route with under 300m of climbing on mostly open dirt roads and tracks. You’ll ride through vineyards orchards and large stretches of fynbos and can expect beautiful views of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains.

The 14th edition of the Stellenbosch MTB Challenge will take place on 28 July 2019. For the second year the event will take a break from the annual 6 route format and focuses on fun and family with a 2 route options launching from Spier Wine Estate!

“The 50km mirrors the 2017 route with of course the exclusion of the town-based route sections. To make up for these excluded sections we are adding routing on the south western side of the course, including more riding in the Vlaeberg area. To the best of our knowledge, these additional routes have never been used in a mountain event before.”

Trail runners also get to enjoy this beautiful area on Saturday, 27 July with three distances to suit all fitness levels.

Riders can expect well stocked refreshment stations, technical support on route and of course all finishers get a special commemorative medal. At the finish carnival there will be kid’s entertainment, live music, food and drink, and a lucky draw with loads of prizes, including a Giant Bicycles mountain bike to be won!

The picturesque routes will cater for beginner to intermediate riders in keeping with the theme of having fun outside with friends & family.

Join in on the festive winter outdoor weekend in the Winelands with lots on offer at the start/finish for the whole family.
