In the women’s race Western Cape cyclist Candice Lill raced to victory at the 2019 South African XCO Champs on a dry and chilly highveld afternoon at Thaba Trails in Johannesburg on 20 July 2019. All the excitement happened at the women's race when Candice Lill claimed her first elite national title beating her rival, Mariske Strauss by a comfortable 48 seconds with Cherie Redecker in third place. The last time Candice won the national champs was back in 2013 when she raced in the U23 category. Her cycling career reached new heights when she won the South African MTB XCO Cup Series #4 at Mankele

Bike Park in Mbombela and placed 19th in the UCI MTB World Cup that took place in Les Gets, France. Tiffany Keep, U23 National Road Champ claimed the victory over Danielle Strydom in the U23 women’s race and continued her winning streak after her recent win at the University Sports SA (USSA) Cycling Champs and the Knysna Cycle Tour. Zandri Strydom, a very technically gifted mountain-biker completely blew the field apart in the Junior women’s race, beating Emma van Coller by 6 minutes 18 seconds.

XCO Mountain Biking Unlike road, which only has a 12-month qualification time line (24 October 2018 - 23 October 2019), mountain biking XCO qualification is calculated by the sum of a nation’s top ranked riders from 28 May 2018 - 27 May 2019 added to the sum of the top three ranked riders from 28 May 2019 - 27 May 2020. Cycling SA’s goal to qualify two men and two women for Tokyo, is to be ranked between three to seven in the UCI Olympic qualification ranking. With outstanding results from Alan Hatherly (U23 World Champion in 2018) Candice Lill having achieved two Track Cycling - The qualification criteria are very high, with both team versions of the sport (team sprint, Madison and team pursuit), only allowing qualification for nations ranked in the top seven and eight respectively. Continents that do not qualify for riders in these disciplines can qualify individuals through international ranking of the sprint or Omnium for men and women. Currently Cycling SA has a few contenders improving their international ranking, namely Jean Spies and Charlene Du Preez. Jean Spies is currently ranked 21st in the Keirin and 38th in the individual sprint; whilst Charlene is Ranked 33rd in the individual sprint and 26th in the Keirin.

BMX - Cycling SA’s goal to be ranked between 6-11 on the international ranking, is in progress. The UCI BMX World Championships coming up will be a test to see if our riders can progress to the finals, to improve on our current international ranking of 13th place on the UCI Olympic programme. Much like MTB, the BMX qualifications run over a two-year period.

Road Cycling - Men’s Road Cycling is currently ranked 18th, despite the number of South African’s competing abroad in high points value points races, is not the same as most European countries. “We still have some strategic events in hand to maintain our ranking, for four men to complete in Tokyo 2020. Our women’s national ranking is 12th, and we are currently within the range we have targeted. Cycling SA will be sending a women’s team to Europe during September, to compete in various UCI events leading up to UCI World Championships in Yorkshire.”

Para-Cycling - Para-cycling, due to its number of categories, has a very complex qualification system. Based on individuals’ rankings as per 31 December 2019, riders must complete in at least one UCI World Cup and the UCI World Championships in 2019. All the qualifying nations’ points are added up and then divided by the number of available Olympic places. Then in turn, each nations’ ranking points is divided by this factor, to determine the number of athletes each nation qualifies for (max 13 for men and six for women). Reimbursement Policy - In terms of the Agenda 2020 reimbursement policy, Cycling SA has already reimbursed riders to the value of R446,498 since inception in November 2018 across the five disciplines. The national body has also invested R730,000 in hosting UCI events and National Championships this year, bringing total high-performance investment to R1,176million.

The 2019 South African XCO Champs would form the final event in Alan Hatherly’s three week racing stint and would take some careful preparation to be on top of his game. Returning from two somewhat disappointing World Cup races in Andorra and France, Alan put in a safe and controlled ride to take his third Elite title. Behind Alan in second, was Jan Withaar who finished in second with Buys rounding out the podium in third. As Hatherly wraps up his local Cross-Country season, he shifts focus to the remainder of the World Cup races. He will head back to Europe for the Italian and Swiss rounds, to Canada and America at the end of August for World Champs and the final round of the World Cup in Snowshoe, USA.” “I have been struggling the past few weeks to keep my body on track, but thankfully some recovery during the week was enough to get me ready for the race. It’s really important to me to keep the South African Flag on my chest, and I put a lot of personal pressure on myself to deliver the goods,” described Hatherly. The U23 category race saw Henry Liebenberg ride to victory with Julian Jessop and Marco Joubert rounding out the podium, while Luke Moir secured the junior men’s title by beating Johan van Zyl and Tristan Nortje to the finish-line. Other Western Cape podium finishers include: Luca Ruwiel, Nico Pfitzenmaier, Pieter Matthysen, Nicole Murphy, Philip Van Schalkwyk, Hendre De Villiers, Jeandre Ungerer, Jed Bridger and Ryan Koorzen. IN THE PENULTIMATE GIRO-STAGE

South African Road Champion, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio - runner-up in last year’s Giro Rosa, felt confident leading up to the Giro Rosa that took place from 5 - 14 July in Italy. Ashleigh, riding for CCC-Liv finished third overall in this year’s Tour of California, said the Italian tour was always a highlight. After a disappointing time trial on Stage 1, she lost valuable time and placed ninth on General Classification. On Stage 3 she fought back and came fifth. Ashleigh achieved an excellent result with a third place in Stage 9 - the penultimate stage of the Giro Rosa. The finish line was drawn on top of the Montasio after a long, monstrous climb with gradients up to 20 percent. Stage winner Anna van der Breggen and the pink jersey leader Annemiek van Vleuten finished ahead of Ashleigh.

The first African leader of the Tour de France, for two days in 2013, Daryl Impey became the second South African stage winner after Robert Hunter in Montpellier in 2007 as he outsprinted his last breakaway companion, Belgium’s Tiesj Benoot, in Brioude on Stage 9, who attacked from the peloton in the last climb but was brought back by Team Ineos. The deficit of the peloton was 8’50’’ at Mur d’Aurec. A time gap of 10’49’’ was recorded at km 47, after which Deceuninck-Quick Step maintained it just above ten minutes. Roche and Benoot attacked from the leading group reduced to seven riders. Impey came across and passed first at côte de St-Just with 13km remaining. Benoot and Impey rode to victory 7km before the end while Romain Bardet, Richie Porte and Steven Kruijswijk attacked in the côte de St-Just but Team Ineos was prompt to bring them back. Benoot and Impey shared the turns to avoid the return of their former breakaway companions. Benoot took the initiative of launching the sprint but Impey proved to be the fastest. He’s the first rider to win a Tour de France stage with the South Africa national champion jersey. The last victory of his Mitchelton-Scott team was with Michael Matthews in 2016.

With this great performance, the South African took a few places back in the general classification and placed fourth overall at the Giro Rosa when the final stage finished in Udine, Italy on 14 July.

POSTHUMUS & WEBB WIN 2019 AROUND THE POT Also in contention for victory, as the race was briefly neutralised for the crossing of the Breede River on the hand-drawn Malgas Ferry, were Oliver Munnik, Erik Kleinhans, Louis Visser and Robert Hobson, among others. On the relentless rolling climbs from Malgas back towards Swellendam, on the Eastern side of the river, Posthumus escaped with Hobson and Visser. Posthumus, who rides in the colours of Team dormakaba, then continued to inexorably exert pressure on his young rivals. Of the leading trio, Visser, who represents Team TEG Procycling was the first to crack. Then Hobson slipped from Posthumus’s wheel. Posthumus rode into Swellendam to claim the 2019 Chas Everitt Around the Pot Overberg 100-Miler, Presented by SEESA, in a time of 5 hours, 22 minutes and 50 seconds. Hobson was second, 4 minutes and 45 seconds later, while Visser hung on to finish third, 5 minutes and 54 seconds behind the race winner.

Mike Posthumus and Courtney Webb raced to victories, in muddy conditions, at the 2019 Chas Everitt Around The Pot – Overberg 100Miler – Presented by SEESA. The muddy conditions were caused by torrential rain pre-race. Fortunately for the 1 000 odd cyclists, who gathered in the Overberg town of Swellendam, the rain held off during the races. Along with the flagship 100-mile distance, the event also boasted a 60 and 25-miler races, as well as a children’s lap race at the Swellendam Show Grounds Start/Finish venue. In the elite men’s race Posthumus was keen to ensure that the pace was high from the off. The doctor of Sports Science did big turns at the head of a select group which raced through the first 100 kilometres together.

In the women’s race, Webb rode to a dominant win over the defending champion Kylie Hanekom. The talented Under 23 rider distanced her main rival relatively early in the race and gradually extended her lead over the second half of the route. However, Hanekom was not disappointed to give up her title. She was more than happy to be racing in such a beautiful part of the country. “It was muddy, damp and chilly,” Hanekom revealed. “But the amazing views and route more than made up for that. Even though there were a lot more entrants this year, the Chas Everitt Around the Pot Overberg 100-Miler, Presented by SEESA, still had that great small town feel that made me fall in love with it initially,” the second placed finisher praised. Webb and Hanekom were joined on the women’s podium by Shauna Esmeyer. Webb’s winning time was 6 hours, 28 minutes and 18 seconds. Hanekom was 5 minutes and 59 seconds slower over the 160 kilometre long course, while Esmeyer was a further 31 seconds slower.

PODIUM FOR CHARLENE DU PREEZ - KEEPS HER TRACK DREAM ALIVE South African track cyclist Charlene du Preez has been on a mission to garner UCI points in order to qualify for the 2019 UCI Track World Cups starting in November, with the most recent podium position awarded at the Dublin Track Cycling International (UCI/C1) race in Ireland from 6-7 July where Charlene finished in third place. Putting in some solid miles on the track this year, her campaign has included some valuable time overseas at UCI-accredited races, where her results are steadily climbing. Earlier this year, Charlene participated in the South African Track National Championships in Cape Town at the end of March, followed by her cycling club’s – Black Line – sprint event in Derby (UK) on 27 May. These events were all part of Charlene’s lead up to the international UCI races in June, beginning with the GP Brno Track Cycling (UCI/C1) in Czech Republic and the Cottbuser SprintCup in Germany (UCI/C1). In July she raced the Dublin Track Cycling International (UCI/C1) in Ireland where she was placed third and the highlight of the season so far. She participated in a race in Italy and in Le Mans where-after she will compete on 23 August in Germany and 20 August - 1 September in Lithuania. “It is going well but the aim is not to be at peak performance now, so we take this as part of my training,” said Charlene. “As long as I maintain my current ranking, I should qualify for the UCI World Cups, which start in November.” Charlene has recorded some personal best times, recording 11.454 on an indoor track for the flying 200m at the club event. That was quite pleasing because I didn’t really taper for that race, so I’m looking forward to see times closer to November,” she concluded. With some big events and new times behind her, Charlene feels good about the season that lies ahead of her. “I know I am still learning a lot – it is one thing to be faster, but the sprint and keirin in track cycling is a very tactical game and the best way to learn is with racing experience.”

RISE. BY UWE KOETTER. In celebration of 51 years as South Africa’s leading bespoke jeweller, Uwe Koetter launched the RISE virtual cycling challenge during June. The Challenge The virtual challenge takes place over six months – between July and November 2019 - with all non-professional riders welcome. Riders are challenged to achieve the greatest weighted elevation over this period with the winner taking away bragging rights as well as his or her share of more than R51 000 in prizes. The virtual challenge format allows users from across the country to participate with entries from over seven provinces received to date. To compete in the challenge, riders simply need to complete the entry form at https://uwekoetter.com/rise-thechallenge/#entry-form and connect their Strava® accounts. The Formula Weighted elevation is calculated by dividing personal bests achieved between July and November 2019 by personal bests achieved over the same period a year earlier. The result is referred to as the multiplier as is limited to two. The total elevation achieved by each rider is multiplied by the result calculated above to achieve a weighted elevation.

MOUNTAIN BIKERS CELEBRATE FATHER OF THE NATION AT MANDELA DAY MTB DASH

an intermediate 21km event for weekend warriors and part-time mountain bikers; or a 10km fun ride aimed at younger riders and families, those who are learning the sport, and those who simply want some fun in the saddle. This year all three events have also been opened up to E-Bikes which will allow the growing band of power-assisted riders to be part of the celebration. As always the prizes for the top riders are among the best for a one-day standard classic distance event with R10 000 each for the winning male and female elite riders. The large prize fund normally means there is a strong contingent of top riders battling for the lead. Last year was no different with Candice Lill and Matthys Beukes claiming the honours. Mountain bikers will once again have their annual opportunity to celebrate the life of the Father of the Nation when the Mandela Day Marathon MTB Dash takes place on Saturday, 24 August at the Mandela Capture Site near Howick. The three mountain bike races are part of the weekend of events that include a road running marathon, trail runs, a fun run and a triathlon, all taking place in honour of former President Nelson Mandela. The jamboree of participation sports which are centred around the world-famous Mandela Capture Site has quickly established itself as one of the top sporting events hosted in KZN. Mountain bikers have the choice of riding in memory of South Africa’s greatest global icon in three different events - a 42km race for serious top-level competitors;

All the Mandela Day MTB Dash events start and finish at the world famous capture site in Lions River. The routes offer riders a chance to tackle some of the best trails in KwaZulu-Natal on a course created by Nick Floros, the Pietermaritzburg-based international course designer. While the slick organisation and well-prepared course are two major factors which will attract riders to this event, the chance to ride in honour of Madiba, the Father of the Nation, makes it a must-do for mountain bikers who want to pay homage to the deeply respected Nobel Peace Prize winner who was instrumental in taking South Africa into a peaceful democracy. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and Cycling South Africa (Cycling SA) will host the Africa Cup cycling event from 10-13 October 2019 and will see 20 African nations competing over four days in an event that will offer UCI points towards qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The inaugural Africa Cup took place in Eritrea last year and Nelson Mandela Bay is ready to show itself off as a world-class sporting destination with the second edition. The event format comprises four one-day races, featuring an individual time trial, mixed relay, criterium and a road race. Africa Cup is the first event in a three-year partnership between NMBM and Cycling SA to bring international and championship events to Nelson Mandela Bay. A legacy project is at the heart of the partnership, whereby cycling programs will be set up in peri-urban areas with the intention to increase the existing cycling culture in the Eastern Cape. The Africa Cup event is open to African national teams, designed to give nations the chance to improve their international rankings. “The event provides a unique opportunity for African cyclists, and in particular women cyclists, an opportunity to gain more UCI race days – where the continental program of events focuses largely on men’s’ road racing. It’s designed to uplift nations in the international rankings. Bringing international races into communities will hopefully entice young people to take up cycling,” Zamuxolo Xatasi, President of Cycling SA said. The racing details are as follows: Day 1 - October 10 (Individual Time Trial), Day 2 - October 11, (Mixed Relay), Day 3 - October 12, (Criterium Race), Day 4 - October 13, (Road Race).

WITH DISCOVERY AND 947 Discovery and 947 are excited to announce a revitalised 23rd edition of Joburg’s most iconic cycling event, encouraging cyclists to move through the city’s streets like never before in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg on Sunday, 17 November 2019 at Riversands Commercial Park. As part of Discovery’s global commitment to make 100-million people 20% more active by 2025, the event will be staged with an invigorated vision to get more people moving by taking the promotion and growth of cycling in South Africa to the next level. “We’re thrilled to join 947 and set the pace in our home city by hosting the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg,” says Discovery’s Chief Marketing Officer, Firoze Bhorat. “For many years, this signature Joburg event has created an opportunity for people to improve their health outcomes by participating in an iconic city race, and to make lasting memories along the way. Last year, over 40% of 947 cycle race finishers were Vitality members – that’s nearly 10,000 adults out of a field of 25 000. We’re not only looking to build on the number of Vitality members we can get cycling, but how many others we can encourage to be active,” adds Bhorat. Back by popular demand, the event returns with 2018’s flipped route that spans approximately 94.7km of thrilling Joburg terrain that cyclists get to own for a day. The challenge remains, but the spin on the ‘traditional’ route ensures that cyclists get the

tough climbs out of the way while their legs are still fresh. Supported and hosted by the City of Joburg, cyclists will get to enjoy a safe ride with full road closures on the route. The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg will be bigger and more inclusive than ever with the introduction of a shorter 40km route aimed at novice riders with the appetite to conquer the streets of Joburg at a distance that matches their fitness level. Speaking from France, South African Road Champion and Stage 9 Tour de France Winner, Daryl Impey from Team Mitchelton–Scott, welcomed the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg announcement: “I’m really thrilled to hear about the news that Discovery is investing in our sport. Hope to see you all there and good luck!” Discovery Vitality members will be pleased to learn they will be able to earn 1100 Vitality points for the 94.7km Ride Joburg and 800 Vitality points for the new 40km route.

NEXT GENERATION OF SA PRO CYCLISTS ON THE MOVE With the aim of nurturing the next generation of South African professional cyclists, the PPA founded the PPA Junior High Performance Academy earlier this year and invited young riders between 16 - 18 years of age to apply for its inaugural intake. The riders were required to submit a letter motivating why they should be included, along with a CV of recent and previous race results, as well as any previous performance testing data. After assessing all the applications, 15 very deserving winners have been invited to attend a five-day camp at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa in Cape Town that will consist of various testing and training sessions. The winners are: Joel Davis, Sundisile Mneno, Sibusiso Motsopi, Marc Denhere, Sisipho Willie, Tyler Lange, Justin Chesterton, Luca Ruwiel, Luke Moir, Nicholas Friedrich, Amber Hindmarch, Julia Marx, Tashreeq Abrahams, Imtiaaz van der Hoven and Jason Bruintjies.

PEDAL POWER ASSOCIATION - PLAN OF ACTION FOR WEST COAST CYCLE PATH The Pedal Power Association (PPA), has provided input and information to the City of Cape Town and the South African Police Services (SAPS), to implement a strategy to make to West Coast cycle path safer for all cyclists. As useful as it has been for cyclists, the West Coast cycle path route in and out of the city has also been a dangerous one – since 2017, 15 cases of cyclists being robbed have been reported to the PPA. “However, given that not all cases get reported to us or police authorities, the actual number of incidents is much higher. SAPS, in conjunction with City Of Cape Town, has assessed that it is a criminal element among vagrants living along certain areas along the path that are the biggest threat.” In a recent meeting chaired by Pieter Robberts, Director Policing and Law Enforcement for the City of Cape Town that included the PPA and other role players, the criminal activities on the cycle path was specifically discussed and the following plan of action agreed upon. The area worst affected by the criminal activity is from Woodstock to the Paarden Island My Citi bus stop. This will now be patrolled by a Law Enforcement Unit employing two motorbikes, Segway’s, bicycles and foot patrols. The PPA is willing to donate #bike4All bicycles for these patrols over peak times from 6h00 to 9h00, and then again from 15h30 - 19h00, as well as Sundays when the path has the most traffic. There is also a need for volunteers to do patrols over weekends. Along with a clear and increased law enforcement presence, there will also be 24-hour CCTV monitoring of the area. City law enforcement will also conduct a weekly analysis of activity on the cycle path. They are also looking for volunteers to monitor the cameras in the traffic management centre. CALL TO ACTION - For the plan to work requires assistance from Cape Town’s cycling community too.

Report cases: The PPA and SAPS are calling on cyclists to report the cases to the Maitland or Milnerton Police Stations. Building a clear picture of the criminal activity is an important element of effective policing. Given the CCV footage that can quickly be retrieved, the chances of apprehending criminals and making a strong case against them is dramatically increased. The PPA is asking cyclists who have been attacked in the area from 2017 up to now to please contact liz@pedalpower.org.za with your case number and details in order to investigate possible prosecution. Volunteer for patrols: SAPS is asking for volunteers to join the Auxiliary Services that will patrol the area over weekends to ensure the path is safe. The PPA will host a co-ordination meeting, inviting all the role players and cyclists who regularly use the cycle path. The aim will be to discuss issues and give input to further improve this action plan.

These towns have also become favourite mountain bike destinations, due to amazing MTB trail networks supported by great local cuisine, diverse accommodation and their weekend breakaway characters. Quite recently another gorgeous item was added to the town’s menu’s; craft beer. The Old Potter’s Brewery in Greyton and the Hemel-en Aarde Brewery in Hermanus, have become popular stops for mountain bikers and tourists, to quench a thirsty throat with a delightful and variety of good craft beers. Join the October Beer and MTB Fest on the weekend of 5-6 October 2019. The Festival kicks off on Saturday morning 5 October at the Old Potters Brewery in Greyton, with registration, MTB rides on local trails, a German Band and an oversupply of wonderful craft beers and festival vibes. The race day starts on Sunday, 6 October 2019 at 8h00 from Old Potters in Greyton to the Hemel-en-Aarde Brewery at Wine Village, near Hermanus; a 85km scenic route with a 1550m elevation. There is also a shorter and circular 25km route option which starts at 8h15 and finishes at the Old Potters Brewery in Greyton . Greyton and Hermanus are commonly known for their unique character, clean air, mountains, whales and wines. During spring the farm landscapes of Greyton are transformed into beautiful wheat green and yellow canola fields.

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN CYCLING SUCCESSES University of Cape Town (UCT) cyclists did the institution proud in the recent University Sports South Africa (USSA) Cycling Championships 2019, with team members Hayley Preen and Courtney Webb taking second and third places overall in the women’s event. Preen also took two silvers (Sprinter’s jersey and King of the Mountain) while, Webb, cycling in her USSA debut, took the King of the Mountain (KOM) bronze. The men’s champion’s crown went to Tuks student Alexander Worsdale, while Tiffany Keep (Varsity College) took the women’s title. The championships, held over four days at the beginning of July, comprised a road tour, hill climb, individual time trial and a criterium, as well as a mountain bike race. The UCT men’s team, walked away with two podium finishes on stages, as well as a silver in the Sprinter’s jersey and a third overall for the team position, behind very strong University of Pretoria (Tuks) and Stellenbosch University (Maties) teams. During Stage 5 criterium, team captain Martin Freyer and Luke Evans fought back valiantly, with Freyer narrowly beaten to the line by Gert Heyns, the Maties student who was crowned USSA mountain bike champion for the first time in his career when the championships concluded in Stellenbosch. UCT’s women’s team, prepared for three days of hard racing, saw Preen finish second in both the long stage (100km) and the short stage (63km). Webb’s third place in the latter stage, a few minutes behind Preen and several minutes ahead of her competitor in the third GC spot, bumped Webb up from eighth to fourth in the GC. Preen was again second in the Stage 3 hill climb. Webb finished fourth, closing the time gap on the GC third place.

Stage 4 saw an impressive result for the home team, with four cyclists finishing in the top 10 – Preen in second, Webb in sixth, Megan McCarley in seventh and Saskia van der Merwe in 10th. The final criterium saw another second-place finish for Preen, and a fourth spot for Van der Merwe. McCarley said the biggest take-home from USSA 2019 was the overall improvement in the women’s racing team. “With the majority of the team still eligible to race for UCT for another year, we are excited to see what future racing holds,” she said.

Is it the end of an era for the historic Bellville Velodrome and Athletics Stadium? It will become, if no major objections are received by 14 August 2019. The City of Cape Town Council decided to call for public participation regarding the use, control, and management of the Velodrome & Athletic Stadium and the sale of the unregistered erven Erf 41264, 41265, and 40820 – including the air rights. The public participation process commenced on 14 June. This will give every resident, sports club and school an opportunity to be part of the decision-making process, specifically for the future of the Velodrome and Athletics Stadium.

The development was supposed to be completed by the end of 2014. A tender dispute between the City of Cape Town and a property development consortium has held up the development of the Bellville velodrome almost 10 years after it was awarded.

The property is located in Bellville on Carl Cronje Drive in Tyger Valley. It includes the velodrome, athletic stadium and the adjacent public parking area. A public meeting was held on 25 July 2019 at the Bellville Velodrome with attendance from athletes, residents, sports clubs, parents, and schools, to get answers from the City of Cape Town. “Thank you to the club members who responded to our call to attend last night’s meeting. Much has been said by the public, and very little by City of Cape Town. However, what can clearly be confirmed, is that sports such as cycling, athletics,

NISSAN TRAILSEEKER MTB

NAMAQUA DAISY CHALLENGE

A chilly morning greeted riders to the third leg of the Nissan Trailseeker MTB Series in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, Hermanus on 6 July 2019. The stunning Sumaridge Wine Estate was the perfect venue for the race, with a picturesque backdrop of the ocean and wine valley below. Gushing winds made the race truly interesting and added to the already tough elevation.

On 10 - 11 August 2019 Die Keldery in Vredendal will be hosting the annual Namaqua Daisy Challenge. In addition to the 1-day races, they have a new challenge this year - the 2-day extreme event. These are MTB and trail running races that consists of three stages. The MTB Xtreme Challenge consists of three stages - the technical stage, a night ride, and lastly a gravel ride. The 55km technical stage kicks off with a cycle through the outskirts of Vredendal. Some singletrack, technical climbs and even a short rock garden adds excitement to this stage. Riders should remember to keep some gas in the tank for upcoming stages and enjoy the daisies in bloom. Next up is the 15km night ride. This stage will start shortly after sunset. Front and rear lights are compulsory. Cyclists finish the 2-day challenge with a 95km gravel ride. Riders will ride along the sea past Doringbaai and Strandfontein. Riders will travel via the Olifants River canal and farm roads towards Vredendal and to Die Keldery Restaurant. The race ends with a nice flat sprint, where after riders can enjoy a well deserved cold one and exchange “war” stories with fellow cyclists. There will be a R5 000 prize for the Xtreme MTB men and women overall winners and a R2 500 prize for the Xtreme Trail Run men & women overall winners. Like previous years runners or cyclists can take part in the 1-day races on 11 August. If you prefer mountain biking, register for the 15km (new route), 27km or 45km MTB routes. This year there will also be an e-bike category at the Daisy Challenge. The Daisy Challenge will be hosting a fun-filled and colorful Colour Fun Run & Ride. This event is always the highlight of the Namaqua Daisy Challenge and is perfect for children, less experienced runners and cyclists, or anyone who wants to have lots of fun. After all the races, participants and their families will gather at Die Keldery for some festivities and celebration.

The race attracted 700 entrants from all over South Africa to compete in one of the most scenic destinations. The routes had beautiful single tracks winding through vineyards, jeep tracks and a view from Rotary drive which overlooks the entire Hermanus bay. Both SA XCM Champions, Arno du Toit and Samantha Sanders were leading throughout the race, kept their lead solid and took the title again - two weeks in a row. On 17 August 2019 the Nissan Trailseeker Series stops over for Round #4 in the heart of the Cape Winelands which is arguably the best trails in SA. The picturesque town of Wellington is a scenic 45 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, with lots to offer to visitors both on and off the bike. The beautiful Bosman Family Vineyards is the perfect venue to host such a fun and family friendly event. New additions to the legendary trails will be unveiled, with challenging and enjoyable features for riders of all skill- and fitness levels.
