PPA DEMANDS SAFER ROADS FOR CYCLISTS
Photo: Cyclists gathered in Cape Town on Saturday 6 May 2017 in memory of cyclists who have been killed or injured on WC roads - Photo Credit: Pedal Power Association
The Pedal Power Association, together with more than 300 cyclists from all walks of life, took to the streets of Cape Town on Saturday 6 May 2017 to ride in memory of cyclists who have been killed or injured on Western Cape roads and to hand over a letter of concern to local authorities.
Rezelman added that efforts to increase the number of cycling paths are applauded but that the PPA’s grievances lie with the seeming inability of the authorities to successfully prosecute the drivers of vehicles who crashed into and badly injured, maimed or killed cyclists on the roads.
Rens Rezelman, chairman of the PPA, read out the cyclists’ concerns to the cyclists attending the ride and the officials who received the letters on behalf of the City and Provincial officials.“In every incident involving a motorist where a cyclist was killed or injured, the 1 meter ‘passing law’ has been broken,” Rezelman said. “In 2016, 27 cyclists were killed on Western Cape roads alone.”
“Despite witnesses being present and the obvious breaking of various traffic laws including the 1m law in each incident, not one motorist has been successfully put behind bars for the destruction of or taking of another life,” Rezelman said.

The Cross Cape cycle route, which travels through some of the most scenic small towns across the Western Cape, is expected to deliver a significant economic impact to the province’s rural economy. The route is an initiative of the Western Cape Government, and supported by Wesgro, municipalities, tourism offices across the province, as well as the private sector. The Cross Cape Cycle Route was launched by Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities in Stellenbosch on 11 May 2017, where he outlined the province’s cycling initiative ahead of the inaugural ride from Plettenberg Bay to Stellenbosch. He invited residents in each of the participating towns to join the group as they travelled through each leg. He said the 742km route would drive tourists to towns across the “I chose to ride the route because I love cycling and to raise province, creating jobs and growth. awareness on visually impaired cycling, to experience the On 12 May Alan Winde and a group of riders started the beauty of the Western Cape. BEKKENK BREAKS COURSE RECORD TO WIN 36ONE! The near perfect weather conditions and relatively smooth surfaces on the Rooiberg Pass contributed to a fast paced 2017 36ONE MTB Challenge which was won by Ramses Bekkenk in a new record time of 13 hours, 59 minutes and 55 seconds, on 22 April 2017. Jeannie Dreyer was the first woman to complete the 361 kilometre long route – which started and finished at Kleinplaas Holiday Resort in Oudtshoorn – in a time of 16 hours, 59 minutes and 27 seconds, which was 27 minutes slower than the women’s record she set in 2015. Dutch mountain biker Bekkenk, riding in the KMC-Fruit to Go colours, had to win the race the hard way riding solo for 270 kilometres; after Jean Biermans double flatted while sharing the lead with him shortly after Check Point 1. Bekkenk had punctured 15 kilometres before the first Check Point, but he managed to repair the flat and rejoin the leading group, before changing wheels at the Check Point. Bekkenk had expressed his reticence, before the race, to attack from too far out and when Biermans punctured, Bekkenk initially soft peddled waiting for his compatriot, but when Biermans did not catch him Bekkenk forged on alone. Biermans for his part was struggling with a short valve which he inadvertently broke forcing him to insert his second and final spare tube. When he punctured again at the 170 kilometre mark, his race was well and truly over.

TEAM DIMENSION DATA FOR QHUBEKA AND QHUBEKA SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS BEYOND SPORT GLOBAL AWARDS
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka and Qhubeka have been shortlisted for the prestigious annual Beyond Sport Global Awards, in the Best Partnership or Collaboration category. The awards, currently in their ninth year, are aimed at giving recognition to organisations that are successfully using sport to promote and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Qhubeka and Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka’s entry is one of four shortlisted in the Best Partnership or Collaboration category.
The winners, selected after a detailed and audited judging process, will receive a package of substantial business and strategic support, global industry recognition and access to exclusive partnership opportunities. “We are enormously excited that our partnership with Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka has been shortlisted for the 2017 Beyond Sport Global Awards,” says Tsatsi Phaweni, Qhubeka Executive Director, who will represent Qhubeka at the awards.” “We have been collaborating for many years, and the support that the team has given us as they have grown and joined the World Tour ranks has been instrumental in helping us change thousands of lives with bicycles.” “Thanks to the visibility that Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka brings to the Qhubeka charity, as well as through their fundraising support and the generosity of their sponsors, we have been able to connect entire communities with bicycles. ” “We hope that the Beyond Sport Global Awards will inspire other leading sports teams to create new mutually beneficial partnerships too.” “It’s a real honour to be shortlisted,” says Doug Ryder, Team Principal at Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. “Qhubeka is at the heart of why we ride – to help change people’s lives with bicycles, whether it’s through funding bicycles for children who are walking long distances to school every day, or by inspiring them to take up cycling as a sport.” “I also believe that our relationship with Qhubeka is one of the reasons that the cycling world has embraced us. We hope to continue bringing awareness to the charity through every milestone we celebrate as a team.” The Beyond Sport Global Award winners will be announced at the Beyond Sport United 2017 event in New York City on 26 July.
NATIONAL TEAM RIDERS TO SELF-FUND INTERNATIONAL EVENTS Due to the current economic climate and limited funding and as part of our cost cutting and financial management discipline Cycling South Africa has instituted a few very important measures. One of these is the requirement for national team riders to fund their own travel and subsistence to international events – self-funded trips. “For a long period Cycling South Africa has tried to absorb as much of these costs for national teams, but we have reached the stage where this is no longer possible. This self-funded decision (along with the other cost-cutting measures) was not taken lightly. We appeal to our Provincial and Regional affiliates to please assist riders with applications for funding at the local provincial and regional levels,” William Newman, President CyclingSA. According to Cycling South Africa the athletes can make use of the following available funding sources: Provincial Sports Departments, Provincial Sports Confederations, Regional Sports Councils, Regional Sports Departments, Municipal Sports Departments, and the National Lotteries Commission. Provinces, regions and clubs are urged to make application for rider assistance to these entities. With the self-funded option the same selection criteria will prevail – riders will be selected on merit and not on favourable economic circumstances. Once selected, the rider must make an effort to raise the necessary funding via the above channels through his/her club, region and province. Although self-funded, all travel arrangements are still to be co-ordinated via the Cycling South Africa office and the respective discipline Directors. “Our situation is by no means unique with many other National Federations in a similar situation as was shared at the recent SASCOC General meeting I attended last month,” Newman said. The work continues within Cycling South Africa to attract funding into the organisation with many income generating solutions being pursued along with ongoing discussions with potential partners.
Photo: Ashleigh Parsons
Ashleigh Parsons from Wellington has recently been selected to represent South Africa at the 2017 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Montichiari, Italy from 23-27 August 2017. However, this is a self-funded event so she needs to raise funds to cover the costs of her flights, accommodation and food. To enable Ashleigh to represent her country she will need to raise a substantial amount before leaving for Italy in August. She is determined to raise the funds as one of her biggest dreams since she was 7 years old was to take part in the World Track Cycling World Champs. She has put in a huge amount of time and effort in preparing for this moment. If you can financially assist Ashleigh to make her dream come true, kindly contact Zanne Parsons on 083 721 2380

SAFETY
LEGAL ADVICE ON CYCLING ACCIDENTS A cycling accident can be an overwhelming, not to mention traumatic, experience. Riders and drivers share the road on a daily basis and cycling safety has become a major concern as the number of accidents involving cyclists is on the rise, according to Arrive Alive. Gert Nel Incorporated Attorneys give advice on what to do in the event of a collision between a rider and motor vehicle. What to do after an accident - Immediately after the accident you should obtain as much information as possible. This would include registration numbers for the parties involved, ID numbers and telephone numbers. It is important to note that should there be witnesses, it is a good idea to get their details as well. Take photographs of the scene as well as the vehicles involved and record the circumstances in which the accident happened. Sharing the road with other users, cyclists are often placed in risky situations as many ignore the rules of the road. Accidents can happen to even the most experienced cyclists. It is important to note exactly where the point of impact happened and information about where the incident occurred (e.g. at a traffic light controlled intersection or at a four way stop). Try to record any conversation between the people involved as well as possible witnesses. All this may seem like a lot, as realistically circumstances at an accident scene are chaotic, but try and keep everything in mind when confronted with such a situation. What to expect in the case of the cyclist being at fault - Depending on how the accident occurred, the cyclist might be criminally liable, but this would be in extreme circumstances. There is, however, a civil liability that may follow. The driver of the vehicle would be able to claim for damages which include material (damage to vehicle etc.) and personal injuries from the cyclist, but would not be able to claim for personal injuries from the Road Accident Fund. This is because a cyclist does not comply with the description given in the Act of a third party. In a situation where the cyclist was completely at fault, they would not have a counter-claim against the motorist. What to expect in the case of the cyclist NOT being at fault - If the accident was through no fault of the cyclist, the affected party should report the incident to the nearest police station as well as consult with a doctor as soon as possible. Orthopaedic injuries often only become obvious at a later stage and by then it might be difficult to prove a connection should the cyclist later decide to claim for such injuries.
Make sure to keep records of any medical bills and accounts that might flow from receiving treatment. In the case of personal injury one should consult with a specialist personal injury attorney and lodge a claim against the Road Accident Fund (RAF) as soon as possible. A RAF claim caters for all the injured person’s personal requirements that might stem from the accident. Under certain circumstances, this may include medical expenses, loss of income, loss off support and general damages. The process of claiming is one that can take up to 36 months and the guidance of an attorney is recommended. It is important to note that in terms of the RAF Act the driver of a vehicle cannot be held liable in their personal capacity for any injuries suffered by the cyclist, the claim must be lodged against the RAF. The cyclist will be able to recover the damage to their bicycle from the driver of the vehicle and would be able to claim damages for personal injuries from the Road Accident Fund Act 56 of 1996. All the information was supplied by Gert Nel Incorporated Attorneys, Pretoria. Should you, or a rider you know, require legal advice on personal injury, visit www.gertnelincattorneys.co.za
PPA DEMANDS SAFER ROADS FOR CYCLISTS “We ask that you, as City and Provincial officials, follow these cases in a proactive manner and facilitate where reasonably possible, ‘unblocking’ blockages where they might occur,” Rezelman added. “If our roads don’t become safer, the vision of Cape Town becoming a cycling city will not be realized. “
(CONTINUE FROM PAGE 1)
Traffic Directorate head, Kenny Africa, thanked all the cyclists for supporting the ride stating that the lives of our cyclists on the roads are non-negotiable. Africa commented that the PPA is seen as a colleague of the traffic fraternity. He continued to say that the authorities will do everything possible to support the PPA’s cause but they need the assistance of cyclists to report incidents to his office directly. According to Africa, road safety is everyone’s responsibility and there needs to be mutual respect amongst road users. “We need everyone to come on board and assist to make the roads safe,” said Africa. Africa confirmed that he would be briefing all traffic officers on the ‘one metre law’ so that they have a better understanding of what it entails. Robert Vogel, PPA CEO, then thanked all the cyclists for taking the time to support the PPA on the day. He also thanked Mr Africa for his commitment. The PPA has to date invested millions in the Stay Wider of the Rider safe cycling campaign, asking motorists and cyclists alike to modify their behavior and do the right thing by obeying the rules of the road. “Behaviour shift is the only sustainable and cost-effective way to make the roads safer. Where the law is broken, we need a zero tolerance approach from the authorities,” Vogel concluded.
How To Make Our Roads Safer For Riders The Pedal Power Association has for 40 years been promoting making our roads safer for cyclists. As the safety of all our cyclists, from commuters to sports cyclists, is top of mind, PPA annually pours millions into a safe cycling campaign to educate road users about the vulnerability of cyclists on the roads. The PPA’s objective is to educate all road users to be tolerant, respectful and courteous towards each other on the road. The Association promote the slogans ‘Please Share the Road’ and ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ throughout South Africa. Anecdotal evidence is that motorists are currently giving cyclists’ a wider berth, but there are still so many people who need to be educated on how vulnerable cyclists really are on our roads. Statistics show 84% of cycling accidents are caused by vehicles connecting cyclists from behind at speed; not passing cyclists at a safe distance; or cyclists not being visible. The PPA launched the very successful ‘Cyclists Stay Alive at 1.5’ campaign back in 2011 which resulted in a law promulgated in 2013 in the Western Cape which states that motorists must pass cyclists with a passing distance of (at least) 1m. Through the STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign, PPA urges motorists to obey the law and pass cyclists at a safe distance of at least 1 metre or more.

#THROWBACK
#HouwhoekMTB
The Houw Hoek MTB Tour, originally known as the Wines2Whales Pre-Ride took place from 4-7 May, and attracted a line-up of about 740 riders. The event offered an opportunity for a family-and-friends breakaway weekend, with some of the best MTB Routes with both stages approximately 50km with a maximum of 800m climbing. A key objective of the weekend Tour is to offer MTB riders a cost effective, interesting and do-able multi-stage event. on some of the most famous MTB Trails including the Paul Cluver, Thandi and Houw Hoek trails, a well as a new and interesting change was the discontinuation of Kili Hill 1 on the Paul Cluver Wine Estate. The height of the Rietvlei dam wall was increased by 5 meters, creating a new and stunning contour route, eliminating an unnecessary drop and climb. Stage 2 started at the Houw Hoek Inn, via Botriver, where it narrows into the Wildekrans Winery and Hermanus trails, with the finish-line at Whalehaven Winery in Hermanus.
#RedstoneMTB
On 13 May 2017 Redstonehills MTB celebrated its 11th year with perfect weather and with the redstone hills as a backdrop you could hardly ask for more.
The event’s location is quite remote, it being situated on the slopes of the Swartberg Mountains between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn. This remoteness and rural atmosphere is probably the attraction to this event. The “plaasbasaar” gives a real rural feel to it, and at the same time gives the community the opportunity to generate funds. What started as a local-ward project became a parish project of the Dutch Reformed Church in Calitzdorp, which evolved into a community project under the auspices of the Redstone Hills Trust, achieving amazing work in the community. The racing was highly contested with good competition in all the distances. There were 4 MTB distances to choose from, 60, 43, 17, and 11 km. The 17 km was added this year to accommodate more riders from younger ages. This weekend was all about families and there were events for everyone. For the runners there were an 11 and 20 km Trail run as well as a 5 km fun walk. In the 43 MTB event Robin Poustie, a 71 year old, completed the race and received a prize for the oldest competitor of the day. Jakhals Events took over the race organizing duties from Dryland Event Management, and showed their ability to keep up the high standard. It is a pleasure to experience rural events with such a laid back atmosphere and still manage to set an high standard when it comes to organizing. They don’t compromise safety and everything runs on schedule.

#PaarlMTB
Organisers reinstated the Bestmed Paarl MTB Classic with the objective of building it into the premier off-road one-day race in the Cape Winelands. On 20 May the third edition of the race took participants through the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, Rhebokskloof Wine Estate and past the Taal Monument. Race director Darren Herbst had placed a lot of focus on the shorter race and had included a number of custom-built tracks more suited to weekend warrior type riders. Using home-ground knowledge to his advantage, HB Kruger led from start to finish to take the honours in the 60km feature race.

In the women’s race, Capetonian Carmen Buchacher also dominated from early on to lay the foundation for a comfortable victory and the 29-year-old was pleased to sign off in style before leaving for Europe.

Marathon enthusiasts endured extreme race conditions in the Pietermaritzburg autumn sun at the 2017 SA MTB Marathon Championship at Cascades MTB Park on 21 May 2017. NAD’s Nico Bell and Ascendis Health’s Robyn De Groot took the Elite Men and Women’s victories respectively on the day. Defending Men’s Champion Max Knox struggled with a puncture close to 20 kilometres into the race and had to pull out. Strong contender Gawie Combrinck was also forced to withdraw from the race due to an injury at the sani2c a week prior. In the 50-kilometre Junior race, Pieter du Toit took the top honours for the Men and Tiffany Keep won it for the Women. Tiffany’s father, Tim Keep was in charge of the Cross-country Eliminator Series for the younger age groups, as well as anyone who was willing to give it a try. The Series was an absolute entertainment for those on the ground waiting for friends and family to return from the marathon racing.

SPORT SCIENCE
STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY SPORT PHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY Sport Physiology Laboratory The Scientific Approach Many factors influence cyclists’ performance in the field. Some are easier to measure than others, and some are best evaluated in the field. However, it has been established that many laboratory tests and parameters that can be measured, are accurate predictors of performance in the field. The Sport Physiology Laboratory at Stellenbosch University is equipped with state-of-the-art exercise testing instruments to accurately and consistently monitor athletic performance through proven scientific methods and protocols. The results obtained from the test gives the cyclist proper scientific support to achieve optimal performance.
Why test?
Cycling specific tests
•
The results from the laboratory tests can be used to:
•
•
Assess the current physical and physiological attributes of the cyclist
•
Obtain information for individualized and sport-specific training regimes
•
Identify physical weaknesses
•
Quantify improvement in fitness and performance by comparing results to previous test
•
Enable the coach to assess the success of his/her training program
•
Monitor training progress and prevent overtraining
Max Heart rate vs. Lactate Threshold training zones. Lactate Threshold is the point where lactate accumulates in the blood faster than it can be removed or used as fuel. This is the intensity that you can maintain for ~ 40 – 60 minutes. Depending on your training status your HR @ lactate threshold occurs at different percentages of your maximal heart rate. Once your HR @ lactate threshold is determined we can use this to establish your training zones. HR @ lactate threshold is the preferred method of zone prescription in both athletes and recreational riders because it’s accurate and person-specific to individual ensuring you are targeting the correct zone and stimulating the appropriate physiological response.
• • • •
Maximal exercise capacity and lactate threshold - both the physiological fitness of the cyclist and accurate heart rate training zones can be determined for training purposes LSCT submaximal cycle test – used for monitoring training adaptations and fatigue Wingate Test – measures anaerobic capacity Time trials – analysis of peak and average power, heart rate and cadence, time of completion Spin Scan cycling efficiency – assess leg muscle efficiency and the distribution of power between the legs.
BodyMetrix It’s no surprise that a lighter cyclist go up the hill faster and a heavier cyclist are more powerful in the flat sprints. 1kg weight loss equates to about 6 seconds in a flat 40km time trial, but with a constant 5% gradient uphill the difference would blow out to 55 seconds. To improve your power-to- weight ratio, you have to increase your power, reduce your weight or a combination of both. If weight loss is the way to go we can help track your changes in body composition with BodyMetrix ultrasound technology. With each visit you will receive a comprehensive report including all the previous measurements. Results include height, weight, % body fat, % fat free mass, hydration status, health risk markers.
Indoor training sessions As individuals with regular jobs we don’t also have the time to go for long rides outside, and with winter coming the rain can make it a bit uncomfortable. Now you can complete a quality indoor training session on the comfort of your own bike on our Computrainers. Ride one of the pre-existing 3D courses and race against your friend. We can also simulate the route for your next race or you can opt for a power training session tailored to your current training status. DEVELOPMENT
BREAKAWAY RIDES DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF MTB KIDS Kate Slegrova and Katja Steenkamp are keen mountain bikers and have spent countless hours in the saddle at mountain bike races in South Africa and overseas. Very close to their heart is the development of the next generation, and they have been offering kids specific skills workshops and mountain bike holiday camps for the past three years. “We witness every week that children have the ability to pick up skills much faster than adults, and believe that the potential should be nurtured from a young age with regular practice,” says Katja. All BreakAway Rides’ sessions are based on a weekly progression program where the coaches teach a specific set of techniques each week that follow on each other. These techniques are, correct gear selection, braking, weight distribution and bike mechanics, followed by various techniques on different terrain as well as obstacle riding through rock gardens and rooty terrain. Towards the end of the term they focus on wheel lifting and riding drops and jumps. Currently BreakAway Rides accommodate two different skills levels, however, there is a growing demand to add a ‘fitness’ component to the skills training.
Once a technique is mastered on a specific terrain, an uphill, downhill, sand, and rock challenge is added. The vast network of trails available to BreakAway Rides leave much space to play, although they prefer Meerendal and Bloemendal as most child friendly areas within accessible vicinity during the week. The 3-Day Holiday workshops are very differently structured to the weekly rides. “We touch on all areas covered during the term including fundamentals, cornering, obstacle riding, wheel lifting, and smaller jumps and drops. But it is less in-depth compared to the weekly training. Over the 3 days, we incorporate strength and core exercises to improve mobility and coordination, and add our own mobile course to simulate trail features (e.g. obstacle and ramps). The combination of coordination exercises off the bike and skills training on the bike is a great spectacle for the kids as we time each child to complete the course.” The next workshop is scheduled for 3-5 July 2017. “Safety and professional personal approach is very important to us at BreakAway Rides. We never take more than six kids per instructor, have a tab on the health history and all our instructors are first aid certified.”
Children that join BreakAway Rides throughout the year show tremendous improvement in skills as they benefit from the fine tuning of their riding techniques through repetitive practice.
OUDTSHOORN CYCLING YOUTH FESTIVAL Eden Cycling will host the annual Oudtshoorn Youth Festival for the 7th consecutive year, during the first week of the July school holiday from Monday, 3 July to Wednesday, 5 July 2017. The Oudtshoorn Youth Festival is the stepping stone for young cyclists to develop bike skills that is often not up to standard. This event aims to create an opportunity for all riders under the age of 19 to participate against other riders with similar abilities. The emphasis is on team and mass participation and all events are structured in such a way that points will be awarded to every participant - even if they did not complete a race.
Hannele Steyn joined BreakAway Rides in April 2017, notwithstanding the wealth of experience as a professional athlete, she has also been a skills and fitness coach for many years, as well as a qualified nutritionist. Her skill set, and professional background adds a special flavour to their programs. Over and above her active involvement in skills coaching, she is also involved in the continued improvement of the skills programs, assisting with the bike set up as well as providing nutritional advice to parents.
SONGO.INFO BMX KIDS TAKING PART IN ELIMINATOR SERIES
This is also an opportunity for the Provinces to identify talent, and assist with development and transformation goals. It is difficult to identify a young rider’s potential if they participate in mass events with adults as their competitors. The focus is more on bike skills and therefore bunch track events on Mountain bikes were incorporated to allow the youth to develop their skills in a safe and secure environment, and at the same time, to give them the opportunity to watch and learn from the more experienced participants. It also provides cross-pollination of events and exposure to different cycling environments. The program will include a Road Race on 3 July at the Highgate Circuit, followed by a Team Time trial at the Highgate Circuit, and a Criterium race at Aurial College circuit on 4 July. On the final day, 5 July, a MTB Time trial and MTB Oval Track racing (1500m, Scratch and elimination races) will be held at the Quad Club.
“The first round of the Western Cape Eliminator Series took place at Zevenwacht Wine Estate on 14 May with ten Songo.info BMX kids taking part in this type of event for the first time. With BMX not in great demand in the Western Cape anymore, it forces managers to look at different events that BMX kids engage which fits with their riding and bike handling skills. The selected Songo.info kids competed across the U10, U12 and U14 categories with some racing on their BMX bikes, and others on some of the small MTB bikes. The Eliminator format is not too different from the BMX racing, it is a bit longer with more pedalling needed, a challenge the kids really enjoyed, and raced their hearts out. “Zizo rode brilliantly and won all his U14 runs, except the final. Another top performer was Milani who finished 3rd in the girls category. The rest of our kids had a great time with all of them making the semi-finals. They are all super motivated to practice, and now that they have a little more experience they are looking forward to the second and final round,” said Sipho Madolo, Sport programme manager.
The Youth Festival provides a strong healthy platform to develop riders into future cycling professionals such as Burry Stander and Louis Meintjes. Last year, Louis Visser, now riding for Dimension Data Continental Team, also took part in this event. Corné Bence, President of Eden Cycling, and organizer of the event said that the Oudtshoorn Youth Festival has shown a progressive growth and a high level of competition. REALTY
Now is the time for a Plan B in Europe! Cyprus also has the following lifestyle benefits:
1. Cyprus is economically stable and politically secure – the country is not flooded with refugees. 2. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. 3. The lifestyle is similar to South Africa: the golf courses are world-class, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and Cyprus has 57 blue-flag status beaches, the cleanest seas in the Med and a mountain-range where it snows for 3 months. 4. No inheritance tax: on your death you can dispose of your assets to your loved ones without having to pay any tax. This is advantageous for legacy planning. 5. There are no social problems in Cyprus: and because of this Cyprus has huge appeal as a destination for relocation, retirement, holiday-making and investment. Some other attractions that Cyprus offers are:
Securing a 2nd citizenship or permanent residency status in another country is something that many South Africans want to acquire. The main reason is a personal one: to assure their family’s future by implementing a tangible Plan B by protecting against political risk as well as economical instability.
a. Being an ex-British colony, there is no language barrier – everyone speaks English and all your documentation is in English. No need for a translator!
Europe is the world’s largest single market & global trading block and is still the most favoured destination for investors. The attraction of having unlimited access to the EU & the UK is where a 2nd citizenship in Europe has it’s merits. But the real benefits are being able to travel, live, work & study anywhere in the European Economic Area plus enjoy visa-free travel to many countries in the world.
c. Low cost of living;
Securing permanent residency status is also appealing because it gives the holders of the residence permit the legal right to live in that country without having to go through onerous immigration processes should they wish to make a permanent move.
b. The discovery of natural gas is already having a positive impact on foreign investment and infrastructural development; d. Euro-accredited education gives your children a distinct advantage when they enter the global job market; e. Europe on your doorstep: Cyprus has 2 International Airports and several marinas; f. 1st world medical facilities & affordable healthcare with highly qualified doctors & specialists.
There are a few countries in Europe offering the chance to secure a 2nd passport or permanent residency status, but the choice of where to invest can be daunting. Investors are advised to assess each programme to understand the minimum investment amount, the pre-requisites in terms of documentation, any travel limitations and all of the costs – both immediate and ongoing. Cyprus, an ex-British colony, full EU member and not part of Greece, currently has the most attractive 2nd citizenship plan on offer; as well as the best permanent residency programme available. Citizenship is granted in 3 months via Cyprus’ “Citizenship through investment” programme: - This is the quickest process in Europe; - The main investor, spouse, all dependent children up to 28 years of age; as well as the parents of the investor all qualify; - This is an investment – not a donation; - Property/ies CAN be rented out to earn a Euro-based income; - Property/ies only need to be kept for 3 years, where-after they can be sold as long as a property worth min €500k is retained; - Citizenship is passed down through descent offering a real legacy to future generations.
An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the “Citizenship through Investment” or the Fast Track residency programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your family for generations to come. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programmes are still open? Cypriot Realty – a proudly South African company in operation for nearly 9 years – can assist you.
We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative offPermanent Residency is granted in 4 – 6 weeks on the “Fast Track” programme. shore investment specialists, promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for - This is the only programme in Europe where LOGO3 generations in the same family acquiring EU citizenship or permanent (including both the parents & the parents-in-law) all acquire permanent residency, property investment, immiresidency by buying one property! gration or retirement and starting an - Dependent children up to 25 qualify; EU-based business - we understand investor’s needs. - Property can be rented out; - There is no requirement to live in Cyprus; nor be domiciled there for tax.

Trails In Motion Mountain Bike Film Festival South Africa Tour Set for Ster Kinekor
A successful launch of Trails In Motion Mountain Bike Film Festival at the Galileo Open Air Cinema Kirstenbosch in Cape Town in March, set the tone for the national tour of the film festival at selected Ster Kinekor Theatres around South Africa. The show kicked off in Centurion on 23 May. The Trails In Motion Mountain Bike Film Festival in partnership with Bike Hub and Ledlenser, then made its way to Sandton on 25 May, followed by Umhlanga on 1 June, Port Elizabeth on 8 June and Tyger Valley on 15 June. The inaugural Festival showcases 11 of the best mountain bike and adventure films, produced by some of the world’s top filmmakers, which have been carefully selected by the Trails In Motion team. “The films that make up our official selection have been chosen because of their diversity and rich story line,” says Festival Director James Hallett. “We believe that all riders revere their own individual sense of adventure when it comes to venturing outdoors and riding bikes and this year’s films truly encompasses this spirit of discovery and self-expression.” Matt Eagar, Founder of Bike Hub says that not only are the films epic, there’s something special about watching them on the big screen.

Inaugural Tour De Braai Lights Fire For Cycle Travel
One of the pioneering gravel riders on the Tour de Braai was elite South African mountain biker Erik Kleinhans, a man with multiple stage race wins under his belt, as well as being a former South Africa cross-country champion. On hearing about the Tour de Braai, Kleinhans was intrigued by the concept of a stage event where the main aim is to have fun. After four days of gravel riding and the best braai meals in South Africa, he’s convinced that this is the way forward for cycle touring. “It’s great to combine my favourite food pastime - braaing - with the sport that I love,” says Kleinhans. “It’s been amazing to be out in nature and cycling through such fantastic areas. Everywhere we have been is renowned for good food and stunning scenery; it’s made the Tour de Braai very special.” The idea behind the Tour de Braai is to showcase the incredible countryside of the Western Cape and to let people experience it on their bicycles in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. “Everyone has enjoyed the Tour highlights of the Montagu Pass, the port in Caltizdorp, riding up the Rooiberg Pass and braaing at the top, then crossing into the Overberg via the picturesque Garcia Pass. It’s fantastic to see people enjoying themselves on and off the bike and to show them parts of the country that are very special,” said Jan Braai.

From 7-12 May 20 cyclists with a taste for the finer things in life have been riding through the Western Cape, making their way from George to Swellendam via the most scenic district roads and mountain passes. The five-day ride was the inaugural Tour de Braai, brainchild of Jan Braai, the man behind the National Braai Day initiative and the National Braai Tour. Riders on the first Tour have come from all over South Africa, with one participant from Germany and another from Switzerland also dipping their toes into the braai and bike trek. The Tour de Braai started in George with overnight stops during the week including daily luxury accommodation and fine braai dining in Oudtshoorn, Calitzdorp, Riversdale before reaching their final destination in Swellendam.

German participant Ralf Stapela, from bicycle company Bergamont was riding his Bergamont Grandurance cyclocross bike. Many of the first-time Tour de Braai riders have taken to gravel bikes to participate in the Tour, another unique aspect of the experience. “It’s been amazing,” says Stapela. “The whole week has been very special, but especially the fourth day. It was a bit windy and cold, but the ride was an experience you won’t forget. I’m from Europe, so the conditions were perfect! I’m so glad I did it; I would definitely come back for more.” The first ever Tour de Braai concluded with the final ride, from Riversdale to Swellendam, with an en route lunch braai in Suurbraak. The next Tour de Braai will be from 5-11 November 2017.
GENERAL
Aspiring in Europe Much has been said back home about the fabled European Racing. The stories could be subjugated by anything from the “unbeatable” or “superhuman” racers to the strange culinary experiences offered by dodgy race accommodation – depending on who you ask.
Squirt Rider House Program Returns For 2017
One thing should be clear: European racing is darn hard. Whether you’re lining up for the Tour de L’Avenir (u23 Tour de France) or a local kermiskoers in an obscure Belgian town, you’re in for a tough time. How do you thrive in these tough conditions? There’s no way around it, you have to rack up miles and miles of racing in Europe. And that’s exactly what the LEADout Aspire boys are doing. A cornerstone of the team’s philosophy is to encourage its riders’ European ambitions. In the future, that would be supporting financial and administration aspects of our European campaigns. For now, the boys are slogging it out on their own in various club/team incarnations throughout Europe. Of course, being a bunch of 18 to 22-year-olds, we don’t know the first thing about organisation. That’s exactly where Barry Austin and the LEADout Academy come in. Thanks to the unwavering support and wise guru-like guidance from Barry, we find ourselves with all the right opportunities at the right places. Ivan Venter is returning to the Spanish racing scene in Galicia region for Rias Biaxas. On the other side of the country in Girona, Wian-David Slabbert is spending his time racing and sharing coffee rides with pros (the real deals).
For any Cross Country (XCO), Downhill (DHI), or Marathon (XCM) mountain biker, travelling to races is critical to gaining experience and developing race craft against bigger and better competition. Pitting oneself against other mountain bikers and showcasing your talent with the hopes of stepping onto a podium is what makes competitive mountain biking so exciting. But it can be a daunting and costly exercise. The team at Squirt understand this and, after the success of the Squirt Rider House Program over the past three years, will continue with the program in 2017. South African XCO mountain biker, Alan Hatherly will join the program for his third year in 2017. Another beneficiary of the Squirt Rider House Program is Swiss XCM Champion Ariane Lüthi. Ariane is known for her culinary skills, and regularly trades these for clean-up duties afterwards.
Photo: Aidan van Niekerk - Photo Credit: Desanlis Julie
Byron Munton is at the beating heart of all things bike racing in Belgium in the colours of Verandas Willems. Greg de Vink will be joining him shortly in June. Devin Shortt, the lone junior, heads to Spain and Italy after a successful 2016 Belgian stint. He’ll also link-up with the national junior squad for its European campaign. Morne van Niekerk and myself find ourselves in Martigues (France) racing the national calendar and sampling local pastries. Jarrod Hattingh will be joining us in a few months’ time (ready your legs and ready your palette, Jarrod!). Just a few months into our foreign season, some have already tasted success. Ivan has racked up numerous breakaway miles that have materialised in to a podium result. Morne has tasted victory no less than 4 times (one of which was in Spain) and secured a few more podiums. From a team perspective, we’re exploring possibilities to join forces and race in LEADout colours before we head home. As much as we’d like to celebrate our successes, there’s no shortage of suffering. The “European Experience” in all its glitz and glamour primarily consists of long training hours, even harder racing, and the struggles of trying to excel in a foreign country. However, knowing that a buddy is going through the same thing in the country next door is comforting. Most importantly, European life is made easier when you know what you’re aspiring to. Article by Aidan van Niekerk
South African mountain biker James Reid formed part of the 2015 and 2016 Squirt Rider House Programs and to him “it made a huge difference not only financially, but also in terms of ‘national spirit’. According to Squirt Director Dewet Marais, “Hatherly, along with fellow teammate Ariane Lüthi and well-known South African mountain bikers Robyn De Groot, Cherie Redecker, Stuart Marais, Gert Heyns, Matt Beers, Julian Jessop and Stefan Garlicki, will all be joining either The Squirt Rider Houses at the UCI XCO and DH World Cup races in Valnord, Lenzerheide and Val Di Sole or the UCI World Marathon Champs in Singen, Germany and we have also included houses at two European XTERRA Off-Road Triathlon events, where well-known South African triathletes Bradley Weiss & Theo Blignaut will be joining us.” Under the Squirt Rider House Program accommodation is supplied to riders free of charge, with the only cost to athletes being their travel and food. Squirt personnel also stay at the same venues and assist riders by coordinating travel arrangements and providing local knowledge. There is also an in-house official German language interpreter. Each of the athletes joining the program for 2017 are long-time Squirt sponsored athletes and product users. Squirt is a proudly South African company and the long-term vision of the program is to pave the way for a South African mountain biker to scale the podium at a World Cup and/or World Championship event. Squirt believes that the talent and ambition are there, and that it is just a question of enabling their hopefuls to fulfil their potential.

MARTIN DREYER HAD OTHER PLANS FOR THE 36ONE MTB
For many entrants The 36ONE MTB Challenge is a personal trial, a battle to see if they can ride the 361 kilometres. Some riders ride solo, others ride the long route with a teammate, while others race The 36ONE in relay teams of two or four, or racing the ‘short’ distance 180 kilometre option either on their own or as a team of two. Martin Dreyer had other plans for The 36ONE MTB Challenge 2017 held in and around Oudtshoorn on 21 April this year. 361 kilometres in one go was not quite far enough for the mad-cap adventurer, as he undertook to ride the loop twice; in so doing riding a massive 722 kilometres.
Martin started out steadily at 01h00 on Friday morning, with the intention of meeting up with a support vehicle every 100km. However, there was a miscommunication which meant that he only met the vehicle for the first time at the 150km mark from the starting point. By the time, he arrived at to the Rooiberg Pass, about 230km into his ride, he had run out of water once again and was forced to trudge up the pass in survival mode.
Once on the other side he refilled in Calitzdorp, and then the rest of the first lap proceeded without further incidents.
Martin reached Oudtshoorn at 11h00 on Friday night, 5 hours after the race had started for all the other entrants. After he had a quick 90 minute nap, he was back on the bike, but the sleep monsters started to hunt him down. He had to stop three times to sleep on the side of the road - in his cycling kit. Temperatures fell to 6 degrees Celsius in the early hours of Saturday morning and Martin said he had no need to set an alarm as he just shivered himself awake. As dawn set in he was close enough behind the last riders to refuel at the remaining water points thus enabling him to successfully ride to the finish. He arrived at 02h15 in the early hours of Sunday morning in Oudtshoorn. The final 36ONE finisher completed the race at 03h00 and Martin passed about 5 riders on his second loop with a time of 48 hours and 15 minutes. Martin said it was an amazing experience being able to watch two sun rises and sun sets from his bike without really stopping. “It’s not that difficult – you just have to pace yourself.”

MIRACLE CYCLIST TO ATTEMPT WORLD’S TOUGHEST SOLO RIDE
Lottering’s own story is living proof that when life takes a turn for the worse, you have a decision to make – do something with it or it will do something with you! In 2013, Grant Lottering survived a near-fatal cycling accident during a world championship preparation race in Trento, Italy, when he crashed into a rock embankment and suffered severe internal and external injuries. Doctors told him he would never cycle again, but Lottering refused to accept this prognosis, and decided he would return to the Alps in one year to finish the race that almost claimed his life. Thus, the Im’Possible tour series was born, with Lottering’s fourth solo attempt taking place on 2 July 2017.

96 hours is all miracle cyclist, Grant Lottering, has to conquer one of Europe’s toughest amateur cycling races 10 times!
In 2016, Lottering successfully completed his third Im’possible Tour, cycling 962km non-stop from Cannes to Les Saisies Ski Resort in the French Alps. He cycled over 20 alpine mountains, climbing 19 840m during the monster ride, completing the challenge in the unbelievable time of 46 hours 38 minutes. Public support was massive, with over 7 000 followers on social media tracking Lottering’s progress through the remarkable (and sleep-less) 48-hour challenge.
On 2 July 2017, Grant Lottering will attempt his 4th Im’possible Tour – a solo fundraising ride in the French Alps. Lottering, Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador and international speaker, also known as the ‘miracle cyclist’, will attempt to cycle over 40 mountains, climbing a staggering 44 700m, over a distance of 1800km, in under 96 hours, non-stop. For his Im’possible Tour IV, Lottering will return to the La Marmotte Granfondo, the same race where he completed his first Im’possible Tour in 2014, and try to complete the demanding route not once, not twice, but 10 times non-stop. At 174km and 5 000m of climbing, the La Marmotte is considered one of the toughest amateur events in the world and comparable to the most challenging high mountain stages of the Tour de France. Lottering takes on these annual solo ultra-endurance rides with the purpose of raising funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation who financially supports over 20 registered community projects country-wide. As a highly regarded public speaker, Lottering inspires audiences to recognise that their potential is unlimited and that we are all able to accomplish what others consider impossible so long as we truly believe and live our lives with purpose, commitment, focus and determination.

In 2017, Lottering hopes to double the funds raised for Laureus, with the help of a number of generous corporate partners. For more information visit www.grantlottering.com

CYCLING EVENTS
Historic Road Between George to Knysna - 7 Passes MTB 2017 “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best.” - Ernest Hemingway The 2017 edition of the 7 Passes MTB will start on the edge of the beautiful town of George, from Glenwood House School. Riders staying over in Knysna and joining the Garden Route Events team for the supported social cruise back to George the following day and can safely leave their cars at the start venue. The Glenwood House start will give riders official bragging rights for actually doing 8 passes at this year’s event, including the not so challenging Swartrivier Pass - near the view of Garden Route Dam wall. It was the legendary Thomas Bain who designed the road between George and Knysna in 1883. He experienced many challenges in the dense forest surrounds and also bumped heads with his brother-in-law, Adam de Smidt with whom he shared the contract. On completion of the road the two never spoke again. 7 Passes MTB also offers a shorter route for the younger or not so fit riders who still want to be part of the action at the Knysna Waterfront finish. The Leeuwenbosch Dairies sponsored 39km route starts on Saturday morning from the humble little village of Karatara. The start time for the shorter route leave approximately 10 minutes after the longer 79km leaders pass the second water point, located at the Highlands Cash Store and service station, halfway between George and Knysna. The route will challenge participants by crossing 10 rivers and 7 gorges between these two towns and pass through the quaint settlement of Rheenendal, home to the brief gold rush in the 1880’s. The final stretch into Knysna will lead riders along the N2 Knysna lagoon-side cycle-way to the finish at the Knysna Waterfront.
The supported social ride back to George the following day is an ideal opportunity to spin the legs after the previous days racing, to get to know each other and simply have a good time. Leaving the Knysna Waterfront participants will head up Phantom Pass through Rheenendal and back along the route ridden the previous day. Riders will be followed by a sweep vehicle and two water points will be set up for the occasional ‘tea break’. Included in the entry fee is a complimentary Garden Route Events shuttle which will transport rider kit bags back to George for those who overnighted in Knysna. Ride where Sylvester once roamed - Sylvester MTB Challenge Who would not like to ride where South Africa’s most famous lion, known as Sylvester, was born and roamed? SANparks’ Honorary Rangers is hosting a MTB event named after Sylvester, who went on a walkabout in the Karoo for just over three weeks. There will be 3 distances: 20 km fun ride, 42 km challenge and the 87 km Sylvester MTB Adventure. The vision is to eventually expand the event to a 3-day event covering 300 kilometres. when he escaped from the Park for the first time. During Sylvester’s three-week walkabout in the Karoo he covered over 370 kilometres, crossing a number of private properties - killing 28 sheep, a Nguni cow and a kudu along the way.
Also known as the “Place of Glory”, Kuzuko Lodge is built high upon a hill in a private section of the Northern part of the Greater Addo Elephant National Park.
After the escape, Sylvester was fitted with a satellite collar which also has a VHF component to find his location should he manage to get out again.
It is here where breath-taking views from the Chalet’s private veranda are complimented by luxurious interiors and warm, attentive service.
This collar alerted authorities on 28th March 2016 that the lion had once again left the park’s boundary, and played a big role in tracking him and returning him back to the park much quicker – three days later on 31st March.
Spectacular cosmic safaris, day and night game drives and bird watching are but a few of the ways in which guests can truly experience a unique and glorious place.
Sylvester was translocated to Addo Elephant National Park in May last year, and into the Kuzuko Contractual Area of the Park, where he has settled and established himself as the dominant male - in what conservationist’s hope will become a pride of four lions in the area. Sylvester was cared for and bonded into a coalition with another male by Gerhard de Lange, the Kuzuko Reserve General Manager. Sylverster was successfully released the 21st of January 2017. This experience will be shared by Gerhard at the prize giving ceremony after the race. The Honorary rangers played a major part in tracking Sylverster and all the proceeds of this event will be used to fund SANParksHonarary Rangers projects. According to Corne Botha of Jakhals Events, race organiser of the Sylvester MTB challenge, the event will be unique and exciting as mountain bikers will be riding through the areas where Sylvester, the Lion once walked.
