Grant Lottering, a South African cyclist has a remarkable story to share of courage, perseverance, survival and recovery. Three years ago, he was involved in a cycling accident that nearly cost him his life. Considered by most, to be a story of astounding recovery and incredible courage, he completed his third Im’possible Tour during August. Grant Lottering started cycling at the age of 12 and began racing when he was 14 years old. His dream was to cycle in Europe, to race as a professional, which he eventually did in the 80’s. His dreams were almost shattered in 2013 when he was involved in a cycling accident in the Italian Alps, that almost cost him his life. Lottering’s inspiring story began in 2013 during a 140 kilometres world championship preparation race in Trento, Italy, when he was involved in a cycling accident and crashed straight into a rock embankment.
Lottering, lucky to be alive, promised himself that he would return to finish the race he had started. In 2014 he was back on the bike for the first Im’Possible Tour titled, ‘From Death to the Top of the Alps in One Year.’
His heart stopped beating and he was unconscious by the time the medical team arrived.
The second Im’Possible Tour took place in 2015, in which Lottering became the first South African to attempt to complete a solo, non-stop 420km ultra-endurance ride through the French Alps in 24 hours.
After he was airlifted to hospital, the medics discovered the extent of his injuries - Collapsed lungs and thorax, 12 rib fractures, compound fractures of his lumber and cervical spine, two fractures of his right femur, multiple fractures of his scapula and clavicle, a crushed shoulder, a fractured sternum, extensive internal bleeding to his abdomen and spleen, ruptured arteries in his neck and right arm, acute respiratory failure and much more.

Starting in Frëjus near Cannes in France, he completed the grueling solo, non-stop ride at Les Saises Ski Resort with a ride time of 46 hours 17 minutes and a total lapsed time of 50 hours and 40 minutes. Lottering climbed 20 mountains in this epic journey with a total elevation of 19 410m. Lottering was allowed eight controlled stops along the route for eating, changing clothes, and getting lights to navigate in the dark. Throughout the ride he was followed by a film crew, two support cars and a support team of nine people.

During the Im’Possible Tour III which took place during August 2016, Grant Lottering achieved his goal of riding 1000km through the French Alps in less than 48 hours.
Lottering spent 8 days in ICU and another 8 days in high care, before he was flown back to South Africa where he spent four months recovering, undergoing no less than six surgeries and close to a 100 rehabilitation sessions. Doctors considered his extensive injuries too severe for him to cycle again.
“I believe we have all been blessed with unlimited potential. Set your own goals and don’t let others cast doubt on what you know you can achieve. With proper planning, focus, and belief in yourself, you can do anything you set your mind to,” Lottering concludes. Photos Courtesy: TrimaxMagazine

Bucket list trip! Himalayas - Ledakh ABOUT THE TOUR

A Bucket list trip to the Himalayas, Ledakh and Leh is, no ordinary holiday - but rather an expedition! This may well be the highest bike journey above sea-level in the world. Ten days of the route are above 4500m and an acclimatization period of at least 3 days are essential for this tour. The scenic beauty of this region is really something to remember. In the midst of open plains are blue lakes nestled between white glacial mountains. Over 90% of the population are Buddhists and a visit to the Taj Mahal is included in the package. Every MTB track, village, monastery, temple and palace that will be visited, leaves a lasting impression. Ledakh = little Tibet. Anybody who embarks on a trip to the Himalayas, should not only adjust themselves for the arrival into another country, but rather another world.

Val de Vie Welcomes 2017 Absa Cape Epic Grand Finale It came as a huge surprise to sporting enthusiasts when Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director of Val de Vie announced that the Estate renowned for its golf and polo are now adding cycling to their portfolio.
That seven kilometre haul rises nearly 400m, marking the last major climb of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic, then some twists and turns around Franschhoek and finally the Grand Finale finish line – and the much sought after finisher’s shirt – awaits at Val de Vie.
In the beginning of October, the lifestyle offering of the estate gained even more momentum when a 42km route through the Valley of Life, beautifully designed for mountain biking, running and horseback riding was introduced. The mountain bike routes will cater for beginners and advanced riders, and will stage thrilling obstacles including bridges, drop-offs, jumps and wall rides. Since its inception in 2006 Val de Vie has been transformed from a desolated piece of land to a Luxury Lifestyle Estate – living up to its name, meaning “Valley of Life”. Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Val de Vie certainly has an offering like no other estate in South Africa, where residents and guests are able to experience the finest that Western Cape has on offer in terms of natural beauty, spaciousness and an array of sporting activities including golf, polo and now cycling, cultural events and fine dining - all at one location. Val de Vie proposes various types and styles of units, all of which are designed and built to a high specification. Val de Vie has accomplished a number of milestones in the past year including the acquisition of Pearl Valley’s state-of-the art Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, and has been named the top residential estate in South Africa by New World Wealth rating the top 10 residential estates in South Africa annually, based on the following criteria: security, activities, facilities, quality and design of houses, space, views including scenery and wildlife, appealing to wealthy buyers, with resale and price growth potential. Other amenities on the estate include polo fields, an equestrian centre, sports & leisure centre, and many more surrounded by natural fynbos, scenery, parks, lakes and mountains.

DISCOVER THE JOY OF CYCLING
More exciting was the news received a day later at The 2017 Absa Cape Epic route launch in Cape Town that the race will finish for the first time at Val de Vie on the well renowned polo fields – playing host to the fourth Grand Finale in the race’s 14-year history. After leaving Oak Valley in Elgin, for stage 7, the finish at Val de Vie is just 85km away. The riders are advised to save some energy for the climb up the Franschhoek Pass after about 40km.

Amaury Sport Organisation General Manager Yann Le Moënner declared: “It seems like South African cycling is breaking away from the peloton these days: 2015 was already a historical year for Le Tour de France as it welcomed its first African team on board in MTN-Qhubeka (which has since been renamed “Team Dimension Data” and “Dimension Data for Qhubeka”). With Tour de France 2013, 2015 and 2016 winner Chris Froome having spent years and been introduced to cycling in South Africa as well as numerous teams traveling to South Africa for their winter training and a major sponsor in Dimension Data partnering with Le Tour de France since 2015, the cycling planet has recognized South Africa as a land of cycling.

The West Coast offers the freshest seafood straight from the boats with stories of passionate people. Blue seas and white sandy beaches are typical of the Garden Route, in contrast with magnificent mountain passes, wide-open landscapes, and quiet roads of the Karoo and Klein Karoo. An array of fynbos, birdlife and Nature Reserves in the Overberg, surround the cyclist, while cycling in the midst of world-class vineyards, through farms overpowered by the beautiful setting of Cape Dutch manor homes, and even sipping award-winning wine, forms part of a true Cape Winelands experience. For the first time in history, South African cycling enthusiasts will be offered the excitement of Le Tour de France; we are proud and happy of this new grand premiere!” Further information on L’Etape South Africa 2017, including entry details and the race route will be announced in November.

Coronation Double Century Route Access for 2016 The 24th Coronation Double Century team cycle event will take place on the traditional route on Saturday, 26 November 2016 when 250 teams of up to 12 riders each will cycle 202km around the Overberg towns of Swellendam, Montagu, Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale. Although a section of the traditional event route is still under construction, the CDC organisers have secured access to the roads for the duration of the event. Following extensive discussions and negotiations between the CDC organisers, Provincial Government, the road contractors Basil Reed and local Swellendam authorities, and Minister Donald Grant and his team in the Provincial Department of Transport for their assistance and co-operation in facilitating the discussions that have led to the securing of the route.
Last Over the Line with the Sweeps The last man over the line on stage 1 of the 2016 Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush was Namibian visitor Otto Alfleld. His ride partner, Andrea Stier, was beaming after her first dig at the event. Otto was not. That might have had something to do with his seven hour-plus finish time, or that his entry was a birthday present he wasn’t quite expecting. The emotions on the finish line for team StierKampf were decidedly mixed, but Otto still managed the universal sign that all is not lost - a thumbs up. “I think Otto maybe did not enjoy it as much, but he will recover soon enough. He started getting cramps and that just ruined his ride. The trails were awesome, though, and the singletrack was great fun,” said Andrea Stier. The pair was last over the line with the sweeps. At mountain bike events around the county sweeps provide a valuable, often thankless task. The Berg & Bush was no different, with Mark and Kevin Christie from Subaru Pietermaritzburg providing the service once again at the Descent.

“In an effort to ensure that safety of all participants is prioritised, we have had to meet and satisfy all concerns around risk mitigation and safety in taking a cycling event of this nature through a construction site,” says David Bellairs, a director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust (CTCTT). “As such, an extended neutral zone will be implemented as a safety measure on the stretch of road between Montagu and the feed zone in Ashton. A strict speed limit will be implemented and timing mats will be deployed at the start of the construction area and the Ashton feed zone. Any cyclists exceeding the prescribed max speed through the area will receive a 30 minute time penalty for their team.” Bellairs advises those wishing to participate in the 24th Coronation Double Century, to acquaint themselves with the changes for this years event, as they will need to accept the conditions under which the 2016 event will be held, including the extended neutral zone which will include a 400-500m graveled section of road.” The Coronation Double Century is a Pedal Power Association event organised by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust on their behalf.

PLACE 4 RIDERS IN TOP 20 AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2016 UCI World Road Race Championships concluded with the elite men’s 257km road race. Defending champion, Peter Sagan (Slovakia) was able to retain his crown and sprinted to victory just ahead of our very own Mark Cavendish (Team Dimension Data) and Tom Boonen (Belgium) placed 3rd.

“There were not too many hassles today,” said Kevin. One lady fell and had a collar bone issue, while another of the slower teams bailed at the final water point. We had a pretty good day. Sweeping isn't for everyone. You need to have patience and enjoy riding. We’ve done this for a few years now and we enjoy it.” Team StierKampf, the part that was in a mood to talk at least, was grateful for the Christies efforts. “The guys were really great. They were just behind us encouraging us to the finish the whole way. I really appreciated their company, they are absolutely legends.” All in all, the first stage was a good one for the 954 riders at the Berg & Bush Descent. The field was eclectic and featured a stellar line-up of the best local pros to husband and wife teams.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka were proud to have no less than 16 riders take the start in Doha this all ready to represent their respective nations. As racing got underway it was riders from the African Team that really lit up the race. Nic Dougall (South Africa) was joined by Natnael Berhane (Eritrea) in an attack after just 3km of racing. As the lead group made its way up the Arabian Gulf, the peloton was happy to give them a good gap. Mark Cavendish’s Great Britain squad controlled the gap from the front of the main bunch. It was a unique situation to have riders from the African Team really dictating the pace of the race from both ends. As expected the soaring temperatures and typical Qatari crosswinds would play a huge role in the race and the race defining moment came with 175km still to go. Cavendish was on song, despite a nasty crash in training, and he made the 29 rider front split. The African Team also had Edvald Boasson Hagen in this group, representing his Norwegian squad. Coming into Doha and entering the 15km finishing circuit, it was just the 2 reduced groups that remained in contention and they were separated by 1 minute. From the African Team’s perspective, they couldn’t have been happier with having 4 of our riders in the leading group - Cavendish, Boasson Hagen, Dougall and Berhane.
Photo: Nic Dougall Photo Credit: Jens Herrndorff
When the bell lap was reached, just 21 riders remained. The sprint finale was a bit messy and Cavendish initially had the wheel of Sagan, but he crossed the line first with Cavendish 2nd, Edvald Boasson Hagen was 6th, Natnael Berhane was 13th and Nic Dougall placed 18th. The African Team placed 4 riders in the top 20 of the World Championships. For the first time ever Africa also had 2 top 20 finishers at the World Championships Elite road race. Congratulations to Nic Dougall representing South Africa. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka 2016 season came to an end with the final stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour when Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory, thanks to a perfect leadout by the African Team.

YOUTH & JUNIORS
“Race Your Heart Out And You Will Achieve Greatness! ”
Top Teams Crowned
At 2016 Spur Schools Mtb League Finals
This is precisely what Louis Visser, junior cyclist from Oudtshoorn has accomplished in 2016. Not only did he experience great success in local and international events, but he was also selected to form part of the South African Junior road team, representing South Africa in two road races in Europe. Louis started his cycling career at the age of twelve when he took part in a few fun rides where he was spotted by Eden Cycling’s president, Corné Bence. The Eden Sport Academy has played an important role in his cycling endeavours and has provided him with a good foundation and support structure. His first breakthrough came when he was invited by LEADout Cycling Academy under the management and mentorship of Barry Austin to accompany a junior team to Europe in 2015, participating in UCI and classified events in Belgium, Austria, France and Germany. LEADout Cycling Academy managed several professional cyclists during their junior and U23 careers and also remained involved as mentors of several athletes like Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg, Jaco Venter, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Louis Meintjes and Johann van Zyl, to name a few. After Louis’ European tour with LEADout he came back highly motivated and started training with LEADout’s Barry Austin. For the first time he was introduced into a training program with long term goals. “Barry has been instrumental in my development as a cyclist. He provided me with a proper training programme, but even more important, insight into what it takes to be a cyclist,” says Louis.
A record Spur Schools Mountain Bike League season, which saw more than 10 500 kids competing across South Africa, culminated in a nail biting final in Magaliesburg during October. With 438 mountain bike riders representing 84 schools all chasing points and the coveted title of Spur Schools Mountain Bike League champion. Reigning Gauteng League champions, Menlo Park pulled out all the stops to win the boys’ and mixed team trophies and walked off with the coveted title of National Spur Schools Mountain Bike League Champions. Only one point separated the second and third boys’ teams with Grey College second and Paul Roos Gimnasium third. Parel Vallei High School secured second place in the mixed team category. The girls’ team from Potchefstroom Gimnasium were crowned national girls champions with Menlo Park High School taking second place and Midstream College claiming third. Spur Steak Ranches handed a R10 000 contribution to school teams that won their respective age categories at the National Inter-Schools Finals. The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League is affiliated to South African Schools Cycling (SASC), which in turn is affiliated to Cycling SA as a development initiative particularly geared to create a platform for schools to compete against each other and, in doing so, raise the profile of the sport at school level.
Louis’ performance the past year was outstanding. He won the 2015 Western Cape MTB Marathon Championships, took second place in the Western Cape Road Championships, third place in the Western Cape Time trial Championships, second junior in the Herald Cycle Tour, seventh place in the SA Road Championships and sixth in the SA Time trial Championships. Louis Visser’s quest to become a professional cyclist has received a boost when he was invited to race in Spain for Ciclista Club Colindres from June to August this year. Louis found himself amongst a handful of South African cyclists conquering the roads of Europe! During his stay in Europe he competed in 11 races, 7 one day and 4 multi day races including The Vuelta al Besaya, one of Spain’s premier junior cycling events. The highlight of his tour was winning the last two races and achieving a sprinters jersey in one of the multi-day races. During his tour in Spain he also represented the South African Junior road team in two road races in Luxenborg and Belguim. The 5-day Tour of Good Hope and the Cape Town Cycle Tour has been a highlight to Louis, not only because of the good results he achieved, but rather the opportunity to start and race against the country’s best road cyclists. The Tour of Good Hope placed him in 35th overall place, 13th in the U/23, and first as a Junior. Louis best performance up to date and a highlight in his career was the XXXVIII Andra Mari Sari Nagusia race in Igorre, Spain on 15 August 2016 where he won the race. On the local scene, he was 1st in the category for Juniors and 36th overall completing the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour in 02:39:00 – only 3 minutes 08 seconds behind the winner. Louis who is still a junior until the end of the year, will focus on his transition from a junior to a U/23 rider. In 2017 he will be competing in the SA Road and Time Trial Championships in February, followed by the Tour of Good Hope, Cape Town Cycle Tour and the ABSA Cape Epic in March and the possibility to return to Europe to race is already on the cards. “If you aspire to be the best at what you do, you need to train like the best and race against the best.” Get inspired by this young rider and visit www.louisvisser.co.za

The schools also teamed up for the SASC Interprovincial Competition whereby the best 10 results got tallied to crown the best province. Defending champion North West Province successfully defended their title as provincial champion, Gauteng finished second, followed by Western Province in third place.
Interprovincial Youth Festival Platform For Young Cyclists
There are not many road events in which the youth can participate, and the interprovincial Youth Festival in Oudtshoorn, hosted by Western Cape Cycling during October 2016 gave young cyclists the perfect opportunity to compete and achieve excellent results. The festival once again allowed riders under the age of 18 to participate against other riders in the country with similar cycling abilities. As the younger age groups are no longer taking part in the SA National Championships, they are still given a platform to improve their skills on the bike. The Youth Festival focuses predominantly on teams and provinces, not the individual rider. The sporting event also aims to assist provinces throughout the country with transformation and development goals. The youth Festival started with a combined road race - the annual Pennypinchers Cycle Tour, a seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, hosted by Eden Cycling. A total new concept was adopted with only the road race taking place on public roads. The rest of the week consisted of a criterium race, team time trial on a closed circuit, oval track racing and a Cross Country Olympic event. The event that drew the most attention was the oval track racing that took place on a 500m dirt stock car track. The racing was done on a mountain bike and 3 events similar to track racing was held on the oval track: a short bunch race, a scratch race and an elimination race. This type of racing is not only spectator friendly, but teaches bunch skills in a safe environment and without the pressure of riding a track bicycle with a fixed cog and no brakes. The overall competition was of a high standard and the Commissaires and timers were kept very busy on the line. During the week each rider received points per event that was added to provide a winner in every age category. The team with the most points was awarded, irrespective of age. The Chairman of Western Cape Cycling Corné Bence expressed his gratitude towards those riders and managers who made the effort to come and participate in this event.

After completing his first Sani2C in 2006, avid mountain biker Johan Kriegler had a desire to stage a similar multi-stage race in the Western Cape. At the same time Stillwater Sports, a leading lifestyle sports agency in South Africa since 2000, with an expanded event capacity and commercial expertise, was looking to establish a world class multi day MTB event. Hendrico Burger brought Stillwater Sports and MTB Adventures together, and after nearly a year of planning, the W2W MTB Events was born under the directorship of Michael Meyer, Dezroy Poole, Johan Kriegler and Hendrico Burger.
Every year this team guides the event, with the goal of continuous improvement, to establish the W2W as the leading MTB stage race in the world.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING AT W2W SINCE THE START IN 2009? The W2W events experienced a tremendous increase in entries, added some new race categories, developed several new trails and a multitude of route upgrades from the first race back in 2009.
2014 - Cape Trails, the official route builders of the FNB W2W MTB Events, took ownership of their new Specialized mountain bikes compliments of the event organizers and Specialized South Africa. The Adventure, Race and Ride attracted a field 1 300 riders (per event), with over 600 riders on the waiting list. 2015 - The organizers of the FNB W2W MTB Events together with Cape Pine and Cape Trails, opened the latest addition to the 2015 FNB W2W MTB route, the A-2-Z Trail in Grabouw to the public. The Adventure, Race and Ride attracted a field of 1 300 riders (per event), with over 876 riders on the waiting list. The new Wildekrans Trail was introduced at the event. 2016 - FNB W2W event organizers purchased a property in Grabouw for Cape Trails, the official route builders of the FNB W2W MTB Events. Cape Trails members, Ashwell Swartz moved into the house, while Denzel Scheepers moved into the flat.

2009 - The inaugural W2W 3-day Race took place in November and started at Tri-Active in Elgin. The race attracted 300 riders with the first race village established at the De Rust Futura School in Elgin. The new Schapenberg MTB Trails, funded by Pedal Power Association (PPA) was introduced at the event. 2010 - By 2010 word of the W2W Race had been well received, and, to the delight of the organizers a spectacular field of 1 100 riders signed up to be part of the second years’ experience with over 300 riders on the waiting list. The 2010 race village was moved to the Elgin Grabouw Country Club. The New Paul Cluver & extended Thandi MTB Trails (partly funded by PPA) was introduced at the event. 2011 - This spectacular overnight growth spurt, resulted in the event organizers splitting the field in 2011 with the introduction of the W2W Adventure. By hosting two events, the Event Organizers could give more mountain bikers the opportunity to be part of the W2W experience. Both the 2011 W2W Adventure and W2W Race attracted a field of 850 riders (per event) with over 500 riders on the waiting list. The new Molteno Trail was introduced at the event.
The Adventure, Race and Ride has attracted a field 1 300 riders (per event), with over 815 riders on the waiting list. The new Eikenhof and Karwyderskraal Trails will be introduced at the event. Prize Purse - The organizers of the FNB W2W MTB Events are excited to announce that the prize purse for the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Race has increased to an impressive R407 500.00. “We are proud to increase the prize purse of the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Race,” says Michael Meyer, FNB W2W MTB Director. “The increase is sure to elevate the caliber of racing by attracting professional riders both locally and from Photo: Christoph Sauser abroad.” To add to the excitement, the overall men’s and women’s prize has been increased from R65 000.00 to R100 000.00, while prize money has also been allocated to age group riders. This will be the highest prize purse that the FNB W2W MTB Race has offered to date. According to Swiss mountain bike legend, Christoph Sauser, prize money is crucial in supporting the career of a professional mountain biker. “It is great to see that the FNB W2W MTB Events are honoring the pros. I am certain that they won’t be disappointed in getting awesome racing in return.”
2012 - The race village moved one more time. The picturesque Oak Valley Wine Estate in the Elgin/Grabouw area became home to the riders for the 3-day event, with both the Adventure and Race a field of 1 100 riders (per event), with over 500 riders on the waiting list. The new Hermanus Trail was introduced at the event. 2013 - The W2W Event Organizers welcomed an exciting new title sponsor, FNB to the annual event. Due to popular demand, the Event Organizers initiated a third event during the week between the “Adventure,” and the “Race,” called the “Ride.” The “Adventure” and “Race” attracted a field 1 300 riders (per event), while 660 riders took part in the “Ride,” with over 600 riders on the waiting list. The new Paul Cluver Bike Park was introduced at the event.
“Last year the FNB W2W MTB Event Organizers increased the prize purse for the women’s teams. This was an incredible move to provide equity within the sport,” says current National Marathon Champion Robyn De Groot. “This year they continue to make waves by increasing the prize purse for professional racing teams. As a professional athlete, a healthy prize purse is something that we always appreciate and are extremely grateful for.” Starting in the Winelands of Somerset West at Lourensford Wine Estate, riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, 6 mountains, historic roads and mountain passes, nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus! WINES2WHALES
BUILDING THE WINES2WHALES ROUTES Martiens Scheepers and his team built the initial Schapenberg Trails in 2009. During the 2009 route-building days these route builders cycled the W2W routes over the weekend on broken bicycles, without brakes just to experience the challenges of some of their trails. During that same period, it wasn’t always possible to arrange transport for the route builders to and from the trail sites. A close friend at King’s Cycles in Worcester identified a key customer who had four basic aluminum mountain bikes and two helmets that he was willing to trade for a W2W entry. Two additional helmets were obtained from another friend after which the FNB W2W Trail Building Team was able to cycle to the trail sites. The Team By 2010 W2W was finally in a position to properly fund trail building. Four previously unemployed youth from Grabouw were assisted in starting a Trail Building enterprise, contracting their services to W2W - today known as Cape Trails. These trail builders build and maintain mountain biking trails throughout the year.
New and existing Routes
Martiens son Denzel, Denzel’s nephew Ashwell, and Brendon were part of Cape Trails partnership since 2010. In 2012 Murzon, Denzel’s brother left and Jason Adams joined the Cape Trails.
On average these trail builders each cycle 50km a day and build the trail from 08h00 to 16h30. It is difficult to determine how many kilometers track they build per day as the difficulty varies. On easy flat terrain with minimal vegetation, the builders complete about 1km a day.
W2W facilitated a Continual Service Improvement (CSI) process involving Martiens, who has since established Martiens Scheepers Conservancy (Pty) Ltd. The company employs 25 people and perform alien clearance on contract for the Arabella Hotel and SPA, Groenlandberg Conservancy and individual farmers.
In comparison, a special feature like ‘Die Kontoer’, a newly constructed contour against a steep cliff in Oak Valley Wine Estate, required 30 x 2m steel poles and 150 x 2m tar poles to create a retainer wall against the cliff to support the track. The filling of the track with soil over a distance of 400m took over 4 months to complete.
In 2014 Cape Trails received ownership of their new Specialized mountain bikes with the compliments of the organizers of the FNB W2W MTB Events and Specialized South Africa.
Johan Kriegler, FNB W2W MTB Director, decides where new routes will add magic by listening to rider and landowner feedback, walking the mountains, exploring Google Earth options, within a MTB mind’s looking for fun, interesting, scenic, safe and not too difficult trails. After approval by a landowner, all tools are moved to the new site where after it becomes Cape Trails’ new ‘Pad Kamp’ until they have finished the track.
Initially the W2W route changed a lot, but recently only slight changes are implemented. At this point the route builders make smaller adjustments, and in future will perform more alien clearance and nature conservation. Cape Nature plays an overseeing role in observing that the W2W events comply to a pre-determined nature conservation criteria, before, during and after the events. A key FNB W2W MTB objective is to continuously develop the W2W routes, creating and maintaining MTB Trails that are scenic, safe and adventurous. Some sections of the W2W routes are exclusive and not open to the public or other events. Some sections of the Grabouw MTO Trails, Oak Valley, Paul Cluver, Wildekrans and Hermanus Trails are open to the public. Over the past seven years these routes have become legendary within the mountain biking community. “Each year it is our mission to increase the scenic level of our routes, while raising the fun bar,” says Johan Kriegler, FNB W2W MTB Director. A structure such as Pofadder (a 100m wooden trail structure that runs between cliffs and a waterfall) has become infamous amongst riders, locally and internationally. In 2014 W2W celebrated the opening of the spectacular Amphi Bike Park at Paul Cluver. Dr Cluver has always had a passion for wood work and creative ideas. He co-opted Anton Potgieter, who is well known for his eco-bridges in South Africa, to oversee the construction of the Pedal Power Association (PPA) swing, Raka, Slangpark, the resurrection of Pofadder and Witklippieskloof. WINES2WHALES FOUR FOUNDING DIRECTORS Michael Meyer “Stillwater Sports was very excited to launch the W2W in 2009,” says Meyer. “In the initial stages of a mountain bike race, when the early decisions are being made, it is very important to have a strong sports marketing influence.” Dezroy Poole Dezroy oversees the logistical elements of the three events. He has fulfilled the role of Race Director for some of South Africa’s mass participation events. His time as a school teacher and former triathlon team manager for South Africa at two Olympic Games helps greatly in that regard. Hendrico Burger
TEAM REEDS SET TO RIDE4SMILES Reeds Motor Group will support Operation Smile South Africa at the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Events. One in 700 children in South Africa is born with a cleft lip and/or palate. Operation Smile South Africa provides free surgeries to repair a cleft lip, a cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe. “In addition to free surgeries, we also seek to build long-term sufficiency in resource poor environments,” says Sean Robson, Communications Coordinator of Operation Smile South Africa. “Operation Smile trains doctors and local medical professionals in its partner countries, empowering them to treat their local communities and help others around the world. Operation Smile also donates medical equipment and supplies and provides year-round medical treatment through its worldwide centers.” Team Reeds 1 Ride4Smiles will take part in the FNB W2W MTB Ride 7 – 9 November 2016 and will consist of Johan Louw and Shaun Peters. According to Louw, every child should have the right to smile. “I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with my good mate Shaun, in support of this worthy cause. FNB W2W is a must do event. I love the fantastic trails, food, race village and vibe.”
Burger is the Technical Race Director of all three events. He is responsible for route management including: route marking, safety (medics, doctors, sweeps, VOC and so on), management of venue layouts and race village build up. He also liaises with local authorities like SAPS and fire departments. Johan Kriegler Doing the Sani2C 10 years ago Kriegler had a revelation - “why do Capetonians go through all this hassle to get there while we have more mountains, fynbos and sea?” He says it took him two years to figure out an interesting route from Somerset West to Hermanus.
NEW HOME FOR FNB W2W MTB ROUTE BUILDERS
The organizers of the FNB W2W MTB Events have recently purchased property in Grabouw for Cape Trails, the official route builders of the FNB W2W MTB Events. According to the event organisers, purchasing a house for Cape Trails has been a goal for over four years. The route builders from Cape Trails are hard workers that have a passion for mountain biking. They cycle to and from work every day, covering a distance of ±13 000km on their Specialized mountain bikes each year. In December last year Ashwell’s home burnt down destroying everything that he owned. This highlighted the need for decent housing for the trail building team.
Photo L - R: Denzel Scheepers, Brendon Booysen and Ashwell Swartz of Cape Trails in front of their new home
Situated in the town of Grabouw, the house is near all the major shops and is in a safer location. It’s a double plot with a two bedroom house and a one bedroom flat on it. Ashwell Swartz has moved into the house, while Denzel Scheepers has moved into the flat. Future plans include building two more dwellings on the second plot for remaining Cape Trails members, Jason Adams and Brendon Booysen. For now Jason and Brendon have made it clear that they are still happy living with their parents. Both Ashwell and Denzel will pay rent, the amount will be similar to what they’ve paid for their previous accommodation. Depending on how well they look after their new homes, the long term goal is to work out title transfer arrangements with each of the Cape Trails members. “Being part of the FNB W2W MTB Events has changed our lives for the best,” says Ashwell Swartz of Cape Trails. “When my Wendy House burnt down it broke me. I tried to remain optimistic, hoping that a better opportunity would arise. It is difficult to describe the impact that the Directors of the FNB W2W MTB Events have made on our lives. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to us.” “We are proud to be part of the event team.”

Team Reeds 2 Ride4Smiles will be gunning for a podium position at the FNB W2W MTB Adventure 4 – 6 November 2016 and will consist of multiple SA mountain bike champion, Erica Green and former SA Sub Vet XCO Champion Phelia Burger. “We are really proud to support Operation Smile South Africa,” says Green. “Repairing a cleft lip and/or palate seems to be a relatively simple procedure, but the huge impact that it has on each beneficiary is life-changing. Our goal at the FNB W2W MTB Adventure will be to raise as much awareness as possible and hopefully draw people towards this beautiful charity.”
ELGIN ROUND TABLE SUPPORTS HOST OF CHARITIES
Known by many mountain bikers for their water point activations and marshal support at the FNB W2W MTB Events, the Elgin Round Table is a proud supporter of numerous charities within the Elgin/Grabouw area including two Old Age Homes, the ACVV Dienssentrum Meals On Wheels Project, Speelland Pre-School and Elgin Drummies to name just a few. Started in 1952, the main aim of the Elgin Round Table is to enjoy fellowship with people from all walks of life, while organising fund raising events and community activities. “We’ve been involved with the FNB W2W MTB Events since its inception,” says Wessel Steyn, Elgin Round Table Secretary.

“We man the water points in the Elgin/Grabouw area and also provide marshals to assist with the event activations on route. We love being part of the event as we get to interact with people from outside areas.” “At the same time we are also able to generate funds that can be utilized towards worthwhile projects such as the ACVV Dienssentrum Meals On Wheels Project.” Started in August 2012, the ACVV Dienssentrum Meals On Wheels Project supplies meals to the elderly community of Grabouw. “We supply cooked meals three times per week,” says Freda Pieters, Service Centre Organiser at the ACVV Dienssentrum Meals On Wheels Project. “The support received from the Elgin Round Table helps to make this service possible.” The elderly community is also directly involved with the FNB W2W MTB Events. They cook the potatoes and butter the bread for the water points that are managed by members of the Elgin Round Table. The direct involvement is good for the members as they feel that they make a difference.

HELDERBERG ROTARY READY FOR STAGE ONE
As part of its fund raising program, the Rotary Club of Helderberg will be seen in action manning water points and providing marshal support on route during Stage One of the FNB W2W MTB Adventure, Ride and Race. The Rotary Club of Helderberg was founded in 1983 and has been involved with the FNB W2W MTB Events for four years. “Our main function is to serve the community,” says Brian van der Grijp, President of the Rotary Club of Helderberg. “Our work with W2W enables us to provide funds to various charities including our chief project which is the Bizweni Centre for Children with Disabilities.” Situated in Somerset West, the Bizweni Centre for Children with Disabilities was established in 1998. The Centre is a Special Educational Day Care Centre providing quality education, therapy and care for children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, downs syndrome and spina bifida. According to Vicky Hinrichsen, Bizweni Centre Project Manager, the school would not have been able to grow and develop to where it is today without the incredible buildings. “The Rotary Club of Helderberg doesn’t just hand over donations, but continues to take an interest in the program as a whole, including its impact on the community and sustainability of the project. Visiting overseas Clubs have been brought to visit the Centre and through this wheelchairs have been donated and money raised to equip the new program.”
HERMANUS ROTARY ENCOURAGES HIGH SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT AT FNB W2W MTB EVENTS The Rotary Club of Hermanus, together with the learners of the Hermanus High School, is counting down the days to the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Events. Forming part of Rotary International, the Rotary Club of Hermanus was founded in 1948 and is committed to service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership in the community. According to Johan Augustyn, Hermanus Rotary Club Treasurer, most Rotary activities fall within six general areas: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, aiding mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies. “We started working with W2W in the event’s second year,” says Augustyn. “We offer marshall support and manage the water point s during Stage Three of the Adventure, Ride and Race. The W2W is also one of our major fundraising events.” “The Rotary Club of Hermanus gives a substantial monthly donation towards our soup kitchen and food parcels for needy families,” says Anneke Harms,Teacher and Grade 12 Head at the Hermanus High School. “Approximately twenty of our learners are granted the opportunity to work with the Rotary Club at the annual FNB W2W MTB Events. The learners assist with the water points and on route marshalling. They enjoy being outdoors, watching the bikers and being part of the events. They learn how to be of service, while improving both their people skills and problem solving techniques. They enjoy every minute of their involvement.”
HELDERBERG SUNRISE ROTARY CELEBRATES SIX YEARS WITH FNB W2W
Affectionately known as the vehicle transport experts, this year the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club will celebrate its 6th anniversary with the FNB W2W MTB Events. According to Clive Reed, Treasurer of the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club, the club’s 55 members are passionate about service to their community and boast high ethical standards. “Although a young club, Helderberg Sunrise has a proven track record in achieving success in many community projects. We enjoy being part of the FNB W2W MTB Events. “We transfer the vehicles of competitors. Each event has 50 plus members, family and friends moving vehicles from Lourensford Wine Estate to Oak Valley Wine Estate, Oak Valley Wine Estate to Onrus Caravan Park and lastly, Lourensford Wine Estate to Onrus Caravan Park. We ensure that the mountain bikers have access to their vehicles at all times during the event.” The Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club puts the funds generated through its involvement with the FNB W2W MTB Events to good use by supporting a number of admirable projects including Go for Gold and Masikhule. “Our involvement with FNB W2W has also allowed us to fund smaller once off projects,” continues Reed. “Over the last two years we have donated funds to Lebanon Community Trust to purchase bicycles and to the Botriver School Bicycle project.” “We helped an old age home, Huis Jan Swart enclose their patio, worked with Masincedane Community Trust to create a Wellness Centre in Lwandle, supported Rotary Youth Services and many more.” Founded in 1999 through collaboration between the private sector, the Western Cape Department of Education and civil society, Go for Gold is an award-winning ‘education-to-employment public -private initiative. According to Karen Rademeyer, Fundraising and Communications Manager of Go for Gold, Helderberg Sunrise Rotary’s donations help toward Go for Gold’s Individual Student Sponsorships which affords underprivileged youth in Grade 11 and 12 to be part of Phase 1 of the 4 Phase Education-to-Employment programme. “Currently Helderberg Sunrise Rotary are supporting 7 learners’ Individual Student Sponsorships and to date have donated over R250 000 to our cause.” “Go for Gold are very grateful for the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary’s dedication and passion for our cause in providing graduate professionals to the built environment in South Africa.” Founded in 2005, Masikhule trains women from impoverished communities of the Helderberg in Early Childhood Development, enabling them to effectively educate and nurture pre-school children and provide them with the foundation for life-long learning.
W2W SUPPORTS CHARITY The FNB W2W MTB Events firmly believes in community upliftment through sport. The following charities lie close to the hearts of our event organizers and therefore receive support from the FNB W2W MTB Events: Songo.info (a charity focusing on bringing sport to the Kayamandi township of Stellenbosch) and local community programmes en-route including Hermanus Rotary Club, Helderberg Rotary, Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club, Elgin Round Table, De Rust Futura School, Botriver School, Cape Leopard Trust, Cape Trails, Lebanon Creche and Trust and the Botriver Educational Foundation.
“WE SAY, THANK YOU!” “We are privileged to be able to work with the cream of the crop when it comes to sponsors,” says Michael Meyer, FNB W2W MTB Director. “Not only are our sponsors passionate about the FNB W2W, but they are passionate about the lifestyle that it represents.” “Representing exceptional brands, we trust that together with the aid of our sponsors the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Adventure, Ride and Race will be a memorable experiences likened to no other.”

Cycling Tours
Cycle Tours in Cyprus
experiencing the charm and beauty of racing in The Med A growing number of cyclists are wanting to expand their horizons and experience cycle tours & races in other countries – and Cyprus, an ex-British colony, full member of the EU and not part of Greece, has not only a variety of tours / challenges available, but offers the perfect weather for cycling. The island is located in the Eastern part of The Med and the climate offers a wonderful combination of sea, beaches and mountains plus all of the exciting challenges that are a must in any avid cyclist’s diary.
There are a number of other reasons why Cyprus is so appealing 1. No language barrier: Cyprus is an ex-British colony, so everyone speaks English. The road signs are in English, your telephone accounts and municipality rates accounts are in English; and you feel right at home. 2. Strong economy: Cyprus’ economy is booming with increased foreign investment pouring into the country. They are on a massive infrastructural drive building new marinas, a casino and new golf courses. And Paphos (the province on the West of the island similar to the Western Cape) is The Capital of Culture for 2017. They are expecting more than 1,6Million additional tourists coming to Paphos alone next year. 3. Politically stable: Cyprus is a democratically elected government and has a president with a zero tolerance on bribery and corruption. 4. Incredible lifestyle: You have every modern convenience coupled with incredible outdoor living, a plethora of outdoor activities and loads to do. Being on the cusp of The Med means travelling across to Europe and the UK quick and cheap. 5. Culture like RSA: With gorgeous outdoor walks, nature reserves, golf estates and open spaces – you will feel right at home. There are plenty of expats who have moved to Cyprus to make it their new home. 6. Very advantageous tax benefits:
Having one of the mildest climates in Europe, temperatures in Cyprus range between 15°C and 25°C between October and April; and the strong headwinds that are an irritation to cyclists are rare here. Cyprus combines attractive beaches with pine-clad peaks, busy modern cities and tranquil old stone villages, vineyards and olive groves and ancient ruins. The short distances mean that there are rapid changes of terrain and a variety of different road surfaces over short distances. What’s coming up in 2017
a. NO inheritance tax (death tax)! b. NO capital gains tax on any property purchased by 31 Dec 2016! c. You can secure your child’s future by educating them in Cyprus!
Cyprus Sunshine Cup: 23 - 26 Feb This is one of the most famous Mountain bike challenges in the UCI calendar and takes places over 4 days. Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 24 - 25 March There are three stages for the 3 days tour; and the total distance is 247.4 kms, of which 191 km is timed. Paphos Triathlon: 23 April 2017 The swimming distance is 1,5km; the cycle lap is 20km (the sprint distance is 1 lap and the Olympic distance is 2 laps); and the running distance 2,5km (sprint distances is 2 laps and Olympic distance is 4 laps). HEALTH, WEALTH & WELLNESS
VIRGIN ACTIVE WATERSTONE VILLAGE THE PERFECT PLACE TO START TRAINING!
You have entered your ‘big’ event, been on your bike, and still not feeling pleased with your performance - You’re starting to doubt if you should have done this at all! Re-think the benefits cycling could have on your health - It strengthens your cardiovascular system, reduces risk of heart disease and cancer, gets you fit, lose weight and burns fat, releases endorphins the “happy drug,” boosts your bowels, beats illness, makes you look younger, sleep better, improves your sex life, and develops a positive addiction! Cycling is not just about time in the saddle and going for the odd hill climb. There are a number of other aspects of training which can help you achieve your goals.
OPTIMUM RECOVERY IN STAGE RACES
What is the approach you need to apply towards your training and recovery to make sure you complete an event “comfortably” - may it be as a racing snake or weekend warrior? There is a significant difference in the condition of a rider entering the Transforma Life Recovery Zone who applies some sort of Recovery, and those who simply soldier on. The question I ask myself is, “Why make such a huge investment to participate in cycling, service your bike, pay race entry and Club Fee’s, and not to “service your body”, for lack of a better expression.” Here are a few basic principles which you can implement to improve your routine: Enter into an event well rested - The few days leading up to an event will not enhance your fitness and strength - there is no need to keep pushing. Warm up/Cool Down - Even though waiting in the starting shoot cools you down, it is not a bad idea to spend between 15-20min warming up before the start of a race. I prefer to cool down because it assists my muscles to recover and perform better during the next stage.

Virgin Active Waterstone Village, located in Somerset West, is the perfect place to start training. The new upgraded Watt Bike Studio will be opening soon. The Watt Bike training methodology is based on using a combination of heart rate and power to achieve the most effective training session based on your personal fitness levels and training goals. It accurately tracks your power/watt output, cadence, speed and heart rate etc. In a group environment it is just so much more motivating and fun. Off the bike strength and endurance training, core stability and flexibility are facets that are neglected by many a cyclist. Studio classes like pilates, stretch, yoga and shape can improve your performance on the bike. One on one or partner sessions can be of great benefit if you prefer Personal Training. Personal Trainers create specific individual workout programmes based on what you wish to achieve. Correct technique is taught to perform the given exercise. Motivation, accountability, efficiency, and variety is just a few of the benefits of working with a qualified trainer. Get out the diary and start planning your training to succeed in your Ultimate Race! Article by Desiree Naude For more information call Virgin Active Waterstone Village on 021 851 2704
“THE REAL CONNECTION BETWEEN HEALTH & WEALTH = #WHASP”
Rockfin Wealth Management - our philosophy: Healthy and Wealthy go together. People are taking decisive action to help us live longer and at the same time, advances in medicine and nutrition are also helping us extend our lives.
Nutrition/Hydration - Remember that race day is not the time to vary your routine or try out new foods. A crucial aspect of multi-stage racing is to make sure that you stay well hydrated. Your Recovery Bottle is very important to help replace the deficit you’ve lost whilst riding. Remember you only have a window of 30 – 60 minutes after your race to refuel your muscles. Sleep and Napping - A 30 – 60 minute snooze will help speed up your recovery and keep your energy levels high. Shower. Eat. Sleep. Why Massage is necessary - Massage assists in decreasing inflammation caused by exercise. As muscle cells become adapted to endurance exercise, the number of mitochondria increases. A massage helps this process along, speeds up muscle recovery, increases mobility and reduces your risk of injury. Electromyography (EMG) analysis in one research group showed that strength was greater in the group receiving the massage. Don’t make the mistake of receiving your first massage at the event, rather have a massage once a week, 2 weeks prior to the event. A 30 minute session is recommended.
But here’s an important thought: if you’re taking action to live a longer life, but you’re not getting yourself financially prepared for a longer life, you’re only getting half the job done. After all, do you see yourself as one of those cool grandmas scooting around town on a Vespa or well…not? Likewise if you do not look after your nutrition, especially while exercising, you are also only doing half a job! Investing into your exercise, diet supported by proper nutrition, has a similar effect to investing with money but has a physical impact rather than financial impact, hence the strong connection! Lourensford Viognier
Into Cycling Title Sponsor For The Newspaper Cycling Team
Exotic. Balanced. Bursting with flavour.
Into Cycling is excited to announce that the publication will be the Title sponsor for Team The Newspaper, competing in various MTB races during 2016 and 2017, including the Wines2Whales and the ABSA Cape Epic.
Those are just a few descriptive words to give you a glimpse of Lourensford’s Limited Release Viognier - of which there are only a handful of single varietal wines bottled in South Africa.
The new Into Cycling kit was launched at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West on 21 October 2016 – setting the stage for the 3 days Wines2Whales Race of 210 kilometres taking place from 11-13 November 2016.
As Michael Olivier, well known Cape wine and foodie describes Viognier, “If Viognier were a person, she would be my best friend’s sister. Blonde, curvaceous, with an air of beguiling perfume about her and an easy mixer in social circles!”
The team competing in the W2W will be represented by Alwyn Kannemeyer and Carl Runkel. Into Cycling would like to wish the riders all the best while making their final preparations for W2W Race. We trust that you will have fun, inspire your fellow riders and create great memories.
Lourensford’s Cellar Master Hannes Nel also describes this wine in feminine terms and fondly refers to it as a Lady of Spice. “There is so much happening on your pallet when you drink this wine. It is like imagining a belly dancer in a Bedouin tent in the dessert, dancing on your tongue,” says Hannes. Except for the men getting poetic about this wine, it has enjoyed recognition all over the world. Over the last 3 vintages, Lourensford’s Viognier has achieved 2 x Double Golds at the Michelangelo Awards, the Top Wine at the SA Terroir awards and scored 90 and 91 points by Tim Atkin, well-known British wine judge. This wine was 100% fermented in wood of which 39% was new and a split of 39% Hungarian oak and 61% French oak. The Hungarian oak contributes to the lingering mouth feel of the wine and it was aged for 11 months. Hannes describes the wine as, “Perfumed with exotic aromas of jasmine, lavender, grapefruit and hints of dried apricot and white peach that balms the air before the full bodied character is slowly revealed and supported by a linear balanced acidity. On the pallet are white peach and quince flavours and traces of creamy lemon butter, nutmeg, ginger and vanilla with a flinty mineral finish.”

GENERAL
Is there a future for cycling as commuter transport in Cape Town?
Transport for Cape Town (TCT), the City’s transport authority, will soon publish a draft Cycling Strategy which aims to increase the percentage of commuter trips made by bicycle from the current 1% to 8% by 2032.
Safety for cycling in the city
Cape Town promotes cycling both as a sustainable method of transport and a great way to stay fit and healthy. It is also cheaper, often quicker than motor vehicles and contributes to a better all-round city. However, not all our roads are designed to accommodate cyclists and motorists safely, and both must have respect for the “Rules of the Road.” This, together with common sense, can make cycling a safe and enjoyable activity. So before you venture out on your next ride or start to use your bicycle to commute to work, keep the following safety tips in mind: Cyclists stay alive at 1.5 - Motorists should ensure that they have 1.5m distance between your bicycle and their vehicle on the road at all times. No helmet = no ride - Make sure your helmet is properly fitted and worn correctly. Riding without a helmet has been illegal in South Africa since 2004. Be visible - Wear reflective gear. If you plan on riding after sunset or before sunrise, place flashing lights both at the front and rear of your bicycle.
Cycling as a viable and safe means of transport in Cape Town was one of the key discussions at the five-day Mobility Indaba held at Kenilworth Racecourse during Transport Month. The event was hosted by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cape Town in collaboration with the City of Cape Town, Transport for Cape Town, WESGRO and Accelerate Cape Town.
Carry your emergency details with you - Have your contact details with you at all times in case of an accident. Keep left, single file - Cyclists should always stick to the left of the road to make way for motorists and keep the 1.5m distance. Also remember to ride in single file. Obey all traffic rules - As road users, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are required to obey all traffic laws – this includes making a full stop at an intersection.
According to the 2016 TomTom Traffic Index Report Cape Town is rated as the most congested city in South Africa. The aim of the event was to rethink the way people move in the City of Cape Town and co-create a way forward. The Mobility Indaba weekend activities started with the opening of the Mobility Hack by Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde stating, “We need to keep people at the centre of our planning; mobility is about how people move and that’s where our focus should be. Congestion is a constraint to economic growth, and it is a huge cost to our emotional well-being. We see this with commuters faced with train delays and motorists stuck in gridlocked traffic. Part of the solution is building trust in the system, in that you trust your child will arrive safely at school if they walk, or you’ll arrive safely at work if you decide to cycle.” The Mobility Hack will use the outcomes of the conference as a starting point to use design thinking to create solutions to challenges around mobility. Other highlights included the opening of the Pedal Power Association (PPA) Pump Track offering kids of all ages, a traffic-free environment to have fun and improve their cycling skills. Furthermore, the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) also offered a Safety Cycling School Programme where kids received their cycling diplomas. Turning cycling into a popular mode of transport (as opposed to it being a largely recreational activity), the ability to ride, access to bicycles, safe routes, integration with other modes of transport, and behavioural changes were also discussed at the indaba.
Tell a friend or family member - Always let someone know when and where you are going. Remember your manners - Indicate your intentions (for example if you are going to turn) and check that drivers have seen you. Make eye contact with them so that they know you are there, and thank them if they let you through. Be prepared - If you are going to be cycling for a long time, make sure you have sufficient water and something to eat. Carry spares - A spare tube, tyre lever and pump are the bare minimum. Be vigilant - Ride in groups or with other people. If you are feeling unsafe, turn back. Check your bicycle before you start your trip - Check for anything that may cause a flat tyre; also check your brakes and check for any loose nuts and bolts. Bicycles and public transport
In the run up to the Mobility Indaba Councillor Herron of the City of Cape Town issued a statement that the city intends to release a draft cycling strategy for public comment in die coming months with the purpose to grow their modal share of utility cycling.
At the moment, bicycles are allowed on MyCiTi buses, but not on Golden Arrow Bus Services or Metrorail (although there have been exceptions on bicycle event days). This is under discussion with Metrorail.
According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron, the City of Cape Town has committed substantial resources over the past decade to create a cycling-friendly city, but have not succeeded as yet in convincing more residents to accept and use cycling as a legitimate mode of transport. He added that the city’s existing cycle network now covers at least 450 km of cycle lanes, with some of these lanes being popular for recreational cycling in particular. “Residents are encouraged to also do their part and to start changing the way they travel and make more sustainable travelling choices such as public transport, carpooling, or working flexi-time – as is proposed in our draft Travel Demand Management Strategy. Sustainable travelling choices include cycling and this will be addressed in our draft Cycling Strategy,” said Councillor Herron. Cycling has numerous advantages: it is cheap, environmentally friendly, and is a healthy alternative to private vehicles for trips of 10 km or less. “We need residents to use bicycles for shorter trips and we need our motorists to accept cycling as a legitimate mode of transport – thus, that cyclists are also entitled to use the city’s roads.” “Our draft Cycling Strategy will propose alternative approaches for cultivating a cycling culture in Cape Town. We will also make a business case of how a cycling culture can assist our local economy. For example, we want to explore possibilities of a bicycle manufacturing plant and a bike-share system – but then we need our residents to take to the streets and to start a cycling revolution”, Councillor Herron concluded.
PAGE 14
Rules of the road for cyclists Along with dedicated bicycle paths and lanes, cyclists may ride on any road open to cycling. This excludes freeways (like the M3, M5, N1 and N2) in and near Cape Town. Use cycle lanes wherever these exist. Remember that bicycles are regarded as vehicles and cyclists must obey certain laws in terms of the National Traffic Act 93 of 1996 and the National Road Traffic Regulations. Regulations are as follows: Riding without a helmet is illegal, Always stop at all red traffic lights and all stop streets, and give way to pedestrians, Ride on the left of the road, You must be seated in your saddle, You must ride in single file, You may not deliberately swerve your bicycle from side to side and if you are riding on a public road where there is a bicycle lane, you must use that lane.

Winning Photography Shot BMX Across A Bridge In Germany The best action and adventure sports photographers from around the globe were celebrated in Chicago as the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2016 Overall Winner, German photographer Lorenz Holder took the top spot for the second time running. Next to winning the Masterpiece by Yodobashi and Playground categories, his atmospheric shot of athlete Senad Grosic riding his BMX across a bridge in Germany received the most votes. “In my photos, I like to show the viewers the beauty of the environment where athletes perform. I think a great location is one of the key elements for a great action picture,” says Lorenz. Senad and Lorenz were on the way to a different location early in the morning, when they passed this scenic spot. They saw a sign from the street and Lorenz had some pictures in mind that he’d seen from this bridge on the internet. When they got there the sun was just above the trees and lighting up the full color-spectrum of the autumn leaves. “One thing that was a little annoying was that the lake was covered with leaves, so the reflection of the bridge in the lake was just not there. But sometimes you just need a bit of luck. I had been on a fishing trip some days before and still had my fishing-boots and a net in the car. I got the stuff and tried to clean the lake by hand. Luckily the sun was still very soft, so we had good light for the shot,” Lorenz continued.
Photo Credit: Lorenz Holder/ Red Bull Illume
He’d chosen a very low camera position to get an almost perfect mirrored scene on the water surface. The bridge looked like a perfect circle and the light was good. With Senad stationed on the bridge, it took two or three tries to get the shot. There was no time left for another shot as the wind came up and the perfect reflection on the water was gone. “We jumped back to the car and drove towards our originally planned spot. It was an awesome feeling to have shot this picture with more or less pure luck,” Lorenz concluded.
Last Lion Trophy for an #Untamed rider The Last Lion Trophy - a stunning bronze artwork by internationally renowned sculptor Dylan Lewis will become part of the Untamed African MTB race story as unveiled during the launch of the Absa Cape Epic Route 2017 in Cape Town recently. The weighty statue stands about 30cm tall and 50cm long and depicts a lion lying on a rock and looking out across the plains. Last Lion Trophy will go to the last cyclist who has finished every edition of the Absa Cape Epic. As things stand there are four who have managed to finish each of the 13 editions so far. The Fabulous Four are Craig Beech (Somerset West), John Gale (Cape Town), Mike Nixon (Cape Town) and Hannele Steyn from (Knysna) - they will all be on the start line in 2017. Eventually, as one or another drops out or fails to finish, there will be one person left who has finished each event: The Last Lion. That person will get the Last Lion Trophy, a much sought after artwork by a man regarded by London’s Portland gallery as ‘one of the world’s most important contemporary sculptors of animals’. Lewis has exhibited around the world to critical acclaim and, appropriately, one of his installations is called Untamed. Lewis chose this particular work for the Last Lion award because of its “sense of solitariness … which seemed appropriate”. It was created in clay and then converted into bronze using a process known as “lost wax casting”. Lewis confesses to be more of a surfer than a mountain biker, but says he is well aware of the Absa Cape Epic and its challenges. Last year Absa Cape Epic CEO Lynn Naudé announced the Last Lions concept: “We decided to recognise these athletes in a special way. They have shown amazing commitment and drive and are obviously very talented athletes. It is quite something to just get to the start of the Absa Cape Epic, but to finish is truly amazing.”
