New Year, New Chapter

I

n the closing issue of 2015, it’s only fitting that we acknowledge the contributions of our Influencers (page 16). These are the men and women whose lives both reflect

and shape notions of what it is to be in the LGBT community today. People like Pride Toronto’s Mathieu Chantelois and fashion designer Arthur Mendonca demonstrate that staying fit physically positions us for doing great things in other parts of our lives. Those lives are moving with ever more velocity, given the role of social media in our world. Against this backdrop has come new prominence of the “T” in our LGBT shorthand. The increasingly high profile of transgender family members, neighbours, co-workers and celebrities—such as Caitlyn Jenner—has come not a moment too soon for those who have grappled with gender identity in silence. The trans issue is so out, if you will, in

Skin in the Game → Soothing moisturizers that lend new meaning to cold comfort By Tracy Howard

W

ith the season’s social circuit, gift-shopping and not-so-festive workloads, skin care likely isn’t the top priority on your holiday list. But neglecting your dermis in winter can result in parched skin, a nose redder than Rudolph’s and an appearance that’s more haggard than handsome. Luckily,

there are simple measures to keep your skin happy when the north wind blows. Limit showers to 15 minutes, tuck a lip balm in a pocket of every coat and use a humidifier to combat moisture-sapping indoor heat. And consider the following moisturizers for your winter skincare regimen:

1

2

1

POWER UP Hopefully, you already apply moisturizer at least once a day. But with winter’s frosty air, you may need to add some bigger guns to your hydrating arsenal. Consider the Power Serum from CW Beggs and Sons, a new Canadian men’s skincare line. This light, paraben-free anti-aging serum contains hyaluronic acid to counteract the drying effects of cold weather, along with colloidal platinum to help improve the skin’s firmness and elasticity. ($48, at cwbeggs.com)

2

BEHIND THE MASK As the place where BB cream and seemingly a thousand other beauty and grooming innovations were born, South Korea is the current hotbed of skin care. So it’s a no-brainer that the country would be a rich source of smart solutions for winter-worn faces. Erborian, a French-Korean brand recently launched in Canada, offers Bamboo Waterlock, which can be used as a hydrating rinseoff mask or as an overnight treatment for thirsty skin. The sulfate- and paraben-free mask is enriched with both bamboo sap and fibres, together offering skin-hydrating amino acids as well as proteins and lipids to help retain moisture. ($48, at sephora.ca, The Shopping Channel, Hudson’s Bay and thebay.com)

3

ADD SOME COLOUR To camouflage pastiness, forgo the skin-damaging fake ’n’ bake for a healthy glow. Oil-free CW Beggs and Sons Tinted Moisturizer uses light-reflective pigments to help even skin tone and brighten under-eye circles. Hypoallergenic and made without parabens or gluten. ($28, at cwbeggs.com)

4

HELPING HANDS Frequent handwashing is a must during cold-and-flu season, but it also can be murder on the mitts. To counteract damage, apply hand cream after every wash. In addition to your bathroom supply, stock a bottle of lotion at the office and in your gym bag. Paraben-free Jack Black Intense Therapy Hand Cream offers a rich formula with vitamins A and E to help heal dry, cracked and calloused hands. ($17.50, at getjackblack.ca)

ou probably think of the Fiat 500 as a cute little fuel-sipper that wears its Italian heritage on its fenders. But there is a more venomous edition that will scare the whip from your espresso. Meet the Fiat with an enjoyably bad attitude. Beyond scorpion logos, you’ll know the Abarth by its 17-inch alloys, low-profile tires and red brake calipers. The 500’s “whiskers and logo” face is accentuated by a bolder facia. Flared wheel arches, side skirts and twin chrome exhausts amplify the visuals—as does a downforce-increasing rear spoiler. Most of the add-ons have purpose. Designers have upgraded the interior with a high-definition colour instrument cluster and Bluetooth streaming audio. Our test car came with one-piece charcoal-grey cloth bucket seats with red striping that hug your sides. A thick leather-wrapped

steering wheel, body-colour dash panels and automatic climate control enhance luxury. Beats by Dr. Dre audio with a 368-watt amplifier and subwoofer will rock your socks, but the powertrain will blow your hair back. The exhaust sounds like a scorned lawnmower, but a turbo charged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine sends 117kW/157 horsepower to the front wheels through a newly available sixspeed automatic transmission. Given the standard fivespeed manual’s temperamental

nature, get the automatic. Fuel economy is rated 9.6/7.3 litres/ 100km city/hwy. All of the body accoutrement is backed by a track-ready chassis. Engineers lowered the ride height, stiffened the suspension, and specified disc brakes to give the tall city car sportier handling. While it’s no Ferrari, the Abarth plays the part of a performance car. It’s not all whipped espresso. The driving position is typically Italian with a forward-canted steering wheel, and the suspen-

sion thunks over rough pavement. Except for what’s leather and painted, the plastic-laden interior feels sub-compact chic. My husband loved the rowdy exhaust rumble, but it just made my ears tired. Your morning drive, whether to a stuffy office or college campus, doesn’t have to be boring. The Fiat Abarth is as practical as every other city-sized 500, but it comes with enjoyably more attitude. An as-tested price of $26,275 puts it against the Mini Cooper S, Chevy Sonic RS, Hyundai Veloster Turbo and Ford Fiesta ST.

HIV Breakthrough → New studies confirm a promising drug is ready for prime time By Dr. Malcolm Hedgcock

I

f we look at HIV rates all over the Western world, we see that while new infec-

tions are happening less and less frequently in most risk groups, rates continue to rise among men who have sex with men (MSM). Obviously, our current prevention strategies—such as open access to HIV testing, condom use and education—are

not

sufficient.

So we need to think about novel approaches.

With vaccines a ways off, attention has turned to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). With this strategy, antiretroviral medication that we use to treat HIV is instead taken daily to prevent infection. We’ve known for several years that PrEP works. The iPrEx study, published in 2010, showed that taking a medication called Truvada every day was very effective at preventing HIV, as long as it was taken consistently. More recently, three large research studies have added to the mounting evidence supporting PrEP use among those at high risk for HIV infection. The PROUD study was designed to look at the effectiveness of PrEP in the real world, not under highly controlled research conditions. MSM attending any of a number of sexual-health clinics around the UK were invited to participate if they were deemed to be at high risk for contracting HIV (having unprotected anal intercourse at least once within the past 90 days and a high likelihood of doing so again in the near future). Participants were given safer-sex counselling typically

offered at the clinic. In addition, though, half were given Truvada to take daily, and half were asked to wait a year before starting Truvada. There were 544 highly sexually active men in the study—64 percent of whom had been treated for a sexually transmitted infection in the past year. Many had used party drugs in the past 90 days. Twenty-three of the study subjects became infected with HIV, many more than had been predicted. Twenty infections occurred in the group waiting to take Truvada and therefore not on any active medication. Three infections occurred in the group who were supposed to be taking Truvada. On close inspection, two of them weren’t actually taking their Truvada, and the third was found to be infected before the trial started. These results were so striking that an ethics review board stopped the trial prior to completion so everyone could start using PrEP immediately. A second strategy was investigated in France and Montreal, with Truvada taken only around the time of sexual activity—not every day. In this study, called Ipergay, MSM deemed at high risk for HIV infection were either offered Truvada or a placebo in addition to safer-sex counselling. They were instructed to take two tablets two to 24 hours before sex and then every 24 hours afterwards until two days following the last sexual exposure. Once again, the number of HIV transmissions was much higher than researchers had antici-

pated. There were 16 infections, 14 in the placebo group and two among individuals who were supposed to be taking active medication. However, these two subjects hadn’t actually taken any medication for the past couple of months. On average, people took about four tablets of Truvada per week. Some wonder if this “ondemand” strategy will be as effective for people who are less sexually active. On the flip side, this approach can drastically reduce medication costs—a major barrier to PrEP use in Canada. The final report looked at PrEP among some 600 San Francisco MSM. After more than two and a half years of follow-up, there have been zero HIV infections in this group, despite ongoing highrisk behaviour. Data from these three trials are clear: Truvada for HIV prevention is exceptionally effective. Within these studies and throughout the literature to date, we have not seen one HIV infection in someone who is taking PrEP properly. Aside from the San Francisco study, most research so far has not found a significant increase in sexual risk-taking. This will be watched closely as more men start using PrEP outside research settings. It must be stressed that PrEP should always be given as part of a comprehensive pre-

vention package with counselling on the risks of unprotected sex. Truvada can also lead to kidney injury, as well as bone-density loss in some men. While concerns over increased risk-taking are valid, we need to aggressively address Canada’s rise in HIV infections NOW. HIV is a manageable disease but still carries a burden of stigma and long-term medical consequences. Taking PrEP during a sexually adventurous phase is far preferable to lifelong HIV treatment. By year’s end in Canada, about 1,500 MSM will have become infected with HIV, all preventable with a single daily tablet. It’s time we made PrEP available for everyone in the country who’s at risk.

I have been feeling so bummed lately about being single. All of my friends are landing in relationships that they’re happy in, and I’ve never been able to hold down a relationship for more than a couple of months. I meet a guy and start dating and want so badly for him to be “the one,” but it falls apart. It’s hard not to think that there’s something wrong with me. My parents often ask if I’m seeing anyone and when I say no, I feel like a failure. They’re religious and took some time to accept me as their gay son. They also were concerned about what kind of “lifestyle” I would have. I go to family holiday dinners and feel like the weirdo who’s not only gay but always alone. I’m 34 years old and can’t help but feel like I should already have successfully settled down. Can you offer some help? Ben Dear Ben: A lot of us queer folk living in a phobic world can feel as if we have to somehow compensate for our sexual orientation by being palatable to others in every other way. First it’s “I’m gay and what will people think?” And then the question becomes, “Am I being the ‘right’ kind’ of gay?” While I am glad to hear that your family has come around since you came out, it seems that they are still somehow encouraging you to feel “less than”—even if that is not their intention. Take some comfort in knowing that this experience connects you to countless others who are being interrogated by their relatives over turkey dinners, hoping for the sweet relief of a tryptophan-induced haze.
Adding to the specific pressures we face as a community, there’s the larger societal realm. That’s where we’re endlessly exposed to Mary J. Blige slow jams and Nicholas Sparks film adaptations that posit romantic love as a windswept saviour from the banality of our desperate single lives. It takes a lot of might to stay

grounded and see the meaning in our lives regardless of what our Facebook relationship status indicates. As for your dating woes, a lot of people in their 30s haven’t yet had a long-term relationship. Your romantic ventures might also be getting short-circuited because of your true motivations. As long as you set out to date a new fellow with a fear-driven intention of landing “the one,” there’s a good chance that all the pressure will make things implode and get in the way of actually connecting with someone. See if you can focus on the pleasures of getting to know someone new instead of how they might help you check off some imaginary big life box. While being in a satisfying relationship could be great, it won’t make you a more worthwhile person than you already are.

We’re endlessly exposed to [things] that posit romantic love as a saviour from the banality of our single lives.

MONEY$tyle

Taking Stock → As a new year dawns, give yourself the gift of financial security By Al Ramsay

A

s you recover from yet another holiday celebration, I imagine you’re focusing on wellness as part of your New Year’s resolution. To make progress, you’ll need to step on the scale. At this time of the year, I encourage you to step on the financial scale, as well. Depending on what it shows, you may want to 1) increase muscle mass, 2) reduce body fat, 3) do a little of both or 4) simply stay exactly where you are. The number you’re seeking on the financial scale is not in pounds. Instead, it’s your net worth (what you own minus what you owe). What you own, of course, are your assets (i.e. savings, investments, car, house, etc.). I’ll equate that to muscle mass, the good stuff you want to increase. What you owe are your liabilities (i.e. loans, mortgage, credit-card debt and a line-of-credit balance). I’ll equate this to body fat we want to trim. Set a goal indicating what you want your net worth to be in the next 12 months, and start your workout. You can find net-worth calculators online (try TD Canada Trust’s, www.tdcanadatrust.com/ tools/planning/input_en.jsp). INCREASE YOUR MUSCLE MASS Save from your income by setting up an automatic plan on the same frequency as your pay cycle. Speak to an advisor to determine where to direct this money—a deposit account, mutual funds or stocks. Some of these produce income, such as interest and dividends, to increase your assets even faster. As lifestyle needs change, you can apply these savings and investments to such purchases as real estate. (For a savings tool, visit www.tools.tdcanadatrust.com/ tdam-npc-ie/Major_Purchase1.asp.)

• If you turn 71 this year, make your final RRSP contribution and convert your RRSP to a RIF or annuity. • Allocate pension income to your partner. FOR FAMILIES • Contribute toward a RESP to capture the grant for the current year and any previous year outstanding. • Collect receipts for the children’s fitness tax credit and children’s art tax credit.

REDUCE BODY FAT When you have debt, it’s important to confirm that you’re paying the lowest interest rate possible. So negotiate with lenders to refinance at a lower rate, if possible. It’s better to give more attention to debts with the highest interest and those that can be fully paid off the soonest. The ideal situation is to consolidate your debts into one payment. (For a debt-management tool, visit www.tdcanadatrust.com/ debtManagement.form?lang=en.) WHEN THE BALL DROPS Just moments after New Years, I often joke with friends that I haven’t seen them since last year—which is technically true. Although there is little difference in time between one year and the next (December 31 vs. January 1), it can make a huge difference for the taxman. So it’s important to know about tax

strategies you can take advantage of for the current tax year, things that need to be done before the year ends. The few I’m pointing out do not make a complete list, and I recommend consulting your tax advisor long before heading out to that New Year’s Eve bash. FOR EVERYONE • Analyze your income-tax situation to determine whether to make a RRSP contribution and, if so, how much. • Time withdrawals from your TFSA, because withdrawals made in 2015 can be re-contributed the next calendar year of 2016. • Review your portfolio with your advisor. FOR SENIORS • Consider applying for the Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plan if you become eligible this year.

FOR STUDENTS • Deduct eligible moving expenses when you relocate close to campus and back home. • Claim foreign tuition, education and textbook amounts. • Claim the GST/HST tax credit. The above tips are taken from TD Wealth’s Year End Tax Planning Tips for Seniors, Employees, Families and Students. Ask your advisor for the complete list. Although my column focuses on dollars and cents, I ask that you not lose sight of why we work hard to save and protect our assets: to provide for and spend quality time with our loved ones. So plan ahead, but be sure to relax and enjoy the holidays. Cheers!

The Influencers Winter is no match for these LGBT leaders Photography by Riley Stewart

ARTHUR MENDOnÇA Award-winning fashion designer Arthur Mendonca has helped elevate Canadian fashion to international heights. To stay at the top of his game, Mendonca knows you have to stay in shape—the entire year. He may have been raised in sunny Portugal, but he’s become accustomed to Canada’s take-no-prisoners winter months. YOUR WINTER FITNESS STRATEGY I’ve just started with [one of] Nike’s running programs. I love running outside, but when the weather gets too bad, I’ll bring my workouts indoors. So that means three days of resistance training, alternating with two or three days of cardio. I also like to alternate my cardio, one day running and one day plyometric jump training. INSPIRATION FOR HEALTHY LIVING That’s simple: to look sexy as hell in a bathing suit. BEST LIFE LESSON SO FAR Just say YES! Every time an opportunity presents itself, say Yes! MATHIEU CHANTELOIS Pride Toronto’s Executive Director Mathieu Chantelois has a fitness motto: “Work hard. Play hard. Cleanse. Repeat.” Chantelois needs all the stamina he can muster to steer Canada’s powerful LGBT organization through sometimes challenging waters. The journalist and long-time TV personality knows fitness is a year-round commitment. YOUR WINTER FITNESS STRATEGY Unfortunately, hibernating will not help me stay in shape, so I try to get outside as much as I can. Like anyone, though, I find it hard to get out of bed to hit the gym when it’s dark in the morning. So I try to tuck in earlier at night and go from tired to inspired. I also go big on water and veggies. INSPIRATION FOR HEALTHY LIVING My couch—I feel so guilty sitting down without exercising first. I try not to give in to my sofa until I’ve completed my workout of the day. In a previous life, I was an entertainment reporter, and Matthew McConaughey told me once that his only fitness rule was to break a sweat daily. Since then, I try to do the same, whether it’s a workout, a hot yoga or a CrossFit session. BEST LIFE LESSON SO FAR Vivian Greene wrote, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” I couldn’t agree more.
