From the

EDITORS... “I’m looking forward to seeing the world’s best surfers back doing what they do best, in the competition jersey in one of the world’s most historical, iconic and passionate surf towns.” – Andrew Stark, World Surf League Asia Pacific General Manager. We couldn’t agree more, and of course, what makes this event extra-special is that the eyes of the Surfing World will not just be on the world’s best in the water – but also firmly focused on our very own Merewether Beach. This month we speak to our two favourite “Team-Merewether” identities – Ryan Callinan and Phillipa Anderson as we prepare to cheer them on from our sandy shores. As we go to print, the lifting of COVID restrictions across NSW couldn’t be more welcome. If you had told me a year ago that it would take a year to see restrictions substantially removed and life getting back to the ‘new’ normal – I probably would have thought you crazy. But whilst we wax lyrical about how good it would have been to know what was just around the corner this time last year – sometimes it’s good to be a bit of an Ostrich. Rather than lamenting on all that we would miss out on (a whole year of our lives!), not knowing when it would all (almost) end has taught us to chill a bit – to take each day as it comes and hope that things will be better tomorrow. It’s also taught us not to take anything for granted – and I, for one, think that’s a lesson many of us needed to learn. We’ve also learned in the past week that you can never have too many one-in-one-hundred-year events in any given time frame, with droughts, bushfires, global pandemics and now floods in the space of just over one year (not 100!) Our thoughts go out to all of those affected by the floods. We’re excited to include for our readers the ATWEA College Course Guide for Autumn in this issue. In the guide, you’ll find a fantastic array of courses to choose from in everything from hospitality and retail, community and aged care to business, art, food and languages. Whether you are learning for fun or to advance your career, get planning and start learning. Enjoy!

Love Live Performance

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFT, CONSIDERING OPTIONS FOR A ROMANTIC EVENING OR A GREAT NIGHT OUT? LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THESE UPCOMING PERFORMANCES IN THE CIVIC THEATRE AND CITY HALL.

LIVE AT LUNCH If mingling with musos is something you’d like to try, have a look at our next Live at Lunch offering. Viva Italia: Life is Beautiful celebrates the beauty that is the music of Italy. Be swept away by flautist Jane Rutter and guitarist Giuseppe Zangari, joined by Marcello Maio on the accordion and piano, as they fill the glorious Concert Hall with the very best of all things Italian. To really make a day of it, select the ‘Concert & Lunch with the Stars’ package, so you can enjoy the show and then join the stars for lunch in the Cummings Room in City Hall.

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY A thrilling juxtaposition of beauty and devastation, Impermanence is Rafael Bonachela’s newest creation for Sydney Dance Company. This full-length work was described by ArtsHub as: “A tear-jerker without being Baroque, with a finger on the vein of our collective anxieties and dislocations, Impermanence is a triumph of collaboration and passion.” The score by contemporary composer, Bruce Dessner, is full of emotional power. Performed live on stage by the Australian String Quartet and the full might of Sydney Dance Company’s ensemble, this is an epic, driven performance that packs an emotional punch. Join Sydney Dance Company for their triumphant return to the stage and experience the power of dance and music performed live together, laden with meaning, energy, urgency, radiance and hope! OPERA AUSTRALIA PRESENTS BIZET’S CARMEN Enigmatic and elusive, Carmen is the femme fatale you simply cannot forget. In Bizet’s famous opera, Carmen captivates Don José with her sensual Habanera, luring him into her world. He gives up everything to follow her. But Carmen’s wandering eye has already found a new lover – the dashing bullfighter Escamillo. Don José’s jealousy is fierce. Escamillo’s passion is intense. In a gripping finale, Carmen must face her fate. Experience the thrilling Spanish colour and rhythms of Bizet’s vibrant score with Opera Australia’s singers, live chamber orchestra and a children’s chorus drawn from the local community. This new production includes gorgeous sets and vintage-inspired costumes. You can hear classics such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song just as Bizet meant them — loud, live and completely unamplified.

SINCE THE LAST ISSUE, THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY LOST PART OF ITS HEART WITH THE DEATH OF MICHAEL GUDINSKI. THOUGH YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN HIM, IF YOU PURCHASED A CONCERT TICKET, AN ALBUM, OR SANG ALONG LOUDLY TO SONGS ON THE AUSTRALIAN RADIO AIRWAVES ANYTIME IN THE LAST SEVERAL DECADES, MG WAS PART OF YOUR LIFE. There are people far more qualified to speak of his love of music and his enormous personality than I, and nothing sums it up better than the words below posted after his passing by the companies he founded, Mushroom Records and Frontier Touring. Companies that championed Australian music and made Australia an enjoyable and lucrative destination for international touring artists. “Michael Gudinski was a key figure in shaping the Australian music industry. He founded the Mushroom Group in 1972 at just 20 years old, which flourished into Australia’s largest independent entertainment group covering touring, record labels, publishing, merchandising, booking agencies, film and television production and creative services. Some of Australia’s most iconic albums have been released under one of his Mushroom Group record labels. His touring company Frontier Touring is Australia’s leading promoter, touring the biggest names in global music since its inception in 1979.” “A larger-than-life figure, Michael was widely respected for his unwavering passion for all music – in particular

FAMILY FUN AT THE LAKE MAC AUTUMN FAIR! The Lake Mac Autumn Fair is a brand new annual event to be held at Speers Point Park on Saturday, 1 May (9am until 4pm), presented by the combined Rotary clubs of Warners Bay, Cardiff and Toronto Sunrise and styled on the traditional British MayDay Spring Fair. With loads of traditional fair games like a coconut shy and quoits on offer and less conventional games (like a dunny roll toss!),

Australian music. Most recently, with the music industry severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael conceptualised and developed Music From The Home Front, The Sound and The State Of Music, platforms designed to showcase and support contemporary Australian music in an incredibly difficult time. It speaks to the man he was that of all his countless illustrious career achievements, these projects that supported the industry he loved were ones he was particularly proud of.” “Michael was renowned for his loyalty and dedication. His ability to achieve the unachievable against unsurmountable odds was proven time and again and spoke to his absolute passion for his career and life.” “Michael’s family loved him immensely, and Michael, in turn, adored his wife Sue, son Matt and partner Cara, daughter Kate and husband Andrew, and their children Nina-Rose and Lulu. They meant everything to him, and he was immensely proud of them. Michael often referred to his 200+ staff as the Mushroom Family, with many having clocked decades in his employment.” “Michael’s legacy will live on through his family and the enormously successful Mushroom Group – an enduring embodiment of decades of passion and determination from an incredible man.” There are the stories which are all public knowledge and the stories and memories some people only know because they were there for a particular tour or a particular moment. It’s the thing that makes this industry so special. On a personal note, there are so many shows I have had the chance to work on, artists I have been able to share time with, photos I have backstage with my daughter, special moments at A Day on the Green with my Mum, getting to introduce one of my best friends to the Foo Fighters, so much music that makes me smile, music that makes me cry. Moments and memories that would not exist without Michael. Ed Sheeran seemed to sum it up on stage at the State Memorial Service in front of a packed Rod Laver Arena when he said, “Michael was a tornado of joy. Everywhere he went, he lifted the room and then f***ed off”.” The fact that he is inspiring musicians even after his passing was apparent when Sheeran performed a song he had written in quarantine while waiting for his chance to say goodbye to his friend. The song Visiting Hours just opened the flood gates for so many who had managed to hold it together until that point. At that moment, I sat in the dark, with my daughter asleep on my lap and tears streaming down my face, feeling thankful for Michael Gudinski.

“MEREWETHER IS A QUALITY HIGH-PERFORMANCE WAVE, AND NEWCASTLE IS A PLACE WITH SUCH AN INCREDIBLE PRO SURFING HISTORY. FROM THE LONG-RUNNING SURFEST AND MATTARA EVENTS TO BIRTHING LEGENDS LIKE MARK RICHARDS, NICKY WOOD AND LUKE EGAN, TO NAME A FEW, THE PLACE IS A SURF TOWN AND IS ALWAYS FRONT OF MIND WHEN IT COMES TO SURFING EVENTS.”

NEWCASTLE HAS LONG BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH WORLD-CLASS SURFING. FROM ITS 36-YEAR HISTORY AS THE HOME OF INTERNATIONAL SURF CONTESTS TO ITS LEGENDARY LINE-UP OF FORMER PROS INCLUDING LUKE EGAN, MATT HOY, NICKY WOODS AND FOUR-TIME WORLD CHAMP MARK RICHARDS, NEWCASTLE IS KNOWN AROUND THE WORLD FOR ITS IMPRESSIVE SURFING PEDIGREE. IT’S LITTLE WONDER THEN THAT NEWCASTLE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST DOORS THE WORLD SURFING LEAGUE (WSL) CAME KNOCKING ON WHEN COVID-19 FORCED A SHIFT FROM SOME OF THEIR TRADITIONAL AUSTRALIAN LOCATIONS THIS YEAR.

The Rip Curl Newcastle Cup will officially kick off the Australian leg of the 2021 Championship Tour on April 1, replacing the time-honoured Bells Beach event in a one-off detour to the renowned breaks of Merewether Beach. It will see 54 of the world’s best surfers take to the waves for their first competitive CT event since the final two American rounds of the tour were cancelled in January following a surge in coronavirus cases in the US. World Surf League Asia Pacific General Manager Andrew Stark said the return to competition was a long-time coming for the athletes, who were ready and raring to go after completing two weeks of quarantine in Sydney. “The WSL as a whole, staff and surfers, are extremely excited to be back doing what we do best – running worldclass events, not only for ourselves but for surf fans all around the world,” he said. “The pandemic has been really tough on international sports globally, including WSL, so it will be extremely rewarding to sound the siren for heat one and even better to present the trophies to the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup 2021 winners. “Merewether is a quality high-performance wave, and Newcastle is a place with such an incredible pro surfing history. From the long-running Surfest and Mattara events to birthing legends like Mark Richards, Nicky Wood and Luke Egan, to name a few, the place is a surf town and is always front of mind when it comes to surfing events.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the world’s best surfers back doing what they do best, in the competition jersey in one of the world’s most historical, iconic and passionate surf towns.” While the event will give Newcastle surf fans an unmissable opportunity to see the sport’s elite athletes in action, there will also be plenty of hometown pride on the line, with seeded Novocastrians Ryan Callinan and Morgan Cibilic lining up alongside adopted “local” Julian Wilson, who moved to the area three years ago. Rounding out the Merewether contingent will be Qualifying Series surfers Philippa Anderson and Jackson Baker, who have been granted wildcard status for the CT event. “The opportunity to see the world’s best surfers doing battle at your home break is something every surfer would be excited about. It’s not every day Gabriel Medina, Stephanie Gilmore, Carissa Moore and John John Florence surf at your local spot,” Mr Stark said. “The WSL offered a men’s and a women’s wildcard spot to the Merewether Boardriders Club, and they were able to award them to Philippa Anderson and Jackson Baker, two promising QS talents from Merewether. “It’s a massive opportunity for the two of them, and we’re all really excited to see them take on the world’s best at their home break. “Merewether handles all sorts of conditions and can offer up different challenges for competitors. From big, long righthanders in a south swell to peaky beach-break conditions in an east or north-east swell. “The best aspect will be that the competitors will be forced to adapt to a number of conditions, and fans will get to see all sorts of surfing. Autumn is prime time for waves here, so we should get some excellent surf in this timeframe.” (Continued next page) ► www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 11

(Continued) While COVID-19 restrictions will limit the event's capacity to 3000 spectators each day, with free tickets available via Ticketek under a randomised ballot process, you can also catch all the action live at www.worldsurfleague.com, 7Plus, Fox Sports or Kayo. In the lead-up to the event, local contenders Ryan Callinan and Philippa Anderson took time out to take part in an exclusive Q&A with intouch Magazine, discussing their love of the sport, the highs and lows of their careers and their thoughts on taking part in the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup 2021. Check out the extracts below, or visit www.intouchmagazine.com.au to read the full interviews.

TALKING TUBES WITH Team-Merewether! RYAN CALLINAN You grew up a few streets back from Merewether Beach and have been surfing there all your life – how amazing will it be to see it host this year’s Australian CT opener? It will be a pretty incredible experience. I have surfed in the WQS 12 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

event here a lot, and the hometown crowd and just being at home is always a good feeling, but to see it jump to a world tour event is just another level above and for it to be the first event in Australia will be great for the town and the tour getting back underway. What are your earliest memories of surfing, and how old were you when you began? I was about five-years-old when I started surfing, and I think my first memories were actually around the Rainbow Bay area on the Gold Coast, but then it moved naturally to home and just surfing the small bays around here. Your Dad was a keen surfer – how much of an impact did he have on your passion for surfing? He started everything for me; watching how much he loved being in the water and the things he would do each day to make sure he got a surf in really showed me the love he had for surfing. Which I feel, in turn, made me appreciate surfing as much as I do. What is your favourite memory of being out on the waves with him? Just his smile and enjoyment, every surf was a good one, and it was always just about having fun. At what point did you decide you wanted to become a pro surfer, and what has been the biggest challenge in your career to date? There were lots of little moments that made me think of wanting to become a pro, but I don’t think there was one singular big “this is it” moment. I was just happy

The past few years have been an emotional rollercoaster for you and your siblings, losing both of your parents in such a short span of time. How much did taking time away from surfing change you, and what was it that made you return? I don’t think I realised how much I needed the time off to process everything that had happened. It really made me re-evaluate everything and see what were the most important things in my life. I never stopped surfing because that was the one thing I love doing and can always connect to, but it made me start to appreciate why I loved it again for so many different reasons. We read in an interview that these days you feel closest to your Dad when you’re out in the surf – how much does it mean to you then to be able to surf in a CT tour event at your home break? I definitely feel close to Dad when I’m in the water, and I know how much he, and my Mum, would have loved to watch me in a World Tour event, especially here at home, so that will make it extra special. Even though they aren’t here, the community will be cheering for me - that’s just as nerve-wracking and exciting for me. Who do you think are the favourites for Merewether, and who do you think would be a dark horse? The top guys are always favourites anywhere, but I think it will suit some of the more powerful surfers on tour too. Jackson Baker, as a wildcard, will be great to watch. He knows the wave really well and is a very underrated and amazing surfer. He could be my dark horse. Newcastle surf fans have long had the joy of watching some of the best surfers in the world take part in the QS events

▼ PHILIPPA ANDERSON

at Surfest. How fantastic will it be for fans to be able to watch the absolute top echelon of surfers battle it out at Merewether? It's definitely another level up from the WQS to the World Tour, and I don’t think it will be an event that everyone will forget quickly. Everyone on this tour is so good to watch, and I think there will be some incredible surfing going down. What are your goals for this event and for the CT series as a whole in 2021? I always want to win, especially at home; that would be the dream of mine. And this year, I’m aiming for top five in the world. Finally, for your fellow surfers visiting Newcastle, what are your top three homegrown Newcastle experiences or places they should check out while they’re in town? I would say if they have time, drive out to the Hunter Valley to see our beautiful vineyards, dive into the Ocean Baths, and the food and drinks scene around town is just incredible.

“I’M GOING IN WITH THE PREPARATION THAT I’VE TICKED ALL THE BOXES, AND I THINK I'VE JUST GOT TO FOCUS ON MYSELF. I KNOW THAT THE GIRLS ON THE CT ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD, AND I’M REALLY HOPING I GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE MY SURFING.”

PHILIPPA ANDERSON You were born in South Africa and grew up across the road from a beach – what are your first memories of the ocean, and when did you begin to surf? I was very blessed with the life that we had in South Africa, we literally lived 10 metres from the beach, and we could see the waves from the second floor of our house. The surf was hardly crowded as we grew up in a pretty small town. My first memories of the ocean were running across the road with my family and our dogs, swimming, bodyboarding and playing in the sand.

At what point did you decide you wanted to carve out a career as a professional surfer? There were a few moments that shaped the thought of having a career path as a professional surfer. I was 17 when I went on my first trip overseas to the Philippines after moving to Australia. I was on that trip with Serena Brooke, an ex-CT surfer. I got to hang out with her and hear about her surfing career, share stories and being able to hear about her career sparked a little light bulb.

I started to have good results in the Australian competitions but constantly losing to Tyler Wright, Laura Enever and Sally Fitz (Fitzgibbon). When I got sponsored by Roxy and got to rub shoulders with Sally from the age of 18, and representing Australia at the ISA World Games on numerous occasions, I started getting really excited about a life as a professional surfer. During all this time, too, my brother was getting pretty big in the surfing scene. Seeing him travel all around the (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) world, surfing these insane waves and hearing about all his travels definitely made me want to work hard and want to be a professional surfer and win WCT events. Who would you say has had the most significant impact on your career as a surfer? My family, hands down. They have been there from the beginning. My Dad and I have made a great team from the start. We definitely argue, disagree and get annoyed at each other because we are so similar, but my Dad, hands down, has been there for me through thick and thin. You’ve been so close to reaching the CT series so many times – have you ever come close to packing it in and walking away from competition? I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t have those thoughts. I said before I had those times where I wanted to quit. It hurt a lot, every year, every event, every wave, every training session to then 12 months later almost get there, it sucked. The financial side of things was pretty tight too, which adds extra pressure and the call to go get a job. But come every December, another sponsor would approach me and offer some financial support, which I would see as a sign from God to give it another go for the next year. And how did it feel to finally get the call-up as a wildcard for the Newcastle event? I was pretty darn excited. I got off the phone and was like trying to get the words out to my Mum in the kitchen! I’ve had two previous WCT appearances; I won the Roxy Pro Trials and got an injury replacement due to being two off from qualifying the year prior. Being rewarded

14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

with the wildcard is epic like all my hard work is being rewarded. You’ve had some decent lead-up results in the past couple of months in the QS competition – how much do you think that will help you in preparation for your CT debut? I think the consistency helps with the mental game going into the CT event and just the preparation of having surfed over ten heats in the last month getting back into that rhythm of surfing heats. I think the QS standard is high, but the CT is a whole other level. I’m going in with the preparation that I’ve ticked all the boxes, and I think I've just got to focus on myself. I know that the girls on the CT are the best in the world, and I’m really hoping I get the opportunity to showcase my surfing. Finally, for your fellow surfers visiting Newcastle, what are your top three homegrown Newcastle experiences or places they should check out while they’re in town? Newcastle is such a beautiful place. It’s big enough that it has everything, but it’s not so big that it’s a frustrating busy city with crowds. There’s so much on offer. I enjoy a late evening walk with the girls, and if you time it right, you can get to the top of the Anzac walk and watch the sunset over the whole of Newcastle. There are amazing cafés and restaurants all over Newcastle with tastes to suit everyone’s palates. My favourite is The Drop In Espresso Bar in Wallsend, only 10 minutes out of town. They have great coffee, incredibly delicious cookies and very healthy food bowls, vegan options too. If I don’t work and get a sleep-in, I’ll walk across the road to this little café

van in Adamstown, get a coffee or croissant then sit in our sunroom overlooking the quiet park, nice and peaceful. P Read the full interviews at www.intouchmagazine.com.au

DIRECT FROM THE FARM TO YOUR PLATE! Rain, hail or shine, there’s one Sunday activity that’s always there for us in Newcastle – Newcastle City Farmers Markets! Admittedly more comfortable on a sunny Sunday, a trip to Newcastle Showgrounds on any given Sunday is still a great way to pass the time, strolling through stalls filled with fresh, seasonal produce for you to nibble on while you wander around or throw together at your next dinner party. If you’re in the Lake Mac area, get along to the Lake Macquarie City Farmers Market at Speers Point every 2nd and 4th Saturday – and keep your eyes open for the Glendale City Farmers Market coming soon to Stockland Glendale. Not only will you find the best local produce all in one place at your local Farmers Markets, but it’s the most sustainable way to support your local producers and get straight to the source with a unique opportunity to interact directly with farmers, producers and artisans. Where else but at ‘The Farmers’ can you buy groceries direct from the farmer – from the person who grew, nurtured and made the product. You not only get to meet the maker and the farmer, but you can also ask about how and where it’s grown or made, how best to store or use it. And it's not just fresh fruit and veggies on offer. Not only can you stock up the pantry with locally sourced fresh produce, but you can also indulge in a delicious market lunch from one of the many food trucks. Taste wines from boutique wineries, try gourmet sauces, jams and chutneys, freshly baked organic bread, handmade pasta, organic eggs and beef and of course, fresh seafood (an essential ingredient for Easter!). For more information about the markets, visit www.newcastlecityfarmersmarket.com.au – see you on Sunday (or Saturday!).

THERE’S SOMETHING NEW AND SPARKLY IN WINE COUNTRY – AND IT’S NOT WINE! SMALL MOUTH IS A SMALL FAMILY-RUN DISTILLERY THAT SPECIALISES IN HAND-CRAFTED, QUALITY SPIRITS, INCLUDING SHIMMERING VODKAS AND GINS. AND YOU CAN NOW TASTE THEM ALL AT THEIR NEW TASTING ROOM AT HUNTER VALLEY GARDENS SHOPPING VILLAGE. If you think the Small Mouth brand seems a bit familiar – it is! Small Mouth Vodka has been online for years; however, the tasting room in Pokolbin has been open for only three months, and during this short time, the team has been working hard to expand the range. "Since the tasting rooms opened, we have grown our range and now have several gins, vodkas and liqueurs to offer customers,” said co-Manager Jaydan Addis. Small Mouth is made up of an enthusiastic team of mostly family members. Paul Addis is both co-owner (with Peter Clarke from The Garden Cellars next door) and the head distiller. Paul has been distilling for eight years. Melloney Addis, Kaitlyn Addis and co-Managers Jaydan Addis and Mia Thompson all work in-store conducting tastings and sales. Mia and Jaydan also work on the online side of the business as well. “Small Mouth is a hand-crafted, premium spirit that is organic and vegan friendly. Our spirits are distilled in traditional copper pot stills and utilise freshly captured

rainwater. We add edible glitter to our products so you can shimmer on the inside, just like you do on the outside!” said Jaydan. Since the tasting room opened, the team has been surprised by the variety of customers that walk through the doors – ranging from fresh-faced 18 year-olds to 92-year-old connoisseurs. “For us, this is evidence that we are on the right track. We aim to create a premium and innovative product that can be used to make even simple cocktails unique and delicious. We’re dedicated to providing a product that excites all ages,” said Jaydan. Small Mouth offers gins, vodkas, and liqueur’s, ranging from 45%, 40%, and 20%. All products have a shimmering glitter in them that are food-grade safe so that when you add any mixer with bubbles, the glitter will continuously move in your drink. Top sellers include the Watermelon Liqueur and the Pina Colada, especially in the Summer heat. Both drinks are delicious ‘on the rocks’, with lemonade or with soda water. They are open seven days, 10am–5pm and try to show even the non-spirit drinkers that with their products its different, that it is smoother and overall a more enjoyable experience than their competitors. CELEBRATING

SENIORS!

Growing older should be fun! To help inspire you, there is an exciting selection of events happening this month, ranging from chair yoga to propagating plants, which aim to celebrate Lake Mac’s over-55s as part of this year’s NSW Seniors Festival. While NSW Seniors Festival – the largest celebration of seniors in the southern hemisphere – officially runs from 13–24 April this year, Council is hosting its Let’s Celebrate Seniors program for the entire month of April. Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships Andrew Bryant said seniors were encouraged to participate in the Seniors Festival program. “We want to celebrate our over-55s community, so we are encouraging people to get out and enjoy new experiences, continue learning, stay active and connect to their communities,” Mr Bryant said. “Our older generations contribute so much to the community, but we need to

ensure they remain engaged and enriched, particularly while the effects of COVID-19 are still felt." Activities on offer include a gardening workshop at Speers Point Park, dance mobility classes at Rathmines Theatre, a birdwatching walk through Belmont Wetlands and a talk at Swansea Centre by reptile expert Teresa Purnell designed to reduce fear and increase awareness of snakes in our environment. Ageing and Disability Officer Peta McGrath said the event showcased the services and resources available for seniors in Lake Macquarie. “There’s something exciting on offer for everyone this month in a COVIDsafe environment,” Ms McGrath said. “We also have free tickets to selected Let’s Celebrate Seniors in Lake Mac events which are up for grabs for those who sign up to our monthly Over 55s program.”

Join in the festival fun and events or the Over 55s program by calling 4921 0333 or by booking online at www.lakemac.com. au/for-residents/community/over-55s/ seniors-festival-in-lake-mac

AUSTRALIAN PARADISE WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON With her mother enchanted by English and doing courses, Diana Paola McClelland was also charmed by the “pretty” language, especially through television shows like Friends. After many English courses and failures, Diana decided to study abroad for six months. She was tossing up between the United States or South Africa; however, her brother was in Australia and described it as “paradise.” On 5 May 2009, Diana left Bogota as an engineering university graduate bound for Sydney for a six-month English study course. “My study trip turned into a life decision - with Australian residency, husband, daughter and a career change. Although I miss parts of my Colombian life, I am happy to be here. What I like the most about Australia is I enjoy my life.” Moving to Australia was never her plan. Even though on leaving, her father, through tears, warned, “you will never come back.” “I was adamant that I would be returning home to Bogota. I had an engineering job, boyfriend and everything there – family, friends, volleyball and being a jet ski racing champion.” Diana admits she did not know much about Australia, except it was the land of kangaroos, koalas, English and Bondi Rescue. “As a family, we liked Australia because we loved tennis. My dad, brother and I would get up at 3am in the morning to watch the Australian Open.” Like any change, living in Sydney was not easy. For the first three months, she lived with her brother, and they fought, worked as a cleaner and was despondent as she wanted to be an engineer. Determined, pragmatic and optimistic, Diana moved into share accommodation, found a new job and started to settle into her new lifestyle. “As a nanny, I was able to practise my English with the kids by talking with them. They showed me things and were patient with me.”

After finishing her English course, Diana studied a Diploma in Business Management and intended to go back to Bogota in April 2011. However, fate had another idea, and she met Daniel McClelland in March. By June, Diana was moving to Newcastle and applying for her residency. From there, the couple married in 2016 and their daughter Georgia was born in 2018. After several career changes, Diana is building two businesses – Toco Yoga specialising in movement for people in over 55s villages and aged care and Funwear quirky animal raincoats for toddlers. “I am very happy with my English, every day I learn more, and it is fun. I still make mistakes, but who cares.” She has seen koalas and kangaroos and loved Bondi Beach, especially its proximity, as the seaside was an 18-hour drive from Bogota. “I have been to the Australian Open three times. Each time was fantastic, the best thing ever.” There have been return trips to Colombia to visit family, friends and for Daniel and Georgia to understand the country and its culture. With her move to Australia, Diana accomplished several of her bucket list wishes - learn another language, move to another country and immerse herself into the culture. However, raising a daughter to be a good person to herself and others is Diana’s legacy and priority. With this in mind, Diana and Daniel are converting a bus into a motorhome so that the family can travel around Australia over the Christmas holidays. “What I have learnt in Australia is you can achieve anything you want. If you really want it, there is no limit. There is always something in you that says go there or there. You should not ever stop searching. If I had, I would be an engineer and not a yoga instructor, which I love! And especially the community and learning there is more out there than yourself.” www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 33

Why it's Never too late

to Join a Gym!

The story of how a 69-year-old man inspired an entire gym WORDS GJENAE ROSEKELLY, PLANET FITNESS IF YOU’VE BEEN FEELING THE TURBULENT EMOTIONAL WAVES OF WANING MOTIVATION LATELY, FOLLOWED BY GUILT FOR NOT ATTENDING THE GYM, THEN THE STORY OF JIM FINNIE MAY BE JUST THE INSPIRATION YOU NEED TO GET STARTED. Jim is 69 years old, but the staff at Planet Fitness Charlestown think he may just be the fittest man in the gym (or at least in heart and spirit). Jim attended his 225th consecutive PowerCamp functional training class this week, having gone every day since the gym re-opened in June 2020 following the Covid-19 shutdown. Jim has said that organising his life to fit in the optimum amount of time he devotes to his fitness program was initially a challenge but something he eventually overcame. His story raises the importance of both consistency and the mental health benefits that come from social interactions

at the gym. You don’t need to be a superhero and go every day like Jim, but his encouraging words and inner strength is enough to get even the most difficultly motivated on their feet. Jim Finnie has been competing around the world in Cross-Country Ski Racing for several years, and in 2020 he was proudly the oldest Australian still competing on the international circuit. He has completed 18 marathons and three half marathon Cross-Country Ski races and would have expected this number to be higher if it wasn’t for injuries. Although Covid-19 slowed competition down, Jim has dedicated himself to attending Functional Training classes to maintain his fitness and has no plans to stop competing anytime soon. “The Worldloppet Series of International Races has existed for 45 years and now runs in 20 countries, and I've raced in 14. In that time, thousands of Australians have participated in at least some of the races. Only 79 Australians have been

awarded either a Gold or Silver Medal. I've been fortunate enough to be one of the only 17 Australians who have been awarded two or more Gold Medals,” said Jim. Jim has his fingers crossed on getting overseas to compete this year (if permitted), as he only needs to compete for one more full marathon overseas to be eligible for a third Gold Medal. And then he will join only four Australians to have ever achieved this. How did he get here? Jim jokes about how he didn’t perform well initially, but he was so dedicated to improving his fitness that he joined the gym. “Before I entered a gym, I was under the impression that it would be filled with young, fit people, unlike myself. It was refreshing to find in Planet Fitness people of all ages and fitness levels in a judgement-free environment,” said Jim. The entire community at Planet Fitness is behind Jim. It wouldn’t be the same without seeing his smiling face and hearing his incredible stories every day. He offers continuous support to those around him and loves dropping pieces of wisdom from his years of training.

JIM LEAVES US WITH THIS PEARL: “I've seen too many people who want 'instant results’ start at too high a level and quit as their muscles are sore or they don't get the results as soon as they expect. Getting expert advice, being realistic with your short-term aims and consistent with your approach can be very rewarding, as I have found with many years of association with Planet Fitness Charlestown and especially PowerCamp.”

SURFING FOR LIFE

Get Connected with Lake Mac’s Digital Literacy Sessions

WORDS INGER VILLADSEN - NINEWAYS CHIROPRACTIC

Lake Mac Libraries is hosting a series of digital literacy sessions as part of the Be Connected program for older citizens interested in gaining new skills. Mature Aged Services Officer Fiona Watson said the program paired local volunteers with participants to teach various topics, from how to identify online scams to creating social media accounts. Ms Watson said the program was an opportunity for different community members to collaborate in a fulfilling way for both participants and volunteers. “This past year has taught us how important it is to stay connected virtually,” Ms Watson said. “If we can help teach people how to video-call a grandchild or join a social group on Facebook, we are helping with enrichment and preventing social isolation.” “It can feel daunting trying to navigate the online world, but this program can help make it a little easier.” The initiative takes place at libraries across Lake Macquarie, with sessions currently available at Toronto, Charlestown, Morisset and Swansea. Once a participant has booked in, a volunteer will tailor the lesson to fit participants’ experience level and interests. “Each volunteer has been given digital mentor training, as well as site-specific inductions,” Ms Watson said. Program participant Carol McMurray said the digital literary sessions had helped her understand the technology and how to use it. “I’m really enjoying the program so far,” said Ms McMurray. “I’ve learnt how to send photos, search for information on the internet and print.” For all participants' safety and well-being, social-distancing and social gathering measures will be practised, and contact details will be kept for traceability. For more information or to register for a session, call 4921 0400 go to library.lakemac.com.au

Nineways Chiropractic is a provider of quality Chiropractic care aimed at educating patients in health matters and improving their overall wellbeing within a friendly and supportive environment.

IN AUSTRALIA, WE ARE SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AND WAVES WAITING TO BE SURFED. WHETHER ONE SURFS PROFESSIONALLY OR RECREATIONALLY, LOOKING AFTER THE BODY AND TREATING ANY INJURIES EFFECTIVELY WILL ALLOW SURFING LONGEVITY. With the World Surfing League CT event just around the corner, it seems timely to look at the benefits of Chiropractic care for surfers. The Art of Breathing Sounds simple in theory; breathing is on automatic pilot. You will breathe approximately 25,000 times per day. If your breathing strategy is optimal, it will provide the best platform for mental and physical training. The concept is, if one moves and breathes at a sustainable optimal rhythm, you will facilitate more effective fluid movement, balance and endurance. The ability to perform a task for a longer period of time with a minimal amount of load can be achieved. In top-performing athletes, it is essential to be able to access optimum body awareness, dynamic posture and respiration as it taps into the capacity for change and adaptability, which is essential on a moving wave. Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation (DNS) is a system that is designed to use breathing and developmental postures to evoke motor patterns in the brain in order to activate the human body’s stabilising system, facilitating more effective balanced movements. Using postural exercises with breath control is ideal for a surf warm up set.

Physical Performance & Long Term Care As we age, enjoying physical activities becomes less about how much of a top performer we are and more about our ability to continue to enjoy our sports, recovering from injuries and preventing causing new ones. Surfing is both exhilarating and demanding; it is a sport that requires multiple facets of the athletic endeavour, such as mental strength, dynamic stability and agility. Addressing a few simple issues such as spinal alignment, muscular coordination around the major joints, being able to access your optimal breathing strategies and maintain this throughout all of your physical activities. Chiropractic care can assist in optimizing performance and preventing injury by achieving functional joint movements and facilitating adaptive neuromusculoskeletal capacity. And looking after ourselves after the big wave has been conquered? The cooldown is as important as the warm-up. Learn how to use fundamental breathing strategies to return your body to its restful state of relaxed muscles and a calm mind. Relax – Reset – Restore – Reboot. If you are interested in learning more about DNS, contact us for an appointment and later perhaps join one of our weekly Breath and Posture classes, held each Tuesday and Thursday. “If breathing is not normalised – no other movement pattern can be.” – Karel Levitt

If the desire to hang onto the fear (which is an emotional drug, and as such has an addictive element to it) is greater than the desire to release it and experience change (change always has an aspect of emotional discomfort associated with it, simply because it is new and different), then dental phobia wins.

DENTAL PHOBIA

Is it Real? WORDS ALEX HUSZTI - BelleDental

Alex has had a career focused on low-biologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DENTAL PHOBIA? One of the most common experiences that patients with dental phobia feel is similar to the feeling that they are “going to die”. This is a very common statement from dental phobics. Yet this statement – a highly charged feeling of impending doom – can easily be replicated in other ways. One of the easiest ways to replicate this is being held underwater. A lack of ability to breathe will result in a natural response of “fight and flight” – this is a replication of “I’m going to die!”. Breathing and oxygen levels are some of your brain’s highest order monitoring. Your brain monitors your breathing and oxygen levels on a second-by-second rolling basis. As soon as your breathing starts to slow in rate – alarm bells go off everywhere. This is why difficulty with breathing and lowered oxygen levels amplify stress responses quickly and severely (a breathing rate of 6 breaths per minute, long term, is incompatible with life). WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH DENTAL PHOBIA? Dentistry presents quite a unique problem. Because the treatment we are conducting is occurring in a patient’s mouth and the treatment often involves the use of water and water sprays, the patient’s brain is often tricked into thinking that because there is ‘something in their mouth and they can’t breathe. The natural response is to hold one’s breath –

DENTAL PHOBIA, LIKE ALL FEAR, HAS AN IRRATIONAL ELEMENT TO IT. THIS “MYSTERIOUS” ELEMENT – PRESENT WITH ALMOST ANY FEAR YOU WOULD LIKE TO NAME – IS THE KEY TO UNLOCKING AND OVERCOMING THE PHOBIA, BUT THERE ALSO NEEDS TO BE A DESIRE TO UNDERSTAND THE FEAR AND “LET IT GO”.

which has the natural effect of massively escalating anxiety – the patient is in effect drowning in a dental surgery! It is no surprise that these patients dread visiting the dentist. WHAT IS THE ONE THING A DENTAL PHOBIC CAN DO TO REDUCE THEIR ANXIETY? The answer is to learn how to breathe through their nose while holding water in their mouth. Weird, isn’t it? Dental phobics should regularly practice holding some water in their mouth – with their mouth wide open; head tilted back – while simultaneously breathing through their nose. This is precisely the situation they will encounter in a dental surgery. If any individual can hold water in their open mouth while breathing through their nose for a period of a number of minutes – breathing constantly and steadily – they will have made significant headway against their dental phobia. I also understand that breathing through your nose may initially feel as though you can’t get enough volume of air moving through. Try nasal decongestants and be persistent – your ability to breathe through your nose can be developed and can have other significant health benefits (such as improved sleep – try searching “mouth taping” for more information!) Sure, I’m willing to concede that what I have suggested is not the total solution by any stretch of the imagination. It does, however, provide a practical exercise to being able to breathe with relative ease in a dental treatment situation. And breathing is absolutely critical to managing anxiety and stress in any situation. Especially one involving foreign instruments in your mouth!

Do many people suffer from acne? Acne is much more common than some people think! It affects 90% of teenagers, 50% of adult women and a smaller percentage of adult men. All our lives, skin goes through a process of shedding dead skin cells and producing oil. This shedding process is affected by our hormones, genetics, diet, types of skin bacteria and environmental factors. Clogged pores and pimples start when these elements come together in a particular way. Then pores get clogged, and specific skin bacteria can flourish, causing inflammation in the pore and the surrounding skin. Blackheads, pimples and cysts are all part of acne. Does dirt cause pimples? Not really. It’s dead cells and oils in the skin that are involved. In fact, if we over cleanse our skin or scrub it too hard with roughy scratchy scrubs, our oil-producing glands will be triggered to make more oil, which makes everything worse! Drying out the surface of the skin with alcoholic toners will cause this too. The result will be dry, flaky skin on the surface and loads of oil being produced from deeper down.

Is the sun good for acne? NO! UV light messes with the skin’s immune system and barrier function. Not only will it make acne worse, but it will also often darken scars and marks caused by acne. Finding a light textured sunscreen that will not block pores but is SPF 50+ should be a priority for acne sufferers. Can anything I eat affect my acne? There is now evidence that dairy products in the diet can trigger acne or make it worse. Remember, a lot of protein shakes can contain concentrated milk products. Also, foods that make our blood sugar spike can make acne worse. This means that high-fibre, whole-grain foods, nuts and pulses are best, instead of simple, refined sugar and white flour. For chocolate lovers, the good news is that there is generally no solid evidence that it affects acne. It would make sense that the spiking of the blood sugar would still be an issue, but dark chocolate is full of antioxidants that the skin loves. Greasy food like pizza and chips don’t directly create oil on the skin, but saturated dietary fat causes inflammatory proteins to be released from our gut. They can then affect all our body organs, including the skin. How is acne treated? Treatment plans will be different depending on skin type, age, and severity of the acne. There is a wide range of options, from active, effective home skincare, active facials, LED light, Broadband Light and Laser, Microneedling, and prescription medications. My advice would be not to waste money on products with a lot of marketing hype and little research backing up claims. See a professional you trust and who will listen to you, understand your needs and recommend a reliable solution. The Mayah Clinic offers personalised skin consultations, skin analysis and treatment plans to suit individual needs and budgets. Fight be Over?

WORDS CHLOE O'SULLIVAN - ON TOUR WITH THE KID

The story that has unfolded in Canberra over the last few weeks has been horrific by anyone's standards. To date, four women have alleged sexual misconduct against the same liberal staffer who is alleged to have raped Brittany Higgins in the parliament house office of Linda Reynolds in March of 2019.

The women I know are angry. Not just about the current set of facts but that we are still having the same conversation. Every time a woman is raped and/or murdered in this country, there is a chorus of "what she might have done to bring this on herself." Some more subtle than others, but it's always there. It was announced there would be March4Justice protests all over the country, and although there was a rally being held closer to home, I felt this overwhelming urge to be there within shouting distance of the Prime Minister's office. I wanted to join my voice to the thousands of others to tell the current government that playing duck and cover is not good enough this time. A friend whose opinion I value (and who falls on the opposite side of the political spectrum to me) told me in no uncertain terms that the abuse of women - be it physical, mental or sexual - is unacceptable and needs to stop. But he doesn’t feel that it needs to be a political debate, as my side of politics has its own share of predators. A point I don’t disagree with - someone's sexual trauma is not a political football. As we stood on the grass in the shadow of parliament house, the human cost of that game was represented in a young, unscheduled speaker who took the stage in front of a sea of people to share her experience. Brittany Higgins explained how

things changed once she reported what had happened to her. “I wasn’t a person who had just gone through a life-changing traumatic event; I was a political problem.” She told of the pain of watching our current PM publicly apologise about how her complaint was handled while his team privately tried to discredit and undermine her loved ones. The aftermath of the alleged assault is now subject to a government inquiry, and the incident itself is the subject of a police investigation. As a mum, that day was a doubleedged sword. I wanted the Kid to see brave, amazing women step forward and fight. But she also saw that there is a need to fight and that it’s been ongoing for way too long. This was the Kid's first time in Canberra, so despite the reason for the visit, I still wanted her to see the sights, including Questacon and Parliament House. After the insurrection in Washington, I thought better of taking her straight from the protest to the tour, so the decision was made to do the tour the next day. On the second floor of this taxpayerfunded building is a giant Lego model of Parliament House. It is a work of art. Commissioned in 2018, it took 750 hours to build, and the attention to detail is sensational. Christopher Pyne can be seen running through the building with a toolbox because he was “the fixer”, someone throwing a democracy sausage from the balcony and protestors out the front (which made me smile). But then we noticed two offices in the model. One has two people kissing in the corner of the office and a tiny Lego staffer running away in horror. The other has someone sitting at their desk with a skeleton clearly visible in the closet. Everyone on the tour glanced sideways at each other and rolled their eyes. Given the recent revelations, I think that is what they call hiding in plain sight. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 43

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL New birthday year, new you! Adventurous Jupiter sets a dynamic scene. Fortunately, this suits your Aries free-spirit sign just fine. Everything and anything – thoughtprovoking books, study, fascinating people, provocative conversations, even problems and disagreements – can be viewed through the lens of “discovery”. In the meantime, this month, a tetchy Mars stirs up communications. Watch what you say because blunt remarks could turn into memorable gaffes. Since Mars can also bring up the not-so-buried past, you could hear from an ex. If tempted by a carnal re-visit, stop, and consider how this will impact your “present”. Is it worth it?

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY With the Sun squaring up to Mars in your romance sector this month, there’s not much happening here but, surprisingly, you shouldn’t feel lonely or unhappy. Instead, you can look forward to being sheltered from the daily grind, with plenty of elbow room for introspection. Don’t be surprised by sudden revelations - you live by your intuition, so use it to your advantage. GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Last month’s uncertainty and chaos continue, thanks to Gemini’s nemesis – a meddling Mars – so steer clear of launching new projects until late April. On the plus side, the first few weeks are ideal times to reassess plans that didn’t work out the first time. Fine-tune your CV or add bells and whistles to the proposal you thought you had finished. You can always improve upon that initial flash of genius. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Logic and instinct have had their differences lately, but they finally reach a truce, resulting in peace of mind. Many Cancerians find themselves in an emotional state of grace, bordering on spiritual ascendancy. Friends and family could have something special in store for you, so trust them. But, as old habits die hard, trusting someone else’s plans may take getting used to. Succumb and enjoy.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST This month’s full moon on the 27th has plenty of sway, meaning you’re likely to act without considering the consequences. If you suddenly start to recklessly spend money or fantasise about an off-limits new flame, blame it on lunar effects. Just don’t become too moonstruck. This phase is fleeting. When it’s passed – you may have regrettably burned a bridge or two. Professionally, you’re more in control.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER April presents a paradox. Even when work demands so much, maverick thoughts stray towards love and sensual satisfaction. Keep in mind that you don’t have to act on every fantasy. As much as you love carnal thrills, you might find yourself outside your comfort zone. Don’t worry; this is an out of the ordinary situation. Revel in it while it lasts. Be bold, Virgo. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER The Sun fires up your fitness sector, encouraging you to revisit the health regime you promised to start in early summer. If you failed the first time, try again. Even better news: a loving Venus stirs up romantic relationships. If single, you may not be for long. Even just a casual fling could help satiate desires. For coupled Librans, this ardent planet does its best to reignite cooling embers. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER –21 NOVEMBER Just when you’re anticipating drama from one direction, it comes from another. Many meaningful conversations take place this month. The outcome depends on your reaction but think twice before laying the blame on others. Later in April, an inner need to restructure your life releases passions you thought had passed you by. Apparently, not so. You delight in treading the same path as in your younger days. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Who’d blame you for giving up on love? But let’s face it, sometimes you expect too much from relationships. Occasionally, our protective mechanisms hide vulnerabilities but can also shut out others in the process. Free up those emotional chains, and you have a chance of finding, or keeping, your soul mate. There’s no hurry to decide on matters of love, and the last week of April could surprise you. CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY Pluto continues to teach you life-changing lessons on how to use-or-lose your personal power. You can be generous to a fault but tend to give all your energy away – only to be left feeling depleted. Recently you’ve started to see how this undermines your energy. It's one thing to give but another to know when to hold something back. This is an invaluable lesson. April is your time to receive, Capricorn. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Mercury misbehaves badly this month, bringing confusion to all. This planet rules communication, listening abilities, negotiations, buying, selling, travel, contracts and documents, etc. – all of which are affected when Mercury is a tad crazed. So, if possible, delay any important transactions. Also, make sure that all computer and phone files are backed up. Better safe than sorry. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH After March’s cosmic delights, you’re ready to buckle down and get back to business. The planets, however, have something else in mind. With nebulous Neptune creating a cluttered mind or uncertainty, you’ll be lucky if you can get to work on time. Progress will be slow – expect three steps forward and one step back. The good news? Your money arena is blessed but be conservative. TANYA OBREZA was born in Slovenija and emigrated to Australia with her parents as a young girl. THE SCHOOL HOLIDAY FORECAST FOR NEWCASTLE LOOKS TEE-RIFFIC! Tickets are now on sale at www.pixarputt.com.au Thousands of mini-golf enthusiasts across Australia have enjoyed the colourful open-air Pixar Putt experience. And this April – you can too! This could just be THE best School Holiday activity ever! The pop-up mini-golf experience features interactive holes inspired by the stories, characters and icons from some of Pixar’s most beloved films, including Toy Story, Onward, Soul, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Coco, Monsters, Inc., Wall-E, Inside Out and more. “We are thrilled to be bringing Pixar Putt to Newcastle in April,” said Tim McGregor, Managing Director of TEG Live. “The colourful course includes 18 unique, Selfie-worthy mini-golf holes for Novocastrians to enjoy right here in the heart of the city.” “Pixar Putt will be operating under a full COVIDSafe plan in consultation with the City of Newcastle and the NSW State Government. We are very proud that the event already has good COVIDSafe measures built into the course, as the safety of patrons and staff is both TEG Life Like Touring and the Walt Disney Company’s top priority.”

Pixar Putt’s COVIDSafe measures include capped player numbers on the course at all times, physical distancing measures in queues and on-course, sanitiser stations located onsite, plus sanitising of all golfing equipment between users for every session each day. Due to Pixar Putt’s overwhelming popularity around Australia in 2019 and 2020 and to ensure compliance with COVIDSafe protocols, booking online and in advance is strongly recommended to secure your preferred tee-off time.
