Practically Perfect! Mary Poppins Magic Descends on Newcastle's Civic Theatre
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER
IMAGES PETER STOOP
Prepare to be swept off your feet as the world’s most magical nanny, Mary Poppins descends onto the Civic Theatre stage this October. In celebration of the film’s 60th anniversary, this dazzling new production promises to enchant and delight with its whimsical charm and timeless magic. The beloved
tale that first captivated hearts in the 1964 Disney classic will come to life in Newcastle, bringing a spoonful of wonder and a dash of "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!"
From the moment Mary Poppins first twirled her umbrella in the 1964 Disney classic, starring the incomparable Julie Andrews and the ever-charming Dick Van Dyke, hearts have been captured and imaginations set alight. The stage production of Mary Poppins was
brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the original film, in a fusion of various elements from the two, including the film’s songs created by the Sherman Brothers. The result is a magical story brought to life in a spectacular and unforgettable production.
Walt Disney considered the Mary Poppins film one of the crowning achievements of his career. It was the first feature-length film to combine live-action and animation, and
it earned 13 Oscar nominations, winning five, including Best Original Soundtrack. Astonishingly, it wasn’t until 2004 that the original West End stage production, produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Productions opened, before it moved to Broadway in 2006. The award-winning production then toured internationally and was translated into thirteen languages, with an estimated eleven million people seeing the show worldwide.
The Newcastle production is produced by The Very Popular Theatre Company (Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Superstars, Billy Elliot) and directed by the multi-award-winning Daniel Stoddart, producer, writer, director, performer and CEO of Stoddart Entertainment Group under which The Very Popular Theatre Company sits. Stoddart is on a mission to create and produce world-class entertainment right here in the Hunter, and this production promises to be a highlight of the company’s repertoire.
“The production is on track to become the most popular we’ve ever done so far,” said Daniel. in its appeal. It’s soaked in nostalgia and magic with all the bangers in terms of the score and songs. There’s Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Chim Chim Cher-ee, Spoonful of Sugar, Let’s Go Fly a Kite, all the favourites people know and love.
“It’s already sold over 9,500 tickets, and we’ve had to release additional shows to meet the demand."
“The 60th anniversary of the film seemed like a wonderful opportunity to produce such a popular show, one that crosses the generations
as anything you will see on Broadway or the Westend.”
“Musical Direction is by the Aria nominated Dan Wilson, who leads a 13-piece live orchestra. It’s a nerdy musical theatre fact that Mary Poppins is renowned for one of the most challenging scores to play as musicians. The tempo and pace chip along quickly, so you need really skilful musicians. Basically, we’ve worked very hard to ensure that this is as good
Indeed, over $1.3 million has been spent on the production so far, with $250,000 on the set and props alone. The set was designed by Chicago-based set designer Eric Luchen, who also designed the recent School of Rock: The Musical set for Hunter Drama.
“It’s exciting to see another Eric Luchen set here. We’re lucky to have him. The market for set designers in the US is so big that it’s much more competitive than here in Australia. Everything is built here locally, though with lots of surprises to delight the audience, as you would expect from a show about a magical nanny who can fly!”
“There are 200 costumes, all made from scratch; nothing is bought off the shelf. Lainey Donnelly is the Costume Designer, and she is a local with a long career as a stylist and costume designer across film, events and theatre. She has a team of sewers here in Newcastle. There could be as many as 20 individual items making up each costume.
“There is extraordinary choreography by Rachel Stark, who has done an incredible job. In particular, the iconic dance scene during Step in Time when Bert and the chimney sweeps tap dance on the rooftops of London, which made the hairs on the back of my neck go up when I first saw it. It literally had my eyes welling with tears. It was that good. We were diligent with our casting to ensure we had extremely talented tap dancers, not just good musical theatre performers. It was worth holding out for that skill set because it’s absolutely magical.”
Daniel is close to the role of Bert because he won a City of Newcastle Drama Award (CONDA) in 2014 for Excellence by a Male Actor in a Musical, playing Bert for the Metropolitan Players production of Mary Poppins.
“It’s nice to return to the show again. I’ve got a good eye for the theatrics of putting these three-dimensional cartoon characters on stage – the over-the-top Disney energy. I’m good at managing the technical aspects so it flows seamlessly from scene to scene. There are some whopper scene changes. One moment, you’re in this three-story house, and then you’re in an outdoor park. Having that tenacity to push the team hard to achieve seamless transitions is a strength of mine – painting the picture so that everyone can see the vision. We’ve got a crew of about 30, 46 in the cast, and overall, if you include costume sewers, there would be over 100 people working on this show.”
Daniel’s ability to envision the whole and inspire others has led him to cast young upand-comers, emerging artists that he sees as having a big future ahead of them.
Max Howard has been cast as Bert. The 19-year-old began performing arts training as a dancer at a very young age and graduated from the Hunter School of the Performing Arts in 2023. He has been involved in a number of
their hands up. Around 20 per cent of people auditioning are from the Central Coast, including our own Mary Poppins, Felicity Beale! Felicity was perfect with ideal physical and personal attributes, not to mention her singing and dancing talents.”
Like Max, Felicity began her performance training at the young age of eight as a dancer before discovering musical theatre with the Gosford Musical Society at 15. Her first-ever role in a musical was as a dancer in a 2015 production of Mary Poppins!
“Being cast as Mary in this production of Mary Poppins is literally a dream come true for me,” said Felicity.
“It’s a true full-circle moment. That role as a dancer in the Gosford Musical Society production of Mary Poppins was a turning point for me. I knew it was what I wanted to do, but initially, I was too shy to sing in front of anyone. I practised for many years before having the courage to audition for singing roles, and looking back now when it all feels so natural and easy to me, I’ve forgotten how scary it was to make that leap. It’s nice to look back and realise you’ve come a long way.”
productions with Hunter Drama and The Very Popular Theatre Company, including Suessical the Musical and Superstars. He was heavily involved with Starstruck as a student director and works part-time at Hunter Drama as a tutor. He is keen to help pass on his skills to new generations of performers.
“It was a challenging role to cast for, but Max is the right choice. It’s his time. He has that spark that you need, the charisma and talent. It’s nice that we’ve worked with him before and that he’s been involved with Hunter Drama, but that’s not how we plan things. There are several performers in the cast that we know through Hunter Drama. It’s not part of the strategy, but it’s nice. They decide to audition, and it’s an accidental progression. We haven’t set out to do it that way, but it results from industry growth and a naturally created ecosystem.
“We’re also seeing an increase in Central Coast-based performers and creatives putting
Felicity went on to study for a Diploma of Musical Theatre at NIDA in 2022.
“I gained a lot of knowledge and confidence from my time at NIDA. Before now, the highlight of my career was playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid for Sydney Youth Musical Theatre. I love Disney.
“Playing Disney cartoon characters is a strength of mine. It’s nostalgic and connects me to my childhood and the stuff I grew up with. Mary Poppins is earnest, and the choreography and movements are precise. My dance background enables me to embody my character physically, and Mary Poppins has a distinct posture and iconic mannerisms – I know her already. It’s larger than life but not over the top, and it’s fun to find the balance.”
The cast includes four young Hunter Drama students sharing the roles of Jane and Michael. The role of Jane is performed by Neave Paine (School Of Rock: The Musical, The Jungle Book, Superstars and Starstruck) and Sienna

Collins (School Of Rock: The Musical, Billy Elliot, Superstars and Starstruck), both 11 years old.
“I was ecstatic when I found out I won the role of Jane,” said Neave.
“I didn’t expect to even have a chance but thought the experience of auditioning for such a professional production would be amazing. I am especially enjoying learning what it takes to be a professional in this industry.”
The role of Michael is shared between Reilly Mitchison, 11 years old (School of Rock, Finding Nemo Jr, The Jungle Book and Superstars) and Elliot Williams, 12 years old (The Jungle Book, Finding Nemo Jr).
“When I heard that I was cast as Michael Banks in Mary Poppins, I was thrilled,” said Reilly.
“Some of the best parts are walking into my rehearsals and being met by all the kind and supportive cast and crew. I don't know what the future holds, but I know the stage is where I belong.”
According to Daniel, it’s wonderful to have students he’s taught in the show, but he’s also looking forward to seeing one particular performer in the iconic role of the Bird Woman.
“Newcastle local theatre legend Nola Wallace is playing Bird Woman,” said Daniel.
“I revere and respect her so highly. She won the very first CONDA award in 1979 for Excellence by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her work in Man of La Mancha. I’m thrilled to have her as part of the team.”
Nola is 82 years young and has been performing in Newcastle since she was 14 years of age – that’s 68 years of acting. Nola’s
career has been long and varied. She’s worked as an English teacher with a penchant for Shakespearean performance, run a speech and drama studio for 20 years and was part of the Hunter Valley Theatre Company, Newcastle’s professional theatre company before it closed in 1997.
“I’m thrilled to be working with both Daniel Stoddart and Dan Wilson again,” said Nola.
“I couldn’t ask for anything better. These are my people. The role of Bird Woman is so tiny but it’s an amazing role. Quite beautiful. There’s so much depth to plunder with the character and an extra magical component to her.”
The people of Newcastle are the lucky recipients of Daniel Stoddart’s vision for world-class theatre and entertainment being produced right here. He’s creating jobs and career pathways for young creatives, providing that stepping stone to becoming professional theatre practitioners. His ambitious plans include producing a fully professional international tour of a West End play showing at 15 venues around Australia and New Zealand in 2025. There will also be another large-scale musical production staged in Newcastle, and interest in a national tour of Dot and the Kangaroo, a play written by Daniel that is now available for licensing.
This year, we still have the magical experience of Mary Poppins to enjoy with the whole family. It’s an irresistible story, with unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stagecraft, where you discover the undeniable magic of childhood and a spellbinding world of infinite possibilities where anything can happen… if you let it. Playing from 5 – 20 October at the Civic Theatre, it’s excellent school holiday entertainment.
DASHVILLE SKYLINE Going BIG for 10th Anniversary
It’s almost upon us, Dashville Skyline, Australia’s very own Cosmic Country odyssey, otherwise known as a folk’ n good country music festival, celebrating a monumental 10th anniversary this October Long Weekend.
Held amongst the gum trees of Dashville at Lower Belford, the pleasant 3-day camping festival, which kicks off Thursday, 3 October and rolls through to Sunday night, 6 October, has an enviable reputation as one of the finest, family-friendly, live music experiences on the planet. So you could say we are pretty fortunate to have it here at home in the Hunter Valley!
Over the last ten years, this festival has been providing an incredible discovery of emerging musical talent wrapped up with some of the world's greatest.
In 2024, the festival turns ten years old. So it’s a huge program, boasting over 40 live performances across three stages, including top-billing Aussie acts such as Ross Wilson, Kingswood, Ella Hooper, Shane Howard, Emma Donovan, William Crighton, 19 Twenty and a couple of exceptional overseas acts like Hurray For The Riff Raff, Rose City Band, Grace Petrie, Uncle Lucius and even a Buck Owens tribute band called Buck n Stuff.
This is more than your standard country music festival. Dashville Skyline is a wellorchestrated musical feast that casually meanders its way across a vast open country landscape, with a sky above full of stars and songs and every step below another rabbit hole. You can opt to roll into the campground for one, two, three or four days. It's a short stroll into the arena, and the festival is incredibly accessible for anyone with special needs (thanks to a recent accessibility grant from the NSW Government).
While there’s always going to be plenty of great on-stage action, there’s also lots of
opportunity for the audience to get involved in the activities, with two-step dance classes, open mic and blackboard sessions, poetry slams, songwriter in the rounds and on-stage collaborations, many of which feature special guests not officially playing the festival. There’s also lots of stuff for the kiddies to do, too, with a whole play area and planned activities throughout the days.
“Many people have discovered Dashville as an easy option when looking to return to attending festivals. Our older (and wiser) attendees often tell us that the festival feels a bit like a mini Woodstock… or maybe Sunbury or any of those culture festivals from back in the late 60s and 70s. I take that as a huge compliment!” says organiser Matt Johnston.
Considered a supreme festival experience, Dashville Skyline is a festival run by musicians. It has become a favourite for music purists out there and anyone looking to discover their next favourite band. A favourite for young families looking to get back into an easy camping festival adventure and for those who like their music a bit more laid back, perhaps a bit of cool oozed over their country or feel in their folk.
The small music-loving community at Dashville has no slouches. Next year their other
festival, The Gum Ball, turns 20 years old, so they have been chipping away for many years, eloquently and independently showcasing some of the best in Australian music for nearly two decades. Always doing things in their own special way, offering up a magical space to enjoy well-considered festival programs, full to the brim with heart and soul performances from across the country and the world, and this year's Dashville Skyline celebration is no exception!
The festival’s name derives from that of Bob Dylan’s 1968 release Nashville Skyline, which lends an impression of the vibe of this festival. It’s a celebration of alternative country, its birth in America during the ‘60s-‘70s, the culture surrounding the music and the evolution that continues to inspire modern-day songwriters.
One of the main spectacles of the festival is the immensely popular Sunset Super Round On Saturday and Sunday at nightfall, artists on the bill merge around the main stage in spontaneous collaboration to pay homage to their favourite songs of the “golden era”.

Newcastle's Cultural Festival Set to Return
Newcastle's vibrant arts scene is gearing up for another spectacular celebration as New Annual prepares to light up the city once again in 2024. This relatively young but already beloved event, launched in 2021, has quickly become a cornerstone of Newcastle's cultural calendar.
New Annual transforms Newcastle into a canvas for creativity, offering a diverse program of visual arts, live performances, music, and interactive experiences. The festival, which will be held from 27 September until 5 October, aims to showcase both local talent and national artists, reinforcing Newcastle's position as an emerging cultural hub.
Festival-goers can expect a mix of free and ticketed events spread across various venues in the city, promising to captivate locals and visitors once again while offering a fresh perspective on Newcastle's evolving identity. Here are a few of our highlights…
Truth to Power Café
Part theatrical performance, part activismeach event is told through memoir, monologue,
music, film, image, poetry, and authentic and passionate stories from community participants of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds, speaking up in response to the question: “Who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?”
Keen to be part of the live show? Submit your 100-word response to the question, ‘Who has power over you, and what do you want to say to them?’ at www.newannual.com/ explore/events/truth-to-power.
Morphology
Join local furniture designers and makers Jonathan Everett (Everett Creative) and Hannah Cheetham (Built In-Kind) for a oneof-a-kind workshop in the historic Soap Factory arts space.
Prepare to immerse yourself in an explosion of creativity! Work in a team toward a singular artistic vision to create a collaborative timber sculpture – a piece you will not only help to create but also see exhibited during the festival.
Participants are invited to bring an old piece of furniture, something old, something broken,
something precious but obsolete. Facilitators will guide participants in dismembering and reassembling these old furnishings, taking them and re-composing them into a single collective sculptural artwork.
The artwork will be organically developed with input from all participants, guided by the expert team of makers. Participants will be encouraged to etch poems, thoughts, stories and memories into the work as design features. Beyond the immediate drama of the chaos of the piece, the work will have a strong design element and simplicity in its form, exploring the idea of expressing ’memory’.
Rising from the Ashes
Across two concerts, Newcastle Youth Orchestra will deliver a unique program integrating live musical performances, visual art, and dance, showcasing never-beforeperformed works by Newcastle composer Jacob Cummins.
The performance will be enriched via accompanying dancers from the Australian National College of Dance, and a local photographer will present his images on screen, creating a truly immersive experience for the viewer. The focal point of the concert is Cummins’ new composition, Rising from the Ashes: An Orchestral Suite, inspired by the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. This piece will be performed by NYO, along with some exciting guest musicians.
New Annual runs from 27 September to 6 October. For the full program, check out www.newannual.com.au.

Rock Legends Unite to Deliver Greatest Aussie Classics
The highly decorated Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets/The Angels) will join forces with Aria Hall of Famer and Multi-award winner Russell Morris and music giants Jack Jones (Southern Sons) and Rai Thistlethwayte (Thirsty Merc/Joe Satriani/Sammy Hagar) to perform their biggest hits together on stage as the Caprettos get back together and on the road this October.
Appearing as The Fabulous Caprettos, the four will perform together on stage for the entire concert, combining their unique musical virtuosities and stage presence to reimagine some of Australian rock music history’s most memorable moments from the 60s to the present day, plus new songs and surprises.
Dave Gleeson is a rock legend whose powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence have left an indelible mark on the Australian music scene. Born with an innate passion for rock and roll, Gleeson rose to prominence as a founding member of the renowned band The Screaming Jets. He has also stepped into the role of frontman for another iconic Australian band, The Angels and made his mark in radio hosting the popular radio show 'Dave Gleeson Nights' on the Triple M Network.
An iconic Australian singer-songwriter renowned for his distinctive voice and versatile musical talent, Morris began his music career in the 1960s. The release of his album Sharkmouth in 2012 earned widespread acclaim and numerous awards, including the ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album.
“The group’s name comes from a band in-joke,” explains Russell.
“Someone jokingly referred to us as the “greatest of all time” or GOAT, but we didn’t want to appear egotistical. So, we replaced the acronym with the Italian word for goat—capretto.”
The four friends will play a selection of their favourite songs, including Russell Morris’ spirit of the 60s anthems, The Real Thing and Sweet Sweet Love, Southern Sons hits Hold Me in Your Arms, Always and Ever, Heart of Danger, Thirsty Merc pop songs, In the Summertime, 20 Good Reasons, Mousetrap Heart, and Someday, Someday and Screaming Jets rock anthems such as Better, C’Mon and Shivers.

Balancing Capital Preservation and Volatility in Retirement Investments
For retirees, preserving capital is generally their highest priority. As the focus shifts toward maintaining a stable income stream, managing the trade-offs between volatility, liquidity, and investment returns becomes crucial.
Volatility: A Bigger Concern for Retirees Volatility, or how much the value of an investment fluctuates, is a significant risk factor, especially for retirees. High volatility can erode capital quickly, posing a substantial
risk for those who don’t have time for markets to recover. Real estate credit funds are less volatile than listed investments because they aren't subject to daily stock market fluctuations. This capital stability may appeal to retirees concerned about preserving their nest egg.
Understanding Liquidity and its Trade-Offs
Liquidity refers to how quickly an investment can be converted into cash. For example, ASX-listed assets offer high liquidity, typically allowing conversion within three business days. This convenience often comes at the expense of lower returns. Some investors may prioritise this flexibility, accepting lower returns to access their funds quickly.
However, real estate credit funds provide a "liquidity premium," offering higher returns in exchange for tying up money in less liquid investments. Unlike listed assets, these funds can take six to twelve months or longer to convert into cash. The reduced liquidity is the trade-off for potentially higher returns, making real estate credit funds more suitable for those willing to commit to a longer-term investment.
Key Considerations
When comparing real estate credit funds to listed investments, the key differences are:
• Lower Volatility: Real estate credit funds offer a more stable investment with less exposure to market fluctuations, which can help protect capital in retirement.
• Higher Returns: The liquidity premium in real estate credit funds can provide higher overall returns compared to listed investments.
• Reduced Liquidity: The trade-off for stability and higher returns is reduced liquidity, requiring a somewhat longer-term commitment.
Understanding these factors can help retirees select investments that align with their goals of capital preservation and stable income, even if it means sacrificing some liquidity.

SAPORI AT TAILORS A Taste of Authentic Italy in Newcastle
For a genuine taste of Italy in the heart of Newcastle, look no further than Sapori at Tailors on Beaumont Street, Islington. Established by Roman natives Fabrizio and Francesca Virgili in January 2021, this rustic eatery has quickly become a local favourite, offering a truly authentic Italian dining experience.
The name "Sapori," meaning "flavours" in Italian, perfectly encapsulates the restaurant's essence. Here, traditional recipes passed down through
generations come to life, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Rome and Calabria.
At Sapori, authenticity reigns supreme. You won't find pizzas topped with BBQ sauce, pineapple, or chicken schnitzel. Instead, the Roman-style pizzas feature a thin crust with toppings that extend to the very edge, a testament to the culinary expertise of Francesca's father, Rocco, who has been perfecting his craft since childhood.
"We're committed to preserving traditions," Francesca explains.
"Each dish has a story. Take our carbonara, for instance. It's a coal miner's dish, with pepper symbolising coal dust. And no, we don't use cream – that's not authentic."
The dedication to genuine flavours is evident in their sourcing practices. Many ingredients are imported directly from Italy to ensure the authentic taste of the homeland. Every component is carefully selected, from less fatty Italian speck to more flavourful salami.
Daily handmade pasta, freshly prepared tiramisu, and cannoli are staples at Sapori. The dessert menu rotates regularly, featuring Francesca's homemade gelato in flavours like pistachio, Nutella, hazelnut, and zabaglione – a particular hit among returning patrons.
Complementing their delectable Italian cuisine, Sapori at Tailors also offers a curated selection of Italian specialty products, many exclusive to Newcastle. Patrons can browse an array of authentic Italian pasta, confections, and beverages, allowing them to bring a taste of Italy into their own kitchens. This enhances the dining experience and provides a convenient way for locals to access high-quality, difficult-to-find Italian ingredients.
For those seeking an authentic Italian culinary journey without leaving Newcastle, Sapori at Tailors remains a must-visit destination at 10 Beaumont Street, Islington. Reservations are recommended, especially for weekend dining.

Cape Town's Liquid Gold A Journey Through South Africa's Premier Wine Regions
WORDS AND IMAGES DI VON ESSEN
As readers of the August issue pointed out, a trip to Cape Town is incomplete without venturing into the surrounding wine regions! In fact, the majority of my time in Cape Town has been spent wining and dining my way through the Cape Winelands (okay – mostly wining) - so welcome to Cape Town Part II – Wine Country!
Famed for producing some of the world's finest wines. South African vintners have mastered the art of winemaking, with a particular flair for Chenin Blanc and Pinotage; these regions offer not only exquisite wines but also breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and culinary delights that will captivate even the most discerning traveller.
Constantia: A Taste of History
For those pressed for time, a visit to Constantia, the closest wine region to Cape Town, is an absolute must. At the heart of this area lies Groot Constantia, South Africa's oldest wine estate, established in 1685. This historic property offers visitors a glimpse into the country's winemaking heritage while serving up world-class wines.
Groot Constantia's history is as rich as its wines. Founded by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape, the estate quickly gained fame for its sweet wines, particularly the Constantia Wyn. This dessert wine became a favourite among European nobility, including Napoleon Bonaparte, who reportedly requested it on his deathbed.
Today, visitors to Groot Constantia can explore the Cape Dutch manor house, which houses a cultural history museum. The estate offers cellar tours where guests can learn about the winemaking process and, of course, indulge in wine tastings. Don't miss the opportunity to try their award-winning Gouverneurs Reserve Red, a bold Bordeaux-style blend.
The estate also boasts two excellent restaurants: Jonkershuis and Simon's. Both offer superb cuisine that pairs perfectly with Groot Constantia's wines, allowing visitors to savour the flavours of the Cape in a truly historic setting.
Durbanville: CoolClimate Gems
Just 20 minutes north of Cape Town lies Durbanville, a cool-climate wine region known for its crisp white wines and elegant reds. The
area's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean creates ideal conditions for slow ripening, resulting in wines of exceptional balance and complexity. Nitida Wines, a family-owned boutique winery, is a standout in the region and boasts the acclaimed restaurant Tables at Nitida with its picturesque al fresco dining area perfect for celebrating special occasions with family (we have enjoyed Christmas Lunch here). Amongst a range of award-winning wines, you’ll discover the Calligraphy Sauvignon Blanc and Wild Child Méthode Cap Classique, which effortlessly showcase the best of Durbanville's terroir. With its stunning views of Table Mountain, De Grendel offers a range of exceptional wines, including the flagship Rubaiyat red blend. The estate's restaurant, helmed by Chef Ian Bergh, serves innovative farm-to-table cuisine that perfectly complements their wines.
Stellenbosch: The Heart of Wine Country
Venturing a little further from Cape Town, wine enthusiasts will find themselves in Stellenbosch, the undisputed heart of South Africa's wine industry. This charming university town, founded in 1679, is surrounded by the
picturesque Jonkershoek River Valley and is home to over 150 wineries.
Stellenbosch is renowned for its red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz. The region's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils contribute to the production of complex, full-bodied wines that have garnered international acclaim.
Among the many stellar wineries in the area, Ken Forrester Wines stands out for its exceptional Chenin Blanc. Known as "Mr. Chenin," Ken Forrester has been instrumental in elevating this varietal's status both locally and internationally. Visitors can enjoy tastings of his award-winning FMC Chenin Blanc, along with other premium wines, in a relaxed and informative setting.
For those seeking a more opulent experience, Kanonkop Estate offers a glimpse into the upper echelons of South African winemaking. This fourthgeneration family-owned estate specialises in red wines, with their Paul Sauer Bordeaux blend consistently receiving top ratings from wine critics worldwide. The estate's commitment to traditional winemaking methods, combined with state-of-the-art facilities, results in wines of exceptional quality and character.
brought with them viticultural expertise from their homeland, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world's premier wine regions. Today, this legacy is celebrated in the Huguenot Monument and Museum, which offers visitors insight into the area's rich cultural heritage.
Robertson: Off the Beaten Path
For those willing to venture further afield, the Robertson Wine Valley offers a more laid-back, authentic wine experience. Located about two hours from Cape Town, this region is known for its Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Method Cap Classique sparkling wines.
For a boutique winery experience coupled with luxury accommodation, Alluvia Boutique Winery is hard to beat. Nestled in the Banhoek Valley, Alluvia offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, meticulously crafted wines and luxurious villa accommodations. Their Illusionary Red Blend is a particular standout, showcasing the potential of Stellenbosch's terroir.
When it comes to dining, Stellenbosch doesn't disappoint. Overture Restaurant at Hidden Valley Wines offers an innovative menu that changes with the seasons, while Rust en Vrede Restaurant, set in a historic 1785 cellar, provides a fine dining experience par excellence.
Franschhoek: A Culinary and Viticultural Paradise
Often referred to as South Africa's culinary capital, Franschhoek is perhaps the most beautiful wine region in the Cape. This picturesque valley, settled by French Huguenots in the late 17th century, has retained its Gallic charm and flair for gastronomy.
Franschhoek's history is deeply intertwined with its winemaking tradition. The Huguenots
One of the most delightful ways to explore Franschhoek's wineries is aboard the Franschhoek Wine Tram. This hop-on-hop-off tour takes visitors through rolling vineyards to some of the valley's most prestigious estates. The journey itself is a treat, with breathtaking views of the mountains and meticulously manicured vineyards at every turn.
Among the Wine Tram route stops, Haute Cabrière is a must-visit. Perched on the slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, this estate is known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The dramatic underground cellar, carved into the side of the mountain, provides a unique setting for wine tastings and cellar tours.
Rickety Bridge Winery, another gem on the Wine Tram route, offers a more intimate experience. This boutique winery produces excellent wines, including a standout Semillon. Visitors can enjoy tastings on the terrace overlooking the vineyards or indulge in a meal at the estate's Paulina's Restaurant.
For art lovers, Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate is a perfect blend of fine wine, gourmet cuisine, and world-class art. The estate's restaurant is consistently ranked among the best in South Africa, offering innovative dishes that showcase local ingredients. After a meal, visitors can stroll through the sculpture garden, where contemporary artworks are displayed against the backdrop of ancient oaks and manicured lawns.
Van Loveren Family Vineyards, one of the largest family-owned wineries in South Africa, is renowned for its exceptional service and wide range of wines. Visitors can enjoy guided tastings, tranquil garden walks, and a fascinating "Creation Tour" that delves into the estate's history and winemaking philosophy.
Another standout in the Robertson region is Weltevrede Wine Estate. Known for its Chardonnay and sparkling wines, Weltevrede offers a unique "Wine Below Ground" candlelit cellar tour. This atmospheric experience takes visitors through underground tunnels lined with barrels, offering insights into the estate's winemaking history and the evolution of Chardonnay in the region. The estate's restaurant serves fabulous farm-to-table cuisine that perfectly complements their wines.
From the historic vineyards of Constantia to the culinary delights of Franschhoek, the sun-drenched slopes of Stellenbosch and Durbanville Hills to the hidden gems of Robertson, Cape Town's wine regions offer a journey through some of the world's most exciting viticultural landscapes. Each area has its own unique character, shaped by history, terroir, and the passionate individuals dedicated to crafting exceptional wines. Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or a casual wine enthusiast, the Cape's wine regions promise an experience that will linger on your palate and in your memories long after your visit.

Technology is transforming the workplace, and as a result, employees can be contacted by their employer outside of the office and beyond work hours at the click of a button. In an attempt to legislate clear boundaries to govern this ‘24/7 accessibility’, the new Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes No. 2) Act 2024 (Cth) introduced the widely publicised right to disconnect.
Part 8 of the Fair Work Act now grants employees the right to refuse to monitor, read, or respond to contact from employers or related third parties (including clients) that occurs outside of working hours unless the employee’s refusal is unreasonable. The reasonableness of an employee’s refusal will be determined by reference to the reason for contact, how the contact was made, the level of disruption caused, compensation to the employee, the nature of their role and responsibility, and personal circumstances.
As this is new and uncharted territory, until this is tested through cases coming
before the Fair Work Commission, there is no clear guidance available regarding this ‘reasonableness test’.
It is important to note that the right to disconnect became a workplace right on 26 August 2024. This means employers will be prevented from taking adverse action against any employee who exercises their right to disconnect, and any such adverse action that is taken may be subject to a general protections claim in the Fair Work jurisdiction.
Employers should consider the impact of this right to disconnect on their current operations and practices and put in place a policy that governs how they will manage their obligations and expectations of employees moving forward. The policy should provide clarity on what contact is considered to be unreasonable for the business and outline the procedures for employees to exercise their right to disconnect. A policy will help to ensure consistency in decision-making processes and mitigate the risk of non-compliance with the new laws. Furthermore, it is crucial that managers receive adequate training regarding this change and its impact on the business.
If you require tailored legal advice about the right to disconnect or any issues impacting your workplace, contact our experienced employment law team to discuss your needs.
SALT PROPERTY
Revolutionising the Newcastle Real Estate Scene
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Lyndall Allan started her own Newcastle real estate agency in January of 2022. Just one year later, she broke the city’s record for the highest-selling property price in the region with $11,050,000 for a home on Berner Street Merewether. This year she was nominated for the Australian Small Business Awards for Real Estate Agency of the Year nationally. This extraordinary trajectory is born from Lyndall’s signature passion, tenacity, empathy and authenticity.
Lyndall grew up in Western Sydney and, at 19, took a job with a local real estate agency where she was thrown into the deep end of real estate sales to sink or swim.
“They threw a Yellow Pages directory on my desk on my first day and told me to find listings,” said Lyndall.
“So, I did. I was happy to put the work in and confident enough to give it a go. I seem to have a natural talent for it - an ability to communicate with anyone."
Lyndall went on to work for a further 25 years in real estate sales in what was a maledominated industry. Just over two years ago, she decided to go out on her own.
“It was my turn to do it my way. My kids were older, and I wanted to work for myself. I
wasn’t sure people would want to work with me without the big company brand behind me, but I was shocked by the level of support Newcastle gave me.
“One month into the business, I realised I would need help – support staff. Mel Lancaster was my first employee and is still with me now. She’s been a big part of our transformation. In the last 2 years, we’ve gone from three employees to 13. It’s been unexpectedly fast. We went from the front room of my house to a purpose-built granny flat, and then we moved to 200 Glebe Road, a two-storey office space in Merewether. It’s been insane.”
The obvious point of difference with Salt Property is the fact that they are an all-female team.
"I’m really grateful to my girly gang –I love my team."
“A lot of the team are working mums, and they have that natural ability to be well organised because they have to be. They tend to be great communicators and are very
nurturing through the sales process. It’s a personal experience.
“In a difficult market such as the one we’re in now, presenting and showcasing a home is all important. We’ll fluff the pillows and light the candles. We put effort into getting our open homes right. We don’t just put lollies and chocolates out for children; we also run treasure hunts because we know what it’s like to try to view a home when your kids are underfoot. Little things mean a lot.
“We put a lot of time and effort into how we market a property. Our sales team attend the professional photography sessions personally to make sure we are maximising every shot. We’ve leaned into social media and have a strong presence there. It’s authentic and raw, and people love it. We even post our blooper reels.”
The sales team all have their own areas of speciality, and the reach extends to the Hunter Valley, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. Breaking the city records for the highest sales price has pushed the brand into the luxury market, which will soon extend to property management. Salt Property PM will launch this month, focusing on providing a premium service. Salt Property is good at what they do, and the results speak for themselves!
THE MODERN, HONEST APPROACH THAT’S BREAKING RECORDS
Lyndall
“We had heard all the fuss about the new girl shaking up real estate in Newcastle and decided to make an appointment with her to appraise our property. From that very first meeting, we were sold. Lyndall's enthusiasm, confidence and vibrant personality was obvious and very appealing, however it was her marketing knowledge and her no-nonsense approach that won us over. Lyndall is someone you can trust: which is a breath of fresh air in the real estate business. She is honest, down to earth, extremely hard working and passionate. She never once tried to force her opinions on us, never tried to push us to accept an o er, or reduce our price. Lyndall gave us the facts, backed up by market research, and then let us make our own decisions, she was never pushy. Throughout the whole campaign Lyndall and her team were always organised, punctual, positive and approachable. I would not hesitate to use Salt Property again.”
Selina
“We just had the pleasure of working with Selina as our agent to sell our property at auction, and we couldn't be happier. Selina displayed constant persistence and devotion throughout the process. Her knowledge of the real estate business and determination were clear from the beginning. Selina went above and beyond to ensure that everything was taken care of, her communication was fantastic, and she kept us informed and involved throughout the process. Not only did she handle the complications of an auction sale with grace, but her e orts resulted in an outstanding outcome. We strongly recommend Selina and Salt to anyone trying to sell their property.”
Katie
“I honestly couldn't wish for any more. Katie’s enthusiasm, warmth, engagement, professionalism, and attention to detail are all above and beyond - 7 star level. Prior to listing, Katie organised 4 di erent trades to be onsite for some quotes AT THE SAME TIME. If you've ever dealt with trades, you'll understand what a superwoman level feat this is. Salt Property promise to deliver six star service, and somehow surpass this. If you're not selling with Katie and Salt, you're missing out.”
Lyn
“Excellent service and communication. Not just the stats and figures but real input about status and interest. Even down to organising lawns being mowed to maintain the property. No question too trivial - and we had a few as first time sellers. Salt property were very professional on all levels. They did such a good job that even they were surprised with the outcome. Job well done. Would recommend.”
Kristal
“Kristal’s knowledge of the market in this area was outstanding. She was able to inform me of current trends and sales with reliability and honesty. Her communication was incredible throughout the entire process - keeping me up to date on every detail. Every sta member she put me in touch with were professional and caring, making the whole experience a delight. Kristal’s empathetic and warm nature meant that trust was very quickly established and it was an absolute joy to have her by my side.”
Take Your Face To The Gym!
WORDS MEL MURRAY
I have never liked my skin. I know this sounds like a very first-world problem. It’s always just been dull, patchy and uneven. When I’m having a bad day, I’m pretty sure you can see my pores from space. Like every woman I know, I have tried close to every product that swears it’s going to fix all those issues and to be honest, the best that’s ever happened is that my skin was better while the product was on because it made my makeup go on a little smoother.
Some years ago, I think I just figured, maybe my skin is so bad that I will never look like the women they put in tampon commercials with the natural glow. The joy of being 50 means I care less. In my 20s, even though I was the size of a toothpick, there were events I’d missed because of random breakouts that I couldn’t cover up. I spent years not putting my face in the water when I swam in case my makeup came off. This is embarrassing to admit, but I was engaged in my late 20s, and that man never once saw me without a face on because I would set the alarm for an hour before he was
due to wake up, get up and do my makeup and go back to bed like I had been asleep the whole time. Not only does it sound pathetic to me now, but it also seems like a lot of pressure to put on a bottle of foundation.
Even though it’s not for me, it’s part of the reason I would never criticise people who do Botox or fillers. I get that they want to look better, and maybe that helps with a problem no one else sees, but they see in the mirror. I don’t do it because anyone who knows me knows that if there is a one-in-a-million chance that something stupid will happen, it will happen to me. Everyone else does it with no issues, but I’d end up poisoned or with lip filler settling in my cheek. I have friends tell me it dissolves into your body. What!!
Just before my birthday, a friend I have known since my 20s who has always looked like a goddess sent me a message about a free consultation for a place called Skin Gym in Hamilton. They asked me to come in with no makeup, which even now was a bit anxietyinducing, but I did it. I met Madeline, who was lovely. She said lots of words like enzymes, and I was hardly paying attention because I was so distracted thinking quietly to myself, “this woman does not have one pore on her entire face”. She scanned my skin, and to be expected, it was a mess. She gave me four products from Serum Laboratory that she and her business partner Oscar formulated themselves, told me how to use them and I thought that would be
that. She told me to come back for another scan in four days.
I’m somewhat stubborn, and I thought, I’m going to use this religiously so that if it doesn’t work it’s not because I was using other products or not using it properly. By day two, my skin was so soft and healthy. It was like I had watered a plant that had been hiding in a dark cupboard. By day four, I had to run an event and, for the first time in decades, did it without makeup. It is like I have joined a cult - I keep asking my workmates and the occasional stranger to touch my face.
I think the difference is this stuff made my skin look better rather than making my makeup look better. I like that every treatment they do in the clinic is natural, so no fillers. The other thing I love is that they are supporting Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The four-pack of products I used are up for auction at the Upper Hunter Westpac Rescue Ball, and you can bid online at https://app.galabid.com/uhrescueball24 This way, you can support a great cause and sample the product at the same time. Who doesn’t want to feel good from the inside? It's not about trying to look 20 years younger, It's about being your age and bloody fabulous

CALLING ALL ARTISTS! NEWCASTLE
FRINGE FESTIVAL 2025
Newcastle Fringe Festival, Australia’s biggest little fringe, is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2025 and has opened its annual artist callout with all artists required to register before 30 September*. The festival has grown from its humble beginnings, to over 9,400 people attending the festival in March 2024 and 499 individual artists earning a record $125,000+.
Newcastle Fringe is an open-access festival that aims to deliver art for its own sake. It is committed to giving emerging artists a professional platform to produce their work and acquire experience and knowledge to take their performances further. It welcomes artists from the Hunter, Australia and the world to give audiences a greater diversity in entertainment and shine a spotlight on Newcastle.
“To remain economically viable for participating artists, the size of the festival in 2025 will be maintained at a similar level to that of the 2024 festival,” said Newcastle Fringe Chair Brooke Twyford.
“We enjoy a reputation for higher average artist earnings and audience numbers than most fringe festivals around the world, and in order to maintain a personal approach, maximum audience numbers, and work within the bounds of volunteer resources and venue capacity, the festival will be capped to 200 shows for the first time in 2025.”
*Artists be warned, it will be ‘first in best dressed’ across all genres, including comedy, cabaret, burlesque, theatre, dance, music, kids’
shows and even choirs. Artist applications will close once that 200 show cap has been reached.
Artist fees apply upon registration. These fees go toward the costs of venue, tech and marketing. Artists determine their own ticket price from a minimum of $10 with a recommendation in the $20 to $35 range and receive 75% of box office takings which is higher than other fringe festivals. Details can be found at www.newcastlefringe.com.au.
Newcastle is gaining a reputation as a cultural hub, and Newcastle Fringe has played a significant role in its development. Aside from that, it’s a fun, vibrant festival enjoyed by artists just as much as the diverse audiences. Don’t miss out on participating in the 10th anniversary year of Newcastle Fringe – and save the dates –20 to 30 March 2025!
FURTHER FUNDING TO FASHION MORPETH INTO A ‘HIPSTER HERITAGE’ DESTINATION
Maitland City Council will continue its partnership with It Must Be Morpeth (IMBM) Incorporated for a third year, contributing $25,000 to promote the historic Hunter township as a premier ‘hipster heritage’ destination.
The funding agreement will see IMBM undertake various marketing initiatives to drive overnight visitation to Morpeth.

Newcastle-based Creative Agency and passionate regional advocate Out of the Square has launched the 2024/25 Region Ready video and website. Region Ready is an ongoing self-funded initiative designed to showcase Newcastle and the Hunter region's natural assets, world-class infrastructure, diverse capabilities and enviable lifestyle.
The campaign was first kicked off in 2019 to assist and empower as many businesses and community groups as possible to promote themselves and the region. This 3rd edition is again offered for free, with the newly created purpose-built website also housing other initiatives in the series, including the collaborations of Innovation Ready, Healthtech Ready and Hunter Energy Evolution.
Offering a one-stop shop celebrating and telling the stories of the Hunter's smarts and ever-evolving potential, it is an excellent asset to those wishing to seek regional investment, attract skilled talent, and encourage national/ global organisations to branch out here.
"We are incredibly proud of the Region Ready initiative and the positive awareness it generates for the community and organisations at all levels. We tried to take the Swiss approach
by showcasing a cross-section of attributes, putting aside individual needs to lift the region as a whole,” said Marty Adnum, Managing Director of Out of the Square.
“By showcasing the region in this userfriendly way, we aim to foster regional pride and inspire further innovation, investment and collaboration."
The Region Ready project is a vital free resource for local businesses, investors,
and community members, providing insights into the region's potential and the remarkable achievements of its industries and organisations. The new website is designed to be a hub of information, offering easy access to project details, videos, and downloadable content.

CITY CHARGED UP TO MAKE THE SWITCH TOWARDS NET ZERO
More than 1,500 Novocastrians have plugged into the Hunter's renewable energy future after being given front-row access by City of Newcastle to key thinkers, stakeholders and decision-makers.
The three-part Empowering Newcastle event series, which wrapped up late last month was a lightning rod for ideas and dialogue about renewables, electrification and the road to net zero.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the series was a hit with Novocastrians seeking to actively participate in a more sustainable future for their city.
"City of Newcastle has delivered a fantastic series that's put the community into the policy and delivery conversation with all levels of government," she said.
"I was also thrilled to launch City of Newcastle's Empowering Newcastle community climate action program."
This new community climate action program will offer online resources to help participants become more energy efficient, followed by a free Climate Champions training program early next year. Applications for this training program will open soon, with a community information session to be held at City Hall on 19 September.
THINKING
PETS OF THE MONTH
Bruno is a charming lad, offering affection to all who visit and loves a good belly rub. He will sit and wait for his food on command, is eager to please and is very food-orientated, which makes him a great dog to train. He loves to run around the yard and chase a ball, but don't expect it to be brought back! Bruno is a big boy, weighing over 40kgs, is strong on the lead and will need owners capable of managing his strength. He would be best suited to an only-dog household as he is very affectionate and a bit of an attention hog. He is not suitable for a home with cats.
Smudge is a special little lady with some unique qualities that make her truly one of a kind. She has a neurological quirk that sometimes makes her back legs seem a bit unbalanced, but don’t let that fool you—she’s super affectionate and ready to give love back to anyone who shows her some care. Smudge is full of affection, always eager for attention, and nearly turns herself inside out when she gets a good, firm scratching. Smudge will need to be strictly an inside-only cat at her new home.
Please contact Dog Rescue Newcastle if you want to adopt one of this month’s pets. www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au
Holistic Dental Care
I believe and hope that holistic dental care has progressed from the time when “holistic dental practices” used to burn incense and test hair for heavy metals! I understand the concern about toxicity associated with silver amalgam fillings: this is an area in which I’ve been a leader – I’ve been amalgam-free since 1992. If you wish to have your amalgam fillings removed ‘safely’, we offer removal under rubber
dam and replacement with our innovative style of composite resin dentistry.
More fundamentally, Belledental has developed a simple, overarching philosophy around “holistic.” We believe that the less interventionist a treatment is, the more holistic it is.
The ultimate in holistic? That’s where you’re provided with advice and recommendations, and you resolve your health problems. Sure, this is not always possible, but the fundamental tenants of minimal intervention remain true:
The less we cut your teeth… the more education we provide… the more independent you are of need for dental care (dental stability)… the more holistic your care is.
This truth is borne out in many of Belledental’s approaches:
Fillings and Restorative Work: Belledental has developed the Belledental CRC (Composite Resin Crown) to not only reduce the cost of crowns but also to reduce the amount of tooth loss and provide long-term durability and maintainability;
Gum Disease Treatments: Dr Chia YEH has, through her involvement in gum disease research, developed Belledental’s innovative PerioSan technique. This gum disease treatment is minimally invasive, non-surgical and addresses the fundamental infection/ micro-organisms associated with gum disease. It’s also biased towards education so that you can develop your own control of the disease process with minimal support from us;
Bridges to replace teeth: Belledental has innovated around the use of both minimally invasive bonded dental bridges to replace missing teeth as well as reducing the number of teeth needing to be cut for crowns by using innovative engineering around cantilever bridges; and
Diet: For patients suffering uncontrolled decay, we provide written, comprehensive dietary advice and additional support using tooth re-mineralizing agents that improve tooth structure and can assist in arresting decay.
At Belledental, we strive to create BOTH functional and beautiful smiles— without cutting teeth. Many people think this is a gimmic… instead, my team and I consider this to be the greatest challenge of modern dentistry. You see, by conserving every spec of tooth that we can, and creating durable adhesive restorative outcomes, we’re reducing the chances of you losing any teeth, simply by NOT cutting your teeth. It just happens that an excellent functional result corresponds to an excellent cosmetic result: we can summarise this simply by saying, “...if it looks right, it is right”. The transformation above was achieved in 1 day, with the exception of the permanent bridge on the patient’s upper RHS— YES, the bridge did involve cutting teeth, everything else was done without the removal of any tooth structure. What we learn from unimaginable transformation trickles down to give us an edge in ALL of our dental care. If you’ve been nursing a special challenge for the right dentist, call belledental...
September Horoscopes
ASTROLOGER KIM FAIRMINER ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH
STAR OF THE MONTH VIRGO
23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER
It’s your happy birthday New Moon, Virgo, bringing you a deeply personal reset. You feel the winds of change stirring, blowing in visions of exotic locations and far-off realities. While your situation is shipshape, is it time to rock the boat? There’s an emotional high tide in a key relationship. For some, this will mean an important partnership ends and a public change in your relationship status. For others, treasures will be left ashore, offering gifts to be discovered together for years to come. Be gentle with yourself and whoever else is involved.
LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER
The New Moon brings a spontaneous break from the ghosts of the past and the opportunity to turn the page to a fresh chapter. Be compassionate and forgiving with yourself as you release yourself from old burdens. You have the power to free yourself. The Lunar Eclipse reveals something about your health and wellbeing that perhaps you’ve been doing your best to ignore.
SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER
Make a wish at this New Moon, and exciting adventures are sure to follow. Friends and partners are more amusing than usual and could surprise you – even despite your Scorpio super sleuthing! I know control is your middle name, but this could be fun. Relations with children, pleasure and creativity take a (temporarily) dark turn as the Moon is eclipsed.
SAGITTARIUS
22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER
You’ll be browsing job listings online and flirting with recruiters on LinkedIn before I say, “New Moon in your career sector”. You are itching to change your daily routine in that ever-elusive search for work/life balance. The Lunar Eclipse gives you a strong preview of changes on the domestic front. Perhaps it’s time you put some plans in place to make that sea change a reality.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY
There’s a low, rumbling restlessness urging you to shake up the inevitabilities of life and create a sense of spaciousness around the New Moon. Booking a weekend away or feeding your mind nutritious ideas will offer temporary satiety, but deeper nourishment is required. Some say writer’s block is a myth, but it’s an idea that has captivated (and paralysed) wordsmiths for generations.
AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY
The New Moon looks exciting for doing your taxes or refinancing your loans – even more exciting if you can convince someone to do it for you. Intriguing conversations commence with key partnerships. You should also watch for shifting family and home dynamics. Your Lunar Eclipse looks like that awkward moment at the end of a lovely restaurant dinner with friends when the waiter says you can’t pay individually.
PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH
A sweet New Moon in your partnership sector. Sounds romantic, right? It is – in a nerve-jangling ‘why did they just leave my last message on read and not reply’ kind of way. Keeping your blood sugar stable will help you appear casual about it. Around the Lunar Eclipse, other people are more confusing than usual – or you are confusing to others. That’s how confusing it is.
ARIES
21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
The New Moon offers a perfect review of your (un)healthiest habits and the opportunity to experiment with cutting-edge wellness science because why not?! Your body keeps the score, though, so watch for unexpected reactions. An allergic rash from a genetically modified superfood doesn’t help you stay low profile. Despite your best efforts, people notice you, and relationships seem draining.
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY
Though famed for your steadfast sensibilities, you do like to surprise folks from time to time. This month’s New Moon is such a time, another little tweak to life as a Taurus. Move around the furniture to create studio space or extra family members. Friends and group affiliations could be the source of disappointment and sadness around the Full Moon Eclipse.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE
The New Moon looks like insomnia. You want to curl up under the blankets in the comfort of your home, but there’s an undercurrent of agitation spooking the Sandman. Journalling about your perfectly rational fears might help. You could unearth a genius idea during the process. Your career looks brim-full, and you could be fighting back public tears around the Lunar Eclipse.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
Innovative ideas to make (or spend) money land around the New Moon. While the impulse will be to run with them immediately, given eclipse season is imminent, it’s best to take a methodical approach. Talk to a few wise friends; collaboration is also a possibility. You’re fired up and feeling extra emotional around the Lunar Eclipse. The need to travel arises, but it looks bittersweet, like a grey rather than silver-lined cloud. Perhaps it’s the deep desire to be in two places at once? Your dreams meet with reality imperfectly – but take heart that there’s a connection.
LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST
You are hitting a personally defined limit on what you are willing to do in service of your career and, more particularly, the income it generates. Issues of freedom and integrity are sensitised around the New Moon. Money is still incoming but there’s certainly financial friction around the Lunar Eclipse. You want to go places, see the sites, and experience life’s pleasures, but a delay or restriction must be negotiated with another party. It may just be a timing issue, so don’t be a drama llama, and call the whole thing off just yet.
