Your Voice, Your Story
Newcastle's 5th Annual Pride Festival Set to Dazzle
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER
IMAGES SOURCE NEWCASTLE PRIDE
The 5th annual Newcastle Pride Festival is set to take place from Friday, 11 October to Sunday, 27 October, with a theme of Your Voice, Your Story, in what will be a guaranteed rainbow-hued celebration of love, diversity and unity for all.
The most anticipated LGBTQIA+ event of the year invites everyone to share their unique experiences and join in the festivities. Promising an exciting lineup of diverse and fun events, catering to a wide range of interests and ages, from the Newcastle Pride Parade to the
electrifying Poof Doof + Dyke Doof afterparty and the family-friendly Fair Day, the festival truly offers something for everyone.
Newcastle Pride was established in 2018 and plays a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting acceptance within the broader community, ensuring that the voices and stories of LGBTQIA+ individuals are heard and celebrated. Established by Founder and President Lee-Anne McDougall along with Co-Founder Ivan Skaines, it was the passing of the marriage equality bill that spurred them into action.
“I noticed that despite our region having one of the highest yes votes for marriage equality,
there were very few events and no dedicated LGBTQIA+ venues for the community to gather and socialise,” said Lee-Anne.
“This lack of opportunity left many feeling socially isolated and unsupported, and we realised that there was a need for a space within the community where LGBTQIA+ people could come together.
“The original concept was to put on a small festival with three events. Ivan took care of structuring the organisation, and I took care of the festival Management and Sponsorship. The first Festival took place in August at Foreshore Park and was way bigger than any of us expected, with all events sold out and 5000
people attending the Fair day. We realised that Newcastle Pride was well received and would only grow, so we needed to form a formal committee. Newcastle Pride was born.”
Since 2018 there have been four successful festivals, on a trajectory of growth that saw the 2023 Fair Day at Gregson Park in Hamilton welcome over 13,000 attendees, and even more expected this year. Powered by a small but mighty team of volunteers dedicated to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community through inclusive events and festivals with a vision to create a world where everyone feels safe, respected and embraced for who they truly are. Through their values of Integrity, Equality, Empowerment, Respect, and Diversity, they strive to provide positive role models and inclusive spaces for all LGBTQIA+ individuals with a particular eye to providing positive role models for LGBTQIA+ youth.
“We are deeply committed to improving the experiences of our youth so that their lived experience is better than the generations that went before,”
said Lee-Anne.
“Harassment still exists in Newcastle. In our hearts, we hope that things have changed, but you still hear stories of violence toward those in our community, unfortunately.”
Supporters of Newcastle Pride include local businesses, councils and other community organisations. Coles has been a principal partner for three out of the four years and is very passionate about their LGBTQIA+ community, particularly in regional areas. Westpac has been a major partner for two years; Hunter IVF and Holiday Inn Express have been partners since the beginning. Other sponsors include Hunter Water, Wests, Umbrella Legal, Darby Street Complete Care Pharmacy, Equip Multimedia and Homegrown Markets.
The 2024 festival will run across 16 days with several events. Each event provides a unique platform for local and national performers to showcase their talents, whether it's through drag shows, art exhibits, or creative workshops. Newcastle Pride Fair Day is the flagship, free, family-friendly event with over 120 market stalls, entertainment on the full stage and a second stage specifically for up-andcoming young performers to showcase their skills.
The festival launches on Friday, 11 October, with Short ‘n’ Curlies, a queer short film screening at Event Cinemas, Kotara. At 10.30am on Saturday, 12 October, the Newcastle Pride Festival Parade takes place at Nobbys Beach, and it marks the first time that the parade has been held during the festival period. The parade will move from Honeysuckle Drive Car Park, walking along the foreshore path and end at
Nobbys Beach, where Principal Partner Coles will put on a BBQ with all proceeds donated to Newcastle Youth. People are encouraged to bring all the colours of their personality to the Newcastle foreshore. Think rainbows, glitter, and endless fun! Dress in your brightest rainbow, get up and paint the Newcastle foreshore with a sea of pride!
Screamin’ Gay is a regular monthly event held at the Lass O’Gowrie Hotel in Wickham featuring the latest drag shows and the hottest DJs, so the 12 October event is turning up the
volume to wild celebration level. Screamin’ Gay + Drag Karaoke will start at 8pm and run until late. It’s an 18+ event and no ordinary karaoke, so whether you’re a seasoned star or love belting out your favourite disco tune or pride anthem, this stage is yours to shine on! Or head to the beer garden for an unforgettable night with Newcastle’s most glamorous and gritty drag performers, hottest guest DJs, and a dance floor pulsating with queer love vibes. When you have the time of your life, you’ll know there’ll be another Screamin’ Gay event every month to enjoy!
On Sunday, 13 October, get your gang together for Drink & Draw with Wonder Mama at Earp Distilling Co. from noon and with DJ Felix DaKitty from 2.30pm to 5pm. For this workshop, Wonder Mama will guide you in creating your own Drag Star artwork that you can take home. Drink and draw the afternoon away as you connect with friends and dance to the beats of DJ Felix DaKitty at this fantastic, one-of-a-kind workshop.
Everyone gets a rest on Monday and Tuesday, and then Wednesday, 16 October, sees the stunning She Needa running Disco Bingo at the Mayfield Bowling Club. If the written word is more your style, then The Ink Well at Bernie’s Bar on Thursday, 17 October, features creators from across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum sharing their original pieces - positive stories, poems and verse in an evening designed to uplift and incite joy. Labyrinth Beats! At Bernie’s Bar on Friday, 18 October, is a sex-free BDSM and Fetish dance party with a strict dress code.
For those who like visual art, The Owens Collective is showing the Sassy Kunst Art Exhibition from Friday evening on October 18 to Sunday the 20th. Randa Magdi and Lisa Ellen Hughes are LGBTQIA artists who explore the eclectic collaboration of creating colourful contemporary art together. In their third joint exhibition, ‘Sassy Kunst’ is precisely that: sassy, complimentary, unique, vibrant art. The Hunter Rainbow History Group is presenting a free History Walk, Glamour and Grit, at Market Square from 10am on Saturday, 19 October. Since colonial times, Newcastle has been home to sailors, wild girls and wicked women, and all sorts of locals and visitors in search of big
city vice and a raging good time. This walking tour takes you from our town’s foreshores to the back bars and beyond and takes one hour, giving you time to head straight to the main event – Fair Day.
Newcastle Pride Fair Day at Gregson Park, Hamilton kicks off at 11am and runs until 6pm. It’s a day filled with family-friendly entertainment, delicious street food, an exciting marketplace coordinated by Homegrown Markets, and engaging community stalls. The day includes the main stage, a new dedicated DJ dance space, Storytime with Wonder Mama, Glamorous Drag shows, non-stop performance art, live music, Doggywood Parade, The Red Torquettes motorcycles, and a Children and Youth Space. Why not join the Tug of Love or Handbag Toss, peruse the food stalls and vans, and shop at mixed retail stalls and LGBTIQA+ Community Stalls? Bring shade, water, a rug or your sequinned banana chair, settle in and get ready for a wave of camp entertainment and rainbow-coloured fun. Fair Day is a day of fabulousness, glamour and inclusivity. It’s a day for everyone.
Poof Doof is the premier queer party brand in Australia, raving every Saturday night in Sydney and Melbourne with quality dance music, championing queer artistry and uplifting the LGBTIQA+ community. Now appearing for the first time in Newcastle for the Official Afterparty at the Newy Hotel on Saturday, 19 October, from 7pm until 4am, they’re also running the Dyke Doof in a Beer Garden takeover guaranteed to have everyone doofing til dawn!
And as all in the LGBTIQA+ community know, there is no afterparty without a recovery party! Afterglow at Bernie’s Bar from 2pm until 8pm on Sunday the 20th promises the ultimate
recovery from all that glitter, doofing and diva action with DJs and drag performers, delicious cocktails and a pumping dance floor in what is sure to be a fabulous finale to an unforgettable Pride festival.
Supporting LGBTIQA+ families and youth is a core mission of Newcastle Pride, so it’s no surprise that on Saturday, 26 October, from 1pm to 3pm, Bernie’s Bar will be transformed into a Kids Rainbow Disco where children from 12 years and under will hit the dance floor and dress in a rainbow of colour. Then, from 3.30pm to 6.30pm, the venue presents the free Blackout - Youth Formal for youth aged 12 to 17. In the ultimate celebration of love, acceptance, and unity, Blackout is a queer-inclusive youth formal like no other, where you can dance, laugh, and rock vibrant rainbow colours. Express your authentic self in a safe and welcoming environment, fostering belonging, connection, and self-expression.
Once the young people have had their fun, Bernie’s Bar transforms again into a Spooky Soirée with a distinct Halloween theme for ages 18+ from 7pm until late with drag entertainment, roving performers and even a photographer on site. Finally, on Sunday, 27 October, if you’ve still got the energy, it’s the Newcastle Pride Come and Try Dragon Boat Day held at the Newcastle Hunter Dragon Boat Club in Carrington from 10am to 12pm. It’s a free, family-friendly event that welcomes everyone, regardless of experience or fitness level.
Newcastle Pride is providing critical support for the LGBTIQA+ community, building awareness, providing safe spaces for people to be their authentic selves without harassment and having a lot of fun in the process. Joel Tiltman, aka She Needa, regularly hosts the Screamin’ Gay event. He credits Newcastle Pride for supporting him in his drag journey and helping him establish himself as a successful artist in demand.
“I didn’t start performing in drag until three years’ ago,” said Joel, who is in his 40s.
“I’ve had a full career as a nurse, but it was during COVID and the lockdowns that I realised how short life can be, that I could literally die. It was time to do something I’ve always wanted to do. I used lockdown to learn my craft by watching YouTube videos, and then as soon as we reopened, I got up on stage and was mentored by some of the more seasoned performers, including Molly Poppins, who is my ‘drag mother’. I never expected She Needa to take off the way she has. It’s amazing, and I’m so proud to participate in the festival.”
Ben Potts, aka drag star Gucci, agrees with Joel about how important Newcastle Pride is to his community.
“It’s really grown since COVID,” said Ben. “They’ve got a great team, and it’s an amazing community they’ve helped strengthen. They provide a platform for artists like me to perform, especially through the festival and the monthly Screamin’ Gay events, which have exceeded all expectations. It’s wonderful to see the younger generation coming through too, being supported by the older queens.”
The future is bright for Newcastle Pride, with plans for more events and festivals in the region.
“We’ve registered Lake Macquarie Pride, Hunter Pride and Port Stephen’s Pride,” said Lee-Anne McDougall.
“In 2022 and 2023, we held Pride by Night Fair Day in Speers Point Park, which was well received with 8000 attendees, so we’re looking forward to building on what we’ve achieved so far. We’re still surprised at how big it’s all become, but the community obviously needed it. It’s a testament to the inclusivity of Novocastrians that they’ve embraced and supported so well.”

From Cell to Civilisation–Live on Stage
This is the story of us. Our story started 3.8 billion years ago. Who are we? Where do we come from? What does it mean to be human?
For thousands of years, such questions have been explored through philosophy and religion, but the answers now seem to lie firmly within the grasp of an empirical approach to the world and our place within it.
By peering deep into our past and dragging clues out into the light, science can now provide us with some of the answers to the questions that people have always asked.
From the first spark of life on earth 3.8 billion years ago, Professor Alice Roberts will track the evolution and connectivity of all living things in this inspiring and thought provoking seminar.
Follow in the footsteps of our ancestors from Africa into Asia and around the Indian coastline, to Australia, north into Europe and Siberia, and, eventually, to the last continents to be peopled: the Americas and meet some other human species along the way.
Examine the sophistication of some of the earliest civilisations, discuss how we know what we know and why we think what we think, and find out what the science can tell us.

Sun, Speed, and STEM Newcastle's Mini EV Challenge Electrifies Education
Career Links is a not-for-profit organisation that creates transitional links between school, tertiary education and careers for young people in our local region. Newcastle is shifting toward renewable energy, sustainable resourcing, and innovation to ensure a successful future, and it is critical to encourage STEM skills and capacity in our schools. The Mini EV Challenge is a once-a-year opportunity for schools to compete in a fun-filled day of STEM learning, held on the
grounds of Newcastle TAFE on Wednesday, 27 November, from 9am to 3pm.
Primary and secondary schools can register to receive their solar car or boat kit to design and build in class. Students learn together about renewable energy and science as they experiment to make their vehicles go faster. Once the design is complete, students bring it along to the Newcastle TAFE campus to race it against other schools in a series of exciting
challenges that will make learning fun! With cash prizes and trophies to be won for speed, endurance, team spirit and innovation, schools won’t want to miss out on all the action.
The day also includes exhibitions and interactive displays where students engage with industry and education providers, including the COE Solar STEM Trailer, where students can attend workshops to make their own solar cells or enjoy the solar vehicle video game. The Net Zero Economy Agency will host a virtual information hub where students can learn more about what is happening in the region as we move toward a net-zero economy and have their questions answered.
There are tours of the TAFE’s renewable energy and aviation departments and a display of electric vehicles to explore. Then there are the races themselves, where students cheer on their school teams - the straight track (speed), oval track (endurance), the aqua track for boats and the CO2 dragster track for those bringing along their own CO2 dragsters.
The event could not happen without the support of sponsors, including Regional Development Australia Hunter, The Net Zero Economy Agency, Orica, Port Waratah Coal Services, Newcastle TAFE and Port Authority of NSW. To register your school, visit www. careerlinks.nsw.edu.au/mini-ev-challenge

THREE DECADES STRONG:
Rosekelly Family's Fitness Legacy Turns 30
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
IMAGES ANDREAS PROESSER FROM STANDING FREE PHOTOGRAPHY
Thirty years ago, Dallas Rosekelly turned his passion for exercise into a family business that would change the face of the fitness industry in Newcastle. Developed with a deeply held belief that fitness is essential for mental wellbeing and overall health and that it should be available to everyone, he created Planet Fitness, which would go on to become what we now know as Urth Fitness. Today Urth Fitness is managed by his two daughters, Gjenae and Montana Rosekelly, with three gyms at Lambton, Charlestown and Belmont. It continues to deliver on the ongoing and permanent promise of affordability and quality with a welcome for all.
Dallas grew up on a farm just outside Dubbo and worked in earthmoving as a young man. His work was always physical. It wasn’t until he moved to Newcastle that he discovered gymnasiums where he was able to continue his physical exercise.
“Once he started using gyms, he realised that the benefits were more than just physical,” said Gjenae.
“He was seeing improvement in his mental health, and obviously, back then, talking openly
about mental health wasn't as widespread as it is today. He knew that going to the gym just made him feel better. Opening his own health club became his passion. It was a calling he'd felt, and he’s never looked back.”
Gjenae and Montana grew up in their father’s gyms, beginning with the Lambton gym in 1994.
“We would always be around the clubs, either playing when it was closed or being at reception with the other staff members,” said Montana.
“We were always involved and had a view of what work life was from our parents."
"The idea of the gym as a family and community was deeply embedded in us."
“We always felt safe, welcome, taken care of, nurtured and supported, and we try to bring that same feeling to everyone who walks through the doors, no matter how difficult that has been for them. We want them to feel like they are in a place that is for them.”
Gjenae remembers beginning her first job behind the reception desk at age 14.
“Our father taught us his work ethic from a young age. He's like, OK, now you're going to
work on reception; you're going to learn and grow, and I think it really helped with our people skills. We learnt how to not only be a part of a social gym community, but how to help and support those people. It was just such a great learning experience.”
These early experiences of the sisters inform how they run the business today, continuing the family legacy of providing affordable access to health and wellness as a universal right. Their philosophy centres on creating an environment where everyone feels welcome in a judgmentfree space.
“The industry has grown so wonderfully over recent years and now provides so much more than just classes for gym bunnies and heavy weights for gym bros,” said Montana.
“We welcome everyone at every level, and we’re constantly striving to be better. Fitness is for everyone, the elderly and the young, no longer just for wealthy, fit, good-looking people. I’m really proud of that.”
“The fitness industry has seemed to focus on wellness, well-being and recovery, and we work hard to be ahead of the fitness trends through our research, so we were able to be pioneers of that here in Newcastle, leading the way when we opened our spas, to bring that focus on recovery, relaxation and wellness to our members,” agrees Gjenae.
Taking care of their members is their number one priority, with some in their community having been with them the entire 30-year journey.
“We have generational memberships, enormously long-term members that have been with us through the entire journey of 30 years,” said Montana.
“Members that have met their loved ones, got married, had kids, the kids are now members.
“We have something that we are giving people that is not just a bunch of machinery in a room. It is something so much more important than that. We give people a sense of betterment, longevity, wellness, joy, and a social world outside of the pub. We have an exceptional, protected community here that fully understands our philosophy. We routinely hire staff that were members because they deeply understand it.
“Our philosophy is the cornerstone of who we are, and it is immovable. While the industry changes and we change, we adapt, we improve, we build, but at our core, our commitment to our members, their health and well-being will never change. It started with Dallas, and we are deeply committed to it.
This commitment to its members prompted the rebranding from Planet Fitness to Urth Fitness in 2022. A large American company went by the same name in the U.S. and wanted to enter the Australian market. The Rosekelly family were concerned that this American company would not give Australians what they needed, so there was an agreement made whereby they sold the name but then took up a board position on the Planet Fitness franchise to provide an important Australian voice and influence in the company’s Australian operations and expansion.
“It was also a great moment for our separate Newcastle business to be refreshed and rejuvenated,” said Gjenae.
"As well as a name, logo and total branding change- we also did a lot physically in the clubs. We renovated all locations, upgraded with lots of new equipment, added new classes to our schedules and added machines into our Spa Rooms to maintain our commitment to rest and recovery. A lot may have changed in the rebrand with us looking better, however we did not change our price. So that's one
beautiful aspect of the rebrand that shocked many people. We will always be the gym you can go to from five bucks a week, simply because we believe all people should have access to affordable fitness. We may have refreshed everything else, but it's the same family who run the gym, the same staff as before, and the same price."
Celebration plans for the 30th birthday on Monday, 28 October, include a 10-day sale to welcome new members to the clubs, retro nineties themed classes across all locations, food, drink, entertainment, giveaways, speeches and cakes. The clubs will also be open to nonmembers that day for zero cost to join in the celebrations and see if this is a community they wish to join.
In terms of future plans, Urth Fitness will soon be the most affordable Reformer Pilates
location in Newcastle, with the launch of their new Reformer Pilates studios at each club. In addition, a concerted effort is being made to encourage youth members.
“There's some concerning stats out there about young people not exercising enough,” said Montana.
“We see that as an opportunity to get that demographic in here and start learning from a young age how they can start their fitness journey and gain the knowledge they need to exercise for their mental and physical health. We offer free gym memberships to anyone from 14 to 18 during school holidays. We really want to flip those statistics on getting young kids in to get moving and active.”
If you’re serious about improving your health, the Rosekelly family are committed to helping you, and there is an open invitation for you to walk through their doors and put yourself first.

From Family Road Trip to Real Estate Superstar: Lyndall Allan's Extraordinary Journey
WORDS LIANE MORRIS IMAGES SOURCE SALT PROPERTY
It’s been an extraordinary trajectory for Lyndall Allan, Director of Salt Property, since opening her real estate business in January 2022. Since then, she has broken sales records, spent a week with the highest sale in Australia, was nominated for the Australian Small Business Awards for Real Estate Agent of the Year nationally and recently won Outstanding Real Estate Agency of the Year at the Hunter Local Business Awards. Her business has moved from a home-based business to a two-storey office space in Merewether, and her staff has increased from one to 13 – all in the space of two and a half short years.
Lyndall puts her success down to hard work, a great team that focuses on providing the best service possible, her honest approach and the support that she has received from her community.
“I have been so grateful for the level of support I have received,” said Lyndall. “After over two decades working in real estate for other people, the desire to branch out on my own came from a realisation that it was time
to do things the way I wanted to do them. I am a passionate person who is not afraid of hard work, and I believe in the power of authenticity.”
These personality traits were undoubtedly generated from her upbringing on an acreage in Western Sydney where, as one of four siblings, she liked to ride motorbikes, be outdoors and play sports. Her parents ran a very successful plumbing business – her father as a plumber, and her mother working the books.
“I think watching my parents work so hard has given me my strong work ethic,” says Lyndall.
“My father passed away in 2013 from prostate cancer. He worked hard all his life and was taken too soon without enjoying his retirement. It changes the way you look at things.”
Lyndall is married and has three children, aged 11, 13, and 15. In 2017, the desire to not let life pass them by and to enjoy their kids while
they were young led the couple to throw in their jobs and take off around Australia and New Zealand for two years.
“It’s the best thing we ever did,” said Lyndall. “I have absolutely no regrets. It was a great adventure, and the timing was right. I took a hiatus from my career for the duration, which was scary, but my fears were unfounded. In our modern world, which is full of stressors, you don’t have the time to relax fully. Our trip enabled us to create memories 24/7 with our kids, and I’m so grateful we could do it.
“The kids loved it; they still talk about it now. It’s given them a love of exploration and travel, which they’ll have forever. They were forced to make new friends almost daily, so they developed strong people skills; they’re adaptable, flexible, resilient and just all-around incredible little human beings.
“We home-schooled them while we were away, and that aspect was horrific - we were terrible teachers! It wasn't easy to keep the kids motivated to learn. All they wanted to do was explore, dig holes and climb trees. Ultimately, we had to return so the kids could return to school, and get back to a normal life. I could have kept going forever!”
In her typical high-achieving way, Lyndall started a travel blog while they were on the road, Ten Itchy Feet - Travelling Australia and New Zealand with Kids, which ended up with over 20,000 followers on Facebook. Upon their return to Newcastle, it took Lyndall another two years before she made the decision to start her own business, and again, that was because she wanted to spend more time with her children.
“That’s how it started, but the universe had other ideas, and you have to trust your gut and run with what's in front of you. Now, we’re a family-run and focused business; my husband and kids are part of my business world. We are setting up a separate kid’s area in the office with a TV so staff can bring their kids when needed. It’s important to me to honour the fact that a number of my staff are mums, and I want to be super flexible for them.
“I know what it’s like as a mum of three, and I want to give that to my staff. I want to give confidence to women in the real estate industry. If I can do it, they can do it. I love to help motivate and mentor people – I get a kick out of it. I would like to create a legacy for female agents in this town. I want to change perspectives on real estate and bring more integrity into it.
“The business has expanded rapidly, and now it's time to establish a solid foundation. We’ll continue to grow naturally, and we’re open to opportunities. Through hard work and creativity, I’ve developed a brand that can be trusted. Customers have a good experience; they enjoy the down-to-earth nature of who we are. We don’t want to be the biggest, just the best in terms of service and communication, and we’re built on referrals and repeat customers.”
Recently, Salt Property added property management to their five-star services, and it’s already proving incredibly popular. Focusing on providing a premium service, they use professional photos, floor plans and scriptwriters to make the properties stand out. There is a strong marketing focus with the same level of service in property management as that of sales.
In terms of the current status of the market, Lyndall believes we’re over the worst.
“It’s been relatively challenging, especially in the last six months. Everyone is waiting to see what’s going to happen with interest rates. The likelihood is that they’ll start to go down, and there will be more positivity in the marketplace.
Properties are spending more days on the market, longer than we’ve seen in many years, so marketing and pricing are crucial.
“The other big change we’ve seen is that fewer boutique developers are in the market. The days are gone when everyone was buying and flipping. With the increased costs of building materials and labour, not to mention the scarcity of tradies, it’s become too difficult.”
In response to the more difficult market conditions, Lyndall and her team pride themselves on their honest appraisals, communication, marketing and decades of experience.
“Our communication style is more personal than you may usually find. If a vendor needs a hug – they’re likely to get one!
"We create an honest and genuine experience."
"My staff are genuine people who align with our company values of respect, integrity, honesty, and passion. They have to want to be here. We’re team-oriented, down-to-earth, and we support each other. We’re also here to work and then get home to our kids. We can laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously. We’re very determined.”
When asked what advice she would give her teenage self, Lyndall said she would tell herself not to sweat the small stuff.
“I think I’d be kinder to myself,” said Lyndall. “I’d back myself more.”
And from everything that she has achieved, that would be good advice!

There is a country saying… “There is something about that old boy I don’t like about myself.”
It always makes me smile because watching someone be outraged at a total stranger’s behaviour can, at times, say more about the person than they actually want to give away.
We’ve had decades of hearing things about celebrities and sporting figures that tarnish their shine. Granted, it is always a surprise to hear something that feels out of character for someone you thought you knew, and here is the crucial bit: you don’t know them
You have seen interviews with them, you have watched them kick a ball, you love a song they sing that they may or may not have written themselves, and you feel like they are someone you admire. You admire an image of this tiny part of their life, crafted for public view.
Don’t you do that? Do you behave the same way at work with a client that you do when you get home and kick off your shoes and realise your teenager has destroyed what was your perfect kitchen by using every pan you own to make pancakes and has not cleaned their room
for the 17th day in a row? You are still the same person, just in a different mood and situation. Maybe we need to take some responsibility here. In most cases, they didn’t ask for this. Just because they happen to be really good at playing guitar or can score a goal better than anyone on the planet doesn’t mean they are asking to be anyone's role model. They don’t give up the right to be human, have a bad day, or make a mistake.
I feel like we cancel public figures for things that we know and forgive our friends for. To be clear, I’m not talking about illegal things; I’m talking about private things that would be considered a character flaw if they hadn’t been made public on TMZ or in every gossip magazine.
Dave Grohl is a perfect example. The Foo Fighters frontman recently put out this statement:
"I've recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved as we move forward together."
Every second post I saw was someone looking into the camera and talking about him being the worst human being on earth, saying things like “once a cheater, always a cheater”
and asking “why we are making excuses for bad male behaviour.”
I’m not even sure where to start.
Firstly, you are using a stranger’s marital trouble to get likes online, which I find opportunistic and a bit gross. I grant you that some people, men and women, pathologically cheat, and in my own personal life, I feel like you should either try and fix the relationship or you should get out. I have broken up with people after being cheated on because I knew I would never get past it and would bring it up in every argument we ever had, but once a cheater, always a cheater, implies that you don’t believe humans are capable of growth.
According to Sexual Health Australia, most estimates indicate that around 60% of men and 45% of women report being unfaithful inside their marriage. Unless you are planning on cancelling half your married friends, then there is someone in your life who has had an affair. They may have decided it was a mistake; it may have blown up their life, but either way, you ranting about Dave Grohl online ensures you will never hear that story from them because, based on your outrage, you find it unforgivable.
We tell our kids to be honest, to step up and take responsibility. Moving forward, what would you have him do? Being a father to the baby is what a good guy would do. We don’t get to be more virtuous online than we are in real life. At least let’s try and be consistent.

NEW ANIMAL REFUGE FOR PORT STEPHENS
Port Stephens Council has opened its new animal refuge located in Millers Forest this month.
A three-year contract was awarded to Port Stephens Animal Refuge after a competitive tender process. The new refuge operator has demonstrable experience managing successful boarding kennels, making them the ideal choice for overseeing this vital community facility for Port Stephens.
Port Stephens Council’s Acting Development and Compliance Section Manager, Ryan Falkenmire, expressed confidence that the new refuge will uphold the community’s expectations for humane animal care, health, safety, and responsible pet ownership while offering the Council financial benefits.
"The tender process was thorough, ensuring Council selected the most qualified provider based on their facility, experience, service level, and competitive pricing. The new refuge aims to enhance animal welfare standards and streamline the rehoming process for dogs, cats and other animals in their care," said Mr Falkenmire.
"All animals currently under the care of the previous provider will be relocated to the new facility, with a continued focus on rehoming safe and non-aggressive animals.”
To facilitate efficient reunions with their owners, Council urges pet owners to ensure their animals are microchipped and registered. If impounded animals remain unclaimed after the initial 14-day period, the refuge will contact two animal rescue organisations, allowing for a total of four weeks for owners to reclaim their pets or for them to be rehomed through rescue channels.
The Port Stephens Animal Refuge is located at 267B Woodberry Road, Millers Forest, and can be reached on 0468 858 156.
DIVERSITY
Plans to increase housing diversity and streamline urban infill development in Lake Mac are on display for community feedback. Lake Macquarie City Council’s housing diversity planning proposal outlines changes to allow a broader range of housing types across the city.
Under the proposal, dual occupancies would be allowed in R3 medium-density residential zones, while terraces, townhouses and small apartment buildings would be allowed in R2 low-density residential zones.
“The proposal aims to support a growing population and address the housing crisis by encouraging a greater range of housing types in existing urban areas, close to transport, jobs and services,” said Manager Integrated Planning Wes Hain.
“More than 80 per cent of homes in Lake Mac are detached dwellings. This does not provide the diversity required of large, modern and growing regional communities, where an increasing number of couples with no children living at home, older people living alone, and families require affordable housing.”
Demographic forecasts expect couples without children and people living alone to account for almost 50 per cent of all households within 12 years.
The proposal follows a November 2023 letter from NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully, explaining the state’s housing crisis and the subsequent need to increase housing supply and diversity.
“That letter asked us to review our policy settings with the aim of increasing housing stock across the city,” Mr Hain said.
“Greater housing diversity and smaller homes support more efficient use of infrastructure and makes public transport more viable when housing is close to existing transport hubs.”
“Smaller and more diverse homes also reduce living costs, which flows on to make housing affordable to more people.”
Feedback is open until 14 October. Council staff will review all public submissions before presenting them to Council to make an informed decision. Go to www.shape.lakemac. com.au/housing-diversity to have your say.
HUNTER YOUTH URGED TO SPEAK UP WITH NEW SURVEY
The Youth Committee for the Hunter has launched the Youth Voice Hunter 2024. This is the Hunter’s most extensive online survey aimed at gathering the perspectives, ambitions and aspirations of individuals aged 18-35 living in the region. It builds on the top issues identified in the Youth Voice Hunter 2022 survey, including cost of living, housing, climate and mental health.
Open now and running until December 2024, the survey will offer young people a platform to share their voices, particularly in the
lead-up to the federal election. Participate in the 2024 Youth Voice survey for a chance to win a $500 prepaid Visa Card.*
“As the Hunter’s economy changes, our most valuable resource is the people who drive this transformation—their knowledge, ideas, and ingenuity. This makes our young people one of the most vital assets in our region’s development and success,” said Youth Committee member Myles Egan.
“Things are constantly shifting for young people in the Hunter, and we must speak up now about what is important to us. Our voices need to be heard on the issues that matter to us because we’re the ones who will either benefit from, or deal with, the impact of today’s decisions by the government.”
Alice Thompson, CEO of the Committee for the Hunter, echoed her support for the Youth Committee’s initiative.
“It is vital that the voices of young people in the Hunter are front and centre in discussions about our region’s future, particularly in the lead-up to the next Federal election.”
The Survey is open to young residents aged 18 - 35 across the ten Hunter Local Government Areas: Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, MidCoast, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Singleton and Upper Hunter.
The insights gained from the 2024 Youth Voice Hunter survey will be instrumental in identifying advocacy priorities for young people and communicating these to community leaders and government decision-makers and ensuring that the voices of young people play a pivotal role in shaping policy and planning, including in the lead-up to the Federal election.
For more information about the survey or to participate, visit www.hunter.org.au/who-weare/youth-committee-for-the-hunter.

COPING WITH GRIEF
We invite you to attend an informative session with guest speakers from NALAG – National Association for Loss and Grief (NSW) Inc with us to discuss Coping Strategies, Helping someone who is grieving, Christmas can still be special.
Coping with Christmas has much to do with challenging your expectations of the ‘perfect’ Christmas.
It is important to acknowledge that you are not totally responsible for others’ happiness, but also that they cannot assist you if they are not aware of your pain or concerns.
Be gentle with yourself, trying not to expect too much of yourself or those around you, makes good sense, but often needs planning.

Replacing that Missing Tooth…
From time to time, I get enquiries about how much it costs to replace a missing tooth with an implant crown. I often find the following:
1. The tooth was lost a long time ago.
2. The sole focus of the enquiry is the missing tooth replacement.
3. The patient is unaware of the complexities of implant treatments.
4. The patient is aware that they have other dental issues that require care.
The most dangerous line of enquiry is the sole focus on replacing a tooth. Teeth do not work in isolation. They exist in an oral environment that subjects them to the prevailing conditions of that oral environment. By focusing just on the replacement of the tooth, we are failing to assess:
• the condition of the potential opposing tooth
• the condition of the other teeth in that person’s mouth
• the patient’s status around gum disease.
Why are these factors important?
The condition of the potential opposing tooth is of critical importance. Teeth can only work effectively if they have an opposing tooth – no opponent is akin to “one-handed clapping”. (Yes, I’ve seen this done!)
The condition of your other teeth is also of critical importance, determining the ‘environment’ you’re placing the implant crown into i.e. how it is loaded and how heavily it is loaded. Furthermore, would it be more economically prudent to get the rest of your teeth in good order rather than spending a significant amount on one tooth?
Dental implants are more susceptible to gum disease than natural teeth, so your status around gum disease is critical when considering dental implants to replace missing teeth. The control of gum disease is the most fundamental therapy you can engage in prior to any form of restorative dental care.
Belledental provides holistic, planned, minimally invasive dental care. We discuss your care in an open-minded, non-pressured environment that allows you to understand your options and make decisions about your care that are appropriate to your needs, desires and budget.
At Belledental, we strive to create BOTH functional and beautiful smiles— without cutting teeth. Many people think this is a gimmic… instead, my team and I consider this to be the greatest challenge of modern dentistry. You see, by conserving every spec of tooth that we can, and creating durable adhesive restorative outcomes, we’re reducing the chances of you losing any teeth, simply by NOT cutting your teeth. It just happens that an excellent functional result corresponds to an excellent cosmetic result: we can summarise this simply by saying, “...if it looks right, it is right”. The transformation above was achieved in 1 day, with the exception of the permanent bridge on the patient’s upper RHS— YES, the bridge did involve cutting teeth, everything else was done without the removal of any tooth structure. What we learn from unimaginable transformation trickles down to give us an edge in ALL of our dental care. If you’ve been nursing a special challenge for the right dentist, call belledental...
October Horoscopes
ASTROLOGER KIM FAIRMINER ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH
STAR OF THE MONTH
23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER
With the New Moon solar eclipse in your sign, you can empty your personal vessel so completely that you can assess the structure of yourself with objectivity and fairness. Turning your judgemental eye (and I mean that in the most positive sense!) onto what you truly want for yourself brings crisp clarity that can be clearly communicated. Though uneclipsed, the Full Moon in your relationship sector stretches you in multiple directions, and something has to give. It doesn’t always have to be you who’s doing the compromising. Don’t be afraid to disappoint someone.
SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER
What is that strange feeling of discomfort lurking on the periphery of your awareness? That’ll be the New Moon solar eclipse in the most mysterious sector of your chart. Spend some time meditating or journalling; you could have an amazing aha moment, bringing muchneeded peace and comfort. Don’t try to do too much too soon after the eclipse season, though. Wait till you recharge your solar battery at your birthday next month.
SAGITTARIUS
22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER
Disappointment with friends or social groups could strike at the New Moon solar eclipse. Let them go without resistance. While solar eclipses bring endings, they are also an opportunity to bring this area of your life back into alignment, and you will form new friendships that feel easy and joyful. By the Full Moon, you are full of beans with energy to burn.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY
With the New Moon solar eclipse at the top of your chart, you may feel overshadowed in your professional life, like someone else is getting all the credit for your hard work. Try to keep your disappointment on the low-low because it looks like everything pivots around the Full Moon. The promotion you missed out on could turn out to be a bullet dodged.
AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY
You’ve wandered far and wide, and the New Moon solar eclipse suggests it’s time to turn everything on its head and let go of that perpetual wanderlust. New dreams will likely be found right under your very familiar nose, perhaps even in your inner world rather than in outer space. The Full Moon reminds you of the energy and excitement of your early life.
PISCES 19 FEBRUARY
– 20 MARCH
The New Moon solar eclipse in your death, debt, and taxes sector sounds ominous. It is also an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin anew. It could be as simple (cough, cough) as refinancing a loan to save on interest long-term. Have a poke around in your paperwork and see what ghosts you can disturb. Don’t be surprised if you wake up some latent trust issues along the way.
ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
Have you been too assertive in a key relationship or thinking of your needs too much and not compromising? The solar eclipse suggests a key partner decides to go their own way. It’s a power reset that helps you reconnect fairly and respectfully. The Full Moon in your sign points you back to your own feelings about what has transpired, and you may be surprised to discover some hurt feelings – your own!
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY
The New Moon solar eclipse will tell you if you’ve said “yes” to too many things. Or perhaps it’s your body that says “enough”? You are strong and reliable and love to be included, but, oh sweet bull, you are tired and don’t have energy to spare. Try asking someone to do you a favour or otherwise lighten your load. The Full Moon reiterates the need for downtime.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE
Kids and creativity have a moment of disconnection and doubt at the New Moon solar eclipse. While it ultimately plants new ideas – possibly radical ones – and unleashes new avenues of aligned expression, you’ll need to work through a temporary creative block. Wise advice from friends offered around the Full Moon should be accepted with gratitude as long as it aligns with your values.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
Letting go of control in your home environment brings peace, but it’s easier said than done when you are so heavily emotionally invested in the outcome. While you may need to bite your tongue to keep the peace, don’t draw blood –even though you vehemently disagree with your family or housemates. The Full Moon at the top of your chart screams “Action stations!” at work. Your leadership instincts and decisiveness are likely to be welcomed in this situation because you are focused on achieving collective goals, not just personal benefit.
LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST
The New Moon solar eclipse is a great time to try out automatic writing and let your soul empty out onto the page. Don’t be too surprised if there’s some rage in the mix. Better out than in, as the saying goes. The Full Moon in your adventure sector is hungry for far horizons and bold discoveries. You want to travel and study and publish and pray and push yourself to your spiritual limits.
VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER
There’s a hole in your budget, dear Virgo, dear Virgo. Oops. It would be strange if you’ve overlooked financial details yourself, but eclipse season is an unusual time. The New Moon solar eclipse indicates a realignment of your values or irregularities with your piggy bank. Perhaps you’ve strayed from your minimalist ideals? More prosaically, an unexpected expense arrives. The Full Moon helps you face the inevitable like a seasoned warrior. Whatever weirdness has occurred, you are well-equipped to bring the drama to an end and negotiate your way towards your preferred outcome.
