EDITORS...
Covid has kept the Spiegeltent away for the past two years. But now Newcastle is lucky to be one of the first places to host Blanc de Blanc Encore when the show (and the Spiegeltent) arrive at Civic Park this month after sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House and Adelaide Fringe. The tent is a critical part of the experience with its old-world opulence that transports the audience to a European cabaret the second they step in the door. It becomes a magical world that you step into, taking you out of your ordinary life for just a couple of hours, fully immersing yourself in a giddy party-like atmosphere – it's a special occasion. And one not to be missed. Read more on Page 16. In a month-long return of live entertainment, the Civic Theatre will be front and centre with an awardwinning double-bill, while the Multi-Arts Pavillion mima will host an extraordinary world premiere of a newly commissioned piece performed by Lake Macquarie Music Society with some very special guests. Read more on pages 12 and 13. The Newcastle Writers Festival also returns this month after a two-year hiatus. Discover the stories behind the stories with a program of 70 free and ticketed events featuring over 110 writers. Some of Australia's most respected and loved writers will visit Newcastle in April, including Julia Baird, Emily Bitto, Trent Dalton, Nardi Simpson and Tom Keneally. Run over three days, the festival is bursting with panel discussions, readings, interviews, and book launches. Read more on page 22. And finally, April wouldn't be April without the School Holidays – and of course Easter! The chance to get out and enjoy a fun-filled Easter break is finally here. So, we've rounded up the best local school holiday hits in our Easter School Holiday Guide (Page 29) to keep the kids busy and indulge in a spot of family time. Enjoy!

A Nod to The Lake Lake Macquarie City Council and Lake Macquarie Music Society are very excited to present a return to live music with a concert at Speers Point Park on Sunday, 1 May, at the new Multi-Arts Pavilion. Conductor Christopher Bearman OAM will delight the audience with a newly commissioned piece, and some firm favourites alongside guest stars Tenor, Sam Elmi and Soprano, Ashlee Woodgate. The program begins with the world premiere of THE MIMA CONCERT OVERTURE by Stephen Lalor, a new work commissioned by Lake Macquarie City Council. In passionately describing the work, Stephen said, “the fanfare-like opening quickly passes like a brief storm across the Lake.” “The ‘quiet after the storm’ is embodied by quietly pulsating pizzicato strings (like gently lapping waves) punctuated by bird-like woodwind flourishes, expanding into melodic sections
featuring brass, which is a nod to the coal-mining background of the area,” he added. The whole program has references to the lake and sailing. Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake Suite is followed by a lovely pastoral suite Summer Days by Eric Coates with a second movement called By the Lake. Khachaturian’s Adagio from the Ballet Spartacus will be very familiar to many as the theme music for the BBC’s sailing ship series The Onedin Line. The program will finish with Percy Grainger’s Molly on the Shore. Sam Elmi and Ashlee Woodgate will sing arias from Opera Hunter’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata, to be presented on 14 and 16 October this year at MAP mima. Tickets are available at Council Events, Lake Macquarie Music Society website, or Eventbrite. Contact Mercia Buck at mbuck@exemail.com.au for more information.
STARDUST AND THE MISSION
JANE EYRE
What's On
AT THE CIVIC THEATRE THIS MONTH This month enjoy a visit to the Civic Theatre for some great entertainment, including Stardust and The Mission. In this award-winning double bill, you'll meet two ordinary individuals whose extraordinary lives still reverberate to this day. Stardust tells the story of bandleader and trumpet player Col Brain. Before he died, Col placed his most prized life possessions into a cupboard and locked it up, never to be
opened again. But what was inside? Told by his grandson, award-winning ABC presenter and performer, Joel Carnegie, Stardust is a heartwarming musical quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about his life by the things he left behind. The Mission follows "Fighting Gunditjmara" man Allan McDonald off to war. As one of the first Aboriginal soldiers from Victoria to enlist,
Allan fought at Gallipoli and Beersheba, only to be denied a soldier's settlement upon return and forced from his traditional land. Told by his great, great nephew, acclaimed Gunditjmara actor Tom Molyneux, The Mission tells the truth of Uncle Allan's struggle; fighting for country, for love, and for justice. Stardust and The Mission also features musicians from local band Waratah Brass on stage playing jazz/brass. Also coming soon is Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre in May. Witness one of the most iconic pieces of English literature retold in a faithful yet fiercely original new stage adaptation from the nationally-renowned shake and stir theatre co (Animal Farm, Dracula). This stunning new production, featuring original music written by multi-ARIA Award winner Sarah McLeod, will set a fire blazing in your soul. The Civic Theatre will be offering a brand-new alfresco dining experience alongside selected shows from April. Enjoy a specially curated menu designed for the Theatre experience. So whether you are attending a show or a date night, join us to reignite your love for all things cultural. Bookings online.

PROFESSIONAL PLATFORM for Dance in Newcastle
INTERVIEW DI VON ESSEN
ALISON LAIRD PHOTOGRAPHY
For those involved in the dance world or those of us that just love catching a performance or two, Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub is well known both locally and internationally. This month we sat down with Founder Cadi McCarthy to learn more about 'The Hub'. Hi Cadi. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. Catapult is practically an institution for the region's talented dancers. Can you please explain what Catapult is all about? We're a professional contemporary dance and choreographic not-for-profit arts organisation for mid-career choreographers, professional dancers, multi-disciplinary artists, emerging artists, young people, and the community. We provide a platform for professional artists to develop and present new dance works for main-stage presentations, sitespecific locations, installations, galleries, studio showings and digitally. In addition, we support artists through company contracts, commissions, choreographic residencies, and international exchanges.
When was Catapult founded, and where did the inspiration come from? Catapult was founded in 2014. I had been the Artistic Director of a full-time professional dance company before moving to Newcastle. My vision was to set up a professional choreographic hub in Newcastle where choreographers and artists could develop new works, transforming Newcastle into a regional centre of professional choreographic practice with regional, national and international reach and recognition. What are the main goals of Catapult for the creative arts community? One of my goals was to sustain the careers of professional dance artists living in the Hunter through paid opportunities and contracts and to draw professional dancers and choreographers to the region. I have always advocated for employing and contracting artists on wages equivalent to any other career. Too often, artists are asked to work for free, for exposure, or provided fees that do not equate to the extensive training, rehearsal time, and skills that professional artists have. We have achieved this,
as Newcastle is now home to some exceptional professional dancers. Catapult runs a number of different programs. Can you please tell us a little about each? We run five main programs. Catapult Company commissions full-length works by established choreographers, on a cast of professional dancers, with scores by Hunter composers, while Propel Choreographic Residencies curate local, national and international choreographers to collaborate with multidisciplinary artists to develop new work. Now that borders have re-opened our International Programs can restart. This program provides a platform for professional cross-global collaborations and commissions with artists from Sweden, Israel, Canada, America and the UK. In addition, The Flipside Project is our pre-professional youth initiative, bringing choreographers to create full-length works in collaboration with young people. The Flipside Project is not a dance school, but a youth ensemble. Finally, Catapult Community is our outreach program incorporating weekly drop-in classes, masterclasses, schools’ workshops, intensive programs, and teacher professional development. What have been the main challenges you have overcome over the last eight years, and in what direction do you see Catapult heading in the next eight? Covid has been a difficult time for the performing arts in general. We have had to cancel, postpone and re-schedule our programs. Now that the doors have reopened, we have been extremely busy with our professional work. So far this year we have performed Drift at MAP MIMA, toured Awkward regionally, Scar- our dance film exhibition commissioned by The Lock-Up opened, and our youth and community projects have recommenced. So, things are looking up. We are looking forward to re-igniting all our programs again.

BLANC DE BLANC ENCORE WORDS LIANE MORRIS FOR THOSE OF US WHO LIVE IN NEWCASTLE, WE KNOW IT'S A SPECIAL PLACE, BUT IT'S ABOUT TO BECOME EVEN MORE SPECIAL WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE SPIEGELTENT, STRAIGHT FROM ADELAIDE FRINGE, PRESENTING BLANC DE BLANC ENCORE FROM 31 MARCH TO 1 MAY. Produced by Strut & Fret under the direction of Scott Maidment, Spiegeltent has established a beautiful relationship with the city of Newcastle and has been touring shows here since at least 2013. Novocastrians are some of the most ardent fans of his shows with a seemingly unending appetite for the genre of 16
sensory overloaded cabaret, circus, comedy and acrobatics. This year's planned season has already been extended due to popular demand. Some people purchased tickets two years ago in 2020 when it was originally meant to tour here and have been waiting this long to see it. Newcastle is lucky to be one of the first places the show tours to after sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House and Adelaide Fringe. The Sunday Telegraph calls it "outrageously funny and high energy." City Hub – "high-class cabaret bubbling with surprises." The Plus Ones – "Gatsby levels of sensorial extravagance!" A quick look at the show's Facebook page shows fans begging for it to tour to their part of the world – from London
to Melbourne, but for now, Newcastle will be home to the celebrated tent. Covid has kept the Spiegeltent away for the past two years. The famous tent has been in storage in Victoria and, as its name suggests, is an opulent Dutch mirror tent complete with stained glass which toured through Europe before making its journey to Australia. The tent itself is a critical part of the experience with its old-world opulence that transports the audience to a European cabaret the second they step in the door. It becomes a magical world that you step into, taking you out of your ordinary life for just a couple of hours, fully immersing yourself in a giddy party-like atmosphere – it's a special occasion.
When the pandemic hit, there were seven shows scheduled to run in seven cities all over the world, and all had to be closed down in March 2020. The cast are all international professionals with acrobats and performers at the height of their careers. Going from these heights to having to put their careers on hold was an emotional rollercoaster for all involved. "All our performers are international and world-class. They come from Paris, Berlin, Montreal, USA and Australia," said Scott Maidment, Director. "Covid meant that all these performers had to return to their homes, and the trajectory of their careers just got put on hold for two years. I think that's why our latest show, although
created before Covid, now seems to be injected with a new sparkling energy. Blanc de Blanc Encore is bigger and crazier than ever before. It's a sheer celebration of everything that we do. Our performers are thrilled to be back in the game, so they bring a new kind of high energy and bubbling enthusiasm that is contagious and extraordinary." It was 2019 and pre-Covid when Spiegeltent was last housed in Newcastle's Civic Park. The show was Deluxe Deluxe and was as popular as ever. The tent was also used as a venue for a series of additional featured performers and shows during the run, including Wil Anderson, Carlotta, Joel Creasey, Dave Hughes and Djuki
Mala. It's an indication of just how extravagant and amazing the new Blanc de Blanc Encore is that it doesn't have room for any of these additional performances this time around. Based on the original Blanc de Blanc, which ran in 2018 at Civic Park, the new Blanc de Blanc Encore is a completely new show. It is also based on the theme of champagne but takes it to a whole new level. In the words of Scott, "it's like the original on speed!" Blanc de Blanc Encore pops the cork on a scintillating, steamy blend of breath-taking live jazz, thrilling circus tricks, side-splitting comedy, astounding Continued next page ▶ 17
(Continued) acrobatics and risqué humour. Audiences can expect all the beautiful champagnesoaked debauchery from the original but with a sophisticated and crazy anarchic energy and audience interaction that changes the performance every single night. Expect to immerse yourself in the hedonistic, glamorous and extravagant world of vintage French flair, risqué humour, spectacular aerials, comedy and big dance numbers and to be part of the action! Performed almost in the round with no fourth wall, the experience enables audience members to be able to see the faces, reactions and delight of those around them and in front of them, adding to the party-like atmosphere. Performers roam throughout the crowd, and the action is up close and personal. "When you go to see something like Cirque de Soleil, the show never alters. It never changes. It is the same show every night, no matter what the audience reaction is. At Blanc de Blanc Encore, the performers are so highly skilled that they can alter their performances depending on the audience's reaction and engagement. It is fully interactive and immersive as an experience for our audiences." Scott is rightly proud of the team he has put together, with many of his performers and creative team having been with him since the 18
original inception of the Spiegeltent shows. They've done hundreds of shows together. Choreography is by Kevin Maher, who is based in LA but travels to Australia and has worked with Madonna, Nicky Menage and Justin Bieber, to name just a few, and set and lighting design is by UK based Philip Gladwell, who has worked for The Royal Shakespeare Company, The English National Opera and The National Theatre among many others. No expense is spared, and the shows enjoy very high-quality production values. The tent concept may remind audiences of the circus, but that's where the comparison ends because the tent is so unique, extravagant, and extraordinary. The idea of cabaret and variety are reminiscent of burlesque and fringe shows, but these shows sit well above that level of performance and are not burlesque. The content may be adults only, but it's risqué, not rude. The artists are some of the best in the world, with the highest level of professionalism and skill. "Our shows have the energy and fun vibes of fringe, but it's like fringe on steroids. The skill and talent of our performers, my creative team and our high production values set it way above that level." One of those performers is Remi Martin Lenz, who is a host, comedian and acrobat in the show and hails from Germany. He
graduated from the Berlin School of Circus Arts in 2007, where he specialised in the Chinese pole. He's been with Strut & Fret for approximately six years and was part of the original cast for this production. His comedy and physical theatre expertise are typical of the high calibre of talent the show attracts. In addition to the Blanc de Blanc show this year, Strut & Fret are also bringing a little bit of Tokyo and the wonder of magic to Newcastle with the Maho Magic Bar. Inspired by the magic bars in Japan's nightlife districts where magicians perform magic at your bar table while you enjoy your cocktails and drinks, it all takes place in a riot of neon and glittering lights. This never-before-seen-in-Australia touring magic bar is a unique experience that people go crazy for. Step inside, and you will find a bespoke and gorgeously refined bar and entertainment space spread across six spacious performance areas. After taking your seat and selecting your drink of choice, consummate master magicians will perform your own exclusive magic show at your table – creating an unforgettable, multi-sensory and interactive experience unlike anything else. There is a whole team of magicians ready to astonish and delight patrons, including: Kaori Kitazawa - is a young Japanese magician based in Tokyo who has been perfecting her craft for over eight years and

is making waves in this male-dominated performance genre. Sarito – also based in Tokyo, he is a daredevil magician who uses high-risk materials including needles, gaffa tape, detergent, and ... stuffed animals?! Shohgo Yamashita – he studied at the Kyoto University of Art & Design and is pioneering a new genre of magic that combines story and film production. Johnny Balance – the ringleader, is based in Melbourne and has a unique style that can see him unzipping men's flys to reveal something no one is expecting or balancing things on his body to the delighted laughter of his patrons. Jonio – is an international star of America's Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, who is also one of Japan's most awarded magicians. Watch out for the weird beard! James Burgess – from the United Kingdom, this flame bartender has previously worked at prestige venues such as famed party mansion The Manor (serving vodka to the likes of Ed Sheeran). At Maho Magic Bar, James delivers to your table your choice drink: whether that's a sake cocktail, a glass of shochu, or authentic Japanese whiskey. The drinks menu also provides something different to the standard fare. Sip from a traditional cedar masu cup on the highest-
grade Junmai Daiginjo sake; treat yourself to a gorgeous cocktail made with sake, vodka or gin; find love with Nikka whiskey; or savour an Umeshu, a refreshing Japanese liqueur made from an infusion of sweet plums and green tea flavouring. Even non-alcoholic options are available. Scott believes that with Maho Magic Bar and Blanc de Blanc Encore, several visits to the Spiegeltent will be ideal for those who love the party atmosphere and the decadent experience and that no other performances will be needed in the space. "People will visit multiple times. Each experience is different, and it's a sensory overload. I guess it's possible to do the Maho Magic Bar and the show in one night, but really, we'd recommend doing them separately to get the most out of it." The whole experience appeals to a broad demographic – from special occasions and date nights to groups of friends and office workers. Blanc de Blanc Encore is an intoxicating Gatsby-Esque ride that astonishes and delights with its world-renowned brand of opulent, cheeky, edge-of-your-seat theatre, set inside the glittering Spiegeltent and with the Maho Magic Bar on the same site, delivering that Japanese neon Tokyo experience, Newcastle is in for one magical time.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s the importance of teachers. The encouraging educators who help shape young minds and inspire our children. It’s the kind of career where you can see the impact you make in the faces of those in front of you in the classroom. For some, it might not be the career you first start in. But with the help of postgraduate study at the University of Newcastle, you can make your teaching dream a reality, just like Master of Teaching (Secondary) graduate Sinead did. “Having completed my Bachelor of Business at the University of Newcastle, I went out into the workforce for a couple of years. I then decided that I’d like to change careers and pursue my dream of teaching, so that’s when I decided to do postgrad study,” said Sinead. With both primary and secondary teaching options, studying for a Master of Teaching is the first step towards transitioning into a new and
fulfilling career. You’ll engage in practical experience, in-depth learning and gain professional teaching accreditation within 18 months with our trimester system. For Sam, taking the leap to enrol in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) while working as a lawyer was not an easy decision. But, looking back now, it’s one that he doesn’t regret. “I was a bit apprehensive, going back to Uni and starting over again, but once I got there, I found there were lots of like-minded people like me who have been out in the workforce and have returned to focus on something they want to do. “I’ve found that I know what I want to do now. It’s something that really invigorates me and gets me up in the morning,” said Sam. So, if you’ve ever found yourself thinking about becoming a teacher, now is the time to go for it. Make a change, and you could make a difference. Visit newcastle. edu.au/postgrad-teaching

Horo Scope ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.
STAR OF THE MONTH ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL You made a valiant effort to fall in line last year, and you almost had others fooled. But the free spirit within is about to shout vengeance. So if certain opportunists thought they’d gained the upper hand, they’re in for a nasty shock. Major planets are on your side, Aries. Mars expands communications, and taskmaster Saturn waves you through its usual demanding checklist. Consider making lasting investments this year, such as property. In matters of the heart, too, there’s a definite upswing in your happiness. But let such joys develop at their natural pace. Don’t push - entice instead.
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY We all need a helping hand every so often. April introduces a wise mentor who can bring new wisdom into your life. As a bonus, the cosmos also focuses on finances. Nothing less than worthy recompense will cut it now. And don’t worry if less scrupulous colleagues try to steal your glory. With you one step ahead, they’ll be left straggling two steps behind. Love also features. Business trips, too.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY April’s a grinder of a month, but stay steadfast. The sun nudges you towards new work targets, and given the relentless determination that Mars brings, you should expect excellent results. Some, however, may have to deal with a professional tug of war. Still, if you’re going to please anyone - it might as well be yourself. A new image and happier social life add to this month’s delights. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST Keep your cool, Leo. This is one of those months when recklessness or misplaced anger can cause huge misunderstandings. Though logic tells you to do one thing, your emotions could steer you differently. Perhaps your intuition isn’t entirely on the mark, so it may be wise to take advice from others. But, by late April, the planets are back on your side, and romance sets the scene for happier times. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER This is a jewel of a month for determined Virgos. Your mind is sharp and better able to grasp abstract ideas. Being a perfectionist, you’re now in your element when put in charge or facing demanding deadlines. Would you have it any other way? Maybe. A little extra romance would ease the pressure. Look to sexy Venus, who provides recreation in the bedroom. Discretion is needed if you choose an illicit path. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Librans are back in “can-do” mode. Just as well, as there’s an increasing number of projects to deal with. New ventures started late in the month show amazing potential. And should the cosmos offer a financial pick-me-up, accept graciously. Think of it as a reward for good deeds done. And when feeling this flush, it’s easy to spoil yourself. Go ahead. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.
SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER You may feel lost for logic right now, but you’re not alone. Thanks to a feisty Mars, considerable changes stir up the domestic front - in particular, relationships. This cosmic influence often coincides with break-ups. The good news? Secure partnerships will survive. Even in the best relationships, though, a slight change can be a good thing. Singles fare better this month. Love becomes wild and impulsive. CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY As anyone who’s been forced onto a stage will tell you, it can be overwhelming. This month you might find yourself in the spotlight but doing fine. Surges of brilliance could even earn you an encore or two. Finances, though, become a source of concern. Those “must-have” urges may tempt even the strongest of wills. Sentimental romantic ties could also lead to a revisit of old grounds. If already coupled, take care. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Change is coming, so gather your strength and prepare. This month the cosmos ensures a busy schedule, along with a strong possibility of travel. In matters of the heart, singles can expect to turn a few heads - while couples strengthen rapport. Professionally, you may have to abandon age-worn practices. A tough ask, but soon you’ll emerge equipped to deal with cutting-edge challenges. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH Sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated. Even so, it doesn’t hurt to acknowledge your talents - especially in moments of doubt. You know your true potential, and now’s not the time to downplay it. There’s a financial flavour to the month, with enough interested forces ready to boost your cash flow. It wouldn’t hurt to spruce up your image - others will be drawn to your new look and magnetic charms.
TANYA OBREZA was born
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Having survived so much recently, most Geminis are ready to slow down. Unfortunately, the planets deny you this luxury, so stay focused. Thankfully, you can bring the more mercurial elements of your character into play. And like it or not, for now, you’re cast in the role of cosmic custodian. But it’s not all hard work. By late month, your libido is allowed more latitude for play. Licentiously so. 22
SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER It’s not selfish to do what makes you happy, Scorpio. You must be satisfied with your own lot before you can bring joy to others. But expect an air of envy around you this month. Mars is financially generous towards you right now, which may put some noses out of joint. Shrug off any provocation. You’re superintelligent and well-loved, so most friends and family will be thrilled to applaud you.

Newcastle Writers Festival
HELEN GARNER
Discover the stories behind the stories when the Newcastle Writers Festival returns from 1-3 April, with a program of 70 free and ticketed events featuring over 110 writers. After two years of 'pivoting and postponing', the 2022 festival will shine the spotlight on local and national literary talent sharing stories from the Hunter and beyond. Newcastle Writers Festival was one of the first Australian literary festivals to cancel in March 2020, as Covid-19 arrived and then quickly transitioned to a condensed online program, arguably the first literary festival to utilise Zoom just as the pandemic took hold. After moving its traditional April dates to September in 2021, the NSW lockdown forced the organisation to postpone until April 2022. "We've done everything we can to remain viable, and we've become very good at dealing with whatever Covid has thrown at us," said director Rosemarie Milsom.
Some of Australia's most respected and loved writers will visit Newcastle in April, including Julia Baird, Emily Bitto, Trent Dalton, Nardi Simpson and Tom Keneally. There is also a strong contingent of Hunter writers in the program, including Lee Christine, Keri Glastonbury and Wendy James. While there isn’t an overarching theme, Milsom said the opening and closing night events reflect the program's tone. "Our opening night gala centres on love in all its forms, and six writers, including Trent Dalton, Hannah Kent, and Thomas Mayor, will speak about its impact," said Rosemarie. "On the final evening, Sarah Wilson will discuss her most recent book, This One Wild and Precious Life: A hopeful path forward in a fractured world. I realise there is a lot of despair given the ongoing impact of the pandemic, record-breaking floods, and the war in Ukraine. I don't want to sugar-coat the hardship or avoid tough conversations, but I also want to celebrate the comfort provided by books and powerful writing." Run over three days, the festival is bursting with panel discussions, readings, interviews, and book launches. Fresh Food...
FROM OUR LOCAL FARMERS TO YOUR PLATE
With consumers worldwide becoming increasingly concerned about climate change and its threats to their environment, there's an increased push to consider not just what we eat but also where it comes from. And buying locally grown and sourced food (even if it's just a portion of your weekly grocery shop) holds many benefits for both the environment and your health. Locally grown food creates critical economic opportunities for our local community, provides health benefits and helps to reduce environmental impact. It also helps bring the community together and gives people the chance to make a difference. In Newcastle (and Lake Macquarie), we're fortunate to have two local food suppliers that enable us to buy great food – and make a difference!
Newcastle Farmers Market (held every Sunday at Broadmeadow) and Lake Macquarie Farmers Market (at Speers Point Park on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month) enable you to buy groceries directly from the farmer – from the person who grew, nurtured and made the product. At the farmers market, you not only get to meet the producer, but you can also ask about how and where it's grown or made and how best to store or use it. It's an experience that cannot be replicated, with farmers tending to their crops and timing their harvests to ensure your produce is as fresh as can be on the day you purchase it. A regular at 'The Farmers' is our local Commercial Fisherman's Cooperative, who you'll also find at Wickham and Swansea. Here you'll find sustainably caught, fresh local seafood. The "Co-Op" was formed over 75 years
ago to service the needs of local commercial fishers by providing fuel, ice, gas, cold storage, mooring facilities, transport and the marketing of the daily catch of seafood either locally or in Sydney. There are currently 130 shareholder members who work independently in their fishing businesses, either in the estuaries or on their fish/prawn trawlers, depending on their individual endorsements. They're all providing the freshest of freshest local seafood to the CoOp 365 days a year! Why not cook up a tasty treat for your family this weekend utilising local produce from both the markets and the Co-op. For upcoming Farmers Market dates, visit www.newcastlecityfarmersmarket.com.au or www.lakemacquariecityfarmersmarket.com. au, and for opening hours at the Fisherman's Co-Op, visit www.fishcoop.com.au

DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental
If you're not getting any more teeth, it makes perfect sense to be extremely conservative with what you've got. Conserving tooth structure ensures that the tooth (or remaining tooth structure) is the strongest it can be to support whatever restoration is to be placed. The more tooth structure you cut away, the more you weaken the foundation for whatever restoration is placed on or in the tooth.
Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
If you've read any of my previous articles, you'll immediately understand that I'm really committed to conserving teeth. As many real estate agents will tell you about land: "God's not making any more". For each person, this is true of teeth.
This gets tricky when teeth are missing. Every time you lose a tooth, your remaining teeth bear an increased load – just like the brick piers under a house – each time one of the brick piers crumbles (and is not replaced) – the remaining piers bear an increased load. Take out too many piers, and suddenly, the roof starts to leak, doors in the house won't open and close properly, and the floor becomes crooked. Frequently, I see people who have already lost many teeth but still want a restorative solution. Unfortunately, they exhibit all the dental hallmarks of the house with a leaky roof and crooked floors. Yes, implants are a possible solution. But very expensive. In these instances, I endeavour to salvage what teeth are left – as well as replacing some missing teeth – by using an age-old remedy: Splinting. By splinting two, four, five, or even six teeth together, we increase the strength of the system by virtue of support. Just like a line of people – it's easy to walk past and push one of the people out of line. But if the line of people lock arms – it's a different story. If you've got loose teeth or teeth that you think would benefit from support – maybe splinting the tooth to a buddy is the kind of support your toothy-peg needs.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
2
Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)
3
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

On Tour With the Kid CHLOE O'SULLIVAN
LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING My grandmother is 85, and when there is a funeral for people in her generation, there is sadness, of course, but there are also phrases like, "He's had a good run" or "he has lived a full life". However, now in my 40s, I have found myself at more and more farewells where that just isn't the case. A life that feels like it's been cut short is a terrible thing. It's the finality of it all. The regret and the missed opportunity. People talk about their bucket list, but we always seem to wait until we hear bad news or there is some kind of timeline. Often that is too late. By the time you get that kind of news, there are often physical or financial implications that stop you from doing what you hoped to do. After going to five funerals in under a year that left me with those feelings and having two friends get life-limiting news, I felt this overwhelming urge to do something. So, I
started a little project, the name of which I can't write in print. So, we'll refer to it here as the 'Stuff It List'. I asked a group of friends what the one thing on their List was, and we are going to spend this year trying to make them all happen. Reading the comments, I was shocked how many things on my friends' Stuff It List items were things I had already been lucky enough to do. I owe so much of the credit for that to my mother. She has always lived her life that way. She was only 27 when her father died at 54. When she was 39, her partner Robert was killed in a car accident. Both were life-changing events in our family. Even though the sorrow was palpable, she found a way through and was so determined that this would be the reason for her and her child to live life to the fullest. After the death of her partner, she taught herself how to sail a yacht single-handedly, and then travelled all over the world. She travelled to Tanzania and spent some time working with St Judes - a school started by an Australian woman to help local girls get an education. It is an opportunity for these girls that would otherwise be missed for many cultural and financial reasons. For 20 years mum sponsored a girl to receive room, board, and school fees.
Have you suffered injury as a result of medical negligence?
Now she is an incredibly bright woman and has used that quality to move forward. Every girl deserves that opportunity. One of my friends who has sadly had some bad news recently had an encounter with the meerkats on his Stuff It List. COVID sadly prevented him from being somewhere that we could make that happen. So when the opportunity presented itself at Hunter Valley Wildlife Park, we decided to grab it with both hands. I thought about all the times I have seen signs for those encounters and thought, I'll do it next time. Unfortunately, there won't be a next time for so many people. We were doing it now. The Keeper who took us in was amazing and very informative and didn't blink an eye when I teared up and had a little moment. For some reason, having those beautiful little creatures crawling all over us and feeding out of our hands just made me feel safe and warm. COVID was at its height, and we were all scared. But inside those gates and at that moment, I felt like we were doing something important. Nature will always make you grounded. There are many encounters available all year round at Hunter Valley Wildlife Park. Check out what is available by heading to www.huntervalleyzoo.com.au or maybe add it to your Stuff It List!

Meet sweet little Betsy, who has come so far in such a short amount of time. This tiny tigress was found hiding with her brother and sister, abandoned in a backyard. Having never met humans before, Betsy was understandably very scared. But thanks to the love and patience of her foster parents (and lots of treats, of course!) Betsy is getting more and more confident every day.
Bigoo is a handsome Kelpie mix who loves chasing balls, swimming in the lake, getting belly rubs and protecting the yard from birds who come to visit. Poor Bigoo used to get nervous meeting new people; however, his foster dad has made Bigoo feel safe, and now he’s quick to warm to strangers. Isn’t it incredible what the dedication of a foster carer can do!

Sponsorship Agreements intouch contributor
TEGAN EASTLEY
Senior Lawyer | Jenkins Legal
By sponsoring a community event, business lunch or sporting team, you can engage with the community in a way that allows you to get your brand or business presence out there and “give back.” But, regardless of whether you are the sponsor or the recipient of sponsorship, you need to be aware of your legal obligations. You should formalise any verbal negotiations you and the other party agree to with a written sponsorship agreement. When you are negotiating a sponsorship agreement, you will need to consider the following:
• Commencement Date - When will the agreement commence? • Term - How long do you intend the duration of the sponsorship agreement to be? • Option to Extend - Can this term be extended if the sponsorship works out? • Benefits - What benefits will you or the other party receive in exchange for sponsorship? (i.e. the right to speak at an event or agreed promotional activities, for example, 10% signage for an event). • Payment - What is the agreed amount to be paid or received in exchange for sponsorship? • Key Dates – What dates are agreed for proposed events, advertisements etc.? • Exclusivity Clause – Is the agreement

exclusive between you and the other party? If so, you may need to consider a list of competitors you do not wish to have involved in the sponsor. Events - What kind of events are agreed upon (i.e. online or face-to-face, or a combination)? Flexibility - Will the agreement include a clause allowing face-to-face events to become online in certain circumstances? This is a particularly important consideration in the wake of COVID-19, as border closures and illness can prevent face-to-face obligations. Confidential Information – Do you require your information to be treated with confidence and privacy? Intellectual Property – how would you like your logos and documents protected from use without your knowledge? Monitoring and Review – will you require the other party to communicate about events regularly? Termination – What repayment obligations are you willing to agree to if either you or the other party terminate the agreement?
Please get in touch with our office if we can assist you with your negotiations or if you require your sponsorship agreement formalised.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY? BRIAN SUTERS HONOURED FOR ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY An architectural legacy that spans more than half a century has earned Brian Suters the City's highest honour. The award-winning architect has been named a Freeman of the City in recognition of his significant contribution to Newcastle's built form and enduring commitment to mentoring the next generation. Fittingly, the honour was conferred within the walls of the updated Civic Playhouse, which Brian designed for City of Newcastle in 2004. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Brian's work had helped shape the way we see Newcastle today and would continue to be appreciated for generations to come. "His legacy is evident throughout the city, from our striking Brutalist former City Administration Centre, which has recently been reborn as Newcastle's first five-star hotel, to the modern surrounds of the Civic Playhouse and the remarkable Bauhaus-influence design of his own former family home on Wolfe Street, which won the prestigious Blacket Award for Architecture in 1980," Cr Nelmes said Brian acknowledged the role City of Newcastle played in his career and said he was thrilled to be honoured as a Freeman of the City more than half a century later. "Newcastle has been the mainspring of my success as an architect and the basis of my community participation," Brian said. Brian joins an esteemed list of 14 other

SWIMMING POOLS SET TO EXPAND AS DEMAND SOARS Swim centres could be expanded and improved across Lake Mac to help cater for the City's growing population over the next 20 years. Lake Macquarie Council Section Manager Community Assets Brendan Callander said community input was now open on the Aquatic Facilities Strategy, which will guide the future of the City's six swim centres. "This is all about catering to our rapidly increasing population because we know that in 20 years, our city will be home to 30,000 more people," Mr Callander said. Speers Point Swim Centre, built more than 60 years ago, could potentially be expanded to boast a heated indoor pool, new amenities and an 'adventure zone' with slides and a water

zipline course. Or Swansea and West Wallsend swim centres could host heated indoor pools which would run learn to swim and warm water therapy sessions year-round. "We're asking everyone in the community to tell us what they like about our swim centres, what they dislike and how they might use the pools in years to come," Mr Callander said. Feedback will be coupled with best-practice research to develop a draft Aquatic Facilities Strategy. Residents can have their say through an online survey until Monday, 11 April. MAITLAND FAREWELLS ITS NAVAL NAMESAKE Around 25 officers and sailors from HMAS Maitland will parade through the streets of Central Maitland from 10am on Saturday 2 April, during the vessel's final Freedom of Entry march before being decommissioned at the end of April. The ceremonial march will celebrate the vessel's long association with the City of Maitland, which stretches back to when it was first commissioned and the inaugural Freedom of Entry to Maitland in September 2006. Members of the HMAS Maitland will form up in The Levee's Shared Zone at 10am and will march along The Levee/High Street until they are challenged by the local commanding officer of NSW Police at the junction of High, Hunter and Victoria streets. The march will then resume, under police escort, towards Maitland Town Hall, concluding at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. A full closure will be in place in The Levee, corner of High and Bulwer Street, High Street to Dransfield Lane, corner of High Street and Bourke Street, Preschool Lane and Drill Hall Lane between 8am, and 11am.
$200,000 IN EVENT FUNDING UP FOR GRABS Lake Macquarie City Council will make available more than $200,000 to support and build local, community and major events to grow the City's culture and identity. Round One of Council's 2022/2023 events funding is open until 29 April, with grants available across three categories. Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said individual grants of up to $2000 were available for local events and celebrations, up to $10,000 for community events and up to $20,000 for sponsored events and festivals. "This program aims to fund meaningful, creative, high-quality events for our community
and visitors to Lake Macquarie. We will prioritise engaging, surprising and entertaining events that are attractive to visitors and have the potential to inject money into the local economy," Ms Hemsley said. Council offers funding biannually, in March and November each year for events six months to 12 months in the future. To assist applicants, a grant application information session will be held online and face-to-face Wednesday 6 April, 5.30-6.30pm. Bookings will be available when applicants start their applications.
