EDITORS... “Resilience” {the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness} Our final issue of 2019 was titled – Looking Forward to 2020. If only! By about March we were all wishing our way back to 2019 with gusto. But if we’ve learned one thing, it's that we are Very Much Looking Forward to 2021! It is with this in mind that we are pleased to be presenting you with the final issue of intouch for 2020. And also the first issue for 2021. This year has enabled us to see our region at its best. We’ve pulled together to support one another, innovated new ways of doing business, home-schooled, become Zoom-savvy, made masks a fashion statement, prioritised mental health, registered QR codes (over and over), bought local, recognised what we should have long ago seen in our frontline workers and overall just become more… resilient. And maybe that’s a silver lining that we can all be proud of. This month we look at all the fabulous things we can do both at home and up to four hours from home. Not only can you build an itinerary that’s jam-packed with activities that you may never have experienced (or at least not for some time), you’ll also be supporting local tourism operators in the process. Why not get energetic and do one a day? That’s 40 days of Summer fun – although you may need another holiday to recover! You’ll also find plenty of family-friendly school holiday activities in our School Holiday Guide (page 53), and if you really can’t find enough to keep you occupied, then lift out our Hunter Homes Special Feature and embark on a building or renovating project (or two!) Despite the challenges this year, the team at intouch has still enjoyed getting to know some of our favourite people, places and local businesses. As the only locally owned and produced magazine in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, it's our pleasure to share all the great things about living in the Hunter with our community. From our families to yours, we wish you a restful Christmas and a fabulous 2021. Enjoy!

The Team What is your favourite Christmas movie? "Not a big fan of Christmas themed films but if I had to choose it would probably be The Holiday – the romantic comedy starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black and Elli Wallach." – QUENTIN VON ESSEN, MANAGING DIRECTOR (LOCAL SINCE 2006)

"Polar Express. Yes – I know it’s a kids movie - but it’s become an (enforced) tradition in our family on Christmas Eve." – DI VON ESSEN, PUBLISHER/MANAGING EDITOR (LOCAL SINCE 2006)

"One of my favourites is Four Christmases – it shows the chaos of Christmas Day and how to deal with all those fabulous relatives…" – OLIVIA RODGERS, ADVERTISING & ONLINE COORDINATOR (NEWC. BORN & BRED)

"Pretty much all of the new Christmas movies that are released on Netflix – yes they are cheesy but I love it this time of year!" – JESS CODRINGTON, SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER (HUNTER LOCAL)

"A controversial addition to the Christmas list but Die Hard is a must. The thought that someone else is having a rough day is comforting. Last Christmas which came out last year is a new favourite." – MEL MURRAY, CONTENT WRITER (LOCAL SINCE 1998)

"Love Actually. Great cast, anything Alan Rickman does is gold and I love the imagine of Hugh Grant dancing through 10 Downing Street!" – MICHELLE MEEHAN, FEATURES WRITER (HUNTER LOCAL SINCE 1984)

"Love Actually – it's such a bitter sweet movie I can't resist. I usually end up watching it on my own because everyone's seen it too much already. I don't mind though – I like to laugh through my tears." – LIANE MORRIS, FEATURES WRITER (PERMANENT LOCAL SINCE 2013)

WORDS CITY OF NEWCASTLE

This Summer, City of Newcastle has created a range of fun, easy and safe ways for our community to come together at the end of a year where often we have felt far apart. Join us, as we say goodbye to a year most will be glad to see behind us – and, most importantly, celebrate our hope for the future ahead. We’ve supported each other through the tough times, showing the resilience and compassion that lies in the heart of who we are. Now, it’s time to RESET. The RESET 2021 program has been developed to encompass and unite all ages and areas across the Newcastle region (list of events on page 9). From letting your hair down at pool parties and picnics, escaping in the magic of cinema, or even the magic of music to looking through the lens of the some of the country’s best rock photographers – there’s something for everyone. Even better, most of it is free!

"It never fully feels like Christmas time until one of these two things happen: 1. The Christmas tree goes up; 2. We watch Home Alone. There is nothing quite like the many weeks afterwards repeating the line, "keep the change, ya filthy animal". Second to this, you can't look past iconic movie, The Grinch. One of Jim Carrey's best films, I am sure we have all been known to feel a bit Grinchy." – MIA KYRIKOS, CONTENT WRITER (LOCAL 2006–2016)

FEEL LIKE A BBQ? Grab your City of Newcastle App to explore a new park, and find out what facilities are available to make sure you’ll have access to a BBQ, running water, picnic tables and toilets.

"There are couple of oldies I used to watch with my parents and grandparents, so for the nostalgia vote – White Christmas with Bing Crosby and It’s A Wonderful Life with James Stewart. This could be the year to revisit them." – KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON, CONTENT WRITER (LAKE MAC BORN & BRED)

NEED TO ESCAPE THE HEAT? Grab some popcorn and escape the heat at the Civic Theatre Cinema program. Experience life as a rock star at Newcastle Art Gallery’s WE COULD BE HEROES: A Backstage Pass exhibition.

Curate your own journey through the 1x4 exhibition at the Newcastle Museum, or discover the world of 'Colour' in a special exhibition direct from Questacon. EVER SEEN A ROBOT DANCE? Visit our new digital library at 12 Stewart Ave where you can meet Pepper the Robot, explore space on our interactive screen, or pick up the latest new release books. WANT TO MAKE GETTING AROUND EASIER? Download the EasyPark app to start, stop and extend your parking in the city from the touch of a button on your phone. Or better yet, grab a Bykko e-bike and cruise past the cars stuck in traffic, and feel the breeze on your skin as your explore the freedom of stopping each time you want to take a selfie. LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION? Visit our What’s On website for a vast array of events to help keep your days full of activity. You can also view the What’s On website on our City of Newcastle App so that you can plan your next activity on the go. So, grab your family and friends and make your itinerary. Let’s RESET!

ENJOY A SENSATIONAL FESTIVE-SEASON

Seafood Feast

While celebrations on the other side of the world include slaving over a hot stove on Christmas day, Australians have adopted a more summer-appropriate tradition of indulging in a delicious seafood feast. Due to this tradition, the holiday season has become the busiest time for those working in the seafood industry, so we thought we’d catch up with Robert Gauta of Newcastle and Swansea’s Commercial Fishermans Cooperative now, while we still can!

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without seafood – why do you think Australia has adopted seafood as an Aussie Christmas staple? Seafood in Australia is of the highest quality and best when compared to anywhere in the world. It has been a staple for some time due to our love of the Ocean, the beach and everything coastal. But I also think it’s because no one feels like cooking too much on a hot day and our Christmas Days are often record-breakers. Would it be fair to say that Christmas is the busiest period at the co-operative? Christmas has traditionally been the busiest time of the year. It’s a celebration for a lot of families and can be the only time they have seafood on their tables for a very special occasion. What product is the most popular at Christmas? How much gets sold throughout Christmas? How do we get our hands on it before the big day? The most popular product at Christmas is prawns. We will go through around 7 to 8 tonnes of prawns during Christmas week, with deliveries coming in daily. Oysters are also very popular with approximately 4,500 to 5,500 dozen sold for the week. Christmas orders can be placed up until 21 December, by phoning 4965 4221. There is a minimum order of $200, and a $100 deposit will be required to confirm your order (all stock subject to availability). Make sure you visit our Facebook page for all our Christmas/New Year opening hours. While prawns have proven themselves a clear favourite, Christmas in Australia also includes various other seafood products. In recent years, the demand for various products has skyrocketed. What are the top 5 best-sellers? Prawns are the favourite, with a variety to be available. We will have farmed Tiger Prawns, Queensland King Prawns, and depending on mother nature, there may be some local

School Prawns and Local King Prawns, with some luck. Other favourites are Lobsters, the ever-popular Tasmanian Salmon, Snapper, Blue Swimmer Crabs, Balmain Bugs and many species of fillets. What other foods do you think pair best with our seafood feast? Fresh is best, and fresh Seafood is complemented by the wide variety of fresh Australian produce. Prawns team beautifully with fresh mango. Fresh baked bread and summer salads are also a must. Why not top it off with some superb Hunter Valley Wines? Do you have any other advice for us to ensure our Christmas Seafood Feats is a hit? Don’t forget, everything that will be available hasn’t been harvested yet. We will be working through the night all through Christmas week to get the freshest produce available to our customers for their Christmas lunches and dinners. Demand has increased during COVID, and we have ordered to the best of our forecasting ability. To avoid disappointment, don’t leave it too late.

Your Summer Seafood is sorted! For all your Australian, sustainably caught, fresh local seafood needs, you wouldn't go anywhere else, other than the Fishermen’s Co-Op!

CHRISTMAS ORDERS – selected fresh and frozen products will be available to order from our Wickham store ONLY. Orders can be placed up until Dec 21. (min order $200, $100 deposit required)

FEEL INSPIRED TO LOOK BEYOND LOCAL LIMITS FOR YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY? IF YOU’VE ALREADY TICKED THE TOP 10 ACTIVITIES IN YOUR LOCAL AREA OFF AND YOU STILL HAVE SOME TIME TO SPARE, WHY NOT LOOK A LITTLE FURTHER AFIELD AND TAKE A SHORT BREAK TO A DESTINATION THAT’S ONLY FOUR HOURS DRIVE AWAY? LIANE MORRIS HAS UNCOVERED SOME FABULOUS SPOTS THAT ARE WELL WORTH A WEEK OR A WEEKEND THIS SUMMER...

PORT MACQUARIE (2 hours, 42 mins NORTH)

Port Macquarie is located on the mid-north coast of NSW and is most famous for its all-year-round stunning sub-tropical weather, widely hailed as the best in Australia, 17 gorgeous beaches and a magnificent river system. If sunning, surfing, fishing, boating and strolling along the white stretches of sandy heaven are not enough for you though, Port Macquarie has loads more to offer the discerning visitor and family groups alike. Discovered by John Oxley the Surveyor General in 1818 and named after Governor Macquarie, the region has been home to the indigenous Birpai people for more than 40,000 years. The Birpai followed the area’s lush seasonal food trail, living in harmony and plenty until the penal settlement was founded in 1821 for secondary offence convicts. The historical evidence of both the indigenous culture and the convict heritage can still be found today in Port Macquarie and are worth exploring.

12 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Port Macquarie Hastings Heritage offers award-winning walking tours – 'Uncovering Our Past' and 'Grave Tales' – a great way to teach the older kids all about Australian history and the history of the region. The lush seasonal food trail that was enjoyed by the Birpai people for thousands of years can still be enjoyed today. Port Macquarie and the hinterland is a foodie haven with opportunities to pick your own strawberries, visit an oyster farm, enjoy a tipple at a winery, meet the local producers at the farmer's markets or try a local craft beer. There are several wineries including Cassegrain, Bago Vineyards (which includes a fabulous maze for the kids), Longpoint Vineyard (amazing outdoor sculptures) and Little Fish Restaurant and Vineyard. If beer is more your taste, then don’t miss The Little Brewing Company whose Wicked Elf beer is quite famous or The Black Duck Brewery where you can enjoy a tasting paddle of 8 beers and a ploughman’s lunch. Popular attractions are diverse and many including but not limited to, the Koala Hospital, Billabong Zoo, river cruises, whale watching, camel riding and the Timbertown Heritage Theme Park. With a vibrant art scene, there’s always a gallery and exhibitions to visit and a multitude of events year-round. On the fourth Sunday of each month, local artisans sell their wares in the Artist Market located in the grounds of The Maritime Museum. Visitors are well catered for with a wide choice of accommodation – everything from 4.5-star luxury hotels to camping by the beach, nature domes, retreats, farm stays or holiday homes. When it comes to restaurants and cafes, Port Macquarie and the surrounding villages don’t disappoint. If fine dining is your thing, try The Stunned Mullet, the Port’s only one hatted restaurant or if you’re after something that’s sea to plate, try the buzzing vibe of Bill’s Fishhouse & Bar. The café scene is alive and well with places like LV’s on

Clarence focusing on homemade and locally sourced produce and fare – they even have their own farm. With a rich history, a vibrant arts and culture scene, lots to see and do, gorgeous food and wine and plenty of places to stay, Port Macquarie is an easy getaway for Novocastrians. And at only 2 hours and 45 minutes’ drive, the kids won’t complain too much! How to Get There: Via Pacific Highway A1 past Forster and Taree. Cost: Approximately $29 to $49 fuel cost. Travel Time: 2 hours, 42 mins.

MUDGEE (3 hours, 35 mins NORTH-WEST)

In the Central West of New South Wales, Mudgee is located on a broad fertile valley on the Cudgegong River about 261 km north-west of Sydney. Most famous for its incredible food offerings and its more than 40 family-owned wineries, Mudgee is a favourite getaway spot for busy urbanites wanting a taste of the country. Prior to the crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813, the Wiradjuri people called Mudgee “Moothi” – meaning “nest in the hills”. In 1821 James Blackman was the first European to settle in the area. As others followed him, the settlers killed many of the food sources that the Wiradjuri people depended on and unrest followed. Gold was discovered in the area in 1851 and vineyards were founded from 1858 by German immigrants. Possibly the area’s most famous son was Henry Lawson who had strong ties to the area. If you can drag yourself away from the more than 30 cellar doors, Mudgee and surrounding towns have an incredible array of things to do and explore. No visit to Mudgee is complete without a visit to the historic town of Gulgong where there are three museums dedicated to the F

tents, teepees, farm stays, rustic cottages, luxury resorts, hotels, B&Bs – if you can dream it, Mudgee’s got it. How to Get There – Hunter Expressway to the Golden Highway, then Bylong Valley Way and Wollar Road to Mudgee. Cost: Approximately $35 to $55 fuel cost. Travel Time: 3 hours, 35 mins.

JENOLAN CAVES (4 hours, 2 mins SOUTH-WEST) One of the most impressive cave sites in all the world, Jenolan Caves can be found in the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve in the middle of the Central Tablelands region, west of the Blue Mountains. history of the area, its status as a gold mining town and Henry Lawson. The town buildings are heritage listed, and fascinating facts are easy to discover, such as the fact that Dame Nellie Melba performed in the Prince of Wales Opera House and it is the oldest performing arts venue still being used for its intended purpose. Have a poke around the antique stores or join in the Gold Mining Experience and try your hand at panning for gold. Time your visit to Mudgee to coincide with one of the many events that are held throughout the year including the NRL Charity Shield in February 2021, Fermenta in March celebrating all things fermented, the Mudgee Classic a cycling event in May, Mudgeeque a BBQ, wine food and music Winter festival in June, the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days in July or the Flavours of Mudgee – a community street festival in September. Perhaps you’d like to learn a new skill? In Mudgee, The Little Cooking School hold various classes throughout the year including Summer Pasta Sunday where you learn how to make fresh pasta then get to enjoy it with local white wines on Valentine’s Day, or cook up a Greek feast or learn about Ottolenghi. There are sourdough classes, brewing courses and wine schools, to name a few. The restaurants are too many and too outstanding even to begin to make a list. Visitors are spoilt for choice, and there truly is something for everyone and every taste. Perhaps the Pipeclay Pumphouse at the Robert Stein Vineyard & Winery and the Zin House at Lowe Family Wine Co are worth special mention if you’re after a fine dining experience. Similarly, the accommodation options are too numerous and too gorgeous to go through them all. There are bubble

excursions, it’s worth taking the family for a more in-depth exploration. Around 340 million years old, Jenolan Caves is the oldest known open cave system in the world. Formed over millions of years due to erosion and the natural weathering from the Jenolan River. The local indigenous people - Gundungurra and Wiradjury, originally called it "Genowlan" which meant "high place shaped like a foot". It was a sacred place of healing waters where they would take their sick to bathe in the underground rivers and pools. It wasn’t until 1838 that the first recorded cave discovery was made by James Whalen. By the 1880s Jenolan Caves had become a genuine tourist destination, and the current

Caves House was built in 1898 after a fire destroyed the original buildings. Cave discoveries continue to be possible with more than 300 already discovered although only 9–11 are open as show caves. The number one thing to do at Jenolan Caves is to explore the caves* with plenty of options according to fitness and bravery levels. With prior notice, there is even limited wheelchair access. There are many guided and self-guided tours to choose from; there’s even an app. There are tours designed especially for children, Legends, Mysteries and Ghosts is an extremely popular after-dark tour, or there are multi-lingual tours. To challenge yourself consider an adventure caving experience where two qualified guides will take you into the heart of the mountain where you will crawl, squeeze and climb in undeveloped caves, with only a headlamp to light the way. Cave tours are not all you can do at Jenolan Caves. The Jenolan River Walking Track, beginning from the Grand Arch is suitable for almost everyone and rewards with spectacular views of the river, the Blue Lake**, waterfalls and suspension bridge. Don’t forget your togs to take advantage of the swimming holes. When it comes to accommodation, the heritage-listed Caves House is a step back in time. There’s also a motelstyle Mountain Lodge and a budget backpacker Gate House option. For more accommodation choices you can stay at the nearby town of Oberon where you will find a caravan park, cabins, cottages, retreats, motels, B&B’s and even a trout fishing farm stay. Food becomes an experience in Chisolm’s Restaurant at Caves House, one of only two remaining Grand Dining Rooms in Australia or enjoy a drink at Jeremiah’s Bar & Lounge. Light

food options are catered for at the recently renovated Caves Café. Visit Jenolan Caves now for a more intimate experience or wait till the renovations are complete later in 2021. Either way, you won’t be disappointed. *Note – due to covid, cave tours are limited and have become exclusive experiences that on weekends include various dining or accommodation options. On weekdays it is still possible to choose a cave only experience, but they are limited in number. With fewer people allowed on the tours, the experience becomes even more special and memorable. **Note – work is currently being undertaken to dredge the lake and upgrade the facilities. Once complete the $20m upgrade will provide boardwalks, viewing platforms and an education centre—completion due mid-2021. How to Get There: Pacific Motorway M1 toward Sydney, M2, M7, M4 towards Katoomba. Pass Katoomba, then at Hartley Historic Village, turn left at the Jenolan Caves turnoff. Check for road closures on Jenolan Caves Road. Cost: Approximately $29 to $43 fuel cost + tolls. Travel Time: 4 hours, 2 mins.

and the natural wonders of the Minnamurra Rainforest and Saddleback Mountain are not far away and totally worth exploring. Named after the indigenous Wodi Wodi name Kiaram-a which means “where the sea makes a noise”, a reference to the blowhole, Kiama was a heavily bush-clad region through which the nomadic Dharawal people regularly travelled before white settlement. In 1797 George Bass sailed alongside the blowhole and became the first European to witness this spectacular sight. He also noticed the red cedar rainforests, and by 1812 the white settlers had begun clearing the land. Basalt also attracted settlers, and by 1832 the first permanent residence was established. To immerse yourself in the history of the area pick up a heritage walks brochure from the visitor information centre. Explore Pilot’s Cottage Museum, a maritime and regional museum that was built in 1881, that provides information on history relating to shipping, the cedar industry and basalt quarries or walk to the historic Terrace Houses, originally built for the local quarry workers in 1886 and now house a unique selection of eateries, crafts, collectables and clothing stores. Kiama has been one of Sydney’s favourite holiday spots since the train line was opened in 1893 and also boasts one of Australia’s most scenic coastal walks that stretches 20km from the mouth of the Minnamurra River south through Kiama to Gerringong’s Werri Beach. With easy access points and suitable for most fitness levels, there’s no better way to take in the natural beauty of the area. Don’t forget your swimmers so you can take a dip, your binoculars to whale watch and your camera/phone for those insta-worthy snaps. If arts and craft are more your thing, then time your visit for the third Sunday of the month so you can enjoy the Kiama Seaside Markets where over 100 stalls offer everything from handcrafted gifts, locally designed clothing, jewellery, art, vintage and upcycled products. Kiama is a true foodie haven with more than 50 cafés and restaurants to choose from, wineries and microbreweries just down the road in Gerringong and even handson farmhouse workshops where you can learn cheesemaking, breadmaking, baking, jams and preserves, kombucha and even coffee bean harvesting. Surf beaches, water sports, beach life – it’s all there just a stroll away from one of the many accommodation options

available. And there’s a lot of accommodation to choose from, with everything from glamping, resorts, b&bs, self-contained cottages or units, pubs and a large number of caravan parks. Kiama has been showing holidaymakers a good time for almost 130 years, so it really knows what it’s doing! 'CELEST'

'PORTALS OF ILLUSION'

There’s so Much More to Discover

at Winmark Wines

Since taking the reins of the former Pooles Rock estate, owner Karin Adcock has seen Winmark Wines gain a lofty reputation as not just a producer of premium Chardonnays, but a destination in its own right. With the new Cellar Door recently launched, guests to the property are enthusiastically enjoying the Chardonnays produced by this remarkable vineyard. Karin says they have found the overwhelmingly positive response to be quite humbling.

“It’s the team of incredibly talented experts that bring our vineyard to deliver these beautiful Chardonnays that deserve the credit,” said Karin. But it is evident this is a team led by a woman with passion, and an amazing eye for the best utilisation of the property. Not only can visitors taste wines at the Cellar Door that pay homage to the properties unique history, but guests can now also be mesmerised by a new collection of art and sculptures located throughout the property. Sculptor David Ball’s monumental Biosis was the first of many sculptures to find their home at Winmark, and with David’s view that ‘Wine and Sculpture both age well,’ it was not long before a second sculpture from his series ‘Celest’ was installed. It will keep good company with the Wollombi Sculpture Festival People’s Choice sculpture ‘Fight or Flight’, and the newly installed ‘Ceramic Lollipops’ and ‘Portals of Illusion’. “I am truly at my happiest when I see our amazing sculptures arriving at Winmark, and I think of how much joy it will bring our guests and visitors,” said Karin. “I love the idea of people being able to enjoy a wine tasting in our new Cellar Door, exploring our beautiful property and discovering all these sculptures – some are huge and difficult to miss, and others you have to look to find hiding amongst the natural features of the property.”

You will find Winmark Wines at 229 Wollombi Road in beautiful Broke. The Cellar Door is open seven days, or visit www.winmarkwines.com.au for more information.

A PL ACE TO CONNECT Spanning 130 breathtaking acres, Winmark is not just a premium Chardonnay producer but a destination in Broke, Hunter Valley. In 2016 new owner Karin Adcock began re-establishing the former award-winning Pooles Rock vineyard and Winmark continues its remarkable revival with the launch of the Cellar Door for

their Chardonnay tastings. The grounds are a wonderland of their own, and curated sculptures as well as natural landmarks can be found across the estate. With a vineyard that holds a long tradition of producing beautiful wines, Winmark is a place of remarkable beauty and unexpected discovery.

A Fresh Start

WHAT’S ON

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU’RE A FESTIVAL VENUE IN A PANDEMIC? YOU KEEP YOUR CHIN UP AND LOOK FOR A WAY THROUGH! 2020 was destined to be the 16th year of Dashville’s biggest calendar event, The Gum Ball Music and Arts Festival. With three days of music and over 30 artists from around Australia and overseas, it was all ready to roll when it came to a sudden grinding halt due to the pandemic. Like many businesses dealing with forced closure, it was no doubt a challenging time for the regional events business. Fortunately, the team at Dashville are no slouches and have worked hard to survive. Postponing Gum Ball and Thrashville to 2021, cancelling Dashville Skyline in 2020, adapting and creating new viable ways of operating, including the creation of an exciting Dashville Weddings and Elopements service were all part of 2020 for the team. Ambitiously Dashville pioneered a series of open-air concerts in August, creating a unique Aussie style ‘party pen’ formula with star pickets and bunting which inspired the UK’s scaffold version. In early October through heavy uncertainty, they hosted ‘Sky Ball’ a successful COVID-safe concert series as a tribute

to the cancelled Gum Ball and Skyline festivals. The ‘party pens’ were once again in full force across the large outdoor arena. The online portion Sky Ball TV streamed over 30 individual concerts featuring a wealth of regional New South Wales artists. Now as we near the end of a curveball year, Dashville have put together a rather attractive three-day New Year escape known as A Fresh Start. This family-friendly, three-day escape of musical recreation and leisurely relaxation kicks off 31 December 2020 and rolls through 1–2 January 2021. With three evenings of live music planned accompanied by onsite bush camping and a range of COVID-safe daily activities for the whole family, it’s looking like A Fresh Start will be precisely what the doctor ordered! Tickets are now on sale, with artists announcement coming soon! More info about this and other up and coming events can be found via the Dashville website at www.dashville.com.au

Love

WHERE YOU LIVE

NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA’S SEVENTH-LARGEST CITY AND ONCE KNOWN FOR ITS BHP STEELWORKS, COAL AND A LITTLE BAND CALLED SILVERCHAIR HAS, IN THE PAST TWO DECADES, REINVENTED ITSELF AS A BUSTLING MULTICULTURAL CITY AND A VIBRANT PLACE TO LIVE WITH A DIVERSE ECONOMY BASED AROUND BOTH INDUSTRY AND THE SERVICE SECTOR. However, regional cities such as Newcastle are moving away from the traditional manufacturing and agricultural industries that powered their growth over the 20th century toward more professional and service-based economies. For example, the largest employment sectors in this region are health, education and social services. Apart from being an attractive business and investment location, the Hunter offers residents a lifestyle that is hard to

WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN

match, and it does so at a cost of living well below that of the major metropolitan areas across Australia. For those of us lucky enough to live here, there is no better place to live, or a place that offers so much diversity with its pristine beaches, cosmopolitan nightlife and of course Australia’s premier wine region right on our doorstep – not to mention an outstanding place to raise a family. But of course, with recent global developments, the secret is out, and those city slickers residing in the major capital cities have used the pandemic as a catalyst to fast forward any dreams of pursuing a life filled with more affordable housing, less traffic congestion and evenings walking along golden beaches.

Beyond a stripped-back lifestyle, buyers are seeking affordability as prices in capital cities continue to climb. Regional cities such as Newcastle and Lake Macquarie are amongst the many regional towns and cities capitalising on this trend – not to mention offering a tonic for city dwellers overcome by pandemic-induced malaise. Tree changers are also buying up big in regional areas such as the Hunter Valley which is up there as one of Australia’s top 10 affordable tree change locations. While pre-COVID living in a regional area and working for a city-based company may have seemed impossible, the lockdown phase has shown that physical proximity to a workplace is less important when buying a home and people can effectively work from home without having to battle peakhour traffic to be productive. Before COVID-19 hit, there was already a strong trend of sea and tree-change homebuyers looking for the best of all worlds – lifestyle, accessibility to employment hubs and affordable housing – especially amongst the over 40 demographic. But there is now also an increasing tendency for younger families to move away from employment hubs to an area with better lifestyle prospects. And it is not just owner-occupiers who want to move away from the cities; big, property investors are also becoming more drawn to regional markets. As a result of this net migration coupled with affordable housing prices and low interest rates, the region’s economy is looking reasonably resilient over the next few years encouraging investment and the introduction of new technologies and fuelling the demand for new residential and commercial developments as well as tourism.

BESPOKE ITEMS LOVINGLY CREATED

At Cosy Iron WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

WHEN YOU ORDER A HANDMADE WROUGHT-IRON PRODUCT FROM COSY IRON DESIGN, YOU’RE NOT JUST GETTING A PIECE OF METAL. YOU’RE GETTING A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF AN AGE-OLD ARTISANAL CRAFT, AND THE CULMINATION OF 50+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE FROM ARTISTIC BLACKSMITH RENÉ RASMUSSEN. René and his wife Judith emigrated to Australia from Denmark 25 years ago. Back in their home country, René was carrying on the tradition of blacksmithing and iron artistry that had been passed through generations in his family since 1784. Following his grandfather and uncles into the craft in 1969, he served his apprenticeship repairing horse carts and shoeing draft horses for Carlsberg Breweries, then trained in orthopaedic horseshoeing and became a certified farrier. From there, it was on to the highest of heights: as well as taking over his old master’s contract with Carlsberg, René was appointed to the Danish Royal Stables, becoming the blacksmith and farrier to the Queen of Denmark! This involved shoeing the royal horses and carrying out artistic blacksmithing at some of the Queen’s castles – a high-profile role indeed. But after a while, René decided he was ready for a new challenge. And so, in 1995, he and Judith packed a shipping container full of René’s heirloom blacksmith tools and set off for Australia, bringing all that experience and expertise to our shores. Those same heirloom tools still serve René today, as he and Judith create new works and artistic restorations from their Cosy Iron Design workshop in Medowie. René is the embodiment of the old-fashioned artisan. Follow the sounds of hammer and anvil, and you’ll find him ensconced in his forge, working with a combination of traditional and modern tools to create bespoke items for all manner of clients. Judith, affectionately dubbed ‘The

Master’s Apprentice’ by her husband, adds her creative talents to the mix as well; a diploma-certified welder with a good knowledge of fabrication and steel manufacturing, she sculpts her own original designs for smaller products such as wine racks and candelabras. Cosy Iron products are a combination of age-old artistry and uncompromising quality. René and Judith work together in collaboration with architects, designers, builders, fabricators and individual clients to create a mix of classic and modern wrought-iron designs. They specialise in restoration as well as new work, so whether you’ve got a functional or decorative piece that needs some attention or you’re in search of something new, Cosy Iron is the place to call. Attention to detail and a keen eye for classic design elements shine through in every custom-made piece. The husband-and-wife team’s repertoire includes various indoor and outdoor furniture items; Juliet balconies and staircases; gates, fences and security grilles; fire screens and tools; hinges, brackets and hand-forged nails; candelabras and mirrors; beds and bedheads; flower boxes and garden items; wine racks and hat and coat stands; unique sculptures; wedding accessories; and much more. If you have a unique one-off piece in mind, be it large or small, all you need to do is talk to the Cosy Iron team. In an age of mass production where the art of handcrafting sometimes seems all but lost, master craftspeople like René are a rare find. So if you do commission a product from Cosy Iron Design, be sure to treasure it. Not only will it become a unique focal point in your home or garden, it can also be passed down as an heirloom for years to come. The Cosy Iron Design workshop is located at 619A Medowie Road, Medowie. Renovation Value Hits Four-Year High The value of residential alterations and additions has risen to the highest level in more than four years, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ABS Building Approvals for August found that the value of alterations and additions to residential buildings was substantial in August, up 7% to $784 million, to be the highest level recorded since April 2016. The stellar result is likely partly due to the HomeBuilder scheme, but also an increase in the number of people undertaking renovations during the lockdown, according to a New South Wales renovation expert. Author of The Happy Renovator and Newcastle local, Werine Erasmus, says many Australians are choosing to use the downtime to start or finish renovation projects on their homes or investment properties. “The problem with many renovators who attempt to complete projects in their ‘spare time’ is that they often don’t have any time to spare,” Ms Erasmus says. “However, the lockdown created the ideal conditions for many people to restart or finish their renovation projects.” Ms Erasmus believes renovations will continue to grow in popularity in the months ahead as more people transition to working from home or perhaps move to parttime employment. For more information about the book and loads of helpful advice, visit www.thehappyrenovator.com.au

Jetmaster Newcastle WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW JETMASTER NEWCASTLE IS WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR EXTENSIVE RANGE OF PREMIUM FIREPLACE PRODUCTS. OFFERING A START-TO-FINISH SERVICE, THEY’LL PROVIDE EVERYTHING FROM INITIAL DESIGN TO COMPLETED FIREPLACE INSTALLATION. BUT DID YOU KNOW THEY’RE ALSO THE REGION’S PREMIER SUPPLIER OF PERIOD ARCHITECTURAL HARDWARE AND ACCESSORIES? Whether you’re restoring the interior of an old building to its former glory, styling a new property with a period feel, or striking the right balance between modernity and historic charm, fittings and fixtures deserve just as much attention as major architectural elements. Functionally, some traditional hardware aspects can’t be replaced with modern alternatives. And aesthetically, the amount of difference that can be made by just the right antique copper doorknob or brass light switch is often quite surprising. For over ten years, Jetmaster has been the go-to local destination for period interior styling and home restoration projects. At the expansive Adamstown showroom, you’ll discover all the fittings your period or Federation-style home requires. We’re talking everything from traditional door,

window and cabinet hardware to brass accents, pressed metal panels, unique glass and ceramic doorknobs, and more. It’s easy to see why Jetmaster has been a long-time favourite with local builders, cabinet-makers, kitchen designers and architects, as well as the home DIY crowd. Robin Hastings, owner of Jetmaster Newcastle, says there’s a real resurgence in the market for these kinds of architectural hardware products – especially since the last season of The Block – where contestants renovated period homes from the 1910’s through to the 1950’s. “When renovating – especially in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, where there are a lot of older homes – people are trying to strike that balance of updating their residences without losing the charm and historical aspect of their home, he explains. “That’s where we come in, providing advice and an extensive range of products. And the range certainly is extensive. Browsing the Jetmaster catalogue online or in person at the showroom, you’ll find a huge range of meticulously crafted reproductions of authentic originals collected from around Australia. There

Traditional window accessories, house name signs, period tiles, heritage-style Bakelite electrical outlets and switches, and other hardware sundries all offer the unique touch you might be looking for. Basically, it’s a complete treasure trove for anyone with a passion for authentic period styling. Jetmaster’s architectural hardware products also include a popular range of pressed tin sheeting and accessories. Patterns based on original early Australian designs are faithfully reproduced in mill-finish aluminium, which has been treated to accept either powder coating or paint. But if all this sounds a little overwhelming to you, don’t worry – the Jetmaster team is here to offer expert advice on every part of the process, from pattern selection to installation to ongoing maintenance. “Our pressed tin range has become increasingly popular the last couple of years as people find all-new ways to incorporate it into their homes – not only as a traditional ceiling panel but as a design feature such as a kitchen, laundry or bathroom splashback, a feature wall or even a bedhead, Robin explains. “The range of pressed tin can be powder-coated to your specifications and, of course, Jetmaster can organise skilled tradespeople to carry out all your installations.

FAQ#1: What is involved in an interior design consultation? I have never used an interior designer before. The initial consultation runs for 1-2 hours. We come to you and discuss your project and the scope of the work you require. We bounce ideas on the spot and give advice where we can immediately. From there, we will send you a Scope of Works, with 1-3 packages for you to choose from for us to do the project with you. The difference between each package is how much involvement you want from us. For example, the Silver package would be mood boards for the rooms you want to transform, and from there you run with it. A Gold package would include the mood boards, layouts, fixtures and cabinetry finishes selections. A Platinum package would be all of the Gold, plus trade coordination, product purchase and installation, and a styling session at the completion of the job, with an ‘Accessories Pull’ to ensure all the little things are coordinated in to complete the look. FAQ#2: Do you only use your suppliers, or can we shop elsewhere? We specify products from our own suppliers – we have over 100 of them! We pride ourselves on not providing a cookie-cutter design service, and our clients do not come to us for that either. Saying that, we will provide a mood board, and this can be used as a ‘style guide’. If you are out and find a chair or cushion that you love, send through a picture, and we will advise ‘yes’ or ‘no’. There will always be a logical reason for a ‘no’. For example, a turquoise cushion may not suit the warm neutral scheme you are going for. At the end of the day, we understand it is your home, not ours, and your comfort and love of all the pieces in it is vital for a successful design.

FAQ#3: What is a typical budget we should set for furniture and accessories? This is dependent on the scope of the job, the size of the house, and if you are incorporating existing pieces. We will discuss a budget to work towards if needed and advise if a given one is realistic to accomplish what you are wanting to achieve or not. It also helps us know which supplies we are going to be looking at for sourcing. Also, consider whether window coverings are to be included in the budget or have their own. These are not to be an afterthought, but part of the overall design.

FAQ#4: What services do you offer? Is it only full house designs? We help select fabrics for cushions only or source ready-made ones. If you need a few pieces to finish a space (an ‘Accessories Pull’ as we call it), we will bring pieces to you and style them up. We can do a revamp of your bookshelves using your own pieces. We can source and specify cabinetry. You may only be in need of a rug and side table and one artwork, and we can do this. Or you might be at plan stage and need guidance on the specification for window coverings and where to allow for power, what practical elements should be considered. We can select all flooring, paints, furniture, accessories, window coverings, wallpapers and artworks and organise their purchase, delivery and installation. All to make it easy for you!

LIFESTYLE FOR FUTURE RESIDENTS WORDS MCCLOY GROUP

AWARD-WINNING HUNTER-BASED DEVELOPER, MCCLOY GROUP HAS A VERSATILE HISTORY IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY, BUT IT IS THEIR FOCUS ON CREATING FAMILY-FRIENDLY, AWARD-WINNING COMMUNITIES THAT IS FRONT OF MIND IN TODAY’S REAL ESTATE MARKET, WITH AN ONGOING REPUTATION FOR ATTRACTING PURCHASERS SO EAGER TO SECURE LAND ACROSS THE HUNTER, THEY’RE WILLING TO CAMP A WEEK IN ADVANCE!

Across Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens McCloy Group have seven active communities with the likes of the UDIA awarded Heritage Parc Maitland, lakeside haven Billy’s Lookout in Teralba and impressively spacious The Bower at Medowie to their name. The team are known to identify sites for their position and opportunity to create a unique and promising lifestyle for future residents. Their newest community, Hereford Hill in Lochinvar launched in October of 2020, with all 19 homesites under deposit by the close of the launch weekend. Not to mention over 30 display homes are also locked in for a brand-new display village on the site. “We identified the site for its position on the New England Highway and its strategic location as the gateway to the Lochinvar Urban Release Area. It provided a promising opportunity for future residents and builders, and we look forward to partnering with them in the Display Village. We’re sure those in the new build market will be impressed with the community playground facilities and displays to come” noted Sam Rowe, Project Director.

Similarly, both of the McCloy Communities in Medowie, The Gardens and The Bower experienced demand so high they had prospective purchasers camping to ensure their spot in the line. The McCloy team attribute some of the spikes in demand to the changing lifestyle of Australians after the effects of COVID. They see more often families looking for space and opportunity away from typical city locations. McCloy Sales teams have experienced young families flocking to the area for land affordability and a clear rise in Sydney based enquiry. Port Stephen’s scenic towns have seen the demand for residential land grow year on year, in many parts it's affordability and proximity to Newcastle CBD whilst still maintaining that country feel are to be well credited. A large portion of the current buyer’s market are millennials, a demographic, who’re of the age where they’re seeking to enter the property market and the years of starting families, many of which are creating a clear trend in making a move away from the bright city lights towards more affordable housing options in regional Australia. With demographers predicting the upward trend in relocating to regional Australia to flourish over the coming years. The Hunter offers an attractive mix for Australian’s not just millennials, offering a sought-after combination of housing affordability and proximity to work opportunities both in the Hunter and by connection down the M1 to Sydney. Not to mention the enviable lifestyle with the beaches of Newcastle to the east, vineyards to the west and the Barrington’s to the north-west, those in the Hunter really are spoilt for choice! Team this with the Government’s HomeBuilder grant, a grant of $25,000 for eligible Australians build a new home, and now more than ever property seekers are turning to new residential communities to seize the opportunity! According to the Regional Australia Institute, regional

towns and new builds in the Hunter are in the eye of many Australians, in terms of household income, proximity to schools and average house price. Many buyers are discovering that building new is often more affordable than renovating an existing property, with a brand new fourbedroom, two-bathroom, double garage house at Potter’s Lane, Raymond Terrace starting at just $525,356 for house and land.

FOR THOSE SEEKING THE LIFESTYLE BUT STILL A CLOSE CONNECTION TO SYDNEY, NEW COMMUNITIES IN LAKE MACQUARIE ARE A MAJOR DRAWCARD. Its location near the M1 and nearby train stations allow an easy connection to Sydney when required, but foster an affordable ‘lakeside lifestyle’ with nearby work opportunities in Newcastle CBD only 30 minutes away by car. The Regional Australia Institute’s figures for Lake Macquarie were also in support of the coastal town, with the median house price at $575,375 and average years for a mortgage at 33, by comparison to Parramatta in inner Sydney sitting at 65 years for the average mortgage repayment. It’s no surprise the move to regional towns is increasing year on year. If you’re looking to make your move into the property market or lighten your burden from hefty mortgage repayments over the long term, exploring the new residential communities in the Hunter is highly encouraged. McCloy Group has been creating master-planned communities across the Hunter for several decades, so when looking for land a drive through their communities across Maitland, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens is a must. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 35

THE KAIJU!

GOLDEN AXE CIDER

Tasting Paddle “Unashamedly intense, devastatingly good craft beer and cider.”

IT ’S A PRETTY BIG CLAIM FROM THE MAKERS OF NEW CRAFT BEER BRAND KAIJU! AND ONE WE THOUGHT WE’D PUT TO THE TEST THIS MONTH WITH A TASTE-TEST OF THEIR FOUR TOP-SELLERS. HERE’S WHAT WE FOUND…

MAIN SQUEEZE If there’s one thing we need this coming Summer, it’s a Passion Guava Session Ale! Originally sold as a limited release, Main Squeeze Passion Guava Session Ale was received so well at the time that KAIJU! decided to make it a permanent part of the range. At 3.2% it is a smaller beer, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make a big impact. A refined malt profile complimented by a bright fruit bomb of passionfruit and guava, give this mid-strength the kind of full taste and aroma you can go back to. Kind of like your main squeeze.

KAIJU KRUSH! The first thing that grabbed us with KAIJU Krush! was the artwork on the can – a giant pineapple creature rising out of the sand, looking super cool, while a boatload of tropical fruit heads in to feed him! Pouring it into a glass, we were hit with aromas of tropical fruit and stone fruit. On the palate, that tropical flavour hits you with those juicy, Summery vibes carrying the kind of bitterness that you would expect from a good craft beer. Released in 2016, Krush was the pioneer of the tropical pale ale style, and it’s still Krushing it now.

We’ve noticed that so many ciders have a sweet or super sweet flavour profile which is nice for a few sips, but it gets to be too much, and we tend to stop there. We were so glad when we tasted Golden Axe and found a well-balanced cider with a medium to dry flavour profile that you can have more than one of. Made from freshly crushed Australian apples, (not from concentrate) Golden Axe Crisp Apple Cider carries an aroma of fresh-cut apples and blossom. It’s vegan friendly and is registered as gluten-free by Coeliac Australia.

METAMORPHOSIS IPA This IPA’s hop aroma hits you as soon as you pour it into the glass, it was obvious the brewers used an absolute stack of hops, but that’s what IPA’s are all about isn’t it? KAIJU! have again delivered on the artwork, with that hop creature on the front of the can giving us a hint of what was to come. At a relatively high 6.7% alcohol, Metamorphosis IPA carries the flavour really well, isn’t at all overwhelming, and keeps its hefty malt profile perfectly balanced by that refreshing hop bitterness.

Local stockists include: The Happy Wombat, Warners at the Bay, Tighes Hill Cellars, The Bottle-O Lambton, Cellarbrations at Adamstown and The Prince of Wales in Merewether.

ON TOUR WITH THE KID

A Change is on the Horizon WORDS CHLOE O’SULLIVAN – ON TOUR WITH THE KID What we see currently playing out on the international stage is a direct result of the person you become if you’re raised with all the privilege and none of the consequences! For those of us who have chosen to be parents or have children who might not be ours in our lives, how the next generation turns out falls squarely at our feet. We don’t get to lament the lack of work ethic, manners, empathy or sportsmanship without being a model for those things in our own lives and our own homes. We are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, and this year has been a tough one by anyone’s standards. We were not even over the stress of the fires before COVID-19 kicked in. We suddenly had to worry about teaching kids from home while concern for our own physical and mental health, and our livelihood became a constant talking point among friends and family. It was tough, but we got through it. We were never in danger of losing the roof over our head, of not putting food on the table. We came out the other side scared but held together. I’m painfully aware that had we gone into 38 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

that crisis a few rungs lower down the ladder either physically or economically, the outcome could have been very different. My instinct as a mum is to make sure there are a few extra things under the tree this year just to try in some small way to make up for the pain and heartache of the past few months. It’s nice when you can do that for your kids. As the saying goes, however, with great privilege comes great responsibility. My mum has always been one to lead by example, and four years ago, we came up with a tradition that has continued to this day. As the advent calendar begins its count down on December 1 to the big day, the kid gets her chocolate every day, but it also comes with a note about something nice that we need to do for someone else. All the tasks are specifically chosen to reflect our family values and the things and people that we love.

These are a few of the things we have chosen this year: • Make shortbread with her grandmothers’ recipe and deliver it to our neighbours. They have been such a huge source of love and support during a challenging year. • Donate a dress to The Marninwarnitikura Women Resource Centre in the Fitzroy Valley in WA. Their goal is to reach 1000 dresses in the next 12 months to gift to the women, so we are going to round up some dresses and help them out. • Put a special compost bin system into the garden. The environment is important, and we want to cut down as much waste as we can. • My mum has a huge affection for Turtles and regularly donates to wildlife funds, so this year the kid has adopted and tracked a turtle from a rescue Centre in Florida (we have already picked out Turtle and her name is Justice Ginsburg, which we thought was appropriate) • Host a board game night for a small group of friends. I’m sure there are things that are important to your family and the qualities you want to instil in your own children. I know we do it all year round but when the world feels like it’s falling apart, now seems like the perfect time to give our kids the skills to put it back together eventually.

Happy Holidays from the Kid and I.

Accessible & Affordable Education When it’s Needed Most THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC HAS IMPACTED ON EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE. WITH INSTABILITY AND INSECURITY AT EVERY TURN, TRYING TO NAVIGATE THESE CHANGES CAN SEEM DAUNTING. Atwea has always strived to provide a stable learning platform that could flex and adjust to the ever-changing needs of the community. While Atwea and its communities have faced many challenges over its 100-year history, in this current climate, adaptability has never been more important. As a provider of education and learning to some of our community’s most vulnerable, our role is to connect with our community and respond to their shifting needs to ensure that we can assist our community as best we can. Despite the challenges, Atwea has been able to harness opportunities for the community in new and innovative ways, providing learning and education pathways that add value to individuals and communities with economic outcomes. As COVID-19 took hold of 2020, our experience told us to move quickly to ensure that our community could access an appropriate mix of education and training courses in ways that were safe, practical and appropriate to a changing world. We know that after times of crisis, people will look to diversify, update and reaffirm their competitiveness within their personal and professional lives. We also know that many look in very different directions and would demand different ways of accessing learning opportunities. In response, Atwea has worked with local employers to help craft skill set courses, qualifications and learning pathways that will not only provide our community with the right skills to tackle new markets but will support individuals

to plan their next career move. With the assistance of a NSW Government Grant, Atwea brought forward a number of skills training courses and learner designed programs to help prepare the community for a changed workplace landscape. Atwea focused on providing courses in skill sets in focused service industries, business, health and community services. It also provided training for entry-level job seekers through customised skill sets. The College was successful in securing the grant through the government’s Training Services NSW, Department of Education under the ACE Relief to combat the effects of the COVID-19 crisis. This grant supported the development of adaptive learning and training delivery methods specifically for people who have been redeployed, unemployed, low to middle-income adults who were at home or considering future job prospects. We remain committed to our core business of providing quality face to face education, however, in assisting the community’s transition to flexible and accessible learning platforms, we have also integrated online options into many Atwea courses, including Diploma and accredited skills training qualifications. This is an essential step in ensuring that Atwea’s courses are accessible and relevant to our students. Atwea also acknowledges the importance of offering opportunities for our community to engage in learning programs that advance their personal wellbeing. Given the current climate, community assistance extends beyond employability, and towards a further focus on wellbeing. The coronavirus pandemic has created staggering levels of isolation and discontent within the broader community. Atwea believes that an important aspect of its operation lies with its ability to facilitate personal growth and connections. Atwea continues to offer a wide range of courses for those wishing to form social connects, or simply learn a new skill. Now more than ever, there is a need for people to be able to access relevant training facilities. Whether it’s helping students find a job, advancing their careers or learn for fun, Atwea strives to create an environment that is both affordable and accessible to all.

AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE LEARNING OPTIONS DESIGNED FOR OUR STUDENTS

Atwea College is currently offering courses to help you find a job, advance your career or learn something for fun.

You're Invited to Celebrate International Day of People with Disability with us! What: Join us to celebrate artists with a disability at our Inclusive exhibition Where: City Library, 15 Laman Street Newcastle When: Dec 3rd to 11th 9:30am- 8pm Mon to Thurs 9:30am - 6pm Friday 9:30am - 2pm Saturday

ARTISTS WITH DISABILITIES TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY ON DECEMBER 3RD, LOCAL NDIS AND DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT SERVICE PROVIDER CASTLE PERSONNEL ARE HOSTING AN INCLUSIVE ART EXHIBITION AT NEWCASTLE CITY LIBRARY. The exhibition features an array of artworks, created by people who have an injury, illness or mental health condition in the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast regions. “The diversity of the artworks displayed reflect the spectrum of disabilities, highlighting each artist’s unique experience with illness, injury and mental health conditions. We are proud to support these artists and provide a space where they can share these experiences with the community,” said Castle CEO Dianne Hamer.

Samantha Ogilvie lost her eyesight as a child due to cancer and uses her artistic talents to showcase her perspective of the world as a person with a visual impairment. “I’ve had people tell me that they feel like I’m missing out because I can’t see a sunrise, or I don’t know what my nieces and nephews look like and this way I can actually show them that that’s not true. I may not see the world in the same way as people who can see, but I can still see the world and see the things around me,” she said. Samantha believes art can be used to educate people about disabilities “because it’s done in a fun way and it can be done in a story, so it’s not so confronting, or it doesn’t make people feel quite so uncomfortable.” The exhibition will be launched at Newcastle City Library on 3 December and will be available to the public until 11 December. The library is located at 15 Laman Street, Newcastle and admission to the event is free.

RIGHT: EMLYN DAVIES, FOUNDER OF THE BUSINESS IN 1927

Putting Your Best Foot Forward with

DAVIES SHOES WORDS PAM DAVIES DAVIES SHOES MAYFIELD IS A NAME SYNONYMOUS WITH QUALITY FOOTWEAR. Established 94 years ago, and a landmark in Mayfield for the past 81, this familyowned and operated business offers expert fitting and advice from people who genuinely understand the importance of foot health for all the family. Situated in the heart of Mayfield, Davies Shoes is well-positioned with convenient parking for its customers, some of whom travel extraordinary distances to find that ‘perfect pair’ of shoes. Store owner/ manager, Ivor Davies, understands that the product is only half of the story. “Even the best quality shoe is a waste of money if not correctly fitted,” he said. Experience and expertise have seen Davies Shoes develop into a unique business within the Hunter Region, and its reputation is second to none. “We are passionate about what we do and constantly strive for excellence,” Ivor said. Word of mouth recommendations sees a constant stream of customers, both familiar and new, visiting the store. Appreciative of the knowledge and understanding of their footwear needs, successive generations of families continue to shop at Davies Shoes, and close bonds are inevitable. “There is something magical about the friendships forged with our customers over the years,” Ivor said. Catering to the footwear needs of the whole family, the store is a one-stop-shop for adults and children’s shoes alike, whether for business, casual or school wear. Customers at Davies Shoes are treated to an extensive range of European brands including Birkenstock, Naot, Pikolinos, Alegria, Rockport, Florsheim and Jacoform, to name a few. For casual and sporting wear, the store offers New Balance in a variety of width fittings, and a unique and comfy range of slippers from Spanish company De Valverde ensures that all footwear needs are met.

Growing feet are specially catered for at Davies Shoes, with precise measurement and fitting central to every footwear purchase for your child. As stockists of the Clarks Premium school shoe range, Davies Shoes takes care to match each child’s feet to the most suitable style, ensuring correct length, width and maximum growth room without compromising fit. Clark’s Premium school shoes come in six different widths as well as half sizes, allowing the expert fitters at Davies Shoes to ‘fine-tune’ for the best fit possible. Ivor recommends having your children’s feet accurately measured at the start of each year to ensure they go back to school with their feet properly supported. “Children spend over 30 hours a week in their school shoes, so expert fitting is essential,” Ivor said. “Clarks Premium school shoes offer all the other features needed to ensure healthy, growing feet.” Davies Shoes are also experienced in fitting ‘problem feet’ and are well known for stocking footwear that can accommodate the very narrow to the extra wide foot. “Some of our customers have found a favourite brand and comfortable style that they love so much, they simply update to a different colour each season,” senior fitting expert, Linda, said. Many people today wear orthotics, and Davies Shoes recognises the importance of maximising their effectiveness by ensuring they are housed in properly fitted footwear. “Shoes need to be supportive, flexible enough not to twist, and deep enough at the heel to accommodate the orthotics,” Ivor said, whose years of experience working closely with podiatrists and physiotherapists have further added to the wonderful reputation enjoyed by Davies Shoes. 2020 has presented many new challenges for everyone, and Davies Shoes is no exception. Whilst it has always focused on its role as a bricks and mortar store, during lock-down earlier in the year, it continued to serve its customers, taking orders via Facebook and phone and providing contactless delivery. “Our customers will always be our priority. We are grateful for their continued support and look forward to serving them well into the future,” Ivor said.

me are suffering not only from inadequacies around their dental treatment, but even more importantly they have an inadequacy around their understanding of home care requirements, diet, general health impacts on dental health as well as lifestyle factors such as shiftwork. Presenting such a patient with an “exotic treatment plan” – often one that carries an overall cost of 20, 30 or sometimes even $40,000 sets these patients up for depression and hopelessness. This is without out even considering the requirements that fall on the patient regarding home care, pluses and minuses of the treatment plan as well as costs, in case something goes wrong. Remember, the more complex a treatment plan, the more places things can go wrong within the plan.

KEEPING IT

Simple

Most people who contact me regarding dental treatment have suffered a combination of neglect as well as being unsure of how to proceed with the care of their teeth and jaws. A small proportion have had the misfortune of having exotic dental care presented to them: care that is not only way beyond their budget, but also beyond their current ‘dental IQ.’

What is the solution around treatment planning? I’ve always subscribed to a planning methodology that embraces the following: 1. Keep it as simple as possible – especially when you’re starting out with a new patient; 2. A keen focus on education – the patient must be clear on shortcomings of the plan (no plan is perfect) and what kind of maintenance program they are signing up for; 3. A progressive method that underpins the plan (I’ll talk about this below); 4. Most importantly: Keep the plan as conservative as you possibly can. An alternative way of saying this is: try, at all times, to make the plan as reversible as possible.

What do I mean by dental IQ? Dental IQ is a patient’s own understanding of how to manage their dental health. Many of the patients that have come to

Keep it as simple as possible – Identify the key teeth – these are the teeth that provide function, whether it be cosmetic (patient’s ability to smile) or masticatory (ability to chew).

WORDS ALEX HUSZTI - BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on low-biologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.

Priorities are set, usually starting with teeth most in need or most questionable teeth running down to teeth that warrant attention but are not so urgent. An assessment of gum disease status is also vital at this point. These are simple assessments to maximize the patient’s own existing functional capacity before even considering any additions to their capacity. Education – Combine a diagnosis appointment (discussion of planning strategy) with the home care instruction that the patient receives in conjunction with their dental cleaning appointment, information sheets and coaching provided at regular review appointments. Over some years, the patient can develop a good understanding of how to manage their dental health. Education = prevention. Progressive treatment methodology – Simply put: progressive treatment methodology is about treating problems at the most basic level that we believe will provide a solution for the patient. We can monitor patient response to the implemented treatment and review patient needs as required. Sure, sometimes, we may need to treat a problem using a more sophisticated or involved method – and this is a disadvantage to this system. However, the progressive escalation of the treatment protocols, when required, also reduces or eliminates OVER-TREATMENT of a problem. Combine this with… A laser focus on saving every speck of viable tooth structure – If I can make plans for my patients that are as close as possible to being reversible – I’ve significantly eliminated patient risks associated with dental care, as well as improved my scope to provide simple and effective lifetime care to my patients. This is my core belief around the delivery of dental care.

3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1

Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.

2

Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)

3

Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.

Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T STRESS ABOUT

Gaining Holiday Kilos WORDS GJENAE ROSEKELLY – PLANET FITNESS

IT ’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN GYMS GET QUIETER AND ANTICIPATION SURROUNDING THE HOLIDAY SEASON SLOWLY ESCALATES. We’re all thinking about the impending Christmas parties, the family vacation we have booked, the time we have off work and what delicious meals will fill our tables. To contrast with the growing excitement is dread, with Planet Fitness members questioning how they can prevent gaining 5kgs over the holiday period, asking how they can stay fit and healthy while on holiday, and expressing general concerns about over-indulgence. The connected feelings are clear – there is a fear of gaining weight during the holidays. Although this is an understandable concern, what we don’t often consider is that the psychological behaviours associated with fearing weight gain could be doing you more damage. In a time where we should be celebrating, there seems to be a subconscious worry that you can’t properly enjoy yourself without severe repercussions. I spoke with Planet Fitness Member Sarah, aged 38 and a mother of one, about why she feels on-coming stress about gaining weight over the holiday period. “I already gained some weight during COVID-19, so I guess I’m worried about

making it worse during Christmas. I want to enjoy myself, but I don’t want to rewind on the progress I have made since then,” says Sarah. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that we don’t make great decisions based on fear. Every family has been under a significant amount of strain that is unique to them, so this added stress that they believe will impact their physical health is troubling. Once you understand that holding yourself to such a high expectation is not healthy, you can improve your happiness by changing your thoughts and actions to relieve some stress. If you are worried that the holiday period will disrupt your gym or eating routine, then it begs the question that the routine may have been too strict to begin with. As long as we live, we need to continually check that we have a healthy relationship with food because that can impact our energy levels, mood and sleep, which directly correlates to our mental and physical health. “I feel like I have lost track of my relationship with food because although I know I shouldn’t be worrying about whether one big day of binge eating and drinking will make me gain weight, I can’t help but already feel bad about it,” says Sarah. Over-indulgence and over-consumption is harmful in any capacity. This does not mean you can’t enjoy your favourite dish, side, dessert and wine. Research has shown that one big meal, or one big week, will not significantly make a difference. The old tale about listening to your body will always hold true. If you can feel your body or mind not being comfortable with the amount you’re consuming, then enable your willpower to take over so you can stop for the time being. Not prioritising the gym during December is OK, because it’s a time to focus on rejoicing not only with food but with every aspect of your life. Planet Fitness will be there when you decide to come back, and not feeling guilty during the holiday period will help your mind to be in a better place because you were in control of your happiness. If you are still feeling negative thoughts about your health during the holiday period, we recommend talking to a personal trainer or mental health professional. And instead of choosing ‘losing weight’ as your New Year’s Resolution, try this one: ‘Be good to my mind and my body.’ Happy New Year from all of us at Planet Fitness.

3 SIMPLE STRETCHES

To Prevent Injury WORDS TOM RUSSELL – NextGen Physio So much of what we do as physiotherapists is working with our patients to fix their specific problem (or problems!) This ranges from rehabilitating after an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction, sorting out a kinked neck after a bad nights sleep, all the way to managing Plantar Fasciitis. The list is honestly endless! Luckily, some common stretches are a bit more general that can be for those niggling little tight areas that are troubling you, but not enough to seek out a physiotherapy appointment. A great rule of thumb is if something musculoskeletal is bothering you for more than 4–7 days (whether this is associated with exercise or not), then you should get it checked out. Often these sort of problems manifest from there and lead to further issues, often a full-blown injury. In that little 4–7 day window though, try one of the following stretches that might be appropriate for you. It might just be possible to manage the problem without our help. If any of the “caution” markers apply to you for any of these stretches, you should see a physio, and it is not appropriate to follow a generalised routine like the one outlined. Visit www.nextgenphysiotherapy.com.au/blog for images of each stretch. ROLLING YOUR FOOT WITH A FOOTEEZ Okay so this isn’t technically a stretch but rolling out the bottom of your feet feels great and can help ease general foot and calf/leg soreness. If you don’t have a Footeez, then try a tennis ball or whatever your heart desires. Great for foot pain, arch discomfort, calf pain, Achilles niggle and back of leg tightness. Roll 1–2 minutes for each foot, 1–2 times per day maximum. Caution: rolling too hard, rolling a foot that is more than a 4/10 pain or previous history of Plantar Fasciitis. F

LUMBAR LOCK ROTATION Because your hips and knees are flexed, all the movement happens at the THORACIC part of your spine, which is primarily responsible for rotation through our spine. So many of us are commonly tight in this area because in this modern society - we simply don’t rotate enough! It’s not ideal to go from sitting and not rotating to rotating in the gym or any other facet of your life, so this one fills the gap! Great for: neck pain, mid-back tightness, lower back pain, stiff feeling through sternum/rib/abdominal area, prolonged sitting/ office workers and poor posture. Complete 2-4 sets of 10 repetitions on each side, at least once per day. Great to do before activity. Caution: if there is nerve pain in the arms and legs associated with your symptoms, you are in more than 4/10 pain, you have a previous spine pathology, or you get pain in your knees or hip when you adopt the position.

DEEP SQUAT An excellent goal is to be able to hold a deep squat position for 60 seconds with your heels flat on the floor, chest nice and proud. This one is tough, and most of us struggle to get into this position. It can tell us a lot about how mobile we are, not only through our ankles but also our knees and hips. Interestingly, many cultures that spend more time in a deep squat position are much less likely to experience knee, ankle and hip problems throughout their life! Great for stiff ankle joints those or who have difficulty getting deep into a squat position. Caution: any pain in this position is a marker that something could be going on that requires a physiotherapist’s assistance, previous knee injury and/or surgery, previous ankle injury and/or surgery. This year we have heard a lot about bugs. Well, one particular type of bug I guess, the coronavirus. (which – just saying – is real and not a population controlling conspiracy!) But I want to discuss other types of bugs that are GOOD for our health – vital in fact! The Skin Microbiome is the name for all the organisms/ bacteria that are on the surface of our skin. I read somewhere that this is one of the latest ‘trends’ in the skin industry. Well, I don’t believe that skin science can be described as a trend. This is, however, an area that scientists are discovering a lot about and how it relates to many of our skin problems. This microbiome is a complex ecosystem that resides on the skin, develops over time and is pretty unique to each individual. Some organisms on the skin are helpful to skin function while others are pathogenic – cause problems. Balance is an important thing. New trials are currently being performed involving altering someone's unhealthy microbiome to make it healthy, by using a probiotic solution carrying organisms harvested from the skin of a person with a positive mix of bugs! Once this is perfected, it will be a game-changer for skin health. Meanwhile, what do we know about this now? Where do we get our unique microbiome? Well, at the beginning of our life, our parents are involved. Later, the food we eat, the roommates we have, and what we subject our skin to. Variables like cleaning, UV light, general health, age, geography, stress etc. all go towards creating our skin bug colony. Skin conditions that are significantly associated with an unbalanced microbiome include Rosacea, Eczema, Acne, Psoriasis, and Seborrhoeic and Peri-oral Dermatitis. There are some bugs in the skin that you might be familiar with, like Staph aureus. It can be responsible for

nasty infections, but small numbers of these bugs are often present on the skin without causing problems. An extra amount of this bug is often found in eczema. It can damage skin’ protective barrier. Staph epidermidis is very common in the skin. It is helpful in small doses as it is anti-inflammatory and can protect from UV damage, and improve skin’s immune function, but large doses can still cause trouble!. It can also help to control Staph aureus. P-acne makes up 90% of bugs on the skin, and there are different strains of this one – some that contribute to causing acne, while others fight the acne-causing variety. So what can we do right now to try and improve our skin bugs? 1. Sweat! Sweating is slightly acid. Skin that is too alkaline can be dry, red, acne-prone and sensitive. The skin’s acid mantle helps provide the skin’s protective barrier. This effects which bugs want to grow there. (Of course for people with back and chest acne my advice will be different, but that’s a story for another day.) 2. Reduce sugars, bad fats (usually found in takeaway/fast food), and, in some people, dairy. This is related to the Gut Microbiome (yes, not surprisingly, the gut has one too). If bugs in your gut are unbalanced, it can become leaky and result in inflammatory proteins entering your system and landing in your skin (the gut/skin axis). So healthy skin is another reason to eat well. 3. Reduce harsh or frequent cleansing. 4. Identify triggers. For example – food sensitivities, skincare sensitive or UV light. 5. Probiotics – oral and topical. Although we don’t yet have the exciting customised probiotic of the future, general skin targeting probiotics are already available (e.g. Imbibe).

Forbidden Love

LOCAL AUTHOR, DARREL MCGOVERN IS A RETIRED HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER FROM FLETCHER. FOR MOST OF HIS LIFE, DARREL HADN’ T FOUND THE TIME TO PURSUE HIS PASSION FOR AUSTRALIAN HISTORY, RESEARCH OR WRITING – BUT THAT ALL CHANGED WHEN HE RETIRED. AND THE RESULT IS HIS NEWLY RELEASED BOOK, THE PRICE OF THE GIFT. A four-part story of forbidden love, The Price of the Gift takes the reader from the horrors of the first world war in Europe to the pampered lives of the aristocracy of London and a race across the vastness of Australia to secure aspirations for one man, domination for another and reparation for yet another. Although the work is fiction, the main character (Harry Street) was a real person

from Darrel’s boyhood. A gentleman, always affable and decidedly English, Darrel could never reconcile why he had succumbed to an exile so readily and why his family had turned their backs on their son. It was this curiosity that was the catalyst for the book. As well as writing, Darrel is a keen fisherman, lawn bowler and golfer. He loves being surrounded by family and friends, and along with his wife, Helen visits Adelaide and Darwin to see his grandchildren as often as possible. The Price of the Gift is available for purchase online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Booktopia, Google Books, Kindle or direct from the publishers Austin Macauley Publishers at www.austinmacauley.com

NSW and ensure the Knights continue to challenge for premierships in the years to come.” Newcastle Knights & Wests Group Australia CEO Philip Gardner said the Knights were on track to move into their new home ahead of the 2022 pre-season in 12 months. FIVE YEAR CLIMATE PLAN FOR CITY City of Newcastle intends to transition to a fleet of electric vehicles, build operational resilience through additional renewables and battery storage, and switch all city lighting to LED over the next five years under a new Climate Action Plan. The Plan covers both City of Newcastle operations and Newcastle as a whole to accelerate emission reduction across the City through a suite of practical and prudent action and initiatives. Working collaboratively with other progressive organisations, the Plan takes advantage of the economic opportunities that arise from a clean energy and low-emissions industry landscape. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the Climate Action Plan would build upon the achievements of recent years that has led to Newcastle being recognised as one of Australia’s leading Cities in sustainability. “City of Newcastle has formally committed to the Paris Climate Agreement, and we accept there is a global climate emergency. We owe it to our children to prioritise concrete action on climate change. As Novocastrians, we have seen firsthand the impacts of climate change, be it the erosion of Stockton Beach or increasingly severe storms that beached the Pasha Bulka,” Cr Nelmes said. “We’re proud to be one of the most progressive cities in the country when it comes to tackling climate change and are confident this new Plan will keep us moving down this path of sustainability. It’s important that as a city leader, we respond to the increasing calls from our community to tackle what is this generations most important challenges.”

NELSON BAY PARKLET

ALL-AROUND THE

Hunter Region A LOT IS GOING ON AROUND THE HUNTER AT THE MOMENT. AS WE AWAKEN FROM OUR COVID-COMA AND RESTRICTIONS AND BORDERS ARE LIFTED WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO 2021 AND ALL THE ‘REVERSALS’ THAT WILL HOPEFULLY COME ALONG WITH THE STRIKE OF MIDNIGHT. HERE’S WHAT 'S BEEN GOING ON IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD.

KNIGHTS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE The Newcastle Knights’ $20 million Centre of Excellence at District Park, Broadmeadow is a step closer following the appointment of construction company Richard Crookes Constructions to build the high performance, training, administration and multi-purpose community facility. The appointment came just one month after Hunterbased civil construction services firm Daracon Group commenced work on the three new playing fields at the site. Member of the Legislative Council Taylor Martin said the project would create 80 jobs and provide a significant boost to the Hunter construction industry as it recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Newcastle Knights are part of the fabric of the Hunter. The club represents the people, and the people represent the club, creating a connection that is unique in Australian sport,” Mr Martin said. “The Knights’ Centre of Excellence will further strengthen this connection by enabling the club to expand its community programs, initiatives and engagement.” Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee said the Knights’ Centre of Excellence would be the envy of sporting administrations around the country. “The Centres of Excellence Program provides integrated world-class high-performance training, administration and community facilities for the identification, development and fostering of rugby league talent,” he said. “Once completed, the Newcastle Knights Centre of Excellence will be the leading rugby league facility in regional 50 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

WATERFRONT SPACE FOR COMMUNITY ENJOYMENT Another quality public space on the waterfront will soon be a reality in the ever-evolving Honeysuckle Precinct, with the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) commencing construction on the next two hectares of public domain. The new Honeysuckle Park forms part of HCCDC’s $55-million spend on infrastructure, and public domain works in the precinct. HCCDC Acting Chief Executive Valentina Misevska said Honeysuckle Park is the first of two hectares of new public domain that HCCDC will deliver across the precinct over coming years. The 4750m2 site at Worth Place will provide open green space for the community to enjoy, with specially created elements reflecting what the community said it wanted to see. “Themes from this engagement have been captured into the design of Honeysuckle Park, such as the sandstone blocks that step down into the water, the shade structures and open lawn areas for picnics,” said Ms Misevska.

“Honeysuckle Park will also celebrate the area’s rich maritime history through the design of a nautical-themed playground and shade sails.” The new public domain will also feature native trees and plants and a wide promenade that will eventually connect all of Honeysuckle through to the Bathers Way. Construction is now underway and is expected to be complete by mid-2021. SUMMER STREET ART SIZZLES AT NELSON BAY Nelson Bay’s streets will soon be brighter and more peoplefriendly with the installation of parklets, street art and activities for locals and visitors to enjoy. The temporary improvements are part of a $700,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s all designed to help support the community during COVID-19 and restart Port Stephens. “These temporary improvements are all about making our streets more vibrant and attractive for locals and visitors alike,” Mayor Palmer said. “Parklets are ‘pop up’ spaces that create more room for people on our streets. They’re designed to be used for all sorts of activities including gatherings, café space, performances, restaurant dining, displaying art and more. “We’re currently constructing the parklets, which will be decorated by a local artist before they’re installed in mid-December. We’re planning plenty of fun activities and activations to make sure there’s always something to enjoy at our new parklets. Mayor Palmer says the ideas are based on improvements identified in the Nelson Bay Town Centre Strategy. “As part of the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan, we identified opportunities to make our streets more peoplefriendly, and this is one way we can trial these improvements and see if people like them. “Next year, we’re also planning to create more public seating at the Stockton Street stage to create a more vibrant town centre.” F

SUGAR VALLEY LAKE MACQUARIE

MELISSA ON HER VESPA

L I V E YO U R L I ST LAKE MACQUARIE’S FIRST LIBRARY MUSEUM Lake Macquarie City Council has released concept designs for the proposed Sugar Valley Library Museum to be constructed next to the newly opened Cameron Park Plaza on Northlakes Drive. Lake Macquarie Mayor Councillor Kay Fraser said the innovative co-located library museum facility promises to be a flexible and inclusive space where everyone is welcome. “The Sugar Valley Library Museum will be one of only a few in the world, and the Hunter Valley’s first converged library and museum building, fusing contemporary library services, technology and community facilities with opportunities to celebrate, promote and captivate through the storytelling of local history,” Cr Fraser said. Council’s Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said the new library museum would provide contemporary creative experiences for residents in the City’s northwest. “Our new library museum will provide an engaging, innovative space at the forefront of what a quality cultural facility can be – multi-use, diverse and engaging,” Ms Hemsley said. “The ultimate aim is to deliver an enhanced experience where people can come together to learn, create and connect. It’s not just about books anymore; it’s about technology, information sharing, creativity, storytelling, gathering and immersion.” In addition to providing library services, the proposed facility will feature a museum collection showcasing the history of the region, with the opportunity to attract touring exhibitions. “Exciting interactive and immersive experiences will allow our community to engage with West Wallsend’s unique history at the museum and via trails to the township of West Wallsend.,” Ms Hemsley said. “We have been working with the West Wallsend District Heritage Group to develop the museum collection and exhibition programs to allow the community to relive

the history of the area. We expect the new facility will see library membership and visitation in the north-west increase by 3035per cent.” Pending approvals, construction on the new cultural facility is expected to start in late 2021, with the facility fully operational in late 2022. SPOTLIGHT ON MORPETH KEEPS SHINING Maitland Council has launched a new business opportunity prospectus for Morpeth that will help see the township continue to thrive and evolve as a destination of choice for residents and visitors. The prospectus has been designed to inspire interest and attract investment from business types identified through community engagement that included existing Morpeth businesses. Based on the results of the research, people want to see the current business offering complemented with additional businesses like artisan food and produce stores, small bars, espresso bars, homewares and wellbeing businesses. The prospectus is an initiative of Council’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery. It will accompany the Central Maitland prospectus launched earlier this year and is supported by Maitland’s Destination Management Plan, which identifies Morpeth as a priority hub. “Council has a real spotlight on Morpeth right now with a range of initiatives including Morph It and planning for Morpeth’s Bicentenary in 2021, and the prospectus is designed to help take advantage of that and inspire interest to drive investment into Morpeth,” said Maitland Mayor, Councillor Loretta Baker Council will distribute the prospectus to key business types identified in the research as well as real estate agents, local businesses and government bodies to help drive interest. You can access the prospectus and Council’s other business support initiatives at www.maitland.nsw.gov.au/business P

GETTING BACK ON THE BIKE WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON Since her early 20's, this Bar Beach notfor-profit founder has wanted to ride a motorcycle. The seed was sown while living in Broome and seeing a girl on a postie bike. It then grew to a Vespa, as her love for Italy became deeper with each movie, documentary and book she consumed about the country. Then on her birthday in 2017, Melissa Histon was gifted a red Vespa. "It was a dream come true. Now I had a bike but no licence," said Melissa. The Got Your Back Sista founder, and Hey Soul Sista podcaster passed the twoday test for her learner rider licence. For a year, she buzzed around town on her Ls. Then Melissa went for her P's – the motor operator skills test – and failed. The one-hour riding skills test included weaving through cones, accelerating and braking, accelerating and dodging obstacles and 180-degree turn in a tight space; all without using a foot on the ground for balance. "I put my foot down three times and failed. I cried and thought I am never going to have a license - something I always wanted. For a week, I really struggled scared to fail again,” Melissa said. "It was the biggest head mission to get back on the bike and try again. I realised, if I didn't, it would be the biggest failure as I did not dare to face my fear." So, Melissa pulled on her helmet, jumped on her scooter and practised every day for an hour. Within a fortnight, she fronted up for the second test feeling anxious, nervous and sick. "I wanted it so bad – it was a lifelong dream. I did the test and passed. There were tears of joy and relief." Melissa now has her full license and loves zipping around the city. Occasionally, she rides further afield to Broadmeadow or Belmont.

"I love being on the road, off on a ride – there is nothing better than the wind in your face. There is a real sense of freedom and adventure." Earlier this year, Melissa registered for a three-day motorcycle fundraiser to the Mid North Coast via Stroud/Dungog. It was, unfortunately (like so many other events) cancelled due to COVID. "I was so excited to go on this bike adventure. It will happen, and I'm absolutely going! I get a taste for something, and then I want more." At school, Melissa aspired to be a professional photographer, and in her 30s, it happened. As a photographer, reading National Geographic, she saw some photojournalism stories and craved to do an overseas assignment. "In 2014, I was asked to do the photos for a documentary on 3 Angels Nepal, an organisation that aims is to stop human trafficking in its country." Other dreams accomplished include going to Italy, holding a Got Your Back Sista event in Sydney, and attending a conference in New York. "Recently, I updated my bucket list and added: to produce a short film for an international not-for-profit; live in another country for six to 12 months and buy a beach house." Melissa believes in intention setting, especially writing it down. On New Year's Day 2008, she listed the countries she wanted to visit – including a desire to travel to a different destination every year. "It seemed like a pipe dream, though by writing it down, you do bring it into existence. I have now visited every country and travelled once or twice a year overseas – except for this year due to the borders closing." In the pipeline, she had a Tuscany Trek as a Got Your Back Sista fundraiser. However, it had to be postponed to September 2021. "I'm really looking forward to more overseas adventures. Once the borders are open, I will be on a plane. I have never been to New Zealand!" www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 51

Horo Scope Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars the next couple months.

DECEMBER STAR OF THE MONTH – DECEMBER SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER It’s essential for you to work independently and not in someone else’s shadow. Step out of the shade, Sagittarius – and into the spotlight. Nevertheless, you will require cooperation – so 2021 encourages collaboration. This year you learn to delegate and share responsibilities. Some colleagues may still challenge you, but most problems should be easily sorted. Remember, it’s a year for teamwork, so prepare to compromise. In matters of the heart, prepare for the unexpected. There’s likely to be something very different about the way you relate to newcomers. If already coupled, this experimental mood could be just what you need to forget life’s pressures. CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY With another year coming to an end, Capricorns choose to reflect. But rather than move forward, you may pour over past mistakes. Don’t be so hard on yourself. With hindsight, these “mistakes” were probably blessings in disguise. If you see this as a chance to lay old demons to rest, you can resolve grievances rather than let them fester. Then allow yourself a few weeks to just relax and have fun. Enjoy the festivities ahead. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY The secret to a happy month lies in tackling necessary duties early on. So clear the decks and then relax. Here’s your chance to let everyone know how much they mean to you. December’s end brings a time for raiding new year sales and pampering. If you’ve any cash leftover, why not consider a spa break or a quick holiday treat? For yourself and perhaps, a special partner. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH With most enjoying the silly season, there could be a noticeable lack of Pisceans in the conga line. Instead, you’re determined to claim a triumphant year’s end – but there’s a danger of overload. By all means, finish your tasks – but still, give festivities a look-in. Your reward? Singles are happily surprised, while couples opt for a change in scenery. A special sentimental tie may also be renewed. A fabulous end to a busy year. ARIES MARCH 21 – 20 APRIL Feisty Ariens leap into life as they do love - with verve and vivacity. You’re always ready to take on new challenges and relationships. Being naturally persuasive, you instinctively draw others to you. Your desire to lead means you rarely shy away from a battle, and you can’t bear weakness. Impossible to ignore, headstrong Aries is ready to try anything once. Happily, this next year brings out the best in you you’re ready to conquer, without fear. TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY Tidy your affairs early in the month, and you can look forward to a stress-free Christmas. It’s been a tough year, so allow more than a few days for rest. Life feels happier after the 24th, with your social life and sexuality soaring. And don’t worry too much about money. The planets stop siphoning Taurean wallets and do their pilfering elsewhere. The seasonal celebrations bring extra festivities, and perhaps some new romance. GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Endless problems have chipped away at many Gemini spirits. Not so now. Despite feeling tired, you should find this a better month. No longer the victim, you’ll be mounting sharper defences. Professionally, you’re better able to make the right choices. Should love or unexpected romance mount a sneak attack, relax – it’s all friendly fire. Looks like a fabulous festive season ahead. 52 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Everything needs a grand finale, including a year like 2020. It’s been a troubling time, but you’re now intent on a happier future. This determination sets off a chain reaction that can’t help but lead to success. There’s every chance that you’ll explore a new relationship – whether it’s romantic or platonic is up to you. Meanwhile, celebrate the season. This is your reward time, so enjoy a little financial flamboyance. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST The pursuit of happiness can be difficult. Still, it shouldn’t stop you from having fun. Whether you’re exploring romance or being flirtatious, this month Leos are ready to take wilder risks. Unfortunately, it’s not all play. By the new year, you’re jostled back into the workforce. Meanwhile, the festive season couldn’t be a better time to disconnect the autopilot and feel the thrill of free-fall. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER The tail end of 2020 leaves some clues as to what’s in store for the upcoming year, as early 2021 will continue to test your patience. No matter how fierce the provocation, stay in control. Of course, that’s easier said than done - but here’s when your new spirit will shine through. By early March, the cosmos suggests mixing business with pleasure, with many nudged towards money and prestige. Lovely. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Even though the pace slows to a crawl for some zodiac neighbours, your optimism remains irrepressible. Apart from the occasional moment of uncertainty, a delightful month awaits. On the whole, most Librans feel energetic and confident. Better still, both friendships and finances feature highly; and if you come across as being a tad overexuberant, you’ll be forgiven. It is the festive season, after all. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Home affairs take up much of your time in December. It’s an ideal time for sprucing up the home or family reunions - just in time for the festive season. Friends and family could also plan a surprise for you. Whatever the case, the planets put you in the mood for play. It’s also a heart-to-heart time. Talk problems through, and you’ll no longer be held captive by hidden feelings, or hostile finances.

JANUARY STAR OF THE MONTH – JANUARY CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY At some stage, everyone has to take a leap of faith, and Jupiter provides that opportunity – for now, and the year ahead. All your instincts say “jump” and, while the pressures of old habits and others’ expectations remain, you should still take the risk. If you can keep your head together through months of renovations, negotiations and frantic spurts of industry, you step into one of the most productive years of your life. Whatever happens, you're likely to get more of what you want. Make lasting investments, such as real estate. Some decide to extend a property or move to a distant location. Start working on your wish list now.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY During the next year, Jupiter brings you into the limelight. Think back 13 years, and you may find history repeating itself. Perhaps that, too, was a time of good fortune and new beginnings. The first change? A brand new self-image. It’s also a time for study and gaining new experience. Some benefit from a pay rise, promotion or bonus. Just stay sensible – sometimes it can be all too easy to fritter away good opportunities. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH As Jupiter moves through your sector of subconscious and psychic sensitivity over the next year, Pisceans learn even more about the spiritual dimensions of their lives. If you feel more spiritually protected – you are; and if you need to be taught or healed, a guardian or new mentor will be close by. The really lovely news? If and when you truly need help, it's likely to arrive – sometimes from the most unexpected sources. ARIES MARCH 21 – 20 APRIL Over the next year, Arien hopes and wishes come to the fore. Thanks to Jupiter, you’ll be busier and more involved with others. As Jupiter

loves to arrange meetings with people, unlike any we've met before – expect to be venturing outside your usual social circle. Friends are also more supportive. But this isn't a one-way street, as you're equally able to offer assistance. Either way, don't be shy of depending on well-placed connections. TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY This year Jupiter brings a time of increased work satisfaction, via a new job or better career or financial conditions. All in all, work is a happier place to be. Other possibilities: travel or higher education. Business and pleasure mix more easily. Health should also be on the up – with one exception: a possible gain in weight. If this is something you'd prefer to avoid, all things in moderation. GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Lost your way, just a little? Not to worry - Jupiter puts you back on track over the next year. This planet can also have a powerful maturing influence, a time of personal and spiritual growth - possibly through travel, new studies or teaching others. There may also be beneficial contact with those living overseas or with people from different backgrounds – so listen up when you hear an interesting accent. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Over the next year, Jupiter transits your sector of joint finances, intimate partnerships and other people’s money. For some, this transit can also indicate an inheritance or financial benefit. It's a time when Jupiter encourages you to try something new. Your mind is energised, and you’re busier with friends, projects and meetings. Don’t rule out passion either – kiss those loveless nights goodbye. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST Lucky Jupiter steps into your house of relationships and fun and stays for an entire year. Jupiter will take all of your favourite things, like love, parties, children and entertainment – and make them even better. Venus, too, has surprises up her sleeve. This sexy planet triggers the law of attraction your way. Money should come more easily. Just don’t take foolish risks. Clear credit cards, don’t add to them. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER This year Jupiter transits your sector of health and daily work. As such, others will receive this delightful planet’s benefits through you – and you, through them. Not surprisingly, this helps you win many new friends and admirers. Those you touch with your kindness will be more than happy to return the favour when you need it – particularly professional contacts. At last, work could become a happier place to be. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Generous Jupiter signals a spectacular time for love and sex over the next year, as well as extra cash. In the meantime, a tetchy Mars in your relationship sector can cause anger or confusion regarding a current partnership, especially if it’s new. If you’re hoping to keep a practical hold on this month’s events, think again. Have as much fun as you wish, but hold off on making any important decisions for a while. There’s no rush. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Jupiter becomes a favourite houseguest this year, bringing joy, new friendships and optimism – as well as unlimited potential. As we rarely get something for nothing, expect some hard work as well. Be prepared to ditch dead-end plans. This will ready you for the new challenges ahead. Travel, love and laughter also feature. Fortunately, money is not too much of a problem, so you can afford to play as hard as you work. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Thanks to Jupiter’s wanderlust, your curiosity expands this year – making it an ideal time to try as many new opportunities as possible. Few details will escape your attention. A growing pile of books, magazines and emails clutter your environment. Relationships with siblings and close family should also improve. Travel’s on the agenda, especially short trips related to work or family matters.
