For those keeping a close eye on Civic Park, you may have noticed a familiar structure being erected over the past couple of weeks of March. Yes – it’s the Spiegeltent – and it’s back in all of its glittery, glamourous gorgeousness with an extended season of The Party
Direct from Adelaide Fringe Festival, where it received rave reviews, The Party lifts the curtain on the secret world of social climbers, rich kids, gate crashers and hangers-on. Giving us an uncensored insight into the debaucherous goings-on of a highsociety soirée, it could be described as a risqué exploration of the laws of attraction, where nothing is off limits.
And it's not just the famous Spiegeltent that's about to be erected in Civic Park. The Tokyo-inspired Maho Magic Bar, which was a sell-out success last year, returns with its unique part bar, part magic show format. Read the full story on page 16.
Based on the Hollywood hit movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. This month Hunter Drama will bring this hilarious musical comedy to life on-stage for a limited season that is sure to deliver bucketloads of family fun this school holidays. Read more on page 20.
Unbelievably, School Holidays are back this month, and there is so much to do around the Hunter. Top of the list might just be the annual Mega Creatures bonanza at Hunter Valley Gardens. This year there are newly hatched baby creatures in the Storybook Garden and a wonderful photo opportunity where you can take photos of your little one hatching out of a giant dino egg. Read more on page 22, and check out our Easter School Holidays Guide on page 43.

Read more on page 36 and look out for our new Local Profile feature each month to meet more locals doing great things.

GRAND KYIV BALLET of UKRAINE
Forest Song & Don Quixote
From the trauma and heartbreak of war in their country to the major cities of the USA and Europe, and now to the stages of Australia, this is the Grand Kyiv Ballet of Ukraine.
The ballet will be touring Australia and New Zealand in 2023 with the double bill Forest Song and Don Quixote, stopping in Newcastle to perform at the Civic Theatre on 30 May. With two sensational performances, this magnificent evening of ballet is a not-to-be-missed experience.
Act One – The Ukrainian showpiece - Forest Song
This legendary ballet remains not only the pride of Ukraine but also of world choreography and cultural heritage for over 75 years, along with favourites such as Giselle and Swan Lake.
Forest Song is a magical love story, full of mysticism alongside the conflict between the human world and nature. It tells a tale of love between a fantastical forest creature Mavka and a man, Lukash. The story is of the fearless and brave Mavka, who longs for peace in her world, just
as Ukraine longs for peace in her country today. The ballet is filled with complex duets, fouettés and incredible choreographic pieces. This is the first time that Forest Song will be performed in Australia.
Act Two – Don Quixote
This flamboyant and festive Spanish ballet is a much-loved romantic comedy. It tells the story of a courageous but troubled man's quest for love. With gypsies, bullfighters, lavish costumes, breathtaking dancers and an inspiring music score, Don Quixote has been admired by both ballet connoisseurs and first-time audiences alike for over two centuries. The basis of this ballet is the love story of the flirtatious Kitrig and the poor barber Basil. They are prevented from being together by the bride's father, who plans to force his daughter to marry a more affluent groom. Don Quixote comes to assist the lovers, and the main characters receive their father's blessing.

Amongst his many competition successes are the Joan Carden Award, Opera and Arts Support Scholarship and the Ronald Dowd Memorial Prize.
Ashlee Woodgate partners Joshua as Mimi. Ashlee won a CONDA nomination for her performance of Violetta in Opera Hunter’s La Traviata last year and
is remembered for exceptional performances for Opera Hunter as Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro Her many roles include Nedda from Pagliacci, Pamina in The Magic Flute, and Fiordiligi in Cosi van Tutti. Ashlee made her New York debut at Carnegie Hall in 2018.

With a lavish stage set for the party of the century, this show lifts the curtain on the secret world of social climbers, rich kids, gate crashers and hangers-on. Giving us an uncensored
insight into the debaucherous goings-on of a high-society soirée, it could be described as a risqué exploration of the laws of attraction, where nothing is off limits. Audiences will need to secure tickets early to make sure they're on the invite list.
Conceived and directed by Scott Maidment, with comedy direction by Spencor Novich (American Horror Story, Blanc de Blanc) and choreography from LA's Kevin Maher (choreographer to Madonna, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber), anticipate a high-octane, provocative show full of surprises.
With overtones of the party scene from the film Babylon and very loosely inspired by the Peter Sellers film of the same name, The Party uses movie grabs and soundtracks that
the performer's lip sync to. Some audience members play the game of guessing which movie or song the grabs are lifted from. The result is an eclectic mix with music ranging from Europop to Opera, 50s dance classics and contemporary. It creates a lot of reference points for the audience, adds to the general mayhem and is lots of fun - like a debaucherous Hollywood party set on the Riviera. Director Scott Maidment says it's one wild ride that will really hit the spot with Newcastle audiences, who, according to Scott, have a bit of a reputation for knowing how to have a good time!
"When we were devising the production back in December last year, we commented on how much the Newcastle audiences were

going to love this one even more than usual," said Scott.
"I distinctly remember saying, 'Newcastle's gonna love this'! Our new show is not for the faint-hearted, it's pretty outrageous, and we know that Newcastle audiences love to party. But, more than ever, this show encourages the audiences to get up and join in the fun."
The love affair between Spiegeltent and Newcastle has been going on since 2013, with the famous tent making Newcastle its temporary home directly after its annual season at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, where it all began every year bar the COVID years.
"Newcastle has a great response to our shows, so every year as we bump out Adelaide, we tour straight to Newcastle, getting our ten
shipping containers on the road and heading north. In fact, tickets are already selling well, and we look forward to a great season."
And it's not just the famous Spiegeltent that's about to be erected in Civic Park, but the Tokyo-inspired Maho Magic Bar that was a sellout success last year as well. Maho Magic Bar was designed and created by Kirsten Siddle, Creative Director of Broad Encounters and Scott's real-life partner.
"When we bought the Maho Magic Bar to Newcastle last year, I was really nervous," said Kirsten.
"No one had heard of it, and it's such a different experience – part bar, part magic show, people weren't sure what to expect. It didn't take long for the word to get around, though and before we knew it, we were having to add shows to the schedule to keep up with demand."
"The artists and crew all look forward to getting to Newcastle to hit the beaches and enjoy the lifestyle. For Scott and I, it's like a second home. We're looking forward to revisiting our favourite bars and restaurants this year. And for a change, we are in the same place at the same time."
It seems the attraction is mutual, with several Novocastrian crew members keen to be contracted each year to help set up the vintage tent. The Spiegeltent itself hails from Belgium and is around 100 years old. Put together like a giant Meccano set; there are unbelievably no tools, no screws, no nails, no bolts and no
machinery required. Originally all the pieces could be lifted by one person. It takes less than a dozen people to erect the tent, and about eight crew members are locals who beg each year to be allowed to return.
"There is this wonderful sense of romantic achievement that people feel when they are a part of this traditional process," said Scott.
"It's a beautiful heritage piece that people love to work on. It does take a lot of maintenance, though. There is always something being worked on and repaired. In fact, at this very moment, we have a heritage carpenter from Newcastle working on it."
Once erected, the tent is an opulent space with stained glass, mirrors, warm timbers and red velvet that transports all who enter to a magical place reminiscent of old-world Europe. The audience is fully immersed in an experience that takes them out of their ordinary lives. This year, the set contains a huge twostorey house, open to the audience with ten doors and lots of windows. The party spills out of the house, around and above the spectators.
Seasoned international cast members include London West-End theatre royalty –Amanda Lindgren, who was an original cast member of Six West End and Danny Collins Wright, who's been working on a new Elton John musical also in London; New Yorker, Todd Degnan, who has toured and performed with Cirque US, Live 305 Entertainment and Sea World; and Jesse Harris from Montreal, who is the creator of the circus apparatus Trampo- ▶

"EXPECT GREAT MUSIC, EXTRAVAGANT CONSTUMES, AND AN ESCALATING ENERGY, UNLIKE ANYTHING YOU'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE IN THE SPIEGELTENT”
Mât and one of only two people in the world to do it.
Daquan "Day Dayyy" Barnes, one of the lead dancers in the show, hails from LA and has literally just come from performing at the Grammy Awards. He's also worked with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, Jlo, Will. I. Am, TLC, Kirk Franklin, Ciara, Ludacris and more. Kiwi foot juggler Emma Phillips is not only the first ever foot juggler to come out of New Zealand, but she is also one of the only Western artists to perform Chinese-style foot juggling in the world. She was trained by China's finest. One of the lead aerialists in the show, Angela Leigh McIlroy-Wagar, is a multifaceted performing artist who mingles mindbogglingly intricate circus aerial techniques with contortion, theatricality, and waacking, a disco dance style featuring dramatic poses and lightning-speed arm movements. She has worked with Cirque du Soleil, Les 7 Doigts de la Main, Circus Monti, Cirque Éloize and on television and film.
Scott warns audiences to "Expect great music, extravagant costumes, and an escalating energy within a theatre set, unlike anything you've ever seen before in the Spiegeltent. If you've ever been to a wilder party - you're under arrest!"
Set beside the Spiegeltent, visitors will also want to visit the glittering Maho Magic Bar, which offers fresh tricksters, fresh tricks and even fresher cocktails. Maho Magic Bar is the dazzling jewel of the Spiegeltent Newcastle program, jetting audiences straight to a neon-lit 'Tokyo' night with all the mischief, mayhem, cocktails and laughter you could wish for.
Inspired by Kirsten's travels to Japan, where the cacophony of sound, the glittering neon lights and the sensory overload that she experienced in the cities of Tokyo and Osaka took her out of her comfort zone, she wants to provide a similar immersive experience that dazzles and provides escapism.
"There's a contradiction in Japan that we tried to recreate – the dichotomy between the futuristic and contemporary neon exterior with the intimate, sophisticated tradition of the interior. In Japan, traditional Japanese magic, called tezuma, is still practised. Here we weave tezuma with western style magic. People are not sure what to expect. They enter the space and have no idea what's going on. Their every sense will be stimulated, and they just have to go with it. It's all part of the brilliance of the culture and the country that we've tried to encapsulate in this bubble of joy, full of comedy, delight and laughter."
The talented magicians and hosts for the show include Shirayuri, the pin-up boy
pioneer whose tricks come with a debonair storytelling twist and in Newcastle for the very first time; Master of ceremonies and sass, Sho Eba, delights with flamboyant charm and plenty of glitter; Sydney favourite Kaori Kitazawa will deliver brand new super kawaii illusions, promising to continue to tear up the rulebook in a profession traditionally ruled by men; and infamous daredevil, Sarito, returns with a whole new repertoire of unbelievable, high-octane tricks, featuring needles, gaffer tape and detergent. In 2022 the Japanese crew discovered New Zealand sensation Mika Harris and are now delighted to present Mika as their special guest magician. Mika is sharp, sassy
and the ultimate street swindler. Rounding out the troupe is master mixologist James Burgess, with flair bartending magic aplenty. Fuelled by a carefully curated bar menu of premium Japanese cocktails and spirits, Maho Magic Bar is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you have to do multiple times.
"For Spiegeltent Newcastle 2023, we have assembled the ultimate sleight-of-hand line-up, and I promise this will be Maho Magic Bar's craziest and most astonishing season yet. I couldn't be more thrilled to be able to present these tricksters in Newcastle. The only question is whether you will take your magic shaken or stirred!"

With a carefully curated bar menu of premium Japanese libations, you can choose from delicious and innovative cocktails, sake from three different regions and styles, find love with Japan's famed whisky and shochu or savour an umeshu and soda. And if you're feeling adventurous in spirit, round out your experience with a purchase from the 'Special Menu', with names like Spiky Love, Call Their Bluff and Ippan Knock Out – you won't be sure what to expect, except a fabulously memorable time!

HILARIOUSLY EXPLICIT BITING SATIRE LIFTS THE LID ON ONLINE CULTURE
WORDS SALLY THOMPSON
From the pen of leading Australian playwright and social commentator Van Badham comes, Banging Denmark, a modern rom-com about men who claim to understand the “female mind” and the online culture that inspires them. Via cracklingly funny dialogue, this phenomenal swinging satire deep dives into the seamy underside of the web.
Financially and emotionally ruined after a sexist harassment campaign, sleeping behind the office copy machine and existing on a bag of carrots while writing a thesis on computer games, feminist academic Ish Madigan is not exactly living her best life.
Guy DeWitt, meanwhile, is on top of his game: a notorious pickup artist whose seduction strategies have earned him a legion of male followers, stacks of cash and no-strings sex whenever he wants. The trouble is that Guy’s real name is Jake Newhouse, and Jake is falling apart with desire for Anne, an intelligent and independent Danish librarian he can’t game.
In desperation, Jake crosses enemy lines to seek help, offering Ish a life-changing sum of money to coach him in feminist-friendly flirtation. She is appalled – and sorely tempted. So, what’s stopping her? Just ethics, morals and every fibre of her being.
Into the mix throw Ish’s friend Denyse and the faithful Toby, wading patiently through the depths of Denyse’s friend zone, and you’ve got a giant tangle of bad decisions as these five characters navigate the treacherous waters of love, sex and dating in the 21st Century.
Director Allison Van Gaal (Trevor) has assembled a fabulously funny cast, including Megan Kennedy (Puffs), James Chapman (Things I Know to be True), Stephanie Hilkman (Chicago), Guilherme Norohna (Keeping Up Appearances) and Katie Blaxland (Jersey Boys).
Van Gaal said audiences were sure to find the tale compelling.
“Badham has written a deeply relevant romantic comedy that examines the dark underbelly of internet dating culture and online pickup artistry,” said Van Gaal.
“Her writing sizzles with wit and humour but leaves us with genuinely touching moments.”
Following an acclaimed season at Sydney Theatre Company, The Very Popular Theatre Company proudly presents this culturally relevant dark comedy about sex, the internet and social democracy.
Banging Denmark opens at The Playhouse in Newcastle on 28 April. Book through Civic Theatre Ticket Office at www. civictheatrenewcastle.com.au or phone 4929 1977.

WALKING WITH DINOSAURS AT HUNTER VALLEY GARDENS!
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
The Hunter Valley Gardens are located in an ancient landscape that once erupted with the fiery lava flows of volcanoes, still evident in the rich red soils that provide the local wine industry with perfect growing conditions today. So it’s apt that once a year, the giants that once roamed the earth return in the annual April School Holiday Mega Creatures display to the delight of junior palaeontologists and their families everywhere. Now in its eighth year, the event is open from Saturday, 1 April until Sunday, 30 April and is the perfect day (or night) out.
At this year’s event, you’ll discover rides for all ages, Easter Egg hunts, interactive fossil digs and giant animatronic animals for the whole family to enjoy. With over 14 hectares of immaculate gardens, manicured lawns, 6000 trees, 600,000 shrubs, and over 1 million ground cover plants, plus waterfalls, statues, murals, and much more, Hunter Valley Gardens has planned the perfect activities to get your family outdoors and enjoying the fresh air these holidays.
Each year the team behind this family favourite event create new displays and experiences so that no two years are ever the same. They work all year round to ensure that the best ideas come to fruition, designing many of the displays themselves with state-of-theart animatronics and speciality lighting and sourcing them internationally. The gardens are divided into 11 zones with different creatures to discover as you wander through the beautiful landscape.
This year there are newly hatched baby creatures in the Storybook Garden and a wonderful photo opportunity where you can take photos of your little one hatching out of a giant dino egg. Discover a kaleidoscope of colour in the Butterfly Garden with giant butterflies (some with a four-metre wingspan), bugs, six-metre tall flowers, and insects such as 2-metre bees and 4-metre dragonflies. There are frosty creatures such as Woolly Mammoths and Sabre-Toothed Tigers in the

Pre-historic creatures come to life in the Walk with the Dinosaurs Border Garden and Dino Land with new dinosaurs this year, including a Triceratops skull, a Chasmosaurus, a Styracosaurus, a Parasaurolophus and an extra Ankylosaurus and old favourites, T-Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Everyone’s favourite dinosaur, the T-Rex, will be roaming around looking for his next feed and posing for the odd photo opportunity. Don’t miss the very popular Boneyard, where junior archaeologists get to dig deep and discover mythical creature facts, figures and hidden fossils.
As the sun sets at Hunter Valley Gardens, and in a first for this year, there will be a new night-time tour – the Mega Creatures Night Safari, led by the Pretty Amazing Jono as the Dino Keeper wearing a safari suit and carrying a walkie talkie. Keep an eye out for stomping dinosaurs that wander through the Gardens as you encounter life-sized mega creatures in the dark, and hear the roars and the mysterious rustlings as you creep through the grounds. It’s an experience the kids will be sure to remember. Step back in time and explore Dino Land inhabited by prehistoric giants, including Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus,
Triceratops and lots more. Let your imagination take flight as the specialty lighting makes all the pre-historic and mythical creatures come alive at night in a way that will be equal parts enchanting and scary (in a fun way).
If you’re hungry from all that exploring, a wide range of delicious food options are available. And, of course, once you’ve finished exploring and eating, grab a ride token and head over to the famous Hunter Valley Gardens’ rides. Soak up the vintage atmosphere of the Italian-built traditional Venetian Carousel, fly 11 metres above the ground and get your thrills on with the Swing Chair, have some twist and twirl fun in the Tea Cup or speed down the 35-metre Superslide that stands 12 metres high – guaranteed to keep even your teenagers happy. The 25-metre-tall Giant Ferris Wheel offers spectacular, panoramic views of the Gardens, surrounding mountains and wineries and will be your only chance to see the dinosaurs and other mega creatures from above – a firm favourite for all family members because you can sit back, take a breath, relax and enjoy the view.

AN EXPLORATION OF HUMAN FOLLY AND GREED
The Government Inspector is a hilarious play about local government in a provincial town. A mayor and his cronies mistake a traveller for an inspector who has come to investigate them. Fearing exile to Siberia, they lavish him with bribes and fawning attention, which the man, a penniless opportunist, happily accepts. Mayhem ensues!
Ukrainian playwright Nikolai Gogol has created characters as
excellent opportunity for Karuah to have its moment in the limelight.
It’s the first event of its kind for Karuah and fulfils some of the actions outlined in the Council’s newly adopted Karuah Place Plan, such as advocating for local events and showcasing Karuah’s cultural heritage.
The artistic concept behind Karuah by Night was inspired by the town’s rich indigenous history and stunning natural environment.
familiar today as in 1836 when the play was first published. His exploration of human folly, greed and pretension is timeless – and very funny!
This production is dedicated to late NTC stalwart Noel Grivas, whose mother, June Goss, provided this modern translation – it’s the first-ever presentation on stage.
Directed by Adelle Richards with the assistance of John McFadden, the large cast includes Rory Pollock, Brian Randall, Leanne Guihot-Balcombe and Jamie Lewis.
Performances are at 8pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2pm on Sunday, 14 May and Saturday, 20 May

“We’re proud to have collaborated with the local community to curate an impactful collection of light and sensory elements that will give visitors an immersive and culturally rich experience,” said Mayor Ryan Palmer.
“It will be a fantastic opportunity for people to learn more about Karuah’s historical and cultural significance within Port Stephens.”
Neon installations of marine life will come to life in a kaleidoscope of colour along the foreshore, and the evening will culminate with a spectacular light show over the water, incorporating laser lights, smoke and special effects.
"Karuah by Night will also be a great drawcard for visitors, and we’re hoping to see people from across Port Stephens and beyond come along and enjoy experiencing Karuah in a different light."
“We encourage visitors to consider booking a local stay to make the most of everything this scenic riverside village offers across an entire weekend.”
Karuah by Night is a free, family-friendly event made possible by NSW Government funding.

The Newcastle Northstars welcome back 2022 Australian Ice Hockey League Coach of the Year, Kevin Noble, as the Head Coach for the 2023 season.
"It's excellent to be back on the team and have another chance to return to the finals.
There's a lot of unfinished business within the group, and we are really keen and hungry to get back to the finals this year.", Kevin said.
"As a coach [we're looking at] the development of the players individually, both on and off the ice. The range of experience across our team allowed us to create so much
depth, and the mentoring from our seasoned, experienced players to our younger group allowed their game to mature a lot last season, helping lead them to become a bigger part of the team."
2023 will see the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) expand to 10 teams, with great excitement for the return of Adelaide and Perth to the competition and welcoming both the Brisbane and Central Coast teams into the fold.
The importance of adding these teams isn't lost on the Northstars Head Coach, and he expects greater reach of ice hockey across Australia as a result.
"There has been exceptional growth with increasing to 10 teams, and it's exciting to see the sport gain more national notoriety. There are only good things that can come from the growth, and it's excellent to see the progress that is happening."
"Growth like this also brings international attention, making our league a bigger draw for international imports, and in turn helps our local talent grow and develop."
The Newcastle Northstars will start their 2023 home games with a pre-season game against the Central Coast Rhinos at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday, 2 April, at 4pm. Tickets are available online now at www. northstars.thundertix.com.

It's time to say "YES!" to the joyfilled, romantic musical which has Australian audiences buzzing.
The award-winning team from Hunter Drama is weaving its magic again during these school holidays when it brings to life the delightful tale of The Wedding Singer.
Based on the Hollywood hit movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore comes this hilarious musical comedy celebrating all the fun of the '80s.
The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.
Following sold-out performances on Broadway and across the UK, The Wedding Singer features your favourite characters and a sparkling new soundtrack, which does for the 80s what Hairspray did for the 60s.
It's 1985, and rock star wannabe, Robbie Hart, is New Jersey's most in-demand wedding singer. He's the life of the party until his own fiancée leaves him standing at the altar. Bitter and broken, Robbie's grief turns him into the
worst wedding singer imaginable. He makes every wedding as disastrous as his own until Julia, a warm-hearted waitress, intervenes. Julia dreams of her own perfect wedding, but the trouble is she's about to be married to a rich, shallow Wall Street shark. Can Robbie pull off the gig of his life and win the heart of the girl of his dreams?
Hunter Drama has assembled a stellar cast of 24 young 'triple threats', ranging in age from 14 to 23, to bring this romantic comedy to life on the Playhouse stage in Newcastle. Childhood Sweethearts Delivering Authentic
Italian Cuisine
For a genuine taste of Italy, and in particular, Rome and Calabria, Novocastrians need go no further than Beaumont Street Islington to Sapori at Tailors. Opened by Romans Fabrizio and Francesca Virgili in January 2021, it is now a firm favourite for locals and anyone looking for the authentic traditions of Italian fare.
Sapori means ‘flavours’ in Italian, and that’s what this rustic restaurant is all about - flavours and traditional cooking that is true to the origins of the recipes handed down through the family. Francesca’s father, Rocco, has been making pizza since he was 12. At the age of 22, he opened his own restaurant with his wife by his
side. Many of the recipes used in Sapori have been inherited by Fabrizio and Francesca from Rocco.
The couple were childhood sweethearts who went to school together. Fabrizio would spend lots of time at Francesca’s house, where Rocco taught the young boy everything he knew in the woodfired oven in his home. Unsurprisingly, Francesca and Fabrizio both began their careers working in hospitality and restaurants until one fateful day; they decided to take a holiday to Australia.
They spent 40 days travelling around the country and returned home to Rome in the middle of winter. They decided to return to Australia for one year to learn how to speak English, and they continued to work in hospitality. After the year was up, the COVID pandemic closed the borders, and the couple found themselves in Australia for a longer period than they had expected and still learning English.
With Fabrizio’s great uncle living in Newcastle, the couple were drawn to the city so that they could enjoy having family close. A family friend, Robert ‘Bobby’ Naumov, provided the couple with the opportunity to take over the space where his own family had run businesses over generations. Previously known as The Tailor’s Workshop, it was sitting empty, and the

young Romans took it on with great energy and a strong desire to bring traditional Italian fare to Newcastle.
You will not find pizza with BBQ sauce, pineapple or chicken schnitzel on it here, and it’s best not to ask for it.
“We keep to the traditions,” says Francesca. “We really care about that. Every recipe has a story behind it. Carbonara, for example, was a dish made for coal miners – that’s what it
means. The pepper in the dish is meant to look like coal dust. And it is not made with cream. We make everything from scratch with the best produce. We import a lot of ingredients from Italy because if we want authentic flavours, we have to. The Italian speck is much less fatty than Australian speck; the salami is spicier or more flavourful. It is all about the flavours.”
Pizzas are made in the Roman style, which is a thinner crust with ingredients right to the
edge of the pizza. They offer Le Rosse (tomato base) and Le Bianche (mozzarella base). A customer favourite is a pizza they named after Francesca’s father, Rocco, who invented it. It uses Calabrian flavours because that’s where his family hailed from – spicy Calabrian salami, nduja olives, fried onions, mozzarella, basil and chilli oil. The vegetables used on the pizzas are all pre-prepared with additional flavours. Pasta is handmade every day, as is the tiramisu and connolo. The desserts change regularly, and Francesca makes the gelato at home without an expensive gelato-making machine. She regularly makes pistachio, Nutella, hazelnut and zabaglione, much to the delight of returning customers.
And just as Francesca’s mother worked in Rocco’s restaurant when she was expecting Francesca, history has come full circle, and Francesca has done the same. Now spending most of her time at home with the couple’s young one-year-old daughter, she helps out when she can and often takes her little one into the restaurant in her pouch.

Best Cheats of 2023 (Part 2) Dental Home Care
The three critical elements to good dental health are diet, home care and the quality of your dental care - in that order of importance. A good diet (see best cheats of 2023 – March edition of inouch) can significantly overcome a lack of home care. Likewise, the combination of good diet and home care can significantly overcome some lack in the quality of your dental care. At Belledental, we encourage good diet, simple and effective home care and back this up with quality, conservative dental care: this is how we get the results we do. What does simple and effective home care look like?
It involves cleaning between your teeth with either interdental brushes or floss (or both) followed by thorough, gentle teeth brushing with an extra soft toothbrush. This program needs to be done once a day thoroughly. If you’re cleaning your teeth twice a day, the other time can just be a thorough brushing.
The starting point for this is a thorough professional cleaning of your teeth and an
examination. I know many patients that tell me they just had a “free” cleaning and examination at various large clinics.
A 10-minute cursory “free” clean, without x-rays and without demonstration of home care routines tailored to you, will be totally inadequate as a dental clean– especially if you want to set yourself up for long-term success.
Don’t kid yourself.
If your dental cleans are thorough and you implement the demonstrated home care, you are likely to get bleeding. Bleeding gums are the clinical indicator of active dental disease, but if you follow the above routine for 2-3 weeks, the bleeding will stop.
Congratulations: You’ve achieved healthy gums!
If you are thorough with your flossing/ interproximal brushing three days a week, followed by tooth brushing, many patients can maintain a good level of gum health (still maintain brushing every day).
If you get bleeding, revert back to the daily routine until the bleeding stops - then, you can start to cheat again. If you’ve got more advanced gum disease, I would not recommend this cheat – but it will work for many – check with your dentist or make an appointment at Belledental on 4946 9122.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth
Belledental CRC’s
(Composite Resin Crowns)
CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
Direct Resin Veneers
(Zero cutting of tooth)
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses –they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have su ered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day!
What if you have su ered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.

Embracing a Lifelong Passion for Photography
With almost 50 years of experience as a photographer and a life filled with travel and adventure, Andrew Monger is an interesting character who considers himself a visual historian. He has operated his successful photography business, AJM Photography, in Newcastle for over 30 years. And now, celebrating his longevity as a sought-after photographer in the region, he has published his first coffee table and souvenir book, Newcastle and Beyond – A Pictorial Guide to Newcastle and Surrounds, with publisher Paul Newey Sr.
Born in Camden, New South Wales, Andrew's family moved to the Whitebridge area of Newcastle when he was just a baby. He grew up in the area until the age of 14, playing on the Fernleigh Track and around the mines when his mining engineer father took a job in Melbourne
and then, two years later, moved again, this time to Brisbane. Young Andrew was not into sports or the military, so his mother encouraged him to join a club, which is how he discovered an interest in, and a talent for, photography. Even while still in high school, Andrew began his first photography business. His fellow students hated drawing specimens in biology, so he had a thriving business photographing the specimens for his friends and photographing sports carnivals and school events. After school, he took a job in Coles as a Planning Manager, but when he missed the bus one day, he dropped into a local photography business and landed a job there, learning commercial photography and processing in the dark room over the next two years.
When Andrew turned 20, his father moved the family back to Newcastle, and Andrew
decided to come with them. He spent the years from 1975 to 1980 working for Hannan Photography, specialising in commercial industrial photography.
"I loved the heavy mining machinery, the challenges of photography underground in the mines, aerial photography – it was as if my Dad's mining engineering work had somehow rubbed off on me," said Andrew.
"Newcastle was a thriving heavy industry environment at that time. We had one of only two flameproof flash units in Newcastle, and Paul Hannan didn't like going underground. I always got that job, and I did it enthusiastically. You had to have a special flameproof flash so that it didn't ignite gases underground. It was all fascinating. It wasn't all mining and construction, though. We also did fashion shoots for David Jones!"
In 1980 at the age of 25, he decided to take a six-month holiday and, like so many young Australians, took off for London. His six-month holiday turned into ten years, and while he was away, he worked as a sheep farmer in Kent, a waiter in remote parts of Scotland and a window fixer in the city of London. He did up a van and took to the roads to tour Europe. He lived and worked in Switzerland for three years, mainly in the city of Zermatt, which is a mountain resort renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking and is located just beneath the Matterhorn peak.
"There were lots of Aussies there at the time," Andrew remembers. "I worked lots of different jobs – I was a 'dishologist', a 'buffet executive' and even an assistant chef. I had to ski to and from work, even carting boxes of apples for the apple strudel the restaurant was famous for. It was there that I met a guy on a chair lift who was a photographer, taking photos of tourists on the ski slopes. He and his business partner ran a photography business out of Vermont in the USA. Before I knew it, I had a permit for the US as a 'specialised alien' and was working for them in Vermont as a photographer."
The next stage of Andrew's life was filled with action photography in glamorous locations. He photographed white water rafting or skiing at a number of resorts around the US, including the Coloma River in California, Purgatory, located in the rugged San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado, Beech Mountain Resort in North Carolina and the famous Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii, where the Jurassic Park movies were filmed. It was living trapped on an island that finally nudged Andrew toward home.
In August 1992, Andrew returned home to Newcastle and opened AJM Photography. He bought a block of land in Adamstown that backed onto the railway track, which, as we all

know, eventually became the cycleway known as the Fernleigh Track. He used sleepers from the tracks to build retaining walls, and even now, they provide a rustic backdrop for his studio clients and their portraits. By 1997 the house and studio were built, and he remains there to this day with no plans to move.
"I won't be retiring," said Andrew. "I love my life. I enjoy the convenience of working from home. I have a green key for the studio and a red key for the house. Green means go to work. Red means time to stop work!"
With such a complete and blessed life, Andrew's bucket list contained one item that he hadn't ticked off, and that was to publish a book. Having taken photographs across the region for such a long time, he is passionate about how much Newcastle has to offer the world. It was the late Meg Purcer, who had worked with Andrew on many projects, who introduced him to Paul Newey. Paul became Andrew's coauthor and publisher of the book Newcastle and Beyond – A Pictorial Guide to Newcastle and Surrounds.
"I'm really proud of the book," said Andrew. "I believe that it makes a great souvenir for visitors to the region, perfect for our international students to send home to their families to share images of where they live. Newsagents were clamouring for such a book. These are photographs of the real Newcastle, the places that are unique to us, and I'm thrilled with it."
With such a long career, Andrew has had to navigate his path through the many technological changes in his profession and admits that moving from film to digital was difficult at first.
"I had no choice but to embrace it. The difference now, though, is that I still have all the core photography skills that I needed when we worked with film. So many of the photographers today don't have that experience or skill set, and I think it makes a real difference."
It's not just technical skill, however, that makes Andrew so good at his job. It's his people skills, his natural curiosity and his passion for documenting the history of people and places. He has a knack for getting the best out of people, making them feel relaxed and confident and is not shy about organising the details of his shoots. He once straightened the tie of then Prime Minister John Howard!
"One of my favourite jobs is actually doing wedding photography. When you photograph a wedding, you are documenting one of the most important days of someone's life. They will be busy all day, so it's my job to make sure they don't miss any of the little details. I make sure that I photograph every single guest. If they are in attendance, they have been deemed as
an important part of the lives of the bride and groom. I do the same thing at funerals for a similar reason. People who are mourning won't notice all the guests or the little moments that are quite special. I show up like someone's Uncle Benny and make it happen!"
"I have been taking an annual photo for one client's family every year for 18 years. The girls have grown up, and I've photographed through pregnancies and every important moment. It is something very precious to be able to see them grow and change year after year."
This role of recording history for others is leading Andrew into a new project with the working title of "Photomonger". With some technical assistance, he is digitising his entire catalogue of photographs from his earliest days to the most recent. They include lots of aerial shots that show the progression of the region over time and the change from heavy industry
in the city. He hopes to create a resource for the university or local libraries and those interested in local history.
Andrew credits the fact that he learns something new every day with his continued passion for photography. In his own opinion, he is not the best photographer and freely admits that there are others who are more skilled than he, but he does believe that his ability to work with others and to make people feel comfortable is what sets him apart. That, and his extraordinary career and experience are what make him one of the city's best photographers.
Andrew's book, Newcastle and Beyond – A Pictorial Guide to Newcastle and Surrounds, is available to purchase for $34.99 from www.ajmphoto.com.au, local newsagents or direct from the publisher on www. neweyprintingcompany.com.au

REDUCING THE IMPACT OF BEREAVEMENT ON KIDS
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Grief has a profound effect on anyone of any age, but if you are a child or young person, it can impact your life in ways that have a longterm detrimental effect. In Australia, 1 in every 20 Aussie children will experience the death of a parent before they turn 18 years old. To put this into perspective, there is most likely a child grieving the loss of a parent in every classroom in every Australian school. Research shows that childhood bereavement causes disruptions
in relational, academic, and occupational functioning later in life and is associated with a greater risk of maladaptive coping, mental health disorders, substance abuse, suicide, and early mortality.
Feel the Magic is an Australian charity that provides grief education and support for children experiencing the loss of a parent or sibling. Their aim is to create a world where grieving kids and their families feel supported and empowered and can begin to move
forward with their lives. The organisation runs evidence-informed programs that have been developed by a clinical psychologist and are delivered by trained professionals.
Feel the Magic run a series of camps and programs for bereaved children that aims to reduce the associated mental health impacts of childhood bereavement by teaching practical tools to manage grief, increasing confidence in managing their emotions, connecting to a community with shared language around grief

and helping them to understand grief.
In support of their work and to raise money for the cause, Creighton’s Funeral Services is the proud sponsor of The Vintage Charity Golf Day, taking place on Thursday, 11 May, from 8.30am (tee-off at 9am). The day includes 18 holes of golf at the Greg Norman designed The Vintage Golf Club, barista coffee pregolf, a breakfast snack, gourmet lunch, on-course fun with hole activations and, of course, the joy of knowing that you are supporting a wonderful cause. Sponsorship packages are still available, and it’s not too late to enter a team. Packages and team entry can be purchased through www.thevintage-charity-golf-day-2023. raisely.com
Funds raised through the golf day will be used to help pay for a local Hunter camp for bereaved children in the region.
“We run camps with 50 to 60 children at each camp,” said Sean
Preece, Event Organiser at Feel the Magic.
“It costs us about $1500 per child, and we cover the full cost. Every cent raised goes directly into supporting a bereaved child and enabling them to attend Camp Magic. We run 4 to 6 camps per year in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and the Hunter with hopes to expand out to South Australia and Queensland.”
“I know from personal experience what a profound impact our camps have on children. My own two children attended Camp Magic, and it changed their lives. When kids get there, they are often introverted, depressed and anxious. Camp teaches them that they are not alone in feeling the way they do, that it’s ok to feel happy and sad and to get on with your life.”
If you or someone you know would benefit from attending Camp Magic, details are available at www.feelthemagic.org.au.

CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY CELEBRATES HARMONY IN LAKE MAC
Almost 100 new Aussies have flown the flag for cultural diversity at a citizenship ceremony in Lake Macquarie to coincide with Harmony Week. A total of 98 people from 28 countries took the Citizenship Pledge at Rathmines Theatre on Friday morning, with friends and family watching on.
People from all walks of life and all corners of the globe were among the participants, with many dressed in their home nation's traditional outfits for the ceremony.
From Iran to Ireland and from New Zealand to Nepal, each had a different story to tell about how they ended up Down Under, but they all shared one thing in common: they're happy to call Australia home.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser, who presided over the ceremony, welcomed the new citizens.
"Harmony Week is all about celebrating diversity in Australia, and what better way than to embrace new citizens and the culture, history and traditions they bring with them," said Mayor Fraser.
"I love hearing the stories of how people ended up here in beautiful Lake Macquarie and appreciate the fact they have chosen this as their place to settle."
BUDGET TO DELIVER RECORD INFRASTRUCTURE BOOST ALONGSIDE SECOND CONSECUTIVE SURPLUS
More than $137 million has been earmarked for investment into local facilities and infrastructure projects in Newcastle as part of a record Budget balancing community needs with a $6.9 million surplus.
City of Newcastle has placed its 2023-24 Budget on public exhibition for community feedback. It includes Council's largest annual capital works program to date, with almost 270 projects planned across the city during the next financial year.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said a key focus of this Budget is maintaining ongoing financial sustainability alongside the delivery of a high level of essential community services.
"Our list of projects extends across the city, with increased investments in community infrastructure, facilities and services that will help renew and reinvigorate Newcastle as we continue to build an inclusive, liveable, and sustainable city," Cr Nelmes said.
"Infrastructure renewal is a priority to deliver everyday benefits to all Novocastrians, with $26.5 million to be invested in roads, bridges, footpaths and community buildings, including
$7.5 million for our citywide road resurfacing program.
"Almost $20 million will be spent delivering new and improved parks, playgrounds, sporting and aquatic facilities, which provide important opportunities for the community to engage in active and healthy lifestyles.
"This includes $5 million towards the first stage of the landmark all-abilities playground and water park at Foreshore Park and construction of the reimagined playground and amenities upgrade at Hamilton's much-loved Gregson Park, as well as $7.5 million to improve inland pools and ocean baths across the city, including the continued revitalisation of the Newcastle Ocean Baths and delivery of the Lambton Park Swimming Centre grandstand upgrade in time for the new swim season.
City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath said prudent financial management would deliver a second consecutive surplus budget without compromising our capacity to maintain services and meet community commitments.
AUSTRALIAN MILITARY STORIES TOLD THROUGH TATTOOS
Stories of service life and sacrifice inked on the skin of current and former Australian military personnel have been made into a powerful photographic exhibition now on display at Newcastle Museum.
Curated by the Australian War Memorial, Ink in the Lines features the stories and tattoos of 22 veterans from across Australia. The 76 photographic portraits are the result of an Australian War Memorial photographic commission conducted in 2018.
Audio interviews played on screens within the exhibition help capture the raw emotion of each participant as they explain why they chose to commemorate and honour their service, or the service of loved ones, through the medium of tattooing.
Australian War Memorial senior curator Stephanie Boyle says she is thrilled to bring the touring exhibition to Newcastle and hopes it resonates with local audiences and with the region's strong military heritage.
"Behind every tattoo is a story. Ink in the Lines does what no other exhibition in Australia has done – it shares stories of Australia's military veterans through their tattoos," Ms Boyle said.
Ink in the Lines is on exhibition until Sunday, 4 June 2023. Newcastle Museum opens from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday through Sunday and seven days during the school holidays. Visit www.newcastlemuseum.com.au/exhibitions/ special-exhibitions/ink-in-the-lines for more information.

Maitland City Council Calls On Community
Maitland City Council is calling for ideas from the community and proposals from interested parties to help guide the future of its former Administration Building at 285 High Street.
With more than 1,500 square metres of floor space across three floors, there is ample opportunity for several different types of potential reuse to help Council activate the east end of Central Maitland.
Built in the early 1980s, the site is ideally placed at the east end of Maitland’s High Street,
close to local transport links, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Town Hall, and the Regional Sports Complex.
The building now lies dormant following the Council’s move into the new Maitland Administration Centre at the other end of the block and presents an attractive opportunity for reactivation.
General Manager David Evans said Council recognises the range of potential benefits to the community and wants suggestions on future use before determining the next steps.
“There are two main goals of this process: to help Council better understand what the community wants to see here and understand what level of community and commercial interest there is in adaptive reuse of the site,” Mr Evans said.
“We know some community members have strong views about what we could do with the former Administration Building, and this is their chance to let us know what they think is perfect for this site.
“Whether it’s a community group reactivating the site, a commercial endeavour, accommodation, hospitality, or anything in between, we’re keen to consider all options to make sure we get the best outcome for the Maitland community and the precinct.’
At the end of the expression of interest process, Council officers will prepare a report for the elected Council to decide the next steps in the reuse process, anticipated to be around mid-2023.
To look inside the former Administration Building, have your say as a community member or offer up a high-level proposal for reusing the site, head to www.maitland.nsw. gov.au/projects/adaptive-reuse-of-theformer-maitland-administration-building and follow the prompts.

April Horoscopes
ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA
ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH
STAR OF THE MONTH
ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
This is a year to gather resources: it’s a time for disciplined work. Though May and June may feel sluggish, your unique talents come to the fore by July. Thinking processes fall into a more logical pattern, and projects finally get the full attention they deserve. Through August, allow yourself to be guided by older or more experienced individuals. Romance also makes its mark this year. You may fall head over heels or come to a confronting watershed. As you reach this crossroad, you could be undecided over which path to take. Maybe you’re worried about your choice of travelling companion. Either way, by September, most Aries’ hearts beat with a new intensity.
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY
There’s no denying that it’s wonderful to feel totally in sync with life. Now you can go one better. Imagine the possibilities that arise when you meet someone on precisely the same wavelength. At work, too, radical changes are likely. Perhaps you should ditch anything that’s unproductive or outmoded. Slogging towards goals can be tiresome at times, but you’re a hard worker. Something’s bound to pay off.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE
Some months seem to wave the insanities of the universe in your face, and April looks happy to heckle. You will have to accept that not everybody can keep up with your pacesome may even disagree with your thoughts and ideals. But you can’t just ignore this: Saturn calls for cooperation and insists that you act responsibly. The key is to match ambition with compassion.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
You’re probably still pinching yourself, unsure if what just happened was a dream. The truth is, your ambition and hard work should finally find their audience this month - so take advantage of any good press. Still, good fortune or fame is usually fleeting. Make sure you record all praise
so that, in the future, you can hold others to their word. If they want what you have so badly, get it in writing.
LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST
The planets tinker with your dream states, and, as a result, your intuition heightens - as do any latent clairvoyant abilities. Should your inner voice whisper sound advice, stop and listen. Those feeling a tad sexier than usual can look forward to a romantic fling. Watch your expectations, though, as this isn’t a rock-solid phase. For happy couples, love grows more passionate and perhaps more experimental.
VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER
April finds you taking a chisel to long-held beliefs that no longer serve a purpose. Your attention now shifts away from the inner world and towards the outer. Should emotional issues chip away at your relationships, new ground rules will need to be applied. Unfortunately, this may mean that some ties are broken. Whatever happens, you feel more empowered by the decisions you make. After all, they’ll be your own.
LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER
April threatens to send finances into a spin. Remember, while grand plans give you something to aspire to, they can also break the bank. Fortunately, your more sensible side should step in before spending gets too out of hand. In addition, a friend or relative may want your help. If they’re being too intrusive, set them straight. Sometimes, even loved ones have to learn from their own mistakes.
SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER
Scorpios could enjoy a month of passion, but it may require a change in attitude. You do have a strong and sometimes overpowering character. If the whip is wielded by mutual consent, all well and good. But abuse of personal power can alienate loved ones. Their likely response? To tell you to let up or get out. Perhaps, though, it’s freedom that you want. Soon after the 20th, an important work goal comes within reach.
SAGITTARIUS
22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER
April sees a changing of the guard. Round up your talents and get ready for greater career commitments. If you feel unqualified for what’s offered to you, don’t worry - you’re more than capable of handling whatever comes your
way. It’s also a month to stay well clear of the pathologically discontented. Don’t fall victim to the clutter of others’ troubled minds. But it’s not all work. Later in April, the cosmos launches in with a romantic pick-me-up.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY
Health is always important to you, but when you feel unwell, you can sometimes imagine yourself worse off than you actually are. Ironically, excessive worry and overwork could end up causing the ill health you dread. Take more than the occasional break this month, or nerves really could be worn to a frazzle. Happier news: after the 20th, romantic encounters could find many Capricorns draped in little more than a bathrobe.
AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY
April looks set to provide a different journey from the one you’ve meticulously mapped out. Realise from the outset that each detour is negotiable and that the trick lies in knowing there is no fast track. This month, patience is your biggest strength. Even so, it wouldn’t hurt to throw some ideas around with other like minds. With regard to romance, most Aquarians can take delight in most of what the cosmos has to offer.
PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH
With today’s hectic pace, we all tend to neglect our well-being more than we should. And we all have our various little addictions. Pisceans are prone to worrying about others and have a habit of putting their needs first. If you must obsess about anyone’s health this month, make it your own. Finances also figure big-time in April, with the emphasis being on damage control. Suddenly, everything has an overpriced fee attached to it.

Creating Your Perfect Match with Clarendon Homes
When creating a home that's just right for you and your family, there's a lot to think about. How will the spaces adapt as the kids grow? What about working from home? How much time will you spend entertaining, indoors and out? What look and feel will the interiors have, and how can you put your own stamp on it all?
At Clarendon Homes we recognise that every family is different, which is why we offer more than 70 home designs to suit a wide range of budgets, tastes and lot sizes. But we've also ensured our most popular designs
IS AIRBNB
can be personalised to further suit your needs. Perhaps you'd like to change the floorplan, adding or adjusting bedrooms or ensuites, expanding alfresco areas or maximising storage space? Clarendon's suite of options makes it all possible.
If you thought you couldn't afford a Clarendon Home, then think again! The Aspire range is made up of affordable, carefully considered designs with the flexibility to add features such as a butler's pantry or a home theatre to your floorplan.
For those who want to put more of a personal stamp on their home or who need
living space for teens or in-laws, the Sapphire range offers even more flexibility. Popular additional options include larger bedrooms and garages, extra walk-in robes, feature windows or storage, and extra or relocated ensuites.
The luxury Bowral 44 and the stunning Hamilton 27 designs, both featured at our Lochinvar Display Centre, offer no less than 11 floorplan options each. In the Hamilton 27, why not add a fabulous Grand Alfresco, tailormade for our great Australian lifestyles? In the country-style Bowral 44, see how our floorplan has been optimised to support a busy, growing family with the inclusion of a butler's pantry, children's activity room, home theatre, home office and multi-purpose attic.
After you've settled on your layout, the fun continues in our Lifestyle Studio, where our experts will help you select finishes, fixtures and fittings for your Sapphire or Aspire home. There's a wide array of options for everything from colour palettes to flooring, kitchen essentials, tiling, lighting, window dressings, taps and much, much more.
Visit our Lochinvar Display Centre to see how our selection of pre-planned options will transform your new home into your forever home. We're open 7 days, 10 am to 5pm, at 7 Tillage Drive, Lochinvar, NSW 2321. Call 02 8851 5440 or visit www.clarendon.com.au.
In addition to ten consecutive cash rate rises, cost-of-living pressures, the rising cost of housing and increasing rental prices, a fixed rate cliff is looming. The Reserve Bank of Australia estimates over 800,000 Australians are due to roll off their fixed rate mortgage this year.
According to Anna Porter, Suburbanite Principal, market commentator and valuer, for many, this will result in their mortgage repayments doubling or even tripling.
"The current environment is the worst possible mix for those locked into a fixed rate approaching its end of life," says Porter.
"Whilst the banks typically assess borrowing at a higher rate, the current interest rates are at 11-year highs, so we expect to see a real squeeze on the budget as these fixed rates wear off."
Porter believes there is a lifeline – Airbnb.
"Households struggling with new repayments are turning to Airbnb to boost their income. They are simply moving back in with family so they can switch their home to an Airbnb full time, or some are doing it part-time," shares Porter.
"Savvy part-time Airbnb users simply do mini-stays with family and friends or go
away camping to free up peak times and maximise their revenue."
Depending on location and the time of year, homes can attract hundreds and even thousands of dollars a night, providing a nice retreat from mortgage repayments.
"In the permanent rental market, you will typically get 3% net returns, but rates are close to double this, so the return doesn't even make a dent in the repayments," she says.
"Airbnb can achieve much higher returns for the right property and the right location, helping some people cover their whole repayments."
If Airbnb is not an option for you, Anna says you need to be upfront with your bank – don't ignore the problem, as it will only get you in deeper.
"You may be able to get a payment holiday under financial hardship if things get really tough," says Anna.
"Now is also the time to get your accountant involved to do a crisis cash flow management plan which could be key to staying afloat."

DEDICATION TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT WINDSOR
For over 75 years, local manufacturer Windsor Blinds Awnings and Shutters has been at the forefront of design and technology. Established by Mr B.J Young (Bill) after he returned from World War II in 1946, Windsor quickly became nationally accepted as the leader in the blind industry, a position it still retains –recognised as being in the 'Top 10' of its field in Australia.
With Bill's passing in 2013, his legacy was passed down to his second-youngest son Craig, who had been part of the business since he was a boy. Craig has also relocated the company from its original Carrington premises to the current Cardiff location.
Nowadays, Craig is joined in the business by wife, Zdenka and a team of professionals who can offer customers a wealth of experience and knowledge. Some staff have been working in the company for over 20 years.
"The business is so entrenched in family that in addition to Craig's leadership, three out of his four brothers have been involved in the business at one stage or another
before moving on to other careers," said Zdenka.
"Our team has pride in their work, and we're a family. We locally manufacture the popular Ziptrak Blinds and most of our other outdoor blinds and awnings that we have on offer. We cater for commercial and domestic requirements."
Windsor's success can largely be attributed to Craig and Zdenka's dedication to customer service. With an offering that combines high-quality products, value for money and, above all, personal service, they continue to maintain 100% satisfaction for their customers.
Windsor uses only the best standard of componentry and materials, specifically designed for the Australian Environment. This ensures a long-lasting, quality product backed by the Windsor Warranty. Always recognising the customer's best interest, Windsor has kept and will remain up-to-date with all the latest developments, ideas, technologies, trends, and service standards that have become synonymous with the Windsor name.
