Cinderella Classic Fairytale Brought to Life Proudly Locally Owned and Produced FREE TAKE ME I’M ISSUE #88 JUNE 2023 + Empowering Young People …Sarah Williams + A Hilarious Battle of Cons – Dirty Rotten Scoundrels + ASPIRE Presents Original Production

You might be forgiven for thinking that the upcoming production of Cinderella at the Civic Theatre is just another school musical. Until, of course, you discover that the school in question is Newcastle's St Philip's Christian College.

With alums like Alana Tranter (Come From Away and soon to be opening the Sydney season of Disney's production of Beauty and the Beast) and graduates who've toured as technicians in Lion King, Aladdin and Frozen, this is undoubtedly no ordinary school production.

The multi-CONDA (City of Newcastle Drama Awards) award-winning school is renowned for its excellence in musical theatre productions and commitment to providing valuable professional learning opportunities for our students and inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.

This month we caught up with the driving force behind the school's dramatic arts programs, Michael Cooper, amid rehearsals and discovered that staging the magic of Cinderella right here in Newcastle is no small feat. Read more on page 16.

Continuing our focus on inspiring and empowering our region's young people, we learn more about Aspire this month. This creative and performing arts initiative of the Maitland Newcastle Catholic Schools office offers programs in theatre making, songwriting, scriptwriting, choreography and design that all catholic school students can participate in.

Aspire's 2023 extravaganza (26 to 29 July), features over 150 local students. An original production written by Aspire Artistic Director Anna Kerrigan in conjunction with the young cast, the show also strongly focuses on young people as creative artists. Read more on page 24.

Proud Awabakal woman, born and bred Novocastrian and 2023 Newcastle Woman of the Year, Sarah Williams, is on a mission to change Australia through advocacy, awareness and education about sexual violence. Heading up the not-for-profit organisation, What Were You Wearing? Australia (WWYW) Sarah has, at only 22, also just become the youngest person ever to have a petition debated in parliament. Read more about this impressive young woman on page 44.

Enjoy!

Hilarious Battle of Cons Live on Stage

WORDS DI VON ESSEN

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (The Musical), based on the 1988 film of the same name, starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, is set to be brought to life by the Metropolitan Players next month in an extended run (12 to 22 July) at St Philip's Christian College Theatre in Waratah.

With music and lyrics written by David Yazbek based on the book by Jeffrey Lane, the show opened on Broadway in March 2005

and received 10 Tony Award Nominations. The original West End production opened at the Savoy Theatre in March 2014, and the Australian show opened in 2013 to rave reviews, dubbed "best musical to hit Sydney this century" by the Sydney Morning Herald.

It's a challenge that local production company Metropolitan Players are happy to take on, and with over 45 years in the industry and successfully staging smash hits like Shrek in 2022 and Priscilla Queen of the Desert

in 2021; they're sure to knock it out of the park. This dedicated group of volunteers has developed a reputation for staging musicals of a very high standard.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels tells the story of two con men, a beautiful woman and the elite of the French Riviera, as they collide in this sexy and irreverent farce. Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking wealthy ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. Finally, they agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins, and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming to the brilliant music, and guessing to the end!

Classic Fairytale Brought to Life in a Truly Enchanting Way Cinderella

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER

The magical fairytale of Cinderella is coming to the Civic Theatre from 24 June until 1 July and promises to be a theatrical experience that will enchant the whole family. Presented by St Philip's Christian Senior College (SPCC), this is no ordinary school production. The multiCONDA (City of Newcastle Drama Awards) award-winning school is renowned for its excellent musical theatre productions produced by Michael Cooper, Director of Performing

Arts and Theatre Manager at SPCC and former CONDA judge.

The passion and commitment of Michael Cooper are integral to the success that the school has enjoyed with their musical theatre productions for the past 20 years, with several student alumni going on to great success in the theatre industry.

"Alana Tranter was one of our leading ladies," said Michael.

"She's just come off touring Come From Away and is opening in Sydney in Disney's

production of Beauty and the Beast. We've got alums who've toured as technicians in Lion King, Aladdin and Frozen. It's a testament to our commitment to providing valuable professional learning opportunities for our students and inspiring the next generation of industry professionals."

Michael grew up in Western Australia and Tasmania before moving to Newcastle to study at the University of Newcastle, where he attained a teaching degree majoring in Drama before heading to NIDA (National Institute of

Dramatic Art) to train in technical production. He has performed in many pro-am theatrical productions over the years but decided at the young age of 19 to focus on creating opportunities for others.

"I felt very strongly that I wanted to use my skills to enhance opportunities for others. I didn't find acting particularly fulfilling for myself and have relegated it to hobby status – useful for maintaining skills and contacts in the industry and being involved with my local community.

"When I was young, I went to nine different schools. The easiest way to become a part of each school community was to be involved in the school productions. I was a guy who could sing, so I often got the lead roles. As an educator, I looked at what opportunities I could provide students within my areas of influence that would enrich their lives and learning. What did I love as a student, and what didn't I get that would be amazing? That's what drives me to provide these opportunities for our students."

Michael has been keen to stage this particular version of Cinderella for over 20 years.

"This is a classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical revamped by Disney as a movie in 1997 (featuring Whitney Houston, Brandy and Whoopi Goldberg) and re-released as the 'Enchanted Version', which is what we are doing. It's been on my bucket list for a long time – it's a dream come true to be staging it now.

"When we are choosing our shows at SPCC, we look to the current cohort of students and the talent pool they represent. We also have to be able to secure the rights to perform the show. This year I could identify our Cinderellas early on and knew we had a chance. I was stoked when we obtained the rights.

"We have ensured our production includes all the well-known Cinderella moments with the prince giving a ball and a lost glass slipper, but have strategically enhanced much of the drama with comedy to ensure our audiences of all ages will have a rollicking good time. We've

capitalised on the comedy aspects, and the songs are amazing - they're catchy, warm and luxurious. The show speaks to young people who feel left out and alienated. The feel-good effect of watching this isolated character become the person everyone wants to be, who wins out in the end, is particularly well done in this version.

"The sumptuous music of Rodgers and Hammerstein will be delivered by the largest live orchestra we've ever gathered together, producing a beautiful sound that will ricochet through the theatre and delight the audiences.

"Staging the magic of Cinderella right here in Newcastle is no small feat with over 65 in the cast, 20 in the crew, dancers and musicians in the orchestra, and a large number of special effects that are delivered through a unique fusion of both physical and digital scenery that hasn't been seen in Newcastle before.

"I went to London last year and indulged my passion for theatre by seeing 11 productions in a week. I noted that 9 of the 11 shows used digital content as part of the set, enhancing the magic and extending the creative possibilities. It's done by using a rear projection skin. There have already been over 100 hours spent with our screen and media department at the school, creating digital content for the show to ensure the magic is realised in a way that crosses the boundaries of live theatre and cinema. A great example is when the pumpkin turns into a carriage. The pumpkin is digital. The carriage is live. Fusing the two together creates a unique and authentic audience experience. Our live audience will actually see a pumpkin turn into a carriage. It's exciting."

SPCC productions regularly attract over 6,000 patrons. Considering that only about 20,000 Novocastrians regularly attend theatre, this figure is impressive. It also means that although the school owns their own theatre, which is hired out as a venue to others, the senior school productions are staged at the Civic Theatre.

"Staging at the Civic Theatre, despite the cost of it, provides a much larger venue, but it also provides an incredible learning opportunity for our performers and technicians to work in a world-class venue alongside industry professionals. It also enables us to offer quality musical theatre at an affordable cost for both public audiences, but also school groups who can come and enjoy seeing a full-length show at the beautiful Civic Theatre.

The season strategically includes matinees so that school groups can attend.

"We get kids coming from all over the Hunter. It's wonderful. We have a big school following. Some schools have been coming ▶

17

for 20 years. They always book ahead because they don't want to miss out. A lot of kids don't get to see a full-length musical complete with a live orchestra, so we deliberately keep the costs low for them."

"At SPCC, we are big advocates for collaborative working and making this a part of real life. Staging at the Civic means that our students get to rub shoulders with industry professionals, working to a high standard and making them that little bit more industry ready."

Any student who wishes to participate in the production can, as only the lead roles and dancers are auditioned.

"Some of our students never enter the industry, but they learn valuable skills in collaborative working and build incredible friendships that can last for years. They're often the kids who may not be good at sports or don't perform well academically. We work on these shows for almost a year, and it builds

confidence, breaks down barriers and gives them a creative space and outlet that is all their own, as well as something to be very proud of at the end. Anyone who wants to try, can, including students with learning difficulties, support needs, English as a second language and disability. We believe that teaching skills in creativity, collaboration and confidence are important for every child and their future career."

Due to the demands of the Cinderella production, there are eight performances being run over two weeks rather than the usual six performances over one week. There are also two different Cinderellas to share the load. With 12 songs, it is essential to consider the vocal health of everyone, but the young actresses that are performing as Cinderella in particular. This altered season schedule will help the entire team's well-being and ensure that everyone enjoys the process to the fullest.

The benefits of training students in live theatre have led to the creation of High Street Productions, established in 2017, and now training over 150 students per week after school in live performance skills, including Drama, Musical Theatre, Screen Acting and Technical Production. This is open to non-SPCC students as well. Students are taught by passionate and experienced tutors and have the opportunity to perform in both scheduled productions and end of Semester Showcases.

Since beginning High Street Productions, Michael has noticed a higher calibre of performance skills in students participating in musical theatre productions like Cinderella and sees the training as a critical way to increase the capacity within the industry.

"Although there are several other drama training groups in Newcastle, we don't compete with each other. We each have our own supportive community, and there's no need to

compete that way. We see each other's shows, and we're all on the journey together. We have found that students participating in drama schools have, by and large, not done drama before – 90%, in fact. It simply increases our capacity to reach more children and grow our creative future."

The supportive community that aids SPCC includes a large number of volunteers, some of whom take annual leave to help out on the productions and consider it a highlight of their year. They include assistant stage managers, hair and make-up artists and other crew members. It is a tradition that on the last night of the production, hundreds of alumni attend the show.

Michael is a busy man. During the production he will clock over 100 hours per week in his multifaceted role as designer, tech lead and producer. Add to that auditions, planning and rehearsals for High Street Productions' next show, Matilda, to be staged at the SPCC theatre later this year, and it's clear that he is a passionate theatre educator and practitioner.

"I work hard to have a positive influence in the lives of young people and in particular through my own area of expertise, including dance, drama, music and creative expression. I want our young people to flourish and learn skills they can take with them on their journey through life, building their confidence and self-esteem, ▶

giving them experiences that will stand them in good stead for a successful life, and helping them reach their potential."

And as if all of that wasn't enough, Michael is about to embark on another kind of journey – one that takes him to Malawi. He is helping to establish Beyond Christian Academy, which has partnered with St Philip's Christian Education to offer life-changing education to children in Malawi. The aim of Beyond Christian Academy is to provide students with individualised learning frameworks, innovative and engaging learning environments and opportunities to excel in the whole of their life.

Michael will bring his expertise and enthusiasm to the project that aims to teach children a love of learning. When children love learning, they are more curious and engaged in their education, leading to deeper understanding and greater knowledge. Beyond academic achievement, a love of learning fosters a positive attitude towards personal growth and development, encouraging children to take risks and pursue their passions. The school will open in September this year, and Michael will escort 27 students from SPCC to Malawi in November.

"We raised $70,000 through fundraising last year for the school. These kids have nothing, and it's inspired our own students to have a heart for others."

In the meantime, there is a huge production of Cinderella almost ready to hit the stage at the Civic Theatre. With a long track record of winning CONDA awards for excellence in ensemble work, lead roles and productions, audiences can be guaranteed high standards in performance coupled with state-of-the-art set design and digital content to bring the magic of this classic fairytale to life in a truly enchanting way. Add a live orchestra, talented dancers and choreography, and this show will not disappoint.

"It's true that we have a reputation for excellence that we need to protect. It's an ongoing challenge to maintain that reputation or to exceed it. I believe that this show is something we could all do with right now, the laughs, the magic, the message, and the beauty of the music. I guarantee that audiences will leave the theatre smiling, happy and filled with joy."

MEET YOUR LOCAL ETC SMALL BUSINESS EXPERTS

ETC is a community-orientated, not-for-profit provider of employment and training services, helping people in many different situations to overcome their personal challenges and develop the skills they need to find sustainable employment.

Committed to reinvesting profits into the communities where they operate, ETC is built on respect, integrity, success and empowerment. This is evident in everything they do and especially in their people.

Two such people are Kimberlie (Kim) ClareCampbell and Julian Campbell, who have both lived and worked in the Hunter region for nearly two decades. With over 70 combined years of small business experience under their belt, you could say they are your local experts. What's better? You can receive their business advice for free.

You can meet Kim and Julian in person by attending your local Newcastle Entrepreneurship Expo, but we caught up with this dynamic duo in person to learn more about them (before you meet them!)

Kim moved from Central Coast to the Hunter as a Tai Chi Instructor in the 90s, where she discovered many different areas of the Hunter while teaching classes from Morrissett to Newcastle and out to Maitland and Nelson Bay. Kim's family (husband and son) have lived and worked in the Maitland area for the last 17 years and love the mixture of bush and farms.

"Each morning on my way to ETC's Maitland office, I drive along the banks of the Hunter River. I see the kangaroos grazing in the paddocks, the birds flittering, the changing seasons, and the fluctuating height of the river. It's an uplifting way to start the day," says Kim.

Kim has been actively involved in local craft groups, kid's sports, arts organisations, community fundraising activities and local business groups and chambers.

"For five years I was also a monthly guest on Business the Law and You, a business radio show on 2NUR FM and was able to share business information with the 20,0000 small business owners who tuned in live. I've also been a judge for several local Business Awards, including Singleton Business Awards and a sought-after guest speaker at business networking groups across the Hunter and Central Coast," says Kim.

"I have owned a successful Maitland-based craft business for over 17 years and helped other small business owners while working for the old NEIS program."

Julian moved to Newcastle in 1991 from a Managerial position in Melbourne. He participated in the first Newcastle NEIS course, became a trainer on the program and subsequently, General Manager of The Newcastle Business Centre.

"In my 31 years in the Hunter, I have built a strong reputation through 20 years hosting a Business Show on a local radio station, holding the position of CEO with a major Law Firm,

Director with the Lake Macquarie Business Enterprise Centre and Business Development Manager with a local accounting firm," says Julian.

"This led me to present regularly to business groups, and my legendary use of the Emperor Penguin in relation to business is still talked about after 25 years," he added (you will have to ask him about that one yourself!)

Although not a member of the Lions Club organisation, in November 2014, Julian was awarded The Melvin Jones Fellowship by the Lions Clubs International Foundation in recognition of his humanitarian work.

"The Lions Club award is given to recognise outstanding Lions or members of the public – like I was at the time and recognised my training work with their Youth Leaders Training Program. So it was really special," says Julian.

Catch up with Kim and Julian, experience new local small businesses showcasing their products and services, and hear from industry experts, leaders and other successful entrepreneurs at the Newcastle Entrepreneurship Expo.

If you're unable to make it to the expo, feel free to contact Julian and Kim to discuss your business needs. Whether you're interested in starting your own business or are an existing small business owner needing support - they can assist you through Workforce AustraliaSelf Employment Assistance. Do You Have a Business in Wallsend?

What’s New in WALLSEND?

The beautiful historic township of Wallsend continues to grow and prosper, with several new businesses popping up this year. Local business is supported by the Wallsend Town Business Association (WTBA), which aims to promote the development, beautification, and advancement of local businesses within the area. Wallsend enjoys a robust local community that celebrates its diversity and multiculturalism.

Frank Fabrizio, the owner of Papa Franco, which opened in December 2022, chose Wallsend as the first in a series of Italian family restaurants because it has the ‘right’ demographic.

“Papa Franco is a family restaurant. The recipes are our family favourites,” said Frank.

“They are Italian with an Australian twist – just like me! We chose Wallsend as the first restaurant to open because we knew that many young families living out that way would appreciate our warm and welcoming vibe. We like to think of ourselves as the place where family and food come together.”

Serving pizza, pasta, parmi and ribs, the crowds have been

pouring into Papa Franco since they opened, and it’s been popular for family celebrations with all the generations. With another restaurant recently opening in Nelson Bay and plans to open more in Hamilton, Kotara and Wyong, Papa Franco has big plans and is in Wallsend to stay. Located at 73 Nelson Street.

Opening in February earlier this year, Supreme Brew and Bake is another new food outlet in town. Serving a delicious range of brews and baked goods such as muffins, pies, sausage rolls, pasties, wraps, freshly made sandwiches and a vast range of lunch and breakfast specials, you can find them next to OPSM in Wallsend Village.

If tea is your thing, you can’t go past the colourful and creative Sharetea, which has over 70 different drink options, including smoothies, crushes and yoghurts. Bubble tea originated in Taiwan and is a fun, scrumptious tea that can be found right next door to Kingsmen Hair, also in Wallsend Village.

There’s no need to go further afield for your next celebration, lunch or coffee catch-up with such a great variety of food and beverage options right in the heart of Wallsend.

Custodians of Koalas Deliver a Brighter Future

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

Koalas are an endangered species. According to state government research, by 2050, it will be extremely rare to see a koala in the wild. This is just 27 years away, and time is ticking. The passionate team at the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, which supports the work of the Port Stephens Koala Hospital, are working tirelessly to help prevent this outcome, but they can’t do it alone. Working on the principle that a whole of community response is required for success, they invite you to become a Koala Crusader. Becoming a Koala Crusader provides an opportunity for individuals to directly contribute financially to the preservation of koalas in the Port Stephens region. A decade ago, the Port Stephens region counted koalas in the 1000s; today, that number has reduced to a count in the 100s. Becoming a Koala Crusader costs just $129, with 25% of that going directly to the long-term rehabilitation, preservation, and conservation of koalas in the Port Stephens area. In addition to this direct financial contribution, Koala Crusaders also receive unlimited entry into the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary for 12 months, a 10% discount off souvenirs and gifts in the Fat Possum Café, a 10% discount off accommodation at the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary; bring a friend for free on Wild Koala Day in May each year;

a pre-booked guided tour; a Pledge Certificate; a Koala Crusader Plush; a Koala Crusader Car Sticker; Baseball Cap; Writing Pen and Lapel Pin.

A Port Stephens Koala Crusader pledges to, wherever possible, “educate and encourage all to better understand the plight facing koalas today and to do whatever I can to ensure their long-term survival in the wild”

“Becoming a Koala Crusader is just another way to participate in conservation efforts,” said James Cook, Business Development and Marketing Manager of Port Stephens Holiday Parks.

“It is the whole of society response that matters. The Koala Crusaders project is conservation via education. Humanity does better when it learns about a problem. Greater knowledge leads to better outcomes.

“The Koala Crusaders project is targeted at those that think it makes a good gift for someone else. Ideal for grandparents to gift to the next generation, creating custodians of koalas for a better future. Better education at a young age helps to form opinions about the long-term survivability of the species. This is conservation by education.”

In 2017 the Port Stephens Council received a NSW State government grant for $3 million to go towards establishing a koala hospital. Port Stephens Council contributed the remaining

funds towards the multimillion dollar facility. The local koala population was under threat from land clearing, motor vehicles and dogs, and the only specialist care available was in Port Macquarie or Sydney. Travelling long distances to provide the necessary care caused such extreme stress on the koalas that mortality rates were very high.

“Port Stephens Council had to decide on the best model to ensure the ongoing success for preserving our koala population. Rather than taking the less secure approach of constantly seeking more grants to keep going or asking ratepayers to pay for it, the self-funded business model was chosen, and it has been hugely successful.”

According to Tourism Australia, Pre-Covid, 86% of international tourists aim to interact with a koala, and this activity is worth $2.7 billion.

“Covid has been a blessing in disguise. The facility opened just as the covid pandemic hit. This enabled us to iron out any wrinkles in operation and to ensure world-class standards. The domestic market has been the mainstay of the sanctuary so far, with international tourism only now picking up. Independent Net Promoter Scores for the Koala Sanctuary have been consistently in the 90s since the opening, indicating that it exceeds guest expectations and is considered a world-class facility.”

One of the points of difference for the facility is that visitors see the koalas in the wild with fewer barriers or cages, and human interaction is kept to a bare minimum. In addition, the elevated boardwalk lets you enter into their environment rather than the other way around. For Koala Crusaders, nothing could be more beautiful. To become a Koala Crusader, visit www.portstephenskoalasanctuary.com.au.

Annual Exhibition Set to WOW Visitors

e Cellar Restaurant delivers modern contemporary Australian cuisine, utilising local and seasonal quality ingredients. Dine in our indoor garden se ing or outside in the courtyard.

Try our NEW MENU!

Morpeth Gallery’s annual Feathers & Fur Wildlife Art Exhibition has become one of the most noteworthy events in the art calendar, often referred to as the ‘Oscars of international wildlife art.’ But here in the Hunter, we like to refer to the annual Wildlife Art show of the year as the ‘Animal Archibalds!’

Each year, this exhibition showcases a stunning selection of shortlisted artworks commended by an expert judging panel, which portray a variety of techniques and mediums.

The subjects may not be famous; however, many of the artists have won multiple awards on the international scene and will be in residence, painting at their easels across the June long weekend (10 to 12 June). Entry is free, and the exhibition will be open between 10am and 5pm daily.

Each artist will have new paintings and exclusive merchandise available. The Hunter Valley Finch Club will also be showing their fantastic collection of finches during the exhibition, with artists working alongside the finch breeders so that visitors can appreciate the pint-sized birds on canvas and in real life.

Playing an integral role in helping to increase awareness of endangered species, the Feathers & Fur Exhibition also utilises the power of art to celebrate wildlife, support awareness and raise funds for endangered species across Australia.

Amongst the artists in residence will be Australia’s finest wildlife artist, James Hough. James is the official artist for Australian Geographic and has also been awarded two gold medals for the best wildlife painting in the world. James says his close interaction while painting many endangered species has helped further open his eyes to the importance of the conservation effort needed for the future.

Also exhibiting is Stephen Jesic, who has won the best wildlife painting in the world five out of the last eight years, and Natalie Jane Parker, whose artworks appear on plates, mugs, trays, tea towels, and jigsaw puzzles sold around the world.

FOSTER CARERS are

PEOPLE DOING

THINGS in your local community and we urgently need more of them.

Have you ever had a cup of tea with a foster carer? What does it even mean to provide foster care? Did you know that in Australia there are over *45, 000 kids in out-of-home care.

Fostering does not have to be full-time. Respite Carers look after children and young people on weekends or for short periods while their regular foster carer has a break. It can be difficult for a child to go to different people so we try to arrange for the child always to go to the same Respite Carer so they can get to know each other.

At Key Assets Australia, we provide our foster carers with ongoing training, 24/7 support, a dedicated social worker, and an allowance. We hold regular events and connect foster carers with each other for extra support. Are you thinking of becoming a foster carer? Hear from one of our dedicated carers on their experience:

*Matteo is 44 years old and became a foster carer with Key Assets 2 years ago. Wanting to make a

difference in the life of a young person, he now does respite care for Sam who is 13 years old. * Matteo says that being a foster carer has been a rewarding and challenging experience.

Anyone can apply to become a foster carer. We celebrate diversity and welcome enquiries from people who are single or in a relationship, homeowners or renting. Your culture, religion or sexual orientation doesn’t affect your eligibility for foster care. We believe the diversity of our carers is vital when finding the best possible family for a foster child.

Get in touch with one of our friendly team members today at 1800 93 2273 or visit canifoster.org.au

If you feel you have the love, space, and energy to provide a safe and happy home, then we would love to talk to you about the options of respite care, short-term, or long-term care. Scan

Reversing Gum Disease

Contrary to the human instinct of brushing less and avoiding their gums so they don’t bleed, that red blood is actually the signal from the gums for extra attention by you and your Dentist!

Do you have bleeding gums? Do you have hard tags underneath your gums that catch/ tear your floss? Are your gums always tender even though you have routine six monthly cleans?

Healthy gums do not bleed or hurt during everyday dental care. Only when we have been incomplete in the routine removal of plaque from the gums, along with stressful events, is gum disease triggered.

Luckily, gum disease comes in two types – reversible (gingivitis) and irreversible (periodontitis). The reversible gum disease is often completely curable with thorough professional cleans and precise patient education on how to keep the gums clean while they heal.

Prolonged exposure to debris and bacterial plaque on the gumline and beneath the gum

can get calcified by the minerals in your saliva, forming tartar or calculus. Tartar is like having a splinter lodged in your skin. It contributes to redness, tenderness and localised infection if left there long enough. These tartar tags or spikes aggravate your gums and must be professionally cleaned and removed.

Like splinter removal, you would never snip the top off the splinter and leave the end lodged under your skin, likewise for tartar. Adequate time and skill are required for the complete removal of tartar – including the part above and below the gumline – allowing complete recovery from gingivitis and avoiding periodontitis.

At Belledental, all our clinicians are allocated sufficient time to ensure thorough cleaning, education and instructions. Also, Belledental is lucky to have an expert in gum disease on staff - Dr Chia-wen Yeh. Chia has been participating in a research program and has specific techniques and education concepts for managing and controlling gum disease.

To reverse gum disease and have your gums return to health, please get in touch with Belledental. All our cleans are thorough, and we have a reputation for delivering recovery from gum disease with our unique Belledental protocol.

IN SEARCH OF COMMON DECENCY

I love having friends who disagree with me. Partly because I live for an intelligent, well-argued debate, and I think to have that, you need to be able to sometimes see things from a different perspective. Given how polarised the world is, it's nice to hear a counterargument

from someone you like rather than the talking head on TV who you are already inclined to believe or disbelieve for one reason or another.

Despite the old adage, I think people you like should be able to disagree on most topics.

Politics, religion, and even which way the toilet paper goes. I think that's healthy. I have a very close friend (who will hate that I'm mentioning her here) who had conversations with me during the height of covid that, if it had come from a stranger, would have led me to believe they were wearing a tin hat.

We would have long back-and-forth debates, neither really changing the other's

mind, but I think all you can hope for is to be heard. I never once came away from those chats thinking we weren't friends anymore. I know her to be one of the kindest people, a hard worker (to her own detriment at times), and she loves her family. Hell, for that matter, she loves mine and would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it.

That was a long-winded way of saying everyone I'm friends with doesn't need to have a monolithic opinion about the world on every subject. That said, I am always shocked when anyone displays behaviour that is counter to something that feels to me like a moral absolute. For example, sending threats of violence to a stranger and their family for something true they said on TV. This seems like something we should all be able to agree on as unacceptable.

Stan Grant has just stepped down from Q&A, and apparently, we don't all agree.

Stan's departing speech and everything I have seen him say publicly has been filled with love and compassion. He is a classy and beautiful human being. So the question has to be asked, what did he say during the coronation coverage that bothered people so much?

He was invited onto a panel show to provide his point of view. What about that left you so enraged? I saw someone say about the

coverage, "Well, there is a time and a place", and all I could think was, "Yes, and this was it". They were all there covering an event that was only happening because of history and longstanding tradition, so what better time would there be to be talking about the history of the monarchy and the commonwealth that they controlled? It was factual information, said in context.

Part of being proud of something is embracing the good things that have come from it, acknowledging the bad, and dedicating yourself to not repeating any of that history. Pretending it didn't happen, jumping on anyone who mentions it, and mindlessly waving a British flag makes you devoid of complex thought.

I look after many social media platforms for well-known people, and I'm constantly amazed by the hateful, nasty things people say to "celebrities". Not about their behaviour but about who they are, what they look like, who they love. People seem to think you should be able to take it if you are in the public eye. Just how famous does one have to be to warrant a shred of decency from these trolls?

Hopefully, Stan will be back on the air soon. I, for one, will miss his compassion and perspective.

Sarah Williams

EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE TO FOSTER CHANGE

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

Sarah Williams, aged just 22 years, is on a mission to change Australia through advocacy, awareness and education about sexual violence. A proud Awabakal woman, a born and bred Novocastrian and the 2023 Newcastle Woman of the Year, Sarah also heads up the not-for-profit organisation, What Were You Wearing? Australia (WWYW) and has just become the youngest person ever to have a petition debated in parliament.

Sarah has been working closely with Tim Crakanthorp MP on a petition to parliament calling for mandatory drink spiking and sexual violence training for security and bar staff in all licenced venues in New South Wales. The petition, which needed 20,000 signatures by 25 May to be debated by the legislative assembly, is seen as critical to making nightlife safer after a massive increase in the incidence of spiking and chronic underreporting of the activity. The

petition successfully achieved 20,000 signatures and will now be debated in parliament this month.

"Sarah's drive and compassion are inspiring, so it's a privilege to be able to work with her, raise awareness and support WWYW's initiatives," said Tim Crakanthorp MP.

"I get goosebumps every time I hear her speak, and she's already showing the hallmarks of being a real changemaker in our community".

Her journey as a survivor advocate begins with her history of child sexual abuse, family and domestic violence and adult sexual assault. Her experiences made her angry and passionate about doing something to make change. Currently a Bachelor of Law and Communications student at the University of Newcastle, Sarah volunteers over 50 hours a week to WWYW and is a founding member of Full Stop Australia, Survivor Advocates Advisory Group, established in partnership with the University of Newcastle.

It all began in 2021 when Sarah contacted the creators of What Were You Wearing? in the United States, keen to establish an exhibition as part of her university studies. The exhibition in the US began in 2014 and showcased the clothing of anonymous sexual assault victims to challenge the concept that provocative clothing contributes to the reasons behind the attacks and to highlight the prevalence of victim blaming. She was given the go-ahead to run with it and was mentored by the University Gender Research Network to set up the exhibition as part of the 16 Days of Activism (a campaign against gender-based violence). She began by collecting the stories of survivors, and by June, they'd gone viral. At the time of the exhibition opening on 25 November 2021, she had collected 9,500 stories from the Hunter. Today she has over 26,200 and 82,000 followers on TikTok, where she has created a safe space of support and community.

"The response to the exhibition and the stories I collected was overwhelming," said Sarah.

"It became apparent by the sheer numbers that more needed to be done. That's how the not-for-profit organisation began. We kicked off in 2022 with 20 team members. That number has now grown to 55."

That same year, Sarah was awarded the New South Wales Volunteer of the Year award. She's also been the recipient of the Youth of the Year from the Newcastle Business Club, NSW Volunteer of the Year by Youth Action and Student Entrepreneur of the Year by the University of Newcastle.

WWYW organises marches and protests to draw attention to sexual violence, provides information and support to victim-survivors, helps them with victim services applications and psychology appointments, and provides Survivor Packs. The packs are given to victims soon after the assault containing self-care items, a journal and pen, a teddy bear and helpful information. They are delivered free to homes and hospitals.

"We still collect stories too. In fact, 14,000 of them reference music festivals which led to the creation of our Safe Spaces. We attend music festivals, university campuses and events to create safe, chill-out zones where people can go to escape the frantic pace or if they are being harassed. Many of the policies and procedures at these events are not traumainformed.

"Our staff also monitor the crowds to make sure people are ok, ensure that the correct procedures are adhered to in police strip searches, which should be female to female

and that the security staff are following correct protocols."

Shockingly, there are no sexual violence/ assault support groups in Newcastle. There are plenty of domestic violence support groups but no ongoing sexual violence groups. This month, WWYW is kicking off the first, with a psychologist, to create a safe space for survivors to heal.

Sarah's high profile and recognition are a double-edged sword. She is keen to use her voice for good and to showcase, as a victimsurvivor herself, that good things can still happen in your life. However, she feels like she must always be strong and has to be a beacon of hope for other survivors, yet she is still struggling with the consequences of her own assaults and the legal system.

"Even though I have spearheaded the organisation, injustices still happen for people like me. It's just as bad. I wouldn't be here without WWYW. I was suicidal when I started the exhibition. My councillor told me I needed to stay alive until the exhibition opened to help survivors. After I saw the impact the work had, there was no way that I could take that way out.

So many people needed my help.

"I have a talented team, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Every week I volunteer 50 to 60 hours. I donated two of my university scholarships to fund the exhibition and quit my last job so I could do my volunteer work. It impacts my university study, and it's a heavy degree. I give it my all now, hoping it will pay me in the future. The goal is for the organisation to be able to pay its employees.

"The government should be funding us. We received a grant of $20,000 from Tim to fund the festival Safe Spaces for six months. It's a good start. We are on the ground making real change. The statistics back us up. $100,000 would really make a difference.

"Domestic violence is being recognised, and awareness is growing along with policy and funding. Sexual violence, however, is swept under the rug, and without funding and donations, our services won't survive. We can't volunteer forever."

Empowering young people and minority groups to show they can make a change is at the heart of everything Sarah does.

"Enough is enough. Young people can make

a change. Step up and take action, even in small ways. Volunteer. Share a post or talk to people. Be part of the healing journey. Meeting other survivors helps you understand that what happened to you is not your fault. It gives you a whole new community. Make your own family. You don't have to give up on yourself.

Sarah has big plans for WWYW, with a vision to take it Australia-wide.

"I want to establish a community centre in every major city in Australia. An all-in-one centre where survivors can access information and support in law, psychology and medicine. A safe space. At the moment, it can take up to a year just to access all the support you need, and we can help with that burden. Newcastle will be the first in the next five years.

"There are other petitions, other campaigns to run, more improvements to make in the system, more injustices to fight. You know, the Brittany Higgins case was devastating. The media destroyed her, and the legal system is designed to protect the perpetrators while the victims are traumatised. Victim-blaming must stop, and WWYW aims to take that on and more."

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

HUNTER OUTPERFORMS NATION'S LABOUR MARKET

Despite ongoing economic headwinds, the region's employment market is showing continued resilience, observes the region's peak industry body Business Hunter.

The latest ABS Regional Labour Force data (April 2023) reveal the Hunter region's unemployment rates have continued to fall, despite national unemployment rising. Business Hunter CEO Bob Hawes said this was an unusual outcome.

"While the monthly figures are volatile, we're typically a little softer than the national figure, so this is an interesting development and something we'll continue to track," said Mr Hawes.

The monthly unemployment rate in the Hunter Valley dropped to 1.7% from 4.2% in March, and the rate in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie fell to 2.9%, down from 3.4% in March.

The less volatile 12-month average figures continued to fall, from 4% to 3.9% in the Hunter Valley and 3.5% to 3.3% for Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The national figure rose from 3.5% to 3.7%.

Mr Hawes said at the surface, the regional labour force market was defying gravity, continuing to remain strong despite rising cost pressures and housing shortages.

CITY OF NEWCASTLE'S RECORD BUDGET DELIVERING BENEFITS TO COMMUNITY

More than $25.7 million will be invested into maintaining and enhancing the city's roads, bridges and footpaths as part of a record Budget unanimously adopted by Council late last month.

City of Newcastle is significantly boosting its investment in essential community infrastructure in 2023/24, pouring $7.5 million into its road resurfacing program and more than doubling its spending on road rehabilitation projects as part of the most extensive annual capital works program to date.

More than $137 million has been earmarked for investment into local facilities and infrastructure, with almost 270 projects planned

across the local government area during the next financial year.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said this was a financially prudent Budget balancing community needs with a forecast $6.9 million surplus.

"This Budget is focussed on providing real benefits for our community in their everyday lives, whether it's investing more than $15 million into improving our roads, spending $1.2 million to extend our city's footpath network or making it easier for people to get around Newcastle with $3.6 million for new cycleways," Cr Nelmes said.

"We recognise the vital role our recreational facilities and open spaces play in the lives of our community, so we're investing $19.7 million into new and improved parks, playgrounds, sporting and aquatic facilities, including $5 million towards the new all-abilities playground at Foreshore Park and $1.9 million for the playspace at Gregson Park.

"We're also committed to caring for our natural environment, with $13.5 million for environmental sustainability initiatives, including $8 million towards planning and protecting our coastline, estuaries and wetlands, $1.5 million towards street tree planting projects and $1 million for upgrades at Blackbutt Reserve.

"City of Newcastle's 2023/24 Budget will meet the expectations of our community while still following a path of financial stability to ensure our city remains an attractive and inclusive place to live, work and visit, now and into the future."

TINY FOREST SPROUTING BIG BENEFITS IN LAKE MAC

It's known as a 'tiny forest', but a new green space sprouting in Lake Macquarie is set to reap huge benefits for the local environment.

Teralba Public School students working on the tiny forest site

Dozens of students from Teralba Public School helped plant the forest's first trees before a larger-scale community planting day.

Lake Macquarie City Council Section Manager Community Assets Rob Morris said the concept of the tiny forest, pioneered in Japan, called for hundreds of native trees of various species to be planted densely in enriched soil.

"Dense planting promotes competitive growth habits in the trees, and experience at other sites shows they can grow up to 10 times faster than trees in a traditional forest," he said.

"That means this tiny forest will hopefully reach its mature structure in about 10-20 years rather than 200 years."

"That density also helps them become far more biodiverse than monoculture forests."

Mr Morris said hopes were high that the 750 plants to be established in the Teralba tiny forest – just 340sqm in size – would one day provide habitat for local threatened species, such as the powerful owl and the squirrel glider.

The Teralba tiny forest will also act as an outdoor classroom, with sandstone blocks installed for people to sit and enjoy the soon-tobe verdant surroundings.

The project is led by ReLeaf Lake Mac and the Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhoods Alliance, with support from Council, Earthwatch Australia, Hunter Water and Origin.

Community volunteers called 'Tree Keepers', will help maintain the site and the ReLeaf Lake Mac team will water and weed the site regularly for the first two years.

"What we're doing in Teralba will play a small but important part in mitigating the

impacts of climate change, providing habitat for wildlife and reconnecting people with nature," said ReLeaf Lake Mac spokeswoman Anna Noon.

They will also undertake regular citizen science activities to monitor biodiversity, temperature, growth and biomass as the forest develops.

THANKING CHARLESTOWN'S VOLUNTEERS

Whether they are keeping us safe in the water, improving our community spaces or working with young people to develop their skills, Charlestown's volunteers are making a vital contribution to our community.

"They do this freely and without fanfare, but our society simply wouldn't function effectively without them," said Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison.

Over 75% of NSW's population are volunteers, contributing hours of effort worth $127 billion to the state's economy.

Ms Harrison urged the community to recognise their unsung heroes with a 2023 Volunteer of the Year nomination, saying the awards were an opportunity to shine a spotlight on those who generously give their time without fanfare.

"I pay tribute to all the amazing people across Charlestown who volunteer in aged care, emergency services, animal welfare, environmental management, health, sport, education, tourism and all other areas."

June Horoscopes

ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

STAR OF THE MONTH GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Geminis are prompted to take more of a gamble this year, which could mean a change of address or occupation. While you may quietly dread the upheaval this suggests, don't waste your energy resisting. Sure, you're tempted to stay nestled in the familiar, but change doesn't necessarily bring chaos. Remember, the universe never gives you more than you can handle. The time's right to get the ball rolling on contracts that promise long-term success. But it's not all work. Look forward to mischievous August - a month that offers the chance to mix business with some delightful play.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

This month brings sweeping changes. Prepare to push all professional projects during the first half of June. Happily, the second half will be better spent socialising and having fun. Emotional freedom is also important. You want a free hand to make your own choices and to assert your individuality - without compromise. If you make the occasional mistake, don't fret. The spirit can only grow when challenged.

LEO 23 JULY –

22 AUGUST

June whisks you out of the playground and plants you back at work, which is precisely where you want to be. After the 17th, you could meet all the right contacts. Use your powers of persuasion to revive a career plan. Expand your skills, and by the new year, you should be rewarded with a professional breakthrough. The downside? Your love life might go on hold, but not for long.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

This month you're socially magnetic and come across as a professional wizard at work. The people you meet and the directions you take steer you towards happiness and success. This also extends to the romantic arena with your irresistible allure drawing love or new friendship to you. At work, expect to rub shoulders with seasoned professionals who seem all too happy to help you.

Librans have weathered tough times for too long, and you've been worn down by all the nonsense that the heavens can muster. So, at what stage do you say "enough"? Well, as long as you're still breathing, you have precious little choice but to go where life leads you. Don't worry. You've clocked up plenty of positive karmic points. You're about to cash in on many well-deserved rewards.

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

Early June may not be your best time. If putting on an act gets you by, fine - but if your dilemma is desperate, tell it like it is. Besides, not everyone is playing fair. Call it manipulation or coercion - a certain someone knows which strings to pull. The upside? When Venus offers extra time for play later in the month, slip into party mode. At the same time, the Sun generously boosts finances.

SAGITTARIUS

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Thanks to a super-confident Jupiter, you find the courage to be yourself without fear or apology this coming year. Work, too, is a happier place to be - especially for those involved in creative work. Singles may marry or form a relationship with an older or mature individual - very likely, karmic in nature. The great news? The promise of a love that lasts. For those with children, this is a year when you could feel particularly proud of them.

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

Sociable Jupiter steps into your sector of romance and fun and stays for an entire year. Jupiter will take all your favourite things - like love, parties, children and entertainmentand make them even better. Venus, too, has surprises up her sleeve. This sexually-alluring planet triggers the law of attraction your way. Money should also come more easily. Just don't take foolish risks. Clear credit cards, don't add to them.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

Where have you been, my elusive friend? Perhaps in search of love's rainbow. If so, you're probably ready to click your heels and wish for home. This is where all Aquarians

will be happiest this month - taking comfort in the familiar. And, yes, you could be forgiven for feeling slightly cheated in the love stakes lately. So if fresh romantic prospects soar in on June's breeze, don't waste a minute. You deserve a glorious time.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

As anyone who has been forced onto a stage will tell you, it can be overwhelming. This month you might find yourself in the spotlight but doing fine. Surges of brilliance could even earn you an encore or two. Finances, though, could become a source of concern. Those "must-have" urges may tempt even the strongest of wills. Sentimental romantic ties could also lead to a revisit of old grounds. So if already coupled, take care.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

This next year Jupiter highlights your sector of property, joint finances and partnerships. For some, this can indicate an inheritance or financial boost - possibly via a windfall or financial benefit. Whatever happens, it's a time when Jupiter encourages you to try something new. Your mind is energised; you're busier with friends, projects and meetings. Don't rule out passion either - kiss those loveless nights goodbye.

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY

It's a time of sudden, perhaps bizarre, changes which, in turn, could incite feelings of panic. Try to enjoy the moment and don't plan too far ahead. This month may also bring economic change - money and status could be lost or gained. In matters of the heart, heated passions forge a whole new arrangement for loved-up Taureans. Singles seek close encounters, while couples embrace their nearest desires.
