Jody Miller is a young woman on a mission, bringing her talent and chutzpah to the Newcastle theatre scene with impressive results. Jody grew up within the theatre industry, spending her childhood hanging around theatres and backstage areas, helping out when she was old enough. At just 17, she set up Chookas Entertainment to provide herself with work in the industry.

From humble beginnings, Jody has quickly become a wellknown face in the industry, having spent the past three years as vice president of the City of Newcastle Drama Association (CONDA). This May and June, see her production company present two musical comedy greats with Legally Blonde the Musical, closely followed by Company hitting stages around Newcastle. Read more on page 16.

Two local gals are set for the adventure of a lifetime when they join a convoy of teams this month in the Shitbox Rally, Australia's largest independently run fundraiser for the Cancer Council, travelling from Newcastle to Townsville via Betoota over seven days.

As if the distance wasn't enough, participants are required to drive cars worth $1,500 or less across Australia via some of its toughest outback roads. But it's all for a great cause, as this remarkable event has raised over $33 million since the first rally in 2010. Find out how you can help on page 38.

This month, there is something for everyone, with the Archibald Prize exhibition continuing at MAC, Newcastle Theatre Company's The Government Inspector, Gypsy at Christ Church Cathedral, Little Women – The Broadway Musical and annual favourite, the Caravan & Camping, 4WD, Fish and Boat Show.

The first week in June will see our stages welcoming a plethora of performers from all over the world and some a little more local. The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, featuring visiting overseas artists, returning Australian internationals, and outstanding local musicians, kick off the month (see page 24), bookended by the young up-and-coming cast of Cinderella hitting the stage towards the end of the month. Jody Miller is a young woman on a mission. Armed with a Bachelor in Musical Theatre from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, a Diploma of Dance through Village Dance, a Masters of Teaching (Music) and a lifetime of experience working in theatrical productions in Sydney, this 27-year-old is bringing her talent and chutzpah to the Newcastle theatre scene with impressive results.

This May and June, see her production company, Chookas Entertainment, present two musical comedy greats with Legally Blonde the Musical at Civic Playhouse, 17 – 27 May and the Stephen Sondeheim classic Company at Newcastle Theatre Company, 14 – 24 June

Jody grew up within the theatre industry. Her mother was a highly regarded member of the pro/am musical theatre company Packemin Productions operating out of Parramatta's Riverside Theatres and Chatswood's Concourse Theatre. She spent her childhood hanging around theatres and backstage areas, helping out when she was old enough. At the age of 17, when she was just in year 12, she set up Chookas Entertainment to provide herself with work in the industry. From humble beginnings hiring out for children's parties, then growing into the shopping centre entertainment space, public events and cabarets, this was her side hustle while she studied to be a teacher. Driven out of Sydney by expensive real estate, Jody moved to Newcastle in 2016 and saw a gap in the market that she felt driven to fill.

"Newcastle is a fascinating place," said Jody.

"We're spoiled for choice when it comes to shows for kids and the over 30s. With 44 theatre companies and training schools such as Hunter Drama, Young People's Theatre and Tantrum, a lot is going on, but there's almost nothing for artists in their 20s. The kids age out at 16, around the time they're doing the HSC. If they

want to continue, there's not much available for them. I'm passionate about creating work and telling the stories of people in this age group. Providing opportunities for young adults with a different style of theatre."

Jody quickly became involved in the industry and has spent the past three years as vice president of the City of Newcastle Drama Association (CONDA). But it wasn't always smooth sailing.

"When I first moved here, I found it very difficult. No one would give me a chance, despite the fact that I'd just finished touring a professional production as an assistant stage manager. I offered my services, completely volunteer, to do just about anything, and no one was interested," said Jody.

"They literally said, 'No thanks – we have our people'. I would have been happy mopping a stage. It was this cliquey-ness that led me to create my own opportunities by producing our first show, 21 Chump Street, in 2020."

Jody also sees the local industry as heavily male-slanted, with fewer lead roles for women. She's been disappointed to hear young women disregarded due to a perceived lack

of experience. There are very few female-run companies and not a lot of women to mentor those coming into the industry, with one notable exception, her own mentor Mercia Buck OAM.

"Mercia is phenomenal. She helped start Opera Hunter back in 1986 and was made a Freeman of the City of Lake Macquarie a couple of years ago. I have no idea how old Mercia is, but she's still going strong. She takes art very seriously, and I find her inspirational. I'm fortunate to have worked with her."

Jody now recognises that it's time to become more visible and not hide her success with Chookas Entertainment. It's important for other young women to see what can be done and follow the trail she is forging.

"I have felt very invisible, but at the same time, I'm super proud of what I've managed to achieve. I think that when I wasn't taken seriously by the male-dominated industry, I kind of put my head down with the idea that if I just did what I was good at, people would start to notice – because I knew my worth. And I guess people are noticing because our shows sell out four weeks in advance."

All of the theatre companies in Newcastle are pro/am or amateur. This means they can't afford to pay award rates to their performers, creatives and crew. Many people in the community are confused by what pro/am actually means. By definition, it's a theatre company that is part professional and part amateur. In some cases, professional performers or the creative team are paid, whilst the rest of the cast and crew are unpaid. Jody is proud that at Chookas Entertainment, everyone is paid a profit share, although it's nowhere near the industry award of approximately $1250 per week. ▶

"It's really important to me that we show how much we value our team. Unfortunately, the costs to produce theatre prevent establishing a fully professional company here in Newcastle. I can't see it happening under these circumstances. Venue costs and availability are the biggest barriers. The struggle is real. From a $60 ticket price, we may only get $25, and the venue may cost us $30,000. And we're only now beginning to come out of the difficulties of covid and what that's meant for live entertainment," said Jody.

"Plus, we know from research undertaken by CONDA President Dr. Shane Bransdon that approximately only 5% of the Newcastle population actually attend live theatre. When I went to the Elton John concert, it made me think that if only every person there would go to one show a year, it would transform our local industry.

"One of the great things about Newcastle's pro/am theatre is that the talent pool is extraordinary. With so many training facilities here, the pro/am quality is exceptionally high. When we run auditions, we get up to 200 people auditioning; it's very competitive."

Jody says she's also very fortunate to be assisted by her husband Andrew Miller.

"Andrew is a builder, so he makes all the

sets and assists with all productions. I couldn't achieve all of this without him by my side," says Jody.

Chookas Entertainments' previous theatre works include the recent sold-out production of Heathers the Musical (November 2022), Chicago the Musical (June 2022), The Things I Could Never Tell Steven (July 2022), 5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche (March 2022), Be More Chill the Musical (November 2021) and 21 Chump St: the Musical (March 2020). Jody's next production is Legally Blonde the Musical, which is well on the way to being a sell-out at the time of writing.

"We're excited to share this classic production with audiences in Newcastle, who have already shown so much enthusiasm for the show...whether they're die-hard fans of the movie or can't wait to relive the '90s through a smash hit soundtrack. We've been overwhelmed with positive responses and audiences wanting to know what fresh take this production will involve."

A fabulously fun award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde the Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. to, this show will turn the city of Newcastle pink. Starring musical theatre artist Brynn Hulls (Chess, Starstruck, Jersey Boys) as the quintessential Elle Woods made famous by film actress Reese Witherspoon, directed by Danny Folpp (Beauty and the Beast, Chicago), musical direction by Alex Rigby (Young Frankenstein, Be More Chill, Chicago) and Maddie Watts (Chicago, Spongebob), with choreography by Jody Miller (Chicago, Be More Chill, Young Frankenstein) and lighting and sound by Jacob Harwood (Chicago, Oliver!, Shrek, Young Frankenstein) and the team at JH Productions. Despite the fun, light-hearted comedic tone of this production, importantly, it has a message that Jody wants to deliver.

"This is a show with a message of female empowerment. It's about femininity, power, sexual harassment and a woman who won't accept the status quo – she'll fight back, and she'll do it in heels if she wants to. She's in charge of her life, making her own decisions and doing it on her own. I really relate to that, and I want to tell that story to other young women.

"It's also a show with never a dull moment. There are no tears to cry. It's light-hearted, fun and unapologetically upbeat. This is exactly what we try to do at Chookas. We want our art

to be fun, uplift people, and have them walk out of the theatre still laughing."

Legally Blonde the Musical is the first show to run without the cloud of covid hanging over it for this fledgling production company that began its theatrical journey during the pandemic. Their first production, 21 Chump Street, was held at the Royal Exchange to a fifty per cent capacity audience due to covid restrictions; Be More Chill went on just two weeks outside of lockdown, and only seventyfive per cent capacity was allowed; Chicago and Heathers the Musical were risky due to performers coming down with covid. This time around, there is a full complement of understudies and less risk.

In June, this dynamic theatre company will be presenting Company at Newcastle Theatre Company. Company is a musical comedy which explores love, relationships and the struggle for intimacy – the original production was nominated for a record-setting 14 Tony Awards.

"Company is one of Sondheim's greatest works, and bringing it to the Newcastle

stage is an honour. The cast and crew are working tirelessly to make this one of the best productions our city has seen. This darkhumour comedy musical has stood the test of time and will have Newcastle audience's laughing until the very end. It's a characterdriven piece that we are modernising – giving it a fresh new look."

A local cast of Newcastle performers has been assembled, with musical theatre artist and Australian Idol Finalist Marty Worrall (Oliver, Chess, Rock of Ages) leading the show as the chronic bachelor Robert. In keeping with Jody's passion for telling the right stories and sharing opportunities, this production also features a strong female cast, who show the protagonist how women influence his life.

The creative team is once again headed up by co-director Danny Folpp (Beauty and the Beast, Chicago), with Jody Miller (Be More Chill, Chicago, Heathers) also co-directing. Musical Director is Mathew Gallimore (Merrily We Roll Along, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), and Choreographer is Maddie Baillie

(Chicago, Ideation, Trevor), with Jacob Harwood once again on lighting and sound design and tech being run by JH Productions.

"One of the great things about this show is that everyone can see themselves on stage. There is guaranteed to be a character that you resonate with, which will have you questioning your life choices. We've gathered up a fabulous cast that I'm so excited about. Working with Marty is a dream come true. I used to vote for him on Australian Idol when I was in primary school!"

There is no doubt that the future looks bright for Chookas Entertainment with Jody Miller at the helm and that the Newcastle theatre industry stands to reap the benefit of her energy, commitment to excellence and a keen desire to give back. Chookas is committed to producing an Australian written show every year, and she's looking forward to presenting Back to the 80s at Warners Bay Theatre in September. The extremely popular piece was written by Neil Gooding, who she has known since she was a child. The rest of the season will include Clue at the Civic Playhouse in November and Pippin at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, Speers Point, in December.

Jody has worked hard at CONDA to help set and achieve the organisation's strategic objectives, which are all about accessibility and resourcing – sharing knowledge and resources between operators and creatives and building up the industry. She's also passionate about helping youth who may not have access to performing arts and training and runs youth ambassadorships for both Chookas Entertainment and CONDA.

"I'm passionate about bringing the joy of theatre to as many people as possible. Theatre is a wonderful energy exchange between the audience and the performers. There is nothing else like it. If they're not used to attending theatre, I would encourage everyone to get out of their comfort zone and get along to support a local show. It doesn't have to be one I've produced; any local show deserves the support."

Featuring a cast of 65 students across grades 9-12, the SPCC Senior School musical is held every second year. Irresistible Classical ‘Hits’

Coming to Newcastle in June

In the first half of the 19th century, music moved out of the palaces of Europe and into its living rooms, with an explosion in publishing houses making the latest works accessible to everyone from princes to paupers. As with so many developments in music, Beethoven was at the centre of things: his Septet was a huge critical and popular success, and demand for the sheet music was a significant boost to his publisher’s business. And it is easy to see why: it takes all the easy charm of a serenade or divertimento,

two hugely popular formats at the time – think Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik – takes them further and adds some exquisite original writing.

The piece proved an impossible act to follow; for the next fifty years, only Schubert, with his Octet, wrote any large mixed chamber work of significance. That is, until Louise Farrenc’s Nonet in 1849. Farrenc was a renowned pianist – a child prodigy, an accomplished touring soloist, and professor of piano at the Paris Conservatory. Yet, ironically,

her most famous piece does not feature her chosen instrument. Instead, scored for a quartet of strings and a wind quintet together, it is full of rich textures and intricate scoring, demonstrating her irrefutable compositional skill.

These two much-loved composers - and two of their favourite ‘hit’ works - feature in the upcoming ‘New Perspectives’ concert by the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra - coming to Adamstown Uniting Church on Wednesday, 7 June at 7pm.

Unfortunately, Australian cities are not built this way, so it is up to organisations such as the Commercial Fishermen’s Co-Operative (the Fish Co-op) and the Newcastle and Glendale Farmer’s Markets to provide the places where the makers and providores meet the local community to enable the purchase of fresh produce. Buying local reduces the carbon footprint of the purchase, is fresher, healthier, and critical to our own food security. And did we mention it tastes better too?

The Fish Co-op has over 130 fisher members and has outlets in Swansea, Wickham and Tacoma. Unless you catch your fish yourself, there is no other way to find fresher fish in our region.

“We sell over 192 different species throughout the year, and 98% of it is Australian,” said CEO of the Fish Co-op, Robert Gauta.

“We only import things that we can’t get here, such as Alaskan Crab.

“The Newcastle market has been operating for 19 years now, so it’s well established,” said Kevin Eade, Director of NSW Farmers Market. “We operated at Speers Point Park with the Lake Macquarie markets, but we couldn’t get an agreement to operate weekly. So when Stocklands offered to build a purpose-built cover, we made the move.

“The number of stall holders is growing every week. We’ve got a new Wollombi beef supplier who’ll be adding chicken and ducks, Stanview Beef from Gloucester, Twenty-4 Cheesecakes, Vadyr Beef Jerky from Cameron Park (who can’t keep up with demand!), Tilse’s Apples and Apple Truck Cider from Scone (the last of the Hunter apple growers) and Peterson’s Wines have also joined us at Gateshead.”

Kevin recommends buying in season and batch cooking at home, freezing for convenience. In season now are pumpkins, cauliflower, bananas from Woolgoolga or give the Russian garlic a try from Kempsey. Coming up for Mother’s Day, the Salvation Army will be onsite wrapping gifts; there’ll be card crafts for the kids and delectables to buy for Mum.

1. Scoop the balls of really cold gelato ice cream into a small glass or dessert glass.

2. Heat up in a small saucepan Espresso Liqueur.

3. Serve the alcohol in shot glasses on a plate beside the gelato ice cream.

Exploring Australia and Saving Lives

Roslyn Meier and Kylie Forbes work together at Hunter Imaging and are set for the adventure of a lifetime when they join a convoy of teams this month in the Shitbox Rally, Australia's largest independently run fundraiser for the Cancer Council, travelling from Newcastle to Townsville, via Betoota over seven days from 12 May.

Both Roslyn and Kylie were born and bred on the Central Coast and now live in Gwandalan, commuting into the Newcastle area each day for work. Location and workplace are not the only things these two ladies have in common, though. Both have recently lost their mothers and other family members to cancer and found their friendship deepened through their shared loss.

Roslyn Meier has a long medical career, having worked in neurology, as a vet nurse and now as a business development consultant for Hunter Imaging. She is passionate about what she does and feels a great sense of pride that she is contributing to medical solutions for everyday people.

"Health has always been a focus and a passion for me," said Roslyn.

"I get a wonderful sense of achievement out of knowing that the work I do plays a small role in the treatment people receive in their

healthcare and has a positive impact on their healing journey.

"In 2014, I lost my mother to ovarian cancer and a few years later, my sister-in-law Kim, who I was very close to, to brain cancer. The loss had a profound impact on me. I heard about the Shitbox Rally and thought it would be a fabulous way to contribute to cancer research and to feel like I was doing something positive."

Shitbox Rally is a challenge where participants are required to drive cars worth $1,500 or less across Australia via some of its toughest roads in the outback to raise money for cancer research through the Cancer Council. This remarkable event has raised more than $33 million since the first rally in 2010. To participate, each team must raise a minimum of $5,000.

Box Rallies (Shitbox Rally, Mystery Box Rally and Cancer Cruise) Founder James Freeman, who lost both of his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other, said, "Shitbox Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts. This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary.

"After 13 years of rallying, we are still bringing out some 'firsts' for this route. It's the first time we are starting from Newcastle, and the first time we will have Betoota as an official

stopover. As always, the outback delivers with a truly spectacular route in place, incredible scenery and hospitality. As with every rally, I am always excited to show our participants the wonders of the places we travel through and to. The incredible experiences along the way and the challenges associated with driving a $1,500 car on these remote outback tracks.

"Teams not only pull together to help each other through the challenges of the rally itself but also help and support each other through openness, mateship and camaraderie from people that have gone through similar hardships with their own cancer stories."

The rally operates as a ballot, and participation is not guaranteed. Roslyn watched with interest for a number of years, even attempting entry even though so many people told her it would be way too difficult for her. She had planned to do it at one point with her sister-in-law prior to her passing. During this time, her work colleague and friend, Kylie Forbes, lost her own mother to bowel cancer.

Kylie has worked in the Accounts Department of Hunter Imaging for ten years. When her mother passed, she discovered that she needed the company of people like Roslyn,

who understood her pain because she'd been through a similar experience.

"It's something that never goes away," said Kylie. "It's always there under the surface. Watching someone you love suffer changes you. It's a horrible disease. When Ros mentioned the rally, I was on board straight away."

The two friends found that their shared experience and 'cancer talk' took on a new energy once they had entered the ballot to participate in the rally.

"It's definitely helped with our healing process," said Roslyn.

"We talk cancer in our line of business every day; it never goes away. As soon as we realised that this year's rally would be leaving from Newcastle, we felt like it was a sign. We decided we'd have a crack at it and put in our application. It went quiet for months, and then when we heard that we'd been accepted, we were so excited.

"Everyone wanted to know how we were going to do it. And it's important to us that we do it ourselves. Just two girls hitting the road together, going on a big outback adventure. And because I originally planned to do it with Kim, it's kind of bittersweet for me."

The two biggest challenges the women faced, however, were raising the funds to

qualify and finding a car worth no more than $1500 that was still ok to drive under such trying conditions. Hunter Imaging stepped up as a major sponsor, which is why Roslyn and Kylie's team is called the Hunter Imaging Tribute Team. Other companies the ladies work with through Hunter Imaging have also stepped up with large donations and support, but it's still been a hard slog.

"I really believe that the economic downturn has slowed down our fundraising success," said Roslyn. "People are really feeling it at the moment."

It's taken almost twelve months to find a car, and it was looking increasingly likely that the ladies would have to forfeit their place. Only recently, they finally nabbed a 1999 Toyota Camry via Facebook Marketplace. The seller received 88 messages within the first five minutes of posting, with many people promising to pay more than the car was worth. The owner marked it as sold and then took the time to read all the messages he'd been sent. Roslyn, in an act of desperation, left a message that told the story of why they were trying to purchase it, and it was this that produced the successful bid.

"Now that we've got the car, we're in a mad rush to prepare," said Roslyn.

"We've been having lessons in how to change tyres and fuel filters, general maintenance and

repairs, and I'm getting exceptionally nervous. Of course, a big support team is on hand to help with anything that goes wrong, but we won't know anyone. Also, you can't take too much stuff, and we have to camp every night. It won't be glamping, that's for sure! You have to be able to leave your car and join another one if yours can't be repaired, so you can't bring too much gear.

"I'm worried that we'll break down and be unable to fix it. And then, the advice is that when you travel on these rutted outback roads, you are better off travelling at speeds of about 80 to 90 km per hour so that your car sort of skims across the rutted surface! That seems way too fast to me."

This is where the difference between the two friends becomes more apparent. Kylie has more of a 'she'll be right, mate' attitude than Roslyn.

"I'm so excited; I'm not nervous at all," said Kylie. "We'll meet so many new people, and I love camping. Ros will be the fraidy cat in her swag; getting her out of her comfort zone will be fun. I couldn't do this without her, though. We're good for each other.

"I've never been to the outback or even to Townsville. And we're both excited to be travelling through Betoota. We've read The Betoota Advocate and heard that there is a population of just three people!"

Although more nervous than her friend, Roslyn is also excited about the places they will visit on their travels.

"We'll be experiencing parts of Australia in a totally unique way," said Roslyn. "

"What other time will you jump into a junk box, hit the road and sleep under the stars? We'll be travelling through indigenous communities, tiny outback towns and seeing the wildlife. Of course, we're mindful that we have to be respectful of these communities and small towns, but I do think we will see amazing things and meet wonderful people."

Participation in the rally has been a healing journey for the two friends, changing the focus from loss to something positive they can do. It honours their loved ones, but more than anything, it contributes to the future of cancer research, helping the patients of tomorrow and building a legacy that they, and their supporters, can be proud of.

On Tour With the Kid

Thankfully with the advent of technology, that has changed. The kid's best friend has moved to two different states since they were at school together, and as I write this, I can hear his big booming voice coming through the iPad because they have been able to stay connected. It really is a beautiful thing.

THE LOST ART

I was a fan of The Wonder Years when I was a kid. It seemed like the perfect snapshot of middle-class suburban life in the late 1960s and early 1970s. There was the occasional interruption of real-life adult problems, with

the Vietnam War raging in the background, but mostly it was sweet innocent teenage problems. With landlines and snail mail the only form of contact, it also meant if you were a kid and your parents moved, even to the next town, you

Certainly, during Covid lockdowns, that technology was the one thing that kept people sane. We were all so thankful to be able to see other human faces and have a conversation with anyone outside the four walls we were all stuck in. However, as things have slowly but surely returned to normal, I wonder if we have all become too comfortable with being connected without the actual connection. I have a friend who is a prolific serial dater. She is on all the apps, and to keep me entertained, she often sends me highlights of the profiles she comes across and initial conversations with what can only be described as the worst communicators on earth. Don't get me wrong, you can't expect Keats-like prose from everyone, but the occasional complete sentence would be a start.

CHLOE O'SULLIVAN

I know the quality people crave most is honesty –a sign of emotional intelligence. So when my friend calls me to tell me she matched with someone whose profile reads something like "no single mums", you could almost think that it's good that they know they are not good around children and are transparent about that (so that you know). But that feeling goes out the window when it's followed up with the line "because if you are not good enough for the guy that knocked you up what makes you think I want you."

On the one hand, I guess you should be thankful that they are a red flag just flapping around in the breeze, and you don't have to waste your time getting to know them before finding out they are the worse human on the planet. But on the other hand….what the hell!

Don't even get me started on the unsolicited photos of anatomy. Inside an established relationship with boundaries and trust, that

could be considered fun and flirty. But when you have yet to exchange a hello, it's creepy.

I laugh to myself because the internet, which in some instances can bring so much joy, has also made us lazy. Can you imagine sitting at a coffee shop waiting to meet someone, and they arrive with their pants off? No. Just NO.

I have also seen friends, male and female, come out of relationships with partners who thought their own needs were all that mattered. In that case, the question needs to be asked, why the hell are you in a relationship? If you want someone just there to serve you, pay a personal assistant and leave the poor bugger looking for an actual connection alone. Communication and seeing others as fully formed human beings seem to be lost arts. Without putting in any effort, it has made everything black and white with the only two options yes or next. The joy is in the grey area.

PETS OF THE MONTH

Spice is typical of her breed - super active, alert and intelligent. She has spent her time in care running, playing and rumbling with her sibling and foster carer’s dogs, so she would love a home with another friendly dog. Spice is being crate trained, doing well at her toilet training and learning basic commands. Spice would most suit a family as she enjoys playing with children and would need to be able to sleep inside and be part of the family. Spice is ready for her forever home!

Gregory Grey (Greg for short) is a 12-month-old boy who is on the hunt for a place to call home. This young fellow is super chilled and follows you around like a dog, wanting to be where you are and enjoying laying at your feet and being close by. He is equally happy to entertain himself, playing with cat toys, chasing and pouncing on them. Gregory would most suit a home with teenagers as little is known about his past. He is such a good boy, and someone will be fortunate to have him in their lives.

STRONG HUNTER MINISTERIAL REPRESENTATION

The region's peak industry body, Business Hunter, has welcomed strong Hunter ministerial representation in the New South Wales government, with five out of 22 Cabinet Ministers in the Minns Ministry appointed from the region.

Business Hunter CEO Bob Hawes commended the new state government for increasing diversity on its front bench, with gender parity achieved for the first time in NSW and significant regional representation.

"Achieving gender parity in New South Wales is a historic step, and the Hunter has played a significant and proud role, contributing four of the eleven women who collectively represent this wonderful milestone for our state and for the nation," said Mr Hawes.

"The inclusion of regional voices also bodes well, and five Cabinet Ministers from the Hunter

is extraordinary and more than double the last time Labor was in government, despite holding a similar number of seats," said Mr Hawes.

Herb Urban, a local business that creates sustainable smart gardens in partnership with the City of Newcastle, is proud to announce the opening of their newest project, "The Little Green," a new vertical smart garden in the heart of the city at Hunter Street Mall.

BUSINESS AWARD NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

Nominations are open for the 2023 Lake Mac Business Excellence Awards, highlighting local businesses big and small. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said nominations for last year's awards were up more than 20 per cent on previous years, "and I'm keen to see this momentum continue".

"Feedback from applicants was that it was a great exercise to stop and really focus on their

business – what they had already achieved and what they were planning for the coming year," she said.

"It doesn't have to be a million-dollar enterprise. Lake Mac is home to thousands of small businesses doing amazing things. Together, they are the beating heart of our economy."

While all applications are carefully assessed by a panel of expert judges, this year, a new People's Choice Award will be chosen based on the highest number of public votes.

“According to recent research, about 40 per cent of 25- to 34-year-olds expect to call on the ‘bank of mum and dad’ to achieve home ownership, with many likely to utilise a parental or family guarantee,” Ms Sanghera said.

“However, guarantees come with potential positives and negatives for both parties, which means everyone needs to understand the commitment they are undertaking.”

2. A parental or family guarantee can potentially mean avoiding or reducing the cost of Lenders Mortgage Insurance.

3. There is no cost to the guarantor – as long as the mortgagor always makes their mortgage repayments.

Soaring rents are motivating more young people to become first home buyers, with many needing help from “the bank of mum and dad” to purchase a home. But it’s vital that everyone understands the commitment they are making before proceeding, according to one of Australia’s most awarded mortgage brokers.

Zippy Financial Director and Principal Broker Louisa Sanghera said most parents want to be in the position to help their children achieve home ownership, but they must go into the agreement with their eyes open.

“In essence, a parental or family guarantee is when a parent or family member uses the equity in their home as security against a loan taken out by their child or family member. So, for example, if a mum or dad has $500,000 equity in their home, this equity can be used as security against their child’s mortgage,” she said.

“Of course, there are pros and cons with using this mortgage facility, which I always recommend everyone understands thoroughly before proceeding with this option.”

PROS:

1. The borrower doesn’t need as big a deposit as they are using their parents or family member’s property as security.

4. Once the mortgagor has built up enough equity in their home or has paid off enough of the mortgage to get to an 80 per cent Loan to Value Ratio (LVR), the guarantor can be released from the agreement.

CONS:

1. If the mortgagor defaults on their mortgage, the guarantor – parents or family member – is liable for the entire sum that they’ve promised to cover, which is the amount over the 80 per cent LVR.

2. The guarantor’s ability to take on further loans for themselves or to guarantee others is diminished during the guarantee period.

3. The guarantor may be putting their own home at risk if the mortgagor defaults on their home loan, and they are unable to repay the initial sum guaranteed.
