EDITORS...

It’s not like we need an excuse to head to the vineyards for a weekend, but this month, we have one with one of the Hunter region's most iconic food and wine events, the Lovedale Long Lunch, celebrating its 30th anniversary.

The unique progressive-style lunch brings together top chefs and six premier Lovedale wineries over two days, treating visitors to delectable food, exquisite wines, and live music amidst picturesque vineyards.

Drawing over 10,000 people annually, the event has been refreshed with a new vintage-inspired brand, limited tickets for a more bespoke experience, and changes to improve the overall visitor experience. With an estimated 2,000 overnight stays, the economic impact extends to accommodation providers, local suppliers, and other regional businesses. Plus, it’s loads of fun! Read more on page 14.

Starring a cast of 20 senior Hunter Drama students who play over 100 different characters, this month's production, Love and Information, is sure to resonate deeply with today’s youth. Exploring the complexities of human connection in the digital age, it explores the ways in which love and information intersect and shape our lives. Read more on page 12.

Also, this month is Sleepout for Soul, which features a party-like atmosphere with live music, fire pits, food trucks, and activities. Participants form teams and get creative with their "campsites," sleeping outdoors to raise awareness. With a wide range of attendees, from families to sports teams, the event fosters community connection and engagement – all for a good cause.

The Sleepout for Soul began in 2015 to raise funds for Soul Hub, a Newcastle charity supporting vulnerable, homeless, and isolated people. What started with just 18 participants raising $18,000 has become a local favourite, with over 350 participants raising over $200,000 in 2023. Organisers hope for even more participants and funds raised at this year's event on 17 May. Find out how you can do your bit on page 41.

For locals and visitors to Hunter Valley Wine Country, autumn is the season for breathtaking transformation and vibrant activity. So, maybe plan a staycation or book a few lazy lunches and long tastings in the coming months. Check out our Special Feature on page 34 for some inspiration. Enjoy!

Youth Navigates Love and Information in Kaleidoscopic Drama

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

IMAGE PETER STOOP PHOTOGRAPHY

“Where hearts connect, minds collide, and data reveals the secrets of the soul."

Hunter Drama presents the kaleidoscopic and inventive Love and Information by Caryl Churchill, 22-25 May at the Civic Playhouse. Starring a cast of 20 senior Hunter Drama students who play over 100 different characters, the play is deeply relevant to today’s youth,

exploring the complexities of human connection in the digital age and the ways in which love and information intersect and shape our lives.

A popular drama text for stage six students, the play takes the form of seven sections comprising several short vignettes. With sharp wit, humour, and a keen understanding of the human experience, Churchill's work is captivating and thought-provoking.

Love and Information is directed by Hunter Drama Artistic Director, James Chapman who is an award-winning theatre maker and whose

directing credits include The War of the Worlds, She Kills Monsters, The Shawshank Redemption and Madagascar Jr.

“This piece deals with themes of love and relationships in the digital age, the information overload of social media and how our young people navigate this world,” said James.

"It’s about the paradox of connection and isolation that we all experience, and it’s relevant to everyone because love and information are at the heart of the human condition.

“The form of the play pushes boundaries and offers up unique opportunities for artist and director collaboration. The script doesn’t dictate who says what, when, or in what order. Our performers have been able to put their own stamp on the message of the production and what the audience takes away from the experience.”

The colourful, modular set reflects the kaleidoscope of emotions that the characters experience. Hunter Drama encourages all young people over the age of 12 and their parents to come along to explore the themes of this production, which may stimulate important discussions between teens and their parents and provide plenty of laughs.

Tickets are on sale from the Civic Playhouse at www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

Major Psychological Thriller GASLIGHT Ignites Newcastle Stage

Set to be one of the most talked about performances of 2024, Gaslight, a modern adaptation of the 1940s suspenseful thriller by Patrick Hamilton and starring Geraldine Hakewill, Toby Schmitz and Kate Fitzpatrick, will perform at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre from 19 to 23 June as part of a national tour.

The highly anticipated play, set in 1901 London but adapted by Canadian writer/ performers Patty Jamieson and Johnna Wright in 2022, is directed by Lee Lewis and produced by Rodney Rigby for Newtheatricals, who also produced Come From Away, and Queensland Theatre.

Hakewill’s Bella Manningham is a young wife who seemingly has it all - a lovely home and a comfortable upper-middle-class life. Her housekeepers, Elizabeth, played by Fitzpatrick, and Nancy attend to her and help run the household. Her husband, Jack, played by Schmitz, appears attentive and loving. So why is Bella on edge?

Despite his doting appearance, Jack is hiding something. He keeps disappearing in the evenings …and after he leaves, Bella hears

strange sounds in the house. Is Bella losing her grip on reality? Or is something more sinister afoot?

The much-used word, ‘gaslighting’ — psychologically manipulating people into questioning their own sanity — draws its origins from the play, in which the household’s gas lights flicker and dim in the evenings when Bella is alone, causing her to question her sanity.

Geraldine Hakewill is one of Australia’s best-known theatre and television performers, starring in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Fury, Baal, The Real Thing, Disgraced, Chimerica and Julius Caesar for the Sydney Theatre Company, Peter Pan for Belvoir, which toured to New York, and Macbeth for the Melbourne Theatre Company. Geraldine’s television credits include Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, Wakefield and Wanted, for which she was nominated for a TV Week Logie Award.

stage in Amadeus for Red Line opposite Michael Sheen.

Lures Locals for

30-Year Celebrations Lovedale Long Lunch

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER

IMAGES SOURCE LOVEDALE LONG LUNCH

One of the Hunter region’s most iconic and longest-running food and wine events, the Lovedale Long Lunch, is marking its 30th anniversary from 18 to 19 May, and everyone is invited to the celebration!

The Lovedale Long Lunch, a unique progressive-style lunch, is a standout event in the Hunter Valley. Over two days, it brings together the region’s top chefs and six of Lovedale’s premier wineries. Guests are treated to a delightful combination of delectable food, exquisite wine, and live music, all enjoyed alfresco amidst the picturesque vineyards.

The six host wineries, restaurants and caterers for the Lovedale Long Lunch 2024 are Allandale Winery and Twine Restaurant; Emma's Cottage Vineyard and Esca Bimbadgen Restaurant; Gartelmann Wines and The Deck Café Lovedale; Saltire Estate and Hunter Valley

Catering; Sandalyn Estate and Peterson House Restaurant Cuvée; and Tatler Wines and Tatler Tapas.

Matt Dillow, owner and chef of Gartelmann Wines and The Deck Café, Lovedale, has been involved with the Lovedale Long Lunch since 2010. He loves working on the event and the opportunity it gives his staff to showcase what they can do.

“We are thrilled to celebrate our 30th anniversary by hosting a fabulous celebration for our guests, presenting some of the Hunter’s finest food and wine at some of our best boutique wineries. We’ve been doing this since 1994 and have all the facilities and the formula fine-tuned so guests don’t have to worry about a thing except having a great time amongst the vineyards.”

From its humble beginnings in 1994 with a few trestle tables on the lawn, the Lovedale Long Lunch has grown into a highly anticipated event on the region’s food and wine calendar.

Drawing over 10,000 people annually, it has not only put Lovedale on the map but also established it as a sub-region of the Hunter. This evolution is a testament to the commitment of the Lovedale Long Lunch committee, as Riley Hodgetts, a committee member and Marketing and Events Coordinator at Allandale Winery, one of the event's founding wineries, explains.

“The event has always had the primary objective of showcasing the wonderful food and boutique wineries of the Lovedale area so that visitors will return outside of the event itself to explore our offerings more fully,” said Riley.

Following the pandemic pause, there was a changing of the guard on the committee, and it provided an obvious opportunity to take a hard look at whether or not the event was meeting our objectives and visitor expectations. The result was a rebrand and refresh that we’re all very excited about.

“Our new brand has a vintage flavour with pops of contemporary colour and is much more

14 READ ONLINE

visually engaging. It was developed by Sneddon & Co who understood we wanted to honour our past but move forward with renewed focus on our primary objectives. We’ve also listened to our visitors and made changes to improve the overall visitor experience.”

Riley refers to changes that include the shift to a more bespoke, high-quality food and wine experience, with limited tickets and a reduction in the choice of wineries to two out of the six per visit rather than three, cutting travel time and the number of people on the roads trying to get from one place to another.

“We’ve refined the existing concept without losing its heart,” said Riley.

Matt Dillow agrees, saying, “We don’t want the event to be so big that people can’t enjoy it. Our set-up improves every year, and this year, we’ve looked at the speed of service, the smooth running, and the overall visitor experience—ensuring no one has to line up for long periods. It will be more inviting and relaxed, and we’re pumped to be doing it.”

It takes an estimated one hundred people per winery to staff the event and manage all the logistics – that’s around 600 people.

“There’s a lot of infrastructure to set up,” said Riley.

“Road signs, landscaping, marquees, toilets, not to mention the preparation of the bar and restaurant. There are only about three months every year when we don’t have to mention the words ‘Lovedale Long Lunch’; the rest of the year is spent planning and preparation.

“The knock-on effect to the rest of the region is enormous and we’re very conscious of it.

Our neighbours have to put up with a lot of traffic for the week

leading up to the event and then the week of pack-down afterwards. But it’s all about making Lovedale succeed, and that includes the businesses that aren’t directly participating in the festival.”

Indeed, accommodation providers, produce suppliers, other cellar doors, and tourism operators all benefit from the weekend's influx of visitors, with an estimated 2,000 people staying for one or more nights.

“One example of how it affects other local businesses is the fact that most of the chefs try to use local produce,” said Matt.

“Binnorie Dairy is literally down the road, and we use at least 120 kilograms of their award-winning cheeses. Multiply that by a likelihood of six for each of our venues, and that’s an enormous impact on just one local business. It feels great to be able to offer that support.”

It's widely agreed that most visitors to the Hunter Valley cellar doors and restaurants are primarily from Sydney and further afield, but this festival bucks that trend quite significantly. About 75% of our festivalgoers are local, from the Greater Newcastle, Hunter Valley and Central Coast areas,” said Riley.

“It’s an anomaly that we think stems from the fact that it falls into the events and festivals category. Even though we’re only 35 minutes from Newcastle since the bypass was completed in 2014, and Lovedale is literally the gateway to the Hunter, locals generally don’t think to pop up for the day and enjoy a cellar door visit or lunch at a restaurant unless it’s a special occasion.

“Because it’s close enough for a day trip, people tend to put it off, but an event like this draws people in.”

A GRAND Evening of Ballet

The Grand Kyiv Ballet of Ukraine returns to Newcastle's Civic Theatre on 29 and 30 May with a magnificent double bill of Forest Song and Don Quixote. After amazing audience responses and standing ovations in 2023, this highly anticipated engagement is not to be missed.

Forest Song, the legendary Ukrainian showpiece, tells a profoundly moving love story between a fantastical forest creature, Mavka, and a man, Lukash. Set to stirring music by Mikhail Skorulskyi; it's filled with complex choreography that beautifully captures nature and true love's perseverance, reflecting Ukraine's own longing for peace.

Then, the flamboyant Spanish romantic comedy Don Quixote takes the stage. The courageous but troubled Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza embark on a quest for love and glory, encountering gypsies, bullfighters, lavish costumes and breathtaking dancers in this beloved ballet set to an inspiring score.

Founded in 2014 by former Ukrainian National Opera principal Oleksandr Stoianov, the Grand Kyiv Ballet has earned international acclaim, touring worldwide and regularly performing for royalty and dignitaries. Despite the challenges of war, they have even done charity tours across Europe and the Americas, a testament to their dedication to sustaining their art.

Directed by Lauren Harvey, part of the creative team for Billy Elliot the Musical and Aspire, with musical direction by ARIA nominee Dan Wilson, the show is based on the book by Julian Fellowes with lyrics by Glenn Slater. The iconic Lloyd Webber score has 14 new songs created for the West End and Broadway productions, as well as the original songs from the movie, some of which are becoming rock-solid standards guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet.

Passion Ignites in Opera Hunter's Sizzling Production

Opera Hunter is proud to produce George Bizet’s Carmen at the Warner’s Bay Theatre this July.

With a cast of over fifty performers and an orchestra of twenty-two players, this promises to be a spectacular production. In a first for Opera Hunter, they will be performing the opera in the original French, with surtitles.

Why is Carmen one of the world’s most performed operas?

First and foremost, because of the music. Bizet’s score is a masterpiece of Romanticism. He brings passion, great drama, tenderness, joy, and above all, dance! There are Spanish dances, the Cuban Habanera, the Spanish Seguidilla, the triumphant march of the Toreador’s song, and even a tarantella. Rhythms are the threads connecting everything, overlaid with some of the greatest melodies in opera.

The story of the opera is driven by love, obsession and jealousy. It is high romance, with characters who will give up freedoms and

comforts for excitement and passion. Carmen herself defies stereotyping. She is a woman who lives for love and who expects that her lovers will embrace love without compromise. Army Corporal Don Jose abandons his fiancé, Micaela, to follow his passion for Carmen – but their tumultuous affair is doomed from the start.

Director Stewart McGowan says he wants to emphasise Carmen’s independence.

“Carmen and the women who surround her refuse to be passive. They are strong and independent and seek to celebrate their identities,” he said.

“Even Micaela, sung by Marian Moroney, takes risks. In her attempt to win back Don

Jose, who has fled to a smugglers’ camp in the mountains to be with Carmen, she travels into the mountains alone. Her beautiful Act 3 Aria is full of the pathos of disappointed love.”

Christopher Bearman OAM is the conductor, while Mercia Buck OAM is the Music Director. Anthea Harrington and Ellen Malone will play Carmen, and Sam Elmi and Raphael Hudson will play Don Jose.

The opera opens on Wednesday, 10 July and plays until Sunday, 21 July, at the Warners Bay Theatre. Tickets are available from www.stickytickets.com.au.

Whodunit?

Agatha Christie's 'The Mousetrap' Snares Newcastle

WORDS DI VON ESSEN

After a local woman is murdered, the guests and staff of Monkswell Manor find themselves stranded (during a snowstorm, of course) in the remote, Victorian-era estate that has recently

been converted into a guest house. It soon becomes clear that the killer is among them, and the seven strangers grow increasingly suspicious of one another. A police detective, arriving on skis, interrogates the suspects: the newlyweds running the house; a spinster with a curious background; an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef; a retired army major; a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift; and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone.

If this tale sounds familiar, you’d be right! It’s the plot of Agatha Christie's famed The Mousetrap, which will be performed at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre from 11 to 25 May Reprising their roles from last year’s triumphant sell-out capital city tour are Helpmann Award winner Alex Rathgeber (Anything Goes, The Phantom of the Opera) as Giles Ralston, the husband of the new owner of Monkswell Manor; legendary performer Gerry Connolly (Cyrano de Bergerac, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui) as Mr Paravicini, an unexpected visitor at the manor; and one of Australia’s most renowned stars of stage and screen, Geraldine Turner (Wicked, Present Laughter), as the seriously unpleasant retired magistrate Mrs Boyle.

Hannah Fredericksen (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Dream Lover) joins the cast as

Mollie Ralston, the young owner of Monkswell Manor. Chris Parker (Mamma Mia, Sunner Rain) plays retired British military officer Major Metcalf. Miranda Daughtry (The Bleeding Tree, Three Sisters) will play Miss Casewell, who remains mysteriously aloof from the other guests, while Timothy Walker (Before the Meeting, The Great) is Detective Sergeant Trotter.

The Mousetrap is directed by Australian theatre icon and former Artistic Director of the Sydney and Queensland Theatre Companies, Robyn Nevin AO. Robyn has played leading roles at all of Australia’s major theatre companies, in London's West End and the US, as well as in films such as The Castle, Emerald City, Careful He Might Hear You and The Matrix films. Costume design and associate set design are by Isabel Hudson, and lighting design is by Trudy Dalgleish.

For over 70 years, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap has kept millions of people from every corner of the globe on the edge of their seats. It is the genre-defining murder mystery from the best-selling novelist of all time … case closed! Can you solve this world-famous mystery for yourself? Not without a ticket! Australia's Hidden Riverside Gem Tranquil Tumbulgum..

WORDS DI VON ESSEN

When Cyclone Jasper ripped through Far North Queensland in December, it devastated the local tourism industry. Roads were cut, airports closed, and holidays were cancelled (including our long-planned trip to the Great Barrier Reef). As local families cleaned up after the deluge, other families looked to relocate their annual holidays elsewhere.

Had it not been for Jasper, though, we may

of Tumbulgum (pronounced Tum-bowl-gum – not Tumble-gum, as we soon found out!) in northern NSW. Tucked away in the lush Tweed Valley, the tiny, charming village of Tumbulgum offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle. This hidden gem, nestled along the banks of the Tweed River, invites visitors to slow down and savour the simple pleasures of a quintessential Australian country town.

Tumbulgum is where the Tweed and Rous Rivers intersect and is said to take its name from a local indigenous word for ‘meeting of

the waters’. Our hastily booked, ideally situated Airbnb (another little gem) was back from the water but still had views of the picnic tablelined riverbank and the houseboats bobbing lazily offshore.

News of heavy rain on the Gold Coast felt irrelevant until we arose the following day to houseboats moving downriver at speeds that would have kept a water skier upright.

We consulted the locals for the low-down.

“Houseboats re-called”, we were informed. “Park your cars on the bridge” was the other piece

of local wisdom we received – a tip we were very grateful for as the picnic tables became submerged and water crept across the road.

One thing to know about Tumbulgum is that floods are a frequent occurrence. Another thing to know is that no amount of water will deter locals from the Tumbulgum Tavern, where we also became locals for a week. Affectionately known as the ‘Tumby-Pub’, the venue exudes old-world charm, was consistently packed (where did all those people come from?), and the food was not only excellent value – but really, really good.

With walls that could tell a tale or two thousand, the fish mounted on the verandah is undoubtedly just one such story from the days when the pub was the epicentre of the local timber trade. A half-size model of the 800lb

Groper caught in the river in 1828 using a meat hook and a cow's hind as bait for fears that it would take a small child from the riverbanks seems like a tall tale—but we are assured it's true.

Make sure you save a night away from the pub to enjoy The House of Gabriel's gorgeous surroundings and delicious wood-fired pizza.

No visit to the area would be complete without a lazy afternoon at Husk Farm Distillery. Home to the notorious Ink Gin, the distillery is also Australia’s first agricultural rum distillery and boasts an impressive range.

Inspired by Caribbean rum culture, distiller Paul Messenger and his family embarked on creating a plantation distillery with a

vision of creating a uniquely Australian agricole rum. Now eight years in, they've adapted specialised cultivation and distillation methods, resulting in a rum that captures the taste of the local sugar cane farming area.

In late 2016, they began building an expanded distillery with a cellar door and barrel house to meet demand. Visitors can now enjoy distillery tours, flight tastings, and a delicious al fresco dining menu—a great way to while away the day!

While you’re in the area, don’t forget to take a tour of Tropical Fruit World and be amazed at the vast array of fruits you never knew existed! Allow plenty of time to take a tractor tour of the farm and visit the fruit market. It doesn’t get any more fresh, healthy, and tasty than buying farm-fresh local produce directly from the grower, and most of the fruit you can see in the store has been freshly picked that morning.

If you get tired of putting your feet up, enjoying the tranquillity of nature, and unwinding, Tumblegum is a mere 25-minute drive to the glittering lights of the Gold Coast and all of its attractions.

Tumbulgum is a truly tranquil hidden gem where time seems to slow down, and life's simple pleasures take centre stage.

JACK SQUAT

Your

Sober Sidekick!

WORDS DI VON ESSEN

If your New Year’s resolution was to reduce your alcohol intake in 2024—and that resolution is already well and truly out the window—don’t despair; Dry July and Sober Tober are just around the corner!

While we fervently applaud those who are able to quit drinking cold turkey, for those who prefer a more gradual transition or reduced, responsible drinking habits, the team at Tamburlaine Organic Wines has released a new alcohol-removed range that aims to make the transition smoother.

What is alcohol-removed wine?

Tamburlaine’s ‘Jack Squat” range is the exact wine from their organic vineyards used in regular alcoholic wines, with an additional process at the end of production to gently remove the alcohol after the wine is fermented. This ensures you get all the goodness of organic Tamburlaine wine with only trace amounts of alcohol (about as little as a lemonlime and bitters). Designated drivers rejoice!

“We’re going to be perfectly transparent here - these beverages do not taste exactly the same as their alcoholic counterparts due to alcohol’s inherent role as a flavour component,” says Chief Winemaker Mark Davidson.

“However, if you delight in the tannins, juiciness and/or tartness of lovingly fermented grape varietals, you’ll certainly find something to like within our Jack Squat series.”

If you’re curious about the range and don’t know where to start, visit the Cellar Door at 358 McDonalds Rd, Pokolbin and ask to try it before you buy it. If you’re too far away to visit, jump online and check out two of our faves.

Lifted white flowers and citrus notes. Fresh and balanced acidity levels frame pear and crisp apple flavours.

IMAGES SOURCE SOUL HUB

The Sleepout for Soul began in 2015 with just 18 participants raising $18,000 for Soul Hub, a Newcastle-based, grassroots, volunteerdriven, local charity specialising in supporting vulnerable, homeless, mentally unwell, socially isolated and addicted people. Fast forward to 2023, and over 350 participants raised in excess of $200,000 in what has become a local favourite on the city’s fundraising events calendar. Organisers are hoping that the number of participants and funds raised will once again grow at this year’s event, to be held 17 May.

Soul Hub relies on Sleepout for Soul as its major annual fundraiser and invites the Newcastle community to join in the fun at the Bolton Street Carpark, where the atmosphere is party-like.

The General Manager of Soul Hub, Matthew Ortiger says that the event has evolved from its humble beginnings to an event that creates community connection and engagement and that has a broad appeal.

“It’s a real party atmosphere,” said Matthew. “We take over the whole car park, which overlooks the harbour. We gather on the roof to

dance and listen to live music (this year’s band is the MacReid duo). There are fire pits, kid’s activities, food trucks, coffee vans, auctions, and a chance to meet the Soul Hub family and learn more about what we do. It’s a wonderful sense of community.

“It attracts a wide range of people, everyday mums and dads with their kids, school groups, youth groups and older couples – a big mix. People set up their ‘camp’ in the four levels below the rooftop, some with tents and blow-up beds, others doing it the authentic way and sleeping on cardboard with just a sleeping bag.”

Registrations are still open to Sleep Out with family, friends, neighbours, yoga groups, sports teams, schoolmates, teachers, workmates, employers and just about any group you can imagine, and people are encouraged to get creative. If you can’t join the main event at Bolton Street, it’s ok to organise a group sleepout at your clubhouse, school or community hall, business premises, camping ground, or wherever you have permission to lay a sleeping bag – just remember to send photos to Soul Hub and tag @SoulHubNewcastle on social media.

The process is simple. Participants register online (visit www.soulhub.org.au), and an

individual fundraising page will be automatically set up for you. You have the option to start or join a team, and you can personalise your page with images, messaging and fundraising goals. Share it with your family, friends, and colleagues and start fundraising. If you don’t wish to fundraise but still want to participate, you can simply make a donation.

Martin Bigg originally came to the Soul Hub from the Defence Force, where he served 20 years between the Navy and the RAAF. He was introduced to the hub in 2019 as a way to help with a mental illness triggered by PTSD that he was dealing with. It wasn’t long before Martin began helping others as a volunteer, and he now works four days per week as a Guest Support Coordinator. This year will be his third Sleep Out with his wife Tamara and his 12-yearold daughter Aaliyah.

“It’s a fantastic experience,” said Martin.

“It’s great for the kids. Last year, my daughter brought two of her friends with her, and they had a blast. We bring our esky with food and drink, but we also enjoy the hot food from the food trucks.

“Whilst it’s not really an authentic experience of homelessness, it does make the young ones more aware of what life can be like. They

learn that things can go wrong and people can make bad choices, and I think that’s important. The kids did fundraisers at their school last year, pyjama days and the like. I’m proud of them.”

Martin has changed the lives of many of the Soul Hub guests in his work as a coordinator, often just by enjoying a coffee with someone, having a laugh, providing them with a listening ear, and pointing them in the right direction.

“I’m like the class clown. We have a great laugh and lots of fun banter. After my own experiences with mental health issues, I understand it more and have a real drive to help others on their journey.”

Soul Hub was the vision of Life Church and was formally established in 2003 as Soul Cafe. Dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable people in our community, it does more than serve up meals, although, in 2023, its 265 volunteers served up over 63,900 meals.

“The people we support are called guests,” said Matthew.

“And they can be anyone, from all walks of life. We don’t judge. We serve breakfast every day and lunch four days a week. We’re here to offer sustenance, a friendly face, and many other types of essential support, including haircuts, laundry, legal and medical services, and drug and substance abuse programs—we do whatever we can, with whatever we have, for whoever walks through our door.”

The people who do walk through the door can come from all over Newcastle and the Lake Macquarie area. Many of them struggle with addiction or mental illness, but others are socially isolated, experiencing housing insecurity or homelessness.

“In many instances, it’s the social connection that is the prime motivator for our guests,” said Matthew.

Recently, Soul Hub moved to a new purposebuilt facility in premises donated by the Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation – providing rent-free accommodation for ten years at 437 Hunter Street Newcastle. This means that with only one full-time member of staff and five parttime members of staff, running costs are kept to a minimum, and donations go to where they’re needed. There is no government funding. Soul Hub is a fully community-funded charity –funded by Novocastrians for Novocastrians.

For people wishing to get involved in the valuable work that Soul Hub does, there are many ways to do so, from being a major sponsor to making a cash donation, donating an item for auction or becoming an active participant in a fundraising event such as this month’s Sleepout for Soul.

Enjoy a fun, family-friendly event and learn more about the extensive work of Soul Hub

supporting Newcastle’s most vulnerable. Soul Hub is way ‘more than a meal’. Soul is a ‘Convergence of Help’.

AS MATTHEW SAYS, “EVERYONE’S WELCOME BECAUSE NOBODY’S PERFECT, AND ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.”

And as one of the vulnerable guests said about Soul:

“Soul to me means family. If you are someone who’s never been here before, a volunteer, a donor or a guest, the minute you set foot through the door, you’ve become part of a family that cares and looks out for each other without judgment. It’s a family you feel has got your back not only for now but forever.”

This inspirational level of passion is common among the volunteers, the guests, the staff and the supporters of Soul Hub as it serves a vital, otherwise largely unmet need in our community. It’s not too late to register and fundraise for this year’s Sleepout for Soul. Simply visit the website www.soulhub.org.au and follow the prompts. All funds raised enable the organisation to provide the many services our community needs and improve access to an increasing number of support agencies. By joining in the fun on 17 May, you will have the chance to see and hear first-hand how this passionate community organisation transforms the lives of so many, and you can be a part of the solution at a time when more and more people are finding themselves vulnerable to the challenges of modern life.

Register now at www.soulhub.org.au and participate in something that is guaranteed to nourish your heart and your soul.

RESEARCH PROJECT AIMING TO PROTECT OUR SQUIRREL GLIDERS

City of Newcastle (CN), the University of Newcastle and FAUNA Research Alliance have joined forces to investigate ways to protect Squirrel Gliders in the Lower Hunter.

The marsupial is at risk of local extinction due to habitat loss, damage, and fragmentation, as well as contending with heat stress, vehicle collisions, and predation by introduced species.

Intensive monitoring by a University of Newcastle team has confirmed the presence of Squirrel Gliders in Blackbutt Reserve and Jesmond Bushland, with a thermal drone detecting body heat signatures of the animals hidden in the canopy.

Councillor Elizabeth Adamczyk said our Newcastle Environment Strategy, which aims to protect and regenerate natural systems, will contribute to long-term conservation outcomes for the Squirrel Glider.

"Squirrel Gliders play a vital role in keeping our bushland healthy by feeding on plants and invertebrates. They are nature's pollinators, helping to sustain our Eucalypt forests, and they also regulate the number of insects such as caterpillars, cicadas, and beetles," Cr Adamczyk said. Let's join hands to protect these important creatures.

“Newcastle's bushland areas are simply an invaluable refuge for our fauna, including our threatened species, and are irreplaceable in light of the documented biodiversity emergency we are facing locally, nationally and internationally."

Wildlife conservation scientist Dr Ryan Witt from the University of Newcastle, who is leading the research effort, said Squirrel Gliders are one of the city’s last remaining threatened marsupials.

Newcastle’s own clinical trial centre

Every new medication/treatment has to pass through a series of clinical trials, a process which can take several years, before it can be approved for wider use. By volunteering for a trial, you will be helping to improve future treatment options.

Our ethically approved clinical trials are run by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses. We provide comprehensive medical care throughout the trial at no cost to participants.

It is only through the willingness of clinical trial volunteers that we can advance medicine and continue changing lives.

“Importantly, our research uses multiple monitoring methods, including nest box monitoring, pipe trapping, thermal drone surveys and genetic analysis to develop a baseline understanding of the status of the Squirrel Glider populations living in Blackbutt and Jesmond bushland," Dr. Witt said.

As part of the Natural Connection program, the first of CN’s Squirrel Glider events will take place on Thursday, 2 May, when CN staff and University of Newcastle researchers hold an evening information session at Wallsend Library to share details of the Squirrel Glider research project.

Other ways residents can help include planting Squirrel Glider food trees and shrubs, keeping cats inside at night, leaving water out for local wildlife in hot weather and calling 13000 WIRES or Hunter Wildlife Rescue on 0418628483 if they find injured wildlife.

SURVIVE YOUR NEXT RIDE WITH FREE MOTORCYCLING WORKSHOPS ACROSS THE HUNTER

Port Stephens, Cessnock, Maitland, MidCoast and Central Coast Councils, are joining forces to promote motorcycle safety through a series of free workshops to be held over several weekends in May and June, for new and experienced motorcyclists.

Survive the Ride Association of NSW’s Dave Tynan said the workshops enable motorcyclists to collaborate on decision-making techniques and adjustments to riding habits that improve personal safety.

“We focus on the little decisions we all make on the road and how slight changes can result in a safer and more enjoyable ride,” says Mr Tynan.

The Centre for Road Safety statistics for 2018-2022 show that motorcyclists in the Hunter Region were involved in 11% of crashes, with the 50-59 age group most at risk.

“If you’re new to riding, an experienced rider, or getting back on your motorbike after a break, these workshops are the perfect opportunity to refresh your knowledge to manage risks on the road and contribute to creating a safer community of local riders.

For more information about the workshops, visit www.pscouncil.info/ motorcycle-workshop or contact the Council’s Road Safety Officer on 4988 0527.

On Tour With the Kid

The Unworthy Ticket Holder

Let me start by saying Limbo-The Return, the new Spiegeltent show currently playing in Newcastle, is spectacular. The talent in that cast is breathtaking. The combination of the music and the physical skill is amazing. If you haven't already seen it, run, don't walk and make sure you see it before the curtains close on 5 May

To the booth full of people who sat behind us, lets chat.

As a group, you got tickets, dressed up, and found your way to Civic Park that night. I assume that if you are bright enough to put your own pants on without assistance, then can we also assume you are smart enough to realise the difference between a live performance and watching a movie at home in your lounge room? From your behaviour on the night, it's not clear that's the case.

To help you out, if you are home watching, let's say, The Muppet Movie, and you are loud, drunk, sloppy and yelling out racist comments thinly disguised as a compliment, then the only people you are offending is your family, who are already fully aware, you are a bit of a jerk. If you are doing that at a live show, you are not only annoying all the other patrons who have paid good money to be in the audience, but you are also disrespecting performers who have spent years mastering their craft.

The question that has to be asked is, how entitled are you? The staff asked you nicely several times to keep it to a dull roar, but yet you continued. We all had to hear every word of your conversation—a conversation in which nothing you said was so earth-shatteringly important that it couldn't have waited the 80 minutes that the performers were on stage.

The kid, who is not old enough to vote yet, knows that she could burn the house down and be in less trouble than if she said something racist. The fact that she had a visceral reaction to your comments and said something as she passed your table on the way out reassures me that I have raised a good human. I wonder what you think your behaviour says about you?

For the performers, I hope that all of your remaining shows are filled with Newcastle fans and fellow performers who know your pain, appreciate your effort and are the audience you deserve.

For the unworthy audience member, if you didn't understand all of the above, let me be more concise. Next time you are at a live show......shut the hell up. Newcastle is better than this.

As an Event Planner, I sadly had a similar experience at an event I was running two weeks later. I am thrilled to say this was not a

Newcastle local, so it’s obviously a nationwide issue for a certain kind of person. After being spoken to by security and then asking to “see the manager” (ugh) and speaking with me, she just couldn’t understand the fact that her paying for her own ticket didn’t entitle her to ruin the experience for everyone sitting in earshot of her.

Although you have to love Novocastrians. During our conversation, she said, “We aren’t bothering anyone”, to which there was a cacophony of responses from the hill saying, “Just move, would ya?” “You have been bothering us all game”, and a couple of other comments too colourful to repeat. I turned back, determined not to smile because I am, after all, a professional.

Most venues and events have terms of admission and a code of conduct. If you can’t follow instructions from security, that is game over. People need to understand at that point that the fact that you have purchased a ticket doesn’t entitle you to ruin the show for everyone else that your responses of ‘I deserve a night out, you know” and “I’m related to so and so” aren’t as compelling as you think they are. At that stage, you are still there because of the grace of the staff, not because you are in the right.

Have you Considered a Testamentary Trust Will?

We’re all familiar with the operation of a simple will, where a person’s assets are left directly to their nominated beneficiaries. However, in recent years, as awareness has grown, people’s financial affairs have become more complex, and the risks of leaving an inheritance directly to a beneficiary personally have become wellknown; we’ve seen an increase in testamentary trust wills.

The phrases ‘testamentary trust’, ‘testamentary discretionary trust’, TT, and TDT are all just ‘lawyer speak’ for a trust set up in a will that starts when the willmaker dies. They are very similar to a family trust (more technically known as a discretionary trust), but

a testamentary trust is established by a person’s will and remains dormant, ready to start when a person dies.

Testamentary trusts are one of the most powerful estate planning tools available. Here’s a snapshot of what you need to know about testamentary trusts:

• Testamentary trusts may save your family tax after you die

• Testamentary trusts offer protection of an inheritance from divorce and bankruptcy risks

• Testamentary trusts are not just for complex situations or high-wealth

• You only get one chance to access the fantastic estate planning benefits of a testamentary trust – it MUST be in your will when you die

• Testamentary trusts are not administratively burdensome

• Testamentary trusts only start working if you die – the benefits don’t start until you die, but neither do the (minor) compliance requirements

An effective testamentary trust should have many people who can potentially benefit from the assets in the trust (the technical term for these people is beneficiaries), and each beneficiary’s entitlement should be at the complete discretion of the Trustee.

This discretionary nature of the trust is what makes the trust so powerful for asset protection. Because none of the beneficiaries own the trust assets and their only right is to be considered by the trustee, it is very difficult for someone to argue that the assets of the trust belong to any one of the beneficiaries.

What are the key benefits of a testamentary trust?

• Relationship protection

• Protects immature beneficiaries

• Income tax flexibility

• Rule from the grave

• Defers tax for overseas beneficiaries

• Bankruptcy protection

If you’re considering a testamentary trust as part of your estate planning, get in touch with our Estate Planning Team today.

Dentistry with a Warranty

My team and I regularly see patients who have suffered a broken filling. Yes, it can happen— and it even happens to me. What concerns me, however, is that many of the patients who present with broken fillings have broken the filling a number of times (sometimes two or three times)—and even more concerning is that they have been charged again for the filling on each occasion!

I can only suspect that these problem fillings have either an engineering problem or an adhesive problem. Irrespective of whether it’s engineering or adhesive, the problem belongs to the dental operator.

I’ve been caught out placing fillings in situations where the filling simply had inadequate strength. As a dentist, I take a

keen interest in the engineering that I impart on my dental treatment because this kind of engineering is not only conservative of tooth structure but also has the potential to save teeth from even being touched.

When the team at Belledental suffers such a setback, we carefully examine the engineering and attempt to reduce loading on the broken restoration and/or increase its thickness (strength). We consider this kind of setback an opportunity to learn about how we deliver dentistry and invoke our warranty program. Any fillings that break within five years are replaced or repaired without question.

Because the engineering associated with dentistry is not “straight beams”, much of

our treatment recommendations come from experience gained over 35 years doing this kind of dentistry…so if a circumstance arises where we have underestimated the strength of restoration required, we will upgrade the restoration to a new suitable restoration for the difference in cost between the original restoration and the cost of the new restoration -this is our “NO PENALTY” solution for restorative situations that don’t quite work out.

So, if you are struggling with fillings that break repeatedly or are just looking for some dentistry that is durable (but carries a warranty… just in case), contact Belledental, where fillings are our specialty, with a 35-year pedigree.

May Horoscopes

ASTROLOGER KIM FAIRMINER ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

May is a busy month marked by unexpected changes in fortune – likely positive ones.

STAR OF THE MONTH

TAURUS

21 APRIL – 20 MAY

May is the best time of year to be a Taurus! Gifts, feasting, luxuriating like the God/dess you are. This is all essential when the planets are partying in your sign. Make hay while the Sun shines, though. With so much positivity available, you’d be remiss to let this good fortune slip through your fingers. As they say, use it or lose it – and the lucky flow will begin to ebb in the last week of the month. Make covert career moves early in the month, then focus on your big life goals after the New Moon.

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Your curiosity is piqued as the month begins. So much for Gemini’s reputation as superficial; whether you are embarking on a travel adventure, committing to a course of study, or at a turning point in a publishing project, you are ready to risk it all and dive in deep. Your supporters, who believe in your potential, are ready to back you up if needed.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

Wishes come true for soft-bellied crabs. Take the lead on a simmering situation in your professional life early in the month and steer it in the appropriate direction. Snap-snap your formidable claws, if necessary. With that taken care of, you can fully enjoy the pleasant surprises offered by the New Moon. Hang out with your favourite friends and find ways of supporting each other.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

Are you ready to strut your stuff on the career ladder? It’s a delicate dance, but luck is on your side, so you can afford to take a professional risk. Self-belief is the key to your success, and there is someone special in your life who will remind you of your capabilities. If world domination is out of reach, you'll settle for public adoration.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

You are captivated by the wondrous expanse of the world this month and long to fill your passport with stamps and your soul with wisdom. The planets suggest you may be lucky enough to find a customs official with an inkpad or encounter an ancient tree in the forest. Seek, and ye shall find – possibly via a Google search.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and one of your key partnerships looks positively combustible. Whether it all goes up in flames or smoulders seductively like a femme fatale is up to you. (Ugh, I know, right? Pesky free will.) It’s important for you to know the sexy undercurrents are real and not a figment of your rom-com-fed imagination.

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

Home and family commitments are a focal point as May begins, asking you to activate and exercise your power and responsibility. You’ll get a lot done if you prioritise efficiency. Be careful in the kitchen; slow down to avoid burns and cuts. Partnerships look surprisingly dreamy, and the New Moon promises an exciting new chapter unfurling in your most important relationship.

SAGITTARIUS

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Feeling a little fried by all the (fabulous) projects and activities you have on the go? Too much good stuff is still too much, and this is your reminder to relax more by removing a few things from your plate. Delegate what you can to someone else and find techy solutions to free up valuable time and mental space. You’re likely to notice increased creativity and enthusiasm for your hobbies.

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

You are in serious creator mode this month. Inspiration is beaming down on you, rising up through your firmly grounded feet, and coming at you sideways. It’s propelling you, and you may feel like you’re walking a few inches off the ground. The New Moon suggests you need a new outlet for all this fertile flow, so take up a new hobby, find a new online haunt, and play some fun games.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

Foundational matters are where you will flourish – whether you are landscaping a garden, exploring your ancestry, or beautifying your home. You are playing a key role in directing your family unit and will lead them to a successful milestone by the Full Moon. Don’t take things overly seriously, though. Delays are inevitable – perhaps even helpful – and there’s still plenty to celebrate.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

The New Moon opens your mind to an influx of nourishing concepts downloaded from the ether. These messages will follow spiritual, but also potentially digital, pathways, so let go of preconceived notions of divine messaging. It is everywhere, in all forms, at all times. And speaking of no place to hide, the Full Moon is at the top of your chart. Step up and step out in your professional life. Even if you don’t want to, you will be seen. Only you will know that your truest magic remains safely hidden deep within.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

With your ruling planet, Mars, rocketing through your sign, you are on fire – in a good way! Very early in the month, watch for escalating bravado and mischief in group situations. You can be the one to speak up and rein things in. The New Moon is auspicious for fresh financial opportunities and tapping into lucrative networks. Squirrel away some of your profit and head off somewhere exotic for a spiritual writer’s retreat or full-moon forest bathing session. Treating yourself to a luxurious yet mindful outing supports your mental well-being. True wealth is good health.

HUNTER HOMES & Lifestyle

Winter Home Prep: Tackling the TO-DO LIST!

As the cooler months approach, savvy Newcastle homeowners know it's crunch time to get outstanding home maintenance jobs squared away before winter arrives. From roof repairs to plumbing fixes, there's a long list of niggling tasks that need addressing to ensure your home is shipshape for the chilly days ahead.

At the top of many lists is tree maintenance - a job best left to the professionals at Altitude Tree Lopping Services. Their experienced arborists offer a range of services, including tree lopping, hedge trimming, stump grinding, and wood chipping. With stormy weather on the horizon, having overgrown trees and branches properly trimmed is crucial for preventing damage to roofs, windows or parked vehicles.

While the tree crew is onsite, it's also a great time to schedule them to grind away any unsightly leftover stumps and clean up wood chip piles left from previous tree work. Altitude's team has the proper equipment to safely and efficiently clear your property.

For over 15 years, the proudly family-owned and operated D&J Miller Constructions has been steadily growing under founders Daryl and Joann Miller. During that time, the company has expanded to include a highly skilled team, all sharing Daryl and Joann's commitment to producing top-quality, cost-effective workmanship across Newcastle, Maitland and the Hunter Valley regions.

Whether you need a minor home repair or have a major renovation planned, D&J Miller Constructions brings a dedication to craftsmanship honed over their 15+ years in business and are always happy to provide quotes.

Your house is your pride and joy, but years of dirt, grime and air pollution can make even

the finest home look shabby. Salt spray, sandy dirt, mould and moss are other common issues faced in Newcastle. Mould, green and black can affect surfaces inside and outside your home, creating an unsightly and unhealthy atmosphere. Maintaining the cleanliness of your house can be a big job, especially with today's busy lifestyles, and some tasks are really best left to professionals like Gary from High Pressure Cleaning.

When hard surfaces become dirty they are not only unsightly, but they can become dangerously slippery. Such surfaces present the potential for serious injury. No one wants accidents around the home or business due to a slippery surface that could leave you open to paying compensation claims.

With the exterior shored up, it's time to turn your attention inside the home. Few things are more miserable than plumbing problems in the depths of winter, so now is the ideal time to have Cardiff Plumbing stop by. Their licensed plumbers can inspect for any leaks, clear

choked drains, and ensure everything from the hot water system to taps and toilets is running smoothly.

No one likes to see unsightly cracks and holes in walls, and if you’ve sprung a few leaks in recent storms, it might be time to get Bill out to solve your Gyprocking problems. Bill is happy to take on small jobs and provides pensioner discounts.

Of course, perhaps the most important prewinter chore is changing the batteries in your smoke alarms or replacing detectors that have reached the end of their life span—so get out the step ladder and keep your family safe.

Don't let your home's to-do list become a stressful slog this winter. Instead, lean on Newcastle's quality local trade businesses to efficiently check off those lingering jobs. Check out our Trades and Services page or visit our Local Directory at www.intouchmagazine. com.au/localbusinessdirectory. A little time invested now will let you settle in for a cosy winter.
