women’s professional surfing tour calendar. The Port Stephens Toyota Pro and the Taggart Women’s Pro will attract over 200 surfers from countries including Australia, the United States, Hawaii, Brazil, Japan, South Africa, Tahiti, New Zealand, France and western Europe.

But it’s not just about the pro-surfers. What separates Surfest from many other professional surfing events is the emphasis placed upon community and grass roots surfing competition with events such as the Orica Team Challenge (see page 6).

In the past few years, Surfest has stretched its wings to run events in all three local government areas that cover the Hunter coastline – Newcastle, Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie.

The Wandiyali ATSI Indigenous Classic will offer the nation’s biggest purse for indigenous surfers. Aboriginal surfers from as far away as Western Australia hone in on Merewether to renew friendships and try and take home some of the $20,000 on offer. Indigenous surfers have always been welcome at Surfest and Wandiyali’s commitment through the provision of such attractive prize money cements a connection stretching back around two decades.

SURFEST 2016 SURFEST Newcastle Australia originated in 1985 when Newcastle’s movers and shakers were desperately trying to rid the city of its “grime-ridden” industrial image and showcase the beauty of Newcastle’s beaches and surf breaks to people from outside of the region.

Those visionaries developed the BHP Steel International as Surfest’s first incarnation and the richest professional surfing event in the world at that time. Yes, that’s right – it was the richest professional surfing competition on the planet.

It's just over three decades since those heady days and Surfest has since become Australia’s largest surfing festival. The 31st Surfest (there was no event in 1991 due to the reorganisation of the professional surfing tour) in 2016 will host 11 different surfing events attracting more than 700 surfers from around two dozen countries, all competing to get their names etched into the record books.

Surfest has always attracted the world’s best surfers because of the city’s unique hospitality along with a distinct February possibility of north-easterly swells coming in from either cyclonic activity in the Coral Sea or from low depressions sending southerly swells up through ‘pinball alley’ – the oceanic area between Tasmania and New Zealand.

Mark Richards honed the dance that would see him win four world titles – more than any other male competitor in the world, except for the ‘Floridian freak’ and 11-time world champion Kelly Slater (who, incidentally, claimed a Surfest crown in 2004).

MR – or the mayor of Merewether as locals admiringly refer to him – was named at Surfing Australia’s 50th anniversary as the most influential Australian surfer from 1963-2013.

Until 2006, Surfest set up its HQ at Newcastle beach, but on finals day, due to massive southerly swells smashing into the eastern seaboard, the event was shifted to the iconic and revered Merewether. More than 10,000 people rocked up to check out the action during the finals dished up on Super Surfest Sunday. It was pure magic –the natural elements fired and the planets aligned and it was then that organisers decided to relocate the event’s HQ permanently.

Such a decision was not without a bit of argy-bargy, but the stretch of ocean from Merewether to the Cliff has proven a reliable swell magnet even when there is little commotion in the ocean. Surfest also has the ability to pack up and go mobile, as it did when it made the history books back in 2013 by becoming the first pro-surfing event in the world to run inside a harbour. When a massive low-pressure system saw the stretch breaking out-of-control, reigning world champ Joel Parkinson showed his utter class by dropping into two-metre barrels inside the entrance to Newcastle Harbour. And what of the Surfest champions? The list of those who have stood atop the Surfest dais reads like a Who’s Who of world surfing champions. Gold Coaster Mick Fanning might be a three-time world champion, but he has also won Surfest on three occasions. Goofy-foot powerhouse Occy has won twice (with a 12-year gap between trophies), as has Tom Carroll. Women champs include Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons while Rebecca Woods and Pam Burridge match Fanning’s effort with three trophies each adorning their shelves.

Surfest organisers think that the event is more than a great surf competition – it is a celebration of a city and its people and their special relationship with Australia's beach culture.

Most of all Surfest organisers are thrilled that they can provide the people of Newcastle and the rest of the world – through an event webcast – the opportunity to see how this former engine room for steel production has reinvented itself to treating surfers to non-stop surfing action in one of Australia’s most beautiful cities.

Surfest Newcastle Australia is backed by major sponsors Destination NSW and Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota. Kim Burton from Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota has invested more than $1.5 million in sponsorship in a relationship with the event stretching back 15 years.

Logistically, with the event largely reliant on the ongoing commitment and contribution of volunteers, every Surfest remains a significant challenge. But it’s a challenge that Newcastle, a city renowned for giving people a shot and encapsulating the Australian ethos of a fair go – would not have any other way.

Surfest Newcastle Australia 2016 gets underway with trials at Birubi Beach on January 31 where contestants will compete for a wildcard berth into the Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro. Well, we made it! Christmas and New Year are done – and we survived! The team at intouch magazine have launched themselves head first into 2016 to bring you this first issue of the year.

Tina Arena, recent ARIA Hall of Fame inductee and all-round lovely lady will be gracing the stage in the Hunter Valley in February when she arrives to support Simply Red, along with fellow Aussie songstress Natalie Imbruglia. We are honoured that Tina was able to spare some time to talk with us before the tour kicking off.

Now in its fourth year, the Orica Team Challenge will be hosted by Northside Boardriders Club at North Stockton beach and will run from Friday 12 February – Sunday 14 February. With a $10,000 purse up for grabs, the event is expected to draw around 100 of the state’s most competitive surfers with organisers planning for approximately 20 teams to take part in this unique format competition.

Northside Boardriders Club spokesman Paul Smart says the unique format encourages a social aspect to a very competitive event. "The past three years have seen the event grow in reputation and attract teams full of surfers with impressive records. Last year the waves were terrific and so was the surfing and everyone involved got to make a whole lot of new friends.

"All competitors taking part in the Orica Team Challenge love the unique team format.

The team atmosphere can really push performance," he said.

The competition sees teams consisting of a maximum of five surfers –including at least one junior surfer under 18-years-of-age – and a manager. Each team selects three competitors to surf in each round and must include a junior surfer. Teams surf a minimum of two rounds before facing elimination rounds.

Eleven is Arena’s second release in as many years and follows hot on the heels of 2013’s platinum-selling Reset album and national tour, which was the singer’s first release of original English language music since 2001’s Just Me. In between, Arena wrote and recorded two albums in French, and released two much-loved volumes of covers, titled Songs of Love and Loss.

She also became a mother for the first time, celebrating the birth of a cherished son, Gabriel, with her partner Vincent Mancini in 2005.

As with many things in her life, Arena said making her “comeback” album and the rapid follow-up release were all about “timing” – and feeling she had “something to talk about”.

“After I’d lived and felt like I’d accumulated enough material to have something to say I decided to write Reset,” she said.

“I just didn’t really feel before that I was really interested in writing anything, I just didn’t feel like it was the right time for me. It’s about timing for me.

“Reset was a really beautiful project and we all had a lot of really good fun with it so it was an excellent way to get back on the bike and just go ‘I can do this again’.

“And the process (for Eleven) was fantastic. Reset had only been done about a year or so before I started writing this one, so I was kind of into the swing of things.”

Pulling no punches with

Tina Arena isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind. Whether it’s calling out radio stations for ignoring older female artists, or telling the producers of a reality television program to keep it real or count her out, Arena doesn’t hold back.

But there’s no doubt Arena is the real deal; a top-selling artist not only in Australia but around the world, with 11 studio albums, including two written and performed in French, seven ARIA Awards, two World Music Awards - and even a Knighthood (of the Order of National Merit, presented by the President of France for “contributions to French culture”).

In November, Arena’s already impressive list of accolades was capped off with her induction into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame – placing her alongside Aussie legends such as Cold Chisel, The Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, Yothu Yindi and Kylie Minogue (who flew in for the ceremony to present her friend with the honour).

That rhythm kicked up a notch when Arena was invited to attend the 50 Songs In Five Days international songwriting workshop in Sydney during late 2014, where she met Evermore frontman Jon Hume for the first time.

An instant and electric rapport between the two saw them quickly pen the song ‘Unravel Me’, which later became the opening track on Eleven.

Arena said the song is about the challenge of scratching beneath the surface - about being “swept up and twisting in the insanity and complication of life, and wanting someone or something to simplify it... to unravel that web in which we can all get caught up”.

It was the start of a collaboration between the pair that resulted in seven songs from the 11-track album, including its lead single, ‘I Want To Love You’, which truly showcases Arena’s epic vocal abilities.

Recorded across five cities (Sydney, Melbourne, London, Paris and Stockholm), Eleven is a beautiful, complex, state-of-the-art collection of emotive, electronica-based songs.

“I had a really good time making the record (like I did Reset), but I think there’s a level of sophistication, another few layers that Reset doesn't have. It’s stepped up a notch.”

Another of the key collaborators on Eleven, fellow Australian songstress Kate Miller-Heidke, helped produced two of its highlights according to Arena – the jazzy-tinged ‘Not Still In Love With You’ and gospel-flavoured ‘When You’re Ready’.

“I’m very happy with the balance of the record, I think this record’s got good balance, and I also really love my collaboration with Kate Miller-Heidke and Jon,” she said.

“They’re thematically pretty interesting, they’re stand-out tracks for me.

“A real change of pace on the album, this smoky blues song (‘Not Still in Love With You’) is all about being empowered and moving on from that ex that was just no good for you.

“It’s the ultimate revenge song, but there is a real sadness to it that I wanted to highlight. Is the song a revenge song, or about denying one’s true feelings... Not still in love? I’m not so sure.

“The other - ‘When You’re Ready’ - should be left open to the listener’s interpretation, but let’s say we all have personal

struggles and friends who have personal struggles, some of these things are tough to talk about or are socially taboo.

“This song is told from the point of view of a friend, not judging, just offering support and encouragement and understanding that life and love are very complex.

“It’s about acknowledging people can be strong and scared at the same time but not pressuring them to make any changes until they are ready to.”

Like the album itself, the collaboration with Miller-Heidke was all about timing.

“It was a session that was put together almost last minute because she happened to be in Europe and playing at the time so it was kind of fantastic timing,” Arena said.

“Kate is the full package, she plays, she sings, she writes, and she came in with very strong ideas.

“But she definitely comes in with her very decisive ideas, she knows what she wants, Kate, and that’s what I love about her, she pulls no punches.”

After four decades in the spotlight, Arena isn’t afraid to pull any punches either in her effort to keep things in her life grounded and real.

Her no-nonsense approach was evident as she told intouch magazine about the process involved in her appearance on the 2013 series of reality television show Dancing With the Stars, where she finished third overall.

“I think the first time the Australian public had actually seen me open up was Dancing With the Stars a couple of years ago when I went and participated in that,” she said.

“I was very reticent about it in the beginning. I was like, I’m not sure about this, this is TV, I’m not sure if I like where TV is going, it can be very misleading (says she that started her career on it!) But I’m no fool, I haven’t fallen off the back of the truck, I’m pretty aware of what goes on.

“So I was pretty strict with them and said, ‘Look, if you are able to depict me very openly and honestly I’m happy to participate “I’ve always liked her, I like her audacity and her very prickly in this venture. If you want to manipulate and have ulterior perspective, she’s a very honest woman who has a very healthy motives or an agenda, let me tell you, let me put it to you very perspective on life and philosophy as well. We had lots of notes clearly, I don’t want a bar of this’. to swap.

“Because it had been a long time since people had really seen me, who I am, what I had become, that show was a great opportunity (for me) and they (the producers) were true to their words, they honoured all of that so it was a very successful collaboration.”

The show was also an excellent opportunity for Arena to promote her comeback album and autobiography (both Reset and her memoir Now I Can Dance were released in the same month Dancing With the Stars went to air).

Since then Arena’s legions of Australian fans have had a number of opportunities to see the singer-songwriter live, including the critically-acclaimed national Reset tour.

And they will have a few more in 2016 when Arena takes to the road in support of Simply Red for a series of a day on the green events across Australia.

This will, of course, include a much-anticipated stop in the Hunter Valley at Bimbadgen. The show, on Saturday, February 20, will also feature fellow Aussie songstress Natalie Imbruglia.

Arena said she was looking forward to returning to the Hunter as part of a string of dates to promote Eleven, although she admitted the hardest part of touring was having to be away from her family including Gabriel, who is now 10.

Arena said she was no different to any other mum when it came to the struggles of having to juggle her “work” and her personal life – but she believes her devotion to family is also one of the secrets to her long-term success.

“My longevity (as a singer) comes down to my willingness to explore and think outside the box, absolutely. But it’s also my willingness to leave it behind too and not live and breathe it all the time and understand that you need to live; life does actually exist without me and quite happily,” she said.

“Focussing on other things and being a mum too and being a partner - it was very important to me to be able to learn how to do all that.

“I’m not superwoman. I’m a normal woman that is a major creative and that has the wonderful privilege of being able to do what I do.

“But I also realise that I am a mother to a 10-year-old little boy and he is the greatest achievement of my life.”

The 2016 IGA Newcastle Regional Show will be held on Friday, March 4th until Sunday, March 6th with some exciting new additions to the Show Program together with all the traditional favourites.

Agricultural competitions will be held, including, Stud Beef Cattle, Goats, Pigeons, Horse, Pony Club and Show Jumping Events. All Creatures Great and Small will be there, together with the ever popular Animal Nursery and Poultry Display.

Photography, Handcrafts, Cookery, Floral Art, Home Brewing and Rats and Mice will be returning, together with the Schools Scarecrow Competition and a new Pumpkin Challenge in the Agricultural Area.

On Friday, the Newcastle Championship Dog Show will be held at Hillsborough Dog Showground and the Model Trains Group will now be featured under the Grandstand. The exciting and always entertaining Sydney Psychos flyball team will again feature in the Agricultural Area, together with a Bush Skills demonstration.

Be prepared for some noise and traditional Aussie Rivalry when the Trackskill V8 Utes come to town. This will be the highlight of our Ring Entertainment and is sure to be a real crowd pleaser with its colourful Ford vs. Holden challenge. FMX Kaos Motorcross returns and you’ll also be treated to PBOZ. Traditional favourites such as the Tent-pegging, Hunter Campdraft Cup and Newcastle’s very own Super Hubert will also return to entertain the crowds.

In 1899, a committee was formed to look at the possibility of conducting an annual show in Newcastle.

Those involved in the enterprise were all prominent businessmen, including the then Mayor of Newcastle William Cann. Together they formed the first Newcastle and District Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Association.

The first event, a Sports Day, was held early in 1901. With “spectacular events such as an eight-man ladder and hose race, municipal tug-of-war, wrestling on horseback, tent pegging and Highland dancing and piping”, it proved an excellent first venture for the fledgling committee.

The first official Newcastle Regional Show was held on 17th May 1902. The Show was opened by Joseph Wood, Patron of the Association and the newspapers of the day hailed it as a “Splendid Success”. Judging was held in 19 sections including Poultry, Horses, Garden Produce, Flowers, Cookery Needlework, Wagons & Buggies, Painting, Drawing and Writing, Dairy Produce and Apiculture.

The Annual Newcastle Regional Show continued largely without interruption until 1916 when the Showgrounds were needed as a Military Camp for World War 1. There was another gap in 1919 due to the influenza epidemic which was raging around the world at the time. The Annual Show continued to be held through the Great Depression years, but as Newcastle Showground was again used as an Army Staging Camping during the Second World War, no shows took place during the years 1941 to 1945.

In the late 1980’s, innovations such as street theatre, themed buildings and site scraping elements were introduced. School excursions were initiated and stages provided to showcase the talents of our youth.

There can be no denying just how big this girl group was in its time. Through the 80s they delivered some of the biggest songs of the decade – many of which can still be heard on the radio.

Their album WOW! went to #1 on the Australian ARIA album charts and the girls toured Australia in 1989 as part of their World Tour.

In a notoriously flighty corner of a relentlessly transient industry, Bananarama continue to stand tall as a pop group who actually mean something. "I do think we stand for the same thing now as we always did," Sara says.

"We worked so hard to get recognition - it's never been something just handed to us on a plate or manufactured. It's a feeling we both have that there's still a drive to find the next door to open, the next song to write, the person to work with, the next concert to play."

Bananarama' was anything other than great because in pop, more than any other genre, it all comes down to whether your tunes are any good. It seems to still come so easily for Bananarama, masters of their own destiny and the reigning queens of UK pop.

In the 1980s, there were few pop groups, male or female, as big as Bananarama. Hailing from the UK, Bananarama were the originators of Girl Power, the first female band to write their own songs, take control of their own destiny and become International fashion and music icons.

Returns to Australia with Special Guests Pseudo Echo Belinda Carlisle returns to Australia in February for a national run of concerts, including a gig at Wests New Lambton on March 8th. The consummate performer, Carlisle has never stopped performing and has toured Australia numerous times to sold-out shows. Award-winning costume designer Bev Fewins and protege Kaswin Hunt have been working on costuming for the large cast since roles were announced following auditions in May last year. Over forty-five actresses auditioned for the title role alone!

To ensure the visual impact of the crowd scenes, Maxfield has assembled what is understood to be the largest cast in any staging of EVITA.

Newcastle Mission to Seafarers - The Mission assists sailors visiting the Port of Newcastle with a ‘home away from home’ at the Seafarers Centre at Wickham. Currently, over 40,000 seafarers visit the Port of Newcastle and over 13,000 use the services offered by the Mission each year, with transport to the Centre, shopping, banking, healthcare and social and spiritual support. The 2016 lantern walk will raise money for a new upgrade to the kitchen at the Seafarers Centre.

Celebrate Chinese New Year (Saturday 13th February) with an evening walk carrying Chinese lanterns around the harbour foreshore to Light up Newcastle and help our local Rotary Clubs raise money for the Mission to Seafarers and the Newcastle Maritime Centre.

Around the Honeysuckle Precinct, you will find Chinese lion dancers, dragons, dancers, musicians, singers, marching bands and choirs.

The Fort Scratchley guns will fire at 4pm to mark the start of the dragon boat races. The night ends at 9pm with The Fort Scratchley guns and fireworks.

Newcastle’s Maritime Centre - Money raised will assist the organisation to build a new entrance to its new public cafe on the harbour foreshore.

The getting help early bit is really important.

Again, to use the analogy – imagine you are driving along in a car and felt that something wasn’t quite right with the steering wheel or the brakes were squeaking or the engine was making a clunking noise. Would you just ignore it and hope it goes away?

I have been working in mental health for 15 years. As part of my role as the Director of the Hunter Institute of Mental Health, I have the pleasure of meeting and talking with people across the country – media organisations, workplaces, schools, health professionals and community groups. I get the privilege of hearing people’s stories and finding out about how their views about mental health and mental illness have changed over those years.

There would be no person living in Australia who has not been touched by mental illness or suicide; either because they have personal experience or because they have a family member, friend or colleague who has been affected.

More than ever before, communities are interested in and engaged with the issues. But sometimes our messages can get confused or be so narrow, that people don’t know what role they can play. We often try to scare people into action – hitting them with statistics and stories of when things have gone wrong rather than thinking about how we can encourage and involve people in our communities.

What I often hear from people is that mental health is a “specialist” area, requiring specialist input and action. And true, the treatment system does require specialists and those with training, but there is a lot we can all do for ourselves and those around us.

When I was 17 years old, I got my first car; a Datsun 120Y that my stepfather pieced together for me. I was so excited about that car and the independence it offered, but I was certainly no expert in cars and how to look after one. I had no idea about the mechanics and internal workings of a car nor could I build or fix one if you paid me a lot of money – yet it managed to run for many years.

Very early on, my parents taught me there were some important things that a car needed so it could run. Without them I wouldn’t get very far. I learnt a car needed petrol on a regular basis, or it would quite literally “run out of gas”. It also needed some other things that helped keep it on the road – oil, water, and well-treaded tires. As it turned out my Datsun also needed a little choke at the traffic lights on a cold morning.

I also needed some things – I required some skills, training and support from other people

to be able to navigate my way from point A to point B safely. And just like that car and the silver Camry I now drive, as human beings we also need things that keep us going and keep us well. So, you can think about the importance of keeping ourselves mentally healthy as being like keeping your car running and roadworthy.

What most people would do is ask a friend or family member for advice and then take it to a mechanic to check it out. Sometimes it could be nothing, but other times there may have been something more seriously wrong. It is the same with our mental health. The earliest point that something is ‘not quite right’ is the time to tell someone or seek out a service.

Being mentally healthy and living well is important to every single one of us. It’s about enjoying life and fulfilling your potential. It’s having the ability to cope with stresses and sadness and it’s about being connected to friends, family, community and culture.

And what if you were a friend or family member sitting in the car and you heard a clunk or a squeak from the car? Would you ignore it or would you say something? I’d suggest that most people would raise it with their family member or friend, with no expectation that they would know how to pop the bonnet and fix the problem.

It can be so easy for us to take our mental health for granted; to prioritise other things; to put it off until next week. But just like we can’t put off adding petrol to our car for another week, we shouldn’t put off our mental health till another time either.

But when it comes to noticing changes in the behaviour of people closest to us, people often leave words unsaid for fear of making the problem worse, or fear of not knowing what to do next. You don’t need to know how to fix the problem, but listening without judgement and helping a friend find information about what the next steps might be could make all the difference.

You do not need to be an expert or a specialist to play a key role in your own mental health and the mental health of those around you.

There are things we can all do for ourselves and for others to get them safely across bumpy roads or to enjoy the open spaces.

And remember to stop in and get a check-up along the road.

The Rise and Rise of Integrative Medicine

considering and treating the whole person and not just their symptoms.

There is no doubt that in Australia complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has become a more accepted and widely used form of healthcare with nearly two-thirds of Australians using some form of complementary medicine – often without disclosing this to their doctor. Patients with chronic diseases are also increasingly looking for healthcare outside the conventional health system.

"A comprehensive approach to integrative medicine involves more than simply adding a little complementary knowledge to the 'tool kit’ of the GP" explains Kath.

In essence, what appears to be occurring is a social movement featuring the increasing validity of CAM within the healthcare services of Australia and other countries that include the USA and the UK. CAM is here to stay and will continue to present challenges for conventional medicine on how to respond.

Here in Australia and overseas there is an emergence of integrative medicine which is essentially a blend of conventional and evidence based complementary medicines and therapies and lifestyle interventions for the treatment and prevention of disease.

What has been a significant driver for integrative medicine is the increased community interest in complementary medicine and as a result there is now a real need for general practitioners to be increasingly familiar with a number of areas within integrative medicine.

There are numerous ways in which this can be done. One is for doctors to gain training in CAM methods of which the most common are acupuncture, homoeopathy, psychology and traditional Chinese medicine. Another option is for traditional medical centres to include licensed or registered CAM providers such as chiropractors, naturopaths, homoeopaths and acupuncturists in their centres or clinics. A third solution is for doctors to simply learn as much as possible about CAM, and to ensure their patients feel comfortable enough to discuss their use of CAM with them.

A tan is, sadly, a sign of damaged skin trying to protect itself.

UV light burns our skin and damages our cell DNA, which can result in lines, wrinkles, saggy skin, blotchy pigmentation, freckles, broken capillaries, redness or worse, skin cancer.

The incidence of skin cancer in Australia is one of the highest in the world and accounts for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers. This being the case, prevention is essential. The Cancer Council recommends; • Slip on some sun-protective clothing – that covers as much skin as possible.

• Slop on a broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ or higher sunscreen. Apply 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.

• Slap on a hat – that protects your face, head, neck and ears.

• Seek shade.

• Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards.

• Be extra cautious in the middle of the day when UV levels are most intense.

It’s also important to check your skin for any new or changed spots, freckles or moles and have regular skin checks by a medical professional.

Suffer Migraines? Heavy Periods? Hate taking the Pill?

Looking for safe, effective, ‘set and forget’ birth control?

There are alternatives, read on…

Birth control has come a long way since The Pill’s introduction in the 60s. While The Pill is a great alternative to unwanted pregnancies, it comes with drawbacks… for a start, you have to remember to take it and gastric upsets can also limit its effectiveness. If you’re a migraine sufferer, overweight, over fifty, along with other factors, it may not be the best option for you.

Other options: Abstinence… well… totally safe right? Long-acting, reversible contraceptives (LARCs) which include implants, injections and intrauterine devices (IUDs) are amongst the alternatives and are excellent ‘set and forget’ options.

The Mirena is one of these, it is an IUD that releases a small amount of hormone locally to the uterus, changing the uterine environment to be inhospitable to both sperm and eggs. Significant advantages are that it is 99.9% effective, can reduce heavy periods, can remain in place for up to 5 years and the hormone that it delivers is small dose and localised, so issues caused by systemic systems like implants, injections and pills are rare.

Disadvantages are: NO protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and upfront cost. GPs often refer patients to a specialist for the initial insertion and this can be expensive. However, your GP can refer you to Family Planning who offer as cheaply as possible; the draw back here is a lengthy waitlist. The middle road is finding a GP who can insert the device at their practice.

What happened to your New Year’s Resolutions? Still sticking to the hard and fast no alcohol, no chocolate and going to the gym every morning before work? Finding it hard to keep up the pace of this brand new lifestyle?

Like most of us, a new year means new intentions and new goals of how we want to live. Did you say on January 1 this year ‘I’ll go to the gym and lose that 5 kilos’? For the first few weeks, you choose salads, sign up to that new CrossFit studio and say no to all desserts.

Unfortunately, the best intentions tend to get lost as summer holidays end, work and busy routines take over and before you know it you’ve got one hand on the remote control and the other in a packet of TimTams!

Don’t feel guilty or talk yourself down. It happens to the best of us. However, THIS is the year that YOU WILL take control of your health, one step at a time. So how do you start?

Start small. In this day and age, everything needs to be big to have better value so choosing no chocolate EVER seems like a great idea at the time but leads to a crazy binge on a box of Favourites down the track!

Try allowing yourself a couple of small squares every couple of nights. Start to remove all sugary soft drinks and fruit juices from your diet. Start to move. Find that thing that is yours!

Swimming, hot yoga, walking, tennis. Try it. Love it? Great. Not for you? Then try something new to find what you love. If you love it, it will be easier to motivate yourself to do it.

Start treating yourself. Try not to justify treats every time you do a bit of exercise, especially with food. Why not reward yourself with a massage after losing those first couple of kilos? Or meet friends for a coffee (no cake!) after yoga.

Start by eating real food. Reduce packaged and highly processed foods, which are full of excessive sugars, salts and transaturated fats.

From Beach to Bar

Where are you headed for your Summer getaway? Perhaps you’re visiting family across the country, enjoying a staycation by the ocean or ditching the stress by taking off on a sandy holiday with your guy. Whatever your plans, it's highly likely you'll be spending a lot of time by the beach - and the bar.

Skip the tedious process of trudging home and getting ready all over again. This time all you'll need is sea salt spray for your hair, BB cream for your face, a multi-tasking outfit and a thirst for Pina Coladas!

It's all about white, white, white! This shade is the best option for keeping cool at the beach and appropriate for kicking on at a beach side bar. Bonus points for linen, anglaise and embroidery!

If you can't go without your jewellery, go for tribal jewellery or a cuff and simple rings - this will keep it fuss-free at the beach but also lift your outfit for the bar.

If the twin set is not for you, or you're after something even easier, opt for a fresh white kaftan, slip on dress or highwaisted shorts, finished with accessories like these ones pictured.

It goes without saying - heels are NOT your friend at the beach! But once you're ready for dinner or dancing, slip off your sandals and slip into a pair like this; they will make any outfit look more dressy, plus the wooden heel and earthy shade make them perfect for being by the beach.

Well ladies, so far we have covered off on what to wear to your high school reunion, what to wear to the races, black tie and formal dressing, what was great for Winter. We haven’t quite covered “smart casual” as yet but, I think that it’s essential that we discuss the logistics of packing for that perfect holiday first.

Firstly I googled the topic (a bit of research never goes astray). Nope, didn’t like any of that, nothing really for me here, honestly, 4 outfits for a whole week, you have got to be kidding! One skirt, one pair of pants (pyjama style at that) and one pair of shorts, (shorts, are you crazy). Now as I’m getting ready to jet off to Bali for a few quiet days in the sun, I’ve set myself the task of packing a very practical suitcase.

#3 Plan and research what you need and

as charged - we all do this. Why – because we find something we like that looks good on us so we naturally gravitate to the same piece in several variations over and over again. The result is the same outfit and the tendency to start wearing the latest version and ditching the 7 other look alike pieces you have. Worse still you’ve just invested in a piece that is not going to give you a new outfit. Break the chain by bringing awareness to where you too are guilty of this habit.

Actually, I’m lying, nothing practical about me. My first thought, Bali is hot so we need to pack lots of lovely light silky things that give the air of boho deluxe so we can swan around looking like Talitha Getty (note – just google). Swimmers, tick, matching sarong and Kaftan for lazing around the pool while sipping cocktails, tick. Okay, what next?

Thinking about all the activities, well, there will be shopping (lots of shopping probably), maybe a trip to the zoo, trip to the water park, day trip to Ubud and dinners out most nights.

Mmm, definitely cannot rely on four outfits for all of that. Now ladies, as with most occasions we always have our “go to pieces” and this is no exception. My all time favourite is a black (note, black is always good) off the shoulder dress. It can be dressed up or down, sandals

by day or stilettos by night (I always pack at least one pair of heels, you just never know when you might need them and nobody should feel dumpy while wearing their favourite dress).

So tick, I have my good dress.

I also have my favourite hippy skirt and I can mix this with at least 6 of the tops and shirts that I am going to pack next – that bit is easy.

Four black tops and two white shirts (in case you spill spaghetti or something on the first white shirt). So far so good. Cargo pants, yep, the safari look is always good (remember, I am on holidays) and will go with the tops – see ladies, lots of outfits already. Black harem pants, absolutely a must and we have those 6 multitasking tops to mix and match. Now I could/should stop here.

But I won’t! Okay, just another two long floaty dresses I’m sure they won’t go astray, three additional kaftans, just in case and I think I will take that paisley jumpsuit (I am serious).

There is still a bit more room in my suitcase.

I have limited myself to four pairs of shoes, (thongs don’t count). Lots of knickers, don’t need socks, a hand full of exotic scarves a very pretty slip for lounging around my hotel room, a suede fringe wrap in case it gets cold. OMG, I’m done. TOO EASY. Oh, and my denim vest and I will need a couple of belts but I am only taking one handbag, after all, I can always buy more when I get there.

A hat, yes, I’ve got the hat, tick. So we have clothes, shoes, a handbag, a hat, what else?

My complete makeup kit, fabulous exfoliating scrubs and, at least six shades of lipstick.

Jewellery, a few pairs of earrings and couple of necklaces. On the home run now.

Phew! A bit of careful planning and I’m sure that I have packed the perfect holiday wardrobe complete with an individual sense of chic.

Now you know as well as I, that when I arrive, it’s going to be hotter than Hades. I will head to the local market and pick up a nasty little sun dress. Then I’ll spend the next week sans makeup wearing nothing except said sundress even though I have packed more clothes than I could ever hope to wear, just in case, and besides “I have too many clothes” said no woman ever. Urghh, I can hear my husband whining already. Bugger, now where did I put those passports?

New Cruise Ships Sail into Port Newcastle The Port of Newcastle’s cruise season is well underway commencing with the "double header" visits by the Pacific Dawn and the Pacific Jewel in November last year.

All up Newcastle will welcome 11 cruise ships and approximately 18,000 passengers over the 7 month period – ending in May 2016. Highlights include five maiden visits and the return of the high-end luxurious cruise line, Silversea. The cruise season is expected to inject as much as $11 million dollars into the region’s economy. (source: Australian Cruise Association).

Visiting cruise ships dock at the Channel Berth at Carrington, which offers deep water berthing and plenty of parking for coaches, which transport passengers to and from shore. It also offers a panoramic view of the city and beaches. Port of Newcastle provides a free shuttle bus service for cruise ship passengers, from the berth to Queens Wharf, which runs continuously throughout the day.

For many couples (including my beloved wife Jennifer and I), we have moved on from chocolate and champagne as a staple feature each Saint Valentine’s Day. To break the monotony I have decided to shake things up a little this year… but don’t tell the bride!

My research tells me (secondary of course) that the following foods act as aphrodisiacs; hot chillies, asparagus, avocados, bananas, pomegranates, salmon, walnuts, vanilla, watermelon - along with the usual suspects of red wine, chocolate and oysters. Each has differing effects which range from getting your blood pumping, stimulating nerve endings, generating hormones and increasing muscle strength.

To help boost romance, consider spoiling your Valentine (and yourself) with a simple recipe that’s sure to leave them satisfied.

What was once a distant dream for Fernando and Renata Antao turned into reality in 2011 when they opened the first Sabor in the Hunter Dessert Bar in Lovedale.

The pair are also the creators of Casa de Sabor (House of Flavour) - the award winning Portuguese Mousse which comes from an old Antao family recipe - one which Fernando’s grandmother started making over 75 years ago and is still made using the same method and ingredients.

The Newcastle-based photographer said he first became interested in utilising drones a number of years ago, although at the time the available technology was too difficult to manoeuvre without putting his precious camera kit at risk.

“However, if you understand the implications and compromise in the correct areas, you can still generate good images even in low light.”

And Andre certainly has been doing that. One of his stunning landscapes was featured as intouch Magazine’s photo of the month in the November 2015 issue.

The photograph, taken on a cold winter’s morning, let Novocastrians see their muchloved Bogey Hole in a whole different light.

It is typical of the type of setting Andre loves to explore with his drone. “I like flying offshore and photographing back towards familiar landmarks. The Bogey Hole in Newcastle is one of my favourites,” he said.

Andre went even further in his exploration of his adopted city a few months ago, putting together a video - “One Day in Newcastle” using his drone to showcase some of the highlights of the city’s wide open spaces (check it out on YouTube).

Both of the latter are expensive and very noisy,” he said.

But as the use of drones by both amateurs and professionals alike increases (it was estimated that in America alone up to one million drones were sold as Christmas presents last year), so too is the regulation surrounding the industry.

In Australia, the use of UAVs is governed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

“In addition, if you want low-level static video you will have a helicopter hanging over your premises - the drone is much safer and cheaper.

Chris said the commercial use of drones is closely regulated, with drone pilots required to be certified by CASA as a UAV Controller.

“Drones can also get much closer so, for example, if an insurance company wants a roof inspection following a storm a UAV can fly just above the gutters and roof line and closely inspect aerials, air conditioners, etc.”

Every flight, including its flight plan, also needs to be approved by CASA, but Chris said there were many people out there who did not understand the regulations – or the risks – of operating a drone.

Raised in the UK, Chris worked for years as a photographer for the Royal Air Force – so it seems only natural that he has ended up combining his experiences with aircraft and cameras to become Skeye High’s UAV drone pilot.

“The third important issue is; if you are employing a drone person you must ask to see their Controller’s certification, their insurance coverage and make sure they are a certified Operator or are operating under the legal guidance of a certified Operator.

Otherwise you may end up with several $8500 fines and possible prosecution.

“Due diligence is essential if you are engaging anyone for drone work; if it crashes and hits someone or damages property and they have no insurance you could be looking at millions of dollars liability."

•You must not fly closer than 30 metres to vehicles, boats, buildings or people.

•You must not fly over any populous area, such as beaches, heavily populated parks, or sports ovals where there is a game in progress.

•If you are in controlled airspace which covers most Australian cities - you must not fly higher than 400 feet (120 metres).

•You should not fly within 5.5 km of an airfield.

CLOCKING UP ANOTHER MILESTONE at TILLYS. WORDS: Michelle Meehan

The last 12 months have been full of major milestones for Donna and Ron MacIntyre.

Not only did their youngest child, Anna, turn 18, the other “baby” of the family – their flourishing childcare business – also celebrated a significant birthday of its own.

Tillys Play and Development Centre clocked up 21 years of continuous operation in 2015, more than two decades after being “born” inside the renovated shell of a former church in Largs.

The milestone moment was celebrated by Tillys “extended family”, including 110 staff members – many of whom are, coincidentally, members of the MacIntyres’ extended family as well.

But it wasn’t until Donna and Ron took over another service in Mannering Park that they decided to unify the separate centres under one name, chosen by the staff.

In 2015, one of the workers proposed turning the event into a ball to celebrate the 21-year milestone. As part of the ball, Tillys’ management team handed out perpetual awards, which will be used each year from now on to acknowledge deserving staff.

Donna said it was truly a night to remember – as well as the perfect way to take in just how far Tillys has come in the past two decades and what it has meant to her family.

“We started as Largs Pre-School, then Abermain Pre-School then the third one we got was at Mannering Park and we said I think “We had 110 staff at our ball, we had it done beautifully and it we should be called the same name so that name continues,” was incredible,” she said.

“I love the relationships I used to have with the children, but I also love the relationships I have with the leaders (centre directors) now.

Those close to the Standley family will tell you that you will never hear Thalia complain. Even Mum Sally, with her baby girl in the hospital (a time anyone could be forgiven for just thinking of themselves), was telling friends about travelling to Africa not long before the accident. She had spent time in a facility for kids who had lost limbs in awful circumstances - including machete attacks. The kids had been treated with no available pain medication and Sally was grateful that at least she had that for Thalia. This is an exceptional family.

The 29th of August 2015 began as a typical day but turned into the stuff of nightmares for the Standley family from Lake Macquarie.

While playing at a friends house, a savage attack by a neighbour's dog ended with their beautiful daughter Thalia, who only days before had celebrated her 8th birthday, losing her right arm.

It was a traumatic event and shocked not only friends and first responders who were there and witnessed the aftermath but anyone hearing the story for the first time. It is any parent's worst fear that something like this would happen to their child. However, it is when the worst of things happen, that can bring out the best in those around you and the local community have come out in force to gather around this strong, resilient little girl and her family.

The people who helped Thalia and ultimately save her life have repeatedly said her bravery and strength is something that they will never forget and is what is helping them get through the trauma. She was lucid throughout the whole thing and in the ambulance on the way to the hospital was able to give them her name and DOB, address and phone numbers and even corrected the paramedic on the spelling of her name.

Just days after the attack, while she lay in a hospital bed and her family were all still trying to come to terms with what had happened, Thalia was visited by her 7-year-old best friend who had raised the alarm on the day. She said "don't worry I'll help you at school" and Thalia said "well you will have to, you're my right-hand man now" and they both smiled.

Helping Children Deal with Trauma The principal of Valentine Public School, Rick Budden and Thalia's teacher, Nicole Lawson have gone beyond the call of duty in the wake of Thalia’s accident.

Aware that everyone felt the effects - not only Thalia and her three school mates who were with Thalia at the time of the incident - but the whole school community.

The pair has found brilliant ways to help with any questions and concerns the kids have by using art and music therapy techniques. These include a stunning hand painted "Worry Tree" which stands over 2 metres high. The concept comes from a book by the same name by Marianne Musgrove. The artwork allows the children to write down any concerns they have and the different animals on the tree will hold them so the kids don't have to.

They also use a song by Jack Johnson called Upside Down in the classroom. All the kids now know the words and you can feel the whole space lighten as they sing along.

Fresh Hunter Fashion on Show Emily Gallagher, Hunter TAFE

The catwalk lit up as more than 150 unique student designs went on display at the annual NEWGEN fashion show at Newcastle City Hall at the end of last year.

It was the seventh year of the NEWGEN fashion show with 35 Hunter TAFE Fashion Design students participating in the exhibition. A range of collections produced by the budding fashion designers throughout the year was modelled on the catwalk including Distressed Denim, Graceful, Stage One Designs, Upcycled Shirts, Swimwear, Studio Design, Wearable Art, and the summer collection of Hunter TAFE student label Notched.

The event provides a platform for local Fashion Design students to showcase their designs and be involved in the planning and

preparation of a fashion show production, giving students the opportunity to gain exposure to the Australian industry.

A major highlight of the event was the second collection of the student label Notched. The Summer 2015/16 collection entitled ‘Blame it on my Gypsy Soul’ is a collection of boho-inspired kimonos. The garments were produced as part of an international study tour to Bali where students learn about international manufacturing processes and practices used by many Australian and global fashion labels.

For Hunter TAFE Fashion graduate Samantha Fisher, the technical advice, hands-on training and opportunities such as the study tour to Bali and being a part of the creation of Notched has been essential to her journey as a designer.

“Pattern-making was one of my biggest hurdles and thanks to the expertise and guidance of my creative teachers I have been able to master this along with how to work through the entire design process from beginning to end,” said Ms Fisher.

Samantha has now graduated from the Diploma of Fashion Design and Technology at Hunter TAFE, recently launched her own fashion label Naiive Designs, and has secured a design job within the Newcastle fashion industry.

4 Easy Party Decoration Ideas for your Home

Summer is all about entertaining your friends and family at home, whether it's a casual afternoon catch up with wine and cheese, a weekend barbecue or a party. With a few simple decorations, you can transform your entertaining space and give it that party vibe. #1 BAR Set up an impromptu bar on a bench or low table. Provide jugs of ready-made cocktails, bottles of bubbles or lay out the ingredients for guests to make their own. It’s a great way for all your friends to meet each other too! Don’t be afraid to mix and match glassware if you don’t have a set – it adds to the party vibe.

#3 FRESH FLOWERS Nothing is more welcoming than a bunch of fresh flowers at your entrance or hallway to greet your guests. If you can, cut them from your garden (or a neighbour's), or grab a bunch from your local fruit shop or florist and arrange in a bright vase or jug. A simple colour works best – you can't go wrong with white. #4 PAPER DOILIES Who says doilies were only for nannas? Use paper doilies in different sizes to make an easy and inexpensive decoration to transform your doorway. You can easily glue these along a piece of string, making them a little longer than the height of the doorframe. Hang each string individually at different heights from the top edge of the door with Blu-Tack or pins. No time to create them yourself? Pick up a ready-made door curtain available from Big W or party supply shops.

#2 BALLOONS Choose a single colour that fits in with your celebration. Opt for bright or metallic balloons tied in bunches with a contrasting ribbon and scattered from your entrance through to corners of your room or garden. To make an impact, gather the strings, group together and place on your table, using a pebble to weigh them down.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2016 A softer take on colour.

Colour plays a strong part in our homes’ mood and personality.

We choose colours for the feeling they evoke. I find it fascinating that individuals are drawn to particular shades and colours, and how we are all different. At InsideOut that’s something we like to work through with individuals to help them find a balance between what they are drawn to and the best way to introduce colour into their home.

For those who know colour (be it a lot or even just a little) the term “Pantone” will be a familiar term. For those who are just starting out “Pantone” is a system for matching colours, (usually used in specifying printing inks – but increasingly used for paint-matching in interior design).

Near the end of each year, the good people at Pantone select a “Colour of the Year” that their panel of experts predict will be popular during the following 12 months. Described as “a symbolic colour selection; a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.”

•Blues - are often used to create a feeling of calmness and serenity. The colours of the ocean and the sky are some of the most popular of colours. Leading into the teals and aquas they are a fashionable choice for bedrooms and living areas where we want to unwind and relax from the stresses of the day.

In previous years this has been one single colour but in 2016 they’ve shaken it up by choosing a colour “combination” and for •Green - a colour found in nature that creates a feeling of the first time Pantone introduces two shades, Rose Quartz and calmness, it is said that it has a healing effect. Dark lush Serenity as the PANTONE Colour of the Year 2016. green leaves or trees depicted in art or a pattern on fabric or wallpaper create a fresh tropical feel.

Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure, while Serenity is •Orange - a mix of yellow and red, these colours all demand a weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, presence. They are strong, energetic colours that can be used bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent to create a bright uplifting feel (note that overuse can be very times. Orange is “an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose and the beneficial used in areas where we entertain and eat, evoking cooler tranquil blue reflecting connection and wellness as well an energetic and warm atmosphere. as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

•Yellow - a colour that is best used in small doses. Small Using Pantone colours in your home is easy if you follow the splashes add a touch of life and energy. Yellow is the most basic rules of colour and mood: vibrant colour to the eye - warmer yellows and mustards are

an easier choice to add to a colour scheme. Beware though – yellows can invoke feelings of aggression and frustration!

•Red - the warmest of all colours and best used in your décor rather than as furnishings or wall colour. Certainly not a colour to be overused in home decoration - overuse in a child’s bedroom can be over-stimulating and cause restlessness. If you decide to use in your bedroom, you better look up the feng shui of red in this area first!

•Pink - a colour associated with all things feminine, which is why it evokes feelings of softness, calmness and feeling pretty.

Check out the rose quartz and serenity pantone colours - they work well together and I think those who haven’t considered pink would contemplate these tones. Designer’s, Decorators and Artists are all a good source of information if you are trying to achieve a certain feeling to a room or even an office area.
