INTOUCH WITH OUR CITY in the more interesting landmarks and include more information in the map’s busier areas. After the outlines were completed the hand-drawn map was scanned into the computer and a further three weeks were spent colouring in the details using Photoshop. It was finally printed out onto two panels of a robust, all-weather product and hung on the walls of the Maritime Museum in October 2013. "The Maritime Museum seemed to be the perfect place to put it, where you could see the map and also look out over what it was about. It’s really great when you see people taking photos of it and what’s lovely is that a lot of local schools use it for their local studies," Liz said. “I’ve been past, and there’s been a whole class of kids standing there with clipboards, and I think ‘Well, isn’t that neat.'” It’s not surprising the author and illustrator appreciates the map’s appeal to children, with much of her other work involving creating children’s books and school resources and hosting workshops. She said creating the map was just like completing any other illustration and was informed, like all her designs are, by her love of reading and writing. “For me the map was not that different (to my other work), it’s still a visual narrative that tells a story,” Liz said. “When I was a kid I did a lot of art but mostly I read and wrote stories, I was always making up stories... I took art at school and did go to Art School in England, but I always still wanted to include literature and text in what I did. For me, (the way I create art) does definitely come from the story writing and reading.”

INSIDE INTOUCH

From the Editors...

WIN! PAGE 12

It seems cliché to say but time really does fly. It was this time last year that the first ever intouch magazine was delivered to letterboxes throughout Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. It’s amazing to think that we are a year on and, thanks to our community of readers (not just the print readers – the online readers too!), we are proud to call ourselves Newcastle and Lake Macquarie’s Favourite Local Lifestyle Magazine! Right from that first issue in which we spoke to local landmark artist Trevor Dickinson we have concentrated on bringing recognition to the great people doing great things in our community. We’ve talked to people such as Neil Slater, Catherine Britt, Tina Arena, Marcus Westbury, the Australian Baking Team, James Reid, Christine Anu, Diesel, Nigel Milsom .. even the guys behind Disney on Ice and Cirque du Soleil! There are so many people in our community doing great things and we’ll continue to bring you all of their stories and more! In this issue we talk to the Hunters very own superheroes from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service as they prepare to celebrate 40 years in the Hunter with a special exhibition at Newcastle Museum. We also talk to Liz Anelli about her Mapping Newcastle projects and we find out about all the work that is being done to encourage bicycle -riding across our region (of which Liz has done plenty in the pursuit of the perfect map!) In many issues over the last year we have explored the forgotten history of our local areas such as Charlestown, Wickham, Warners Bay, Hamilton, Cooks Hill and the Foreshore and in this issue we shine the spotlight on the bustling harbour side that is Honeysuckle. We have visited our restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, doctors, dentists, physios, schools, pre-schools, university, TAFE’s, theatres, venues, fashion outlets, health food outlets, designer homeware stores, providores, cellar doors, dream homes and the list goes on and on! Why? Because everyone has a story to tell and we are here to tell it! Happy Birthday intouch magazine! And a big thank you to all of our loyal readers for your continuing support. We like to think that the reason you have adopted intouch magazine as your own is that we are locals too - a local magazine produced by locals… for locals! Enjoy!

There is little doubt that the transformation of Newcastle’s waterfront during the past 24 years, from its industrial past to the vibrant economic and cultural hub that it is today, is one of the most productive and progressive urban renewal programs ever undertaken in NSW.

TOPFIVEONFIVE Top Book RUTHLESS: SCIENTOLOGY, MY SON DAVID MISCAVIGE, AND ME Ron Miscavige The only book to examine the origins of Scientology's current leader, RUTHLESS tells the revealing story of David Miscavige's childhood and his path to the head Dave Bean seat of the Church of Scientology told through the eyes of his father. Ron Miscavige's personal, heartfelt story is a riveting insider's look at life within the world of Scientology. Reviews of this book (released mid-May) are mixed. A common theme is that it is not well written (definitely won’t be winning the Pulitzer prize any time soon) and that it glosses over much of the role that Ron Miscavige played in introducing his son to Scientology in the first place. On the up side, if you are fascinated by Scientology then the book holds plenty of insights not previously told.

The 6th December 2015 marked the 40th Anniversary of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service at Merewether Beach, Newcastle. Volunteers, crew and community came together to mark this significant milestone by forming a giant ‘40’ in front of one of the choppers– no mean organisational feat! THE PINK FLOYD EXPERIENCE Civic Theatre

THE DOCKYARD - The Oreo Martini In honour of our Honeysuckle Special Feature, this month’s Top Drop is a mouth-watering Cocktail (because we all know that Honeysuckle is Cocktail-Central right?).

The Pink Floyd Experience really know how to put on a show. Each tour is bigger and bolder than the last, and the group leave a trail of sold-out shows in their wake!

Each week The Dockyard inspire us all with their “Cocktail of the Week” Here’s the secret recipe for our all-time favourite – The Oreo Martini! Start by smashing up some Oreo's, drenching them with Baileys Irish Cream, chocolate liqueur and fresh cream, ice to top, then shake it down to freezing, strain it into a pretty glass and sprinkle some crushed Oreo's on top!

This time round, they will push the envelope again with a recreation of Pink Floyd's landmark stadium show The Division Bell Tour (released in the 90's, titled Pulse). This show features many hits, including a live performance of the entire Dark Side of the Moon album. The recreation of Pink Floyd's music, staging, lighting and special effects promises to be on the same level as the original aweinspiring, full-scale and biggest-grossing tour in history.

Of course if you’d rather have a skilled professional mix up this tasty treat for you (who wouldn’t!) then a visit to The Dockyard at Honeysuckle is a must. You’ll find them at 13/1 Honeysuckle Drive, Honeysuckle.

Don't miss The Pink Floyd Experience live at Civic Theatre on June 23rd. You can find tickets online at www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au from $99.

THE TRAVELLING FILM FESTIVAL

POKOLBIN ESTATE Hunter Valley

Australia's longest running Travelling Film Festival is once again bringing world cinema to regional Australia! The Travelling Film Festival (TFF) showcases Australian and international features, documentaries and short films, screening in areas which have more limited theatrical screening opportunities. The TFF currently tours to 18 locations annually, screening in Newcastle at Tower Cinemas the 24th to 26th June. The TTF creates a program specific for each stop of the festival in consultation with the cinema/or local film society. You will need to keep an eye on the website and facebook page for updates for what will be screening and ticket information, but we do know that a total of nine features and perhaps a short film are screened, with Friday the 24th the official opening night.

Having lived in the valley for 10 years we had tasted at many wineries – but never (officially at least) at Pokolbin Estate Vineyard. That’s not to say that we hadn’t drunk our fair share of their award-winning wines – we had just never done an official tasting there. Overseas visitors were just the push we needed, so we set off for a day in the Valley and first stop was Pokolbin Estate Vineyard. As it turned out it was also our last stop – we enjoyed our experience so much that we probably over-stayed our welcome! The tasting was carried out in their very classy members room – where we all sat around a bar height table and were guided thorough our selected varieties by the very knowledgeable and affable Daniel and with the occasional appearance from Graham – the Estates General Manager.

We already knew the wines were terrific – what we didn’t realise was what an enjoyable and informative experience the tasting could be. Also located on the Estate is the Hunter Olive Centre with a wide range of produce available for tasting and purchase (of which there were many made!) A highly enjoyable experience for your next visit to the Hunter Valley – you’ll find them at 298 McDonalds Rd, Pokolbin.

COVER STORY FEATURE WESTPAC ROSS 40 YEAR NOBLE ANNIVERSARY This photograph was taken from a go pro that was mounted on the helicopter's winch during a training exercise.

Saving lives… Changing lives…

THE HUNTERS VERY OWN SUPERHEROES! It is an omen of tragedy to those who see it flying high overhead and wonder what emergency it has been called to attend. It is the free ride you never want to have to take - but when you do it is a sigh of relief that help is at hand. It is a vibrant red and yellow sign of hope for those in need; a vital lifeline at a time when things have gone terribly wrong. And for the people of the Hunter, it is our own. Born and bred out of a desire to keep the community safe, funded by the wages of our workers and the wider business and residential communities, propelled forward by countless hours of volunteer work and a dedicated band of employees proud to say they serve the community that supports them. 6 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

“With the Service being owned and operated by the community, for the community, the people of Newcastle and the people we serve have always put their hands in their pockets and kept us going as a world-class service and we’re very humbled by what the community does for us and what the community stands for, for us. “I’ve worked in most services around this country and overseas, I’ve been fortunate to do that and this is very unique, the people of Newcastle look after their own.” Graham’s history with the helicopter is almost as long as the Service’s existence itself.

WORDS: MICHELLE MEEHAN

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service is many things to many people.

“Just me personally, I’m so very proud to be able to work for the community, I certainly believe in what the Service does, what the people do for the Service,” he said.

In 2015, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service clocked up its 40th year in operation, and this month it will continue to celebrate that milestone with a special free exhibition in conjunction with Newcastle Museum. A fun and engaging exhibition for all ages, it will highlight the history of the Service and foreshadow its future with static displays, footage of the helicopters in action, memorabilia and information. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, who is a member of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Board of Directors, said the Service was an important part of the region’s history and future and the exhibition at the Museum was a tremendous way for the community to learn more about its work. That work has seen it act as a vital link in the wider chain of emergency services operating in the region for the past four decades. Crewman Graham Nickisson for one couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of it all.

The original Service was created in 1975 by the Newcastle branch of Surf Life Saving Australia, acting as a surf rescue and coastal observation operation during the summer months using a Bell 47 helicopter. On October 20, 1980, the first Intensive Care Paramedic from the Ambulance Service of NSW travelled on board the helicopter for a mission in the Hunter Valley. With the assistance of additional funds from sponsors including its original and longest serving partner Westpac (then the Bank of NSW) and support from the community, the Service commenced 24 hours a day, year-round operations in 1981.

COVER STORY WESTPAC 40 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The Service has been involved in some of the most dramatic and horrific emergencies in the state’s history, including rescuing crew members from onboard the stricken Pasha Bulker vessel after it ran aground about 30m from shore at Nobbys Beach during the violent storms of June 2007.

Pictured Above: Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Graham 'Nicko' Nickisson

“Some days are really terrible days, no doubt about that, I went to the accident the other day where the train hit the car on the level crossing up north at Taree, and you just come home, and you think this is just terrible, but then you see the other side of it. You see the good and the bad.”

And one of those good moments remains the most memorable It was involved in countless rescues and patient transfers of his career after he helped organise for a dying Maryland during the Newcastle earthquake on December 28, 1989 and less than a week earlier was the first helicopter on the scene at woman to fulfil her last wish – to see her son Chris graduate as a police officer in 2007. what remains Australia’s worst ever road accident – the crash While his brother later left to join the fire brigade, Graham has that occurred when two tourist buses collided on the Pacific “It was a lady about nine years ago, Jenny Walker was her name remained there ever since, going on to become the Crew Chief Highway at Clybucca, 12km north of Kempsey, killing 35 people and she had cancer. until 2010 when he stepped back from that role. and injuring another 41. “Her husband Garry put a call out in the local paper, she was “My involvement started when it was a surf rescue helicopter Graham said the horror of the scene at Kempsey has remained dying of cancer and her son was graduating from the police back in 1981,” he said. with him forever. force and they couldn’t get her down there because she was so “I was involved in surf lifesaving, my brother Mark had been in gravely ill. “The Kempsey bus crash certainly changed my life, I was only the Service two years prior to me joining, he went off and joined a young kid then and I’m not supposed to see what I saw then “And he said if anyone could help, he’d just love to get her down the fire brigade in 1984 but before that I had followed in his and that sort of really knocked me about at the time,” he said. there, that’s all she wants to do. footsteps. “We were the first helicopter on the scene, and subsequently, a “I spoke to (Service CEO) Richard Jones and we organised it. With a background in surf lifesaving and a brother who was already volunteering for the Service, a then 17-year-old Graham signed up to become a volunteer crewman in 1981.

“But once the service started doing what it’s doing now, rescuing people and taking them to the hospital and helping people… well, that was my forte, I really like helping people. It’s the old cliché, I do it because I like helping people but it’s true. “I really believe in the service and what the service provides and the amount of people it saved over those years is just phenomenal.” Since 1975 the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has undertaken more than 30,000 missions.

“I don’t like to talk about it a great deal, but that’s probably the nastiest thing we’ve ever seen or that the service has been involved in and it’s still to this day Australia’s worst ever road accident.”

Operating on call 24 hours, seven days a week, it attends about But while tragedy is, unfortunately, part and parcel of being an emergency services personnel, Graham said there are also 1000 missions each year. The service responds in three main plenty of heart-warming and uplifting aspects of his job such ways – as a primary responder that attends an accident site as coming face-to-face with the people whose lives they have to treat and transfer patients to a hospital; as a secondary helped save. responder to transfer patients between hospitals for specialist treatment; and to complete search and rescue missions, “When you see those people come in, they say hello to you and helping to locate missing people, rescue and return them to they’re walking around, you’ve really got to sit down and think safety. ‘Gee this is worth it’,” he said.

“The helicopter stayed there, we were able to set her up in an ambulance so she was able to see it while still getting all the critical care that she needed and we were able to fly her back. “Later on that evening or early the following day she passed away. That was all she ever wanted to do… when the call came out to help, the Service put the hand up because we were looking after one of our own. “I just organised it, I didn’t do the job because emotionally I don’t think I would cope too well with that but I’ve become friends with Garry, the father, and the son over this period and we still keep in contact. “And I think it is something that will stay with me forever.” Graham said the Service couldn’t have done what it did for Jenny, or any of the lifesaving missions it is involved in if it wasn’t for the existence of the other personnel making up the chain of emergency services in the region. ► www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 7

We’re just one link in the big chain.”

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has grown and evolved since its humble beginnings, now operating four helicopters 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from two bases at Broadmeadow and in Tamworth. In 2017, it will expand once more under a new contract that sees its counterpart of Lismore come into the fold to make the

Service one of only two aeromedical providers in NSW, primarily assisting the people of northern NSW. The changes will see its number of pilots rise from 11 to 17 while four new Augusta Westland 139 helicopters are being purchased to make up its fleet at Newcastle, Tamworth and Lismore. A new operational base will be built at Belmont airport, although its headquarters for all the regions will remain at Broadmeadow. In Tamworth, the Service will upgrade crew, paramedic and medical team facilities while in Lismore, a new base is being constructed at Lismore Airport. It heralds an exciting new era for the Service, which Mike believes should ensure it continues to service the people of the Hunter and Northern NSW well into the future. ■ The free Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service exhibition will run from noon on Wednesday, June 1 through to Thursday, June 30 at the Newcastle Museum. Opening hours are from 10am to 5pm Tuesday through to Sunday each week.

Another vital link in the chain of the Service’s own operation is the community that supports it. It costs about $16 million a year to keep the helicopters and crews ready to respond when needed. About 50 per cent is funded through contracts with the NSW Department of Health and NSW Ambulance. But the remainder of the cost is raised through sponsorships, Volunteer Support Group activities, events and partnerships with the community, including Westpac’s sponsorship - which is now Australia’s longest ever corporate sponsorship arrangement. No-one has ever had to pay to be rescued or transported by the helicopter service as a result of this community support. Chief Pilot Mike deWinton spent 20 years in the Royal Navy in England before coming to Australia. He joined up with the Service in 2000 and has flown countless missions since. He said being part of the Service was a rewarding and humbling experience and is still blown away by the level of community support it receives.

“Supporting the community, providing that service to the community is the most rewarding part of it; when we see the results, when we meet up with patients we’ve flown, to see what they’ve come back to now after having been in the position they were.” Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

INTOUCH WHAT'S ON

TURNING UP THE HEAT THIS MONTH At Honeysuckle

TRAILER By Vanessa Bates

The temperatures may be dropping, but this month Honeysuckle is heating up with Winter Heat 2016 lighting up the harbourside promenade.

This is a darkly comic play set along the train tracks, about love, family and clocking on at the dream factory.

There is always something happening in Honeysuckle and Winter Heat has been one of the hottest (pun intended) annual events on the Newcastle calendar for over a decade. This year this iconic Newcastle event is taking place Saturday 11th of June from 5pm to 9pm and promises to be bigger, bolder and brighter than ever before with six festival zones stretching along the Honeysuckle foreshore. Everyone is welcome at Winter Heat and festival attendees will be spoilt for choice with a food and wine area, featuring a selection of some of the Hunter's best wineries and boutique food vendors. There will be roving performers, live musical performances, a silent disco featuring a giant neon boombox, a silent cinema zone, fire sculptures, a smattering of markets and on water entertainment that includes giant Zorb balls, inflatable water dragons, and tug boat ballet. This year, the organisers have ensured there is something for everyone – including the kids! The littlies will love the roving entertainment, fire sculptures and massive kids zone featuring an enormous inflatable obstacle course, foam pit, giant jumping pillow and many more incredible attractions that include the Big Yellow Bus mobile kid's play and fitness centre and facepainting. Don’t miss out! Tickets to the VIP Zone can be purchased at www.events.ticketbooth.com.au/event/WHF16 for $25 per person +bf. For more information visit www.honeysuckle.net

“Was he asleep? Or jumping on the bed, maybe he did one of those awesome flying leaps from across the room, just like he did every night. But this night when he landed BOOM! He was gone. All that was left was this gaping hole. You feel it don’t you? When someone just disappears." Jed still lives with his mothers, between the beach and the bush, on a train line with a city at either end. Waiting. People say he’s waiting for his father to come back. Jed doesn’t know his father but he’s trailed the Hollywood myth and he knows who his father could be. He’s seen every movie, he’s read all the articles and he’s watched all the trailers. Finding his dad could fill the sinkhole in Jed’s psyche. The truth is, it’s hard having a star for a dad, when you’re completely ordinary. Unless of course, that’s not the truth. And that could be harder. Trailer is a brand new locally commissioned play by Newcastle's own NSW Premier's Award-Winning Playwright Vanessa Bates (Porn.Cake, Checklist For An Armed Robber, The Magic Hour) and directed by Anna Kerrigan (Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Theatre for Young People, Artistic Director of Aspire). BRIAN CADD

The Star Behind the Stars To say Australia’s Brian Cadd is a prolific songwriter would be an understatement of mammoth proportion. From 1966 until his departure for America in 1975, singer, songwriter, keyboard player and producer Cadd was one of the most prominent musicians on the local scene. He remains a key figure in the history of Australian music. Born in Perth, Brian moved to Melbourne just as Beatlemania swept the country which, combined with Brian’s interest in piano, opened the way to his future career. He joined The Groop in 1966 and wrote all of their hit singles and albums including Woman You’re Breaking Me and Such a Lovely Way.  Upon their demise, he formed AXIOM, Australia’s first “supergroup” with Glenn Shorrock. Once again Cadd penned all of Axiom’s hits (including Little Ray of Sunshine and My Baby’s Gone) before the band broke up in England in 1969. Returning to Australia, he launched a rock label called Bootleg Records in 1972. It became the most successful Independent Record Company in the history of Australian popular music up to that time. The next few years saw many gold and platinum records as a solo artist and an array of prestigious awards for film scores, title songs and TV themes. In addition, he produced many acts and wrote and produced some of Australia's most successful advertising music. Hits from this era included Ginger Man, Let Go, Don’t you know its Magic, Mamma Don’t Dance, Alvin Purple and Class of 74. In 1976, he was signed to Capitol Records as an artist and moved to Los Angeles. For the next 20 years, he worked across all aspects of the International music scene from writing, production, publishing, management and the planning, development and administration of several successful music production companies.

INTOUCH WHAT'S ON And if there’s one thing that a federal election year brings, it’s a smorgasbord of satirical goodies. There’ll be minor party pies, red meat, blue cheese and don’t forget your greens. But most of all, there’ll be laughter. And lots of it. Over 15 years and 21 shows, they’ve mercilessly mocked all the usual suspects. We’ve watched Howard Tampa with refugees, Rudd give pennies from Kevin, Gillard refuse to be lectured by “that man,” “that man” scrap the carbon tax, stop the boats and – um – get the budget back into surplus… But no one has been able to outplay, outwit or outlast The Wharf Revue. So, we’re throwing a party and everyone’s invited.

Paul Keating once said that politicians come in three varieties: straight men, fixers, and maddies. Well, you can be sure all of them will be knocked down a peg or two when The Wharf Revue comes rolling into town. & RESTIVE

From the inimitable minds of Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott comes another instalment of what has become a Sydney Theatre Company institution. From the movers to the shakers, from the winners to the losers, the stage will be filled with a year’s worth of foolishness.

This project is supported by Arts NSW’s Curatorial Support Initiative grant, a devolved funding program administered by Museums & Galleries of NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.

His musical history is the stuff of legend. Broke and homeless in Torremolinos, Spain in the late sixties, the talented twenty one year old decided to make music his lifes work. In the early seventies, he and seventeen musicians followed the infamous Hendrix trail to Europe – and there they stayed, making Holland base and beginning a two decade career as American Gypsy.

28 May - 7 August 2016

BLACK WHITE & RESTIVE is part of an ongoing national conversation that explores engagements between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. The artists brought together here represent the diversity of approaches to crosscultural art practice in works that span direct collaborations and more subtle, and at times controversial, forms of influence and exchange. The exhibition draws upon Newcastle Art Gallery’s collection of Hermannsburg watercolours and other modernist and postmodern paintings to contextualise cross-cultural currents in Australian contemporary art.

Who will make the cut? Who has the numbers in the caucus room? It’s anyone’s guess. Join Jonathan Biggins, Amanda Bishop, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott with Sydney Theatre Company’s The Wharf Review at the Civic Theatre Newcastle, July 8th and 9th. For more information and tickets visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au

There Ain’t No Party Like a Wharf Revue Party!

This year, The Wharf Revue will be a parade of past and present indignitaries – a who’s who of 21st-century embarrassments, from the politicians to the celebrities – all skewered on the stake of seriously side-splitting satirical silliness and musical mayhem.

STEVE CLISBY

Steve Clisby was the best kept secret in the country until last year when the charismatic performer captivated audiences and reached the semi-finals on TV talent juggernaut The Voice which was broadcast into more than two million living rooms weekly. Steve’s subsequent tour sold out 20 shows in record time. It’s safe to say Steve Clisby is no longer a secret. Moving seamlessly from soul roots to contemporary revivalist soul, Steve Clisby’s live performances showcase supreme musicianship and legendary cool. At a time when artists worldwide are reinventing classic soul, funk and jazz inspired music, Clisby is a unique proposition. An exponent of the original soul movement, he has quietly forged a career over many decades and many continents. Now he breathes new life into the genre.

A record deal, a string of hits and numerous television appearances cemented the group as the African-American soul voice in Europe touring alongside Chaka Khan, Hot Chocolate, Kool and the Gang, Crusaders, Mothers Finest, Level 42, Santana, Frank Zappa and Taj Mahal. In 1999 Steve Clisby made Australia his home and in 2013 Steve became a citizen. “I connect with this country on so many levels. Australia is young and growing and change is part of the culture, politically, environmentally and artistically and anyone can be a part of the process. It is the most beautiful place I have ever been,” he said. Steve’s televised rediscovery brought about enormous recognition, it was also a profound personal and professional journey and forced Steve to really 'let go'. Steve will play one show only at Lizottes on Friday June 17. Visit www.lizottes.com.au for tickets.

John Waters added “To be embraced by New Yorkers as we were from October to January, this was a great reward for all of us who worked so hard to get our show there, at the Union Theatre." "It truly felt as though Glass Onion had in fact given the city what it needed, to reconcile their own sense of loss of a much loved 'son,' as John Lennon came to be. Night after night, our audiences stood to acknowledge us, and it doesn't get much better than that," he said. In 1992, twelve years after Lennon’s death, Waters and D’Arrietta first conceived and performed Lennon: Through a Glass Onion on a small stage at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney.

Celebrating the Genius That was John Lennon

The show was an instant success. In the years that followed, Waters and D’Arrietta toured the show and played sold-out engagements at venues including The Sydney Opera House. The show performed a three-month engagement in London’s West End.

“It was truly an emotional experience seeing Lennon: Through a Glass Onion in New York at its American premiere,” said producer Harley Medcalf. “We were overwhelmed, blessed really, to have the support of Yoko Ono and the Lennon Estate. As Charles Waterstreet (Fairfax) said, “We should get out the streamers and confetti to shower D’Arrietta and Waters in an open limousine to the steps of our town halls.” The show will return to the US following the Australian tour.

in an intoxicating double bill presented by 16 of Australia’s finest dancers at the top of their game. In his 2010 work Cacti, Ekman presents a gleeful and affectionate parody of the affectations of contemporary dance. Sixteen dancers stand - seemingly trapped, on oversized Scrabble tiles. While a string quartet plays, and spoken recordings give tongue-in-cheek narration of the action, the dancers run, fall, writhe and try to escape their invisible prisons. Eventually – and this is the important bit, they each acquire a cactus. But what does it all mean?

Sydney Dance Company intrigues and entertains with CounterMove Internationally renowned Sydney Dance Company is set to return to Newcastle Saturday 25 June with CounterMove, a stunning two-part program juxtaposing works from two renowned contemporary dance visionaries – Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman and Sydney Dance Company Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela. Australia’s leading contemporary dance company brings together movement, music, dramatics, philosophy and comedy,

Cacti is a laugh-out-loud funny and affectionate deconstruction of art’s greater excesses, described by The Australian as, “An extraordinarily original and vibrant work of dance-theatre - witty, effervescent, playful, surreal and joyously physical.” Bonachela’s world premiere, Lux Tenebris, provides the perfect contrast. Named for the Latin term meaning ‘Light and Darkness’, this full ensemble piece explores the extremes of human experience, responding to a newly commissioned powerful and evocative visceral soundscape by frequent Sydney Dance Company collaborator, composer Nick Wales. Showcasing the dancers’ trademark poetic and technical mastery, Bonachela’s movement follows deep, unexpected twists to discover a dark place where there is space for beauty and light.

Have you ever wondered why some people fall victim to every bug or virus going around while others continually stay healthy and avoid illness? Are you that person who always has a constant cough or sniffle? So why does the dreaded winter cold always choose you? Well, it all depends on how strong and healthy your immune system is at any given time. Our bodies are constantly under siege by a multitude of disease-causing organisms and chemical toxins every day. Fortunately, our bodies are equipped with multiple defence mechanisms to counteract and defeat these invaders! Your immune system is made up of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs. Through a series of steps called the immune response, your body recognises and defends itself against these bacteria and viruses that appear foreign and harmful. Immunity within your body is a very complex and fascinating system. It consists of several lines of defences such as our skin and mucous membranes which protect our body from invaders as well as cells and chemicals in our body fluids who are at the ready to attack and destroy viruses and bacteria as they enter the body. But for various reasons our defence forces can weaken and our immune system can become compromised leading to reoccurring colds, viruses, infections, and in more severe cases chronic immune disorders and disease. A poor

diet, bad sleeping patterns, little or no exercise, and a stressful job or home situation can prevent our immune system from standing firm against coughs and colds. As naturopaths and nutritionists, we like to focus on prevention rather than cure by keeping our defence forces strong and healthy, particularly over the cooler months when we are more susceptible to colds and viruses. A healthy diet, regular exercise, nutritional supplements, and herbal tonics are all essential ingredients to reduce the frequency, severity and duration of illness. They will also speed up recovery time if any nasties do infiltrate their way into your body. Don’t wait until your nose starts running and the cough starts barking to treat yourself. Get winter ready now with our Winter Wellness programme at Mojo Health. Our qualified herbalists and nutritionists can provide you with the nutritional advice and herbal tonics you need to get you through the coming winter months. This means less time feeling awful and taking time off work or school and more time feeling fabulous and enjoying life!! INTOUCH HEALTH + WELLBEING

Fixing 3pm Fatigue! 5 Healthy, Energy Building Tips that Work. WORDS: SONIA MCNAUGHTON Naturopath & Medical Herbalist, Mayfield Medical Connection

especially common in menstruating women who don’t enjoy eating meat, chicken and/ or fish.

Zombie time hit mid afternoon for me. Around 3 pm, I’d be yawning and moaning about how tired I felt as I shuffled to the vending machine desperate for a quick energy hit of pure sugar.

I don’t recommend jumping in with a supplement as too much iron and B12 can actually cause as many problems as not enough! Make sure you talk about your iron and B12 containing foods with a trained professional.

I remember vividly the day I learnt 3 pm fatigue slumps were fixable, it was as if the sun shone brightly after a long, cold, dark winter. The world was a new and exciting place again, and there was hope I could make it through the day without exhaustion and empty chocolate calories. 1. COFFEE AFTER BREAKFAST ONLY Not drinking coffee on an empty stomach is a simple step with a powerful result crushing sugar cravings and boosting energy hours later. It was a huge change for me to not drink coffee when I first woke up but the results were immediate and profound.

5. ZZZZZZZZZZ'S Problems in the bedroom, sleeping problems that is, need to get sorted and sorted quickly. I love herbal teas to encourage deep, restful sleep and passionflower, and lavender are two of my favourites as they are delicious, easy to drink and effective. If these steps don’t fix your fatigue don’t stay silent! Seek trained and professional advice by talking to a doctor or a registered naturopath to investigate what is happening to your energy levels.

2. BREAKFAST TIME = PROTEIN TIME Pure protein foods like eggs and plain yoghurt mean enjoying a day of stable energy as well as stable moods. So many people I see don’t eat enough protein, leaving them vulnerable to not only fatigue but also depression and anxiety as well as frequent colds and flu. 3. SECRET ENERGY WEAPON The heavy artillery of the natural health world is CoQ10 a little-known nutrient needed to make energy in your body. The good news is it is available in a supplement and may boost both physical and mental vitality. 4. ENERGY FOODS: IRON & B12 Low intake of iron and B12 foods can cause fatigue, brain fog, difficulty with exercise and even more severe side effects. These are

museums, wharves, offices and apartments in addition to open space. Greater mixed use of the harbour has also led to the demand and establishment of recreational boating resources on the Hunter River including Queens Wharf Brewery, Honeysuckle and Lee Wharf piers and the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, which boasts a modern 180 berth floating marina, Clubhouse, boat yard and commercial precinct. The overall Honeysuckle development has also preserved a number of heritage-listed buildings along Newcastle Harbour, including the former railway work sheds which now house the University of Newcastle gym, the Newcastle Regional Museum and Wine Selectors as well as space for community activities.

Entertainment on the Harbour The transformation of Newcastle’s waterfront from its manufacturing past to the vibrant economic and cultural hub that it is today has to be one of the most successful urban renewal programs in the history of New South Wales’ history.

HONEYSUCKLE

Newcastle’s Vibrant Harbour-Front Playground

The Coastal Banksia, or Honeysuckle, prospered on the banks of Newcastle Harbour for many years, prompting the name Honeysuckle Point. Honeysuckle is the link between the city’s Civic precinct, the harbour and has been the public face and in many ways, the soul of the urban renewal project. In recent years, Honeysuckle has opened up the harbour to Newcastle and has fast become Newcastle’s premier dining and entertainment precinct, overflowing with things to do and see, and places to dine. This is where the glistening port meets the bustling city, with extensive public spaces, frequent live entertainment and cultural activities and an array of inviting cafes, world-class restaurants and pubs to choose from along with some of the most outstanding water views.

A Gradual Transformation  For most of the 20th century the area we now know as Honeysuckle was dominated by railway workshops, wool stores, cargo sheds and warehouses, both active and dormant. Unfortunately, this rich industrial heritage left the area contaminated, derelict and blocked off from the people of Newcastle.

On the northern side of the rail, cut off from the rest of the city, this space was seen to be connected to the industrial happenings of the port and industry. The land west of the workshops lay strewn with building and industrial rubble, the scars of former uses, derelict buildings, fenced-off areas and warning signs. Early Honeysuckle was then a blot on the landscape of what is Australia’s second oldest city. By the late 1980s it became apparent that redevelopment was required, and in 1992, the NSW Government formed the Honeysuckle Development Corporation (now Hunter Development Corporation) to work in partnership with the local community. This carried with it the responsibility for the commercial and residential renewal of 50 hectares of derelict industrial land along the Newcastle railway line and waterfront.

The Honeysuckle Promenade stretches some seven kilometres along the waterfront from the mangroves at Carrington, past the Available land was divided into seven precincts: Carrington, marina and yacht club to link up with the remaining foreshore, Cottage Creek, Honeysuckle, Hunter Street, Linwood, Marina past parks and beaches to the historic break-wall guarded and Wickham. Each precinct was intended to develop its own by Nobbys Lighthouse. Anyone can walk, run or ride its entire character and commercial or residential property mix and to length and explore all that Honeysuckle has to offer along the way, including the Newcastle Museum and the Maritime Centre. advance to completion independent of each other. At the core of this urban renewal project was the task of Today, Honeysuckle is a lively community where people can live, work and play, with many apartments and townhouses now opening up Newcastle Harbour to the community by creating quality residential, commercial and recreational waterfront home for many Honeysuckle residents. The area is also the location for many businesses that include NIB, Sparke Helmore, areas, unlocking lifestyle, economic and environmental Hunter Water Corporation, GHD, and is also home to the Hunter opportunities and benefits for the city. Development Corporation (HDC) who are responsible for much of Honeysuckle’s current and future development. Still to come is Canberra based investment and development company Doma Group’s $38 million plan for a residential and a commercial building which is under construction at 18 Honeysuckle Drive – adjacent to the NIB office and backing onto the proposed light rail route. The building will become home to 71 apartments, more than 6000 square metres of commercial and retail space, a cafe and 193 car parks.

The vision gained its inspiration from the experiences of communities in Seattle, Boston, Vancouver New Orleans – places that had rediscovered their waterfronts, was to provide a link between Newcastle’s heritage, culture and the waterfront. The ultimate aim was to transform Newcastle into a modern city, attract visitors, foster community pride and provide spaces for people to meet. The Honeysuckle story is an important chapter in the city’s growth into a sophisticated, rejuvenated city with a diverse, modern economy that is home to a range of residential, employment, cultural and recreational opportunities.

All these things make the Honeysuckle Precinct one of the best places in the city to meet friends and have fun. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that Honeysuckle is one of the Hunter's The area has experienced a significant gentrification over most popular places to eat out - a vibrant waterfront playground. the past decade with the transformation of the once heavy But it was not always like that. industrial waterfront into a variety of cosmopolitan hotels, 22 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

There aren't too many places in the world where you can sit back, relax and take in the incredible views of a working coal port but Newcastle is one is one of them. Here you can watch a team of tugboats guide a giant coal ship or cruise liner into port, shortly followed by a fleet of fishing boats heading out for an evening's haul while you dine on the harbour-edge sipping on a glass of wine (Hunter Valley of course!). Watching all the harbour activity can make one thirsty and this is where Honeysuckle - with its strip of restaurants, hotels, bars and cafes lining the waterfront, comes into its own.  You can choose to go upmarket with an array of a-la-carte restaurants and bars or go casual with pub meals and craft beers and ciders on tap. Excellent dining options include Nagisa Japanese Restaurant, Heritage Indian Cuisine and Seasalt at the Crowne Plaza with magical views of the harbour. Alternatively, if you are in the mood for smooth cocktails, boutique beer, tapas, yum cha and bar snacks then make your way to the western end of the Honeysuckle Precinct where you will find MoneyPenny and also The Dockyard - a favourite venue on the Newcastle pub scene. For those with a sweeter tooth, try the local Cold Rock Ice Creamery with its seemingly endless selection of different ice cream flavour combinations, or indulge your passion for the finest Belgian chocolates, exquisite cakes and decadent desserts at Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café. Honeysuckle is not short of things to do and the Newcastle Maritime Museum, located in a restored wharf building, houses a collection of two hundred years of local maritime activity and stories of wrecks and rescues, the port and its city. Not only does the Maritime Museum provide a unique insight into a rich and vibrant past, but it is also a superb location from which to experience and appreciate a modern working port. Just a short walk from the Maritime Museum and located on Workshop Way, is the very impressive Newcastle Museum, which is housed in the old Railway Workshops buildings now listed with the National Trust. The museum has an extensive exhibition program made up of permanent and special exhibitions and a dynamic range of community events. Honeysuckle has an active calendar of year-round events and this month the museum is hosting a captivating photographic exhibition celebrating 40 years of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.  Also happening this month is the annual Winter Heat Festival, which takes place on Saturday 11th June from 5pm to 9pm with six festival zones stretching along the Honeysuckle foreshore. Everyone is welcome, and there is something for everyone – food and wine, live music, water entertainment, kids activities and more.  This is an event not to be missed! ■

Opposite the lifeboat stands the Rocket wagon, a desperate “last resort” used when rough seas prevented the launch of “Victoria”. This mobile platform was used to launch line-carrying rockets across to floundering ships.  If all went well, a rope was then secured between ship and shore, allowing crew and passengers to be transferred one-by-one to safety over the tops of the waves. There’s a treasure trove of history to discover at the Newcastle Maritime Museum – but watch out for the pirates! If you’ve never visited then, put it on your to-do list. It’s as fun and interesting for locals as it is for tourists. For more information visit www.maritimecentrenewcastle.org.au

This involved the widening and reconstructing of bridges,  the reclamation of land,  the construction of parkland and pathways, the development of medium density housing, the relocation, and expansion of Newcastle’s commercial fishing fleet, securing new investment, new office block development and attracting new businesses and activities. Today, this 50-hectare site now supports a diverse mix of employment, commercial and residential uses, tourism, and is a great public domain.

DRIVING CHANGE...

Hunter Development Corporation WORDS: QUENTIN VON ESSEN

For two decades (from the 1970’s and into the 1990’s), Newcastle’s central business district and inner suburbs experienced physical degradation, a declining population and sustained job losses. People and employment were increasingly moving to the suburbs.

potential of opening the city to the harbour – by extending the foreshore promenade and redeveloping underutilised rail and shipping yards for urban and community use.  Formed by the State Government in 1992, the Honeysuckle Development Corporation (now Hunter Development Corporation) set about working in partnership with the local community to transform 50 hectares of surplus government land and coordinate the redevelopment of excess government railway and port-related land along four kilometres of harbour front.

The Honeysuckle’s story is far from over. While the project itself may be nearing completion, the task of entirely revitalising the city centre is far from complete.  Instead, the Honeysuckle project has laid the foundation for the continued revitalisation of Newcastle’s CBD and for the city to continue to be an important economic driver, cultural centre, environmental leader and lifestyle alternative. Still to come is the Doma Group’s $38 million plan for a residential and a commercial building which is under construction at 18 Honeysuckle Drive. The site, which is next to the NIB office and backs onto the city’s disused heavy rail corridor and proposed light rail route, will become home to 71 apartments, more than 6,000m2 of commercial space, and some retail space and a cafe, as well as 193 car parks. Earlier this year, Hunter Development Corporation released the first harbour-front block of land in over a decade, by calling for expressions of interest to develop a 7,300m2 block of prime waterfront land in the heart of Honeysuckle in a development that is predicted to boost the city’s urban renewal. The site which is currently being used as a car park is located directly opposite the NIB building and zoned for mixed-use, which means it could accommodate residential, commercial, retail or hotel developments.

For the city of Newcastle, the Honeysuckle project gave hope that the central business district would once again attract retail Regional retail complexes had caused the demise of the central and office developments lost over decades and that the inner "The development of this site will be an exciting chapter in the city would be seen as an attractive and vibrant residential business district’s retail attraction. WICKHAM - 97 Hannell Street, Ph 4965 4229 • OPEN Mon - Fri 8.30am to 5pm, Sat 8.30am to 3pm, Sun 10am to 2pm • www.fishcoop.com.au and the NSW coast, all 2137 kilometres of it, reveals an embarrassment of riches. The Commercial Fishermen’s Co-Operative located on Hannell Street in Wickham, is considered the most successful and most progressive co-operative in New South Wales and all their fresh seafood is caught locally by local fisherman. Formed in 1945 to service the needs of the local commercial fishers, the co-op supplies local caught fresh seafood daily to Newcastle and surrounding areas as well as Sydney. Choose from their selection of fresh Atlantic Salmon, barramundi, blue eye travella, tuna, snapper, flathead, kingfish, ling, mullet, ocean trout, ocean jacket and orange roughy – fillets or whole. Balmain bugs, blue swimmer crabs, squid, eastern rock lobsters, shrimp, mussels, scallops, clams, oysters….Is there no end to this piscatorial paradise?

The Commercial Fishermen’s CoOperative... Where fresh is Best The lure of surf and sand, the waft of coconut oil and the scrunch of salty hair is as much about the Australian coastal lifestyle as is the promise of eating great seafood. Is there any other food that speaks so clearly of place than seafood, especially if you can hear, see or smell the salty air of its former habitat? Fish - let me count the ways: cold, poached, pan-fried, deep-fried, barbecued or smoked. Australians love their wild-caught seafood

The catches are consigned through one of the Co-operative’s seven receiving depots located at Gorokan, Tacoma, Swansea, Newcastle, Nelson Bay, Tea Gardens, and Bungwahl with the administration office being located at Hannell Street in Newcastle. The Fishermen’s Co-Operative is the best place to get the freshest seafood in Newcastle. Straight from the sea, to the boat, to you – the only way you could get fresher seafood is if you caught it yourself (and have you ever tried to catch a prawn?)

It was while visiting Avignon in France that Kathryn Brown felt inspired to open a wine shop showcasing a selection of premium local and imported wines. Ideally located on the corner of Bolton and King Streets in the fast-growing dining precinct of Newcastle East and surrounded by fabulous restaurants, apartment blocks, offices and law firms, The Discerning Drop is in splendid company. Kathryn, who has spent many years working in the wine industry, has a superb eye (and of course palate) when it comes to choosing exceptional wines for her wine store. And it shows, with her shelves stocked with a handpicked selection of Australian, New Zealand and European wines from Meerea Park and Adina Vineyard in the Hunter Valley as well as others from Margaret River, Bordeaux and other regions in France, Spain,

The crimson red door shop front door acts as a welcoming beacon, and the interior is stylish and warm with timber wine racks well stocked with premium wines. An imposing stone gargoyle (Seth) performs the role of the sentry in front of the wine racks, which often amuses clientele. Wine and cheese have always been two great culinary pleasures and recognising this, Kathryn has a fridge stocked with a wonderful range of award winning cheese varieties to be enjoyed with any wine purchase taken home, to the office or hotel room. Also available are a selection of dips, spices, fresh pasta, yoghurts, crackers, oils and balsamic vinegar. You will also find some quality Cuban cigars and Belgian chocolates on the counter – perfect for a celebration! The Discerning Drop is definitely your one-stop shop for those who are a little more discerning in their choice of wine, want to try something new or simply want to enhance their dining and entertaining experience.

It’s not just Coffee. WORDS: SCOTT WEBSTER

Australians love their coffee – and so do I. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about 46% of us are coffee drinkers, outnumbering our tea sipping friends at 38%. Researcher IBISWorld estimates Australia’s competitive café and coffee shop industry is now worth around $4.3 billion to our economy.

Ideally, coffee should be served at between 65-75 degrees Celsius. Anything above this and you risk scalding the milk. For the blenders, my advice is to drink coffee that ‘cuts through’ the milk so you can enjoy the particular characteristics of the coffee bean’s flavour. Also essential to the process are the machines used. It goes without saying that a high-quality machine will ensure the extractions are close to perfect.

The final part of the equation is of course in the hands of the barista. A good barista is well educated and trained in the art of making coffee. There are a number of courses Coffee is often maligned for its caffeine content available and certificates that can be obtained however the beans also have antioxidants if you are interested in enhancing your own that help the body fight free radical chemicals. skills. I believe making great coffee is like creating a great wine. The better the grape, the better the drop - the better the bean, the better the blend.

Together we have created an exceptional recipe using beans from four high altitude countries to produce the Providore Blend. Just like Colonel Sanders, I can’t give away the exact ingredients but suffice to say the beans have been specifically selected, blended and roasted for a certain amount of time to produce a wonderful experience for any devotee. It’s fair to say there are two types of coffee drinkers – black and white. I drink mine dark but about 85% of people prefer a milk blend with flat whites, lattes, and cappuccinos proving the most popular. Many customers like their coffee served hot however getting the right temperature is important.

The word 'Akasha' refers to the 'fifth' element. The 'unknown factor' that combines the four elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. So, while most beer is made from the four basic ingredients of malt, hops, water, and yeast, it is this 'fifth' element, the Akasha, that instils the spirit, the soul and the magic, to create a beer that is truly special.

@ The Grain

Pouring now from the Akasha Brewing Company is the Freshwater Pale Ale (5.2% ABV, 35 IBU) - an American style pale ale, brewed using the boys favourite American hop, Cascade. The Freshwater is well balanced between the sweet biscuity malt and the thirst quenching hop flavour and crispy clean finish.

In May, SEED had a change of focus and decided to become purely vegetarian. While acknowledging the importance of eating well, owner Phil Maher, is also motivated by procuring food from environmentally sustainable sources. “Since the evidence does point to the consumption of meat being a significant factor in driving global warming, we decided one way to reduce our carbon footprint is by excluding meat from the menu,” said Phil.

SEED Organic

“Our menu is also very adaptable to cater for gluten-free and vegan preferences,” he added.

Vegetarian Café Nestled in the premises of Hunter Organic Foods, the recently re-launched SEED aims to provide premium organic vegetarian fare at an affordable price as well as fabulous organic, fair trade and carbon neutral coffee from Sprocket Roasters. For 16 years, Hunter Organic Foods, tucked away in a small shop in the back streets of Merewether, was the principal source for fresh organic produce and groceries in Newcastle. In 2013, an opportunity arose for the shop to move into The Junction and the long-held dream to open an organic café came to fruition.

In addition to offering indoor and outdoor seating, SEED also operates a hole-in-the-wall takeaway coffee and basic breakfast window from 6.30am Monday to Friday. With ample short stay parking, it is a great place to pick up an early morning savoury veggie wrap, a delicious mid-morning sweet treat, a fresh made cold pressed juice and that morning hit of coffee! Since then, SEED has gone from strength to strength, becoming well known for its fresh cold pressed juices, excellent super food smoothies, great coffees, their signature array of raw food desserts and the constantly changing specials menu that reflect the seasonality of fresh produce.

AWARDS SHOWCASE SKILLS FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW Skills that are helping shape the region’s employment and business landscapes have been highlighted in the annual 2016 Hunter TAFE Awards. Hunter Academy of Sport

The Hunter is full of talented young athletes who have paved their way and earned a spot on the lucrative plane to Rio de Janeiro for this year’s Olympic Games. Among those selected are sailors Will and Jaime Ryan, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, swimmer Thomas Fraser-Holmes, shooters Daniel Repacholi and Blake Blackburn, triathlete Aaron Royle, rower Spencer Turrin, discus thrower Benn Harradine, and marathon runner Scott Westcott, Australian athletics’ oldest Olympic debutant. Among those selected, Outteridge, Jensen, Royle and Harradine were all members of the Hunter Academy of Sport. There are still several hopefuls for this year’s Olympics who will learn their fate within the next two months.

Simon Orchard and Mariah Williams (Hockey)

Australia earned their place in the 2016 Olympics with their first place finish at the 2015 Oceania Games in New Zealand last October.

Both Simon and Mariah, former members of the Hunter Academy of Sport, are decorated athletes with Simon as a member of the “golden year” that took home top accolades at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup. In 2012, Simon was a member of the 3rd place finishing team in London; while Mariah earned a gold medal at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. While the qualifying events have finished, the team has yet to be announced. We expect Simon and Mariah to be on the team roster for the games come August.

Nathan Power and Richie Campbell (Water Polo)

Novocastrians Nathan and Richie are hoping to make the roster for Rio with a strong performance for the Australian side at the FINA Men's Water Polo World League – Intercontinental Championship in Japan this autumn.

Richie competed in the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics Men’s Water Polo team where he finished without a medal, but with eight goals in the competition – an impressive feat amongst the very talented competition. On Tour With The Kid...

Country Roads, Take Me Home! BY CHLOE SULLIVAN With school looming ever closer for my only child, I had that feeling that I'm sure most parents have. Everything is about to change. We decided to plan a trip once a month for the rest of the year that focuses on making memories. Feeling a sense of nostalgia I wanted to take the kid to a beautiful part of the country that I have been going to my whole life, Eugowra in Central Western NSW. Full of fresh air and history, it seemed like the perfect place to start.

Mural weekend. Visiting artists paint massive artworks of local significance which then adorn the side of buildings in the village. Project Coordinator, Jodie Greenhalgh and a committee of dedicated locals do such an unbelievable job. With no official grants or funding, they raise money across the year, and people volunteer their time with spectacular end results. The attention to detail in the colourful paintings make the rich history of the area come to life. With markets, football games, a car and bike show, sheep dog trials all part of the action, the population of the village triples over the course of the weekend. The CWA were set up making food and coffee for all the workers and selling the most amazing array of slices and cakes for $1. The buzz of people in the usually quiet main street was electric, and the most often heard phrase was "what can I do to help." It's nice for kids to see that sense of community.

Even for those not related to half of town, it's still is the perfect place to base Time and money are the big factors that will stop you getting yourself. How to Choose an Awesome Area Rug No Matter What Your Space WORDS: DEBORAH BARTLETT + CHRIS WILLIAMS insideout Newcastle Rugs, the floor variety, serve a variety of purposes. In winter they keep your tootsies warm, they designate a space and, particularly in a living room, they can also define the conversation area. Many new homes are now open plan, and the use of hard floor surfaces are an attractive choice – making rugs a necessity. Rugs bring so much to the total look of any home or room and working from the floor up is an excellent way to start styling your new home or restyling an existing room. Perhaps the most important starting point is to decide what size rug will suit the space.

SCALE & SIZE Rugs come in standard sizes 160 x 230, 190 x 290 or 250 x 350. Due to the growing popularity of larger living spaces, you can now also purchase the larger format 300 x 400. The standard sizes are a fixed price, but options are available for custom size, colour and designs. Where rugs are concerned anything is possible. General rules of thumb apply when choosing a size: •Open plan - use larger rugs to define the areas. •Lounge room - you can place all furniture on the rug, or place sofa and occasional chairs around the edges (at least halfway on the rug). •Dining area - important to make sure the chairs are on the rug when pulled out. Allow about 70 cm around the diameter of the table. A 2m x 3m rug for a six seat dining setting and a 2.5m x 3.5m for an eight-seat dining setting. •Special Corner - I love a round rug in a corner with a few chairs and a side table creating a small area for a cuppa or reading… another room created. •Small rooms - don’t think small, a larger rug will make a room look bigger. •Cold rooms - some homes need some natural fibres to give them warmth. Use sisals or jute. Textured rugs will also add some interest also in neutral tones.

THE LOOK Texture - If you have a neutral pallet go for a textured rug in a neutral shade. This will add another dimension without colour to your look. Coloured rugs need colour in the surrounds to anchor it to a room. Coloured and patterned rugs will add some interest to a room where the furniture doesn’t seem to be strong enough to dominate a space. Balancing all the other elements (lights, fabric, artwork) is important to make this work, so ask for advice. Colour doesn’t need to be bright, there are some beautiful over dyed rugs and soft shades to work with. Colour can be added confidently to halls and entrances without much else around. Being practical - Well before you fall in love with that beautiful rug, stop and think of where it is to be used. Flat weaves are very popular at the moment and are a great choice for under the dining table, but think about the design and colour if you 46 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

have little ones or even messy adults. Flat weaves are also ideal for hallways and high traffic areas, they can be custom sized without breaking the bank. We also love Dash and Albert indoor-outdoor rugs, they need to be seen to be believed as they are unlike any other polypropylene rug on the market. Perfect for under the dining area and outdoor entertaining. If you choose wool for a hall runner, I like to custom make them and have the fibres cut shorter for much better wear. Pure, good quality wool is an excellent choice also for a comfy rug to lie around or sit on. Wool is easily cleaned and will give many years of use. Ask an expert to help with the correct choice. Rugs are a big statement to your home so to get it right, ask for advice, and take home samples and rugs to try. Use masking tape or old sheets on the floor to measure out sizes. Get it right and you will be triumphant! There's some beautiful rugs in store now at insideout (and at great prices with our June sale). We look forward to assisting you with your rug choice – so come in and see us, or check us out online at www.insideoutstyle.com.au

CLEANING TIPS As a rule, professional dry cleaning will give your wool rug added life, but we always have those little mishaps along the way. Here're some cleaning tips: •Routine cleaning - Vacuuming your rug regularly will expand its life. Use a standard head and not the turbo brush. •Liquid spills - Blot, blot, blot the spill, changing the cloth or towel to remove as much liquid as possible. Use tap water to dilute the spill but don’t over saturate. Do not rub. Place a dry towel under the area and place something heavy on the top so it will touch the rug. If the stain doesn’t come out professional cleaning is recommended. Pet soiling can ruin a rug permanently if not removed quickly and carefully. •Solid spills - Carefully remove with a spoon or a dull-edge knife. Blot any remaining food being careful not to increase the area before cleaning. Seek advice as to the correct method depending on what was spilt. •Unknown and greasy spots - Apply isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a clean white cloth. Use a blotting motion, never use a circular motion and do not let it soak through to the back of the rug. •Chewing Gum - Freeze using an ice cube. Shatter the frozen gum with a knife handle and vacuum use a citrus based product to remove the stickiness (check label to make sure no bleach on the label) •Crush marks - Spray with a fine mist of water. Vacuum and massage the rug back to its original state.
