Celebrating cultural diversity at
BEAUMONT STREET CARNIVALE! WORDS: Michelle Meehan
It’s hard to pin down exactly when Hamilton residents and retailers first joined forces to celebrate the suburb’s rich cultural tapestry, but for more years than people can remember, the cosmopolitan cocktail that is Hamilton has been highlighted with an annual festival centred at the suburb’s beating heart – Beaumont Street. Previously known as the Hamilton Food and Wine Festival and then the Beaumont Street Festival, it was re-branded last year as the Beaumont Street Carnivale, tipping its hat to the suburb’s history as a multicultural melting pot. This year it will return on Sunday, March 13 to shine a spotlight on the vibrant dining, lifestyle, shopping and nightlife experience offered by Newcastle’s most iconic eat street. Festival Organiser Bec Dujin said it was important for the event to reflect the community in which it was held. “I think it is important to celebrate the multicultural aspects of Hamilton,” she said. “So the festival is all about inclusiveness and diversity and acceptance, celebrating the things that different cultures bring to the table and offer and how that all merged together to create this community as we know it.” Hamilton’s ethnic diversity is certainly being celebrated within the festival schedule, particularly on an additional stage being set up for the first time this year to host fashion and dance displays from local Indonesian, Greek, Irish, Sinhalese, Scottish, Macedonian and Bangladeshi communities.
the stage or watch Bad Luck Kitty put the rock back into rockabilly when they bring their favourite genre into the 21st century. The double headline bill capping off the day’s diverse entertainment includes Australia’s favourite triple-threat of music, television and the stage, Jon English on the Kent Hotel Stage, and audiences might recognise faces from the Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo and Faceplant when Monsters of Rock take the Northern Star Stage. “The highlight of the festival will definitely be the amount of spectacle on offer and the diversity of acts and things happening in the street,” she said. “No matter what point of day people come along there will definitely be something for them to watch, listen, try, interact with and just get involved with. The thing that draws the community in is that it is such a great day out. “It’s quite different to other events on Newcastle’s calendar; it’s free, family-friendly, entertaining and it also showcases all of the other businesses in Hamilton. There’s a good, diverse mix of retailers on the street and it’s an excellent opportunity to remind people of that when they come here.” Aside from the music, dance and fashion, the festival will also include a variety of food, wine and market stalls as well as cooking demonstrations while the kids will be kept happy with camel rides and free entry at Minimania, presented by Megamania.
Of course with around 15,000 people descending on Beaumont Street each year during the festival, it’s clearly not just the business community who have embraced the event. “Around 15,000 people come to the Festival every year and now with a program of events that’s bigger than ever, we’ll definitely get those kinds of numbers and probably more this year,” Bec said. “It’s a fantastic and rewarding thing for us because we put a lot of love and passion and time into the project. “When I’ve been speaking to people about the festival and how they remember it (because it has been going on for such a long time and is very iconic for Hamilton) and they speak about how the suburb was this bustling ethnic centre and the festival in its heyday. This was the place where everyone came, there was just so much going on and it was such a fun, enjoyable day out. “So what I’m trying to do with the festival this year is re-inspire that spirit and kind of bring that old feeling back to life - the joy and the colour.” While she was involved in the festival last year, this is the first time Bec has taken the reins as its organiser. It has been a tremendous job and months in the planning, but Bec said she was enjoying the experience immensely and believed the key to its success was community involvement. “We try to involve as many community groups as possible, so this year we’re partnering with the Aspect School (Autism Spectrum Australia) and they’re helping us do the decorations and theming,” she said.
“So that’s just one way that lots of community groups are getting involved and having ownership, which I think is crucial because then it’s not a festival that an organiser is putting on, it’s a community festival that the community is contributing to and The event is an initiative of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce enjoying. A merengue workshop and DJ party from Latin Dance and made possible with support from the City of Newcastle and Newcastle will keep energy levels cranking at this stage, “I was involved with it last year but this is my first year running local businesses. located near the Donald Street intersection, while the two main it. The part that I’ve enjoyed most is just meeting so many stages at the Northern Star and the Kent Hotel will offer hours “Over the years, the event has provided many fond memories for people in the community, sharing creative ideas and just locals and visitors,” Hamilton Chamber of Commerce President getting people excited about it because I think it is something of entertainment for festival-goers with a diverse line-up of Nathan Errington said. bands. to celebrate – it’s nice to have an event that everyone can look forward to that celebrates the good stuff.” “The Carnivale acts as a reminder of Hamilton’s rich history and Music lovers will be able to groove to the infectious beats presented by dynamic Afro-fusion 10-piece band Bakoomba, or the diversity of businesses in the area.” The Beaumont Street Carnivale will run from 10am to 5pm on take in the good vibes dished up by gypsy folk band Baltic Bar March 13, with free parking available at Wickham Park. INSIDE INTOUCH
From the Editors... While putting this issue together, it occurred to me that, from a tourism point of view, at least, the vast majority of our local tourist attractions and drawcard events are centred around the water and the warmer months. This is a real shame because there is some amazing local history to learn about and creative people to learn from within our community. And they’re out there creating experiences for visitors and locals that are not only enjoyable but as good (if not better) than anything on offer at most of the larger cities around Australia. This month we spoke to two such people who are out there making a difference. Renata Daniel said that her intention was to “create something different in Newcastle, some new type of tourism that might get people a little more excited about the story of Newcastle,” when she created Newcastle Ghost Tours. We speak to Renata about all things spooky... Rosemarie Milsom is another woman on a mission and we managed to pin her down this month on the eve of the festival which she founded 4 years ago, Newcastle Writers Festival. Far from being a second-rate regional affair compared to its big city counterparts, Rosemarie secures a solid line-up of highly acclaimed writers (including award-winners) each year when she brings the best of the best to Newcastle for us all to enjoy. Cultural diversity is also celebrated this month with the Beaumont St Carnivale in Hamilton. Tipping its hat to the suburb’s history as a multicultural melting pot, this year's festival welcomes Jon English and Monsters of Rock as well as dance displays, yummy foods and camel rides (yes camel rides) and looks set to be an awesome day out for the whole family! In this issue, we continue our journey through the suburbs and get intouch with some of the people who make the lakeside town of Warners Bay tick – and learn a bit about their rich history in the process. For all those who said ‘yes’ during this leap year Valentine’s Day, we’ve put together a terrific Autumn Weddings feature that brings together the very best our region has to offer for brides (and grooms) to be. Enjoy!

THE LADY IN THE VAN
SAPPHIRE INDIAN RESTAURANT Merewether
Two-time Oscar winner Maggie Smith recreates one of her most celebrated roles, Miss Shepherd, in Alan Bennett’s big-screen comedic adaptation of his own iconic memoir and honoured stage play. The tale is based on the true story of Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who 'temporarily' parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. What begins as a begrudged favour becomes a relationship that will change both their lives. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived all those years, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with Bennett to bring this touching, poignant, and lifeaffirming story to the screen. The Lady in the Van is in cinemas from March 3rd.
So what’s all the hype surrounding Sapphire Indian Restaurant at Merewether? It’s fast gaining a reputation as the best authentic Indian food in Newcastle - but the experience of dining here is so much more than excellent food (which it is!). It’s in a bit of an unlikely location (Glebe Rd, Merewether), but this makes for easy parking, and the recently refurbished dining room is modern and classy. They boast an extensive list of wines, beers and spirits to complement the delicious cuisine and you can also bring your own wine (corkage is reasonable at $5). Sapphire Indian Restaurant is located at 367-369 Glebe Road, Merewether. Open 7 days 5pm - 10pm and Sunday Lunch 12pm - 3pm. Ph 4963 2369.

BEN LEE The Dignified
Rebel
If you tried (and failed) to grab yourself some tickets to see Ben Lee when he made two appearances at Lizottes in September last year, you’ll be glad to know that he’ll be back to perform 2 gigs there in March – the 17th and 18th to be precise. The quirky, Bondi-raised singer and songwriter blitzed the ARIA Awards in 2005 winning Best Male Artist, Best Independent Release and Best Single for Catch my Disease. Lee followed this success with a performance of We're All in This Together at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games before releasing it as a single in April of the same year. Both tunes have been used on screens big and small – incorporated into Hollywood blockbusters, Television series’ and advertising campaigns, all making Lee a household name at that time. Not long after, Ben temporarily disappeared from the mainstream Australian music scene and headed overseas to marry actress Ione Skye and become a dad. Various albums followed, including Ayahuasca, an album about experiences with psychedelic brews and mostly composed of instrumental music and hymnal singing, which had fans scratching their heads and wondering where Lee was headed. Even Lee himself admits that the album was perhaps “the most obscure, niche record of my career.”
Fast forward to 2015 and the release of Lee’s latest “When I was first writing the song it was reminding offering Love Is the Great Rebellion. INTOUCH FEATUREWITH ROSSGHOSTS NOBLE
THE
GHOSTLY SIDE of the Hunter WORDS: Michelle Meehan
When Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel Osment whispered the now iconic line “I see dead people…”, a collective shiver went down the spines of millions of movie-goers around the world. But his words would have hit far closer to home for Newcastle woman Renata Daniel. From an early age growing up in Maitland, Renata struggled with the presences she was experiencing, which often came to her in dreams. But her initial terror transformed during her teenage years into a thirst for knowledge – which she is still trying to satisfy today. “They would come to me in my dreams when I was just a few years old so I’ve literally always had this,” she told intouch Magazine.
“The feelings and what I experienced started to differ the more I got into it. And it grew in intensity in my teens and that’s when I really began to get into the learning part of it. “I trained very hard for many, many, many years trying to learn from others, reading many books. Back then it was only the library (I’m in my 50’s) so it was going to the library and learning from other people who I could chat to and I could workshop with. I progressed to the point where I felt I was capable enough to try and do some of these things on my own.” Renata spent many years working as a psychic, although she doesn’t like to be labelled: “I don’t like any titles because a title then lends itself to be condemned by other people.
“And because I’d been in that industry for many, many years anyway I thought this was my opportunity to start this here before anybody else decides it’s a great idea.” She began with a tour that remains the core of her business today – a three-hour walk around the East End of Newcastle. The tour starts at Customs House and takes in the nearby convict lumber yard, the site of the former Newcastle Hospital, Fletcher Park, the Asylum, Christchurch Cathedral and Bolton Street before finishing up in front of the old Police lock-up on Hunter Street.
“We can’t in this field ever call ourselves experts because this area is filled with anomalies, it’s not something you can ever go and get a certificate for or a diploma in; we’re all people who are out there from a passionate perspective so it’s a continuous area of learning for us.
“The East End ghost tour is a really good starting point for anyone who would like to learn a little bit about the history of Newcastle, listen to ghost stories and be on sites that we know have a history of being haunted, so people have heard things, seen things or experienced things,” Renata said.
“But I certainly have worked as a psychic for many years and I use what abilities I have to gauge what is going on in a certain situation.”
“It’s a long tour, it’s a three-hour tour but I just can’t shorten it because of the amount of information that there is. It gives an overall view of that first 150 years of Newcastle so that’s an excellent starting point.”
She also has a deep love of history – an essential element “It wasn’t very pleasant when I was two or three or four because for anyone working in the paranormal field – and so in 2009 I really didn’t know how to express what I was feeling other than decided to channel both of those into a business venture, setting up Newcastle Heritage and Ghost Tours. being terrified. So I would cry, naturally, and I would wake up and I’d be in tears and, of course, Mum and Dad didn’t know “My intention was to create something different in Newcastle, what was going on and they would try and comfort me and some new type of tourism that might get people a little bit leave the light on and so forth. excited about the story of Newcastle,” she said. “But I only really tried to understand or learn more about it as I “Ghost tours weren’t happening here, but they were becoming grew older. very prevalent and there was a lot of buzz going on in Sydney 8 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
with regards to ghost hunting and tours starting to become available.
Over the years, the tours have branched out to include other areas of the Hunter such as Wollombi. 2016 will see the addition of a tour in Lambton, a Paranormal Classroom experience that allows people to delve deeper into the spirit world, Ghost Hunting 101 at Maitland Gaol and special events at places such as Tomago House and the Civic Theatre. “We’re going to do a murder tour as well, just talking about horrific murders up the top end of town, which is exciting,” Renata said.

Of the many stories Renata tells on her East End tour is that of the fate of Alice Maud Bromley – and her strange connection “A couple of months ago I came back from England and just for with a group of Newcastle men 50 years later. an example, in London you’ve got Jack the Ripper tours running every night with at least four or five people running these tours A 21-year-old who came to Australia in the 1930s, Alice was in simultaneously. While there are still plenty of sceptics out there who turn their “Now, I believe that Alice is still in a way trapped on that hill and noses up at the idea of “ghosts”, Renata said it is also amazing sometimes her ghost will appear to us, people will certainly feel to see just how many people have had some type of spiritual her energy,” she said. “experience”. “I had a young couple on my tour about a year-and-a-half ago “It is very common. Up in the East End of Newcastle most now and when I told this story the young man’s eyes lit up very everyone has a story to tell. I had a tour the other night and of widely. the 17 people about 10 had a story to tell,” she said. “I asked him ‘Have I spoken about something that you know of?’ “Most people that are drawn to tours like this are intrigued, – sometimes I talk about things and someone will say that’s my they’ve either had an experience or they want to learn more, uncle you’ve talked of or that’s my grandfather you’ve spoken but it is a lot more common than people would give credit for. about so I have to be very careful with how I research things “I don’t try and push my beliefs on anyone, I present from the because I can sometimes be talking about family. point of view of ‘this is where we stand now in the paranormal “And he said ‘I had an experience when I was a lot younger here field and what we believe or the theories are or the hypothesis when the road under that cliff used to be open and you could is of why ghosts come through or why spirits exist or why places drive up the hill and around onto King Edward Park. When I are haunted’. “But I don’t come from the approach of listen to me, this is the way it is and you must believe me. People will only believe if they have had an experience themselves.”
was about 17-years-old, I was with three other mates in a car and we were doing laps around. As we were driving, in the headlights we saw a body fall from the cliff, directly in front of the car. “Now the driver is in shock, he can’t stop and he actually drives over the body. And the car stops, all of us are sitting in the car and we’re panting, our hearts are beating out of our chests and we go ‘What the hell did we just see, what are we going to do?” As the man explained to Renata, the four friends all got out and walked to the back of the car expecting a grisly scene – but instead saw nothing. “And they all look at each other at this point in time and they swear they will never tell anyone what they have just seen happen, it didn’t exist, no-one would have believed them anyway,” she said. “And so this young guy looks at me and says ‘I haven’t told anyone this in the last 15 years – did we run over Alice Maud Bromley, the lady you just talked about?’ “And I said maybe, maybe it was a time slip that you just happened to be in the right place at the right time and you had a replay of something that occurred 50 years ago. Wow, how amazing is that? “So I guess that experience is real to you (and your friends) and no-one should take that away from them; that is something that will remain in their memory forever.” Renata said stories of more than one person seeing or experiencing the same thing at the same time is pretty exciting. “That’s when the ears will prick up, even the scientists will say that’s interesting because it’s not just one person’s experience. A number of people are seeing and being able to give you the same amount of information at the same time,” she said. “To me it’s exciting, it’s a field that, even though it’s been around for many hundreds of years now, it’s still in its infancy. “For me it is a lifelong passion and I will continue to do this until my last breath and the more I explore and the more I learn, the more questions there are, the more I want to know and need to know.”
Of course, while Newcastle’s history is an incredible source of inspiration – and ghosts – for her tours, Renata makes one thing clear to everyone who comes along: there is no guarantee you will see or feel anything – apart from amazement at the stories she tells! “People will say ‘Will I see a ghost on my tour?’ – it’s a classic question. I always say to people I can’t tell the ghosts to come, I can’t tell the ghosts to be here at 8 o’clock because that’s when I’m starting my tour and to haunt these people now. “That is something that is beyond my ability to bring forth, it happens when it happens or it doesn’t happen. You’ve just got to be there at a lucky time or be the chosen one, whatever it is. You bring your energy to the table and that makes a big difference.
“Newcastle is the best place in the whole of Australia (for ghost stories), we are the second oldest settlement in Australia and we’re the only settlement on the mainland that actually started as a prison." “Our history is amazing, all you need is to get into it and it’s just so exciting. For the first 10 years, we had 100 to 150 people up the top end of town and they were all either prisoners or

THE BEATNIX
Saturday, April 2nd
It was February 1980, 10 months before the untimely death of John Lennon, that Australia and possibly the world's, first tribute show THE BEATNIX was conceived and produced by Tony Dean founding member and now owner/manager. Coming from a Show Band background, popular in the 1970s and touring Australia-wide, Tony was used to playing covers, including Beatles, Doobie Brothers, Beach Boys, Hollies, Bee Gees and Eagles, all great harmony groups, plus songs directly from the top twenty hit parade. But then Punk came along and it was out of the question to play that style of music. “It was suggested we play more Beatles music, everybody loves The Beatles,” commented Tony. From that simple suggestion, Tony thought let's play only Beatles songs. Hence, the first tribute show was conceived. “We initially put together a four-week season in Perth, Western Australia but the shows proved so popular that after just 18 months we decided to make the move to Sydney where the show is now based and is available to travel worldwide,” he said. The Beatnix Show includes fully authentic musical instruments identical to those used by The Beatles and including some rare and valuable guitars. You can catch THE BEATNIX live on stage at Lizottes Newcastle on April 2nd. For tickets visit www.newcastle.lizottes.com.au

ST MATTHEW PASSION
Returns to Inspire Audiences It’s been 20 years since Newcastle audiences have been treated to a live performance of one of the greatest examples of religious music in the Western world – the St Matthew Passion, but anyone who heard the Johann Sebastian Bach masterpiece two decades ago is unlikely to have forgotten its magnificence. The St Matthew Passion is a composition like no other - a retelling of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as laid out in the Gospel of St Matthew, interspersed with stunningly beautiful arias and performed by three choirs, two orchestras and a half dozen soloists. All up, there are almost 200 singers and musicians involved in the performance, which is sung completely in German, not counting the members of the audience who are encouraged to join in during the hymns. It was a grand and moving musical event in 1996 – and promises to be all that and more when it echoes around the walls of the Great Hall at the University of Newcastle on March 20.

So there are a couple of times when, as a friend of mine says, time stands still because the music is so ravishingly beautiful. “So you get the whole range, you get drama, you get beauty, you get passion, you get death, you get people shrieking out to crucify, it’s a massive work but it’s hopefully really involving.” The Newcastle University Choir are presenting the concert and will be joined for the performance by renowned Hunter choirs Echology and the Hunter Singers. Paul Bevan will take on the role of the Evangelist, or narrator while Christopher Richardson will perform Christus (Jesus). The high-calibre line-up of soloists will be capped off by Penelope Mills, Anastasia Bickel, Brenton Spiteri and Jeremy Kleeman while Christ Church Camerata and Concertante Ensemble are the two orchestras involved.

MIA DYSON IS ‘RIGHT THERE’ THIS MARCH! Australian songwriter Mia Dyson is heading home this March for a run of special shows to celebrate the release of her forthcoming EP Right There. Featuring her latest single Tearing Up the Lawn, the EP follows up her 2014 album Idylwild, which saw her take out the J Award for Double J Artist of the Year and continued her rise both here at home and in the US, where she now shares her time. The Right Here tour follows up a successful run of shows with The Waifs last year and will also include visits to some of her favourite festivals including Port Fairy.
“This will be my first headline tour in more than a year at home so I’m really excited to be returning, especially with some new songs in tow which I’m super proud of,” said Dyson.
14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
“Tearing Up the Lawn got an amazing response when we dropped it for the Waifs shows last year and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the rest of the EP.”
Tearing Up the Lawn showed a real progression for Dyson as she continued to tread her own path between folk and rock. With media references to ‘a female Springsteen’ being added to more traditional comparisons with Bonnie Raitt and Ani Difranco, the track was a signpost of what’s to come as Dyson sheds the shackles of genre and delves into a more exploratory rock sound. Dyson will grace the Lizottes stage on March 9th for one night only. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out – book at www.newcastle.lizottes.com.au

“It is quite fortuitous that Tobiah was offered the role,” said choreographer Melissa Lanham, “As I only discovered in our first day of rehearsals that Tobiah has Dutch heritage, which lends a more personal resonance to his role. Not only is he perfectly cast as a dancer but his heritage allows him to draw on that history to bring truth to this character.”
VINCENT
The Man Behind the Brush Presented by LissaJane Dance with Gosling Productions. Simplified, Vincent is an extraordinarily moving contemporary dance theatre piece about the life of revered painter Vincent Van Gogh, his relationship with his brother Theo and his constant battle with his inner psyche. Scratch the surface and it’s clear that this is also a love story between a man who poured his emotions into his masterpieces and his beloved brother who tried to keep him from harm. This story, this show is so dear to me, that it truly must be seen to be believed. A moving piece of blended theatrics, dance, storytelling and technical brilliance – Vincent is a show I would hope can touch as many people as the paintings have.” Said Melissa.

INTOUCH WHAT'S ON
CREATOR MICHEAL CURRY
TEG Live, Stage Entertainment Productions and Twentieth Century Fox will bring the critically acclaimed smash hit Ice Age movies to life with Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure to Newcastle in March. We sat down with the show’s character creator, Michael Curry to find out a little bit about what it takes to stage such a big production. How did the Ice Age Live show come about? Our composers Martin and Ella fell in love with the movie and its characters. They are such musical people that they immediately saw it in musical terms. This quickly led to a musical sketch which naturally turned into a unique story. We all became excited about how much this Ice Age saga belonged on stage and that excitement created a momentum that Fox saw as well. The characters are so loved by families and kids. Was it difficult or easy to turn those movie characters into live characters? When characters are loved and so well known to the audience, it becomes easier to create a connection because the audience fills in all the blanks. My goal is to expand on the unique characteristics of each character and deliver the essentials. We find that the audience participates in a very active way because of their intimate knowledge of the characters from the films. Were any one of them harder to work on than any of the others? Yes, the characters that are relatively human in proportion where easier. Other characters such as the mammoths and Diego required much more inventive puppetry techniques. The challenge became making sure the human orientated characters could co-exist with the puppetry orientated characters. Apart from the characters we know about from the films, what new characters are in the show? We wanted to create a slightly different kind of journey story for our theatrical audience. We always like to bring something new when we interpret a film. We needed some bad guys for our story so we created these bird thugs. They are a threat to the Ice Age family they also are the springboard for some cool fight scenes that is something that is not found in the movie. 18 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
What about the skaters and performers – what do they contribute to the show? There would be no show without the performers they are the heart and energy of the spectacle. We were excited to combine high-level ice skating with high-level circus and dance. This is a first. Casting these amazing performers is a challenge because literally some of them have to be experts in skating, dancing, puppeteers and technical circus. The performers seem to be highly skilled skaters too – is it difficult to find such skilled skaters that can act and dance too? Where do these performers come from? High-level ice skaters are very involved in telling stories and visualising music. That makes them natural actors. They have to sell the idea through their skating skill. This is the talent of any high-level performer it is also important to note that we wanted our audience to experience an expanded and magical version of skating. How has the audience reaction been to the show until now? We have been all over in the last 3 years and we manage to get the same positive reaction. The main take away is that adult and children alike love it and go away singing the music. What do you like the most about the show? I like the complete variety in the show. A number of techniques we blend together is unprecedented. It is possible to throw too many things into a presentation and make it cluttered. We were very careful to ensure that our audiences will experience a very broad journey but capture a very simple story. What is the show about? How we are family even though we are different. It attempts to reach even the blended and broken family. Proving that accepting life as it is can lead to contentment.

INTOUCH HEALTH + WELLBEING
Favourite Aussie Meals causing problems for many. Vegemite toast, chicken schnitzel and even Grandma’s porridge could be the reason for pain and suffering for thousands of Australians. Around 1 in 70 Australians have coeliac disease, an immune disorder where the body reacts to a component in foods called gluten, which is found in wheat, oats, rye and barley. The immune response to gluten causes damage in the digestive tract which means painful tummies, bloating, diarrhoea and/or constipation, fatigue and in some, skin rashes. Currently, it is thought about 160,000 Australians have the disease but aren’t aware of it. Whilst eating foods containing gluten generally makes someone with coeliac very sick, the symptoms are similar to many other health issues making it hard to spot. Plus some people don’t experience the obvious abdominal indications. Treatment for coeliac disease is following a strict gluten free diet, so permanently off the shopping list are flour-based bread, pasta and pastries. Trickier to unearth are the foods where gluten is used in manufacturing to improve the texture including pre-made sauces and ice-cream. And chocolate, yes chocolate, commonly has gluten in it!
22 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
The sad story for the majority of people with coeliac disease is that it typically takes 3 or more years before diagnosis according to Coeliac Australia. Unfortunately, the longer someone with coeliac disease eats gluten containing foods, the higher their risk for some pretty serious conditions including: loss of fertility, migraine headaches and a greater chance of developing arthritis, thinning bones and autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes and autoimmune thyroid conditions. The good news is early diagnosis and treatment greatly reduces the chances of these complications so don’t ignore these common warning signs your body is sending you. The growth of manufactured gluten free foods reflects the dramatic increase in incidents of coeliac disease in the past 50 years in Australia. Unfortunately, scientists are not yet clear on the reason for this disturbing trend. The 13th - 20th of March is Coeliac Awareness Week and a great reminder to chat with your GP, naturopath or dietician about reoccurring, painful tummies, bloating, diarrhoea/ constipation and any skin rashes you might be experiencing.

ROAD TEST BŐR Organics Eye Love Skin Nourishing Eye Cream - By intouch Editor Di von Essen This deeply hydrating and firming eye cream contains gentle yet potent organic ingredients such as antioxidant-rich white tea, hydrating coconut, nourishing avocado and soothing rose hip oil to nourish the delicate area around the eyes for a younger and more youthful looking appearance. It immediately leaves skin feeling hydrated and supple, minimising the effects of age, fatigue and seasonal allergies.
TEST DRIVE The manufacturers claim that 6
weeks is all it takes to replenish lost vitamins and minerals, eliminate puffiness, plump fine lines, even out skin tone and dark circles and leave my skin feeling hydrated and supple. They provide a few atypical before and after shots to support this. Our test dummy (me!) has used the product for only 3 weeks (half the recommended time), but yes, I can definitely notice a difference – especially when it comes to those bags and dark circles I accumulated over Christmas/New Year.
WOULD I RECOMMEND IT? Yes I would – the product is really light and easy to apply. A little goes a long way and it delivers as promised. I also like that it is an organic product as I wear contact lenses and can be sensitive in the eye area. TRY IT YOURSELF The eye cream retails for $34.95 and is available nationally via www.bororganics.com

Halo Laser achieves remarkable results Since introducing the Halo laser last year, cosmetic medicine, laser and skin health clinic, The Mayah Clinic, has seen some remarkable results for patients. The Halo laser is the world’s first tunable hybrid fractional laser and the Mayah Clinic was the first Australian clinic to use this technology. The benefit of this laser compared to older technologies is achieving better results with far less down time than previously. Dr. Kathryn Holmes from The Mayah Clinic said "Halo laser can be used to treat acne scars, sun damage, fine lines or wrinkles, brown spots and large pores. We’re also pleased to see how well it functions in reducing redness."
Dr. Holmes said the fractional laser allows her to control the depth and coverage of two different laser wavelengths (ablative and non-ablative) simultaneously to customise every treatment. More aggressive settings may see more change from a single treatment, but less aggressive settings can allow even shorter downtimes to fit into a client’s schedule. Patients may need only one or two treatments. Dr. Holmes has 25 years’ experience in medicine and believes it’s very important that cosmetic medicine, laser and skin clinics have a qualified and experienced doctor always on site, monitoring patient care and carrying out the injectable and high end laser treatments. The Mayah Clinic, in Lakelands offers a range of services for both men and women including skin cancer checks, dermatology care, cosmetic services such as eye treatments and lip enhancements, laser therapy and skin care products. Visit www.themayahclinic.com.au for more information about The Mayah Clinic and the full range of services provided.

Anxiety is a condition of persistent and excessive worry. A person suffering from anxiety may feel agitated, overwhelmed, isolated, and have irrational thoughts. They may also experience trembling, racing heartbeat, churning stomach, and lack of focus. Anxiety can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to work and be part of a family and community. Anxiety can lead to other health issues such as depression, insomnia, and digestive problems. If you suffer from anxiety, you are not alone. Approximately 2 million other Australians suffer too. Fortunately, there are ways to decrease the symptoms and effects of anxiety. These include: 1. Eat small meals often – low blood sugar can lead to similar feelings of anxiety, such as trembling and erratic thoughts. Having small healthy meals frequently can help to decrease these feelings and provide consistent healing nutrients to best support your body during stressful periods. 2. Breathe, and breathe again – a loss of control is a key feature of anxiety. Stopping to take deep breaths can create space to bring a sense of calm. 3. Avoid stimulants – stimulants like caffeine can be stressful to an anxious person. Such stress can worsen symptoms and lead to poor
sleep. Quality sleep is crucial for good mental and physical health. 4. Exercise – moderate exercise, especially outdoors, is ideal for anxiety sufferers. It results in the release of feel-good hormones and increases energy and confidence.

WARNERS BAY
History and Discovery all in one place
Located at the northern end of Lake Macquarie, the historically significant and scenic lakeside suburb of Warners Bay offers a relaxed lifestyle complete with community events, alfresco dining and specialty shopping.
the New South Wales Royal Veteran Corp, obtained a grant of 1280 acres for the north-eastern portion of Lake Macquarie.
Named after its first settler – Jonathan Warner, Warners Bay is full of history and discovery and the perfect place to spend a day or a weekend with family and friends and a popular meeting place. It’s also a great spot to take some time for yourself as you shop or browse for chic fashion, charming collectables, affordable accessories and one of a kind jewellery in the variety of boutiques spread throughout the two main shopping precincts. Alternatively, enjoy a quiet lunch or cup of coffee at one of the many cafes or restaurants while taking in the spectacular views.
The Early Years Once home to the Awabakal People who lived on the foreshore of Lake Macquarie, Warners Bay is renowned for its beautiful and culturally significant sites and magnificent salt water lake which formed approximately 10,000 years ago when rising sea levels inundated the coast. Named ’Biddabah’ (the silent resting place) by the original inhabitants, here a number of freshwater creeks drained into the lake providing a resource rich environment for a range of water birds, fish, shellfish, terrestrial animals and plant species.
European Settlement The focus of white settlement was initially around the discovery of coal in the late eighteenth century, originating in Newcastle, then spreading to the shores of Lake Macquarie.
The land he selected was at Threlkeld’s original mission site, where he built a two-storey weatherboard house which he named ‘Biddaba’ on a hill near the present Warners Bay Primary School and set about establishing a farm and orchard. In addition to his sons, Warner had a number of assigned convicts to work on the farm and transport farm produce to Newcastle. In 1833, Warner was appointed Chamber Magistrate for Brisbane Water, which involved fortnightly horseback journeys to Gosford to attend court sittings which meant having to leave much of the establishment of the farm and orchard to his wife, sons and convict servants. In 1840, a portion of land from Warner's estate was allocated for a township in 1/4 acres lots. At that time the colony was in the grip of a land boom which was shortly followed by the depression and the land remained unsold. Warner died in 1842, leaving his widow to manage the estate. The Warner Homestead was demolished in 1932.
Warners Bay – Taking Shape In spite of numerous subdivisions, Warners Bay developed slowly during the first half of the 20th century and it was not until the end of petrol rationing and the widespread use of the private car that it gained popularity as a residential area.
Shortly after Threlkeld’s attempt to establish a mission in the area, in 1829, Jonathan Warner, a retired army lieutenant from
With spectacular views across Lake Macquarie, the Foreshore is a hub for recreational activity, specialty shopping, entertainment and dining. It’s also an important year round venue for community-based recreation and leisure activities that include walking, jogging, roller-blading, cycling, as well as significant festivals and large community events.
Annual events include The Hunter Track Classic, the
Newcastle Permanent Lake Macquarie Running Festival held each August, Rotary Club’s Loop the Lake at Speers Point on the 13th of March and Lake Macquarie City Farmers Market held at neighbouring Speers Point on the fourth Saturday of every the month. With its village atmosphere and unique combination of history, heritage and beauty, this bustling lakeside suburb is the ideal base to explore all that Lake Macquarie has to offer and has become a destination of note for food lovers and high quality retail shopping. With a surprising diversity of shops and stores for such a small town, it is little wonder that Warners Bay is so busy.
In 1931, a private bus service operated from Speers Point to Broadmeadow via Warners Bay and Charlestown. In 1937 it was converted to a government service and its route extended to include Newcastle. A railway line was also planned for Warners Bay but never eventuated.
The first non-Indigenous settlement in the area was a failed attempt by Reverend Threlkeld of the London Missionary Society, who in 1825 attempted to establish a mission among Warners Bay Primary School first opened as a provisional the Awabakal people at what is now Warners Bay. Where the Locals Meet...
Hippo Espresso + Brown Dog
Is there anything more appealing than the sound of grinding coffee, the smell of bacon and eggs and the spectacular views of the bay in the morning? Hippo Espresso, or more affectionately known as ‘Hippo’ opened its doors in 2008 and has since become an icon of the local café scene. With a reputation for being the place to meet, Hippo has twice undergone extensions to cope with the growing numbers of customers.
Popular amongst locals and visitors to this quaint lakeside town, with its casual sophistication, Hippo Espresso is a beacon of good food and great coffee. This laid-back eatery goes well beyond your run of the mill suburban café - instead Hippo has an inner city family feel about it, with plenty to entertain the little ones complete with indoor play area with toys and books. Also available are parent changing rooms, high chairs, privacy and kids meals. New owners Aaryn Algie and Joe Stapleton, who also own Brown Dog just a few doors down, are out to please and their philosophy is simple - to serve great food , deliver excellent customer service and provide a memorable dining experience at all times. Judging by the growing number of regulars that frequent Hippo each day, they are clearly heading in the right direction. Aaryn, who is also a qualified golf pro with a strong background in hospitality and Joe – an IT specialist, spent many months searching for the ideal location to open their restaurant and café business. For them, Warners Bay and the purchase of Hippo Espresso and Brown Dog ticked all the boxes. Open from 5.30am to 5.00pm every day, the menu at Hippo has something for everyone serving an all-day breakfast and a lunch menu that has everything from lights meals to fresh sandwiches, salads, wraps, burgers and schnitzels. They also offer BYO. So what makes Hippo Espresso so successful in an area that has no shortage of great restaurants and cafes? Is it the Toby’s Estate coffee, the spacious dining area, the family friendly atmosphere or the consistently fresh and tasty menu? Perhaps it’s the laid-back vibe and happy staff that look after your every need. Or is it that the abundant car parking out back? According to Aaryn it’s all of these things and more.
Just a little further down the esplanade is Brown Dog the trendy and yet relaxed local grill house with more that is attracting families and locals with its friendly vibe and varied menu. While sister restaurant (Hippo) can be described as being modern with a casual sophistication, the fit-out by the crew at Brown Dog is trendy, upbeat and a hint of industrial - with its polished concrete floor, slate columns, retro incandescent lightbulbs, long rustic timber tables and plenty of natural light coming through large bi-fold windows that open to the breezeway and also to a view of Lake Macquarie. Popular for coffee and lunches, Brown Dog is also licensed and open from 11am to late during the week. With breakfasts served on Saturday and Sunday, the opening times on weekends are from 8am to late. The menu is varied and renowned for its grilled hamburgers, steaks, ribs, fish, schnitzel and buffalo wings which are great value and also hard to beat. The house specialty of steak is slow cooked at a low heat for ultimate tenderness. Vegetarians are not forgotten, with a good choice of starters and burgers. Gluten free options are also available. With Brown Dog, the owners have created a family friendly, comfortable environment that is the perfect place to kick back and just take in the beauty of Lake Macquarie, while enjoying a barista made coffee, a glass of wine or a beer and having a bite to eat.
New owners - New attitude. Just what you want from your local grill house. Trendy and upbeat with a great selection of meals. Shared plates and starters, burgers, ribs, steaks, chicken, fish of the day, and schnitzel from the grill. Vegetarians are not forgotten.

Make sure your pet’s vaccinations and flea and worming treatments are up to date before setting off on your holiday 3. Proper planning can help avoid potential wedding disasters WORDS: Scott Webster
It’s no secret that I believe good food and wine are among the most important aspects of life. They are a major focus of our everyday living and even more so at special occasions, traditions and ceremonies. Regardless of culture or religion, food plays an important and significant role when it comes to big celebrations - especially weddings. And when your average Australian wedding can cost in excess of $20,000, you want to make sure you’re getting your value for money when it comes to the marriage feast.
when your guests reject the planned menu and request a yeast, gluten, sugar or dairyfree alternative on the actual day and en masse! Again, always good to check dietary needs and let the caterers know in advance. And let’s also just spare a thought for the chefs behind the scenes. Dealing with demanding clients with very high expectations and sometimes serving hundreds of guests at one time can create enormous stress in the kitchen, especially when the food is a big part of fulfilling a couple’s dream day as any unfortunate mishaps could be recalled for years to come. But don’t forget, if it all gets too much and the stress of anything going wrong on your big day is building, it’s likely to be all over within a few hours – or you could always elope!
What’s served at the reception banquet can either make or break such an occasion. Whatever your style or budget, the experience and expertise of a quality caterer or chef can help manage at least three potential big day disasters. Allergic reactions – unfortunate for the guest, the bride and groom, and chef! Reactions, food sensitivities and intolerances are many, varied, and on the increase so make sure your chef is fully aware of any specific details of any guests.

If the worst should happen, don’t hesitate to call for medical assistance immediately. Food-related illness – easy to avoid if you use a professional catering service, however, it is harder to manage if your venue selection is outdoors and served on an unshaded table in the middle of a summer heat wave. Finicky guests – this one’s a bit tricky. It’s incredibly frustrating for a caterer or chef

THE BENEFITS OF LOCAL OLIVE OIL Like wine, the acidity and flavour of olive oils vary - some are bold and peppery, others mild and buttery, and some contain higher antioxidant and health benefits. By heading to a local olive centre you not only get to learn about and taste the differences, but you are buying from the source. Unlike wine that often gets better with age, olive oil is better within the first 12 months; reputable olive centres turn over their stock seasonally, and you can trust that age won't be an issue! TRY Adina Vineyard on Lovedale Road Hunter Valley Liqueurs, Baerami Olives at the HVG Shopping Village or The Hunter Olive Centre at Pokolbin Estate on McDonalds Road.

Californian Crooner Chris Isaak returns to the Hunter Valley Roundhouse Entertainment are delighted to present Grammy-nominated Californian crooner Chris Isaak in a day on the green at Bimbadgen, Hunter Valley on Saturday, April 9th. Isaak will be touring the country for the first time since 2006 and will be joined by James Reyne, Richard Clapton and Thirsty Merc. Isaak’s love affair with Australia is no secret; he is currently a judge on The X Factor Australia, boasts an unparalleled eleven ARIA top twenty albums across his 30-year career, and has sold upwards of a million albums in Australia alone. Three of his albums – Forever Blue, Wicked Game and The Best Of – boast Australian sales of over triple platinum accreditation, and the latest release First Comes The Night (out now via Universal Music) is set to follow, debuting at #2 on the ARIA Album Chart only a few weeks ago. The twelve-track release is Isaak’s thirteenth studio album, mostly written and recorded in Nashville at the recommendation of long-time friend Stevie Nicks, and is his first album of original songs in six years. Hunter audiences will be treated to an inspired performance of tracks from First Comes The Night as well as long-running hits like Wicked Game, Forever Blue, Baby Did A Bad, Bad Thing and Somebody’s Crying, all injected with Isaak’s sly sense of humour and raw charisma. Isaak has never missed a show in his threedecade long career and his relentless touring schedule has earned him the reputation as one of the funniest and most enigmatic live performers in the industry. Isaak performed five a day on the green concerts in 2006
including Bimbadgen, in one of the most popular concert series the event has seen. Joining Isaak at all shows will be local legend James Reyne. For more than three decades, Reyne’s songs have been the sound of the Australian summer, selling more than 2 million albums in the process. Lucky audiences will be treated to hits including Reckless, Boys Light Up and Motor’s Too Fast together for the first time on his forthcoming album All The Hits – Live. Richard Clapton has endeared himself to music lovers everywhere through his heartfelt inspired performances and a songbook that defines our times. With hits like Girls On The Avenue, Deep Water, Capricorn Dancer and I Am An Island, the ARIA Hall of Famer is a stellar addition to the line-up. Thirsty Merc released their first album of new material in five years Shifting Gears in September 2015 utilising the crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic. With the new songs being well received by fans and their classic radio staples 20 Good Reasons, SomedaySomeday and In The Summertime, Thirsty Merc is back on the road. HANDMADE IN THE HUNTER In 2011, Hunter Valley local Karen Rowe created Handmade in the Hunter Markets after she got tired of going to supposedly “handmade” markets, only to discover that the products were “handmade” in Bali or Thailand and not made by the person selling them.
On Saturday 16th April, Handmade in the Hunter Markets will celebrate their 5th birthday with their biggest market ever! While it is their birthday, the market is really about giving back, with free slices of birthday cake, giveaways, raffles and fundraising for Pokolbin Fire Brigade with kids able to explore the fire trucks and meet the crew. Good Vibes - The Gum Ball 2016
Introducing the Hunter Valley's
Let the Good Times Roll… After taking a year off following the celebration of its tenth anniversary in 2014, the Hunter Valley’s very own Gum Ball Music and Arts Festival is returning in April running from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th. Held each year at "Dashville" – a bushland estate located at Belford in the Hunter Valley, The Gum Ball is described as a slice of true country gold, a unique, inspiring and relaxing weekend away for families and people of all ages. In 2004, the idea to start their very own music festival, became a reality for two musician brothers Matt and Dan Johnston. Using the front paddock of their parents 100 acre bush property at Belford, they converted a sprawling bush paddock into what is now one of Australia's most loved boutique music festivals. "There's a lot of people out there who have been going to festivals for years or used to go to festivals before they settled down and had children. The Gum Ball has become an example of what festivals used to be like - an annual pilgrimage where you can bring your family and everybody can be comfortable and have a great time" said Matt. The biggest part of The Gum Ball is no doubt the musical discovery. Having a reputation for selecting some of Australia’s greatest established and emerging acts, locally and abroad - creating a diverse musical programme for the ultimate live music experience.

Think of your wedding venue as an extension of your theme… this way, you’ll choose with all the right ideas in mind. And since you live in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie, you have your pick of numerous beautiful beach, vineyard and lake venues, stunning hotels, breathtaking landmarks and views.

So you're engaged... Now what?
Congratulations! You’ve just got engaged and are feeling on top of the world, but what comes next is guaranteed to give you sleepless nights if not tackled properly and in a timely manner. Planning your wedding day is one of the most exciting things you will get to do but, as many brides before you would confess, there is also much that can go wrong on your big day. Your wedding day comes and goes so quickly - one minute you’re walking up the aisle with all eyes on you and the next, you’re sipping cocktails on a beach somewhere – it’s a complete blur and it all happens so fast that the details are easily forgotten. Just make sure all the most important arrangements - photographer, wedding venue and guest invitations are prioritised high on your wedding planning list and you’ll be fine!
OK - so you have set the date, both families have agreed on the budget, you’ve chosen your official wedding party and have started an inspiration scrapbook for all the things you like – dresses, decorative ideas, cake designs, floral arrangements… Everything! You have an idea of the guest list and are ready to send out save the date cards. You are now ready to start sorting through a handful of ceremony and reception locations with a view to meet with the wedding event co-ordinator to talk through packages and pricing. When it comes to planning your big day, the venue is usually the first major decision you need to make together. Not only is it often the biggest expense, but it is often difficult to plan anything else until this has been finalised, as your wedding venue choice will often decide the style and potential size of your wedding.
Fortunately, the choice of venues these days is incredibly diverse. Couples can choose to pledge their vows at a rustic winery, a beachside retreat, an open park, an ornate cathedral or small country chapel. Start your decision-making process by putting ideas on paper. Start with a list of your dream locations and then make a practical list of the benefits and drawbacks each provides. Do you want a wedding with a touch of tradition or do you want a more modern theme? Is being outdoors important? Are you prepared for a change in the weather? Popular locations like wineries are frequently used as wedding venues are beautiful and practical but are often booked well in advance. As your ideas come together, it is also important to be realistic about your own organisational skills and available time. You might find the perfect private beach that seems ideal for a wedding, but managing details like how the reception tent will be delivered and where guests will stay and park can create a great deal of stress. Above all, remember that while finding the right venue is partly about pleasing others, it is ultimately your wedding and your special day. So when making a compromise between your vision and what is practical becomes a challenge, just remember that reward will come in the form of a lifetime of wonderful memories.
One final tip... Enjoy the search! Much like that search for the perfect partner, it’s rare to find the right one straight away and the same can be said for your venue. Relish the time spent Choosing a wedding venue is far more than just locality and exploring the options together and make it fun. Finding the right finding a spot with charm – instead it's about meeting all the location doesn’t have to be a stressful experience as long as needs you have as a bride. Most importantly your wedding you learn from each visit. You will know when you have found venue MUST suit your personality and the mood you are trying to create for your wedding, be it formal, retro, funky, alternative, 'the one' as you won’t be able to imagine spending your wedding relaxed or vintage. It’s about how you want to feel on the day. It day anywhere else! also has to be the right size, price and it must compliment the two of you.

DAZZLING and daring Gorgeous Gowns
Bronx and Banco Mishka dress
By Katherine Ashton www.KatherineAshtonStyling.com
Only a few boutiques have stood the test of time on Charlestown’s Pacific Highway and Gorgeous Gowns is amongst this list. Being a stones throw from Charlestown Square, the boutiques and specialty stores that line the streets face tough competition from ‘The Square’. On entering Gorgeous Gowns, I’m instantly impressed by the range of exquisite, dazzling, daring, and beautiful pieces lining the walls. I quickly realise that Gorgeous Gowns is offering everything from Mother of the Bride, Bridal, Evening and Race Wear. Vera, the owner, is an absolute delight. She is fun, warm, down-to-earth and knows her customer. Vera doesn’t believe in telling a client something looks great for the sake of a sale, nor does she try and squeeze a square peg into a round hole. Vera listens to what her customer wants and if she can’t help she provides genuine advice as to where else to try. I know this because I witnessed it in store with Vera when gathering information for this article. Vera likes to experiment with different labels to ensure that her customers demands are met and her current list includes; Sherri Hill, Elle
Zeitoune, Bronx & Banco, Jovani, Pizzuto, Rose Noir, Giselle & Sophia, Lounge, and Langhem. Vera started Gorgeous Gowns in 2009 in a smaller store on Pacific Highway and in 2012 expanded into a larger store a few shops down. Vera spent 32 years as a legal secretary but always had a keen eye for fashion, travelling down to Sydney every second weekend as a girl with her mum to source quality pieces for her wardrobe. When she decided it was time for a career change, her love of fashion and bringing it back to Newcastle came to the forefront and so she created “Gorgeous Gowns”. Gorgeous Gowns really does cater for women of all ages and sizes. They also stock a fabulous range of jewellery, headpieces and clutches to compliment your gown.

Tamburlaine Real Weddings Stefanie & Nathan By Emily Morton – Tamburlaine Organic Wines
Stefanie and Nathan held their wedding on the private grounds of Tamburlaine Organic Wines, in Pokolbin. Classical and romantic, with a petal lined aisle, the couple exchanged vows under shading iron bark trees. Their reception followed, on-site at the Tamburlaine Lodge.

6 ways Bathers Way will now cater to everyone 1. Path width has increased to a minimum of 4 metres 2. Stairs have been removed 3. Path gradients have been reduced where possible 4. Bathers Way now more accessible for all Newcastle's coastline is one of the city's greatest assets, increasingly being recognised at local, national and international levels for its beauty, environmental values, recreational opportunities and diverse range of activities. Newcastle's beaches receive more than two million visits per year and are a hub of community activities and the venue for a range of experiences.
wide asphalt footpath. It was congested, inaccessible for many and struggling to cope with the volume of people wishing to access the coast, with up to 500 people an hour trying to use the path in some locations. It was very clear to the design team that they needed to create enough space for everyone to actually realise the potential of our coastline. This meant providing facilities for an incredibly diverse range of uses and ensuring the path itself could cater for surfers, wheelchair users, pram-pushers, skateboarders, scooters and everything in between. Wheelchair users can now access more of the city’s coastline path, following an awardwinning upgrade that has resulted in the use of the path almost doubling, according to Newcastle City Council.
The Bathers Way path connects Newcastle's beaches, covering 6km of the city's coastline between Merewether Ocean Baths to Nobby's Beach. Council committed to upgrading the Bathers Way when it asked the community to To date, approximately 50% of the Bathers Way rank the most important projects needed along has been upgraded, with the path between their coast. Due to the topographic nature of some sections of the path, the Bathers Way won't be accessible for its full length. However, Heidi says Council is mindful of providing access wherever possible and achieve compliant grades for approximately twothirds of the path. In addition to the path, Council is exploring options for providing wheelchair access onto some Newcastle beaches and seeking grants to upgrade Surf Clubs.

The upgrade has also received industry recognition, with Merewether Beach being awarded the Planning Institute of Australia's "Plan to Place" award at State level. In addition to upgrading the path, Council is also creating better spaces for people to enjoy the coastal environment by improving new shade and seating areas, viewing platforms, picnic areas and lighting.

Do you hear the word ‘Easter’ and clutch your tummy with dread?! Would you like to enjoy a creamy chocolate Easter Egg but fear the consequences? Could you be lactose intolerant? These days lactose intolerance is very common. Lactose intolerance means that your body cannot easily digest lactose, a type of natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. Normally, the body breaks down lactose with a digestive enzyme called lactase. If you do not have enough lactase, the lactose will not be properly digested when it moves through your digestive system. This can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as flatulence, tummy pain, diarrhoea and bloating. If you think you may have lactose intolerance, it’s imperative to have intolerance testing performed before removing dairy products from your diet as these foods are rich sources of nutrients. Sometimes people with lactose intolerance are able to eat small amounts
of dairy products such as cheese or yoghurt without suffering any unpleasant symptoms. The friendly and qualified team at Mojo Health can help you if you think you may have a dairy intolerance. We offer intolerance testing as well as a wide range of dairy free options. We also stock dairy and gluten free Easter Eggs, Certified Organic Easter Eggs and carob (caffeine free) Easter Eggs. Passion for the written word at the Newcastle Writers Festival WORDS: Michelle Meehan
Very few authors enter into a life of writing realistically expecting their endeavours to end in fame and fortune. They simply do it for the love of it. The same could be said for Newcastle journalist Rosemarie Milsom who, over four years ago, decided to channel her passion for books and her experiences at writer’s festivals into a plan to establish her own fully-fledged literary event right here in the Hunter.
and veteran journalist Kerry O’Brien, who will talk about his biography of former prime minister Paul Keating.
It was a challenging task full of long nights and early mornings, juggling the demands of the festival organisation with the responsibilities of a full-time job and a young family.
This year’s festival will also include an expanded line-up of panel discussions, looking at everything from coal and climate change to domestic violence and the future of regional Australia, as well discussions on how the terrorist attacks in Paris have shaped our view of the French capital.
Pictured Rosemarie Milsom
There were few personal financial rewards for all her time and effort – budgets are tight for a festival of this sort - but of course, that’s not what Rosemarie was seeking anyway.
“I suppose being a journalist I’m always aware of sessions that respond to what’s going on in the world at the time… I‘m always looking at issues that are happening,” she said. Media panel discussion with Christina Koutsoukos, Erik Jensen, Chris Uhlmann + Paul Scott. Photo Credit: Chris Patterson at Intervision
“It’s about engaging with books… It’s just that buzz you get from a really well-written book and I’ve never lost that, I’ve had that all my life and that never tires because there’s always new and exciting books and brilliant new writers who are emerging.
“Also, I suppose as a journalist I really value good writing, it’s what drove me as a journalist and it still drives me actually… good writers are really precious.” After talking the idea through with various people and finding it had support in the community, the first Newcastle Writer’s Festival leapt off the page and into venues across the city in 2013. Far from being a second-rate regional affair compared to its big city counterparts, Rosemarie secured a solid line-up of highly acclaimed writers including award-winning Australian author Robert Drewe, media commentator Jane Caro, journalist David Marr and much-loved British actor and new Australian citizen, Miriam Margolyes, who delivered the keynote address.
“Yes it is smaller (than the other festivals), but I don’t think it’s smaller in ambition; it might be smaller in scale but I think the calibre of writers we get and the nature of the program is very ambitious.” “Word got around after the first festival and it was nothing but positive. I owe a big debt to those writers who came along and participated in the first festival because we were unproven and they trusted that I knew what I was going and supported the very first one. “To build the festival I’ve had to call in so many favours and people have been really generous. From publishers helping 52 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
me get their talent to the festival, from volunteers, from local organisations funding us – I just feel really privileged, to be honest, it is a privilege and I love it,” Rosemarie said. Since the inaugural year, the festival has gone from strength to strength and in 2016, it will feature 140 writers participating in almost 70 sessions across five main venues over three days from April 1―3, 2016. It will dive straight into some of its brightest and best on the first day of the event, with Olympic gold medallist Leisel Jones sharing the highs and lows of life in the fast lane with former Newcastle sports journalist Brett Keeble over lunch at the Crowne Plaza. This will be followed up by Rosemarie’s pick as one of the real highlights of the program, the opening night event - Tim Flannery’s Excellent Adventures. From the discovery of a new tree kangaroo species in New Guinea to dinosaur fossils in Victoria, the well-known scientist, explorer, environmentalist and former Australian of the Year has forged a unique path throughout his career. “He’s been an explorer, a scientist, a palaeontologist, he’s discovered dinosaur bones, he has trekked through the jungles of New Guinea and uncovered new tree kangaroo species... I think he’s just interesting as a person and he’s a fantastic speaker.” Other highlights of the diverse three-day program will include respected indigenous journalist Stan Grant, who is passionate about creating unity between Aboriginal and non-Indigenous Australians, the best-selling author of Baby Love, Robin Barker, looking at families, feminism and her foray into fiction
“Writer’s festivals have moved very much into the discussion of issues area, I’ve noticed that a lot over the last five years and those sessions tend to be very successful. People want to go and listen to writers talk about their books of course, particularly if it’s a very successful or well-known book, but they also want to see writers talking about other issues. “I think audiences are really just hungry for ideas and debate. There’s something about having it live and having it in front of you, it’s not edited, it’s not condensed into a mainstream media format, it has that immediacy and also that dynamic between people on a panel that you get when you see it live.” The festival also includes a diverse and exciting program coordinated by the Newcastle Regional Library aimed at primary school-aged children. Rosemarie said it was important that they also catered for the next generation of readers and writers. “Some of the children we have get really excited about meeting their favourite writer, you can just see it and it’s like a spark,” she said. “We all want to encourage literacy, it’s crucial that as a community that we support literacy and that starts at school and ultimately I don’t think we could ever have a main festival without helping children.” Head to www.newcastlewritersfestival.org.au for the complete program. There is a mixture of ticketed sessions and free events, with almost half of the program open to the public at no cost. Ticketed sessions are on sale via www.ticketek.com or 4929 1977 unless otherwise stated.
WIN
She, like the authors she was booking to speak at the event, was simply driven by her passion for the written word.
Given Rosemarie’s long background in journalism, it is little wonder the festival has such a strong link with current affairs.
We have 2 x double passes for the opening night on April 1st to give away! Visit the GIVEAWAYS page at www.intouchmagazine.com.au for details.

INTOUCH FAMILY AND COMMUNITY “We are thrilled the course continues to attract both males and female apprentices- smashing stereotypes of what has long been regarded as a male dominated industry,” Mr Wolter said. The Program continues to capture the interest of industry partners including Port Waratah Coal Services and Novaskill, who have recently joined the program as employers.
By Emily Gallagher for Hunter TAFE
Enrolments in the Hunter TAFE Mining Skills Program, at our Muswellbrook Campus, are up by 18% on last year’s figures and so too are the number of industry partners. The award-winning Program is designed for 1st-year apprentices and places a strong emphasis on safety awareness. The Program recently commenced for the 11th consecutive year and covers training in basic hand tool skills across 4 different trades including Electrical, Fitting and Machining, Metal Fabrication and Welding and Automotive.
To support graduates of the Mining Skills Centre and encourage them to advance their career with a post trade qualification with Hunter TAFE, the Mining Electrical and Mining Mechanical Engineering Society (MEMMES) has generously made a donation to the Hunter TAFE Foundation to establish two Scholarships. The MEMMES Scholarships will support one electrical graduate and one mechanical graduate, providing them with financial support to assist with the commitment to further education.
Hunter TAFE Faculty Director, Rob Wolter, believes the strong enrolment figures are a nod to the sustained quality of the innovative program that prepares students with the skills, knowledge and experience to be job ready upon completion of the 15-week course.

Nobbys Lighthouse Inclusion Project
While the premises standards for the Nobbys Lighthouse Inclusion Project do not cover external approaches, such as the pedestrian approach to Nobbys headland, Newcastle Now BIA has not dismissed future access for people with a disability. Newcastle Now Business Improvement Association has successfully completed a $22K project to make the popular Nobbys Lighthouse site more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
The Grant money was used to firstly engage an accredited company, BCA Access Solutions, to undertake an access audit of the Nobbys Lighthouse site and prepare a report to offer recommendations for improving access for people with a disability on an interim basis.

Additionally, the report addressed the disability requirements that would be required for any future permanent site works.
People with accessibility requirements are currently required to contact site management and access the site via private vehicle and this is limited to times outside of opening hours due to the potential risk with a high number of pedestrians using the access way during this time. Newcastle Now BIA is in the process of preparing an application for the revitalisation of the Nobbys Lighthouse site, and in the future hopes to offer a shuttle service to include people with a disability during site opening hours. Nobbys Lighthouse grounds are open to the public from 10 am to 4 pm every Sunday, with a small kiosk in operation serving coffee, bacon and egg rolls, retro jaffles and sandwiches. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 53

Get Professional Advice when Choosing Fabrics WORDS Di von Essen Deciding on the right fabric for upholstery and soft furnishings is always confusing as there’s a plethora of products out there and the wrong choice can be very costly. This month the team at insideout share their thoughts when it comes to choosing the right fabrics for your home. When it comes to choosing fabrics for hightraffic areas, Deborah Bartlett of insideout says that European mills produce some of the best fabric and have done for hundreds of years. “Technology has come a long way and combined with years of experience these mills produce some of the most beautiful and durable products on the market. PVC has also been replaced with PU polyurethane to prevent cracking and splitting as with the old PVC. These “ultra-fabrics” come in a vast range of colours and patterns and are an excellent choice for commercial use” she said. Deborah also says it's essential to ask for advice when choosing fabric – especially if you have never done so before. “Individual fabric
houses such as Mokum (an NZ firm) have beautiful fabrics and with years of experience, really know their yarns,” she said. Have you ever wondered why the price of materials varies so much? Deborah says that the best fabric mills use a continuous length of yarn to weave the fabric whereas some less expensive mills will weave small lengths of yarn together and this is what causes pilling. Technology has also produced some beautiful yarn that is coated to resist stains and of course, this all adds to the price. Of course, our homes are filled with soft furnishings and each piece will have its own unique requirements when it comes to the fabric used:
Sofas and occasional furniture The amount of
use a piece of furniture will get and whether it will be exposed to the elements or sunlight will determine the best fabric to use. Fabrics have ratings on the lasting quality and also UV stability. Some fabrics are far more resistant to stains than they use to be and an alternative to using leather.
Curtains are tricky and it's always best to
have expert advice in this area. Insideout enlist the assistance of a professional to help out in store and Deborah says her advice is up to date with fabrics and design. “Some fabrics don’t require a backing where some do, sometimes a beautiful sheer fabric suitable for outdoors is a better choice and that’s where expert advice is needed,” she said.
