From the Editors... Newcastle Museum is known for its ability to highlight a milestone through exhibition and this month celebrate a milestone of their own - 5 years since the doors of the Honeysuckle facility opened. Much has happened over that time. Countless exhibitions, alterations, permanent displays and special events have seen the Museum welcome hundreds of thousands of people through those doors, all excited to discover what lies behind. This month we speak to Museum Director Julie Baird about the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to put an exhibition together, her favourite exhibitions and what lies ahead for the Museum. Variety is known for many different things and a quick poll of locals about what Variety does for the community produces a wide range of responses – many of them centred on highly decorative bash cars and big parties! It becomes apparent that this muchloved children’s charity is difficult to place in one bucket, but in short, Variety helps kids and their families by providing financial support for things and experiences when they can’t afford it and no government assistance is available. This month we welcome the Variety of Chefs Gala Dinner to Newcastle with 5 incredible chefs providing diners with a night of culinary delights and the big audacious goal of raising $100K for this amazing organisation. Pipe bands, Marching Koalas, Variety Bash cars and community groups will all be out in force converging on the main street of Wallsend this month for the annual Wallsend Winter Fair with over 30,000 people expected to turn out across the full day of this family-friendly event. Keep an eye out for baby dinosaurs that will pop up at Stockland Wallsend throughout the day! At this time of the year there’s a major focus on our health and wellbeing, probably due to the cold weather and proliferation of bugs and lurgies that make their way into our workplaces, schools and homes. We speak to the professionals about how to safeguard ourselves and why having an open conversation with your GP may be a better idea than consulting Dr. Google! Finally, for all the Pokèmon hunters out there, you will find one amongst our pages this month, so get hunting! Enjoy!

TOPFIVEONFIVE Top Book BUSHRANGER TRACKS By Gregory Powell Local author and retired school teacher Gregory Powell combined his interest in bushwalking and history to explore (on foot) scenic and historic regions to create this book – which was 40 years in the making. Powell delves into the movements of individuals and gangs through time. Read about the Ned Kelly gang, Captain Starlight, Ben Hall and many other bushrangers of our colonial past. With a keen imagination, each historic location can transport the modern day explorer back to the wild days of the early settlement when gold glittered, guns blazed, and men and women struggled just to survive. Bushranger Tracks is possibly the most comprehensive record of bushranger sites ever published. The fascinating journey into Bushranger history begins at a farm at Boorolite near Mansfield in Victoria where the author came face to face with the Kelly story. Available at all good bookstores. RRP $24.99.

DAMI IM - YESTERDAY ONCE MORE Belmont 16s
MEEREA PARK 2015 ‘Terracotta’ Chardonnay
2013 X-Factor winner, singer songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Dami Im not only has an incredibly distinctive voice, but she possesses an innate understanding of how truly great songs are created. This month, Dami and her band come to Belmont 16s with her 'Yesterday Once More' Classic Carpenters album tour, where she pays a breathtaking homage to one of her idols, Karen Carpenter. With her intention not to copy the Carpenters voice or tone, Dami has set out to reinvent the joy, innocence and rawness of classics such as There's a Kind of Hush, A Song for You, plus many more. Don't miss your chance to see why Dami Im has become one of Australia's favourite musicians! See her live at Belmont 16s on Saturday, August 27th.
Meerea Park Chardonnays are usually sourced off the sandy river bed loam soils of the Lower Hunter region. This is the first ‘Individual Vineyard’ Chardonnay they have purposely made from the lower yielding red clay/basalt soil, giving it the ‘Terracotta’ name. 2015, while not perfect ripening conditions, has still produced great fruit off well-kept old-vine vineyards. Tasting - Bright mid-straw in colour, this wine possesses aromas of stone-fruit, nuts and spice. The palate is refined and features nectarine and peach fruit flavours. Oak is very secondary and in harmony with the fruit. Clean zesty acid completes the package. The perfect accompaniment to fresh seafood, in particular, ocean trout and salmon. Cellaring - Drink now or cellar for 5 to 10 years.

CARRINGTON PLACE - Carrington
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS - THE MOVIE The ever glamorous, self-indulgent and absolutely fabulous Edina and Patsy, are now in their 60's, with Edina still running her (dying) PR agency. They still ooze glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London's trendiest hot-spots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, the two become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more! Absolutely Fabulous is in cinemas August 4th.
Photo of the Month
A complete renovation and restoration of the property transformed this disused former dockworkers hotel in one of Newcastle's rapidly developing harbourside suburbs into a beautiful and modern guest house with its own, very popular, wine bar, café and dining room. The formula for success was completed when the owner, Scott Webster, returned to his hometown of Newcastle to offer patrons the benefit of his 30 years experience working in and owning, some of the best restaurants in the world. A stone's throw from the harbour with its yacht club, the local fishing fleet and Fisherman's Co-op, Carrington Place offers guests high-quality guest house style accommodation coupled with an exceptional food and wine experience, all at reasonable prices and close to transport and beaches. Perfect for a great night out, your next ‘stay-cation’ or a top spot to park the rellies when they next visit!

NEWCASTLE MUSEUM TURNS 5! WORDS: MICHELLE MEEHAN
It’s not hard to feel a sense of belonging when you visit the Museum – after all, many of the stories it tells are so uniquely our own and Julie says that highlighting this sense of who we are and where we come from is at the Museum’s core.
Newcastle Museum is known for its ability to acknowledge a milestone through exhibition - 25 years since the Newcastle earthquake, 40 years of “Our whole vision and mission statement is about how to be a the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. But this centre for and about Newcastle,” she said. month the Museum will turn its focus to a more “We connect with the community in a couple of different ways personal anniversary – five years since it opened we’re always trying to tell local stories, and we’re always trying the doors to its home at the historic Honeysuckle to have exhibits that reflect Newcastle’s experience because Railway Workshops. that’s the one thing that makes us different and makes us so
Some of these stories are told through the Museum’s permanent displays, including one of its founding exhibitions, Fire and Earth. Bringing to life two major industries that have dominated the identity, landscape and people of the Hunter, Fire and Earth invites visitors into the belly of the beast, allowing them to experience the heat, danger and hard work of coal mining and the BHP’s Newcastle Steelworks.
Another permanent feature at the Museum is A Newcastle Story – a multifaceted depiction of the true character of the city in all special - we’re about Newcastle and the Hunter and that’s what its beauty, grit, colour and life. A lot has happened in that time: countless exhibitions have we do. come and gone, new additions and alterations have been made Visitors are taken on a journey through time as they explore to the permanent displays, and hundreds of thousands of “For us, we don’t think we can do this in isolation, we see Newcastle’s natural environment, early Aboriginal life, history people have passed through those doors excited to explore all ourselves as being part of a greater net. and beliefs; discovering the answers to how and why we are a the Museum has to offer. distinct and fascinating community. “Newcastle has changed an awful lot over the past few years And while it is clearly high on the to-do lists of tourists in the city, and certainly this area has changed a lot since we’ve been here The themes covered in A Newcastle Story were developed the core of its visitors - around two-thirds - come from within the and I think it’s like a weird symbiotic relationship – we tell the following extensive community consultation – once again Newcastle and Hunter local government areas. story of Newcastle and as Newcastle changes, we change as reinforcing the community’s crucial place within the heart and well.” soul of the Museum. A travelling exhibition that settled in at the Museum from October 2015 through to March this year, it was an innovative, multimedia experience developed and co-presented by the Australian Museum. It was also the largest exhibition Newcastle Museum had ever hosted – a real blockbuster that featured large-scale, immersive projections, multi-touch technologies and a dramatic array of fossils and casts of tyrannosaurs including more than 10 life-sized dinosaur specimens. “It takes a lot of time – the Westpac Rescue Helicopter one that ran through June and July, that’s a year that we were talking to them and working together.
“No-one’s going to come to the museum and learn everything there is to know about one thing, but people are going to come to the museum and they’re going to learn a lot about all the different stories that we’ve got in our town, they’re going to start a fascination with science, they’re going to learn about what their grandad did at BHP.
Of course, it’s not all about looking back, with an exciting line-up of exhibitions set to descend on the Museum in coming months. First up will be Circle, which brings to life the latest book (of the same name) by children’s author and illustrator Jeannie Baker (see more about this fascinating exhibition on page 8).

CIRCLE a fusion of art, literature and science Award-winning children’s author and artist Jeannie Baker's latest, much anticipated picture book, Circle, is coming to Newcastle Museum as a remarkable exhibition this month. Circle opens Friday 5th August as part of the Museum's 5th birthday celebration and will run to 30th October.
Experience the wonder of the Bar-Tailed Godwit as it undertakes the longest unbroken migration on earth as seen through the artwork of award-winning children’s book artist and author, Jeannie Baker.
Each year, Bar-tailed Godwits (Limosa lapponica baueri) undertake the longest unbroken migration of any animal when they fly from their breeding grounds in Alaska to Australia and New Zealand. They follow invisible pathways in the sky, which they have followed for thousands of years.

theolivetreemarket.com.au In order to create Circle, Jeannie Baker made her own journeys across the globe to observe godwits. “I travelled to the wild, remote landscapes of Alaska and then to China and South Korea, where it was alarming to see the enormous extent of the reclamation and rapid loss of mudflats, the godwits (and other birds) depend on for food," she said. Baker's work conveys the sheer wonder of this giant migratory ‘circle of life’, but also reminds us to reflect on the importance of the world’s remaining wetlands. "Everything in nature is interdependent and connected and changes we make in one place can cause a chain reaction in other places, even at the opposite end of the world.” The combination of exquisitely detailed and textured collages with the fascinating science of our natural world has created an exhibition which not only celebrates the Godwit’s remarkable flight as it comes full circle, but also travels following the flight path of the Bar-tailed Godwit at venues nationally and internationally. The exhibition tour is organised by Newcastle Museum.
Meet the Author! Author-artist Jeannie Baker will visit Newcastle Museum to speak about her latest book Circle and her journey around the globe observing the migratory journey of the Bar-tailed Godwits. Come and meet her from 5:30pm8pm Thursday 25th August in the Museum Theatrette. This is a free event however bookings are essential. Phone 4974 1401.

Often asked why he spends so much time on our shores, Arj has this to say: “From my first show, I knew I wanted to be a comedian for life, and set out to find my audience. At the moment, the bulk of that audience is in Australia, so that’s where you’ll find me. I don’t know exactly why it turned out this way, but I’m very thankful to have found my fans, even if they happen to be on the other side of the world!” Collectively, Arj’s stand-up clips on YouTube have garnered millions of hits, and his popularity is likely to rise even further given his manic touring schedule. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, Harris is a truly unique voice in contemporary music. He is a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader who has carved out his own niche in blues. Harris began his career as a New Orleans street singer, traveling throughout the southern U.S. In his early 20s, he lived in Cameroon, West Africa for a year, which had a profound effect on his later work. He has recorded many of the older songs while also creating an original version of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. Although well versed in the early history of blues guitar, he's no well-mannered preservationist, mixing a considerable
In 2016 the world will commemorate 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. This anniversary year sees one of his greatest plays brought to life by this outstanding Australian theatre company. With only three performances at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre (8th and 9th September), Othello is a saga that probes the human capacity for petty jealousies and revenge, while revelling in the sheer wickedness of malicious manipulations. A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion. A warrior on the fields of war, felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous rage when he is betrayed by his military brother-in-arms, the cynically destructive Iago. One of William Shakespeare’s most famous and passionate tragedies, Othello will be directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Peter Evans, in a gripping production that will touch audiences to their core, as envy is a weapon wielded with brazen savagery, and the complex, contradictory nature of humanity is tested.
Starring Ray Chong Nee (Bell Shakespeare’s The Dream and MTC’s I Call My Brothers) as Othello and Yalin Ozucelik (Bell Shakespeare’s Henry IV and STC’s Cyrano de Bergerac) as Iago in one of Shakespeare’s most captivating and devastating pairings, this astonishing epic tragedy will rage with jealousy on stages across Australia in Bell Shakespeare’s 2016 National Tour. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, you’re about to meet some of Shakespeare’s greatest characters: The ultimate flawed hero, his brave and devoted wife, and his conniving, deceitful best friend. Othello includes several lines and phrases that are still well known today, including “the green-eyed monster,” “a foregone conclusion” and “I will wear my heart upon my sleeve.” For more information and tickets visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au Thanks to the Civic Theatre Newcastle we have a double pass to giveaway to the Opening Night of Othello on Thursday, September 8th, 2016. Although settlers moved inland and westward from the coast shortly after 1797, little or no development of the area took place until the early 1820's following a survey by Mr Harry Dangar, who was the surveyor for the district.
Following the establishment of the Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company’s first coal mine in 1860, the town grew rapidly. The coal mined at Wallsend was of very good quality and the town prospered creating the commercial hub it is today. With little consideration given to the controlled development of the town, the Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company set aside a portion of their grant aside for residential and business purposes which led to the first subdivision in 1860. The Coal Company subdivided land in and around its ‘A’ Pit with the first blocks selling for up to 160 pounds per acre. What followed was considerable building activity in the area and the development of commercial buildings, shops and hotels to service the needs of the growing number of miners arriving from as far away as Scotland, England and Wales. In the 1860s, following a period of long-drawn-out disputes with management, a group of disgruntled miners began the Co-operative Mine on the present site of Wallsend High School in Macquarie Street. The mine ceased production in 1934 and was the first and only attempt to work a coal mine on the cooperative principle. Wallsend, at this time, was a thriving township with a population of 6,000 people which at that point (1868) equalled the population of Newcastle. There were also eight churches, two public schools, several friendly societies, one denominational school, one co-operative society and a bank. ►
Like many Newcastle suburbs, Wallsend is named after a place in England and in this case a small coal mining township in Durham, Northumberland which is located in the north of England and situated at the end of Hadrian’s Wall which stretched across England – hence the name "Walls End".
ALL FOR ONLY
The name was given to the area by Alexander Brown, originally a native of Northumberland when, in the 1850s, he purchased land bordering what is now Newcastle Road, Boundary and Croudace Streets and beyond Gunambi Road. The company he formed to operate the colliery which opened in January 1861 was called the Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company.

As a coal mining centre, Wallsend coal equalled the best there was and its development as a coal mining centre played a critical role in the early development of Newcastle as a port. So important was Wallsend as an industrial hub, that at one point in time its population equalled that of Newcastle.
Expansion and Development
The Australian Agricultural Co. opened their first pit at Hamilton, five miles from Wallsend, in 1849 and following the seam, extended their activities to Wallsend.

The original inhabitants, the Awabakal people, called the area now known as Wallsend "Nikkinba" - the place of the coals, and was no doubt part of their traditional hunting grounds owing to the fish, game and native vegetable being plentiful.
Soon after completion of the survey in 1823, an area in Wallsend was selected for land grant purposes and settlement developed rapidly, both as an agricultural and cattle raising area until coal was first discovered.

Fascinating, united, community-centric, historic – this is Wallsend. The importance of Wallsend is not always apparent to those who live outside the area with its name more often than not associated with the town's ability to produce excellent football teams and players. But, its development and importance to the region was once so much more than this.

The suburb began as two mining towns, Wallsend and Plattsburg. Wallsend was the more developed and as it grew it linked to Plattsburg via Nelson Street. Wallsend was declared to be a separate municipality in early 1874, but this had changed by 1915.

In 1874 Wallsend was incorporated, and the first council formed with James Fletcher elected Mayor. The first Catholic Church at Wallsend was opened in 1876, the stones for it being sourced from the old quarry in Nelson Street. This Church, though not used, stood opposite the present brick church until 1954. The priest came from Newcastle and celebrated Mass every three months and as there was no public transport, the people thought little of walking to Lambton or Newcastle when there was no Mass at Wallsend. The push for a hospital in Wallsend started around 1885 and was finally constructed on land donated by Newcastle Wallsend Coal Co. and opened in 1893. With around 190 beds, Wallsend was one of the best equipped and most efficient hospitals in NSW outside the Sydney region. Until the mid-1960s it was a community hospital supported by local donations and mineworkers' levies, as well as funds from the state government and run by a local community board. The hospital was eventually closed in September 1991. Amalgamation of the two councils occurred in 1915 with the new council being known as Wallsend Municipal Council. This continued until 1938 when Wallsend joined with Newcastle City Council. Steam trams from Newcastle to Plattsburg replaced regular rail
services in 1887. When the line was extended to West Wallsend and Speers Point, it was supposedly the longest suburban steam tram line in the world. Unfortunately, the December 1989 earthquake resulted in the demolition of many century-old buildings. However, Wallsend still retains much of the atmosphere and character of its ‘coal mining village’ years. Today, Wallsend has outgrown the historic main street and received investment and expansion from local business and national companies. The main street of Wallsend has also experienced a constantly changing arrangement of business with new restaurants, real estate agencies, trendy coffee shops, hairdressers, flower stores and many professional services occupying previous local businesses that have since moved to the larger Stockland Wallsend shopping centre. Wallsend is also at the heart of Newcastle’s property market with more properties sold in Wallsend than any other Newcastle suburb in the 2013-14 financial year, according to Australian Property Monitors. Local property experts put this growing demand down to a number of factors that include affordable housing and the town’s close proximity to the city and other Newcastle suburbs. They also add that the suburbs access to good schools, the University and the close community meant it was a great place to raise a family. ■ Acknowledgement: Thanks to Wallsend Heritage Group Inc. for historical information and also the University of Newcastle Archives for providing images.

Fashion + Beauty... Non-Touring
Why Contouring is on its Way Out By Sarah Saffo for #WestfieldKotara So here’s the deal: we are completely over contouring! Enough is enough; we want to take it back to naturallooking skin. Even the queen of contouring, Kim Kardashian, is trying to channel a more laid-back makeup vibe. This is where non-touring comes into play. (Praise!) Non-touring is basically laying off overboard contour on the face and opting for a more illuminated and strobed look. It’s all about shimmery illuminators, the perfect tinted moisturiser or luminous foundation, and eye-brightening concealer. We still recommend adding a light and very soft bronzer to the hollows of your cheeks for a bit of definition – it's all about balance!
THE PRODUCTS WE RECOMMEND FOR DEFINING THE FACE It's all about keeping your makeup soft with highlighting products and using a light mineral powder to keep your t-zone matte. Use bronzer on the hollows of your cheeks and apply a soft peach blush and blend. All you need to finish is a touch of mascara and some light eyebrow shading to complete your non-tour look!
Shoedrobe: The Only 3 Boots You'll Need this Winter By Alyce Cowell for #WestfieldKotara Ah, boots. We love them, but it's hard to keep up with the different styles, heights, trends and prices every winter! Should we stick to the basics, or do we need that thigh-high lace-up stiletto pair? If you're looking to streamline your winter wardrobe (and not spend your entire life savings on a collection of boots), I've picked the top three styles you need this season: a black ankle boot for every day, a lace-up bootie for nights out and an overthe-knee boot, because they're definitely the biggest trend of 2016!
work with everything. On the other hand, if you tend to wear a lot of monochrome and minimal prints, you can have fun with embellishments and hardware to make your look pop! Pictured top left: Windsor Smith Edme Boot. This boot is too good to be true! We are obsessed with the elastic lacing detailing. Featuring a leather upper and small 6cm heel, it's perfect in every single way. Style with trousers, knitwear or pencil skirts.
THE LACE-UP BOOTIE A high-heeled lace-up bootie is the perfect choice for nights out. They're a bit edgier than your standard pump, take every outfit to the next level and are trending big time right now, so there are lots of options to choose from! Go for classic black, or try a tan boot if you wear lighter shades or think you'll wear them a lot during the day too! Pictured top right: Windsor Smith Caressa Booties.
THE OVER-THE-KNEE BOOT
A lot of women avoid the over-the-knee boot, but they're not as scary as you think! Avoid sky-high stiletto heels and go for a You'll most likely wear these every day, so pick a good pair! medium chunky heel or a small block heel instead. A slouchy or Look for a small, chunky heel (not too flat and not too high), an stretchy leg is best and when it comes to fabric, opt for a soft almond-shaped or pointed toe and a slim fit around the ankle. If suede over a patent leather. Follow these tips and you'll feel you wear a lot of fun outfits, go for a simple boot that will much more chic in this typically daunting boot!

Tween Style
What's happening at
Well, what a month July was at Charlestown Square with the opening of the first H&M and Cotton On flagship stores! Were you among the thousands of eager shoppers who flocked to the centre to enjoy international fashion in our backyard, plus snapped up a bargain or two?
The Brands They (and you) Will Love By Claire Edwards for #WestfieldKotara Trying to find age-appropriate clothing for your tween girl? You're not alone! They no longer fit into kids’ sizes, and they’re going to be a little fussy while they're trying to find their own sense of style – so generally pink, all-black or anything too skimpy is out. Let’s face it – you're going to need to bring your negotiation skills into play here, as what they want to wear and what you want them to dress in are going to be different. Where to next? We’ve rounded up the best places to buy tween clothing for your daughter's (8-16 years old) style, whether it's for a party, concert, the weekend, or something that feels a little more tomboy.
PARTY Send her off to that birthday or end of primary school disco with confidence in an outfit that has a modern twist. She'll feel like the belle of the ball with a gorgeous dress with a classic print (such as floral), paired with a trendy faux fur vest. CONCERT The first concert you take her to is a big deal and going to be something she remembers forever. She (and secretly you) can't wait to see P!nk, Taylor Swift or 5SOS live, and she's going to want an outfit to wear with a rock edge. Look for pieces with a touch of sparkle or embellishments.
WEEKEND Relaxing over the weekend at a friend's place or on the couch, she'll want to mix and match bright colours and fun prints. Easy-to-layer leggings, hoodies and tees make cosy pieces for whatever look she's after. Pictured left to right: Pumpkin Patch Pom Pom Beanie, Typo Headphones, Country Road Cable Tights, Country Road Pocket Front Dungaree.
“When we were given the tribal brief for the Wearable Art assessment I wanted to do something that wasn’t cliché or classically tribal. So I designed something that told the story of the warrior character in Princess Mononoke, the spirit of the forest and how they interact,” she said.
Wearable Art a Hit at Wool Awards Hunter TAFE fashion students have dominated the catwalk in the Wearable Art section of the 2016 Australian Wool Fashion Awards.
The opening of unique stores continues at Charlestown Square in August. Beauty lovers will be thrilled to hear Mecca Maxima will open its first location in the Hunter, while Swarovski will bring its world famous crystal cut creations. Both stores will open mid-August on Level 2 near Myer and H&M respectively.
TOMBOY Pink is not an option for the tween who has a tomboy style. Think overalls, classic sneakers and a fun print sweater for hanging out with the squad.
When describing the design process of her Wearable Art winning entry Sally, 22, said her favourite Japanese anime film, Princess Mononoke, was her inspiration.
Sally Paull with her award winning design.
In case you’ve missed the excitement, the centre is now home to fashion favourite, H&M in a huge two level store with the latest looks from global runways in women’s wear, menswear, childrens and homewares. Plus, the large format Cotton On flagship store on Level 1 is stocked with great value ladies, mens, kids, shoes and Cotton On Home.
Over the past 12 months, there has been multiple changes and enhancements during the development works and we thank you all for your co-operation during the project. And now, there’s even more time to enjoy all that Charlestown Square has to offer with shops open until 5pm on Sundays. The South Piazza cafes and restaurants plus Readings Cinemas, Strike Bowl and Timezone trade later every evening for your enjoyment.
Due to complete her Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Technology at Hunter TAFE this November, Sally created the 90-percent Merino Wool garment as part of her coursework assessment during the first semester, finishing the entire project from concept and pattern making to the final product in under a month.
And there’s even more to come… we’re pleased to announce that Valleygirl will return the centre later this year on Level 2 in a large format store between Virgin Mobile and H&M, plus there will be another first to the Hunter international fashion retailer at Charlestown Square next year… stay tuned!
Ashleigh’s wearable art entry was another favourite with the judges, with its inspiration coming from “the armour, fighting techniques, and lifestyle of the Bushido samurai warriors”. Recalling the challenge of using wool to create the entire piece, Ashleigh said it was a “challenge,” with the main braided section of the outfit having to be stitched together while it was draped over a model.
Experience more at The Hunter’s favourite place during August! Cheers,

One way to combat this risk is to encourage greater collaboration between primary health carers and professionals involved in the complementary therapies industry. Kath and Chris have been working towards this goal since they took over the Hanbury Street practice four-and-a-half years ago. Since that time Mayfield Medical Connection has operated as an integrated medical practice with both GPs and complementary therapists under the one roof. In addition to an evidence-based naturopath, the centre also offers the services of a dietician, psychologists and is about to welcome an osteopath into the fold. “It was always our intention to create a platform where people work hand-in-hand. It’s about the balance in health and the balance in looking after yourself; the balance in advice that you get,” Kath said. The dedication to balanced advice is such that the practice is currently researching the possibility of launching into a new era of collaboration, where patients are able to see an evidencebased naturopath and a GP in the room at the same time. Aside from saving the patient time, money and angst by avoiding the back and forth of having to attend separate appointments at different places, on different days, the initiative will also deliver a range of other benefits. “We expect that there’s a massive advantage to having two people who are educated in their own particular field discuss your health holistically in the same room,” Sonia said.

Forget Dr. Google and Keep Your GP Informed! WORDS: MICHELLE MEEHAN
“The GPs here are certainly very open to this conversation, but this doesn’t mean that they will automatically accept everything I recommend. I have to back up every request with evidence. If, and when, we are able to offer collaborative appointments we hope that when there are differences of professional opinion, we are able as a team to assist the patient to decide which is most appropriate to them. It’s actually a case where the sum of the whole is greater than the parts.” Kath said the Mayfield practice, like many others, has expanded over the years to maintain its viability, with the employment of additional doctors to increase turnover rather than cutting services or reducing care. But the Federal Government’s failure to increase the Medicare rebate beyond $37.05 for a standard appointment, combined with years of rebates failing to keep up with the market rate of appointments, has forced the practice to re-evaluate its billing procedures.
Whether patients are reluctant to discuss this use with their GP out of concern it will be discouraged, or merely because they don’t realise they need to, this can be putting them at risk of doing more harm than good according to naturopath Sonia McNaughton, who also works at the Mayfield integrated “None of the major political parties are particularly supportive of General Practice. Complementary therapies are becoming an increasingly common part of the treatment process for a growing number of “I believe Australians have an entitlement attitude towards Australians, but while more people are turning to areas such as “When patients visit their GP they may worry that it’s not ok to healthcare, which has been fostered by the government for naturopathy and herbal remedies to help fix what ails them, few share that they’re on these complementary medicines firstly, years and that the Medicare rebate needs to be seen as a are sharing this information with their General Practitioner (GP). or secondly they just forget to mention it. experience involving the release of stress hormones that mobilise us for action. When the threat has passed, our system calms down, and things can return to normal. So anxiety has a purpose – to keep us safe by problem-solving our way out of situations that might threaten our safety and wellbeing. Our alarm system generally works well in situations that involve a threat to physical safety, as long as we can take some form of action. The What-if’s
DEALING WITH ANXIETY WORDS ANNE WARD At a time when advances in technology have raised the general standard of living, anxiety is on the increase, across all age levels. Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia, affecting, on average, 1 in 4 people. Anxiety is a natural state, so why do so many people struggle with it? There is not a simple answer to this question. However, having a better understanding of anxiety can go a long way in helping to manage it, so that it does not become overwhelming and debilitating. Our Alarm System Anxiety is an inbuilt mechanism that is designed to alert us to potential threats in our environment. When we encounter situations we perceive to be threatening, a structure in the brain called the amygdala, sets off an alarm, called the fightflight response. The fear response is a powerful whole-body
However, in our society, we have become accustomed to being able to plan our lives and the sense of threat often comes from the uncertainty of not knowing what is going to happen. These situations involve the what-ifs of life. Trying to solve what-ifs can lead to a pattern of negative thinking called rumination, whereby we keep thinking about the problem, without actually coming up with a solution. What-if questions lead to more what-ifs, and this can result in feeling overwhelmed and helpless. In other words, our imagination begins working against us, not for us. Rather than solving the problem, our imagination enlarges the problem in our mind. The cycle of negative thinking often causes sleep interruption and can lead to other problems such as depression as we become further absorbed in a state of uncertainty. People with chronic anxiety tend to overestimate the risks and underestimate their own resources and ability to cope. This results in a passive form of coping called “avoidance” which temporarily reduces anxiety, but also lowers self-confidence so that the anxiety returns. Avoidance can take the form of procrastination or emotional avoidance such as emotional eating or self-medicating with alcohol or drugs. It’s not possible to predict or have control over everything around us. So, it’s not whether we deal with uncertainty, but HOW we deal with it that is important. In other words, the question is not whether we will experience anxiety, but HOW we manage it.
Managing Anxiety Active coping strategies can help us to deal with uncertainty and anxiety by helping us to think about problems from different perspectives and by taking action to solve problems. This might involve: • Identifying whether you are over-estimating the risks in the situation. • Putting your anxiety into words, turning it from a feeling into a concrete problem to be solved. • Breaking down the problem into its components. • If you don’t know how to address the problem, get input from others. • Rather than trying to eliminate anxiety, ask yourself: what can I do to reduce the problem to unpleasant but manageable? • Interrupt rumination by asking the question: what does this mean I should actually do? • Persevere, if something doesn’t work, find out what you need to do differently. Sometimes the wisest course of action is to seek help from a professional. Children have active imaginations, and it is common for them to experience anxiety. Parents can help by teaching children: • How to tell the difference between a real threat versus an imagined one. • How to put fears into words to turn anxiety into a problem to be solved. • How to solve problems rather than avoid them. • How to ask for help if you don’t have the answer to a problem. • How to “self-soothe” and calm down when feeling upset and scared. gut. For optimal gut health, a diet that is low in inflammatory foods such as wheat, dairy, sugar and processed foods, while high in healing foods such as bone broths, sauerkrauts, kefirs, and kombuchas is recommended. Identifying any food intolerances or allergies will also allow you to create a diet that is best suited to you and your gut health. The health of your gut also depends on other factors; chronic unmanaged stress decreases your gut health by undermining your immune system; lack of balance in your gut microflora (good vs. bad bacteria) caused by processed foods or antibiotic use; or a decrease in functioning of your digestive system due to medications, chemicals and parasites.
What is spirulina & why should you have it? Spirulina is a powerful, microscopic vegetable algae. It is highly digestible and one of the most nutritious, concentrated whole foods known to humankind. It is one of nature's richest sources of complete protein and consists of a wide variety of vitamins and minerals for general health and wellbeing. It contains 300% more calcium than whole milk; it is 28 times richer in iron than beef liver and contains 25 times more beta-carotene than carrots! But there's so many on the market. Which is the best? Hawaiian Pacifica spirulina is the Big Kahuna in the Superfood world. Hawaii has the ideal climate and growing location for continuous year round cultivation of spirulina. It is the only spirulina in the world that uses deep seawater containing many trace minerals during the growing process. Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina draws nourishment from the world's cleanest, deepest ocean, without the use or any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified material. Hawaiian Pacifica spirulina is an organically grown, veganfriendly, paleo, gluten free, and environmentally friendly sourced spirulina. Say Aloha to this Big Kahuna and add it to your day!
Healing your gut is essential for both mental and physical health. To do it right, it does take some time. Considering the entire digestive system is up to 9 metres long it’s not surprising that it takes time to get all those metres working well again! Interestingly, the cells in our gut are replaced every 1-3 days so you should feel some benefits immediately even if you make small changes to your diet and lifestyle.
The Importance of a Healthy Gut
So how do you treat and improve your gut health? Healing your gut is a four step process: 1) Remove those foods and toxins that are impacting your gut health 2) Replace with healing foods to ensure good gut health and optimum nutritional intake

It is easy to take advantage of or even ignore the health of your gut and digestive system. That is until something goes wrong! Reflux, bloating, cramping, diarrhoea and/or constipation cause not only discomfort but can also affect a person’s quality of life. Avoiding certain foods, poor sleep and not attending social situations due to tummy upsets are a typical result of digestive issues. The health of your gut though is more than just a comfortable belly, eating all sorts of different foods, sleeping well and being with friends and family – although these are important! Gut health is also linked to, if not directly influencing mental health such as anxiety and depression; skin problems including eczema and psoriasis; immune strength and function; and mental cognition and acuity. So what causes an unhealthy gut? Although there are a few causes, diet is one of the key factors in the health of your
The health of your gut is not merely about your digestive system. Gut health impacts the health and functioning of your whole body. So if you are suffering, get help as soon as possible. Strength Training...
A woman's best friend! WORDS CHRISTAL STRIDE Personal Trainer at Planet Fitness Belmont I will admit that I was a late convert to the world of strength training. I was often intimidated by the weights area and thought that group fitness classes and cardio were the answer to keeping me fit and in shape and that lifting weights was just for the men. I had dabbled a little with some Functional Training Classes, Circuit Training and Body Pump classes. However, any muscle I gained was quickly burnt off by all the daily running and aerobic exercise I was doing at the same time. Like so many women, I didn’t realise the positive impact of strength training and the many benefits it could bring to my life as well as my body. When you introduce it into your exercise routine, you will see and feel the difference quickly by losing weight, gaining muscle and toning, improving your posture and sculpting your body the way you have always wanted. Incorporating strength training into your exercise regime brings many benefits: • Lose Body Fat: The more lean muscle your body has, the more calories it burns. • Be Physically Stronger: Weight Training increases strength and therefore everyday activities will become easier. • Prevent Injury: The stronger we are, the less chance of injury because lifting weights strengthens your muscles and tendons. This is especially important as we get older because strengthening muscles around our joints is one of the best ways to prevent and recover from injury. • Reduce Health Risks: Strength training helps the body process sugar and therefore lessens the risk of developing Diabetes and other conditions. It also increases bone density, which helps prevent osteoporosis. • Look more toned: Strength training will improve your physical appearance by adding lean muscle more efficiently than any other form of exercise. Without any shadow of a doubt, I can guarantee that your body and your entire well-being for
that matter will change exponentially when you begin to incorporate regular strength sessions in with your much-loved daily cardio. While you might be hesitant at first and be thinking that you will turn into the she-hulk, you will also discover that it is virtually impossible for a woman to do so as we don’t produce enough testosterone to warrant those kinds of results. So unless you’re eating enough to rival a family of seven or are knocking back hormone altering supplements, you don’t have to worry about gaining anything but great results. Now… before you get all frazzled and think you have to hit the squat racks – just like cardio, strength training comes in many different forms. Body weight training (Push-ups, Dips, Planks) Resistance work (TRX bands, Cable Machines) Machine work (Leg Press, Shoulder Press, Lat pull-down) Free weights (Kettlebell, Dumb Bell, Medicine ball) An example of a weight training program to increase all-over muscle tone and growth is: Monday Legs (Quads, Hamstrings, Calves) Tuesday Shoulders/Abs Wednesday Chest/Biceps/Triceps Thursday Rest Friday Legs (Glute Focus) Saturday Back/Abs Sunday Rest For each training day above, I recommend 4-5 exercises using 4 sets (one warm up and three working sets). I also suggest incorporating one rest day during the week to allow proper recovery. It can also be useful to train lower body twice a week and separate out muscle groups for optimal development. Being fit and healthy in my opinion is one of the best things you can ever achieve.

As women we need to remember that being fit and healthy is all about having a functional body that is strong enough to keep us in a good mental state, strong enough to fight off diseases and strong enough to do all the things us women do as daughters, wives, mothers, employees, role models, bosses and so on. Strength training should be an essential component of our exercise regimes and we should not be embarrassed or intimidated to walk into the weights room. At the end of the day, we train to be the best versions of ourselves, and this is even easier with Planet Fitness’ judgement free philosophy.

WEEKENDS AWAY Barrington Tops A little under two hours from Newcastle, Barrington Tops National Park is an unspoilt wilderness covering more than 83,000 hectares. Bushwalking trails in this beautiful natural expanse take you from subtropical rainforest to ancient beech forests and subalpine woodlands. If you're lucky, you might spot a lyrebird or a satin bowerbird – or maybe one of those elusive Tassie Devils – relocated here as part of the Devil Ark project. Devil Ark is the largest conservation breeding program for the Tasmanian devil on mainland Australia and may just be key to the Devils survival. Located at an altitude of
1,350 metres in the Barrington Tops, Devil Ark provides the perfect breeding environment for Devils. The Tasmanian-like vegetation and cool, wet and snowy conditions mean the Devils feel right at home! There are plenty of other things to see and do in this area including whitewater kayaking, horseriding and mountain biking, and you’ll certainly need the whole weekend to do it all (or nothing!) Throughout the colder months occasional dustings of snow turn this area into a winter wonderland. In the midst of the wilderness, you'll be lucky enough to find comfortable accommodation options, including camping sites in spectacular locations, rustic cottages, B&Bs and mountain retreats. When hunger strikes, the area also offers good restaurants and cafes. For more information visit www.barringtontopstourism.com.au

SEEDS: Developing a Flourishing Community for Newcastle The Personal Development industry isn’t new by any means. In an age where we are all looking to improve ourselves, whether it be through diet and exercise, developing existing talents or expanding our horizons by taking a course or going back to study, buying self-help books or even visiting a ‘life-coach.’ It’s a burgeoning industry that straddles the fence between community service and education.
A new player in the local industry is SEEDS Newcastle, a non-profit organisation that has been created to facilitate community, personal, and spiritual growth within the city of Newcastle through community service, education, empowerment, development, and spirituality (SEEDS). Recognising the power of a flourishing community, the SEEDS team works hard to develop and support relevant initiatives aimed at social wellness, including their Plant Based Nutrition & Cooking Course. These courses have proven very popular and are booked out each and every month and judging by the amazing recipes that are demonstrated (and tasted) we can see why! Here’s one of our favourites!

His hometown of Newcastle continues to stay close to the acclaimed chef’s heart. Not only does his family live here, but generations of local chefs and talent are looking to him for inspiration as the local lad who made it happen and has successfully taken on the international culinary world. Graham does his bit to inspire and train the next generation of Hunter chefs through Newcastle TAFE's annual Brett Graham Scholarship. studying at Hunter TAFE. He later moved to Sydney for a threeyear stint under Liam Tomlin at Banc Restaurant where he won the highly prestigious Josephine Pignolet Award, which included a trip to the UK where he secured a job at The Square, working for Chef Philip Howard. Further awards followed, including Britain’s “Young Chef of the Year” in 2002.
Newcastle Raised Chef Voted Amongst the World’s Best
With the desire to go out on his own and at just 25 years old, Graham opened The Ledbury in the trendy suburb of Notting Hill, West London. Renowned for its world-famous events, restaurants, galleries and theatres the area was made famous by the 1999 romantic comedy "Notting Hill" starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
Eleven years ago Newcastle-raised Brett Graham opened his London restaurant The Ledbury. With a reputation for serving up refined, inventive and unpretentious British food, the restaurant has gone on to earn two coveted Michelin stars and ranks fourteenth amongst the best restaurants in the world – up six places from the 2015 ranking where it was placed twentieth.
After its first year of operation, the restaurant was named Tatler Restaurant of the Year and the Restaurateurs' Restaurant of the Year.
Growing up in Williamtown, Graham commenced his culinary career as a teenager at Scratchleys on the Wharf while

A partnership between Hunter TAFE and Hunter Culinary Association, the scholarship is open to third-year apprentices either currently enrolled at Hunter TAFE or who have completed an apprenticeship within the past 12 months. Past recipients of the award include Troy Rhoades-Brown, of Pokolbin's two-hatted Muse Restaurant and also Muse Kitchen, and Chris Thornton, of Newcastle’s one-hatted Restaurant Mason. Scholarship winners are also given the opportunity to work in London with Graham and his team at The Ledbury. It is Graham’s hope that the award raises the standard and inspires young chefs to go even further, to try new things and bring those skills back to Newcastle's culinary scene. When not in the kitchen, Graham enjoys hunting and gardening and goes for regular walks around Richmond Park in southwest London, which is known for its wild deer. In 2017 Graham is reportedly planning on opening a deer park (with a collection of rare white, red deer that will form part of the herd).

than 25 years, having previously played the Newcastle Civic Theatre in 1979 and then again in 1981. The legendary self-taught guitarist’s love affair with Australia is no secret; Rodriguez first toured our shores in the late 1970s, long before the rest of the world caught onto his talent thanks to Malik Bendjelloul’s Oscarwinning film Searching for Sugar Man. Lauded as the downtown Bob Dylan, Rodriguez’s blend of social politics, emotional insights and street observations, showcased in songs like Sugar Man, I Wonder and Cause, vividly captures a particular time and place, all complemented by his impeccable voice. FROM SMALL IDEAS TO BIG BUSINESS Find out what it takes to break into the big world of business from a small idea. Supported by BusinessBasics, the Hunter Business Chamber, hosts a monthly Business Development Forum to provide education, professional development and up to date information on issues important to business in our community. Highlighting small business month, the Chamber will proudly host Jennifer Holland as their guest speaker on 14 September. Jennifer is the Founder and CEO of Throat Scope, the world’s first all-in-one light and tongue depressor medical device. Throat Scope was a light bulb moment that came to Jennifer in a doctor’s surgery in Brisbane back in 2009. The doctor pried her child’s mouth open with a wooden tongue depressor while Jennifer restrained her distressed child. At that moment, Jennifer thought there had to be an easier way, and
In 2011, Jennifer won $50,000 from the Queensland Government for ‘What’s The Big Idea QLD’ for the continued development of the Throat Scope technology. This allowed Jennifer to take Throat Scope to the next level and present her invention on the Channel 10 hit show Shark Tank in 2015. Jennifer walked away from the show with backing from tech entrepreneur and investor Steve Baxter. This investment allowed Jennifer to welcome a new team of medical and corporate professionals to the Throat Scope family and she hasn’t looked back. Following the success of Shark Tank, Throat Scope won the 2015 Sydney Design Awards and Jennifer officially launched her product into the Australian and New Zealand healthcare and consumer market. Since then, Jennifer has secured healthcare and retailer distributors worldwide to introduce Throat Scope to medical professionals, hospitals and homes around the globe. To hear Jennifer’s insights and business story, make sure you book your ticket for the Business Development Forum on the 14th of September. Early bird tickets for members are out now until 26 August or until sold out. Visit www.hunterbusinesschamber.com.au to register. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 43
I did my best to explain the electoral process to the Kid. We would be there a while, she was told, as mummy chooses to vote below the line on the senate paper - some people deserve to be last. This year's form was as long as Ben Hur's extras list. While standing beside me, I'm sure looking slightly bored, a nice man walked past the Kid and said, "Takes a long time, doesn't it?" I glanced up from my cardboard booth to see the Kid reply, "It's about who looks after my school and the hospital where Ma-Ma works. It's important you know." I smiled to myself and continued to number every box, all 151 of them.
FAMILY + COMMUNITY //
The Breakfast Team on morning radio are traditionally there to entertain while you go about your morning routine and commute, but that day was different. The crews stayed on air hours longer than usual. Some had members of their immediate family just blocks from the world trade centre, and we knew one young staff member was in Washington, where a third plane crashed. The announcers' first role was as news providers but, just as importantly, they were a community counseling service. On-air teams and their support crew were outstanding that day and in the days to follow.
Equally awe-inspiring is seeing a well-researched, powerful story shine light into the darkest of places and become a catalyst for action and change. Newcastle Herald journalist Joanne McCarthy wrote a series of investigative stories about abuse inside the Catholic Church. Her fearlessness and hard work, with the unwavering backing of editor Chad Watson, led We are incredibly lucky in Newcastle to still have local news to an historic and long overdue Royal Commission. Hunter Academy of Sport
After years of preparation and months of waiting, the entire Australian Olympic team was named in mid-July just three short weeks before the 2016 games kick off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Harradine finished 31st in Beijing when he was troubled by illness in the lead-up, and ninth in London when he missed out on the eight-man final by 13 centimetres.
The Australian team is made up of 410 athletes with 19 who grew up and played junior sport right here in the Hunter. Of those 19, ten athletes were members of the Hunter Academy of Sport’s elite training squads – enhancing their skills and learning how to walk and talk like a professional athlete before making their Australian debut.
The Eleebana native attended Warners Bay High School and earned a Bachelor of Physical Education from Newcastle University in 2006. Harradine made his first major international competition debut at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne where the discus thrower finished eighth. In 2010, Harradine took home gold at the same Games breaking the Australian and Oceanian men's discus throwing record with a throw of 66.45m.
Matthew Dawson (Hockey)
The son of Australian cricketer Trish Dawson, Matt’s hockey His personal-best throw is 68.20 metres in 2013, which journey began at eight-years-old, following in his sister's would have been enough for a silver medal had he thrown it in footsteps on the Central Coast. Dawson played his senior hockey with is primed for a PB when he takes the field on August 12 and Newcastle club Norths in the Hunter Coast Premier League. 13. He was the grand final man of the match for the Norths as recently as 2014. Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (Sailing) Selection to the 2016 Rio Olympics came quickly for Dawson, who made his debut with the Kookaburra’s in November 2014 six months after the grand final in Newcastle. While a member of the Kookaburras, Dawson played on the winning teams for the 2016 Champions Trophy in London, England, 2015 World League Final in Raipur, India, and 2015 Oceania Cup in Stratford, New Zealand. Dawson is one of six newcomers to the Men’s Olympic Hockey team of sixteen, who will look to take home the gold after back-to-back bronze medals in the previous two Olympic appearances. Benn Harradine (Discus) The towering 198cm discus thrower will make his third Olympic appearance in Rio this month after qualifying in April for throwing a distance of 66.75m in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Four-time world titleholder, Outteridge, and three-time world champion, Jensen, are coming off a second placing at the world championships in Argentina last year and will look to defend their 2012 gold medal finish at the London Olympics. Novocastrian Outteridge took up sailing at age five and won his first World Championships title in the 49er class in 2008. He repeated this success in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Jensen, a Sydney local, put in the hard yards traveling to the Hunter to train with Outteridge at the Hunter Academy of Sport on Lake Macquarie before they both began their professional sailing careers. Since their last Olympic performance the New Zealand team has taken gold in every regatta, they have entered – including four world championships, meaning Outteridge and Jensen need to be on top of their game to claim their title.

Like the look of Emerald Green? WORDS: DEBORAH BARTLETT + CHRIS WILLIAMS insideout Newcastle A flick through all the latest interior design magazines sees a dramatic increase in the use of rich emerald greens in interiors. This on-trend, gorgeous jewel tone has always been a showstopper, but for the novice, it can be difficult to know just how to incorporate it into your décor without it overwhelming your space. The charm of emerald green is that it goes with most colours. Mixing different shades of green into our interiors creates the same feel as adding plants, it's like bringing a little bit of nature indoors. Blush pinks through to navy and blues also earthy tones of mustards and browns go together to create a look for different styles of interiors. Try Emerald Green feature walls, luscious green foliage motifs on wallpaper or a beautiful fabric. Be brave, the colour green will definitely enhance the feel of calm and peace to your room! If you’re not brave enough to
paint a dark green wall, try a beautiful occasional chair or sofa in a rich emerald green velvet, or luxurious velvet cushions filled with feathers. Add in some botanical art pieces to bring in a sense of freshness and calm. Forget the saying “blue and green should never be seen unless there is a colour in between.” Blues used in a few different shades will add depth to the room, maintaining the peaceful feel. A FEW TIPS TO USE GREEN AT HOME Create a moody room - A moody room doesn’t always signal dark coloured walls. Lighting, texture, comfort and colours all add to the feel. Navy and emerald green will create a feeling of comfort and calmness. An eclectic interior will feel cosier than a minimalistic one – so copper and brass accessories are an excellent choice to add to the finished look.
that fresh and welcoming feel. Use jute rugs to continue the natural feel and give the addition of texture. A sophisticated look - Use layered greys and charcoals throughout a room splashed with emerald green pieces, such as cushions, upholstered chairs. Accessorise with luxury velvet cushions. Add some blush pink with artwork and pink blush cushions this will add to an elegant look. An alternative to the blush pink can be geometric black and whites such as rugs to give a more dramatic look. Don’t forget the beautiful copper and brass accessories. Emerald green has always been a favourite colour of mine, so I hope you have been encouraged to be brave and try out some of the wallpapers and beautiful fabrics in your home.
Neutral interiors - Don’t miss out on your little bit of green. Keep your neutral theme and add in a large occasional chair, sofa or ottoman upholstered in plush emerald green velvet. By adding too many green pieces, this will take away the wow and confuse your look. Create a botanical look - We have some great wallpaper in store with palm leaves or ivy that work to bring in the colour green. Add botanical prints and use earthy tones to accessorise. Mustards and earthy toned cushions look great with this colour. Picture frames and furnishings in timber and rattan will finish
