Top Book FIVE BOXES - Mark McLean On a visit home to his parent’s house in England’s Lake district, Newcastle writer and high school teacher Mark MacLean’s father asked him to do something with a bunch of his old boxes, which contained remnants of youthful possessions from 30 years ago. Five Boxes is the comical and witty journey of unpacking those boxes of stuff: lame trophies, medieval dentistry, Dave Bean boring diaries, the village haircut, mopeds, punk music and siblings. But, mostly, it is about self-discovery. With chapter openings illustrated by local artist Trevor Dickinson, Five Boxes is a delightful record of life - then and now. "Insightful, charming and genuinely funny – Mark MacLean is a natural storyteller and Five Boxes unpacks an adolescence that Readers of a Certain Age will find engrossing from start to finish." – Nick Earls, writer. COVERFEATURE STORY MARCUS ROSS NOBLE WESTBURY Marcus Westbury

Persistant, Curious & Lucky... This is Marcus Westbury WORDS: Michelle Meehan IMAGES: Andrew Sully

For someone who doesn’t consider himself a creative person, Marcus Westbury’s career has certainly been focussed on creating interesting things. The Newcastle-raised broadcaster, writer and festival director has been responsible for some of Australia’s more unconventional and successful cultural projects and events. He was the founder of the renowned This is Not Art Festival, which returns to Newcastle this month, is a former artistic director of Melbourne’s Next Wave Festival and was a director of the cultural program for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. But more recently it has been his innovative work in urban renewal as the founder of Renew Newcastle (and later Renew Australia) that is taking the spotlight. This initiative has brokered access to more than 80 empty buildings for in excess of 200 creative enterprises, artists and cultural projects and in doing so transformed not only the city’s CBD, but the way in which Newcastle is seen by its residents as well as those from further abroad. Following the launch of Marcus’ book Creating Cities last month, the newly published author took time out to chat with Intouch Magazine about crowd funding, creativity and change. 6 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

it’s a book that you can pick up and read and hopefully walk away seeing the problems of your own city or community in a different light and how you might do something about them. Creating Cities was brought to life with the assistance of your fans via crowd funding. You certainly had an amazing response to your funding campaign. Did you expect that level of response? It was much more than I expected. I was originally trying to raise $10,000 and in the end I more than quadrupled that. I guess I thought that it was plausible to do a book, I thought there was a community out there that would support it. I wasn’t surprised that we hit the target. I don’t think I would have done it if I didn’t think we could do that, but we hit the target within 24 hours and it’s still got the record I think for the most number of supporters for a book ever in Australia and the most money raised for a book ever in Australia. The book’s narrative is woven around your journey with Renew Newcastle – but it goes far beyond simply recounting the stories of the successes and failures you encountered along the way. Can you tell me what you hope to achieve with Creating Cities? I think the idea was to try and get to a deeper set of observations about cities and about ideas, but to do so through anecdote and observation. So rather than try and write a kind of abstract ‘the planning rules were blah and I did this,’ it was to try to go ‘here’s an example of a problem I discovered and how we went about trying to solve it’ and tell some interesting stories along the way to keep the narrative going. To me it’s a chance to reflect also on a very unlikely chain of events – and it is an unlikely chain of events - at so many points this could have not have happened really easily. So telling some of those stories as well, the end result is, I hope, a book that you can either pick up and read and think ‘that’s a really good story and I enjoyed the story’ and hopefully it

was a bit inspiring or engaging or whatever; or it’s a book that you can pick up and read and hopefully walk away seeing the problems of your own city or community in a different light and how you might do something about them. Do you see it as an important extension or addition to the work that is being done in Newcastle and now across the country with Renew Australia? I do, I think one of the reasons I decided to do a book is that I spent a lot of time talking about Renew… half my life these days is talking about and explaining it to other communities that are interested in doing it. There’s a lot of interest in what we did and how we did it – there’s not necessarily a lot of time or a lot of context to explain why. I’ve described it in the crowd funding campaign as a ‘why-to book’. What it’s trying to do is explain why we set up the processes we set up and why they worked the way they worked and why I think they succeeded at what they were trying to do. It would be impossible to summarise all that the Renew program has achieved in Newcastle, but if you had to select one thing that has come out of it you’re most proud of, what would it be? There are 80 less empty buildings since we reopened them – that number just blows my mind. I think if you told me in 2008 there would be eight I would have thought that was just awesome. There are 200 projects that have started – there’s all of those quantifiable numbers and there’s the real businesses that have signed leases, they’ve bought buildings some of them and that’s amazing.

COVER STORY MARCUS WESTBURY Transformations certainly seem to be a key motif in your life – friends there. I’m there on average every two months for a few both negative and positive. Do you think your role in creating days, I’m going to be there four times in the next six weeks, so I don’t really feel I’m that much removed from it. festivals and initiating change within the community was about taking control of those transformations? Intrinsically you’ll always be linked with the projects you’ve created, almost the legacy you and your team of I think it’s an interesting question actually, no-one’s ever collaborators have created for this city, not only with Renew asked me that before. I really like change; I have a really short but with things like the This is Not Art Festival. How does this attention span, I jump from one thing to another, I do lots of make you feel? projects and things –I’m not someone who’s afraid of change. But the question is not about whether you have change or not … It’s really interesting, I can go back to Newcastle, pick up the paper on a random day and half a dozen of the things that the question is who gets to decide what changes and how. people will be talking about would be things that I was involved in starting and I find that pretty cool.

Marcus with Jana from Beep Bicycle Bells -- Another former Renew Newcastle project featured in Bespoke.

The thing that I still get the most out of is watching people do the things they’re passionate about. There’s a big picture story, there’s a narrative change about how people see Newcastle, how they talk about it, what they think it is, I think that has changed a lot and I’m really proud of that. But actually the thing that gives me the most satisfaction is when you have a conversation with someone, like the person who came up to me the other day and said ‘I have always wanted to start my own business or my own project and you gave me the opportunity to do it by setting this up’. You just realise how much there is to be gained from helping those people and how personally satisfying it is to see them achieve what they’re trying to do. Your success with Renew Newcastle and before that, with a host of innovative events and festivals is well documented. Your own personal story is probably not as well known. An essay you wrote for the Griffith Review (republished by the Newcastle Herald last year) laid the highs and lows of it bare. From the effects of health issues experienced by yourself and your mother to your father’s mental health battles; from your family’s financial and emotional ups and downs to your first forays into founding festivals; and then in your mid 20s the effect of your parents’ deaths, one year apart. How much did the experiences of your childhood and youth inform who you are today and the career that you have forged? Hugely so. I don’t know what I’d be doing if I hadn’t had the formative experiences that I’d had and they include the highs and the lows. I’m very much the product of a very specific set of circumstances at a very specific time. I think if I had been born someone else in another place, in another time I’d probably end up on a very different path. I think one of the reasons I can’t really let go of Newcastle is that I’m really very personally aware of how the fate of a city is intertwined with the fates of lots of people in it because I saw that in my own family. And I think on a deeper level there’s a certain sense of anger and injustice about how the world works. Anger’s a funny term to use as motivation but I do get quite angry with the injustices in the world and I think trying to find ways of ameliorating that in whatever way I can is something that actually drives me more than I probably want to acknowledge sometimes.

"I think the idea of change as something that you can control or shape or influence through your actions - not something you just protest against or that you demand someone else do - but the idea of change as something that you own and culture as something that you own through your actions to me has always been really important."

It’s kind of nice that there’s a whole bunch of things in Newcastle that in different ways are really wound into the fabric of the city and I can tell you where they started because I was there. Now the book is out and the show has gone to air, what comes next for you?

You have a background as a writer, broadcaster and festival director – what is your earliest memory of being creative or wanting to create something?

I don’t know is the short answer. We’re trying to get some proper government funding for Renew Australia because I think we’ve had 140 communities around Australia that have contacted us and I can’t afford to go to them. It would be nice to be able to do more with that.

I tend to not describe myself as an artist or a creative person, I joke that I just hang around them and leech off their talents! I wrote lots of bad poetry as a teenager, I’ve made TV series now and I guess I probably always wanted to do that, make media in general.

But I’m basically unemployed once all this finishes, so I need to work out what I’m actually going to be when I grow up again but that’s alright, I usually end up there!

Creating Cities was number one in its category on Amazon in America yesterday… I think I’d like to be part of an international But primarily I don’t think of myself as an artist, I think of myself dialogue and process with communities that are doing similar as someone who has a particular series of skill sets. sorts of things. It’s actually quite boring in some way, it’s about breaking down systems so they work differently. I’m just interested in that Personally I don’t want to do Renew “insert place name here” really basic stuff of what happens to people that make things over and over again but I want to take those ideas about how and how they do it. cities function at the small scale and find other newer, more interesting and hopefully better paid contexts in which I can Is that why you created your latest project – the Bespoke TV series that recently aired on the ABC – to explore the stories apply them and hopefully the book will set in train things that will make that more possible. of these artisans? I think so. I had made a couple of TV series before for the ABC before Renew took over my life and I had wanted to make another one. I went in and saw the ABC Arts team about two years ago now and said here’s three ideas I’ve got for a show and that was the one they really liked. And there was a producer who was working on a similar concept that didn’t have a writer or presenter and I was a writer and presenter who didn’t have a producer or a director so they teamed us up and we went off and made a show. I actually quite enjoy TV as a medium, I think a lot of people kind of dismiss it, but the sort of TV I make I think is a good way of taking what are actually quite complicated concepts of what’s going on in the world and breaking them down into chunks that are a) good stories and b) actually are quite illuminating as well as being entertaining. You’ve lived in Brunswick for 13 years now – do you miss Newcastle? I think I’ve got the perfect relationship with Newcastle. I’m there a lot, I’m involved in a lot of things but I don’t have to get involved in a lot of things. I’ve got an excuse to spend a huge amount of time in Newcastle, which is great. My young kids have been to Newcastle more times than I can count. My eldest son is five and his favourite place to go in the world is Newcastle, he loves it so much and he’s got a whole bunch of

I’ve got a long holiday booked in for the end of the year to South America with my family, which is good, and then once that’s out of the way I’ll probably come back early next year and - I was going to say make a plan, but I never make a plan - I’ll come back and find something and just be where I end up. Finally, if you could sum yourself up in three words, what would they be? Persistent, curious and lucky.

You can buy Marcus Westbury's book Creating Cities online via www.creatingcities.net in both print ($27.50) and ebook ($12.50) versions. The book is also available from local bookstores MacLean's Booksellers Hamilton and Alie Jane Travel Accessories & Designs (Hunter Street Mall). "Creating Cities is a call for action... Marcus makes the time for urban renewal now, driven by an obsession more than mere passion. This book is hopeful and optimistic, and a perfect case study of how systemic and emergent thinking (that is foresight), can create shifts beyond what seems possible." - Kristin Alford, Futurist & Founding Director Bridge 8 (via Goodreads)

WHAT’S ON OCTOBER

SNAPCHAT WITH RICK PRICE Australian singer/songwriter Rick Price has walked the journey many musicians dreams are made of. From the very beginning, as a nine year old and the youngest member of his family’s band, music was Price’s Passion. A multi-instrumentalist, Price continues to write and produce for numerous fellow artists. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee, where he completed his most recent album 'Tennessee Sky' released in July 2015. This Gospel, Soul and Roots recording demonstrates yet another side of Rick’s musical abilities and presents as his finest work to date. We caught up with Rick on the eve of his Australian tour – which includes Lizotte’s Newcastle on November 6th. You were born in a small town in country Queensland… what memories do you have of growing up in the country? I remember the family traveling on country roads to perform at Barn Dances. Memories include playing rugby league and hanging out with my school buddies. What challenges/hurdles does the “small country town” environment present to a budding musician? As I grew older there were of course limited performance opportunities. Eventually I had to move to a major city to expand my career. Did you come from a musical household or were you the stand-out? Yes we were a musical family and performed together at Barn Dances and later advanced to hotels and clubs. Music played a major role in our early years. You are a self-taught musician and play a number of instruments – what’s your instrument of choice and why? I would say the guitar. It was my first instrument and I use it as a percussion instrument as well.

Relive your glory days at UON’s first Bar on the Hill Alumni Reunion Regurgitator headlines line-up of local talent and Aussie exports 8 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Did you always aspire to the music industry and who was your greatest supporter in the early days? Yes music was always my passion from as far back as I can remember. My family, particularly my Mother was my greatest supporter.

DON'T MISS...

How did your first big break come about? In 1988 I sang a national advertising campaign for the bicentennial celebration of a Nation. That opened some important doors for me. Recording or Performing Live Shows - both have unique challenges – what do you love/ hate about each? I love both. The recording part of my job is a very creative process and I love being in my studio but nothing compares with performing in front of a live audience. You seem to have a penchant for Music Festivals – what is it that you like so much about being part of a Festival? If you could choose only one more Festival to perform at – which one would it be and why? I don't know that I could choose one festival over another. They've all been unique and wonderful!! Fast forward to 2015 and you now reside in Nashville, Tennessee. Why the move? How does your US lifestyle differ from the Australian way of life that you grew up with? I moved to Tennessee purely as a personal excursion. I needed to get re-inspired. After completing a tour with my good buddy Tommy Emmanuel it just felt right to stay on in Nashville. Your latest album “Tennessee Sky” has been described as your finest work to date. Is it true that you played all of the instruments on most tracks of the album? Tell us a bit about the album and how it came to be. Yes I set up a studio space in my house and recorded the guitar and vocal and piano and vocal at the same time to give the record a live feel. Then I added the other instruments. I also had some really wonderful special guests on the album. I had alot of fun making Tennessee Sky. Finally – what can audiences expect from your Australian Tour which includes Lizotte’s Newcastle on November 6th? I'll be playing all my well known songs of course and some selections from Tennessee Sky and a handful of songs from artists that have inspired me over the years. Thank you for sharing your time and yourself with our readers!

THINK PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there’s a host of fundraising activities you can get involved in. Not only is October a great time to raise desperately needed funds, it provides an opportunity for us all to focus on breast cancer and its impact on those affected by the disease in our community. Breast Cancer Awareness Month originated in the United States in the 1980s and is now an internationally recognised month for breast cancer awareness. The official “Pink Ribbon Day” is Monday October 26th, but right throughout October Australia's major breast cancer organisations hold events to raise both funds and awareness. Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) works to ensure women with breast cancer receive the very best support, information, treatment and care appropriate to their individual needs. BCNA’s mission is to support, inform, represent and connect Australians affected by breast cancer. If you’ve been diagnosed with Breast Cancer then October is the perfect time to join BCNA’s six-week health and wellbeing program – Revitalise. The program commences on Monday the 19th of October, finishes on Sunday the 29th of November and is run with the support of Fernwood Fitness Centres. For more information about the program visit revitalise.bcna.org.au Many of BCNA’s corporate supporters provide their customers with a way to show their support during October. Berlei’s fabulous Pink Lady range includes every-day and sports bras and $5 from every bra sold will be donated to support BCNA’s My Care Kit program. Berlei has been a proud partner of BCNA since 2005, offering support to women affected by Breast Cancer. During this time they have donated over 100,000 My Care kits to Australian women who’ve just undergone breast cancer surgery. Christine Nolan, CEO of BCNA, says "Berlei's support means the vast majority of Australian women who undergo breast cancer surgery will receive a My Care Kit. Having a specially created comfortable bra to wear after surgery is really appreciated by women at a very stressful time. We are incredibly grateful for the support provided by Berlei through the My Care Kit, and their fundraising for BCNA."

Throughout October, Sussan stores will feature a beautiful range of products from which a portion of the proceeds is donated to BCNA and VS Sassoon will launch the new Power of Pink Collection. KitchenAid makes a donation to BCNA with the sale of every Pink, Raspberry Ice or Cranberry stand mixer, blender, hand mixer or utensil sold. For more information about corporates and products supporting the BCNA visit www.bcna. org.au/news National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the leading community-funded organisation in Australia raising money specifically for research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer. Since the National Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1994, more than $115 million has been awarded to fund over 400 Australian-based research projects across every state and territory to improve the health and wellbeing of those affected by breast cancer. NBCF’s aspirational goal is to achieve zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Throughout October NBCF encourages the community to get involved by hosting, attending or supporting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast. Of course your event doesn’t have to be a breakfast, these days Pink Ribbon 'Breakfasts' include everything from breakfasts to gala dinners, high teas to bake sales. Your Pink Ribbon Breakfast can be big, small, simple, or glamorous – you decide! Invite ten friends or 100. Hold it at home, at work, in a cafe – anywhere. The possibilities are endless! The main aim of the Foundation is to raise the required funds to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia as well as increase breast awareness in young people, with a particular emphasis on young women. Today, over 36,000 Australian families have been supported by 105 McGrath Breast Care Nurses nationally. This service is provided free of charge and can be accessed by self-referral. The Foundation works towards realising Jane’s vision: for every family experiencing breast cancer to have access to the support of a breast care nurse, no matter where they live or financial situation. Curve Lurve is the McGrath Foundations national breast health awareness initiative. Designed specifically for young women, its goal is to communicate the importance of breast awareness, and empower young women to care for their bodies and embrace their curves. Resources provided by McGrath include the downloadable Curve Lurve App, educational materials for

FLYPINK in October Qantas Group pilots will FlyPink this October, swapping out their normal gold epaulettes (shoulder stripes) for pink epaulettes, to show their support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Australian-first initiative was started by QantasLink Captain Susan McHaffie whose aunt was diagnosed and beat breast cancer. Joining the airline in 2013, Susan was inspired by the National Breast Cancer Foundationbranded pink QantasLink aircraft to find a way to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research that would encourage airlines around the world to join together for the cause. QantasLink Chief Pilot, Captain Nathan Miller said Qantas was proud to get behind all its pilots and the FlyPink initiative, which will see pilots donate money to don the pink epaulettes when they sign on for flying duty. “Qantas is really proud to show our support for breast cancer awareness, and most importantly help raise vital funds for research,” said Captain Miller. “As a global carrier, we hope we can help our pilots take the FlyPink initiative from Australia to the world and are challenging other airlines to join us.” Pink epaulettes will be available to all 3,300 Qantas Group pilots who are encouraged to donate $5 and wear pink with pride in October. Qantas Group pilots will use the month of October to raise money through a number of other activities including National Breast Cancer Foundation collection tins in crew rooms and Qantas airports, and hold Pink Ribbon Breakfasts around the country. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 9

Hunter Valley hosts annual Balloon Fiesta!

Balloon Fiesta's are popular events and take place throughout the year all over the world, from France, to Switzerland, Swedish Lapland, Slovenia, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, California, Iowa, New York, Illinois, Utah, New Zealand, Georgia, Canberra and our very own Pokolbin - Hunter Valley. Since providing the very first passenger balloon flights in Australia in 1980, Balloon Aloft has become Australia's longest operating ballooning company - flying approximately 7,000 people each year in Australia alone. Balloon Aloft is now part of one of the world's busiest ballooning companies ''The International Balloon Company'' and is once again hosting the annual and very colourful Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta. Twenty hot air balloonists from around the country will take to the skies in a beautiful display of colour on the weekend of 17 and 18 October. For those taking part in the fiesta and also for those who prefer to have their feet on terra firma, it is a breathtaking sight and even more spectacular when accompanied by the surrounding silence that comes with the dawn. Joining them will be local pilot and current Women’s World Hot Air Ballooning Champion, Nicola Scaife. Nicola, wife of event organiser Matthew Scaife of Balloon Aloft, said the company, for whom she is a pilot, was staging the event for the fifth time. “Prior to our first fiesta, an event such as this had never been staged before over the Hunter Valley. It really is a breathtaking experience to be on board one of the many balloons as they float together at dawn over the vineyards. 14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

We are looking forward to the opportunity to do it all again,” she said. Matthew Scaife, who has more than 22 years flying hot air balloons and is the Australian National Ballooning Champion, said the company has been overwhelmed by attendance at the fiesta since its inaugural event in 2011 when 130 passengers took the opportunity to be part of history. “It was a breathtaking experience to be on board one of the 20 balloons as they floated over the vineyards together. After the success of previous years, it is our intention to continue to stage the fiesta each year, weather permitting of course,” he said. With beautiful weather conditions usually experienced in the Valley during spring, those taking part in this year’s event are expecting to take in some spectacular views. The company is hoping to have over 100 ballooning enthusiasts take part as passengers on board one of the 20 balloons flying in the fiesta. There are limited flight vouchers available so for those people interested in taking part they are encouraged to book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. For balloon enthusiasts and even those who have never been ballooning, a breathtaking early morning view from a hot-air balloon is a wondrous way to view the Hunter Valley vineyards and mountain ranges and is for many a rarely presented thrill of a lifetime. Whether flying or just wanting the chance to view the fiesta from the ground, passengers and spectators will have an early start meeting at Peterson House at around 5am. For more information on the Hunter Valley Fiesta please visit the Balloon Aloft website www.balloonaloft.com or to book your special price flight voucher call (02) 4990 9242.

Have a Mental Halloween Grab your scariest Halloween costume and get on down to Lizotte’s this Halloween… The Mentals are back!! Still as brilliant ever Mental as Anything are going strong with sell out performances around the country. The Mentals were formed (and yes this is not just an urban myth) when a group of struggling art students managed to pass themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly three decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop. Their entertaining and timeless music will have you enjoying songs such as Too Many Times, Mr Natural and Live it Up, to name a few. Prizes to be won for best dressed – so make sure you’re in full Halloween garb! For tickets visit www.lizottes.com.au

Being Better by Beating the Blues with Mayfield Medical Connection One in five Australians will experience a mental illness in 2015. Researchers have found what we eat, how often we move ourselves and how much sunshine we get may influence the risk of depression and anxiety. Even suicide rates in children and teenagers have been linked to lifestyle choices. Australian’s spend $7.6 billion/year on mental healthrelated services. For many, prevention and treatment may not be as simple as diet and exercise but even small steps to a healthier life are worthwhile exploring. Research suggests a diet rich in unprocessed vegetables, fruits, fish, meats, nuts and seeds will lower the chance of depression and anxiety across all age groups. For current suffers, specific nutrient-based supplements both in isolation and/or combination have been shown to be effective for many. These include omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, B vitamins, s-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) and n-acetyl cysteine (NAC). Regular physical activity is repeatedly found to be protective against the onset of anxiety and depression and effective in treatment and management for many. In Australia, any conversation about increasing our time in the sun is tough but also important. Vitamin D made on exposure to sunshine is protective against depression. Unfortunately Australians are the most melanoma prone people in the world; yet one third of us over 25 are Vitamin D deficient. It’s time to talk about safe sun exposure! Mental wellbeing is a multi-faceted concern. It can be difficult to know where to start…but it is essential to start. Central to your wellness is a great relationship with your GP. If you have one…nurture it. If you don’t…keep looking until you find one that works for you. Your GP can help you find your way around a wellness plan that suits you…not just prescribe medication and see you next time. So this World Mental Health Day, Saturday 10 October, protect yourself against mental illness by getting accurate advice from registered professionals. Get your GP, psychologist, dietician, naturopath and others all working together for the sake of your wellness. FASHION TIPS & TREATS With Fashion Guru & Owner of Princess Bazaar Lisa Simmonds-Webb

HELP! Formals, School Reunions and Race Day attire strategies. We’ve all been there, we open the wardrobe and stare blankly and all the “must haves” on the hanger and nothing seems right. The wedding invitation arrives and the dress code states Formal. Formal, but who’s idea of formal, please God let it NOT be the Year 12 School formal type of formal. Nobody needs to go there again, all those ringlet up do’s and OTT tizz dresses blah! Or is it the full “Black Tie” type of formal. In my book, that equals full-length evening gown and bling jewels and I don’t mind this one but it gets very expensive. Let’s face it - $350+ for a dress that’s never going to be worn again, seriously! Or, is it the modern take on formal that means if you are a young lady of say less than 25 years, you can wear any dress you like, the shorter the better with as much cleavage as possible. So where does that leave the rest of us? My experience of late means that the words formal dress on wedding invitations means please don’t wear jeans. Even if they are your very best $600 Cora Straight Super T, True Religion jeans – they are not wedding attire. Another favourite is Race Day. Darby Day is easy, black and white with any fascinator resembling a magpie and you are more than ready for Fashions on the Field. Any other race day well, where do we start? Firstly remember, fascinators are a “must”, the more ridiculous, the better. Really high heels that are going to cripple you by the end of the day are also a “must.” A tiny clutch purse that fits

nothing more than your favourite fire engine red lippy, credit card and tiny mobile phone is a “must.” And then a dress that makes you look super slim highlights your newly coiffed hair and shows off your spray tan to your best advantage is also a “must”. After much research scrolling through official Race Day Fashion websites, Vogue, etc… I can honestly tell you that there is absolutely no trend here, therefore I have absolutely no frocking idea as to what to wear for Race Day. But here is a tip, make sure its long enough to not flash your knickers in the event of a tumble due to your ridiculously high heels and one too many Chardies! Now let’s not forget the 20 Year (or in my case, 30 years) High School Reunion. Nothing gets you ready for this, now remember, or at least in my case, the last time you saw most of these people was 1983 and it was all very big hair, very big shoulder pads and lots of plastic jewellery. We’re all now in our mid-forties, (don’t do the math) most of us have had kids and OMG – seriously - What am I going to wear? A super hold in, squash-all girdle for a start. Seriously, this is a toughie. Oh, the anguish. My best advice is to pick something that makes you feel good. Here are a few pointers… Don’t go looking like a slapper, so nothing too short or revealing. Animal print is okay in moderation, heels are good (except when you are dancing around your handbag) and don’t dance with your arms over your head, that’s never been a good look (it is inevitable though I fear). Now I did find some websites that offered some basic (boring) advice but… for mine, find a boutique that offers a wide range of looks and has sales staff ready to assist (and I mean really assist) and that is suggest, fetch, style, wait on you, make you feel good and make sure that you achieve that all important WOW factor. After all, it is your high school reunion for God’s sake! Just remember “I have far too many clothes, handbags and shoes,” said no women ever and if we always had something to wear there would be no need to go shopping, can you imagine? So stay tuned for more riveting fashion advice as next month where we tackle fashions biggest question, “smart casual” the who, what, why, when and how.

Put your best foot forward to beat leg and foot pain! Body Worx WORDS: Jason Bradley

Physiotherapist at BodyWorx Physiotherapy Physiotherapy

Feet are an important part of our lives. When Cathy fell in love, she said she was "swept off her feet." When Ken wasn't sure about retiring, his wife said he had "cold feet." Laura was so sensible; her kids always said she had "both feet on the ground”, we “turn up our toes” and “kick up our heels” (not necessarily in that order). All jokes aside, Feet have an important job to do - they have to carry us around day in and day out - so it's important to give them the care and attention they deserve. Jason Bradley of BodyWorx Physiotherapy see’s clients daily complaining of leg and foot pain - so this month he shares with us the top 5 reasons we get foot and leg problems, some tips to beat the pain and a special offer to boot (no pun intended!)

you advice in regards to altering your food intake or exercise program.

3. Weak muscles

The way your body works and moves together is described as a kinetic chain. If there is a weakness in the muscles along the chain it can increase the pressure at different points along the chain. For example, a weak gluteal or bottom muscle increases pressure in the knee and foot and is a common risk factor for arthritis in the knee and heel spurs. These issues once idenitified can often be easily fixed through a regular corrective exercises. And it doesn’t need to be laborious. The majority of programs I prescribe take clients 10-15mins while watching TV.

4. Tight muscles

1 Wearing poor or inappropriate footwear

Choosing the correct shoe for each activity can mean the difference between "tripping the light fantastic" or hobbling with blisters and injuries. When participating in exercise its important to ensure you wear shoes that support and cushion your feet correctly. Brand names do not always guarantee the right choice, it’s important to update on a 6 month to yearly basis depending on the level of use. Your physio can give you advice on the best footwear suitable for you.

The majority of our patients who experience foot knee or ankle pain present with one or more tight muscles. Like weakness, a tight muscle impacts on how the body moves. Heel spurs and plantar fasciitis are often related to calf and foot arch tightness. You can stretch the calf by lunging against a wall with one leg back and use a tennis balls to press down into and massage your arch.

2. Excess weight

Over 90% of the population are ‘pronators’ which means their feet roll in. For some adults and children this happens too much or at the wrong time and needs correction. Without correction extra pressure is placed on ligaments and muscles leading to injuries like shin splints, heel spurs and Achilles tendonitis. If you are concerned about yours or your child’s feet, speak to one of the expert BodyWorx Physiotherapists and arrange a free computerised assessment for intouch magazine readers during the month of October.

Excess weight doesn’t just increase your risk of heart failure and diabetes, it also increase the pressure placed on the muscles and joint in your legs. For example, your kneecap withstands over 10 times your bodyweight in compression while running. If you increase your weight by 10kg, that’s another 100kg of pressure on your knee. Making small changes to your diet and exercise program can make vast differences to your health and weight. A dietitian and exercise physiologist can give

INTOUCH FASHION, BEAUTY, HEALTH Kelly Osbourne

Renee - Skin Juice expert

Joanne learnt more about the nature of plant oils and their skin loving or biocompatible properties and began using these oils to nourish and balance the skin in a way other cosmetic formulas couldn’t. Natural skincare at this time was very, very new and Joannes loyal beauty salon clients quickly became research subjects! "I’m pleased to say, many of my early ‘guinea pigs’ still use Skin Juice today. It wasn’t long before word spread about this innovative concept which was breaking all the ‘rules’ of skincare with cleansing oils instead of soapy formulas and night oils in place of night creams" Joanne said. "The support we received was beyond our wildest expectations and we quickly grew to a salon staff of seven with the majority of our business focused on facial treatments and skincare purchases," she said. These days Joanne is out of the salon and able to focus 100% of her time on Skin Juice, nurturing its growth and continuing to reach the growing demand for safe, healthy, natural, organic yet effective skincare.

Today, I Am:

Spring Summer ’15 By Dani Rivett (A creative soul, expert shopper and lover of all things fashion, design and art) for Westfield Kotara #fashionobsessed Today, I Am is a confident declaration of embracing who you are, exploring how style is an everevolving journey, never standing still. Fronted by Westfield Style Ambassadors Kelly Osbourne and Lara Worthington, Today, I Am invites shoppers to be whoever they want to be and embrace their own fashion evolution. Who we are today is not necessarily who we were yesterday; whether you’re feeling fearless, relaxed, free spirited or nostalgic, you can express yourself accordingly through your wardrobe. We’ve been admiring the style and individuality of Kelly Osbourne and Lara Worthington for some time now, so we are thrilled to share how they use their love of fashion as a form of self-expression. “I honestly don’t think that you can define my sense of style and I like it that way,” says Kelly, who loves to wear something that is a little bit quirky, with an impressive mix of classic, retro and rock & roll glamour-inspired pieces. She can easily rock a girly dress, typically featuring lace or a statement print, and of course, pull off an outfit with a little more grunge.

20 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

“Be yourself and let your fashion choices show the world who you are. Everywhere I go, I take my mood with me. I know my fashion choices are not for everyone, but there’s really nothing too it. I just wear what I want to wear,” she continues. Lara Worthington (née Bingle) is a woman who has re-invented herself, and today she is a mother, wife and her own boss, currently living a beautiful life in New York. Well known for her signature hair and style, Lara says she’s “not much of a believer in following or conforming. That goes against the whole idea of being yourself, accepting yourself as who you are instead of imitating someone else. For a woman to seem effortless is the most attractive thing”. “I’m a uniform dresser. I would wear the same thing to work as I would on a plane or a play date. I don’t change my look for different moments, so it makes it very quick and easy for me to get dressed every morning,” admits Lara Westfield has collaborated with Australian Fashion Film Award winner and director Gracie Otto and Style Me Romy’s Romy Frydman to create their take on the Today, I am concept. The film revolves around a love story starring actors Thomas Cocquerel and Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and showcases international and Australian fashion designers including Chanel, Miu Miu, Gucci, Zimmerman and Saint Larent. Get the Juice on SKIN JUICE this month at INDULGENCES Skin Juice was founded in 1996 by local beauty therapist Joanne Dampney. For eight years, Joanne owned and operated a successful salon with rituals and treatments that focused on holistic and natural choices. At the same time, she struggled to find products that reflected the ethos of her life and business. Joanne gradually began to utilise her knowledge of aromatherapy, combining this with her fascination for plant oils and their therapeutic effects. She began researching the function and application of various plant oils on the skin and the results when applied using different methods. For example cleansing oils opposed to suds up style cleansers, which was a very unique concept back when Skin Juice was first born.

A Taste of Italy BY MEGAN O’SULLIVAN

You only have to turn a corner and you’ll see something extraordinary in Italy, whether it’s a crumbling Roman ruin in the nation’s capital, or a group of laughing nuns. The most seasoned traveller can’t fail to be impressed by the Colosseum, or get a sense of how terrified combatants must have been two thousand years ago. And even though the Trevi Fountain is invariably teeming with visitors from all over the globe, it is gorgeous. As for the Vatican, with its own postal system and extraordinary ceiling by none other than Michelangelo, it’s a must-see. Especially in the company of a Local Tour Guide who will make sure you come away with insights into why Michangelo painted certain faces on certain biblical figures. You don’t have to be an art buff to enjoy it. It’s genuinely funny. For those who really want to savour the taste of Italy- you can do this with a specialised food and wine tour. Each day bringing opportunities to talk to locals, learn and eat! Even though you will visit many beautiful places during your holiday the experience of your lunchtime cooking class can be the most memorable experience, not to mention gourmet extravaganza, of your holiday! Armed with some euros and a shopping list, your small group is delivered to local markets where your senses of sight, smell and sound

are immediately aroused. Fresh produce aplenty, the loud, friendly shopkeepers (with personalities as colourful as the juicy red tomatoes) are ready to assist. Due to the linguistic barrier grocery shopping is done by joyful creative sign language, with plenty of food tasting opportunities and much laughter shared with new acquaintances. Once the list is complete you are welcomed to ‘Be my guest’ in the restaurant of an Italian family for a delightful day of hands on homecooking and lively conversation. With flour-caked hands you will sip local wines in a centuries-old kitchen, while following generations old cooking procedures from an Italian restaurateur on how to roll, fill and fold pasta. There will be champagne and music from a local musician, and when you sit down at your table to feast on your creations, there may even be a little daytime dancing between courses. Specialised guided food tours are more about experiences than sightseeing, with itineraries taking you to regional areas. These holidays perfectly capture the thrill of being in Italy offering simply the best moments and memories in a delicious blend of relaxation, flavoursome food, and wonderful cultural experiences. INTOUCH WITH HAMILTON Devastation wreaked on The Kent in 1989 Photograph by Craig Smith of photograph hanging in The Kent

1872, two platforms (no railway buildings) for the Great Northern Line were opened. But, it was not until 1890 that the NSW government committed to build a proper station with large platforms, waiting rooms, a booking office, refreshment rooms, staff rooms, a high level bridge and a footbridge for the Beaumont Street crossing. By 1906, Beaumont Street was starting to resemble the main street of a typical Australian country town.

Beaumont Street in 1906 (Photograph by Ralph Snowball, part of the Norm Barney Photographic Collection, courtesy of Cultural Collections, University of Newcastle, Australia)

Hamilton Over The Years It’s the colourful, multicultural suburb of Newcastle which includes the three inner suburbs of Hamilton North, East and South and it comes with a fascinating history that dates back to the discovery of coal near St Peter’s Church in the area known as Cameron’s Hill. From this discovery sprung the township of Hamilton and what was then a dusty mining town is now a trendy and vibrant suburb that has seen rapid growth, hardship, devastation and in recent years has been forced to reinvent itself on more than one occasion. Hamilton became a municipality on 11 December 1871 and was named in honour of Edward Terrick Hamilton, the then Governor of the board of directors of the Australian Agricultural Company who operated the mines, owned most of the land and were instrumental in the development of the area. The commercial hub is centred around Beaumont Street which boasts a vibrant multicultural atmosphere and is lined with an array of restaurants and cafes, retail, fashion and commercial outlets as well as day to day services such as pharmacies, banks, real estate agents, florists, hairdressers, fruit shops and delicatessens. Beaumont street is also commonly referred to as ‘’eat street’’ and offers a wide choice of culinary delights from all over the world and in particular Italian, Greek, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Himalayan, Mexican, Turkish and Lebanese. It’s a food lovers delight!

Named after Frank Beaumont who arrived in Newcastle in 1853 as Mine Manager for the Australian Agricultural Company, Beaumont Street wasn’t always the eclectic, trendy high street that it is today. Instead it began an unimpressive life as the poor relative of Denison Street which in the late 1800s was ‘the main road’ to Newcastle through the mining settlements of Borehole, Pit Town and Happy Flat. At the time, Denison Street was where it all happened with almost every intersection home to a boisterous public house. In comparison, Beaumont Street was a sandy, overgrown muddy bush track making its way from Glebe Hill towards the present location of Hamilton Station. Horse drawn buses were the only means of transport; otherwise people walked from home, to work in the mines or the few shops, over the deep rutted tracks. It was a ‘two mile walk’ to Newcastle. In the mining settlements, only the basics were available to families which meant Newcastle was the place to shop. This was tough on the local shopkeepers who relied on the miners fortnightly pay packets to survive. By 1872 there were just five shopkeepers in Hamilton, including the Borehole Cooperative Store and Donald’s store, an early Hamilton landmark. By 1891 there were close to 5,000 people living in Hamilton, a sizeable community that would begin to demand more localised shopping. The demand for a railway station at Hamilton, suitable for commuters, had also been growing and in that same year,

Rail travel was highly popular and convenient and the new station became a drawcard for commercial development which had a significant and lasting impact on the future development of Beaumont Street. Establishments such as The Sydney Junction Hotel, the Hamilton Station Hotel, and later the Kent Hotel and The Northern Star Hotel, all benefitted from the increased trade and drew patrons away from the Denison Street hotels. Over the coming decades, most of the Denison Street hotels closed, leaving only The Exchange Hotel and The Bennett Hotel. But, it wasn't just the trains that initiated the decline of Denison Street and the promotion of Beaumont Street. The introduction of steam trams, running along Tudor Street westwards, as well as along Maitland Road to Mayfield, diverted people away from Denison Street . By 1915, Hamilton had a population of over 10,000 people and the shops and businesses in Beaumont Street continued to flourish. Banks and many other services sprang up and land values soared. Residents no longer had to travel to Newcastle to have their shopping needs met as Hamilton was by then the main business thoroughfare, and the most active shopping precinct outside of Newcastle. Over the next 100 years, Beaumont Street would undergo many changes shaping what it is today. Perhaps the most significant and traumatic event in its long history, has been the 1989 Newcastle earthquake which left the people of Hamilton and business owners devastated. Beaumont Street was closed for business for at least 5 weeks after the quake, while demolition areas were made safe, buildings assessed and essential repairs carried out. Unfortunately for some businesses, such as Clancy’s Supermarket, the devastation of the earthquake would be a point of no return. The Northern Star Cafe was more fortunate and sustained minimal damage, but it was a different story for the Niagara Cafe and adjoining shop which was partially demolished. The Niagara Cafe became Donald’s Late Night Pharmacy which was damaged beyond repair.

Buildings that had been severely affected like the Kent Hotel, took much longer to be restored. The Hamilton municipal building (circa. 1919) was demolished and some buildings had their future disputed because they were considered to have heritage value. Over time concept plans were developed for the "newlook" Beaumont Street and urban designers sought to preserve the areas European culture and heritage which was predominantly Greek, Italian and Macedonian. Disaster struck again eighteen years later, when Hamilton was one of the worst affected areas of the June 2007 "Pasha Bulker" storms which wreaked havoc and caused wide-spread damage ($1.35b) throughout the region. The Hamilton community, is known for its resilience, and the area recovered from both events and went on to rebuild and reinvent itself.

Now, almost 26 years since the earthquake and eight years since the floods, Beaumont Street is once again on the brink of reinventing itself and celebrating its unique heritage with annual festival and events. Add to this the boutique shopping experience, a continually evolving coffee culture, an endless choice of authentic restaurants and cafes, new upmarket wine bars and refurbished hotels serving an extensive range of regional wines and showcasing the best of the craft beer scene. If you haven't explored the cultural richness of Hamilton or experienced the best of Beaumont Street - well now is the time! It won't remain undiscovered for too long. Dragon Dances, Chinese performers, Chinese workshops, dumplings and trade deals will all be on the menu during this year’s 2015 NEWCASTLE CHINA WEEK which will take place from 28 SEPTEMBER TO 4 OCTOBER in locations throughout Newcastle. The organisers of last year’s Newcastle's China Festival were completely overwhelmed with the response to the inaugural event with the 2014 event attracting over 20,000 participants – transforming Hamilton’s Beaumont Street into our very own Chinatown. Presented by the Confucius Institute at the University of Newcastle, Hamilton Business Chamber and The City of Newcastle, this year's event has grown into the 2015 Newcastle China Week and will showcase the growing cultural, social and economic relations between China and the Hunter Region through a program of educational, cultural and business events. The Newcastle China Business Forum will be held at Watt Street Arc from 8:00am until 12:30pm on Thursday 1 October and will

provide an opportunity for local businesses to explore engagement with China. On Sunday 4 October, Beaumont Street will be treated to an Asian feast of entertainment with performances that include a visiting performance troupe from China, Lion Dances, Dragon Dances, stilt walkers and local Chinese performers mixing it up with Chinese-themed food and street stalls. INTOUCH WITH HAMILTON What other services do you provide – medical or non medical? We provide free in-store consultations and advice on many different issues – medical and non-medical. As mentioned before we provide advise on weight loss and also provide custom nutritional supplements to improve fatigue and concentration for adults and children. We now also have an extensive skincare product range developed and made at Visionary Health using only the best quality ingredients. The range includes moisturisers, cleansers, toners and serums suitable for all ages and skin types. Visionary Health is often described as being ''unique''. What is so different and unique about the business? Customised solutions and natural health is all we do. So why are we so unique? Visionary Health treats the cause of the medical problem with nutritional medicine internally, (you are what you eat), as well as specialised compounded preparations externally. Our treatments continue to develop as world wide research evolves. We also have three modern, well-equipped compounding laboratories and a full herbal dispensary with over a hundred different extracts. We always have pharmacists and herbalists on hand to provide the highest level of customer service and quality products. It is this ability to customise medical solutions and the integration of combined treatment protocols that make Visionary Health so unique. In short, our approach is to treat the cause of the problem rather than the “band-aid” remedy.

Visionary Health Compounding Chemist A unique and innovative NATURAL HEALTH compounding pharmacy. Visionary Health was founded in 2002, when Alan Malouf and Roch Shamley recognised a fast growing need for a more customised service, based on natural therapies and compounded medicines in Newcastle. Today, thirteen years later, Visionary Health Compounding Chemist is a unique and innovative compounding pharmacy on Beaumont Street in Hamilton with a reputation for delivering outstanding results. This month we asked Visionary Health pharmacist Daniel Do to explain just what is involved in compounding and what are the unique benefits offered by a compounding chemist. What is pharmaceutical compounding? Pharmaceutical compounding is about the mixing of medicines and pharmaceutical drugs to fit the unique needs of the patient. At Visionary Health, compounded medications are “made from scratch” – working together with doctors and patients to determine their special requirements. We use compounding to provide a solution customised to the patients individual and often unique needs. I get the impression that little is known about compounding is this because it is relatively new? No not at all! At one stage in history - probably around the 1930s and 1940s, nearly all prescriptions were compounded but with the introduction of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and ‘60s, compounding rapidly declined. As a result, the pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications slowly changed to that of a dispenser 26 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

of manufactured pharmaceuticals and today many pharmacists lack the training to compound medications. Another unfortunate outcome is that the “one-size-fits-all” nature of many mass-produced medications meant that some patients’ needs were not being met. So what are the benefits of pharmaceutical compounding? Compounding enables a trained pharmacist to prepare tailormade formulations for patients which includes prescribing an exact dose of a medication instead of a one dose tablet/ capsule fits all approach. It also allows for changing a medication from a solid tablet or capsule into a liquid and the avoidance of non-essential ingredients which may trigger allergic reactions in a patient - such as gluten, lactose, preservatives, dyes and even sugar. It also allows for the preparation of medications which have been previously discontinued. What areas of medicine can benefit from compounded products? All areas of medicine can benefit, we even help pets! We commonly receive requests from local doctors, specialists and hospitals for additional options to better suit patient needs. For example, everyone experiences pain differently, so we often prepare custom pain control gels specific to the types of pain a patient is experiencing. Does Visionary Health specialise in any particular areas of medicine? We have a number of areas of speciality that include bio-identical or natural hormone replacement for women, weight loss, nutritional treatments for Autism, chronic fatigue amino acid supplements, anti-aging formulations, pain control, sleep improvement and specialised nutraceuticals for many disease states.

Can you give an example of how the unique services of Visionary Health can assist a patient with unique needs and how this all came together? Sure, in this example a young boy (Ewan) aged 8 years old from Newcastle was diagnosed with Autism. His mother, a school teacher, did not want to medicate him with conventional drugs. We referred her to a MINDD (Metabolic, Immunological, Neurological, Digestive Disorder) trained doctor who analysed Ewan's behaviour and requested urine tests, blood tests as well as hair analysis. The blood tests came back showing that Ewan’s liver and gut were not functioning correctly. The urine tests showed a Copper/Zinc imbalance and the hair analysis showed a toxic level of lead. The doctor prescribed bio-medical nutritional supplements to address each of these disorders. Visionary Health had to compound the tailor made nutrient formula into both a morning and evening capsule, designed to lower the heavy metal Copper and elevate the immune enhancing mineral Zinc. He was also given an essential fatty acid liquid to improve concentration. Heavy metal chelating drops were provided to bind and remove the lead and digestive enzymes. Probiotics were used to treat the gut dysfunction. As a result of this treatment and after just a few weeks, Ewans' mum reported that he was more settled and that he could sit without fidgeting and rocking in his chair. His concentration and his schoolwork had also noticeably improved. Further gains were expected with time as the body and the brain were being nourished with the correct nutrients required for normal healthy functioning. A very pleasing result for this little boy and of course his family. Here is an interesting and quite possibly a little known fact: The World Health Organization estimates that 75% of the world’s population rely on herbs and botanic medicine for their health care. Also, approximately 25% of modern drugs are derived from plants, so I suppose it makes sense why the search for new drugs derived from plants has been accelerated in recent years.

A New Style of Real Estate of their lives. From single mothers to widows, Anne says that it is clear that a good dose of understanding can make the world of difference.

Not so long ago the atypical real estate agency client could be described as “married with a couple of kids and a dog.” However, the makeup of today’s buyers and sellers looks much different than it did even 10 years ago and its clear that a more personal approach and understanding of clients needs is paramount. For starters, the number of non-family households (a household in which the primary resident lives alone) has increased significantly, and many of these households are single women. Dealing with the sale of a home for these people is perhaps more stressful than for any other seller as they are doing it alone. Anne Alexander from YourAgency in Hamilton says that an increasing number of her client referrals are single women at varying stages

Sellers who find themselves in this position appreciate both honesty and availability – both of which Anne has in spades, so it’s no wonder YourAgency has been able to successfully attract and service this growing market. David Caldwell of YourAgency says “the YourAgency mission is to act for fewer clients so that we can provide one-on-one personal service and devote all of our time and attention to successfully selling your property.” It’s a big call which often involves around the clock availability and going above and beyond the service you would typically expect to receive from your agent, but this focus is certainly a refreshing approach and one that is reflected in the exceptional feedback they receive from satisfied clients. YourAgency is definitely changing the way real estate is being transacted. Quite simply it’s a new style of real estate. Everything they do is focused on adding value and empowering their clients and team to make great decisions that deliver brilliant results.

The vault is empty, the bank has closed and Newcastle's trendiest wine bar is open… and for wine enthusiasts this couldn’t have happened soon enough. The Reserve Wine Bar exploded onto the scene like a shaken Champagne bottle in October 2013, giving Newcastle a wine venue the likes of which had not been seen before. Since then they have been restless in their pursuit of all things vinous; offering the city over thirty different wine dinners as well as tastings and unique one off events. Housed in the former ANZ building on the corner of Hunter and Bolton streets, the 120-capacity wine bar with its high ceilings, locked vault and wrought iron stools is Newcastle’s first grape emporium, a place to worship wine in all its guises. Big on buzz, high on charm but refreshingly devoid of pretention, the wine list at 250 strong, focuses on the best in NSW and Australia  as well as some tempting offerings

''We wanted the Reserve to reflect our region and NSW. It’s not a parochial approach, it’s more a case of sharing the excitement of what’s in our backyard'' says Patrick. "Our own backyard (including the Hunter Valley and further afield) was always of paramount importance. That’s why when you read our list you’ll see NSW and the ACT represented first, then the rest of Australia and various treats from around the globe. We want people to taste and try wines that they’ve not encountered before because life’s too short to drink the same wine or even worse - bad wine." When it comes to food, chef Wayne Isaac has designed a small plates menu to complement the wine selection which is just perfect for grazing and sharing but could just as easily become a full meal. Similar to the wine, the local theme has continued here with only produce and producers within a 100 kilometre radius of Newcastle being sourced. Relax, take a stool at the bar, or sink into a lounge, drink what you want and discover your vinous groove. The Reserve with its spectacular wine list and wonderfully crafted events gets a massive thumbs up and has put Hunter Street Mall back on the map as one of the best places to go in Newcastle for a great night out. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 33

LAKE MACQUARIE

NEWCASTLE

Food + Wine EXPO Lake Macquarie’s ultimate craft beer and dining destination.

WORDS + IMAGE: Jessica Rouse Bringing the foodie experience to Newcastle, the Food and Wine Expo showcased a taste of some of the best Australian wine and produce, and I was lucky enough to enjoy it! Filling the centre of the Newcastle Entertainment Centre were some of the best Hunter Valley wineries including Peterson House, Bimbadgen Estate, Eagles Rest Estate, Draytons Family Wines, and Tamburlaine Organic Wines to merely name a few.

“When you break them down to their bare essentials it’s an opportunity for people to eat good food, have a wine, and discuss what they like about food and the food that they’re eating so they’re very social dinners.” Food should be an experience, not just a bite on the run. As Ben says, food and wine are the best things to link to experiences and in particular “smells are the things that conjure the most memories”.

Tamburlaine were particularly popular, even on The dining experience at the expo, without a quiet day. Tamburlaine is a certified organic question, provided delicious potent memories. winery and one of the largest producers of “I think it is a good way for people to express organic wine in Australia, using a combination their passion for food and also meet likeof organic grapes from their wineries in both minded people who have that same passion” the Hunter and Orange. said Ben. Nicholas Williams, a spirited employee of the winery, says that the most popular wine at Cellar Door at the moment is the Sauvignon Blanc whilst his personal favourite is the Hunter Reserve Chambourcin. “Wine is something which is individual, just as taste is something which is individual” said Nicholas, which explains Tamburlaine’s large selection and variety of wines. Tamburlaine showcases its plethora of wines at many shows and expos bringing an awareness of sustainable organic wine growing to customers. “It’s a good market to get into, it’s a smart market to get into, because customers are becoming more savvy in choosing what they want” and organic is simply one of those things people are becoming more savvy about.

With a focus on quality ingredients and classic flavours, the menu features premium quality dishes perfect for sharing. With a range of smaller share plate and snack items, as well as larger main-style share plates, each dish has its own unique fusion of flavour that pairs perfectly with the extensive drinks menu. Following season four of Masterchef in 2012, Ben has released two cookbooks, travelled overseas with best mate and 2012 Masterchef winner Andy Allen for their television series Andy and Ben Eat the World and is currently finishing up filming on season two of Bens Menu which has recently premiered on Channel Ten. "Masterchef Australia has woken society up and changed our perceptions on both chefs and food. Food is an integral part of our everyday comings and goings with people having conversations with their kids, conversations with work colleagues about where they ate and what they had. Food conversations are cool" said Ben. Even more predominant is “foodporn” on social media and all of you food bloggers and foodies will be pleased to hear that Ben has absolutely no problem with you taking photos of his food. In fact he encourages it. He’s guilty of it himself.

Obviously wine is the perfect complement to food. And with Hunter Valley producers such as Hunter Belle Cheese, combined with Pukara Estate’s vinegars, pesto’s and oils, you cannot go wrong. “I like when I send food out in the restaurant, I like that reaction when everyone’s quiet and Also on show was one of Victoria's finest wine everyone’s phone comes out” because people exports Taltarni and their partner in crime love the food. “They’re the moments you live Masterchef alumni Ben Milbourne (who for as a chef.” headed the expo as both one of the celebrity chefs for the demonstration cooking stage So fellow foodies - snap away! and the head chef for Goelet’s degustation dining experience which he thoroughly enjoys). 36 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

New and Stylish local for Lake Macquarie Crew Belmont 16s has launched its brand new craft beer and dining outlet, The Boat Shed Bar + Galley, providing the answer to many Lake Macquarie residents’ prayers by creating the perfect destination for contemporary dining close to home. A relaxed, social destination set to become the area’s new ‘local’, The Boat Shed Bar offers a great selection of craft beers, a carefully curated list of local and international wines, top shelf spirits and martinis, plus a menu comprising of small and large share plates, one handed morsels and a range of hearty dishes. With a focus on quality ingredients and classic, sophisticated flavours, the menu features premium quality dishes perfect for sharing. With a range of smaller share plate and snack items, as well as larger main-style share plates, each dish has its own unique fusion of flavour that pairs perfectly with the extensive drinks menu. David Page, Executive Chef explains, “We really wanted to focus on sourcing the highest quality, freshest local ingredients to create our menu. We are using produce like beautiful Yamba prawns, Macleay Valley wild rabbit, Grim Valley beef from Tasmania; really only the very best ingredients from regions in Australia famous for turning out great produce.” With quality ingredients doing the talking, the result is a menu that speaks volumes as a unique and eclectic mix of dishes citing flavour influences from around the globe. The Boat Shed Bar offers a wide selection of beer styles and flavours including the ever popular James Squire and Little Creatures. There has also been attention put to sourcing local up-and-coming beer brands to complement the main players. “The Newcastle and Hunter region is gaining momentum as a rising star in the Australian craft beer scene, with some first class brewers right here in the Hunter and

Lake Macquarie areas,” says Adam Kluft, Food and Beverage Manager. “It makes sense that we would want to showcase some of these local guys, as the demand is certainly there.” Locals like Six Strings and Murrays feature in the range with the intention to rotate guest taps on a regular basis. Intimate, modern and relaxed, the interiors provide the perfect back drop for many a social gathering, whether it be after-work drinks, date night or a group celebration. While the fit-out is contemporary, it is also thoughtful to the history of the space. The area was previously used to store boats for many years, with the name The Boat Shed Bar + Galley being a clever play on what the space literally used to be. Subtle nods to sailing can be seen throughout the venue, with a range of historic sailing imagery and Club trophies proudly on display. In fact, Gazeway, the first Belmont 16 foot skiff to win an Australian championship, has been converted into a table and will continue to live on in the Boat Shed Bar as a memento of the rich history of the Club. Boasting innovative technology with stateof-art audio visual systems, the Boat Shed Bar is also the perfect ‘big event’ venue, with multiple screens to catch live sport culminating in the 141 inch video wall, arguably one of the biggest in the Newcastle region. “The opening of the Boat Shed Bar + Galley is an exciting development for not only 16s, but also the local area as a whole. The Lake Macquarie area has really been crying out for something like this. We are still catering to our traditional Club members with the 16s offering, but now The Boat Shed Bar + Galley with its new state-of-the art bar and kitchen provides a destination for those customers looking for something a little more contemporary and on-trend” explains Scott Williams, Belmont 16s CEO. The Boat Shed Bar + Galley is open lunch through to dinner 7 days, opening until late on weekends. Digby Fixit a lifelong dream for local author

CERTIFICATE III IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & CARE DIPLOMA OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & CARE

42 STATION ST, WARATAH | PH 4938 7200 TO FIND A CHILDCARE CENTRE NEAR YOU VISIT WWW.TILLYSCHILDCARE.COM.AU

Renee Price has been writing children’s stories and songs since her primary school years. Spending eight years as a teacher in early childhood settings and primary schools, it wasn’t until 2010, following the birth of her first child, that she rediscovered her love for writing, and decided to take it seriously. She wanted her work to shine beyond the notepad. Renee completed a short course in writing for children, and continued to pen stories, with some submitted to traditional publishers. After an agonising wait, she was given the friendly ‘thanks, but no thanks’ response, but continued working on her craft, despite the setbacks. In 2012, she attained the role of Editorial Coordinator at Newcastle’s Child magazine, and within this role, composed reviews for children’s books and music. It was here, that she accessed a wonderful array of books and began studying the world of children’s literature with a different perspective – a critiquing eye. She continued working on her own manuscripts, and had two assessed through the NSW Writers’ Centre. This gave Renee the clarity she required to look at her work objectively and after much

deliberation, decided to put those stories aside and work on something fresh. In 2014, Renee created Digby Fixit – a curious and imaginative young boy, who loved mysteries and ‘fixing’ problems. For many weeks, day after day, she worked on Digby’s first story and when she felt it was at its best, sent it to be assessed through Kids’ Book Review. The feedback given was much more encouraging, and a professional editor saw promise in Renee’s work, and offered to help refine the story. Three months on, the manuscript was ready. Fresh. Exciting. Entertaining. It was titled, Digby’s Moon Mission – the tale of a curious boy and his quest to fix the dark, inspired by Renee’s oldest son. Renee knew her story shone. Rather than endure the gruelling process of submitting to publishers and awaiting their approval or rejection, she decided to selfpublish. She had spent some time researching the process and what was involved, and although it was daunting, there was much to learn and be rewarded for. As publisher, Renee had 100% creative control, and the sense of accomplishment for the countless hours put into the publishing process. After contracting a highly sought after illustrator and book designer team (Anil Tortop and Tadaa Book), and researching printing and distribution options, Renee looked at the actual likelihood of funding a self-published title. It was tough. To get from concept to published and printed books, it was going to cost between $6000 and $8000. ► www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 41

INTOUCH FAMILY AND COMMUNITY Renee knew several creatives who had operated successful crowdfunding campaigns and considered the benefits of adopting this approach for funding her book. She began thorough research into crowdfunding through Pozible and began working on her own campaign to launch in July 2014. The goal was $6000 in 40 days – her aim was to have 250 pledgers ‘pre-order’ a copy of her book for $20 each. Renee started a Digby Fixit Facebook page a few weeks before her campaign’s launch. She wanted to bring awareness to her book and dream of becoming a published author. She also gained great support from family, friends and booklovers who were willing to back her project. Within two weeks, she had a few hundred followers. A campaign video was then recorded (including the soundtrack written by Renee and her partner, Aaron Hipwell), rewards were detailed, project goals were expressed and the launch went off with a bang. Renee reached the $6000 target with 19 days remaining on her campaign. At its conclusion, the project was 120% funded. In December 2014, Renee published Digby’s Moon Mission. Following outstanding reviews on sites such as Kids’ Book Review, Buzz Words, Boomerang Books and Creative Kids Tales, Renee continued to share the Digby love, recorded a theme song, YouTube book reading and began working on the next story in the series (due for release in late

National World Skills where she competed against the best fashion students in the Country.

2016). Renee wanted to stand out from the crowd. She wanted a unique approach to marketing her book, and bringing Digby Fixit into the hearts of more and more children and their families. With a background in music and performance, Renee assessed the possibility of incorporating her two loves – music and literature, and in March 2015, Digby Fixit Live! was born. As a theatrical adaptation of Digby’s Moon Mission, Digby Fixit Live! features storytelling songs and puppetry, perfectly suited to audiences in the three to seven year age group. Digby Fixit Live! debuted in the July school holidays across four local libraries; all soldout shows. Feedback was extremely positive, which gave Renee the confidence to take her show on the road, and she now performs for early childhood services and primary schools. Her plan is to adapt each story in the Digby Fixit series, and tour nationally with the range of stories, unique characters and songs featured. She is still pinching herself. “I’m just a gal who had a dream, and decided to give it a shot. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain, and I’m proud of myself for sticking with it. I have a good feeling, that there are plenty more wonderful things in store for Digby and I. Watch this space.” For more information on Renee and her work visit – www.createitkids.com.au ■

New mobile lifeguard tower at Redhead A new mobile lifeguard tower has been installed at Redhead Beach, which will assist lifeguards to carry out their patrols. Council’s Manager Leisure Services, Brad Sutton, said the new tower will boost lifeguards’ patrol capabilities ahead of the busy summer swimming and surfing season. “The new mobile lifeguard tower is similar to those being used at Bondi Beach and will give our lifeguards extra height, which is paramount for effective supervision and detection of a variety of coastal hazards,” Mr Sutton said. The tower was funded by Lake Macquarie Council, with financial assistance from Department of Primary Industries, through its Observation Tower Grant Program.

Consciously

Creating the Life you want By Richard Ford Everything in life is a choice. We are not always conscious of the choices we are making, nevertheless we are making choices constantly and consistently about what we want. We usually make these choices from our belief, of which many are outside our consciousness.

something you want from a place of scarcity or “I haven’t got enough” then in the end you will not get your choice. What you will experience is an outcome that is consistent with where the choice is made from - more experiences of “not enoughness”. However, if you make a choice from a loving mindset, in that you see yourself as abundant and can create what you truly want, then you are likely to receive the outcome that you have chosen or something more significant. Traditionally in goal setting we have been told to get clear about our goals, focus on them and move towards them.

Passionate People With Purpose

Rethink Financial Group (Rethink) has hosted their first public event, Passionate People With Purpose. The event was held over an intimate lunch at the Surfhouse and the format was two one-on-one interviews that delved into the lives of two successful, passionate women that have created their careers in the ordinarily traditional world of financial services.

With a head for business and a heart for family, Andy is kicking some serious goals After a stint in Sydney, Andy moved back to the Hunter with his wife to settle down and raise a family. If relocating, buying a house and raising three kids (under five) wasn’t enough to keep him busy, Andy also decided to start his own business. “While living in a cosy two bedroom cottage is fine while the girls are still young, Katrina and I needed a little more space in the house (and maybe some more sleep). Rethink has helped me to minimise the financial risks involved in my business, giving us the freedom to make some much needed lifestyle changes – like renovating our home.” Now Andy is taking things in his stride, with a worldwide client base and a solid stream of work. Andy and Katrina are now in the financial position to enjoy time together as a family and add an extra storey to their house to create the perfect home for their growing family. We’d like to acknowledge your achievements Andy, you really are doing your family proud.

milestones from complete mindset shifts to interviewing Neil Armstrong. The event began with Cassandra sharing her story about starting her original financial planning business with her husband Dustin Kavanagh at the age of 25. At one stage during the interview Cassandra opened up and shared how only a few years ago she felt that to be able to work doing something she was personally passionate about, that she would have to leave the business that she helped build. It was at this time she enrolled in a course by Tara Mohr called Playing Big. This pivotal moment for Cassandra when she learnt that she didn’t actually need to leave the business, “all I needed to do was to change my mindset around what I was doing in the business” and from there Cassandra introduced some of the things she is personally passionate about into Rethink: a holistic business community that offers multiple life changing services to clients, daily meditation for the Rethink team, a healthy café with affordable lunches for the Rethink team, personal development life coaching for the team and she encourages the team, clients and people in her life to find their triggers (the things they’re passionate about). As soon as Vanessa took the stage and started sharing her story as a child growing up in Gunnedah with devoted parents including her father who immigrated from Serbia and enforced she was a winner before she’d even started anything, then studying at the University of Canberra with a list of geniuses’ like Will Anderson and Adam Harvey (Peter Harvey’s son), it was clear to the captivated audience that she was destined to have achieved amazing things and with stories to match.

Both ladies Cassandra Kavanagh (Little Big Boss of Rethink) After a few different roles in financial services, Vanessa felt her and Vanessa Stoykov (CEO of evolution media group), have chosen to create their businesses to be anything but traditional. creative desire wanting to be stimulated and decided to start her own business, evolution media group, at the age Across the two interviews the audience got to hear each of 26. speaker’s unique and inspiring journeys which covered

Fast track several years and evolution media group has created numerous reality finance television shows, one of those being The Bottom Line, on network 9, which produced the most substantive interview with commander Neil Armstrong before he died. Vanessa shared with intrigued guests that “to be brutally honest he (Neil Armstrong) was a regular guy, not looking for fame. He was quite pragmatic, he was an engineer.” Vanessa described her interpretation of Neil as “this guy did not want the fame of being the first man on the moon, he was just doing his job.” However, as Vanessa reflected on her experience with Neil Armstrong you could see and hear her recognise the historic significance of what she had been a part of. When she spoke about the moment when they showed Neil Armstrong footage of President Kennedy talking about the moon landing and watched him almost tear up as he watched the footage, Vanessa described this event as “a moment in human history.” Guests received a very unique opportunity where Vanessa took them on a journey introducing the wealth of inspiring, successful and world changing people that she has met, from Lindy Chamberlain, Gabi Hollows, Lord Jeffrey Archer to Curtis Stone. As Vanessa introduced some the outstanding people that she’s interviewed from the program, she gave the audience her exclusive experience and personal learnings from each of those meetings. Vanessa’s favourite interview todate is Bryce Courtney. “This guy just reeks passion” Vanessa expressed. Interpret the colours and trends of the season in a way that is your unique look. Spring is always an exciting time. New life and beautiful colours. Where to start? What colours are on trend? What is the name of your look? Are there any rules? A good place to start is to have an overall look at all the spaces in your home both inside and out. Make sure every corner is used to the best of its advantage. Maybe you have a sunny corner that is being overlooked, a chair or two and a coffee table creates another room to sit and relax, enjoy the extra sunshine. Make a list of must stay items and the items you would like to change. Look at images of rooms in magazines, on Pinterest for any inside or outside areas that “talk” to you or inspire you. A common theme will start to appear and you will see a style that you would love to live with in your own home. Blue is back and for Newcastle it never left, so we are ahead of the current trend! Blues and teals in all shades, mints and peach. The most striking standouts are indigo and navy. Navy is being viewed as the new replacement for black or grey. These darker shades pair with some of the beautiful on-trend colours this season. Coppers and the “blush” pinks add a beautiful look to these rich blues. And don’t listen to “blue and green should never be seen” hype because using green against the correct blue can look very fresh, elegant and tailored.

At Insideout this month we are releasing Greg Natales new range of cushions. Greg has incorporated a beautiful interpretation of this seasons colours into his range. Head in-store to see them. Copper has been gaining popularity over the last year and we are seeing gold and brass being used in accessories and lighting more. Colour can be used in many different ways for many different looks. Tone on tone, contrasting, naturals and exotic using patterns and textures to add extra interest, look at the new fashions in our stores as decorating colours for our homes stem from fashion trends. Pattern adds texture and can complete your certain look. A trend this year is for Shibori prints (Japanese tie dying) and exotic ethnic prints. You could once define a look by just a few different styles, French-provincial, Beachhouse, Hamptons, Retro or Modern for example. Not anymore! New looks are being created and are influenced by current trends. With so many choices in furniture styles, a lot of consumers are making wiser choices and buying less but quality pieces that can last for years and be changed with trends when you get the urge to change your style. When wanting to make some serious changes help is always available. Ask an expert for advice before you make any major furniture purchases and research images to help you find what you really want to live with. Spring 2015 encourages using every nook of your home (inside and out) to create a serene environment away from the stress of our busy lives.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

Help transform Newcastle this October! Once again, CityServe is calling upon volunteers to fill a full diary of service projects aimed at transforming Newcastle over several weekends of work. The projects will improve areas right across the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie local government areas (LGAs), with projects chosen in each ward. "Council is pleased to again take part in CityServe Newcastle and to continue the fantastic partnership that we have grown with CityServe over the past few years," said Newcastle Lord Mayor Cr Nuatali Nelmes at the announcement of this year’s projects. "Our city has benefited greatly from the work of CityServe volunteers to give our city a spruce up in past years and a number of great projects are planned for this year as well." Rick Prosser CityServe Chairman says that “Cityserve is a unique initiative, with churches, businesses, Council and the community working together. CityServe is a reflection of the people's love for their city. We all can’t do everything but we can all do something. Contributing to our community for a day is doable and with others guaranteed enjoyable!"

Newcastle projects will target public facilities from the coast to the western corridor, with volunteer teams cleaning, repairing, painting and sprucing up picnic sets/public seats, senior citizen centres, fences and pavilions. There's also a focus on tidying up town centres (Beresfield, Stockton, Blackbutt, Beaumont Street) and planting and revegetation works (Nobbys breakwall, Lambton Park, King Edward Park, and Arcadia Park). In Lake Macquarie, CityServe will be helping on more than 25 projects across Lake Macquarie City including Charlestown Lions Park, Ulinga Oval at Cardiff South, Wangi Wangi Scout Hall and Swansea Equestrian Centre.
