A songwriter, first and foremost, Amy Shark draws from her own life for her lyrics which are at times confronting, emotional and raw. She has been compared to and is often considered Australia's answer to Taylor Swift (or maybe Taylor is America's answer to Amy!) It's difficult to wrap your head around just how successful Amy Shark is. She currently has over 798 million combined global streams, collaborates with some of the biggest names in music today and has been filling stadiums and arenas around Australia. This month we caught up with Amy ahead of her Newcastle shows. Read more on page 18. If making music is your thing, then get on board with Make Music Day this month and join music-makers in 120 other countries worldwide on a day that celebrates making music in all of its forms. Some of our favourite musicians and artists are joining the campaign to encourage all Australians to participate in this global day of musical assembly. Read more on page 22. With this issue of intouch Magazine, we celebrate our seven-year anniversary, having published 77 issues and over 4000 pages of quality local content. And as intouch is still 100% locally owned and produced, we don't just talk about being local; we are local. We live it every day. Each month intouch offers readers something a little different, working with the community and showcasing local people, visiting celebrities, businesses and events with a dynamic blend of imagery and inspirational articles. intouch is the go-to source of lifestyle content for not just the communities of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley, but visitors too. And with the incredible support of our very loyal readership, we have every intention of staying that way. Enjoy!

Newcastle-born Kailani Craine found her love for skating after attending a Hunter Ice Skating Stadium birthday party. “I was eight years old when I went along to a birthday party at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium, and I liked it so much that I kept going. One thing led to another. From attending a birthday party, I have now skated in two Olympics. It’s amazing how one small decision to go skating has led to this,” says Kailani. Kailani has represented Australia in the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympic figure skating competitions and has recently begun coaching at the Warners Bay rink around her training schedule, giving aspiring Olympians the chance to learn from the best. Hunter Ice Skating Stadium offers birthday party rooms and open skating sessions for all ages to grow their skating dreams with birthday party packages that are guaranteed to make your child’s birthday the coolest
place to be in Newcastle. And without the stress, mess, and cleaning-up! With four dedicated party rooms that can be booked for 8+ children to attend, prices include skate hire, decorations, food, drinks, and an ice cream birthday cake – all starting from $34pp. Parties can be booked to take place during the public ice-skating sessions on Friday afternoons and evenings and Saturdays and Sundays. Even if you’re not having a birthday party, public skating sessions will allow you and your family to hone your skating skills. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday sessions are ideal for families and skaters of all ages, and skating frames are available to help beginners get comfortable on the ice. If you don’t own skates, there are skates available to hire for all public skate sessions so you can get along and practice! The Best of the Mid-Coast Descends On Wingham WORDS DI VON ESSEN The town of Wingham on the NSW Mid Coast will once again welcome visitors from across the state and, indeed, Australia, from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October with the welcome return of the Wingham Music Festival and a stellar line-up worthy of any grand music festival in Australia. Confirmed artists include The Black Sorrows, Darryl Braithwaite and The Waifs, headlining Friday, Saturday and Sunday
nights, respectively. Other artists include Bill Chambers, The Wolfe Brothers, Dom Turner, Imogen Clarke, 19-Twenty, and many more. "After a two-year break, we were determined to reshape and refresh the Festival, and this line-up truly is a dream come true for us," said Festival Coordinator Donna Ballard. Since its inception in 2007, the Festival has grown to become a much loved annual event in the community calendar. This year the Festival will return to its place of origin at Central Park, a location that allows visitors to immerse in the
town centre with cafes, boutiques and heritagelisted buildings surrounding the Festival site. Festival attendees are invited to bring their own chairs to the expansive marquee and relax in front of the main stage to listen to more than 30 acts featuring over 100 musicians over three brilliant days of music. Alternatively, throw a rug under the bright flag sails, sip on drinks from local featured distillers, and absorb the vibe of the music and surroundings. Alongside the plethora of live music, the Festival also features artisans showcasing handmade wares and artworks. Workshops will be held across the weekend, and visitors can enjoy the best in food and delicacies from local businesses in the Mid Coast NSW region. "The Festival atmosphere will be brought to life with stilt walkers, circus performers, belly dancers, and you can participate in yoga, tai chi and indigenous storytelling, while children can play in the "Kids Zone," said Donna. The 2022 Wingham Music Festival is held with thanks to the Department of Regional NSW and Regional Events Acceleration Fund, part of the $2 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to support growing regional centres, activate local economies and improve services and community infrastructure for regional communities. AMY SHARK HAS BEEN FILLING STADIUMS AND ARENAS AROUND AUSTRALIA ON HER CRY FOREVER ARENA TOUR. The multi-platinum, multi-awarded singer-songwriter who hails from the Gold Coast is riding a wave of global superstardom but still likes to get up close and personal with her fans. Hot on the heels of her Arena Tour, Amy decided to tour regional Australia on her See U Somewhere Australia Tour with 60 dates from May to August and including two dates at Newcastle's Civic Theatre – 1 and 2 July. It's hard to wrap your head around just how successful Amy Shark is. She currently has over 798 million combined global streams. She collaborates with some of the biggest names in music today, having co-written Love Songs Ain't For Us with Ed Sheeran, recording it with Keith Urban and then teaming up with Blink 182's Travis Barker on C'mon, just for starters. She burst onto the global music scene in 2016 with her 6 x Platinum single Adore, which quickly established her as one of Australia's most formidable emerging songwriters. This was followed by APRA award-winning (Song Of The Year) 6 x Platinum and number one Australian airplay chart hit, I Said Hi, and the 2019 3 x Platinum single Mess Her Up. Her debut/ breakthrough #1 ARIA album and Platinumcertified Love Monster was recognised in 2018 with four ARIA awards (Album of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release, Best Producer [Dann Hume]) and was nominated for another five. Love Monster became the highest-selling album by an Australian artist for 2018. Not one to slow down, even in a global pandemic, 2020 saw Amy release her ARIA award-winning, 2 x Platinum accredited single,
Everybody Rise, which is nearing 37 million streams globally and spent 12 weeks in the top 10 Australian airplay chart. Amy's latest album, Cry Forever, was her second #1 ARIA debut holding the top spot for two weeks consecutively. With the world reopening after the pandemic, many were surprised when Amy decided to stay in Australia and tour so extensively to country and regional towns. "I just see it as a really good opportunity," said Amy. "I don't see many other artists doing it, and I have very fond memories of travelling around when I was younger through places like Uluru, Alice Springs and the Simpson Desert. I had to convince my team to do it, and I've probably annoyed my European management, but I want to see my own country before heading back overseas," said Amy. "And don't forget, I spent a good 15 years of my life playing music to almost nobody, so I feel at home in smaller venues." Amy is referring to the fact that despite the perception that she had a meteoric rise to fame, she actually spent 15 years of hard graft, playing
IT'S FUN FINDING LITTLE TOWNS WHEN I TRAVEL. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. I LOVE GETTING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. covers in pubs, learning her craft and being knocked back time and again by the music industry before finally catching her big break. That came when her partner and manager, Shane Billings, applied for and was awarded the Gold Coast City Council's Regional Arts Development Fund, which enabled her to work with the Grammy-winning, LA-based producer M-Phazes, who is also coincidentally from the Gold Coast. Adore was released in 2016 and sparked a global bidding war to sign her. A songwriter, first and foremost, Amy draws from her own life for her lyrics which are at times confronting, emotional and raw. She has been compared to and is often considered Australia's answer to Taylor Swift. "I think most artists would be proud to be compared with Taylor," said Amy. Continued next page ▶ 19

(Continued) "She is inspirational to so many. Lots of people didn't believe that she wrote her own songs, and I totally get her frustration around that because the same thing happened to me. People think I only sound good because of my producer or whatever, but as young women, we've got so much to write about, and if you do it every day like I do, you get really good at it. I'm honoured to be compared to Taylor. "I'm a songwriter first. That's how everything started. I didn't even play gigs at first – I never thought I could. I locked myself in my bedroom, played my guitar, and got really good at songwriting. But you have to learn to play famous songs and covers like Tracey Chapman, Crowded House and Cold Chisel ‘cos that's what the audience in the pubs are looking for. I didn't realise it at the time, but I really needed to do that – it was excellent training." Amy's songwriting skills were boosted when she got to work with Ed Sheeran on Love Songs Ain't For Us for her latest album. Introduced to him by her celebrity friend Russell Crowe, Amy was a little starry-eyed when she met up with him to co-write together. It was the first time she had ever co-written any song, and she has 20
talked about how much she learned through the process. Sheeran told her not to "overcook" her songs – to pare them back and to let them breathe. Amy used this concept on the Cry Forever album, and the hiatus that COVID forced upon her gave her time to make sure each song was the best it could be before it was released. Love Songs Ain't For Us, performed with Keith Urban, recently won the 2022 APRA Award for Most Performed Country Work. "I can't believe I won in the country music category," said Amy. "It's usually when I go get a drink or go to the bathroom, but this year they told me I couldn't ‘cos I was in the category! I didn't even have a speech prepared. It was lots of fun." And when asked what it was like to work with country music legend Keith Urban, Amy talks about his surprising humour and wit. "Keith is the biggest gentleman and so funny and witty. I first met him at the 2018 ARIAS, and I was so nervous, but he made me feel so relaxed. People don't realise how funny he is. He kept telling me jokes in my ears that no one else could hear. He's an absolute legend and everything you want him to be." Amy was the first Australian artist to be crowned as the Apple Up Next Artist and, as such, covered billboards in the US and
performed on black shiny floors for Jimmy Fallon, James Corden and Colbert, touring the US multiple times and winning fans all over and across the country. But for now, the US and Europe are being forced to wait while Australia's regional and suburban towns soak up everything this extraordinary young woman has to offer. It won't be the first time that Amy has visited Newcastle, which enjoys a special place in her heart. "The first time I visited Newcastle, I was so excited because it was the home of Silverchair," said Amy, who is a big fan. Amy covered the Silverchair hit Miss You Love on Triple J's Like a Version in 2016, the year that Adore came out and when she got her big break, to widespread critical acclaim. "They're one of the only bands I know that when you think of them, you immediately think of their hometown. There's not many other bands or musicians that you do that with. And I remember being so shocked at just how beautiful the beaches were in Newcastle – I was blown away. I'll be there for two nights, so I'm hoping to get to the beach!" On tour for much of this year, Amy likes being on the move and finds that it helps with her songwriting. "I'll be touring for a while, but I'm always songwriting. It's still a fun pastime for me. It's not work. I'll also be doing my television debut
I CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO NEWCASTLE. AFTER 60 SHOWS, I DON'T KNOW WHEN I'LL GET BACK – SO IF YOU WANT TO SEE ME IN CONCERT – NOW IS THE TIME!
on Celebrity Apprentice. I'll wait for the backlash on that one!" Amy is indeed appearing in the sixth season of Channel Nine's Celebrity Apprentice and was recently seen filming at Manly Beach, as reported by The Daily Mail. Fellow musician and singer Samantha Jade is also appearing in the show. After so many years of trying to make it in the music industry and constantly being rejected, followed by an incredible surge in popularity and global success, does the singersongwriter feel like she's arrived – that all her dreams have come true? "Yes, I've definitely arrived. COVID gave me time to shift my mindset," said Amy. "We've moved back to our house on the Gold Coast now that travel has opened up again. I've always dreamed of having a really nice house, and now we've got one. Nothing can bother me now. My family is all good. I just want everything to stay the same now. I guess if I have any other dreams, I wouldn't mind winning a Grammy! My dream is to maintain this and keep writing good songs. And not to be swallowed up by the darkness of the music industry."
Amy Shark clearly has a strong work ethic. It's a constant thread throughout everything written about her. There are no shortcuts. She is not an instant success and has worked hard for what she's attained with practice, resilience and passion for what she does. Her advice to young people who are just starting out is based on this kind of authenticity. "My advice for anyone just starting out is to be sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Money, fame, celebrity – all that stuff just falls flat, and it's not really what it's all about. You need to have a really honest conversation with yourself. Be honest and work hard. People can smell fakes." When Amy's See U Somewhere Australia Tour was announced, it was already an epic 42-dates that sold out half the tour within the first 24 hours. It's since expanded to 60 dates due to popular demand and the addition of extra shows. Humbled by her fans' response and thirst for tickets after just the first day, Amy was over the moon. "Wow, I cannot believe you've already sold out 19 shows! Thanks for welcoming me into your towns with this insane response! I can't wait to come and play for you all."
Amy has promised to perform all her hits from both albums, Love Monster and Cry Forever and is genuinely excited to be performing live in her own country again – particularly after COVID. She suspects that it will be the last time for quite a while that she will have the opportunity to perform in Australia, with US and European fans impatiently waiting for their turn to see her perform live. Young women everywhere want to be Amy Shark – and you can't blame them. She is a genuinely lovely person, down to earth, warm and funny. She's built her career the hard way, based on talent, resilience and hard work. She's open about her issues, and the hard times she's been through, writing about them all, sharing her pain and opening herself up to scrutiny so that others can know that they are not alone in the emotions they feel and the experiences they live through. She's inspirational and writes wonderful songs that will be around for a long time to come. Don't miss her in concert at the Civic Theatre in July – one suspects that it may be the last time you will ever get a chance to see her perform in such a small venue. After that, it'll be arenas all the way from here on in. Tickets to all shows are on sale from www.amyshark.com 21

The Australian Music Association has announced that Australia will once again take part in Make Music Day on Tuesday, 21 June 2022, joining 120 other countries worldwide on a day that celebrates making music. And some of our favourite musicians and artists are joining the campaign to get us all to express ourselves musically. Kate Ceberano, Katie Noonan, Lee Kernaghan, Megan Washington, Catherine Alcorn, Jack Howard, Andy Baylor, Sarah Carroll, Lloyd Spiegel, Barry Conrad, Ruva and Bob Spencer are all Make Music Day Ambassadors, encouraging all Australians to take part in this global day of musical assembly. Make Music Day was first launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique. It is now held on the same day in more than 1000 cities across 120 countries. In 2022 Make Music Day celebrates its 40th Anniversary and its fifth year in Australia. Different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part it’s a DIY Music Festival!
“We’re excited to give musicians of all levels the opportunity to create their own stage on Make Music Day. Making music we know is good for the mind, body and spirit, and we look forward to musicians everywhere performing in their communities and online on 21 June 2022,” said Co-ordinator of Make Music Day Australia, Rob Walker. “By establishing one specific day each year to celebrate music, Make Music Day encourages amateur and professional musicmaking and empowers individuals to seek ways to celebrate music in their community.” Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — can organise their own gig or join the many organisations that will host events to share their music with friends, neighbours, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public and can be held online or face to face at locations across cities and towns. Anyone wishing to participate can simply organise a performance and register it at makemusicaustralia.org.au.

Horo Scope ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.
STAR OF THE MONTH GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Happy news, Gemini. It seems that some antiquated rules and regulations vanish almost like magic, just to make your life just a bit easier. Throughout this year, help comes from seemingly mysterious directions. Synchronicities are heightened. As reinvention also comes more naturally, expect profound changes in your thoughts, actions and appearance. What's been hidden may come to light. Things that should normally never have been possible, or even made sense, are likely to occur now. There can be a sense of fate to these events or encounters. It's a year to live large and enjoy.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Just when you're anticipating drama from one direction, it comes from another. Many important conversations take place this month. The outcome depends on your reaction but think twice before laying the blame on others. Later in June, a need to restructure your life releases passions you thought had passed you by. Apparently, not so. You delight in treading the same path as in your younger days. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST Saturn has kept you under a tight rein for some time. Stuck in a holding pattern, some Leos have felt trapped or controlled. Others have been confronted with sober realities. Saturn, however, always has a plan. This drill sergeant taught you better ways to deal with adversity and you've emerged a mental, emotional and spiritual hero. Armed with your own new set of rules, you're transforming into an unbeatable force. 24
VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER It seems that very few are willing to reveal their true feelings or intentions this month - least of all, what they want from you. Be warned in advance - the most taboo subjects in any relationship or business are sure to be those linked with money. Declare a closed-wallet policy. That should at least keep financial predators at bay. After the 15th, thoughts become more logical, and projects get the attention they deserve. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Jupiter settles in your love and relationship sector this month - with Cupid aiming his intoxicating arrows your way. Set your sights on specific targets if there is any desire or heart you'd love to capture. With so many potential admirers, you needn't work hard. A time of wine and roses, perhaps? At work, too, new ideas and projects dominate your mind. For many, this means a step up the career ladder. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Scorpios are smitten with the unusual, and they delight in being unique. Therein lies the rub - for if you value your distinctive character, you should respect everyone else's. The question of responsibility versus freedom may crop up. But mistake commitment for chains, and you could find yourself permanently footloose and fancy-free. If that's what you want, fine. Otherwise, try a more conciliatory approach. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER With Jupiter settling in your house of decadence, your appetite expands this month - in love, money, food, and everything in between. You want more of everything, and there's precious little reason why you can't have it. You're motivated to find new ideas, cross new frontiers and taste new pleasures. If skills are lacking, you gain them; if a vital link is missing, it will be found. Romance appears equally fortuitous.
AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY With Jupiter in your communication sector for the next year, new studies are easier to learn, and money is easier to earn. Still, nothing negates the appalling emotional turmoil you've recently suffered. Good news: the worst is over. You now live life on your own terms, but you need to unload burdensome memories - many aren't worth their weight. In the meantime, sultry Venus conjures up passion. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH Your energy continues to power up in June. Get a move on Pisces but, this time, in a new direction. You should also direct all this extra enthusiasm into specific goals. If you're in the market for a new car or property - it's a great time to buy. Just make sure you research everything thoroughly - read all the small print. Expand your horizons, too. This month, you're on the winning side of this game called "life". ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL Jupiter, the planet of joy and luck, steps into your own sign and stays for the year. This delightful cosmic influence cheers you on romantically, financially and spiritually. Jupiter expands whatever it touches, so go big when the situation arises. Soon, there could also be something very special to celebrate. One warning: expansion can also mean excess. Keep your diet and spending under control. TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY When the Sun steps forward in your money sector after the 22nd, you soar ahead. The cosmos is finally launching you in the right direction, and single-minded Taureans realise intent and determination are what it takes to make it to the top. Developments involving money, property or business could move beyond anything you'd imagined. The best news? The welcome break at the end of the month. You deserve it.
TANYA OBREZA was born
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY A lively skirmish between power planets brings even more confusion to those already in a quandary. Mars is energetic, but Pluto is practical and solid. So you have one enthusiastic force encouraging you to go for it, while its opposite number counsels restraint. All you can do is adapt to situations as you find them. Upside: whether single or coupled, the cosmos encourages romance.

The vodka boasts a full flavour with a long, smooth finish. But that's not all you'll find in their tasting rooms at Hunter Valley Gardens. Small Mouth Vodka has been online for years, but since the tasting room in Pokolbin

In addition, we add edible glitter to our products so you can shimmer on the inside just like you do on the outside!" says Jaydan. Jaydan adds that both he and the team have been surprised by the range of customers that walk through the doors, with everyone from fresh-faced 18 year-olds to 92-year-old connoisseurs lining up to take a taste! "For us, this is evidence that we are on the right track. We aim to create a premium and innovative product that can be used to make even simple cocktails unique and delicious. We're dedicated to providing a product that excites all ages," said Jaydan. Small Mouth offers gins, vodkas and liqueurs ranging from 45%, 40% and 20%. On Tour With the Kid CHLOE O'SULLIVAN
THE LONG,LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY On 28 February, Lismore flood levels peaked at 14.4 metres, more than two metres higher than the previous record of 12.27 metres in 1954. This kind of flooding was well above the town's 10-metre-high levee wall. The wall was built in 2005, and in early 2000 there was a program set up for residents to raise their low lying houses to a height of 12.5 metres - out of the danger zone based on previous floods. With all these measures taken, this new flooding still devastated the town. Four people died, with 2,000 homes destroyed or unlivable out of the city's 19,000 homes. Lismore and Northern Rivers residents came together, as they always do. More than three hundred people, now affectionally known as the Tinny Army, saved more than 4,000 people from the raging water even as they watched their own homes go under. The vision on the nightly news of our fellow Australians carrying children and animals through chest-deep water to safety was heart-wrenching. But as this small but resilient town struggled to recover from the first flood, nature once again took its toll on 29 March and another life was lost. The news moves on as it has to. The job of the news, by nature, is to provide you with new information. Despite a challenging few years of its own, the music industry is always one of the first to do what it can to help. When I received a 32
• FAMILY & COMMUNITY
call saying that Michael Chugg and Mark Pope were working with the Lismore Council to put on a free show for the residents of Lismore, and did I want to help, the answer was always going to be a yes. In less than five weeks, a sensational team of music industry artists and crew came together and pulled off the impossible. A world-class show for thousands of people in a venue that less than 12 weeks before had been underwater. The One from the Heart concert was a great success and a welcome distraction from the day to day of recovery. But arriving in Lismore to do press for the show, I was shocked at the devastation. Three months on, less than 10% of businesses are open, and those which can run are doing so with the help of generators because, in many places, there is still no electricity. Some still have no water. Even the businesses that are open cannot trade at full capacity because kitchens have been destroyed, and the estimated time to get repairs is currently nine months. People are still living with friends or relatives. Others have returned to destroyed homes, doing what they can on their own with no access to trades, to pull down mouldy walls and make do with what they have left. We found out that the most valuable commodity in town at
the moment is cardboard because, with nothing else, people are using it to insulate their walls as winter approaches. Despite this, the attitude of every local we spoke to was, "we'll be right". There are so many stories that prove that this town is full of strong and resilient people. But they still need help – and a lot of it. Of course, leadership is everything in a time of crisis, and in that regard, Lismore has hit the jackpot. Local Business owner Steve Krieg was elected Mayor in December 2021. New to the job, he watched as the town went under, including his home and his business. I observed Steve as he walked through the streets and spoke to the locals. They love him because they understand that he is one of them. Every day he talks to different levels of government, reminding them that Lismore still needs help and trying to overcome the obstacles in the way of getting this town back on its feet. I have to admit to shedding a tear as I heard him tell someone his wife is a hero to him because she is the one keeping things together for their family while Steve does the job he needs to do to put the pieces back together for every other family in Lismore. It's a task he is taking personally. If you can, please donate to the LISMORE FLOOD APPEAL. Visit www.lismore.nsw.gov.au

Why is Food Catching Between My Teeth? (Part 1)
intouch contributor
DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
I carry a toothpick with me because I have areas that consistently trap food, and I like to clear these immediately. Sometimes, there are causes around food impaction that may be modified to reduce or, on some occasions, eliminate the food impaction. One of the areas that can consistently trap food is the space between the last and the second last tooth in the top jaw. If food impacts
The short answer is that it does! And counter to what many people believe, it happens whether you have fillings or don’t have fillings in your teeth. Obviously, it would be somewhat unrealistic to expect that teeth were maintenance-free.
this site regularly, the pressure from the food impaction can orthodontically move the last tooth backwards – opening the space between the two last teeth and further exacerbating the impaction. Frequently, I warn people that simply creating a “tight contact point” between the last and second last teeth is not enough: the last tooth does not have a tooth behind it – so it can drift backwards under the influence of the bite or food impaction. I have experienced episodes where we have “chased” this tooth backwards by remodelling the contact point repeatedly. This is undesirable, and the alternative may be to actually glue the two teeth together to stop the food impaction. When there is a solid connection between teeth – no food will get caught between the teeth. However, the issue of home care now arises. The treatment of such a problem is frequently best resolved by doing a filling on both teeth that binds the teeth together with a “tunnel” that runs between the teeth at gum level allowing the flow of saliva and the use of interdental brushes to keep the area clean. Sure it is not ideal. However, the inflammation in the gum between the teeth frequently resolves itself by virtue of no food impaction and easy, effective cleaning, which patients are more likely to stick with.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
2
Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)
3
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

TAFE NSW Newcastle will play a critical role in training the next generation of local fitness instructors as the Hunter emerges from its COVID-19 hangover, according to the nation’s peak health and exercise industry association. The reopening of the local fitness industry is triggering a surge in demand for fitness instructors and personal trainers to help motivate and train locals to achieve their fitness goals. “There were a lot of people that left the industry over the past two years but when I speak to our members, they tell me the last three months have broken all records when it comes to new gym memberships,” said the CEO of the Australian fitness industry’s peak body AUSactive, Barry Elvish.
“Demand for fitness instructors is growing rapidly, and as a result gyms are struggling to get qualified staff. We see TAFE NSW as an important part in getting quality graduates coming through.” TAFE NSW Newcastle Head Teacher of Fitness Karyn Gardner said TAFE NSW offered students the practical skills, work experience and industry connections to make a running start to their career. The Certificate III in Fitness (Gym Instructor) is a six-month course, including units in planning group exercise sessions, developing gym-based exercise programs for individual clients, and providing healthy eating information. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY? RICHMOND VALE RAIL TRAIL ONE STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING A REALITY Another milestone toward the Richmond Vale Rail Trail (RVRT) becoming a reality has been achieved with a Review of Environmental Factors now on public exhibition. The proposed trail is a 32km cycling and walking track along the former Richmond Vale railway between Kurri Kurri and Hexham/ Shortland. This regionally significant trail traverses the three Local Government Areas of Newcastle (14.9km), Lake Macquarie (2.7km) and Cessnock, with 14.4km of the trail located in the Cessnock LGA. The trail has been divided into two sections to seek relevant development approvals: Shortland to Tarro and Pambalong (Newcastle LGA) and Stockrington to Kurri Kurri (Lake Macquarie and Cessnock LGAs). The Stockrington to Kurri Kurri Section of the rail trail is the focus of this Review, and the portion of the trail now on public exhibition. Cessnock City Council Mayor Jay Suvaal said the Review would take us one step closer to this fantastic project becoming a reality. "The trial aims to support future growth in the Lower Hunter region, provide a safe alternative for active transport between

communities, and provide better recreational access to the local natural environment. Once complete, the RVRT will provide safe cycling and walking experiences between Kurri Kurri and Newcastle for locals and visitors alike to enjoy," Cr Suvaal said. The RVRT REF is open for feedback until 5pm on Sunday, 3 July 2022. For more information and to have your say, visit www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au/ RichmondValeRailTrailREF TRAMPOLINE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE SPRINGS TO LIFE Lake Macquarie is set to become the home of elite trampolining in Australia, with the NSW Government approving a $12.5 million grant to help build a new Trampoline Centre of Excellence at Glendale. The state-of-the-art facility will complement the $25.7 million expansion of the Hunter Sports Centre, co-funded by Council and Federal Government, making it one of the country's premier multi-sport training venues.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the announcement was a windfall for the city and for the region. "The new Trampoline Centre of Excellence will be up there with the world's best venues for the sport. It will mean we can not only attract and train Australia's best up-and-coming athletes right here in Lake Mac, but we can host national and international trampolining competitions," she said. A 1500sqm arena with nine trampolines, two tumbling strips, two double mini-trampolines, a foam pit, warm-up areas and seating for 450 spectators are among its features. It will also cater to other aerial sports training and career pathways, including skateboarding and skiing. Go to lakemac.com.au for more information about the Hunter Sports Centre expansion. SHARE YOUR IDEAS FOR WARATAH LOCAL CENTRE UPGRADE City of Newcastle has begun community consultation with local residents and business owners to understand their views on how to improve safety, parking and public spaces in the Waratah Local Centre area. Following input from the community, a public domain plan will be developed to guide the revitalisation of the area surrounding Station Street in Waratah. Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz said the future upgrade aims to create a more accessible, attractive and safe local centre for the Waratah community. "Our public domain plan will upgrade the streetscape, improve access to shops, and address traffic and safety in the area. Our upgrades often include new footpaths, trees and street furniture – so it's important that the community shares their feedback about what they would like to see," said Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz. New Government… New Developments in Housing in the Hunter
WORDS DI VON ESSEN We heard all the pre-election promises when it came to housing – it seemed like every day there was a different announcement aimed at first-time homeowners, retirees or investors. But now the dust has settled, and we have a new Government in place – what will it mean for our housing market?
The Labor Government's Help To Buy scheme aims to provide an equity contribution of up to 40 per cent for eligible low to middleincome homebuyers, with only a two per cent deposit saving required. But low-income borrowers may still struggle to qualify for finance under the housing affordability scheme,
according to one of the nation's most awarded mortgage brokers ‒ 2021 Australian Mortgage Awards Independent Broker of the Year and Zippy Financial Director and Principal Broker Louisa Sanghera. "Existing schemes that only require a two per cent deposit have proven mostly unsuccessful for prospective lower-income homeowners. While the Help To Buy scheme is commendable, borrowers attempting to tap into existing policies that reportedly only require a two per cent deposit, such as the Family Home Guarantee for single parents, have still not been able to secure finance in our experience because of their lower incomes," Ms Sanghera said. "In my experience, saving a two per cent deposit won't be enough for most low- to middle-income borrowers to secure finance, especially when their mortgage might still be $650,000 after the government's equity stake, depending on their location." Ms Sanghera said borrowers wanting to apply for the Help To Buy program should try to save more funds to put towards their deposits as well as reduce credit card limits and debts to improve their chances of qualifying for a mortgage. NIC OLA MCDOUGALL
(Continued) According to Nicola McDougall, chair of the not-for-profit Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA), the incoming Labor Government must now prioritise the current rental property crisis. "The supply of rental properties is at record lows around the nation, with the situation set to worsen due to softer market conditions and rising interest rates," Ms McDougall said. "Investors have been mostly missing from the property market since well before the last Federal Election, predominantly due to nationwide investment lending restrictions and the political posturing on negative gearing during the last election campaign." "With markets cooling and interest rates rising, it is likely that investors will retreat from the market once more, which will further exacerbate the financial pain that tenants are experiencing." Ms McDougall said longer-term investors might be concerned about what lies ahead for them, given the incoming government's historically negative view of investors. "Rather than viewing investors as 'greedy' or an endless source of funds for government coffers, perhaps it's time to recognise that they also provide rental housing for millions of Australians?" she said. "Indeed, it an uncomfortable truth for some that the present rental crisis is predominantly a result of investor inactivity over recent years, which is hardly a sign of 'greed' when markets have been booming like never before."
