EDITORS... As we go to print this month (on V-Day), a couple of events have not just caught our attention locally but have also put Australia front and centre on the global media stage. And not always for the right reasons. I was mortified to hear an Aussie audience boo-ing Australian Open President Jayne Hrdlicka when she mentioned the vaccine rollout during her speech at the post-final presentation. It was a message of hope that was clearly lost on the local crowd but not on international fans, who called the reaction ‘disgraceful.’ And I can’t say I blame them. It was frankly embarrassing and, dare I say it, un-Australian. Referencing the Vaccine rollout was meant to be a message of hope. What right do we have to disparage ‘hope’ when we have been so lucky here in Australia? The vaccine is not obligatory – if you disagree with it, then simply don’t take it. Your doses will be gratefully accepted by those who appreciate the effort of scientists and governments around the globe to save lives. No-one is out there protesting against those who don’t want to take it, so why protest against those that do? We all have to make a choice – there is no right or wrong – just choice. Which I think is something to be celebrated, not cause conflict. In other news, Facebook's move to ban all Australian news content from its platform seemed to take conflict to a whole new level. Of course, there’s plenty of places to gain reputable news (Facebook never was one of them), and maybe it’s given us all the kick we needed to look broader and take a more proactive part in our news consumption. Visit www.intouchmagazine.com.au and subscribe today! (and yes, it’s free and always will be) This month we feature Newcastle Fringe Festival, which was also inadvertently caught up in the Facebook ban. We hope our feature will encourage you to get out and enjoy over a hundred events in eleven venues that these not-for-profit warriors have worked so hard to bring to us. It's bigger, better and more fabulous than ever – and we don’t need Facebook to tell us that it's well worth supporting. Enjoy! Postscript: These opinions are the Editors own and may not reflect those of the rest of the team, or indeed you – our readers. If you feel you need to complain about this, please post it on our Facebook page where we’re sure {not} to see it.

At the top of the bill in April is a fun night out – a show described simply as “Terrific” by The Australian. Margaret Fulton the Musical brims with love and energy like chicken soup for the soul. Genuinely heartwarming, with a slew of catchy tunes, this musical production will have your toes tapping along. Suitable for all ages, it’s our pick for a family night out. Throw down some delicious pre-theatre pizzas from Civic Digest (the café at the Theatre) to keep those hunger pains at bay – this is a show about food and cooking, after all! May takes a turn into the satirical with The Gospel According to Paul. Jonathan Biggins makes a welcomed return to Newcastle after a sold-out season in 2019. Back by popular demand, Biggins once again transforms into Paul Keating – a visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser. Full of intelligence and wit, it's a funny, insightful and occasionally poignant portrait of Keating. Hot off the satire heels, yet keeping with the political theme, is the most shocking and wickedly funny, Animal Farm. Produced by Brisbane-based company Shake & Stir, Animal Farm is a bold work that holds more accolades than there’s room to list. George Orwell’s intensely powerful novel – adapted for the live stage – allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Who’s ready to ‘pig in’ to avoid the disappointment of missing this theatrical event of the year?
Musicals and theatre hits are just a sample of what’s in store for 2021. The Civic Theatre’s annual Season is like a tasting plate of live performance. Fourteen shows have been carefully curated for the annual program, each bringing unique experiences through sharing stories, people and places. If you’ve been missing those special evenings out seeing live shows, Civic Theatre offers a discount for any three (or more) Season shows that are booked as a package. Beyond a great night out with friends or family, package benefits include ticket savings, free parking, discounted food and beverage, flexible ticket options and dibs on the best seats in the majestic auditorium. Gone are the days of needing to hit the highway to experience outstanding performances. Season 2021 brings big events from Sydney Dance Company, Opera Australia, and both Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals. Let Civic Theatre bring the drama to you this year! Packages are now on sale through the Civic Theatre Ticket Office or website.

Wicked CIVIC THEATRE NEWCASTLE Now It will be a truly wicked March for many Newcastle Grammar School students as they bring to stage the region’s first school production of the hit Broadway musical Wicked, running 10–13 March. Wicked is a prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz tale that is already familiar to most people. Based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, it tells the story of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (who later becomes Glinda the Good Witch). The pair are unlikely friends in the Land of Oz in the time before Dorothy arrives. First staged in 2003, it has become one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals. >THE WOMAN IN BLACK The stage adaptation of Susan Hill's novel The Woman In Black has been playing continuously in London’s West End for 30 years – and Metropolitan Players are thrilled to be presenting the Newcastle premier! Arthur Kipps, a haunted man, hired a young actor to help tell his story to his family and friends of his short time at Eel Marsh House on England’s bleak East Coast. This tale treads in the footsteps of the classic ghost story, following the tradition of Charles Dickens and Henry James. It relies on atmosphere, a vivid sense of place, hints and suggestions, bringing a sense that these events could happen to anyone. See it at The Playhouse, March 18–27. www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au

With a tweak to the name (and a COVID friendly format), the first annual Hunter Valley Gin & Jazz Festival comes with the promise of botanicals, cocktails and a whole lot of fun! A great day out for groups of friends, ladies who lunch, and lovers of Gin and Jazz to come along to the Hunter Valley’s biggest beer (or should we say Gin) garden. If you're here for the music, the line up includes John Morrison’s Swing City Band featuring Jacki Cooper, The Aston Martinis and The Djangologists. A Busking Competition is now open for expressions of interest (if you’re a budding-busker, are self-powered or acoustic, and want a piece of the action, send your contact details, a bit about your music style and set up requirements to event1@hopeestate.com.au). “SINCE COVID, THERE HASN’T BEEN MUCH IN THE WAY OF LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, AND WE FEEL PRIVILEGED TO BE ABLE TO PUT THIS INCREDIBLE FESTIVAL TOGETHER”
Af ford abl e FUN FOR EVERYONE! WORDS LIANE MORRIS
EVERY MARCH SINCE 2016 THERE HAS BEEN A LITTLE FESTIVAL IN NEWCASTLE THAT HAS BEEN GROWING BIGGER AND BIGGER EACH YEAR. THAT FESTIVAL IS THE NEWCASTLE FRINGE AND THIS YEAR; IT’S SCHEDULED TO RUN FROM 17 TO 21 MARCH WITH A WEEK OF STREAMING ON-DEMAND FOLLOWING ON FROM THE LIVE FESTIVAL (#BINGENEWYFRINGE). WITH OVER ONE HUNDRED EVENTS IN ELEVEN DIFFERENT VENUES AND AN AVERAGE TICKET PRICE OF $20, THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. WHAT IS FRINGE? A fringe festival is a series of performances that can cover all genres of performance art and is generally open access. This means that the selection of performances is not curated and is usually open to any artist that applies. Think – no censorship. The most famous fringe festival in the world is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which has been running since 1947. There is now a global fringe movement with 261 fringes listed in cities all around the world. In Australia, Adelaide Fringe is the largest in the country and now the second-largest fringe festival in the world.
Fringe festivals are known for being edgy, unique and diverse – very different to mainstream entertainment. They provide an opportunity for emerging artists to gain valuable experience in live performance, arts marketing, promotion and administration. Many celebrities today had their beginnings in the fringe movement. A successful fringe is a sign of a healthy arts culture. WHO IS NEWCASTLE FRINGE? Newcastle Fringe Festival was founded in 2016 by local writer, director, actor and pianist Phil Aughey after his time performing at the Edinburgh Fringe. In late 2019 he incorporated and established a volunteer board that all brought different skill sets to the table. The Newcastle Fringe Festival Inc. team all volunteer their time and energy to create the festival, and it’s a massive job. “It’s exciting when you see it all come together. This year has been amazing. Clearly, there is a hunger to perform, and we’re all stoked that we have so many wonderfully talented artists in our program. There’s incredible diversity, and it’s wonderful to know that we are creating something that wouldn’t exist without the work we’re doing. The venues are excited too. Since COVID, there hasn’t been much in the way of live entertainment, and we feel privileged to be able to put this incredible festival together,” said Erin Cullen, board member and Operations Director of Newcastle Fringe. NEWCASTLE FRINGE & COVID Last year, before COVID hit, the festival was shaping up to be the biggest yet with ticket sales 250% up on the previous year, but two days before the launch, COVID restrictions came into place, and the festival had to be cancelled. It was one of the first arts events affected. Some artists had travelled internationally to perform, and the disappointment was intense. This year, every effort has been made to ensure that the festival is as COVID proof as it can be. For this reason, more venues have been added to the pool and vetted with COVID safety in mind. Venues include Carrington
Bowling Club, The Creative Art Space, The Royal Exchange, The Base, The Grand Hotel, The Gallipoli Club, Lizottes, Adamstown Uniting Church, The Dungeon, The Station and Event Cinemas Kotara. In most instances, unless sold out in advance, tickets will be available at the door, but with restricted numbers, booking is advised. 2020 was a difficult year for artists and venues. The festival is important to everyone – the artists, the venues and the audience, as it provides five days of employment, customers and enjoyment. People are hungry to get out again, and Newcastle Fringe provides a low cost and safe option to do so. Artists are local to NSW, and without the ability to travel nationally or internationally, they need the opportunity and the work. (#supportarts)

LIZOTTE'S FRINGE DOUBLE-BILLS – THURS 18 TO SAT 20 MARCH. TIX $59–$79 (LIZOTTES)
Another first for Newcastle Fringe is the partnership with Lizottes and the presentation of double-bills. As most shows are only one hour long, the double-bills negate the need to move from venue to venue. It also opens up the Lizottes traditional audience to the Newcastle Fringe. “Wine Mums: Live. Laugh. Love” and “Unplanned Melodies Cabaret” Thursday from 7.30pm, includes MC Maynard. “Wine Mums: Live. Laugh. Love.” is cheaper than therapy and much funnier. Empty nesters Jan and Marie have too much time on their hands – they’re here to help you with your love, sex or relationship problems. This clever and funny show will have you in stitches. “Unplanned Melodies Cabaret” is a hilarious musical improv troupe that has enjoyed sold-out shows at the Australian Improv Festival. The audience's suggestions are

used to create an entirely original musical – melodic, lyrical, silly and raucous. “OMG. WTF” and “The Bang Bang Bandit Variety Show” Friday from 7.30pm, includes MC Maynard. This is burlesque night! “OMG. WTF” is an awkwardly arousing heady mix of burlesque, circus, drag, sideshow and magic. It’s a platform for various artists to display art that might not be seen in your average cabaret show. Expect the unexpected. “The Bang Bang Bandit Variety Show” is heading to the Lizottes Saloon to treat audiences to a mix of burlesque, comedy, circus, drag, vaudeville and song. Yeeha! This is the hottest show in the wild-west. “The Music of Petty & Nicks” and “The Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood Experience” Saturday from 7.30pm. “The Music of Petty & Nicks” is the best of Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty by Bathurst based singer, Sophie Jones and Sydney producer Michael Carpenter with the rhythm section of Charlie Lee and Russell Crawford and covers an incredible range of hits and classics. “The Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood Experience” stars well-known actor Zoe Carides as Nancy and Scott Holmes as Lee, together with The Nancy Boys. It reimagines the Sixties through the eyes of the iconic Nancy and Lee and includes a string of hits such as “These Boots Are Made for Walking.”
3.
NEWCASTLE FRINGE EMERGING FILMMAKER’S COMPETITION & FESTIVAL – THURS 18 MARCH. EVENT CINEMAS KOTARA, TIX $10–$35
This inaugural international filmmaker’s competition celebrates film as an art form. It showcases heats of the weirdest, quirkiest, fringiest short films and animations in
three heats culminating in the judging and awards. Winners will receive a screenwriting workshop with Serhat Caradee, Director of Australian AACTA Award-nominated film “A Lion Returns,” which will screen at 7pm and be followed by a Q&A session with Serhat and locally born producer, Liz Burton. “A Lion Returns”: Jamal has just returned to Australia after spending 18 months in Syria. No-one knows what he did or who he was with. He’s back in the country and wants to see his terminally ill mother, however, has to deal with his strong-minded older brother Omar, his wife Heidi and their young son, but most importantly his unforgiving father. But why has Jamal really come back? Is he a militant with a cause or an easily led pawn in a bigger global picture? A story about redemption, forgiveness and the consequences of your actions on loved ones. MA15+

YOUTH THEATRE JOPUKA PRODUCTIONS PRESENT:
“Moth” Fri–Sun, 6pm at The Dungeon; “Samson” Fri–Sun, 7.30pm at The Dungeon; and “Gaybies” Fri–Sun, 9pm at The Creative Arts Space. Tix all $20 per person. “Moth” Sebastian is a terminally unpopular fifteen-yearold suburban kid, with an overactive imagination and an obsession with anime and death. His only friend, Claryssa, is an emo Wiccan art-freak barely one rung higher than Sebastian on the social ladder. What starts as just another night drinking down at the cricket nets soon gives way to an ecstatic vision that leaves Sebastian unconscious, their friendship left in ruin. Written by Declan Green and presented as part of Jopuka’s Rocket Fuel Program “Samson” Essie, Beth, Sid and Rabbit are growing up at the arse end of the world. Boredom, decay and violence ►
plague their lives. The accidental death of a friend has torn apart all their assumptions about loyalty, love and life. And when a new kid comes to town with his own secrets and baggage, their fragile equilibrium faces a fresh test. “Samson” fizzes with truth; it is brutal yet gentle, funny yet sad, young yet old. Julia-Rose Lewis’s “Samson” is a big-hearted and darkly beautiful play which offers a window into the world of young Australians today—presented as part of Jopuka’s Rocket Fuel Program. “Gaybies” Hotly political and deeply personal, Dean Bryant’s “Gaybies” is a funny and moving piece of verbatim theatre that tells the story of children who have grown up with gay parents. Drawn straight from interviews with children aged four to forty, these are authentic accounts of family life told with humour, honesty and wisdom. Presented as a semi-staged reading by Jopuka Productions and Directed by Joshua Maxwell with Music by Quinn Carter.

That's the Spirit! Taste the Tubes at Hunter Distillery
SESAME
WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW
LEMON MYRTLE VODKA. TURKISH DELIGHT LIQUEUR. MAGICAL, COLOUR-CHANGING GIN. THESE AREN'T THE KINDS OF SPIRITS YOU'LL FIND AT YOUR TYPICAL BOTTLE SHOP – BUT YOU WILL FIND THEM (AND PLENTY MORE) AT A LITTLE PLACE CALLED HUNTER DISTILLERY. AND IF YOU'RE VISITING THE HUNTER VALLEY FOR A DAY (OR MORE), THEN THIS MIGHT JUST BE THE PERFECT SIDE-EXCURSION TO MAKE YOUR TRIP A MEMORABLE ONE. Hunter Distillery is a dream destination for those who like to branch out with their evening tipple or are keen to try their hand at making interesting cocktails at home. The state-of-the-art distillery is tucked away amidst the wineries along Broke Road in Pokolbin. Since opening to the public in 2012, the Distillery has expanded in size, scope and offering. The original Valli Vodkas paved the way for the premium organic vodka range the Distillery is now renowned for, and various gins, liqueurs and schnapps have been added to the mix. "It's grown dramatically," says Neil Langdon, Hunter Distillery's Sales and Customer Relations Manager. "It’s gone from just the five vodkas to now five gins, about ten vodkas, about 15 liqueurs and schnapps, and some other specialty and aged spirits. We started with just one tasting bar; we’re now up to two very big public tasting bars and two group-booking tasting bars. And we’re still growing.” From the moment you walk in for a $5 tasting experience, you’ll understand the Distillery’s unique appeal. The list of spirits available is extensive and often unusual (did someone say chilli schnapps? Caramel vodka? Choc-mint liqueur?). And when you finally decide what you’d like to try, your samples are offered not in glasses, but test tubes. “It’s a unique thing that we do for a couple of reasons,” says Neil. “It’s a point of difference, but the main reason is that it is straight spirits, so this way, you get to try a couple of flavours, and we stay within RSA guidelines!”
ENCRUSTED TUNA “It's not the only reason the experience is unique,” adds Neil. “The tasting area is in the same building as the production area, so you can actually see the stills and the bottling line and everything from the tasting rooms. Neil explains. Hunter Distillery is also the only 100% organic distillery in the Hunter, and its processes are different from those of many other distilleries. For a real treat, a tasting of aged spirits is a must. The Golden Aged Rum, Aged Gin and Aged Vodka have seen the distillery win a silver medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London in 2017 for the Golden Aged Rum. The Aged Vodka went on to pocket a silver medal, and the Aged Gin scoring a bronze at the 2018 awards. “We make our own spirit,” Neil explains. “A lot of distilleries buy in the spirit and then make their products from that, but we actually make ours from scratch. We do the equivalent of five times distilling, so we’re able to remove many nasty alcohols – there’s basically none of that burn that goes all the way down. It’s a very clean, polished spirit.” Hunter Distillery’s range of boutique products is only available online or at the Distillery itself. But if you find you just can’t get enough, you can also join the Spirit Club and receive a 15% discount on all purchases, including two sixpacks of 500ml bottles delivered in May and November each year. You’ll also have exclusive first access to new products and possibly even special events such as members’ nights down the track… Bottoms up, we say.
Visit www.hunterdistillery.com.au to shop online or nip in for a test-tube tasting at 1686 Broke Road, Pokolbin.
There have been some magnificent Yellow Fin Tuna catches making their way onto the ice in Wickham at the Newcastle Fishermans Cooperative these past few weeks, so we headed to the co-op's website www.fishemanscooperative.com.au to find out the best way to prepare and service this delectable delight. We couldn’t really go past the Sesame Encrusted Tuna – it’s easy and delish. Pop into the co-op and try it out today!
Ingredients
¼ cup Black sesame seeds ½ cup White sesame seeds Four tuna steaks, each 6 oz. and 1 inch thick Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 2 tbsp grapeseed or canola oil
Method
1. In a shallow dish, combine the black and white sesame seeds and stir to mix. 2. Season the tuna with salt and pepper and dredge in the sesame seeds, coating the tuna evenly. 3. In a searing pan over high heat, warm the oil until smoking. Arrange the tuna in the pan (do not overcrowd) and cook until the white sesame seeds start to turn golden underneath, about 1 minute. 4. Turn the tuna and cook until the white sesame seeds start to turn golden underneath, about 1 minute. 5. Transfer the tuna to a cutting board and cut into 1⁄4-inch-thick slices. 6. Arrange the tuna on individual plates, overlapping the slices. Serve immediately. 7. Enjoy immensely (and give thanks to www.delicious.com.au as you do)!

The BIG Picture {Why having an overall scheme is better than buying pieces ad hoc} WORDS LARA O'DONNELL – Tailored HQ
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN AN ITEM IN A STORE, BOUGHT IT, TAKEN IT HOME ONLY TO FIND IT DOESN’T SUIT? AND IF YOU COULDN’T BE BOTHERED TO RETURN IT, DID IT JUST BECOME “STUFF” PUT ON A SHELF OR IN A CUPBOARD WITH NO REAL PURPOSE? When designing a new house, or redesigning an existing one, get a big picture worked out first. Whether it be selecting a colour scheme for the exterior of the home, or a redesign of just one room, having the finished scheme worked out before making a start will guide and simplify the whole process and remove a lot of stress and lastminute decision making.
Any type of visualisation is great. A mockup of a paint scheme or a mood board of furniture and accessories will enable you to determine if everything will work together or not. But if you are the type of person that this does not work for, its time to call an interior designer because this is precisely what we do. We can visualise scale, colour and pattern combinations and might even push you out of your comfort zone a little to achieve an amazing result. Having this overall scheme also gives you a guide when out shopping. You know the direction and the style of pieces you are looking for, the colours, the textures and the reasoning behind the selections. ►
18 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
When on a mission for a piece to improve a space, take a photo of the area before heading out. It’s best to do this from a fair way back so that the overall scene is visible. Use the help of staff in the stores – they are a wealth of knowledge and will often present options you would not have thought of. Also, think about beauty as well as function. We are fortunate at Tailored HQ to have the beautiful brand Ferm Living. If you love Danish design and have not heard
of this brand, look them up. Their products embody the beauty, function and quality ethos we live by. Whilst you may need to buy one piece at a time due to budget, having an overall plan will give you clear direction. We use this philosophy in our design jobs too. We can provide an entire house scheme with a mood board for each room and pricing for every piece from curtains to furniture, right down to accessories, allowing you to know the overall cost of the entire job. This method will enable you to choose which pieces are the most important, save for the others, or just do one complete room at a time until the money tree grows again. For some inspiration or a helping hand, visit our store at 41–45 Hunter St, Newcastle or call us for an appointment on 4047 2330.■

►FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
▼ BRUSH CREEK, LAKE MACQUARIE
The McCloy group legacy started in Belmont in 1961, operating from the family home.
A D V E R T I S I N G F E AT U R E
Thriving, AwardWinning Communities Are McCloy Communities!
WORDS LAHNEE O'BRIEN - McCloy Group If you’re in the market for land for your dream home, chances are you’ve taken a drive through a McCloy Community! The McCloy Group are a Hunter-based property group whose history started in 1961 when Don McCloy started a Belmontbased construction company specialising in commercial buildings, schools and hotels. Don’s son, Jeff, who is now the Chairman of McCloy Group, joined his father in the mid-seventies, taking over the reins in the mid-eighties after ten years working together. In the 1990s, the McCloy Group diversified considerably, reflecting Jeff’s innovative approach and business acumen, today delivering award-winning residential communities across NSW. The Hunter region of NSW is fast becoming a popular lifestyle destination for families. Known for its easy access to local beaches and wineries, it’s an idyllic place to live, work and play. The growing demand has certainly been felt on the land front with 2020 showing a surge in interest, which has continued into 2021. Not to mention with all-time low-interest rates, NSW Government Grants and impressive builders’ incentives, there has never been a better time to build. For McCloy Group, their communities are master-planned for the benefit of the growing area, put simply by Chairman Jeff McCloy “We have a reputation that we complete what we do; that we’re there for the long haul — that’s our philosophy”. Each community aims to set the standard for the local area, their team oversee each element from acquisition to client handover to ensure desired outcomes are achieved, and the results exceed market expectations for future residents. It’s truly the hallmarks of McCloy Communities which set them apart; they place a strong emphasis on creating 20 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
exceptional living environments with vibrant public art and aesthetically serene streetscapes. They build children’s playgrounds, cycleways, plant mature street trees and place a strong emphasis on open spaces. “We don’t just do ‘property development’. Our legacy is transforming underutilised spaces into award-winning communities in which communities thrive, and people love to live.” Continued Mr McCloy.
WHERE TO BUY AT A MCCLOY COMMUNITY The McCloy Group is staging construction of more than 6,200 residential homesites geographically spread in the Hunter, New England and Northern Rivers regions. Here in the Hunter, you’ll find seven active communities spread across Maitland, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens. Each is proving its place in the community with land releases over the past year selling out within days of being on the market. In Lake Macquarie, you’ll find a hidden gem in Brush Creek, a boutique community set off Transfield Avenue Edgeworth which offers the perfect location for those seeking to be nearby both the lake and bushland whilst maintaining quick access to the M1 to Sydney and Newcastle Link Road. Situated on 21 hectares of land, Brush Creek offers homesites for a variety of buyers, for those looking for a low maintenance option to downsize or families chasing space, with options over 1600m2 hitting the market this February! If the appeal of Maitland is for you, then look no further than Heritage Parc, their UDIA awarded community! Heritage Parc is known for its flat easy to build on blocks, generous lot sizes and value for money. Plus, over half of the community has been retained as open space with four active children’s playgrounds, a dog park and an outdoor art gallery all on your
doorstep. But you best be quick Heritage Parc is now selling its final stages. If your heart is set on Maitland, but you need a little more time don’t worry McCloy Group have you covered with the new Hereford Hill at Lochinvar! A brand new community at the gateway to the Lochinvar Urban Release area near fantastic schools and the home of a brand new state-of-theart park and playground facility set to open later this year. Homesites here can be secured with just 5% deposit, nothing more to pay until settlement. In Port Stephen’s you’re spoilt for choice with 3 McCloy Communities active in the region. Their newest community, The Gardens, located on Medowie Road, offers premium flat homesites in a sophisticated and welcoming environment. When complete The Gardens will be true to its name with manicured gardens and mature street trees throughout; plus signature McCloy Group public art donations resonating with the community. First released in July 2020 The Gardens saw a number of hopeful parties camping out from as early as the Monday prior to be the first to secure a homesite, with numbers increasing as the release date approached. The same experience has been felt nearby at The Bower located at Boundary Road Medowie. The Bower is a more established community, first launched in 2016. At the time it too had a surge of demand, and today has seen this spike again. It is home to another state-of-the-art 1-hectare park and playground facility, known as Bower Reserve, which comes complete with half basketball/netball court, toddler’s playground, children’s playground and adult exercise area. Homesites at The Bower really are a unique opportunity, and with a deposit of only 5% required on land, they’re a great option for many homeowners and are often found to be more affordable than purchasing an existing property. But the opportunity to secure land does not stop here, with another McCloy Community at home off Rees James Road, Raymond Terrace. Potter’s Lane conveys affordability with a convenient location just 15 minutes to local employment opportunities, 20 minutes from the Williamstown RAAF base and 25 minutes to Newcastle. This community has grown rapidly since its launch in 2016, with local residents pleased with the progression of the community. But be quick, it too is in its final stages. When considering land for your new home in the Hunter, a tour of the McCloy Communities is a must.

flow within the industry. Historically the Act has not applied to an ‘owner-occupier’ – a person who lives in (or proposes to live in) premises which they own (‘homeowner’) – but from 1 March 2021 this will no longer be the case.
HOMEOWNERS BEWARE: Changes to Security of Payment Regime WORDS JACK LINDGREN - Senior Associate + LAUREN FAULKNER - Lawyer, Jenkins Legal HOMEOWNERS IN NSW ENGAGING A BUILDER TO PERFORM RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK ON THEIR PROPERTY WILL, FROM 1 MARCH 2021, BE SUBJECT TO STRICTER TIMEFRAMES FOR EITHER PAYING OR DISPUTING PROGRESS PAYMENTS CLAIMED BY THEIR BUILDER. THE ACT The Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 1999 (NSW) (‘Act’) is NSW-specific legislation which gives builders who carry out construction work (or those who supply related goods or services) a legal right to recover progress payments. A key aim of the Act is to facilitate cash
ENTITLEMENT TO PAYMENT From 1 March 2021, the Act will operate such that builders who carry out construction work (or those who supply related goods or services) will be able to issue what is known as a ‘payment claim’ on a homeowner. Following receipt of a valid payment claim, the homeowner should consider whether to make payment of the amount claimed in full, or promptly respond by issuing a ‘payment schedule’ which states how much they propose to pay (with the homeowner to actually pay that amount). A payment schedule may propose to pay some of the amount claimed, or none at all – so long as the homeowner provides justification for their position. If a builder disagrees with a homeowner’s payment schedule, they can refer the dispute to an independent adjudicator (‘adjudication application’). RISKS FOR HOMEOWNERS If a homeowner fails to respond to a valid payment claim within the prescribed time (10 business days), the builder will be entitled to recover the amount claimed as a debt through the courts, and the homeowner will not be able to rely upon any other issues arising under the contract (e.g. defective work) in defending such a claim. Similarly, homeowners must respond to an adjudication application in a timely manner. If a homeowner fails to respond to an adjudication application within the prescribed time (5 business days after receiving a copy
of the application), there is a risk that the dispute will be determined solely based on the builder’s application. RISKS FOR BUILDERS Payment disputes involving homeowners are usually resolved in the NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal (‘NCAT’), however, NCAT proceedings are often time-consuming and costly. While the amendments to the Act represent an opportunity for builders (and homeowners) to resolve claims more efficiently, this can only occur when the builder is entitled to and validly makes a payment claim. There are several technical requirements that a builder must satisfy in order to do so (for example, the claim must state it is made under the Act). If a builder fails to comply with those requirements, the benefits provided by the Act will be unavailable to them. FINAL COMMENTS While those in support of the change predict that it will alleviate financial stress for builders, and potentially decrease the occurrence of insolvency within the industry, it may have the opposite effect for homeowners who are unfamiliar with the legislation. Homeowners may require the assistance of a lawyer to deal with payment disputes, including: 1. In determining whether a builder is entitled to make a payment claim; 2. In determining whether a payment claim has been validly made; 3. By drafting a payment schedule (i.e. response) to a payment claim; and/or 4. By writing submissions where an adjudication application has been made.

Can Andy, Terry and Jill master this extreme babysitting challenge? What does mysterious fortune teller Madam Know-ItAll really want? And will the Big Red Button really destroy the world? Ocean Alley has announced new COVIDSafe shows in Newcastle for the summer. March 27 will see the psychedelic-surfrockers at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre, with local supports to be announced. It will be the band’s first headline shows in these cities since 2018, as well as the first-time local audiences can experience Ocean Alley’s ARIA-nominated third album Lonely Diamond in the flesh.

Unposted Letter WORDS CHLOE O'SULLIVAN – On Tour With the Kid I have a confession to make. My name is Chloe, and I'm a hoarder. Now, I know that word evokes visions of a house filled with newspapers piled head high, a year's worth of unopened tuna cans, and cat poop that has been left so long it has formed a small coffee table. Thankfully I'm not at that level. I do however have a three-car garage filled with furniture and keepsakes from several relatives who have passed away over the span of the last 30 years. There were so many boxes that have been moved and repacked over the years, but there seemed to be no real logic

FINDING MATESHIP ON THE KOKODA WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON As an avid ANZAC fan and history buff, the Kokoda Track had always been a possibility for this Bar Beach event and community relations manager. or order to them. So even though they were dusty and may have at first glance appeared to be full of things that could be discarded, each one had to be checked. I was so lucky to find photos of my grandfather and my mum as a child that I had never seen before. Photos of longdead relatives and property that I could identify thanks to careful and extensive note-taking on the back. I even came across a letter to my great Aunt from Banjo Patterson's son Hugh. Thankfully, having listened intently to family stories over the years, I knew why this would be there. One of my blood relatives is mentioned in Clancy of the Overflow, and the family was certain that he had been the inspiration for The Man from Snowy River. Hugh had written to let my Aunt know that his dad had always said that the famous Australian poem had been based on parts of several people, although not one in particular. Still nice to have, given the letter itself was now 80 odd years old. That was also not to be the oldest piece of correspondence I found. In a beautiful red box that I had seen on and off over the years of packing and repacking but never looked closely at the contents I found letters dating
from 1918 to the mid-1930s from my great grandfather to my great grandmother during the times he had been working away from the family home. They span the time they were courting, through being newlyweds and having their children. All perfectly preserved and a fascinating read. My great grandfather writes with a very similar style to me, by which I mean a little sarcastic and in the manner in which you can imagine from the letters how he spoke. Then came the most fascinating find. A typewritten card, which was obviously one of several, explaining to people that the reason they hadn't got their Christmas cards from my great Aunt that year was that she passed away before being able to send them, dated 1967. Then there underneath, was a handful of perfectly preserved, addressed, sealed, and ready to post Christmas Cards. It was like finding a message in a bottle, and I was determined to get them to their final destination. One of my relatives, however, was less sure. "What if she knew it was her last chance to confess that she had been having it off with someone's husband" and my quizzical response was "In a Christmas Card?" It should be noted that most of these cards are addressed to properties or addresses in small country towns. Several of my great Uncles passed on between 20 and 30 years ago, and if a letter arrived at any house in their hometown, I guarantee it would end up with one of our relatives. I understand some of them might be disregarded, but what if someone writes back? Part of me feels like if it’s one of the last things she did, I owe it to her to get them where they were meant to go. Would you post the cards? Feel free to check-in at the On the Tour with the Kid Facebook page and let me know.
New Guinea for a 10-day fundraising trek for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service on the 96-kilometre Kokoda Track. One of the world’s most spectacular and challenging treks, Kokoda encompasses rugged mountain terrain, World War II history and local culture. “Kokoda is the hardest thing I have ever done. I am proud I did it. The trek sent me on a path of thinking that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I just need to start somewhere,” Michelle said. She learnt when feeling overwhelmed, to break it down into one step at a time. Then build this step into one minute, kilometre, hour, day, night, week. Before she knew it, she was at the end of the track and had achieved it. “I reflect back to the trek, a lot and take this analogy with me throughout my life.” For a year, before the trek, Michelle trained hard, to ensure she was physically prepared. She also worked on her mindset, as Michelle was terrified of sustaining an injury that ironically would see her rescued by a helicopter and potentially not make it to the end. On the track, she experienced draining days due to the terrain, humidity, kilometres and being one of only two women in the 30-plus group. Michelle also discovered that when she was being pushed beyond her limits, the people in the group became her saviours. “In these stress environments, we depend on mateship, I know it sounds cliché. As humans, with no family or friends around, we need to depend, reach out and connect to others. In this situation, it organically happens.” On day seven, this hit home for Michelle when she became ill tackling Menari Gap, a vertical climb for more than an hour in the mid-day steaming heat with no rainforest-
canopy shelter. Michelle was sucking down water and reached the top overhydrated, sick and ready to collapse. The group rallied, supplying her with electrolytes, taking her pack and planning to carry it for the rest of the day. “I was overwhelmed and emotional. Feeling guilty as they took on my pack, I was also quite teary and grateful to be hanging out with an awesome bunch of caring people. That “mateship” trait was coming out in all of us – this was a poignant moment for me.” Michelle considers it also to be a highlight. Along with the porters sharing their simple lives, singing and happiness as well as learning about herself, especially the rewards from being vulnerable and engaging with her fear. “Kokoda was a game-changer for me. I learnt to understand the spiritual side of trekking and travelling, in particular, that we are the same – all people, whether a traveller or a local.” Travel had always been on Michelle’s bucket list. However, a new world of travel and experiences came with fundraising treks and becoming a tour leader. Her trips include the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu (Peru), the Camino de Santiago trail (Spain), South Island trek (New Zealand). She also wants to return to Ireland, Peru, Spain and go to Nepal. “I miss travel with purpose and the perspective it gives you. When the borders open, I would love to lead a trek in Ireland.” In the meantime, Michelle is focussing on other fundraising activities like her 10th Divas on the Green for Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, which she started to raise funds for her first trek to China. Last year the event sold out but cancelled due to COVID lockdown. With crossed fingers, Michelle hopes it will go ahead in May.
School Holidays At the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary Spending quality time with the family during Easter and the school holidays is a great Aussie tradition, whether that’s along the coast enjoying miles and miles of golden sands and surf or exploring what inland and country NSW has to offer. It’s great to experience all that nature has to offer together. Caring for our environment has never been more critical, and educating the next generations about ensuring the long-term sustainability of Australia’s unique fauna and flora is vital. The recently opened Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, a $10M education and conservation facility located at One Mile, minutes from Nelson Bay, is a partnership between Port Stephens Council and Port Stephens Koalas making it the perfect location to learn about how sick, injured and orphaned koalas are cared for until they can be released back into the wild. The Sanctuary offers an array of educational experiences that are assured to generate interest in how we can all play a part in the ongoing preservation of this beloved iconic Australian marsupial. Passing through the enormous sliding gate of the Koala Centre, home to the Sanctuary’s Guest Reception and Fat Possum Café & Retail store, you immediately get a sense that you are entering a natural and idyllic bushland setting. Your education and conservation journey begins with the Sanctuary Story Walk, a meandering pathway 250mtr in length that offers an immersive experience for all ages telling the story of the current plight of koala through huge artistic sculptural representations. Along the Sanctuary Story Walk, you are introduced to “Kasey”, an injured Koala who was brought to the Sanctuary for treatment and rehabilitation. Follow Kasey’s journey from when he is first rescued, through to his care by experienced volunteers and recuperation before final release back out into the wild. The Sanctuary Story Walk allows you

At the end of the walk, head left towards the purpose-built $2.5M Koala Hospital, home to 4 Intensive Care Unit Treatment rooms, state-of-the-art Clinic with X-Ray facilities and pharmacy room. You can take a look through the huge hospital viewing window where you may see veterinary staff carry out *examinations and administer treatment to the koala inpatients’. *Subject to clinic times. Leaving the Koala Hospital behind, it’s now time to make your way onto the Newcastle Airport SKYwalk, a 225mtr elevated pathway and viewing platform that offers a unique ‘treetop’ perspective into the koala’s natural habitat. Here you may witness volunteer carers tending to koalas in their ‘gunyas’ who now live out their days here in the Sanctuary due to their injuries prohibiting release back out into the wild. On the SKYwalk, you will enjoy views toward the coastal sand dunes. Being elevated up to 10mtrs into the tree canopy allows you to directly ‘eyeball’ koalas living in their natural environment. Learn about how the koalas came to live in the Sanctuary by reading their stories on interpretive signage conveniently placed around the SKYwalk. For an even more immersive conservation experience, why not stay in a Superior Family Glamping Tent. The Glamping Tent sleeps up to 4 persons, is located within the Sanctuary grounds and offers exclusive ‘in-house guest only’ after hours koala access and encounters. Enjoy a completely unique experience staying overnight in a 4-star Glamping Tent surrounded by natural bushland. ‘Wake up’ with koalas when you join an exclusive morning tour providing tailored information on the care, rehabilitation and survival techniques of koalas in the wild. Your family will leave the Sanctuary with a greater appreciation of how you can assist with the current plight of Australia’s iconic marsupial, ensuring its long term survival for generations to come.
The not-for-profit organisation was founded in 1991 with a mission to support disadvantaged members of the community to achieve their goals. “The first step to overcoming the barriers people face with a disability is to raise awareness for inequality and promote inclusion. Together, we can ensure every member of our community has the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Castle’s Executive Manager of Service Delivery, Karlie Lonergan. Inclusion is a core value at Castle, with the team striving to educate the local community on the benefits of hiring a person with a disability through their Inclusive 100
campaign. Macka’s Sand and Soil have been working with Castle for over 12 years and believe their employment support is integral to their business's success. “They take the time to drive out to Gloucester and meet with our staff to talk about how they’re going. Especially with the drought they were right here helping out,” said Macka’s CEO Robert McKenzie. Castle also specialises in providing NDIS supports, with programs tailored to the unique goals of their participants. Castle’s NDIS program features a variety of flexible, individual and group programs suited for children, young people and adults. These programs provide opportunities for participants to learn daily living skills like how to build relationships, participate in the community and live full and meaningful lives. “My life has changed so much I was quiet and nervous before I came here and now, I perform. Castle is a great place for me,” said NDIS participant Sam Burns. Castle are proud to service the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast regions and look forward to advocating for the inclusion of people with a disability for another 30 years. te s a m a N YOUR BACK PAIN AWAY WORDS GJENAE ROSEKELLY – Planet Fitness IF THE SONG “MY NECK, MY BACK” MAKES YOU IMMEDIATELY THINK OF YOUR DAILY ACHES AND PAINS (INSTEAD OF WHAT THE OLD SCHOOL RNB CLASSIC INTENDED), THEN IT IS PROBABLY TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Time is flying this year, yet so many people are still trying to keep up with last year’s shifts in the working world. Many businesses got shut down and shaken up, so some individuals are still adjusting and returning to working life, with many still working from home. For some, the events of 2020 made some people consider significant life and work changes. Whatever your workspace may look like, the majority of people will experience some form of back pain or discomfort in their life. Whatever the severity, if back pain is common for you, then a way to ease this could be more relaxing than you think. Glenn Horder is a Yoga instructor at Planet Fitness, working with people with differing degrees of scoliosis, and associated pathologies, in conjunction with Physio's and other Health Professionals to identify approaches to manage the impact of their conditions. Glenn remembers the exact moment he realised how his Yoga classes and lessons could help people. “It was when a student came to a class four years ago, with degenerative scoliosis, quite severe, and had been in daily pain for over ten years. I needed to learn everything I could to deliver classes or sequences of movements to alleviate the symptoms and hopefully to generate corrective measures for her,” says Glenn. Glenn was able to refine what he’d learned and use that knowledge to aid the wider community, as it became quite clear that many people were coming to his yoga classes for the benefits it posed for their scoliosis, general back pain from their working life, and many other spinal related problems.
So how can Yoga help with back pain? “Depending on the issue, yoga offers functional movement and gentle release, learning to do things differently, and in some cases Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation (DNS),” says Glenn. DNS is a rehabilitation approach that stimulates the brain and controls human posture and movement, which many yoga positions replicate. Unsurprisingly, your back pain is often related to our mental state and stress levels. We often carry our emotional baggage into the workplace, not realising the psychological effects that could be adding to the physical pain we are feeling. Stress causes tension, and tension creates stiffness, soreness, headaches and directly impacts your mental health. “Don't underestimate the power of the mind. If you focus on back pain, you will feel more pain, however, if you can subtly shift your focus, calm your mind and body, create movement designed to either stabilise, free up or create better alignment, then the body will feel that, and the mind will see it. Both help to evoke the feeling of less pain in the body,” says Glenn. The physical benefits of Yoga to help alleviate back pain are monumental. Yoga increases flexibility, corrects your posture, protects your spine and strengthens your muscles. The Fitness Industry shift to focus more on mental health directly correlates with why you should try a Yoga class. Yoga celebrates the human mind by concentrating on breathing, aiding relaxation, lowering your stress levels without adding any stress on your joints, and just gives you some peaceful time to focus on yourself uninterrupted.
Planet Fitness runs Yoga with Glenn at the Lambton location, but you’ll find other incredibly experienced Yoga instructors who run classes in Belmont and Charlestown. Join online at www.PlanetFitness.com.au and feel at ease with your mind and body today.
I frequently see patients who are seeking an opinion around their dental care needs. This need for a second opinion has often arisen from the recommendations (regarding dental care) provided by another dental practice. Very often – the recommendations are focused on the placement of crowns, bridges and implants. In my opinion, these recommendations of “more involved” treatment modalities are premature. By looking in the patient’s mouth, I often notice broken teeth, inadequate/leaking fillings, scope for improvement of the patient’s bite, that, if delivered correctly, will provide stability, improvements in chewing efficiency and the cosmetic benefits that go hand-in-hand with these functional improvements. I call these fundamentals. Traditionally, fundamentals are considered boring, so let me elaborate. Let’s take the humble filling. Almost invariably, many of the composite resin (white) fillings I see come into my practice lack at least one of the following: • Comprehensive removal of decay (using a dye that demonstrates the presence of decay as a method of quality control); • Engineering of the shape of the tooth to accept the filling, disciplined use of formwork to shape up the filling; • Disciplined application of adhesives including prevention of contamination of the adhesive layers; • Choice of filling materials based on stresses the tooth is to experience and; • Shaping of the filling to create the appearance of a tooth. Yes – these concepts are technical – and boring. But… The application of these multiple, critical concepts are what form the essence of an excellent filling. Furthermore, the dental material manufacturers spend millions upon millions of dollars on developing these dental filling materials. The
Minimal Intervention Dental Care: What’s it About?
{Part 2}
WORDS ALEX HUSZTI - BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on low-biologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
IN PART I OF THIS SERIES, I DISCUSSED THE BASIC PHILOSOPHIES AROUND MINIMAL INTERVENTION DENTAL CARE – SAVING SOUND TOOTH STRUCTURE (I.E. NOT CUTTING AWAY TEETH), REPAIRABILITY AND RESTORATIVE LIFE CYCLES. IN PART II OF THIS SERIES, I’D LIKE TO TOUCH ON HOW MINIMAL INTERVENTION DENTAL CARE IS ESSENTIALLY FOCUSED ON FUNDAMENTALS -AND WHY FUNDAMENTALS ARE THE FOCUS OF LONG-TERM VALUE IN ANY SYSTEM.
correct and disciplined use results in a restoration that looks just like a tooth and works like a tooth. By identifying the critical teeth in a patients’ mouth and applying these fundamentals to restore those teeth, it is almost inevitable that dental stability will arise. Almost inevitable because I haven’t mentioned education. Education provides patients with the ability to understand their requirements in terms of diet, stress, home care, personal strengths and weaknesses. It is not possible to develop fundamentals without education – education is the key to patients’ developing their own stability – an achievement that very often can’t be taken away from the patient once correctly implemented – it has the potential to be permanent. The establishment and maintenance of these fundamentals is at the core of dental health – i.e. dental stability. Once established and understood, it is usually very durable. It is only once stability is established that the dentist sees ‘eye-to-eye’ with the patient around what is lacking in the system. It is essential that the patient’s teeth and dental health is developed to the best it can be, before moving to more advanced treatments. By restoring people’s mouths with direct composite resin fillings, refinements can be made if necessary by simple remodelling of the fillings with either more or less filling material to make changes in functionality, cosmetics, or repair in instances of breakage. Once patients experience this kind of stability, they can see ‘eye-to-eye’ with the dentist. Any choices around more advanced treatments (if necessary) become more elective and simpler since the tone of the outcome has already been set in the fundamentals.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
2
Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)
3
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

A FEW FACTS
• Every year, 17,321 Australians will be newly diagnosed with blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. This is equivalent to 47 people every day or one person every 31 minutes • The Leukaemia Foundation’s latest Blood Cancer in Australia report confirms that in just 15 years, by 2035, this number will more than double to 100 people every day. • Blood cancer is one of the highest causes of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer and melanoma combined. Over 5,600 people in Australia are expected to lose their life to blood cancer or related blood disorders this year alone.
school’s Prefect Secretary, Aidan Bottom, are an impressive young bunch! The current national fundraising record is $52,000 – so they’ve got their work cut out for them. To date, 71 students have signed up for the challenge – all agreeing to either shave, cut or colour their hair for the cause, and they’ve wasted no time getting down to the very important task of raising funds, with $21,100 raised at the time we go to print. Shave Day is March 18 at the Merewether High School Assembly (at 10AM), but before the big day, students have arranged fundraising BBQs at both the school and local Bunnings stores, bake sales, a movie night and some charity sports matches. The organisation of all events is run entirely by the team of school prefects – no mean task for a group of 17-year-olds! Blood cancer is on the rise in Australia. Over the past ten years, the incidence
of blood cancer has increased by approximately 38%, and every day another 47 Australians will be diagnosed. Blood cancer doesn’t discriminate – it can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time – in fact, more than 110,000 Australians currently live with blood cancer or related disorders. By donating to ‘Team-MHS’ as part of the World’s Greatest Shave, you can make sure families facing blood cancer have a place to call home during treatment, someone to turn to in their time of need and access to the best possible care and treatment. You will also help Australia’s best and brightest blood cancer researchers in their quest to deliver rapid advancements in diagnosis, treatment and ultimately a cure. To get behind Team MHS (and we hope you do!), visit www.worldsgreatestshave. com, head to the donate page and search 'Merewether High School'. ■
5 FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW
About Lower Back Pain WORDS TOM RUSSELL – NextGen Physio
WHETHER OCCURRING SUDDENLY OR BUILDING UP GRADUALLY OVER TIME, LOWER BACK PAIN IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON ISSUES SEEN IN OUR PHYSIOTHERAPY PRACTICE. IN FACT, 80% OF AUSTRALIANS WILL EXPERIENCE A LOWER BACK PROBLEM AT SOME STAGE IN THEIR LIFE.
Here are five facts you should know: 1. “Getting old” is often cited as the number one cause for back pain, but the evidence does not support this. 2. Scans (MRIs/X-Rays) are generally not helpful and may induce fearfulness in those with back pain. Only in exceptional cases are scans helpful in actually aiding a patients recovery.
3. Injections and surgery are rarely a cure! 4. Exercise is still king when it comes to managing back pain! This includes general exercise such as walking or swimming and may also include more specialised rehabilitation. 5. A flare-up in your back pain doesn’t mean you have caused structural damage. Sometimes an acute episode of back pain can simply be a muscle spasm as your body attempts to protect its system. I hope this is helpful and provides some basic information about a significant problem for nearly all of us. If you are experiencing lower back pain, whether you have had an acute episode or it’s been causing you a problem for a while. Q
+A With Dr Mark
Williams:
Newcastle City Dental Hi Mark, Can you please introduce yourself, your practice, your qualifications and areas of speciality? There’s a lot in that question! I own and operate Newcastle City Dental in Newcastle, and have been a dentist for 15 years; dentistry was what I wanted to do from a very young age. I grew up in both Sydney and Newcastle – my first degree was in Neuroscience, followed by Dentistry – both completed at Sydney University. Since graduating, I’ve worked in both general and specialist practices throughout Newcastle and Sydney. I returned to the University of Sydney in 2012 to complete a Graduate Diploma of Clinical Dentistry in Children’s Dentistry, whilst working as a Registrar at the Sydney Dental Hospital and the Children’s Hospital Westmead. I’ve held clinical roles as a tutor at the Westmead

Centre for Oral Health in Paediatric Dentistry and as a researcher into Obstructive Sleep Apnoea at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. I continue to attend both local and international courses and conferences to enable me to provide the latest techniques and treatments to each patient. Tell us about Newcastle City Dental – what is your mission, what services do you offer, and where are you located? We pride ourselves on offering patients a warm, family-oriented environment using the most appropriate and sophisticated treatments. When visiting us, you will enjoy superior yet caring and supportive dental care. Our mission is to provide personalised dental treatment for every patient, emphasising comfort and optimal health outcomes. We believe that only once a patient has good oral health, can ideal and long-lasting cosmetic treatment be achieved. We offer a full range of dental services including veneers and crowns, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery and advanced dental services like TMJ and bruxism, snoring, sleep apnoea, sedation and sleep dentistry. Our full range of services can be found on our website – www.newcastlecitydental.com.au. We are located at 1/9 Watt St in the heart of the CBD – opposite the old Newcastle train station and next door to the Great Northern Hotel. It’s a really convenient location with plenty of street parking and easy access to both trams and buses. Tell us a little about the team – who is involved in each area of the practice, what is their role and how long has each person been there? Kathryn Mcguinness is a dental assistant and coordinates and works within the surgery and sterilisation. Kathryn has been here for two years and has over 30 years of experience in general and specialist dental practices. Angela Herbert is our receptionist and dental
assistant. Angela coordinates the reception and also works within the surgery and sterilisation. Angela has been here for a year and has over 25 years of experience in general and specialist dental practices. What motivated you to open your own clinic, and what keeps you turning up every day? What do you like most about dentistry? That’s easy – our patients. We have the most wonderful patients, and our motivation each day is to provide them with the best, most comfortable and accessible dental care possible, for them and their families. Being an independent small business, we are able to run a practice that caters for each individual patient. We can provide custom health and treatments plans without hindrance. I enjoy seeing patients happy and comfortable with their oral health, long term. I enjoy seeing them return and seeing the children, the next generation, grow up with ideal oral health. Do you see any key trends in your industry that you are working towards? Do you have a vision moving forward? Over the last decade, digital dentistry has progressed in leaps and bounds. We blend the latest equipment and technology with other treatments that have been scientifically tried and tested for a long time. Another positive dental trend, that we have been practising since opening, is customising both treatments and preventative regimes to provide optimal lifelong health for each patient. As Australians are living longer than ever, their dentition needs to last longer too. Moving forward, we are excited to grow our practice continuing to update our staff through education and our facilities, to provide the best dental services well into the future.
Recognition for Dedicated Volunteers For close to three years, ARTea’s Gallery and Garden has encouraged the Lake Macquarie community to celebrate its talents, connect, learn and grow. Last month, the social enterprise of Swansea Community Cottage Inc, led by an amazing team of volunteers, was recognised by Lake Macquarie City Council as a finalist in the 2021 Lake Mac Awards. ARTea’s is one of six finalists in the Lake Mac Community Group of the Year category. ARTea’s houses a gallery, garden, gift shop, tearooms and venue space. The gallery and gift shop displays works by local artists and hobbyists (which can also be purchased) and local and pre-loved creations. There are natives, bush tucker, herbs, indoor plants, and fresh vegies for sale in the garden and nursery. The tearooms serve Devonshire Teas and light snacks by donation, and the renovated 1833 chapel is open to the public (unless in use for a community event, workshop or private function.) Swansea Community Cottage project manager Susan MacNeill said this was
an outstanding recognition for all of the volunteers. “There is a group of amazing people that are our backbone. Our volunteers look after the community garden, art space, gift shop, tearooms and serve the most delicious Devonshire teas,” said Ms MacNeill. “About 20 volunteers give their time regularly over the four-day week. They share their skills and time with like-minded people giving back to their community on a regular basis.” ARTea’s Gallery and Garden can be found at 28 Josephson Street, Swansea, and is open from Wednesday to Saturday (10am to 2pm).

Horo Scope Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars this month.
STAR OF THE MONTH PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH So many areas of your life have been left simmering, with your career also in the melting pot. Take heart. This next year encourages physical, mental and spiritual renewal – this time, with you as an active contributor. Many outworn habits and attitudes have to go, including things and people. For some new work unfolds, while others finally enjoy the pleasures of requited love. And when you’re feeling this vibrant, it stands to reason that your sexual magnetism is at its full strength. Embrace life, and it will love you back. Everyone is so happy that you’re back, Pisces.
ARIES MARCH 21 – 20 APRIL Early March may not be your best time. If putting on an act gets you by, fine – but if your dilemma is desperate, tell it like it is. Besides, not everyone is playing fair. Call it manipulation or coercion – a certain someone knows which strings to pull. The upside? It’s your birthday soon, so when Venus offers extra time for play later in the month, slip into party-mode. At the same time, the Sun generously boosts finances. TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY Having survived so much recently, most Taureans are ready to slow down. Unfortunately, the planets deny you this luxury, so stay focused. Thankfully, you can bring the more pragmatic elements of your character into play. And like it or not, for now, you’re cast in the role of cosmic custodian. Others will be looking to you for leadership. But it’s not all hard work. By late March, your libido is allowed more latitude to play. Licentiously, so. GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE A hectic month means you need to concentrate – a huge ask for any restless Gemini. The culprit? Your imagination. There’s a whole world of possibilities out there, and staying tethered to responsibilities could feel like a prison sentence. Behave, and you may get the occasional day release. With passions also running high, March draws you towards illicit liaisons. Just take care that secrets aren’t exposed. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY You have a few issues in limbo, which doesn’t make for a good night’s sleep – especially if money’s involved. There has to be a way of finalising matters, even if it means getting professional advice. But when you’re this strapped for cash, options can look limited. You don’t like turning to family for help, but in pooling resources with others, late March promises both productivity and fun. A happier way to end the month.
38 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST Keep your financial options open until the 10th as you’ll have better alternatives by month’s end. Although you’re clear about what needs to happen, you’re not sure how to do so. Where’s the help going to come from? From your innate Ka. You have so much more inner strength to draw on, Leo. Warrior Mars provides extra courage, and you do the rest. Your fearlessness is legendary. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER You’re in love, or are you? Certainly, there’s an intense fascination there, but it may be based on wishful thinking. You may think you have found your soul mate. Then again, maybe not. That’s not to say that your mutual magnetism isn’t real; just take it slow and allow enough time to see each other with a cooler, more clinical eye – preferably before you buy matching wedding bands. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER As a Libran, you believe in miracles – so you’ll love the amazing events coming your way. Just don’t become complacent. Even though you’re riding a wave of optimism, the currents may be unpredictable, so pay attention to details. Also, be prepared to jettison old baggage for new opportunities. Money shouldn’t be too much of a problem, so you can afford to work and play hard by month’s end. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER –21 NOVEMBER No-one has a completely drama-free existence – we’ve all made mistakes. Consider, though, that these socalled “errors” of judgement are simply learning tools towards wisdom and compassion. Forgive others, and yourself. Forget past hurts and keep moving forward. There is so much more to experience and love. By month’s end, social invitations become easier to accept. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Step cautiously through early March, when your emotions run wild. Perhaps your inner voice isn’t as allknowing as usual. It may, therefore be far more sensible to listen to others. Still, not everything gives cause for concern. The cosmos sets the scene for romantic delights after the 19th, including new playmates. With finances also on side, the occasional luxury is a must. CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY Romance makes its mark in many ways this month. Some fall head over heels. Others reach a watershed. Either way, Capricorn hearts beat with a new intensity. Singles have their flings but also consider commitment. Couples are more willing to offer mutual support. All in all, it’s a month when the planets give you an easier time of it. You can also afford to spend a few dollars just keep your luxuries affordable. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Mars looks set to spark some fiery debates in March. Little can be left to chance, with cash flow being the most contentious issue. You’ll have to think on your feet as each new financial twist unfolds. Love isn’t about to lay its cards on the table either. Look out for devious behaviour. Someone’s got a secret, which could be held against you. Get to the bottom of it, any way you can.
TANYA OBREZA was born in Slovenija and emigrated to Australia with her parents as a young girl. It was during her first visit to England that Tanya was introduced to astrology, and in 1980 she gained her London Faculty of Astrological Studies qualifications. THE FINAL WORD
First Class 20 This month’s FINAL WORD goes to last year’s very talented local HSC Visual Arts Students. Not only did they persevere through a year of on and off classroom attendance and lockdowns, but they also managed to produce pieces of art that were outstanding. So outstanding that they have been selected to appear in the new exhibition at MAC. First Class 20 is open until Sunday 2 May. Go to www.mac.lakemac.com.au for more information.
The COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and environmental issues affecting society are among the dramatic themes explored in a new exhibition by some of the Hunter Region’s top Visual Arts 2020 HSC students. More than 20 schools from the region are represented in this year’s exhibition, with works covering everything from ceramics and sculpture to digital drawing and embroidery. Curator Helen Willis said the 37 works selected chosen for the annual First Class 20 exhibition at the Museum of Art and Culture (MAC) in Lake Macquarie “express students’ awareness of the big issues facing us all”. “The curators don’t begin the selection process with any preconceived themes in mind. But this year’s emerging themes centred understandably around the pandemic year and its associated mental and emotional health issues. These students are commenting on the uncertainty of our lives today,” she said. St Mary’s Catholic College Gateshead 2020 HSC student Liam Nash created striking portraits of himself and his girlfriend, using a collage of hundreds of screenshots, text messages and other digital correspondence sent to and from his girlfriend during the COVID-19 lockdown. “My girlfriend and I met during a three-day leadership retreat in February 2020, and after that, we went back to our
▲ L–R First Class artists Pepita Barton, Madeleine Lock and Liam Nash with Mayor Kay Fraser
respective homes – mine being in Lake Macquarie and hers being up near Taree,” Nash said. “So initially, due to our distance, we communicated via texts, photo messaging, video calls and phone calls, and our relationship developed almost entirely in a digital world.” St Francis Xavier’s College 2020 HSC student Grace Bosworth spent more than 120 hours creating her oil-on-canvas work, Unveiled, influenced by the Black Lives Matter movement. “As I was designing my work, the media was exposing police brutality towards different races in America. I wanted to bring in the idea that we need to have more of an open mind, and there needs to be new growth in society around racism,” she said. For Merewether High School student Pepita Barton, much of the COVID-19 lockdown was spent painstakingly carving out a giant, multi-layered paper sculpture titled Delicate Deadly – her interpretation of a coronavirus. “The concept behind my artwork is the juxtaposition of this idea between delicate and deadly. I’m fascinated by the idea that this living organism has the power to change everything that we live in, in the world today,” Barton said. Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said the exhibition reflected the depth of creative young talent across the Hunter Region. “Seeing these works makes you realise not just what is important to young people today, but what their creative potential is,” Cr Fraser said. “We must support, nurture and celebrate this as they continue through life beyond the HSC.” Martina Mrongovius, Council’s new Arts Producer for the Lake Arts Precinct, congratulated all of the 2020 HSC students featured in this year’s exhibition, remarking that this year marks the 13th instalment of First Class, and it continues to be one of the most popular exhibitions at MAC.
