FROM THE
EDITORS...
There's something in the air this month – and it's not just Autumn! Perhaps it's the return of everything we've missed, like live entertainment and music. Or maybe it's just that we're slowly releasing our bated breath and smelling unfiltered everyday life without a mask! March is Newcastle Fringe Festival month with a smorgasbord of diverse entertainment with something for everyone, including theatre, cabaret, burlesque, circus, music of every genre, a mini choir festival and even an international basketballer for the kids. This is the seventh year of Australia's biggest little Fringe and the first time that it has been extended to eight days across two weekends, featuring more than 130 shows and ten venues. Shows are only one hour long in most instances, and it's a wonderful way to support the diversity and talent of live art performances in our fabulous city. The 2022 program is brimful of talent and variety. There is so much to see, and it's totally affordable, so if you've never been to Fringe, then this is your chance! Read more on page 16. March will be the first full month where restrictions are lifted in NSW, and for the first time in two long years, Australia will welcome back an international festival line-up. As luck would have it, Maitland will play host to the very first of such shows with Under the Southern Stars. Headlining the spectacular rock music concert series will be international acts Cheap Trick, Stone Temple Pilots and BUSH, with supporting acts Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Rose Tattoo and Electric Mary also taking to the stage. Shake off the shackles and get out to Maitland for this one! Read more on page 14. One of the joys about producing (and reading) a truly local magazine is that we get to fill our readers in on all the exciting things that happen around our beautiful region each and every month. Find out about the fabulous pride flag flying in City of Newcastle, the great new entertainment venue in Lake Macquarie or the new Anzac Memorial in Port Stephens, amongst other local news in Around the Chambers on page 34. Enjoy!

Newcastle Emerging Art Prize The Newcastle Emerging Art Prize, with its proud 20-year history, is now known as the Hunter Emerging Art Prize. And it's more than just a new name. The prize broadened its scope in a few different ways with a total prize pool of $11,500. Allowing entries from throughout the Hunter for many years – the offer has now been
widened to include emerging artists living in the local government areas of Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Mid Coast, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Singleton and Upper Hunter. In partnership with long-time collaborators, Octapod, Newcastle Art Space are proud to embrace experimental art with the introduction
of a new prize category for 2021 valued at $1000. A new youth prize has also been added to complement the overall prize. This is a special prize made possible with support from the Squires family in recognition of the late Jody Robinson's outstanding contribution to young artists and art education in the Hunter. Opening night for the 2021 Hunter Emerging Art Prize was postponed last year, so 2022's opening night will be extra special. There will be music, Tibetan food and gelato to be enjoyed on the Styx Riviera while the announcement of winners is eagerly anticipated. Everyone will then have the opportunity to go into the gallery to see the works installed. There were over 200 applications for this year's prize, which was the highest number ever received. The judges compiled the finalist's list at the end of February and will return to the gallery once all of the artworks have been hung to choose the winners. Additional support has been gratefully appreciated by the organisers, who have welcomed several new sponsors. The exhibition will run until 6 March at Newcastle Art Space. On The Music Scene MEL MURRAY PSM Publicity March will be the first full month where restrictions are lifted in NSW, and Newcastle and the Hunter are kicking things off with a bang. For the first time in two long years, Australia will welcome back an international festival line-up, and as luck would have it, Maitland will play host to the very first of such shows. Under the Southern Stars will launch its national run here in the Hunter thanks to the hard work and persistence of the team at One World Entertainment. Under The Southern Stars has been granted approval for all #UTSS2022 artists and their crew to enter Australia under strict covid guidelines, ensuring the utmost health and safety of all event patrons, staff, vendors and artists and crews. With the nation slowly emerging from the most trying period of our lives, everyone involved is extremely excited to get the show back on the road and deliver one hell of a rock'n'roll
experience for fans everywhere. For fans who have held on through all the rescheduled dates, the news got even better with new artists being added to the original line-up. "To say we're excited to finally be able to announce Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as a new addition and fourth high profile international rock band joining our already stellar line-up is an understatement! UTSS2022 will, without a doubt, rock audiences to the core and give them what they've all craved since March 2020 – a line-up that features the bands and the music they love, with both Australian and International artists up in front of them in the flesh and playing their hits, live…it has been way too long," said promoter Andrew McManus. This is your chance to be a part of history. For tickets, visit www. underthesouthernstars.com.au/ get-tickets
CROWDED HOUSE
Announce New Hunter Valley Show Award-winning icons, Crowded House, have announced the news that fans have waited more than 11 years to hear – they will undertake a national Australian tour in April 2022 when they bring their Dreamers Are Waiting Tour here. The Australian shows follow their New Zealand tour earlier this year, during which they played to packed houses, rapturous audiences and universal critical acclaim, and mark Crowded House's first national tour since 2010
and only their third Australian tour during the last 15 years. Crowded House is a long-standing and much-loved vehicle for the songwriting talents of Neil Finn. Formed in Melbourne in 1985 out the ashes of New Zealand's Split Enz by Neil, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour, their eponymous self-titled debut album on Capitol Records went on to global success with the hits Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong. Those songs and many that followed are still
resonating with audiences today; Don't Dream It's Over, in particular, being one of the most covered songs of the last 30 years. The band's first incarnation lasted from 1985 through 1995, produced four studio albums and enjoyed much success worldwide, becoming particularly beloved for their freewheeling and interactive live shows. This lineup said farewell to the world on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in 1996 with a now-legendary performance in front of 150,000 people. Crowded House unveiled a new lineup earlier this year, featuring founding members Neil Finn and Nick Seymour, along with producer and keyboardist Mitchell Froom, guitarist and singer Liam Finn and drummer Elroy Finn. Dreamers Are Waiting heralds a further chapter in the Crowded House story. A new generation has grown up and connected with their songs and will now get to experience the band live as they perform legendary anthems from the band's 35-year career, along with fresh new music. Catch Crowded House with Courtney Barnett and The Waifs at A Day on The Green Bimbadgen, Hunter Valley, on 24 April 2022. For more information and tickets, visit www.adayonthegreen.com.au

NEWCASTLE FRINGE FESTIVAL
Let's Get This Party Started! WORDS Liane Morris
WITH PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS ON VENUE CAPACITIES EASING IN NSW, NEWCASTLE FRINGE FESTIVAL IS SET TO DELIVER MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT TO MORE PEOPLE THAN EVER BEFORE. March is Newcastle Fringe Festival month with a smorgasbord of diverse entertainment with something for everyone, including theatre, cabaret, burlesque, circus, music of every genre, a mini choir festival and even an international basketballer for the kids. This is the seventh year of Australia's biggest little Fringe and the first time that it has been extended to eight days across two weekends, featuring more than 130 shows in 10 venues across Newcastle, Hamilton and New Lambton. 16
WHAT IS A FRINGE FESTIVAL? A fringe festival, by definition, is performance art that's on the fringes. Historically speaking, fringe festivals were an unofficial offshoot of another more mainstream arts festival. Over time, this definition has changed to mean a festival of art that is experimental, new and emerging, most often open access and uncensored. A fringe festival is where the artist takes the risk and the majority of the ticket sales. Mainstream festivals pay artists for their work and take the door sales for the organisers. At Fringe, the more people who attend, the more the artist receives. NEWCASTLE FRINGE – THE ORGANISATION The organisers of the Newcastle Fringe Festival are a group of dedicated volunteers whose mission is to support emerging arts, particularly local artists and live performance. The festival is designed to enable artists to earn money from their art form and provide them with a platform to experiment and create new work. This results in an engaging, quirky festival where anything and everything can and does happen!
WCB – SIGIL
"Our artists are emerging and experimental. Some are professionals, and others aren't, so the fun in Fringe is going along to see what happens," said Newcastle Fringe Chairperson Brooke Twyford. "Lots of celebrities, particularly in comedy, have had their beginnings in fringe festivals, and there are some real gems to be discovered. "It's also super affordable – we deliberately keep ticket prices low to encourage more people to join in the fun." Financial sustainability is always a challenge, and this year was exacerbated by the COVID situation. Sponsors were understandably gun-shy of financially supporting events-based organisations because they are vulnerable to COVID restrictions and cancellations. The festival is supported this year by primary sponsors Port Waratah Coal Services and AGL with additional financial support from Costin Roe, a local engineering consultancy firm. The festival was successful in receiving a Create NSW grant to assist with venue costs, and media partnerships include intouch Magazine,
Newcastle Live, Newywithkids and Southern Cross Austereo local brands, Hit 106.9 and Triple M. This year's venues include the new Newcastle Comedy Club, fringe central The Rogue Scholar, the long-time fringe favourite The Royal Exchange, the Hive, the CAS, the Wesley Uniting Church and The Gallipoli Legion Club in Hamilton, fringe newbies Babylon and The Croatian Wickham Sports Club and Lizottes in New Lambton. "We encourage everyone to give it a go," said Brooke. "Shows are only one hour long in most instances, and it's a wonderful way to support the diversity and talent of live arts performance in our fabulous city. We're very proud of our program this year – it is brimful of talent and variety. There is so much to see, and it's totally affordable. Let's get this party started, Newcastle!"
WHAT CAN YOU SEE AT NEWCASTLE FRINGE? FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC Every year is different at Newcastle Fringe. Some years there are lots of circus or cabaret, and other years it's full of theatre. In 2022 we're spoilt for choice with a massive line-up of musical acts from internationally celebrated artists to local duos and experimental soundscapes. Do you know who the youngest Australian to ever perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, USA, was? At the age of 17, our very own homegrown Newcastle gal and country talent Catherine Britt of course! You can catch her at Lizotte's with Colin Lillie. Britt is an international superstar, and she's showcasing her latest album, Home Truths, along with a whole swag of her biggest hits. If it's a fancy lunch and a performance with a culinary theme you're after, don't miss the host of Double J's Tower of Song and frontman of the band Wagons – Henry Wagons, also playing for one performance only at Lizottes. The charismatic performer, raconteur, TV host and radio personality is synonymous with Melbourne's culture of good music, good food and good times and is accompanied by special guest Lachlan Bryan on piano (of Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes). If country music is not your thing, don't despair. Release your inner gypsy with Zlatko's Balkan Cabaret or listen to the recorder played as you've never heard it before with Alana Blackburn's ReGrowth. For toe-

tapping amazingness, you can't go past the Australian Ukelele Orchestra playing Handel to Fleetwood Mac or the retro and eargasmic sounds of the Kahibah Brass Kills the Radio Star. Local musical acts are too many to list here but include Georgina Winchester in Piano From Gresford with an undulating original piano composition and multi-disciplinary performance, the rich melodies of Johnny Bakerlite & The Subterraneans, the sheer nerdy brilliance and humour of Nerds & Music Do the Fringe and the eerie melodies of Mitchell Elliott in Kurosawa Daydream. For a more international flavour, don't miss acclaimed sassy British singer Li Laurent, known for her powerful vocals and unique writing style, which have been regularly featured on radio, TV and festival stages in England, America and Sweden. COMEDY IS KING (& QUEEN) AT FRINGE Comedy is a big drawcard at fringe festivals worldwide, and Newcastle is no exception. A great many comics got their start at fringe festivals. This year Newcastle Fringe is welcoming three of the best comedians in the country, with over 100 years combined
experience, Darren Sanders, Tommy Dean and Peter Berner, on stage together for one night only at Lizottes. Other big names include Marty Bright in Jokin'n Spoken, who has performed at The Comedy Store in LA, Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals and the Adelaide and Sydney Fringes. Also appearing is The Happy Pom with British comedian Christian Elderfield, as seen on Just For Laughs at the Sydney Opera House Channel 10, Britain's Got Talent and who has won multiple comedy awards. Comedy is not just for the men, though, and there is some exceptional female talent this year, including local Eddy Rockefeller in Wisdom Teeth, who is returning from last year's sold-out run at Newcastle Fringe 2021. Robyn Reynolds (UK) in Mermaid presents a hilarious 'fish out of water' show previously nominated in Best Comedy at Sydney Fringe in 2019, and Vanessa 'Larry' Mitchell, who is taking a break from her literary project, 50 First Dates, will hit us with Teardrops on my Dildo, all about parenting, dating and all things female. Speaking of dating, don't miss the onewoman show Tinder Cindy, a funny dancingstorytelling bundle of dating reality with a definite Greek flavour. 17
clothing, rules, and manners are out the door. Other shows in this genre include Bad Girls Club, BlackStarr Cabaret & Burlesque and Doll Haus Cabaret and Burlesque.
SIAN BRIGID – WILD SIDE IMAGE: JOSHUA HOGAN, DOUBLE DENIM STUDIO
NEWCASTLE LIKES IT NAUGHTY Fringe is one of the best places to see emerging burlesque, cabaret and circus shows, and many local artists are developing their art form in this category, which is one of the most popular genres. Newcastle likes it just a little bit naughty, as local artist, producer and performer Hannah Indigo can attest to, with the success of her sell-out show OMGWTF. Hannah appeared in the very first Newcastle Fringe in 2016 and is now selling out shows everywhere with her dynamite, late-night romp of burlesque, circus, drag, sideshow and magic that lights up the stage with delightfully 18
devilish displays of debauchery the likes of which you'll never be able to unsee. For those that like this style of show, OMGWTF is doing a doubleheader with Candyland at Babylon, and tickets are selling very fast. Candyland is billed as a tasty swirl of naughty circus cabaret fun in a world with a little bit of sugar, spice, and all things nice… and maybe a touch of sour to tickle your taste buds! Both shows can be seen separately as well. In addition to OMGWTF, Hannah Indigo has also produced a new show called Wild Side which features the finest burlesque, circus and sideshow to a rock and roll soundtrack -
ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE No fringe festival would ever feel complete without a solid offering of theatre. Newcastle is very well represented by a large number of local theatre companies and theatre producers, so we're fortunate to have some extremely talented locals to grace our stages. Louise Chapman, regional finalist of the World Monologue Games, premieres her new show, The Lou Chapman Show. In a celebration of local and international playwrights and directors, Lou brings to the stage new original works by Newcastle's Vanessa Bates and Larissa Jarman, from Dusseldorf Germany, Fiona Leonard, Byron's Ana Louisa Davis, and from Florida, United States, Sinda Nichols. Another local and last year's Newcastle Fringe award-winner for Best Premier Show with Camino Man, Steve Wilson, presents Don't Touch Me! A Tale of Cats and Hugs is another solo performance about a single, middle-aged man navigating the perils of housesitting and relationships. And what would theatre be without Shakespeare? When Shakespeare Met Shakespeare pits four Shakespeare conspiracies against one another in a hapless but hilarious bid to find the truth. If it's theatre of the experimental kind you're after, try Belly of the Beast presented by Vexel Creations – a cross-disciplinary study of personal responsibility and social justice through movement and sound. Artists Monique Humphreys and Mitchell Elliott push the boundaries of their respective mediums to portray a woman's battle for sanity within a corrupted reality. Other experimental theatre pieces include Psychotic Sideshow with a mix of circus, Sweet Fleshed, Loose Skinned & Highly Perfumed with a dash of dance and WCB – Sigil – Artistic Merit nominee from Newcastle Fringe 2021. FINALLY, WE CAN SING! In pure celebration of the fact that we can finally sing and that choirs have had to be virtual for the past two years, Newcastle Fringe took the risk to put the call out to choirs to create a mini choir festival. The call was answered, and some of Australia's finest choirs will be performing at the festival. There won't be a dry eye in the house as the rafters are lifted with the glorious, spine-tingling sound of many voices raised in song together at last.

Follow the links on the website under Support Us • Follow Newcastle Fringe on Facebook and Instagram @newcastlefringe THE SPOOKY MEN'S CHORALE
Fast on the way to being a sell-out already, The Spooky Men's Chorale is a vast, rumbling, steam-powered and black-clad behemoth of a choir, seemingly accidentally capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment – or so says the blurb. Also appearing is the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir, whose performers are united by a love of singing together and striving for performance excellence. A powerful symbol of diversity, inclusion and harmony, the choir has maintained a vital and visible presence in the history of Sydney's LGBTQI community. Local choirs also answered the call with both the Newcastle Chamber Choir and The Song Sisters performing. PERFORMANCE FOR A CAUSE Two of this year's shows are donating proceeds of their sales to causes close to their hearts. The Whole "She" Bang showcases the best established and emerging women comedians in NSW. Join Robyn Reynolds, Eddy Rockefeller, Maddie Southall, Laura Coleman and Sarah Gaul for an amazing night of femme forward comedy. 50% of all profits will be donated to Jenny's Place, a non-profit organisation helping women in crisis.
With carefully crafted lyrics and a rich, powerful bass voice accompanied by acoustic guitar, Luke Robinson & Friends – Songs of Country & Conscience delivers rousing anthems and contemplative ballads that range from our First Peoples to refugees, fracking and climate change balanced with comical reflections on Australian life. Profits will be donated to the From The Heart campaign for an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament that is enshrined in the Constitution.
LUKE ROBINSON - SONGS OF COUNTRY & CONSCIENCE
ONE FOR THE KIDS Many of the shows presented are all-ages, but there's only one created especially for kids, and it deserves a special mention. Basketball Man Can Fly is part circus, part basketball freestyling, and it will appeal to kids of all ages. For years Basketball Man has been a worldrenowned Basketball Freestyler, but now he's out to prove he's a real superhero. Witness the best basketball tricks you've never seen as Basketball Man spins, dribbles, juggles, and performs stunts in this crime-fighting, familyfriendly circus show. Printed programs are distributed in cafes around the city or study the program and purchase tickets and merchandise on the website at www.newcastlefringe.com.au 19
HoroScope ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.
STAR OF THE MONTH PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH At last, Pisces! Here's a year that holds the promise of success. So when unexpected offers come in, you'll be keen to take advantage. Your optimism and determination also make a powerful package, and any new study will give you the substance to follow through. By July, prosperity surrounds your home and family - care of a timely bonus or good fortune. The sale or purchase of property could also help to increase wealth. Meanwhile, love interests also flourish. Singles are offered more choice - couples become more intimate. Make room in your diary for a trip for two.
ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL March sends a tremble through your sector of secrets, hinting at hidden romance. Should the affair go public, it's good news for some disastrous for others. Singles have a better time of it. But whether single or settled, this month finds you in the mood to spend. At work, you attract influential company. A temptation to mix business with pleasure, perhaps? It's your call.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Gather your talents and prepare for career commitments, Gemini. Whether it's a new job or starting a business, you're capable of handling anything. Just remember to enjoy the moment. March carries considerable energy, so there's also time for play. Make the most of invitations, but for couples - a partner must offer you independence. As for finances: work harder to spend harder. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Sometimes the best form of defence is attack. Even so, you could be opting for overkill this month. Sure, be assertive if others are out to undermine you, but what they're saying can't all be wrong. Compromise is the key. Solitude, meditation, reflection: these are the things that would benefit you most. Your talents haven't been forgotten - plans for your moment of glory are underway. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST While half of the zodiac might be ready to selfdestruct, that doesn't mean you have to join the queue. Most problems arise through no one's willingness to back off, so it's up to you to lead by example. It's just a case of powering into top gear and crashing through any self-doubts. Meanwhile, a very friendly Venus is networking on your behalf - so make the most of new introductions. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER Logic and instinct have had their differences lately, but they finally reach a truce, resulting in peace of mind. Many Virgos find themselves in an emotional state of grace, bordering on spiritual ascendancy. Friends and family could have something special in store for you, so trust them. But as old habits die hard, trusting someone else's plans may take getting used to. Succumb and enjoy.
SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Often, life's chaos distracts us. We're forever planning for the future, forgetting that in order to manifest what we want - we must live in the present. Of course, it's worry that usually clouds our judgement. March reminds you not to fret. Mostly, you have all you need, and you're moving in the right direction. Everything will fall into place soon enough as past struggles are replaced by growing optimism and fun. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Feeling confident? Great, because you now finally get to call the shots. No matter what mayhem the cosmos creates for the rest of us this month, most Sagittarians should have fun, achieve an important ambition or rise over any opposition. But not without some effort. Although auspicious planets surround you in March, you can't expect everything to fall into your lap. If you want something, go after it. CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY March promises increased cash flow, although the cosmos is keen to squander money on your behalf - but if the budgets tally, then spend up guilt-free. If single, there's a sense of adventure in the air. For dissatisfied couples, it's more of a make-or-break time. At work, retraining or networking allows you to rediscover your true potential. It's all a matter of making the right contacts and then choosing the right direction. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Professional interests are replaced by a glow of sensual satisfaction, with playful passions restoring morale. If coupled, and emotional barriers have grown too high, now is the time to dismantle them. Be honest with those you love, especially after the 20th, when a fateful meeting could prove tempting. Singles also throw caution to the wind. Clandestine affairs, however, could leave you exposed.
TANYA OBREZA was born
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY So many areas of your life have been left simmering, with your career also in the melting pot. Take heart. March encourages physical, mental and spiritual renewal - this time, with you as an active contributor. Many outworn habits and attitudes have to go. And when feeling this vibrant, it stands to reason that your sexual magnetism is at its full strength. Embrace life, and it will love you back. 20
LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Many people believe the more you do, the more you get to do. Over the next year, the cosmos rewards many of your previous efforts. You'll be super busy, but should the unexpected happen - don't fight it. You've been waiting for something big to happen and, finally, Jupiter creates new business opportunities. Planetary influence also steps up the social pace. What follows could be lasting love or friendship.
in Slovenija and emigrated to Australia with her parents as a young girl. It was during her first visit to England that Tanya was introduced to astrology, and in 1980 she gained her London Faculty of Astrological Studies qualifications. Over the years, Tanya has established an extensive and wide-ranging international following, mostly due to her reassuring, down to earth presence.

Keeping Your Teeth for Life
intouch contributor
DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
Every medical/dental intervention carries three different costs: 1. An emotional cost associated with undergoing a procedure; 2. A financial cost associated with the procedure; and lastly – the cost that is most often overlooked… 3. The biological cost of the procedure. Most interventions involve some loss of your tissues – a loss that is irreplaceable. Therefore the biological cost of dental care has the
One of the most common concerns of patients is, “How do I keep my teeth into old age…(and avoid dentures)?” This has been critical in the development of my restorative dental care. The best way I can help you keep your teeth for life is: Avoid cutting away your teeth unnecessarily! It is simple – but it requires a significant change in mindset.
potential to carry the highest price you will pay. Secondly – people often ask, “how long will this restoration last?” Good question. But a more pertinent question may be, “how much tooth are you cutting away, and is the restoration repairable?” Some restorations, such as conventional ceramic crowns, carry a high biologic cost (i.e. a lot of sound tooth is cut away needlessly) as well as being difficult to repair. They may last somewhat longer – BUT – when they fail, the tooth is at risk of being lost. We’re living longer than ever before, in an age where everything is becoming throw-away. It is time that we instituted more repairability – dental care is an excellent candidate for this kind of thinking. Lastly – a little strategy goes a very long way. If you want to keep your teeth for life – you need a strategy to deliver teeth for life. A fundamental strategy is to start all treatment with the simplest, lowest biologic cost interventions and persevere with the least aggressive strategy for as many restorative cycles as possible. Only move on to a more aggressive approach once you have exhausted simple ones. Implementing these strategies for restorative cycles can ensure there is almost always tooth structure left for delivery of restorative care – often eliminating the need for dentures and expensive implants.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
2
Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)
3
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

• HEALTH & WELLBEING
DAY ONE COVID had swept through my child's school the week before, but we had missed it. I finally thought my lackadaisical approach to housekeeping and the fact that we are hearty country folk who rarely get sick was finally paying off in our favour. I was heading out to visit a friend with a month-old baby, so I decided to take a test just for my own peace of mind. Sure that it would be negative, I made plans in my head for the weekend. I started to pack my bags. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the second dreaded red line. Sure that it was wrong, I took another one. I was like some woman in a rom-com taking a second pregnancy test, hoping for a different result. It's the same pee, Katherine Heigl. What did you think was going to change. It was positive. DAY TWO I made all the calls I needed to make and bragged to friends that had I not taken the test, I wouldn't even know I had it. I filled myself full of medication, vitamins and water. Though the kid remained negative, she isolated with me and avoided close contact. We are a very tactile family and not being able to hug her was heartbreaking. As was not being able to see my
grandmother. We are luckier than most that we can see her from the back deck of our house so we could at least still wave. DAY THREE My overconfidence was short-lived. The muscle pain, the headache, and the fever kicked in. At 5am, unable to get my temperature down, I laid in an ice bath and, for the first time, had serious concerns about what would happen if things went downhill. The rest of the day alternated between a cold bath and a warm bed. DAY FOUR My only real memory of the day is friends checking in on the phone and finding out the Queen has Covid. The only thing Liz and I will ever have in common, I thought. I was positive she looked more regal than I did, stumbling back and forth to the bathroom. For all the access they have to health professionals, she is still a tiny 95-year-old woman. How scary that must be for her family. I hear people dismiss the fatalities all the time as people who are older or with underlying conditions, but they are still someone's loved one.
DAYS FIVE & SIX Please see days 3 and 4 with more tissues. Thinking to myself, what a waste of time all those people hoarding toilet paper had been. Wondering since I had all this time to lay here and think if I could solve all the world's problems. That's been the only thing stopping me until now, obviously, and world peace depended on my input. Unfortunately, delusion from the fever had well and truly kicked in. DAY SEVEN Testing negative and technically about to go out in the world again. For someone in the music industry, having missed the first weekend where NSW was not the town from Footloose was particularly painful. I can't say I feel 100% but thankful that I did everything in my power to ensure I kept other people safe by staying home. I feel like one of the lucky ones. I got sick with access to healthcare, with people checking in on me, with a roof over my head. Some of the world's problems are fixable. But it's not time to think that is the solution. It’s time for action.

Turning on the
Creativity Tap As a teenager, this New Lambton resident found solace in art. A shy girl, she unearthed a way to express herself, fit in and achieve good grades. Throughout her life, art has proven to be a good ally. Last year, she decided to back herself, leave unsatisfying work and find a job that gave her space for creativity. “This is the bravest move I have ever made. Finally, my creative juices started to flow again. Now I’m looking at my art as a part of my income or business,” Nicola said. It has been a long road for Nicola, a journey that started with a homesick 13-year-old in a Zimbabwean boarding school, about a 12-hour drive from her Malawian home. “It was an academic school and not my strength. I hit my stride, though, when the school’s new art block opened. I was in my element. It was fun, interesting, and I could get messy.” The game-changer was a teacher coaching the right-handed Nicola to draw with her left hand. “It clicked. I focused on shapes; my work started to look like people and places. I was proud of my artwork, which showed in increasingly good grades.” Her art studies continued until Year 12, then stopped. “My belief was I wouldn’t make money from art, and in general, art was a creative outlet or hobby. Underlying this was the conviction not to try; it was too hard for little reward.” Following her family doctrine of attending university in the UK, Nicola did a 4-year Hospitality and Tourism degree in Oxford. Through university, she kept an art journal and made gifts. Yet, when she graduated, her creativity stopped upon starting work in Bristol, then Malawi. 30
• FAMILY & COMMUNITY
In 2007, she moved to Australia, “chasing a boy”. It didn’t work out. Still, Nicola decided to stay. In Sydney, she rediscovered her artistic flair while making personalised gifts and jewellery. “I was back in touch with art. It filled me with such happiness.” With this joy came love and her husband, Ronnie. They moved to Cessnock, where Nicola was blessed with an art room. It was here she created her first commercial piece. Helping to create a concierge desk in a vineyards’ hotel, Nicola was inspired to create a fun regional map. She worked about 65 hours a week across several jobs; she crafted the map in 10-minute grabs. So, it took about two years to finish due to time, size and in-depth detail. “People loved it! Some asked where they could find a copy. So, I printed and sold it at local markets and visitor centres. I covered my costs.” Moving to Newcastle, Nicola worked in tourism. However, she ended up miserable and unable to do any artwork. Knowing she needed to find her joie de vivre, Nicola quit without another position.
“People thought I was crazy. Though I felt I would go mad staying. Within two weeks, I had a new job with good hours, space for my artwork and my creative juices returned.” To keep herself in the artistic flow, last month Nicola started a 100-day challenge to post creativity every day on her Facebook page, Nicky’s Original Creations. Each day, she posts a creative activity. Moving forward, Nicole wants to work in acrylic paints, crayons and pencils on one-off paintings, intricate drawings and unique maps. “I love working one-on-one with people and being able to turn their vision into an artwork. I find so much joy in it! I wish to create pieces people want, not work that gets dusty in a shop or storeroom and not enjoyed.” This dream is already coming to fruition through an abstract acrylic that was a wedding gift. From which the bride’s parents commissioned a similar piece in different sizes and colours. Now, Nicola is working on another commissioned piece, a map of a person’s property, which will be used as a marketing and promotional tool.

WORDS Di von Essen When it comes to choosing TV shows for kids to watch, the sheer number can make it a little overwhelming. While some series exist as pure entertainment, others are actually designed to help kids better adjust to the world, teaching them valuable life lessons that inspire social and academic skills. The new Australian preschooler series, The Fo-Fo Figgily Show, has been created for curious, growing minds and features former Hi-5 member Tim Maddren and long-time Neighbours star Natalie Hoflin. Helping children discover the importance of community, inclusivity and positivity through a world of enchanted characters, magical visual effects, 3D animation, imaginative storytelling and original song and music, each episode is designed to help kids learn five valuable life lessons. In each episode, Fo-Fo Figgily (a rare and mystical creature called a Fump) and his friends learn about numbers, shapes, letters, nutrition and fitness while exploring fundamental life lessons like respecting different opinions, how to care for the environment,
contributing to your community, how to adopt a never give up mentality and the importance of mental, physical and emotional resilience. Packed with a playful punch, tune into The Fo-Fo Figgily Show and help your kids understand the five essential life lessons of : • Compassion and kindness towards others • Appreciate words and language • The importance of being physically active every day • Food diversity and nutrition • Exploration and confidence The show has pioneered animation, using the world's most open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool for immersive experiences. Alongside creative innovators such as Disney with their latest Finding Nemo animated film, The Fo-Fo Figgily Show pursued creative greatness integrating live-action filmed on green screen. The Fo-Fo Figgily Show is available to stream on Wizz and Tubi TV.
Learning and Giving Back WORDS Atwea College Wanting a career change, Ken enrolled in the Certificate III in Individual Support Disability with Atwea College in 2021. This course prepared him to work with the disabled,
covering topics such as the legal and ethical implications when working, the human body, access and inclusion for the participant, family and carers, First Aid, CPR and Work Health and Safety procedures.
Ken currently runs his own electrical business; however, the physical side of the job is becoming more difficult. The opportunity to help someone improve their quality of life appealed to him. Ken had four lessons in the classroom before COVID hit and forced him to resume his studies with Atwea online through Canvas and Zoom. Although Ken preferred to learn in a classroom environment, he was able to complete the course online with support from the staff at Atwea, his sister and his daughter. At the moment, Ken is doing both his electrical work and his disability support work. As he winds down his electrical business, he hopes to work more in the disability sector. He is also learning how to be a swimming teacher and hopes to teach people with challenges in their own life how to swim. He chose to study at Atwea for the availability and affordability and looks forward to a happy and healthy future. Ken believes a successful day is when he is a good father, has a meaningful day with a participant, and he is confident, happy and treats people in the way he would like to be treated. He volunteers for Surfing the Spectrum in his spare time, where he takes kids on the spectrum surfing. It’s a fun day for the children, parents and volunteers. He believes the ocean to be a place of healing.

NEWCASTLE OCEAN BATHS UPGRADE TO BEGIN 14 MARCH The long-awaited revitalisation of the Newcastle Ocean Baths will kick off on 14 March with stage one to improve the safety, water quality and accessibility of the much-loved community facility. The first phase of the $14.5m spend will focus on the pools, the lower promenade and pumping system, addressing critical issues identified through detailed community engagement and engineering advice. The Ocean Baths will be closed for the duration of the work, which is expected to be completed by mid-2023. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said City of Newcastle had worked with the construction contractor on a program to limit the overall disruption to users and impact just one summer season.
"City of Newcastle has worked closely with the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group and other stakeholders during the planning and design stages of this project, with improved public health and safety, accessibility, and community preferences among the key considerations," Cr Nelmes said. "Staff have worked closely with the contractor on a plan to limit disruption to users, including keeping the Baths open through this current summer season and aiming to open before summer 2023. "With the Newcastle Ocean Baths turning 100 this November, we are committed to ensuring this upgrade meets the needs of current and future users and look forward to this project delivering significantly improved facilities, which can be enjoyed for the community for years to come."
ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES TARGETED THROUGH GRANTS PROGRAM A Lake Mac school is leading the way when it comes to teaching kids how to live a greener lifestyle. Blacksmiths Public School has been awarded several Community Environment Grants from Council in the past decade, installing greenhouse irrigation, water tanks and other devices to its already thriving vegetable garden. Lake Macquarie City Council Community Partnerships Manager Andrew Bryant said applications for the latest round of Community Environment Grants were now open. Blacksmiths Public School Principal Luke McIlvenie said funding through the grants program was instrumental in expanding his school's sustainability program. "The kids are involved every step of the way, from planting seeds to harvesting and cooking," Mr McIlvenie said. "Sustainable living is a focal point at Blacksmiths Public School; we are bin-less, we have 27 chickens, and we sell the eggs back to the community." Mr Bryant said school P&C groups and other community non-profit organisations were invited to apply and use funds to improve the local environment or inspire environmentally sustainable behaviour. "Successful applicants will be granted up to $5000 to run projects which educate, enrich and inspire the community through sustainable activities." "Past projects have seen creeks rehabilitated, outdoor learning sessions held, and Aboriginal culture taught to students." Grant applications close Friday 1 April. Interested groups are encouraged to attend a free online information session in March. More information can be found at lakemac.com.au
CEDAR MILL CONCERT VENUE A GAMECHANGER FOR MORISSET A new event space at Morisset that will host headline national and international performers will put Lake Macquarie on the map as an event tourism destination and create new economic and social opportunities in the city's southwest precinct. Lake Macquarie City Councillors voted unanimously tonight to approve Winarch Capital's development application for the Cedar Mill event site on the former Morisset Country Club golf course. The entertainment facility will host a range of events, markets and functions, with the capacity to stage outdoor performances for audiences of up to 30,000. The development application for the event site is central to Cedar Mill's multi-million dollar redevelopment of the golf course, including a tourist park, outdoor gardens, café, restaurant, splash park and other recreation areas. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the development would boost the profile of Morisset and help realise the area's untapped potential.
BLACKSMITHS PUBLIC SCHOOL INTEGRATED A GREENHOUSE IRRIGATION SYSTEM TO THE VEGETABLE GARDEN WITH GRANT FUNDING
"The development will have positive economic benefits for Morisset and the city, facilitating exciting new tourism and entertainment opportunities, creating jobs in the area and generating significant flow-on benefits for local tourism operators, hospitality vendors, equipment providers and other businesses that support and supply the event industry," Cr Fraser said. "It will boost the night-time economy and provide much-needed new social and recreational amenities for the people of Morisset and surrounding communities." NEW WAR MEMORIAL FOR MEDOWIE IN TIME FOR ANZAC DAY Medowie will have a new war memorial in time for ANZAC Day. Construction has commenced on the new monument at Medowie Social on Ferodale Rd, which will provide a safe location for commemorations while improving the overall experience. "There are several problems with the current war memorial at Lions Park, such as lack of parking, limited space and poor visibility, which impact on services and pose a considerable safety risk," said Central Ward Councillor Chris Doohan. "Our Council has worked closely with the Medowie RSL Sub Branch to find a more suitable location and to design a memorial that respectfully honours Australia's servicemen and women while catering for growing crowds. "As both a Royal Australian Air Force veteran and local Councillor, I am proud to have been able to help deliver this new memorial for Medowie." The memorial incorporates a corten steel silhouette of a lone soldier, alongside sandstone plinths and commemorative plantings like Gallipoli rosemary, Gallipoli roses and Grevillea Spirit of ANZAC. An Eternal Flame will be included at a later stage. Construction is expected to be completed by early April. FAMILY & COMMUNITY •

Using Colour as an Antidote in 2022 Perry Homes
As we reflect on the past two years, we can see that the effects of COVID-19 have seeped into varying levels of our lives. We are all spending much more time at home, visiting with family and close friends and looking after our own mental and physical wellbeing. Perry Homes has noticed a shift in the way people engage with their homes, particularly when it comes to interior design and colour choices. "In the new post virus world, we can see that colour choice will play an important role with clients when they build a new home. Colour will be used to help deliver a calm, peaceful environment that promotes mental wellbeing," says Senior Interior Designer at Perry Homes, Zoe Milburn. Many trend reports predict anxiety, fear, and stress as the key drivers of a new trend called Self-Care. A concept that places greater importance on our overall health, emotional, physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing. Perry Homes has noticed this shift in their clients' aspirations for their new home. "Nature has become a big inspiration when it comes to choosing a colour palette for our client's homes. We can create calm and wellness using colour psychology in our own sanctuary," said Zoe. In home décor, the shift in colours has very much turned from cool shades to warm natural colours and this is set to grow.
The colours that people are now drawn to are soft, earthy, whimsical and warm, and above all, they are very easy to live with. "I love the natural pallet of whites blended with blues, greens and pinks. Don't be afraid of colour in your home," said Zoe. We asked Zoe what her favourites are, and here are her on-trend tips! THE NEW WHITES Warmer shades of white are coming back. They are soft off-whites with just a touch of ochre or pink to give them a cocooning effect in our homes, making us feel warm and cosy. Try Dulux Casper White Half, Dulux Natural White or Dulux Beige Artefacts. BALANCING BLUES Blue is the most universally liked colour. Reflective of the sea and the sky, its calming effect on us is quite immediate physically. Blue is also a trustworthy colour, a stable colour and a great one to use to bring calm and peacefulness to our homes. Blues inspire coastal looks, so think about blue shades found in nature for inspiration. Try Dulux Cameo Blue Half, Dulux Blue Shell, Dulux Niche.
CALMING GREENS Green is symbolically the colour of nature and wellbeing. So it's no surprise that blue and green look amazing together in a room. These shades bring the outdoors in to both calm and invigorate us. Forget the old saying that 'blues and greens should never be seen…,' because they are all around us in nature. Try Dulux Powdered Gum, Dulux Herbalist, Dulux Soft Fresco. PERFECT PINK We have seen the rise of what has been called 'Millennial Pink', now that pink has morphed to a warmer blush pink with a more earthier tone. Part of the desert palette, earthier pinks have a calming effect. The trick to pink is a little goes a long way, so try it as an accent - it pairs beautifully with sage greens, dusty terracotta shades and natural rattan. Try Dulux Yolande, Dulux Pancake Mix, Dulux Maiko For more inspiration, visit one of Perry Homes display homes locations today in Chisholm, Thornton and Hamlyn Terrace; visit www.perryhomes.com.au or call 02 4021 1680. 7TH HOLE - THE VINTAGE GOLF COURSE
Unique Development Delivers a Perfectly Balanced Lifestyle JOHN STEVENS
WORDS LIANE MORRIS The Stevens Group is one of the industry's leading private and diversified property development companies. Founded in 1982 by John Stevens, the company has delivered over 250 quality and award-winning landmark developments throughout New South Wales, including residential properties, industrial, retail, commercial, hotels and resort living. The company has won many awards, including the recent 2021 UDIA Award for the best regional development in NSW with their newly completed Foreshore development at Toronto. John Stevens grew up on the Central Coast near Gosford and still lives there to this day. His first job was in real estate sales with Peter Walsh, who taught him ethics and the benefits of hard work. The move into property development was driven by a passion for the industry and a desire to create the type of dwellings and communities that people want to live in. “Everything we create is based on sustainability and quality,” said John. “We build communities that we want to live in ourselves. I’m extremely fortunate to have the best team in the industry beside me, as well as amazing partnerships that have had a major influence over the projects we produce.” John refers to partners in The Vintage such as golfer Greg Norman and Medallist, with who he collaborated with in the early days of The Vintage in the Hunter Valley, as the 18-hole championship golf course was designed by Greg Norman himself. He also talks with great
admiration of the American developer and entrepreneur Don Panoz whom he partnered on the development of Chateau Elan, saying Don was a great guy. John is also proud of the team that works alongside him. Ben Shoo, the urban designer and Lin Armstrong, our town planner who have worked on the early plans for The Vintage Hunter Valley, and are still on the design team today, along with a number of longterm professionals who have been with the Stevens Group between 20 to 25 years and are considered the best in the industry. “We never stop looking at new and innovative ways to improve on the unique living experience for our projects”. The Vintage Hunter Valley is a unique development in the vineyard precinct that combines leisure and tourism with residential dwellings, creating a perfectly balanced lifestyle in a location that is surrounded by cellar doors, restaurants and sweeping country views, all within 2 hours of Sydney. The latest development, The Residence Apartments at The Vintage, for the first time, builds on this by offering luxury space with the ease of apartment living. Designed by EJE, the apartments feature large open plan living spaces leading to balconies that overlook the vineyard views and deliver a new high benchmark of quality and subtle elegance. Currently under construction, the apartments are due to be completed by mid-2023, with many of them already sold to people who currently own in The Vintage - a fact that indicates the high esteem the estate has in the eyes of its community*.
Another exciting new development for The Vintage Hunter Valley is the near completion of NINETEEN, a restaurant and bar complex that will open mid-2022 and is designed to be the centrepiece of The Vintage, delivering a lifestyle that would be hard to match. The venue will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and relaxed dinners with a Sports Bar connected to an undercover outdoor entertainment area. Upstairs is a laid-back, casual dining area with an indoor/outdoor fireplace. The architecture of the building has taken the vineyard architectural style into account, with heritage trusses and 100-year-old timber floors a stylistic feature. There are plans to extend the estate out to Palmers Lane in the future, and a commitment to the architectural and landscaping guidelines delivered from the beginning of the development. Families will continue to grow within the estate as part of the community. There is more in the pipeline, from kilometres of running and walking paths, sculptures and lifestyle developments, all forming part of the future vision of the estate. “It still takes my breath away when I drive into the entrance of The Vintage, and I know we’ve delivered an outstanding project. Over 23 years we have created a sustainable, stunning, natural environment on over 1000 acres of land, and I’m extremely proud of it. We didn’t just build an estate; we created a community.” * The Residence Apartments at The Vintage are being sold off the plan. HUNTER HOMES & LIFESTYLE •

COSY UP FOR THE COOLER MONTHS WORDS OZ Design As we are all gearing up for the cooler months ahead, now is the perfect time to prepare your home interior to match this change in season. Of course, embracing winter means spending more time indoors, soaking up the warmth of your coffee mug and hibernating in style. But, unlike what many moviemakers would have us believe, you don’t always need a fireplace to create a cosy sanctuary in your living space. By simply adding the right textures, colours and accessories, you can create both a luxurious and comforting style in your home.
Adding in warm white hues can take the edge off of the bright summer tones, effortlessly creating a serene living space for you and your family to enjoy. Investing in a cosy throw blanket and switching out your bright greenery with earthy dried foliage can make all the difference. A couple of our favourites include the beige Arna throw for your lounge and our Cabat vase for a texturised focal point in the corner of the room. In addition, we love the look of decorative pottery paired with smooth ceramics to simultaneously create interest and depth in the space. Whether you like to live in cosy comfort or in ultimate style, transform your home into a space that feels like there is no place like it. As you’ll be spending more time indoors, why not add a splash of abstract energy to your home with a piece of wall art like we have here. Not only does it frame the space it is in, but wall art also plays on the different elements and textiles around the room to produce a perfectly balanced harmony. For more wall art and homewares options, check out our wide range of collections online at Oz Design Furniture. The cooler months ahead also means that it’s time to start incorporating darker accents into your home décor and living space. The conventional winter colours have always been
dark, natural tones like amber, charcoal and timber. However, using black can be daunting for many homeowners, especially when many Australian homes display the classic all-white ‘Hamptons’ look that we all love. We’ve shown here in this living space that when styled correctly, black can elevate your home by creating interest and depth to contrast the rest of your light décor. Therefore, we suggest you go bold by using black accents within your furniture this season. As a safe and easy way to introduce darker tones to your space without creating such a harsh contrast, we’ve paired our Tallow console table with the Modero stool. Featuring a marble tabletop and a woven rattan seat, this combination is the perfect balance between organic and contemporary styles. Whether you want casual seating in the living room or salient bedroom décor, intertwining black with natural fibres introduce a bold but impactful look and feel into any room in your home. For the daring risk-takers, this new collection also features full black stools for making a striking focal point in your home bars or kitchen areas. Head to your local store and enjoy all things furniture and homewares with OZ Design Furniture this season.
