From the Editors... It entertains millions of people around the world with its high-octane thrills, precision passing and amazing displays of edge-of-your-seat driving. But when the spectacle of the Newcastle 500 rolls into town this month to wrap up the 2019 Supercars season, there will be plenty more than just the on-track action for people to enjoy. The City of Newcastle and local businesses have developed an exciting schedule of complementary activities that will be held across the central business district throughout November 21-24, with a focus on making the weekend about more than just a race. And let’s not forget the two bands who will rock the stage at the event, who say they can’t wait to see their thousands of fans file into one of the biggest concerts ever held at the No.1 Sportsground. KISS and the Screaming Jets will perform the ultimate celebration for fans in KISS’s only outdoor concert in Australia, with the promise of plenty of the band’s trademark pyrotechnic displays. But if it’s the roar of engines and the smell of burning rubber that gets your engine going, then you’ll also want to know who the movers and shakers are in this year's final event – and it’s going to come down to the wire. Find out all this and more in this month’s special Newcastle 500 Pull-Out. This month we also welcome the return of Music in the Podium for the events 21st year. If unwinding on a Friday evening to the silky sounds of local musical talent, glass in hand while the sun sets slowly over the Warners Bay waterfront sounds like a treat then you’re in for a smorgasbord of treats this summer. Don’t miss the program's kick-off on 1 November. It would be remiss of us not to mention that this is the 50th issue of intouch Magazine. We hope you have enjoyed reading all about your local area with inspirational stories and big glossy images highlighting our favourite local businesses, events and people. We’re proud to be the only locally owned and produced magazine and incredibly grateful to you, and all of our readers for making intouch Magazine the Hunter’s favourite magazine. Enjoy! Mahalia Barnes
Up!
Thursday, 5 December 2019
Mahalia Barnes was born into the Australian music industry. Despite being the daughter of Australia’s most successful vocalist Jimmy Barnes, Mahalia has firm ideas about her own music – and much of it revolves around old school soul. At age 15, Mahalia began her career touring and recording as a backing singer for her Dad. Since then she has worked for and alongside many artists, both Australian and international, including Roachford, Mica Paris, Sweet Pea Atkinson (Was Not Was), Disco Montego, Diesel, David Campbell, Blue King Brown, Kid Confucius, The Hands, Jackie Orszackzy, Tina Harrod, Tim Rogers (You am I), Guy Sebastian, Gary Pinto and many others. Mahalia also began singing clubs and doing her own original shows with friends such as Jade MacRae with whom Mahalia wrote the track It's A Shame from the Soul Mates album, as well as Gonna Take Some Time – a top 40 single from Jimmy Barnes Double Happiness album. She also cowrote Feel, a song which featured on Jade MacRaes Debut album. It's in Mahalia’s blood to put on an amazing performance every time she steps on stage and Lizotte’s will be no exception.

FOR THE
Family Dali: Hallucinogenic Toreador
MAC Opening Weekend
Friday, 15th – Saturday, 23rd November Dali: Hallucinogenic Toreador, a new play by Carl Caulfield, (Where Late the Songbird, The Anatomy of Buzz, Shakespeare’s Fools), uses the scandalous and surreal life of Salvador Dali to ask questions about art and fame. Outrageous, flamboyant and often on the edge of sanity, Dali considered himself a genius, but was this just a mask to hide his fear? The obsessions and neuroses that drove his art and life – grasshoppers, melting clocks, crutches, telephones and doubles, also expose his shameful secrets and raise disturbing questions about his legacy. As surreal and provocative as a Dali masterpiece, this new play promises a wild, joyous and moving journey into Dali’s strange and fascinating world. See one of six performances at Civic Theatre. Visit www.civictheatre.com.au for tickets.

issues. Don’t put off tricky conversations, even if the situation is complicated. It’s not until early December that the romance tables turn in your favour. At work, however, give yourself plenty of chances to experiment with different styles or projects. Escape the same old rut. Aries 21 March – 20 April Sometimes it seems that fate gives with one hand and takes with the other. Thankfully, November signals the end of this struggle. Once again, you’re motivated and heading towards success. If you have a brilliant proposal in the back of your mind, bring it to the fore. If you’re more inclined to hit the road for a while, now is your chance to roam. It looks like a huge financial leap is also on the horizon.

Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars.
STAR OF THE MONTH Scorpio 23 October – 21 November Mercury is at a standstill – a warning that someone’s timing is off. Mercury rules siblings, communication, cars, technology and travel. So take care, confusion will surround these areas until early December. Soon after, singles catch the attention of someone special. Couples push towards material achievement. But there could still be pressure to fall in line with another’s needs. End result: tetchiness. Don’t fret. The cosmos promises red hot passion through the summer months. The new year, too, offers the unexpected. Travel is likely, although most trips look like being short dashes. But there’s still much to be said for exploring unmapped territory – making new contacts, for a start.
Sagittarius November 22 – December 21 Despite your best efforts, a backward moving Mercury seems all too happy to point out life’s limitations. Still, it’ll take more than a tetchy cosmos to choke the greater dream. Use tact and your natural Sagittarian charm to resolve dilemmas. By month’s end, you have the cosmos back on side. Romantic prospects become electrifying, though stability can’t be assured. If someone is complicating a simple issue, stay solo. Capricorn December 22 – January 19 Capricorns work hard to keep friendships solid, so it throws you when a good mate seems to be unreliable. Is there someone new vying for their attention? Give them the benefit of the doubt. You can still enjoy their company, even if you don’t feel quite as close. At work, play your cards close to your chest. Your financial and personal affairs will enjoy more chance of quiet success if they remain unadvertised for the time being. Aquarius 20 January – 18 February It’s time to kick back, relax and not take yourself or others too seriously. With Mercury out of phase and creating negative thoughts, excessive anxiety could make you irritable. Think carefully about creating rifts that you’re likely to regret. To ward off Mercury’s pessimism, do everything in your power to alleviate stress and have fun. A little romance and revelry might do. Some healthy exercise too. Pisces 19 February – 20 March You can’t enjoy a relationship when you don’t know where you stand, so November’s Mercury retrograde is a trigger to sort out uncertain
Taurus 21 April – 20 May With plenty of your zodiac neighbours heading for the hammock, here’s your chance to shine. Major planets overrule a lazy Mercury, all vying to give you that extra spark. Indeed, things are going so well that you might shelve professional aspirations for now -especially when unexpected detours hold the promise of new love or friendship. A soul mate may be closer than you think. Gemini 21 May – 21 June Here we go again, with Mercury starting to back-peddle after the 2nd. Your world seems to crash in all directions this month, sending change and upheaval your way. Communications are delayed; money doesn’t arrive on time, electronics break down. If this pattern feels familiar, that's because you’ve dealt with such cosmic mischief before. Take a deep breath. This, too, shall pass. Cancer 22 June – 22 July Every month has its complications, and Mercury’s backflip creates even more delays. Don’t worry. Focus on your fabulous friendships instead. Any hint of monotony is overshadowed by your thrills-andspills attitude. Whether this leads to disappointment depends on your expectations. Someone you considered a potential lover may become a lifelong friend instead. Leo 23 July – 22 August Many of the hoops to jump through, rules or regulations, have been removed almost by magic, in order to make your life just a bit easier. Help comes from seemingly strange directions. It is almost as if a loving force is saying, “here…I’ll take care of that for you.” Things that should normally never be possible or even make sense are likely to occur now. Make the most of November’s cosmic support. Virgo 23 August – 22 September Your ruler, Mercury, is out of phase for a couple of weeks and that spells short term trouble. Life may become a tad more complex now, so try to simplify your daily existence by avoiding headaches, stress or physical or mental fatigue. Tackle one thing at a time and don’t make major decisions or purchases. The good news: love brings surprises, though possibly the illicit kind. Libra 23 September – 22 October It’s time to organise work and money matters, as the communication planet Mercury turns backwards in Scorpio, your second house of finances, until early December. Mishaps and misunderstandings could create monetary meltdowns, so take some precautionary measures – such as switching up your passwords on online accounts and backing up important data. And don’t sign any important documents.

It was during her first visit to England that Tanya was introduced to astrology, and in 1980 she gained her London Faculty of Astrological Studies qualifications. Paul McDermott and Gatesy Go Solo in Newcastle – November 13 Songs of beauty, songs of heartbreak, freshlyminted comedy concoctions, old squabbles and spontaneous nonsense. Two of Australia’s most adored singer-songwriters lock harmonies and minds in one unmissable show. Paul McDermott (Doug Anthony All Stars) and Steven Gates (Tripod) have been friends for 18 years and singing together in private for five years. It’s time for them to share. Best known as the middle-men of two of Australia’s greatest musical-comedy trios, McDermott and Gates made their official debut as a musical duo at a one-off event at the 2017 Ballarat Cabaret Festival. That one-off spawned a sequel with a sold-out show at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival and subsequent performances before thousands of people at the Port Fairy and Woodford Folk Festivals. The poetry of their lyrics and the beauty of their voices have enthralled audiences, with demands for further shows coming from all corners of Australia. Don't miss the chance to see these two extraordinary talents at Lizotte's, together at last.
Steve Balbi – 16 November The creative chameleon, Steve Balbi, returns to Lizotte’s for one night only on Saturday 16 November. The music of singer, composer, performer and producer mines a kaleidoscope of life at the margins. Navigating a wistful path from melancholy through madness, transcending
Paul McDermott and Steven Gates
rock and pop as he coalesces sentimentality and soul, Balbi bespeaks Bowie and Dylan in melody and verse, meanwhile exploring the heterogeneity, refinement and dirty rotten groove of Radiohead. Exclusive to Lizotte’s, Balbi will be joined by Sydney songstress, drummer, percussionist and pianist, Lozz Benson (John Butler Trio). A noted regular at Bluesfest, the Woodford Folk Festival, Sydney Festival and Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival, Benson has performed with Paul Kelly, Steve Smyth, Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil), Sandy Evans, All Our Exes Live in Texas, Chris D’Rozario (Brian Setzer), Jacob Stone (Bluejuice), The Vegetable Plot and Zoe Hauptmann, to name just a few. Balbi and Benson’s exclusive appearance at Lizotte’s is one show not to be missed. For tickets and more information visit www.lizottes.com.au

UNIQUE TO MARKET Stalls Launching in November The Olive Tree Market will launch the first market in it’s Summer Series on 2 November at Civic Park in Newcastle. It’s at this time of year you can expect to discover unique-to-market stalls, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for us! Drop-in on the first and third Saturdays on November and December and check out the newcomers as well as your long-term favourites. Launching at the 2 November market is Salvation Jewellery – a Darwin-based handmade polymer clay earring business. Designer Shona Johnson makes small-batch, vibrant earrings packed with colour and pattern. Each unique piece is designed and handmade in her home studio. Also in town is Gina Ermer – a Newcastle sustainable eco-fashion success story. Her brand Fringe Dweller is based in the east end of Newcastle in a gorgeous heritage design studio and retail outlet. Gina is the designer and maker, 12 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
with a strong creative process that is evident in her pieces. Love Your Space will also debut on 2 November – Danielle Burley is the founder and photographer of Love Your Space, which was launched two years ago in Warrnambool, Victoria. Dani has recently relocated back to Newcastle with her family for some much-needed sunshine and family time. On 16 November, Velvet Sunday launch their first stall at the market. Nadine Coghlan of Velvet Sunday is an emerging designer of slow-crafted jewellery who aims to create unique and timeless pieces that carry a meaning for those unspoken moments. Nadine says that her pieces are created: “To say that which cannot be said, and to say it with beauty and grace.” Velvet Sunday uses the ancient lost wax casting method, a technique where illustrations are hand-carved into wax and then cast into metal. This method produces pieces that are organic, individual, and imperfect. The range is available in sterling silver, solid gold, 14ct and 18ct triple gold plate and brass. Artist Amy Moffatt of TRAM makes original art pieces that come from a love of the world and the places we live. When she launches her stall on 16 November, you'll discover art prints for your wall featuring all the places you love. We love that TRAM proudly uses recycled materials at their small printing house in Sydney and are committed to leaving the smallest eco-footprint possible. BE A CHRISTMAS HERO at The Bikers For Kids Toy Run The Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run is an extraordinary festive season favourite that has been running for over 40 years and is proudly supported by City of Newcastle. From 10am to 1:30pm Sunday, 1st December, Wickham Park will come alive for kids and families for Christmas – bikes, music, amusements, children's activities, food trucks, markets, competitions, prizes, motorcycle displays and so much more. Inspired by the incredible costumes last year and our community’s commitment to help one another, 2019 will be themed as the ‘Costume for Kids’. 2NURFM are on-board once again as the official Media Partner, with drive host Kev Kellaway stepping up to MC the big day after participating in the ride “I’ve ridden in the Toy Run for several years now, and there’s a wonderful feeling of goodwill and charity throughout the ride. It’s a pleasure to assist the Bikers for Kids and Salvation Army, who help so many families throughout the Hunter, especially at Christmas time,” said Mr Kellaway. One of the day’s highlights is undoubtedly the fantastic spectacle for all to enjoy with the arrival of up to 10,000 bikes, riders and pillions decorated in Christmas and Superhero costumes at Wickham Park from approximately 10.20am. There will also be a raffle of a Sol
Invictus Apollo Cafe Racer motorcycle worth over $6999, with tickets selling at $5 each (what a Christmas gift!), live entertainment thanks to Big Apachee, face-painting, a splash dunk tank, photos with Santa, fairy floss, and more fun for kids. There will also be prizes for riders and best-dressed spectators – so get out your best fancy dress and put your best foot forward! The real heart of the event is the massive donation point for new and unwrapped toys for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal. Last year, The Toy Run benefited over 4,000 local families. The Salvation Army mascot 'Shieldy' will be roving the park and greeting guests. Givers are also urged to remember older children aged up to 18, with suggested gift ideas listed on the website. Be a Christmas hero and join the cause to support local families in need! To find out how you can get involved, or simply just come and enjoy the day, visit www.newcastletoyrun.com.au

Shake Off the Weeks' Stresses at
Music in the Podium!
If unwinding on a Friday evening to the silky sounds of local musical talent, glass in hand while the sun sets slowly over the Warners Bay waterfront sounds like a treat then you’re in for a smorgasbord of treats this summer as the 21st season of Music in the Podium hits the stage on Friday 1 November.
“This season we have another fantastic program of performances lined up that will make Friday nights on the Warners Bay Foreshore a ‘must-do’ activity. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for our special Christmas Carol evening with Central Church on Friday, December 20,” said Event Manager, Rhonda Campbell. Warners Bay Chamber of Commerce President, Murray Halyburton, said he is looking forward to the launch of the 21st season, with the event made possible by major naming rights sponsor Hunter Water Corporation for the 2nd year running. Co-sponsors for the season are Lake Macquarie City Council, HL Mullane, Warners Bay and Lake Macquarie Private Hospitals and Energy Management Services. And we’re delighted to add that intouch Magazine is the new media partner for the event. “The corporate sponsorship we have received over the last 21 years has been extremely valuable in helping establish this iconic fixture on the lake and cementing Warners Bay’s reputation as an entertainment and lifestyle destination,” said Mr Halyburton. “Throughout the season there is a fantastic mix of popular covers, rock, jazz, blues, swing and big bands.” Of course, it’s not just the music that’s tasty. Rhonda says that if you don’t feel like packing a picnic basket, visitors can enjoy one of the many local eateries or on-site catering. “Hunter Water - Music in the Podium is a free, familyfriendly event that attracts up to 4000 people each week to the Warners Bay Foreshore. The rejuvenated foreshore provides the perfect backdrop to unwind on a Friday evening, watch the sunset across the lake and catch up with friends while listening to some fantastic live music,” she said. Hunter Water Music in the Podium will run from the first Friday in November 2019 until the 27th March 2020, except

Other performers to enjoy throughout November (which has a record five Friday nights!) include Walking Pheonix, 2 Good Reasons, Felix Quinn Band and Prestige Inc. recent press conference, back then, there weren’t as many places where you could play outdoors. Now the country has stunning purpose-built venues where the band can design the tour to be bigger, better and louder than ever before. The tour comes with both a new single and a new album titled Blood Moon. Fittingly, the lead track is titled Getting The Band Back Together. It was written by the band’s primary songwriter, Don Walker and, in the mode of Cold Chisel classics like Bow River and Saturday Night, the song sees Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes trading lead vocal lines. Getting The Band Back Together is released on Thursday, 31 October and will be followed before Christmas by a new album. One thing the guys have always been great at is surrounding themselves with other great muso’s, and Hope Estate will be no different, with Birds of Tokyo and Busby Marou covering the support. It’s going to be one hell of a show and quoting the very talented Jimmy Barnes “if fans miss this one they are going to be really F*&%ing sorry!” Head to www.ticketek.com.au for tickets. Fans are reminded to only buy tickets through official sites.
Local Blood Moon Rising for Cold Chisel's Last Stand
SCENE
There’s nothing more Australian than hot sun, warm waves and Cold Chisel. Thankfully the Hunter will soon witness, what may very well be Chisels last stand. Hope Estate will host the Blood Moon tour on January 18, 2020. This will be the bands first-ever completely outdoor tour. Cold Chisel broke up in 1983, and as Jimmy Barnes pointed out at a
Boo Seeka – New Tour and Single Newcastle lad Ben Gumbleton and his BOO Seeka collaborator Michael May are readying themselves for a myriad of late-night adventures and have created the perfect soundtrack with new single Moonlight Run, and accompanying video.
An ode to the magic of the witching hour, Ben 'BOO' Gumbleton says the song – which premiered on Triple J in late October – is a celebration of those spontaneous nights when everything is as it should be: “Moonlight Run is meant to replicate the feeling of excitement when its 12am, you're with your mates, and you can just feel its going to be a great night. You don't know how or what, but you've just got this growing feeling. Those times where you know you're about to make some AM memories that will be stored forever.” With the melody arriving on a whim while hanging on a mate's balcony, BOO rushed inside to lay down the bones of the track: "I left midway through a conversation to go inside, grab the guitar and my phone to record before coming out and explaining to everyone what had just happened and why I disappeared." Coming together in the studio with long-time production collaborator Ian Pritchett, the final iteration of the track builds on swirling synths, and BOO's signature vocal to a dizzying climax meant for only one purpose: dancing! BOO Seeka are self-confessed night owls which is probably why they love touring so much — recently announcing a huge 14-date end of year run through NSW, including an appearance at Bitter and Twisted in Maitland on November 2 and Shoal Bay Country Club on November 22. They’ll then head to Indonesia for two beach sideshows. Having well surpassed 50 million streams across their catalogue, BOO Seeka have collected tens of thousands of fans since the release of their acclaimed debut album Never Too Soon and are hard at work on the 2020 follow up. The NSW to Indo Summer Series is one last chance to get the full BOO experience before year-end. For tickets head to www.booseeka.com

expect to hear all your favourites from Elton’s substantial songbook and gain rare insight into the personal meaning behind his greatest hits. “The time is right to say thank you to my fans and say goodbye,” the showman said of his farewell tour – and if there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that he’ll go out in style. Things certainly won’t be slowing down at Hope as January continues! Australian rock legends Cold Chisel are set to take the stage with two special guests on Saturday, 18th January. Blasting onto the scene in the late 70's/early 80s, the ARIA Hall of Fame inductees have sold almost seven million albums over the past 40 years – and have only reformed for four national tours since 1983. But the Blood Moon Tour 2020 gets the band back together for a string of special outdoor shows. Throughout the summer, Cold Chisel will be serenading Australian audiences with their classic blend of rockabilly, roughhouse soul and blues, led by iconic frontman Jimmy Barnes. The band will be joined on tour by a string of special guests; lucky Hunter fans will catch sets by alt-rock outfit Birds of Tokyo and blues-and-roots duo Busby Marou at the Hope Estate gig. It’s Concert Season in Wine Country WORDS Claire Bradshaw
Forget the Christmas season – at Hope Estate, it’s almost time for concert season! As the days grow longer and warmer, it’s time to grab the picnic blanket and head to Wine Country for a host of incredible summer events. First up is Jazz in the Vineyards – a Hunter Valley favourite returning to the Hope Estate grounds on Saturday, 7th December. This year’s line-up is led by Aussie jazz/pop icon, Kate Ceberano. With over 35 years in the business under her belt, Kate has fronted bands, led the cast in hit stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar, and built a solo career that includes 27 albums and multiple ARIA Awards. Accompanied by her band, Kate will headline this year’s festival with a late afternoon set, playing all her hits. Also on the line-up is John Morrison’s Swing City Band, featuring vocalist Jacki Cooper. This 14-piece big band will be getting festival-goers up and dancing with traditional jazz, swing, funk and jazz-rock tunes. The outfit is headed by John Morrison (the elder brother of trumpeter James Morrison), who holds the title of ‘Australia’s best Big Band drummer’ and is known to delight audiences with his humour and rollicking performances. 16 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
Rounding out the day will be The Aston Martinis, an energetic four-piece band playing cool swing and classic soul tunes, and The Djangologists, a quintet that adds their own special twist to music inspired by jazz legend Django Reinhardt. Pair all the great jazz vibes with Hunter Valley wine, craft beer, markets and a kids’ zone, and you’ve got the perfect day out for families and friends. “It’s such a wonderful time of the year to sit outdoors in the sunshine with a cheese platter, a glass of bubbles, have a laugh and take in the atmosphere of the day,” sums up Hope Estate owner, Karen Hope. In the new year, it will be time to say goodbye to Elton John as he visits the Hunter on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. Playing two dates at Hope Estate (Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th January), the music icon will be pulling out all the stops to close the curtain on his incredible 50-year career. The pre-retirement tour began back in September 2018, where Sir Elton kicked off an astonishing run of over 300 shows set to span five continents and multiple years. His final ever concerts will take place in the UK in December 2021 – but before that he’ll be hitting our shores for 24 shows, including the big January weekend at Hope. With elaborate stage production, a fabulous tour wardrobe by Gucci (of course), and accompaniment from his full band, it’s set to be an unforgettable experience. You can

Farewell Elton… Hello Jimmy!
For those who are after a different kind of summer experience at Hope Estate – you’re in luck! On Saturday, 1st February, the venue will play host to the 5K Foam Fest. This family-friendly event is headed to the Hunter in support of Make-A-Wish Australia, a children’s charity that provides unique experiences for children with critical illnesses. By participating in Foam Fest, you’ll be helping seriously ill Australian kids and their families – all while having a whole lot of fun on the grounds of Hope Estate. So what does the 5K Foam Fest entail, exactly? Well, as the event title suggests, foam is the name of the game in this one-of-a-kind fun run. It’s an obstacle course rather than a straightforward 5K, with 2.5 million cubic feet of foam pumped over everything in sight! After wading through a wall of foam at the starting line, you’ll be running, jumping, climbing, clambering and crawling your way over and under 22 obstacles. With mud pits, foam zones and huge inflatable waterslides, it won’t be the cleanest 5K you’ve ever done, but it just might be the most fun. And don’t forget it’s all for a good cause: Make-A-Wish will receive all money raised through participant fundraising, so be sure to get the word out and raise some dollars to fund your run and support kids in need.
We have 2 x VIP Members Area double passes for Jazz in the Vines! The prize includes: Event entry, VIP Members Area access with private bar, private toilets, VIP front of stage viewing area access and VIP Parking. Visit the giveaways page at www.intouchmagazine.com. au – be quick, entries close November 31st, 2019.

Kids will have fun on jumping castles and face painting, and afterwards, families can enjoy a bite to eat at nearby Darby, Hunter and King Streets where you’re spoilt for choice with restaurants, bars and cafes. Over the weekend, Hunter Street Mall, next to the race precinct, will be abuzz with billy cart challenges, pop-up shops, family-friendly activities and live entertainment. It’s all free, action-packed fun, that will help traders raise precious funds for local charities. This is a great opportunity for locals to see what’s on offer in the Mall and for event-goers to step outside the precinct and get a taste of local life. The entertainment will continue at Civic Park throughout
the weekend with a super-sized Newcastle-themed monopoly board, monster truck slide, jumping castles, obstacle course and an auto-racer simulator. There’s also a dedicated undersix play area and an adrenalin-rush obstacle course for big kids and adults. Global superstars KISS will rock Saturday night at our very own No.1 Sportsground, one of just seven Australian venues on their End of the World tour. Known for their trademark larger-than-life blistering performances, KISS has for decades been the most iconic live show in rock and roll. Local rock stars the Screaming Jets, led by original frontman Dave Gleeson, will be special guests and a highlight for many Novocastrians who remember the 1980s and ‘90s. For Newcastle 500 event-goers, it’s an easy 2km walk from the race precinct to the concert. Take your time and enjoy the journey - it’s dotted with eating and drinking options on Hunter and King streets, Honeysuckle and throughout Cooks Hill. Nearby Marketown is open late and has takeaway options and supermarket conveniences. We invite everyone to enjoy Newcastle over this big weekend. The light rail is perfect for jumping on and off at key locations and getting a taste of all that’s on offer. If you’re a visitor to our beautiful city, why not venture farther afield. Take a stroll on our stunning Bathers Way, soak up the view from the top of Strzelecki Lookout and dip your toes or more in the water at Merewether Ocean Baths. We love living here, and sharing what we treasure most is what we’re all about.
Scott McLaughlin McLaughlin is undoubtedly at the top of his game right now. The Shell Ford Mustang driver claimed last year’s Championship on the street of Newcastle in emphatic style on the Sunday, after running out of fuel in the opening race of the event. This year he has been almost unrivalled. He has won both races at the Adelaide 500, became the first-ever Supercars driver to win Darwin’s Triple Crown, claimed his maiden Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 crown in a race that will be talked about for years to come and broke the all-time record for wins in a year. The 26-year old kiwi is all but assured of lifting the Championship Trophy again in Newcastle on November 24 and will be hoping to do so after yet another race victory. Easily the favourite for this year’s event.
Shane van Gisbergen Stripped of his only race win in Newcastle post-race last year, van Gisbergen will be out to prove a point in 2019. The 2016 Supercars Champion is second in Championship standings behind McLaughlin heading into Newcastle this year, but that won’t mean a thing when they go door-to-door up Watt Street this year. Lee Holdsworth The veteran has wound back the clock in 2019 having one of his best-ever seasons in Supercars in the Bottle-O Mustang of Tickford. Holdsworth has been unlucky on a few occasions to miss the podium this year and will be hoping to break his luck in Newcastle this year after a strong showing on the street circuit in previous years.
Jamie Whincup Whincup snatched the title in arguably the most memorable finale to a Supercars season ever back in 2017 and celebrated with a backflip into the Harbour. 2019 hasn’t gone perfectly to plan for Supercars greatest ever race and title winner, and the seven-time Champion will be looking to finish the year on a high in his Red Bull Holden.
James Courtney In what will be his last year with Walkinshaw Andretti United, Courtney will be hoping to go out on a high before moving to the Sydney-based team in 2020. The 2010 Supercars Champion is a street circuit specialist and has gone within a whisker of a podium at Newcastle in previous years.
David Reynolds Reynolds is one of just three drivers to have officially won a race in Newcastle and will be out to claim his second race win on the streets of the CBD this year when he takes to the track in the Penrite Racing KISS Commodore. Fans will love the livery Reynolds and teammate Anton De Pasquale will roll out in at Newcastle, which is promoting Saturday night’s concert by the rock legends KISS, supported by Newcastle’s own, The Screaming Jets.
Simona De Silvestro In 2017, De Silvestro showed the world that she was the real deal on the streets of Newcastle, with some of the best passing moves seen in Supercars. A favourite on and off the track with young fans, everyone will be cheering, hoping Newcastle is the event the Swiss superstar finally gets a Supercars race win in her Harvey Norman Nissan Altima.
Welcome, and enjoy!

KISS Exploding On-Stage and On-Track! Supercars will be lighting up the city for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 this month, and the two bands who will be rocking the stage at the event say they can’t wait to see thousands of fans file into one of the biggest concerts ever held at the No.1 Sportsground. KISS, who have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and considered to be the most influential rock band of all time, will play at the No.1 Sportsground on Saturday, November 23, 2019. The global superstars announced 12 months ago that they would play at the Newcastle Supercars event in one of just seven Australian
venues on their End of the World tour. Known for their trademark larger-than-life blistering performances, KISS has proven for decades why they are hands down the most iconic live show in rock n roll. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have said this tour is devoted to the millions of KISS Army fans. "All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who've filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years,” said KISS. “This will be the ultimate celebration for those who've seen us and a last chance for those who haven't. KISS Army, we're saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet, and we'll go out the same way we came in... unapologetic and unstoppable.” Newcastle’s very-own Screaming Jets will be the special guests. Led by Newcastle’s original frontman, Dave Gleeson who helped to form the Screaming Jets in the mid-80's, the band’s first-ever performance was at their high school, St Francis Xavier’s College, just 4km from the starting line of this year’s Coates Hire Newcastle 500. Since then the band has gone on to sell close to one million albums and most recently embarked on a Dirty Thirty Tour to celebrate 30 years of success around Australia. Gleeson says its an honour to return to the Supercars stage in 2019, especially in his home town. “Newcastle means everything, its where Pauly and I grew up, its where some of our biggest hits were written, and it will always be home,” Gleeson said. “To be on stage as opening for KISS in one of their final
ever concerts will also be something we will never forget. We can’t wait to see the fans and put on a hell of a show in November.” Fans will even get a taste of the concerts on track – when KISS will run their legendary logo and colours on the Penrite Racing Supercars of David Reynolds and Anton De Pasquale in a world-first partnership. KISS endorsed a landmark agreement for their globally celebrated KISS logo and imagery to appear on the two Penrite Racing Supercars at the Vodafone Gold Coast 600 and Newcastle 500. KISS said: “We’re thrilled to have joined with the good folk at Penrite Racing to unleash not one, but two KISS supercars. We know how fantastic Supercar racing is in Australia, so we’re honoured to be amongst it.” “We can’t wait for everyone to see the first-ever KISS Supercars,” Gene Simmons added. “KISS fans, get to the track early to cheer them on. But keep your engines running because after the race KISS is going to rock the Newcastle 500. Hope you love it loud!” Kurt Sakzewski, Supercars General Manager of Operations and Newcastle Event Manager, says this year’s concert in Newcastle will be one of the biggest Supercars has ever staged. “We’re expecting local, national and international fans to attend, given this will be KISS’s only outdoor concert in Australia with the promise of plenty of the band’s trademark pyrotechnic displays.” Tickets are still available to the event, special ONE LAST KISS or GOLD tickets are available for fans to gain access to a full day of racing and the Saturday night concert. COATES HIRE NEWCASTLE 500
Themes of NEWCASTLE Essential Ingredients for 2019 Supercars 500 WORDS Michelle Meehan
It entertains millions of people around the world with its highoctane thrills, precision passing and amazing displays of edge-ofyour-seat driving. But when the spectacle of the Newcastle 500 rolls into town this month to wrap up the 2019 Supercars season, there will be plenty more than just the on-track action for people to enjoy.
Newcastle City Council and local businesses have developed an exciting schedule of complementary activities that will be held across the central business district throughout November 21–24, with a focus on making the weekend about more than just a race. The Enjoy Newcastle campaign encourages both racegoers and locals to come in and explore what’s on offer outside of the official race precinct, allowing everyone to make the most of the festive atmosphere created by Newcastle’s largest annual sporting event.
The action will kick off on Thursday, November 21, from 4.30pm with your chance to meet a champion in Civic Park. All 26 Newcastle 500 drivers will be on hand for the free autograph signing session, giving race fans the opportunity to meet their Supercars idols in the flesh before the big race and take home their own permanent reminder of the event. A live broadcast of Fox Sports’ Trackside program will amp up the atmosphere at the park, while roving entertainment and face painting will help keep the kids entertained. Civic Park will also play host to the free Superkids Pitstop on the Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm, where children can speed down the monster truck slide, navigate their way through a fun obstacle course and take part in circus workshops, while the smallest members of the family can enjoy the dedicated under-6s zone. Family members of all ages can also join in the fun by rolling the dice on an oversized version of Newcastle’s own Monopoly board. A special edition of the world’s most famous board game was launched last month by Winning Moves, featuring Newcastle themes and locations including Newcastle, Bar and Merewether beaches; King Edward Park; Blackbutt Reserve; Fort Scratchley; Newcastle Ocean Baths; Darby Street and Hunter Street, as well as showcasing local businesses and events such as McDonald Jones Stadium and Surfest.
Head further east from the park, and you’ll find an avalanche of activities on offer in the Hunter Street Mall from 10am to 2pm all weekend. More than 70 mall traders have banded together to create an exciting two-day program that will include everything from pop-up stalls and outdoor trading to special exhibits, interactive workshops and the inaugural SuperDuper Pushcarts Challenge. Ka-fey Café owner and co-organiser Lucy Glover said the traders were keen to harness some of the excitement generated by the Supercars weekend and make the most of the street closures to encourage people back into the mall to explore its “hidden gems”. Assistance for organising the activities was received from Newcastle City Council through their Special Business Rate funding program. “All the traders are going to trade out in the mall to help showcase the carnival atmosphere, or set up a market stall with activities to make it into an interactive zone,” Lucy said.

COATES HIRE NEWCASTLE 500
“We’ve got 73 traders involved including hairdressers, clothing stores, jewellery makers, financial firms, cafes and more, there’s going to be a local dance studio doing dance showcases, a fashion show organised by the traders, workshops for the kids and an indigenous element, plus plenty more that are still being finalised. “We’re inviting all of Newcastle to come and see us and discover just what is on offer in the mall because we’ve got so many wonderful businesses who put 100 per cent in every day doing what they love and who need your support.” One of the most exciting activities taking place in Hunter Street Mall will be the inaugural Super-Duper Pushcarts Challenge.
Members of the public are invited to sign up to take part in the challenge, which will see teams of two (one pushing, one steering the kart) battle it out against each other along a special course in the mall. A number of races will be held throughout the event, with an anticipated prize pool worth around $1000 up for grabs. Racers will be able to pre-register before the event or register on the day itself, with each team asked to give a $10 donation in order to take part. All proceeds are being donated to local charities, with further details to be announced on the @superduperkarts Facebook page. Information about all the activities planned for the mall will also be available closer to the Supercars weekend on the @hunterstreetmall Facebook page. Other key events throughout the weekend will include the once-in-a-lifetime concert at No.1 Sportsground on Saturday, November 23, which will see global superstars KISS and hometown heroes Screaming Jets take to the stage for a truly epic live performance. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said there were so many opportunities for visitors and locals to get involved in the Supercars event, with activations both inside and outside of the race precinct. “I know some people are coming to Newcastle purely for the KISS concert, and others are coming for the motor racing, but there are so many activations and activities in between that provide people with opportunities to get involved,” she said. “We’ve really worked hard in developing the offerings throughout the whole of the city, that’s several kilometres worth of activations leading right up into the Civic and cultural precinct, all the way into No.1 Sportsground, the Hunter Street Mall area and the East End race precinct,” she said. “Aside from the substantive Supercars event itself for the motor racing enthusiasts, there are a lot of activities that are very family-friendly in the race precinct, and at the same time, we’re doing large family-friendly activations in the Civic Park area.
“For the last few years, we’ve also looked at how we can incorporate Smart City technology into our programming. This year we’ve seen the delivery of an autonomous vehicle that will eventually be mapped to run on streets around the East End, so there’s an activation that will take place in Wheeler Place in the city centre where people will get to sit in and try an autonomous vehicle, potentially for the first time.” Cr Nelmes said when it came to moving in between the various activations, visitors would feel the benefit of being able to use Newcastle’s light rail service this year, making it easier for people to travel both to the race precinct and explore other city centre hubs as well. Cr Nelmes said the Supercars weekend offered an amazing opportunity to showcase the city on a local, national and global scale, creating a sense of pride in their city for many Novocastrians. “That’s what a lot of the feedback after the first two events was. People really loved the way the city was showcased,” she said. “It is really showcasing us at our best, with the beautiful historic East End on show, which is being televised to such a large audience not just nationally but also internationally.
“It has put Newcastle on the map in terms of being able to host big events, and we’ve actually attracted a lot of interest from other international event organisers looking at how they can factor Newcastle into their future plans because of our success in hosting a big event like Supercars.” This is the third year Newcastle will play host to the final weekend of the Supercars Championship, representing the halfway mark in a five-year deal inked by Supercars Australia, Destination NSW and Newcastle City Council in 2016. Supercars Newcastle 500 Event Manager Kurt Sakzewski said Newcastle had provided a wonderful stage to host the final event of each year. “Newcastle has been a fantastic host city. The way the people and businesses have embraced the event is outstanding,” he said. “Right from year one, we saw local businesses adapt to meet the needs of the visiting Supercars fans and teams, and this is evolving every year. We see many return visitors to the event each year, and they’re learning more about what the region has to offer with each visit. (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) “The circuit is one of the most challenging in Australia, which leads to some exciting racing against the backdrop of the city and its beautiful beaches. “The pictures that are beamed around the world are immediately recognisable as they are like no other race track we visit.”
Kurt said the event has also been embraced by the drivers themselves, who love the closein atmosphere and technical challenges of the track. The challenging 12-turn, 2.629km circuit features fast straights and twisty corners, with three 90 degree corners and a challenging hairpin bend near Camp Shortland. Designed to be fast and tight, it takes in some of the city’s most spectacular coastal scenery including both Newcastle and Nobbys beaches and the harbour foreshore along Wharf Road. “The drivers love the proximity of the fans to the track. Believe it or not, they can hear the crowd roar when they come past,” Kurt said. “The circuit also challenges the teams in setting up their car as it has a mix of fast straights and tight twisty corners. We have only raced here twice before, so all the drivers are still working on mastering the tricky 2.6km circuit. “The Newcastle street circuit has the most elevation change of any street circuit outside of Mount Panorama in Bathurst. This creates for not only a unique racing experience for the drivers, but also gives the fans plenty of different viewing opportunities around the circuit.” Preparations for the event kicked off mid last month, and
Kurt said visitors would notice a few differences to the race precinct this year, with plenty to see on and off the track. “This year, patrons will be able to make use of the light rail service that will drop them at the Queens Wharf stop, which is only metres away from a new entry gate we’ve placed at the Western End of Market Street Lawn,” he said. “Entry via this gate will provide direct access into the event, including a great new food and beverage zone at the old Newcastle train station. As well as being a great place to grab something to eat or drink, it also provides a unique view of the cars as they exit turn one and head up Watt St. “In addition to the on-track action, we have plenty to see and do around the track with fan activations, including the Supercars Kids Zone in Pacific Park. The Australian Defence Force will once again be providing aerobatic displays on both Saturday and Sunday, which are always a highlight at our events.” While the final rounds of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship are clearly the main event for race fans, there are actually five different categories in action over the weekend including the Dunlop Super2 Series, ECB SuperUtes Series, Toyota 86 Racing Series and Aussie Racing Cars. Practice sessions for all categories will kick off from 9am on Friday, November 22. Qualifying and racing will be held on both the Saturday and Sunday between 9.20am, and 6.15pm, with the two main 250km Supercars Championship, races firing up from 4.15pm each day. SUPERCHARGE Your Visit At Hunter Distillery
WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW
Lemon myrtle vodka. Turkish delight liqueur. Magical, colour-changing gin. These aren’t the kinds of spirits you’ll find at your everyday bottle shop – but you will find them (and plenty more) at a little place called Hunter Distillery. And if you’re in town for Supercars, then this might just be the perfect side-excursion to make your trip a memorable one. For those who like to branch out with their evening tipple, or who are keen to try their hand at making interesting cocktails at home, Hunter Distillery is a dream destination. Starting as a licenced backyard project back in the early 2000's, the Distillery began its journey with the production of just five vodkas. Dubbed Valli Vodkas, these limited-edition spirits were originally produced in small quantities for the wholesale market. But the name rose to prominence after Valli Vodkas began bringing in international recognition, winning gold in the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition and silver at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition. After such success, it was a natural decision to expand into a state-of-the-art distillery, tucked away amidst the wineries along Broke Road in Pokolbin. Since opening to the public in 2012, the Distillery has expanded in size, scope and offering. The original Valli Vodkas paved the way for the premium organic vodka range the Distillery is now renowned for, and various gins, liqueurs and schnapps have been added to the mix. “It’s grown dramatically,” says Neil Langdon, Hunter Distillery’s Sales and Customer Relations Manager. “It’s gone from just the five vodkas to now five gins, about ten vodkas, about 15 liqueurs and schnapps, and some other specialty spirits.
*While stocks last.
We started off with just one tasting bar; we’re now up to two very big public tasting bars and two group-booking tasting bars. And we’re still growing.” “The tasting area is in the same building as the production area, so you can actually see the stills and the bottling line and everything from the tasting area,” Neil explains. From the moment you walk in for a $5 tasting experience, you’ll understand the Distillery’s unique appeal. The list of spirits available is extensive and often unusual (did someone say chilli schnapps? Caramel vodka? Choc-mint liqueur?). And when you finally decide what you’d like to try, your samples are offered not in glasses, but in test tubes. “It’s a unique thing that we do for a couple of reasons,” says Neil. “It’s a point of difference, but the main reason is that it is straight spirits, so this way you get to try a couple of flavours, and we stay within RSA guidelines!” The test-tube tasting experience isn’t the only thing that makes the venue distinctive. It’s also the only 100% organic distillery in the Hunter, and its processes are different from those of many other distilleries. “We make our own spirit,” Neil explains. “A lot of distilleries buy in the spirit and then make their products from that, but we actually make ours from scratch. We do the equivalent of five times distilling, so we’re able to remove a lot more of the nasty alcohols – there’s basically none of that burn that goes all the way down. It’s a very clean, polished spirit.” Hunter Distillery’s range of boutique products is only available online or at the Distillery itself. But if you find you just can’t get enough, you can also join the Spirit Club and receive a 15% discount on all purchases, including two six-packs of 500ml bottles delivered in May and November each year. You’ll also have exclusive first access to new products, and possibly even special events such as members’ nights down the track… Bottoms up, we say. Visit www.hunterdistillery.com.au to shop online or nip in for a test-tube tasting at 1686 Broke Road, Pokolbin.

CLARITY…
The State of Being Clear and Transparent
Clarity Imaging is an independent, locally owned and operated Radiology practice providing personalised imaging services that are individually tailored to patients of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, with clinics in Cessnock and Waratah. The first clinic at 1 Cessnock Street, Cessnock, was opened six years ago by a group of Radiologists from the John Hunter Hospital who wanted to bring their sub-speciality expertise from the hospital to the community, including musculoskeletal/sports imaging, pain management and paediatric radiology.
After successfully increasing the much-needed level of medical services and radiology expertise to the Hunter Valley, a new flagship clinic was opened in January 2019 in the Newcastle area. Clarity Waratah is located on the ground floor at 182 Christo Road, Waratah, the site of the Newcastle Eye Hospital redevelopment. It is a brand new clinic with a welcoming modern and tasteful fit-out of the highest specifications. There is ample off-street parking, is conveniently serviced by a bus stop and easy access for wheelchairs. Comprehensive radiology services are provided at Clarity Waratah with new state-of-the-art equipment including digital X-ray, dental imaging, ultrasound and dual-energy CT. The GE dual-energy CT scanner is amongst the first of its kind in Australia and enables the radiologists to analyse and diagnose with greater accuracy and confidence pathologies such as tumours, bone injuries, gout and renal stones. Furthermore, such advanced technology is at no extra cost to patients as there is a belief at Clarity that all patients should have access to the highest standard of diagnostic imaging and hence all Medicare-eligible X-ray, CT and ultrasound examinations are bulk-billed. Also performed and bulk-billed at the practice are interventional procedures such as ultrasound-guided injections and CT guided spinal injections for pain relief, along with fine needle and core biopsies. Clarity Waratah also offers MRI scanning. The MRI suite has a backlit LED ceiling which gives the illusion of lying under a leafy tree on a sunny day! Along with the widest tunnel diameter available, the MRI scanner is well suited to those patients who suffer from claustrophobia, or have felt so previously in other scanners. The team at Clarity
aim to provide the most comfortable and relaxing patient experience, not just in the MRI suite, but throughout the entire clinic. INVEST in
YOURSELF! WORDS NICOLE JANSON – Membership Consultant, Planet Fitness Charlestown
Investing in yourself is probably one of the best investments you can make. Whether it’s investing in learning a new skill, developing yourself personally or professionally, tapping into your creativity or even hiring a coach, you’ll receive a great return on investment. You must first give to yourself, learn to love yourself, take the time and the responsibility to develop as a human, all your gifts and talents, to be the best versions of yourself. Remember F.L.Y – First Love Yourself! With our busy lifestyles and the constant outside/social influences and expectations, this can be difficult. So – let’s start with motivation. Motivation is difficult to maintain, so here are my ten tips to keep it going! 1. Set goals and be specific! Start with a goal – e.g. lose 10kgs or 'tone up'. Then set a timeline to achieve this by, this keeps you accountable. 2. Get an exercise training plan. Whether you are a beginner or have been training for a while, make a plan! Write down your sessions, speak with a trainer or mentor, get as much advice as possible (google is always helpful). 3. Be careful of overtraining. Don’t overdo it! Listen to your body; if you are feeling sore, tired or run down, REST and RECOVER!

4. Adopt exercise role models. This explains itself, choose your favourite influencer, print out pictures, quotes, stick them around your house, at your workplace anywhere that you will see them. Social media - Start filling your feed with positive people with similar interest and goals. 5. Record your progress. Keep track of how far you’ve come; sometimes you forget to pause and take a look at what you have already achieved, be proud! 6. Cross-train. Change it up! Try something new, be spicy! 7. Go shopping. Let’s get real, who doesn’t feel good in new activewear?! Treat yourself – You deserve it. 8. Have a treat. Remember to slip in a treat once a week; try not to completely cut out your favourites. 9. Track yourself with technology or an app. There are so many cool devices to track yourself with, a watch, or an app on your phone. 10. Visualise! Remember to see yourself, your best self, crossing that line and smashing your goal! Believe in yourself, and you can achieve anything! Then fuel your body Fuelling your body isn’t just nutrition/dieting, although a good diet filled with yummy, nutrient-rich foods can make a world of difference. When you focus on eating organic and healthier choices, you will feel better – it’s proven, and you’ll have more energy! Who doesn’t want that? If you’re like me, that yummy looking burger or doughnut (doughnuts are my weakness) will provide instant gratification, but leave you feeling guilty. Schedule that cheat day, so you’re not missing out! What you read, what you listen to, what you watch, who you surround yourself with – these are all examples of ‘fuel.’ Train your mind, challenge yourself, and if you’re unsure about something, then educate yourself. Read that book, read that article, watch that documentary, listen to a podcast, attend that seminar or workshop. It’s also important who you let into your circle, your sanctuary. After all – you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Time is priceless Use your time wisely – it’s valuable, it’s free, and it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it; you can’t keep it, but you can spend it, and once you have used it or lost it, you can never get it back. Time is precious, never waste a second and use your time wisely! Do things that make you happy that improve your worth, your net value, that fill up your cup. Remember F.L.Y – First Love Yourself!

Imagine Being Free of Fears and Phobias WORDS BRETT CAMERON - Cameron Hypnotics
Is there a phobia that you would like to leave in the past? Imagine being free of that phobia and not having to plan your life around that fear. What is the difference between a fear and a phobia? A fear is a natural response to a threat or perceived danger. The response to fear creates a metabolic change within the body, as chemicals and hormones are released to stimulate the person to either freeze, flight or lastly to fight. Fear is a primal response ensuring that you can move to a position of safety. A phobia is an irrational fear that can cause avoidance or panic. It becomes a learned response and can lead to anticipatory anxiety, where the person exhibits anxious behaviour in anticipation of an event or stimulant.
Some of the fears that hold people back are a fear of flying; a fear of dogs; a fear of snakes or spiders (or both – OK that is very common), a fear of confined spaces; a fear of ‘Missing Out’ (FOMO) and a fear of cotton wool (just to show that there are some obscure fears!) The best way to demonstrate the effectiveness of Hypnotherapy in desensitising the emotional response to that fear is with real case scenarios. One client had an unexplained fear of dogs. She had never been bitten or attacked by a dog, and at the age of 50, has no memory of ever touching a dog. If a small dog was on the footpath (even leashed), she would still have to walk onto the road to get around the dog, or else experience a panic attack. In our post hypnosis discussion, the client revealed a memory from the age of three that came to her. She was trying to feed a snarling dog through a fence. At the time, she didn’t sense danger. Her mother walked around the corner and upon finding her daughter, she screamed. This startled the child. I asked the client why she was smiling. She replied, “I should have been afraid of my mother, not the dog.” I would suggest that at an unconscious level, her three-year-old self has taken a screenshot of the dog and has attached ‘fear’. Every time she sees a dog, she experiences fear. Thankfully, she is now free of that fear. Another client has said, “Amazing results for my crippling fear of heights, bridges and flying. After only one session, I have driven over the Stockton bridge for the first time in 7 years, and I did this with no anxiety.” This client is already rewiring her brain with new positive neurology. Have you ever considered answering the question, what is a thought?” It is perhaps one of the most difficult questions to answer. We have to beware of thoughts. A thought can lead to words, which become actions, which in turn become habits and behaviours, and this all started with a random thought. In the case of anxiety, a thought leads to a feeling, which confirms the thought. In essence, we have created a neurological loop. So what do you do with those erroneous thoughts? We say in a repeating mantra “this brain is having a thought, this brain is having a thought…” Countless clients over the years have reported that, as weird as it seems, it works! The mantra is not a guarantee against phobias, but it could be a positive and empowering start as you bring back a sense of calm control. teeth for life is: Avoid cutting away your teeth unnecessarily! It is simple – but it requires a significant change in mindset.
Keeping your Teeth FOR LIFE WORDS ALEX HUSZTI - BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on low-biologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
One of the most common concerns raised by patients in my practice is ‘How do I keep my teeth into old age and avoid dentures?’ This patient concern has been the major contributing factor in the development of my restorative dental care. As a dentist, the best way I can help you keep your
Most importantly, every medical/dental intervention carries three different COSTS: An emotional cost associated with undergoing a procedure; a financial cost associated with the procedure and lastly, the cost that is most often overlooked – the biological cost of the procedure. Most interventions involve some loss of your tissues -an irreplaceable loss. Therefore the biologic cost of dental care has the potential to carry the highest price you will pay. Secondly, people often ask ‘how long will this restoration last?’ Good question. But a more pertinent question may be: ‘how much tooth are you cutting away, and is the restoration repairable?’ Some restorations, such as conventional ceramic crowns, carry a high biologic cost (i.e. a lot of sound tooth is cut away needlessly) as well as being impossible or very difficult to repair. They may last somewhat longer, but when they fail, the tooth is at risk of being lost. Composite resin crowns (large fillings) have an undeservedly poor reputation. If fillings and composite resin crowns are placed with care and skill, they have the potential to last some decades. And if they do develop problems, they can be effectively repaired without having to undo the whole restoration. This lowers the biologic cost of the restoration, not only at the initial placement but also as the restoration is maintained over time. We’re living longer than ever before, in an age where everything is becoming disposable. It is time that we instituted more repairability – dental care is an excellent candidate for this kind of thinking.
Finally, a little strategy goes a very long way. If you want to keep your teeth for life, you need a strategy to deliver teeth for life. A fundamental strategy is to start all treatment with the simplest, lowest biologic cost interventions and persevere with the least aggressive strategies for as many restorative cycles as possible. Only move onto a more aggressive strategy once you have exhausted simple ones. This has the effect of delaying higher biologic cost interventions and not only is this more conservative of your finite tooth structure, but it also has a relatively lower financial cost (when you compare ‘apples to apples’). Higher biologic cost treatments early in a patient’s dental lifecycle accelerate the loss of tooth structure and accelerate the rate at which future treatment cycles become increasingly aggressive and expensive. As patients being treated with this approach age, sometimes we will engage in managed tooth loss. As patients’ get older, ‘the ravages of time’ may present themselves. Prioritising the importance of teeth as well as discussing the prognosis of certain teeth is beneficial. By patients understanding the relative importance of teeth, they can conserve funds for the teeth that are important to their function and cosmetics without the need to needlessly waste money on teeth that are a relatively ‘poor bet’. Each patient needs to have their own unique plan around this – one that they understand and are comfortable with. It’s not good to lose teeth, so at least know which teeth you want to pursue and which teeth you can spare. Sometimes, it is in these instances, where a key tooth is lost as a consequence of being unsalvageable or a ‘poor bet’, that the funds saved from simply extracting non-critical teeth in the past, can be re-invested into an implant crown to replace the key tooth.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.

Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)

Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

LIVE YOUR LIST
Reliving
Family History WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON - Live Your Bucket List
Growing up, this Booragul artist would sit mesmerised as her Dad told stories of his homeland and life in Holland during World War Two. It seemed so far removed from her life and more like her favourite television show Hogan’s Heroes. In July 2011, Kim van Koeverden set out on a six-week European tour that included a 16-day trip to Holland to retrace her Dad’s Dutch life. “It was a monumental life-changing experience, other than having my children; there has been nothing bigger in my life. Dad had passed away, so it was incredibly emotional and intense, but I loved every minute of it.” Kim had been planning the Holland journey most of her life. She carried a notebook that listed the names of relatives she wished to meet, the places to stay, and things to do. Her father Cornelius was one of 16 children, so her extended family was large. When she arrived in Holland, she was met at the airport by a football team of aunts, uncles and cousins. “They welcomed me with open arms as if we had never been apart, then took me straight to a party in my honour.” At the gathering, they asked Kim about her itinerary, and she handed over the notebook. By the night’s end, each entry had a ‘tour guide’ name against it. “On top of my list was to stay at Dad’s childhood home and meet as many relatives as possible and hear their stories.” Con had grown up on a dairy farm in Buurmalsen and lived in a heritage homestead with a thatched roof that people from all over the world came to paint and still do.
Kim Van Koeverden with her cousin Harriet in Volendam.
Kim (centre) with her cousins.
“I slept in Dad’s room and relived his life through family members’ memories. I also cycled through the dairy countryside, along the canals and past old windmills. It was magical.” During WWII, the family home was taken over by German soldiers, who used it as a stopover on their way to the front. Con’s elderly parents stayed in the home with three daughters who lived in the attic. Some of the boys had gone to fight, and the remaining children were sent to work in camps. However, Con being a baker, was spared and remained in Holland as an essential services worker. He ended up being recruited by the Dutch resistance. “Dad would tell me about being a spy with a bow-tie camera and hiding a gun in a bible.” While staying with the family, Kim went to a museum dedicated to the resistance, and there was Con’s photo and the intelligence equipment he had described. “It was all real and not a Hogan’s Heroes fantasy – I felt very proud.” She has many memories from this trip, and it has only cemented a wish to go and live in Holland for a year. Kim has already started her next bucket-list item, which is lessons in learning conversational Dutch. It will join her other ticks that include a biplane ride; owning a vintage car; scuba diving with sharks in Vanuatu; and visiting Arnhem land where she bought an original artwork. She still has plenty to do: travel to India; a solo art exhibition; creating a large public interactive kinetic sculpture, and writing her father’s story. “Dad was my hero. I needed to go and see where he had lived and find my roots. I am so glad I did, as it made me feel whole by filling in the gaps of who I am. I felt a connection with my Dutch family and built loving relationships that will last my lifetime.”

Save Money and Time with a Professional Designer WORDS LARA O'DONNELL - Tailored HQ
Many people are intimidated by the idea of hiring an Interior Designer or think that it’s a ‘luxury’ investment. However, the reality is that hiring a professional may be one of the smartest decisions you can make. By utilising the skills of a trained professional, you can save yourself two of life’s most sought after commodities: time and money. It might seem counter-intuitive that you would save money when having to pay the additional design fee, but the truth is that hiring a designer can help you avoid costly mistakes. Here are the five biggest mistakes that Interior Designers can help you avoid: 1. Diving in head-first without a plan – Have you ever bought a piece of furniture that you absolutely loved the look of in the store, only to realise that it’s too big (or small) once you got it home? Ever painted numerous swatches trying to find the ideal colour? A designer has a trained eye that can help create a cohesive space. While you don’t have to go overboard and have everything completely matching, everything must make sense together. Interior designers are trained to know what will work and can provide you with the confidence that your entire home will be carefully considered and beautifully curated. 2. Incorrect scale – We see time and again in clients’ homes, the result of them failing to have measured their space and/or pay attention to the dimensions and scale of the objects they’re choosing before purchase. Scale and proportion are arguably the most critical aspects of Interior Design. For example, we commonly see people making the mistake of choosing a rug that’s too small, or a sofa that’s too large for the spaces they’re intended. Another common mistake is selecting all of your furniture and furnishings to sit at the same level. An area needs to resemble a city skyline - there should be objects of numerous heights, shapes and sizes, that come together to form one cohesive idea. 3. Incorrect placement of artwork – Too often we see a beautiful space that’s marred by the artwork being hung too high
or in the wrong location. Remember that an artwork does not always have to be centred or stand-alone. The temptation is to have art centred, even though offset on the wall will make it stand out even more, and suit the space it’s in. Don’t be afraid to be asymmetrical! Often the ideal position is an unexpected one. For example, your Interior Designer may suggest hanging the artwork over a side table and have it partially obscured by a lamp or a stack of books or other accessory items. This layered approach might seem slightly unusual but is exponentially more effective in providing depth to your space. 4. Following Design trends that will date – It’s so easy to base your design purely on what’s currently on-trend. While it’s great to have your finger on the pulse and incorporate elements of what’s ‘cool’ right now, it’s important to remember that trends are fluid and transient. What’s currently trending on Pinterest and on The Block will quickly change and evolve to the next biggest trend. Interior designers are aware of the forward momentum and can save you from the trap of basing your entire design on one single movement, as it will inevitably date faster than you can say ‘I wish I hired an Interior Designer’. 5. Shying away from investment pieces – It’s easy to understand the caution related to spending significant amounts of money on investment pieces. As mentioned previously, as with all areas of design, trends come and go, and it’s inevitable that this years ‘must-have’ pieces will not be so desired next year. But that doesn’t always need to be true. Fewer, high-quality investment pieces are, in my opinion, far more favourable than multiple inexpensive items that have to be replaced regularly. So how do you know what pieces are worthy of your investment? That’s where an Interior Designer can help you! Design trends are cyclical; we often see them repeating throughout history. By considering the form and functionality of key pieces, an interior designer can help you chose classic styles that have been proven to stand the test of time.

Streamlining the Building Process for a Better Outcome Understanding where to start on the building journey is pivotal to ensuring successful completion. It can all be a bit daunting, and there’s no doubt that using a professional builder with an established step by step process can take a lot of the stress away from you (just ask the guys from The Block!) With this in mind, this month we spoke to Chris Walkom of Walkom Constructions to find out what are the essential steps in the building process to ensure the project comes in on time, on budget and is an enjoyable process for the homeowner. Chris says that the process they have developed and use has also been streamlined to help, homeowners get through the build faster – so it’s a win-win for all involved. Here, Chris outlines the Walkom 7-Step Process. 1. INITIAL CONSULTATION I personally meet with you onsite to discuss your tailored design requirements and do a site inspection. I will offer my professional advice and advise you of any foreseeable costs and concerns associated with the site which you may not have considered or accounted for. I will then put forward the best way to proceed from here and clarify any questions you may have. This is a crucial step in the process, and one often missed, you must get the first step in the right direction or else you’ll end up in the wrong place! 2. CONCEPT DRAWINGS Concept drawings are prepared around the information given on our first consultation. Once you’re 100% happy with the design, an estimate is then worked through to ensure we are working within your budget so you can decide on the design. During this time, you may also be interested in a consultation with an interior designer to discuss the custom decorative features that turn your project into your home.
3. ONLINE ACCESS Your project information will be added to our 24/7 online client access system from our website for you to access and view online product selections and the preliminary construction stages of your project. 4. CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS Construction drawings are completed so that they can be submitted for approval. At this stage, we detail a specification to suit your home, which enables us to calculate and offer a fixed price proposal. Once a proposal is agreed, a HIA Building contract is written up. 5. LETS BUILD We organise council approvals and are with you every step of the way during your project. You will continue to have 24/7 online access to your project, so you know exactly what’s happening next and have full control of your project from start to finish. 6. HANDOVER Here’s the finishing part, we will show you through your finished home to ensure you are 100% satisfied. We will also pass on our warranties book with your 72 Month Structural Warranty and 6 Month General Defect Warranty. Enjoy your newly built home and thanks for building with us! 7. SUPPORT We will always be contactable if you have any questions to ask us, we offer a warranty which is above industry standards, and we love to keep in contact to hear how much you enjoy your home! Chris Walkom is the owner of Walkom Constructions, based in Newcastle. Walkom specialises in renovations and extensions, offering personal and professional services to ensure clients needs are met every time. Visit www.walkomconstructions.com.au for more info.

Jetmaster Newcastle
Period Architectural
Specialists! WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW
Jetmaster Newcastle is well known for their extensive range of premium fireplace products. Offering a start-to-finish service, they’ll provide everything from initial design to completed fireplace installation. But did you know they’re also the region’s premier supplier of period architectural hardware and accessories? When it comes to period styling, the devil really is in the details. Whether you’re restoring the interior of an old building to its former glory, styling a new property with a period feel, or striking the right balance between modernity and historic charm, fittings and fixtures deserve just as much
attention as major architectural elements. Functionally, there are some traditional hardware aspects that just can’t be replaced with modern alternatives. And aesthetically, the amount of difference that can be made by just the right antique copper doorknob or brass light switch is often quite surprising. This is where the period architectural hardware department of Jetstar Newcastle comes in. For over ten years, Jetmaster has been the go-to local destination for period interior styling and home restoration projects. At the expansive Adamstown showroom, you’ll discover all the fittings your period or Federation-style home requires. We’re talking everything from traditional door, window and cabinet hardware to brass accents, pressed metal panels, unique glass and ceramic doorknobs, and more. It’s easy to see why Jetmaster has been a long-time favourite with local builders, cabinet-makers, kitchen designers and architects, as well as the home DIY crowd. Robin Hastings, owner of Jetmaster Newcastle, says there’s a real resurgence in the market for these kinds of architectural hardware products. “When renovating – especially in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, where there are a lot of older homes – people are trying to strike that balance of updating their residences without losing the charm and historical aspect of their home, he explains. “That’s where we come in, providing advice and an extensive range of products. And the range certainly is extensive. Browsing the Jetmaster catalogue online or in person at the showroom, you’ll find a huge range of meticulously crafted reproductions of authentic originals collected from around Australia. There are period door and cabinetry fittings in materials ranging from brass and antique copper to chrome, iron and porcelain.
Traditional window accessories, house name signs, period tiles, heritage-style Bakelite electrical outlets and switches, and other hardware sundries all offer the unique touch you might be looking for. Basically, it’s a complete treasure trove for anyone with a passion for authentic period styling. Jetmaster’s architectural hardware products also include a popular range of pressed tin sheeting and accessories. Patterns based on original early Australian designs are faithfully reproduced in mill-finish aluminium, which has been treated to accept either powder coating or paint. But if all this sounds a little overwhelming to you, don’t worry – the Jetmaster team is here to offer expert advice on every part of the process, from pattern selection to installation to ongoing maintenance. “Our pressed tin range has become increasingly popular the last couple of years as people find all-new ways to incorporate it into their homes – not only as a traditional ceiling panel but as a design feature such as a kitchen, laundry or bathroom splashback, a feature wall or even a bedhead, Robin explains. “The range of pressed tin can be powder-coated to your specifications and, of course, Jetmaster can organise skilled tradespeople to carry out all your installations. No matter what kind of project you’re undertaking, the Jetmaster process really couldn’t be more simple. All you need to do is chat to the friendly team, who will talk you through your options and help you breathe life into your interior styling vision. The Jetmaster Newcastle showroom at 334 Brunker Road, Adamstown, is open 9am–5pm Monday to Friday and 9am–1pm Saturdays. Leads the Way with Smart City Infrastructure An advanced network of sensors spread across the city has put Newcastle on the front foot to combat a range of local environmental issues. The City’s ‘Envirosensing’ network and Internet of Things (IoT) project, which was officially launched last month, is the culmination of three years of work to build one of the most advanced smart city infrastructure systems in Australia. The system is designed to measure a range of environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, wind direction, air quality, water usage, soil moisture and solar irradiance. deployment of smart bin sensors, smart parking sensors and other smart city applications. Data collected by the sensors can help the City better understand and respond to issues such as urban heat island effect, air pollution, flood management and water sustainability, as well as monitor the performance of urban systems and assets. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle is leading the way when it comes to investment in and uptake of technology. “The launch is a significant milestone, marking the completion of the base infrastructure required to start deploying applications that not only solve the city’s challenges but also harness exciting opportunities,” Cr Nelmes said. The NSW Government supported the deployment of smart city infrastructure through a $5 million grant via the Restart NSW-funded Hunter Innovation Project. A partnership with the State Government will see the City of Newcastle invest an additional $2 million over three years.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Transform Your Dreams to Reality with
Smith & Sons! WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW
Home renovations can be equal parts exciting and stressful. Yes, a full renovation or extension project gives you the chance to live in your dream home (what’s more exciting than that?). But first, the project actually has to be designed, planned and completed (hence the stress). The only way to really ensure you’ll get the renovation results you want – without sending stress levels sky-rocketing – is to bring in the professionals. And there’s no one more professional than the team at Smith & Sons Newcastle. Owned by builder Tim Bates and designer Sally Royal, Smith & Sons Newcastle is there for every kind of customer – from those just beginning to think about a potential renovation, to those with a full set of plans who just need the right builder for the job. Tim has spent 20 years in the building industry, while Sally has 15 years of design experience in the retail market and has spent the past ten years in building design. So it’s no surprise that their combined expertise leads to outstanding results. Supported by a talented team of local suppliers and professional licenced tradespeople, Tim and Sally can guide you through any number of projects – from full home renovations and extensions to
bathrooms, kitchens and decks, and much more. So what exactly can you expect when engaging the Smith & Sons team to make your renovation dreams a reality? “Clients can expect a local couple who are very much focused on delivering exceptional quality,” Sally says. “Tim and I review and discuss every aspect of each client’s project; every project is different. While we have been building for a long time, we are always learning and looking for better ways to provide the best quality outcome for our clients.” Smith & Sons’ tried-and-tested threestep renovation process is designed to ensure you and your home are taken care of from start to finish. Step one is Design: a collaborative phase where your renovation goals and dreams are transformed into pen-and-paper reality. Tim and Sally take every aspect of your home and lifestyle into account, sitting down with you to discuss ideas, designs, materials, colours and every other possible detail to ensure your new space will be picture-perfect. Sally explains: “We ask specific questions – why do you want to renovate? What was your driver? What type of building improvement are you looking for? What do you like about the home currently? What is your inspiration – Hamptons, mid-century modern, coastal? Or is it a practical necessity, such as needing more space for a new baby, or needing a granny flat because your parents are coming to live with you?” After initial discussions, it’s on to step two: Plan. This is where things get technical, ensuring the proposed construction will be strong, safe, compliant and within budget. “We like to work with clients to ensure their vision can be delivered within their budget. Our estimating system is comprehensive, and specifications are very detailed,” Sally explains. “For some clients, this is a oncein-a-lifetime adventure, or they have saved up a long time to do their renovation, and we respect that. We like to deliver well at every stage of a project, and it starts by providing a detailed execution brief and specifications.” After this, it’s time for the last and most exciting step: Construct! This is the moment you’ve been waiting for – design and planning coming to life as the construction process kicks off. “Tim is technically driven and always focused on quality execution,” Sally says. “For me, it’s about getting onsite and working with our trades to ensure the finish I want for our clients is delivered – they are going to use the finished product every day, and it should be a delight.” If you’re ready to take the leap and transform your home with the help of Smith & Sons, call 0439 304 645, email newcastle@smith-sons.com.au, or head to www.smithandsons.com.au for more information.

Hunter Manufacturing Awards Night The Hunter Manufacturing Awards Inc. Appreciation and thanks were extended to Downer, Major Sponsor for the 12th year. Without companies such as Downer, it would be difficult for HMA to continue to provide the recognition our Region’s manufacturers deserve.

ON TOUR WITH THE KID
Back to Bondi WORDS CHLOE O'SULLIVAN
I recently had to head to Bondi Beach for a work thing and being school holidays it was the perfect opportunity to take the kid to see one of Australia’s most iconic destinations. We booked accommodation the night before we left so weren’t expecting anything special. We were, however, thrilled to find an absolute gem. We arrived at our destination, The Baxley Bondi. Just a few doors up from Bondi Road which would lead us straight to the Beach in the morning. We found a parking spot on the street out the front on the very pretty Flood Street and stepped inside the gate to a perfectly landscaped oasis. The stunning grey and white two-story homestead stood out from the surrounding urban backdrop. The boutique hotel was gorgeous inside and out — quality linen and luxury that enveloped the whole space. We walked hand in hand down Bondi Road and passed Waverley Oval to

grab some Thai food for dinner and smiled when I saw a painting of Patrick Swayze’s face with Bodhi written below. A homage to the surf or die lifestyle near one of the most well-known beaches in the world seemed very fitting. I tried to explain Point Break to my girl, and I felt old. When I told my baby, it came out 28 years ago I felt like I was explaining the plot of a Cary Grant film that I’d seen in black and white. We woke early the next morning and headed down to meet the Sunrise crew, Shannon Noll and John Forman. John was there to talk about the music program he runs called Count Us In and Shannon was there to talk about his new single, Long Live the Summer, which couldn’t have been more appropriate given the weather that Bondi had turned on for us that day.
The sun was out, the waves were perfect, and there were even a couple of whales close enough to see from the shore. Being a self-confessed introvert, I tend to avoid anywhere that is described as iconic, particularly during the holidays. Crazy traffic, too many people and scenes from Bondi Rescue is the picture I had in my head. That morning though was peaceful and calm. We strolled over to Lush on Bondi for breakfast. Fruit salad and waffles seemed like the perfect end to the morning. I love to people watch; I could do it all day. As we sat watching the world go by, I thought back to growing up in the country and what a treat it was to get to the beach. Now that we live so close, I don’t get there nearly as much as I should. You get busy with work and one thing or another; the weekends just fly by. I looked down at my baby girl. She already feels so grown up. I only have ten summers before she is an adult. Ten summers before she is off doing her own thing and starting her own life. Ten summers if I’m lucky. I vowed at that moment not to waste any more time worrying about crowds and traffic but to focus on the memories we are making by going to that special place. I know lots of people aim to head overseas, but we live in one of the most amazing and diverse countries on earth. Make sure you find your way to the iconic spots on your own doorstep.
