Sporting Soccer
O
n a recent scorching hot morning at the local YMCA, I realized a potential titanic shift in what sports people are becoming interested in. This epiphany was on a summer day you might expect to see kids out of school playing baseball or pick-up basketball or even throwing around a football. Instead, parents were watching their kids playing soccer. A divergent group of Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian and African-American parents, sat under umbrellas while cheering their children’s youthful engagement. I could only imagine the havoc Bo Jackson would have wreaked on a soccer field. It has been said for awhile that soccer is the next big thing in sport. The rapid growth of soccer in Houston can mostly be attributed to the Mexican, South and Central American population, as well as the Euros. But, recently on a brutally hot day, the Houston Dynamo packed the downtown BBVA Compass stadium playing a team from New York called the Red Bulls, and young adult fans of all nationalities were well represented.There are large and relatively small market teams such as the LA Galaxy, D.C. United and recent league champs, Sporting Kansas City. Just the names should pique your interest. It certainly appears the next generation will contribute to the fledgling Major League Soccer’s growth. American football, baseball, and basketball beware.

Medical Advances There are a lot of recent medical developments, many spawned in Houston, which seems to be at the center of a lot of things these days. The local doctor who has started a virtual office visit via your home computer may be changing the future of doctor’s office visits. Time will tell. Redevelopment Trend Hopefully, a recent trend to renovate some premier existing Houston properties instead of tearing them down will help keep some of Houston’s past intact. There are a couple of local architectural firms making a statement for renovating and possibly a precursor for future projects.

I enjoyed your article in the most recent Intown, "Let's Put Our City On The Cinema Map". I agree with you 100% that there should be much more PUTTING film production in Houston, HOUSTON ON THE and it is a mystery as to why CINEMAMAP PUTTING there's not more. Houston is HOUSTON ON THE vibrant in the arts, has fantastic CINEMA MAP settings and is definitely making waves in the professional sports world as well. Another thing to consider is why doesn't the WHO'S WHO IN MEDICINE HEALTHY EATERIES great Hollywood back more MOON SHOTS UPDATE projects shot on location here? BOOT CAMP TRAINING Seems like every time they've done it, it's been a major hit (Urban Cowboy, Reality Bites, Terms Of Endearment, Apollo 13, Space Cowboys, Friday Night Lights, etc., etc., etc.). I myself am in a Houston-based screenwriting group with two other gentlemen, and we are trained in the Hollywood style. We've won both major film festivals in Houston two of the past three years. Our comedy script Angry Man, which takes place in Houston, won the Gulf Coast Film Festival in 2012, and our historical, true story biopic Appointment In Jerusalem won WorldFest just this past year. However, it seems like we can't get anyone in Hollywood OR Houston to read or even consider our material. While I do expect it from Hollywood, although it seems like they've become even more difficult to permeate since about 2008, I didn't expect it from Houston. People here were very enthusiastic when we first won these festivals and acted like something was going to happen. Then everything went from positive to negative. Don't understand it. So we've got some excellent, Hollywood-covered, major Film Festival award-winning, Houston-based material - and have no idea why nothing is being done with it. It's a mystery. A Houston arts pioneer, Anne Wilkes Tucker, founding Curator of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is retiring having led the Department since 1976. Tucker, as founding Curator of the MFAH Photography Department, has built one of the world’s leading collections.
photography at MFAH, collectors and artists generously donated gifts to the Museum’s permanent collection. A selection of these gifts will be on display in the exhibition In Appreciation: Gifts in Honor of Anne Wilkes Tucker, on view from June 23 to October 11, 2015.

s early as 2007, then Texas Governor Rick Perry made a controversial decision ordering all young girls in the state to get a vaccine against a virus that could cause cervical cancer. According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, affecting more than 79 million people.
Intown caught up with Dr. Ramondetta after a recent summit at MD Anderson on HPV - related diseases.

I Are there other ways to prevent infection from the virus? DR. Condoms may help but are not foolproof. Skin to skin contact -- eg 1st base, second base and third base -- can lead to infections. Intercourse not required. I Can you still contract the virus if you have been vaccinated? DR. The most recent vaccine protects against 9 sub types so infection by other high-risk types is possible, but rare. The other vaccines only prevent 2 or 4 subtypes so yes, you can get cancer from other subtypes. Also, at this point, the best coverage is from all three shots given before intown 17

would have done anyway. JG: So it doesn’t change your opinion on Tom Brady at all? BC: No, it doesn’t. No, it really doesn’t. I think he’s a great quarterback and there’s a lot more that goes into it than a grip on a football. So I think he’s an awesome player, a great competitor, and one of the best, if not the best, quarterback of all time. JG: Let’s talk about your situation, I know you had some surgeries in the offseason. How are you feeling heading into 2015? BC: Probably the best I have in a while. I’m just looking forward to getting back and playing my style of football; relentless, fast, competitive, fearless and healthy most importantly. This is the best I’ve felt in a couple of years. So yeah, very excited about the year coming up.

Jason Goch: Let’s talk about your football camps that are going on in the Houston area. Brian Cushing: Yeah I got a youth camp going on right now at Conroe High School, for just any local kids in the area come out for a two days camp put on by Kroger and Kolache Factory, two of the big sponsors that I’m fortunate enough to have. Did the same thing last year and the whole thing is run by ProCamp and I’m just looking forward to having two great days coming out for the kids. JG: And where can find details about that? Being a player in the league who competes against the New England Patriots, what were your thoughts on the entire scandal and the Wells report that came out? BC: You know, I’m not really sure. I think if I was an offensive player or even quarterback, I’d have more of an opinion on it. You know I probably wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference with the ball being deflated, but that’s just me. You know I think that New England is a hell of a football team and I don’t really think it changed much of what they
JG: Talk about what your coach, Bill O’Brien, brought to the table in his first season. Obviously he comes from the Patriots system and you guys made a tremendous improvement in 2014 as opposed to 2013. What made the team better last year, and how was coach O’Brien involved with that? BC: Well I think first and foremost he’s a great offensive lineman coach, and not only that, he’s a tough-minded coach. He wants results; the most important thing to him is winning.
JC: Let’s talk about the outlook for this year’s team, obviously a tough division, the Colts are on the rise, you guys are on the rise; what’s the outlook for this year’s Texans team? BC: Well I think we’re on the rise too, it’s kind of just the mindset you have, up and coming football team. I’m very excited about the challenge ahead of us and the schedule of the season ahead of us. Looking forward of the improvement of our record at the end of the playoffs.

What do you think Brian’s gonna bring to your team? BC: I think he’s a cool guy; he’s a smart guy; he’s very familiar with the system here. So I think it’ll be a very competitive battle. I think both guys obviously want the starting job. So whoever wins that I think will do a great job for it. JC: I think a lot of listeners look at your defense and they think that’s a defense on the come. And they look at somebody like J.J. Watt and just the personality he brings, talk about what it’s like to play with him on a daily basis and just his amazing personality. BC: He’s one of a bunch, you know we’ve got a bunch of guys that are like that. Every one of us likes to play football; it’s the people that we start to draft out here and bring off a good market. I think coach O’Brien, Rick Smith, Mr. McNair have all done a great job of bringing in guys that love football, wanna compete every single day, and it’s the most important thing to them, it’s winning, playing football and playing at a very high level. JC: And Brian also, your defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, what did he bring to the table last year that helped that defense take the next step? BC: A lot of variety. Obviously years and years of experience with success. He’s a great coach. He can just help us relate onto the field from the playbook very well and very quickly. He had to transition fast learning a new playbook and I think he did a great job teaching it and really showing us how to do it. And like I said he’s got a variety of a ton of different schemes intown 21

RENOVATING Instead of REBUILDING Two local firms doing it right By Marene Gustin
Houston has a reputation for bulldozing buildings and rebuilding from scratch, but local firms are redesigning two local iconic buildings. STUDIO RED ARCHITECTS Founding partner at Studio Red Architects, Pete Ed Garrett, AIA, is an expert in performing arts design, with more than three decades of experience and a long list of awards for this work on 40 plus theaters. So it’s no wonder that when the venerable Alley Theatre wanted a $46.5-million makeover, it was Houston’s own Garrett and Studio Red the board turned to.
The downtown building, opened in 1968, is an iconic piece of Brutalist design, from the French béton brut, meaning raw concrete.
“The concrete construction has been a challenge,” admits Garrett. “We had to cut a hole in the roof to create a four-story fly loft (for storing and scenery and equipment). And it was challenging to bring the building up to current codes while making it more sustainable.” Work began last July and will include a fully trapped area below the stage floor so people and scenery can rise from below the stage, an expanded backstage area, and most importantly a more intimate relationship between the audience’s seating area and the stage; audience amenities, such as new seats, expanded restrooms, a new lobby space with a skyline view; and building upgrades, such as new multi-zoned air conditioning system, and new electrical and plumbing systems making the building more energy efficient.

River Oaks Apartments, once a luxury complex built in the early 1960’s that had fallen into disrepair in recent years. Last year the New York City-based Arel Capital bought the building and in December began renovating the apartments into 78 luxury condos that will sell for between $875,000 to $10 million (for the two penthouses). The sales office opened in late June of this year but even before that the company had had as many as 200 inquiries about units. The mid-century, Miesian-style building sits on almost three-acres of prime River Oaks real estate, close by fabled shopping districts and world-class restaurants. Construction should be complete in 2017.

Houston’s EDI International is the architect for the project and the locally based but worldwide firm of Rottet Studio is doing the interior design.
“By preserving the unique “bones” of the building, we not only preserve a modernist landmark building, but also benefit from retaining the structural concrete framework,” says Lauren Rottet, FAIA, FIIDA, and founding principal / president of Rottet Studio. “Poured in the 1960s, that material far exceeds the density and quality in contemporary construction and is so well cured that the structure remains stable,” she continues. “The vision is then to make the interior space animated. The daily and seasonal progression of natural light amplifies transitions within the residences and creates a more expansive sense of space within.” She adds that the upper-level residences will capitalize on the horizontal plane and provide optimum and unobstructed views of the city. But River Oaks is also all about a lushly manicured landscape. So at lower levels, the views bring the outdoors inside in a celebration of greenery. The restoration brings state-of-the-art materials and finishes, but the goal is not to create a museum. The vision of a contemporary and warm space with dark emollients, hardwoods, and warm limestone. There will even be a set of collected, eclectic furnishings that lend the sense of an established residence to the common areas. Simply put, buildings with these proportions and materials are not going to be built in the future. By preserving The River Oaks, the residences become the type of rarified property that builds a unique bond with residents, much like a collector has with a prized piece of art.

Gin Braverman
"Design is in my DNA, one of my grandmothers was a designer, the other an artist, and my mother has a great eye for design and space planning,” says Gin Braverman, the stylish Houston and New York designer of commercial and residential properties. “As a 7-year-old, I would regularly move furniture around in my bedroom looking for a perfect layout.” After working her way through the production scene, she gravitated into set design during her time in New York City and then moved to Taipei, where she worked with other interior designers.
Braverman then returned to Houston where she spent time as an apprentice in the workshop at Installations Antiques and then running the HGTV Show "Home Rules." “This experience really provided me with the in-depth hands-on training and quick decision-making skills that have aided me in the fast-paced, hands-on commercial design field.” “My most challenging, and always most interesting projects tend to be the ones with short deadlines, i.e. Camerata and The Commoner. Mauricio Nava Born in Mexico City, Mauricio Nava has been living in Houston for the past 34 years. Now 40, and recently a proud father, he launched his business six years ago. Nava has been designing his whole life, but It wasn't until he was living with one of his best friends Charlie, who happened to open up his first Charming Charlie store that it got me seriously wanting to do this for a living. “Charlie asked me to design his office, his corporate offices and next thing I knew I was doing his new condo, a 7,000 square foot house in Memorial and six units at 2727 Kirby,” says Nava.

For the most part, his clients have hired him to design a space for them that is modern, contemporary or transitional. “Making my clients fall in love with their new space or falling in love with an old space again is something that inspires and motivates me,” states Nava. His favorite project to date was a high rise unit that he did two years ago. According to him there was “100% freedom on all selections made and an open budget to execute the project.” By allowing him this freedom, he was able to alter walls, add lighting effects throughout the entire unit and make it smart home ready and controlled with the touch of an iPad located in each room. The client was so pleased with the results that he has since purchased a new penthouse unit with 11,000 square feet awaiting his design.
